Special day for a mum

(Damjan Janevski)

Sarah Scorrar is looking forward to celebrating her first Mother’s Day with husband Paul and four-month-old son Finn. To celebrate the special day, Ms Scorrar and her family will be walking to support breast cancer research. “Paul and I are doing the Mother’s Day Classic … and then we might go out for lunch,” she said. “I did it [the classic] last year when I was pregnant with Finn – and now he’ll be on the outside.” The new mum said motherhood presented many challenges, but she wouldn’t change any of it for the world. “Everything is really new,” she said. “We’ve learnt a lot, but it’s super rewarding watching him smiling and change all the time. “It’s been very challenging and rewarding at the same time.” The couple happily welcomed baby Finn into the world on New Year’s Day this year. Plastic burn-off busted By Goya Dmytryshchak An Altona business has been caught burning plastic after being ordered to remove 100 tonnes of illegally-stored recyclable waste from a warehouse. The tenant of the Aylesbury Drive warehouse, MJM Fabrication Pty Ltd, had been given until Tuesday of last week to remove co-mingled waste that included bottles, cans, plastic and paper. The operation occurred without permits from Hobsons Bay council or the Environment Protection Authority, which has been called on by the council to enforce the removal. The unlawful storage of waste and burning of plastics comes amid a parliamentary inquiry into the crisis facing recycling and

waste management in Victoria. Hobsons Bay and many other metropolitan councils had been forced to send recyclables to landfill after the EPA banned SKM Recycling from accepting waste at its Coolaroo and Laverton North plants in February due to the fire risk of stockpiles. Hobsons Bay mayor Jonathon Marsden said officers inspecting the Altona premises last week to see if the waste had been removed instead found the operator had been burning recyclable plastics. “The tenants of the warehouse on Aylesbury Drive have not removed the 6000 cubic metres of co-mingled kerbside plastics,” he said. “At the request of council, the occupier immediately ceased incineration of plastic waste and dismantled the incinerator as they

did not have the required planning permit from council. “As the tenant has now removed the furnace, it is no longer a planning matter for council. “The occupier also committed to removing the waste, however this has not yet occurred. “Unfortunately, it is beyond council’s power to enforce the removal of the waste.” Cr Marsden said the council was – for the second time – calling on the EPA to act. “On 13 March, 2019, council initially requested that the EPA enforce the removal of this waste material,” he said. “We have once more sought EPA assistance and asked that the EPA ensures the removal of the waste from the site and apply the necessary sanctions in accordance with their compliance and enforcement policy.”

The EPA said the authority “continues to work with council on a resolution”. The council first became aware of the issue in mid-February and conducted an initial inspection before involving the EPA. Fumigation had to be carried out to kill swarms of flies after the warehouse’s illegal stockpile was detected. The council then conducted a joint inspection with the EPA and the site operator. As a result of that inspection, the council gave the operator until April 1 to remove the waste. The operator successfully requested an extension to April 30 for “extenuating reasons”. It is understood the tenant leased the property last December. MJM Fabrication Pty Ltd was contacted for comment.

There has been a lot of concern expressed by the community around possible new developments at both West Footscray and at Footscray Park. To read more head to maribyrnong.vic.gov.au/parks www.maribyrnong.vic.gov.au

Stony Creek gets $2m pledge By Benjamin Millar Labor has vowed to spend $2 million to protect and revitalise Stony Creek if it forms government after the May 18 election. The popular waterway, which runs through Cruickshank Park in Yarraville, was devastated by chemical run-off from last year’s Tottenham warehouse fire. Opposition environment and water spokesman Tony Burke visited Stony Creek last Wednesday morning to announce the contaminated waterway had been selected as a priority project under the party’s $200 million Urban Rivers and Corridors Program. Mr Burke said urban rivers have been

historically mismanaged and it was time to return them to their status as home of biodiversity. “If elected, one of the things we will be doing will be putting aside $2 million for Stony Creek, which will be a huge down payment on making sure we continue the work and the state and the local government aren’t on their own,” he said. The $2 million will be used for protective works recommended by a community reference group formed in the wake of the fire impact. Gellibrand MP Tim Watts said Stony Creek was “an urban oasis” before becoming heavily contaminated from chemical run-off following the fire. “All of that water flowing down the creek …

came and cleaned out all the biodiversity here,” he said. “We’ve been running a community-based campaign collecting signatures to show how much this creek means to us.” Mr Watts said community groups such Friends of Stony Creek and Friends of Cruickshank Park had played a big part in driving the preservation and rehabilitation of Stony Creek. Friends of Cruickshank Park secretary Sue Vittori said Stony Creek had become the most polluted urban waterway in the country. “Rehabilitating the creek is a very important thing, but it’s pointless if it just happens again and again – and for 30 years it’s been happening again and again,” she said.

Hard solutions for soft plastic issue The future of kerbside recycling of soft plastics in Hobsons Bay is in doubt amid the Chinese recycling crisis. Hobsons Bay council introduced flexible plastics recycling for households in 2016. It is one of four pioneering councils to introduce the state-government funded initiative, along with Boroondara, Cardinia and Nillumbik. Plastic bags and flexible plastic packaging can be collected into one plastic bag, tied up and placed in the recycling bin. However, the project is being reviewed by the four councils and the Metropolitan Waste and Resource Recovery Group in light of data collected over the past 18 months and challenges in Victoria’s recycling industry. In January 2018, China began to implement a 0.5 per cent contamination threshold for imported waste, affecting those in the Australian recycling industry who rely on China to process materials such as plastics. Hobsons Bay mayor Jonathon Marsden said it was disappointing that soft plastics recycling was in question due to “factors outside of our control”. “Council will keep the community informed and provide timely updates to the project,” he said. “In the meantime, council encourages households to continue to reduce flexible plastic use such as cling wrap and sandwich bags, and recycle flexible plastics. “Another option to recycle flexible plastics is through the REDcycle bins at Coles and Woolworths supermarkets.” Altona North environmental science student Sandy Gonzalez de la Vega is among a groundswell of Hobsons Bay residents pushing to reduce plastic waste. “It’s fantastic that our council accepts soft plastics for recycling instead of sending it to landfill,” she said. “It’s a great start, however, waste minimisation should be our priority and is the most environmentally-friendly option.

