Cherry hosts a new flavour It will be a Father’s Day extravaganza to Finnish them all. People will be able to get a taste of Finland at next month’s Cherry Lake Market in Altona. The Lions Club of Altona runs the fundraising market on the first Sunday of every month. However, the market falling on Father’s Day – Sunday, September 1 – will have a distinctively different flavour. The Lions have partnered with the Finnish Society of Melbourne for a celebration of all things Finnish. Market-goers will be able to experience Finnish food and culture while browsing all the usual stalls of trash and treasure, toys, clothes and homegrown and homemade goods. There will also be specialty Finnish stalls with pulla sweet bread, salmiakki salty licorice, Nordic berries, gingerbread, kransky sausages, coffee and chocolates. The Spirit of Finland choir and Tanhu Finnish folk dancers will perform, and there will be Finland tourist information for those thinking of visiting. One lucky person will win a 90-minute sauna session for themselves and seven friends at the Finnish society’s sauna. Pockets of Altona, Laverton, Altona North, South Kingsville and Williamstown have been earmarked for “substantial change” under three new residential development zones in Hobsons Bay. The zones approved by the council are: • Residential growth zone allowing at least four storeys. • General residential zone with a three-storey height limit. • Neighbourhood residential zone limited to two storeys.

The residential growth zone includes areas around Altona, Laverton, Westona, Aircraft and North Williamstown train stations, pockets along Millers and Blackshaws roads at Altona North and Sutton Street, South Kingsville. Part of Newport, around the train station, has been excluded from the new zones because a heritage study is “well progressed”. Williamstown has been mostly designated a neighbourhood zone, with “limited change”. Cr Colleen Gates told last week’s council meeting that protecting heritage was “really critical”.

“The streetscape you see in Laverton compared to, say, Newport compared to Altona, are significantly different and create very important character that people appreciate when they’re moving from one part of the municipality to the other,” she said. Cr Gates said the state government in 2014 had put a blanket three-storey zoning across the whole municipality. “What we’re proposing here is to reduce that back to 21 per cent and then scale back to a neighbourhood residential zone with a two-storey height limit to 77 per cent of the residentially zoned land,” she said.

“The gap, or what’s left over, is the residential growth zone and that’s been applied to two per cent across the municipality and focused on areas with walking or easy access to transport.” The council had received 57 submissions on the new zones, mainly concerned about over-development in Altona and Newport and, conversely, limitations to development that could adversely impact property values. The planning scheme amendment is expected to take 12 to 18 months to be implemented, with community members to receive another opportunity to lodge an objection or submission when it is formally exhibited.

No joy for Hansen Street By Goya Dmytryshchak Residents on the eastern side of Hansen Street in Altona North have lost their fight to become part of Newport. Hobsons Bay council has rejected a petition signed by 64 people which called for the boundary between Altona North and Newport to be restored to the middle of Hansen Street as it was prior to 1999. Lead petitioner Carla Bridge said the council had failed to explain why the houses on the eastern side of Hansen Street were transferred from Newport to Altona North in 1999. “They haven’t addressed at all why the boundary was changed in the first place,” she said. “They’ve never told us what the exceptional circumstance was for them to tweak it in such a bizarre way back in 1999. “They’ve also said they consulted with the community but they haven’t given any examples of how they consulted … there are many elderly residents in the street who have no memory of being consulted and some of them weren’t even aware that the changes had taken place.” The petition had called for Newport’s western boundary to be brought back to the middle of Hansen Street bringing it into line with Newport’s historical location, Australian Bureau of Statistics maps, Hobsons Bay’s waste collection routes, and Hobsons Bay’s new residential zones and neighbourhood character precincts. Residents also raised issues about a reduction in house value, increase in insurance premiums for homes and cars, problems with mail delivery and GPS, and residents having mixed identification and property documents. Hobsons Bay council meeting stated there were a number of changes to boundaries “driven by the state government” following the amalgamation of the former cities of Altona and Williamstown into Hobsons Bay in 1994. “Some suburb boundaries changed, including the eastern boundary for Altona, which previously followed New Street, Hansen Street and Blenheim Road.

“The ABS reviewed their boundaries in 1995 to align most of them with the new local government boundaries. Some of these boundaries, including Newport and Altona North are not in alignment through the centre of the road in Hobsons Bay.” The officer’s report stated that in 1997 consultation was undertaken with the community.

