Cricketers’ UK crusade Two Braybrook students are on a cricket tour that is the stuff of dreams. Bol Abiem and Chiem Mayoum are on the Crusaders’ tour of the UK, including 32 matches in 26 days. The touring squad will play on some of the best grounds in the world, including Lenheim Palace, Robertsbridge, Lord Sheffield’s ground (the origin of the Sheffield Shield), Whitgift School and Lords. But Chiem is looking forward to a different sort of highlight. “I’m really looking forward to meeting the Queen,” Chiem said. “We get to play against the Royal Household at Windsor Castle, so that will be an amazing experience.” Crusaders Cricket Australia runs various programs and tours to promote cricket. Chiem and Bol, both off-spin bowlers, began their cricketing careers at Sunshine Heights Cricket Club. Taking on the toxic toll By Benjamin Millar The waste crisis threatening the liveability of Melbourne’s suburbs has a determined new foe – the Anti-Toxic Waste Alliance. Chaired by Yarraville campaigner Sue Vittori, the coalition of more than 30 organisations is pressuring the state government to take stronger measures to protect communities from threats posed by toxic waste stockpiled near residential areas in Melbourne’s west and north. The alliance (A-TWA) brings together concerned groups frustrated at three “horrific toxic waste fires” breaking out in Melbourne’s western and northern suburbs in the past two years. Ms Vittori said the group wanted more done to tackle continuing threats from badly

Flu vaccine supply under strain By Goya Dmytryshchak and Benjamin Millar Vaccines are running out in some parts of Melbourne’s west as the number of Victorians diagnosed with the flu tops 18,600 – nine times more than at the same time last year. Altona North doctor Mukesh Haikerwal said it had been “a massive” year for flu. “We’ve vaccinated around 3000 people in our practice alone,” he said. “It’s been very, very full-on for all of our staff.”

Dr Haikerwal said that following an advertising campaign by state and federal governments, his clinic had faced vaccine supply issues. “We still have pockets of lack of supply, especially for private flu vaccines, which we

have to beg, borrow or steal to get [for] people who are wanting to be immunised,” he said. “We were running immunising clinics for 200 or 300 in a day, and then not having enough for the next clinic, so having to wait for more stock before booking more clinics.” The former World Medical Association chairman and former Australian Medical Association president said supply had improved, but stocks were running low at what was the height of vaccinating season. More than 30 people, including three

children, have died in Victoria from the flu this year, Health Minister Jenny Mikakos confirmed this month. A Western Health spokesman said there had been a noticeable increase in hospital admissions for people suffering flu-like symptoms since the start of June. He said the rise was being experienced across all age categories, but particularly among children. The situation could further worsen in coming months, as flu cases typically peaked in September.

School film paints a smiling picture Yarraville Special Developmental School is hoping to have plenty of reasons to smile when the winners of a national short film competition are announced. The school’s documentary, My Painted Smile, is a finalist in the NOVA Employment 2019 Focus On Ability Short Film Awards. Celebrating their 11th birthday, the awards encourage filmmakers to focus on the ability of people with disability. Last year’s festival attracted 245 entries, including 104 school entries. Yarraville Special Developmental School teacher Greg Gozdz said the school’s short film

was a collabortion between himself and student Tommy. “Tommy has been drawing little Pokémon-inspired creatures for a long time now, but it’s been only recently that Tommy began drawing and animating them on his school iPad,” Mr Gozdz said. ““My Painted Smile is a short film capturing some of that process.” Mr Gozdz said the story captured how Tommy used art to escape into his own fantastical world. “The film is a result of combining Tommy’s art works and his own reflective writing,” he said.

