Rent rise fear for families ‘‘

levels of housing stress experienced by vulnerable families. “A family with two children receiving Newstart, an income of $793, and renting a three-bedroom house in Keilor pays more than 44 per cent of their income just to put a roof over their heads,” she said. “Affordable private housing is hard to find, badly maintained and expensive to heat.” Brad Teal director Brad Teal said a generational change was occurring in Keilor. “It’s the end of the generational cycles where people are moving out of homes and putting them on the rental market for the first time,” he said. “There are rental opportunities on big blocks that have a potential future of being knocked down and rebuilt.” – Domain with Goya Dmytryshchak

Hope’s helping hand in Newport The outpouring of support following the Christchurch shooting has restored hope in humanity, says Mariam Khodr of the Australian Islamic Centre. She has organised a family day at the Newport centre to “continue strengthening our relationship with each other”. “The purpose of the event is to promote unity and give parents and children an enjoyable day out these school holidays,” Ms Khodr said. “There’ll be rides, food trucks, entertainment and a haka performance to commemorate the lives lost in the Christchurch terror attacks.” The event will be on Sunday, April 7, from 11am-5pm at the Australian Islamic Centre, 23-27 Blenheim Road, Newport. Rents in some traditionally affordable Melbourne suburbs have increased at the same rate as some of the city’s most prestigious in the past year, sparking alarm from advocates who fear increased rental stress among families. Median weekly rents increased by 15 per cent in Keilor ($400 to $460 a week) in the past year compared with 5.6 per cent in Craigieburn ($360 to $380) and 6.3 per cent in Williamstown (from $480 to $510). Rents in the same period in Malvern increased by 7.6 per cent and by 7.5 per cent in Albert Park and Middle Park. Inner-city rents, on the other hand, have declined the most amid Melbourne’s cooling house prices, new Department of Health and Human Services figures show. In the past five years, Yarraville and Seddon experienced rent increases of 20.8 per cent ($385 to $465 a week), overtaking suburbs such as Ivanhoe on 20.3 per cent ($385 to $463). Greg Hocking Elly Partners director Wayne Elly said the inner-west rises were driven by people wanting to live near the city and banks tightening lending. “Yarraville and Seddon … because of the proximity to the city, and obviously in the last 12 months, as finance has gotten a little bit harder to obtain and the urgency of the property market’s dropped off a little bit about purchasing, more people have gone towards the rental market in the short term,” he said. “For the Williamstown market, rents generally jump when prices stabilise because less people are buying.” Traditionally affordable Werribee

and Hoppers Crossing recorded 24.1 per cent rent growth ($290 to $360). That growth in prices is behind only Thornbury and Armadale, the department’s December, 2018, Rental Report shows. Keilor’s 15 per cent growth in the past year was particularly stark given its five-year growth from 2013 to 2018 of 21.7 per cent was the sixth highest across the city. Tenants Victoria policy officer Natalie Rutherford said the sharp rise in rents in fringe areas increased the

Inferno clean-up drags on By Benjamin Millar A toxic chemical cocktail remains at a Tottenham warehouse seven months after last year’s inferno. Work is only just beginning on the excavation of at least 500 cubic metres of contaminated sediment from a 600-metre section of Stony Creek. Melbourne Water is diverting the creek via a pipe while excavators dig out toxic sludge built up between the fire site and Paramount Road. The contaminated sediment is being

temporarily stockpiled at the fire site ahead of future disposal to a secure landfill. Maribyrnong council, the lead authority in the wake of the fire, directed questions on the clean-up of the fire site to the Environment Protection Authority. An EPA spokesman said the owners of the fire site had been issued a number of statutory notices requiring them to install security fences and ensure controls are in place so no further run-off can enter stormwater drains. But work is yet to get underway on the massive clean-up of the toxic mess left after the

suspicious fire tore through the warehouse, igniting thousands of drums of illegally stored chemicals. The EPA spokesman said preliminary assessment work was underway at the site. He did not respond to questions regarding a proposed timeline for the work or what steps could be taken to force the site to be cleaned up if no action was taken. EPA testing of creek water and sediment samples taken on February 15 showed improved Stony Creek water quality, but poor results in terms of creek sediments, with

high concentrations of chemicals including hydrocarbons. Inner-west residents have continued to complain of poor health in the wake of the fire and expressed frustration at the time being taken for clean-up efforts. Maribyrnong chief executive Stephen Wall said a new Stakeholder Advisory Group was monitoring recovery actions and highlighting areas of unmet need. He said the council would pursue the state government to cover the costs of dealing with the fire’s aftermath.

Pets with cat-titude Here’s the purr-fect opportunity to get a cute portrait of your cat and also raise funds for a good cause. The Cat Napping Suburban Retreat, which is based in Spotswood, Ravenhall, Hoppers Crossing and Tullamarine, will host Easter Bunny Photos with Cats sessions at two of its locations this week. Cat Napping founder Ebony Centazzo said she had organised the Easter-themed photo sessions to raise funds for Cat People

of Melbourne, a volunteer-run organisation which fosters felines, rehomes them and advocates for cat welfare. Ms Centazzo said she first heard about Cat People of Melbourne when she posted on her business’ Facebook page, asking if any rescue groups needed some new bedding. “The following weekend I saw they rescued 20 cats … so I thought they would love some extra support.” Ms Centazzo said the photo sessions would

involve one of her team members dressed up as the Easter rabbit, who would pose with cats. The photo sessions will be held from 11am-2pm on Saturday at 455 Old Geelong Road, Hoppers Crossing and 11am-2pm on Sunday at 2/25 Lillee Crescent, Tullamarine. Cost: a cat food donation to Cat People of Melbourne. Bookings required, 8360 3313.