Council backs ferry operator Hobsons Bay council has met with Parks Victoria to throw its support behind a Williamstown ferry operator who lost his Southgate berth after 13 years. Williamstown Bay and River Cruises owner Mark Davy said losing the berth was “diabolical” for his business, which started ferry services to Williamstown in 1984 and has the only wheelchairaccessible boat to Williamstown. Hobsons Bay mayor Jonathon Marsden told last week’s council meeting that he and chief executive Aaron van Egmond had met Parks Victoria chief executive Matthew Jackson and executive director for Melbourne Kylie Trott. “We just needed to know what place a regularly-scheduled ferry service running on a daily basis from Williamstown, what role that could play in the Southbank precinct and how we could secure a berth for that vessel,” Cr Marsden said. “We got as far as securing their agreement to make a representation to the city of Melbourne, who manage the land-side of the Southbank, in order to provide the operator with a ‘home’ so to speak, although not a permanent berth.” Cr Peter Hemphill asked the council to write to Parks Victoria pointing out that there was only one ferry with wheelchair access. “I think we just need to keep supporting those that have supported us and our tourism strategy for more than 20 years.” Goya Dmytryshchak

New plan for park goes into play By Benjamin Millar A compromise for a revamped Footscray Park multi-use sports field has been floated in a last-ditch bid to find common ground in the divisive debate over the park’s future. More than 1500 written submissions have been lodged with Maribyrnong council in relation to Melbourne Victory’s soccer academy proposal, with 53 per cent in support. Petitions for and against the plan have also been circulating, along with claims and counter-claims of misinformation.

Footscray resident Ken Betts initially supported the project and still believes it has merit, but he said the groundswell of opposition has forced him to retract his backing for the sake of community harmony. “My change of heart is solely based on not wanting to be part of a divided community that I love so much,” he said. Footscray resident Chay Granger wrote an open letter to Melbourne Victory supporters and the Footscray community. He outlined pros and cons of the current plans before flagging an alternative proposal he

believes would benefit the whole community. Mr Granger said positive aspects of the current plan include re-turfing the sports field, $10 million funding from the state government and potential synergies between Melbourne Victory women’s team and community clubs, and the increased use of the space making the park safer and more family friendly. For Mr Granger the negative aspects of the current plan include the impact on current users, a lack of parking and pedestrian access, and a lack of integration with any other sports such as AFL, cricket or little athletics.

“The draft design is extremely inefficient in allocation of scarce public resources,” he said. Mr Granger has floated two alternative designs for the sports field area that include a training field and community club changerooms but drop the show pitch and grandstand. Melbourne Victory chief executive Trent Jacobs said the club was committed to existing plans at the Footscray Park location but would await the outcome of the consultation process and council decision. Councillors will vote on the plan on August 27.

Williamstown’s place as the birthplace of the Australian Navy is being honoured with a permanent model ship exhibition opening this Sunday. Naval historian Geoff Dougall said 14 navy ship models had been donated to Seaworks Maritime Museum by another local, Paul Webb. Many of the actual ships were built at the Williamstown dockyard (now BAE Systems) next door, which had been one of the Commonwealth’s most important naval shipbuilding facilities. Mr Dougall said all 14 ships on display were by Max Montague, regarded as a master model builder. “He built two Sydney II models – one is on display here, the other is in a private museum,” Mr Dougall said. “Max has built many ship models, many of them now in museums and institutions all over Australia.

Footscray fire

About 30 firefighters took almost an hour to gain control of a fire at a Footscray chemist on Monday morning. The fire broke out in the Droop Street site about 1.30am before being declared under control about 2.20am. Investigations into the fire are continuing.

Females in focus An exhibition opening in Footscray next month will celebrate the work of women photographers in a bid to break from the traditional male gaze. Footscray Community Arts Centre will host Her Focus, an exhibition that aims to address gender inequity in the photography industry. Curator Jessica Ibacache said artists in the exhibition used photography as a vehicle to share stories on issues including race, ethnicity, feminism, disabilities, gender and sexuality. “I just wanted to show the amazing work women are doing in the industry,” she said. “It comes from my own experience as a photographer and how I have experienced the industry – things like going into photography shops and being talked down to.”

Feature artists will include Chelsea Michelle, Megan Hunter and Esther Tuddenham from FCAC’s ArtLife program for people with disability. Established photographers Jody Haines and Pia Johnson will also take part, alongside Leah Jing, Jasmin Acuña Pakoti, Victoria Acuña Pakoti and Rachel Suarez. Johnson said she was excited about participating. “Her Focus is an exhibition that asserts the varied and nuanced perspectives of emerging Australian female photographers,” she said. Her Focus will open at Footscray Community Arts Centre from 6-8pm on Friday, September 6, running until September 28.

