Hobsons Bay home owners can mostly expect rates relief due to the property market downturn. The council last week released its draft annual budget for 2019-20, which proposes an average 2.47 per cent overall rate increase in line with the state government’s rate cap of 2.5 per cent. It has reduced the overall rise by .03 per cent to compensate for an administrative error last year. Due to rates being based on new 2019 valuations, increases or decreases will vary, but changes will not be as significant as last year. “The average increase in residential rates will be 0.7 per cent (or $14) due to the decrease in residential valuations compared to slight increases (generally) in the non-residential sector,” the budget papers state. “The most significant increases are in Laverton (5.05 per cent) and Seaholme (4.19 per cent). “All other suburbs are expected to experience rate increases below the rate cap (2.5 per cent) and some will even experience decreases to their rates.” Rates are forecast to increase in Altona (1.99 per cent), Altona Meadows (1.64 per cent), Seabrook (1.32 per cent), South Kingsville (0.39 per cent), Spotswood (1.85 per cent) and Williamstown (0.21 per cent). Rates will drop in Altona North (-0.68 per cent), Brooklyn (-1.77 per cent), Newport (-0.67 per cent) and Williamstown North (-2.01 per cent). Waste service charges, which are exempt from the rate cap, will increase by an average of 2.56 per cent. The rate changes are in stark contrast to double-digit rate rises in 2018-19 based on property valuations from January last year. The council received 483 complaints about last year’s valuations. Under last year’s budget, residential ratepayers were hit with an average increase of eight per cent and paid up to 20.6 per cent more in Seabrook, Altona Meadows and Laverton. From this year, the Valuer-General will conduct revaluations annually instead of having local councils perform them every second year. Cr Sandra Wilson said moving to annual, centralised revaluations might result in an “evening out” of rate rises. The council is proposing a record $56.15 million in capital works next financial year.

Crane smashes home By Benjamin Millar A Yarraville family was lucky to escape with their lives after being nearly crushed inside their home by a falling crane. Schild Street resident Anna Pace was at home with her son and nephew when the mobile crane crashed through their roof about 1pm last Wednesday. The crane had been positioning a pre-fabricated house onto the property next door when it overbalanced and toppled, smashing the house and causing extensive damage to the Pace’s house. An Ambulance Victoria spokeswoman said the crane driver, who was standing at the base of the crane, and a crane rigger were assessed at
the scene by paramedics and cleared of serious injury. Ms Pace, her son Fred, 17 and nephew Daniel Pantalleresco, 19 narrowly escaped injury while the family shih tzu Toby had to wriggle his way free of fallen rubble as the living room and kitchen was crushed. Mr Pantalleresco said he was watching TV with his cousin when the house started shaking and he started hearing loud bangs. “Then we saw the house cave in, the roof and side of the house. We didn’t know where to run, the whole house was collapsing and so we ran to the front … There were loud bangs, workers screaming,” he said. Ms Pace expects the entire house will need to be rebuilt and is hopeful the family can find
This year’s Anzac commemoration services in Hobsons Bay have been jointly co-ordinated by Friends of the Williamstown RSL, Altona RSL and the rebirthed Newport RSL following several disruptions. As reported by Star Weekly Weekly, Diggers regrouped to form a Friends group after the Williamstown RSL sub-branch closed in 2017 due to a multi-million dollar debt. Newport RSL was saved after the sub-branch last month elected a new committee and RSL Victoria cleared its debts of about $50,000. Immediate past president of the former Williamstown RSL, Vietnam veteran Bruce O’Brien said Anzac commemorations had been jointly planned. The Williamstown dawn service will be held at 5.45am on Thursday, April 25 at the Williamstown cenotaph, followed by a gunfire breakfast at Hobsons Bay Yacht Club. “As Williamstown will not be holding its annual ‘Sunday prior to Anzac Day’ march this year, all military, former military, descendants and relatives are asked to muster at Syme Street (Gem Pier) at 5.15am for a 5.30am silent march to the cenotaph, led by a lone drummer,” Mr O’Brien said. Newport members will march from their club at 2pm on Anzac Day for a commemorative service at the Newport cenotaph, before returning for refreshments. Newport and Williamstown members will also march with Altona RSL at 2pm on Saturday, April 20. The march to the Altona cenotaph will be followed by refreshments back at Altona RSL Club. Spotswood Kingsville RSL’s service will be held in its memorial garden on Anzac Day at 3pm. Goya Dmytryshchak
a nearby rental while Fred completes his VCE studies. About 20 firefighters from the Metropolitan Fire Brigade responded to the incident. MFB commander Roger Chitty said the crane was turning around a module of the pre-fabricated home at the time of the collapse. A larger rescue crane was brought in on Wednesday to remove the fallen crane, but difficulties extracting it from the wreck of the fallen home delayed the final removal until Friday. WorkSafe is investigating the collapse, the latest in a string of incidents involving cranes in Melbourne over the past year.