Maribyrnong councillors have taken a swipe at former state planning minister Matthew Guy for the “extremely damaging decisions” he made while he held planning powers. Maribyrnong council last week rejected a proposal to add an additional level to the 13-storey building approved in 2012 on the former Belgravia Hotel site on the corner of Nicholson and Buckley streets. The application received 14 objections, with nine from the adjacent 232 Nicholson Street building. Mayor Martin Zakharov told last week’s city development meeting the plan was inappropriate as it exceeds the area’s preferred height, the setbacks are too small and the parking shortfall would have an unreasonable impact on Nicholson Street. “We are talking at least three stories too high… so even 10 storeys is overkill,” he said. “We are talking about the destruction of a heritage building to build this thing in the first place … it is one of the many extremely damaging decisions that Matthew Guy made.” Cr Zakharov said the council “would be making that entire street considerably worse” by allowing 14 storeys on it. Cr Sarah Carter said the “offensive development” does nothing for the area. She said it was unfortunate Mr Guy had granted approval to the initial proposal, labelling him as “one of the most inept planning ministers in all of the state’s history”. “He’s got a lot to answer for … we’ve been cleaning up his mess for some time.” Benjamin Millar

A MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR

OUT AND ABOUT

There is so much to explore in our beautiful City and several events to tempt you outdoors. This includes Melbourne International Comedy Festival events, the Eat Drink Westside program of events and much more. As you move around our City, you may notice that we are working towards making our streets safer with the staggered introduction of 40km an hour speed limits on Council owned roads.

1

2

4

We want all members of our community to feel safe when using our roads and by lowering the speed limit, it will reduce the risk of injury and fatality and encourage more people to walk and ride. Seddon and Yarraville will be the first of seven areas across the City that will have reduced speed limits introduced over the next few years, visit our website for more information. We were also successful in our bid to improve road safety in the Barkly Village precinct in West Footscray. We will use a $205,000 VicRoads grant to install a number of speed humps and raised intersections – also known as traffic calming devices, to make the area safer for all road users. With the state budget announcement around the corner, I hope there is more in store for sustainable transport options around the City which will encourage more residents to walk or ride.

Maribyrnong City Council’s Councillors have been busy. 1. No love for station

Builders fined for killing trees

By Goya Dmytryshchak It has no toilets, some people have given up trying to find a carpark there and the rain blows straight into the so-called shelter on the platform. Aircraft station at Laverton has been ranked as either the worst or second worst in Victoria since 2015 in the RACV’s biennial On Track survey. In 2015, the station was ranked the state’s worst with a rating of 4.86 out of 10. In 2017, commuters disliked Aircraft even more and its rating fell to 4.20. It only dropped its worst-place ranking because Donnybrook was rated more poorly. RACV senior planner Stuart Outhred said this year commuters were asked to have their say on how the station can be fixed. “The concerns already identified through the On Track survey included security fears, problems accessing a station or finding a car park, overcrowded trains and poor connections to other transport networks,” he said. “It is only through the input of the people who use these facilities … that we can gain a true picture of what the problems are.” Aircraft’s main issues identified in the last survey were lack of toilets, difficulty finding a carpark and inadequate shelter and seating. Cath Stephensen uses the station five days a week and said she had given up trying to get a park at the station. “Because of the traffic congestion on Point Cook Road and because of the lack of car parking facilities at the station, I choose to walk or to cycle to the station,” she said. “Walking onto the platform is just like something out of the 1920s. The footpath’s broken, it’s very narrow, the railings either side of the footpath are inadequate and inappropriate.

A developer and its contractors will pay more than $62,000 in fines and costs for irreparably damaging five trees at the former Port Phillip Woollen Mill site in Williamstown. Hobsons Bay council last week issued 10 infringement notices to AVJennings Waterline Place and its contractors G & S Fortunato for damaging the root systems of five trees during construction at the Waterline Place development in Kanowna Street. The four elms and one plane tree cannot be saved and will be removed in coming weeks. Hobsons Bay mayor Jonathon Marsden said the trees would be replaced with six-metre elms and 11 further trees would be planted. “Council officers have conducted interviews with AVJennings Waterline Place and G & S Fortunato and they readily admit that they did the wrong thing,” he said. “They have taken full responsibility for their actions and have been more than co-operative in coming to a resolution that will address their wrongdoings.” AVJennings general manager Joanne Furlong apologised for the breach, which she said should not have happened. “We want to say sorry to the Williamstown community for the loss of these trees,” she said. “The damage to the roots was accidental and we are disappointed the trees could not be saved.”

Stuart Outhred at Aircraft station. (Joe Mastroianni)

“I lock my bike to the fence … there’s just no bike security. “There’s no toilet facilities on the station – you have to go into the shopping centre. “There is completely inadequate shelter – there is one little box and the rain actually blows into it.”

