Fitness group banned By Goya Dmytryshchak A Williamstown exercise group has been banned from training at John Morley Reserve in the Strand after 15 years. Step into Life Williamstown owner Jason O’Donnell said Hobsons Bay council had advised him the group would be prohibited from using the reserve after June 30. He said the council had installed exercise equipment in the Strand to encourage health and fitness, but was now preventing his group from using it. “It’s ridiculous – there’s no common sense,” Mr O’Donnell said. “We’re not a boot camp … we train about being active and living healthier and fitter
lifestyles. We have not received any noise complaints, nor have we had any incidents with members of the community using the area to visit, look out at views, have picnics or use the exercise path, so I find it hard to understand why after June 30 we will no longer have a permit for this area.” He said he offered a “compromise” of using a corner of Commonwealth Reserve from 6am, but the council rejected the suggestion, saying the reserve was unsuitable due to having a high volume of visitors and events such as weddings. “There’s never been a wedding at 6am or tourists at 6 in the morning there when it’s dark,” Mr O’Donnell said. Mr O’Donnell said the council charged the highest permit rate in Australia. He said his
annual fee of about $3000 a year was more than 10 times what he would be charged by councils such as Port Phillip and Yarra. Hobsons Bay mayor Jonathon Marsden said some sites that had been historically used by trainers were no longer considered suitable for individual and group training. “It is acknowledged that Step into Life Williamstown have used John Morley Reserve and other sites in Hobsons Bay for several years without obtaining a permit,” he said. “During this time, noise complaints have been received, along with complaints about the group using council furniture for training sessions. “In December, 2018, Step into Life were charged a discounted rate of $528 for a
seven-month permit to use council’s public open space for training.” Cr Marsden said John Morley Reserve primarily functioned as an area for passive recreation with its historic cannons, picnic tables and chairs providing views over the bay. Council officers have updated the group’s permit to include use of other Williamstown reserves, including Robertson and Fearon reserves, and have suggested the most suitable training spaces would be Greenwich, RJ Long, Hatt and Gloucester reserves. Cr Marsden said the council was reviewing how personal training permits were issued, including fees and charges, which would be benchmarked against other councils.

School’s housing plans opposed By Goya Dmytryshchak Plans to use St Mary’s Primary School land for social housing and a 34-dwelling development are being opposed by more than 200 people who have signed a petition. Archpriest Michael Kalka, who is responsible for the parish of Mary Help of Christians in Altona, said the church’s plans were in the early stages. A petition with more than 200 signatures was this month presented to Father Michael.
“As parents, friends, grandparents, family members and local residents with children at St Mary’s Primary School, Altona, we have concerns about the large-scale residential developments proposed within the school boundaries and adjoining parish properties as outlined in the masterplan,” the petition states. “We strongly oppose the suggestion that the school oval is reduced in size to allow for development of accommodation to be potentially used for social housing [in McBain Street].
“We believe that a 34-unit development on Sargood Street is excessive and should be reconsidered due to the issues that may present relating to traffic, parking, drainage, overlooking the school et cetera”. The first draft master plan was issued on February 26 and the second on April 4. Father Michael said the proposed social housing would accommodate the elderly and single-parent families. He said the response to draft two showed “fairly strong” opposition from school parents
Pile light finds her way back home A Gellibrand lighthouse destroyed when hit by a ship in 1976 has returned home to Williamstown. The National Trust has gifted the Gellibrand Pile Light to Seaworks and it was installed outside the back of the Nelson Place building late last week. Built in 1906, the pile light guarded the point until it was struck by the ship Melbourne Trader in 1976, on the morning of June 21. The fog horn on the pile light wasn’t operating when it was hit by the 7000-tonne vessel and left hanging precariously. The harbourmaster of the day ordered the pile light be set on fire to reduce the risk to his men. The lantern and dome were salvaged and donated to the National Trust by the Victorian Public Works Department in 1978. For many years, the reconstructed pile light was on show at the Polly Woodside maritime museum in Port Melbourne. Seaworks and many Williamstown residents have long rallied to bring her home. Seaworks executive officer Glenn Jones said there was some restoration work yet to be carried out on the pile light. “For what it’s been through, it’s in good condition,” he said. “I think if anyone gets set on fire and put into the bay, it’s looking good for that. “It’s a nice story and I think a lot of people will be really thrilled to have it back home … this is quite an important piece for Williamstown.” National Trust chief executive Simon Ambrose said he was delighted to see the pile light returned to the Seaworks precinct. “We hope the historical, cultural and social significance of the navigation light, built in 1906, will be on display to many more at its new home in Williamstown,” he said.
unhappy about losing a part of the school oval. “So, draft three, when that’s issued, will reflect that,” he said. “I hear the concerns of the parents and that will be reflected when we get draft three published. “However, I’ve made it very, very clear in every meeting that I’m not selling land. “I’m actually not doing anything at this stage other than having a discussion with my community.”
Funding boost for caring community The peak body for Victoria’s carers has received $160,000 to boost its support for the hundreds of thousands of carers around the state. Footscray-based Carers Victoria will receive $160,000 to help implement the Victorian Carer Strategy, which aims to support carers providing support to partners, family members and friends. Developed with input from carers and peak bodies, the strategy identified priority areas to remove financial stress for carers and help them to remain healthy, engaged, and able to access respite and other support. Minister for Disability, Ageing and Carers, Luke Donnellan, visited Carers Victoria recently to launch the strategy and announce the funding boost to the organisation. Carers Victoria chief executive Scott Walker said the organisation played a pivotal role in developing the strategy, which highlights the unique and specific needs of carers across areas such as employment, health, education and financial security. “On behalf of the board and staff of Carers Victoria, I’d like to thank the Andrews Labor government for their commitment to supporting carers in our community and their acknowledgement of the diversity of carers,” he said. “Our vision is an Australia that values and supports the contribution that carers make, both to the people they care for and to the community as a whole.” Mr Walker said it was pleasing to see the minister take time to listen to staff and carers at the launch.