Hand amputation leads to fine By Goya Dmytryshchak

A Brooklyn meat processing company has been convicted and fined $90,000 after a worker’s hand was amputated. JBS Australia pleaded guilty in the Melbourne Magistrates Court to failing, so far as is reasonably practicable, to provide a safe working environment that was without risk to health. The court heard the injured man had been working on a production line to remove hides from sheep carcasses that had been missed by a machine known as the primary hide puller.

The Westside Derby Dollz are really on a roll. Training out of RecWest at West Footscray and rolling since 2012, the Dollz are the only mixed gender roller derby league in the west of Melbourne. Club president Jessie-Rose Hunt (alias ‘Massica Jones’) said the club is coming off an amazing run of success, winning every match in the year-long Statewide Stampede tournament. The club continued its winning ways by finishing ahead of about 30 other teams to take out its division in the Great Southern Slam, the largest roller derby tournament in the southern hemisphere. Hunt said she had never been interested in team sports until joining the Dollz about three years ago. “It is really the community that has kept me going,” she said. The court heard that here were hectic scenes as workers attached chains or straps to a back-up hide puller, while leaving the machine running. A chain that the injured worker had wrapped around his wrist got caught in the back-up hide puller. He was dragged into the machinery and his left wrist and hand were amputated. According to the man, workers had been following common practice when the production line was busy. JBS Australia has since decommissioned the back-up hide puller and bought new machinery. WorkSafe health and safety executive director Julie Nielsen said there was no excuse for allowing workers to take unnecessary risks by using unsafe machinery or not powering down machinery when necessary. “This worker suffered an horrific, life-changing injury while operating hazardous machinery because a safe system of work was not in place,” she said.

Depot steps up recycling By Goya Dmytryshchak Hobsons Bay residents can now drop off recyclables every Saturday at the council’s Altona depot. Residents are being urged to bring their household glass, paper and plastic waste to be recycled instead of going to landfill, as the crisis gripping the kerbside collection system deepens following the collapse of SKM Recycling. Material collected at the council’s operations centre is sent to Truganina recycling company Australian Paper Recovery for sorting.

Australian Paper Recovery managing director Darren Thorpe said separating glass from other recyclables was the greatest priority. “The biggest contaminant in recycling is the glass,” he said. “The company sorts the material into seven streams and then supplies it to other businesses to be converted into new products. “Everything will stay here and we won’t have the need to send the material offshore.” Last week’s council meeting heard the first drop-off session on August 10 resulted in about 200 carloads or 1.3 tonnes of recyclables received, which was considered a success given the inclement weather. Hobsons Bay mayor Jonathon Marsden said the council was also working on other ideas, including a local container deposit scheme. “This is scheduled to happen next year,” he said.

“The problems facing our waste and recycling sector are complex and will require action by the federal, state and local governments.” The state government last week announced $11.3 million for 33 councils that had contracts with SKM, with $6.6 million of that to be provided over the next four months.

Experts warn about pollution New childcare centres being built on busy Maribyrnong roads are putting children’s health at risk, according to public health academics. Clare Walter, an honorary research fellow at the University of Melbourne school of biomedical sciences, said building childcare centres on busy truck routes exposes children to a higher risk of developing asthma and allergies. “Traffic emissions are bad for our health and children in particular are vulnerable and don’t have the ability to protect themselves,” she said. The warning comes as three childcare centres are being built on three of Melbourne’s busiest truck routes – Geelong Road in West Footscray, Somerville Road in Kingsville and at the intersection of Williamstown Road and Francis Street in Yarraville. Ms Walter said children are vulnerable to traffic pollution because their lungs are still developing and they often spend more time outside than adults. Climate call to council A community group is calling on Hobsons Bay council to declare a climate emergency that requires urgent action, including increasing the neighbourhood tree canopy. A petition started by the group, Transition Hobsons Bay, has been submitted to the council with 630 signatures. Transition Hobsons Bay member and Altona North resident Rowena Joske said her suburb scored nine out of 10 on a heat vulnerability index by the Western Alliance for Greenhouse Action. “My neighbourhood in Altona North is vulnerable to hotter temperatures from climate change,” she said. “On summer days, the heat and lack of shade can already make it dangerous for my kids to ride their bikes from school.”

Resilient Melbourne and The Nature Conservancy last month launched a report titled, Living Melbourne: our metropolitan urban forest. It cites Hobsons Bay as being among those councils with the lowest levels of tree canopy cover. The council has requested an officer’s report responding to the petition. Mayor Jonathon Marsden said the council was committed to tackling climate change to the extent it could at a local level. “[That] is why we have set ourselves the goal of achieving zero net emissions by 2020 for our organisation and 2030 for the community,” he said.