Yarraville Special Developmental School is in the running to win a $5000 Harvey Norman voucher and DVD library package for the school with the most online votes or one of five $1000 prizes. “Even though we’re confident that the judges will enjoy our film, if our local community gets behind us we have a great chance of winning the most online votes,” Mr Gozdz said. Three men have been caught at Newport boat ramp with 36 undersize snapper. The three Hoppers Crossing men, aged 19, 30 and 46, were stopped by Victorian Fisheries Authority officers after they retrieved their boat on Tuesday night last week. Officers searched their vehicle and found a bucket containing 36 snapper, 27 of which were well undersize. The smallest measured only 19.9 centimetres – the legal minimum is 28 centimetres. The bag limit is 10, of which no more than three fish may be 40 centimetres or more in length. Another snapper was found behind the boat’s fuel tank. Termites move on suburbs Melbourne’s boom in new home builds is being blamed for a reported spike in the number of termites across the city. The pesky pests are said to have been eating more homes as their natural habitats are cleared for a three-bedder with tasty flooring or walls. Building inspectors have reported termites have been particularly active in Footscray, Laverton, Werribee, Williamstown, Carrum Downs, Cranbourne, Pakenham and Frankston. The University of Sydney’s Professor Nathan Lo, from the School of Life and Environmental Sciences, said it was possible more termites were moving into suburban areas, particularly those areas close to cleared forests. Many homes might have been affected by termites a few years ago, with signs they were there only apparent now, he said. Jim’s Building Inspections director Paul Commerford said inspectors had reported a 25 per cent increase in the number of homes showing evidence of termite activity. Buyers and home owners should watch out for the potential warning signs of termites which include: • Any rotting or damp timber on the property; • Hollow sounds or discrepancy in sounds when knocking on timber walls; • Dampness underneath the house; • Old tree stumps in a backyard that show signs of termite activity.

Music left in old guitars By Goya Dmytryshchak A new charity that repairs old guitars is bringing smiles to children’s faces. Guitars Gathering Dust collects unwanted guitars and, with the help of the Hobsons Bay Men’s Shed, repairs and spruces them up before handing them on to children-based music charities. The first batch of 30 guitars on Tuesday was donated to national not-for-profit organisation The Song Room for the Jennings Street School in Laverton, a prep-year 12 school for children

on the autism spectrum. Guitars Gathering Dust was founded by Williamstown’s Craig Watt. “There’s so many old guitars that are probably just lying under the bed or in a garage just gathering dust, so we’re trying to create an awareness campaign,” Mr Watt said. “The Song Room provides a dedicated music resource to the Jennings Street School so we know that the guitars will be well used.” Mr Watt said some of the guitars might need a new neck or bridge – that was where the Men’s Shed came in.

“A lot of times, these instruments end up in hard rubbish collection because people think they’re too damaged and beat up to be of any use … “It’s amazing what you can do with a little bit of knowledge and TLC. “Hopefully we’ll be able to work with The Song Room and the national body of the Men’s Shed to roll out this initiative a little broader.” A number of music stores have jumped on board, helping by donating strings and acting as drop-off points. Four years in the making, a site for the Altona Community Gardens has finally been found. A 340 square metre community garden will be created in Den Dulk Reserve as part of a Hobsons Bay council project to improve the open space opposite the Somers Parade shops. Altona Community Gardens co-founder Peter Weaver said it would hopefully be the first of many communal planting spaces developed around the municipality. “The council’s so behind us,” he said. “They look at this as a pilot for Hobsons Bay – if all done correctly, there will be more. “We’ve got so much available land in Hobsons Bay compared to a lot of other city councils that I’m hoping that a little bit more can become community gardens.”

Altona Community Gardens became incorporated four years ago and has been looking for a public space ever since. “We’re envisaging about 40 [garden] beds,” Mr Weaver said. “About 20 to be available as personal plots and then we’ll keep the other 20 or 25 as community plots, so this will be more strongly based around a community garden. “None of us [founding members] will actually take plots; we’ll leave it for the community because we’ve already got gardens. “Long-term, when we get another site, we can do more and get the schools involved.” The first sod is expected to be turned in spring. Parlour photo snaps up art prize By Benjamin Millar An exploration of colonisation’s impact on identity has collected top honours in the 2019 Footscray Art Prize. Melbourne artist Megan Evans was awarded the $10,000 main prize for her photograph, Parlour, chosen from more than 800 entries Parlour vying for the biennial prize. Judging panel Katrina Sedgwick, Hannah Presley and Raafat Ishak awarded the main prize and selected each of the category winners after spending a full day judging 33 shortlisted works that spanned photography, paintings, video and sculpture. Their judging notes remarked that Evans’ work had left them lost in the “complex storytelling that requires a sustained viewing”. “The responsibility she takes for her history is something deeply embedded in the power of the work,” they noted. Evans, an interdisciplinary artist whose creative life began with large political murals in the 1980s, works in video, photography, sculpture and installation. Louis Theuma’s Manhattan 1952, a re-imagining based on “what ifs” after World War II, was highly commended. The judging panel selected Dogs of the West by Justine McCallister as the winner of the street art category. The artwork showcases portraits of dogs that frequently visit the Martin Reserve dog park in West Footscray, which McCallister visits with her own two dogs. The artwork will be installed on the corner of Irving and Nicholson streets in Footscray and is due to be completed by mid-late July. Club captain Kevin LeNepveu said it was not opposed to development. “We want that site developed, but we don’t want to be looking at an eyesore for the rest of our lives, especially as Williamstown residents,” he said. Commodore Tony Dawson said the club’s objection was based on the scale of the proposed development and that it was out of character with its surroundings in Williamstown. “It’s essentially an industrial building, which probably would be equal to something up in Kororoit Creek Road,” he said. “Our objection has been based on the fact that the rest of the surroundings around here are two storeys high and we think that’s probably more appropriate. “We just don’t think this development is in keeping with Williamstown and the way it should be, particularly the entry to Williamstown.”