Fireys fight for toxic dump laws By Benjamin Millar Firefighters are calling for tougher laws targeting operators who illegally stockpile toxic chemical waste such as that burnt in the blaze that tore through a Tottenham warehouse. The United Firefighters Union has written to Premier Daniel Andrews calling for the emergency laws to protect emergency services workers from toxic “death traps”. UFU Victorian branch secretary Peter Marshall’s letter says the UFU is not prepared to sit back and allow members to be unnecessarily
exposed to risk “which will result in serious injury or death”. “The illegal stockpiling of toxic waste will kill. It has likely already altered the life expectancy of a number of our members as a result of this illegal activity by unscrupulous persons … Effectively these unlawful actions are condemning our members to a future of hideous, debilitating illnesses which could ultimately result in premature death.” Mr Marshall was joined at a campaign launch on Monday by firefighters who suffered from serious health complaints during and
ability for firefighters to sue those responsible for illegally transporting and dumping chemical waste. Meanwhile efforts to decontaminate Stony Creek have suffered a fresh setback with the Environment Protection Authority confirming it is investigating a “murky red substance” that began running from a stormwater drain into the creek on Friday. Friends of Cruickshank Park secretary Sue Vittori said the contamination is likely to have undone much of the clean-up work by Melbourne Water over the past few months.
after battling last August’s Tottenham blaze. Firefighters who battled for days to control that blaze and the recent chemical fire at Campbellfield experienced nosebleeds, lung infections, rashes and even memory loss after being exposed to smoke from a cocktail of harmful chemicals. The UFU is campaigning for stronger laws, arguing current legislation has failed to provide a deterrent to rogue operators. Mr Marshall said the union wants criminal sanctions including jail terms, higher penalties against companies and their directors and the
Wally found at Yarraville Where’s Wally? The iconic yet elusive book character suddenly popped up all over Yarraville Village last week, his trademark red and white-striped tops and blue pants covering more than half a dozen of the council’s unused parking meters. Maribyrnong council introduced the meters amid great controversy in 2015 and they have remained in place despite being non-operational for more than three years. The meters, vandalised a number of times before even being switched on, were switched off only months after being introduced. There are no plans for them to be returned to use, despite the council foregoing more than $8 million in revenue since a parking fee freeze in central Footscray and Yarraville. While the Wally likenesses were not put in place or authorised by Maribyrnong council, the council has no plans to remove them. Trevor Junge of the Yarraville Traders

Association said traders spent three years trying to get the meters removed or covered up, only for a guerrilla group to finally get it done. “In light of the endless gas, water, NBN, and TPG works that have seen Yarraville’s streets repeatedly blocked and patched up, Wally has given Yarraville a much-needed positive talking point,” he said. “We have asked on numerous times for the meters to be removed and for three years they’ve sat confusing our shoppers whether they’re working or not.”

Aths club fights for ‘local’ name By Goya Dmytryshchak Plans to rename the Newport athletics track after Peter Norman have been opposed by the Williamstown Athletic Club. Hobsons Bay council in December mooted renaming the track in honour of the late Williamstown sprinter, widely remembered for standing in solidarity with athletes giving the black power salute. Mr Norman claimed silver at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics by running 200 metres in 20.06 seconds – still an Australian record. But he is widely remembered for wearing an Olympic Project for Human Rights badge in support of African American runners Tommie Smith and John Carlos, who raised their fists in silent protest on the medal dais – a moment captured in what Time magazine called the most iconic photograph of all time. However, Williamstown Athletic Club members such as Grant McKay say they put up a proposal years ago to rename the track in honour of Graeme Morrish, QC, who died in 1993. “We’ve been trying since at least 1993 to have the track named after Graeme, who did a lot of work in the area,” Mr McKay said. “Without him, there wouldn’t be a track in the place. Past president David Jamieson said Mr Morrish used his legal skills to negotiate with the then Williamstown council and the State Electricity Commission to establish a track at the old Newport power station. “The club’s position is that it’s opposed to naming it Peter Norman primarily because he was not a Williamstown athlete; he ran for East Melbourne Harriers. “He was not involved at all in any of the work to establish the track and any of the facilities at

the track. “The person who was primarily responsible for making it happen – it just wouldn’t be there if he wasn’t involved through that 10-year period – was Graeme Morrish.” The late Joan Kirner in 1996 wrote a letter supporting the renaming of the track in Mr
Morrish’s honour, but the council at the time said its policy was to name the track after the location, not an individual. Peter Norman’s wife Jan Norman said she understood if people wanted to name the track after Mr Morrish. “I think that’s fine because Peter didn’t ever
run on the track at Newport,” she said. “I would hate to have people not happy. I’d rather he wasn’t giving his name to the track if some people didn’t want that to happen.” Hobsons Bay councillors are expected to make a decision at the May 14 ordinary council meeting.

Unearthing deadly past By Goya Dmytryshchak A guided bus tour of “God’s half acre” – or Williamstown Cemetery – will take in the suburb’s old morgue and original 1842 burial ground. Friends of Williamstown Cemetery has hired a bus for next month’s tour, Journey to the Dead Centre of Town, which coincides with the Australian Heritage Festival from April 18 to May 19. Tour guide Brian Haynes said the bus would travel to sites connected with the history of Williamstown Cemetery.

“Starting at the Williamstown Cemetery, we will travel to the Williamstown morgue, constructed 1860 – the stone quarried by local convicts – and learn about its history and the purpose behind the morgue,” he said. “Today, it is one of the oldest public morgues in Australia. “We then travel to the ex-burial ground at Point Gellibrand – the first official burial site in Williamstown – where its colourful history will be discussed, including its origins when the fever ship, Manilus, arrived in early 1842. “In 1899, the burial ground was exhumed and the bodies moved to the Williamstown Cemetery, creating the largest mass grave in Australia.” After a coffee break, the bus will drive past hotels where bodies were stored and inquests held before returning to Williamstown Cemetery.

