The Steve drops anchor in the west The Steve Irwin has found a new home – in Melbourne’s west. Sea Shepherd’s decommissioned flagship vessel, which undertook many anti-whaling and environment missions, will be permanently moored at Williamstown’s Seaworks maritime precinct and is destined to house a restaurant. ■ Goya Dmytryshchak reports on page 9.

Council staff payout win By Benjamin Millar Maribyrnong ratepayers will foot the bill for almost $2.4 million in payouts to staff let go as part of the controversial outsourcing of home care services. Maribyrnong and Hobsons Bay councillors voted in February to outsource services for some of the west’s most vulnerable residents. The councils are sub-contracting domestic assistance, personal care and in-home respite for the elderly and people with disabilities to Uniting AgeWell because of possible changes in federal funding.

Maribyrnong council launched action in the Federal Court to argue a clause in its employment agreement (EA) with staff members meant it did not need to pay out redundancies because it was assisting their transfers to Uniting AgeWell. The Australian Services Union, which represents the workers, maintained the redundancies should still be paid, a position last week backed by Justice Michael Wheelahan. Union secretary Lisa Darmanin told Star Weekly the workers were entitled to redundancy payments in the event of the council ceasing their roles.

“I feel sorry for ratepayers that Maribyrnong council incurred these extra legal costs by taking the matter to court,” she said. Ms Darmanin said the court challenge, launched before the council had even voted to proceed with outsourcing, showed “extraordinary disregard” for longstanding workers affected by the changes. “Without the ASU, these workers who face an uncertain future and are at risk of insecure work, would have been denied their entitlement to redundancy payments,” she said. Maribyrnong community services director Clem Gillings said legal advice had prompted

the council to seek clarity in the Federal Court. “We wanted to clarify the application of our EA so that we, and our staff, are certain about how it applies during this process,” she said. “Council will absolutely meet all of the confirmed entitlements of staff.” Ms Gillings said the council had 28 days to review the decision and was seeking legal advice on the matter. The court’s decision does not affect Hobsons Bay council as its workers were employed under a different enterprise agreement.

A MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR

OUT AND ABOUT

Our city continues to deliver quality programs and services for the community to enjoy. We recently released our proposed Annual Budget 2019-20 which shows where your rates are being spent and our financial planning for the future. Some of the key projects proposed are $14.4 million for greening our City, including the planting of trees in streets, boulevards, and parks across the City; $15.7 million to improve Councilowned roads and $4.2 million to build and improve footpath and cycle ways.

A number of recent rates forums indicated strong community interest to move away from the Net Annual Value (NAV) system of rating to the Capital Improved Value (CIV) system of rating. The CIV system is the most commonly used valuation by Victorian Councils and takes into account the full development value of the property. It’s also reflective of the general market value of the property as at the date of valuation. Our proposed Annual Budget for 2019-20 was available for community consultation on Council’s website and Your City Your Voice for four weeks during May. We also held a live Q&A with our CEO and Directors via our Facebook page, to address the questions valued by you, our community. The proposed Annual Budget will be considered at a Special Council Meeting on Tuesday 25 June.

The multicultural community across Maribyrnong is one of the most diverse that exists in this country. I’d like to take this moment to acknowledge the traditional owners and custodians of the land and share with you a story of Bunjil the Eagle, the creator. There was a time where the land we now know as Melbourne, went right through to the ocean. One day, while the world was in chaos, the nations were fighting, they were neglecting the land, they neglected their children, they killed animals that didn’t get eaten, they caught fish that were spawning. The sea became angry and began to rise and cover the land; creating what we now know as Port Phillip Bay. The people went to Bunjil, to ask that Bunjil stop the sea from rising.

COUNCIL MEETINGS June Tuesday 4, 6.30pm – Special Committee Meeting (Budget Submissions) Tuesday 11, 6.30pm – Ordinary Council Tuesday 25, 6.30pm – Special Council Meeting (Consider Budget 2019/2020) Tuesday 25, 7pm – City Development Special Committee Meetings are held at the Maribyrnong Council Offices, corner Hyde and Napier Streets, Footscray. Agendas are available via Council’s website the Friday before a meeting at www.maribyrnong.vic.au/meetings

After the nations promised to change their ways, Bunjil raised his spear and told the sea to stop and the people to respect the laws of the land. The longest continuous culture on this planet tell these stories as a way to pass knowledge. What this story describes is the erosion of the land and the need to protect our sea, our land, our people and our stories. Dow to close Altona chemical plant The closure of Dow Chemical’s plant in Altona has sparked a sharp rebuke of politicians for failing to solve the national gas crisis and a key union warns that a job loss “avalanche” could be unleashed unless the problem was solved. Dow last week cited rising gas prices and international competition as factors in its decision to shut its manufacturing plant, costing 26 jobs. The company said the plant was struggling with rising costs and the company’s ability to supply the Asia region through its new factories in Thailand and the Middle East.

“There [were] a range of factors that have impacted the plant’s economic viability,” said Dow’s Australia and New Zealand president and managing director Karen Dobson. “Energy is one of a number of factors considered in the assessment, including increasing operations and manufacturing costs … No single factor drove the assessment conclusion.” Gas prices in Australia have increased sharply in recent years amid supply pressures that have sparked warnings of a potential east-coast shortage.

