Social sips at Seaview The Gulls Coterie Group will this month hold its annual wine, beer and cheese fundraising event for the Williamstown Football Club. Coterie president Mandy Drew said last year’s event had been so successful, it was now a permanent fixture. The social and fundraising group has about 120 members and has been raising money for the club for many years. This year’s event will raise money for rehabilitation equipment for the players. People attending will be able to enjoy wines from the Mornington Peninsula, Pyrenees, McLaren Vale, Heathcote, Barossa and Clare Valley regions, craft beers from Two Birds, Moon Dog and Young Henrys, and a variety of cheeses for tasting. Ms Drew said it was a very enjoyable way for people to support the club. “This year, the women have got their first night game on May 18 so hopefully people can stay and watch the women play,” she said. The event is at the club’s Seaview events centre on Saturday, May 18 from 3-6pm. The cost is $45. The report says the proposed new road, connecting to Gordon Street via left-in and left-out access, is the only viable option given the site is bordered by Pipemakers Park to the north, Frogs Hollow to the east and the La Scala development to the south. Star Weekly understands the site was long used as a dumping ground and contains about 200,000 cubic metres of contaminated waste, including demolition waste and soil dumped from other contaminated sites. A 1997 assessment report noted the site was intended to become an open space. Orion International did not respond by time of publication.

Park plans spark anger By Benjamin Millar Maribyrnong council has moved to quell a growing backlash to proposed plans for redeveloping public open space with improved sports grounds. The council adopted a new master plan for Footscray Park in February that paves the way for Melbourne Victory to create three new soccer pitches in Footscray Park. Last month it began community consultation on the West Footscray Sports Facility Plan, which proposes to upgrade sporting facilities in Shorten Reserve, Barrett Reserve and Johnson Reserve. Concept designs triggered an outpouring of concern from residents worried about the potential loss of open space, playgrounds and a scout hall. Maribyrnong mayor Martin Zakharov said the council acknowledges “there has been a lot of concern” about the possible changes. “Our community is growing, and we need to make sure that what we do will cater for our current users, as well as lasting well into the future,” he said. “To date, we have consulted with over 20 sports clubs, user groups and community groups about the West Footscray Sports Facility Plan. We have spoken with four local schools and conducted surveys with five sporting clubs.” Cr Zakharov said the information has been used to develop seven concept plans. “None of the concepts include the removal of playgrounds or skate parks or reduction in open space, they show different options for placing the facilities,” he said. Brendan Borg, who has gathered more than 1000 signatures on an online petition to ‘Save parks and playgrounds in West Footscray’, said

the decision to broaden consultation showed the power of the community working together. “When it concerns shared spaces everyone needs to have the opportunity to have their say,” he said.

Tallow fined again by EPA Australian Tallow Producers at Brooklyn has been fined more than $8000 by the Environment Protection Authority for failing to complete works to control odour pollution that residents described as smelling like “rotting meat”. EPA regional manager Daniel Hunt said a pollution abatement notice was issued in December, 2017, in response to reports of offensive odour. Investigating officers confirmed a strong odour with “rotting meat characteristics”, he said. Australian Tallow makes meal and tallow from mixed abattoir materials. It has previously been fined $200,000 and ordered to pay nearly $820,000 in court costs for polluting the atmosphere with a “rotting carcass smell” three times between June and September, 2011. The company was ordered to also pay Hobsons Bay council $200,000 towards the Brooklyn Reserve Master Plan project, which includes a play space and recreation zone, plus planting 40 trees. The company was fined more than $7000 in 2013 after odour complaints. Mr Hunt said the most recent notice required the company to modify its waste receival and storage activities to prevent strong odour from escaping. “After two extensions of the deadline, an EPA inspection found the company had still failed to complete the work,” he said. Report pollution to the EPA’s 24-hour hotline on 1300 EPA VIC (1300 372 842). Goya Dmytryshchak

“Locals care dearly about these community hubs and how they are used, they need to be protected.” Meanwhile, Cr Zakharov said the new soccer sports academy at Footscray Park would develop “an underutilised” western section of the park. “Any final masterplan will seek to meet community needs including walking and dog access and possible after hours use of the grounds.”