The Royal Victorian Motor Yacht Club, on the southern side of the proposed development, has also lodged an objection. Williamstown Marine Centre director Scott O’Hare this week told Star Weekly he was willing to compromise on the appearance of the boundary walls. “At the end of the day, we’re conscious of making sure we try and make the building

Borrack Square Lotto and Gifts owner Jannene Wenzler said she nearly cried when she heard the news. “It’s the fourth division 1 winning entry we’ve sold in the four years since we took ownership of the store,” she said. “We are thrilled they are locals to the area and we want to thank them for supporting our store.” The other three winners in Saturday night’s draw were from Victoria, Queensland and South Australia.

Assaults drive rise in crime stats By Goya Dmytryshchak and Benjamin Millar Crime in Hobsons Bay increased 4.9 per cent in the year to March, data released last week by the Crime Statistics Agency show, with criminal offences rising from 6010 to 6305. Maribyrnong recorded a 1.2 per cent crime rise, from 8092 to 8188 offences, driven by a jump in crimes against the person. The annual crime statistics to the end of March revealed crimes against the person, including homicide, assault, sexual offences, robbery, stalking, harassment and threatening behaviour, blackmail and extortion, abduction

and dangerous and negligent acts, in Hobsons Bay were up from 947 to 1050, including a rise in both family violence and non-family violence assaults. Justice procedures such as breaches of family violence orders and bail conditions jumped from 643 to 976. Public order and security offences rose from 381 to 518, including public nuisance incidents almost doubling from 52 to 103 and weapons and explosives crimes up from 96 to 143. Drug offences, predominantly drug possession, rose from 241 to 350. Acting Inspector for Hobsons Bay and Maribyrnong, Chris Allen said breaches of

family violence orders continued to climb, with a 43.6 per cent increase. “The vast majority of the increase in the number of offences recorded in Hobsons Bay is due to police holding offenders to account for breaches of court orders and bail conditions, with a 51.8 per cent increase in the justice procedures category,” he said. Acting Inspector Allen welcomed a halving of robberies during the same period. “Our successful summer policing operation around our beaches had a big impact.” Maribyrnong recorded a 10.3 per cent jump in crimes against the person, from 959 to 1058. Sexual offences increased by 29 per cent,

rising from 113 to 146. Acting Inspector Allen said people should speak up if they are the victim of a sexual offence. “We have dedicated teams who can investigate these matters with the sensitivity and compassion they deserve,” he said. Acting Inspector Allen said a 14.6 per cent increase in breaches of family violence-related orders reflects police’s zero tolerance approach. Police have also stepped up patrols in high risk locations following an increase in the number of robberies over the past 12 months.Residential burglaries are down by 14.3 per cent.

Laundry theft alarm A thief has stolen two weeks’ takings from a coin laundry in a just over a minute. Newport Laundry owner Stan Tadinac is warning other businesses to lift security after his change machine was broken into. Security footage shows a man entering the laundry at 441 Melbourne Road on June 11 at 5.52pm. He uses a crowbar to pry open the change machine and leaves with the coin and notes boxes. Mr Tadinac said the theft was brazen, carried out during peak hour in busy Melbourne Road. “The person just grabbed it … and was out,” he said. “It’s a professional job, very professional job. “There is a padlock, so they snapped the padlock. “Then they used the crowbar to open the side