NEWS

Hobsons Bay councillor Colleen Gates said the council wants the state government to fund improvements at Aircraft as part of the level crossing removal. People can take the survey via the RACV Facebook page or website at www.racv.com.au/ fix-my-station.html

Water ways celebrated The west’s biggest celebration of contemporary indigenous arts and culture will be held on the banks of the Maribyrnong River this Saturday. Wominjeka Festival, a free Kulin cultural event at Footscray Community Arts Centre, will feature ceremonies, exhibitions, conversations and film screenings that explore indigenous peoples’ connections to water. N’Arweet Carolyn Briggs, elder-in-residence at FCAC, said the stories of Victoria’s waterways were about resilience, survival and genealogy. “The people of the Kulin connected through river courses and harnessed water for their survival, using water as a trade route,” she said. “It was also about the migration and networks of families living along those riverways.”

Uncle Larry Walsh said the Ngargee (a gathering for celebration) would revisit the relationship between youth and elders. “It is a time when the Kulin Nations come together so that we can invite other people to come to respect and honour the work that has been made by our artists,” he said. “In programming the festival, we strive for a blend of the younger and the established and a relationship between the two, so the more senior artists can give the young ones a hand.” Wominjeka Festival 2019 will be run from 12.30-9.30pm this Saturday at FCAC. Tree’s story a unifying message By Goya Dmytryshchak The story of an ancient sheoak in Williamstown – significant to the Boonwurrung indigenous people and known as The Message Tree to European settlers – is being brought to life. Indigenous community members, historians and police are searching for descendants of historical figures who tried to save the tree, which stood at the foot of Thompson Street between the Old Customs House and Williamstown police station. The tree was used by Europeans to post messages and share news, while the Boonwurrung conducted formal ceremonies at the site. The Message Tree project is being led by Williamstown police and Hobsons Bay reconcilation group Get Up Out West, who have partnered with consultant company Yalukit Marnang, owned by descendants of the Boonwurrung. Yalukit Marnang’s Greg Thorpe said the tree stood in Nelson Place until 1856, when it was removed to build the roadway. Local residents fought to save the tree, partly because of its ancient association as a ceremonial place for the first people of Hobsons Bay, the Yalukit willam clan of the Boonwurrung language group. “This story is important to Boonwurrung people who want to meet the descendants of those who fought to save the tree or record its history,” Mr Thorpe said. “The project is really about rediscovering a story about a tree that was special to the Boonwurrung people and then it was special to the first colonists in Williamstown. “In 1856, in the first year of Williamstown council, it was removed to make way for Nelson Place to be built.

Rosa McKenna, Acting Senior Sergeant Glyn Woolley, Greg Thorpe, Senior Sergeant Chris Allen and Aboriginal Community Liaison Officer Keith Randall are appealing for descendants of historical figures associated with “The Message Tree”. (Damjan Janevski)

“One of things that comes out in the history very strongly is that one of the things that’s valued about the tree by the colonists is its strong association and connection to the Boonwurrung people.” Senior Sergeant Chris Allen of Williamstown police said the story, which unfolded virtually on the station’s doorstep, struck a chord.

Dynon Road enters a new cycle By Benjamin Millar A key link between Footscray and the CBD will soon be safer for cyclists under a $4.8 million upgrade now underway. Work began last week on the construction of new paths for cyclists and pedestrians along the northern side of Dynon Road. A two-way cycling path and a footpath will be built between Maribyrnong Street and Kensington Road, while a new shared path will continue to Highett Street and connect with

an existing shared path to North Melbourne. Other improvements will include raised pedestrian crossings at the Maribyrnong and Sims street intersections, signals at Maribyrnong Street, new line marking, green pavement at intersections and extended kerbs. Footscray MP Katie Hall said the work would improve safety for cyclists and pedestrians. “It’s projects like this that encourage people to get on the bike, reducing congestion and helping people stay active and healthy,” she said.

BikeWest spokesman John Symons said the work was welcome, but key safety gaps remained between the rest of Footscray and the work being done. “If there are gaps in the network there is a major disincentive for people,” he said. “You need to give them that certainty there will be a safe route or they are simply not going to do it.” VicRoads has warned motorists to expect delays on Dynon Road with one in-bound lane closed while the work is carried out.

Working on working out Up to 1000 people are expected to attend the biggest boot camp in Melbourne’s west, which was spurred by high levels of stress in the transport industry. Westgate Gym at Altona North is holding the event to raise awareness of depression and anxiety and funds for Beyond Blue. Gym owner Martin Williams said mental health was an important issue in the area as it has many transport and logistics workers. “[With] the high level of stress in the transport industry, long hours, it’s kind of a dangerous field,” he said. “We’ve got all the major transport industries this way; it’s more a heavily male-dominated factory industry. “Beyond Blue recognises the male stress and anxiety that can play a part.” Mr Williams said working out was a way for many to improve mind health. “When you’re training and you’re enjoying the training environment, it becomes a part

of your lifestyle and it’s a really great form of escape,” he said. “We find a lot of members here are very structured in the way they train and their dedication to their training, and it becomes an integral part of their life. “It’s an integral part of both your mental approach to life and your physical ability to be able to cope.” The boot camp is on May 4 from 7.30am, with a second morning session planned if the event gets too big. Tickets are pre-purchase and sponsors are being sought. For more information visit the Westgate Gym Facebook page. Locals call for hall funds