“While politicians bicker, companies close,” said Ben Davis, Victorian secretary of the Australian Workers Union, which represents Dow employees. He said the closure was a “devastating, heartbreaking” decision for his members and their families. “Thus far we have been spared too many job losses,” he said. “Let’s hope this isn’t the start of an avalanche to come.” Industry representatives for some of the country’s biggest manufacturers said the closure of Dow’s Altona plant highlighted

the severity of the challenges facing the manufacturing sector. “If you want globally competitive manufacturing, you need competitively priced energy,” said Ben Eade, the chief executive of industry group Manufacturing Australia. Dow said workers at the plant would leave the company over the next six months, when the firm would cease operations at the site. Dow Altona site leader Justin Jones said the plant was no longer competitive. Nick Toscano and Paul Sakkal/The Age

Fight on over soccer bid

Plans by Australia’s largest soccer club to build a multimillion-dollar complex in a public park have raised the ire of nearby residents, who say the development would eradicate some of the last open parkland in Melbourne’s inner west. Melbourne Victory revealed in October last year it had received $10 million in state government funding to help it build an $18 million women’s and youth academy in heritage-listed Footscray Park. Occupying the entire flat parkland to the west of the park, the complex would include three floodlit synthetic and turf soccer pitches, six changerooms and a 500-person stand.

Residents say they are concerned that one of their suburb’s biggest off-lead dog walking and recreation areas will be confined to a walking path around the pitches. Sharon Schwab, whose online petition against the plan has more than 1900 signatures, said she opposed the concept of a private development on public land. “Council’s proposal to lease our park’s only flat open recreational space will leave nowhere for the community to go that is suitable for non-organised sports, general recreation and large gatherings for the community,” she said. Maribyrnong chief executive Stephen Wall said the academy would be a “great thing for young people”.

“Having recreation facilities that can come to our city with external funding is certainly a positive,” he said. Former Maribyrnong mayor Sara Coward, who has been using the park for off-lead dog walking for 30 years, said she did not agree the development would be an enhancement for the broader public. “Yes there’s gains for some parts of the community, but it seems to me there’s losses for a larger part,” she said. A Melbourne Victory spokesman said inquiries about the project should be directed to Maribyrnong council.

The world’s most important scientific forum for the various global football codes has kicked off in Melbourne, hosted by sports science specialists Victoria University. VU’s Institute for Health and Sport is hosting the 9th World Congress on Science & Football (June 4-7), a four-day event exploring the latest research and innovations in soccer and the rugby codes as well as Australian, American and Gaelic football. Researchers, practitioners and professionals within all football codes are meeting at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre to discuss a range of science-based approaches to sport including data analytics, player health and the use of technology in sport. Institute for Health and Sport executive director Professor Michael McKenna said the congress attracts top sporting academics and researchers, industry experts and key government bodies. “This is an incredible opportunity to discover the remarkable work being done around the world in the field of sports science, across all codes of football,” he said. “From biomechanics, coaching, exercise physiology, match analysis, to motor behaviour, performance profiling, and sports psychology, this is a unique chance to access experts in the area of sport and translational research.” The conference has been held every four years since 1987. VU academics will present discussions on a range of topics including the physical fitness characteristics of female Australian football players, match-day training and the role of recruiters. Eid a celebration for all The Australian Islamic Society at Newport is inviting everyone to join the Muslim community for the Eid celebration at Seaworks in Williamstown this month. An estimated 10,000 people regularly attend the biggest annual Eid festival in Melbourne’s west. The society’s Ahmad Elhawli said the local Islamic community had been holding the event, which marks the end of Ramadan, for 22 years. “The whole significance of the fasting is to feel with the needy and those that don’t have the pleasures and the comforts that we do,” he said.

Perfect once more.

“And a part of the month is also to give back in charity to the poor and needy to help them have food, to help them have bare necessities – to try and feel like they live a comfortable life. “The Eid itself, the day of celebration, we send presents and to all those that are in need to also help them celebrate. The whole point of the event is to integrate the Muslim community with the broader Australian community.” The Australian Islamic Society Eid Festival will be on Saturday, June 15, and Sunday, June 16, from 11am-5pm at Seaworks. Dogs great celebrates By Goya Dmytryshchak The Western Bulldogs’ oldest past player, a former club president, last Thursday celebrated his 100th birthday. Jim Miller, who was born in West Footscray and now lives in Altona North, celebrated with his family, which indulged him with a cake decorated in the colours of his beloved team. By age seven, Mr Miller was often at football grounds of a weekend, selling Football Records and watching games. After leaving school, he moved to First Street in West Footscray, where he met his future wife, Jean, who lived across the road. They were married just before Christmas in 1940 and moved to Suffolk Street, West Footscray, where they lived for the next 77 years. Mr Miller enlisted in the army and the RAAF and was stationed at Perth before returning to Benalla in country Victoria, becoming a flying instructor. He later became self-employed as a transport operator of chemicals, bullets and dynamite around Australia. Mr Miller was part of the first Footscray team to play in a VFL final – in 1938, his first season at the highest level. The Western Bulldogs say Mr Miller gave the Dogs fine service over 131 games in 11 years. After retiring from active sport, he became vice-president of the Footscray Football Club from 1957-63 and president from 1963-66. Mr Miller’s other passions included golf and racing. He also liked holidaying at Deniliquin and every winter for 30 years, he and his wife would travel with their caravan to sunny Queensland and other places around Australia. Mr Miller has one daughter, three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Crime spree ends in jail A man arrested in Altona after a string of violent crimes committed on parole has been sentenced to a minimum of 14 months jail. Ryan Forshaw, 34, pleaded guilty in the County Court to theft, handling stolen goods, aggravated burglary, resisting arrest, breaching parole, unlawful assault and unlawful assault with a weapon. The court heard that in May, 2018, he was captured on CCTV filling a stolen car with fuel at the United petrol station in Kororoit Creek Road at Altona. When police approached, Forshaw ran before being chased down by two officers. He was on parole for four armed robberies when he committed the latest string of offences. The court heard that after being paroled, he entered his mother’s Ocean Grove home through an unlocked door in April, 2018, and stole her partner’s car. Later that month, Forshaw wrestled a female worker at a Newcombe bottle shop before being overpowered by another employee and fleeing. Five days later, he and an accomplice broke into a Docklands car rental business and stole several sets of keys, driving away in one of the cars. Six days later, he and his partner drove the stolen car to a Geelong property. The court heard his offending was motivated by drugs. Forshaw was sentenced to 27 months jail with a minimum of 14 months. Goya Dmytryshchak

