Celebrating Jane Austen For those who have the sense and sensibility, the 11-day Jane Austen Winter Festival will be launched this month in Altona. Festival-goers will be able to experience the life and times of the English novelist at sessions exploring her writing, the fashion of the era, 18th century laws that governed Austen’s life and Regency cooking, dining and crafts. Caroline Jane Knight, Austen’s fifth great niece and the last of the family to have lived at Chawton House on the ancestral estate, will give a talk about her extraordinary childhood and show some heirlooms from her private collection. Christmas was mentioned in all of Austen’s books and the festival program includes a Christmas ghost tour of Altona Homestead and a session on the Austen family’s Christmas traditions such as playing bullet pudding and snap-dragon. Proceeds will aid the Jane Austen Literacy Foundation, which funds literacy projects for children in indigenous communities. The Jane Austen Winter Festival will be launched on Saturday, July 20 at 3pm at the Louis Joel Arts and Community Centre. Trucks win for the west By Benjamin Millar Speed limits will be cut and dirty trucks will face stricter curfews on key routes under sweeping new changes to tackle pollution and boost safety on inner-west roads. An Australian-first agreement will create an Environment Freight Zone on Footscray and Yarraville streets that will extend curfews for older trucks that don’t meet strict emission control standards. Curfews on Somerville Road and Moore, Francis and Buckley streets will be extended by two hours a day for the first two years, extending to four hours a day after that, except
for trucks manufactured since January, 2010, that meet stricter emission control standards. Truck operators caught flouting the curfews face on-the-spot fines of $165. Speed limits will also drop to 50km/h on Moore Street, along Williamstown Road north of Francis Street, on Francis Street west of Hyde Street and on Buckley Street between Nicholson Street and Geelong Road. Maribyrnong council has been pushing for the 50km/h speed limit for some time, but the change has previously been resisted by VicRoads. Roads Minister Jaala Pulford and Freight Minister Melissa Horne announced the

Ms Horne said the partnership would benefit industry and residents, while Footscray MP Katie Hall said the measures would mean fewer noisy trucks on local streets. Victorian Transport Association chief executive Peter Anderson said he was encouraged to see the government recognise the merits of the plan developed by the association and MTAG. “Industry and community groups can achieve great things when they work together and acknowledge their individual needs and interests can be achieved through compromise and mature discussions,” he said.

The partnership is a collaboration between the Victorian Transport Association, Maribyrnong Truck Action Group, VicRoads, the state government and Maribyrnong council. Maribyrnong Truck Action Group secretary Martin Wurt said residents living on truck routes would directly benefit, along with operators who invested in cleaner trucks. “Australia has one of the oldest truck fleets in the world and some of these trucks have no pollution-control measures whatsoever,” he said.

Blueprint to save Stony Creek By Benjamin Millar Acquiring private land, improving stormwater capture and educating industry are just some of the priorities outlined in a new blueprint to rehabilitate Stony Creek. Melbourne Water last week released the draft Stony Creek Rehabilitation Plan, pinpointing the steps needed to bring the heavilycontaminated creek back to health after last year’s toxic Tottenham warehouse blaze. The 10-year plan incorporates community ideas and priorities obtained at various
events and online. It notes rehabilitation and future protection of Stony Creek will require “significant, long-term changes”. Friends of Cruickshank Park chair Michael Worth warned the plan will be useless without a significant increase in state government funding. “We can’t afford to have the implementation of this plan going nowhere after a couple of years because the funding runs out,” he said. Mr Worth called for stricter controls and penalties for industries flouting the rules. “We need to prevent this from happening
again to this or any other creek or waterway in Victoria,” he said. Footscray MP Katie Hall said the rehabilitation plan marks an important milestone in the restoration of the creek. “An enormous amount of work has been undertaken to remediate the creek and now we can look more positively to the future.” Williamstown MP Melissa Horne said the state government has already spent more than $1 million to restore Stony Creek “We will continue to work with Melbourne Water, Maribyrnong council, EPA Victoria
and the community to support the long-term rehabilitation of the creek,” she said. Maribyrnong council chief executive officer Stephen Wall said all costs incurred relating to the fire and recovery efforts have so far been covered by normal operating budgets. “Reimbursement will be sought from the state government to recover the costs,” he said. Feedback closes July 31 at yoursay. m e l b ou r ne w at e r. c om . au /s t ony- c re e krehabilitation The final plan will be released in August or September.