Lovers of Indian pale ale will be heading to Hopheads in Point Cook in celebration of the Great Beer Festival. The week-long festival, starting from May 10, is made up of more than 300 events across Victoria and attracts thousands of people in appreciation of the best brewers and beer businesses in the country. Hopheads co-owners Adrian Chong, his wife Wai Lee Yong and Ryan Cochraine will pay homage to their favourite Indian pale ales at the flagship Point Cook store and Altona store. “IPA is a style of beer – one of the first interesting styles of beers that got the popularity of craft beers rolling,” Mr Chong said. “Historically, when the English used to ship

Yarraville meters’ time is up By Benjamin Millar Yarraville’s controversial parking meters will be dug out and used elsewhere, more than three years after the area’s traders first campaigned for their removal. The meters, which triggered a heavy protest from angered traders when they were introduced in 2015, have been dormant since they were switched off within months of their activation. Star Weekly last month reported guerrilla crafters had descended on the village

overnight to cover the meters with Where’s Wally-inspired outfits. Vandals stole most of the Wally heads within a day, but the suits have remained covering the meters. Disgruntled traders recently met western suburbs Liberal MP Bernie Finn, who used
Parliament to call on Local Government Minister Adem Somyurek to pressure Maribyrnong council to remove the meters entirely. “A lot of people apparently are not [going to Yarraville] because they are concerned that they will get into strife with the parking meters,” he said. “I ask the minister to have a chat to Maribyrnong council and to emphasise to them the importance of getting on with it and removing the parking meters.” Maribyrnong council acting planning services director Katy McMahon said the
council intended to take the parking meters out of Yarraville and use them in other locations. “We have always said that paid parking will remain as an option for alleviating parking conditions throughout the city,” she said. “However, since we are not currently using the meters in Yarraville at this time, and since there are more immediate needs elsewhere, it is now viable to move them.” Ms McMahon said any signage relating to paid parking has been removed. Traders have welcomed the decision to remove the meters.
Bottle caps lend a hand A not-for-profit charity has developed a top idea for giving amputees a helping hand. Envision has teamed up with community partners including the Seddon branch of Bendigo Bank to deliver the Helping Hands project, turning recycled plastic bottle caps into prosthetic hands and arms. The project uses a $300 3D printer and a handmade machine to turn bottle caps into filament, which is then used to custom-make hands that enable the wearer to carry out basic tasks such as holding a fork or picking up a cup. The team has set an ambitious target of collecting 1 million caps to help create 100 prosthetic limbs for children in disadvantaged communities throughout Cambodia and other Third World countries. Joe Ferlazzo, who helped develop the prototype, said it was a cheap, simple concept that could change somebody’s life.
Mr Ferlazzo said it took about 500 grams worth of recycled bottle caps, and 40 hours of work, to create one hand. “It’s so important for a child or adult to feel complete, and this does that,” he said. Envision manager Sean Teer said the project also trained and mentored long-term unemployed job seekers. Suzanne Saunders of Seddon Community Bank Branch said the local community response has already been fantastic. “We were only going to run the campaign for April, but will now continue it indefinitely.” Drop off points for the plastic caps include the bank, Footscray North Primary School, Footscray City Primary School, West Footscray Roosters Football Club and The Yarraville Club. West Footscray rail house gone By Benjamin Millar The last house left standing on a tract of open space along West Footscray’s rail tracks has been demolished, with the authority in control of the land under fire for failing to remove dumped and vandalised cars from further up the line. A VicTrack spokesman said the property at 97 Rupert Street had been leased for residential purposes in recent years, but was demolished by the outgoing tenant in accordance with lease provisions.
“A new lease for the property will not be pursued as the rail corridor through this part of western Melbourne is subject to planning for major transport projects, including Airport Rail Link and the Inland Rail Freight project,” he said. The decision not to lease the property is a blow for youth worker Les Twentyman, who has pushed for a parcel of the land to be made available for the construction of crisis youth accommodation. Maribyrnong council has also earmarked a parcel of VicTrack land near Tottenham
Wild about Heavy Harry Australia’s largest locomotive – known as Heavy Harry – is set to get a $150,000 roof over his head at Newport. Built at the Newport Railway Workshops in 1941, he is Victoria’s only heritage-listed steam locomotive. And Harry sure is heavy – in fact, he’s the heaviest non-articulated steam locomotive in the Southern Hemisphere, coming in at 264 tonnes when operational. Williamstown MP and Public Transport Minister Melissa Horne on Friday visited the Australian Railway Historical Society Museum at Newport to announce the he would be better protected. “Heavy Harry is a unique part of Victoria’s rich railway history and is now being preserved for future generations to enjoy,” she said. “The locomotive has an intriguing history and is the only train of its type in the world, so we are delighted to be able to protect one of the
icons of Victoria’s steam train era.” The H class locomotive H220 was added to the Victorian Heritage Register in 2008. He is listed as being of state significance for representing the peak of steam motive power technology in Victoria, being the only example of its class built and being the most powerful steam locomotive in the Victorian rail network. He was withdrawn from service in 1958 as steam power was replaced by diesel electric motive power in Victoria. The museum, which houses steam, diesel and electric locomotives and various other vehicles and railway artefacts, is open to the public on weekends. Call for headspace in Newport By Goya Dmytryshchak At 16, Lucy* has experienced anxiety her whole life. The Williamstown girl is among those who would like to see a headspace youth mental health support service established at Newport. Hobsons Bay council is campaigning for a satellite headspace to be set up at Newport Community Hub, in the lead up to the federal election. Lucy has been involved with Hobsons Bay UP, the council’s youth services at the hub, since year 9.
“I’m a part of Leaders Of Today [LOT] and our main thing is to raise either funds or awareness for issues that we feel a connection to or want to do that for,” she said. “When I was young and in primary school, I’d cry all the time. I was quite anxious by nature but my home life was quite strained. “My father wasn’t the best person – let’s just say that – and he sometimes physically abused my mother. “My nervous system was very wired when I was a little kid and that kind of kept going on and on from when I was very little up until now. “Anxiety’s always been a big thing, usually
in the form of sudden mood swings sometimes when I was younger, like fighting, getting nervous when it came to going home or doing stuff at school.” When Lucy started high school, she said she had a falling out with her father and her panic attacks became worse. “I stopped seeing my father and everything was smooth for a little while … but then during the middle of last year and the beginning of this year, things really began to drop again.” Hobsons Bay mayor Jonathon Marsden said the council had identified youth mental health as one its top three priorities.
He said there was currently a 10-week waiting time for youth counselling in Hobsons Bay. “In a 2017-18 youth survey, Deakin University found a high prevalence of depressive symptoms across Hobsons Bay’s primary and secondary school students,” he said. “Unfortunately, the journey of a young person from Hobsons Bay attending a headspace session in Sunshine or Werribee can take up to three hours. A house that straw built One of Altona’s straw houses is on the market. The former worker’s cottage at 169 Maidstone Street is one of only six heritage homes in Altona. It is listed on the Victorian Heritage register as being of local significance both on its own as one of four houses in a row known as the Solomit or Straw Houses Heritage Precinct. It was built in 1941 using a combination of straw insulation and a steel frame. The database stated the house, designed by renowned architect Marcus Barlow, is of local historic, aesthetic and technical significance. “The houses are significant as rare examples using a pioneering construction method that utilised unusual and innovatory building techniques as a consequence of materials shortages after the outbreak of World War 2,” the heritage database stated. Earth Garden editor Alan T Gray has studied
the history of Altona’s straw homes, which were proposed by Melbourne-based company Solomit in 1939. Mr Gray wrote that the local Apex club demolished one of the original five straw houses to raise funds but ran into difficulty. “The club members thought the demolition would be a ‘pushover’, but after much sweating and struggling, they eventually hired a front-end loader to demolish the house: it was too strong,” he wrote. Vendor James-Anthony Callea, who is moving to be closer to family, said the house had been extensively renovated and extended. “We’re definitely sorry to be leaving,” he said. The property has a price guide of $660,000-$720,000. It will be auctioned by hockingstuart on Saturday, May 25 at 11.30am. Goya Dmytryshchak

