Award-winning singer Nikita Azzopardi is a well-known face around Altona, where she has cut her teeth and honed her art performing at venues and festivals. Now the Altona resident, 22, has released her debut single, Stones. “Stones Stones is about the anxiety I was feeling throughout my previous relationship and the support and love I had received during that time,” she said. “The majority of my songs come straight from my diary or my personal life.” Inspired by artists such as Alicia Keys, Sara Bareilles and Sheryl Crow, Nikita started winning singing competitions from an early age. “I was 13 when I started singing at the Refinery School of Music in Williamstown North,” Nikita said. “I’ve been singing for 10 years … I started playing piano and guitar.” Two years ago, she signed with Cultivator Records and began writing and recording material for an EP due out later this year. Nikita works full-time on recording music and performing at gigs, fundraisers and festivals. She’s a resident musician at Altona’s Mosaic restaurant on Sundays from 2pm. Road rage drives assaults By Goya Dmytryshchak and Benjamin Millar Road rage over West Gate Tunnel construction and a crackdown on family violence are behind a jump in assaults in Hobsons Bay last year, police say. Inspector Peter O’Connor said police were concerned to see an increase in non-family violence serious assaults. “Some of them are road rage incidents because of the widening of the freeway … I think just because of the traffic congestion,” Inspector O’Connor said. “It’s a crawl during peak hour and there’s
gridlocks and I think that’s where people get very frustrated. “They pull off the off-ramps and have a disagreement.” Data released last week by the Crime Statistics Agency showed Hobsons Bay’s overall crime rate was up 2.7 per cent from 6076 to 6238 reported offences from December 2017 to December 2018. The rise was despite a 30 per cent fall in the number of burglaries from 513 to a 10-year low of 361. Crime against the person rose 2.6 per cent from 957 to 982, including assaults jumping from 486 to 547. Inspector O’Connor said the Hobsons Bay
Summer Policing Team, which operated in and around Altona and Williamstown beaches, accounted for the high detection of public nuisance offences (60 to 133). “The … team has been proactively targeting people for begging,” Inspector O’Connor said. “A lot of them [beggars] aren’t destitute, they’re just there to earn some money so they hassle people.” Deception offences in Hobsons Bay were up from 287 to 340 and drug use and possession climbed from 166 to 250. Property offences were down 7.6 per cent from 3801 to 3512, including a drop in property damage from 694 to 537.
The statistics revealed a 5.1 per cent rise in reported crimes in Maribyrnong during the same time period was driven by a 5.5 per cent jump in thefts. Overall crime rose from 8021 offences to 8434, while thefts jumped from 3475 to 3666. Property damage (up from 611 to 678), arson (21 to 37), robbery (119 to 134) and drug use (311 to 372) offences all rose, but drops were recorded in the number of homicides (eight down to two), assaults (576 to 556) and drug dealing (78 to 56). While both areas recorded an increase in crime over the 12 months, the overall volume remains below the levels recorded in 2016.

Divide opens up over park plan By Benjamin Millar Tensions have arisen over plans for a vast swathe of Footscray Park to be leased to champion A-League club Melbourne Victory for use as a new soccer academy. Star Weekly this month reported Maribyrnong council is updating its Footscray Park master plan to include three new pitches and other facilities for the $18 million academy, including a show pitch with undercover seating for 600 spectators.
Melbourne Victory is seeking a 21-year lease of the academy site, which a council report supported as a way of unlocking the site’s potential and strengthen the local sporting landscape. But Footscray resident Brian Baldie said the plan effectively hands much-needed public space over to private use. “This is a space for people to play games and walk their dogs and it’s used for things like New Year’s Eve and other festivals,” he said. “This proposal is for the majority of the open public area. I’m concerned that down the line
they may look to place further restrictions on public access.” Mr Baldie said he shared concerns that had been raised about the potential impact of the plan on the floodplain and the effect this would have on the adjacent Maribyrnong River. He also questioned how many people were aware of the plans and the short consultation period for such a major change to the park’s use. “They only letter-boxed a very small number of streets around the park about this, I don’t
know how many people know what they’re planning,” he said. “Footscray Park itself is for the whole of the municipality, not just those people who live two or three streets away.” Maribyrnong council has indicated the soccer academy should not impact the site’s ability to host New Year’s Eve celebrations and other community festivals. Youth take centre stage
Tree vandals strike Altona Vandals have been poisoning trees on nature strips and other public land in Hobsons Bay, costing ratepayers thousands of dollars. In the latest case, a Queensland brush box tree in Civic Parade has had holes bored into its base and poison poured into the trunk. It is illegal to “destroy, cut, trim, prune or otherwise interfere with a street tree” without authorisation. Mayor Jonathon Marsden said the council was investigating the Civic Parade incident. “This act of vandalism is disappointing especially when council works hard to beautify and enhance the city for residents and visitors to enjoy,” he said. “Replacing vandalised and stolen plants and trees costs council around $10,000 every year. This particular tree is highly valuable and significantly contributes to Altona’s streetscape. “If there is a willing witness, council will determine whether there is sufficient evidence to prosecute the offender.” On-the-spot fines of $400 and court penalties of $2000 may apply. Incidents may be reported to the council using the smart phone application, Snap Send Solve, or by calling 9932 1000.
