Rampage caught on film By Goya Dmytryshchak Two thugs, who have been described as “morons”, last week caused damage to buildings, marine vessels and cars in the Seaworks Maritime Precinct at Williamstown. The site has Williamstown police station and the state’s water police on one side, while on the other lies BAE Systems, a multinational defence and security company. Wendy Pelns, manager of the Pirates Tavern – the waterside clubhouse of the Williamstown Maritime Association – said two males were caught on multiple security cameras early Wednesday morning. “They had broken into the Ann Street Pier and broken into a number of boats on the pier,” she said. “They did a fair bit of damage on the boats. Then they proceeded to enter into the Seaworks site – they cut a side lock. “They tried to get into Doug’s shed [Doug Tannahill from Seaport Sails], which is next to the Pirates Tavern, and couldn’t get in. “They then sussed out the Pirates Tavern, walked … down the side way, smashed a window.” She said, once inside, the pair wheeled in four wheelie bins. “They were going over the bar and under the bar … we’ve got it on camera,” Ms Pelns said. She said the pair – who she described as morons – left with nothing when the alarm was activated. Korevaar Marine Group, which had some vessels broken into, declined to comment. Seaworks chief executive Glenn Jones said the entire precinct was covered by security. “The whole thing was very odd,” he said. “Considering that we’re so close to the police station, you just wonder what goes through their heads.” Hobsons Bay crime investigation unit is investigating.

Artists get industrious The industrial revolution is beckoning. A series of four workshops is being held for artists who may want to develop a project for the biennial Art & Industry Festival. Celebrating the western suburbs’ industrial heritage, festival highlights include the Industrial Fashion parade, featuring performances and costumes inspired by local industries. The last festival included films celebrating the lives of working men and women in Hobsons Bay which were screened in shipping containers. There was also a photographic exhibition about night-shift workers displayed at night. Festival director Donna Jackson, of Hubcap Productions, said the workshops were a way for artists to meet and collaborate. “I’m trying to get people to come along who might have ideas for the festival or they might want to do an art project but they don’t know how to do it,” she said. The workshops will be held around Hobsons Bay on October 6 and 13 and November 3 and 19. The first will be at the South Kingsville studio of award-winning jewellery and costume designer Anna Kolusniewski. Twenty places are available. Applications close September 30. From broken eggshells to a clearer mind ‘‘ ’’ People are being urged not to walk on eggshells when it comes to talking and learning about mental health. Mental Health Week, from October 5 to 11, will be marked in Altona with a week-long event at Altona’s Louis Joel Arts and Community Centre. Counsellor and art therapist Mairead Ashcroft said people could drop in during the week to find out about mental health services and view an art exhibition made from broken eggshells by clients of Mind Australia at

Williamstown. Ms Ashcroft said the event was for everyone. “Mental health is just the same as our physical health,” she said. “It’s a part of us that needs to be addressed. Just like you don’t have to have a physical-health diagnosis to care for

your physical health, you don’t have to have a mental-health diagnoisis to care for your mental health.” Mind Australia arts therapist Lee Agius said the art exhibition by clients was called Strength in Fragility, Beauty in Imperfection. “It’s been a group process of collecting the eggshell and using the eggshells as just another medium to work with and having that metaphor of something that is delicate and fragile yet still can find strength,” she said. Hobsons Bay council is continuing