Sandy Gonzalez de la Vega and Boomerang bags at IGA Altona. (Joe Mastroianni)

“Rather than saying ‘it’s OK to keep buying, using and throwing out so much plastic because it gets recycled’, we should become smart consumers by using re-usable products,

buying things in less packaging, and throwing out less.” Goya Dmytryshchak

Park asbestos fill removed Asbestos-contaminated fill at a popular West Footscray dog park has been removed and Maribyrnong council has changed its internal processes following community outcry about its handling of the asbestos discovery. Star Weekly last week reported samples of material found at Martin Reserve returned a positive result for friable asbestos, prompting calls for the park to be shut down until it was remediated. The council maintained the park was “of no concern to public safety” after two samples taken for analysis returned negative findings. But it last week bowed to public pressure to remove the rubbish-strewn fill and replace it with clean fill ahead of turfing. Park users raised their concerns at last Tuesday night’s council meeting. Council chief executive Stephen Wall said the council had reviewed its internal reporting processes. “This issue wasn’t escalated to a senior management issue until later in the stage, and as soon as it was brought to my attention and the attention of the senior staff that were involved, action was taken,” he said. “We’ve certainly changed our processes internally around how we escalate the issues of seriousness such as the assertion that there’s contamination in any of our parks. “All I can say is there’s been an unfortunate set of circumstances that led to a delay in this being escalated and being treated with the seriousness that it absolutely deserves.” Benjamin Millar

Bulldogs launch ‘heritage’ plans By Benjamin Millar Footscray’s Whitten Oval could once again host AFL matches under a multi-million redevelopment that would cater for crowds of almost 20,000 people. The Western Bulldogs have released a master plan developed by architecture firm Populous for the oval precinct, due to be rolled out over a number of stages. Stage one, now completed via a $5 million state government grant, included an upgrade to women’s changerooms, toilets and a scoreboard. The ambitious second stage, expected to cost between $40 and $45 million, includes upgrading the playing surface, rebuilding the Whitten Stand to help increase spectator capacity to 18,000, upgrading football department facilities and making the lighting broadcast quality. A new entry plaza and running track will also be built, along with development of a secondary training venue elsewhere in Footscray. Later stages – tipped to take the overall project total close to $150 million – will include residential redevelopment of a large parcel of land to the south of the oval that was last year gifted to the club by the state government. The area could also include childcare, eateries and a medical and fitness health hub. Maribyrnong council is currently investigating the potential realignment of Cross Street to accommodate the works. Bulldogs chief executive Ameet Bains said the master plan reflects the club’s long-term vision of the Whitten Oval precinct as a magnet for players and a hub for the west. “A redeveloped precinct will provide an amazing base for our four teams, and we expect the football facilities to be a huge drawcard for

the club keeping and attracting star players,” he said. “Our immediate focus is to improve the experience of watching football at the venue to ensure that VU Whitten Oval remains one of the key AFL priority venues for AFLW

matches.” The club has earmarked “a significant capital contribution” to the next stage, but will be seeking further state government funding. Mr Bains said the upgrade of the oval could pave the way for the return of the occasional heritage game.

“We would love to see the occasional heritage AFL match return to the ground, in time,” Bains said. The state government has provided $1 million funding for the club to conduct more detailed designs. No firm timeline has been set for the works.

Theft victim’s cautionary tale By Goya Dmytryshchak A Seabrook woman is calling for secure bike parking at train stations to combat “rampant” theft after having two bikes stolen in the past six months. Cath Stephensen said thieves cut through a metal fence to steal her $3000 bike from Aircraft station at Laverton on April 23. She had bought the Trek Verve+ electric assist, which she named ‘Rosie’, to replace a bike stolen from Williams Landing station last October.

“Rosie was locked to the fence … with a high quality D-lock,” Ms Stephensen said. “The thief cut through the fence railing to get the bike. “The feedback I’m getting through social media is that people are just saying it’s rampant.” Bicycle Network recommends cyclists use two locks or a Parkiteer cage at stations because they are one of the most common places for bike theft. However, even Parkiteer cages are getting broken into with a recent case at Williams Landing station. Last year, there were 114 reported bike

thefts in Hobsons Bay (up from 81 in 2017), 148 in Wyndham (up from 134) and 210 in Maribyrnong (up from 168). Ms Stephensen, who believes reported thefts are the tip of the iceberg, said when she earned enough money to buy a new bike she would take greater precautions. “I will be getting a lock with an inbuilt alarm and I will be getting insurance,” she said. Senior Sergeant Chris Allen said while there had been an increase in bike thefts last year, local intelligence indicated this trend has stabilised in recent months.

Old Willy comes to life Williamstown’s past will be revealed during evening projection tours to be held this month to celebrate the centenary of the waterside suburb. On May 17, 1919, Williamstown was proclaimed a city by the state governor, Sir Arthur Stanley, during a visit to the newly-completed Williamstown Town Hall. The free tours will involve participants wearing headphones and listening to a history of Williamstown, while walking around the commercial precinct to see projections at various spots. Megan Slattery, who wrote the script for the tours, said they were designed to give people a sense of what life in Williamstown may have been like 100 years ago. “At each stop, we’ll be looking at the building we’re in front of, talking about what life might have been like in the commercial precinct of Williamstown back at the time of the naming of Williamstown being a city,” she said. “I guess

we’re trying to give participants a bit of a feel about what it might have been like back then … a time of horses and deliveries and the personal kind of feel you got from going from shop to shop be it bakeries or butchers. “We touch on things like the ‘six o’clock swill’ … 100 years ago when the pubs had to close at six o’clock, all the sailors and the factory workers were swilling down their beers as quickly as they could before they had to go home.” Four free tours will be held: Friday, May 17 and Saturday, May 18 at 6pm and 7.30pm both days. Bookings are essential via heritagehobsonsbay.eventbrite.com. Other tour bookings can be made at hobsonsbaytickets.com. The $18 tour includes morning tea and champagne. Railing against Libs’ list By Alesha Capone The western suburbs have been overlooked in a federal Liberal government promise to spend $300 million on new carparks at Melbourne train stations if the party is re-elected at the upcoming federal election. The Liberals said the funding would go towards new “park and ride facilities” at 30 Melbourne stations on the Belgrave/Lilydale, Frankston, Sandringham, Craigieburn, South Morang and Hurstbridge train lines. The state government and Wyndham

council expressed disappointment there were no western suburbs stations included. Victorian Transport Infrastructure Minister Jacinta Allan told SBS she believed that the announcement was a “political stunt”. Wyndham mayor Mia Shaw said that commuter parking at Wyndham’s railway stations was “at capacity”. “We’re disappointed that there have not been any commitments to address parking at Wyndham’s train stations by the Liberal National coalition during this election,” she said.