An outdoor party is being held at Newport for Victorian Youth Week. The week, which runs from Friday, April 5 to Sunday, April 14, kicks off in Hobsons Bay with a ‘Music on the Deck’ event and giant arcade-style games at Newport Community Hub from 5-7.30pm. Nominations are being invited for the Hobsons Bay UP Inspiring Young Person Awards ahead of the week. Nominees must be aged between 12 and 25 years, and live, work, study or volunteer in Hobsons Bay. The awards will be presented on Monday, April 8 at the Hobsons Bay Civic Centre in Altona. Free events during the week include workshops on making robotics and Manga drawing, and an exhibition titled Showing UP open to art mediums including film, music, website design and jewellery making. Christchurch condolences
By Benjamin Millar Australia’s first multi-storey shipping container hotel could be built in Footscray under plans currently before the state government. A 215-room, six-storey hotel has been flagged for a vacant 6900-square-metre site directly south of Footscray railway station, anchoring a new precinct that would also feature shops, offices and arts and crafts workshops – all constructed from empty shipping containers. The project would use 416 containers, stacked from one to six levels high in five distinct blocks spread around a heritage-significant Moreton Bay Fig Tree. The six-storey main block will contain retail at ground level with a 215-room hotel above. Two-storey blocks will contain 35 office tenancies, 18 art and craft workshops, 1200 square metres of retail space and 45 square metres of food and drink outlets. Another block would hold 52 self-storage units. The development at 3 McNab Avenue would be in place for up to 15 years, then dismantled to make way for a more permanent development. Shipping containers have been incorporated into a growing number of boutique hotels across the globe, but the Footscray proposal is the first of this scale in Australia and would be one of the world’s largest. The retail element is loosely based on projects such as Pop Brixton and Boxpark in London and a shopping mall recreated in Christchurch after the 2011 earthquakes. The planning minister is the responsible authority for the site, but has sought feedback from Maribyrnong council. A report by council urban planning manager Steven Lionakis notes the prominent site has been vacant for a number of years and has been

“a sub-optimal use of this strategic Footscray site”. “Generally, the application activates the site with a number of uses and would enhance the night-time economy,” the report states. The council is backing the proposal with conditions, including a refined design and use of higher-quality materials and finishes. It also wants assurances the developer will eventually

provide the previously promised community infrastructure and facilities that were a condition of the sale of the public land by the state government, including a childcare centre, community kitchen and an artist’s residence. The state government sold the site in 2017 after joining developer Grocon to develop the adjacent site in the first of what was meant to be a three-stage development project.