Busker back on track By Benjamin Millar When Dean Jackson starts performing, the other challenges in his life briefly fade away. As a single parent of four children, the youngest with Down syndrome, the Maidstone dad has made busking one way of helping to make ends meet. It’s the time he feels most alive. “When I was about 11, I got a crappy old acoustic guitar and learnt a few chords,” he said. Mr Jackson began writing his own songs and later joined a band, but becoming a parent and other changes in his life circumstances forced music to the backburner. He recently returned to performing via busking and quickly became a familiar face on the footbridge at Footscray railway station. “Everyone seemed cool about it, people seemed to enjoy it – I was feeling part of the community again,” he said. “I was probably the happiest I had been in my whole life.” But a complaint to station authorities earlier this year prompted Metro Trains to give Mr Jackson his marching orders. “That was a bit upsetting,” he said. “I think it’s sad that someone would take something like that away from someone else.” A Metro Trains spokesman said nobody is permitted to play a musical instrument on rail premises without written authorisation. “It is illegal to solicit money on Metro property without permission,” he said. “Footscray station staff reserve the right to ask anyone who busks on the footbridge without permission to leave the premises.” When Footscray resident Julian Welgus-Dillon heard of Mr Jackson’s ban, he decided to act. As someone who had enjoyed hearing the busker’s music, he wanted to help.

The RMIT music industry student reached out to some contacts and was soon helping Mr Jackson record a six-track EP at the RMIT studios. “He’s just such a really friendly guy and I thought I could help him out – he was

Redevelopment of the former Kinnears Ropeworks factory in Footscray has hit a construction milestone with the topping out of a 15-storey apartment block. Work on the multi-level Live City development began in December, 2017. Construction and fit-out of the project, featuring 208 apartments, ground-floor retail and a rooftop garden, is expected to be completed by Christmas. The first tree was recently planted on the rooftop to celebrate the project topping out. R&F Property Australia vice-president Thomas Chiu said the milestone was an important step in the overall redevelopment. “We are delighted to see our vision for the Kinnears site starting to come to life,” he said. Railway veteran still on track By Goya Dmytryshchak Altona’s Frank Stoneman, who is celebrating 60 years working on Victoria’s railways, vividly recalls escorting royal passengers and other highlights of his career. The V/Line Southern Cross station booking clerk started his career as a station assistant in Geelong before moving to Melbourne to become a conductor. He is among the few to have travelled on all of Victoria’s railway lines during a statewide tour with the first Victorian Railways chairman, Bill Gibbs, in the 1970s.

“I was lucky enough to be one of the conductors used for special trains and after working on a train for the chairman, [his wife] Mrs Gibbs said, ‘I want that young man to come with us’,” Mr Stoneman said. He was chosen to work on royal trains that transported Queen Elizabeth to Geelong, Prince Charles and Princess Diana to Ballarat and Princess Margaret to Moe. “I met Princess Margaret,” Mr Stoneman said. “She was quite pleasant; a small little person. “They were special trains we used … there would be no passengers.” He has worked on trains that were more than 20 carriages long and the former Train of Knowledge – a camp on rails so school children could experience regional Victoria. Mr Stoneman, 77, said he had no plans to retire. “I still like coming to work.” Frank Stoneman is celebrating 60 years of service for the Victorian railways. (Supplied)

MY PLACE Seddon theatre maker Belinda Campbell has grown up with the stage well and truly in her blood. She speaks with Benjamin Millar. What’s your connection with Seddon? I’ve lived westside for about five years now. I first came over here to attend some acting classes and loved it. Then I moved over, eventually settling in to my Seddon place. I love it here, but I’m not sure how much longer I’ll be able to afford it. What do you like most about the area? It’s so close to everything! Seddon shops, three train stations, Footscray goodness, the river, the city. And the people are great! There are tons of cute dogs and cats. And kids.

How did you become involved in theatre-making? Growing up, my parents were heavily involved in the local theatre groups. I would jump at any chance to get amongst it, be it on stage, program selling or framing lighting gels – really anything they would let me at. I loved it! My mother taught after school drama and I joined as soon as I was allowed to officially at eight years old, though I’d been attending with

What are your favourite local places? Seddon Deadly Sins. Can’t go past them for superior service, laughs and delicious-everytime food. They’re my fave. I’m also a huge fan of African Taste (try the fufu), and McManos Chicken Bar (shout out to the awesome owner David). her basically since birth. What has been the most rewarding aspect? Being able to do the thing I love most and am best at: make theatre. Be it acting, writing, directing or inspiring young artists, I just love what I do! What can you tell us about Wit Incorporated? We’re an artist-led, professional theatre