Asbestos clean-up
Asbestos remnants first detected last year at Bruce Comben Reserve in Altona Meadows have been cleaned up by Hobsons Bay council. The material was illegally dumped by an unknown contractor who gained unauthorised access to the site. The first clean-up was completed in December but a recent inspection identified small fragments of asbestos had surfaced. They were removed last Thursday and a cap will be installed on the site to ensure no more remnants surface.

Sleep school’s $9m lift By Benjamin Millar Parents in Melbourne’s west will sleep a little easier thanks to a state government spending splash at a key local parenting service. Footscray’s Tweddle Child and Family Health Service will receive a $9 million makeover that will increase capacity and reduce waiting times at the busy centre. Tweddle helps parents suffering exhaustion due to unsettled behaviour and poor sleeping patterns of their babies or toddlers. The service, which celebrates its 100th anniversary next year, will receive the funding as part of a $214 million package to assist early parenting centres across Victoria.
‘‘
The first three years … have an enormous impact - Kirsty Evans
’’
Tweddle clinical services-nursing director Kirsty Evans said the redevelopment would help reduce the waiting list from the current three months. “The first three years of a baby’s life have an enormous impact on how they will learn and grow throughout their lifetime, with more than one million new neural connections forming every second, so sleep is vital,” she said. Parenting Research Centre research shows nearly half of Australian parents with babies and nearly a third of parents of toddlers and preschool-aged children report problems with their children’s sleep. Parents in Tweddle’s residential program can speak with a psychologist, receive around-the-clock support and meet other parents facing similar challenges.

“Being chronically sleep deprived impacts on the ability of mums and dads to develop secure early attachment with their babies, make decisions, return to work, drive safely and look after their own health,” Ms Evans said. Premier Daniel Andrews and Health Minister Jenny Mikakos visited Tweddle last week to announce the $9 million upgrade.
“We’re giving new parents the support they need – every step of the way,” Mr Andrews said. Footscray MP Katie Hall said Tweddle had provided support to families across the western suburbs for 99 years. “This funding will ensure they are able to help families for another 99 years and beyond,” she said.

Budget pluses for inner west Footscray’s new hospital and inner-west schools are the big local winners from the 2019-20 Victorian budget. The budget, handed down on Monday, earmarks $1.43 billion for construction of the 504-bed Footscray Hospital. The new hospital will be built opposite Victoria University on the corner of Geelong and Ballarat roads, allowing almost 15,000 additional patients to be treated and an extra 20,000 emergency department visits each year. The budget provides $20.25 million for the next stage of the Footscray Learning Precinct, including $16.12 million for Gilmore Girls College and $4.12 million for Footscray City College. The budget confirms $3.7 million of funding for a Vietnamese cultural centre and museum in Footscray, $1 million for preliminary designs for the Whitten Oval Master Plan and $1 million for a new sensory park at Pipemakers Park. The government delivered pre-election promises of $4.7 million to expand Altona College, $3.8 million for upgrades at Altona North Primary School and up to 100 new and upgraded carpark spaces at Aircraft Station in Laverton. The government will also spend $2.1 billion transforming train services on the Sunbury line, upgrading every station to enable the rollout of new High Capacity Metro Trains. West stays ‘relatively’ affordable By Melissa Heagney/ Heagney/Domain Home buyers looking for a bargain close to the CBD should be searching in Melbourne’s inner-western suburbs, new analysis shows. Data from Domain’s latest house price report showed Maidstone and West Footscray were the best buys for those looking to live within 10 kilometres of the CBD, with median house prices under $800,000. Maidstone, West Footscray, Footscray and Maribyrnong’s median house prices of between
$723,750 and $843,000 made them the four cheapest suburbs to buy a home on land within 10km of the CBD. West Footscray ($387,000) and Footscray ($405,000) were also the cheapest places to buy a unit close to the city after Travancore ($347,500). Domain research analyst Eliza Owen said the March quarter data showed that while these suburbs were offering some good buys, they were not within everyone’s price range. “The median for within the radius of the
area [within 10 kilometres of the city] is $1.4 million,” Ms Owen said, “so these suburbs are relatively affordable, not absolutely affordable.” Jas Stephens auctioneer George Alexander said the cooling market had made the inner-west more attractive for buyers looking for a home or apartments. Footscray house prices fell 2.3 per cent over the year to March 2019, according to Domain data. Mr Alexander said those buying in suburbs such as Footscray, West Footscray and
Maidstone had previously been renting in the inner-northern suburbs. “They like the inner-suburban feel and want to get in while the area is still gentrifying,” he said. Families were buying into West Footscray, with unrenovated period homes selling for between $600,000 and $700,000. “West Footscray has bigger houses on bigger blocks, and there are the primary schools and the dog parks there, and there’s the Maribyrnong River,” Mr Alexander said.
Free to a good owner An Altona house is being given away for free. But there’s a catch – the new oweners must take the house away, rather than moving in. The Belmar Avenue house is being advertised on various social media groups to be removed. Its seller, Kylie West, said her family was offering the original 1952 weatherboard house at the front of the property, as an alternative to demolishing it, so they can rebuild there. Her family bought the house in 2010 for $515,000. The house, which is ready to move into, has three bedrooms, one bathroom, a renovated kitchen with stone benches and SMEG appliances and original hardwood floors. Ms West said her seven-year-old boy was sentimental about the house and would like to see it go to a good owner rather than be torn down. “I raised my baby here, so there’s lots of memories associated with all the corners … he learnt to walk here,” she said. “It’s been really
hard making this decision because he’s quite emotionally attached – this is his house, he says. He said, ‘I want it to be still loved, mama’.” The house will be available for removal in about two months. “We did a small reno on it when we first moved in,” Ms West said. “My partner and I have always loved renovating. The rear extension … that doesn’t come with the house, it’s on a slab. “Ideally, it’s going to be a project for someone to take and put somewhere and then renovate it. We want the house to be preserved.” People can view the house on sites such as Gumtree or contact Ms West directly at freelittlehouse@hotmail.com. Play honours father’s choice By Goya Dmytryshchak Ray Godbold made headlines when, in defiance of the law, he was published with Dr Rodney Syme on the front page of The Age with a bottle of life-ending drug Nembutal in front of them. Now, Ray’s son, Williamstown’s Rory Godbold, has written a fictional play stemming from his father’s story, coinciding with Victoria’s voluntary assisted dying laws coming in to effect on June 19. Ray, who died in 2015 at age 59, had been suddenly diagnosed with terminal oesophageal cancer.
‘‘
He decided that wasn’t what he wanted for his family - Rory Godbold
’’
Rory said at the time his father had been working as a palliative care nurse, particularly in cancer care. “Facing his own death, knowing how it would probably play out, he decided that wasn’t what he wanted for his family and that wasn’t what he wanted for himself, so he started to look in to avenues where he could take control over that situation,” Rory said. “He got in touch with Rodney Syme, who’s a urologist who has for about 30 years been helping people with advice on how to end their lives – Rodney calls it the key to the fire escape. “Then, what came for us was the unexpected that I think dad was trying to avoid … there was a lot of delirium, a lot of confusion; it’s like all of a sudden he had dementia. “It was the day he died that he wanted to take it [the Nembutal] but based on the condition he was in, he couldn’t.