of it and then took the whole insides – there were three hoppers. “The money stolen was worth around two weeks of takings. “The change machine is a write-off. “The customers have been affected by not having the change machine and that may have a negative impact on the business.” He hopes someone may remember seeing the man, who was wearing an orange high-vis jacket with the letters ‘URS’ on the back. “It was a stocky man, solid build, only his eyes are visible,” Mr Tadinac said. “He had a hoodie and the jacket is orange … it’s easy to recognise, I’ve never seen the jacket before.” Altona North police are investigating. Every year is year of the pig By Carolyn Webb/The Age When it comes to making salami at home, the Napoli family has some time-honoured rules. One is that it’s hard work, so it’s important to keep up your energy. You do this, between filling casings, by sipping homemade grappa, and nibbling on a delicious procession of prosciutto, provolone, fresh bread and polpette (meatballs). Another must is to tell some old jokes that we can’t print. Elders say the salami should be made after a full moon – it has to do with the optimal cycle of the female pig. All over Melbourne, people of Italian extraction are gathering to carry on this tradition their grandparents brought from the old country, and that’s what 34-year-old Steven Napoli did recently at his Altona Meadows house. Linda Catalano, co-founder of the Melbourne Salami Festa, said for Mr Napoli’s generation, it was a “conscious decision” to keep it going and it was becoming part of Australia’s foodie culture. Non-Italians are among fans of a growing number of salami making courses, she said. Mr Napoli said after his nonno Anthony, 94, and late nonna Maria migrated from Calabria in 1952, they were staunch exponents of the annual salami making, which doubled as family reunion. They would slaughter a pig in the yard of their Williamstown house, and cut down its parts; every part was used – as sausage, ham or used in soups, pasta dishes or blood pudding. Steven remembers that as a child, the day was as exciting as Christmas, but the salami part was a closely guarded secret: the kids were only allowed to tie up the salami ends.

“The biggest thing I remember is that everyone got together,” Steven said. “It was just a family day.” About 15 years ago, the ritual stopped: Anthony and Maria were getting older, and Steven’s father Frank was working hard at the family fruit shop in Williamstown. It was Steven who revived it, five years ago, for his own family – he and wife Kyra now have three children, aged five years old, three years old, and four months.

Steve’s father Frank, 60, is pleased his son is “taking over the tradition from the old generation. And he loves doing it”. On a Monday night Steve mixed the meat to the family recipe including salt, pepper, and capsicum puree to add a red tinge and a sweet flavour. On the Tuesday, for compressing the meat into casings and hanging it, Steven was joined by Frank, his uncle Joe, his cousin Tony Napoli and friend Michael Cini.

Frank and Uncle Joe advised that when stuffing the casings, which are made of lamb intestines, pack them tight, because air pockets can bring mould. Yes, Steven realises he could buy salami at a supermarket but says his is fresher and tastier. “There are no preservatives, and you know what’s gone into it.” Steven looks forward to salami day and hopes his kids will too. “I love it. I absolutely love it.”

Family tells of shooting grief By Benjamin Millar The family of a Maidstone man gunned down in a drive-by shooting has issued a heartfelt plea for his killers to be brought to justice. Richard Arow, 28, was outside Prahran nightclub Love Machine with his girlfriend on April 14 when he was one of a number of people shot from a passing black Porsche SUV. Security guard Aaron Khalid Osmani, 37, died at the scene, while Mr Arow died days later from his injuries.

Police last week released images of a maroon ute they believe was used as a getaway car after the Porsche used in the shooting was torched in Wollert. Mr Arow’s mother, sister, brother and girlfriend last Wednesday spoke of the impact Mr Arow’s death has had on the close-knit family. Sister Achol Arow said the family still finds every day incredibly hard. “We think he will walk through the door with a big smile, but it’s not him,” she told

reporters. “Whoever did this to my brother, he did not deserve it. No one deserves this.” Emmanuel Arow said he would miss his brother’s “huge smile”. Mr Arow’s girlfriend, Rebekah Spinks, said his death has had a “catastrophic” effect on those left behind. She said the pair had been walking with a group of friends before Mr Arow had stopped to say hello to Mr Osmani. “You just don’t imagine something like that, something so instantly tragic, in Melbourne of all places,” she said.

Ms Spinks said the “callous” men behind the killing had no regard for humanity. “They didn’t care who they were hurting and they took the life of a really great man,” she said. “He was the strongest man with the softest heart. Those people … don’t deserve to go home to their families.” Detective Acting Inspector Julian Horan said police were investigating whether the shooting was a revenge attack linked with patrons who had earlier been evicted from the nightclub.

