Honour to remember By Goya Dmytryshchak At 95, Williamstown’s Pauline Priestly is among the last survivors of her generation to have served in World War 2. The Altona RSL member enlisted as soon as she turned 18. Her father had been in the Royal Flying Corps and her older brothers had already left for the war. “My eldest brother was a flyer in the Second World War – all the brothers in my family are colour blind so he couldn’t be a pilot, so he was actually an observer,” Ms Priestly said. “He was flying Lancasters but he was shot down over Europe somewhere … his body washed up on the shores of Amsterdam. “My second brother, he was flying in the Pacific.

“Then, when my turn came, when I was 18, I wanted to join the Army. “Women didn’t carry arms so they were either in administration, they were sometimes on ‘ack ack’ – machine guns. They called them ack acks because of the noise they make.” Her skills as a stenographer won her a job in a logistics unit called Movement Control as a transport officer in Adelaide and later Darwin. “It was the unit responsible for doing the timetables of all the trains and buses and directing which troops were to go where and which trucks were to go there,” Ms Priestly said. “In 1942, the Japanese had just come into the war and they needed women in administration to take the place of the men, so the men could go and fight in New Guinea. “When the Japanese came into the war, they didn’t say anything about it down south because they thought they might frighten people. “Over 12 months, the whole of northern Australia was bombed from Townsville to Broome.” Ms Priestly said it was hard to define what Anzac Day meant to Australians. “These days, people think just as much about the Turkish people – that their country was invaded – which they didn’t in my day,” she said. On Anzac Day she will join contemporary

In 1999, violence erupted when the fledgling democracy chose independence from Indonesia and a UN-authorised force including Australia was deployed to restore peace. “It was nine months. “They got their independence and there were a lot of people against that independence … so there was a lot of unrest. “The Indonesians were causing a lot of the problems. They’d taken their uniforms off them and were infiltrating and doing a whole lot of bad things.” The Altona RSL member said Anzac Day was for “catching up with mates”.
“From ’99 onwards, everything’s changed everywhere. Whether it’s peacekeeping or Afghanistan or Iraq, it’s been busy everywhere. “It’s hard to understand a lot of conflicts. “We’ve got this guy, Hank, who just walked in off the street. He’s an artist. He’s been painting the guys that have been killed in Afghanistan. The venue’s just filling up now with the portraits of the guys.”

A celebration of Aussie war nurses April 25th 2019
Ever since the first nurses sailed for the Boer War in 1900, Australian nurses have served in theatres of war and conflict around the world. They have worked in hazardous conditions, endured extreme discomfort, and sometimes lost their lives. Forty-three nurses served as part of the Australian Army’s involvement in Vietnam between 1966 and 1972. Service nurses were also involved in the evacuation of casualties back to Australia. Terrie Ross was one of the first four army nurses to be deployed to Vietnam. “I worked then with a darling old nurse called Nora Marmont,” she says. “I knew she’d worked on a hospital train in Japan during the Korean War. “One day Marmie said to me: ‘Young Terrie, you have to leave; if you don’t, you’ll end up here with five babies and you’ll have been nowhere and seen nothing. Go join the army’, she said. And so I did.” It was May 1965 and Lieutenant Terrie Ross headed off to join the staff of the No.2 Military Hospital at Ingleburn, just outside Sydney.
“conditions weren’t great and the boys were so young” In Vietnam, things were just starting to get ‘interesting’. The US had committed 200,000 troops to the conflict; the Australian government was just about to deploy the 1st Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment; and the first National Service conscription ballot had just been drawn. By August 1966, after the Battle of Long Tan, one of Australia’s heaviest actions of the war, the need for expanded medical facilities became obvious. With just a few weeks to prepare, and sworn to secrecy, young Terrie Ross was deployed to the 8th Field Ambulance unit in Vung Tau. Terrie has plenty of fond memories of her time in Vietnam. “Don’t get me wrong, it was hard work. We’d work 10-hour shifts, six days a week, the conditions weren’t great and the boys were so young, and some of the things you’d see…” she says. “But it was exciting, and we learnt so much. There wasn’t much chance to look after patients with malaria or bomb injuries or shrapnel wounds back in the wards at home.” She remembers one patient who’d been hit by direct rocket fire during the Battle of Suoi Chau Pha. Six Australians had been killed and another 20 wounded. She was on duty in the intensive care unit when he was wheeled in after several hours of emergency surgery. “He was so sick,” she says, “I was trying to keep him comfortable and get him off to sleep, but he was worried he would never wake up if he did. But he said he would go to sleep if I stayed with him. “I did have a date that night,” she laughs, remembering it now. “But I said, ‘You’re on’, and I sat with him for hours and when he woke up he knew he’d be OK.”