Community members are being invited to contribute to a condolence book to be sent to the mayor of Christchurch on behalf of Hobsons Bay. Hobsons Bay council said people could contribute in any form that was meaningful to them, such as letters, poetry, drawings, artworks and other expressions of condolence. It comes as non-Muslim members of the Hobsons Bay Interfaith Network issued a written statement offering their deepest sympathy to the Muslim community in Hobsons Bay in response to the terror attack in New Zealand. “We are horrified that peaceful worshippers were killed and injured as they were at prayer,” it reads in part. “We commit ourselves to standing with our Muslim neighbours in this time of tragedy. “We rejoice that we live in a multicultural and multifaith community, and that all of us have been welcomed into Hobsons Bay by the elders of the Kulin Nations, who are the sovereign peoples of this land. We reject anything that divides us from one another.” The council’s condolence book is at the Hobsons Bay Civic Centre in Altona. A $1.9 million park is being developed on the site of the former Laverton Primary School. Hobsons Bay council bought the 1.4-hectare Epsom Street site for about $2.6 million in 2014. The Epsom Street Reserve will be centrally positioned with “affordable housing” built at a later stage. The park will have: solar powered lighting along a main path; a playground with swings, climbing net, trampoline, slides and accessible spinner; a barbecue and picnic area; pump track for scooters, bicycles and skateboards; half court for basketball and netball; ping pong table; rain garden with native shrubs and grasses; and outdoor exercise equipment. The council has allocated 9250 square metres of land for the park and 5250 square metres for housing. Councillor Colleen Gates said Laverton residents had long lobbied for the site to be used for open space and affordable housing. “A personal favourite of mine was recollecting one small boy who did turn up to the consultation session that we held at the location and spoke about his vision of a miniature grand prix track. “That feedback has been incorporated into the design on a slightly larger scale – we’ve got a pump track, which will not only enable remote control cars but small scooters and children on small bikes.” Goya Dmytryshchak

Residents fear redevelopment plans by one of the world’s biggest glass manufacturers at Spotswood could threaten truck bans to be introduced in Hudsons Road once the West Gate Tunnel is built. O-I Operations has applied to Hobsons Bay council to build two warehouses with five access points, including two in Hudsons Road, which will have a truck ban when the tunnel is completed in 2022. The state government is implementing 24-hour truck bans on six local roads, including Hudsons Road, in response to modelling which identified these streets could become rat runs used by thousands of extra trucks a day. Resident Jason Harrison said O-I’s plans to build two driveways in Hudsons Road threatened the truck ban. “Simcock Avenue has served O-I glass well and there is no reason for them not to continue to use it – you could say the road exists for their use,” he said. “It … leaves Hudsons Road open to truck use; it won’t take long for trucks to find our street open and dodge the new road and the tolls. “Despite having the new on-ramps of the West Gate Tunnel literally 500 metres away from their operations, it would seem they still want to use the local roads.” O-I has been at the Spotswood site since it acquired ACI Packaging in 1998. A traffic report prepared by Impact consultants states that the plans will result in a reduction of 69 heavy vehicle movements in Hudsons Road and an increase of 60-67 in Booker Street and Simcock Avenue. “Following the completion of the West Gate Tunnel project, convenient access between the

Call to take on racism’s ‘harms’ By Benjamin Millar The Christchurch terror attack that killed 50 people and left dozens injured has highlighted the importance of tackling the harms caused by racism, a Footscray forum has been told. Liana Buchanan, Victoria’s Principal Commissioner for Children and Young People, was the keynote speaker at a workshop last Thursday marking the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. Ms Buchanan was joined by Gellibrand MP Tim Watts and a number of African-Australian speakers for the workshop held by African
Australian Multicultural Employment and Youth Services. “If there was ever a time to talk about racism, to talk about the harms that it causes, to name racist narratives and the connection between those narratives and violent extremism then it’s truly now,” she said. “The last three years have marked a low point in the treatment of African-Australian young people in the media and in political discussions in this state and more broadly.” Ms Buchanan said there was no denying some young Australians of African heritage had been involved in crime, but the scope
of the issue “has been blown entirely out of proportion”. “At a federal level, I think it’s fair to say we’ve seen some of the most blatant, race-based dog whistling,” she said. “The research and evidence is incredibly clear that those who are most impacted by discrimination, most impacted by racism in any community, are people who are children and people who are young. “We know that when young people don’t feel connected to the society they live in, or are valued by it, then that can at the very least compound some of the factors that drives them into antisocial behaviour.”

While the distance straight across is about 34 kilometres, Gardner said they would be carried by the tides in an S-shape taking their swim closer to 50 kilometres. “We’ve played water polo with and against each other since we were early teenagers and we were looking for a bit of a challenge over a couple of beers,” he said. “We thought we’d better get back into things and get fit again. Some of us are in our late 30s, turning 40 this year, so that was a bit of an inspiration to do something – do something in front of our kids as well.” While in the past, swimmers have greased themselves with goose fat for insulation, the
pair will use only an ointment to prevent chaffing. Their food will be handed to them on a pole from an escort boat, as their pilot leads them through the busy shipping lane. Their training includes five-kilometre swims at local pools, 15-kilometre ocean swims and going for a dip in Port Phillip Bay in winter to acclimatise to cooler temperatures. Past swimmers have completed the crossing in between about seven and 28 hours. Osuchowski said his team was trying to make it in 10 to 11 hours. “I think if we can achieve that, we’ll be very happy,” he said. “Good news – no sharks. But lots of jellyfish and maybe jellyfish blooms as well, but we get used to that.”

