Dog attack warning By Benjamin Millar A Footscray resident is warning pet owners to be on the lookout for a dangerous dog she says savagely mauled her beloved shih tzu Henry. Tina Andrianopoulos was taking Henry for his daily walk around the block on September 19 when they came upon a man holding a large white dog on a harness. Ms Andrianopoulos said they were attempting to pass when the other dog attacked without warning, only letting go after its owner repeatedly hit it on the head. “The dog just leapt onto Henry and locked onto the scruff of his neck,” she said. “Henry ran home to the backyard and hid under my deck. I chased him home and wrapped a towel around him.” Two women who witnessed the attack helped Ms Andrianopoulos rush the heavily bleeding Henry to the vet for emergency surgery. Henry has since had further surgery for his injuries and is slowly recovering from the attack. Ms Andrianopoulos said she has already spent more than $2500 on vet bills, with more to come, as well as having to take a fortnight off work to care for Henry. She said she had seen the dog and its owner a few times before the attack and the dog appeared to be a pit bull staffy cross. Ms Andrianopoulos reported the attack to both Maribyrnong council and Victoria Police, but is frustrated that more steps haven’t been taken to locate the dog and its owner. “The council says they can’t find him, so the dog’s obviously not registered,” she said. “I want him to be held responsible for what happened. I don’t want the dog put down or anything, but it should at least be muzzled. It’s a danger out there and I just get stressed thinking about it – what if a child walks within the length of the lead and it attacks them?” Maribyrnong council planning services director Nigel Higgins said councils are responsible for investigating reports of a dog attack. “This includes seizure of the offending dog if possible, identifying and prosecuting the offending dog’s owner relevant to the type and seriousness of the attack,” he said. “Council did respond to a dog attack on September 19 and at this stage the offending dog and its owner have not been identified. The investigation is ongoing.” Owners found in breach of the Domestic Animals Act 1994 can face a fine of up to $413 or court action. Mr Higgins said while a number of restrictions apply to pit bull breeds, these do not apply to cross bred dogs.

Kerbside recycling gets the green light ‘‘ ’’ Kerbside recycling resumed in Hobsons Bay on Monday, two months after the collapse of the council’s contracted recycler SKM. Recyclables collected from yellow bins will be taken to SKM’s former Laverton North plant after receivers KordaMentha entered an interim agreement with the council. Mayor Jonathon Marsden said the arrangement was temporary and short term but would remain until further notice. “We are still working hard on a long-term solution, however, in the meantime this interim

agreement will put an end to our recycling going to landfill,” he said. It follows the collapse of SKM Recycling, which was declared insolvent by the Supreme Court on August 2. The company’s closure has forced more
than 30 Victorian councils to come up with alternative recycling solutions. Cr Marsden urged residents to ensure their recycling bins were not contaminated or otherwise their materials could end up in landfill. “For Hobsons Bay, the biggest change to what was previously allowed is that we will no longer be able to recycle soft plastics, toys, CD and DVD cases in our yellow bins,” he said. “Aluminium foil is also not able to be recycled.”
Coles and Woolworths supermarkets accept flexible plastics for recycling. Hobsons Bay residents are being advised to put the lids from plastic bottles and containers in their rubbish bins and to remove metal lids from glass jars and bottles before recycling. Intersection gets high-tech crash system