to campaign for a youth mental health headspace service to be established at Newport Community Hub. In 2015-16, Hobsons Bay’s mental health inpatient admissions for 10 to 17 year olds (9.06 per 1000 people) was higher than the rate for the western metropolitan region (6.46 per 1000 people) and the rest of Victoria (7.85 per 1000 people). Footscray’s global ‘cool’ tag By Benjamin Millar One of the worst kept local secrets has hit the global stage with Time Out magazine naming Footscray as one of the “50 coolest neighbourhoods in the world”. The list, compiled by Time Out editors from countries across the globe, ranked 50 of the planet’s most exciting cultural and culinary hotspots. Footscray came in as the 13th coolest neighbourhood in the world right now, the only mainland Australian suburb to make the list. “This inner-city neighbourhood is the brightest jewel of west Melbourne, primarily thanks to the migrant communities that call it home,” the listing stated. “A melting pot of cultures from places as far-flung as Vietnam and Ethiopia have brought touches of their home countries, which means you can scoop up a goat curry with fresh injera, slurp up pho and hunt down the best cannoli in town – all in the same street.” Vietnamese banh mi from Nhu Lan bakery, craft beer at Mr West and the “gastro cornucopia that is Footscray Market” were all cited as highlights of any visit to Footscray. The suburb’s rapidly growing arts scene also helped the ranking, thanks in large part to the Footscray Community Arts Centre. Arroios in Lisbon scored top spot as the planet’s coolest neighbourhood, followed by Shimokitazawa in Tokyo and Onikan in Lagos. Waterfront in Hobart was the sole other Australian suburb to make the top 50. Footscray also topped a Time Out survey quizzing people on Melbourne’s most underrated suburb. Maribyrnong mayor Martin Zakharov said the listing should help attract more tourism to the area. “I’m proud that we were one of only two places in Australia that made it onto the list,” he said. “In terms of multiculturalism, it’s one of the best places on the planet. “For a long time it had a reputation for things like crime, but it’s a changing demographic and that is disappearing.”

Toilet plan is a no drainer

By Goya Dmytryshchak A 13-year-old Altona boy is fighting to be able to play netball for one more year with the girls he has been competing with since age eight. Brodie McCleish, had played centre, wing attack and goal attack as the only boy on his netball team. He has just been accepted to play in the Victorian squad in the men’s 17 and under reserves. His mother, Renee, said there was a one-year gap before Brodie could play again with the Altona Netball Association at his local Altona Sports Centre. “At Altona, he’s not even allowed to play in the mixed team in the adult competition until he’s 14. “They’ve brought it down to 14 but my issue is, there’s still a 12-month gap.” She said if the association re-labelled the competition mixed or open, Brodie or any other boy would be able to play netball. “Now that he’s made the state side, he has to play netball somewhere so ideally we’d like him to play with the people that he’s played with since he was under 9s,” Ms McCleish said. “Altona haven’t evolved whereas some of the other associations over the other side of town have evolved.” Brodie’s father, Guy, said he experienced discrimination when he played netball 20 years ago and nothing had changed. “They call it a mixed competition but males are allowed to play up ‘til they’re 13,” he said. “Once they hit 13, they believe the boys start to grow into teenagers and they think it’s not fair for boys to play against girls. “The hardest part for Brodie now is that he’s got nowhere to play in his region.” Brodie has been invited to play in the Junior

Men’s League (M League), which is in Donvale in Melbourne’s outer-east. Netball Victoria said it couldn’t comment on specific cases. Netball Victoria’s Promoting Male Participation in Netball Policy states that males from age 13 are not permitted to participate in female competitions. “To provide opportunities for participation, males should be supported and encouraged to play mixed and where possible, male single

gender competition,” the policy states. The Altona Netball Association’s Diana Porter, speaking on behalf of the committee, said one more mixed team was needed for competition in the 15 and under. “The 15 and under is where he [Brodie] would go to now,” she said. “We have been able to get three teams in from the clubs but we need four to run a competition.”

Maribyrnong council will spend $3.5 million rolling out and cleaning 10 new public toilets over the next decade under a strategy adopted at last week’s council meeting. Hansen Reserve in West Footscray, Grimes Reserve by the Maribyrnong River in Footscray and Cruickshank Park near Claire Court in Yarraville are the top three priorities, expected to be in place within three years. Seddon Village, Yarraville Gardens and Cranwell Park in Braybrook are listed as medium term priorities, due within four to six years. Quarry Park in Footscray, Johnson Reserve in West Footscray, Dobsons Reserve in Maidstone and Robert Barrett Reserve in Maribyrnong are due to have toilets installed in seven to 10 years, rounding out the new locations and taking the overall Maribyrnong-wide tally to 18. A council report on the plan noted that public toilets are critical in encouraging longer stays in parks and activity centres. “The existing provision is not considered sufficient to cater for the demand, particularly in the city’s regional and municipal open spaces,” it stated. Strong support for The Hansen Reserve toilet and plans to redevelop the park with a new playground and bike skills track moved it to the top of the priority list. The cost of maintaining and cleaning each toilet is estimated at $17,000 per year. Benjamin Millar