“I am a local and feel I should be able to cross to the beach without having to go miles out of my way,” Ms Knox said. “Cars get fined for parking everywhere else in Hobsons Bay – why can’t we make these cars accountable for blocking our paths? “I’m not just speaking for me but for many others I meet in wheelchairs and mums with prams. “We need to be heard and signs need to be put up that cars will be towed or fined if they block the paths. “I could not cross for the whole of summer at any time on the weekends – and now it’s autumn, I still can’t cross.” In many of the photos taken by Ms Knox, cars have parked across the footpath access points when there was ample room elsewhere. Hobsons Bay mayor Jonathon Marsden said the council would immediately act. “In the interim, we will put in place yellow line markings to prevent motorists from parking in front of the crossing,” he said.

Man sentenced for groping girl A man has been placed on a 12-month community corrections order for groping a 12-year-old girl at a shopping centre. Rodney Gibson, 48, was this month sentenced by the County Court after being found guilty by a jury of sexual assault of a child under 16. He has been placed on the sex offender register for eight years and is required to provide a forensic sample at Altona North police station. The court heard the girl had been at a shopping centre with her parents and sister about 3.30pm on the day before Christmas in 2017, when Gibson walked past and squeezed her buttock. The girl promptly told her mother, who took photos of Gibson which led to his identification via social media. The incident was reported to centre management and police the same day, but Gibson denied the offence. The court heard Gibson had a criminal record stretching back to 1988. In her sentencing remarks, Judge Lisa Hannan said she must seek to deter not only Gibson but others. “The court and the community will not tolerate offending, which damages the lives of our children,” she said. Gibson must perform 80 hours of unpaid community work and participate in offending behaviour programs. Forty hours of treatment and rehabilitation can be counted as work, Ms Hannan said. Krystyna Soprun always knew she wanted to work with children. The manager of Brenbeal Children’s Centre in Footscray has chalked up 20 years with the service, working her way up through the centre after moving to Melbourne from her Poland. “I went to VU TAFE here in Footscray and came to Brenbeal for my placement, then I’ve stayed on here,” she said. “I’ve always wanted to work with children, I think that’s a very rewarding job, watching the children growing and developing new skills and become so confident with their learning.” Ms Soprun took on the role as manager last
year, drawn to helping the centre strengthen its already strong ties with families and the community. “I really enjoy working with the families here, they are very supportive and work closely with the centre,” she said. “That’s what keeps me here. Brenbeal has a very good reputation in our area and I’m just working to maintain that. “We’re doing lots of new things here at Brenbeal which I’m really looking forward to sharing.” Ms Soprun said a lot has changed in childcare and kindergarten since she began in the sector, particularly around understanding the specific needs and passions of the children.

“The children’s interests and the children’s voices are very important in our programming, we develop the program according to their interests,” she said. “We spend more time talking to the children, listening to what they say and then trying to meet their expectations.” Ms Soprun’s lengthy stint at the centre means she has also been around to see some of her ‘babies’ reach new milestones. “I have one of the children I looked after in the baby’s room come for a placement as a year 10 student,” she said. “I see them outside, because I live in the area, my first year children have now finished at university.”
Chelsea Rooth is proof that following your passion can be a great move. The VCAL student at Caroline Chisholm Catholic College left school in mid-2018 to pursue a career in the beauty industry. Chelsea has loved every minute, landing a stint as junior beauty therapist at Utopia Skin Solutions in Yarraville. She was given a work experience placement at the salon as part of her studies – by somewhat reluctant owner Leanne Jones. “The school initially came to me asking if I’d be interested in taking on a work experience student and I, in no uncertain terms, said I wasn’t interested,” Ms Jones said. “They convinced me to take on Chelsea and I thought I was doing them a big favour. But as we went further into the work experience, I could see the benefits. “Chelsea … became a really big help, as well as someone I could teach and mentor. Now she’s a junior therapist with her own client base.” Tate Papworth
Gellibrand bid by United candidate Williamstown resident Lisa Bentley has been announced as the United Australia Party’s candidate for Gellibrand in the federal election. I’ve lived in Seddon for about 13 years. I love it here. It’s a fantastic area, the schools are great, I have an 11-year-old at Yarraville West and it’s such a good school. We have all the Charles Street stores, cafes and restaurants – they’re all really high quality. What’s your favourite? I have to say Charles & Gamon, that’s my local and it’s been there for years. It’s changed ownership, but it’s still just such a great place to meet up with people. You can hang out inside or outside. What do you like most about living here? It’s a great community – everybody knows everybody. How did you become a magician? My grandfather was a magician. He was a travelling magician – it was half silent movie show and half magic show. When I was about eight or nine years old, he slowly began teaching me the secrets of the craft. He became my hero and that’s what got me interested in magic. From there it kept growing. How did you make your own professional start?