Concern over lane removal

By Goya Dmytryshchak Brooklyn residents are calling for a greater portion of the $5 million Hobsons Bay council received from the state government as part of the West Gate Tunnel project to be spent in their suburb. Brooklyn Residents Action Group (BRAG) president Bert Boere said the suburb would be one of the worst affected by increased truck traffic and associated noise and air pollution yet only $500,000 has been allocated to the community. In December 2017, the council secured $5 million funding. It will allocate $2.25 million to Donald McLean Reserve at Spotswood, $2.25 million to W.L.J. Crofts Reserve at Altona North and $500,000 to three Brooklyn reserves. “Sporting bodies in Altona North and Spotswood are to receive the bulk of the $5 million while only $500,000 is to be allocated to the affected community in Brooklyn,” Mr Boere said. “This does not seem at all fair. “The Brooklyn Hall, which was built from funds largely raised by the Brooklyn community in the mid-1960s … is not of a standard that is acceptable when comparing it to other areas in Hobsons Bay with similar facilities. “Brooklyn Hall should be demolished and an up-to-date community facility with childcare, health care and aged care developed to cater for the needs of the Brooklyn community, especially as Brooklyn is already recognised as, and continues to be, one of the most polluted areas in Australia.” Hobsons Bay mayor Jonathon Marsden said the funding had been allocated based on needs identified in 2017, when the West Gate Tunnel environmental effects statement was released.

Artist impressions of noise walls along the West Gate Tunnel corridor have revealed plans to remove one through-lane in Williamstown Road at the West Gate Freeway. For drivers travelling from Yarraville towards Williamstown, just before the freeway bridge there will be one lane heading straight, and two lanes veering right to enter the freeway (Geelong-bound). Better West – Spotswood South Kingsville Residents Group spokeswoman Rosa McKenna said removing one lane would be “diabolical”. “Because there are so many trucks turning onto the freeway, one lane is really insufficient because the trucks will back up to Francis Street,” she said. However, West Gate Tunnel Project spokesperson Kim Payne said the dedicated lane for southbound traffic would mean less congestion. “Traffic will move better through the Williamstown Road intersection at the West Gate Freeway with more lanes for vehicles turning onto the freeway in both directions, and a dedicated through-lane for vehicles travelling south,” she said. “The West Gate Tunnel Project will make the freeway move better and increase the number of lanes for people trying to get on the freeway.” Once drivers have travelled under the bridge, the single lane will transition into two lanes.

Laurie Bell and Bret Boere want action on the Brooklyn Community Hall. (Joe Mastroianni)

“At this time, Crofts Reserve in Altona North and Don McLean Reserve in Spotswood were due for significant upgrades, including new pavilions, sports grounds and lighting developments,” he said. “There has been $500,000 allocated from the $5 million funding pool towards further improvements

to Brooklyn, Rowan and Duane reserves in Brooklyn, with an additional $50,000 contributed by council. “We will continue to work with the Brooklyn community to investigate their needs and seek appropriate future funding and partnership opportunities for Brooklyn Community Hall.”

A legal legacy lives on

New chapter for libraries

By Ewen McRae The western suburbs legal fraternity was left shocked last year by the sudden death of magistrate Steve Myall, but his legacy is set to be celebrated through a new graduate program. Mr Myall was well known across the western suburbs as a magistrate in Sunshine and Werribee, as well as many years as a criminal lawyer. He was 59 when he died. The Steve Myall Graduate Program, for students completing legal studies in Melbourne’s west, was launched last week. The program will offer a work opportunity at Victoria Legal Aid’s Sunshine office for nine to 12 months while students complete post-graduate studies. Legal Aid managing lawyer Tamsin Mildenhall, who was mentored by Mr Myall, said it was a way of ensuring his memory lived on. “I wanted to do something that brought attention to the kind of things that I think he believed in and was proud of,” Ms Mildenhall said. “He provided a lot of mentoring for a lot of the lawyers here (Legal Aid). “He cared a lot about the clients, took his job really seriously, was very passionate about social justice and making sure that everyone had their day in court and was heard. He was known in our fraternity as someone who was very compassionate.” Ms Mildenhall said the graduate program would be a hands-on experience for the successful students, giving them the chance to get a foot in the door of the industry and complete vital training while completing their studies. “What I want is to pick up someone from the western suburbs, who might not have the

Four of Maribyrnong’s five libraries will need to expand to meet growing population pressures, a report has found. Maribyrnong libraries are already the fourth most visited in the state per capita, receiving 7.6 visits on average per resident. The council’s report Maribyrnong Libraries Plan 2019-2023 noted a total of 677,000 visits were made in 2017-18 across the five libraries at Footscray, Maribyrnong, West Footscray, Yarraville and Braybrook. Footscray library was by far the busiest with 323,000 visits and 332,000 loans per year. The council spent $3.6 million on library services at a cost of $5.95 per visit, coming in under the statewide average cost of $6.82. Of the 654,000 loans of physical and digital resources, 14 per cent were in one of 11 community languages. The report warned that four of Maribyrnong’s five libraries are likely to be ‘under-provided’ within five years. It noted the need to expand all of the libraries other than Braybrook, prioritising Footscray and Maribyrnong as those areas will soak up the bulk of the area’s 72 per cent predicted population growth by 2041. The council will explore options to develop a larger and more flexible Maribyrnong library on a new site when the current lease expires in 2028.

cultural capital that you usually need to get a job in the law,” she said. “A lot of students find it really difficult to get the necessary experience you need to be admitted, so this program would basically pay someone while they’re doing that final bit of study. And hopefully that gives them the

MY PLACE Newport’s Amal Abou-Eid is the author of My Muslim Mate, a book promoting harmony. She speaks with Goya Dmytryshchak. Tell me about My Muslim Mate?