Probe into rubbish dump

Pet blitz is cheap as chips

By Goya Dmytryshchak A large amount of soil has been dumped in an industrial pocket of Altona, which has become a hot spot for illegal dumping of rubbish. Local resident Angela Whiffin spotted the soil dumped to the north of the Melbourne Ballpark site. The site borders the Burns Road estate, which is vacant industrial land with multiple owners, that is littered with vehicle wreckage and other rubbish. The Burns Road estate is home to native grasslands listed as endangered under state legislation and as critically endangered under federal legislation. “I know it’s all privately-owned land but it’s vacant. It’s all pristine grassland and it’s got really rare wildflowers in there,” Ms Whiffin said. “I have heard that it is a habitat for the striped legless lizard. “I noticed there’s a whole lot of landfill been dumped on a certain section of it near the baseball stadium. “It’s concerning because I don’t know what they’re going to do with the land, it’s just been dumped. “The grassland there is pristine. It just hurts to see beautiful grasslands just being dumped on and trashed.” Hobsons Bay council last week said it had identified the parties responsible for dumping the soil and was working with them to arrange its removal. Council officers investigating the matter said the soil had recently been transported from another site and placed along the road reserve next to the Melbourne Ballpark. The council is examining if the parties can be fined for a breach of the Planning and Environment Act.

Pet care is in the spotlight with an adoption drive and microchip blitz coming to the inner-west this October. Second Chance Animal Rescue (SCAR) and Dulux have partnered to host a pet adoption drive at Maribyrnong and Altona Bunnings stores between 11am and 2pm on Sunday, October 6. Shoppers will be able to meet adoption-ready cats and dogs and chat to staff about the adoption process. The adoption drive continues Dulux’s support of SCAR, coming on top of its $140,000 contribution to the shelter’s new animal hospital. SCAR founder Marisa Debattista said SCAR expects to adopt out 1400 homeless cats and dogs over the next 12 months, as well as treating more than 3000 patients in its Community Animal Hospital and de-sex 300 animals for free via its Pet Outreach Program. Meanwhile, PETstock is having a microchip blitz at its Altona North store this month, charging a $10 flat fee to microchip cats, dogs and small furry animals. Victorian law requires cats and dogs to be microchipped as a condition of registration. PETstock’s Jess Guilfoyle said the discounted price was a fraction of the usual $80 cost. The microchip blitz is on Saturday, October 19 and Sunday, October 20. Pet owners are encouraged to make an appointment online for their local PETstock store online at petstock.com.au

However, the council said it was not responsible for the collection of rubbish on privately-owned vacant industrial land. Mayor Jonathon Marsden said the disposal of dumped rubbish was costly to ratepayers. “Illegally dumped rubbish is unsightly and costs ratepayers close to $400,000 per year to clean up,” he said.

More than 50 West Footscray workers who walked off the job last week joined the global climate strike on Friday in a push for more clean energy jobs. Fenner Dunlop workers downed tools on September 16 over frustration at what they claim is an unwillingness by the company to raise their basic wage without stripping conditions around working hours and overtime. The workers have maintained a picket outside the Geelong Road factory, warning they are willing to stay on strike until management reaches a compromise. National Union of Workers organiser Angus Middleton said about 50 workers – the entire factory floor workforce – are taking indefinite protected industrial action for “decent wages and conditions”. “We’ve completely shut down production here. Workers shouldn’t have to work forced overtime and 60 hour weeks just to earn a living wage,” he said. “Fenner Dunlop is owned by the Michelin Group, so they’ve got the money to provide decent jobs to the people doing all the work. “We are organised, united and won’t back down until we win job security and a decent wage.” The workers also threw their support behind Friday’s historic global climate strike and the national climate change rallies held in cities around Australia including Melbourne’s Treasury Gardens. Fenner Dunlop is a major producer of conveyer belts for the mining industry, particularly for coal operations. Fenner Dunlop did not respond to requests for comment.