New chapter for By Goya Dmytryshchak Mr Walker, the failed guide dog immortalised in a book series, last week visited children at Westbourne Grammar School. Head of the Williamstown campus, Mario Chrisanthou, said the year 2 children had written letters addressed to Mr Walker after reading The Tales of Mr Walker by Jess Black. The book was inspired by the real-life Mr Walker, a Guide Dog Ambassador who calls Park Hyatt Melbourne home.

Mr Shepheard said it was a visit to remember. “It was lovely, it was gorgeous,” he said. “They were so sweet and loved seeing Walker, and the teachers said, they’ll remember this forever – to have a fantasy story and then the real character comes to life.” One of the letters to Mr Walker, written by pupil Tristan, congratulated him for the Tales of Mr Walker being nominated for the Australian Book Industry Awards “Some of my favourite events in the book were when you had a bath and you didn’t like it,” Tristan wrote. “I also liked it when the piano player came and you leapt on his hat and when you splattered paint on the robbers.” Charlie wrote: “Some of my favourite events from the book were when the painters were
robbers and when Mr Walker fell down the laundry chute.” Another pupil, Sienna, wrote that her favourite event was when Mr Walker got a new home. “I have a dog called Money,” she wrote. “I think you would be good friends together.”

Rail sheds under a cloud
Williamstown’s measles alert
By Timna Jacks/The Age Perhaps you wouldn’t expect to find a Millennial restoring a century-old train at a Newport workshop for fun. However Sam Barnes is one of several 20-something men and women volunteering at the historic rail workshops in Melbourne’s industrial west, soaking up the history of Victoria’s old steam locomotives and learning from their seniors how to take care of them. “There’s generational knowledge that you can’t pick up from a book,” 23-year-old Mr Barnes says.

“It’s a dying art.” Mr Barnes is part of several self-funded rail preservation organisations operating out of the old Newport rail workshops for more than 40 years. The volunteers protect and restore the vintage stock without charge to the government. But many fear that it will all come to an end, which would put a stop to the 60 days a year that members of the public can board the old trains as they run on the state’s railways. Victoria’s state railway agency VicTrack is refusing to guarantee the renewal of the groups’ lease, which is due to expire next year. VicTrack is reviewing the site, and has brought in consultants to oversee a new strategy, which includes possibly relocating the trains and rail groups. The heritage-listed workshops would not be

Diversity a focus at Altona Refinery The team at Mobil Altona Refinery continue to prioritise the development and retainment of a diverse workforce in order to enhance its overall business. “The petroleum industry is a highly competitive business, and the market landscape continues to evolve,” said Altona Refinery Technical Manager Leona Chua. “A constant flow of new, fresh ideas and viewpoints, and challenging paradigms is needed to be greater at what we do than anyone else to win. “The diversity of thought, learning from each other, and an environment where everyone feels valued and knows they can add value, is essential to compete. “We know that the best way of achieving this is to cast a wide net – to have a diverse, balanced workforce,” she said. A number of years ago, Altona Refinery embarked on a strategy to recruit more women and this has given the company a competitive edge in the quest for the best technical minds. While women still only make up a small proportion of the refinery’s workforce, they contribute a wide range of important positions. 10 MARIBYRNONG & HOBSONS BAY STAR WEEKLY \ MAY 29, 2019

