Up to 10 million litres of chemicals have been left exposed at the site of the toxic Tottenham fire for more than a year, sparking a furious response from nearby residents. Taxpayers may also be forced to pick up the bill to clean up the 14,000 square metre site of the August 2018 fire, which was fuelled by an illegally dumped chemical cocktail of toxic waste and scrap metal. Environment Protection Authority Victoria confirmed on Monday that up to 10 million litres of residual chemicals including dangerous goods – enough to fill four Olympic-sized swimming pools – have remained on the site for almost 14 months. A joint EPA and WorkSafe statement said security guards have been posted to the site around-the-clock as authorities attempt to force the site owner and occupier to clean up residual chemicals including aerosols, solvents and paint residues. Chris Kennett, who lives near the site, said residents are fearful of potential health impacts and frustrated that authorities have failed to lay any charges or issue fines over the fire, which spewed black smoke over the western suburbs and burnt for almost a week. “More than a year later the creek is still dead, we keep our children indoors – a great crime has been done upon our community and no one has been punished,” he said. “There are so many furious and scared people around here that have been ignored by the authorities and it’s going to come to a head.” Sue Vittori, chair of the Anti-Toxic Waste Alliance, said the delays in informing the community and securing the site have been unacceptable. “As a community we are feeling that there is no sense of urgency, there needs to be a far more serious response,” she said. Star Weekly reported in August that site owner Christopher James Baldwin, via his company Danbol Pty Ltd, has been ordered to remove all high risk chemical waste from the site within 12 months. EPA and WorkCover repeated on Monday that waste and chemicals must be removed from the site by August 2020. They said the government may be forced to step in if the site owner fails to clean up the site. Footscray MP Katie Hall has called for a community meeting to be held this week so residents can ask the relevant authorities about the fire site.

Altona Meadows woman Lakshana Soopaul has made it through to the 2020 Miss World Australia state final. She was among 30 contestants in the preliminary final held at The Trust Melbourne on Saturday and one of 17 through to the next stage. Lakshana, 22, is studying a Bachelor of Science, after which she plans to become a doctor of physiotherapy. She and her family migrated from Mauritius about six years ago. “Because of my background, I’ve had the privilege to learn five languages from a very young age,” she said. “I’m fluent in English, French, Mauritian creole, Hindi and Bhojpuri.” Lakshana said she spent almost her entire life “on the unhealthy side of the scale” until three years ago when she started her fitness journey and lost about 38 kilograms. “I am someone who has struggled my whole life, so that was when I really started believing in myself,” she said. “I was not healthy, as well. “When I lost weight, it kind of made me fit in my body and in my mind, also.” Lakshana also competed in the 2019 title, raising the most money (more than $8500) of any Victorian contestant for Variety – the Children’s Charity. Ahead of the state final, to be held mid next year, Lakshana is again fundraising for Variety as part of the pageant.

Foodie feast in time for summer By Goya Dmytryshchak The ‘Grazeland’ food precinct catering for 30,000 people at Spotswood has gained approval from Hobsons Bay council and is slated to open for summer. The council is tomorrow expected to issue a planning permit for what has been dubbed “Melbourne’s most exciting new culinary destination”. Museums Victoria, which also manages the Royal Exhibition Building, called for expressions of interest from vendors to operate at the vacant Crown land that was recently used

to film Australian Ninja Warrior. The EoI document stated the precinct would be “reminiscent of a permanent street party or laneway festival”. Push Projects’ application states the “festive, family-focused food and entertainment precinct” will operate each weekend for about three years. “Vendors at Grazeland will be carefully curated to provide diversity for our customers,” it states. “By selecting only specialists in each particular style or type of food, we ensure our customers are not presented with mediocrity.”

It is expected to have 71 traders including 41 selling savoury food and dessert and 28 offering sweets, fresh foods, potato sticks, fruit drinks, face-painting, temporary tattoos, fairy floss, promotional products and branded merchandise. There will also be three bars, live on-stage entertainment, roving artists and performers, and multiple private function spaces. The 8700 square metre site will have two gates and an entrance fee of $2.50 or free for accompanied children under 12. Grazeland would be open every weekend of the year, trading Friday from 5-10pm, Saturday

from noon-10pm and Sunday from noon-9pm. Projected figures predict the precinct will attract 8000 visitors on Fridays, 12,600 on Saturdays and 9400 on Sundays. As part of the council’s approval, if overflow car parking causes a nuisance, additional car parking is to be provided onsite or in other approved locations. The council received three objections and one letter of support of the Grazeland application. Grounds for objections included concerns about increased traffic, pedestrian safety, onsite parking provision, noise, scale and an adverse economic impact on existing local traders.