UPDATE ON THE WEST GATE TUNNEL PROJECT A key milestone in the building of the West Gate Tunnel Project has been reached with the arrival in Melbourne of the first of the two massive tunnel boring machines that will build the tunnel. Bella, the tunnel boring machine (TBM), is one of the biggest in the Southern Hemisphere, and is currently being assembled. Tunnelling will start mid-year at the northern portal in Yarraville and move south-west towards the southern portals in the West Gate Freeway near South Kingsville. The West Gate Tunnel, once complete, will provide an alternative to the West Gate Bridge and take trucks off residential streets. With construction well underway on the West Gate Freeway widening, progress is being made to relocate powerlines and sewer pipes so an extra two lanes can be added in each direction on the freeway, helping traffic move better. The section of the West Gate Freeway near Williamstown Road is a hive of activity where the exit ramp is being shifted to make room for a tunnel entrance that will take people to the city. It’s early days for construction activity at the city end of the project where a new road will be built above Footscray Road to take traffic from the tunnel to the city and into the port.
You may have noticed barriers on the side of the road and the shared use path has been realigned. This is what we need to do to create safe space to build the new road, while still keeping traffic moving. There’ll be more to come later this year. There is a lot happening around the project with periodic road closures and traffic disruptions, so stay in touch with what is happening in your area. Visit westgatetunnelproject.vic.gov.au/ traveldisruptions, and follow facebook.com/ westgatetunnelproject for regular updates.