A baby is among six Victorians who have contracted measles after being infected by a traveller visiting from Vietnam. The man, aged in his 30s, attended family events in Mornington on May 4 and St Kilda on May 5. He was put in isolation in hospital after returning to Vietnam. Before returning overseas, the man visited sites in Williamstown, Moonee Ponds, North Melbourne, Coburg, Mount Waverley, Mornington, and St Kilda. He attended Priceline Pharmacy in Douglas Parade, Williamstown, on Monday, May 6 between 4pm and 5pm. Victorian chief health officer Angie Bone said people often contracted measles and became infectious before showing any symptoms and easily pass on the disease, which can cause complications and even death in rare cases. The latest six patients, who would have caught the disease at the family events, may have infected other people across Melbourne before they were showing any symptoms. During that period, they visited the CBD, Geelong, East Malvern, Chadstone, Noble Park, Hawthorn, Oakleigh, Mount Waverley, Fairfield, South Wharf, Armadale, Abbotsford, East Melbourne, Baxter, Frankston, Karingal and St Kilda Road. Dr Bone urged anyone with symptoms to see a GP or emergency department, but to call ahead before visiting to avoid the further spread of infection. Rachel Eddie/The Age

Racism keeps police busy By Alesha Capone Police in the state’s north west metro region have responded to hundreds of prejudiciallymotivated crimes within a five-year period, with more than half of the offences related to a victim’s race or ethnicity. Victoria Police data shows there were 528 “prejudicially-motivated” crimes recorded in the northwest – which covers 14 municipalities, including Wyndham, Brimbank, Hobsons Bay, Maribyrnong, Melton, Moonee Valley, Hume and Whittlesea – between January 2014 and December 2018.
This included 341 offences related to race/ ethnicity, 121 related to religion, 111 related to sexual orientation, 94 related to political beliefs and 21 related to disability. Brimbank’s Acting Police Inspector Terrence West said people who experienced or witnessed prejudice-motivated crime, including online crime, should report it to the police. “Victoria Police is here to help – we do not tolerate violence and we take all crime seriously, including that which is motivated by prejudice, racism or discrimination,” he said. Acting Inspector West said crime reports indicated that prejudice-motivated crime could
occur in public places, retail environments and residential premises. “This may include threats to kill, threats to inflict serious injury, stalking, assault, destroying or damaging property, including graffiti and threats to destroy or damage property,” he said. “We know that crimes motivated by prejudice cause serious harm to victims, often leaving them, and their communities, feeling vulnerable, threatened and isolated. “There is no justification for prejudice-motivated violence here in Victoria.” Acting Inspector West said Victoria Police
has a number of Multicultural Liaison Officers (MLOs) who could help victims of prejudice-based crime to make a report. WEstjustice chief executive Denis Nelthorpe said the organisation sometimes heard from clients who were subjected to racist comments in public. Mr Nelthorpe said while some people who committed such acts could be mentally ill or affected by drugs or alcohol, it could also occur when people were “uneducated or racist”. Victims of racism or discrimination can contact their local police station, or triple-0 in an emergency. Crime Stoppers: 1800 333 000.

The good oil on Aussie life By Benjamin Millar Navigating the challenges of daily life can be tricky enough for those who grew up in Australia. Throw in language difficulties and cultural quirks and the whole experience can prove all the more daunting. That’s where people like Flower Tavrou come in. Ms Tavrou has been volunteering for more than a decade to help newly arrived refugees and migrants settle into their new homes in Australia. As a volunteer with migrant and refugee settlement agency AMES Australia in Footscray, she helps newly arrived people to learn English and assists with the day-to-day tasks and challenges of living in Australian society. Ms Tavrou, who was honoured at a recent AMES Australia event to mark Volunteer Week (May 20-26), said she loved helping people with their new lives. “It’s all about helping people learn about how things work in Australia,” she said. “Everything from myki cards and the public transport system to shopping, doctor’s appointments and all of the things that are specific to Australia.” An AMES Australia survey to coincide with Volunteer Week found volunteers overwhelmingly believed they personally benefitted directly through helping others. The survey of 85 of the organisation’s volunteers found they not only feel the experience builds their skills and knowledge,

but that they also develop friendships and gain a sense of personal satisfaction through contributing. Ms Tavrou shares the view, explaining her volunteering had given her as much as she had put in. “I have learned so much about diverse communities over the years and I have met so many lovely and interesting people,” she said. “Volunteering has given me so much and I would recommend it to anyone.”
Students in flying visit Altona North Primary School pupils last week received a visit from the Royal Flying Doctor Service, who literally dropped by with a plane. Teacher Alexa Nania said the schoolchildren were excited to experience the RFDS Aeromedical Simulator – a life-size replica of the fuselage of a flying doctor plane equipped with stretchers, communications, oxygen, suction and other equipment. “The staff and students at Altona North Primary School had a pyjama day as a fundraiser, with all proceeds raised being
donated to the royal flying doctors,” Ms Nania said. “The grade 3-6 students were lucky enough to experience a virtual reality simulation of a typical flight and were able to go inside a life-size replica of a flying doctors plane to see how it all works. “It was an invaluable, real-life experience for the Altona North Primary School students. They all had a wonderful day.” Goya Dmytryshchak