Tipped to be a good read A body has been found. Tippy’s moment has arrived. Tippy Chan, 11, is growing up in a quiet town in New Zealand’s south, obsessed with her uncle’s old Nancy Drew books. The young mystery-solver is the creation of Footscray author Rob McDonald, coming to life in his debut novel The Nancys. McDonald said the idea first came to him more than a decade ago but he has finally set the story to the page. He submitted his first draft to the 2017 Victorian Premier’s Literary Awards, where it was highly commended in the Unpublished Manuscript category. From there it came to the attention of Allen & Unwin, which this month published the novel. “I had done an online script-writing course and had done the first draft of a film script, but when it came to The Nancys I decided I wanted to try to do this as a novel,” he said.

The Nancys traces the story of Tippy, who wants to be just like Nancy Drew and solve a real mystery. When her teacher’s body is found beside the only traffic light in the fictitious town of Riverstone, she joins with her uncle and his partner to form a secret amateur detective club and solve the crime. McDonald, who originally hails from New Zealand, drew upon his memories of growing up to help create Riverstone. Raising two daughters has also provided some useful insight into what challenges and experiences Tippy would be facing in her life. “I was very conscious not to plagiarise their childhood, but it has been helpful in thinking whether kids would say this or do that.” The Nancys by R.W.R. Artists pool their talents When toxic run-off from last year’s Tottenham warehouse fire flooded nearby Stony Creek, it quickly flowed out to the bay, destroying virtually all life in its path. As life slowly returns to the creek, two western suburbs artists are hoping to trace the path to recovery and bring the community along on the journey. Footscray animator Christie Widiarto and Sunshine visual artist Ana Rita Pires have partnered to develop a new project called Flow, an immersive multimedia collaboration Flow celebrating the waterways of the west. Pires said the final project, to be unveiled during November’s Due West Festival in the Creative Containers along the Maribyrnong River, will feature a projected animated mural

and soundscape, as well as an interactive activation exploring the flow theme. “There is still a lot of community concern about the impact of this fire and its effect on Stony Creek,” she said. “These waterways are such important places in the community, a place for people to spend time with their friends and their families, and art is such a great way to get people thinking and talking about what it means to them.” An Australian Cultural Fund fundraising page has been set up to assist the project, with donations closing soon. I live three blocks from where the Yarra river kisses the ocean and whispers to Antartica. Seven years ago, I moved from Canada, an Iroquois word that means village. I grew up by the Great Lakes and wanted to live near big water. It soothes my soul. What do you like about Newport? No sleet, no slush, no snow! Five Kulin nation language groups have shared stories that matter for tens of thousands of years here. It makes sense writers from Ada Cambridge in the early 1900s to today’s stars, like the wondrous treehouse storyteller Andy Griffiths, call Hobsons Bay home. What could be improved? We think we can’t solve the big problems, so we don’t do small things. Relationships begin by asking someone’s name and what matters to them. Whether it’s the person sitting on cold concrete begging outside of Coles, or your neighbour, if we take the time to connect, kindness is sure to follow. I listen to local Indigenous elders. They ask newcomers to promise to care for the land, its creatures and children. I respect their teachings because we need ancient wisdom in our modern world. That means I reached out to

the seven streets around my house and started co-ordinating events like planting edible gardens on the verge, hosting street dinners, Clean-up Australia Days and an annual neighbourhood holiday party in the park. Sustainability focus strong in Melbourne’s west There are few challenges more important than meeting Australia’s growing demand for energy while reducing local environmental impacts. This is something that the teams at Mobil Altona Refinery and Yarraville Terminal focus on at all times, not only through day-to-day operations but through their work in the wider community. Mobil’s commitment to environmental responsibility goes beyond compliance with regulatory requirements. “We take considerable steps to minimise the environmental footprint of our own operations and we are an active contributor to a range of organisations that conduct important environmental research, conservation and education programs,” explained Altona Refinery Manager Riccardo Cavallo. For several years now, the Altona Refinery team have been working closely with Conservation Volunteers Australia (CVA) to assist them in supporting the natural habitats of local animals and plants in the local area. In June 2019, the refinery’s annual Day of Caring built on previous years when the team returned to Point Gellibrand Coastal Heritage Park in Williamstown to plant new trees in the area. “At our 2018 Day of Caring, we cleared a massive amount of weeds in this area to make room for more environmentally friendly foliage. It was great to return to the same site this year and continue this progress,” Riccardo said. “In recent years, we have also partnered with CVA to deliver the Victorian Wetland Care Program, which provides the local community with opportunities to volunteer and learn about significant wetland sites at Jawbone Flora & Fauna Reserve in Williamstown. “The local environment will always be a priority for the team at Mobil,” concluded Riccardo.