Sefo Sefokuli has been named Brazilian jiu jitsu state champion in both Victoria and New South Wales. (Damjan Janevski)
Martial artist with a taste for titles A Brooklyn martial artist is next month vying for a national title after being named Brazilian jiu jitsu state champion in both Victoria and New South Wales. Sefo Sefokuli started training at Altona North academy, Rise Mixed Martial Arts, just three years ago. His interest was sparked when a friend showed him some moves. “He was a really small kid … I was twice his size and he would be able to put me down and do incredible stuff,” Sefokuli said.
“Once I started, I fell in love with it.” He won last month’s Australian Federation of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu NSW championship in the medium-heavyweight blue belt division. This came on the back of winning the Victorian championship in April. “I’m looking at the nationals in a month for an Australian title and then the next one is Tasmania,” Sefokuli said. “It’s really self-based how hard you would like to push yourself. “Personally, I want to do more than just
Australia – I want to go overseas.” Head coach Cam Rowe said Sefokuli showed so much promise he had been made assistant instructor at the school and was on his way to becoming a coach. “He has a passion for martial arts, in particular Brazilian jiu jitsu,” Rowe said. “The nationals are coming up in August – I definitely think he can win that and continue on to go international.”
Forty new dads will have the chance to boost their skills and confidence after a grant worth almost $80,000 was awarded to a Footscray-based early parenting organisation. Philanthropic trust Helen Macpherson Smith Trust has gifted $78,760 to Tweddle Child and Family Health Service to help put the next batch of western suburbs dads through the popular Working Out Dads program. Early fatherhood support is scarce despite one in 10 Australian fathers experiencing poor physical and mental health in their child’s critical early years. This has flow-on effects including reduced productivity, adverse effects on child health and family violence. Tweddle chief executive Jacquie O’Brien praised the Trust’s decision to invest in early intervention for dads. “Research links fathers’ mental health and low parenting confidence with relationship conflict and hostile parenting which impacts a child’s social and emotional health,” she said. “This grant is vital in the evolution of Working Out Dads and scoping the program to reach as many dads as possible into the future.” Tweddle has delivered 13 Working Out Dads programs across the western suburbs so far. Helen Macpherson Smith Trust chief executive Lin Bender said the funding will also underpin a partnership between Tweddle and Social Ventures Australia to help the program remain viable, grow in size and roll out into new areas. Bridge bid steps it up
Carjacker loses apeal
By Goya Dmytryshchak Hobsons Bay council, pedestrians and cyclists have launched a campaign calling for a safe crossing over the Queen Street road bridge at Altona Meadows. They say it’s unsafe for people on foot or bikes, who have to go 600 metres out of their way to safely cross Laverton Creek. Major Road Projects Victoria, which is upgrading the bridge to strengthen it, is being urged to include a pedestrian and cycling link. The bridge, which has about 20,000 vehicles
A man who used a chainsaw to steal a BMW, which later crashed into a Laverton gaming machine venue, has lost his bid to cut his jail term. Storm Piacentino was sentenced to four years and five months’ jail with a non-parole period of two years and seven months for the 2017 carjacking at Reservoir. He argued in the Court of Appeal that inadequate weight was given to his intellectual disability and that he received a longer sentence than his co-offender. Piacentino, 25 at the time of the crime, had shoved the chainsaw inside the BMW’s driver’s window onto the driver’s arm causing a large cut. The chainsaw then stalled. The victim ran into a shop and Piacentino’s co-offender chased him and threatened to shoot him if he didn’t hand over the keys, which he did. A month later, police saw the BMW speeding with its headlights off before crashing into Club Laverton. The Court of Appeal judges found Piacentino’s mild intellectual disability did not reduce his moral culpability. They said the sentencing judge took into account his serious prior convictions and that his use of a running chainsaw was “chilling” and “elevated his participation to an alarming extent”. His co-offender received a different sentence because his offending and circumstances were different.

going over it each day, is the main arterial connecting Hobsons Bay’s east and west. Mayor Jonathon Marsden said the state government had for years ignored numerous calls to create a safe crossing over the bridge for pedestrians, cyclists, joggers and people with disabilities. “People risk their lives every day walking on the road bridge to cross here,” he said. “That bridge has created a divide in our community for decades; it was never fit for purpose as just a road bridge and the proposed upgrade looks to repeat that same mistake. “We have this absurd situation where council has built these fantastic cycling and pedestrian shared trails on both sides of the bridge and finally there is a chance to link them but the state government just wants to maintain the road for cars. Cr Marsden urged people to get involved in the campaign by contacting the road

