Baklava boy back in town

Altona’s ‘Fresh Prince of Baklava’ is back home cooking up a storm after his elimination from MasterChef Australia last week. Walleed Rasheed was among 24 amateur cooks chosen for Ten’s reality cooking show, serving up plates for judges Matt Preston, Gary Mehigan and George Calombaris. His business, Fresh Prince of Baklava, trades from Kensington and South Melbourne markets and he plans to expand. Mr Rasheed, who featured in 31 episodes, said he loved every single minute of his television experience. “The most challenging part of the whole show was to think on your feet and to be able to cook ... while you’ve got a massive clock above you, you’ve got people shouting and you’ve got producers asking you a question. “I knew I could cook – I love food – but it really tested your ability to cook under those pressures.” Born in Melbourne to Egyptian parents, the father of twin five-year-old daughters said he now hoped to expand his Fresh Prince of Baklava business, which he has run as a side hustle to his corporate job. “We don’t really have a shopfront, which is obviously in our longer plan but we usually do markets around Melbourne,” Mr Rasheed said. ‘We got it wrong’: council Footscray parking meters will remain switched off indefinitely after a fierce public backlash to Maribyrnong council’s decision to reactivate the machines. Star Weekly last week reported that paid parking was due to be reintroduced to central Footscray from June 24 after occupancy rates in the precinct were found to exceed 85 per cent, triggering the return of parking fees for the first time since 2015. But the decision sparked anger among some Footscray traders and heavy criticism

on social media, prompting a backdown that was announced at last Tuesday night’s council meeting. Council chief executive Stephen Wall conceded at the meeting the volume of negative feedback showed that the council “could have done better”. “Officers sincerely believed that the right stakeholders had been communicated with and the right messaging was out there,” he said. “Clearly we’ve got that wrong because we’re certainly hearing about that today. “It is proposed to delay any further implementation of the paid parking in

Footscray until further notice. “We thought that the community was on the journey with us, clearly we have got some more work to do.” The Footscray Traders Association supports parking fees returning, but the Footscray Asian Business Association has lodged a 200-signature petition against their return, arguing it had not been adequately consulted. FABA president Wing La asked the council meeting why the meters would be activated in Footscray and not Yarraville. Council planning director Nigel Higgins told Star Weekly that consultation to develop the

Chaouk jailed 24 years for murder By Tom Cowie/The Age Crime family figure Ali Chaouk has been jailed for 24 years for murdering a member of a rival clan, almost a decade after the shooting. Chaouk was found guilty by a jury of shooting 28-year-old Mohammed Haddara five times in Altona North on June 20, 2009. Appearing via video link, Chaouk indicated his intention to appeal the Supreme Court’s decision. “I don’t accept the verdict, it’s unsafe. I’m appealing the decision. It’s a miscarriage of justice and it was a big shock to everyone,” he

said, before he was asked by Justice Kevin Bell to remain quiet. Chaouk was jailed seven years after his one-time associate, Ahmed Hablas, was acquitted of Mr Haddara’s murder. Hablas confessed to the murder in the weeks after the shooting, but recanted after he was charged with murder in 2010. He was acquitted at a trial the following year and later became a prosecution witness against Chaouk. Chaouk’s intimidation of Hablas into taking the rap for his crime was an aggravating factor in his sentencing, Justice Bell said. The court heard about Chaouk’s extensive

criminal record mostly for drug offences, which had resulted in him shooting Mr Haddara in the one year he had not spent in prison in the past 14 years. “This is a bad record and it stands against you in this case,” said Justice Bell. Chaouk pleaded not guilty to murder and argued there was a reasonable prospect Hablas was the shooter. “While you still now maintain your innocence, as is your right, the jury found that the shooter was you,” Justice Bell said. The Chaouk family had engaged in “intergenerational violence” towards others,

Justice Bell said, as well as drug dealing and crime. Chaouk’s brother, Mohammed, was shot dead by police during a raid in 2005, while his father was killed in 2010. Despite the seriousness of the crime and the absence of any expressed remorse, Justice Bell said he did not consider that Chaouk was completely beyond redemption. “Although I must be guarded about the prospects for your ultimate rehabilitation,” he said. Justice Bell jailed Chaouk for 24 years, with a non-parole period of 18 years.