Resident blasts park hoons By Esther Lauaki A resident fears that illegal “hoon” activity by bikers through Truganina Park could result in someone being killed or badly injured. The Altona Meadows man, who asked not to be named, said constant traffic of motorbikes, trail bikes and petrol engine-powered bicycles around the Bay Trail and Thousand Steps was getting out of control. “Truganina Park is the epicentre of the activity,” he told Star Weekly. “The Bay Trail and Truganina Park area is
used by many families, elderly people and young children. “On a daily basis, a procession of motorbikes use the trail illegally at high speeds. “The trail bikes go to the Thousand Steps hill and the back of Truganina Park … and do jumps from the top. “One of the walk bridges was badly damaged by what looks to have been a very heavy vehicle.” Westgate Highway Patrol had been tackling the hooning on dirt and trail bikes in the area about 20 years ago when Wyndham was still considered to be a rural area, but the problem
resurfaced in some parts of the municipality in recent years. In 2017, Wyndham police purchased two trail bikes to increase patrols of public reserves following increasing complaints from residents. The Gaskell Court resident is calling for fencing to prevent access to sensitive bush areas including the Cheetham Wetlands. He said that bad behaviour at the park, jointly managed by Hobsons Bay council and Parks Victoria, had escalated to violent run-ins. “Last July, three youths assaulted my teenage
son while he was out riding his bicycle and he was nearly stabbed by them,” he said. “Our neighbour, a young mother, has also been terrorised by teenagers. “When we call the police they ask me to log a call to the hoon hotline, but this has not resulted in any actions to stop these activities. “We would like to see a co-ordinated approach between Parks Victoria … council and related authorities to … address this issue before someone is seriously injured.” Hobsons Bay council and Parks Victoria were contacted for comment.
Identity theft a growing threat Police have warned residents about “a significant increase” in mail theft across Wyndham, Hobsons Bay and Maribyrnong. Acting Inspector Aaron Riches said police had noticed an increase in this type of offending in the past fortnight. “The items these thieves are generally targeting are mail that contains people’s drivers licences, utility accounts, credit card transactions and bank statements,” he said. “These items are then used by criminals to assume an identify and then defraud victims.” Acting Inspector Aaron Riches said police were intent on cracking down on mail theft. “We take this type of offending seriously and recognise the emotional toll it can take on an individual when their identity is stolen,” he said. He said that on March 25, Wyndham police arrested two males in relation to mail theft. They are expected to be charged. Acting Inspector Riches encouraged the community to take simple steps to ensure they aren’t the victim of mail theft including: • Consider purchasing a locked mailbox or fitting a lock to your mailbox. • Emptying your mailbox frequently. • Having mail held at the post office, or collected by a friend, when away. • Disposing of unwanted mail carefully and shredding documents with personal details. • Making sure your mailbox is large enough for the mail to be dropped into a secure section. Anyone who has information on mail theft cancontact their local police station or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
Cheers to 105 years!

Albania-born Altona North woman Letfije Memishi was 105 on April 16. Mrs Memishi was born in a small farming village and came to Australia in 1964. She lost her husband Feta in 1946 after the turmoil of WWII and raised their three children with support from her close family. Up until a few years ago, she lived with her eldest son in Seddon and helped to raise her grandchildren before moving to Marina TLC Aged Care. Mrs Memishi attributed her longevity to her beliefs and prayer, healthy eating, keeping busy and, most importantly, family love and care. Council’s station call
Maribyrnong’s poll wish list
By Goya Dmytryshchak Hobsons Bay council is calling for a new train station at Altona North to service 4500 dwellings being built on its northern border with Maribyrnong, in the lead-up to the May federal election. The former Don Smallgoods site at Altona North, known as Precinct 15, is to be developed into 3000 dwellings for about 7000 people. A master plan for the Bradmill site, on the northern side of the West Gate Freeway at Yarraville, allows for 1500 dwellings. Hobsons Bay mayor Jonathon Marsden said the council was calling for the Melbourne Metro 2 train line to have an additional link from Newport to Sunshine. “Our ask also includes a new station in Altona North to cater for the growing community within the Altona North development site, Bradmill development and the Brooklyn business park,” he said. “The new communities that are likely to arise in Precinct 15, and Bradmill across the freeway in Yarraville, could comprise many thousands of households and currently they have almost no transport options. “Part of our Melbourne Metro 2 ask is that once it comes out at Newport from Fishermans Bend, then it runs up the goods line to Sunshine, which is the intersection of the West Gate Freeway where Precinct 15 is.” The council is also calling for Grieve Parade to be upgraded as a preferred truck route as part of the West Gate Tunnel project. “An unwanted consequence of the campaign to have truck bans along Francis and the other streets in Maribyrnong was that it shifted the burden over to our side,” Cr Marsden said. “We feel that instead of sending them down Millers Road, which is a mixture of
Maribyrnong council is using the federal election to push for a $100 million cash injection into local projects. The $102.5 million wish list of “advocacy priorities” includes a slew of projects to replace ageing infrastructure and improve transport connections. The council is seeking $20 million to upgrade Maribyrnong Aquatic Centre and $20 million for designing and developing an integrated transport plan incorporating the airport rail link and Maribyrnong Defence Site. Other big ticket wish list items include $15 million towards rebuilding the West Footscray RecWest site, $11 million for a new indoor multi-purpose sports facility and $10 million towards redeveloping and renovating Footscray town hall. The council wants the federal government to match $6 million from the state government for the implementation of the Maribyrnong River Master Plan. A push for better cycling infrastructure includes a request for $6 million towards Copenhagen-style bike lanes along Somerville Road and connections from Hopkins Street to Dynon Road and Napier Street to Footscray Road. Council is seeking a further $4 million to complete detailed design for the proposed Footscray Library, Performing Arts and Culture Precinct and $4 million towards the building of a Vietnamese Heritage and Culture Centre in central Footscray.