Hub plan for Footscray station By Benjamin Millar A key stretch of Paisley Street will be transformed and the state government will be pushed to turn Footscray railway station into a dedicated transport hub under plans to revitalise central Footscray. Maribyrnong council revealed an ambitious $9 million plan earlier this year to revitalise Footscray by moving bus stops clogging Paisley Street to a transport interchange at the nearby train station on Irving Street. The council estimated about $6 million
will need to be spent just to fix Paisley Street, including footpath repairs and installing bicycle lanes. After community feedback overwhelmingly supported the changes, councillors resolved at the recent city development meeting to proceed to a detailed design stage of the Paisley Street Streetscape Improvement Plan and advocate to the state government for a centralised transport interchange. The council will spend $300,000 on designs and $3 million has been earmarked in the 2020/21 budget to start construction of the
section of Paisley Street between Leeds Street and Albert Street. A further $550,000 will be spent on Irving Street improvements once the transport interchange is implemented. The plans acknowledges Footscray’s status as Melbourne’s busiest suburban train station and second busiest area for bus movements. A council report on the plans stated they were developed to address infrastructure issues and improve the surrounding area. “Implementation would encourage investment into the local economy, improving
existing businesses and contribute to a vibrant central activity centre,” it states. “The project, however, relies on removal of bus stops from Paisley Street and their relocation in Irving Street as part of a new centralised transport interchange.” The report stated that a transport interchange with adjacent train, buses and trams would deliver “multiple benefits” for businesses and public transport users in Footscray. The council will also lobby VicTrack to review its sites along Hyde and Irving streets to improve the surrounding areas.
Bob’s book for young pups Legendary Bulldogs captain Bob Murphy has joined forces with author Tony Wilson to refashion his acclaimed memoir, tailoring it to younger readers. A Boy Called Bob Becomes an AFL Footballer finds Murphy and Wilson tracing the true story of how Murphy became one of the greatest AFL captains of all time, steering his team from one of its darkest periods to the brink of the 2016 premiership. Determined to follow in his hero Matthew Richardson’s footsteps and become one of the game’s greats, Bob overcomes pesky siblings and a school footy oval made of gravel to get drafted to the Western Bulldogs at 17 and enjoy a 17-year playing career with the club. Dismay over dumping
Green light for bike skills track
By Goya Dmytryshchak Hobsons Bay council has put rubbish dumpers on notice after reports of littering in Williamstown North. Resident Sasha Talbot told Star Weekly that vacant land around Quarry Reserve was being used as a rubbish tip. “I still don’t know who owns it, she said. “It’s such a mess. I just want that place cleared up. “People’s houses actually look out onto this bit of land and I don’t know why they would be putting up with it – every time they look out, just seeing mounds of rubbish everywhere. Ms Talbot said she tried to avoid the area after finding a dead horse and dead dog. “I very rarely go in there since we found the horse and then the dog was the last straw, she said. “It’s getting worse. It looks like a tip. “No one’s looking after it. You can drive down the railway line so people can just go straight in there, dump rubbish and drive off. Council officers have since collected rubbish dumped in Quarry Reserve and at the end of Akuna Drive. During a site visit by council officers, further rubbish was seen on private land west of Quarry Reserve. The council issued the landowners with a notice to comply, giving them 21 days to clean up their land. Hobsons Bay mayor Jonathon Marsden said dumped rubbish cost ratepayers about $400,000 a year. “We maintain a database of dumped rubbish hot spots, which helps us with our monitoring, but ultimately it comes down to people taking responsibility for their own waste, he said. “Most people do the right thing, but a small number consider our public open spaces and their nature strip to be places where they can dump their unwanted items, often large objects

that could have easily been collected through council’s hard waste service. Residents can arrange a free hard rubbish collection, including mattresses and furniture, by calling the council on 9932 1000. The council
runs free electronic waste and household chemical collections each year. Illegal waste can be reported for pick-up by the council by using the Snap Send Solve app or by calling 9932 1000.
Construction will begin on a $300,000 junior bike skills track at Hansen Reserve early next year after Maribyrnong council approved a concept plan for the project. The council is chipping in $100,000 as part of its redevelopment of the popular West Footscray reserve, topping up the $200,000 kickstart it received last year from scoring the highest number of local votes in the state government’s Pick My Project scheme. Proposed by BikeWest to help children learn safe riding skills, the park will be the first of its kind in Victoria. The concept incorporates a series of paths and more challenging elements such as roundabouts and humps to develop specific riding skills. It will also include landscape features such as a tunnel and bridge crossing. A viewing area will be built for carers and spectators, incorporating seating, shade, bike racks and a bicycle repair and pump station. It follows the recent rebuilding of the Kingsville Tennis Pavilion at the reserve, replacing a 1950s era pavilion that was demolished to make way for the new construction. The council is continuing to work through other elements of Hansen Reserve’s redevelopment, including the creation of an adventure playground, a basketball court and skating area, public toilets, barbecues, lighting and tree planting. Rapist jailed for historic crime By Goya Dmytryshchak A former Williamstown shipyard worker has been sentenced to 10 years jail for his role in a brutal New Year’s Day gang rape three decades ago. Gregory John Challenger, 57, must spend at least seven years behind bars before being eligible for parole after being found guilty of three charges of aggravated rape by a County Court jury. He was linked to the 1986 cold case by DNA technology not available at the time.
The victim, then aged 21, had travelled to Lorne with friends to celebrate New Year’s Eve. After watching the fireworks, she sat on a blanket with a young man before realising there were people hiding in the dunes. Four men surrounded the pair and the victim’s friend ran to get help. Two of the men started grabbing at the victim, who began screaming and yelling. One of the men, later identified as Challenger, punched her twice in the face before sexually assaulting her.
The men then dragged her over a barbed wire fence and the victim was sexually assaulted again. The assault only stopped when a passer-by intervened. In 2015, the year Challenger was made redundant from BAE Systems at Williamstown, his saliva sample was taken as part of an unrelated investigation. A computer-generated comparison linked him to the 1986 crime. In 2016, the victim was shown 12 photographs including one of Challenger taken in 1987.
The court heard the victim began to shake and identified Challenger as the man who had punched and raped her. She said, “It’s him, it is his eyes”. Challenger pleaded not guilty to all charges but his alibi was rejected by a jury. In her victim impact statement read out to the court the woman wrote: “The clenched fist coming towards my face remains a most vivid memory and the one that wakes me from nightmares.” The court heard Challenger would likely remain in protective custody in prison.
Crowd buzz lifts ninjas Audience members for Australian Ninja Warrior episodes filmed at Spotswood last year may see themselves on TV when Nine’s smash hit show returns to screens this week. In 2019, one of the 200 competitors will receive $100,000, which jackpots to $300,000 if they climb Mount Midoriyama, described as the show’s “pinnacle obstacle”. Host Rebecca Maddern told Star Weekly it was exciting to be crowning Australia’s first ninja warrior. “This year, I truly believe it is the hardest course that we have ever put together on Australia Ninja Warrior Warrior,” she said. “And it needs to be, because we promote the fact that this is the toughest obstacle course in the world. “There is a choice that athletes have to make at the end of the heats and that is to go up the warped wall or the mega warped wall. “On top of the mega warped wall, there is a
cash bonus – that’s $5000 if you get up the mega warped wall – but that is another metre higher (5.25 metres) so that’s a big choice to make.” Maddern said audience enthusiasm had boosted competitors’ performances. “There’s no shows like this filmed in Australia so we’re very thankful for our really supportive audience,” she said. “They get to see television and behind the scenes and how it’s made and everybody who you speak to in the crowd just loves the experience because it’s a live sporting event. “It’s not TV that stops and starts and we do 100 takes – it’s one take, and they’re part of the action. The audience makes up a really key component of the show. “If the crowd is really loud, you’ll see more often than not the competitors perform better than they expected.” Goya Dmytryshchak

