PM dream shattered By Benjamin Millar Bill Shorten’s ambition to become Australia’s 31st prime minister has been dashed after Labor’s shock election loss on Saturday. The Maribyrnong MP will step down as Labor leader after six years following the party’s failure to win enough seats to take government. Mr Shorten has promised to stay on as the member for Maribyrnong and indicated a desire to remain on the opposition front bench. An emotional Mr Shorten conceded the election loss on Saturday night. Speaking to a disappointed party faithful, with wife Chloe by his side, he said the election campaign had been tough and “toxic” at times, but he respected the wishes of the Australian people. “I wish we could have won for the true believers, for our brothers and sisters in the mighty trade union movement,” he said. “While I intend to continue to serve as the member for Maribyrnong, I will not be a candidate in the next Labor leadership ballot. “Labor’s next victory will belong to our next leader and I’m confident that victory will come at the next election.” Prime Minister Scott Morrison claimed victory near the stroke of midnight, praising “the quiet Australians” for their support. “I have always believed in miracles,” he said. With counting still taking place in a handful of close contests, Mr Morrison’s Coalition is tracking towards holding a clear majority of at least 76 of the 151 seats. Jockeying for the role of Labor party leader is intensifying, with Anthony Albanese favourite to take the job ahead of other hopefuls, including Chris Bowen and Jim Chalmers. Deputy leader Tanya Plibersek, nominated by Mr Shorten as his preferred leader, has declined to contest the role. Labor made the most of its safety buffer to complete a predicted clean sweep in three inner-west Melbourne seats. With 73 per cent of the vote counted by Tuesday, Mr Shorten had secured 48 per cent of the primary vote in Maribyrnong and 61 per cent of the two candidate preferred vote. Gellibrand MP Tim Watts was returned for a third term, while former Victorian upper house Labor MP Daniel Mulino will become the first member of the newly created seat of Fraser. Former Maribyrnong mayor Janet Rice has been returned to the Senate for The Greens.

Developer bids for extra storeys for tower blocks One of Footscray’s largest-ever developments could become even bigger with the developer pushing to add an extra four levels to its high-rise riverside apartment towers. Joseph Place Pty Ltd, the developer of the former Le Mans Toyota site at 2-6 Hallenstein Street, was given the green light in 2016 by Planning Minister Richard Wynne to build more than 900 apartments across six towers soaring up to 24 storeys high. But a new proposal lodged directly with the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal
(VCAT) is seeking approval for an extra four levels to be built on three of the towers, pushing the height of the tallest from 24 to 28 storeys. The changes would add an extra 115 apartments, up from 937 to 1052, while reducing the proportion of family-friendly three-bedroom apartments from eight down to five per cent of the total. A planning assessment by consultants Urbis on behalf of the developer argues the rise in height is justified by the approval of a number of tall towers on neighbouring blocks.
“Amendments to the permit and endorsed plans are sought to deliver a development which better responds to the approved built form context within the Joseph Road Precinct, improve the amenity of dwellings for future residents, improve the future urban environment for residents within the overall precinct, and improve the overall architectural expression of the development to provide increased distinction between stages,” it stated. “Overall, these changes represent a positive outcome for the site which will improve the
development approved and to be delivered by the permit.” The amendments come despite Maribyrnong council slamming the original development as excessive. A scathing report lashed the project as a “mass over-development” that failed to meet a number of planning objectives. The 1.3-hectare site was sold in 2014 by government agency Places Victoria for a reported $18.7 million. Benjamin Millar
Ferry loses vital berth (Supplied)
By Goya Dmytryshchak A pioneering Williamstown ferry operator says his business is in dire straits after losing a Southgate berth it has had for 13 years. Williamstown Bay and River Cruises, which started tourist ferry services to Williamstown in 1984, is pleading for Parks Victoria to review its decision not to allow its ferries to use their former permanent berth at Southgate. Hobsons Bay council last week voted to support the call for a review, noting that it was the only operator with a wheelchair-accessible boat on the Yarra River and that the council “supports fair competition between ferry services to Hobsons Bay”.
I’ve been doing what we can to salvage what we can - Mark Davy

Williamstown Bay and River Cruises owner Mark Davy said losing the berth at Southgate was “diabolical” for his business. “When Southgate opened up, we created the Williamstown Seeker to get under the low bridges, which it does in all tidal conditions,” he said. “Following that, we built the Yarra shuttle. “Those two boats run every day, up and down, regardless of the weather.” The ferry has lost its ticket box at Southgate’s Berth 1 and now has to use a shared berth about 100 metres downstream. “We’ve sent out more than 250,000 brochures plus [advertised on] the internet labelling Berth 1 as our site,” Mr Davy said. “I’ve been doing what we can to salvage what we can as a business and I’ve got these placards that you hold to say that we have moved, so that when our intended customers arrive they will know where we are. “Southgate promenade is the main tourism precinct, we’re not there. We have been there since 1996. “We’re in diabolical trouble.” Parks Victoria’s Michael Treanor said strict