Thieves target tradies toolbox, motorbikes Tradies are being warned to lock up their power tools overnight after a spate of thefts from work vehicles across the inner-west. Sergeant Richard Imrie of Maribyrnong Police said police have recorded eight incidents of work utilities and vans being broken into between October 8 and 14, with “a significant amount” of power tools stolen. “Five of the thefts have occurred in Yarraville, two have occurred in Seddon and one in West Footscray,” he said. “On every occasion the vehicle was parked on the road or nature strip.” Tradies are advised to either remove their power tools from vehicles overnight or park their vehicle in a secure location. Six of the vehicles targeted were utilities, the thieves breaking the locks of external toolboxes or breaking in through the canopy to gain access. The other two offences involved an offender smashing windows to gain entry to vans and search through the cargo area. Police have also warned of a growing trend in motorcycle theft. Senior Constable Thomas Briggs said bikes have been stolen from Kingsville Street in Kingsville, Wests Road in Maribyrnong and Middleton Street in Braybrook. “Thieves have turned their attention to stealing motorcycles, a live issue for us and the community,” he said. Former councillor pleads guilty By Chris Vedelago, The Age A former Wyndham councillor and decorated police officer has pleaded guilty to serious sexual offences against two female victims. Mark Steven Rose began to weep loudly after he admitted three charges in the County Court last Tuesday. The court heard the former police sergeant sexually penetrated two victims in incidents in July and August 2018. The identity of the victims and details of the crimes cannot be disclosed for legal reasons.

Mr Rose buried his face in tissues and continued to weep after Judge Paul Higham allowed him to step down from the dock. Mr Rose resigned from Victoria Police early this month – less than a fortnight before entering his guilty plea – after 26 years in the force. He is a recipient of the National Medal for Police Service, was an executive member of the Police Association and served in the Australian Air Force. In 2010, Mr Rose resigned after seven years on Wyndham council, and cited escalating

work and family responsibilities as the reason for his decision. Mr Rose ran for the seat of Altona in the 2010 byelection called in the wake of the resignation of Lynne Kosky but lost to Labor’s Jill Hennessy. He was joined on the campaign trail that year by then-opposition leader Ted Baillieu. Mr Rose also staged a failed bid for State Parliament in 2006 in another seat. Mr Rose has been allowed to remain on bail ahead of a plea hearing in April next year. He is living in Queensland.

Student of the law A Braybrook student is well on his way to achieving his career goals and changing perceptions. Year 12 student Vike Martin Ashien has recently completed a School-Based Apprenticeship Training (SBAT) program with Sunshine Police. Vike spent each Monday with Sunshine Police for 12 months, learning what’s required to be an officer. He said the experience made him even more determined to become a police officer. “What appeals to me most is the idea of bringing communities together to achieve social cohesion,” he said. “It was a great experience, meeting lots of police and seeing how they do their job. “I thought police were serious all the time, but knowing them better and seeing them joke around showed me they’re just like everyone else.”

He said he hopes his Sudanese background will help break down barriers. “Being an African student, the reputation we’ve gained isn’t a great one, so I want to be able to restore that and help people realise we’re good people as well. “It’s an unfair reputation, it’s pretty much judging a book by its cover.” Vike is currently completing his year 12 studies and next year hopes to go to Victoria University before applying to join the force. “I want to go to university first and study criminal justice and after that I’d like to do a little travel,” he said. “It’s about getting a bit of life experience up before I apply.” Tate Papworth Vike Martin Ashien has completed a School-Based Apprenticeship Training program with Sunshine Police. Napier bridge safety call By Benjamin Millar Authorities are being pressured to do more to stop trucks crashing into the notorious Napier Street bridge after two more crashes in recent days took the year’s tally to almost 20. An inbound truck crashed into a barrier at the Footscray bridge about 10am on Friday while an outbound truck slammed into a bridge barrier about 7.30am on Monday. The state government has spent millions of dollars on safety improvements including flashing lights and warning signs to alert oversized trucks of the risk, but the efforts have failed to dint the number of trucks still crashing, often creating lengthy traffic and rail delays. Maribyrnong Truck Action Group president Martin Wurt said Monday’s crash was the 19th time that the bridge has been hit this year. “When will trucks be banned from this most inappropriate freight route? “What will it take for a ban – a major injury or a death before the government gets serious about a solution?” Mr Wurt said authorities should consider an overhead chain warning system that makes a loud noise to alert the driver of an impending crash, such as that installed at Montague Street bridge. “Our warning lights are obviously ineffective as Napier Street is up to 19 crashes this year versus Montague’s four,” he said. The crashes came as VicRoads repainted warning signs to avoid confusion because some stated the bridge clearance is 4.0 metres and others stated it is 4.1 metres. Authorities are continuing to resist pressure to lower the road, raise the bridge or send trucks onto another route. Mr Wurt said as well as the major safety hazard to road users,

authorities need to consider the financial impact of the crashes from lost productivity due to train delays and traffic detours. A Department of Transport spokesman said automatic electronic over height vehicle detection systems and 28 advance warning signs are in place on both approaches to, and

around, the bridge. “While this technology has reduced the number of bridge strikes at Napier Street, ultimately, the only way to eliminate bridge strikes is for drivers to be aware of the height of their vehicle and plan their journey accordingly,” he said.