Our shows have ranged from Shakespeare and Sherlock Holmes to cabaret and kids’ shows. What might people be surprised to learn about you? I have four ukuleles. I watch cartoons. I love tiny chairs. When I see one, I have an urge to sit

in it. One day I hope to own my very own tiny chair. Or maybe a collection of sizes so I can pretend I’m Goldilocks. CONSIDER THE SAUCE It’s all about the chicken for Kenny Weir The men of Consider The Sauce are hungry. There’ll be no mucking about tonight. Specifically, there’ll be no trucking with the half measures of ordering half a chicken. So we order a whole one ($34). This a Korean first for us, ordering a whole one that is. It’s ambitious, too, as we know that when Korean eateries say “whole chicken”, they invariably mean a whole lot of pieces that appear to amount to significantly more than a whole bird. But just because we order the big deal, doesn’t mean we’re wanting – or are able – to eat it all. We don’t. So four pieces go home and will constitute, the next day, probably the best school lunch Bennie will ever have. The cool thing about this chicken – we get half sweet chilli, half soy/garlic – is that despite being quite wet with the sauces, all the pieces retain wonderful crunch. Did someone say Korean fried chicken is better than hipster joint fried chicken? Yes. We did. Incredibly, despite the poultry excellence, our fried chicken is marginally upstaged in the flavour department by our other dinner selection. From the chargrilled barbecue list we get spicy pork bulgogi ($22). The thin-sliced meat is of heavenly taste. It sits on crunchy cabbage and there’s enough

We eat it, in the style of san choi bao, encased in the accompanying cos lettuce leaves. The redeveloped Manor Lakes Central Shopping Centre will become a hub for the local community featuring the latest concept Kmart, Coles, Best & Less, a large fruit and vegetable store, a continental deli and an additional 38 specialty stores.

Visit fires up big smiles A surprise visit to a Yarraville learning hub for people with disability has fired up the imagination of participants. Peter Karlovic, practice leader at annecto David House Learning Hub, said the Metropolitan Fire Brigade visit was about showcasing the brigade to create more awareness about the role it plays. “We had all of our David House participants included, and many had awesome photos with the firefighters and the equipment on display,” he said. “The firemen answered questions, displayed how the equipment worked, explained their role, mingled with our participants and shared stories.” The visit was inspired by a client with such

affinity with the MFB that he had been known to set off the fire alarm just so it could attend. Mr Karlovic said the brigade’s visit was very enjoyed by David House participants. “The firefighters were extremely approachable during the visit,” he said. “They [clients] all loved the visit and have continued to talk about it well after the engine departed.” The annecto David House Learning Hub offers activities and courses to assist people with disability get involved in their communities and to increase learning and independence. Courses range from using iPads and general computer skills to gardening, exercise, health and wellbeing for adults.

This variety of retailers, range of dining options and designated community areas provide plenty of ways to shop, dine and play. Alfresco dining spaces will link indoor and outdoor shopping areas and connect to landscaped gardens and interactive play areas for children, complete with bike tracks and mini climbing walls.

Access to the shopping centre will be made easy with 500 new parking spaces to be constructed, taking total parking capacity at the centre to more than 900 cars. Manor Lakes Central is situated on Ballan Road at Manor Lakes, just 10 minutes from Werribee and located in the second fastest growth area in Victoria. JAM DONUTS Ingredients For the dough 400g bread flour or high protein flour 260ml milk 70g sugar 7g sachet of yeast ½ tsp salt 50g softened butter 1 tbsp extra flour Other Spray oil 250g raspberry jam 1 piping bag 250g caster sugar

Method Place all dough ingredients except the extra flour into a mixing bowl and mix on a medium speed for 5 minutes, spray the inside of a medium bowl and put the dough inside. Place in a NEFF oven on the proving function on level 1 for 45 minutes. Once the dough has doubled in size, remove from the oven and place on a lightly floured surface. Knock the air out and roll until the dough is 2cm thick (coat fingers with oil to prevent stickiness). Using a medium-large cookie cutter, cut into rounds and place on a tray lined with baking paper. Place back into the oven and prove for a further 30 minutes before moving across to CircoTherm® at 200°C with a high level of steam. Bake for 20 minutes then set aside to cool. Heat the jam a little and put into the piping bag and inject into the cooled donuts. Spray with oil and coat in the caster sugar.