The 177-year-old Altona Homestead will open its doors for a display of childhood games of yesteryear. Altona Laverton Historical Society president Kim Reilly said people were invited to see a display from times when families sat around the table playing board games, card games and putting jigsaw puzzles together. “Games like draughts, snakes and ladders and Chinese checkers,” she said. “Some of the toys go back to the early 1900s up to the 1990s. “There is a set of Cuisenaire rods that I remember using in school back in the 1960s to help solve maths problems – it was such a fun (and educational) game when we were kids.” The homestead, which has also been at the centre of paranormal investigations, will also host a ghost tour. Battle to save centre By Goya Dmytryshchak More than 500 people have signed a petition to save Cooraminta Children’s Centre at Altona Meadows, which has been earmarked for demolition to make way for an aquatic centre. As reported by Star Weekly last month, the council’s Hobsons Bay Aquatic Strategy 2019-2030 outlines plans for a $40.75 million Western Aquatic Centre to be built at Bruce Comben Reserve. It would include an eight-lane, 25-metre pool and smaller pools, wellness centre, gym, cafe and new childcare centre. Cooraminta committee president Belinda Koolen said parents opposed plans to replace a centre that was about 30 years old and used by 200 families. “The pool’s a great idea, but not at the expense of Cooraminta being demolished,” she said. “I feel that the pool could happily co-exist alongside the centre. “Losing the centre means losing that culture, the community, that’s been there. “It’s a diverse group of children there and when you knock that down you miss that community feel that’s been established at that centre. “As well as the staff, who, if it’s privatised, won’t necessarily have their jobs back. “I’ve got four boys who have all been to the centre. “My boys have had a great experience at that centre. And although my last one’s finishing this year, I wouldn’t want future kids to miss out.” Hobsons Bay mayor Jonathon Marsden said the new aquatic centre would have an improved children’s centre. “The proposed early years facility will be an exciting addition to Altona Meadows,” he said.
Belinda Koolen with sons William, 4, Oliver, 11, Jeremy, 9, and Connor, 6. (Damjan Janevski)
“If delivered, the new facility will provide more opportunities for three and four year olds to enjoy kinder in a new and improved centre. “We are currently in the middle of public consultation for the draft strategy and I strongly encourage our entire community to tell us what you think by lodging your feedback.” Cr Colleen Gates said she was disappointed the council hadn’t consulted the centre.
“It has been disappointing to find out, after it was published, that during the development of the strategy, Cooraminta were not asked if they would like a new facility or not,” she said. “This is the first time something like this has gone out for community comment. It’s not perfect, but the intention is certainly not to compromise one service to benefit another.”

Record spend in draft budget Hobsons Bay council is proposing a record $56.15 million capital works spend under its draft 2019-20 budget. It has allocated $27.2 million for buildings, $16.2 million for open space, $4.2 million for roads, $3.2 million for footpaths and cycleways, $1.7 million for drainage and $1.3 million for libraries. Major building projects include the $7 million Altona Sports Centre extension and $5.3 million Altona Civic Centre customer service and community meeting space. A further $4.4 million is earmarked for sports redevelopment projects at Bayside College campuses in Newport and Williamstown, which will be available for the community to use. There is $3.8 million allocated for Donald McLean Reserve, $3.7 million for Crofts Reserve, $2.965 for JT Gray Reserve, $2.4 million for Digman Reserve, $1.4 million for Dennis Reserve and $1.1 million for Fearon Reserve. Cr Peter Hemphill told last week’s council meeting that the capital works spend was almost double that spent in the past few years, with sport and recreation facilities scooping about $43 million. “We have been successful in getting a lot of grants – I think collectively they total $10.6 million – and most of that comes from the state government,” he said. The community is being invited to provide feedback until May 15. Goya Dmytryshchak

Archery passion hits the bullseye David Nguyen has found the perfect outlet for his perfectionist streak. Nguyen, a teacher at Braybrook College, took up archery after coming across it by chance about seven years ago. Rising through the ranks at Braybrook-based Southern Cross Archery Club to become an instructor, Nguyen said the sport had become a passion. “It was a fascination with the process,” he said. “I was not really a team sports person – with archery, it allows me to live out my perfectionism.” Nguyen is taking his love for the sport to a worldwide audience. He recently added another string to his bow, notching up 100,000 subscribers to his archery-themed YouTube channel. His NUSensei channel has developed a loyal following thanks to its mix of coaching, tips and archery insights. Nguyen said reaching the higher echelons of the sport required determination and practice, practice, practice. His club coach role cuts into his own time with bow in hand, but Nguyen is pleased to be able to share his experience. Nguyen is encouraging people to head to Southern Cross Archery Club at Pennell Reserve, Braybrook, from 10am on Saturdays for introductory beginner sessions.

Astute buyers are out in the market purchasing property as falls in house prices across the country are predicted to accelerate this year, one local real estate agent says. Rating’s agency Moody’s has forecast that parts of Melbourne are likely to face drops of more than 15 per cent over the next 12 months. Revising downwards its predictions for Melbourne, the agency now forecasts an 11.4 per cent fall in the city’s house prices. In January it was tiping a six per cent fall. Melbourne’s inner east is tipped to see falls of 16.3 per cent after a 5 per cent drop last year, while across the inner south prices are forecast to edge down by 14.2 per cent after a 4.4 per cent decline in 2018. The “best” performing parts of Melbourne are tipped to be the city’s north-east and west with falls of 8.5 per cent. Director of hockingstuart Altona and Williamstown Anthony Anile said the banking royal commission had been a “massive massive handbrake” on the real estate market. “It has a media-driven market,” he said. “Astute buyers are out in the market purchasing. “I still believe in the west, because we’re coming off a lower base but a massive influx of people coming into this country, particularly Melbourne, there’s still very, very good opportunity. “Loans now are harder to obtain, so that’s why we’ve seen a drop in clearance, why we’ve seen days on market increase and why we’ve seen property values decrease – because there just hasn’t been as many transactions.”