Concern over House use By Benjamin Millar A $2 million redevelopment of Seddon’s Millennium House has sparked concerns it could lead to “a major intensification of activities” at the community hall. Australian Multicultural Community Services (AMCS) has lodged plans with Maribyrnong council for a major redevelopment of the hall, built on Nicholson Street in the 1960s by the local Polish community. Controversy arose last year after the Polish Association of Kingsville and Ladies Auxiliary (PAKLA) gifted the site to the AMCS, a not for profit organisation providing support services to seniors and their carers. A 2018 AMCS financial statement valued the
site at $5.2 million. Documents lodged in support of the application state that AMCS proposes to maintain the building as a community asset whilst using it as a base for administration supporting its community services. “There are proposed to be approximately 25 staff on the premises with 15 being in a full-time capacity in administration services. AMCS will continue to make the centre available to the general community for a range of uses such as religious, community groups and receptions.” But Nicholson Street resident Helen Westerman said AMCS has been short on detail regarding its future plans for the site, despite redevelopment plans being at an advanced stage.
“I am concerned that the proposed $2 million redevelopment of Millennium House represents a major intensification of activities on the site, compared to what it is currently being used for,” she said. “I believe there are questions around community consultation, residential impact and plans for the ongoing use of the site as a community asset. “These plans represent a major intensification of activities on the site and questions should be raised over whether this is actually an office development by stealth.” AMCS chief executive Elizabeth Drozd said the redevelopment is needed and would go through the same planning process as any other development.
A notorious Yarraville intersection is hosting an Australia-first trial of technology aimed at cutting the number of crashes on our roads. The intersection of Williamstown and Somerville roads, rated as one of Melbourne’s high-crash intersections, will be monitored by specialist light detection and ranging (LIDAR) sensors that will help Road Safety Victoria analyse all crashes and near misses. The technology will also be able to provide real-time warnings of potential hazards to vehicles that are fitted with connected technology. Roads Safety Minister Jaala Pulford said this is the first time LIDAR technology has been used in this way in Australia. She said closely analysing how crashes may have been caused should help provide information that can be used to make Victorian roads safer. “A third of road fatalities in Victoria happen at intersections – this trial will give us important insights on how to boost safety at intersections and keep more Victorians safe,” she said. “Victoria has always led the way in connected and automated vehicle technology, this is another way we’re making our infrastructure and policies support the uptake of this life-saving technology.” The project is funded through the state government’s $9 million Connected and Automated Vehicle Trial Grants Program. The trial is being carried out by Omni-Aware, a consortium of specialist technology companies that includes Intelligent Transport Services, Transoptim Consulting and IBIS Computer. Benjamin Millar

Justice of the peace (JP) volunteers are a vital part of our justice system. In Victoria, JPs have the power to witness many legal documents, including statutory declarations and affidavits, and to certify true copies of documents and a person’s identity. These documents can be required for a wide array of personal situations – in one appointment, a JP could be sitting alongside an excited couple signing the contract to buy their first home; in the next they could be witnessing a statement that will be rushed off to court immediately, or certifying visa documents with new Australians. “I enjoy it. Justices of the peace offer an important service and it’s a great way for me to give back to the community. This work can be done from an office in an official document signing station (DSS), or from your own workplace or home, without major disruption to your day. JPs make themselves available to the public and stakeholders on a regular basis and the workload and times available can be flexible. Typically, members of the community requiring your services will book an appointment and then come to you. Most appointments take just a few minutes. There are DSS’s right across Victoria. DSS’s operate out of local sites such as police stations, libraries, community hubs and more and members of the public attend to have their documents certified. All JPs who would like to volunteer on DSS’s are warmly welcomed. This is a great way to be part of the life of the community. What qualifications will I need? There are no specific qualifications required to become a justice of the peace in Victoria. However, to be eligible for appointment as a JP, applicants must: • be of or over the age of 18 years • not be an insolvent under administration. • be an Australian citizen Applicants must also satisfy the Attorney-General that they: • have satisfactorily completed the course of training prescribed for appointment as a JP. • have sufficient proficiency in the English language to
perform the duties of a JP. • ordinarily reside in Victoria. • are a fit and proper person to be appointed as a JP.
What kind of people make great JPs? While this is an administrative role, you will be working face-to-face with people and not every appointment is always straight forward. Crime rise in inner west
By Benjamin Millar A West Footscray family is locked in a battle with Maribyrnong council over the design of a childcare centre being built behind their home. Redevelopment of the Church Street Children’s Centre is nearing completion, ending a three-year saga in which a planned renovation led to the existing centre being demolished and rebuilt from the ground up. Khartoum Street resident Jess Lilley said while her family was aware the centre was being rebuilt, it had been in the dark about elements of the build, including a giant ‘solar tree’ towering over their yard.
Inner-west crime rates have risen almost four per cent in the past 12 months, driven by a sharp rise in drug offences and breaches of orders in Hobsons Bay. The total number of offences in Hobsons Bay rose from 6031 to 6267 in the year to June, new Crime Statistics Agency figures show, while Maribyrnong offences dropped slightly from 8296 to 8278. Crimes against the person in Hobsons Bay rose from 950 to 1020, including assaults, up from 497 to 573, and sexual offences, up from 138 to 161. Property and deception offences fell from 3713 to 3399, including burglaries dropping from 455 to 373. Vehicle theft fell from 233 to 195 and thefts from vehicles fell from 785 to 732. Drug offences rose from 257 to 390 – the highest in at least a decade – with use and possession accounting for the vast majority. Public order offences such as being a public nuisance rose from 430 to 472 offences. Justice procedures such as breaches of intervention orders climbed from 632 to 929, with breaches of orders up from 504 to 795. Crimes against the person in Maribyrnong were up from 993 to 1094, including assaults up from 575 to 617, sexual offences up from 123 to 141 and robbery up from 115 to 137. Property offences slid from 5602 to 5451 while drug offences slipped to their lowest level in at least a decade at 470.