Connie’s loved a life by the beach Constance “Connie” Joel has enjoyed a century of Williamstown. Mrs Joel will celebrate her 100th birthday on Wednesday, June 25. Born and raised in Williamstown, she was brought up in Gellibrand Street, where she lived until she was married. “We lived quite near the beach,” she said. “My father used to say, ‘Don’t come home if you drown’ … the beach was our playground.” Mrs Joel attended the only primary school in town at the time – Williamstown State School – before becoming one of the first students at

For the past 25 years, Mrs Joel has been a weekly regular at U3A Hobsons Bay-Williamstown, where she is the oldest art student. Her paintings adorn all the walls of her bedroom. Authorities are investigating after an ugly brawl erupted among spectators at the Altona Magic and Dandenong Thunder soccer match in Altona North on Saturday night. Footage shows men spitting on Altona players after they scored a goal and a fight ensuing that involved dozens of people in the crowd. Football Victoria live streams National Premier League games, but the scenes at this match caused the game to be taken off line. About 10 minutes before the end of the match, as the home side scores a goal to bring the score to 3-2, the footage shows a scuffle breaking out behind the Altona Magic bench. An official commentator can be heard criticising spectators. “This is not good enough behaviour from them, really disgraceful scenes here on these far sides: spitting on players and throwing water bottles,” the commentator says. A referee halts play and security intervenes. Police are investigating. Police believe between 15-20 men who came from Sunshine to watch the match were involved. Two men from Werribee, believed to be related, sustained minor bruising. Altona Magic Soccer Club secretary Nick Taseski declined to comment. Dandenong Thunder Soccer Club was also contacted for comment. In a statement released on Monday, Football Victoria said it strongly condemned anti-social behaviour and it was investigating the incident.

Yoga poses new options By Goya Dmytryshchak A private business is asking Hobsons Bay council to let it build a $1.3 million yoga and wellness centre on public land in Williamstown in return for the longest lease possible. Saltwater Studios director Eva Buman is proposing to finance the centre, which would include a 25-metre pool, on the site of the disused women’s bowls club at Dennis Reserve. “The idea is that they [the council] own the land and the building, and us paying for the building would be like paying rent forward,” she said. “We just know that the community really needs this, they really want it, and we just want to make it happen for them. “A few people have to said to us, ‘But you’re a business’, and my response is always, ‘Well, not all businesses are just about money’. “I’m fourth-generation Williamstown girl and I really care about the community here.” Ms Buman said she would “love” a 99-year lease. “We’d be looking for more than just a 20 year lease – I don’t think 20 years is very long,” she said. “This is my life’s work. This is what I want to do until I die.” As reported by Star Weekly, the council has adopted a master plan for Dennis Reserve, ending a long-running dispute between those who wanted more tennis courts and advocates for open space. The plan includes demolishing the former bowling green and pavilion, Williamstown Central Tennis Club pavilion and two existing courts, and construction of four new courts and a central open-space area. Mayor Jonathon Marsden said work was due to start within the next 12 months.

“Council has not previously leased out land to private businesses for the construction of their own recreational facility,” he said. “We do, however, have a very successful track record of leasing out our own leisure facilities to private enterprises to operate and maintain.

“This is the arrangement we have with Bayfit Leisure Centre, Altona Badminton Association and South Pacific Health Club Williamstown.” Saltwater’s proposal is among 37 budget submissions under consideration until the 2019-20 budget is adopted on June 25.

Budget wish list submitted Support for the arts, more money to tackle climate change and a cut to spending on consultants are just some of the suggestions made to Maribyrnong council as it finalises its next 12-month budget. The council recently released draft versions of its proposed budget, strategic resource plan and change of rating system, receiving 29 submissions in response. Submissions ranged from calls for better lighting and construction of a promised footbridge over Stony Creek, to help to upgrade cricket facilities at Shorten Reserve and renovating the Yarraville-Footscray Bowling Club. Western suburbs arts organisations including Footscray Community Arts Centre, Western Edge Youth Arts, L2R Dance and the Women’s Circus all sought help, while the Maribyrnong Climate Action Group called on the council to allocate more funding to reducing carbon emissions and tackling the climate change emergency. The proposed 2019-20 budget of $158 million has earmarked $61.2 million for capital and improvement works. The council plans to change its rating system and increase overall rates by an average 2.5 per cent in 2019-20 in line with the cap imposed by the state government. Tourism program starts at home By Goya Dmytryshchak People are being urged to discover their own backyard as Hobsons Bay council adopts a strategy to promote tourism for the next five years. The council’s Experience Hobsons Bay Tourism Strategy 2019-24 was developed with tourism operators and volunteers at the Hobsons Bay Visitor Information Centre. Hobsons Bay councillor Colleen Gates said tourism supported about 1400 local jobs and generated about $294 million annually into the local economy.

“I encourage residents to discover the hidden jewels from one end of the municipality to the other,” she said. “There is something for everyone, including maritime and heritage options in Williamstown, Scienceworks in Spotswood, RAMSAR wetlands in Altona Meadows and everything else in between,” she said. “People may be surprised to find out there are things to do and places to explore in Hobsons Bay that they may not realise exist so close by.” In Altona Meadows, people can climb the 100 Steps of Federation for a 360-degree view of the bay, city and the Cheetham Wetlands.