I started in theatre restaurants, then I went on to perform on cruise ships and in casinos. I collected a whole bank of costumes and props and met all these great people working in lighting and designers and all the best dancers. What is the enduring appeal of magic shows? It’s incredible that magic is still part of our lives. I think it’s just people want to believe in a bit of fantasy. It’s escapism. I love watching people’s faces – they just turn into children. They’re escaping from their day-to-day lives. What do you have planned for The Ultimate Vegas Show this weekend? The Ultimate Vegas Show is everything that is synonymous with Las Vegas. We have the leggy showgirls and showboys, Elvis who is synonymous with Vegas and Dean Martin is hosting. We have a beautiful, colourful Carmen Miranda. I don’t want to spill the beans too much, but there is a wide variety of illusions and entertainment. I’m basically replicating what you would see in a major Las Vegas show. (Damjan Janevski)

Lentils/pulses three different ways; the familiar carrot/potato, beetroot and greens; sprightly salad – all beautifully cooked and presented, all in just the right quantities for a wonderfully balanced meal. This winning offering costs a supremely cheap $12. But if you visit Ghion on Wednesday – day or night – it’ll cost you a mere $10. Among the various meat dishes, lega tibs ($13) is lovely. There’s no doubt the old Sunshine station – and its gloomy, even spooky tunnel/underpass through to City Place – deserved and needed to be replaced. But given the new station edifice involves a much less direct and stair-heavy route, I wondered what impact the new arrangements would have on City Place and the surrounding businesses and neighbourhood. Surely the curious would be much less inclined to venture to “the other side of the tracks” from Sunshine central and its much more numerous shops and eateries? But something rather nice appears to be happening in the face of this enforced “separation”. It’s now possible to consider City Place and the adjacent Sun Crescent as an entirely different neighbourhood. It’s very laid back, with none of the hustle and bustle of Sunshine proper. I’d not go so far as to suggest this neighbourhood is prospering or constantly buzzing, but it does seem to be getting on with doing its own thing. It’s tempting to describe the overall vibe as African, but that would be misleading. There’s hairdressers/barbers, a cafe, groceries and an arts space. The fine and long-term Chinese eatery Dragon Express remains in place, while around the corner is the utterly fabulous Panjali Banana Leaf Malaysian Restaurant, as well as a kebab shop, an Ethiopian place and a Sri Lankan outlet.

Recently my hubby, Kevin, bought me the cutest little wooden cheese board as a present – but then promptly claimed it as his own, regularly creating his own cheese boards for his lunch. Along with a selection of camembert, triple-cream brie (he’s just discovered the Maggie Beer variety in the supermarket and loves it) and Mersey Valley vintage tasty, he’ll throw together a rustic-looking selection of baby roma tomatoes seasoned with olive oil and sea salt flakes, toasted sourdough and the most marvellous mustard pickles (a jar of which was gifted to me by a colleague who believes pickle making is a fine art). FB: How would you rate your cooking skills? JT: Pretty high. I’m very much a self-taught cook, but have been lucky to work in some amazing kitchens and under some very creative head chefs. It’s helped me to really expand my understanding and skill set and give me the confidence to try more advanced dishes during my Jerrad’s Kitchen events. FB: What is your signature dish? JT: My signature dish would be a prosciutto-wrapped chicken breast stuffed with sundried tomatoes, chargrilled capsicums and feta cheese. I serve it with a creamy cauliflower puree, glazed broccolini and baby carrots, brussels sprout leaves and a strained sauce from the chicken juices. FB: If you could only have one more meal, what would it be? JT: During my A-League career, my diet was very strict to ensure my weight and skinfolds would stay at the required level. However, on my birthday, I’d always celebrate with a wild combination of chicken nuggets, pizza and lasagna. I’d have it with a mango and strawberry Boost juice and finish the meal with homemade pancakes, ice-cream, berries and maple syrup. FB: What is your favourite TV food show and who is your favourite TV food person? JT: I love the Netflix series, Chefs Table. It takes you behind the scenes of some of the restaurants from the World’s Top 50 Restaurants list. It’s incredibly inspiring and the cinematography is phenomenal. FB: What is your favourite food? JT: I’d have to say lasagna – it’s my ultimate comfort food. FB: What is your favourite drink? JT: As a little boy orange juice was a big deal. It was kind of a luxury item and only appeared on special occasions. So having never been big on soft drinks or alcohol, juice naturally became my go-to when wanting something a little crazier then my standard glass of water. FB: Which five people would you most like to invite to dinner? JT: Jamie Oliver, Jim Carey, Mark Schwarzer, Steve Jobs and Walt Disney. FB: Do you have a kitchen tip for us? Panagiotis Kone is eager to rip into his new career challenge with Western United. Kone was the first signature secured by the A-League expansion team and was immediately tagged with marquee status because of his elite talent. A star attacking midfielder with 28 caps for Greece and deep playing experience in soccer leagues across Europe, Kone has experienced just about all that he can at the top level. While playing for massive clubs such as AEK Athens, Brescia, Bologna and Udinese was the peak of his career, the opportunity that presents at Western United is unique by comparison. Kone will be the star player in a team that will start from scratch in the A-League next season. SPORT Jets settle for a come-from-behind win Western Jets had to overcome a hefty three-quarter time deficit to secure victory in coach Ryan O’Keefe’s first game in charge. The Jets trailed by 19 points at the last change in the NAB League season opener at Ikon Park on Sunday, but banged on six goals to two in the final term to run out seven-point winners. Lucas Failli kicked the game-sealing goal for the Jets deep into time on. O’Keefe lauded the Jets’ will to win on a day when they did not meet all their targets. “It showed a really good character amongst the group to keep sticking it out and keep playing,” he said. “We probably didn’t play our best footy … but in that last quarter we got to the way we wanted to play. “The determination and the character of the boys is something to be really proud of.” There was no ranting and raving in the Western Jets’ huddle at three-quarter time.
O’Keefe merely reminded the players to return to the processes they had worked on during the pre-season. “We wanted to peel it back and just work on a couple of key points,” he said. “It was a real good educational game for our boys. When we did do something and when we didn’t, the outcome really showed.” O’Keefe felt the Jets played a little hesitantly in the first three quarters. As the game wore on, the signs got better for the Jets and they eventually found the runway. “It’s one of those things – first game, a lot of people are a bit nervous and probably played the game in their head before they got out there,” O’Keefe said. One player who needed no settle time was Josh Kellett, son of one-time Western Bulldogs speedy utility Nigel. Kellett was superb in his role across half-back, effective both defensively and with his rebound out of defence.
“He used the ball well, defended well and he was definitely one of our better players,” O’Keefe said. “He had a really good game and his form all pre-season was fantastic.” Archi Manton, son of former Carlton and Essendon defender Glenn and one of the standouts in the practice matches, capped a stellar game with three goals. “He’s competitive, he won all of his one-on-ones,” O’Keefe said. “He was able to hit the scoreboard as well. He was really hard to handle in our forward line.” Other Jets to impress were Bailey Ryan and Josh Honey in the midfield and Ethan Acevski in defence. Gulls work fresh faces By Lance Jenkinson A changing of the guard has led to some uncertainty at the selection table for Williamstown ahead of the Victorian Football League season. The Seagulls lost a number of well-known names over the summer and will be turning to youth to pick up the baton. Seagulls coach Andrew Collins admits there will be a little bit more of the unknown than usual entering this season. “I’m learning a lot about the new group,” Collins said. “We’re a vastly different team to what we were last year. “Now we start all over again and build our synergy together.” This has been one of the most important practice match periods for Williamstown because of the uncertainty surrounding selection for round one. In years past, you could have had a fair idea what most of the Seagulls’ team would look like for their season opener, but this year there are plenty of spots up for grabs and players to be auditioned. Leaders Ben Jolley and Peter Faulks departed Williamstown in the off season. Jolley will come face-to-face with his former Seagulls teammates when his new side Port Melbourne ventures to the newly named Downer Oval in Williamstown for the season opener under new lights on April 6. Faulks has moved to the country to play with Echuca. Four Williamstown players