Ms Lilley said she was pleased to see sustainable design elements being used in the project, but questioned the scale of the “intrusive and overwhelming” structure and whether more could have been done to protect the amenity and privacy of surrounding residents. She first flagged her concerns with the council in July, also offering suggestions to help reduce the impact of a raised playing area and stairwell directly overlooking the family’s yard and home. “I thought we could work together with the council and find a happy solution, but it looks like they have just been stringing us along,” she said. most of the roof cladding on the children’s centre is translucent sheeting to enable natural light into learning spaces. “The solar tree structures are part of the shade structure for the children’s play space and the design features provide an opportunity to promote environmental education to the children attending the centre,” she said. Memories of lifelong love By Goya Dmytryshchak Seaholme’s George and Maroula Said vividly remember their first dance, 75 years ago. The two, who recently celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary, grew up in the same neighbourhood as British subjects in Egypt. Mr Said, 86, first danced with Maroula when she was just 10. “When I was 11, there was a fancy dress ball and I dressed as a woman,” he said.

“I had a wire crinoline with a wig – Madame de Pompadour; white hair and I even had a beauty spot and a fan. “I went there and this guy came along and said, ‘Miss, would you like me to get a young man to dance with you?’ “I thought, I’m not dancing with any of my friends – they’ll twig if I speak – so I said, ‘No, I’d rather dance with a girl’. “He then went and brought Maroula. “I didn’t say a single word because she would have twigged who I was.” As they grew up together, Mrs Said admired her future husband “from a distance”. “When I got a bit older, we used to sneak and meet – thinking my mother didn’t know, but of course my mother knew all about it,” she said. Ten years after their first dance, the pair married on September 19, 1954. Two years on, the Suez Crisis hit and the Said family was placed under house arrest. George and Maroula, together with their baby daughter, Tassie, were given 10 days to

leave the country. They fled to London, where they lived as penniless refugees, during which time Mr Said joined the British trade union movement and became an advocate for change. Eventually, the family’s frozen assets were released and they migrated to Australia in 1962.

Mr Said said growing up together had given Maroula and himself a unique shared history. “Even now, we still talk about those days in Egypt,” he said. “We experienced going to England, not very happy there and we were struggling, so we have that, that we share. “We dare not lose it.”
Red dye source located by EPA A Brooklyn company responsible for turning a stretch of Stony Creek blood red has been ordered to take steps to prevent any further waste discharge from its premises. Marchem Australasia Pty Ltd, a chemical business on the old BP Castrol site on Geelong Road, has been slapped with a minor works pollution abatement notice by the Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) after an investigation linked the company with the red dye that polluted the creek recently. EPA western metropolitan regional manager Stephen Lansdell said the business was located almost three kilometres from where the pollution flowed into Stony Creek. “We understand the extensive red colour was the result of a five-litre bottle of dye, which was blown over in the wind and broke, in an area which was largely concealed from view, which really proves that a small oversight can have big consequences to our environment,” he said. Mr Lansdell said the business is now looking into why one of its drains was connected to a rainwater pipe that fed a stormwater drain, despite previously conducting a plumbing survey at the premises. Marchem Australasia Pty Ltd told the EPA that since the discharge it has taken steps to block an internal pump, seal a drainage pit and clean out affected drains. Benjamin Millar