Girlfriends set to raise funds A fundraiser in memory of a close friend lost to cancer will be held in Yarraville this Saturday as part of the Cancer Council’s ‘Girls’ Night In’. Western Girlfriends is holding its third fundraising event since forming in 2016 after the loss of Kerrie McDonald, a close friend of the organisers. Rhonda Peterson said Ms McDonald was diagnosed with an aggressive cancer in mid-2016 and given three months to live. “Kerrie was 54, a friend to many and one of her greatest loves was the Western Bulldogs,” she said. As her cancer advanced she watched the Bulldogs beat the West Coast Eagles in the first final of their march to their historic flag, but died on September 9, just weeks before their grand final win against the Sydney Swans. “The week after the grand final, a few of us decided that Kerrie’s life should also be celebrated and we formed a small group to organise a fundraiser in her honour to help raise funds,” Ms Peterson said. “Ninety-five girls turned up and we raised around $5000. The event was so popular and successful for many reasons, so we have continued holding an event annually to reconnect and celebrate friendships.” This year’s event is being held from 1-5pm this Saturday at the Victoria Hotel, 188 Hyde Street Yarraville. VU in volunteer mode Hundreds of Victoria University staff and student volunteers have swarmed the western suburbs to do their bit for the community during VU’s annual volunteering blitz. Now in its ninth year, V4U Day involved volunteers from across VU’s campuses helping out on more than 20 projects spread across Melbourne’s western suburbs. Volunteers rolled up their sleeves recently to help out at local organisations and schools including Women’s Circus, Yarraville Community Centre and the Footscray Community Bike Shed, as well as the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre, Angliss Neighbourhood House and Yarraville Special Developmental School. VU vice-chancellor Professor Peter Dawkins said V4U Day is VU’s

largest community volunteering day, involving hundreds of staff and students taking time out to connect with the community. He said the initiative helps build invaluable connections and a sense of social responsibility. “The event celebrates VU’s strong partnerships in the west of Melbourne, including with not-for-profit organisations, schools, community groups and local councils,” he said. “Collaboration with partner organisations enables this event to reach over 4000 individuals in our local communities.” More than 200 staff and students took part in last year’s event, contributing almost 1700 hours of help at almost 20 partner organisations. Police are hunting a man who groped a woman and offered to kiss her when she walked past him on the Laverton pedestrian footbridge across the freeway about 7pm on June 12. The woman screamed, which alerted other pedestrians and scared the offender away. Union fined over Altona North blockade

By Goya Dmytryshchak A Melbourne Cup eve run for humans will retrace the tracks of Phar Lap around the former Williamstown Racecourse. The Hobsons Bay Running Club, known as The Hobos, will host the fourth Phar Lap run. Committee member Aaron McAleese said the community was welcome to join the free event. “Runners will take on the 3.218 kilometre circuit, the original Melbourne Cup distance, at what is now Altona Coastal Park,” he said. “The remnants of the stands still remain and the existing path which follows the old track is still a beautiful place for running.” Williamstown Racecourse operated from 1864 to 1940 before the federal government took over the land for army training in World War II. Phar Lap won the Underwood Stakes there in 1931. Williamstown Racing Club had planned to resume racing at the course in 1948, but in 1947 a suspicious fire destroyed much of the public and members stands and racing was never held there again, according to Williamstown historian Tom Ferris. This year, men will compete for the Egret Cup and women for the Kestrel Cup, in honour of two bird species who call the park home. The fastest race times were last year set by Lachlan Welsh (10:49) and Tameka Day (12:26). Phar Lap’s winning Melbourne Cup time in 1930 was 3:27.7. The race, on Monday, November 4, will start at 6.45pm with registration from 6.15pm at the carpark at Altona Road, north of the Pines Scout Camp (Melway ref 55-B9). is open to all ages (children must be accompanied). The CFMMEU was this month fined $80,000 and one of its officials individually fined $12,000 for two blockades at an Aldi construction site in Altona North in 2014. The Federal Court of Australia fined the union and official Drew MacDonald for contravening the Fair Work Act on December 5 and 8, 2014. Mr MacDonald had twice parked a vehicle across the only entrance to 302-330 Millers Road and prevented any vehicles from entering the Altona North site with intent to coerce Magellan Projects to comply with a lawful request to make an enterprise agreement, the court heard. Magellan was contracted to perform building work at the site and was not covered by any enterprise agreement. On December 5, 2014, several workers from Melbourne Precast Concrete Nominees, contracted by Magellan to install concrete panels, were blocked from entering the site. Mr MacDonald parked a vehicle across the site entrance and told the site manager words to the effect of, “No panels going up today”. On December 8, 2014, Mr MacDonald parked a vehicle across the site entrance and various vehicles of subcontractors were prevented from entering the site. All of the allegations were admitted by Mr MacDondald and the union.