rather than sending them down places like Millers Road that is going to affect people’s health.” The council wants Grieve Parade extended north via Jones Road through to Market Road and the development of a regional freight management plan.

Feature film in focus A feature film set in Macedon will enjoy its Australian big screen debut when the sixth annual Setting Sun Film Festival takes over the Sun Theatre in Yarraville in early May. Audiences will be treated to the local premiere of About An Age, a coming of age feature length film directed by Footscray locals Evan J Martin and Harley Hefford, which won the Best Ensemble Cast award at last year’s Orlando Film Festival. This year’s festival will feature a record number of films across a packed program featuring drama, comedy, horror, documentaries, experimental and animations. Festival director Anna Bourozikas said there would be something for everyone among more than 100 films to be screened over five
days. Stories range from an award-winning claymation about a pesky hipster to a man that makes a hologram of the perfect woman that no one can touch. Although proudly based in Melbourne’s west, the festival will this year feature dozens of short films from America, the Middle East, South Africa, Korea, Cuba and Canada. Filmmakers are in the running for more than $10,000 in cash and prizes in a range of award categories, including new awards for Indigenous filmmakers and creators of online series. The Setting Sun Film Festival is from May 2-6. Details: www.settingsun.com.au Benjamin Millar

Truck fears addressed
Locals fed up with works
By Goya Dmytryshchak A Spotswood glass manufacturer has moved to quell resident anger by assuring them the company has no plans to increase truck traffic along Hudsons Road. O-I Operations has applied to Hobsons Bay council to build two warehouses with five access points, including two new ones on Hudsons Road. O-I is exempt from the truck ban to be introduced in Hudsons Road when the West Gate Tunnel is completed in 2022.
‘‘
All the big trucks are coming in off Simmock Avenue - Hugh McKenzie
’’
The 24-hour bans won’t apply to trucks that have destinations or origins in the area or are loading and unloading in the area. As reported by Star Weekly Weekly, residents fear trucks trying to avoid the tunnel tolls will use Hudsons Road. Resident Robert Taylor, whose objection is among 24 received by the council, said he objected to the company being exempt from the future Hudsons Road truck ban. “The proposed truck curfew with the opening of the new West Gate Bridge on-ramps off Simcock Avenue and Hyde Street, Yarraville, was a welcome relief and I initially had no issues with the O-I re-development,” he said. “My neighbours and local shop owners in the Spotswood strip have pointed out to me the exemption being requested by O-I for their new truck entrance [in Hudsons Road] between Bernard and Robb streets.” Acting for O-I, ProUrban director Hugh
Spotswood resident Robert Taylor is concerned about trucks on Hudsons Road. (Joe Mastroianni)
McKenzie told a community meeting that even if the new access points in Hudsons Road weren’t built, the business would be exempt from the truck ban. He said distribution trucks would not be entering or leaving the site via the new access points on Hudsons Road.
“The two crossovers at Hudsons Road and the westernmost crossover will primarily be used for cars,” Mr McKenzie said. “The distribution side of things, all the big trucks are coming in off Simcock Avenue on the northern side of the site.”