A-mazing experience A giant Pac-Man maze for adults and children is coming to Williamstown for its only Victorian appearance in August. Based on the arcade game released in the 1980s, Pac Maze is an inflatable pixelated world where people can dodge ghosts and grab fruit to be the ultimate winner. Pac Maze will be launched at a sold-out Brisbane event before coming to Sydney and finally Melbourne for its final Australian appearance at Seaworks. Due to one date already selling out at Seaworks, an extra day has been added on Friday, August 23. Viral Ventures’ Charlie Haggarty said the maze was an exact copy of the arcade game. “We’ve got a custom-built inflatable maze, which matches the schematics of the Pac-Man game, so it’s a life-size version,” she said.

Flemings Pool fix all set By Goya Dmytryshchak A $2 million upgrade of Altona foreshore is expected to be completed by summer, signalling an end to a two-year Flemings Pool saga. Flemings Pool, at the end of Millers Road, is named after the Fleming family that, in 1915, removed rocks to create a swimming hole. As first reported by Star Weekly in 2017, Altona beachgoers criticised the council for leaving the popular swimming spot full of rocks and without sand after drainage works. Last August, Star Weekly revealed council plans for a tiered seating area at Flemings Pool that was met with community disapproval. Originally intended to be built by last summer, the plan was amended to a scaled-back version to be built this year. Hobsons Bay council last week voted to award a contract for the foreshore upgrade to Maca Infrastructure, including works at the end of Millers Road and Bent Street. Cheryl Gardner, granddaughter of one of the pool’s creators, Lawrence Fleming, said last week she was pleased at the final design for Flemings Pool. It will have a new ramp and steps to the west to increase the beach area. The seawall will be raised to protect the Esplanade from flooding. Councillor Sandra Wilson told last week’s council meeting that knowing how loved the beach was, it was important to get it right. “When the contractors go in, as they did with Flemings Pool a couple years ago, there was a lot of concern about the movement of rocks and leaving behind rubble,” she said. “I would just like to be certain, with the awarding of this contract, that the contractors are aware of the significance and that they’re very tidy and diligent in their approach.”

New hospital a step closer The search is under way for a building consortium to design and construct a new $1.5 billion hospital in Footscray. Health Minister Jenny Mikakos announced on Monday that expressions of interest will open this week to design, construct, finance and maintain the new 504-bed hospital as part of a public private partnership with the state government. To be built on the corner of Geelong and Ballarat roads, the new hospital is expected to be able to cater for an extra 20,000 emergency department admissions and 15,000 additional patients each year. Ms Mikakos also revealed the list of locals who will sit on a community consultative committee that will be chaired by Footscray MP Katie Hall. Construction is due to begin within two years and up to 2000 jobs are expected to be created during the works. The current 290-bed Footscray Hospital will remain operational until the new hospital opens in 2025.

Irene Chatfield was the passionate fan who was the public face of the 1989 Footscray Fightback, helping the club to fend off a forced merger with the Fitzroy Lions. Crippling debt had pushed the club to the brink of a merger or extinction, but neither option would do for the die-hards.

Watching her beloved Bulldogs train on Tuesday morning, Ms Chatfield said she never once imagined life without them as a stand-alone team. “Even when I walked out of court, I never doubted it at all,” she said of legal proceedings that provided a stay of execution. “All of the supporters stood up when it counted – it’s the passion of the fans. We have always been the underdogs and have never given up.” And stand up they did – more than 10,000 people attended a rally at the Western Oval on October 8, 1989 forging a fightback that raised more than $1.6 million within three weeks. Three decades on, the Western Bulldogs are commemorating the most significant period in the history of the red, white and blue. The round 17 AFL game against Melbourne on July 14 will be the Fightback Round. Players will don Fightback guernseys and the Footscray-Casey Demons VFL game will

Fines, jail raised for ‘death traps’ By Benjamin Millar Rogue operators who flout dangerous goods laws will face up to 10 years in jail under beefed up legislation to be introduced in the wake of the toxic Tottenham fire. Firefighters earlier this year called for tougher penalties against people illegally stockpiling toxic chemical waste such as that which fuelled the blaze that tore through a Tottenham warehouse last August. The United Firefighters Union wrote to Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews in April calling for laws to protect emergency services

workers and communities from toxic “death traps”. Workplace Safety Minister Jill Hennessy announced on Friday that a new “reckless conduct” offence would be introduced through a proposed Dangerous Goods Amendment (Penalty Reform) Bill 2019. Operators could be jailed for up to 10 years for the manufacture, storage, transport, transfer, sale or use of dangerous goods that place a person in danger of death. Companies that engage in reckless conduct that put people at risk of death will face fines of up to $6.4 million.