Police on Monday said forensic testing confirmed remains found at Altona North this month belonged to 31-year-old Ballarat woman Tamara Farrell. It is alleged Ms Farrell was killed by a family friend. Forensic tests confirm her remains were dumped at two separate sites across Victoria, hundreds of kilometres apart. Ms Farrell’s badly burnt remains were first found by a country road near Sale, some 300 kilometres from her home in the Ballarat suburb of Canadian where she was allegedly killed days earlier, the Melbourne Magistrates Court heard in February. On May 6, railway workers found remains near a creek in Altona North. Police on Monday said forensic testing confirmed those remains also belonged to Ms Farrell. Ms Farrell’s family friend Shaye Kotiau, 22, from Altona, is charged with murder and his sister Kieahn Kotiau, 19, is accused of being an accessory to murder. Ms Farrell, who grew up in Melbourne’s western suburbs, had not long been living in Ballarat when she was killed on February 17. She was an airport shuttle driver for Ballarat Coachlines. Ms Farrell and Mr Kotiau had been family friends since childhood. Their mothers were close friends.

People enjoying a cuppa at the pop-up cafe. (Joe Mastroianni)
Welcome to cafe society A pop-up cafe to bring people together over free coffee and snacks will open in Hobsons Bay. Gateway Community Services, based at South Kingsville, has created a ‘Social Cafe’ in the form of a purpose-built Spitfire caravan that will be moved to different locations. The organisation will use a $5000 community grant from Hobsons Bay council to recruit and train volunteers to run the cafe. Gateway’s general manager William Kelly said the cafe was aimed at connecting people in the community. “The concept is that we bring the cafe experience to people that are socially isolated or have limited social engagement,” he said. “We all enjoy a cuppa and a chat but for some people that’s either a bit difficult for them,
whether it be financially or they just may not have a companion, or they’ve lost the interest to engage.” Two days a week, the cafe will work with the council to be based at areas identified as having high rates of isolated community members. The cafe will advertise its future locations via social media and other outlets. Applications for the next round of Hobsons Bay council community grants open on June 3. Locals driven to action
Stony Creek defence call
By Goya Dmytryshchak Altona Meadows residents are angry that a private nursing home has been allowed to build 17 parking bays on public land. Concerns have also been raised that there is not enough parking to cater for the home’s expansion from 34 to 105 beds with 11 on-site car spaces. Allanvale Private Nursing Home was granted permission to expand in 2007 but work didn’t start until last year. Last week’s Hobsons Bay council meeting heard that the home had been granted seven extensions of time to its original permit. More than a dozen questions from the public related to the home and associated parking. Philip Frisina, who has lived in the area for 42 years, asked: “Where is the justice that private enterprise can get a permit to extend the nursing home from 34 beds to 105 with the same amount of parking spaces on-site (11)?” Several residents asked why the council had given public space for the home’s car parking instead of requiring it to accommodate the car spaces it required within its footprint. Hobsons Bay mayor Jonathon Marsden said the land for the parking was within the road reserve and would remain in the council’s ownership. “The parking outside of the site is located within the Ascot Street road reserve,” he said. “Only a very small section extends into the adjoining park. “The provision of car parking on this public land also allows other members of the public to utilise this parking, which would not be available if provided on private land.” Aun Lim asked the council what the minimum parking requirements were for the redevelopment of the home.
Resident Philip Frisina is upset about parking bays being built on public land. (Damjan Janevski)
Cr Marsden replied that at the time the permit was considered, there was no parking rate specified in the planning scheme, but since then the state government had legislated a parking rate for a nursing home of 0.3 spaces per lodging room. Carewest Group chief executive Leonie
NEWS
Merange, which manages Allanvale, said the street parking would benefit the community. “The additional street parking may be used by friends and families of residents but most importantly is providing car parking spaces available to the local community,” she said.
Community groups fighting for the protection of heavily contaminated Stony Creek are calling for the state government to take a greater role in its recovery. Friends of Stony Creek and Friends of Cruickshank Park last week jointly wrote to Water Minister Lisa Neville to highlight chemical pollution running into Stony Creek and the need for greater environmental protection. The groups asked Ms Neville to meet them to discuss their concerns about “the catastrophic pollution of Stony Creek”. They highlighted the death of wildlife and aquatic life following the August 2018 Tottenham fire, as well as the impact on communities along the creek, including strong chemical smells following rainfall. “Such a pollution event in an Australian urban waterway is unprecedented in at least the last 30 years, making Stony Creek the most polluted urban waterway in Australia,” the groups’ letter states. “Melbourne Water, EPA and Maribyrnong council have been undertaking remediation within the creek for the past eight months, however our groups are concerned that these efforts will be futile unless significant investment and concurrent effort is also made to protect Stony Creek from further pollution.” Maribyrnong council has argued that the state government needs to fund work that goes beyond the council’s already stretched budget. ‘Brutal’ race looms By Benjamin Millar A race is underway to protect one of Footscray’s most iconic post-war buildings from the wrecking ball. National Trust of Australia has nominated The Footscray Psychiatric Centre, a Brutalist monolith built on the Footscray Hospital site in the 1970s, for listing on the Victorian Heritage Register. The request comes as the state government turns its mind to the future of the hospital site after announcing a $1.5 billion rebuild of the hospital opposite Victoria University’s Footscray Park campus. Simon Ambrose, National Trust of Australia Victorian chief executive, said the building has architectural significance as a Brutalist landmark, and the capacity to assist in telling the story of psychiatric care in Victoria. Mr Ambrose said the building was recently selected for inclusion in the Phaidon Atlas of Brutalist Architecture and serves as one of the most striking examples of Brutalism in Australia today. “By nominating the Footscray Psychiatric Centre to the Victorian Heritage Register, the National Trust believe the site deserves protection and should be retained in any future redevelopment plans,” he said. “The National Trust supports the sensitive adaptive re-use of heritage buildings that no longer retain their former use, and looks forward to reviewing future proposals to reactivate and reuse this highly significant place.” The Victorian Heritage Register provides legal protection for heritage places and objects that are significant to the history and development of Victoria. Footscray Historical Society secretary Carmel Taig said while she is no expert on