We will establish new cycling and walking links to popular trails and parks. This includes a new 2.5 km elevated veloway which will give cyclists a safe and express route to and from the city, while rebuilding and retaining the existing ground-level path along Footscray Road. the team also has to have players that aren’t very mobile.” Costello described refereeing as “a weird challenge”. “Refereeing is something that people aspire to be perfect at but they never will be,” he said. “I never really seek out any spotlight … but I’m extremely humbled and it feels nice and honoured to be recognised.”
Disability Sport and Recreation chief executive Richard Amon said the awards showcased the contribution that people made to empower those with disabilities. “Each year we see new athletes emerge, incredible new initiatives and more organisations changing or building sporting infrastructure that is accessible,” he said. Winners will be announced on May 22.

Life just doesn’t end just because you are in a wheelchair - Liam Costello His first international tournament was in South Korea in 2011 and he refereed at the 2016 Paralympics in Rio. “These people show that life doesn’t end just because you’re in a wheelchair,” he said. “They show you can still do a lot of things. “I also run a basketball association so I’m used to seeing the basketball side of things being very inclusive as well.” Wheelchair rugby has a point classification for each player, ranging from .5 to 3.5. “The 3.5 players have a lot more mobility,” Costello said. “A .5 player is a player that needs help to get out of their day chair to get into their playing chair. “Each team has four players on the court. The four players in total, their points value can’t be more than eight. “So, it means that the sport has to include players that have got quite a bit of mobility and

Burcell Taka and his daughter Sophia, 9. (Damjan Janevski)
‘Pavarotti’ of Newport Newport’s Burcell Taka is hoping to turn heads with his audition for The Voice. Nine’s reality singing show returns for series eight later this month and Burcell’s audition airs on June 3. The 47-year-old father of two works at a warehouse packing groceries at night, where his colleagues refer to him as ‘Pavarotti’. He said it was his young daughter Sophia who signed him up for the show online and shot the video that he sent in. “I wanted to show my kids what it’s like to never give up and to always keep striving for your dreams,” Burcell said. “I want to be the kind of dad that practices that, not only talks about it.” Burcell said the application process was
scary. “Nothing actually can prepare you for the moment,” he said. “But I think what’s key, especially being an older person now, I’m able to think a little bit more clearly about how important it is to live in the moment and when you’re singing just be in that moment.” Burcell said he initially wanted Kelly Rowland’s chair to turn but leading up to the audition he kept changing his mind. “There were strengths and differences that I liked about every judge,” he said. The Voice premieres on Sunday, May 19 at 7pm on Nine and 9Now. Goya Dmytryshchak

Across the road from AW Langshaw Reserve (with playground) and a minute’s stroll from Altona North Primary School, this residence has all the expected gloss of modern builds, and a light-bouncing colour palette to match. Of the three grey-carpeted and fitted bedrooms upstairs, the main has a walk-in robe and en suite, as well as access to a balcony to soak up those park views. Main bathroom and toilet are separate. Within an expansive glossily tiled living hub, the sleek kitchen has a stone-topped island bench, lots of white seamless cupboards, glass splashback and all the mod-cons. A rear timber deck is flanked by a wedge of synthetic turf, while decorative trees along a brick wall promise much future leafiness. Ducted heating and cooling, an alarm and remote-controlled garage with internal access are included. The Circle shops are a short walk away.
Designed by renowned architect Marcus Barlow in 1941 and one of just six heritage homes left in Altona, The Straw House – so named for its straw insulation – has been beautifully renewed, both aesthetically and in construction fundamentals. It’s now a contemporary-chic gem, lavished with designer touches while respecting the past. Eye candy includes pendants from Satelite in Spotswood, recycled messmate vanities from Ingrain Designs, gorgeous fish-scale tiling in an Ilve-equipped kitchen and punchy bathrooms, a restored brick fireplace, Shaker-style kitchen cabinetry, Phoenix tapware and blackbutt flooring. The carpeted main bedroom of three has a mirrored robe with custom joinery. A timber deck has wooden seating and boxes and there’s a carport (with storage above) and attached shed. The showstopper house sits on about 375 square metres.