Airport results donâ€™t fly: Resident By Tate Papworth Keilor residents have slammed the findings from Melbourne Airportâ€™s community workshops. The airport held a series of workshops into the possibility of switching the alignment of its long-touted third runway to north-south facing. A total of 226 people participated in the airportâ€™s community engagement sessions, flagging a number of key concerns. Keilor Residents and Ratepayers

spokesperson Susan Jennison said there was nothing new in the findings. â€œThe key finding was noise and vibration concerns. I think anyone couldâ€™ve told you that was the main concern,â€? Ms Jennison said. â€œTheyâ€™ve raised six major points â€“ those are big issues for people, but theyâ€™re all totally predictable. â€œWhat they havenâ€™t said is what theyâ€™re going to do with this information. Is this what the board will make a decision on or has it just been a step to tick a box to say theyâ€™ve gone out to the local community?â€?

The most frequently raised topics during the two-month review were the opportunity for improved infrastructure and services, noise and flight path mitigation, and economic and job opportunities. Environmental issues and compensation were also raised. â€œItâ€™s all well and good to list these things, but where are the answers?â€? Ms Jennison said. â€œWe were told the main reason for the possible switch of alignment was windsheer, but thereâ€™s no mention of windsheer from what I could see in any of this. â€œThereâ€™s also a lot of people who want answers

around various health and social impacts that would come with another runway, but thereâ€™s no answers.â€? Doctor suspended for six months By Goya Dmytryshchak A South Kingsville doctor has been suspended from practising for six months for excessive drug prescribing to patients as young as 13. Dr Christopher Watts, 61, prescribed mainly opioids and benzodiazepines to eight patients of the Westgate Health Co-op (formerly South Kingsville Health Service) over an extended period. The Medical Board of Australia this month stated that in nearly all cases the patients were already or had become drug dependent as a

result of Dr Watt’s prescribing. One patient was 13 when Dr Watts first prescribed diazepam and Tramal (a benzodiazepine and strong pain killer, respectively.) Dr Watts was chairman of Westgate Health Co-Op between 1991 and 1993 and had also worked at Braybrook Maidstone Community

Health Centre, Victoria University Student Health, The Gathering Place in Maribyrnong and Headspace in Sunshine. In August, 2013, Dr Watts appeared in the Magistrates Court of Victoria charged with nine offences relating to his prescribing and was released on a 12 month good behaviour bond without conviction. The medical board did not take immediate action and he continued to work until notified of the board’s proceedings in September, 2018. The board heard that Dr Watts now recognised his prescribing behaviours placed

his patients at risk in terms of addiction, adverse drug effects and the potential for a fatal overdose. He told the board: “I struggle when patient stress is not relieved, particularly if other family members are caught up. I tend to focus on easing distress to the exclusion of other things.” Dr Watts will be required to complete education on prescribing medication before returning to supervised practise, during which time he will not be permitted to prescribe controlled drugs or benzodiazepines.

Reward for inspiration Four teachers from Hobsons Bay and Wyndham were last week recognised in Altona City Rotary Club’s annual Teacher Awards. Cassie Comyns of Williamstown High School was honoured for inspiring others with her positivity and passion. Jessica Alger of Emmanuel College at Altona North, in her first year of teaching, was recognised for her enthusiasm and commitment, often dedicating her lunchtimes to doing additional work with students who were struggling. Celeste Casale, from the college’s Notre Dame campus at Point Cook, was another first-year teacher credited for her creativity, passion and enthusiasm. Also recognised was Olive Chodowski, a teacher with more than four decades’ experience including 29 years at St Mary’s Primary School in Altona. She was honoured for sharing her expertise in many leadership

roles and her ability to engage with every child. Rotary vocational director Bryan Goodwin said next year a Team Award category would be introduced. “We were delighted with the quality of the nominations received, which ranged from two teachers completing their first year of teaching to one with over 40 years’ teaching experience,” he said. “We are hoping more Hobsons Bay schools may nominate teachers next year.” Hobsons Bay mayor Jonathon Marsden, who presented the awards, praised Rotary for supporting the local community. “We congratulate the wonderful teachers who are shaping the minds of our future,” he said. Nurses fight for pay rise

The Pilgrim Street campus, due to open on the corner of Pilgrim and Albert Streets in 2022, will be a junior secondary college catering for 550 students as part of the three-campus Footscray High School. The $80 million Footscray Learning

Precinct project also includes a conversion of Gilmore College for Girls into the revamped 700-student co-educational Barkly Street junior campus and the transformation of the existing Footscray City College into an exclusively senior secondary campus. Footscray Primary School, Footscray City Primary School and a new adjoining early learning centre will also form part of the connected precinct. Hutchinson Builders has been appointed to

build the new campus, which will comprise multi-level flexible and specialised learning spaces including science, arts and food technology facilities. Williamstown MP Melissa Horne – who pushed for the project as president of the SKY High lobby group before entering Parliament – recently turned the first symbolic sod on the rebuild. “We’re ensuring every child can have a great education at their local public school,” she said.