Brutalist architecture, she appreciates its “boldness and honesty”. “Remember how Footscray fell out of love with Victorian lacework, tessellated tiled verandahs and turned posts and went ‘modern’? “Remember when chimney stacks and saw-tooth factories fell out of favour? A few decades later, they’re back in vogue.” John Jovic, a Brutalist enthusiast who has

long pushed for the building to be protected, said he considered it to be a work of art in itself. “It is fantastic the National Trust did this, it needs to be protected.” Footscray MP Katie Hall said the suburb’s diversity is represented in its mix of architectural styles as much as its people. “The Victorian Heritage Register will make its final decision independent of government.”

Newport track name rejected A plan to rename the Newport athletics track after Peter Norman has been abandoned by Hobsons Bay council. The council mooted in December renaming the track in honour of the late Williamstown sprinter, widely remembered for standing in solidarity with athletes giving the black power salute. Mr Norman claimed silver at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics by running 200 metres in 20.06 seconds – still an Australian record. But he is widely remembered for wearing an Olympic Project for Human Rights badge in support of African American runners Tommie Smith and John Carlos, who raised their fists in silent protest on the medal dais – a moment captured in what Time magazine called the most iconic photograph of all time. But Williamstown Athletic Club members opposed renaming the track after Norman, saying they put up a proposal years ago to rename the track in honour of the late Graeme Morrish, who was instrumental in establishing the track. The club was also opposed because Norman was not a Williamstown athlete, instead running with East Melbourne Harriers. The council received 63 submissions in response to the proposed renaming of the track after Norman, 47 of which were objections. It will seek an alternative name. Goya Dmytryshchak

Labor funds a no show By Goya Dmytryshchak and Benjamin Millar Millions of dollars of pre-election promises that were contingent on Labor winning federal government have been scuttled in Gellibrand, including $2 million for Stony Creek. Gellibrand Labor MP Tim Watts was returned with 65.3 per cent (52,647) of the two-candidate preferred vote, but his party remains in opposition after pre-poll predictions of a Shorten government fell short. Stony Creek, running through Cruickshank Park at Yarraville, was devastated by chemical run-off from a Tottenham warehouse fire last year. Other Labor pledges that have been torpedoed include a $4.8 million bike path on Buckley and Napier streets connecting Footscray to the CBD, $500,000 for a music hub at Footscray Community Arts Centre and $50,000 for a boat washdown station at Altona boat ramp. The Liberals’ Anthony Mitchell received 27,934 votes after preferences with 75.25 per cent of votes counted. Of 111,217 eligible voters, 75.25 per cent turned out to vote and 3.72 per cent voted informally. On primary votes, Mr Watts polled 49.51 per cent (39,892), representing a 3.28 per cent swing to Labor. Mr Mitchell received 28.99 per cent (23,358) of primary votes, followed by The Greens’ Bernadette Thomas on 16.09 per cent (12,962) and United Australia Party’s Lisa Bentley on 5.42 per cent (4369). Gellibrand covers Hobsons Bay, Footscray, Seddon, Kingsville, Yarraville, Williams Landing and part of Point Cook. Mr Watts was contacted for comment.
Mixed feelings for new MP Labor’s Daniel Mulino describes Saturday’s federal election as bittersweet. Mr Mulino made history, becoming the first member for the newly established seat of Fraser, but his party won’t form government after the Coalition claimed an unlikely victory. “It’s very exciting – I’m honoured to be the first member to represent Fraser, but it was certainly bittersweet given the national result,” he said. Mr Mulino and the Labor Party had made a number of election commitments contingent on forming government, including $5 million towards the St Albans Leisure Centre. The project is now left without federal or state government support, but Mr Mulino vowed to advocate for support in his new role. “I’ll continue to advocate for a lot of the issues we put forward … under a Labor government local schools would have received $28 million in funding over three years.” Mr Mulino also intends to make his voice heard as the Airport Rail Link and Sunshine Super Hub move towards a reality. The seat of Fraser, which covers mainly Brimbank, takes in Braybrook and Tottenham. Mr Mulino had 64 per cent of first preferences votes with 75 per cent of votes counted. Tate Papworth