Madam discovers joy in writing By Alesha Capone Brothel madam Lily Yang has penned an autobiography detailing her childhood in China and eventual journey to Australia. Yang – who is madam of The Cherry Tree Garden in Williamstown North – says her book, Take Memories, Leave Footprints, “doesn’t actually dwell too much on being a madam in a brothel”.

Rather, the book details how a young Lily and her family were exiled to a village in far north China to be “rehabilitated” during the Chinese Cultural Revolution before going on to detail her experiences growing to adulthood. Yang, who lives in Caroline Springs, described writing the book as “a wonderful experience”. “Writing is a bit like reading a book in reverse – one thing remembered leads to uncovering other unremembered things,” she said. “That was the real joy I found in writing. “I was lucky, as well, because I had grown up with storytellers, especially my father and an old Buddhist lady in the village when I was around 10 years old. I would sit enchanted by the ‘word paintings’ and the legends of old China and its superstitions.” Yang has written two previous books, one of which is based on the true story of a young girl in Cambodia who escaped from child sex slavery and gets help from Yang. Yang said proceeds from sales of her books go towards the Sunlight Foundation, a charity

“I want to be a voice in my industry that says this is not right and it must stop,” she said. Yang said she believed what she does as a madam “is fun, necessary and helpful to society”.

She said that people who might not have a positive perception of madams would “be surprised, and pleasantly so, to find that Lily Yang is just the same as everyone else”. Details: lilyyang.com.au

Company fined $300k for death By Benjamin Millar A shopfitting company has been convicted and fined $300,000 over the death of a worker who fell more than three metres at a Maidstone building site. Entire Shopfitting Pty Ltd entered a guilty plea in the Melbourne County Court last month to failing to provide or maintain systems of work that were safe, and failing to prepare a Safe Work Method Statement before starting high-risk construction work. Company director John Paul Kenneally was

‘‘

This is a serious breach. It was an obvious known risk - Judge Lisa Hannan

’’

fined $30,000 without conviction after also pleading guilty to one charge of failing to take reasonable care. The court heard that on May 19, 2017, two Entire Shopfitting employees were sent to the mezzanine level of the worksite for framing works for the Funtopia children’s play centre.

Peter Heads was on a step ladder when one of its legs went through a cut-out in the floor, plunging Mr Head over the edge of the unguarded mezzanine and onto the ground 3.4 metres below. He was taken to hospital with serious head injuries from the fall and died the next day. The court heard that Entire Shopfitting had failed to take proper protection measures to protect workers from falls. Judge Lisa Hannan said Mr Kenneally was aware that no temporary perimeter or guard rail had been erected, yet he took no steps to

reduce risks which should have been apparent. “In my view this is a serious breach. It was an obvious known risk and no measures were taken to ameliorate such risk. The potential for death or serious injury was high,” she said. WorkSafe health and safety executive director Julie Nielsen said the incident was a tragic reminder that working from height can have catastrophic consequences. “The combination of a ladder and an unguarded void is a deadly one,” she said. “There is no excuse for failing to protect workers from falls from height.”