MY PLACE Seaholme’s Joan Kent decided to retire from active volunteering at the Altona Laverton Historical Society after turning 91. She speaks with Goya Dmytryshchak. What’s your connection to Hobsons Bay?
Not really.
We’ve lived here for about 25 years, I suppose – in this house, too. Originally, we were in Geelong for three years. Then we went to Sunshine – my husband was in the railways – and we were there for about 22 years. I worked in the post office for quite a few years. I started off delivering telegrams first and then after a while they started to go down in numbers and the post office started delivering parcels. Sometimes we would have parcels a metre wide from overseas. And then we went to St Albans. Then we came over here.
Can you tell me about your volunteering with the Altona Laverton Historical Society?
What are some of the changes you’ve seen? Along the Esplanade, when we first came, there were three or four houses that were double storey and the rest were all single. But of course, if you went out there and looked now, you’d be lucky to find four that were single storey and the others would be all double storey. What don’t you like about Seaholme – or is there anything that could be improved?
Do you think it’s important to preserve history for future generations? Definitely. It would be a pity if it just disappeared … all the people coming on, the young people, wouldn’t know anything about it – or not properly know anything. What are some of your favourite places across Hobsons Bay? We used to go up to the homestead and Ethel and I would go to Harbour Inn [Chinese Restaurant]. We used to go for a drive along the Esplanade. I like the pier, but I preferred to walk along the Esplanade. We just seemed to go anywhere because we’d see something when we were out. We had a car – an old Vauxhall.
(Supplied)
I like having the beach so close … when you drive along there, you see the black swans and all the seagulls, and there’s something to be always seen with the men in their boats, whether they’re going out or whether they’re just moving along or coming in. There’s always something to see.

What do you like about Seaholme?
I just came here and I suppose I just went there for something to do. I met Ethel Muller there [late Altona resident and World War II nurse who died in 2018, aged 101]. Early days, it was only Ethel and myself who used to go to the Altona Homestead on a Sunday afternoon. Then, back about four years ago, I wasn’t able to walk so much because I’ve got a wonky ankle … that’s why I’ve gone up now for about three or four years just to sit in a chair in the lounge room. We’d all finish up having a talk unless someone came in from the public to disturb us.

Williamstown pharmacy takes the next step Even a simple trip with the family to a botanic park to play and eat on a sunny winter’s day can throw up unexpected needs that require a quick dash to the pharmacy – medications left at home, sunscreen (even winter sun can have a bite), lip balm for wind-chapped lips, replacing lost sunglasses. National Pharmacies have seen them all.. They have been looking after holiday seekers, day trippers and others for more than 14 years. As Williamstown has changed and grown, National Pharmacies has now gone through some change and growth of its own and opened a new store on Douglas Parade. Jeri Tsoukalas from National Pharmacies says the store is a fantastic addition to the local area. “It continues to provide the health services and products that locals [and holiday makers] have come to rely on, but is also now introducing products previously not available in the area,” she says. National Pharmacies are stocking fragrances, skincare and cosmetics from leading international prestige brands, making trips into the city to find products a thing of the past. The store has dedicated beauty consultation rooms allowing customers to experience products and receive treatments, many of which make wonderful gifts. “National Pharmacies Williamstown is actually
part of a bigger, iconic pharmacy group in South Australia. We are known for our range of cosmetic and fragrance products, as well as our great service. We are so excited we can now offer all this to our Victorian customers and members,” Jeri continues. “Our membership program and benefits mean that these products are at a reduced/discounted price – often less than you would be paying duty-free or online.” But the new store isn’t just about the trappings of beauty. The larger layout includes private consulting rooms so customers can discuss health concerns in a more private space. Pharmacists provide vaccinations for flu and whooping cough in the treatment rooms, and no appointment is required. “Vaccinations are an example of health services that are now available through pharmacies and it’s a great extension of our health care system,” Jeri says. “National Pharmacies help patients with health screening for bowel cancer, and managing asthma, diabetes and weight, as well as assistance with medication schedules and supplements.” National Pharmacies, 42-44 Douglas Parade, Williamstown. A nifty corner shop conversion with an intriguing face to the street, this residence certainly has a claim to distinction. It simultaneously puts “living on the street” in a whole new light and residents in touch with the soul-pulse of the neighbourhood. Revamped to a high level, the house retains romantic detail, such as stepped cornices on high ceilings, deep skirts, and a boarded ceiling in one room and a cast-iron fireplace (with gorgeous tiles and surround) in another. The palette ranges through greys and

charcoal; either full-height sheers or roller blinds dress windows; and polished floorboards are laid virtually all through. The first room beyond entry is a spacious lounge room that externally skirts the corner footpath. This is the space for post-dinner sit-downs, whether to have a cosy read in the warmth from the split-system or catch the latest movie – or set up a laptop workstation to hit the other sort of books. A long hallway heads north from here to the meals zone and kitchen, passing on the way the three fitted bedrooms, and the
bathroom adjoining the laundry with toilet. The bathroom, with white tiling, is simple and modern, with separate tub and shower. Which spacious bedroom best serves as the main is up for grabs. One has that fireplace as trump card; another has a rich, inviting palette of mid-grey wall paint and white trims; and the third is all about neutrals. Two of them also have a split-system, the third in the meals zone. The sleek kitchen, with a waterfall stone island brekkie bench (for three) that matches the grey shade of the glass

splashback, has loads of white seamless cupboards and all the shiny mod-cons. It also has plenty of cred as interactive entertainment hub, connecting as it does with a covered deck via bifolds. And beyond the deck, there’s a spacious paved courtyard – with nicely planted gardens each side – that meets the rear garage and adjoining toilet. The station, the Strand waterfront and Newport Park are a five-minute stroll away. Carole Levy 21 MARIBYRNONG & HOBSONS BAY STAR WEEKLY \ MAY 29, 2019