Former star’s phone plea By Goya Dmytryshchak The average football supporter knows absolutely nothing about Glenn Manton. Those are the words of the man himself, who will be at Newport next week to talk about his latest book, Put Your Damn Phone Down. The former AFL star and author, who has a background in education, says the book contains 50 provocative questions interspersed with “absolutely brutal” stories from his life. “Stories that’ll make your skin crawl,” the Williamstown resident says.

“Stories that I know young people, in particular, love hearing about.” The stories are designed to look at various aspects of life, including physical health, mental health, relationships, communication, highs and lows and everything in between. “They’re stories that galvanise and promote thinking, particularly within young people,” Manton said. “I’ve had a very, very big life. I’ve fallen down every crack, I’ve climbed every mountain and I’ve done everything in between, so I’m not the sort of person who just sat on the couch.” In 1999, Manton co-founded Whitelion, a not-for-profit organisation supporting young people in custody and afterwards. “Whitelion was on the back end of me as a 25-year-old being invited to go and speak to some young people in prison,” he said. “I worked with a young heroin addict for about four years almost every day whilst I was

playing AFL football.” Manton says he doesn’t think banning mobile phones in school’s is the answer, as phones can sometimes be a creative resource that can spawn conversations. “I think the entire education space needs a shake-up,” he said. “That was the idea in the book: rather than say, ‘Hey, put it down, it’s a disaster, you’re a disaster’, it’s a case of saying,
‘hey, can we put it down for a period of time and find more creative and productive ways to use it’.” Glenn Manton will give an author’s talk about Put Your Damn Phone Down on Wednesday, July 17 from 6.30-7.30pm at Newport Community Hub. Bookings via libraries.hobsonsbay.vic.gov.au or 1300 462 542.
A Truganina-based bus company has placed Australia’s biggest single order of hybrid buses. Along with the state government, CDC Victoria – a subsidiary of international transport company ComfortDelGro – has ordered 50 of the hybrid vehicles from Volvo. CDC Victoria’s chief executive Nicholas Yap said the hybrid buses would service 47 Melbourne routes, stretching across 90 suburbs. “The order of the 50 Volvo Euro 6 hybrid buses means that one-in-four of our metro Melbourne bus fleet will be a hybrid bus by mid-2022,” Mr Yap said. Speaking at CDC’s Truganina depot recently, Mr Yap said the hybrid buses produced 40 per cent less diesel fuel and carbon dioxide emissions compared to a regular diesel bus. The 50 hybrid buses’ construction and fit-out was carried out in Dandenong. Alesha Capone