However, Hobsons Bay mayor Jonathon Marsden said the introduction of the electric vehicle would not alter collection times. “While the vehicle itself will be quieter than a traditional waste truck, the collection of recyclables and garbage can still be a noisy task due to the type of materials collected,” he said. “EPA noise guidelines currently restrict domestic waste collections to daytime hours up to 6pm. Industrial waste collections are restricted up until 8pm.” Cleanaway plans to introduce more electric and combination fuel vehicles to its fleet.
Hobsons Bay’s garbage is about to be collected more quietly. The municipality is among the first in Australia to test an electric garbage truck. The council’s contractor, Cleanaway, has introduced the first fully-electric garbage trucks to its fleet and chosen Hobsons Bay to try one out. With zero emissions, the trucks run for 180-200 kilometres before needing to be recharged. They generate electricity when braking, topping up the batteries and reducing repair and maintenance costs such as the wearing-out of brake pads. By Benjamin Millar Footscray’s characters, streetscapes and nightlife have been captured in all their glory as part of the west’s biggest photographic competition. Established in 2016, Picturing Footscray invites photographers to explore and capture a slice of the lively streets and unique characters of the bustling suburb. This year’s theme was West Envy, asking entrants to capture what Footscray has that other places don’t.

Judges Jody Haines and Adam Harding announced the winners at the opening of the exhibition last Thursday night. First prize winner Matto Lucas said his winning image Test Shot At Westgay showed Footscray can be wild, surreal, diverse, romantic, energetic and crazy. “I am an event and nightlife photographer, this image was a test shot which captured a very Rennie Ellis-ey composition,” he said. “This image is quintessential Footscray sub-culture.” Second prize was awarded to Oli Sansom for Heart of the Matter, a portrait of Footscray’s own cultural hero, Franco Cozzo, shortly after selling his iconic store.

Former Star Weekly reporter Xavier Smerdon took third prize with Footscray Drag Race, capturing locals watching on as local drag legend Abril La Trene makes her way down the home stretch of the first Footscray Drag Race. “This image sums up so much that is amazing about Footscray,” he said. “People from all over the world have moved here to start new lives.” Mishka Winters was awarded the student prize for her photo Crossroads, taken from the top level of Footscray Market. “I used to think that crossing the intersection roads straight, sides and diagonally were only in America,” she said. “This spot in Footscray was the first time I realised we could do it too.” Picturing Footscray will be on exhibition at VU at MetroWest until June 13. The People’s Choice award will be awarded at the end of the exhibition.

The not-for-profit movement aims to create affordable solutions to the daily challenges of living with disabilities. Teams in this week’s makeathon will be given a brief and then have the weekend to find a solution. Eight “need knowers” will be matched with teams of “makers” consisting of engineers, designers, software developers and health professionals to come up with devices that help people with disabilities live more independently. Challenges will include devices for exercise, independent eating, teeth brushing and picking items up.
Creative problem-solving teams will join forces this week in a brainstorming blitz to tackle challenges faced by people living with disabilities. The third annual TOM: Melbourne Makeathon for assistive technology will take place from May 24 to 26 at FAB9, the maker space set up at the Dream Factory in Footscray. TOM stands for Tikkun Olam Makers, a Hebrew phrase defined as acts of kindness to improve the world and the community in which people live.
Since TOM: Melbourne’s launch in 2016, 28 prototypes have been developed. TOM: Melbourne founding director Debbie Dadon said previous makeathons had helped deliver solutions for people living with disabilities. “We aim to help the lives of our need knowers like John, who is a quadruple amputee, and little Austin, who lives with congenital muscular dystrophy,” she said. All plans and prototypes created via the challenges will become freely available in the public domain for anyone to access and download.

Students on the verge of starting their careers are gaining a helping hand from Victoria University’s latest workplace initiative. VU Innovations at Victoria University has recently launched Verge, a campus-based student recruitment agency connecting businesses and students. VU Verge director Martin Astbury said the service has been able to link students with valuable workplace experience, while also helping local businesses to find skilled and enthusiastic workers. Verge is also looking to make connections with more businesses in the west that believe they could benefit from extra support from VU students. Details: vuverge.com Benjamin Millar

An Altona mother who was diagnosed with breast cancer five months ago is sharing her story to help others in their battle. Stacey Crozier, whose son Harrison is 18 months old, will next month host a Biggest Morning Tea for the Cancer Council at the childcare centre Harrison attends to raise funds and awareness. It was only by accident while playing with Harrison that she discovered a lump. “I wasn’t going to get tests or checks or anything like that; it was just very random that I found it,” the 39-year-old said. “My son and I were playing around and he kicked me as I was tickling him and he got me in the left breast. “Then as I was nursing I felt the lump.