What do you like about Newport?

When my son was four years old, he was in kindergarten and I was doing a diploma in early childhood education … I read a little bit about the philosophies of belonging, becoming and being. It was about putting out a resource that would allow children like my son to feel that they belong and to feel that they were proud and confident with who they were and what they were learning at home.

One of the main things that I like about Newport is the sense of community, the sense of togetherness. It’s been open and welcoming; I’ve been here nearly 10 years. I run a playgroup with the Arabic-speaking mums; I’m on a very prominent Facebook page in the inner west – and I’m very vocal on that … people have been very supportive of me and what I’ve been doing since day one. When my book was in its pre-sale stages, the support I was getting back then was the same as today and it’s been very, very good. You’ve got local cafes, you’ve got parks, you’ve got schools, you’ve got maternal child health services and toy libraries – it’s pretty much got everything. It’s almost like a city feel but a tiny version and it feels closer.

The community support has been overwhelming. We did expect a level of support, but the amount that turned up on the open day was unprecedented and unexpected. As horrific as the events were, what’s come of it that is really striking is the fact that hundreds and thousands of people around Victoria, people who’d never even probably heard of what a mosque is, turned up to one – took their shoes off and entered and felt comfortable in there and safe.

What don’t you like? The traffic is getting a little bit annoying, but that’s nothing I can change. That’s going to keep getting harder and harder. Do you have a favourite cafe or restaurant? I’ll give a shout out to Star Pizza on Mason Street.

(Damjan Janevski)

You were photographed holding your book in an embrace with federal Labor leader Bill Shorten at the Newport mosque open day following the Christchurch shooting. How do you feel about the show of support from the community?

New Homes Summus offers spectacular living in Maribyrnong. (Supplied}

Diverse designs, fabulous views Summus, a stunning new residential complex, is complete, offering a choice of three integrated dwelling options in one exhilarating inner-west location. Summus is encircled in a warm embrace by the Maribyrnong River and its attendant parklands and is just a block from Highpoint shopping centre. Victoria University is close, as are some of Melbourne’s finest and tastiest eateries. With the CBD just eight kilometres away and a tram stop 10 metres from the front entrance, it’s perfect for first homebuyers and downsizers – among many others. Accommodating 193 residents, Summus is made up of three distinct areas – townhouses, a mid-rise complex of eight storeys and a 15-level apartment tower. Exteriors incorporate a range of elements including natural timber, steel and glass in multi-tiered designs that define the different parts of the building while reflecting the diverse character of the local area. The townhouses are each set over two levels connected by staircases. They have private, decked courtyards. Kitchens have timber finishes, Caesarstone benchtops and sleek breakfast bars that are open to living areas. Bathrooms, finished in stone, glass and wood, have floating vanities and smart fittings, while

bedrooms have wool-blend carpets and each main has a generous en suite. The apartments are selling from $384,000 and, along with those luxury interiors, have tantalising views of the surrounding area and the city skyline. Penthouse apartments have their own landscaped open terraces. At the centre of the collection, a park with walkways, seating, lush greenery and mature trees gives residents a tranquil space to meet or

have a quiet read. A communal dining room can be booked for private functions. Orion International Group Head of Property Management and Marketing Russell Meerkin says that the complex has been attracting a great deal of interest. “Summus is one of Maribyrnong’s tallest towers and offers stunning views,” he says. “It offers light-filled designs with large open floor plans and generous balconies. “Approximately 90 per cent is settled, so the

first residents have already moved in.” The development has secure basement parking for cars and bicycles, and there is a central ground floor lobby with retail spaces. Summus, 2 Wests Road, Maribyrnong. Display suite opens 5.30-6.30pm Thursday and 10.30-11.30am Saturday. Inquiries: 0418 368 205 or summusapartments.com.au

On about 675 square metres in a popular tree-lined street, within a walk of Williamstown and St Mary’s primary schools, the waterfront and cafes and shops of Douglas Parade, Ferguson Street and Nelson Place, this is a place with a great future. It can be renovated, while perfectly comfortable as is, or replaced with a new build, STCA. It has three bedrooms and three bathrooms, plus living, dining (with fireplace) and family zones, with floorboards in most rooms and rich timber wall panelling and fireplace in the main living room. The kitchen, with oodles of timber cabinetry, has a dual-drawer dishwasher, wall oven and gas cooktop, as well as a breakfast bar for three. Bifolds open to decking that wraps around a glass-rimmed in-ground swimming pool, while a good-sized shed is tucked away in a corner. The property has a carport and ample off-street parking.

On a corner block within the Activity Centre Zone, this period dwelling is ripe for a makeover, but could also be demolished to make way for a dream home or commercial development, STCA. It’s a 12-minute drive from Docklands and within walking distance of Footscray station and other transport, as well as Footscray Market and multicultural eateries. The house has original floorboards, fireplaces, rosettes on high ceilings, picture rails and a corbelled arch. There are three bedrooms, a dining room, separate kitchen and backyard space for entertaining. Chock-full of potential, this property will attract savvy investors and renovators.