All set to head west Aspiring musicians can also take part in a professional development workshop on the pros and cons of making music independently in Australia. Maribyrnong mayor Martin Zakharov said West Set shows the live music scene in the west was alive and well. “Musical talent is at the forefront of our thriving calendar of festivals that gets people in the City of Maribyrnong out and about – even in the cold winter months,” he said. “You’ll be spoilt for choice with over 30 events on offer, many of them free and open for the whole community to enjoy.” Details: www.festivalcity.com.au Benjamin Millar Artists Ruby Jones and Allara Briggs are ready to entertain. Bay home for the Steve Irwin By Goya Dmytryshchak Standing on the helipad aboard Sea Shepherd’s decommissioned flagship vessel, the Steve Irwin, the view of the bay and Melbourne’s skyline is phenomenal. Yarraville’s Kerrie Goodall, founder of the Ship for Good philanthropic organisation, said the vessel will be permanently moored at Williamstown’s Seaworks maritime precinct. Ms Goodall has spearheaded a campaign to “Save the Steve”, which had been destined to be scrapped in Hong Kong. Ideas for the ship include live music on deck, a vegan restaurant, bar, barber, tattoo studio and accommodation in the quaint cabins. The ship’s anti-whaling history and last two campaigns – to stop the Adani coal mine and drilling in the Great Australian Bight – are portrayed in Defend, Conserve Protect, a documentary produced by Melbourne’s Stephen Amis. Narrated by Dan Aykroyd, the film won best international feature documentary at last year’s American Documentary Film Festival and will premiere at Yarraville’s Sun Theatre this month. Ms Goodall said although the Steve had been retired from Neptune’s Navy – the name of Sea Shepherd’s fleet – it still had a lot to give to the cause through entertainment, education and inspiration. “There’s a lot of love for the Sea Shepherd and what they do, and fortunately a lot of that love comes from wealthy and famous people,” she said. “Red Hot Chili Peppers frontman Anthony Kiedis donated that retractable helideck to protect the helicopter, which was sent out to search for illegal fishing vessels. “Often, if it came into contact with Japanese

Spotswood plan gets green light By Goya Dmytryshchak A Spotswood glass manufacturer has received planning approval for a controversial redevelopment . The approval is subject to conditions to alleviate nearby residents’ concerns about increased truck traffic on Hudsons Road. O-I Operations applied to Hobsons Bay council to build two warehouses with five access points, including two new ones on Hudsons Road. A planning committee of the council,

‘‘

Warehousing is not an appropriate use of this site - Jonathon Marsden

’’

comprising councillors Peter Hemphill, Colleen Gates and Jonathon Marsden, last week voted two-one to approve the plans. Cr Marsden voted against, saying he felt “very strongly that warehousing is not an appropriate use of this site despite its historic and continuing use as a warehousing site”.

The meeting heard that council received 24 objections to the plans, many concerned with the new crossovers on Hudsons Road, use of heavy vehicles on Hudsons Road and the surrounding road network, and potential for circumventing truck bans that will come in to effect when the West Gate Tunnel is completed in 2022. O-I is exempt from the 24-hour truck ban to be introduced on Hudsons Road as bans don’t apply to trucks that have destinations or origins in the area or are loading and unloading in the area.

Cr Gates included a clause that the eastern crossover, between O-I’s manufacturing facility and warehouse one, with access onto Hudsons Road, must be used only by medium rigid vehicles no longer than 12.5 metres and between the hours of 7am and 5pm. Cr Hemphill said this would “make it difficult” for big trucks to use residential streets”. “I have been keen for some time to see if we can put our own truck bans along Hudsons Road or some traffic-calming measures in that area,” he said.

In one program, horticulture students have propagated large quantities of plants for planting and growing in other schools and at Footscray Park. Teacher Jak Dunstan said the propagated plants have seen the local parks, childcare centres and primary schools become greener places. “It’s about community connection – we use the horticulture area we have at the school and

are involved with the primary schools and childcare centres in the area,” he said. Mr Dunstan said the program has been used to address the problem of plants being stolen from Footscray Park, including rare and unusual species. “We have a really great relationship with Maribyrnong council and the grounds team there, we propagate a lot of plants for them to replace stolen plants,” he said. The school, which has itself been built on top of a former landfill, has plans to make further sustainability inroads by introducing a new industrial food composter which has the capacity to take 60 kilograms of food scraps a day. ResourceSmart Schools Awards winners will be announced at the MCG on June 13 with the host of ABC’s War on Waste, Craig Reucassel. Ben Millar

Fight to overturn ferry ban By Goya Dmytryshchak

Guest writer in western return International best-selling author Caroline Overington will this month help launch the 16th Williamstown Literary Festival. She has gone from covering the royal visit to Footscray as a suburban journalist with The Mail to a world-acclaimed writer. “I have never had so much fun as I had covering royal visits to our mighty western suburbs,” she said. “I did work experience at the Melton Mail Express when I was 14 and I immediately fell in love with journalism – if I wasn’t already. “It was so much fun, going around talking to people, asking questions, figuring out what was going on, sharing their joy and, sometimes, their frustration.” Overington said she drew inspiration for her books from life. “I see things, and I wonder about them, and I can’t always fit everything into a news story, so off I go, turning the characters fictional, expanding on the story, making up a new ending that suits me better … so the bad guys get what’s coming, which doesn’t happen often enough in real life,” she said. Overington will appear at the Willy Lit Fest opening night soiree at Sebastian Beach Grill on Friday, June 14, from 6.30-9pm. She will also be in conversation with Michael Roddan on June 15. Pressure is mounting on Parks Victoria to review its decision to deny a pioneering Williamstown ferry business access to the Southgate berth it had used for 13 years. Williamstown Bay and River Cruises (WBRC) owner Mark Davy, who started tourist ferry services to Williamstown in 1984, said his business was in danger of folding. “We just need to have a spot on the Yarra – we deserve to be here,” Mr Davy said. “Why we have been excluded, I don’t know. “We can’t keep going – we’re paying 10 or 12 grand a week for wages and we’re not carrying people.” His call for a review of Parks Victoria’s decision is supported by Hobsons Bay council. Cr Peter Hemphill and mayor Jonathon Marsden will seek a meeting with Parks Victoria, which told Star Weekly it would be open to the move. “This has been an absolute disgrace by Parks Victoria,” Cr Hemphill said. “It is anti-competitive and Williamstown tourism has been the loser out of it. “Parks Victoria’s action has also discriminated against disabled people, as WBRC has the only boat with wheelchair access.” Westgate Punt director Rob Horner, who has operated for the past 25 years under the West Gate Bridge, said omitting WBRC from Southbank was a “great disservice” to the city of Melburne and to Hobsons Bay. “They are the only operator I see, who run regularly on the river, come rain hail or shine, the only operator who pick up and drop off at Scienceworks,” he said. “Down river, I’m the troll under the bridge – I see everything and Melbourne needs WBRC.”