Altona aircraft noise complaint By Goya Dmytryshchak An Altona resident has lodged a complaint about low-flying planes with the Aircraft Noise Ombudsman amid fears that a third runway at Melbourne Airport could increase air traffic over Maribyrnong and Hobsons Bay. The airport is exploring the option of a new runway running north-south. The Altona resident, who asked not to be named, said a north-south runway would
mean more planes flying over the Hobsons Bay area, “creating a lot more noise, 24/7”. The complaint followed last year’s decision to allow large aircraft to fly about 150 metres lower over Hobsons Bay. Australia’s air navigation service provider, Airservices Australia, gained approval from the Civil Aviation Safety Authority to allow large aircraft to fly at 2000 feet instead of 2500 feet over Altona. “We’re talking Boeing 737s right through to Airbuses,” the resident said.
“Because we don’t have a curfew on our airport – we run 24/7 – these planes flying so low, they keep waking me up from my sleep. “You can hear them to the point that when they turn their thrust line to change the engines to turn the plane, you can hear it pick up and it is crystal clear.” An Airservices Australia spokesperson said the number of aircraft movements could change with the weather and seasons because aircraft must take off and land into the wind.
“In the cooler months, northerly winds typically increase, which means the arrival flight path over Altona and neighbouring suburbs must be used more frequently,” the spokesperson said. “Once the final proposal from Melbourne Airport is put forward, Airservices Australia will consider the airspace requirements for the third runway.” The airport will hold community workshops on the new runway on July 25 in Altona from 10am-2pm and Footscray from 2-4pm. Mental health day push A Bill proposed by six young people from Hobsons Bay calling for the introduction of mental health days in the state’s secondary schools successfully passed in Victoria’s Youth Parliament last week. Young participants from the Hobsons Bay area have pushed for senior secondary school students to have the opportunity to take up to four days off a year to focus on their mental health. The students behind the Bill were Kate Pritchard, Max Buchhloz, Dale Pye, Robert Milich, Ned McVicar and Olivia Vlahakis. Miss Pritchard, a year 12 student, believes the Bill will improve the schooling experiences for many young Victorians. “The stigma around mental health is damaging, and it’s not going away anytime soon … it’s okay not to be okay and this Bill would help the people that would need it the most,” Kate Pritchard said. “This next step needs to be in the education system.”
The team has a first-hand understanding of the pressure VCE has on young people and hope their Bill will benefit wellbeing and studies. “There needs to be a new avenue for these students … we need to stop punishing young students over something they can’t change,” Miss Vlahakis said. “Four days would have been a [great help] help to me in school.” YMCA Victoria Youth Parliament is a program designed to give young Victorians between the ages of 16-25 a chance to be heard at the highest levels of state government on a wide range of issues relevant to young people’s lives. To date, over 30 Youth Parliament Bills have gone onto become Victorian legislation. The Bill was passed with amendments and will now be considered by the relevant Victorian government minister. By Allanah Sciberras, a member of the YMCA Youth Press Gallery.

MY PLACE Alison Brideson (writing as Alison Stuart) lives in Williamstown, which makes an appearance in her latest book The Postmistress. She speaks with Goya Dmytryshchak. I was a nomad. By the time I was 25, I’d lived in Africa and Perth before my parents settled in Melbourne. I yearned for somewhere to put down roots and where I could become part of the community. Somewhere I could belong. My now husband had settled in Williamstown to be close to his work and instantly I knew this was the place. We have been here ever since 1983. You will have to dig me out with spades. I am never leaving. What do you like about Williamstown? I love its small town feel. I feel as though I belong here. I can walk down the street and see people I know, who all smile and say hello. It’s hard to think we’re part of an ever growing big city. I also love that there’s water all around because apart from being wonderful feng shui, it is the perfect place for long, thoughtful, inspiring, writerly walks! What don’t you like or what could be improved? The unrestrained development that has been permitted in recent years fills me with despair. It is eroding the very essence of Williamstown that draws people to us. Old buildings are going and that sense of village where everyone knows each other is being lost. I am not anti development but I do believe it has to be sensitive and sustainable. What’s your favourite cafe and/or restaurant in the local area and why?
Parade Deli for Jo’s ‘Healthy One’ breakfast and Cafe Cirino for the dark, hot chocolate but I particularly love The Greenery in Ferguson Street, which is both cafe and restaurant. Can you tell me about your latest book? The Postmistress is my ninth book, but my first set in Australia. It’s based around the goldfields of Gippsland in the 1870s. It is a story of love, duplicity, new starts and fleeing from old ghosts. The hero bears the scars of his service during the American Civil War and the heroine is fleeing a puritanical father who won’t forgive her for what he perceives are her sins. They are both seeking a new life and a new start in the goldfields around the fictional Maiden’s Creek, but before they can move forward they must deal with the ghosts from their past. Williamstown gets a cameo in the book. Can you tell us about that? How could I not include Williamstown in a story of the early days of the colony? Williamstown’s connection with the confederate war ship, the CSS Shenandoah, was one of the major inspirations for the story so it seemed appropriate that my confederate hero begins his new life in Australia with a two-up game in a pub in Williamstown. It was so much fun imagining my own hometown back in its wild and woolly days!
(Damjan Janevski)
What’s your connection to Hobsons Bay?

Jaydah Turner moved from Humpty Doo to West Footscray to study. (Damjan Janevski)
Jaydah’s long journey It’s a long way from Humpty Doo to West Footscray. Jaydah Turner, a young Marranuggu woman who moved almost 4000 kilometres from the small Northern Territory town to Melbourne to study, was drawn by the promise of a vibrant city full of opportunities. Ms Turner, 19, heard about Victoria University from her uncle, who recently completed his studies at the uni. “I came down and did a tour and met some staff members of the uni and I was very certain that this uni is where I wanted to complete my studies,” she said. Juggling work and study has posed a challenge, along with not knowing anyone her age in Melbourne when she arrived.
However Ms Turner has now met “lots of wonderful people” and takes pride in having made the move at such a young age, drawing on the guiding strength of her Marranuggu heritage. “To me being a Marranuggu woman is to be strong, respectful of my culture and hardworking,” she said. The second year youth work student is living out the theme of this year’s Naidoc Week (July 7-14) of working together for a shared future. “Working within schools with Indigenous young people would be something I would like to do, although I’m still not 100 per cent sure,” she said. Townhouse life is looking mighty fine with this one, all sparkly new and treated to trappings that not only evoke luxury but also up the liveability factor. The sound-proofing throughout, plus the double-glazed windows, high ceilings and hardwood floorboards, probably belong in both categories. The fat stone benches, touch-pad access, and the Ilve tag on appliances are flat-out luxe – as is a rarity for new inner-ring properties: the large drive-through garage