“People would know from Masterchef that a vegan smokehouse was always a big dream for me,” he said. “I’ll be opening Fridays and Sundays over October. The focus is testing the waters, I’m really hoping people love the concept and the good food.” Toohey said the menu will reflect his mission of shifting people’s idea of cooking over coals requiring big slabs of meat by showcasing the overlooked qualities of slow-cooked vegetables. “It’s a challenge, but chefs love a challenge. This is getting back to how people used to eat – historically we haven’t eaten that much meat.” Promoting sustainable practices is also high on Toohey’s agenda, making Peachy Keen’s repurposed shipping containers and furniture made from pallets and other cast-off materials the perfect setting to share his food philosophy. “Everything is reconditioned and rebuilt, so it really represents everything I believe in,” he said.

By crafting a dinner party style menu of communal sharing plates at his pop-up venture, Toohey is also able to better manage his other passion – reducing food waste. His next step will be releasing a cookbook, all while he continues scouring for somewhere to open a permanent smokehouse, with a proper kitchen and garden plot for growing
his own vegetables. Hobsons Bay residents are warning others to be cautious of aggressive, swooping magpies. Altona resident Jared Smith said he had been swooped while jogging and at first thought someone had slapped him. “I went for a run two weeks ago down by the Esplanade, just by the life saving club, and I got a big whack on the back of the head,” he said. “To be honest, I thought it was person. “I spun round and there was a magpie fluttering about. “As I turned around, he got me again.” Mr Smith varied his route but was swooped again. “I was now being a bit cautious and I was running down Civic Parade. I remember reading on Facebook that there was one down on Civic Parade by one of the bus stops there, so I thought I’ll run on the other side of the road,” Mr Smith said. “Then last week, I went down on the Esplanade again and I ran on the other side of the road and at that point the same one got me again – twice.” Mr Smith said the swoops were hard enough to injure a frail elderly person or child. “It was halfway down a rabbit hole and when I grabbed its tail and pulled it out, it tried to defend itself.” Stewy said the arrival of spring meant snakes were emerging to find food and a mate. “We have had a few reports,” he said. “As the weather’s warmed up, the snakes are coming out of their brumation. We have caught snakes in Altona, Williamstown, Altona North.” Snakes are protected under the Wildlife Act and it is illegal to capture, harm, or kill them. Stewy is bound by law to relocate snakes to a suitable habitat within five kilometres of where they were caught.
Snake season is in full swing in the west, with land clearing for the West Gate Tunnel revealing a tiger snake double the size of that usually seen in suburbia. Stewart Gatt, aka Stewy the Snake Catcher, was last week called to Spotswood after construction workers saw a large tiger snake under the West Gate Bridge. “We’ve been clearing some snakes up for the guys that are doing the West Gate Tunnel project,” Stewy said. “It was about 1.5, 1.6 metres. They can grow that big, it’s just we very rarely see them that size.
His advice to people who see a snake on public property is to move away and give the snake plenty of room. “If the snake’s on your property, remove any pets or children out of the way and call a professional snake catcher,” Stewy said. “Don’t try and catch it yourself. “If they do suspect that a pet has been bitten, straight to the vets … Or if a person’s been bitten, call an ambulance. Songs to bring glee Jacobs says a Hobart offshoot has been a success since launching earlier this year, while the idea for a western suburbs chapter came via a conversation with musician Katie Pryce. “She’s a Yarraville local and she was very keen,” she said. “The first week we are doing a Bowie tribute night, it’s always an eclectic jukebox mix of songs.” The format of Glee West will mirror that of the Melbourne club, with three new songs chosen each week. Jacobs said anyone feeling shy about starting out should know they will be in a supportive environment. “We never ask anyone to sing solos or anything like that, you can sing as loudly or as softly as you like,” she said. Lovers of song are being urged to sing up a storm when the west’s very own glee club launches in Yarraville. ‘Glee West’ sing-along sessions will be held every Wednesday night at The Victoria Hotel, kicking off on October 9. Melbourne Glee Club founder Vicky Jacobs, who has been running the adult singing group for about 14 years – starting well before the Glee TV program popularised the pastime – said they are perfect for people who want to sing with others without the pressure of committing to a choir. “People would say to me they would love to be in a choir, but they can’t commit because they’re just too busy,” she said. “I thought let’s start a group where there are no barriers to participating, where we just meet up and sing songs.”