NEWS STARWEEKLY.COM.AU

MY PLACE Mary Long says her love of collaboration makes the inner-west perfect for living and working. She chats with Benjamin Millar. What’s your connection with West Footscray? We moved to West Footscray in 1997. Like many people, we sort of moved here by default. It was the only place we could afford. Somehow this turned out to be a great move. We quickly felt at home and a deep connection to the west. What do you like most about the area? Its diversity, for sure. There is a sense of community and inclusiveness that you would be hard pressed to find on the “other side”. I always joke we are on the right side of the river … the Maribyrnong! What are your favourite local places? We are spoiled for choice here. We have Thai, Sri Lankan, Indian, great pizza and a range of fabulous cafes. They are all great. To be honest, my favourite spaces are the open spaces. My partner, Jos Van Hulsen, has imparted a love of exploring. He often takes me on adventure walks exploring old tunnels and collecting discarded objects to photograph for his artwork. I do love Pipemakers Park and never tire of climbing and wandering around the large sculpture, Pipe Dreams, by the late Matthew Harding. What can you tell us about Post Industrial Design? Jos and I started Post Industrial Design back in 1995 in Richmond. Initially, it was a way to showcase Jos’s work. Since then we have expanded to support and represent other

artists, designers and makers. In 2011, we opened the business here in West Footscray. We felt strongly that we wanted to invest in our own neighbourhood, to create something in the place that we were living and raising our children. Why do you have an emphasis on showcasing the art of local creatives? Why wouldn’t you? So much talent to draw from in the west. I love working with creatives and really see it as a partnership. I love what they bring to my space and I like to assist artists and makers bring their work into the marketplace. It is always an exchange of knowledge and I am forever grateful to be working amongst such inspiring people. Who has inspired you most, and how? The late Sarah Watt. She was a creative in every sense of the word. She was passionate, inspired, inspiring and sometimes scary. She was an amazing collaborator and really taught me the power of collaboration and partnerships. What is something people may be surprised to learn about you? Although I own a shop, I really, really hate shopping. Mary Long will be the guest speaker at the Rotary Club of Footscray’s annual fundraising dinner, in conjunction with the 2019 Footscray Art Prize, on June 22. Details: rotaryfootscray.org.au

Year 10 Information Evening Bayside P-12 College is an established senior school with a focus on academic achievement and transition to successful pathways. We are well equipped to support our students through this time. Specifically the Paisley Campus has:

Heard the news? Active Audiology brings affordability to high-tech hearing devices If you missed the big news from Active Audiology in last week’s Star Weekly Weekly, you might not know how affordable high-tech hearing devices now are at the Altona Clinic. In fact, the latest European-designed and manufactured hearing aids, normally costing about $4000, are available for just $1350 for a limited time. Clinic owner and audiologist Cris Ivanidis says they’re seeing good results from these latest devices. “We encourage people to come in for a simple hearing test, then take the new hearing aid home on a two-week free trial,” Cris says. “This way, they can test the device in their own environment and during regular activities.” Operating an independent clinic is very important to Cris and his highly skilled audiologist offsider Marina Opacak. It means that, because there are no commercial ties, patients can choose from a whole range of brands and models at varying price points. But, says Marina, finding the right hearing aid is

only part of the solution. “Even though our main job is to ‘fix’ their hearing loss, we know that people come to us to improve their lives. It’s not just about fitting a hearing aid and seeing them off,” she says. “We strive to understand what their daily lives look like and find a solution that’s going to make that daily routine feel easier. “Hearing is an important part of socialising, so if we can make people feel more confident and feel like themselves again, that’s really what motivates us most in our roles.” The government-accredited clinic provides free services and aids to pensioners and DVA Goldcard holders. Self-funded retirees and children older than four are treated as well, while tinnitus tests/diagnoses and custom-made noise plugs are also available.

The Year 10 Information Evening is a key event for students and their parents to attend. Families will learn about our Year 10 Program, the VCE opportunities available to Paisley students, receive important documents and have an opportunity to speak with key experienced staff. For any enquires or to arrange a school tour please contact Suzanne Towe - Assistant Principal on 9391 6666.