Each bedroom has a split-system, while the largest also has an en suite. The swish shared bathroom is fully tiled in a veined-marble look, and has an inviting tub, a shower, and dual basins atop a seamless floating vanity. With a laundry and powder room down
the back, the ground floor’s living hub has those floorboards providing a warm juxtaposition with the crisp-white wall paint and black window frames. The street-facing sitting area has fab corner picture windows, and there’s another one in the dining area that also has bifolds to the back garden. The kitchen, at the centre, is sleek and white, with marble-like veins in the stone benches having a lovely softening effect. The island bench can seat up to four, the

Within five-minute ambles of Esplanade waterfront and reserves, this Victorian with a circa 1960s side extension sits on a corner block of about 330 square metres. It has potential to be divided into two properties (already with their own address), or reconfigure and spruce up the lavish internal space to form a great family home in a great locale. The Victorian section has original leadlight front door and ornate cornices on high ceilings. There are four bedrooms scattered through, one with a fireplace. A lounge-dining room is at the centre and there are two kitchens – one galley-style with a more modern fitout, the other an older style. Both bathrooms function as laundries. A huge covered alfresco with paving underfoot connects with a garage and workshop, accessed from the side street, and there’s no land out back to maintain.
Charming and full of character, this residence sits on a block of about 400 square metres directly opposite Edina Street Reserve. It has four spacious fitted bedrooms that share a revamped bathroom with white tiling and a raised basin atop a storage-rich vanity. There’s also a powder room. Entry is directly into a living room where original cottage windows, picture rails, and floorboards juxtapose with white wall paint – as in all living areas. The adjoining spruced up kitchen has white cabinetry and benches, plus a dishwasher and gas upright cooker. A terrific family room, with access to a verandah, has white-painted ceiling beams, an exposed brick wall, and built-in bookshelves. The property, with potential rent of $550 a week, has heating and cooling throughout and is a stroll from station and shops.

33 MARIBYRNONG & HOBSONS BAY STAR WEEKLY \ JULY 10, 2019
SPORT Altona Roosters’ combo deals deliver red-hot form Altona Roosters are the form team of the NRL Victoria first grade. The Roosters are riding a six-game winning streak that has included defeats of the top two sides, Truganina Rabbitohs and Werribee Bears. It has been an incredible turnaround for the Roosters, who lost their opening five matches of the season. Roosters captain Jackson Brenchley said his side’s run of bad luck appeared to be over. “We were a bit unlucky at the start of the year,” he said. “We had a few injuries and we had some bits and pieces not go our way.” He pinpoints the loss to Casey Warriors in round four as a turning point when the Roosters began to find some belief amid a hellish run. “Probably the turnaround was the loss to Casey … we scored four tries, didn’t kick a goal and they scored three tries and kicked all their goals and won by two points,” he said.
Altona has been dangerous in attack from the first game of the season, but the improvement has come from its defence. In the first five rounds, the Roosters conceded 30.4 points a game, but during the current winning run that has dropped to a more manageable 19 per game. “The last six weeks it’s come together,” Brenchley said. “We’re playing the way we want to play, playing our brand. We’re just winning ugly, which is typical of the Roosters over the years – grinding out wins.” Altona has made some key structural moves to find the right balance. The defence has been strengthened with the addition of brothers Jordan and Shayne Peato. “They’re just tough as,” Brenchley said. “Defensively, they just hold guys out that normally would run over teams.” The biggest changes came in the halves combination. Brenchley was moved into the hooker role,