The proposed bill will increase existing penalties for failing to comply with the Dangerous Goods Act, with potential fines for companies endangering health and safety almost quadrupling from $806,000 to $3.2 million. Ms Hennessy said the new laws would ensure penalties reflected the seriousness of dangerous actions that threaten workers, communities and first responders. “Anyone manufacturing, storing, transporting, transferring, selling or using dangerous goods has a duty to keep their workers, the community and the environment

safe and these tough new penalties make that very clear,” she said. United Firefighters Union branch secretary Peter Marshall said the changes would help protect firefighters, who already had one of the most dangerous jobs in the community. “Illegal dumpers create toxic time bombs that make an already dangerous job unacceptably more dangerous,” he said. “Aside from the exposure to toxic chemicals, not knowing what is in those illegal warehouses is like trying to fight a fire with one arm tied behind your back – it’s unsafe for the firefighters and for the community.”

Festival director Michael Stewart, founder of the Newport Fiddle and Folk Club, said the three-day festival, the 12th, would feature everything from poetry to theatre to classical music. “One of the strengths of the festival is that we have a lot of workshops,” he said. “Anybody who wants to can come along with a guitar or violin to things they want to join in … that’s one of the big attractions. “There’s a Celtic session, there’s a blues session. We have a beginners’ jam. “This year, one of the main attractions is that the Slow Food Farmers’ Market is going to be at the festival on the Saturday – that is a big win. “We’ve got a huge community line-dancing show … most importantly, we’ve actually got the Vietnamese society and a couple of other

cultural groups who are going to come along and join us.” Festival guests will include Stewart’s own band, the Newport Gypsy Djangos, guitarists Jordan Brodie and Nick Charles, Scottish and Irish band The BordererS, Orkeztra Glasso Bashalde, Melbourne Singers of Gospel and Footscray Gypsy Orchestra. The festival will run from June 28-30 at various locations in and around Newport, including Market Street. Held at White Night Receptions on Sunday, pageant contestants included a scientist who specialises in environmental research and volunteers in marine conservation; a young doctor who battled for 11 years to gain

Australian citizenship; and a woman who cares for her sister who suffers from multiple mental and intellectual disorders. Australia’s outgoing Governor-General has visited a Footscray youth service as one of his final official duties. A badminton prodigy Young Tarneit resident Shrey says that winning a national badminton title is like “being on top of the world”. Shrey, 11, played his way to becoming national under-13 singles badminton champion at a tournament in Altona earlier this year. But that success is just one of many he has notched up. Earlier this month, he came first in the under-13 singles and doubles at the state titles in Ballarat. And last year, Shrey came first in the same two categories at the New South Wales Winter Junior Grand Prix. “Playing in competitions is fun – I like playing with my friends,” Shrey said. Shrey said he took up badminton because his father, Gaurav, is a player. He is hoping to become a professional badminton player and compete at the Olympic Games. He trains three days a week at the Altona

Badminton Centre, home of the Western Suburbs Badminton Association, and also plays for the Badminton Academy of Victoria. Ten-minute train timetable push By Alesha Capone A Greens MP has called for Melbourne’s metropolitan trains and trams to run at least every 10 minutes between 6am and 9pm daily. Prahran MP Sam Hibbins raised the issue in state Parliament earlier this month, saying the “turn-up-and-go” system could be implemented using existing rail infrastructure, including that in Wyndham. Mr Hibbins said the proposal, which was a Greens policy at the last election, had been costed by the Parliamentary Budget Office, which found that 10-minute services could be implemented on Melbourne’s train lines for $160 million a year and for $40 million a year on the tram network. “Some experts have thought that figure could actually be brought down quite substantially, and it is next to nothing against one of the government’s mega-toll roads like the North East Link,” Mr Hibbins said. He said that the 10-minute system could be implemented on lines where commuters sometimes have to wait up to 20 minutes between trains, including Werribee, Upfield, Mernda and Craigieburn. The state government was contacted for comment. Meanwhile, buses will replace trains on the Werribee line between 8.20pm on Saturday, June 22, to the last train on Sunday, June 23, due to works. Public Transport Victoria has warned that journey times may increase by up to 40 minutes. Train replacement bus stops will be located in Altair Street, Williams Landing; the bus interchange in the Hoppers Crossing station carpark; and the bus interchange in front of Werribee station, near Manly Street. Inside Fruit2Work’s factory, a group of workers in high-vis vests chat and laugh with each other while they pack fruit into cardboard boxes and load vans. The Laverton North site looks like any other workplace, but Fruit2Work is a social enterprise run by youth charity Whitelion, which gives people who have served time in jail a chance to gain work experience and skills through employment. Fruit2Work’s operations manager Simon Fenech said the organisation was the only one of its type in the world – that is, a social enterprise run entirely by people who have spent time in jail. “It’s not just a job, it’s a purpose,” Mr Fenech said. “Any employer, once they know you’ve got a criminal record, the door is closed – whereas Fruit2Work is about making opportunities and a second chance.” Mr Fenech said Fruit2Work started two-and-a-half years ago as “two guys in the back of a station wagon selling 40 boxes of fruit a week”. “We now employ 14 people, have six vehicles and our own factory and sell approximately 800 to 1000 boxes of fruit per week, and 5000 litres of milk,” he said. “In 2.5 years … people are saying it’s absolutely life-changing.” Details: www.fruit2work.com.au Alesha Capone