Yarraville tunnel compo bid By Clay Lucas, The Age Yarraville residents who will have the West Gate Tunnel built beneath their properties are launching legal action that could include compensation claims ranging from $60,000 to $120,000. The state government last year told about 100 Yarraville home owners whose properties would have the $6.7 billion toll road built beneath them that they would not suffer any financial loss.
These owners would get no compensation because, the government argued, other tunnelling projects in Melbourne – including EastLink and CityLink – had not resulted in long-term losses for those who owned property above them. But law firm Slater and Gordon is using reports by two of the city’s top property valuation experts to argue Yarraville property owners should be offered compensation. Practice group leader Manisha Blencowe said the government’s position was that there
wouldn’t be any claim for people who had a tunnel under their property. “But that is inconsistent with common sense and with how buyers operate,” she said. Slater and Gordon has 23 clients signed up to a legal action and is hoping to sign up more. Transurban’s West Gate Tunnel will see twin three-lane tunnels built under Yarraville, from the West Gate Freeway to just before the Maribyrnong River. The Andrews government last year gazetted laws taking the land underneath 260 properties
in all – including more than 100 homes in Yarraville – without any compensation offer. The tunnels will be about 15 metres under ground for most of their length. Letters sent last year by the government to home owners said that they may be entitled to some compensation if they could show financial loss from seizure of the “sub-stratum” land. But in that letter, the government told residents their properties would likely not lose value as a result of below-ground compulsory acquisition.
Lighting up Newport Newport is set to light up with The Outside Gallery exhibition launch of Traffic Light, comprising 11 huge permanently-installed light boxes that showcase photos by James Henry. Henry’s contemporary images of the West Gate Bridge will be placed on the back of Vinnies and the Seagulls Nest Club, to be viewed from Paine Reserve. “I’ve taken photos of the very recognisable entrances and exits and then I’ve used light from different captures of driving over the West Gate Bridge,” Henry said. “I’ve just finished doing music for the play, The Bridge, so it was quite an experience … being able to hear some stories from people first-hand as to what their experience was with the [West Gate Bridge] collapse. “When I took on the project, I was living in Footscray so the West Gate Bridge became part of my life and it’s nice to now be able to make an artistic contribution to its representation.”
Art & Industry festival director, Newport’s Donna Jackson said the gallery was developed after consultation with the local community as to how the reserve could be improved. The gallery is curated by Bindi Cole Chocka, as part of her residency at the festival until June 2020. Traffic Light will be launched with live music on Saturday, April 27 from 6-7pm. MY PLACE Altona North’s John Gai, also known by his stage name King Jag, speaks with Goya Dmytryshchak. is used by musicians from all over Melbourne, including myself. What do you like about Altona North? I love the local sports park. My friends and I sometime like to go play basketball or soccer or to simply get some fresh air. I also love seeing diverse groups of people from all parts of the world, backgrounds, socioeconomics and cultures. What don’t you like or what could be improved? There is pretty much nothing I could dislike about Hobson Bay. However, it would be great to have more parks and more opportunities for young adults to express themselves and be heard.
(Damjan Janevski)
What’s you favourite cafe and/or restaurant in the local area?
Can you tell me a bit about your background and journey to Australia? I was born during the Sudan violent civil war and my family became one of the millions displaced by the civil war. As a result, I was later raised in Kakuma, a refugee camp located in
Kenya. After a series of unspeakable horrors of war and displacement, my family was granted an immigration visa to Australia in 2005 with the help of our beloved family friend whom we dearly missed, Clarry Baulch. What’s your connection to Hobsons Bay?
I have lived around the Hobsons Bay area for at least six years, including Altona Meadows and Altona North. I usually go to the Newport community centre and have recently joined the FreeZA group designed for youth adults to share ideas in their creative fields. I currently have a recording studio at Altona North which
I’m a simple man and huge fan of pizza so I usually order from Pizza Kings. I also like to eat from Yummy Wok. You perform as King Jag. Can you tell me about your passion for music? My passion for music began at an early age in my little garage as a producer. I had my first huge performance as a young 17 year-old with my crew, Rolling Dice, at a talent show in Adelaide – which we ended up winning. My songs usually talk about real-life adversities, inspirations, stories, values and relationships. I have performed at several clubs, festivals and events.