Property of the week

WILLIAMSTOWN 2/10 Clark Street, 3016 Sweeney Estate Agents Williamstown: 9399 9111 Sophisticated, sharp, sumptuous … they’re just three words that come to mind for this contemporary triumph. Designed by architect Tina Lindner, who also did the interior, the residence is awash with a glam that matches its prized locale – less than a block from The Strand waterfront. It spans three levels, one a bluestone-paved rooftop terrace, an area where the electric dumbwaiter (stopping all levels) comes in mighty handy and exemplifies design excellence. and eye-catching; materials and textures are rich and luxe; and the palette of cool soft-greys and whites is tempered by warm timbers. Timber batons are a recurring motif, first seen on the generous entry hall’s wall. Here, the staggered horizontal batons suggest a dynamic invitation to proceed, while in other spots they are vertical and form either accent or subtle screen. The entry hallway runs past main bathroom, laundry and the three fitted bedrooms before culminating in a study

with outdoor access. The expansive main bedroom has lavish storage and a sumptuous en suite with gorgeous tiling, a free-standing tub and matte-black tapware. And the shared bathroom is equally swish. At the top of open-tread American oak stairs emerges a stunning living hub, with an office/bedroom and neighbouring powder room at the back. American oak floorboards provide the anchor to a soaring ceiling and hefty bulkhead, while the dining zone has a bespoke lowboy and the sitting area has

bifolds (dressed again in dreamy sheers) that open to a private balcony. The showstopper kitchen has a stunning waterfall stone island bench, top-notch seamless 2pac cabinetry, beautiful stone splashbacks, matte-black tapware and a suite of seven Miele appliances. One of many perks at this place is the amazing carpeted cinema room that adjoins the double garage – and there are two more parking spots in the common area. This completely made over California bungalow is a contemporary delight while retaining beautiful ceiling plasterwork, stepped cornices and sash windows. Northern light beams into the lovely living hub, laid with spotted gum floorboards and with a gorgeous window seat. The spectacular kitchen, with a hint of French provincial, has loads of top-notch joinery, ample stone benches and all mod-cons. Three downstairs bedrooms share a smart bathroom with subway tiling, and the toilet is in the laundry. The upstairs main bedroom, with floorboards and built-in robes has a stylish, fully tiled en suite, while attic storage is abundant. Ducted heating, refrigerated cooling, ducted vacuum and extra floor/wall insulation are included. A delightful cubby house joins a shed in the garden. The block is about 460 square metres and the station and schools are within walking distance.

With 57 squares of living area this property offers lots of space as well as an appealing decor and high-quality appointments. Add in the solar-heated salt pool out back and the attraction goes up a further notch. So when the gigantic upstairs multi-purpose room is factored in, up it goes again. Four fitted bedrooms (five if study counted) include the lavish main with walk-robe, and en suite with dual basins, stone vanity and spa. A lounge room with floorboards has a feature gas fire, while the vast living hub – with second fireplace – has bifolds to undercover alfresco and pool. The extra-big kitchen, with waterfall stone benches, has abundant storage, walk-in pantry, glass splashback and all mod-cons. The block of about 800 square metres is a 10-minute walk from the Esplanade waterfront.

SEDDON 3-5 Charles Street, 3011 Barlow McEwan Tribe: 9391 1888

Price: Contact agent

On a block of about 865 square metres, with dual frontages to Charles and Pole streets, this property with two dwellings provides a rare chance to tap into huge potential. Subject to council approval, the land could be used to build a multi-unit development; create a high-quality four-dwelling development; or design and build a dream home in a highly desirable suburb. Another option is to enjoy two rental income streams while land banking for the future. So much is right on the doorstep: the bustling Yarraville shops, Footscray Central and Seddon’s eclectic cafe and shopping scene. Playgrounds, parks and well-regarded schools are also close by, and it’s a leisurely amble to the station – with frequent trains to Docklands and CBD just a few stops away. The house facing Charles Street has three bedrooms, a living-dining room, a separate kitchen-meals area, a bathroom, separate toilet and a laundry. Fine to live in as is, it has an old-school look that would respond well to a revamp. It also has a double garage. The second house has three bedrooms, an open study, shower room, toilet, laundry and an outdoor toilet attached to a shed, as well as a garage.

29 MARIBYRNONG & HOBSONS BAY STAR WEEKLY \ JUNE 5, 2019

SPORT Altona earns top billing By Lance Jenkinson Altona will rightfully take its place at the top of the Western Region Football League division 1 ladder entering the winter break. The Vikings have been the most consistent team in a competition full of surprises. Saade Ghazi’s side is as close to a sure bet as can be had in the top flight so far, having suffered one defeat in the opening seven rounds. And that was by the barest of margins – a one-point loss to Werribee Districts in round two. The Vikings are 6-1 and a game and percentage clear of the rest of the competition. “We’re happy as a football club at the moment, but there’s a long way to go,” Ghazi said. Altona had its second triple figure win of the season on Saturday. After toughing out a 22-point half–time lead, the Vikings put the pedal to the metal with a 13-goal-to-two second half to win by an even 100 points. While all the damage was done on the scoreboard in a ruthless second half, the Vikings set up their victory by keeping Sunshine at an arm’s length during a competitive first half. “You’ve got to give credit to Sunshine in the first half because it was a tough game,” Ghazi said. “I said to the boys, ‘You’ve got to be in the fight early and if you’re in it for long enough you should get out on the right side’ – and that’s what we did.” Patrick Rose was at his commanding best inside forward 50 for Altona. The lively forward booted eight goals and was nearly impossible to contain. “He came back to his best form,” Ghazi said. “He took some really good contested marks, led really well and kicked well.” The Vikings’ defence held firm to keep the Roos to just six goals for the day. Kevin Johnson was outstanding at full-back. “Two years ago he was playing division 2 at Yarraville Seddon,” Ghazi said. “He’s become a premier defender in division 1.” Jayden Post had a pearler at centre half-back and Tom Szanyi kept dangerous Roos small forward Daniel Castellano goalless. Lee Spiteri was impressive across half-back. In attack, Elliot Cavallaro was well held for much of the day, but his quality shone through with four goals. Omar Abou-Zeid contribued three goals in the runaway win.