House prices steady as indicators show slump may be over The biggest downturn in Melbourne property prices since the 1980s looks to be at an end. Melbourne’s median house price rose by 0.3 per cent in the June quarter, the first rise since December 2017. The median house price is now $818,200, which is 10 per cent below the peak reached in late 2017. Melbourne’s median unit price increased by 2 per cent in the June quarter. The median unit price is now $501,000, which is 2 per cent below the 2018 peak. House and unit prices are 49 per cent and 20 per cent higher than they were in 2013. Melbourne’s most expensive areas have seen the biggest house price falls. Houses in Melbourne’s inner-east and inner-south regions have fallen 16 per cent and 13 per cent respectively over the past year, whereas house prices were unchanged in Melbourne’s west and north-west regions. However, there are signs that prices in expensive areas are rebounding fastest. Notably, auction clearance rates in Melbourne’s most expensive regions in recent weeks are the strongest of all city regions. Melbourne’s more expensive regions tend to lead the overall market, so this is another sign that the Melbourne market may be nearing the bottom. Other indicators also point to a turnaround. More buyers are attending open for inspections, sentiment has improved and auction clearance rates are at the highest point since November 2017. SPORT Altona City’s rising ambitions to score some new faces

Change is about to sweep through Altona City like it has not done for a long time. Coach Andy O’Dell and football director Sam Borg will step down from their positions at the end of the Football Victoria men’s state league 1 season after four years in charge. The pair will leave City in a better position than they found it, but the time has come for fresh blood to take City to the next level. “There will be some departures at the end of the season,” Borg said. “Andy O’Dell will be one of them and that’s already been announced. “I will be stepping down from my role next year as well. For me it’s more about work commitments and allowing other people to come in and make a change.” Altona City has improved each year O’Dell has been coach. In 2016, City turned into a contender for promotion in state league 2, a feat it achieved a year later as champions in 2017. After moving up to state league 1 in 2018,

City has remained at the level for the past two seasons. It finished ninth last year and is currently in fourth place this year. Realistically, City cannot get promoted, but Borg reckons a top-four finish would satisfy the club’s powerbrokers. “Finishing in the top two is not a realistic possibility, but our motivation at the start of the season was to at least finish in the top four,” Borg said. City’s past month has been frustrating. On Saturday, its away clash with Banyule City was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch. The four games prior saw City cough up big leads at half-time. “The last four games we’ve been 2-0 up at half-time in every game and managed to only win one of those,” Borg said. “We’ve blown whatever opportunity we had for promotion.” Altona City will play Sydenham Park at Kim Reserve on Saturday evening. The game gives City a chance to shape the title race, with the

visiting Reds still in with a shot of winning the title. Elsewhere in men’s state league 1, Yarraville Glory enjoyed a 2-1 win over FC Clifton Hill on the road. Altona East Phoenix got a mid-week 3-2 win away to Mill Park less than a month after losing a game 10-1. The Phoenix could not maintain the rage on Saturday night, going down 6-3 to Hume United. In women’s state league 2, Maribyrnong Swifts Silvers lost 10-0 to top side Spring Hills. In women’s state league 3, Maidstone United crushed Rowville Eagles 6-0, with Jessica Stojcevski paving the way with a hat-trick. Altona Magic pipped Fitzroy City 2-1 after goals to captain Gabriella Panagiotou and Stephanie Pasceri, while Altona City lost 3-0 to Melbourne University. Seagulls tough it out By Lance Jenkinson Look up the word tough in a dictionary and it seems there’s every chance you’ll find the Williamstown Football Club logo. The Seagulls have marched nearly unblemished through the most gruelling months of the VFL season – and it all comes down to their mental toughness. The Andrew Collins-coached team has not lost a game since June 1, a span of almost two cold winter months. In that time, it has won eight and drawn one. They are the best no-excuses football team in the league. If Williamstown was ever going to drop a game based on being out of its comfort zone, last Sunday’s game would have been the one. The Seagulls home ground was waterlogged, causing disruption to their training schedule and forcing a tough game against Geelong to be relocated to Werribee. The players, coaches and staff from the Seagulls soldiered on, preparing as best as they could on the half ground kindly loaned by the Newport juniors. Brushing off the inconveniences, Williamstown arrived ready for a stern challenge from a Geelong side featuring upwards of 10 players who could walk into most AFL sides, including the likes of Sam Menagola, Rhys Stanley, Zac Smith, Scott Selwood and Charlie Constable. The Seagulls found a way – as they so often do. Their nine-point victory was full of guts and determination. Collins admitted his side was “a bit lucky” at times, with the statistics all favouring Geelong. But what did not register on the stats sheet was his team’s immense will to win. “As a coach, I was rapt with their performance,” he said. “Their effort was just tremendous. “There were a lot of numbers that favoured Geelong and they really came home strongly over us, but we just held on in the end.” The Seagulls produced one of their most even team performances of the season. Fifteen players had 10 or more disposals, with 20 notched up by both Billy Myers and Liam Hunt. Ten different players kicked a goal, with Nick Rodda the only multiple with two. “It was a real even performance,” Collins said. “No one had massive numbers.” Myers, on the wing, and Nick Sing, running off half-back, were the most effective. performance in the ruck, finishing with 33 hit-outs, 10 disposals, four tackles and a goal – all while playing on four different opponents. Not for the first time, Collins pondered aloud how Meese had never played a game of AFL football. “There were rucks coming at him from everywhere today,” Collins said. “He’s a terrific warrior. I’m sure that people watch him against AFL ruckmen and go: ‘Why didn’t you get a game of AFL footy?’