MY PLACE She can’t leave the house without bumping into someone she knows, but Climate for Change founder Katerina Gaita wouldn’t have it any other way. She speaks with Benjamin Millar. I started volunteering with the local Sudanese community in 2002. It was the first time I’d really been to this part of town and I instantly felt like I’d found my home. My husband and I bought a house here in Seddon in 2004. What do you like most about the area? I first fell in love with how multicultural the west is. Then when we started living here, I found a really connected and supportive community. I love that I can never walk outside my door or go to the local shops without running into someone. I have to allow extra time to chat. What are your favourite local places? Fig and Walnut – Vera is always so supportive of Climate for Change and a heap of other local initiatives. Littlefoot – Stu and Liana are also really passionate about the area and the community and do so much to support and cultivate it. My backyard with my family and friends – we’ve always had a very open house, so people are always coming and going. I also just love walking around Footscray. What led you to start Climate for Change? When I first realised how serious and urgent climate change was … I started doing all I could, but soon realised it would never be enough because there weren’t enough people active on the issue. When I looked into what
creates individual and social change, time and time again I found that conversations between everyday people were key. I looked around for an organisation that could help me have those conversations and found there wasn’t one – so I started it. What has been the most rewarding aspect? Working with people who are so passionate and committed. We have hundreds of volunteers every year who give so much to make a difference. They energise and inspire me whenever I’m around them. What are you ultimately hoping to achieve? Our goal is to have enough people committed to the action we need to keep global warming below 1.5 degrees that we could have those policies put forward and delivered by government without backlash and with active support from people, communities, business and industry. What is something people may be surprised to learn about you? Haha – I don’t know that there are any surprises about me. I think I wear everything on my sleeve. I get violently sick from quinoa!

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir finds satisfaction in the Pantry
AmmAs PAntry Address: 33 Parker Street, Footscray Phone: 0439 902 384 bowl of brown rice, pickled ginger, carrot, cucumber, radish, avocado, wasabi, mayo and smoked salmon. At first glance, this appears to be considerably more strident in terms of earnest brown rice-iness. But there is just the right amount of seasoning and lubrication to make the whole thing sing. Deanne and Beth tell me the line-up will be tweaked as we move into winter. Meals such as the two above will remain, but will be joined by some things of the “comfort food” variety.

Meet Deanne Thiedeman, on the left, and Beth Lavelle. Ammas Pantry is their first foray into the hospitality industry, having taken over the premises on the corner of Parker and Hyde following the closing of a relatively short-lived predecessor. They met when their two Sri Lankan-background sons attended, and became pals, at the kinder opposite their new cafe. As you’d expect, that kinder and the next-door school play a fairly big part in the life, and prospective prosperity, of Ammas Pantry – but there’s lots here for a broader audience, too. So while there’s the muffins and sandwiches and coffee you’d expect of an establishment right opposite two education institutions, Ammas is also delivering fine lunchtime meals that are delicious, affordable and of just the right heft for a daytime feed. As I find out to my pleasure and satisfaction during two lunch visits. Both my meals are built around brown rice, something that would cause Bennie to get a tad sniffy – but which I enjoy, especially when two differing sets of Asian flavours are so adeptly harnessed. The fine, mild chicken curry, for instance, at $15.50. It’s handily accompanied by that brown rice, a veg-studded dal, chutney, raita, a Sri-Lankan-style dry coconut jumble and a papadum. It’s excellent. It makes me happy. Same deal with this identically priced lunch

Altona Sports Club basks in glory More room has to be found on the trophy shelf at Altona Sports Club. The reason? Club general manager Gavin Comport was named Club Manager of the Year at the annual Community Clubs Victoria gala awards celebration early this month. And another club winner was Joseph MacFadyen, who was named Club Official of the Year. Last year, the club’s president David Smith took out the President of the Year award, while the club was also named as winner of the Best Entertainment Program award. These latest wins confirm Altona Sports Club’s reputation for staying ahead of the pack, constantly introducing new ideas and ways to entertain guests and to make every visit a chance to tap into diverse activities and experiences. David says Gavin and Joe thoroughly deserve their wins. “Gavin – who’s known as a ‘Clubbie’ with the industry in his DNA - is a popular manager who galvanised the club on his arrival in 2017. His management has been integral to our club’s evolution and his achievements are many.” Gavin, who is chuffed with the win, says his vision for the club is all about keeping it growing. “We are heading in the right direction,” he says. “When the board first employed me two years ago, they asked of me one thing: to bring the club into the 21st century. It’s all about
changing the culture of the club. “I would like to acknowledge the role the staff played in helping me win the award. Their support and assistance is integral to not only my success but the success of Altona Sports Club overall.” David says Joseph MacFadyen has played a huge role in making the club what it is today. “Joe was president in 1980, a committee member since the ‘70s, a former board chairman, and current director. “He has witnessed all the club’s significant events, from the beginning in the 1950s right up to today. He’s overseen construction and all upgrades at the club, has always been a staunch volunteer and ideas man, and has steered successful fundraising. “To establish a new club took a lot of hard work and volunteering and Joseph not only was witness to this, he lived it. It is this history that continues on, through Joe, today.” Joe, who knows his family would be proud of his award, says the club is his second home. “I grew up in the club, watching it grow from swamp to what it’s become and is going to be in the future. There a sense of pride and passion there,” Joe states. Altona Sports Club, 11 Altona Road, Altona. Inquiries: 9398 2283 or visit altonasportsclub.com.au