NEWpORT 33 River Street, 3015 Williams Real Estate: 9397 2000

Price: $1.3 million – $1.4 million

Replete with style, architectural elements and dollops of luxe, this appealing weatherboard is in a sought-after, tree-lined street within a stroll of the waterfront, cafes, schools and parks. Timber batons defining an open study and separation between kitchen and dining areas complement the European oak floorboards laid all through. Natural light beams in from large windows, particularly in the living hub where windows (including clerestories) wrap around a fab covered deck with recessed skylight and feature laser-cut screen. A glorious stone panel, with inset gas log fire, is flanked by lowboys below picture windows in the family sitting area – very nice. The slick kitchen in here has lavish seamless cabinetry, stone benches and a timber breakfast bar, as well as all mod-cons. Another living room behind a slider from the hub has a floor-level window framing garden views and a glass slider to the back garden. This room is ideal as rumpus, playroom or even fourth bedroom. Other fitted bedrooms are along the entry hall, including one with access to a second deck and the main with chic all-white en suite and french doors to front porch. The main bathroom is a swish affair, with designer tiling and free-standing tub. Also on offer are split-systems, evaporative cooling, in-floor ducted heating, double glazing, intercom system and off-street parking for one car. 20 MARIBYRNONG & HOBSONS BAY STAR WEEKLY \ APRIL 3, 2019

SEddON 14 Hotham Street, 3011 Ray White Seddon: 9191 1995

Price: $1.4 million – $1.5 million

Considered one of the jewels of the west, Seddon offers charismatic lifestyle elements, not least the sense of community. This Hotham Street address is wonderfully connected to Seddon’s assets. The train station ramp perches quite discreetly 70 metres away; and it’s a 12-minute drive to the city via West Gate. The buzzy eatery precincts of Gamon, Charles and Victoria streets are all in a five-minute meander, as is Harris Reserve Playground. It’s a short wander to Yarraville Gardens where markets are held; and if you’re a

Doggies’ fan, Whitten Oval is within a five-minute car zip. Now to the circa early-1960s brick-veneer house. It’s on a block of about 885 square metres – which makes it ripe for a subdivision or redevelopment, STCA, thus maximising the sterling location. However, the house has the right bones and proportions to respond well to a revamp and/or extension, so options are plentiful. And the large backyard faces north. A wide hallway provides entry to the house, while original glass double sliding

doors open to the lounge room (with ornate cornices) on the right. One of those effective old-school gas heaters, surrounded by tapestry brickwork, provides cosiness that spreads in here and to the adjacent kitchen, while a split-system is a year-round climate tamer. And a full-width window facing the street welcomes natural light. The kitchen is well big enough to set up an eight-seater table, and the Tasmanian oak cupboards offer lavish storage; there’s a gas upright cooker as well. Along the entry hall, the three bedrooms

continue with ornate cornices, while the bathroom (with timber vanity) occupies the era’s typical spot at hall’s end. An enclosed pergola/sunroom at the back has a laundry and toilet at one end. Fruit trees, including fig and lemon, dot the backyard, and a fence surrounds a vegie patch and shed/chicken coop. A driveway heads to a freestanding garage, and off-street parking is abundant. Tally-ho developers and savvy renovators, this one is ready for the hunt. Carole Levy 21 MARIBYRNONG & HOBSONS BAY STAR WEEKLY \ APRIL 3, 2019

FOOD REVIEW

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir finds a star achiever in Sunshine There are – I believe – three places serving the food of Afghanistan in Sunshine. Amid the (mostly) Vietnamese hubub around Sunshine central and Hampshire Road, they are easy to miss – and Afghan Star is perhaps the most anonymous of them. It looks, from the outside and inside both, like a humdrum takeaway joint of non-specific origins. You can get a pizza here – with pineapple, if that’s your kind of thing. The decor is utilitarian. But after sporadic visits over the recent couple of years, I reckon it’s time for a CTS story. Because I really do like this place. And if the review visit – with Bennie Weir and Nat Stockley in tow – doesn’t quite reach the heights of my previous (solo) visits, I nevertheless remain enamoured of Afghan Star. Here is less proper restaurant routine and more a place to grab some quick and very cheap Afghan food. There’s a range of stews/curries called qorma. I’ve tried a couple of them; they’re good. But really, the top action here is all about grilled meats. Though the flatbread is stupendously wonderful – it’s hot, freshly made and enormous. On each and every visit I have made to Afghan Star, I have taken at least half one of these home with me. And if I order charcoal chicken, I end up

AfghAn n St StAr reStA t urAnt tA Address: 251 Hampshire Road, Sunshine Phone: 0431 970 348 taking some of that home, too. Because a whole, excellent chook – with flatbread, some salady bits/pieces and a minty dipping sauce with a subtle yet important chilli kick – costs $14.99. The chicken is very, very good, best and most juicy/succulent on the bone, though inevitably a bit dry in the heart of the breast. That’s what the minty sauce is for. It’s a fine thing that there’s plenty of my chicken to go around, because Bennie is disappointed with his doner mix kebab platter ($10). For starters, he doesn’t believe it accurately reflects the colour photo at the serving counter upon which he’s based his selection. It’s OK – but amounts to HSP on a plate. Much better – and returning to the heart of the Afghan Star matter – is Nat’s mix kebab platter, another $14.99 steal served on rice and with the same flatbread, salad and sauce. The tikka/shish lamb meat is very tasty, though a tad on the dry/tough side. Just a tad … The kobida/kofta minced lamb meat is much better – chewy and nicely (mildly) seasoned. SPORT City West Falcons win a tough opener City West Falcons have started the Victorian Netball League championship season with a solid win. Facing a fellow finalist of last season, the Hawks, the Falcons did the damage in the first half and held strong in the second for the 68-57 win. Falcons coach Marg Lind said she was very happy with how the side kicked off the year. “It was a tough game and they really fought hard,” she said. “We had to focus and have concentration across the whole four quarters. “We should have built on the lead in the second half, but they made a good change and brought Shae Gee on for a bit more pace.” Lind said the Falcons’ attacking end, the same that played in last season’s grand final, continued where it had left off. She said there were also positive signs for the new-look defensive line-up. “Sarah [Szczykulski] and Zoe [Davies] are still working each other out,” she said.