hit the big time, making it on to AFL lists. Michael Gibbons (Carlton) and Lachie Schultz (Fremantle) made their AFL debuts at the weekend, while Brett Bewley (Fremantle) and Ben Cavarra (Western Bulldogs) could get their opportunities soon. Other senior players to depart the Seagulls were Lachlan George, Daylan Kempster, Jordan Jones and Ben Bese. Collins praised the outgoing players, in particular Jolley and Faulks, for playing a huge role in sending the Seagulls into the right direction. “We thank them for setting a platform of what the culture is today,” he said. This pre-season is all about the future for Williamstown. The Seagulls have lost two of their three practice matches so far, including a 22-point defeat away to Sandringham on Saturday, but it has allowed Collins to compile notes on his new players and assess the readiness of individuals in the system to take over. in The doGhouse ■ The start of the AFL season reminds me of how much my world and that of many others revolves around footy at all levels – AFL, VFL, suburban and juniors (men’s and women’s). It is also such a barometer for the mood of people in workplaces. There certainly is no other sport that generates the kind of passion and dedication in our environment like footy. The English, Europeans and South Americans have it with their football. It is like an additive to the air you breathe. You know on Sunday night if a workmate is going to be in a good mood based on the results from the weekend games. Bragging rights, tipping competitions and ridiculous bets all come to the fore and we love it. ■ More than those things though, footy is about people and it was great last Saturday night to be among the red, white and blue brigade to start another hope-filled season. The faces are the same, as are the expectations. The Bulldogs past players and officials group has never been in better shape and catching up with former players, trainers, statisticians and staff is a treat. The great Barry Round was in town from the Gold Coast and looking good after a heart operation that was supposed to be a 4 hour valve replacement but turned into a 10 hour saving-his-life procedure. A philosophical and always generous Barry offered his services to young Bulldog rookie Laitham Vandermeer, who told the room he was working on building up his body size. Not sure the Bulldogs dietician would see it Roundy’s way. ■ Stephen Wallis talked about himself? Never. One of the most unassuming champions of the red, white and blue, the 261 game veteran was happy to talk about his sons – Mitch (AFL) and Josh (VFL). He recently sold the family car businesses and runs a couple of farms and fishes a lot. He has certainly had an amazing business life, starting out as a junior accountant with Werribee Mazda in its old Cherry Street showrooms. ■ Lots of celebrations are taking place with victorious cricket teams across the west. Yarraville Club Cricket Club Third XI and its All Abilities teams have tasted premiership success while Hoppers Crossing fourths lost to Plenty Valley and Werribee thirds missed out to Preston. Jets still aim high despite poor start to the season The Western Jets remain willing learners despite a tough start to the NAB League girls season. The Jets lost a third straight game to start the season in a 25-point defeat to the Northern Knights at RAMS Arena on Saturday. Jets coach Zac Read has seen enough improvement in his team from week to week and an appetite from players to improve to be confident that positive results are just around the corner. “Each week they’ve turned up on Tuesday ready to improve and ready to go again,” Read said. “We’re seeing that improvement, we took another step forward this week and we’re tracking upwards.” Poor conversion is hurting the Western Jets. Their return from three matches is 4.13 – a conversion rate of a tick over 30 per cent. They kicked just 1.6 from seven scoring shots against the Knights.
Read is not laying the blame solely at his forwards, but also those who have been delivering into the forward 50 and forcing the forwards into pressure shots. He is confident when the transition from the midfield to attack is cleaner, the Jets will start to produce bigger scores. “We’re probably not using it overly well going forward,” Read said. “The entries haven’t been as good as we would have liked, so we haven’t been able to get those marks inside 50. “A lot of our scores have been from general play, which makes it hard to convert.” What cannot be faulted is the Western Jets endeavour in the midfield. Ruby Tripodi and Emma Quinn have worked tirelessly to move the ball forward for the Jets. “They did a great job against the Knights, who have some players from the academy program,” Read said. “They matched it with them on the inside.”