making way for a new combo of half-back Blaze Rata and five-eighth Josh Ka. “I started the year in the halves and it wasn’t really working for us,” Brenchley said. “They moved me back to hooker and we moved Josh Ka to five-eighth and he’s been able to pull out the right plays at the right time.”
Brenchley is the leading points scorer in the competition. He has scored three tries to go with 26 goals for 64 points. Roosters second rower Maier Laga is the leading tryscorer in the competition with nine – three ahead of teammate Rata and Sunbury’s Alti Porter. July is a stop-start month for Altona. The Roosters will face third-placed Northern Thunder this Saturday before a week’s break, then square off with ladder leaders Truganina and Werribee in the following two weeks. The Roosters cannot afford to take their eyes off the ball. “The next three games are our biggest tests, I reckon,” Brenchley said. “Northern Thunder is two games ahead of us, Werribee, last year’s premiers, is two games ahead of us and Truganina is three games ahead on top. Those three teams are the teams to beat.” Lance Jenkinson
Western Jets dig deep By Lance Jenkinson Western Jets had to win mental and physical battles to hold on for a memorable nine-point win over a star-studded Sandringham Dragons in the NAB League at Downer Oval on Saturday. Leading by 34 points at three-quarter time, the Jets defended grimly in the last quarter to stave off a late Dragons threat and grab a win that will long be celebrated. Jets football operations manager Matthew Dervan described the match as “a fantastic advertisement” for NAB League football. “You had a quality outfit in Sandringham, but from our point of view, we thought we put out a side that could definitely go head to head with them,” he said. “It was amazing to get the four points. It’s probably the best win I’ve been involved in at the club in a long while.” Sandringham kicked the only four goals of a last quarter that had a bit of one-way traffic about it. That prompted Jets coach Ryan O’Keefe to dig deep into his bag of tricks and swing key forward Emerson Jeka to the backline in a bid to save the game. Jeka’s defending late on was crucial to the Jets holding on to their lead. “We threw him back for the first time this year,” Dervan said. “He’s such a versatile player that he can play forward and back … it adds to his draftable characteristics.” Western Jets ruckman Will Kennedy had a big day against his former side. Kennedy was arguably the best player on the ground, leading the way with 33 hit-outs and dominating aerially with six marks to go with 15 disposals. “He stood up in the ruck against two quality Vic Metro ruckmen,” Dervan said. “He’s such a versatile player … he has the ability to win the ball and he is a really good decision maker.” Jonah Horo and Daly Andrews were the most effective midfielders for the Jets. Other big possession getters for the Western Jets were Bailey Ryan, Josh Honey and Lucas Rocci. Archi Manton was crucial at both ends, kicking two goals and taking some game-saving marks in the last quarter, while Cody Raak impressed in defence. Dervan was pleased with how the Jets reacted when Sandringham took the challenge up to them late. “The boys threw everything into that last 10 to 15 minutes to hold on and get a well-deserved win,” Dervan said. “As the time got closer to the end, the confidence and composure came 34 MARIBYRNONG & HOBSONS BAY STAR WEEKLY \ JULY 10, 2019

back – to know that we were the better side for most of the game and we deserved to win.” The Jets had been a little blunt in attack for a couple of games, but they needed to be at their best to kick a winning score against Sandringham. Aaron Clarke and Lucas Failli led the way with three goals apiece.
“We haven’t really been at our best in the forward half the past couple of weeks, but the mix came together,” Dervan said. The Jets will have two weekends off before their next match, against Murray Bushrangers on the road at Norm Minns Oval on July 27. The Jets head into the break in fourth spot with an 8-4 record.
Williamstown has produced a Saturday evening special to roll Point Cook 3-0 in the Football Victoria men’s state league 3 north-west competition. Blues striker Graham Bell continued his rich goal scoring form with a double to take his season tally to eight in seven games. Alex Vlassis also got on the scoresheet for the second week running. It was Williamstown’s third win in succession, consolidating third spot on the ladder. The Blues are still a long way behind the top two, eight points in arrears of second placed Lalor United, but they do have a game in hand and will keep fighting for promotion. Williamstown will be back on the road on Saturday for a crucial away game against top-of-the-ladder FC Strathmore. In men’s state league 1, Altona City had a comprehensive 3-0 win over Brimbank Stallions at H.C. Kim Reserve. Harrison Hanley scored a double for City. Yarraville Glory enjoyed a 2-0 victory over Whittlesea United. In men’s state league 2, Altona East Phoenix went down 3-1 to Corio. It was a catch-up round in the women’s competitions, so most local teams had the weekend off. One game that was played was a tight affair between Maidstone United and Maribyrnong Swifts Thunder in state league 3. United emerged victorious 1-0 after a goal to Eleni Antoniadis. In the NPL, Altona Magic lost on home soil 1-0 to Heidelberg United. Lance Jenkinson

Young star thrives in green and gold Up-and-coming Point Cook basketballer Paul Tsapatolis has already had a year to savour. But the 17-year-old is hoping the second half of the year will provide even more excitement. Tsapatolis played a significant role in Victoria Metro’s under-18 men’s team winning gold at the Basketball Australia junior national championships in Townsville in April. The towering centre was a powerhouse for the Big V, averaging 11.2 points and 9.2 rebounds a game across the tournament. He was also hard-nosed in defence, averaging 1.6 blocks and a steal a game. Tsapatolis represented Vic Metro twice in the under-16s and this was his second effort with the under-18s. “I reckon it was my best nationals out of the four years I’ve had,” Tsapatolis said. The gold medal will be a constant reminder for Tsapatolis of the mayhem that took place in the final against South Australia. Vic Metro was seemingly down and out, trailing by as much as 17 points in the second half, but it fought its way back to claim victory in dramatic circumstances.
“It was a remarkable win and I won’t ever forget that,” Tsapatolis said. “The celebrations were just crazy. “We were all getting around each other and we got a 20-litre bucket full of ice and tipped it on our coach. “We stayed up all night enjoying our victory and probably didn’t get to bed until 5am.” Even staring at the massive deficit, Tsapatolis never gave up hope on Vic Metro making a comeback in that incredible match. The youngster from the Keilor Thunder harked back to the hard work the team had put in before the championships and the bond among the players as reasons why Vic Metro could claim the prize after being in a dire situation. “I believed it,” Tsapatolis said. “All our hard training and work got us belief to win that game.” Aside from heartily enjoying the spoils of victory, Tsapatolis had an even greater reason to smile soon after the nationals when he was invited to tryout for the Australian under-17 squad. He went into the camp full of confidence and made the final cut to represent Australia at
the under-17 Oceania Championships in New Caledonia next month. “I had a great nationals, so I was feeling good about myself getting a try-out call,” he said. “The fact that I got chosen says that all of my hard work has paid off.” Tsapatolis will be aiming for the starting centre role for Australia. But the Maribyrnong College year 11 student will play any role deemed necessary for the team as the players strive to become Oceania champions. “It’s just an honour, at the end of the day, to play for my country,” he said. Tsapatolis is the July nominee for the Don Deeble Rising Star award. The award, hosted by the Sunshine Western Region Sports Club and Star Weekly, recognises young athletes from the western suburbs who have achieved outstanding results at state and or national levels. Tsapatolis will receive $1000 and other prizes, donated by the Yarraville Club Cricket Club, to assist him in achieving his sports goals. Lance Jenkinson