Fast charger a game changer By Goya Dmytryshchak The only public fast charger for electric vehicles between the CBD and Torquay has been installed in Altona under Hobsons Bay council’s bid to be carbon neutral by next year. The council is aiming for the community to produce zero net emmissions by 2030. Mayor Jonathon Marsden said the 50kW DC fast charger at Hobsons Bay Civic Centre would be free to the public under a one-year trial. “The charging station can charge a DC charge compatible vehicle in as little as 30-40 minutes, depending on the vehicle and its battery state, compared to a seven to eight hour charge
time using a slower charger,” he said. “This will be the only high capacity electric vehicle fast charging station … between Torquay and the city, which will plug a major gap in our city’s electric vehicle support infrastructure, allowing motorists to top-up their vehicle as they travel across the western suburbs.” The move follows a seven-year push by residents such as Williamstown’s Jeff Challis, who provides an electric vehicle charger to the public at his Yarraville business. Mr Challis believes that providing free charging stations will encourage people to buy electric vehicles. Bloomberg Energy Finance predicts electric
and conventional vehicles will be similarly priced by 2025. “As soon as you put something locally then people will take them up, and hopefully it’s going to help out with less pollutants in the air so it’s going to help everybody’s health,” Mr Challis said. “And obviously, they’re much quieter so less noise pollution.” Other council initiatives include transitioning its fleet to electric vehicles, installing solar panels and building retrofits, LED streetlights and plans to source 30 per cent of its energy from Victorian renewables. To use the charging station, motorists need to register via the Chargefox EV app.