Jets’ late run a winning plan Western Jets had a scintillating second half to overrun Bendigo Pioneers by 42 points in the NAB League at Downer Oval on Sunday. The Jets trailed by a goal at half-time, but turned the game around with an eight-goal-to-nil second half to run out big winners. In an incredible change of fortunes, the Pioneers were restricted to just three behinds in the last two quarters. Lucas Rocci led the charge for the Western Jets. Rocci racked up 34 disposals, 12 marks and six tackles in a dominant display. The other big ball winners for the Jets were Eddie Ford (22 disposals) and Bailey Ryan (20). Jonah Horo was a warrior defensively for the Jets, inflicting 15 tackles to go with his 17 possessions. Sam Clifford was a constant threat with four goals, while Daniel Pantalleresco and Luke Heaney added two apiece. Western Jets have moved up to fifth on the ladder with a 5-3 record. The Ryan O’Keefe-coached side will head to the country to take on fourth-placed Gippsland Power at Morwell Recreation Reserve on Saturday. Gritty Woodsmen delight in taking a premier scalp Spotswood is lurking in the rear vision mirror of the premiership front-runners in the Western Region Football League division 1. The Woodsmen have been ultra competitive against top four opposition in the first half of the season – but only on Saturday did they get their first big scalp. After honourable close losses to Altona and Werribee Districts, the Woodsmen were desperate to take four points off a title contender. The Woodsmen came from behind at quarter-time to overrun six-time defending premier Deer Park by 17 points away at John McLeod Oval. Woodsmen coach Anthony Eames was not surprised by a result that some would believe to be an upset and was thrilled with the comeback. “We went in pretty confident to be honest,” Eames said. “It was good to have a close game against a top side and win it. [27-point deficit] – we haven’t done that against Deer Park in my time at Spotty.” Spotswood had to work its way back from 21 points down at quarter-time to register the win. The Woodsmen trailed by as much as 27

early in the second term, but found a way to get to within five points at the main break. “The boys knew at half-time we were a massive chance if we just stuck to our structures,” Eames said. Spotswood was the dominant side in the second half, the Woodsmen kicking six goals to two to run out convincing winners. It was a victory built on defence, both in terms of limiting the supply to the dangerous Deer Park forward line and winning the one-on-one battles inside the defensive 50. “I’m not sure who’s kept them to 15 scoring shots recently, but that was certainly a focus for us,” Eames said. “I thought our boys stacked up well out of the backline.” Harley Walshe was a pillar of strength in Spotswood’s defence. Walshe was given the tough task of nullifying former Western Bulldogs forward Jack Redpath and kept him goalless. “I thought Harley Walshe played his best

game for the year on Redpath,” Eames said. “He did a terrific job.” Sam Davis wore the competition’s leading goalkicker, Deer Park forward Jase Perkins, like a glove. Perkins was restricted to one goal. Grant Williams kept Deer Park’s mosquito fleet quiet and John Dawson looked comfortable at this level in a key defensive post. Steven O’Bryan was superb offensively through the middle for Spotswood. The midfielder was able to make and break tackles at will. With Spotswood star Murray Boyd unavailable, Zach Del Grosso rucked one-out for most of the day and did a commendable job. Baxter Norton kicked three crucial goals for the Woodsmen. Spotswood will goes into Queen’s Birthday in third place and snapping at the heels of the top two. Lance Jenkinson

Struggling Gators watch yet another game slip away

Daniel Nichols’ strong shooting form is encouraging for the Altona Gators. (Luke Hemer)

Season 2019 is starting to become a cruel one for the Altona Gators in the Big V basketball men’s division 2. It has played out like a broken record for the Gators, fronting up to games with the best laid out plans, giving it their best shot and being in the contest late on, only for most games to slip out of their grasp when the whips get cracking late in the fourth. It has been happening week after week. The reality is, the Gators are a genuine team unit, but don’t have the star power to rely on to hit a big basket in the clutch. The Gators have a focus on promoting local players in favour of imports, which undoubtedly costs them games. “I think we’re executing better than most teams, but we’re just not putting a lid on it when it counts,” Gators coach Des Radoslovic said. “We’ve come up against some very talented players who have had some big finishes

to games against us.” Altona is on a five game losing streak. The Gators, sitting second-last with a 4-11 record, led at half-time in four of those five games before running out of petrol in the second half. Usually it is an opposition import that takes over in the second half of games and that was again the case in an 82-74 loss to RMIT Redbacks at the Altona Sports Centre on Sunday. Redbacks star Stephen Coffey was kept in check for the first half, but exploded after half-time to score 27 points and take the game away from the Gators. The Gators were without their premier big man James Till. Till tore ligaments in his ankle recently and is set for a long stint on the sidelines. It has forced the Gators into adding minutes to the workloads of already stretched players