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir finds a slice of heaven in Keilor Park We are delighted to herald the arrival of new Greek baking emporium on the smallish shopping strip on Fosters Road in Keilor Park. Theo’s has all your sweet Greek dreams covered at great prices. Parking is no problem. And it’s simply a cool place to be. We suspect most customers treat it as a shop, taking their goodies home. But for eating-in purposes, the place is set up in simple cafe style. Theo’s is very much about the sweeter side of life, but there are limited savoury options available. We love our slices of spanakopita ($6). Rich and flavoursome in a home-style way, they eat bigger than they look. And at a place in which we would’ve been unsurprised about being presented with plastic plates and implements, we are very happy to have our lunch accompanied by real-deal unplastic gear, along with water. For dessert, Bennie opts for a profiterol creation ($5). He enjoys it, but perhaps not as much as he’d been hoping – likely because the chocolate is not the dark, more bitter kind he likes these days. He plainly envies my politiko ($5). And in that he’s right on the money – as this is superb. It’s bit like a heftier Greek version of tiramisu, the base of syrupy semolina cake topped by a layer of cream and plenty of powdered coffee. It is wonderful – and so healthy, too!

SPORT Young Falcons stand up in championship level City West Falcons are the hottest team going around in western suburbs sport. Winning has become an addiction for the Falcons, with their record reading 13-0 in the Victorian Netball League championship division. The top-of-the-ladder Falcons won a heart-stopper 51-49 win over Southern Saints at the State Netball and Hockey Centre on Wednesday night. No matter what team Falcons coach Marg Lind sends out – this one was full of youth due to the unavailablilty of three stars through representative duty – they are getting the job done. Lind was pleased to come away with a victory from a game that could have gone either way. “We had a very small window where we got a few goals up in the last quarter,” she said.

“Other than that, it was pretty much goal-for-goal the whole game. “We were happy to get the win because we didn’t have Molly [Jovic], Jini [Tharjini Sivalingam] or Jane [Cook]. “We pretty much had our younger players on the court and I thought they did well to hold up under consistent pressure from Saints. They’re in pretty good form at the moment.” The main area of concern for City West heading into the game was the attacking circle. Cook and Sivalingam have been prolific goal scorers for the Falcons this season. Enter Uneeq Palavi, a young goaler who shone brightly in her first start. After shrugging off some initial nerves, Palavi finished with 49 at 88 per cent conversion. “That’s her first full game run for us in champ, so that was a really good sign,” Lind said.

“She probably tried to do too much early in the game … in the second half she settled into the role well and started to really perform.” When the game was there to be won, it was at the other end of the court that City West gained its advantage, with a five-minute period in the fourth quarter turning the game in the Falcons’ favour. The game changer for the Falcons was goal keeper Sarah Szczykulski, who was able to break up play with solid defence and be a motivator with her voice. “She had a five-minute patch where she got a bit more aggressive and was up and about talking to the others and being really positive,” Lind said. City West had to call on teenager Mel Oloamanu to play an important role at goal defence. Oloamanu replaced Zoe Davies, who

received a knock to her nose. “She did really well for her first run in championship,” said Lind of Oloamanu. “She’s a good up-and-comer.” City West has opened a two-and-a-half game lead over the rest of the competition. Lind believes victories such as the one over Southern Saints are worth more than just premiership points. “Games like that are a real test of our culture,” she said. “It’s a really good window into what we’ve got to look forward to, but it’s also a window into what our vulnerabilities are. “The big positive for the club is we know the young ones have got the capacity now.” City West faces Melbourne University Lightning at SNHC on June 26. Lacrosse comeback joy By Lance Jenkinson From 18 months on the sidelines with an injury to tournament MVP of the national championships, Newport Ladies Lacrosse Club star Hayley Sofarnos has completed a remarkable turnaround. Her playing career was put on hold after she sustained a serious knee injury. It was the second time Sofarnos had injured her ACL, so she knew all about the tough road back she faced. Unlike the first time she injured her knee, Sofarnos did not rush back and made sure it was 100 per cent ready before getting back into the heat of battle. The extended time in rehabilitation worked a charm as she did not miss a beat in leading Victoria to a national title. “I was unfortunately well versed on it and kind of knew what to expect,” Sofarnos said. “I also took the prescribed amount of time to recover.

