A $64 million aquatic plan for Hobsons Bay, including a $40 million pool in Altona Meadows and replacing Laverton pool with an outdoor water park, has been unveiled by the council. The Hobsons Bay Aquatic Strategy 2019-2030 outlines plans for a $40.75 million “Western Aquatic Centre” to be built at Bruce Comben Reserve. It would include an eight-lane, 25-metre pool and smaller pools, wellness centre, gym, cafe and new childcare centre.

More than 57,000 residents live within five kilometres of the proposed new pool and this number is expected to grow to more than 70,000 by 2036, the plan states. The estimated number of visits to the new pool would grow from 415,000 in the first year to 520,000 in a decade. Cr Colleen Gates said the plan would go out for community feedback during April. “It’s an exciting piece of work because the first aquatic strategy was done back in 2010 – it never got published for public viewing, which was a little frustrating at the time, and it didn’t put forward any conclusive recommendations of how Hobsons Bay can tackle accessibility for our residents to aquatic facilities and services,” she said. She said the proposed pool at Comben Reserve would directly service Altona Meadows, which comprised 25 per cent of Hobsons Bay’s total population. “I’ve used both Laverton Swim and Fitness Centre and Bayfit and don’t think it’s acceptable to expect our residents to drive to AquaPulse in Werribee or to MSAC [Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre] over the West Gate Bridge to access good quality aquatic facilities. “Everyone should have the right to be able to ride, walk or drive to their local facility.” Cr Michael Grech said the plan was a huge win for Wetlands ward and for Hobsons Bay. “The outdoor water play … will be a first in Hobsons Bay.”

State tries to hand over bridge By Goya Dmytryshchak Hobsons Bay council has labelled “completely ludicrous” a request to maintain a multi-million road bridge that will replace the Aviation Road level crossing at Laverton. The Level Crossing Removal Project (LCRP) has asked the council to “accept ownership and ongoing maintenance” of the bridge upon completion early next year. Councillors instead resolved not to accept responsibility for ongoing maintenance, which

they said would cost an estimated $145,000 a year. Councillor Colleen Gates told last week’s meeting that previously the council had a good relationship with LCRP, formerly known as the Level Crossing Removal Authority (LXRA).
“We’ve had a very good working relationship with LXRA up to this point so it’s a bit disappointing to hear that the works are not even yet complete and they’re already trying to pass the responsibility over the infrastructure onto council,” she said. “Having recently been privy to a number of agreements that they usually put forward to other entities, from the likes of VicRoads and VicTrack and all these other state government entities, and how very strict they are around managing liability and so forth, it’s completely
Hobsons Bay takes aim at waste Reusing seaweed, larger recycling bins for households and a container deposit system have been flagged as part of a new waste and litter management strategy for Hobsons Bay. It comes after Hobsons Bay was forced to send 175 tonnes of recyclables a week to landfill during the 26-day closure of SKM’s Laverton North facility. The council’s draft Waste and Litter Management Strategy, which has been released for community feedback, looks at ways of reducing waste and the amount of recyclables generated until 2025. Mayor Jonathon Marsden said the SKM shutdown had highlighted the need for locally-based action. “The recent recycling problems experienced by several councils have been a wake-up call that we cannot rely on recycling as the sole solution to reducing waste to landfill,” he said. Cr Colleen Gates said the strategy was aimed at reducing food waste and plastic, which made up 50 per cent of waste going to landfill. “That includes introducing a food waste collection via the green bins that are available within the community,” she said. “We will be looking to trial a container deposit scheme, probably something similar to what’s available in, say, Wyndham, through container deposit reverse vending machines.” The strategy is aimed to increase the amount of household waste diverted from landfill from 46 per cent to 54 per cent by June 2022. Other proposed actions include community education on avoiding single-use plastic and food waste, phasing out single-use products in council operations and investigating food waste recycling options for the commercial sector. Pop-up information stalls on the strategy will be at: Altona beach market on Tuesday, March 26, from 10am-1pm; Paine Reserve in Newport on Wednesday, April 3, from noon-3pm; and Commonwealth Reserve in Williamstown on Thursday, April 11, from 1-4pm. The council also resolved to repeat its request that the government improve the car park and facilities in and around Aircraft train station.
Plan set for Dennis Reserve A master plan for Dennis Reserve in Williamstown has been adopted by Hobsons Bay council, ending a long-running dispute between those who wanted more tennis courts and advocates for open space. The plan will be implemented in three stages. Stage one will include demolishing the former ladies bowling green and pavilion, Williamstown Central Tennis Club pavilion and two existing courts, and building four new courts. The second stage includes building a new central open-space area and upgrading the playground. Under the final stage, the Williamstown Senior Citizens Centre will be demolished and replaced with a multi-purpose community pavilion. An officer’s report presented to last week’s council meeting stated that 52 submissions had been received. “In total, 39 per cent of the feedback received was against the inclusion of four courts, 35 per cent was supportive and 26 per cent was ambivalent,” the report stated. A council assessment found that two new courts for Williamstown Central Tennis Club at Dennis Reserve was a short-term priority. Councillor Peter Hemphill told the meeting the public would be able to access the courts under the ‘book a court’ system. “The needs analysis showed that we are desperately short of tennis courts and it’s hard to ignore that report,” he said. Louise Larkin was inspired to host her first “Friend in Me” party after hearing the story of Melton boy Logan on the radio. No one had turned up to the sixth birthday of Logan, who has spina bifida.