All cute Victorian facade-wise, with cheeky yellow door to the street, this one has been treated to a stunning makeover by award-winning DX Architects. The house is now an exceptional example of respecting the heritage while waving the wand of contemporary-chic pizzazz. Step through that yellow door and the tall ceiling, corbelled arch and deep skirting boards do their romantic period thing. But look up to see ebony designer pendants; look along and barn-style bedroom doors emerge; and look down to rich new

Victorian ash floorboards: a juxtaposition masterclass. The three grey-carpeted bedrooms are along the entry hall, as is the main bathroom. Two of the bedrooms have bespoke robes, one has a door to a small courtyard, and all have plantation shutters and much charm. Both the en suite and larger bathroom ooze glamour, with a mix of sumptuous textures and palettes. Dual basins are in the en suite, and a totally discreet European laundry is in the other.
The large living hub can be summed up in that eloquent word: wow. The black and white palette (as all through) and polished concrete floors bounce around light, as do the clerestory windows under a soaring ceiling that shows off eye-catching dips and angles. The shmick kitchen, with a wall of glossy black cabinetry and an opposite wall of white, has a waterfall stone island bench, a window splashback in a another wall of white cabinetry, and a host of European mod-cons.

Ducted heating, refrigerated cooling and a Bose surround-sound system are included. Bifolds open right up to a covered alfresco area which links with a deck where a fireplace with a hearth on which to perch provides a riveting focus. A small wedge of lawn, dense greenery and extensive soft-grey paving are also in the backyard, as are a shed and a rear-access parking area behind a roller door. This circa 1950s weatherboard, within a hop, step and jump of fab Cruikshank Park – off-leash dog park, Stony Creek reserve and sports facilities – has a comfortable, homey feel. It has a lounge room (decorative cornices) with polished original floorboards and a brick open fireplace. The kitchen, towards the back, is charmingly old-school and is of the type that includes space for table and chairs, creating a natural human magnet. The three bedrooms are across the way from the bathroom and there’s a second toilet off a rear sunroom. The backyard has a good wedge of lawn and well-established gardens. A concrete driveway leads to a garage. The block is about 450 square metres – perhaps with space for a rear extension, STCA.
Built about five years ago, this light-filled unit is sure to entice first-home buyers, downsizers, and investors who can expect a rental yield of about $550 a week. Entry is directly into a spacious living room with polished floorboards and large windows. The kitchen, tucked to the side, has plenty of white cupboards, a brekkie bench, glass splashback and a 900mm cooker. The two grey-carpeted bedrooms are a good size and have built-in robes. They share a bright bathroom with separate tub and a raised basin atop a stone vanity. Ducted heating and cooling and a remote-controlled garage are included. A concrete patio out back is rimmed with greenery. The property is within walking distance of the waterfront, schools, shops and eateries.

SPORT Speedster on track for glory Matthew Payne is scorching athletics tracks across Australia with his speed. The 15-year-old from Newport is one of the standout sprinters in his age group in the nation. He was a force at the state championships and showed his potential at the nationals to complete a sensational summer in athletics. Payne puts his success down to his commitment to improve. “When I want something, I go very hard for it,” he said. Payne ran to glory in the 100 metres and 200 metres at the Athletics Victoria State Track and Field Championships. The Williamstown Athletic Club member used the wins as a springboard for his season. “Knowing I could win the 100 metres and 200 metres at state level against the previous national champion … gave me a lot of confidence,” Payne said. “That was probably where my best form was in regards to personal bests and times. I just went out there and ran
my absolute best in good conditions against really good athletes.” Payne went on to represent Victoria at the Australian Athletics Championships. The Maribyrnong College student was due to compete in two events – the 100 metres and 200 metres – but a hamstring strain cost him the chance to compete in the 200. While that was a setback, Payne was able to show off his talents in the 100 metres, returning with a cherished silver medal. “That would be my main highlight so far,” Payne said. “I went up with somewhat of an expectation of myself to win a medal – whether it was necessarily gold, silver or bronze, I didn’t really mind. I was just over the moon when I … found out that I came second.” Payne has tremendous support from coaches Robert Spencer (Williamstown Athletics) and David Battistella (Maribyrnong College). Spencer praised Payne’s desire to improve and his ruthless mentality on the starting blocks.
Payne got his start in athletics in 2012 as a member of the Williamstown Little Athletics Centre. It was not until 2016 that he began to take the sport seriously after winning a medal at the state championships. His first love is Australian rules and his dream is to play in the AFL. The Western Bulldogs supporter intends to take the elite pathways in both footy and athletics for the time being. Payne is the May nominee for the Don Deeble Rising Star award. The award, hosted by the Sunshine Western Region Sports Club and Star Weekly Weekly, recognises young athletes from the western suburbs who have achieved outstanding results at state and or national levels. Payne will receive $1000 and other prizes, donated by the Yarraville Club Cricket Club to assist him in achieving his sports goals. Lance Jenkinson