“He really is competitive and combative against them all.” Third-placed Williamstown will face finals contender Werribee in the last home-and-away round at Downer Oval on Saturday night. “It’s just a classic battle of the west,” Collins said. “Hopefully, it will be at our ground, with Saturday night expected to be really nice weather at this stage. “It would be a lovely way to finish the home-and-away season – with a big home crowd.”

Western Jets will enter the NAB League wildcard weekend looking shaky. The Jets had a dismal finish to the season, losing their final three home-and-away games. The Ryan O’Keefe-coached Jets had to settle for a seventh-placed finish because of their late-season form plunge. They will meet Greater Western Victoria Rebels in a wildcard game at Box Hill City Oval on Sunday for the right to feature in this year’s finals series. Western Jets will be keen to bounce back after a disappointing 32-point loss to Northern Knights at Avalon Airport Oval on Saturday morning. Inaccuracy cost the Jets dearly – they finished with 4.12 for the game. Archi Manton was the Jets’ only multiple goalkicker with three, while Aaron Clarke also kicked a major. Darcy Cassar and Lucas Rocci were the chief ball winners for the Jets. Cassar finished with a team-high 22 disposals, while Rocci had 20 disposals with five tackles. All will be forgiven for the slump in the last month if the Western Jets can find their spark and beat the Rebels in the wildcard game. Lance Jenkinson

City West Falcon is a high flier When City West Falcons goal defence Mel Oloamanu walks your way on a netball court, you know you are in for a hard game. Pity the opponent who faced the energetic Oloamanu in the Victorian Netball League 19-and-under grand final at the State Netball and Hockey Centre on Wednesday night. Oloamanu helped the Falcons to a 53-41 win over Peninsula Waves in the season decider, taking out the player of the match award in the process. “It felt like a dream, winning the game,” Oloamanu said. “When they called my name [for player of the match], I was in shock, I was speechless.” Oloamanu, 16, is one of the brightest young prospects in Australian netball. She represented Victoria at under-17 level for the first time this year. The Westside Saints-developed youngster starred for the Big V during her 15-and-under years, so the step up was a natural progression. The year 10 Melton Secondary College student was part of the Victorian team that took out fourth place at the under-17 nationals, but she will get the chance to atone next season.

The biggest accomplishment for Oloamanu came on the international stage as a co-captain of the Australian under-16 netball team. Pulling on the green and gold for the first time this year is something she will never forget. The former Hoppers Crossing junior cherished every moment, despite the sour ending – a one-goal loss to arch-rivals New Zealand in the final. “It was just an amazing experience to go out there and represent this country. “Even though we won silver, I reckon the memories are gold.” Oloamanu was initially uncertain about taking on the co-captaincy of Australia. “At first … I thought it would put pressure on me,” Oloamanu said. “With the help of my two co-captains, it just helped me a lot. We made sure we brought confidence to the team and everything was in place. It was just amazing.” Oloamanu, who idolises English netballer Gave Mentor, grabbed the chance to debut for City West Falcons in the top-flight VNL championship. Despite being half the age of some of the

opposition, Oloamanu performed strongly in limited time on court. “I was so nervous getting on to court, my knees were shaking,” Oloamanu said. “Once I was out there, I think I did perform well, but it was because of the help of the other girls on the court.” Oloamanu, a skilled defender with strong leadership qualities, has set a goal of earning a scholarship to the Australian Institute of Sport. With spots limited, she knows she will need to keep performing at state and national level to be considered. Oloamanu is the August nominee for the Don Deeble Rising Star award. The award, hosted by the Sunshine Western Region Sports Club and Star Weekly Weekly, recognises young athletes from the western suburbs who have achieved outstanding results at state and or national levels. Oloamanu will receive $1000 and other prizes, donated by the Yarraville Club Cricket Club, to assist her in achieving her sports goals. Lance Jenkinson