“Last time, I think I returned in five months after the surgery. This time I gave myself a solid 18 months and that definitely made a difference.” After a handful of games for Newport in the state league, Sofarnos was happy just to be part of the Victorian set-up again. Never could she have imagined her play, so soon after a lengthy lay off, would translate into MVP form at the championships, played in Melbourne. What’s more, the 28-year-old came through five games in as many days with no dramas, so she can move forward with confidence. “It was a long 18 months – it felt like forever,” Sofarnos said. “I was just happy to be back out there to be honest. That was my first tournament back, so it was very surprising [to take out the MVP], but a nice surprise. I don’t notice the knee so much from a stability standpoint.” The results at the nationals justified the decision not to rush back. “It’s one thing to be injured and recovering

from the injury, but you’ve obviously had an extended period out and you’ve got to get back to fitness, get back to form and all those things,” she said. “The fitness people, osteo and physios have done their jobs. Now I’m just having so much fun [being back on the field], I’m just like a kid again.” Sofarnos played a significant role for Victoria. She was vice-captain and key attacker in a quarter-back style role behind the net, setting up play for her teammates en route to a tournament high in assists. “I kind of had the easy role of just throwing it into space and knowing that one of my teammates would catch it,” Sofarnos said. “When you’re in a team of superstars like we were this year, it makes it a lot easier.” Sofarnos scored two goals and had four assists in Victoria’s 16-5 win over South Australia in the championship game. The grand final MVP award went to Footscray’s Sarah Mollison, who fired in four goals.

Williamstown will head into its Victorian Football League bye round this weekend on cloud nine after securing an eight-point win over western suburbs rivals Werribee at Avalon Airport Oval on Sunday. The Seagulls made a flying start to the game with a six-goal-to-two opening term to set up their win. Andrew Collins’ Seagulls were challenged late in the game. A lead that blew out to as much as 37 points in the third quarter got whittled down to just two, but Williamstown never relinquished the advantage it worked so hard to build. Williamstown’s most experienced players came to fore with Leigh Masters, Mitch Hibberd, Joel Tippett, Willie Wheeler and Jake Greiser among the better players. Ruckman Nick Meese was influential at the stoppages for the Seagulls with 64 hit outs and seven tackles. Nick Rodda, Sam Dunell and Wheeler kicked two goals apiece for Williamstown. Williamstown has moved up to third on the ladder with seven wins and a draw from 11 games. The Seagulls will return to the field on July 6 for an all-standalone affair with Frankston at Downer Oval. Meanwhile, Footscray suffered an upset 23-point loss to Collingwood at the VU Whitten Oval on Sunday. In the NAB League, Western Jets have leapt into the top four after grinding out a seven-point win over Greater Western Victoria Rebels on the road at Mars Stadium on Saturday. You can only stretch your playing roster so far and Altona Magic was at breaking point. The Magic so desperately wanted to appear on the national stage among the FFA Cup’s last 32 teams, but injuries and inexperience forbade it from doing so. The cup run came to a sad end for the Magic with a lifeless 1-0 defeat to Moreland Zebras at Paisley Park on Wednesday night. Magic coach Goran Lozanovski was hurting after the loss, knowing his side got so close to a potential drawing of an A-League club, that would bring the riches and the spotlight on the club. “It was disappointing,” he said. “We wanted to win and get through to the next stage, but unfortunately that didn’t happen. “We gave it our best crack but it didn’t pan out.” Altona’s line-up was hampered two-fold. The Magic had endured a tough run of

injuries to key players, robbing the side of some experience and quality. A dip in the transfer market to ease the pain did not help the Magic in the FFA Cup as those players were cup-tied to their former clubs and unable to represent the Magic. Lozanovski had to call up some players from the youth side. “We had six of the under-20 boys in the team and two of them started,” he said. “They were a little bit shaky in their first experience playing senior football.” Altona went a goal down in the 73rd minute after a long range strike from Moreland’s Thomas Barforosh was spilt by Magic goalkeeper Shane Viitakangas and dribbled across the line. The Magic produced their best football following the goal and had a great call for a penalty late on which was controversially waved away by the referee. Robert Stambolziev’s strike appeared to be blocked by the out-stretched hands of a Moreland defender, but play-on was called.