“Wyndham is one of the fastest growing municipalities in Australia, so we are in need of investment in this area. “We are urging all candidates in the federal election to present real solutions to this issue.” Federal Lalor MP Joanne Ryan said “it should be no surprise to anyone locally that the Liberal Party has failed to commit to invest in the west of Melbourne”. After Star Weekly posted the news of the Liberal announcement on Facebook last week, several readers commented that Wyndham’s train stations were in need of more carparks as

existing parks often fill up by 7am on weekdays. Amar described the Liberal announcement as a “blatant disregard of the current situation in the west”. But the federal Minister for Cities, Urban Infrastructure and Population, Alan Tudge, said that the Liberals had allocated a significant amount of funding to transport projects in Melbourne’s west, including $2 billion for fast rail between Geelong and Melbourne, $5 billion for the Melbourne Airport Rail Link and $200 million towards the widening of the Tullamarine Freeway.

The road to adventure Children’s author Andy Griffiths rolled into town last week to launch the 16th Williamstown Literary Festival program. Festival favourites including Leigh Hobbs and Claire Saxby will also be among about 80 authors at 40 events in the two-day festival on June 15 and 16. This year’s theme is ‘Choose your own adventure’. Griffiths, who has only missed one festival in 16 years, will be part of the Stereo Stories in concert at Williamstown Town Hall on the Saturday. The concert also features stories from Arnold Zable, Melanie Cheng, Torre DeRoche, Jock Serong, Rijn Collins and Brian Nankervis, backed by The Stereo Stories band. Griffiths will also do his traditional Sunday morning talk for families. “I really look forward to this event each year,” he said. “It’s a relaxed freewheeling session

where the kids can – and do – ask anything. I can’t always answer their questions but we have a lot of laughs.” Also confirmed for the festival are Kerry O’Brien, Clementine Ford, George Megalogenis, Alison Lester and David Astle, Claire Wright and Judy Horocek. The Willy Lit Fest opening night soiree at Sebastian Beach Grill, featuring international best-selling author Caroline Overington in conversation with festival director and comedian Stella Kinsella, is on Friday, June 14 from 6.30-9pm. “The 2019 Willy Lit Fest will be hosting robust discussions, asking how we are travelling as a nation, what is the heart of the matter, whom do we trust,” Kinsella said. Bust a move and get yourself on to the newest, greenest buses in town. The first of 50 new hybrid-technology buses was recently launched on high-capacity routes including Wyndham’s 170, 180, 192, 439, 441 and 443, as well as other routes in the west. The environmentally-friendly fleet is being introduced by bus operator CDC Victoria, a subsidiary of ComfortDelGro. All 50 buses in the hybrid fleet will be in service on CDC routes in Wyndham, Oakleigh and Sunshine by mid-2022. Body manufacturing and fit-outs of the hybrid buses is being completed by Volgren in Dandenong, and all the buses will feature Volvo’s Parallel Hybrid driveline and meet Euro 6 emission standards. In testing, the driveline was shown to reduce nitrogen oxide and particulate emissions by up to 50 per cent, as well as reduce fuel and carbon dioxide emissions by up to 40 per cent. CDC Victoria chief executive Nicholas Yap said his team was proud to introduce the buses to the fleet. “Our new fleet of hybrid buses is an exciting development which demonstrates our ongoing commitment to delivering transport innovation by reducing both the emissions and fuel consumption,” he said. “As a business, we’re deeply committed to helping shape a better future for the next generation through reducing our carbon footprint.”

St John Ambulance Victoria has officially opened its revamped museum at Williamstown, which houses artefacts dating back to 1883. Gordon Botwright, St John Ambulance Victoria chief executive, said the museum, which first opened in 2004, had been spruced up to create a more inviting space. As for St John’s history, Mr Botwright said it could be traced back to 1099.

‘‘

There is obviously a very close connection with the history - Gordon Botwright

’’

“1099 is the first time that there is a connection with a group of monks who in the name of St John – for those with a biblical background it’s St John the Baptist as opposed to St John the Apostle – went out and assisted those who were suffering and distressed and in danger associated with the Crusades that occurred in the Middle East,” he said. “Jumping very quickly forward, at St John in Victoria we’ve been in Victoria now for 136 years. We were the original ambulance service, as we were the original SES service, too.” He said the museum had original equipment for stretchering and moving people, artefacts showing the development of defibrillation and CPR, the different uniforms of volunteers and photographs. “There is obviously a very close connection with the history, by and large, mostly of Melbourne,” Mr Botwright said. The museum, at the corner of the Esplanade and Garden Street, Williamstown, is open Thursday and Sunday from 10am-4pm.

Mayor shoulders trip expenses By Benjamin Millar Maribyrnong mayor Martin Zakharov has headed off controversy over a trip to China next week in a bid to woo tourists, agreeing to pay his own travel and accommodation expenses. Cr Zakharov will join three other Victorian mayors on an official visit to Victoria’s sister state Jiangsu Province, led by Melbourne lord mayor Sally Capp. The mayors will take part in the Victoria-Jiangsu Mayors’ Forum and the Nexus: Jiangsu-Victoria Start-up Summit, featuring at least 15 Victorian start-ups.