Spotswood crunch time By Lance Jenkinson Nothing will be handed to Spotswood on a silver platter in the final round of the Western Region Football League division 1. That is the message from Woodsmen coach Anthony Eames, who has implored his players to not look any further ahead than Saturday’s clash with Caroline Springs at McLean Reserve. The game will determine whether the Woodsmen keep hold of second spot and the double chance – or tumble out of the top three and into cut-throat finals territory. “If we don’t perform well this week, we’ll be in an elimination final,” Eames said. “I can’t see the sides around us dropping their games. “We just need to win to assure ourselves a double chance. We’re focused purely on this week.” Spotswood maintained second position with a runaway 119-point win over Point Cook away at Saltwater Reserve on Saturday. Leading by 32 points at half-time, the Woodsmen put their foot on the accelerator with an impressive 16-goal-to-three second half. While they had flat patches in the first half and are “still searching” for consistency, the second half showing was outstanding. “I thought our footy in the last quarter and a half was really positive,” Eames said. A great sign for Spotswood was the performance of roaming forward Dylan Callard, who finished with seven goals, the most he has kicked in a game this season, and providing an outlet higher up the ground. “Dylan’s ability to cover the ground is a strength that is probably under-rated,” Eames said. “His work rate, all the way up to half-back, was really strong. “He was clean with his disposal and very good on the lead. I thought it was his best game for the year.” Adam Cooney is showing ominous signs in the shadows of the finals. He kicked five goals and is relishing his time in the forward line and making the players around him better. “It’s exciting for the club and for the guys that are playing next to him to be playing with a Brownlow medallist,” Eames said. “He gives us some stability in that forward line and, particularly, with how it functions. “He’s been preparing well and he’s in good nick at the moment.” Gareth Newton impressed with four goals in his second game back from a broken finger. His ability to play a swingman role for the Woodsmen will be crucial in the finals. Sam Harvey, Toby Kopa and Baxter Norton were superb across the midfield.

The netball team secured the division 2 premiership on Friday night, the women’s football team will kick-start its finals campaign, against Caroline Springs, on Sunday at Avalon Airport Oval and the men’s football team is a premiership contender. “The vibe around the place has been really strong for a couple of years now,” Eames said. “We’ve got two netball teams and potentially three next year and it’s growing. “Women’s footy is flying at our footy club.

We’re going to be looking at having two women’s sides next year.” Altona ran rings around bottom side Albion in a 243-point penultimate round win. The Vikings kicked 42 goals, including nine to Patrick Rose and five each to Omar Abou-Zeid and Elliot Cavallarao. In division 2, Parkside got a 33-point victory over West Footscray. Yarraville Seddon beat Newport by 142 points, while North Footscray went down by 97 to Wyndhamvale. In division 3, Braybrook and Laverton suffered heavy losses.

Bulldogs brace for epic end to finals push Can the Western Bulldogs do what seemed improbable only weeks ago – make the AFL finals? All will be revealed on Sunday when the eighth-placed Bulldogs take on 10th-placed Adelaide Crows at Mars Stadium in Ballarat. A win for the Bulldogs will be enough to get them a piece of the September action. The Bulldogs will be going into the game full of confidence on the back of a 61-point win over GWS Giants in Sydney on Sunday. After trailing by three points at half-time, the Bulldogs went on a rampage in the third and fourth quarters as part of a run of 12 unanswered goals. Young forward Josh Schache kicked three goals, while Tory Dickson, Patrick Lipinski, Sam Lloyd, Aaron Naughton, Bailey Dale and Josh Dunkley kicked two apiece. The leading ball winners for the Bulldogs were Jack Macrae with 39 disposals, Dunkley (31), Lipinski, Marcus Bontempelli and Jason Johannisen (27 each). In the VFL, Footscray came back from 30 points down at quarter-time to pinch a six-point win over North Melbourne at Arden Street. A snap goal from Lukas Webb deep into time on of the last quarter snared an incredible victory for the Bulldogs. It was the icing on the cake of a 31-possession, five-mark and seven-tackle game for Webb. Ben Cavarra showed his smarts around goal with three majors to go with 20 disposals, four marks and three tackles. Jordan Boyd, Rhylee West and Tate Short registered two goals apiece. If Footscray wins its final round game against Coburg Lions on Saturday, it will secure a home qualifying final. In women’s VFL, Western Bulldogs had a surprisingly comfortable 43-point win over Richmond. Elisabeth Georgostathis had a day out for the Bulldogs with 14 disposals, three goals and six tackles.