“The defenders are growing each week – it’s now about working under that pressure.” Lind said the Falcons went into the game with just eight players while trying to give their state representatives court time across all the grades. That included Australian Netball League player Uneeq Palavi playing in VNL division 1, with fellow ANL player Jane Cook taking the goal shooter position in the top grade. The Falcons’ ANL defender Jacqui Newton didn’t play, with Lind saying they didn’t expect to see her until after the ANL season finished. Lind said it was important to get wins at this time of season when they had close to their best team on the court. “We can’t drop a game while we have that line-up,” she said. While it was a strong start for the championship side, there were mixed results across the Falcons’ other sides.

Lind said the division 1 side was “terrible” in its 60-27 loss. The result was compounded by an ankle injury to shooter Maddy Gray, which will limit the shooting options in the top two grades. The Falcons’ under-19s had a better night, beating the Hawks 47-42. Lind was impressed by the first-up performances of Chloe Langley, Daisy O’Kane and Hannah Magasanik. She said while they had impressed in training it was nice to see what they could do on court in proper competition. All three Falcons sides will this week face Casey Demons. Tara Murray

City builds winning foundation By Lance Jenkinson Altona City has caused a boilover with a come-from-behind 2-1 win over North Sunshine Eagles in the Football Federation Victoria men’s state league 1. City football director Sam Borg believes there is no tougher away venue in the division than Larissa Reserve. To come home with all three points was a day to savour for the Andy O’Dell-coached City. “It was a smashing result for us,” Borg said. “There’s no tougher trip in this league than going to North Sunshine.” Altona City was quietly confident of executing a snatch-and-grab win, going into the game on the back of a season-opening win over Essendon Royals. Even though North Sunshine is a totally different kettle of fish, a side that is tipped to 46 MARIBYRNONG & HOBSONS BAY STAR WEEKLY \ APRIL 3, 2019

be in contention at the end of the season, City believed it had what it took to win. “We were well set up to start the season,” Borg said. “We just kept everything under wraps. “Today’s result wasn’t a surprise at all for us.” Altona City was played off the park in the first half. It went into half-time a goal down and was lucky the damage was not worse. There was a feeling that North Sunshine was vulnerable in the second half because of an air of complacency. Even Eagles coach Ben Isai conceded his side was not ruthless enough in the first half. “I think North Sunshine felt like they had the three points before they stepped out today,” Borg said. The second half turned in favour of Altona City. City benefited from an own goal and the sending off of North Sunshine playing president Besnik Kutleshi for his part in a melee.

With scores level and a man advantage, Altona City went for the jugular and found a winning goal through David Mwarabu. “He’s a young boy who played at Sunbury last year,” Borg said. “He’s a very hard working midfielder. “Andy [O’Dell] believed in him, put him in the team today and he got a just reward for his efforts.” There were three standout performers for Altona City. Ben Sardelic was best-on-ground for his showing in the midfield, Evan Christodoulou’s work rate was second to none and goalkeeper Griffin McMaster showed why he was once a shot-stopper for Brisbane Roar and Wellington Phoenix in the A-League. Altona City pay a visit to the Club Italia Sporting Club to face the Andrew Marth-coached Brimbank Stallions on

Saturday. Elsewhere, Yarraville Glory coughed up a goal advantage to lose 2-1 to Preston Lions in state league 1. Altona East Phoenix is winless after two games in the state league 2 following a 3-0 loss to Westgate. Williamstown picked up its first point of the season in a 2-2 draw with Sunbury United in state league 3. In the NPL, Altona Magic is licking its wounds after copping a 4-1 belting from Heidelberg United. It brought to an end the Magic’s three-game winning streak. The seventh-placed Magic will face top-two side Bentleigh Greens at home on Saturday night. ■ More

Altona North sends a message with from-behind win Altona North’s stunning come-from-behind 3-2 win over Gisborne in the Football Federation Victoria men’s state league 4 has been overshadowed by a knee injury to captain Lee Dore. Dore went down clutching his knee in the dying stages of Saturday’s game at Duane Reserve and had to be stretchered off. It will be a major blow for North, who are a perfect two wins from two starts, which Dore has been influential in as a midfielder. North coach Alan Muscat is hoping for the best when Dore’s knee is assessed this week. “He’ll get an MRI scan this week and hopefully results come back and it’s nothing too bad,” Muscat said. “If he’s out, it will be a big loss for the football club. “He’s the general of our midfield.” Altona North spent all week working on nullifying Gisborne’s success at the set pieces. Gisborne has proven lethal from the dead

ball early in the season, while North’s clear deficiency in the lead up friendlies was its defence in those situations. North could not translate what they worked on during the week into Saturday as they copped the first two goals of the match through set pieces. “We spoke about our set pieces during the week,” Muscat said. “It’s something we struggled with during the off season and something we’ve worked on and still keep trying to work on. “Unfortunately the things we worked on during the week didn’t go to plan.” Instead of rolling over and saying it is all too hard with a two-goal deficit, Altona North’s fighting qualities shone through. North piled on three quick goals to take an unlikely 3-2 lead into the break. “Hats off to the boys, after two goals they responded and got three goals before the break,” Muscat said.