Maribyrnong maternal and child health and immunisation nurses have stepped up their campaign for better pay, walking off the job in the first of a number of potential actions. Australian Nursing & Midwifery Federation (ANMF) members held a stop-work barbecue outside the council’s headquarters recently to highlight their claim for a wages boost to bring them in line with counterparts in neighbouring municipalities. ANMF Victorian branch secretary Lisa Fitzpatrick said the council’s pay rates for maternal and child health nurses are between 9.4 per cent and 11 per cent behind those of neighbouring councils. “Maribyrnong’s nurses are not worth less than nurses working in other local government regions.” Council’s wage rise offered in current enterprise agreement negotiations is 2 to 2.25 per cent per year over three years, while the nurses are seeking a rise of either 2.5 per cent or $30 per week this year, then the higher of the Victorian Government’s designated rate cap or 2.25 per cent or $30 per week over the next two years. The council is also facing a wages fight with Australian Services Union staff members, who have voted in favour of a ballot enabling protected industrial action. Maribyrnong council corporate services director Celia Haddock said the council is seeking the best outcome for the community and staff.

Man jailed for stabbing death By Benjamin Millar A man with a lengthy history of violent and criminal behavior has been jailed for more than 10 years over the stabbing death of a man in West Footscray in 2017. Cody Frost, 37, claimed he was defending himself when he stabbed Marcus Rowley, 24, outside Tottenham railway station on August 5, 2017. A Supreme Court jury found Frost not guilty of murder over the stabbing, but found he

was guilty of manslaughter. The New Zealand national is likely to be deported upon his release. The court heard Frost boarded a city-bound train at St Albans with a female friend, travelling in the same carriage as Mr Rowley. Witnesses said Mr Rowley was swearing, harassing others and clearly drunk, swigging from a bottle of Jim Beam. The three passengers alighted at Tottenham station, where Mr Rowley asked the pair to give him a cigarette.

Frost gave Rowley his last cigarette and walked with his friend down to the Ashley Street underpass. Mr Rowley followed the pair despite Frost repeatedly asking him to “leave us alone” and “get away”. The court heard that Frost then turned and confronted Mr Rowley, pulling a large knife. Justice James Elliot told the Supreme Court Frost’s response was “violent and disproportionate” as he stabbed Mr Rowley below the armpit, piercing his right lung. Frost left the scene, leaving Mr Rowley to

bleed to death on the roadway. When his friend saw news of the death in the media the next day, she confronted Frost, who turned himself in to Footscray police station. Justice Elliot sentenced Frost to 10 years and six months in prison, noting his criminal history included intentionally causing serious injury, possessing a handgun and various drugs offences. He will be eligible for parole in seven years and nine months and could be released in 2024, having already served 795 days.

Girls are queens of the board It was time to make a move as Altona’s Mount St Joseph Girls’ College last Thursday hosted the Kids Unlimited girls only state chess finals. The school’s Nicole Magee praised the competitors, with the school coming third out 12 secondary schools. “In a sport dominated by boys, girls are playing chess in greater numbers,” she said. “Chess builds mental muscles and is a great opportunity for students to represent their college, apart from traditional sports. “Mount St Joseph Girls’ College did extremely well to come third in their division and receive an invitation to attend the National Championship to be held at Melbourne University next month.” Pakenham and Noble Park secondary colleges took out first and second place, respectively.

Man jailed for sex abuse By Goya Dmytryshchak An Altona Meadows man was caught breaching an intervention order more than 20 times in 20 days while on bail for sexually penetrating a child under 16. Michael Livori, 52, has been sentenced to three and a half years jail after pleading guilty in the County Court to one charge of sexual penetration of a child under 16 and 23 charges of breaching an interim personal safety

intervention order. His 15-year-old victim had been kept in Livori’s room at a Werribee boarding house, where she said was forced to give Livori oral sex. She had been listed as a missing person since December 1, 2017, and was living in Livori’s rented room until she was picked up by police on January 2, 2018. The court heard the complainant described the abuse as happening “all day, every day for a month.”

In July, 2018, Livori was granted bail at Altona North police station in relation to charges involving sexually penetrating a child under 16. At this time, he was living in Lynden Street, Altona Meadows. The same month, the Department of Health and Human Services and Child Protection became aware he was associating with the girl by phone and had been doing so for a month. The department applied for an intervention order on the girl’s behalf, prohibiting Livori

from contacting her by any means. Between July 28, 2018, and August 16, 2018, Livori breached a personal safety intervention order 17 times, including sending the girl 143 text messages in 20 days. He must serve two and a half years before being eligible for parole. Breaches of intervention orders were one of the fastest growing crimes in Hobsons Bay in the year to June, with the number of offences rising from 504 to 795.