NEWpORT 135 John Liston Drive, 3015 Williams Real Estate: 9397 2000
Price: $1.06 million
The curves on display in the facade of this well-designed, owner-built residence are echoed inside, creating sensuous architectural lines, while polished floorboards all through the ground floor co-mingle with white wall paint and black window frames to deliver a streamlined flow. The kitchen, with laundry and powder room behind, is at the centre of spacious lounge and family-meals areas. It’s in here that the curves are particularly highlighted in a downlit bulkhead, black stone-topped island bench and a unique stainless-steel splashback. Mountains of kitchen storage will please the family cook, as will the Miele underbench oven cooktop and dishwasher. A retreat at the top of open-tread stairs is surrounded by the three fitted and carpeted bedrooms, main bathroom (with spa tub) and separate toilet. The main, with fitted out walk-in robe and fully tiled en suite with walk-in shower, has access to the tiled front balcony. French doors open to an east-facing paved courtyard with concrete planter boxes and enough space for a large family barbie. A remote-controlled double garage – accessed from the rear – has attic storage with potential to create a studio/bedroom, STCA. The station is 550 metres away and schools, cafes, shops and The Strand waterfront are also all within easy walking distance. 14 MARIBYRNONG & HOBSONS BAY STAR WEEKLY \ MAY 15, 2019

WILLIAMSTOWN 25 Lakeside Place, 3016 Sweeney Williamstown: 9399 9111
Price: $1.15 million – $1.25 million
It’s in the prized Rifle Range estate, but this double-storey residence has the additional cachet of direct parkland access via a gate in the back garden. The parkland links with the wonderful Jawbone Reserve and wetlands, as well as the bay beyond. The restful vistas are best experienced from a large rear balcony off the main living domain. The distinctive roofline comes into play internally, with the tall ceiling in the upper-level living hub replicating its arc, while square clerestory windows and bulkheads supplement architectural

character. Wall paint is white, carpet is grey, hardwood floorboards are matte and windows come with streamlined rollerblinds. Up top, there’s an expansive family-meals space, and – behind double doors – a lounge room with french doors to the front balcony. The family room’s split-system and contemporary gas log fire provide a retreat from the variables of a seaside climate. The kitchen is a sleek affair, with charcoal-toned seamless cabinetry and stone benches. It’s equipped with top-notch Miele appliances.
The fourth fitted bedroom (with split-system) is also up here – across the way from a powder room and walk-in storage area. The remaining three fitted bedrooms, including the main, are downstairs, as are the laundry and the main bathroom with enclosed toilet. The expansive main bedroom at the back has a walk-in robe behind an island wall, as well as a smart dual-basin en suite with stone-topped vanity, white subway tiling, and a tub and shower in the walk-in wet area.

Underscoring the main bedroom’s haven feel, a glass slider opens to a north-facing timber deck nestled within a pristine garden setting. Also in the frame are ducted heating and cooling and a double garage that adjoins a storage room. FERRERO ROCHER CAKE
12321532-HM36-16
nightmare is ridiculous; preposterous. In fact, better to think of it as a share platter for two – and at $14 each, that’s a dead-set bargain. As well as slight variations of the meat deals ordered by Nat and Bennie, it also features BBQ sausages (rostiljska kobasica), pork neck medallion and dimljena vesalica (smoked pork tenderloin). The meat is served with kajmak (a sort of creamed feta), ajvar (red pepper relish) and cabbage salad. It’s all very good. There’s a final delicious surprise in store for us at Balkan Grill. Finding Balkan grilled fare at an Ardeer soccer club is thoroughly wonderful, of course. But finding all that AND that the chef also creates all his own desserts – including cakes and baklava – is superbly shocking. Bennie nods enthusiastically during his consumption of Danilo’s Ferrero Rocher cake. The price is $4.50. Gosh.