National Children’s Week is being celebrated in Hobsons Bay with a three-hour picnic at Altona’s Logan Reserve. The council is inviting the municipality’s youngest residents to its event, which will feature storytelling, live performances, arts and crafts and roving entertainers. Children’s Week will be celebrated in Victoria from October 19-27. This year’s theme focuses on the right of all children to be healthy, safe and happy under the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. Councillor Tony Briffa said the council’s 13th annual Children’s Week picnic would also have drumming workshops, clay bug-making sessions, face-painting and fire trucks. “Twenty five local community groups have come together to deliver a stellar line-up of free fun activities which are guaranteed to put a smile on the dial,” Cr Briffa said. “This is also a great opportunity to celebrate the talents, skills and abilities of our local children with JD Dance Group and One Tree Kindergarten performing at the picnic.” The Children’s Week picnic is on Wednesday, October 23 from 10am-1pm at Logan Reserve, corner Pier and Queen streets, Altona. Tributes flow for climate scientist By Benjamin Millar Tributes have been pouring in for leading Footscray climate scientist Dr Penny Whetton following her death, aged 61. Dr Whetton, the wife of Victorian Greens Senator Janet Rice, died suddenly at the couple’s holiday home in north-west Tasmania, sitting in what Senator Rice said was her favourite spot. An internationally renowned scientist, Dr Whetton was also a keen photographer, visual artist, nature lover, weather watcher, and ardent Western Bulldogs fan. She died on September 11 at their Sisters

Beach retreat while Senator Rice was in Canberra. In a heartfelt post to Facebook, Senator Rice praised the memory of an “all round beautiful human” whose death was unexpected, unbelievable and “so so sad”. The couple first met 38 years ago, when Dr Whetton was living as a man. They have been married for 33 of those years and have two sons, John and Leon. Dr Whetton was a key part of the CSIRO’s national climate projections work and the lead author of three Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change reports, including the Nobel Peace Prize-winning fourth assessment report.

Senator Rice wrote of her wife’s many other abilities, love of nature and role as a “phenomenal font of knowledge”. “She was a fabulous parent to John and Leon – always supportive, giving, and delighted in sharing her and their passions – language, music, football, cricket, politics, painting, photography. She was a role model and an inspiration for so many trans and gender diverse people.” An online memorial fund established in Dr Whetton’s honour to support revegetation and erosion control work at Sisters Beach has raised close to $10,000. A memorial service will be held from 2pm Sunday, October 6 at Footscray Community Arts Centre.

A flair for home-grown Nornie Bero is a chef on a mission. The driving force behind new Yarraville cafe Mabu Mabu, the Torres Strait-born chef is intent on making native ingredients a part of our everyday. The cafe’s name comes from a Torres Strait saying that means ‘help yourself’, reflecting the love and welcome Bero wants to extend. Bero said Yarraville’s “village” feel also reflects her notion of food being the perfect way to bring people together. “I have always loved this area, it has that village feel to it,” she said. The cafe opening in the former Cobb Lane is not the first step of the Mabu Mabu journey – Bero and her business partner Hugo Lamb have been operating a catering business and a stall at South Melbourne Market. Bero’s passion for native ingredients such

as pepperberry, saltbush and crocodile underpins a menu featuring a wide variety of indigenous herbs, fruits, succulents and spices, all showcased in a range of home made sauces, jams, hot sauces and chutneys. Growing up as part of the Komet Tribe of the Meriam People of Mer Island in the Torres Strait, these ingredients were simply a natural part of life for Bero. Moving to Melbourne, she realised how far the country still has to go in opening its eyes to its own home-grown fare. “Australia has got this great natural resource – I want to get it out of the top-end restaurants and this idea of superfoods and to make it affordable and available to everybody.” Mabu Mabu is at 13 Anderson Street. Apartments to tower over shops By Benjamin Millar Footscray’s Nicholson Street heritage strip could have its first 10-storey tower under plans lodged with Maribyrnong council for a new 20-apartment project. The owners of 151 and 153 Nicholson Street are seeking to redevelop the site, currently occupied by double-storey shops that date back to the late 1800s. The 358 square-metre site sits between Nicholson Street and Trugo Lane in Footscray’s activity centre zone, just to the north of Irving Street.

An urban context report supporting the application states that the new building will be of contemporary design, with two shops at ground level topped by 10 parking spaces and 20 apartments – eight one-bedroom, eight two-bedroom and four three-bedroom. “While the proposed building will be somewhat higher than its immediate neighbours, the setbacks of its upper-levels from each end of the site will protect both the Nicholson Street and Trugo Lane streetscapes and the amenity of the neighbourhood,” it states. “The development will contribute to the

revitalisation and transformation of Footscray into a vibrant residential, employment and recreation centre and be of high architectural and urban design quality.” The development would attempt to recognise the existing building’s historic and aesthetic significance by retaining the Nicholson Street façade, but the remainder would be demolished. The report argues for a reduction from the required 15 to 10 car parking spaces due to the project’s central location and proximity to transport. A decision on the proposal will be made in coming months.