“His mum called the radio station and stated that her little boy had never been to a party before due to his disabilities and social exclusion, so Fox FM put on a big party for Logan’s seventh birthday,” Ms Larkin said. “I thought to myself, that’s really sad and if that was my children that would be heartbreaking.” So, Ms Larkin decided to create an event for children who feel lonely and isolated. About 350 people attended. Last year, that number doubled. “I want to keep campaigning to make sure that no child is left behind,” Ms Larkin said. “We are here to teach our children about kindness and we do have to include people. “We want to bring together children from all walks of life, be it that they have a disability or they’re on the spectrum or maybe they just don’t have the confidence or they’re shy. “We also welcome children that are really confident and have a lot of friends … it’s literally an event for everybody.”

A logistics company has been fined $100,000 after a worker was injured at its Laverton North factory. Hellmann Worldwide Logistics Pty Ltd was convicted and fined at Sunshine Magistrates Court last month, after pleading guilty to a single charge of failure to provide a safe system of work by not having a traffic management system in place. The court heard that on August 2, 2016, the worker, who was wearing a high visibility vest, walked behind a reversing electric forklift which was being operated by a colleague. The worker was struck by the forklift and pushed to the ground and ended up under the piece of machinery. The worker sustained a fractured leg. Both of the workers were employees of a labour hire company. A WorkSafe investigation revealed there was no traffic management system in place at the time of the incident, and no physical barriers or other means of separating mobile machinery from workers walking on the factory floor. On top of a $100,000 fine, Hellmann Worldwide Logistics was also ordered to pay WorkSafe’s costs of $6555. A statement issued by WorkSafe last week said that after the forklift accident, Hellmann Worldwide Logistics had installed pedestrian walkways, defined by fixed barriers, at the factory. Buckley Street plans go to VCAT By Benjamin Millar The developer behind a multi-storey apartment proposal to house 1000 people on the former Transdev bus depot site in Seddon has turned to the state’s planning tribunal for approval. ANPLUS Developments last month lodged an application for review at the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal after Maribyrnong council failed to grant a permit within the prescribed time. The 1.4-hectare site at 43-57 Buckley
Street was sold in 2015 for a suburb record of $20.9 million. Plans lodged with Maribyrnong council last year seek approval to build 407 apartments and 15 townhouses across three buildings up to 12 storeys high – double the site’s maximum preferred height. The proposal includes retail tenancies and a 1700-square-metre open space on the south-western corner. A social impact assessment prepared by ASR Research states the development “will
create an important new public realm node and important new linkages in the north-east portion of Seddon”. But the plan attracted about 80 objections to the council from nearby residents. The main concerns relate to over-development, increased traffic, lack of carparking and overshadowing, as well as diminished privacy and an overall decline in local amenity. Resident Charles Hardman said the council’s failure to make a decision in time has pushed
the burden to argue against the proposal on to the community. He said the 422 new dwellings would come on top of at least 664 new dwellings, approved in recent years for within 450 metres of the site. Mr Hardman is calling on the council to make a decision before a practice day hearing listed for April 5, ahead of a compulsory conference on June 11 and a seven-day hearing from August 5. Objectors must lodge their statement of grounds by Friday, March 22.

When Megan Bridger-Darling threw her hat in the ring for election as a Maribyrnong councillor, she didn’t fancy her chances. So sure was she that she would miss out, she mentioned to a few people that if elected to council she would shave her head. The 2016 election came and went and her bid did indeed prove unsuccessful, leaving her hair intact. Until, that is, the departure of councillor Catherine Cumming to state Parliament late last year forced a vacancy in the Stony Creek ward. Ms Bridger-Darling was then elected to the council in January on a countback of votes. True to her word, the councillor sat in the chair at Satori Hair in Kingsville last Wednesday and nervously watched as the scissors, then clippers, went to work. Minutes later, her hair was off. The shave was not in vain – her hair will be donated to create a wig and her fundraising