“It was hard for me to see it from the bench, but you could hear a noise that it slapped the hand and it was quite obvious,” Lozanovski said. “After the game and seeing the video that it hit his hand, he’s stopped it from going towards the target.” If there is a blessing in disguise for Altona, it can now focus on its NPL campaign, which has looked shaky in recent weeks. A 1-0 loss to Oakleigh Cannons at Jack Edwards Reserve on Sunday was the Magic’s third loss in the league in the past four matches. “Right now, we’re trying to resurrect our league season and try and get on a bit of a run and get into the top six,” Lozanovski said. “If we can play finals at the end of the year, I think it’s been a great success for us.” The Magic has freshened up the squad with the transfer window additions of former Sydney FC youth playmaker Hassan Jalloh, former Australian youth international defender Dane Milovanovic and defender Kwabena Boahene, signed from the lower leagues.

Roosters scramble for victory West Footscray produced a gutsy 18-point win on the road over Newport at Langshaw Reserve to move away from the cellar in the Western Region Football League division 2. The Roosters overcame their own inaccurate kicking for goal and withstood a late charge from Newport to secure their second win of the season. A three-goal to nil fourth quarter was enough for the Shane Lucas-coached Roosters to claim the points. David Ismail was huge for West Footscray, kicking four goals in a low-scoring affair. Joshua Barker and Tobi Bray continued their strong form to be named best for the Roosters. Darcy McCallum, the Roosters’ leading goalkicker with 28 majors, booted three. McCallum is second only on the goalkickers list to Parkside forward Brent Kelly, who has 35 goals. Kelly was once again the focal point for Parkside in a 39-point victory over North Footscray at Hansen Reserve. The mid-sized forward snared four of the Magpies 11 goals.

Thomas Black chimed in with three, while Drew Vincent was named best-afield. Parkside has moved up to third on the ladder with six wins from nine starts. Yarraville Seddon won the second tier match of the day by 42 points over Point Cook Centrals at Featherbrook Reserve. The Eagles have made it six wins in succession after a shaky start to the season. Jesse Varsamakis kicked four goals for the Eagles, while Andrejs Everitt added three. In division 1, Altona was upset by 10 points on home soil by St Albans at Grant Reserve. The Vikings had no answer to St Albans forward Benjamin Said, who snared five goals. Spotswood is lurking in the shadows of top spot after a 58-point win over Caroline Springs at Town Centre Oval. After a six-goal-to-zip opening stanza, the Woodsmen did it comfortably. The Woodsmen had nine individual goalkickers, including two each to Charlie Nastasi, Charles Bettiol, Steven O’Bryan, Toby Kopa and Mitchell Coleman.

In other games, Werribee Districts handed Sunshine a 10-goal belting, Hoppers Crossing thrashed Albion by 119 points and Deer Park steamrolled Point Cook by 126 points. In division 3, Braybrook enjoyed a 74-point win over Wyndham Suns at Pennell Reserve. Despite the win, the Brookers fell down one spot in the standings on percentage. Laverton could only manage four goals in an 81-point loss to Tarneit at Laverton Park Reserve. Meanwhile, Williamstown CYMS made it 10 wins from 10 starts in the Victorian Amateur Football Association Premier C. The Mathew Montebello-coached CYs worked hard for a 22-point win over Old Mentonians at Keysborough Playing Fields. Yuma Hemphill kicked two goals in a best-on-ground performance for CYs, while Jacob Wheelahan was a focal point with four. The CYs are three games clear on top of the ladder. Lance Jenkinson

Laverton has moved out of the bottom three in the Football Victoria men’s state league 4 west soccer with a 2-0 victory over Spring Hills at Laverton Park Reserve on Saturday. The Reds have shown improved performances in the past month and saw this match against a side near them on the ladder as a real chance to reap maximum points. Michael Nguyen and Marcelo De La Plaza gave Laverton the springboard it needed. Nguyen scored in the first half to give the Reds a one-goal advantage at half-time, while De La Plaza netted in the second. Altona North maintained its two-point break at the top of the ladder on the back of a 2-1 win over Melbourne University at Princes Park Oval. In men’s state league 1, Altona City ended its three-game losing streak with a pressure-relieving 3-1 victory over Essendon Royals at Ormond Park. Yarraville’s up-and-down form took a turn for the worse when it went down 2-0 to Brimbank Stallions at McIvor Reserve. Altona East Phoenix’s clash with Mill Park in men’s state league 2 was postponed. Williamstown had a commanding 3-0 win over Fawkner in men’s state league 3. In the women’s leagues, bottom-ofthe-ladder Maribyrnong Swifts Silvers at least put up a fight in a 2-1 loss to top four side St Albans Saints in state league 2. After two straight losses in state league 3, Altona Magic claimed a much-needed point in a 2-2 draw with Brunswick City.