Stony Creek hit again Authorities investigating a blood red discharge in Stony Creek have closed in on the likely source. The Environment Protection Authority believes it has pinpointed the premises responsible for the discharge, discovered in Stony Creek at St Leonards Avenue near Cruickshank Park in Yarraville on Saturday. While the evidence suggests the material is not harmful to humans or pets, the EPA is maintaining its ongoing advice to avoid contact with the water in Stony Creek. An EPA officer attended the site on Saturday evening following the first pollution report and returned again on Sunday. Officers returned on Monday to continue the investigation. Western metropolitan region manager Stephen Lansdell said EPA believes it has identified the source of the discolouration and has taken samples from the creek to determine

whether it is a match for any substances at the suspected premises, which will only be publicly identified once a match is confirmed. “If the match is confirmed, EPA will not hesitate to take action in line with the Compliance and Enforcement policy and ensure any necessary preventative structural and procedural changes are implemented to ensure the discharge doesn’t happen again,” he said. “EPA is working with Melbourne Water and industry in the area to manage the issue. Stormwater controls have stopped the discharge to the creek, and clean-up works are expected later today.” Stony Creek was heavily contaminated by chemical run-off from last year’s toxic Tottenham fire. I lived in Newport/Williamstown on Melbourne Road in a double-storey Victorian-era house until I was about 10 years old. Then we moved to Mornington Peninsula and I lived there until I was 21 when my mother split up with my father and I moved back to Newport and Altona North, but I would often go to my father’s house on the peninsula. Then in 2011, I moved to Altona. For six years, I lived near the beach and Kooringal golf course. I attended Williamstown North Primary School until grade 4. But it’s the beach at Williamstown and Altona that keeps me tied to the area … and the quality

What do you like about Altona North? I like the proximity to the CBD. You can get to and back from the Melbourne Riverslide Skatepark quite easily whether in a car or taxi or public transport. It is ideal for attending the big Melbourne competitions, and I enjoy the Williamstown beach and Altona beach – they are both easy access from Altona North. And I like going out to Ferguson Street and Nelson Place in Williamstown for the cafes and ice cream parlours on the waterfront. And, of course, the skateparks in the local area are quite good.

Bridge team’s strong win Mount St Joseph Girls’ College last week hosted the state final of the Aurecon Bridge Building Competition, with more than 150 finalists from independent and state schools travelling to Altona. The school’s team, The Three Bridgetteers, won first place for designing the strongest bridge in the engineering challenge for secondary schools across Australia and New Zealand. Team members Sarvleen Kaur, Tam Maryoe and Augustina Baw Baw designed a bridge that held 428 times its weight. “This year we were up against 42 other schools in Victoria,” Sarvleen said. “Augustina, Tam and I worked together to design a bridge using the provided materials,

which included balsa wood, string and glue. “After many practice runs, we designed a bridge which was made up of a lot of triangle trusses, which are very strong structures. “We named our construction the Royal Trust Bridge, which weighed less than 200 grams and held 85.6 kilograms.” The team’s efforts collected $500 prize money for the college. “We were very happy about our achievement, which was a great improvement from last year when our bridge only held 44 kilograms,” Sarvleen said. “We are very inspired by this competition to follow a career in engineering.” Goya Dmytryshchak

Ushering in new leaders The program manager of Australia’s leading queer arts and cultural festival has landed a coveted role as Footscray Community Arts Centre’s new artistic director. Daniel Santangeli, Midsumma Festival’s head programmer for the past three years, will take the FCAC baton from former director Martin Paten, who finished up this month after two years in the role. Robyn Gawenda, who joined FCAC as general manager in 2018, has been appointed the centre’s executive director. The executive director is responsible for the centre’s overall strategy and operations, leaving the artistic director to develop the artistic direction of FCAC’s program. Mr Santangeli is a former Next Wave program co-ordinator and has a background in independent theatre.