Three fitted bedrooms up top include the large main which has access to a private balcony with Rush Reserve views, as well as a walk-in robe behind an island wall, and a sleek fully tiled dual-basin en suite with designer tapware. Downstairs, there’s an open lounge room/study, laundry and powder room, and an expansive living area filled with light. NEWpORT 22 Chalmers Lane, 3015 Greg Hocking Elly Partners: 8387 0000
Price: $790,000 – $850,000
As well as rocking a well-designed contemporary look, this spacious townhouse also offers a handy address. It’s within a 10-minute amble of the train station and well-regarded Leroys Cafe on Mason Street, and less than half that to Newport Lakes reserve and primary school. The residence has floorboards all through the ground floor, which comprises a spacious living room with the kitchen at its centre, along with a powder room which also has external access – linking nicely with the deck out back. A mix of floaty pale-grey sheers and roller blinds dress windows, and wall paint is white, carpet grey. The all-white kitchen, with a Caesarstone-topped island bench for three, has plenty of storage including a cupboard pantry, a glass splashback and 900mm cooker and a dishwasher. Timber stairs head up to the three carpeted bedrooms and main bathroom. Each good-sized bedroom has a walk-in robe, while the main has a fully tiled en suite with a big shower. Double sliding doors open from the dining zone to a deck which is rimmed by dense leafiness. A wall mural adds a cheeky urban note and makes the area even more inviting. Ducted heating and refrigerated cooling stay on top of Melbourne’s climate extremes, and the garage has internal entry via the dining zone.

SPORT Loss ends Newport’s winning streak but not its spirit Newport’s emergence as a genuine finals’ contender has been one of the pleasant surprises of an enthralling opening six rounds in the Western Region Football League division 2. After four consecutive wins, the Porters finally met their match in the all-conquering Wyndhamvale at Wyndham Vale South Reserve on Saturday, but just the fact they were involved in a top-of-the-table clash a third of the way into the season shows how far the Ziggy Kadour-coached side has come. Newport captain Munir El Houli has been impressed with his team’s commitment. “We didn’t really expect to be in this position this early in, but we’ve worked really hard,” he said. Newport’s winning streak came to an end at the hands of premiership front-runner Wyndhamvale in a 55-point loss. The Porters were not left deflated, nor were they shocked, because they had planned to face the Falcons’ best.
Abdullah El-Hassan gets a kick out of the pack for Newport. (Damjan Janevski)
While they were disappointed not to continue their winning run, they gained some valuable insight into the best team in the league. “We didn’t think because they struggled in division 1 and came back that they weren’t going to be any good,” El Houli said. “They were always going to be good, they’ve
always been solid even when they didn’t have the success, so they’re definitely the benchmark.” The positive to come out of the day for Newport was its willingness to fight until the bitter end. The Porters’ best football came late in the game, which is a sign of a team with good character. After kicking just two goals in the first three quarters, Newport out-scored the hosts four goals to one in the fourth quarter to add some much-needed respectability to the scoreboard. “We did continue to work hard as much as we could, even though a lot of us were fasting [for Ramadan] and it was hard for us, as it has been the last couple of weeks,” El Houli said. Newport will take on Point Cook Centrals at A.W. Langshaw Reserve on Saturday. Elsewhere in division 2, West Footscray had a stirring one-point win over arch-rivals North Footscray at Hansen Reserve. David
Ismail kicked three crucial goals for Wests. Yarraville Seddon was comfortable 48-point victors over Manor Lakes on a day when Alex Bouris bobbed up for three goals. Parkside went down by 20 points on the road to Point Cook Centrals. In division 1, Altona and Spotswood consolidated their places in the top four with commanding 54-point wins. Altona, sparked by four goals from Patrick Rose, beat Caroline Springs, while Spotswood, led by four goals apiece from Gareth Newton and Steven O’Bryan, brought down St Albans. In division 3, Braybrook slaughtered a struggling North Sunshine by 211 points. Two of Brookers’ players kicked double figure goals with Paul Cutajar-Milosev booting 11 and Nick Gregson with 10. Laverton was on the receiving end of an ugly 132-point loss to Glen Orden. Lance Jenkinson
Blues love a bit of luck By Lance Jenkinson Where luck might have deserted it in some games earlier in the season, Williamstown had the benefit of a bit of good fortune in a 2-0 win over Sebastopol Vikings in Football Victoria men’s state league 3 north-west at JT Gray Reserve on Saturday. The Blues have experienced a few teething problems in their newly constructed backline, so an ounce of luck was warmly received. It helped them claim a third clean sheet for the season and build more confidence in their defence. Blues team manager Henrik Nielson was delighted with the defensive outcome. “We didn’t want to let any goals in and the boys looked quite good defensively,” he said. “At the same time, we were probably a little bit lucky because they had a couple of shots that hit the crossbar. We could’ve easily copped a goal or two, but we got the job done.” Williamstown was the dominant team in May. The Blues went undefeated for the whole month, winning three of their four games. Nielson has been encouraged by the Blues recent run of form, but even prior to that he was fairly impressed by the brand of football his team played. “I think we’re beginning to get the mix right,” he said. “If we can avoid injuries, hopefully we’ll finish the first half of the season well and then we’ll see where that gets us for the back end.” Williamstown’s attack is firing on all cylinders, with the Blues popping in 11 goals in four matches in May. Exciting winger Abdigafar Omar set the ball rolling for the Blues against Sebastopol with a goal after three minutes. Alex Vlassis scored from a free kick in the 24th minute. A week earlier, hard-working front man Graham Bell, an off season signing from Whittlesea United, had scored a double against the Western Eagles. “We’re looking good up front,” Nielson said. “We don’t just rely on one or two to score goals.” That momentum is starting with a settled midfield that includes captain Aleks Dimitrijevic, Ismael Mohamed and Cody Nagy. That trio has proven hard to contain. Williamstown is fourth on the ladder with 15 points from nine games. The Blues will hit the road to play sixth-placed Craigieburn City on Saturday. Elsewhere in the state leagues, Yarraville Glory made it four games unbeaten in a 2-2 draw with North Sunshine Eagles in state league 1. It might have felt like a loss for the Glory, though, after it had grabbed a two-goal