Body work in Brooklyn Pupils at Annunciation Primary School in Brooklyn have received a visit from Melbourne University medical students to learn about the human body and staying healthy. In 2016, a small team of university students established a not-for-profit organisation called ASHA Lectures to work with primary and secondary students across Victoria, especially those who may be at a disadvantage in terms of access to resources and opportunities. ASHA Lectures co-president Krisha Changrani said the session with year 5 and 6 pupils at Annunciation had been part of the Bodyworks series dedicated to learning all about the heart. “The whole point of it is to get them really interested about taking care of their health,

understanding the human body and … science in general,” she said. “We do try to make these sessions really interactive, so at Annunciation we got stethoscopes out for the kids to listen to each other’s hearts; using blood pressure monitors.” ASHA Lectures has 30 volunteers delivering sessions for VCE students and Speak Up debating workshops in addition to the Bodyworks series. MY PLACE John Saggers has been involved with the Yarraville Racing Pigeon Club for almost 60 years. He speaks with Benjamin Millar. What’s your connection with Yarraville?

What’s involved as a pigeon racer?

I have always lived in Yarraville, the loft I’m using is the loft my father first built 70 years ago. Yarraville has always been good to me. There’s always a lot to do in the area. I like getting down to the local football, I’m actually a life member of the Yarraville football club. I have got two boys who played their football there. I have got a dog I like to take for a walk around the area.

There is a lot of training. You will see a lot of people out training on a Saturday or a Sunday, but unless you know to look it’s one of those things that you just wouldn’t know was there. There are always people walking past who are interested in having a look at the pigeons, a lot of people want to know about how they navigate their way home. They usually race for about three years … if they had proved their worth in racing then you would breed from them.

I got involved in pigeon racing when I was about four years old. We had a couple of pigeons in our backyard, but I became more involved when I would visit my uncle across the road. I was always racing pigeons as a young boy, by the time I was seven I was well involved. What can you tell us about it? Pigeons are not unlike race horses, the old saying “horses for courses” also applies. There are pigeons that will be good at enduring headwinds while others might not do as well in good weather, but will be good when there’s a storm. It’s highly competitive. There is a lot of money spent on pigeons these days. Not by me, it was always a hobby, but there is a big race worth $110,000 and another worth $30,000.

Have things changed much over time? There was a period from the 1940s to the 1960s when it was very popular, at the bigger clubs you would have about 60 members at any one time. I remember when I joined Yarraville in the 1960s there were 42 members, it’s just slowly dwindled down from there over time. Now there are about 10 members, but they don’t all race at the same time. And only a few are from the Yarraville and Footscray area now, most of our members come from the Altona area. Your club house is up for sale – what will happen to the club?

How did you get involved in pigeon racing?

The Yarraville club will stay on as a group, we are affiliated with a larger group and they have got an area for us to meet. The growth area for pigeon racing is now out Melton way.

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir gives the thumbs up to an old favourite’s revamp The many shoulder-to-shoulder eating houses of Footscray are forever in a state of flux. Old ones close, new ones open, stayers are overhauled, new names and a lick of paint are applied to the tired – and some disappear forever. It’s a fascinating cycle, one experienced – often subliminally – by anyone who spends time there. And so it is that our fave pho joint has had a makeover. We’ve always favoured Hien Vuong Pasteur – for the high quality of its food, but also because it’s a smallish family operation that can be relied upon to always have a seat or table to spare. So in some ways we’re sad to see its old-school formica/utilitarian/white classic pho house appearance give way to something hipper. But in truth the revamp here has been done with more class than most in this neighbourhood – it’s stylish and welcoming, a central high table with stools surrounded by orthodox tabling. And it appears to be working! On both our recent visits, the place has been bustling. And the food? Well that hasn’t changed – still top-shelf pho house classics, including superb medium pho with sliced chicken and beef ($12). Like most of its kind, Hien Vuong Pasteur has a smallish range of more exotic dishes, including bo kho (beef stew, $12).