Fast track to stardom Musicians, dancers and other performers are being invited to try out for Australia’s largest non-televised talent show, with heats being held at Williamstown Town Hall on Sunday. It is the first time Hobson Bay will host Fast Track, which has helped launch the careers of several contestants and winners of The Voice, The X Factor and Eurovision. Councillor Tony Briffa said the show could help performers aged 12-25 to gain exposure and constructive feedback from industry professionals. “Fast Track is a national competition which has uncovered a range of talented artists including X-Factor Isaiah Firebrace, X-Factor grand finalist Amalia Foy and Eurovision representatives Isabella Clarke and Bella Paige,” Cr Briffa said. “This is the first time we have hosted this competition in Hobsons Bay and I’m really excited about the prospect of shining the spotlight on some of our talented homegrown artists.”

Cr Colleen Gates said Sunday’s heat would be in front of a panel of judges, with the top 40 contestants invited to perform in the grand final on November 17. “Contestants have the chance to win a number of exciting prizes including a Yamaha musical instrument, trophies and a recording studio opportunity as well as potential management consultation with YOYO Music management,” she said. I’ve lived in Hobsons Bay since a very young age, attending Williamstown North Primary School and continue to live and work in Hobsons Bay.

I have always been passionate about youth mental health and continue to be, supporting others on their journey, sharing resources and my story with them.

My boyfriend and I love walking down of a weekend morning and enjoying the atmosphere of Ferguson Street, some delicious food and a yummy hot chocolate. The staff are always super friendly and accommodating, it might always be packed to the rafters, but they’ll always find you a spot.

I have done a number of things, I won the Community Service and Social Impact Award at the Victorian Young Achiever Awards. I ran a mental health workshop for young women, which you can find on my Instagram @sparecapacity. I helped raise money for the Hobsons Bay Community Fund by sharing my story with mental ill health. I was accepted to participate in the Victorian Mental Illness Awareness Council Emerging Leaders Program. I was interviewed by a UK podcast series, participated in a short film for Mental Health First Aid Australia, and released the first episode of my documentary series, The First Giant Hurdle. I got my mental health first aid certificate and lastly was invited to meet the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. eter Scroggie, owner of Beds For Backs Yarraville, is a huge believer in providing just that type of customer service, knowing it’s every bit as important as the remarkable ergonomic beds he sells. But before he explains the life-changing benefits, the comfort and the proven science of ErgoLife beds, Peter shares one of many stories that verify his old-school customer service cred. “I had a couple come in recently who bought a king-size ErgoLife bed. non-sales environment. Now, about those ErgoLife beds. The ergonomics used in the beds have been rigorously tested and proven by scientists, and the government deems them as GST-free health aids. ErgoLife beds are often the go-to for TAC and WorkCover patients. Peter works closely with the medical profession in this regard and he’s able to help customers with their claims. Both sides of the bed are adjusted by Peter to exactly suit a person’s body shape. A woman’s curvy body shape is far different to a man’s, for example – and that difference can require an adjustment of up to 30 centimetres to make each side right for both people. Footscray has completed its one-day block of games to start the Victorian Premier Cricket in a strong position on the ladder. The Bulldogs extracted 11 points out of their four tough one-day matches to hold down sixth spot. The Allan Wise-coached Bulldogs undoubtedly rode their luck in the first part of a double header last weekend. Footscray claimed an unlikely draw from a rain-interrupted match against Prahran at Merv Hughes Oval. Chasing 251 for victory, the Bulldogs survived to finish on 6-68, enough to snatch a draw. When a third rain delay reduced the chase to less than 25 overs, it gave the Bulldogs the option to bat the game out for a draw, which they gleefully took. Earlier in the innings, the Bulldogs did try to go for the target, but with every rain delay came even tougher revised totals under the Duckworth-Lewis system. Eventually, it was decided by the Bulldogs to bat out the match for a draw. “The Duckworth-Lewis system definitely worked against us being the team batting second,” Bulldogs captain Dylan Kight said. “Being given unrealistic targets, we were best suited to try and just bat out the last few overs to get two points. “Realistically, the weather cost them [Prahran] the win because they were all over us, but they took it well.” On Sunday, Footscray left nothing to chance. The Bulldogs compiled a confident 8-270 off their 50 overs to be in the box seat at the halfway mark against Frankston Peninsula. Dan Sartori, one of the Bulldogs big name recruits in the off season, produced his best game in the red, white and blue so far. The opener smashed 72 off 90 balls, including nine fours and a six, to lay the platform for a big Bulldogs score. Sartori had endured a sluggish start to the year with scores of 16, seven and nine, but this could be a turning point for him just in time for a block of two-day games in the run-in to Christmas. “Dan’s been champing at the bit to get amonst