Residents have expressed frustration at the impact of ongoing major works to replace water mains in Yarraville and Kingsville, citing concerns about traffic management and safety. Melbourne Water works to build the new M102 Water Main have ripped up the westbound lanes of Somerville Road in Yarraville, significantly narrowing the road to maintain two-way traffic. A Maryston Street resident said the closure had blocked their street, forcing them to access Somerville Road by driving to another street via a narrow laneway. He said the inadequate traffic management system was also making the turn onto Somerville Road from side streets dangerous. Melbourne Water project manager Rohan Escreet said the safety of staff, contractors and the community is always of the highest priority. “During these works, access was maintained for all residents via an existing ‘right-of-way’ laneway running parallel with Somerville Road,” he said. Mr Escreet said Melbourne Water has kept residents and businesses informed about the works through public information sessions, letters, newsletters, door knocks and website updates. A VicRoads spokesman said the relevant stretch of Somerville Road was the responsibility of Maribyrnong council. The council did not respond to a request for comment. Benjamin Millar

The great Hansen divide debate By Goya Dmytryshchak A petition calling for Hansen Street in Altona North to be returned to Newport has been submitted to Hobsons Bay council. A supporting document submitted to the council states that residents on the eastern side of Hansen Street bought property advertised and sold to them as being in Newport, only to find out at the 11th hour that they had purchased in Altona North.
Residents say issues associated with the boundary include a reduction in house value, increase in insurance premiums for homes and cars, problems with mail delivery and GPS, and residents having mixed identification and property documents. The supporting document states that the boundary inexplicably changed in 1999 but the reason why is unclear. “Local rumour mills suggest that there may have been a conflict of interest involved in the
decision making process at the time – however this has not been substantiated,” it states. “Residents that were owners here at the time do not remember being advised or consulted about the proposed change. “Some older owners and residents of Hansen Street are unaware of the change and believe that they still belong to the suburb of Newport.” The petition, signed by 64 people, requests that Newport’s western boundary be brought
back to the middle of Hansen Street in line with Newport’s historical location, Australian Bureau of Statistics maps, Hobsons Bay’s garbage collection route, and Hobsons Bay’s neighbourhood residential zone and neighbourhood character precinct. The supporting document states that a housing estate in Mason Street has been split in two because of the boundary. The petition is being considered by the council.

Maribyrnong mayor Martin Zakharov said the festival is an opportunity to celebrate an age-old practice that has been all but lost in the modern day society. “The free guided walks in Footscray Park and Footscray Cemetery will also be fascinating, providing rare and unique insights into Australia’s finest remaining Edwardian garden and the flu pandemic that wreaked havoc in the early 1900s and how it was managed in Footscray.” Details: www.australianheritagefestival.org. au Benjamin Millar Blacksmith Lisa Fitzgerald at work. Mr Rasheed told Star Weekly about the first dish he plates up for judges Matt Preston, Gary Mehigan and George Calombaris. “I’ve done a baclava ice cream cone,” he said. “It’s homemade filo pastry as the cone and that’s topped with roasted pistachio ice cream and pistachio paste,” he said. “Just to be there and know that you’re going to be cooking for these three amazing judges … I really wanted to make sure that I cooked my best.” Hailing from an Egyptian background, Mr Rasheed said he had cooked all his life.
“My mother and grandmother, they used to cook every day and I used to always learn and watch them cook,” he said. Mr Rasheed, who works in the corporate sector, said his philosophy towards food is that it brings people together. “The way I see food is, I truly believe that food … is like the centrepiece anywhere you go,” he said. “It’s the life of wherever you go.” Mr Toohey has taken a more savoury path for his signature dish and will be plating up a crispy skin cod with broccoli stem, jerusalem artichoke and pine nut cream. The pair will be among 24 amateur cooks when the show returns to Ten on April 29 at 7.30pm.