But the keys, as always with this dish, are the soup/broth (very good) and the carrot. The carrot is invariably in big chunks – and hopefully holding together yet on the verge of disintegration. UPDATE ON THE WEST GATE TUNNEL PROJECT Work is continuing at pace as we get closer to the start of tunnelling. Another milestone has been reached with our second Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM), Vida, arriving and currently being assembled. Bella, the ﬁrst TBM, will start tunnelling mid-year, digging a 4 kilometre tunnel from Yarraville to the West Gate Freeway. Vida will commence digging the second tunnel later in 2019. Once complete, the West Gate Tunnel will give Melbourne a second freeway link between the west and the city. To prepare for tunnelling, we have also ﬁnished building a massive shed that will reduce the amount of dust and noise for nearby houses and businesses as soil is removed from the tunnels and sorted before being trucked away. We are close to completing moving a 600 metre section of the North Yarra Main Sewer. This diversion will protect it from tunnelling and prevent disruptions to sewerage services across Melbourne’s north and west once tunnelling commences and beyond.

Closer to the West Gate Freeway, power relocation works in Yarraville have resulted in some taller, slimmer, power poles ready for building additional lanes on the freeway. Freeway widening works continue from Williamstown Rd to beyond Grieve Parade.

New parks and open spaces

A key part of the project is the building of a bridge over the Maribyrnong River that will connect the tunnels with an elevated road above Footscray Road, as part of completing the second freeway link between the west and the city. Temporary jetties on the river banks or river barges will provide space for workers to build bridge supports and lift beams into place with minimal impact on the river.

The West Gate Tunnel Project is building more than a tunnel. We will create nearly nine hectares of new parks, wetlands and community open space across Altona North, Yarraville, Footscray and West Melbourne. These parks will be planted with some of the 17,000 trees and tens of thousands of native and indigenous shrubs and grasses.

Raising respectful teens How to help kids navigate the teenage abyss with respect for themselves and others. Building resilience

parents and carers educate themselves and clarify their values and messages before talking openly and honestly with their young person. It is also important to support their right to develop healthy, respectful and consensual sexual relationships and not assume everyone is opposite-sex attracted or the gender assigned at birth. Accept that young people may have different views to yours and take a positive approach that acknowledges that sexual activity and experimentation can be a healthy part of adolescence. Everyday moments, such as watching TV news or other shows, can be good starting points from which to ask your young person what they are thinking or feeling.

Instilling strong values, helping to build resilience and providing support when needed is critical in helping children to develop self-confidence. This is equally important for girls and boys. Resilience is about being realistic, thinking rationally, looking on the bright side, finding the positives, expecting things to go well and moving forward, even when things seem bad.

If potential mental health issues arise, Associate Professor Green recommends talking to them and seeing a health professional together. This will also reassure them that they are not alone. “You could start by talking to your GP, your child’s school counsellor, teacher or other school staff. GPs and other health professionals can suggest strategies and give advice,” she says.

Porters Williamstown: a flavour feast Established as a new star in the Nelson Place dining precinct nearly a year ago, Porters Williamstown celebrates the best of mod-Aus cuisine, yet draws for its menu from the rich diversity of the villages of Europe and the finesse of France to the simplicity of Japan and spice of eastern Asia.

Porters opens at 6am for breakfast during the week (from 7am on weekends) before introducing the lunch menu, which looks after vegetarian and gluten-free dining.

Chef Ryan Lane, who heads up the kitchen, says he’s been in love with the food scene for the past 23 years. He’s learned from London’s best, including during a stint at highly acclaimed sixstar Cadogan Hotel.

The lights are dimmed come dinner time, evoking a sense of occasion but with relaxation to the fore. Much attention is paid to comfort and ambience, with concrete floors, squashy chesterfields to sink into, and fabric bucket chairs at well-spaced tables. Timber features add richness and warmth and designer lightfittings shed mellow light.

“I believe in allowing ingredients to shine through without over-complicating them,” Ryan says. “I have a few favourite ingredients – mud crab, eye fillet, chilli, chocolate. I’ve not created a dish featuring all of them….but watch this space!”

The sophisticated fitout was designed by owners John and Zoey Porter. The talented duo arrived from East Sussex seven years ago, fell in love with Williamstown and quickly realised it would be their forever home. Porters is their homage to all that’s best about Melbourne’s dining scene.

The new winter menu has been released, one that revels in seasonal produce. Some beautifully warming dishes have been created, using ingredients such as earthy mushrooms, leeks and parsnips, as well as the finest Aussie seafood, succulent lamb and tender beef. SPORT Glory goes one up in a game of coach’s revenge Yarraville Glory has taken out local bragging rights over Altona City with a 2-1 win in the Football Victoria men’s state league 1 at McIvor Reserve on Saturday. The victory was sweet for Glory coach Paul Donnelly, who brought about the downfall of a club he used to manage. Despite Altona City sitting nine points above his side entering the round, Donnelly was confident the Glory could get all three points. “I wish we could play Altona City every week,” he said with a laugh. “I just think we match up well against them. “There’s a local rivalry there and the game had a bit of everything. “It was a good game and a good win.” Donnelly hit back at claims from the Altona City camp that his style of football is based on defence – or effectively boring. In fact, he believes Yarraville’s win was achieved in an entertaining fashion and that

his side was the aggressors from the word go. “I wouldn’t say I’m a defensive coach,” Donnelly said. “That’s interesting, but everyone’s got an opinion. “We’ve got a brand of football that we play, but we want to score goals. “It’s depending on who we’re playing, we mix it up. “We didn’t go in defensive, we dominated the first half and should’ve been three-nil after 20 minutes. “We missed about five good chances.” Ryan Stewart put Yarraville in front with a spectacular goal. Stewart’s goal was erased with a City equaliser and the Glory were wondering if their missed chances would prove costly. Eagles land a welcome win