advantage thanks to Daniel Anagnostopoulos and Steve Georgakakis. Once the Glory went down to 10 men through a second yellow card to Andrew Taylor, the Eagles made them pay with two late goals. Altona City lost for the second time in three weeks and tumbled to third in the process. City was beaten 1-0 by Sydenham Park, which leapfrogged them on the ladder. In state league 2, Altona East Phoenix had yet another one-goal loss, this time a 3-2 defeat to Moreland United. It was a huge day for Laverton in state league 4
after it beat rivals Melbourne City 1-0. Marcelo De La Plaza scored a derby goal he will cherish. In the women’s state leagues, Maribyrnong Swifts Silvers are struggling big time in state league 2. The Silvers remain bottom of the ladder after a 5-0 loss to Clifton Hill. Altona Magic had its biggest win of the season in state league 3, thrashing Rowville Eagles 6-2 on the back of doubles to Olivia Nedelkova and Stephanie Pasceri. Top-of-the-ladder Altona City made it six wins in a row to start the season by downing Fitzroy City 3-0.
The Cia Paulista Australia Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu centres celebrated their 10th anniversary last weekend. Cia Paulista Australia has 11 centres across the nation, including seven in Victoria and four more in Adelaide, Darwin, Gympie and the Gold Coast. The special 10-year celebrations took place in their Maribyrnong centre on Saturday. Nearly 300 people converged on the west for a massive seminar, which was led by internationally acclaimed local coach Carlos Vieira. Vieira is also coach of UFC fighter Jake Matthews, who attended on the day. An incredible 15 black belt fighters were under the one roof celebrating a milestone for the club. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a growing sport. In two-and-a-half years, the Maribyrnong arm of Cia Paulista Australia has grown to more than 150 students. The students are men, women, teenagers and kids. As well as the competitive side of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, the coaches also preach the health benefits of the martial art. It is good for general health and fitness, self defence, builds self esteem and strengthens mental health. Lance Jenkinson 37 MARIBYRNONG & HOBSONS BAY STAR WEEKLY \ MAY 29, 2019