Beach water quality on the rise By Goya Dmytryshchak Water quality at Altona and Williamstown beaches improved last summer, according to the Environment Protection Authority’s review of Melbourne’s best and worst beaches. Both beaches were ranked equal 18th out of 36 Port Phillip Bay beaches. The previous summer, Williamstown was ranked 35 and Altona 26. The top-ranking bay beach for water quality was Santa Casa (Queenscliff). The worst beach
‘‘
Every dog owner who cleans up … is doing their bit - Andrea Hinwood
’’
was Brighton, where a sewage leak in a nearby street caused poor water quality for seven consecutive days. A common cause of poor water quality is algae, which occurs naturally in the bay.
Hobsons Bay’s beaches were affected by a marine algal bloom for more than six weeks. Blooms are concentrations of miniscule marine plants varying in colour and sometimes mistaken for oil pollution. EPA chief environmental scientist Andrea Hinwood said the few days a year when people were warned not to swim were often predictable and due to major rain events. “We advise people to avoid swimming near stormwater or river outlets for 24 to 48 hours after heavy rain because that’s when
animal droppings and other contaminants are washed into the bay from beaches and streets,” Dr Hinwood said. “And, of course, every dog owner who cleans up after their four-legged friend is doing their bit to keep the bay in good shape.” The EPA’s Yarra and Bay website provides twice daily forecasts of good, fair or poor water quality for the following day and gives swimmers information to guard against infections, stomach upsets and skin irritation. Journey through film Filmmakers are being invited to share their journey with the annual Altona Beach Film Festival, now in its fifth year. Entries open on May 1 for the short film festival and this year’s theme is ‘Journey’. President Annette Stephens said the theme was one of the broadest yet and entrants were encouraged to put their own spin on it. “It can be a journey that you’ve had as a holiday or your journey as life or just a simple journey of walking to the shops here and there,” she said. “Journey can be used in many different ways. It might be a friend’s journey, an animal’s journey. Maybe it’s just a simple plane ride from here to Brisbane.” Last year’s festival attracted 32 entries. “We’ve had an increase in people from overseas and nationally entering, so that’s been great,” Ms Stephens said. “One of the reasons we started this festival was to give amateur filmmakers and
professionals an opportunity to have their films seen by a large audience and judged by professionals.” This year’s judging panel will include noted documentary maker Wain Fimeri from Altona and past winner Aaron Ellis from Altona Meadows. Films, including titles and credits, can be no longer than seven minutes. Awards will be presented in age categories of 13 or under, 14 to 21 and open age. There will also be Best in Festival and People’s Choice awards. All films entered, along with awards and $2300 prize money, will be presented at a gala film screening at Altona City Theatre on August 17. Films can be submitted until June 30. New Homes Quick guide for first home buyers New ABS Housing Finance data released in January reveals the number of first-home buyer commitments as a percentage of total owner-occupied new housing loans has reached a six-year high of 18.3 per cent. In light of this, financial comparison website Canstar looks at the six mistakes first-time buyers can’t afford to make.
2. Not saving for a 20 per cent deposit While not all lenders require a 20 per cent deposit, falling short of this can be costly with buyers required to pay Lenders Mortgage Insurance (LMI). A financial institution will typically make LMI a condition of borrowing if the deposit for the loan is less than 20 per cent of the property’s value. In some instances, buyers can be required to pay in the range of $15,000 for LMI. 3. Not understanding interest rates If you’re looking to get into property, understanding interest rates is a must. Interest rates fluctuate and as rates rise so too will the monthly repayments. Prospective buyers should read up on what’s influencing interest rates, so they’re not blindsided when rates increase
(iStock)
1. Not knowing your budget Shopping around for a new home before understanding what the banks are willing to lend can mean wasting time. First-home buyers need to ensure they have a clear idea on their budget before they go house hunting. This will ensure buyers are aware of what they can afford before getting hung up on a dream home beyond their means.
4. Emptying your savings Beyond the purchase price, buying costs first-home buyers also need to consider include stamp duty, government fees, building inspections, transfer fees, solicitor fees, new furniture and more. While having the largest possible deposit is great, home buyers should be mindful of additional buying expenses and unexpected costs arising. Take into account maintenance and other
living and moving costs. These are often overlooked, delaying repairs and creating financial stress. 5. Not looking for first-home buyer grants First-time buyers don’t have to go it alone. The First Home Owners Grant is designed to encourage and assist home ownership across the nation, and it can contribute to a great start to life as a property owner. In most cases the First Home Owners
Grant is only for buying or building a new house or unit, although in some places it can be used for established homes as well. 6. Not negotiating Too often people rely on the home loans presented to them. First-time buyers should research what is available in the market and be prepared to negotiate on the interest rate to avoid paying too much.