“I am thrilled to be working with Robyn to build on FCAC’s vibrant 40-year history, and to lead one of Australia’s most significant contemporary and community-engaged arts centre’s into the future,” he said. Ms Gawenda takes on her role after stints in government and the independent arts sector. “FCAC plays a pivotal role in ensuring that communities of the west have access to lead, create and experience extraordinary contemporary arts experiences,” she said. “I look forward to working alongside Daniel and the community to build on this incredible legacy.” FCAC chair Jason Rostant said the new leadership team is well placed to lead the centre into its next phase. When hunting for a new home, would-be apartment buyers often begin by thinking about what they can afford, or perhaps what size they want their place to be. But the starting point should really be something a little more fundamental, according to Miriam Sandkuhler, buyer’s agent and founder of the firm Property Mavens. First and foremost, Sandkuhler says, buyers need to reflect on their own lifestyle. “Definitely lifestyle first, followed by budget, which will then dictate possibly the apartment size, as well as the location. You have to consider lifestyle first because that drives the location where you want to be,” she says. Even once you’ve settled on a region or location, understanding what your preferences are will help narrow down the search further. Individuals who prioritise health and fitness will want to make sure they buy close to parks and gardens where they can walk and run, or that there’s a gymnasium nearby. If nights out on the town are important to you, check whether the places you’re considering are an easy distance to bars, restaurants and clubs. And while downtime is important, proximity to work is an important consideration, too. Getting to a workplace easily and without an overly long commute is a top concern on many purchasers’ lists. Sandkuhler says with so many things to bear in mind while apartment hunting, it’s common for buyers to overlook things. For example, more mundane lifestyle factors, such as access to medical services, community facilities and proximity to family and friends, are sometimes forgotten.

A key tip Sandkuhler shares with clients is to think ahead: how long do they plan to live in the residence, and could their life circumstances change during that period? “It depends on the stage in their life that they’re at,” she says. “Are you buying it as a single with a view to becoming a couple, or are you a couple that’s going to become

SPORT CY’s put together the perfect season to gain promotion

It is the perfect number combination in amateur football – 20-0. Williamstown CYMS achieved the rare feat in the Victorian Amateur Football Association Premier C, going through the season undefeated. The CYs overcame one of their toughest tests of the year in the grand final, beating a stubborn Ajax by 18 points at the Trevor Barker Oval on Saturday. CYs coach Mathew Montebello was still letting it sink in that his side had won all 20 games en route to the promotion and premiership double. “It’s really surreal,” he said. “Someone said to me part way through the year, you probably need to lose one, it’s good for you, but you never coach thinking you’ve got to drop one soon, but you just don’t expect it to happen that you go through a season undefeated. “The boys are in really good spirits because

they put a lot of pressure on themselves to do it, they had high expectations and wanted to get the job done.” Williamstown CYMS had redemption on the mind from day one of pre-season. The CYs could not exactly sweep what happened in last year’s finals under the carpet when they lost a semi-final by three points and a preliminary final by a point, which cost the minor premiers their shot at promotion. “The boys took a lot from last year,” Montebello said. “We didn’t talk about it too much, but we always knew last year’s disappointment was driving us. “The pressure in the first final to get through the promotion, it was like ‘phew, we got through the stumbling block from last year’. “Then there’s still the added pressure of you’re 19-0 now and how do you make sure you finish it off properly. “I’m really proud of the boys.”

With the grand final close, Williamstown CYMS was looking for a match-winner in the dying minutes. The CYs needed to look no further than co-captain Tommy Johnstone, who produced two game-saving acts for his side. The first was a big smother that halted an Ajax forward thrust and the second was a spectacular goal bursting through a pack. “We always talk about captain’s leadership and what a moment that was for him,” Montebello said. “He was inspirational.” Williamstown CYMS ruckman Dylan Jones was the most influential player on the ground. The CYs are heading to Premier B – the second tier of amateur football in the state – and Montebello is excited by what lies ahead. Seagulls rue missed chances By Lance Jenkinson You could hear a pin drop in the Williamstown rooms. The sound of silence was 22 heartbroken players and a support team that had no words to make the situation better. One by one, the Seagulls players eventually broke away from their flock, some heading for the showers, some searching for a consoling hug from a loved one and some just remaining in the same position shell-shocked and slowly sipping into the can of beer in their hands. You work for 11 months to get into a position to win a grand final, so when you fall short so narrowly, as the Seagulls did in a three-point loss to Richmond in the Victorian Football League decider at Ikon Park on Sunday, you have nothing to prepare your emotions for that. Williamstown general manager of football Stephen Soulsby said the healing process will begin this week. “We’ve got our presentation night on Thursday night and it’s a chance to reflect on this season,” he said. “We do have to process this and get on with it.” The Williamstown community will need to wrap its arms around midfielder Willie Wheeler this week. Wheeler was inconsolable after the final siren. The midfield star had late chances to put the Seagulls in front, only to be denied by the right goal post in front of the Legends Stand. Two of Wheeler’s set shots, one from about 40 metres out and the other from slightly further, both hit the post. The first one came the closest, hitting the inside of the right goal post, while the second one grazed the outside of the same goal post. Seconds later, the siren sounded and bodies of Williamstown players were left strewn across the surface as Richmond players celebrated around them. “He’s going to obviously hurt for a while,” Soulsby said of Wheeler. “Willie will bounce back. “We’ll all get across Willie.” This was not on Wheeler. This loss had as much to do about the missed chances in the previous 118 minutes as it was in the last two minutes. “You’ve got to take your moments in a grand final,” Soulsby said. “Unfortunately, we couldn’t take a couple of those today and Richmond did.” Where the game was lost for Williamstown was its insipid first quarter. The Seagulls were late arriving to the party, trailing by 31 points before finally hitting the