Cinema owner revealed Reading Cinemas has been revealed as the movie complex being built at Altona North. The six-screen, 3000 square metre cinema complex will be next to a Woolworths-anchored shopping centre known as Millers Junction at 290-298 Millers Road. It will have the first ‘titan luxe auditorium’ in Melbourne’s west, with Dolby Atmos immersive sound, reclining seats and screens measuring some 20 metres. Property fund manager Charter Hall is building the $70 million shopping centre as the last stage of the $250 million Millers Junction precinct. Reading Cinemas Australia’s managing director Mark Douglas said he was excited to bring state-of-the-art cinema to the west. “Altona North is a thriving area and we look forward to providing a theatrical experience
for our new guests that is of a world class standard,” he said. Charter Hall diversified development head Ben Dodwell said he welcomed the global brand. “Reading Cinemas have been a market leader in leisure and entertainment innovation, especially making the cinema experience accessible in Australia,” he said. Other stores at Millers Junction will include BWS, The Reject Shop, the Jolly Miller Cafe and a medical centre and pharmacy. MY PLACE Chamber Made artistic director Tamara Saulwick can’t imagine giving up the many charms of Seddon and surrounds. She speaks with Benjamin Millar. I’ve been in the area for nearly 20 years now. I certainly didn’t come for the coffee back then, but am positively spoiled for choice these days! Like many of my artist friends I came to the area because it was one of the last of the inner suburbs that still seemed affordable at the time. I have grown roots here now and can’t imagine leaving. What do you like most about the area? It’s close to the city and to the beach, and if you head further west you’re down the coast before you know it. I like the way we have Footscray to our left and Yarraville to our right; both different but wonderful in their own ways. What are your favourite local places, spaces, and/or eateries? Feedback cafe is a favourite. They are great people who run it and they put on a fantastic music gig every Friday night – supporting local musicians at a genuinely grass roots level. I am regular at Advieh, I love catching a film at the Sun Theatre, and I am a devotee of my local fruit and vegie store Pompello, where the conversation is as good as the produce. What drew you to the arts? I love the way artists are constantly seeking new ways of seeing, understanding and articulating the world around us. This is what draws me to the arts and keeps me here.
What are the most challenging and rewarding aspects of being the artistic director at Chamber Made? The most challenging aspect of my job is that it requires me and all those around me to take a leap of faith every time we make a new work. We never know where we will end up or exactly how we will get there — so we are constantly dancing with uncertainty. The reward is the privilege of collaborating with great artists. What can you tell us about the upcoming performances of Diaspora? It’s a true cross-artform collaboration being created by a team of artists all at the top of their game. For Robin Fox – the lead artist – it’s an opportunity to combine the many strands of his practice as an audio-visual artist, composer and musician, into one sumptuous and ambitious work. Think sci-fi themes combined with synthesizers, holograms, and lasers. What is something people may be surprised to learn about you? I’ve recently become obsessed by cryptic crosswords. For years I never understood how people could work them out. Now I’ve become one of those people. Diaspora, a new Chamber Made work by Robin Fox and collaborators will be performed at The Substation from October 3 to 6 as part of Melbourne International Arts Festival. This will mean our city’s kerbside recyclables will no longer be going to landfill. SPORT Hemphill leaves CYMS with no regrets Before his impending jetsetting across the globe, Yuma Hemphill had unfinished business to take care of with Williamstown CYMS in the Victorian Amateur Football Association Premier C this season. The star onballer was not content with merely winning the league best-and-fairest in 2018, he wanted more, much more. Only a promotion and premiership double could soothe the CYs pain of 2018, when they finished on top of the ladder, only to bow out of the finals in straight sets with two losses by less than a kick. “Last year was pretty devastating,” Hemphill said. “That sort of motivated us for this year.” First and foremost, Hemphill wanted team success at Williamstown CYMS. The CYs delivered this year, going through the regular season undefeated en route to the minor premiership, winning the first final to earn promotion and then beating Ajax by 18 points in a hard-fought grand final. The cherry on the top for Hemphill was another league best-and-fairest. “To be recognised by the umpires is a pretty nice feeling,” he said. “It was a bit of a surprise
again this year, but there must be something the umpires really like with the way I play.” Hemphill is one of the smaller players in Williamstown CYMS’ midfield, but he is one of the most durable. The 25-year-old has in the past suffered concussions from his unwavering attack on the ball, but the past two and a half years he has been injury-free. The continuity in his game has allowed to showcase all of his strengths and he is now recognised as the top player in Premier C. “I haven’t missed a game in over two and a half years now,” Hemphill said. “There is an element of luck, but I also make sure I do a strong pre-season and keep myself fit so that I’m good to go when the games come around. “I just worked on consistency and spending all the time I’m on the ground in the midfield, which means you’re near the ball, which tends to help a little bit as well [when umpires are casting votes].” While Hemphill might be self-effacing, he is not afraid to show his love for Williamstown CYMS and the suburb he represents. “Williamstown is where I grew up, where I
played my junior footy and it was where I was working up until recently,” he said. “It is a big part of my life, so it’s always an honour each week to go out and play with my mates.” Hemphill praised the influence of ruckmen Dylan Jones and Nick Blackney in getting him the ball. He believes his individual honour had a lot to do with the work his fellow midfielders did off the ball to afford him space. “I don’t always get the heavy tag because of the players in the midfield alongside me,” Hemphill said. “It helps to have a really good ruckmen too.” Hemphill will now embark on a new challenge in his life, moving to Toronto, Canada, to continue his work as an osteopath. AFL hero humble in victory By Lance Jenkinson In the ultimate show of sportsmanship, Bachar Houli stepped away from the euphoric celebrations of the Richmond team after the final siren sounded on their second AFL premiership win in three years at the MCG on Saturday and offered some consoling words to devastated GWS Giants players, who had been on the receiving end of a brutal 89-point thrashing. It summed up the selflessness of Houli, a former Spotswood and Western Jets junior, who should be admired and seen as a role model for young people of the western suburbs. Houli did not think the gesture was extraordinary, but it showed how much he cared about his fellow competitors. The 31-year-old said part of the reason why he did it was to show how much respect he has for the Giants as an organisation and the individuals within it. “There’s plenty of time to celebrate and I’ll celebrate with these boys for the next few days,” Houli said. “I just wanted to show my gratitude to a great football club [in GWS Giants], a football club that shows a lot of care. “GWS is very dear to my heart because they come from a part of Sydney where a lot of my family and my relatives live and they do a lot of work in the community, and that’s something I’m really passionate about and they’re always on the front foot with that. “I’ve got some friends who work at GWS as well and [former Western Jets teammate] Callan Ward plays there. “For me, it was very important to show gratitude and congratulate them.” Houli was magnificent for Richmond on AFL grand final day. A hard running half-back flanker, Houli set up many of the Tigers forward thrusts and stopped a number of GWS Giants’ attacking moves with his reading of the play. Houli finished with 14 kicks, 12 handballs, seven marks and six tackles. His impact was recognised by the coaches, who voted him as the second best player on the ground behind Norm Smith Medal winner Dustin Martin. Flanked by his tight-knit family in the rooms after the game, Houli was proud of the team’s achievements. “It’s a great feeling,” he said. “I’m very humbled by it.”