Marigold blooms in the west
Following the successful launch in October last year of stages 1 and 2 of Marigold estate in Tarneit north, Growland has announced its stage 3 release in the master-planned residential development, 27 kilometres west of Melbourne’s CBD. Tucked between established Tarneit and the newly gazetted suburb of Mt Atkinson, Marigold estate offers future residents a convenient lifestyle, with ready access to primary and secondary schools, a childcare centre and medical facilities. With many of Melbourne’s leading builders offering house and land packages, Growland is confident Marigold, a 60-hectare development, will continue to hold its lustre for many years to come. Paul O’Brien, project director for Marigold, says that with about 900 blocks – ranging from 212 to 813 square metres – the estate offers a dream home solution for all types of purchasers. “Marigold has out-performed Tarneit,” says Mr O’Brien. “And, in our view, Tarneit has out-performed the market … our expectations are soaring high for this parcel of land. It has the best and most affordable pricing for its 400-squaremetre blocks at $344,000. “With land prices starting from as little as $185,200, Marigold presents an ideal offering for all types of buyers, including first-time buyers wanting to build a home amidst loads of green space.” “Construction on stages 1 and 2 has already started and, with the new state-of-the-art sales office now open, buyers can drop by and learn about Tarneit and all it has to offer – in surroundings that are as comfortable as they are first class.” A range of new off-the-plan house and land packages, catering
for families wanting three and four bedrooms, provides full turnkey all-inclusive opportunities. This includes permit/site costs, landscaped gardens, fencing, concrete driveway and window furnishings. Even the letterbox and clothesline are included in the price. Marigold boasts 0.48 hectares of open space, with an additional 1.045 hectares earmarked for parks to be later managed by Wyndham council.
“in our view, Tarneit has outperformed the market” Just a two-minute drive from Tarneit Shopping Centre and three to six minutes from Tarneit Central and Wyndham Village shopping centres, the estate is brimming with convenience. Another advantage is the three-minute drive to Tarneit train station, ensuring easy access to transport for work, study and play. Numerous recreational options abound, with the Great Ocean Road, Daylesford and Kyneton handy for weekend escapes or simply a day’s getaway.
Mr O’Brien says that the infrastructure being set up in Tarneit is second to none. “With access to an A-grade rail network and good exposure to public transport and other transport links, Tarneit is quickly becoming the growth area for metropolitan Melbourne,” he says. “The vibrant suburb offers peace of mind and a chance to enjoy a slice of rural life with city conveniences.” Growland has committed itself to Melbourne and sees this area as one that deserves the most attention given the accommodation needs of new migrants. Mr O’Brien says that this, coupled with Melbourne’s ever-ballooning population, makes a move to this western corridor logical and sensible. “Our plans are to give home buyers an array of opportunities,” he says. “Buying a new home is their single largest investment and it is important that the choice of suburb and housing stock matches with the needs of a growing community.” Fast becoming a force to be reckoned with, Growland’s keen interest is to provide families with the chance to build an affordable home with a splash of luxury. Plans for the future at Marigold include a childcare centre to be built next year, as well as cycling tracks and sports ovals – health and wellbeing is a high priority at Marigold. Marigold sales office, 1030 Dohertys Road, Tarneit. Opens 11am-5pm daily. Inquiries: 1300 888 181 or marigoldtarneit.com.au

This property boasts handcrafted wrought iron gates and lacework on the balcony, exemplifying its distinctive approach to design. Its uniqueness is again evident in the alfresco area, where a water feature, hand made by Rudi Jass, is a focal point. Another boast is its seaside locale, with The Strand a five-minute saunter away, while schools and shops are also within easy reach. Entry is to a wide hallway laid with floorboards. A door on the left opens to the meals area which has an archway to the kitchen, and the large family area beyond. White plantation shutters are on some windows, others have roller blinds; carpet is grey and the colour palette is neutral with the occasional accent wall. The kitchen, with plenty of cupboards in a rich woodgrain laminate, has warm-white granite benches, red glass splashbacks and stainless-steel dishwasher, underbench oven and gas cooktop. Bi folds open to a covered deck, which is rimmed by paving and looks out to rendered planter boxes and fences screened by timber and rendered panels. A carpeted living room at the head of the stairs has french doors to the front balcony. Three spacious fitted bedrooms (including the main with walk-in robe) are ranged around this, as is a two-way bathroom and separate toilet. The property also has a single garage, with a crazy-tiled facade and distinctive door.