A report on the trip, tabled at last week’s ordinary council meeting, stated participation provides an opportunity to “promote Maribyrnong and advance shared interests in smart cities, innovation, and start-ups to assist in achieving council’s tourism and economic development strategic objectives”. The May 14-18 trip was expected to cost ratepayers $3900 in expenses, but Cr Zakharov has agreed to pay his own way to avoid the kind of ratepayer backlash that met a 2017 ‘active transport’ study tour to the Netherlands by then mayor Catherine Cumming and deputy mayor Sarah Carter.

‘‘

If council thinks it’s worthwhile they should be paying - Simon Crawford

’’

Councillor Mia McGregor told last week’s council meeting that Cr Zakharov agreeing to fund his own travel showed sensitivity to community concerns around the original proposal that the council fund the trip. “We need to be careful with what we consider doing with ratepayers’ money and to really be reflecting on council’s core business … I

myself didn’t think it would be worth council investing ratepayers’ money into it.” Cr Simon Crawford said he supported the mayor joining the trip, but was concerned by the precedent. “I believe if council thinks it’s worthwhile they should be paying that expense.” Cr Zakharov said he hopes the trip will help steer some of the growing Chinese tourism market towards Maribyrnong. “Seeing as we do have a lot of contentious discussion around the rating system and costs overall, it’s going to save a lot of trouble if I pay for it,” he said.

Sea Scouts set sail The 4th Williamstown Sea Scouts will this month name their hall in honour of the Boon Wurrung indigenous people. The naming will take place at a cultural day being held as part of the National Heritage Festival. “Sea Scouts imagine their hall as a ship, with a ship’s bell, jackstaff and navigation lights, but it needed a ship’s name,” said sailmaster Robert Hague, who is the group leader of all 145 Scouts. “So, they decided to ask permission to use the local Aboriginal word for a bark canoe.” On Sunday, May 19, the Scouts will be joined by members of the Boon Wurrung Foundation for the official naming of the Scout “boat” deck as SSS Gurrong. “The Boon Wurrung people have lived and played along the shores of Hobsons Bay for thousands of years and the Williamstown

Sea Scouts wanted to celebrate this living culture and bring the two communities closer together,” Mr Hague said. The cultural day runs from 11am-2pm and kicks off with a bush food-inspired barbecue followed by a smoking ceremony. There will be tours of the 1920s boatshed and 1940s Scout hall, located on the Strand (opposite Stevedore Street). Details: https://www.4thwilliamstown.net/ Goya Dmytryshchak

Plot leader jailed for seven years By Adam Cooper, The Age The ringleader of an ill-fated plot to sail from northern Queensland to the Philippines to encourage people there to overthrow the government in the name of sharia law has been jailed for seven years. West Footscray man Robert Cerantonio orchestrated a plan for a group of Melbourne men to tow a seven-metre boat more than 2400 kilometres north, from where they planned to sail to the southern Philippines. Cerantonio and four other men were arrested

by police in Laura, north of Cairns, on May 10, 2016. A sixth man was arrested in Melbourne a fortnight later. The group’s intention was to get Cerantonio – known as “Musa” – to the Philippines so he could urge others, including some affiliated with terror groups, to engage in violence and fight to overthrow the government. Cerantonio, a one-time junior footballer who grew up in a Catholic family, was a wunderkind of modern Islam after converting at age 17, but became radicalised while living in the Philippines.

The Supreme Court heard he was deported to Australia in 2014 for spreading violent extremist propaganda in lectures and online. Stripped of his Australian passport but wanting to live under sharia law, he and five friends – Shayden Thorne, Paul James Dacre, Antonino Alfio Granata and brothers Kadir and Murat Kaya – devised a plan between October 2015 and May 2016 to obtain a boat and sail to the Philippines. Justice Michael Croucher last Friday said the plot was “poorly planned and foredoomed to fail”.

The men pled guilty to engaging in conduct in preparation for incursion into a foreign country for the purpose of engaging in hostile activity, an offence that carries a maximum penalty of life in jail. The five other men were previously jailed for between three and four years, but Justice Croucher said Cerantonio’s offending was more serious given the others looked to him for leadership and spiritual guidance. Now 35, Cerantonio must serve five years and three months before he is eligible for parole. He has served almost three years since his arrest.

Day of celebration Aboriginal queer performer Jessie Lloyd will be among the guests at Hobsons Bay council’s annual ceremony for IDAHOBIT – International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia. Lloyd, from St Albans, said the day held special meaning for her. “I have a personal interest in this event,” she said. “I will be inviting some of my family to come along because we’ve recently had a new member of our family who’s intersex, this is quite a new thing for my family, especially the older generation. “So, I’m going to take the opportunity to invite them along to this event to raise awareness and learn more information about, not only the intersex, but the LGBTIQA community. “My family’s quite conservative and they’re Christian people so we’re really taking the

opportunity to create awareness within our family. “It’s just a coincidence that they’re all coming down from Queensland and the Northern Territory for a party – they just don’t have these conversations up there.” Hobsons Bay councillor Tony Briffa, who was the world’s first intersex mayor, said everyone was welcome to the council’s event held outside the civic centre. “This year’s event is really exciting, led by proud Aboriginal queer performer Jessie Lloyd, followed by guest speaker Bobuq Sayed speaking about challenges still faced by the LGBTIQA+ community,” Cr Briffa said. “As always, the day will include the raising of the Pride flag.” At the Hobsons Bay Civic Centre, 115 Civic Parade, Altona, from 11am-noon on May 17. Grieve Parade truck bid backed By Goya Dmytryshchak

Notes of nostalgia One of Australia’s original cabaret stars with more than 50 years in showbiz is coming to Williamstown for a night of nostalgia. Off the back of the national The Go Show Tour with the rock stars of the ’60s and ’70s, Issi Dye is performing an intimate show in the waterfront clubhouse of the Williamstown Maritime Association. “I’m looking forward to bringing my own personal Issi Dye original ’60s and ’70s show to the Pirates Tavern down at Williamstown,” he said. “For people who are reminiscing and remember the things that I did, the TV programs of the ’60s, ’70s and ’80s and the shows I did, it’s just a way of coming down and doing a bit of nostalgia. “I’ll be singing songs that I recorded, including my hit songs called One Last Kiss and Personality and many other songs. “Plus, of course, I’ll be telling stories about my career.” He will also be performing the songs of other artists from that era, including two of his favourites, Johnny O’Keefe and Bobby Darin. The original Issi Dye 60s and 70s Show is on Friday, May 17 from 8pm at Pirates Tavern, rear of 82 Nelson Place, Williamstown. Tickets $20/$15 members. Bookings: 0402 702 734