“It showed good fighting spirit.” Chris Swain was the architect of Altona North’s comeback. The winger scored a hat-trick in quick time to send North on their way to victory. “He scored the first goal through a bit of

Slow starts prove costly By Lance Jenkinson The problem that has plagued Altona Gators in their opening month reared up again in an 84-75 loss to Craigieburn Eagles in Big V men’s division 2 basketball at the Altona Sports Centre on Sunday. The Gators’ slow starts are becoming an issue as they are continually play catch-up. They stalled out of the blocks again, trailing by 18 at quarter-time before gradually working back into the contest – but falling short of completing a comeback. Gators coach Des Radoslovic is lamenting the slow starts that are contributing to his side’s 0-4 record. “It’s something we’ve tried to address,” he said. “We’ve tried multiple things, but we just haven’t found that recipe just yet. “We’ve tried mixing the starting line-ups around, varying the defences depending on who we’re playing and altered the pace of play. “I think it’s got to do with the overall energy and intensity when we first get on the court.” Altona is showing promising signs within matches, but they have not been able to produce a consistent four-quarter effort. Early in the Craigieburn match, it was some defensive assignments that landed them in hot water. Late in the game, when they had a sniff of victory, it was their offence that went missing. “Apart from the defence in the first quarter, we turned it around from there,” Radoslovic said. “Then, in the last quarter, we shot three-from-20 … we were getting good shooters good shots, but they just weren’t falling.” “When you get yourself into a hole like we did in the first quarter … you’re playing catch-up for too long.” A positive note for Altona was the performance of young point guard Nathanael Coory. He looked back to his best with an efficient 23 points, seven rebounds and two assists. “He had a little bit of an interrupted pre-season,” Radoslovic said. “He flew over to America for a few college visits and just before round one he got sick. “The first few weeks he wasn’t really himself, but he came back and had a better game today. “That’s what we expect from him – to be playing at that level.” Jovan Bojanic provided the Gators a lift off the bench. Bojanic scored 17 points to go with four rebounds, three assists and two steals in a well-rounded performance. “He gave us a good scoring punch off the bench,” Radoslovic said. “He played his part.” Altona’s search for a first win of the campaign will go on when it visits Mornington Breakers on Sunday.

brilliance down the flank between himself and a couple of other players,” Muscat said. “The second was a penalty and the third was a free kick. “There was a bit of individual brilliance with two of the goals.” Benjamin Bafwe, Ritchie Rossi and Elvir Hasanbegovic were the other standout performers across the midfield. Aside from the set piece mishaps, Muscat felt like Altona North deserved all three points. “I thought we controlled the game pretty well,” he said. “In patches in the first half, they got their goals and had their tail up, but I think in open play we moved the ball very quick and had them on the ropes at certain times.” Altona North will venture to winless Golden Plains for a Saturday night game in round three. Lance Jenkinson

Rise shine for Altona Sports Altona Sports has laid the foundations for a period of sustained success in Bowls Victoria Saturday pennant. The Sports have been promoted to second-tier division 1 for next summer after claiming the section 1 title in division 2 this season. Sports player-coach Glenn Maxwell is confident his side is ready to step up to tougher competition. “We got to division 1 three seasons ago and at the time we were probably a bit out of our depth,” he said. “We’ve got three or four new faces down at the club now, which has helped us out a fair bit. “We’re not going over the top and saying we can win division 1 straight away, but we think we can lock it in concrete that we’ll be in division 1 for the next four or five years. “You never know – by the end of it, the club might have a premier league side.” The relative youth on the playing list is fuelling optimism. While Sports is coming up against teams with players of upwards of 40 years experience in the game, their next generation is only now starting to emerge. “We’ve got a good eight players who are only playing their fifth season or so,” Maxwell said. “They’re babies in the world of lawn bowls. “They’ve got more experience under their belts now and it’s showing. The past two seasons we’ve lost a total of four games.” Altona Sports ran the gauntlet all the way through to the division final. Unfortunately for Sports, they could not get the job done in the big one, losing 94-80 to Aberfeldie CBC in the decider at Glen Waverley Bowls Club. “We won our section, so we got promoted,” Maxwell said. Maxwell, Paul Howard, David Vogele and Jayden Wombell were Altona Sports’ four skips this summer. Wombell is the youngest of the quartet at just 22 and shows incredible potential. “He’s been a fantastic pick up for the club,” Maxwell said. Maxwell is confident Altona Sports will spring a surprise or two in its promotion season. “You just want to be competitive,” he said. “When you go out and play sport against better competition, you also rise to that level.”

After an interrupted preparation, young point guard Nathanael Coory is starting to find his best form for Altona Gators. (Luke Hemer)