Bulldogs miss their bite By Lance Jenkinson Footscray has endured a harrowing opening month in the Rugby Victoria Dewar Shield. The rebuilding Bulldogs were dealt a harsh hand by the fixture makers, facing the current top four clubs one after another. The losses have piled up as a consequence. The Bulldogs are licking their wounds after a 59-0 mauling at the hands of Harlequins at Henry Turner Reserve on Saturday – a loss that leaves them with 0-4 record. Bulldogs coach Leni Tui is not dwelling on the first month. He is optimistic his young team can begin its upswing now it has its toughest part of the schedule out of the way. “Our next three games are against sides in the bottom four,” Tui said. “We’re looking to get a few wins.” Footscray is a victim of its own development success. The Bulldogs have produced a number of players who have gone on to feature in the 34 MARIBYRNONG & HOBSONS BAY STAR WEEKLY \ MAY 22, 2019
top four clubs that have given them headaches in the opening month. “Those four teams are fairly strong and their recruitment has been pretty good because they recruit from us,” Tui said. “We lost over a dozen quality players going to other teams because we couldn’t afford it financially. “There’s no point in complaining about it – we’ve just got to move forward and rebuild the future of our club for next year and the following year. For me and my coaches, we’ll build from what we have.” While inexperience is a worthwhile excuse, Tui could not defend his players after their unacceptable performance against Harlequins. Harlequins might be further advanced in their development, but what the Bulldogs served up was not true to themselves. “It’s important that you turn up with the right attitude and the right energy and I thought we were a bit flat in the warm-up,” Tui said. “We like to play a physical game … Harlequins is one of the best teams in the
competition and they had a very high tempo and we didn’t switch on at the start.” The writing was on the wall early for Footscray. The Bulldogs broke down defensively and were made to pay. “They found a lot of holes in our defence,” Tui said. “We work on our line speed, making one-on-one tackles and not over-committing to the breakdown. “We failed to do that, especially out wide in the first 15 minutes when Harlequins scored three, maybe four quick tries by getting the ball away from the ruck so quickly and our boys were too slow to react.” How quickly Footscray can turn around its form is dependent on whether it can get physicality back into its game. The trademark Bulldog bite needs to return for Saturday’s trip to Power House. “Footscray is known for its physicality,” Tui said. “That’s something we want to maintain for the whole 80 minutes.”
Newport Rams have unveiled their new coach with Justin Charles stepping into the role for the 2019-20 Baseball Victoria summer league season. Charles, 48, will bring a wealth of sporting experience to the role, having been a former minor league baseballer in the US, a national leaguer with the Melbourne Monarchs and an AFL footballer with Footscray and Richmond in a career spanning 90 games. The former Werribee Giants coach has been involved with Newport as a player for the past two seasons. Charles will move into the role vacated by David Asp. Rams president Ben Portelli is delighted to have Charles on board in a bigger capacity. “I’m extremely excited that someone of Justin’s pedigree and sheer enthusiasm will lead our playing group into the next phase of their careers,” Portelli said. Charles is ecstatic to be handed the opportunity to steer Newport. “It is a deep honour and privilege to be handed the responsibility of taking the reins at Newport Baseball Club,” Charles said. “An absolute dream come true. “I cannot wait to get started.” Charles expects to have a smooth transition into the coaching role. There have been rock solid foundations left by outgoing coach Asp. “I look forward to continuing on the superb work of David Asp,” Charles said. “With the incredible depth of talent from top to bottom and the physical resources we are blessed with, we’ll be looking to consolidate our position in division 1 and build from there. “Don’t expect massive changes as I feel David has presided over a fantastic base.” Lance Jenkinson