Stella Stamatakis with prep pupils Estelle, Nathaniel, Yvette, Alexander and Gabriel. (Damjan Janevski)
This book is truly gran Retired Williamstown primary school teacher Stella Stamatakis has published a book about grandmothers to celebrate cultural diversity. Stamatakis, who is of Greek background, said her daughter, Elle, was the inspiration behind her book, What’s a Yiayia? “My mother was picking her up from school and she was very happy that yiayia was picking her up,” she said. “She told her friends, ‘My yiayia’s picking me up today’. Her friends said to her, ‘What’s a yiayia?’ “She was surprised that not everyone had a yiayia and it initiated a conversation at home about grandparents and everyone calling them different names. “Her dad’s Italian so she had a nonna and a yiayia. And that’s where the idea came from.”
Stamatakis said the book covered seven cultures including Chinese, Spanish, Vietnamese and Lebanese. “The story is, a child cooks a meal with their grandma, talks about what they call their grandma in their language,” she said. “So the Vietnamese one is ba and they make rice paper rolls together and the Italian one is nonna and they make ravioli. “It’s about grandmas and the importance of family and connectedness to your culture, but also accepting that we are all different but all the same as well.” What’s a Yiayia? is available from stellastamatakis.com or Amazon. FOOD REVIEW
CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir spices it up with Dukkah
co C ffe om e by plim U en p in t a r Sm y ok e
Dukkah is a bright new arrival on Vernon Street. The long dining room has been done up a treat. It’s casual and elegant, spacious and warm. There’s a lot of old, gorgeous wood in use. Bennie and I choose the easy option of getting stuck into the share platter, which sells for $48 for two people. It starts with three dips, all with clear and concise flavours – and all offering something different from most Mid-East eats emporiums. Lemon turmeric hummus with Egyptian dukkah, fel-fel (chargrilled capsicum cream cheese with sweet paprika, walnuts and chives) and beet labneh (caramelised beetroot and yoghurt with black sesame seeds) come with good toasted bread that runs out just before we’ve slurped the last of the dips. But as Bennie quips, more bread and we’d be stuffed before the mains arrive. And the share plate mains? They are splendid. Two fat, exemplary cigars of lamb kofta – dense, perfect and with just the right mild level of Mid East-style seasoning. Two skewers of chicken shish tawook with capsicum and red onion. The chook chunks look sufficiently large to promise dryness, but such is emphatically not the case. In other words, superb. Our meaty skewers were accompanied by very nice quinoa tabouli and rice pilaf in exactly the right proportions.
Artist Impression — Outdoor Dining and BBQ
Up in Smoke
Dukkah address: 23 Vernon Street, South Kingsville Phone: 9399 3737 As we gleefully devour all, father and son banter a bit about the merits of our meal – and its price. Bennie reckons $48 is a bit steep, with the sort of deal he gets at his beloved Footscray Best Kebab House colouring his views profoundly. I beg, very much, to differ. Dukkah is a quite different sort of place and the quality – especially of the meats – is above that of the majority of kebab shops. And the combined regular cost of our dishes from the menu would be $54. No such quibbling is possible with the Dukkah desserts – and we try both. Om ali – puff pastry pudding with coconut, cinnamon milk, hazelnut and sultanas served in a tagine – is the Egyptian version of bread-and-butter. It’s wonderful, rich, quite heavy. This beauty – which could easily serve two – clocks in at a very cheap $12. Kunafa (layers of shredded angel hair pastry, mango and cream topped with pistachio dust and rose petals) is lighter, a good deal more playful – and just as tasty. It, too, is priced keenly at $11. Police plan major road blitz during Easter Operation Nexus is a statewide police road operation during Easter. It aims to increase driver awareness and journey planning, while reducing road trauma during this high-risk time. This five-day campaign will run from Thursday, April 18 to Monday, April 22. Road Policing Advisor Sergeant Marty Wallace says this operation will be conducted throughout all operational police regions and police service areas during the five days, using all available personnel from local road policing units, general duties and other regional resources. Victoria Police will implement a strategically co-ordinated and tactically focused approach to road policing targeting the key contributing factors to road trauma: speed, alcohol and drug impairment, driver distraction, fatigue and seatbelts. “Drivers are requested to plan their trip, be patient and ensure that they take at least a 15-minute break every two hours and not to drive if tired,” says Sergeant Wallace. “Drivers planning to travel during this period can expect to see an increase in vehicles on our major freeways and highways throughout the state. “Road trauma isn’t just about the people who die – it’s about the enormous impact on the community from the family members, to the emergency services workers who have to deal with these tragedies on a daily basis, and the police who have to deliver the devastating news to loved ones. “All of the community has a responsibility and a role to play in reducing road trauma.” RoadSafe Westgate community road safety council chair Jim Giddings says it has been demonstrated time after time that speed is a contributing factor in most road crashes. “Speeding affects both the risk of a crash happening and the severity of injuries sustained when a crash does happen,” Mr Giddings states.

A celebration of Aussie war nurses April 25th 2019
Ever since the first nurses sailed for the Boer War in 1900, Australian nurses have served in theatres of war and conflict around the world. They have worked in hazardous conditions, endured extreme discomfort, and sometimes lost their lives. Forty-three nurses served as part of the Australian Army’s involvement in Vietnam between 1966 and 1972. Service nurses were also involved in the evacuation of casualties back to Australia. Terrie Ross was one of the first four army nurses to be deployed to Vietnam. “I worked then with a darling old nurse called Nora Marmont,” she says. “I knew she’d worked on a hospital train in Japan during the Korean War. “One day Marmie said to me: ‘Young Terrie, you have to leave; if you don’t, you’ll end up here with five babies and you’ll have been nowhere and seen nothing. Go join the army’, she said. And so I did.” It was May 1965 and Lieutenant Terrie Ross headed off to join the staff of the No.2 Military Hospital at Ingleburn, just outside Sydney.
“conditions weren’t great and the boys were so young” In Vietnam, things were just starting to get ‘interesting’. The US had committed 200,000 troops to the conflict; the Australian government was just about to deploy the 1st Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment; and the first National Service conscription ballot had just been drawn. By August 1966, after the Battle of Long Tan, one of Australia’s heaviest actions of the war, the need for expanded medical facilities became obvious. With just a few weeks to prepare, and sworn to secrecy, young Terrie Ross was deployed to the 8th Field Ambulance unit in Vung Tau. Terrie has plenty of fond memories of her time in Vietnam. “Don’t get me wrong, it was hard work. We’d work 10-hour shifts, six days a week, the conditions weren’t great and the boys were so young, and some of the things you’d see…” she says. “But it was exciting, and we learnt so much. There wasn’t much chance to look after patients with malaria or bomb injuries or shrapnel wounds back in the wards at home.” She remembers one patient who’d been hit by direct rocket fire during the Battle of Suoi Chau Pha. Six Australians had been killed and another 20 wounded. She was on duty in the intensive care unit when he was wheeled in after several hours of emergency surgery. “He was so sick,” she says, “I was trying to keep him comfortable and get him off to sleep, but he was worried he would never wake up if he did. But he said he would go to sleep if I stayed with him. “I did have a date that night,” she laughs, remembering it now. “But I said, ‘You’re on’, and I sat with him for hours and when he woke up he knew he’d be OK.”