Watching ships cruising on the bay and city lights twinkling is all part of daily life at this waterfront dwelling. It’s also directly opposite a small beach with tidal pools, and the green expanse of WG Cresser Reserve. Built to a high standard on the cusp of the ’80s, the house reveals architecture that was likely ahead of the times, with the main living area sited upstairs, and lots of big windows under transoms and/or clerestories to welcome in seaside light. 37 MARIBYRNONG & HOBSONS BAY STAR WEEKLY \ APRIL 24, 2019
SPORT Dual gold medallist has world at her feet Teenage sensation Celeste Mucci continues to grab the national headlines for her track-and-field prowess. The young Williamstown Athletics Club athlete has been dubbed a star of the future after taking the Australian Athletics Championships by storm earlier this month. The 19-year-old claimed gold medals in both the heptathlon and 100-metre hurdles. “I was very happy to win both the heptathlon and the hurdles,” Mucci said “I was more expecting to do well in the heptathlon, but I’ll take the hurdles as well, which is just a bonus for me and it’s great.” Mucci was fit and firing for the nationals, which took place at Sydney Olympic Park. If there was a concern, it was that the heptathlon was her first for the season on the biggest stage. “I had a good prep [fitness-wise] leading in,” Mucci said. “It was my first heptathlon for the season, which is not ideal being nationals, but I just had to put one together.
“I was happy with how I performed with that being the first one.” The heptathlon is a seven-event competition. Mucci placed first in the 100m hurdles, 200m and long jump, and came third in the high jump. She came fifth in both the javelin and 800m, while her 11th place in the shot put did not prove enough of a hindrance to knock her off top spot. Her shot put technique is still a work-in-progress. “Overall, I was very happy with it,” Mucci said. “Going forward, it’s given me confidence to compete against those type of girls. “I just think it was great being competitive in that field. “Hopefully I can take it overseas and in international competitions.” After two days of competition in the heptathlon, Mucci turned her attention to the 100m hurdles. What she did in that event had athletics followers in awe.
She became the first woman in 25 years to hold the heptathlon and 100m hurdles Australian titles at the one time. Mucci was going for gold, but even she was taken aback by her success in the hurdles after a gruelling heptathlon leading in. “The hurdles was after the two-day heptathlon, so I just thought I wouldn’t be as fresh as I usually would,” she said. “I didn’t have any of the pressure on me that I put on myself [in the heptathlon]. “I ran consistently, so that was what I was happy about. I was trying to stick with the other girls and I did.” Next month, Mucci will head to Europe for competition, with an invite to the Gotzis heptathlon her main target. “The best in the world will be competing, so that will be really exciting,” Mucci said. The Oceania Championships and University Games are the other major events that Mucci is targeting in 2019. Lance Jenkinson

Puli is a study in true grit By Lance Jenkinson Put a challenge in the way of Werribee basketball rising star Maddi Puli and she will invariably find a way to overcome it. The first signs of Puli’s determination to conquer pressure situations came as an under-14 player at the Werribee Devils. Puli missed the cut for the first team representative squad. But instead of putting that challenge into the too-hard basket, she used it as motivation. “That made me work harder to try and make the first team the next year,” she said. “What I like about basketball is the opportunity to develop and get better is always there.” Since that knock-back, Puli has made a rapid rise into multiple Victorian under-age state teams, Australian under-age representation and a development spot on a WNBL roster. Now 18, Puli has the basketball world at her feet. She is striving the make the cut for the Australian Gems under-19 team that will play at the world championships later this year. Puli was recently informed that she had been accepted for a basketball scholarship to Texas Christian University, a division 1 basketball college. The four-year scholarship will allow Puli to mix her studies with hoop dreams. “It’ll be an unbelievable opportunity,” she said. “We’re in a really tough conference … it will be good to put myself up against some of the best in the country over there.” Before Puli jets off to the US in June, she will leave no stone unturned in her bid to make the Gems’ squad. The award, hosted by the Sunshine Western Region Sports Club and Star Weekly Weekly, recognises young athletes from the western suburbs who have achieved outstanding results at state and/ or national levels. Puli will receive $1000 and other prizes, donated by the Yarraville Club Cricket Club, to assist her in achieving her sports goals.