A Balkan restaurant, affiliated to a soccer club, in Ardeer – perfect for a CTS adventure. Balkan Grill is located in the clubrooms of Westgate Sindjelic FC and is just a few weeks old when we – myself, Bennie and Nat – pay a dinner visit. Balkan Grill is the brainchild of Danilo Majmunovic. He’s an experienced chef who’s cooked all over Australia. And now he’s set up shop in Ardeer – and we reckon that’s a smart move. It’s not like there’s a lot of competition in this rather lovely residential backwater. And the prices hit the CTS sweet spot – a few things over $20, but not many. Nat goes with the cevapi u slanini ($20) – Danilo’s cevapi wrapped in bacon and served with chopped onion on a “Sarajevo somun” roll. Nat likes his cevapi plenty, accompanying them with a side serve of good fries ($3.50). Bennie selects gurmanska pljeskavica – 285 grams of homemade minced pork and beef, seasoned with secret ingredients, filled with triple smoked ham and cheese ($20). Again, this is superb meat and Bennie loves it. The cheese and ham really is top-grade stuff. Bennie, too, gets a side of chips with his meat offering – and also a side of Balkan Grill’s cabbage salad ($2). He gives the Balkan Grill version a hefty two thumbs up. I order the mixed grill ($28) – and to be honest, I’m not quite sure what the hell I was thinking. This half-kilogram vegetarian’s

SPORT Altona Magic pays heavily for list of missing players A mounting list of absentees is doing Altona Magic no favours in the National Premier League. Four regular first team players – Michiel Hemmen (ankle), Sami Nour (groin), Ross Archibald (knee) and Lirim Elmazi (suspension) – were missing from the line-up in the Magic’s 2-1 loss to South Melbourne at Paisley Park on Saturday night. It eventually took its toll on the Magic as it fizzled out in the second half. Magic football operations manager Rubin Todorovski said the outs had stretched the depth of the newly-promoted team. “We’re pretty much at our bare bones,” he said. “You’ve got these boys who haven’t played a lot of [first team] football that need to come in. “The transfer window opens up on Tuesday. “We’ll be looking to bring in a couple of new faces.”
The first half was an arm wrestle between Altona Magic and South Melbourne. The game exploded to life after half time when the Magic got the go-ahead goal through a thunderbolt from captain Troy Ruthven. The ball seemed to just bob up into the wheelhouse of Troy Ruthven for the skipper to unleash a powerful shot. Todorovski said it was a much-deserved goal for Ruthven’s tireless work in the midfield. “If we had another 10 players like Troy, we’d be unstoppable,” he said. The last 40 minutes of the game belonged to South Melbourne who only needed two minutes and an element of luck to find an equaliser in the 52nd minute. South’s Marcus Schroen took a free kick hemmed up on the byline and what seemed to be an apparent cross drifted over Magic goalkeeper Daniel Collison and into the top corner for a goal at the far post.

“That goal gave them belief,” Todorovski said. “They started to up the tempo and we were struggling to stay with them.” South Melbourne hit the lead in the 63rd
minute when Giuseppe Marafioti latched on to a long ball and beat Collison one-on-one. The Magic had no answers and they limped to a second consecutive loss. “There were a lot of tired boys on our side,” Todorovski said. “South sensed that and just kept on going.” While Elmazi will return from suspension for Altona Magic, Johnny Stojcevski also picked up a fifth yellow card and will be unavailable to play against Pascoe Vale at CB Smith Reserve on Friday night. Archibald is out for the season with an ACL injury, while Nour could be up to month away with his groin issue. Hemmen’s troublesome ankle is a week to week proposition. It’s little wonder why the seventh-placed Magic is hoping to be active in the transfer window. Lance Jenkinson
Switch off proves costly By Lance Jenkinson Spotswood will go into the Western Region Football League division 1 interleague break holding a solid 3-2 record, but knowing it could be a whole lot better. The Woodsmen have been in a position of strength in both of their losses against premiership-contending sides, only to allow a run-on that has brought about its downfall. The Anthony Eames-coached Woodsmen won three of the four quarters against Werribee Districts at McLean Reserve on Saturday, only for all of their hard work to be undone when they were unable to halt a spurt of five unanswered goals in the third quarter. The Woodsmen went down by three points. It is top of Eames’ list to find a fix. “For us the glass is half empty,” he said. “We’ve had opportunities against Altona and now Werribee Districts where we were up and we let them get a run-on and haven’t addressed it during the course of the quarter and we’ve waited until the quarter time break to address it. “Against the top outfits in this comp, you can’t do that because you end up too far behind.” Spotswood switched off at the stoppages during the third quarter. The Woodsmen had either neutralised or bettered their opposition in that area in building an 11-point lead at half time. They also had their way in that area in the last quarter, when they fought back to within a kick before the siren ended their fightback. It was that third quarter lapse that cost Spotswood. “Our pressure around the footy, at the stoppages in particular, wasn’t at the standard that we were in the first half,” Eames said. “Big Will Sullivan is always going to get his hands on it [for Werribee Districts in the ruck], particularly at centre bounces and they got us there a couple of times. “Nick Buykx I thought hurt us a little bit, [Rhyce] Prismall and these guys they roll through there for them. “If you give them space, they’re going to hurt you.” Spotswood did a lot of good in the game and showed it will be a contender. Their two losses against Altona and Werribee Districts – two genuine premiership threats – have come by a combined 13 points. Eames was thrilled with how well the defence held up and picked out Grant Williams for praise after his enthralling duel with Werribee Districts small forward Andrew Panayi. “Our backline worked hard all day against a real quality small forward line,” Eames said. 30 MARIBYRNONG & HOBSONS BAY STAR WEEKLY \ MAY 15, 2019