The tide appears to have turned in favour of first-home buyers

Australia’s property markets are changing and in most capital cities the long path to purchase has become that little bit shorter. That’s news that will be welcomed by would-be first-home buyers faced with the difficult financial hurdle of saving a lump sum deposit amid rising living costs and low wages growth. With buyer urgency having largely dissipated in most cities, prospective first-home buyers can focus on building a savings plan to gain entry into previously competitive markets. The Domain First-Home Buyers Report identifies Melbourne areas that offer the lowest entry prices and quickest paths to purchase – go to domain.com.au for full breakdown of all Australian capitals. Melbourne is the second-most expensive city to purchase an entry level home and has the second-longest path to purchase, behind Sydney. Even though it remains a challenging market, the tide appears to have turned in favour of first-home buyers. Prospective first-home buyers will be saving for five years and nine months to achieve an entry-level house deposit and four years for an entry-level unit, shaving off two months compared to this time last year. Softer housing market conditions have more broadly filtered down across the market. Melbourne has one of the largest differences between property types among capitals, with an entry-price differential of $173,000. It takes an additional 21 months to save for an entry-level house instead of a unit. The percentage difference between entry house and unit prices is at an all-time high, with high levels of
development completions serving to contain unit prices relative to houses. Prospective buyers seeking quicker market access will need to look to the city’s edge. The west offers the shortest path to purchase, along with the north-west. Buyers need to look towards Melton-Bacchus
Marsh, Wyndham or Sunbury, which have the shortest saving time for entry-level houses at four years and six months, four years and 11 months and four years and 10 months respectively. For buyers seeking affordable housing closer to the CBD, the suburbs of Essendon
and Maribyrnong have a savings time of three years and seven months for a unit. This is an edited version of a story on domain.com.au by Dr Nicola Powell, senior research analyst.

This cute block-fronted Victorian has been snazzed up to meet today’s needs but retains high strapped ceilings, deep skirts, boarded walls and ceilings and three fireplaces. Both fitted and charming bedrooms along the entry hall have fireplaces stripped back to exposed bricks, while the bathroom down the back is light and bright, with a walk-in shower. It neighbours a cupboard laundry. The living domain, with floorboards, has a fireplace of exposed bricks facing the open-plan lounge room; the other side of this is the dining area and kitchen. Clerestory windows in the lounge room emphasise the rise of the ceiling, while charcoal roman blinds dress other windows. The U-shaped kitchen has grey stone benches, white subway splashback tiles and an underbench oven and gas cooktop. A rear deck and gardens are north-facing.
This well-maintained unit, in a sought-after pocket within a walk of schools, train station, shops and cafes, offers a great start for a young couple and/or city commuters – Southbank is reached in 20 minutes by car. Floating floorboards are laid in the spacious living domain which opens to a delightful deck and gardens. The tiled kitchen, with abundant storage and brekkie bench, has a dishwasher and underbench oven and gas cooktop. Grey-carpeted bedrooms have built-in robes and share a bathroom with shower and separate tub. The property also has ducted heating, multiple ceiling fans, and a garage plus off-street parking for second vehicle.

WILLIAMSTOWN 8 Pearson Street, 3016 Williams Real Estate: 9397 2000
Price: $1.15 million – $1.2 million
One of Williamstown’s many fab period dwellings, this completely revamped Edwardian satisfies the widespread millennial itch for both en pointe contemporary and century-old romance. In support of the romance factor are high ceilings, picture rails, a corbelled arch, timber (white-painted) dado panels and leadlight features. Wall paint is crisp white, carpet in bedrooms is grey, floorboards anchor living spaces, and boarded wall accents are positioned for maximum decor impact. One of those boarded walls is in a bedroom off the living hub. Others along

the entry hall include one with serene blue-green wall paint and white plantation shutters; the other with apple-green walls, designer accent wallpaper and white plantation shutters. They share two bathrooms, the main with stunning full tiling, matte-black tapware, floating vanity and walk-in shower. The other, accessed from both bedroom and rear brick patio, is stylishly treated with subway tiling, walk-in shower, boarded wall accent and enclosed toilet, as well as laundry facilities. An open study is also along the hallway, before the open-plan living domain
emerges. One zone is a charming lounge room with leadlight window and designer lightfitting (among others); the other, abutting the kitchen, is the dining area with another designer wallpaper accent. Under a gently angled ceiling, the kitchen has matte-black tapware and sink – matching the cabinetry – and timber benches, as well as a cooker under a matte-black canopy rangehood. Ducted heating and evaporative cooling offset the seaside climate. Multi-paned french doors, as well as a cute reclaimed slider, open to the patio, around which runs a timber deck with