Talented rower on the rise By Lance Jenkinson Footscray City Rowing Club’s rising star Louisa Bongrain will head into the off season with a hint of satisfaction after taking an enormous step in her rowing career this summer. All the early mornings on the Maribyrnong River and the hard work in the gym came to fruition for Bongrain after she turned heads with strong results at local and national competitions. “It probably would be my best season to date based off overall results,” she said. “Not so much in how many trophies you bring home, but I’ve won some bigger events than I normally have, so that’s always good. “When you compete at a national level, you kind of see better competition. “It’s been a big step up from last year to this year.” Bongrain will cherish her break-out performance at the nationals. Competing at the home of rowing in Penrith, the 17-year-old impressed in all three
of her events, but it was a bronze medal in the schoolgirls single scull that was the most memorable. “Even though it wasn’t a win, the bronze at nationals was definitely the highlight of the season,” she said. “You do enjoy the sport, but it is tough sometimes the early mornings, so it’s nice to get a bit of reward. “That was my first time up on the podium at the nationals. “To go up there and have them hand you a national medal is definitely cool.” Bongrain was competing among the best rowers in Australia. There were also invitees from Team Japan in her events. In the under-19 single scull, Bongrain won her heat, came third in the semi-final and eighth in the final. In the under-19s double scull, racing with Melbourne Rowing Club’s Sophie Scott, the pair came second in their heat, fourth in the semi-final and sixth in the final. Bongrain was thrilled to race alongside the
star rowers in her age group. “It was very exciting,” she said. “You try and keep cool when you get up there, but I was definitely nervous. “At the end of the day, it is fun to race and that’s what you’re there for, so if you give it everything, you can’t be too disappointed.” Bongrain, a student at Maribrynong College, credited her coach Tony Lawless for the significant improvement in her rowing this season. Lawless has been her coach for four years. “Tony’s a massive part of my rowing,” Bongrain said. “Not only is it nice to have someone there to support me, but he has the knowledge to pass on and you build a friendship with your coach as well. “They kind of know how to encourage and support, so it’s really helpful to have him there. “He’s half the team really.” The future looks bright for Bongrain. The Kensington resident aspires to row for the Australian national team in the future, but she will go as far as her talent will take her.
Deer Park hones its hunger Deer Park has made a roaring start to its chase for a record-extending seventh consecutive premiership in Western Region Football League division 1. The Lions erased any concerns over a potential bumpy start to the season by opening with two straight wins. With the Lions starting their pre-season later than most sides after going deep into the 2018 finals and having a host of top-line players unavailable with injuries in the opening fortnight, there was a feeling they could be susceptible to an early upset loss. Those fears were unfounded as Deer Park posted commanding wins over Caroline Springs and Sunshine in the first two rounds. “We always have a late start to proceedings [after a premiership] and nothing has changed this year,” Lions’ coach Marc Bullen said. “We counted that we had 23 unavailable through the seniors and the reserves. “To win pretty comfortably, with the amount of players unavailable and the injuries we’ve got at the moment, is a pleasing sign, but there’s a lot of work to do going forward.” There is no doubt that Deer Park was blessed with a favourable draw to open the season. In recent years, the Lions have had to lock horns with fellow flag contender Altona in round one, which has thrown up some thrilling encounters. Caroline Springs is an emerging team and Sunshine is finding its way under a new coach – they are not comparable to Altona at this stage of their growth. “We’ve had Altona the last three years, which is always a challenge, so to have what you’d call an easier draw at the start of the year has been a Godsend to us,” Bullen said. “We’ve definitely got some huge challenges coming up after the Easter break, though. “The competition has gone from strength to strength … having a look at some of the results and some of the video replays from the weekend, it’s pleasing to see the strength of the football.” Deer Park will have some selection headaches in coming weeks. Premiership stars Jack Purton-Smith, Chris Stewart, Jackson Barling, Rodney Van Riet, James Wong and Jake McKenzie are on track to make their season debuts. Their absences might have been a blessing in disguise, as Bullen has been thrilled with the performances of young Lions who have been forced to take their games to another level. “The best three players have been Sohrob Ismail, Mark Galea and Spiros Amarantidis,” he said. “They’ve been super, their pre-seasons were outstanding and they’ve certainly developed as players. “Our ever-reliable superstar in Kwame

Braybrook will host Albanvale in a special Anzac Day game in Western Region Football League division 3 at Pennell Reserve. The two sides will battle it out for the inaugural Deer Park Club Cup. Albanvale coach Andrew Bryson said the significance of playing on Anzac Day would be respectfully observed before the match took place. “It is such a privilege to play on Anzac Day,” he said. “It’s a significant day in our country’s history and it is an opportunity for us to show our respect to all past and current service men and women.”
Basketball
Altona Gators will be hoping to turn its season around when it returns to the court in the Big V basketball men’s division 2 after a break. The Gators have struggled in the opening six rounds with a 1-5 record with their only win coming against the bottomof-the-ladder Mornington Breakers. Despite the negative in the win-loss column, Altona has lost three of its five matches by single digits, so it is not that far away. However, the Gators need to find a way to get that winning feeling back, starting with Sunday’s clash against Maccabi Warriors at the Altona Basketball Stadium, otherwise their season could become a lost cause.
Football
Western Jets will be striving for a bit more consistency when it returns to the field in the NAB League against Tasmania Devils at the University of Tasmania Stadium in Launceston on Sunday. The Jets went into the Easter break at 2-2 with their form wildly fluctuating from game to game. Their last outing was a runaway 71-point victory over Northern Territory at Downer Oval. Jonah Horo was best-on-ground with 18 disposals and a goal, while Aaron Clarke kicked four goals.
Sohrob Ismail looks set for a big season with Deer Park. (Damjan Janevski)
McHarg has been pretty impressive, as well.” Much interest has surrounded the arrival of big name-recruit Jack Redpath and how the forward line would function with him and Jase Perkins in it. Redpath has kicked seven goals in two games, while Perkins has snared nine – and so far it has clicked. Though Bullen admits the transition from the midfield to attack needs to get better.
“We’re still a work in progress with our functionality forward of centre,” Bullen said. Most pleasing has been the team’s hunger to compete. There are no signs of a premiership hangover for the Lions. “The hunt, the desire and the effort to get the footy off the opposition has been very good in the first couple of rounds,” Bullen said.