Hobsons Bay council is campaigning for Grieve Parade to be made a preferred truck route in the lead-up to the federal election. The council wants Grieve Parade extended north of the Princes Highway, via Jones Road, through to Market Road at Brooklyn. It says this would reduce the number of trucks using Millers Road. The future West Gate Tunnel toll road and introduction of truck bans north of the West Gate Freeway is expected to result in 4500 more trucks a day on Millers Road between Geelong Road and the freeway. Hobsons Bay mayor Jonathon Marsden said the council also wanted freeway access ramps at Dohertys Road, west of Grieve Parade, and the development of a regional freight management plan. “Throughout the life of the West Gate Tunnel project, council has always advocated for Grieve Parade to be the preferred truck route and we continue to advocate this position to relevant authorities across a range of platforms,” he said. “In the lead-up to the federal election, council is sending off letters to all candidates asking them to consider the needs of the Hobsons Bay community.” Better West spokeswoman Rosa McKenna said residents backed the council’s campaign. “We applaud council’s advocacy to get federal funding to make this a reality and relieve dependency on Millers Road.” Don’t Destroy Millers Road spokesman Chris Dunlevy said it was a “no brainer”. “Grieve Parade is a much smarter route, but it must go all the way through to Market Road or the problems will just shift to Geelong Road,” he said. “This link is vital … Millers Road is already at bursting point.”

‘Sky is not the limit’ in Seddon By Benjamin Millar Maribyrnong councillors have joined Seddon residents in slamming plans to build more than 400 dwellings holding up to 1000 people on the former Transdev bus depot site. The 1.4-hectare site at 43-57 Buckley Street was sold in 2015 for a suburb record of $20.9 million. ANPLUS Developments last year lodged plans seeking approval to build 407 apartments and 15 townhouses across three buildings up to 12 storeys high – double the site’s maximum preferred height.

Councillors at last week’s city development meeting voted to refuse the application on grounds including its height, bulk and failure to appropriately respond to the site. Neighbouring residents had earlier criticised the likely impact on parking, traffic and the area’s neighbourhood feel. Footscray Historical Society’s Carmel Taig said the site had previously been flagged as the site of a public park and plaza and its potential heritage value was being overlooked. Resident Charles Hardman said Maribyrnong council had done “all of the right things” in preparing planning guidelines for

the area and they should be adhered to in any proposal for the site. Cr Mia McGregor said the council had spent years consulting with the community and deciding what was wanted for the area. “What was decided was we wanted a maximum of six stories for this area, so I had to think someone was taking the p... when they asked for 12,” she said. “They wanted to double our maximum height? I have remained speechless throughout this process.” Cr Megan Bridger-Darling also slammed the “intolerable” proposal.

“I was absolutely offended that we would consider trading away the height requirements,” she said. “The sky is not the limit, six storeys is.” Cr Sarah Carter said it was one of the worst planning applications she had seen in 10 years as a councillor. ANPLUS Developments earlier this year lodged an application for review at the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal after Maribyrnong council failed to makes its decision within the prescribed time. A compulsory conference mediation will be held on June 11 ahead of a full hearing from August 5.

Setting new goals The goal was simple – to create a sense of worth and belonging in the lives of the young participants. The Western Bulldogs Community Foundation’s GOAL program has been running weekly sessions with AFL and AFLW players and community leaders mentoring young people aged 14 to 18 years old of African background. Community engagement co-ordinator Kim Kelsey said about 30 students have been taking part in the 12-week program, recruited from across the west. “Some of the students were recommended by teachers, but we wanted to keep it a genuine thing that they wanted to attend,” she said. Aimed at supporting the community to improve engagement, employment and training outcomes, the GOAL program was borne from the Club’s African Action Plan

in response to the panic around an ‘African gang crisis’ and the impact this has had on the community. It offers help with networking, communication skills as well as personal planning and goal setting. “They have been particularly interested in the employment opportunity aspect of things,” Ms Kelsey said. Alternating between Whitten Oval and Melton Secondary College, the sessions aim to break down barriers and involve a series of hands-on group activities and workshops as well as more intensive one-on-one mentoring. Bulldogs AFL players involved in the program include Josh Dunkley, Jason Johannisen, Lin Jong, Buku Khamis, Tom Liberatore, Dale Morris and Billy Gowers. Benjamin Millar

MY PLACE Long-time Newport resident Ted Peck speaks with Goya Dmytryshchak.

We moved here in 1964 – to Newport – and we’ve lived in the same house in the same street ever since. All our kids have grown up here and two of them still live in Hobsons Bay, which is a good plug for Hobsons Bay – it’s a good spot to live. I’m involved with the Hobsons Bay Arts Society, St Stephen’s Uniting Church and op shop. Tennis too – we play that at St Stephen’s. And I’m a member of the Kororoit Creek Angling Club – they’re a good bunch of guys down there. What do you like about Newport? It’s just a very friendly, family-oriented area because there’s lots of kids around our way and a few old people like us. It’s a good, balanced community, actually, of young ones and old ones. What don’t you like? Look, I’m really pretty happy with the way it is. I think we’ve got lovely foreshores all around Newport and Willy and along the banks of the Yarra there there’s some beautiful bike tracks. I love the bike tracks, I do a lot of riding around there, they’re good fun. I guess the only thing that might be handy is, maybe, some shelter over some of the seats for summertime. It gets a bit hot if you sit down there doing a bit of drawing. But apart from that, I think it’s a great spot or I think we probably would have moved on if it wasn’t.