By Lance Jenkinson North Footscray has resuscitated its season with a much-needed 19-point win over Manor Lakes in the Western Region Football League division 2 at Howqua Reserve on Saturday. The Devils had been ruing a combination of factors that had them lurking in the lower reaches of the ladder as injuries, inexperience and a bit of bad luck has followed the team. With just two wins from eight starts, Devils player-coach Jonathan Miller admitted it was a “relief” to get back into the winners’ circle. “The general talent we’re playing with isn’t as deep as it used to be last year, but the application is still there,” he said. “The boys deserve that win. “I’ve been reinforcing the message that we’re eight games in and we’ve been in front at half-time in five that we’ve lost. “To lose two games in the last 30 seconds is tough. “It’s one of those seasons where we quite easily could have been 5-3, but unfortunately we’re sitting at 2-6.” The young guns stepped up to the plate for North Footscray in the win over Manor Lakes. Key forward James Waters was the pick of the bunch with five goals. “He’s starting to work out his own bag of tricks,” Miller said. “He’s as good on the deck as what he is in the contested mark situation. “He’s quick off the mark, he’s got a great leap, a great set of hands and a great kick, so once he learns how to utilise all those strings, he’s going to be a phenomenal player.” The Vorano brothers – Brody and Jack – were again big contributors for North Footscray. Jack spent time both at a half-forward and on the ball in an impressive showing. “He’s stayed confident when things don’t go his way early, so that maturity is starting to come through,” Miller said. Brody was arguably best-on-ground for his impact across half-forward and capped a fine game with a goal. Adam Petridis, Troy Manolis and Miller were among the best, while Manolis and Joel Richardson kicked two goals apiece. North Footscray’s win had nothing to do with the individual and all to do with the team. “I think it was more the way we structured up as a team,” Miller said. “We forced them into errors.” North Footscray will get no better opportunity to close the gap on the top four than on Saturday when it hosts fourth-placed Parkside at Hansen Reserve. Miller lamented the lack of a true four-quarter performance so far this season.

Altona East Phoenix got to sing the team song in men’s state league 2 with a 2-0 road win over Western Suburbs. In men’s state league 3, Williamstown pipped Essendon United 1-0 with the winner coming from Graham Bell. Altona North continued to boss the men’s state league 4 competition. Laverton played out a 2-2 draw with North Melbourne Athletic, while Melbourne City drew 1-1 with Bell Park. In women’s state league 3, Altona Magic was out-classed 2-0 by Spring Hills. Altona City and Brunswick City – two top four sides – had an enthralling 2-2 draw.

In division 1, Altona cruised to a 178-point victory over Albion in a clash of the top-versus-bottom sides. Spotswood, led by seven goals from Mitchell Coleman, had a 176-point win over newly promoted Point Cook. In division 3, Laverton secured its first win since the season opener, beating North Sunshine by 30 points.

Yarraville Seddon has announced it is back in the Western Region Football League division 2 premiership hunt. The Eagles, who had the rare tag of underdogs going into the game, produced some of their finest football of the season in a 59-point drubbing of Wyndhamvale at Yarraville Oval on Saturday. Eagles coach Vinnie Turcinovich believes something has clicked for his side in recent weeks. “There’s a feeling around the club now that I didn’t sense last year,” he said. “When I was with Port Melbourne [in the VFL] with Gary Ayres a couple of years ago, that side had the same mentality and the will to want to play with each other and have fun that we have now.” Yarraville Seddon was slow out of the blocks in an offensive sense and trailed by nine points at quarter-time. The Eagles certainly came to life in a barnstorming second quarter, in which they kicked 5.8 to 0.3 and then kicked nine goals to four in a second half blitz. “We didn’t play the way we wanted in that first quarter, but we addressed it after that,” Turcinovich said. Jesse Varsamakis was the cornerstone to Yarraville Seddon’s big win. Varsamakis is not only superior with his work in the ruck, but is also a dominant force when moved forward. “He [Varsamakis] is the best ruckman in the competition, but once he gets his head around playing centre half-forward, he could easily be the best centre half-forward,” Turcinovich said. Yarraville Seddon suffered a blow with Harris Lanyon breaking his arm. The Eagles at least had a ready-made replacement with Brandon Lester. “He’s more than capable playing in the middle, so he’s a good replacement,” Turcinovich said. Blake Green, Karan Bharathi and Andrejs Everitt booted two goals each for Yarraville Seddon. Jordan Robinson and Daniel Bolkas had strong outings in the defence. Seagulls draw seesawing game By Lance Jenkinson A cliffhanger contest between Williamstown and Port Melbourne ended in a draw in the Victorian Football League at North Port Oval on Sunday. The Seagulls and the Borough, two fierce rivals, could not be separated at full time, with the sides finishing deadlocked on 74-apiece after a game of momentum swings played in variable conditions with patches of sunshine and rain. Williamstown coach Andrew Collins was content to walk away from the see-sawing battle between two well-matched sides with a share of the points. “If you said you could’ve taken two points going to Port Melbourne’s ground, you would’ve taken them,” he said. “I said that to the boys after the game.” Williamstown inconceivably went to half-time staring at a deficit. In stark contrast to their efficiency in front of goal the week before, the Seagulls could barely locate the big sticks in the first half.