Roosters take the long approach to scoreboard results
Challis Collier in action for the Altona Roosters. (Damjan Janevski)
Altona Roosters are taking the lead when it comes to promoting the women’s game in NRL Victoria competitions. The Roosters’ first choice is to promote the game locally, recruit western suburbs talent and develop from within the ranks. They have assembled some exciting junior talent that will either bolster the Roosters senior ranks in the coming years or go on to the elite level. Roosters women’s coach Brandon Taunoa believes too many women’s first grade clubs are too focused on the here and now and not laying a platform for the game to grow. While some clubs have built super teams, it leaves the Roosters top team on the back of some heavy defeats, which can be dispiriting. While the Roosters have the right structures in place to ride out the bumps, some other clubs have fallen by the wayside. “We’re the only club in the comp that has girls teams in 13s, 15s and 17s,” Taunoa said. “We pride ourselves on development. “We’re trying to develop these girls to be
better players and better people and enjoy the game. “We’ve got a good future in our female section. “Other clubs we play against, their teams are made up of players from two clubs or three clubs, but we’re one club. “We don’t need to buy players from other clubs.” There has been no better time for elite young female athletes to consider rugby league as a sporting career. Just like the Women’s AFL, the NRL has finally created a pathway to the NRL for girls. In years past, girls would play with the boys until age 13, then move into non-contact tag. Now there is the option for girls to get into tackle rugby league and a pathway to the top. The NRL Women’s Premiership is in its infancy with only four teams – Brisbane Broncos, New Zealand Warriors, St George Illawarra Dragons and Sydney Roosters – competing in the inaugural season last year. The promising teenagers in the Roosters’
Seagulls claw back win By Lance Jenkinson Even amid the chaos of a 21-point deficit at quarter-time, Williamstown coach Andrew Collins was thinking about a development opportunity for his players. Collins has the ability to not only develop his players better than most coaches in VFL, but does so while also winning games of football. On this occasion against Casey Demons at Downer Oval on Sunday, Collins used his team’s quarter-time plight to offer an education to Seagulls captain Adam Marcon. Collins instructed Marcon to go one-on-one with Jordan Lewis for the rest of the game for two reasons. Firstly, Lewis was carving the Seagulls up and had a 40-possession game in his sights, and, secondly, what better player for Marcon to learn some tricks off in the heat of battle than Lewis, a four-time AFL premiership player. Not only did Marcon get a few lessons from one of the best players in the modern era, but he halved, if not bettered, Lewis’s output for the rest of the day. Marcon would play a significant role in Williamstown’s come-from-behind 16-point win over Casey. “It was a great experience for Adam to be running around next to Jordan,” Collins said. “Jordan was leading the Casey team and I just wanted Adam to experience that and also lead our team. “For him to match Jordan in regards to the output for the next three quarters and for him more so to lead our group, that’s why I put him best on ground.” Collins was fairly measured with his instructions at the quarter-time huddle. He implored his players to chip away at the margin. Cutting the deficit back to 15 points by half-time was a big win as it meant that Casey’s red hot start had been somewhat neutralised and the Williamstown players went to the break feeling much better about themselves. “The message at quarter-time was let’s just even it up, let’s just get into the fight and that’s what we did,” Collins said. Williamstown turned the game on its head with a five-goal-to-nil third quarter. It was the quarter that set up the Seagulls win – their fifth in seven games to have them half a game out of second spot. Collins rated the victory highly because the comeback was measured and deliberate. “To be able to come from four goals down where the opposition are really dominating you and get back into the game and be able to have your own period of playing really well, it was an outstanding victory,” he said. Mitch Hibberd could have argued for his claims for best-afield. Hibberd overcame a slow start to have major impact with 31 38 MARIBYRNONG & HOBSONS BAY STAR WEEKLY \ MAY 29, 2019
ranks can now dream of playing on the big stage, just like Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad, a former Altona Roosters junior boys player who is now in the big league with Canberra Raiders. Taunoa is excited by the potential for female Roosters’ players to make it on to the big stage. “It’s always been a male-dominated sport, but now the females see opportunities with the Women’s NRL comp that started last year, and that’s only going to grow,” he said. “Even the national championships, Victoria has under-16s and under-19s teams, so the growth is definitely there. “The league tag players are transferring over tackle and they’re loving it.” The Roosters claimed their second win of the season on Saturday against Melton Broncos to get back into the top four mix. In men’s first grade, Altona got off the bottom of the ladder with a victory over Melton Broncos. It was the Roosters second win in succession. Lance Jenkinson
Sports shorts Hockey
Altona remains stuck in the middle of the Hockey Victoria women’s premier league ladder because of its inability to win the close games. The Seagulls had a third draw in the first seven rounds after a pulsating game with Doncaster ended 2-2 at Sugar Gum Drive on Saturday. Captain Bronte Kerley and star forward Jessica Brennan scored a goal each for the Seagulls. Altona will have a daunting task on Saturday against undefeated ladder leader Hawthorn.
Cycling
Jared Raynes has taken out the Footscray Cycling Club’s coveted Harry Jones Memorial Handicap. The race is held in honour of a legend of the FFC who epitomised the club’s spirit of humility, determination and camaraderie. Raynes handled the tricky windy conditions the best on the day and took advantage of some misfortune of other competitors, including Shane Ward and Dom Dudkiewicz, who both punctured tyres, and Travis Small, who had a crash. Raynes took the win from Andrew Naughtin and Geoff Robinson.
Soccer
Altona Magic did not let a busy casualty room hamper its efforts on the road at Green Gully in NPL Victoria on Saturday. The undermanned Magic produced a stirring 4-2 win to snap a three-game losing streak. All four Magic goals came in an exciting final 20 minutes with Dusan Bosnjak, new acquisition Hassan Jalloh, captain Troy Ruthven and Robert Stambolziev finding the back of the net. The Magic will host the Melbourne Knights at Paisley Park on Saturday at 6pm.

disposals and nine tackles. The former North Melbourne-listed player demonstrated his toughness inside the contests, his ability to spread and a hard defensive edge. Jaylon Thorpe played his best game for Williamstown, finishing with 3.3 and 11 disposals. Christian Buykx-Smith, who had a serious illness last year and is still getting back to his full capabilities as a footballer, showed encouraging signs with three goals.
Collins also picked out Joel Tippett, Jack Charleston and Nick Ebinger for praise. Williamstown will face a tough trip away to Box Hill Hawks on Saturday. Meanwhile, Footscray has moved up to second on the ladder with a gutsy 19-point win over North Melbourne on Saturday night. Lukas Webb was the leading possession-getter for the Bulldogs with 27. Tory Dickson, (three goals) and Callum Porter, with 19 disposals, nine tackles and two goals, had a big impact.
City West Falcons have opened up a game and a half lead at the top of the Victorian Netball League championship division. The Falcons improved to 9-0 with a resounding 66-40 victory over Ariels at the State Netball and Hockey Centre on Wednesday night. Kristina Brice was the Falcons top attacking option with 42 goals. The Falcons will host Hawks Netball on Wednesday night. FOR MORE SPORT, vISIT Web: starweekly.com.au Maribyrnong & Hobsons Bay Star Weekly @starweeklysport @star_weekly