CYs’ eyes on the prize

and it hurt them dearly against the Redbacks. “We’ve had a lot of injuries and a lot of banged up bodies this season, so there’s a lot of games down the stretch where fatigue really sets in,” Radoslovic said. Jovan Bojanic will be crucial to Altona’s chances going forward. Bojanic will take on an even bigger role in the paint in the absence of Till. Mitchell Clissold will also be called upon to log big minutes. Clissold played a season-high 35 minutes against RMIT. Daniel Nichols has returned to form in recent weeks and dropped 12 points after hitting four threes against the Redbacks. Altona will return to the court on June 16 when it entertains bottom-of-the-ladder Mornington Breakers. Lance Jenkinson

Williamstown CYMS has tackled all the challenges thrown its way to head into the Queen’s Birthday break undefeated and on top of the Victorian Amateur Football Association Premier C ladder. The CYs improved to 8-0 after a 33-point win over Marcellin that was frankly not their best showing of the season at Fearon Reserve on Saturday. CYs coach Mathew Montebello conceded his team might have had one eye on the bye week during the second half of Saturday’s win, but his players had done enough in a nine-goal second-quarter blitz to come away with a win. “I didn’t think we necessarily played overly well,” he said. “The second quarter we got on top of them, started to win the footy and were clean with our execution, which made a massive difference. “We came out after half-time probably thinking a little too much about the bye coming up. “I don’t think they expected Marcellin to come out the way they did [in the second half] … we had a firm discussion at three-quarter time about what it means to be the hunted and how preparing for that means you’ve got to be switched on all the time.” Williamstown CYMS has been business-like in the season to date. The CYs are yet to fully hit their straps, even though they are two games clear on top and seemingly untouchable at this stage. “I don’t think it’s like last year where we jumped out of the blocks, playing outstanding footy straight away,” Montebello said. “We’ve had to manage players, we’ve had players going in and out, we’ve had some inconsistencies within games and with cohesion. “But those challenges have been really good. We’ve been able to explore our depth a bit more and I think the boys have a better understanding of themselves. “That can’t be lost on a game like today and where everything is sitting in the big picture.” Williamstown CYMS knows all too well that June form is not a key indicator of premiership form. The CYs went through last season’s home-and-away rounds undefeated, only to be bundled out of the finals in straight sets. Montebello does not need to remind his players of the growth that is needed between now and finals. “There’s a lot of room for improvement and there always is,” Montebello said. “We saw in 2018 the proof of that. “You can finish on top of the ladder and be the most dominant side and then in the finals you can realise there were things that you didn’t get right. “That’s a big motivation for us. Williamstown had a flat second half in a 20-point loss to Box Hill Hawks on the road at Box Hill City Oval in the VFL on Saturday. After leading by three points at half-time, the Seagulls managed only three more goals for the rest of the game. Jake Greiser was the Seagulls’ best with 25 disposals and five marks, while Jaylon Thorpe kicked three goals. Footscray was pipped by one point in a low-scoring game against Geelong at the VU Whitten Oval on Sunday. The Cats won 35-34. Fletcher Roberts, Rhylee West and Anthony Scott were named best for the Bulldogs.

Altona Magic has lost consecutive home games for the first time this season in NPL Victoria. The Magic went down 2-1 to Melbourne Knights at Paisley Park on Saturday night – their fourth loss in five games. Robert Stambolziev scored an equaliser for the Magic in the 89th minute, but it was to no avail as Hamish Watson netted a winner in stoppage time. In the FFA Cup, the Magic had a comfortable 3-0 win away to Eltham Redbacks in the sixth round on Tuesday night. New recruit Hassan Jalloh scored a hat-trick for the Magic. Altona will host Moreland Zebras in the seventh round at Paisley Park on a date to be determined.

about 2018 too much, but it sits in our head that until we get to the end where we want to. There’s a constant improvement that’s required and constant reviewing.” Nick Blackney was the standout for Williamstown CYMS in the victory over Marcellin. Blackney, a ruck-forward, jumped up off his sick bed after suffering with flu and produced one of his best games of the season. “He was crook as yesterday and he played as

good a game as I’ve seen anyone play in the last two or three years,” Montebello said. “He would’ve taken a dozen contested marks. He played 50-50 in the ruck and was roving his own taps and creating his own centre clearances – that’s how dominant he was. “Any time the ball went anywhere near him, he just engulfed it.” Jack Gialamatzis and Damon Tucker were superb in defence for CYs, with Lachlan Fairley leading the way in attack with three goals.

City West Falcons have made it 10 straight wins in the Victorian Netball League championship division. The Falcons’ latest victim was Hawks Netball, which they demolished 63-36 at the State Netball and Hockey Centre on Wednesday night. The win keeps the Marg Lind-coached Falcons a game-and-a-half clear on top of the ladder after 10 rounds. The Falcons will face finals-chasing Casey Demons at the SNHC on Wednesday night.