Jets fade out in final quarter

Gareth Newton continues to be the Swiss army knife of the Spotswood team. Whatever challenge is thrown the way of Newton, he embraces with a real vigour. “He played a variety of roles from centre half back and then went forward and played in the ruck at certain stages,” Eames said. Steven O’Bryan was the other standout for Spotswood, also used in a variety of positions
from forward to midfield. Newton, Jordan Boyd and Wayne Patak kicked two goals each in a low scoring game for the Woodsmen, but it was to no avail. Meanwhile, Altona had a comfortable 123-point win over newly promoted Point Cook. Elliot Cavallaro sparked the Vikings with six goals, while Joel Magnabosco was named best-afield.
Western Jets managed to stick with ladder-leader Dandenong Stingrays for three quarters before they were trampled in a 63-point defeat in the NAB League at Downer Oval on Saturday. The Jets were blown away in the fourth quarter as the scintillating Stingrays piled on seven goals to one. Darcy Cassar was the main possession winner on the day for the Western Jets with 29 disposals, including 20 kicks, nine handballs and three marks. Eddie Ford (20 disposals, two goals), William Kennedy (18 disposals) and Daly Andrews (17 disposals) were the other prolific ball winners for the Jets. Andrews was named as the Jets best player on the day. A Werribee Districts product, Andrews is one of a number of players invited to an AFL medical screening session on May 22 ahead of the big league’s mid-season rookie draft. Williamstown’s Mitch Hibberd and Footscray’s Kyle Dunkley have also received invitations. The loss means the Western Jets crashed to eighth place on the ladder with a 3-3 record. The Jets face a struggling Geelong Falcons in a crucial game at Avalon Airport Oval on Saturday. Meanwhile, Western Jets finished the NAB League girls season with a 51-point loss to Dandenong Stingrays. The Jets only goal of the day came through Laura Wright. Midfielder Ruby Tripodi rounded out a stellar season with another solid performance for the Jets. Lance Jenkinson

Balla bounces back from injury to take Oceania belt
Western suburbs fighter Qamil Balla packs a punch but also has the dancing feet to catch opponents off guard. (Damjan Janevski)
Western suburbs boxer Qamil Balla has claimed his second World Boxing Association Oceania title. The latest title belt is the most precious for Balla, who claimed the WBA Oceania super lightweight division with a win by TKO over Indonesia’s Hero Tito at Grand Star Receptions in Altona North last week. The previous title Balla won in 2017 – the WBA Oceania lightweight division – was an interim belt, but now he has a title belt all to his own after his eye-catching victory over Tito. “This was a full title, whereas the last one was an interim, so it never feels like the full thing when you’re the interim champion,” Balla said. “This one is the proper champion belt and it feels real good.” Balla had not been in a professional fight for 14 months. In his last serious bout, he broke a knuckle and had to give it time to heal.
It was almost a case of out of sight, out of mind for Balla, because once he returned he struggled to line up a big bout that he desired. Eventually Tito answered the call and they locked horns for the Oceania title. Balla admitted he had concerns over whether his knuckle injury would have an impact on his boxing. “I was just happy the fists still worked,” he said with a chuckle. Balla is 29 and a much smarter boxer than he once was. His experience in the ring has led to him being a little more calculated and a little less cavalier in the way he approaches a fight. While he would not shy away from brawling in the ring, he prefers to let his fast feet and smart tactics win the way. “It’s just dancing in the ring to be honest,” Balla said. “I can turn on that fiery redhead from Hoppers Crossing any time I want and I

know he’s a bit of a fan favourite, but it’s just that it makes the night a bit harder for me and my family because I come home with a bunch of cuts and bruises. “It can also turn it into a 50-50 fight because it’s boxing at the end of the day and everyone can punch and you can get clipped by a nice one, so I stick to my game plan, box smart, allow one big shot, then I can go in and finish and that’s exactly what I did. “It was one of those times where the game plan spookily actually worked 100 per cent.” Balla was thrilled to win on home soil. The Altona North resident lives a stone’s throw away from Grand Star Receptions and treats it like his home venue. Balla said his manager and promoter are “rubbing their hands together” about the doors this victory will open for him in the near future. Lance Jenkinson