the runs,” Kight said. “He’s made something like 6000 Premier runs, so we knew it was going to happen, it was just a matter of when. “Today he chanced his arm a bit and it came off for him. “He just took the game on and was the reason why we were in a good position at the drinks break, that’s for sure.” With veteran Dean Russ removed for a rare duck, Footscray was desperate for others in the top order to shine. Travis Dean (28), Matt Underwood (42) and Kight (27) chipped in with valuable runs. The player with the most impact was James Muirhead, who produced an exhilarating 63 off 50 balls, including three fours and three sixes. “He worked really hard on his batting the last few years in the Cricket Victoria system,” Kight said. “He was hitting them cleaner than anyone. “He hit it straight over the bowlers head a few times. “He just backed himself.” Footscray was confident that 270 would be a match-winning score, but also wary of the threat Frankston Peninsula possesses. The home side chased down scores of 238 and 272 in their two previous wins, so it was not a fait accompli for the Bulldogs. “We knew it was game on, but we came out and bowled well,” Kight said. “We didn’t get the early breakthrough, but we just restricted them. “They put on a few good partnerships, but we never let the run rate get too high.” Peninsula finished with 218. Left arm medium pacer Tallan Wright was superb for Footscray with 4-42 off 10 overs, including the wicket of Frankston Peninsula top scorer Felix Organ. Left arm spinner Siddhesh Dixit had an impact with 3-49 off 10. Dixit took a wicket with his first ball on consecutive days. Footscray will face one of the toughest challenges in Victorian cricket when it visits the Junction Oval to take on St Kilda in a two-day game starting on Saturday. “It’s as big as it gets in Victorian cricket,” Kight said. “I think I’ve been a part of one win at Junction Oval in seven or eight attempts and it wasn’t against St Kilda.”

Western United’s missed opportunities It was a tale of two halves for Western United in a pulsating 1-1 draw with Perth Glory in its home A-League opener at GMHBA Stadium on Saturday. In stark contrast to a week earlier, United came out lifeless, lacking imagination and lucky to be on level terms at half-time, but Mark Rudan’s team re-grouped after the break and showed the serious attacking threat it possesses in an impressive second 45 minutes. Panagiotis Kone, the first of United’s marquee signings, brought the game to life with an unforgettable first United goal on Australian soil in the 49th minute. The crowd rose to its feet in unison when Kone’s long range curling strike evaded the arms of Perth Glory goalkeeper Liam Reddy and slammed into the back of the net. It is a goal that will be replayed over and over again and one for the 6888 spectators in attendance to say ‘I was there for that’. United right winger Josh Risdon was pleased with the response of his team after a lacklustre first half. “The first half obviously wasn’t the best,” he said. “It was pretty sloppy on our behalf and we couldn’t really keep the ball too well and we sort of got trapped in our own half. “I thought in the second half we responded very well.

Despite his inability to keep a clean sheet, Kurto was one of United’s best players, making a number of spectacular saves. “He was the goalkeeper of the year [for Wellington Phoenix] last year and he’s been outstanding for us,” Risdon said. “It’s really good as a defender to know you’ve got someone in goals who can get you out of sticky situations.” Kone had some of the more noteworthy chances for Western United in the second half through his willingness to present for teammates and get into dangerous positions. He was one of a few United players frustrated not to find a winner. Connor Pain was superb on the left wing, while Diamanti’s class shone through. “Diamanti is obviously a world class player,” Risdon said. “He’s got 360 vision.” Risdon is pleased with the look and feel of Western United early in the season. The cohesion for a newly constructed team is a credit to the work of Rudan, his coaching staff and the players willingness to buy in. The firsts keep coming for Western United in its inaugural season. United will play its first local derby against Melbourne City at GMHBA Stadium on Sunday at 6pm.

Altona off to a flyer with big win over Deer Park

The first priority for Altona was to get a fast start to the Bowls Victoria premier division season. The A’s could not afford a repeat of their hellish start to last season if they were to get back into the premiership mix. “It’s been a bit different to last year, it’s a good start, we’re three and zip, you can’t get much better than that,” A’s skip Brett Foley said. “Last year we started 0-6 and all the losses just added up on each other and then it starts getting in your head. “As soon as we won our first one this season, then beat Essendon in round two, we hadn’t beaten them for a few years, it got the ball rolling.” Altona seems back to its best. The A’s have opened up with three consecutive wins, including two against sides that will be jostling it out for finals positions. The 89-58 road victory over Deer Park was one to savour for Altona on Saturday. The A’s see the Parkers as a genuine threat at the top end of the ladder, but made a statement of their own with a huge win.