a large wooden seat on which to plonk cushions. The space is intimate but big enough for a family gathering – and, because it fills the backyard, the mower can be stowed. Adding to undoubted attractions, the pretty house (with that gorgeous blue front door) is in a top spot: a three-minute saunter from the Strand and Bay Trail West; four-minute drive from Nelson Place eateries; and five schools, including sought-after Williamstown High School, less than one kilometre away. SPORT Bombers bounce back – but there’s still work to do
Braybrook coach Jason Hamilton was not totally satisfied, despite his side’s breakthrough win. (Marco De Luca)
After a shocking opening round derailment in which it conceded 169 points in a 79-point loss to Tarneit, Braybrook appears to be back on track. The Bombers notched up their first Western Region Football League division 3 victory on Saturday. They had to work hard for a 36-point victory over Wyndham Suns on the road at Goddard Street Reserve. While obviously pleased to get into the winners’ circle, Bombers’ coach Jason Hamilton stopped short of saying his team is officially back. “I’m still not entirely happy,” he said. “We’ll take the four points though, that’s for sure.” The Bombers were not disciplined to their structures and might have been punished on another day. Having gone out on a limb and stated that a grand final appearance was a pass mark, the Bombers have big expectations.
“We weren’t up to our normal silky self again,” Hamilton said. “We were a bit undisciplined in some areas of the game.” But Hamilton has a strong belief in Braybrook’s list this season. He would not make such big statements about the Bombers’ ability to be contenders if not. “We need to put in some hard work and just have to iron out a few little issues, but I’m still really positive,” Hamilton said. “At lot of people had a go at us when we said our goal for the year is to make the grand final, but we’re still on track. “I’m pretty confident we can play a big part at the end of the year.” There were some positive signs in the win over Wyndham. Forward Paul Cutajar-Milosev was back to his imposing best with seven goals. “His goals were very telling in the end,” Hamilton said.
Defenders Aidan O’Rafferty and David May came up big when Wyndham had a roll on. “There were a lot of other blokes who were handy contributors, but those three stood out,” Hamilton said. Nathan Smith was a strong finisher for Braybrook with four goals. He has kicked nine goals in two games. Braybrook will host consecutive blockbuster games in the next two weeks. On Good Friday, it will face a rejuvenated Laverton at Pennell Reserve, while at the same venue on Anzac Day, Albanvale will pay it a visit. “It’s a great honour to play on Good Friday and Anzac Day,” Hamilton said. “It doesn’t happen in local footy too much so we’re looking forward to it. “I’m sure we’ll have a lot of other teams coming down to have a look. “It should be a good crowd for both games.” Lance Jenkinson
Altona leads from the back By Lance Jenkinson Defence is the strength of Altona and that will not change in the foreseeable future. The Vikings are renowned stingy operators in the Western Region Football League division 1 and coach Saade Ghazi wants that reputation to remain intact. A narrow one-point loss to Werribee Districts in a low scoring game at J.K. Grant Reserve on Saturday will not change Ghazi’s thinking that his side’s elite defence will eventually take the Vikings to the promised land. Asked if they needed to up their scoring in 2019, Ghazi was dismissive that it would take over as a priority. “We’re defensively strong as a group,” Ghazi said. “If you’re only conceding 60 points in a game, you’re going to give yourself an opportunity to win. “We’re not a side that is going to allow a side to kick 15 goals and we kick 20. “We don’t play like that. “We play good team defence and when you do that, you’re not going to score as heavy.” Altona was in a winning position at three-quarter time. The Vikings led Werribee Districts by 10 points and looked set to record their second straight victory. With a slight breeze favouring the visitors in the last quarter, Werribee Districts finished the stronger with three goals to one in the last quarter. While disappointed to let the lead slip, Ghazi was pleased with the performance of his side. “It was a good quality game that could’ve gone either way,” he said. “Unfortunately we were the ones who were behind by one point at the end of it all.” Altona had its chances to build an unassailable lead. Patrick Rose, usually the Vikings sharpshooter, had the radar off with 3.6. “He won his position, but another goal or two would’ve been handy, especially when you look at the margin in the end,” Ghazi said. A focus for Altona in the off season was to get away from the ‘Paddy-whack’ strategy of Rose having to kick the bulk of the team’s score. Rose was the leading goalkicker in the competition with 81 last season and will continue to be a focal point, but the Vikings
are looking for a more even spread, which is what they got in a round one win over Hoppers Crossing when the star forward went goalless. “You’ve got to get better from last year and one thing we’ve identified is we’ve got to spread our goalkickers amongst the group,” Ghazi said. Ghazi is not too concerned about the loss to Werribee Districts, but is on high alert about the response. With tough matches against Spotswood and Deer Park in the next two rounds, the Vikings do not want to fall behind the win-loss ledger. “We’re 1-1 and it’s not a bad start,” Ghazi said. “You want to stay ahead of the ledger in wins and losses.” The next fortnight of matches might strike fear into some clubs, but not Altona. The Vikings are in a premiership window and make no secret of the fact they see every game as winnable. “We’re in a position now and it’s been like that for 12 months where we expect to win every week,” Ghazi said. “That might sound greedy, but that’s where we are as a footy club now.” Ghazi was full of praise for the defensive efforts of Kelly Pickard, Lee Spiteri and Jayden Post in the loss to Werribee Districts. Jordan Robbins was best for the Vikings for his tireless work at the stoppages and threat he posed up forward. Aside from a Good Friday game between Braybrook and Laverton at Pennell Reserve, the WRFL will have a week’s break over Easter. Meanwhile, Brownlow medallist Adam Cooney kicked a goal on debut in Spotswood’s 166-point annihilation of Albion. Wayne Patak and Dylan Callard kicked four goals apiece for the Woodsmen. In division 2, Parkside made it two-from-two with a 28-point victory over North Footscray. Brent Kelly is the form forward in the competition with his six goals for the victorious Magpies taking his tally to 13 in two games. Newport enjoyed a hard-fought eight-point win over West Footscray, sparked by four goals from Mahmoud El-Hawli. Yarraville Seddon survived a scare to beat newly promoted Point Cook Centrals by six points. In division 3, Laverton suffered a 39-point loss to Tarneit.