Can you tell me bit about Kororoit Creek Historic Fishing Village? The historic fishing village is a very interesting spot. One of my friends and myself acquired a shed down there about eight years ago. It’s a lovely spot just to spend a bit of time. We’ve got a couple of little rowboats there that we go rowing with the grandkids and it’s a beautiful spot to draw and paint and hang about and just watch the birds. It’s a lovely spot. Just so much birdlife down there, it’s incredible. Do you have a favourite restaurant or cafe? I do have a favourite cafe and that’s at Altona – well, there’s two actually: Pier 71 and Numero Uno. Both of those, with our drawing group, we frequent them when it’s not suitable to draw outside and they’re most accommodating to put up with us while we draw in there for a couple of hours. They’re very friendly and welcoming. What are some of the changes you’ve seen in Hobsons Bay? It’s become very gentrified. When we came down here it was really a working class area. There was just that much employment around with the dockyards and the power station and the ports and harbours and the woollen mills. All those places have gone, which I’m a little bit sad about because I think it’s nice to have a bit of employment close to where you live. It’s past my working time but I do feel a bit sorry for people who have got to drive miles now to get a job.

(Damjan Janevski)

FOOD REVIEW

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir reconsiders a local favourite A regular sight that bemuses us when we’re seeking a feed in Flemington is people queuing up for a table at Laksa King. Good luck to them, but the CTS ethos usually leads us to going where the crowds aren’t. In Flemington and for Malaysian, that invariably means M Yong Tufu, but we are happy and keen to check out the new Laksa King family establishment – Laksa King Kitchen on Racecourse Road. The new Laksa King Kitchen boasts a chic-but-small dining area, though there is more seating upstairs. The staff are keen, happy and all a-bustle. The menu is a solid gathering of Malaysian staples divided into small/big bites, noodles, rice dishes, laksas and vegetarian. There is a nifty twist – laksas are offered in two sizes. This makes good sense, as regular laksas are always a big meal. Not that we can envisage a day when we would order the smaller size! Selections can be ascertained using the printed menu or on the laptop at each table, but the actual ordering is done via the latter. Bennie and I share a starter and have a bigger dish each. Lobak ($8.60) is less on flavour and crinkly beancurd than we would like, but it’s a fine beginning that delivers us three porky chunks. In a fine break with boring CTS practice, it is Bennie who orders a laksa – in this case, the bigger version of the angus beef outing ($13.50). It’s a big and handsome bowl-full but he is

Laksa king kitchen address: 328 Racecourse Road, Flemington so-so about the laksa as a whole – perhaps a higher spice level may have won him over? He does give, however, an enthusiastic 10/10 for the many tender beef chunks. And I get to try one of the eggplant pieces – it is wonderfully luscious and memorable. But still … That leaves me ordering the Hainan chicken rice ($13.50). The photos of the dish didn’t really inspire and that unease increases when I realise my rice meal will be eaten without the usual bowl of chicken soup on the side. But all is forgiven from the first mouthful of perfectly ginger-perfumed rice and onwards. This is a triumph and one of the best of this personal favourite I’ve had for a long time. There’s a lot of chook and it’s tender and expertly boned. The ginger mash, chilli sauce and soy accompaniments are excellent and in generous quantities and the wilted bean sprout/veg offering is likewise top notch. My mouth is doing a high-stepping boogie as we depart. Kenny Weir is the founder of Consider the Sauce, the definitive guide to eating in Melbourne’s western suburbs – www.considerthesauce.net

The embodiment of the “nice things come in small packages” adage, this single-fronted Edwardian and its block of nearly 250 square metres have been treated beautifully – not just in terms of space maximisation but also the overall aesthetic. Beyond its charm-filled façade, the house retains beautiful cornicing on high ceilings, deep skirts and a fireplace to keep the Edwardian flag flying, but all else focuses on the look of today. And the location? Mighty fine: Greenwich

Reserve and The Strand waterfront are a five-minute amble away; Westbourne Grammar is within a two-minute zip in the car; and restaurants and shops are also in the neighbourhood. The top storey of the house is entirely dedicated to the grey-carpeted main bedroom, which is under a plaster vaulted ceiling and has white plantation shutters on windows. The walk-in robe is roomy, while the spacious en suite has a tub to soak away cares, along with raised bowl-basins atop a storage-rich vanity.

As well as a study – which could take the role of a fourth bedroom – there are two fitted bedrooms downstairs, one with a fireplace. They share a modern bathroom with a bowl-basin atop a grey-laminate vanity. The expansive living hub at the rear is a wonderfully light-filled space, courtesy of a clerestory window and an angled wall of glass that includes bifold doors to a deck. The floaty white sheers dressing the glass emphasise the airy feel, as does the high ceiling with stepped cornices.

16 Lyons Street, Williamstown Adding contemporary proportions to the classical persona of this substantial double fronted Victorian will produce a property rich in rewards - from lifestyle perspectives and from a long term investment point of view. The current floor-plan, still entirely liveable, features four bedrooms , a traditional lounge, central living room, a separate kitchen/meals area and study/retreat that ensures family flexibility while the bathroom and its large adjacent laundry reflect a clear readiness for renovation, STCA. To the rear, the garden’s work-shop/shed highlights the depth of an allotment that only complements and confirms the huge potential offered by this exceptional address walking distance from Williamstown Primary School, Douglas Parade, Nelson Place and the water. What a wonderful opportunity!

SPORT Eagles inflict a thumping, close in on top four Yarraville Seddon is knocking on the door of the Western Region Football League division 2 top four after a 95-point smashing of West Footscray at the Yarraville Oval on Saturday. Boom recruit Andrejs Everitt showed off his quality with six goals as the Eagles led at every change en route to a runaway victory. Jack Collins, Josh Crofton and Matthew Taylor were the standouts for the Eagles, while Jesse Varsamakis and James Backway kicked three goals apiece. The Eagles are 2-2 and one win outside the top four. It was a tough day for West Footscray, which remains winless and on the bottom of the ladder. Darcy McCallum and Tobi Bray were the Roosters’ only multiple goalkickers with two apiece.