The Seagulls were the dominant side in the first half, but their finishing let them down. They kicked 3.11 from 14 scoring shots with a large chunk considered gettable. “I thought our first half was terrific, but we just couldn’t put the score on the board,” Collins said. “It was incredibly frustrating.

“We kicked 19.9 last week and we had 3.11 to half-time this week. “It just shows how much of a psychological game that it is.” When the rain began to tumble, Port Melbourne started to assume control in the third quarter. The Borough opened up a 17-point lead at three-quarter time and seemed destined to run away with the game. While the Borough had momentum, they caught the same goalkicking yips that afflicted Williamstown in the first half, kicking 3.7 for the quarter and keeping the visitors in it. A late goal in the third quarter to Adam Marcon gave the Seagulls a huge boost going into the huddle. “We were over handling the ball [in the third quarter],” Collins said. “Their pressure went up a notch and made us fumble the ball a lot. “They started to win the stoppages, they started to win the tackle count and it put us on the back foot.” Williamstown sensed there would be one

Altona star is in the mix Altona Hockey Club young gun Connar Otterbach has never had a shortage of idols to model his game on. Since the age of seven, the 17-year-old has been guided by some passionate coaches at Altona, including current senior teammate Andrew Scanlon. Given his desire to make the Australian team, Otterbach has kept a close eye on the Kookaburras, the Australian men’s hockey team, in particular the playing style of former captain and defender Mark Knowles. “I play a similar position to him on the field and I’ve tried to look at what he does well to make myself a better player,” Otterbach said. Now Otterbach is taking on role model status of his own, with the Altona resident enjoying the honour of captaining Victoria’s under-18 team after being voted into the role by his peers. “When I got told I was captaining Victoria, I felt so honoured,” Otterbach said. “I’ve been around that group for at least five years now and just being able to take ownership and lead the younger players in the team was such a good role for me.” Otterbach will feature in Victoria’s under-21 team for a second time when he plays at the national championships in Lismore next month. It is a crucial tournament for Otterbach in his bid to guide the Big V to a title and position himself for a spot in the Australian under-21 squad. Even as one of the younger members of the travelling team, Otterbach is confident of having an eye-catching tournament. “Last year, I was pretty nervous playing with the older group because I wasn’t really sure what to expect and how much better they were going to be,” Otterbach said. “As I went on with training, I was able to grow and develop my game and just felt comfortable. “I feel confident in my ability to be able to play well over there. “They will pick an Australian squad from that tournament and the team will travel to Malaysia to play in an international tournament.” Otterbach is part of the Australian futures squad, which is made up of the nation’s top 30 players under the age of 18. He is also part of the emerging Victorian Vikings squad, which is full of young guns hoping to make the Australian Hockey League team. As part of that squad, the Maribyrnong College student will be on the radar of HC Melbourne, the locally-based franchise in the Hockey One national competition. “I’m aiming to get picked in the squad for HC Melbourne and maybe be given the opportunity to play one or two games at the

The Seagulls not only got back into the contest in the fourth quarter, but they hit the front by seven points after four unanswered goals, including two from Nick Rodda and one each to Jaylon Thorpe and Joel Ottavi. A goal to Port Melbourne’s Ethan Phillips had the game on level terms once again, before Jason Pongracic restored Williamstown’s seven-point advantage shortly after. When it came to the crunch in the final five minutes, Port Melbourne found a way through Tom O’Sullivan. In a bittersweet time-on for O’Sullivan, he kicked the goal to keep the Borough alive and the behind to level the scores. Williamstown had one last crack at victory late on with the ball in its forward line, but time ran out on another memorable chapter in the Williamstown and Port Melbourne rivalry. Williamstown takes on western suburbs rivals Werribee in a mouth-watering fifth-versus-sixth encounter at Avalon Airport Oval on Sunday at 1pm.