Western hopes crushed By Lance Jenkinson The Western Region Football League never had a semblance of control over the scoreboard during its 42-point loss to Goulburn Valley Football League in the AFL Victoria Community Championship interleague clash on home soil at Avalon Airport Oval on Saturday. The WRFL’s best took on the Goulburn Valley region in a mouth-watering encounter, but the hosts were made to rue both their inaccuracy in front of goal and inability to hit targets inside 50 under pressure. A lot of the WRFL’s shots were from long distances, which was reflected in the team’s poor conversion of four goals from 18 shots. “They had a spare behind the footy during play and we just didn’t do a good enough job of rounding him,” WRFL coach Brad Julier said. “A lot of our shots were from 40 to 50 metres out instead of 20 to 30 metres, which we would’ve liked.
“We just couldn’t get it deep enough inside 50 to get a good shot on goal. “A lot of it was rushed, their pressure was pretty good.” Julier was pleased with the fight shown by the WRFL players, who played catch up as they trailed at every change. Had it not been for their inaccuracy in the final quarter, the WRFL might have had an unlikely comeback. “We were sort of hanging around all day,” he said. “The last quarter we challenged, but kicking seven behinds in that quarter didn’t help us.” Josh Macdonald was named the WRFL’s best for his impact on the wing. Macdonald was praised for his willingness to work both ways. “He used the footy well and his work rate was sensational,” Julier said. Daniel Nielson was the pick of the WRFL defenders for his work across half-back. His reading of the play stood out.
“The ball came in quite a bit, but he was rock solid in the defence,” Julier said. Brydon Hodgson put his body on the line for the cause in the midfield. “He crashed and bashed for us,” Julier said. “They were a pretty solid side size-wise but he used his body well and worked really hard in there for us.” While the result was not what the WRFL desired, the success of the occasion strengthened the league’s appetite for interleague football. Julier was impressed by the support of the top club, the players and the league officials. “There was great buy-in from a lot of the competition’s best players,” he said. “I think we had 17 WRFL juniors in the side – guys that have played all their junior footy with the WRFL – so there’s definitely a lot of talent there and we’re keen to keep pushing that. “It’s a big step forward for representative football in the WRFL.”
Altona City rebounds after painful lesson Altona City embarked on a week of soul searching after reaching its lowest ebb of the Football Victoria men’s state league 1 soccer season. In the aftermath of a 3-0 loss to Keilor Park that bared no hallmarks of the team’s quality performances so far this season, City coach Andy O’Dell and football director Sam Borg engaged with players as a group and individually to find answers to their rare down week. The effort had the desired effect for City, which looked more like its usual self in a 4-0 win over Banyule City at Kim Reserve on Saturday night. “We had a bad week the week before, but the boys put that right this week,” Borg said. “It was a wake up call. We had to get a few things sorted.” Altona City was so far away from its usual output seven days earlier that it was fairly easy to pinpoint the issues. City’s players needed to re-focus on what had got them to an eye-catching five wins in their first six starts. “The message to the players was not throw the baby out with the bath water – it was more constructive and getting players focused on what their jobs are,” Borg said. “The issues last week were playing balls in silly areas, our defensive approach and our preparation before the game. “To their credit, the players turned that around … it was a totally different performance.” Altona City was in command from the outset against Banyule. City scored two goals in each half for a comfortable victory that keeps it second on the ladder, two points behind leaders Preston Lions. Conor Rafferty is the talk of Altona City. The young striker scored a double against Banyule to make it five goals in his past three games. Club members are taking delight in seeing a homegrown talent thrive in senior ranks. “You give him half a chance and he puts it into the back of the net,” Borg said. Evan Christodoulou, Callum Byrne and David Mwarabu were outstanding in the midfield for Altona City. Christodoulou capped a superb game with a goal, while Domenico Marafioti also found the back of the net. Altona City will feature in a second-versus-third blockbuster with Sydenham Park at Keilor Lodge Reserve on Saturday. Yarraville is on a three-game unbeaten run in state league 1. The Glory moved off the bottom of the ladder after a 1-0 win over FC Clifton Hill at McIvor Reserve on Saturday. Lance Jenkinson
SPORT
Magic under a dark spell May has been mayhem for Altona Magic who have lost all three of their games this month to fall out of the top six. Of most concern for the Magic is their terrible defensive record across those three games. They have conceded 10 goals in their past three outings, including four in a half to Pascoe Vale in Friday night’s 5-2 loss at CB Smith Reserve. Goals from Lirim Elmazi and David Trajanoski were not enough. In the state leagues, Altona East Phoenix had a 1-1 draw with Hume United in state league 2. Williamstown drew 2-2 with Western Eagles in state league 3. Altona North is three points clear on top of state league 4 after a 3-1 victory over Spring Hills. Barnstoneworth United is in the state league 5 title hunt, but its progress was halted by a 1-0 loss to Maidstone United. In women’s league action, Maribyrnong Swifts Silvers were on the wrong end of a 5-0 shellacking in state league 2. Altona City flexed its muscle in state league 3 with a 9-2 trouncing of Rowville Eagles. In the same league, Altona Magic toppled Maidstone United 2-1. Barnstoneworth United cruised to a 7-0 win over Maribyrnong Swifts Lightning in state league 4. Lance Jenkinson
Footscray’s Josh Wallis gets some good hang time in his mark over Werribee’s Jack Henderson. (Luke Hemer)
Doggies hold on for a win Footscray is up to fourth on the VFL ladder after keeping Werribee at bay in a thrilling 11-point western derby win at the Whitten Oval on Saturday. The Bulldogs kept Werribee at an arm’s length all game, leading a tight contest narrowly at every change. Exciting half-forward Bailey Dale put his hand up for an AFL recall with 21 disposals, six marks and three goals. Patrick Lipinski, the Dogs’ leading possession winner with 32, Bailey Williams and Lewis Young continue to knock on the door of senior selection. Footscray host North on Saturday at the Whitten Oval, starting at 7pm. Meanwhile, Williamstown’s early goal blitz was the key to its sizable 32-point win over Coburg at Piranha Park. The Seagulls opened up with a six-goal-to-nil first term and were never headed. Williamstown have the bye this week. Young gun Conor Rafferty has been lethal in front of goal for Altona City.