Houli seems to get better with age. With more than 200 top level games to his name now, Houli broke into the All Australian team for the first time in 2019. He is a big-game performer with two of his most memorable games being Richmond’s two grand final wins. In the 2017 grand final win over Adelaide, Houli racked up 25 disposals and 694 metres gained. Houli’s strong late-career form is perhaps a by-product of how he approaches his football and life.
“I’ve got written on my hand the word ‘enjoy’ and that’s a simple motto in my life,” he said. “I try to enjoy every single moment in my life. “I’m also truly grateful for God. “He gives me pleasures, he gives me success and even when times are down, he knows what is best for me”. Houli is thankful that Damien Hardwick is his coach at Richmond. Hardwick creates a positive environment that Houli and his teammates can thrive in. “He’s the benchmark of this football club,”
Houli said. “He’s all about positivity, he’s all about smiles and enjoying the opportunity. “When you enjoy each other’s company and enjoy the moment out there, you enjoy it more, rather than just focusing on outcomes.” One-time Williamstown VFL player Kane Lambert and former Point Cook resident Toby Nankervis also featured in Richmond’s premiership side. Adam Kennedy, who got his start at Melton and the Western Jets, was part of the GWS Giants team, while Ward, from Spotswood, missed the big game through injury.

Familiar face returns to help Phoenix rise again Altona East Phoenix has turned to a familiar face in Terry Antoniadis to lead it back to relevance in the Football Victoria men’s state league 2 competition. The Phoenix endured a rough season this year, finishing last on the ladder with just four wins from 22 outings. They hit rock bottom in July when they conceded 10 goals in a game against Hoppers Crossing. The only positive for the Phoenix was there was no relegation in 2019 with the leagues being re-structured next season. Antoniadis is not concerned with the past, only what he can do to get the Phoenix back to being competitive next campaign. “I only went and saw them play once this year and I don’t really want to comment on this season that just went,” he said. “For us it’s about moving forward and improving. “We’ve got a lot of ground to make up because we’re coming from a long way back.” Antoniadis has devoted most of his life to soccer.