By Lance Jenkinson Braybrook took one too many blows early in the season and is paying the price for it now in the Western Region Football League division 3. The Brookers have looked every bit a finals contender over the past six weeks, but one mis-step has seen it reach a critical juncture in their campaign. An untimely 34-point loss to Sunshine Heights at Pennell Reserve on Saturday snapped a five-week unbeaten run for the Brookers and has them at the crossroads. The Brookers are a game and a half outside the top four with six games to play as their slow start to the season has come back to bite them. Braybrook coach Jason Hamilton knew finals would be a long shot when they slumped to 2-4 in the first six games, but it did not deter his players from striving to reach their goal. When you start behind the eight ball though, you need to make every post a winner and the defeat to Sunshine Heights hurt the Brookers big time. “It’s hard to get up every week after a bad start,” Hamilton said. “The last five weeks we’ve been on top of our game and I was hoping we could continue on with that, but this was just a bad day for us. “I’m not taking anything away from Sunshine Heights because they were too good on the day. “We still can play finals if we can string more games together, but it’s getting more difficult by the week now.” Try as they might, Braybrook just could not get up for defender Luke Fox’s 250th game. That is what disappoints Hamilton the most that the Brookers could not give Fox, one of the Brookers top clubmen, a day to remember. “He gives you everything that he has in his body,” Hamilton said. “He’s been really good for us this year, not only with what he does on the field, but he does a lot off the field for the club as well. “Since I’ve come to the club, he’s one of the guys who has stood out how he gives and very rarely takes.” Braybrook was in striking distance at half time, trailing by 14 points. After the main break, Sunshine Heights took over, kicking five of the last eight goals of the game to run out convincing winners. The Heights were just a little more energised, while the Brookers were a bit flat, perhaps a byproduct of their bruising encounter seven days earlier in the wet against Albanvale, which finished in a draw. “I just think Sunshine Heights wanted it more to be honest,” Hamilton said. “They played good physical footy, good

Football
Footscray had a resounding 58-point win over Richmond at the Whitten Oval that will have the rest of the Victorian Football League sit up and take note. The Bulldogs banged on seven goals to one in the final term to record a percentage boosting win. Keys for the Bulldogs were Bailey Dale, who had 27 disposals and two goals, Anthony Scott, who booted four goals to go with 15 disposals and seven tackles. Williamstown had a comfortable 62-point win over Frankston at Downer Oval.

running footy and our players probably didn’t stick to the game plan and the game structure that we put in place. “Every time we tried to get back into it, they had an answer.” Braybrook had some players win their position battles, but just not enough. Nick Gregson played one of his best games of the year, swinging back and forth between forward and defence. Fox was reliable deep in defence in his milestone game. It is approaching a must-win stage of the season for Braybrook. The Brookers are keen to make amends for their earlier loss to Glen Orden when they square off at Heathdale Oval on Saturday.
“Glen Orden absolutely toweled us up last time,” Hamilton said. “They got us verbally, physically and everything else in a game of footy, they dished it up to us. “We’re pretty keen to try and make amends on that.” Meanwhile, Laverton fought hard against Albanvale, but ultimately went down by 29 points. In division 1, Altona won the match of the day over Werribee Districts by 14 points to keep hold of second. Spotswood is still the top dog after a 126-point thrashing of Albion. In division 2, Yarraville Seddon enjoyed a solid 32-point victory over West Footscray, but there were losses for North Footscray and Parkside.
Footscray and Altona will square off in the first Hockey Victoria matches after the mid-season break at the Footscray Hockey Centre this Saturday. The first western derby on the schedule will be the women’s premier league match from 2pm between Footscray and Altona. At 3.30pm, the men’s premier league action will begin with Footscray the warm favourites as the side entrenched in the top eight, while Altona strives for an upset to push into one of the finals positions.
Netball
City West Falcons are not being weighed down by the chase for an undefeated Victorian Netball League championship division season. The Falcons made it a perfect 15-0 start to the season with a hard-fought 55-47 win over Peninsula Waves at the State Netball and Hockey Centre on Wednesday night.