By Lance Jenkinson Williamstown CYMS had a long-term vision to be one of the key developers of young football talent in the Hobsons Bay area. After rolling out plans and committing extra resources, the CYs spent years putting in the hard yards to ensure the blueprint was followed, even though it would be some time before the fruits of their labour began to show. The CYs seem to have hit a development sweet spot this year. They have three players – Nick Ebinger, Kallan Dawson and Ben Connolly – on Williamstown’s list in the Victorian Football League. There are five CYs players – Josh Kellett, Declan Edwards, Archi Manton, Liam Conway and Tane Roordink – on the Western Jets list in the NAB League. That is a lot of elite talent walking out the door for Williamstown CYMS, but that is exactly what the club wanted. “The mentality can be that you don’t want to lose players, but if you’ve got players going to that space then you know your program is in the right place,” CYs senior coach Mathew Montebello said. “Those three players that have gone on to Willy VFL were overlooked by the Jets and haven’t gone through the Jets system. “They’ve come through our system.” Williamstown CYMS’ stronger focus on player development has a two-fold effect. Players in the CYs program become better footballers as a result of the tailored coaching and that should result in better performance, which could open up doors to elite competitions. A growing elite youth base will also be a valuable source of talent for CYs seniors. Montebello works closely with under-19 coach Con Terzoglou, who he describes as “extremely passionate” about player development. Montebello is aware of the young talent Terzoglou is nurturing because the club’s focus dictates they work closely together and there is no divide between the two teams. Montebello and Terzoglou’s working relationship is all about preparing the teenagers for senior football. “Our program is set up so it’s connected, it’s one program,” Montebello said. “Our program looks at blending under-19 players into our senior program, so very rarely does a player come up into senior football where they haven’t already played a couple of games of senior football, but we protect that space a fair bit. “At the moment he’s got four kids that I could say straight away ‘he’s playing senior footy’, but that just weakens the under-19s program, so we try and make sure that program is strong first. “We think it’s a pretty special connection that has led to those players being on the Jets list and on the VFL list.”

Hockey
Altona has claimed its first win of the Hockey Victoria women’s premier league season. The Seagulls did it in style with a 3-1 victory over Powerhouse/St Kilda at the Altona Hockey Ground on Saturday. Jessica Brennan scored a double and Claudia Beamish added the other in the Seagulls breakthrough win. Meanwhile, Footscray has soared into third on the ladder with four wins from the opening five games. The Bulldogs were barking again on Saturday after a 1-0 win over Camberwell. In men’s premier league, Altona had a thrilling 3-3 tie with Powerhouse/St Kilda, while Footscray went down 5-1 to Camberwell.
Netball
Who can stop City West Falcons from defending its Victorian Netball League championship division title? The Falcons have started the season on a roll, winning their opening seven games. Marg Lind’s team cruised to a 65-47 victory over Boroondara Express at the State Netball and Hockey Centre on Wednesday night to remain a game clear on top of the ladder. Falcons goal shooter Tharjini Sivalingam starred with 61 goals at a 97 per cent efficiency. The Falcons will face old rivals Melbourne University Lightning at SNHC on Wednesday night.
Cycling
Nick Ebinger is one of the most talented players to come out of the Williamstown CYMS system. (Mark Wilson)
The most exciting talents to come out of Williamstown CYMS in recent times are Ebinger and Dawson. Ebinger has been described as a “phenomenal talent” who is on the verge of regular senior football with Williamstown. “He does things on the footy field that make you go ‘wow’,” Montebello said. Dawson is still raw at VFL level, but no
less talented. He has played three games for Williamstown this season. “He’s a six-foot-four half back and runs like the wind,” Montebello said. “A late bloomer, he’s going to get a lot of attention now.” Williamstown CYMS is top of the ladder in the Victorian Amateur Football Association Premier C.
Matthias Kiernan has taken out race four of the Footscray Cycling Club’s winter season. Kiernan handled the hilly course at She Oaks the better to cross the line ahead of Joshua Zammit and Jared Raymes in A-grade.