Seagulls flying with a perfect start to the season Williamstown was not fooled by Frankston’s game of keepings-off during a 72-point win in the Victorian Football League at Skybus Stadium on Sunday. The Seagulls did not overplay their hand, preferring to sit patiently and wait for the high possession Dolphins to make a mistake before pouncing to launch their own attack. It was a defensive master class from the Seagulls, who were ready to apply pressure when the opportunity presented. The Seagulls were so well structured that even the careful approach of the Dolphins could not break it down. “Their game style was really about controlling the ball,” Seagulls coach Andrew Collins said. “There was a lot of short kicking from the opposition and that’s really hard to defend. “We needed to be really good with our pressure to cause turnovers and it’s a real credit to the boys that they did that. “When we caused the turnovers we went pretty direct.”
Williamstown was lethal going inside 50. The Seagulls scored from 58 per cent of their 46 entries to finish with 18.9. Nick Rodda led the way for Williamstown with five goals. Joel Ottavi, a forward and second ruck, kicked three goals, as did Sam Dunell, who was the conduit between the midfield and forward lines. A pair of new recruits really impressed. Mitch Hibberd, who played four games in the AFL with North Melbourne before he was delisted last season, scooped best-on-ground honours. Hibberd was a contested ball bull en route to 25 disposals and three tackles. “He was really strong around the ball,” Collins said. “He had about 10 contested possessions.” Ben Kennedy was the other recruit to shine in a similar role to Hibberd. Kennedy had two goals to go with 21 disposals and inspired his teammates with his
tough acts towards winning the ball. Nick Meese did what you expect to see from a big man. The ruckman got the lion’s share of hit-outs with 30 and followed up his work with 11 possessions and six tackles. “He’s so strong and so good at his craft and we get great benefits from that,” Collins said. Sam Martyn recorded a game-high eight tackles for the Seagulls. Williamstown is 2-0 to start the season, but importantly Collins is seeing steady improvement from a team with a lot of new parts. The Seagulls will get to see how far they have come since their pre-season loss to Sandringham when the two sides square off at Trevor Barker Beach Oval on Easter Sunday. Meanwhile, Footscray also improved to 2-0 after a 72-point hammering of Collingwood at Olympic Park Oval. Lance Jenkinson

By Lance Jenkinson Altona Magic is fast evolving into a contender in the National Premier League. The newly promoted Magic is not content to be merely making up the numbers in their season in the top flight. The Magic is one of the form teams of the competition, rising up to fourth on the ladder with 16 points from nine games. A 4-1 demolition of Dandenong City on the road at the Frank Holohan Soccer Complex on Friday night was their second consecutive victory after an eye-catching 3-0 win over finals contenders Bentleigh Greens a week earlier. Magic coach Goran Lozanovski is pleased with how his side responded after a hammering from Heidelberg United three weeks ago. “We obviously had an average performance against Heidelberg, but backed up with a win against Bentleigh Greens and Dandy City, so it’s been a good couple of weeks,” he said. Altona Magic came out breathing fire under lights against Dandenong City. With a parochial home crowd and a host that was in a results rut, the Magic needed to set the tone and could not have asked for a better start than a goal from Michiel Hemmen after just two minutes. The Magic’s lead was doubled on 13 minutes when captain Troy Ruthven scored from the penalty spot. They held a comfortable a 3-0 advantage after just 31 minutes when Sami Nour tapped in for his second goal in as many weeks. “It’s good to get yourself off to a good start and put yourself in a great position,” Lozanovski said. “We probably should’ve even blown it out a bit more than we did.” If there were any doubts for the Altona Magic, they evaporated after a fourth goal early in the second half to Ross Archibald. It was an important goal for the Magic after star striker Hemmen succumbed to an ankle injury. Hemmen is likely to miss the Magic’s FFA Cup clash with Box Hill United on Friday night at Paisley Park and could miss further games in the NPL. Dandenong City trimmed the deficit through an impressive goal from Zac Thompson. However, the Magic’s three points were under lock and key long before Thompson’s strike. The key lesson from Altona Magic’s game is they can score goals and lots of them. Their 20 goals so far is second only to the rampaging Avondale, which has scored an incredible 28. However, Lozanovski is still yet to be convinced his side’s defence is functioning to its full potential, despite showing improved performances in the past two weeks.

Rugby League
Luck has not been on the side of the Altona Roosters in the opening three rounds of the NRL Victoria first grade. The Roosters have lost all three games, two coming by a try or less. They had a heartbreaking 18-16 loss to the Casey Warriors at Casey Fields on Saturday. In the women’s first grade, Altona Roosters were pummelled 36-4 by the Truganina Rabbitohs.
Netball
City West Falcons went toe-to-toe with Geelong Cougars for the first time since they met in last year’s Victorian Netball League championship grand final. The Falcons won in a tight and tense battle on that occasion and history repeated on Wednesday night with the Falcons emerging with a 62-56 win in a similarly hard-fought encounter at the State Netball and Hockey Centre.
Basketball
Ross Archibald scored his second goal of the season for Altona Magic (Shawn Smits)
“We’re heading in the right direction in an attacking sense,” he said. “Defensively, we’re a little bit more sound the past couple of weeks, but generally we’re leaking more goals than what we want to. “I think we’ve learned that the last couple of months and we need to be better at that and a little more consistent.” Altona Magic has set its sights on a deep run in the FFA Cup.
42 MARIBYRNONG & HOBSONS BAY STAR WEEKLY \ APRIL 17, 2019
The Magic was disappointed to fall short of the round of 32 last season and will be prioritising a win over Box Hill United. “This year we want to go a step better,” Lozanovski said. “It’s nice to either get a game in the cup at home or even travel interstate. “It [a round of 32 appearance] puts the club on the map and gets us heading in the right direction.”
Altona Gators produced a spirited showing on the toughest road trip in the Big V basketball men’s division 2, but it could not find a way to upset the Mildura Heat. The undefeated Heat kept the Gators at bay all night to record a 99-83 victory. Nathanael Coory and James Till had massive games for Altona, but could not drag their side over the line.