Yarraville Seddon will host Parkside on Saturday, while West Footscray will be out to break its duck when it entertains Manor Lakes. There is an upbeat feeling at Newport after

its 20-point road win over Manor Lakes. The Porters have won three of their opening four matches to sit in the top four. A 31-to-zip opening quarter set up Newport’s victory. Bill El Souki led the way for the Porters with three goals, while Youssef El Hawli added two. Parkside had a brutal 81-point loss to Wyndhamvale at Henry Turner Reserve. It was the Magpies’ first loss of the season. North Footscray went down in a thriller by three points to Point Cook Centrals. The Devils, who have just one win from four outings, coughed up an eight-point three-quarter time lead. In division 1, Altona shocked the west with the merciless manner in which it dismantled six-time defending premier Deer Park. The fourth-placed Vikings ran riot to record a 68-point win at Grant Reserve.

Altona will get the chance to make it three wins in a row when it visits newly promoted Point Cook on Saturday. Elliot Cavallaro had a day out for the Vikings with five goals, while Kevin Johnson, Mitch Norton and Kelly Pickard were in the Vikings’ best. Spotswood took down Hoppers Crossing on its own turf by 22 points. Charlie Nastasi was brilliant for the Woodsmen with five goals. The Woodsmen are well placed in second spot ahead of a blockbuster date with Werribee Districts at McLean Reserve on Saturday. In division 3, Braybrook had a heartbreaking seven-point loss to Sunshine Heights, while Laverton was no match for Albanvale in a 47-point defeat. Lance Jenkinson

Falcons switch it up to hold winning run

Depth is the difference By Lance Jenkinson Williamstown CYMS has cleared all the obstacles put in its way to start a perfect 4-0 in the Victorian Amateur Football Association Premier C. The CYs are yet to field a full team due to injuries and player unavailability, but their depth has shone through. “We’ve had our early challenges,” CYs coach Mathew Montebello said. “With some of the talent that we’ve had out, our second tier of players have really stepped up and grown. “That’s what makes me happiest, that we’ve seen growth from our second tier group of players.” Williamstown CYMS showed its ability to rise through adversity in a 99-point win over PEGS in the top-versus-bottom clash at Fearon Reserve on Saturday. The CYs were a man down early in the contest when Lachlan Fairley suffered concussion, but it did not act as a distraction as they powered to a commanding win. “He copped a head knock, so he went off with concussion halfway through the first quarter,” 46 MARIBYRNONG & HOBSONS BAY STAR WEEKLY \ MAY 8, 2019

Montebello said. “He’s been a massive pick-up for us as a former Willy kid. “For him to go off and [Ben] Deller was a bit quieter after some great weeks, to see the other guys pick up that slack was really promising.” Williamstown CYMS trailed by five points at quarter-time, but was dominant for the final three quarters. The CYs piled on an incredible 17 goals to one after quarter-time. Joel Hogarth had a field day for CYs across half-back. Hogarth was like a blur most of the day as he transferred the ball from defence to attack in the blink of an eye. He capped a best-on-ground display with two goals. “Joel’s a former 800 metre junior champion and ran at the world junior championships when he was a teenager,” Montebello said. “He’s a running machine.” Mitch Parkinson was superb for Williamstown CYMS with three goals. Parkinson is looking rejuvenated after a year out of the game to focus on study. “He’s come back really hungry as a

mid-forward who can kick a lot of goals,” Montebello said. “He was the league’s leading goalkicker in the under 19s. “This year his brother [Blake] has come up from the under 19s as well, so him playing with him really excites him and he’s really motivated and doing a really good job.” Williamstown CYMS had 10 goalkickers, including six players with multiples. Dean Cutajar kicked three for the second time in two games. “We always prefer to have a spread of players who have kicked two goals each as opposed to one who has kicked six, so it was good to see that happen,” Montebello said. The CYs know their lofty position will put them under the microscope. “It doesn’t matter where a team is on the ladder or how many they’ve won, they’re always going to come at us and Ajax will be no different next weekend,” Montebello said. Williamstown CYMS’ clash with the 1-3 Ajax will be at Gary Smorgon Oval on Saturday. The CYs are expecting a tough encounter against a side that was relegated from Premier B last season.

City West Falcons are proving there is more than one way to skin a cat in the Victorian Netball League championship division. Despite the disruption to the starting line-up caused by the beginning of the Australian Netball League competition, which involves a number of their stars stepping up to the next level, the Falcons just keep on winning. The Falcons remain the hottest team in the competition, improving to 6-0 and a game clear on top with a comfortable 65-49 win over the Southern Saints at the State Netball and Hockey Centre on Wednesday night. Falcons coach Marg Lind has thrown her line-ups around with good effect. “Sometimes right up to the death knock, we don’t know who we’ve got playing,” she said. “They [ANL teams] dictate to you how much load the players can take.” Star goal shooter Jane Cook is unavailable for City West indefinitely as she continues her stint with Tasmania in the ANL. It has opened up a spot for Tharjini Sivalingam, who impressed with 62-from-65 attempts for a return of 96 per cent. Centre Molly Jovic’s connection to the Collingwood Magpies put her on a minute’s restriction against the Saints, so she was taken out of the game in the second half. Soli Ropati switched from wing defence to centre to cover Jovic and not only filled her shoes admirably, but had a huge influence in City West turning a one-goal half-time lead into a 16-goal battering. “Soli just played at a different pace, which is what they weren’t prepared for,” Lind said. Anger Akec performed strongly at wing defence when Ropati moved to centre, while Imogen Sexton relished her time in defence. It has been a long road to the VNL’s top flight for Sexton, who endured two ACL injuries in back-to-back seasons. City West’s next test will be against Boroondara Express at the State Netball and Hockey Centre on Wednesday night at 9.40pm. Lance Jenkinson

Favour swings Gators’ way as teamwork takes hold The tide is starting to turn for Altona Gators in the Big V basketball men’s division 2. The Gators have won three of their past five matches and are beginning to look a lot more like a team unit rather than a mishmash of different parts. “We definitely think we’ve turned the corner,” Gators coach Des Radoslovic said. “We’re integrating the new players into the team. “We’ve been trying to find the right recipe and trying to tweak things here and there.” Altona started the season with four straight losses. The Gators went into the last quarter in all of those still in with a chance of victory, so they were not too far off. Their results have improved markedly in recent weeks. An 88-72 win over the Sherbrooke Suns was probably the best team performance of the season. “It was the overall engagement and chemistry from the entire group for the full four quarters that made the difference,” Radoslovic said.