“To win all rinks up was a big effort,” Foley said. “We made it a bit of a must-win sort of a game. “We think they’re going to be one of the better teams this year, so it was a big game for us. “It was a marking point to see where we’re at. “We got in front nice and early and that’s what we’ve done the last two games and gone on from there.” After a rare down year for Altona in 2019, some clubs might have crumbled and seen a mass player exodus. But the A’s are a tight-knit unit on and off the greens. “Everyone down at Altona are really good mates,” Foley said. “At least 10 of us have been together for a good six to eight years. “It’s just adding a couple of players here and there every couple of years. “We always stick together and that’s the good thing about Altona. “It’s probably why they’ve had so much success.” Altona not only managed to retain the bulk of its players, but remained a destination club.

Jets land in top squad

Ocean Grove’s Leigh McIlvenny and Yarraville Footscray’s Ray Coulter joined the A’s in the off season. McIlvenny is so highly rated at the A’s that he was immediately installed as a skip. “It’s always good to add a couple of new faces to freshen things up,” Foley said. The biggest improvement for Altona has come internally. The individuals that had seasons to forget last year have returned to their best this summer. “Last year we couldn’t play any worse,” Foley said. “Anyone who wasn’t playing good is playing good now. “I can’t really put my finger on why. “Maybe we just had a year off.” Altona will square off with Yarraville Footscray in the local derby at Altona Bowls Club on Saturday. While the A’s are flying on a 3-0 start, it is the opposite for the Bulldogs, who are struggling in the relegation zone at 0-3. Foley knows those records count for nothing in a derby contest. By Lance Jenkinson Two of the Western Jets’ most promising young stars have been included in the 2020 NAB AFL Academy squad. Eddie Ford and Cody Raak were touted as two of the bottom-age Jets players to watch in the NAB League last season and they did not disappoint. The pair did enough to impress selectors for Vic Metro’s elite academy, which allows them to take part in high performance camps focusing on the players on and off-field education. Jets football operations manager Matthew Dervan was not surprised when Ford and Raak were named in the squad last week. “If you sat down at the start of the year and looked at who would get named, you would’ve backed those two in pretty heavily,” he said. “It’s obviously good news for those two boys.” Ford, Raak and the other 148 players from across Australia who are part of the AFL Academy will get a head start on their top age junior seasons by being part of these elite squads. The players will get the chance to learn tricks of the trade from elite coaches, many of whom have played at the highest level. They will also get to meet with AFL clubs to find out what they are looking for in players that could potentially be recruited at the 2020 draft. Even just training alongside the elite players in their age group will be a bonus for the pair. “They definitely get an advantage over the rest of the NAB League players,” Dervan said. “They’ll be exposed to a higher level coaching group and to the AFL clubs really early as well. “The camps start in December, so there will already be AFL clubs in and around the camp, speaking to players and getting to know the players. “It gives them an advantage in terms of what might come in terms of AFL club interviews and visits and the types of questions they might get asked next year. “To train with all the high level talent within the NAB League will also be a benefit.” Ford was the standout bottom-age player on the Western Jets list last season. The exciting 17-year-old forward from Yarraville Seddon Eagles polled the most votes of any bottom-ager in the club’s Barry Round Medal to earn the best first year player award. “He showed the whole package on the field,” Dervan said. “He’s an exciting talent playing as a high half-forward with a lot of tricks around goal and he moves really well. “He loves the big stage and performed excellently on grand final day in the curtain-raiser before the AFL grand final.

Cricket

After a clean sweep of victories in the opening round of the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association, local clubs have found the going a bit tougher at the halfway mark of the second round of matches. In particular, Altona and Yarraville are behind the eight ball. Altona has a mammoth run chase ahead, needing 275 to beat Endeavour Hills, while Yarraville could only muster 125 against Noble Park. Williamstown is better placed against Box Hill, sitting on 1-13 in the chase for a 200 target against Box Hill.

Baseball

Newport Rams had to be content with a series split with Waverley Wildcats in the Baseball Victoria summer league division 1. After winning game one of the short two-game series 8-2, the Rams could not repeat the dose, losing 5-3 on the road on Sunday. In division 2, Williamstown Wolves dropped its first game of the season, beaten 2-0 at home by Port Melbourne Mariners. The two sides will continue their three-game series at Port Melbourne on Saturday.

“He has some tremendous upside that I know AFL clubs are already really excited about looking forward to 2020.” Raak, aligned to the Western Bulldogs through its next generation academy, had a slow start to the season due to injury but enjoyed a big finish. The 17-year-old from Caroline Springs impressed in a key defensive post, but will be looking to mature into a swingman in his second season in the NAB League.

“Cody missed the early part of the year with an arm issue,” Dervan said. “That set him back a little bit, but he was really diligent with his rehab and was really patient in making sure that once he got back he was fully fit and ready to go. “He came back into the team as a forward and his movement and running patterns weren’t clicking, so we threw him down back and he thrived as one of the key defenders for us.”

Corey McCall will take over as coach of defeated Western Region Football League division 1 grand finalist Altona in 2020. McCall arrives at Sugargum Drive after a stint as an assistant coach with premiers West Preston Lakeside in the Northern Football League.