scoreboard. The ABC radio commentators were joking that a mercy rule might need to be applied at quarter-time when the inside 50 count was 24-2 in favour of Richmond. What they did not count on was the fight of Williamstown. It is in the Seagulls DNA to fight when their backs are against the wall and fight they did. Slowly but surely the Gulls got back into the contest. A goal from a 50-metre penalty to Leigh Masters was the spark and the goal of the day from Billy Myers had seen Williamstown get back to within 18 points at half-time. The third quarter had even more promising

signs for Williamstown with a Nick Rodda goal from a 50-metre penalty getting his side as close as nine points. A late goal from Riley Collier-Dawkins on the run breathed life back into Richmond, who led by 14 at three-quarter time. The last quarter was epic VFL grand final football. It was punch and counter-punch throughout. Wheeler lifted Williamstown with the opening goal of the quarter and that was backed up by a snap goal to Josh Pickess to cut the deficit back to just one. Jacob Townsend and Collier-Dawkins both kicked goals on the run for Richmond and suddenly the margin was back out to 13.

The Richmond cheer squad was back in a celebratory mood, but when Joel Ottavi pegged one back for Williamstown, they were back to biting their fingernails. Oleg Markov replied quickly for Richmond and some were thinking it could be the back breaker for the Seagulls. Williamstown had other thoughts and dominated the final 14 minutes of the match, but were wasteful with their chances. Jack Dorgan’s snap shot at goal missed and Liam Hunt’s long range shot was rushed through. Ben Kennedy goaled for Williamstown on the snap about 28 minutes in and the Seagulls faithful were starting to believe. Two Wheeler posters later and the siren sounded. “It was a credit to the boys to fight back after quarter-time,” Soulsby said. “For us, it just shows what those boys are about, they’re very proud of their performance.” The pain of grand final defeat will linger for the Williamstown players, but the supporters were reflecting on the season as a whole when they gave the players a standing ovation on their way back to the rooms. “They’ve had a really great year, but unfortunately we couldn’t top it off today,” Soulsby said.

Vikings let one slip By Lance Jenkinson A day that started full of optimism turned into a horror show for Altona. The script could not have been more gut-wrenching for the Vikings in a three-point loss to Deer Park in the Western Region Football League division 1 grand final at Avalon Airport Oval on Saturday. Vikings midfielder Steven Kennedy was still shell-shocked long after the final siren sounded on the premiership that got away. “You won’t lose in too many worse ways I don’t think,” he said. “It’s still pretty raw really, a bit of a numb feeling. “That will be one to look back on and rue.” Considering it was Altona’s first grand final since 2012, there were no signs of any early nerves. The Vikings were clearly the dominant side in the first half, dictating the play with their quick ball movement and playing with a physicality befitting of a grand final. At half-time, Altona led by 25 points, the vast majority of its players winning their one-on-one duels and the team seemingly in a commanding position. Even the Vikings fans were getting chirpy to the Deer Park players in their vicinity, sensing their great run of premierships could be coming to an end.