As a player, he represented the Phoenix, Western Suburbs, Sunshine George Cross and Richmond. Once his playing career was over, he took on a coaching role with the Phoenix before leaving to coach Western Suburbs for two and a half years.
With so many campaigns under the belt, Antoniadis was exhausted by soccer and needed a break. The 45-year-old took the past 18 months off before committing to coach the Phoenix. Now he is champing at the bit to get back into it. “I’ve had an 18 month break from the game and I needed one,” Antoniadis said. “To be honest, for 90 per cent of that time I didn’t miss the game at all and I really enjoyed my break. “Being a competitive person, there’s been a void there because I haven’t been involved with the game. “Just being around a group of people who are working towards trying to achieve something. “I’m ready to go now and I’m looking forward to it. “It’s good to go back to a club that I’m familiar with and I’m familiar with the people that are there and I know the president really well.” It will certainly not be an easy job for Antoniadis.
The wheeling and dealing he does over the summer will go some way to deciding whether his first year will be a success or not. “It’s a big challenge and we know there’s a lot of work to be done, but I’m excited to be a part of it,” he said. “We’ll have a look at the people that were there this year and give them an opportunity to stake a claim. “We’re also under no illusions that we’re going to have to recruit and to recruit heavily. “Not just good players, but good people. “We want to get everything right on and off the park. “We want to put the right people in who are there for the right reasons.” Antoniadis wants to bring the glory days back to Altona East Phoenix. When he played at the Phoenix, it was one of the most revered clubs in Victoria. “We want to be better than state league 2, we’ll aim to be better than that.” Lance Jenkinson
Jet wins top award By Lance Jenkinson Will Kennedy only spent a short time with the Western Jets, but he sure made an impact. In his only season in the blue and gold, Kennedy etched his name in the club’s record books, taking out the Barry Round Medal for best-and-fairest in an impressive 2019 NAB League campaign. Kennedy felt like he would be around the mark when it came to the awarding of the club’s highest honour, but did not arrive at the count with confidence because of the high quality individuals on the Jets’ list. “[Lucas] Rocci winning the Morrish Medal [the league’s best-and-fairest], I sort of thought he would take it out,” Kennedy said. “We did have a few boys, like Archi Manton and Daly Andrews, who I thought were a chance. “I thought I’d be in the conversation, but I was pretty surprised when I actually won it. “It’s a big honour. “I’ve really loved my year with the Jets.” Kennedy was contacted by the Western Jets in the off season to consider joining the club. The ruckman had spent the previous two seasons with Sandringham Dragons with his second year marred by inconsistent form and injuries. Instead of signing with a VFL club and potentially spending the whole season at local football level, Kennedy saw the move to the Jets as a fantastic opportunity to remain in an elite environment and show the recruiters what he could achieve at his full potential. “Obviously going to VFL, if I’m not getting a game, I’d have to go and play local football, and that might not have been the best for me at the time,” Kennedy said. “I got called up by Sandringham [VFL side] at the start of the year and I thought it’s probably going to be hard to crack into that team. “Playing in the NAB League again gave me consistent footy, which is what I wanted to do. “I didn’t really play that consistently last year and I had a few injuries, so I knew with a good run of games, I’d be able to build some form.” Kennedy was the anchor of a Western Jets side that featured in the finals this season. His influence in the ruck and around the ground was profound. He was one of the most consistent players in the team. “I only polled the most votes out of the round once, but I sort of polled in most of the games,” Kennedy said. “Consistency got me the medal in the end.” Kennedy grew from the experience of playing with the Western Jets. venture into unchartered waters. “I thought this is going to help me get out of my comfort zone, get over the West Gate Bridge and meet a whole new group of people and grow myself and mature a bit,” Kennedy said. “I wasn’t really sure what to expect, but it was a pleasant surprise and I loved it there.” As one of the most experienced players in the squad, Kennedy was a driving force for his teammates.

“I tried to lead by example,” he said. Kennedy got his chance to play two VFL games as the 23rd player with Frankston. He featured in games against Box Hill Hawks and Collingwood, the AFL team he supports. “That exposure to the bigger bodies allowed me to go back and play better because I was used to it.” He thanked his parents Bruce and Phillipa for their unwavering support over the years.
Williamstown Football Club has entered into a partnership with the Adelaide Crows, aimed at strengthening the women’s sections of both clubs. The agreement will have the Seagulls open up five spots in their team each week for Crows players to feature in their VFL Women’s side from next season and beyond. It will immediately strengthen the Seagulls team, which has won just five games across its two years of existence, including just one in 2019. The Crows will benefit from their players having added exposure to a strong state league women’s competition. As part of the agreement, Williamstown coaches, staff and players will link up with the Crows AFLW team during its Melbourne trips. Williamstown chief executive officer Jason Reddick is enthusiastic about the partnership. “Williamstown was seeking to align with an AFLW club in order to receive access to elite-level playing talent and mentoring for our coaching and high performance staff,” he said. “We greatly respect what Adelaide has achieved in the AFLW and we are excited about how this partnership will help advance our own VFLW program.” Crows general manager of football Phil Harper said the new partnership with Williamstown would replace the Crows former alignment with the NT Thunder.