“There was a big emphasis on getting everybody involved and having everybody engaged in the contest. “Even the guys on the bench were engaged in the game at all times.” Radoslovic has been searching for the winning formula, mixing and matching his line-ups. He found a formula that worked in the 16-point win over Sherbrooke, making the bold move of sending Jovan Bojanic to the bench to play with the second unit. It freed up Bojanic to play a bit more aggressively and it gave Joey Mausar an important ally. They both led the team in plus-minus. “I decided to have those guys come in with the bench unit to give them more freedom and a longer leash to play their natural games,” Radoslovic said. “I would do it again because it worked.” Bojanic finished with 16 points and five rebounds, while Mausar led Altona in scoring with 25 points to go with three assists and three steals.

It was Mausar’s best game since returning from the street ball circuit. “He is a legend around the Melbourne street ball competitions,” Radoslovic said. “He was adjusting to getting back and playing in a more structured form of basketball.” Nate Coory was the pick of the Altona starting five. He finished with 20 points, six rebounds and three assists, but he too spent time on court with Mausar, who ran the point and freed up his role in the team. “Even though Nate’s young, he’s running the whole team, so he’s got the ball in his hands the whole time,” Radoslovic said. “Generally he has to create all of his own scores, he has to beat his man, he has to come off the screen, very rarely does he get the chance to space the floor while someone else is creating for a catch and shoot.” Altona has improved to 3-6 on the season. The Gators will go in search of an upset when they travel to play the fifth-placed Pakenham Warriors (6-2) on Saturday night. Lance Jenkinson

Footscray has copped an 8-3 hiding from Doncaster in the Hockey Victoria men’s premier league. The Bulldogs had no answer to the offensive might of the home side at Doncaster Regional Hockey Centre. Altona needed only a single goal to beat KBH Brumbies 1-0 at the Altona Hockey Ground. The goal was scored by Cooper Burns in the second half. In women’s premier league, Footscray had a nail-biting 1-0 win over Doncaster, courtesy of a goal to Olivia Colasurdo. Altona played out a 2-2 draw with KBH Brumbies. Jessica Brennan scored both Altona goals.

Hoppers Crossing’s Matthew Scott, top, and Altona East Phoenix’s Tamir Loris tangle on Saturday. (Luke Hemer)

Tide turns for Phoenix By Lance Jenkinson The excruciating wait is over for Altona East Phoenix. The Phoenix snapped a five-game losing streak in Football Victoria men’s state league 2 north-west with a convincing 2-1 win over Hoppers Crossing at Paisley Park on Saturday. A source of frustration for Phoenix coach Davide Piccione was that his team’s strong performances in recent weeks had not resulted in a single victory. The Phoenix’s previous three matches ended in narrow one-goal losses. Picone lamented the luck that had eluded them in the start of the campaign. “Our team has been unlucky in the last few games,” he said. “It’s a good team … but for some reason, we hadn’t won a game and I’m not sure why. “We didn’t get the points until today. Soccer works like this sometimes. “With this win, the boys will hopefully get a bit more luck.”

The inclusion of captain George Noulas was huge for Altona East. Noulas is a rock solid defender and his leadership is invaluable. His return game was one to cherish. “You can feel his presence on the pitch,” Picone said. “He’s the captain, he’s a good player and when you’re missing one good player on the backline, it’s always hard to fill.” Altona East hit the lead from the penalty spot through Festim Elmazi. The Phoenix’s lead doubled when substitute Tomoki Shiboya found the back of the net. Goalkeeper George Iatrou pulled off a brilliant save from a free kick, but later could not stop Hoppers Crossing stalwart Alister Smart from pegging a goal back, leaving the Phoenix under late pressure. With Alessandro Verratti dominating in the midfield and Fernando Perez Rojas forming a steady partnership with Noulas, the Phoenix found a way to secure all three points and move off the bottom of the ladder.

Verratti was praised for his tireless work. “He was like a machine, up and down the pitch,” Picone said. “Defending and attacking no problem.” Altona East will pay a visit to seventh-placed Albion Rovers on Saturday. In state league 1, Altona City came from behind to beat Caroline Springs George Cross 3-1 at Kim Reserve. Conor Rafferty was the star for City with two goals, while Callum Byrne scored the other. City is sitting in second place on the ladder, just one point behind Preston Lions. Yarraville Glory played out a 0-0 draw with Banyule City. The Glory remains in second-last spot on the ladder. In state league 3, Alex Vlassis scored a double in Williamstown’s 4-0 win over Westvale at JT Gray Reserve. The Blues have moved up to sixth on the ladder. The women’s state leagues took the week off for cup action.

Spotswood showed off both its attacking flair and defensive might in a 253-point annihilation of Wyndhamvale in WRFL Women’s. Not only did the Wolves kick 37 goals from 68 scoring shots, but also they held the Falcons scoreless. Gilda Incigneri kicked 10 goals for Spotswood, while Caitlin Brennan added eight. The Wolves are on top of the ladder by percentage. In other games, West Footscray claimed a 26-point win over Yarraville Seddon and Laverton went down by 24 points to Point Cook.

Cricket

Yarraville Club has lured one of the biggest fish on local cricket’s transfer market. Star all-rounder Trent Lawford has signed on to captain the Clubbers in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association senior division. Lawford has been brought in following a stint with Fitzroy Doncaster in Premier Cricket, but also has Sheffield Shield and Big Bash experience.

Rugby league

Altona Roosters are celebrating their first win of the NRL Victoria women’s first-grade season. The Roosters came away with an 18-6 win over Casey-Eastern at Colchester Reserve on Saturday. Club president Brandon Taunoa is coaching the Roosters’ women this season.