Then came a tough third quarter for Altona. It was one of the most edgy quarters of football seen in the WRFL for a long time. It started with Deer Park defender Jackson Barling running off the back square and taking aim at any Altona player in his zone. Barling felled Kennedy behind the play and that act, like it or not, signalled a change in momentum in the match. Soon after, Daniel Cooper saw a yellow card for a swinging arm and then Chris Stewart was issued one and joined him in the Deer Park sin bin for a brain fade act. While it led to a numerical disadvantage, playing 16 on 18, Deer Park coach Marc Bullen knew his side was cooked if it did not try something different in the third quarter and the injection of an “’80s style” rough and tumble into the game proved successful. It got the intimidation factor back for the Lions and had Altona players second guessing. Kennedy admitted his side went away from what made it play well in the first two quarters. He put it down to the physicality of Deer Park and the fatigue and physical toll on his team that eventually saw them worn down. “Players sort of didn’t take the risks we would normally do [in the second half],” Kennedy said. “We’re a side that likes to move the ball at angles and cut through the middle of the

ground by handball and foot and we just stopped taking it on. “In the third quarter, we had two extra on the ground because they had two sent off and they kicked two or three goals in that period, so it just shows how much we tightened up. “I still can’t believe we actually lost from that position, but it is what it is at the moment.” Leading by 19 points at three-quarter time and kicking with the aid of the wind in the fourth quarter, the odds were still stacked in favour of Altona. It did not take long for Deer Park to stamp its authority on the last quarter though with Spiros Amarantidis goaling inside the first minute and further goals to best-on-ground Jeremy Mills and Amarantidis getting the Lions on level terms. The Vikings were the minor premiers for a second year running, premiers in the reserves and minor premiers in the under 18s. “We’re doing something right as a club, but we just haven’t got that ultimate glory in the seniors, which hopefully isn’t too far away. “We’ll come back next year bigger and better and this is not going to stop us from trying.” It was Deer Park’s seventh premiership in a row, a Victorian metropolitan record. With 11 senior premierships, the Lions are fourth on the all-time premiers list behind Spotswood (15), Parkside (14) and Braybrook (12).

Western Bulldogs could not repeat their heroics of two weeks earlier in Saturday’s Victorian Football League women’s grand final. The Bulldogs caused a big upset when they beat minor premiers Collingwood in the semi-finals to be the first team through to the decider, but the Magpies exacted their revenge on the big stage, running out convincing winners by 37 points at Ikon Park on Sunday. In her post-game speech, Bulldogs captain and forward Mickayla Ward conceded the Magpies were the best team over the course of the season. “Firstly, I’d like to obviously congratulate the Collingwood footy club,” Ward said. “You’ve been the benchmark all year and we didn’t just come here today to fill a spot, we came here to work hard, but [you were] too good today, so congratulations to you guys.” Western Bulldogs endured a slow start, trailing by 17 points at quarter-time. It was former Bulldog Jaimee Lambert who did the damage with the opening two goals of the game. It looked as though the first term was merely a hiccup for the Bulldogs, who were the dominant side in the second quarter. The Bulldogs got back into the game courtesy of goals to Sophie Molan and Emma Mackay. The Sean Kavanagh-coached Bulldogs were getting plenty of drive from the likes of Bailey Hunt, Ellie Gavalas, who had 19 disposals each, and Kirsty Lamb, with 15. Unfortunately for the Western Bulldogs, they could not maintain the rage and were out-classed in the second half. Bulldogs lose their bite in grand finals Memories of an incredible 2019 season will live on for the Footscray Hockey Club. Recollections of grand final day not so much though. Footscray was left licking their wounds twice on the biggest day on the Hockey Victoria calendar. The Bulldogs tasted grand final defeat in both the women’s and men’s grand finals back to back on a tough Saturday evening at the State Netball and Hockey Centre. In the women’s premier league grand final, Footscray was beaten 4-0 by Hawthorn in a game that was considered a toss of the coin going in. Only one competition point separated the two sides after 19 weeks of the regular season.

The Bulldogs could not find an avenue to goal, nor could their defence hold up for long enough. In the men’s premier league grand final, Footscray went in as a clear underdog against Southern United, the superior team in the regular season. The Bulldogs were out-gunned 5-0 in the big dance. Just like the women’s team, the men could not find a way to goal and their defence cracked under the weight of Southern pressure. Irrespective of the grand final results, this will be remembered as a hugely successful season for Footscray’s men’s and women’s programs.