Taylah Kolevski battled hard as an under-sized ruck and served up some impressive taps for the onballers to feast on. Other Jets who are shining early in the season are midfielder-forward Isabella Grant, medium forward Nikita Wright, who kicked the Jets only goal against the Knights, and half-back/ onballer Elisabeth Georgostathis. “Liz leads not just on field, but off field as well, setting standards and bringing the girls together,” Read said. “She’s been well supported by Cleo Saxon-Jones, who is one of our academy girls and is vice captain as well.” Western Jets will be looking for their first win when they face Eastern Ranges at RAMS Arena on Saturday. Confidence the key ingredient for Roosters
By Lance Jenkinson Shadows of doubt crept over Druids’ credentials as a premiership contender in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association division 1 west as recently as February 2. The question being asked of the West Footscray-based club on that day was ‘how could it rebound after being handed a cricket lesson from Airport West-St Christophers?’ The response from Druids was like no other. Only 49 days after that soul-searching experience, Druids stood atop the podium as the premiers, beating that same Airport West-St Christophers team in commanding fashion by seven wickets in a four-day grand final at Shorten Reserve. The premiership was achieved exactly 30 days after they claimed the Twenty20 premiership. Druids captain Leigh Wilson lauded his players for the incredible turnaround. “They touched us up about two months ago,” Wilson said. “We knew they’re a quality side and to come out and beat them the way we did in the grand final showed a lot of grit and character from the guys, who were willing to respond and show resilience to get back to winning cricket games. “Obviously we had a great three days in the grand final, but to also win the T20 flag and also get the contributors throughout the year to get us into the position we were in, it was fantastic and I’m really proud of everyone.” Druids were set a target of 254 for victory. It was an all-in effort that ensured Druids did not have to chase any more, which had them in the box seat after the first weekend. “They could’ve got 350-plus and it would’ve been a much different game if that happened,” Wilson said. “Credit to the bowlers and all the fielders and everyone that contributed last week to get us into that position.” Druids were given an intense examination from the West Saints bowlers. Their batsmen withstood every challenge, executing their run chase to perfection. Wilson had a great summer with the bat, but his stat sheet lacked an eye-catching score. It was the captain’s time to lead his team to victory and he did so with a gutsy 126. “I’ve probably only made six or seven hundreds in my senior career, so to make one in a grand final is pretty special,” Wilson said. “You’ve got to take a bit of responsibility in the big games and I thought it was a perfect opportunity for me to do that. “I’ve played a lot of innings where I’ve been able to score a lot quicker and do it a lot easier, but this one was where I had to bat a lot longer and get through a few tough periods.” Half-centuries to opener Steve Nicholson (50) and Shane Windridge (52 not out) were huge for Druids. but he grinded away for 30 overs to frustrate the West Saints. “Everyone that batted showed a bit of grit,” Wilson said. The premiership means the Druids will finally achieve a long-term aim of promotion to the VTCA’s top-flight senior division. The scope of what his team has achieved hit home for Wilson when he saw the emotion on the face of former club president Warren Roach after the game.
“It was terrific to see a lot of people who work hard behind the scenes get the reward for it,” Wilson said. “You see Warren Roach, he’s done a lot for the club and to see him get a bit emotional when we won the flag was pretty special for me as a player. “There’s also the likes of [current president] Richard Brennan, Gary Tilton and George Arcadiou – they’re the backbone of the club and they’ve put a lot of work in.”
To those on the outside, Altona Roosters had the look of an underdog heading into the Victorian Turf Cricket Association division 2 finals. The Roosters snuck into the finals in fourth and had to win both finals on the road if they were to become premiers. As soon as March arrived, it became apparent the Roosters were the team of destiny. In the inner sanctum, this belief had burned brightly since the moment they captured the Steve McNamara Shield at Sewell Reserve on Saturday afternoon. Roosters captain Ash Peters said the Roosters held no fears going into the finals, particularly not against the second-ranked Glenroy, who they beat twice during the season. “Knowing the players we have and the talent we’ve got, we could push any team,” Peters said. Altona Roosters sauntered to an outright win by an innings and 88 runs. This was a beatdown of epic proportions. After skittling Glenroy for 65 in the first innings, the Roosters posted 205, a commanding lead of 140 runs. Glenroy’s second innings was just as dismal on Saturday, bowled out for 52 in 45.3 overs. Malith Cooray put the exclamation mark on the Roosters’ first senior VTCA premiership. He rattled Glenroy with fast and straight bowling to take 6-19 off 11.3 overs. Cooray’s adherence to the Roosters game plan impressed his skipper. “We had a plan to attack the stumps early and make them play at every ball,” Peters said. “He made them play every ball and a couple of edges went through to the keeper. “He executed the plans that we’ve been speaking about.” As good as Cooray’s second innings bowling was, it was still not enough to wrap up man-of-the-match award. That honour went to all-rounder Sanjaya Fernando, who was the architect of the Roosters first innings lead. Fernando scored 71 and took 4-5. “He set the game up for us with the bat and with the ball,” Peters said. The Roosters will move up to division 1 next summer.