Noise panels good to go By Goya Dmytryshchak Images of proposed multicoloured noise walls along the West Gate Tunnel corridor have been unveiled. The architect for the CPB John Holland joint venture has submitted images of acrylic panel noise walls to Hobsons Bay council for feedback. The walls will be at key road overpasses including Millers and Williamstown roads and Hyde Street. The designs were inspired by “rolling hills and sea waves”.
Also proposed are additional colour variations and panels in the concrete and acrylic noise wall designs to “create more vibrancy”, according to an officer’s report presented at last week’s council meeting. “The acrylic walls represent about 15 per cent of the total wall length for the West Gate Freeway section,” the report states. “The required project noise mitigation levels will still be achieved with this design … and the state architect has provided support to the design.” Council officers indicated their support for the design. Councillor Angela Altair told the

meeting that it was aesthically pleasing. “They do remind me … of the noise walls along the Geelong Bypass, although I think they’re even more colourful,” she said. “It’s going to be a reality so at least they need to be aesthetically pleasing, and I think these are.” However, councillor Tony Briffa expressed anger at the tunnel project. “The sound walls are going to be great while we’re waiting in traffic,” Cr Briffa said. “They can dress it up as much as they like but it is an absolute nightmare for the people in Brooklyn, Altona North, Altona.”
The roll-out of future public art projects across Maribyrnong will be guided by a new council strategy. The Public Art Strategy 2019-2029 will be used to determine the process for commissioning public art over the next decade. A council report in support of the strategy stated that public art is an important and necessary ingredient in the life of a modern city, with the power to provoke, inspire and transform a city. “It plays a strong role in shaping place, enhancing the environment, promoting connect to place, increasing perceptions of safety and supporting the reputation of a town or city,” it stated. “It is important to ensure public art in Maribyrnong is as inclusive and accessible as possible, and that the right resources and partnerships are in place to support artists and creative people to foster public art practice and the public art sector.” Maribyrnong has a collection of about 40 permanent public artworks dating from the late 1990s to the present, with an estimated value of more than $3 million. The strategy for new public art was formed in consultation with industry peak bodies, community organisations and traders associations, along with arts organisations based in Maribyrnong. The cost of implementing the strategy will be assessed during each year’s annual budget. Benjamin Millar

A century of living well By Goya Dmytryshchak Altona North’s Nellie McGrath today celebrates her 100th birthday. Nellie was born in Ireland before migrating to Australia with her husband, Myles, and their two children. She suffered asthma and had been told she needed to move to a warmer climate. The choices were South Africa or Australia. In 1960, Nellie and her family travelled by ship to Melbourne on the maiden voyage of the Fair Sky. Her first home was a Nissan hut at the Brooklyn migrant hostel with no running water, kitchen or bathroom. She secured a job selling personal insurance around Melbourne. It wasn’t any easy job. She had to walk for hours, often in 35C heat, knocking on doors in a bid to sell personal insurance. In 1960, another daughter, Mary, was born. Nellie then worked as a child minder, looking after six babies for 2 pounds a week, before moving to West Footscray, where she worked as a housekeeper at St Augustine’s presbytery in Yarraville. She also served meals in the canteen of West Footscray’s Southern Can Company. Nellie later moved to Williamstown and worked as a housekeeper at Customs House Hotel, before trying her hand at a local scallop factory off Nelson Place. In 1971, Nellie and Myles bought a house in Mason Street, Altona North. She met many people selling Avon products and serving in the school canteen of Mount St Joseph Girls’ College. One of her great loves is the Collingwood Football Club. In the past 59 years, she has rarely missed watching a game.

Council stalls re-zoning plan Controversial plans to allow development of up to four storeys and a multi-level carpark overlooking backyards in Newport have been put on hold. Hobsons Bay council last week resolved to start a heritage gap study for Newport and defer the consideration of the Newport Structure Plan to the May ordinary council meeting. As reported by Star Weekly Weekly, Newport residents of Durkin, Mirls, Walker and Derwent streets have joined forces to oppose proposed four-storey rezoning. A petition signed by 176 Newport residents was tabled at last week’s meeting, urging council to rezone streets west of the train station to neighbourhood residential zone with a two-storey limit. Residents also object to council plans to build a multi-level carpark on the existing carpark attached to Paine Reserve. Councillor Peter Hemphill told last week’s meeting that residents had raised some very valid concerns. “By essentially pushing this back a little bit, it doesn’t stop us from advocating for more parking options, for commuters in particular,” he said. “But we just need to make sure that we get it right, particularly from a heritage point of view.” The council must implement new zones introduced by the state government to manage residential growth. ruce and Heather Etherton enjoyed 25 years of inner-city high-rise living after moving from their farm in north-west Victoria. Pooch provides appy inspiration H
ow does a free app game that offers chances for personal financial rewards and also contributes to the welfare of your favourite wild animal at the same time sound? The game, Where’s Buzz, is the brainchild of Keilor Village resident Wally Miszewski, a retiree who has a deep concern for – and affinity – with animals. His dog, Buzz, was the inspiration behind the iPhone app. “I was blessed with a special and loving friend who gave me happiness for many years,” Wally says. “Buzz recently succumbed to an incurable illness and his passing got me thinking of all the animal world. “Thousands of animals are being mistreated, poached and hunted for money … displaced from their natural habitats to the point of extinction. “Where’s Buzz was developed as a tribute to him and to remind us all of the responsibility we have for our animal friends.” Wally harnessed the talents of a Sydney young gun as well as a talented programmer in Serbia who helped with coding and building the app, while Wally worked on the graphics and kept refining the app’s strategy and game play until, earlier this year, it was ready to go live. Where’s Buzz, with premium security built in, is available now, free from the Apple App Store. So how does Where’s Buzz work? “Firstly,” says Wally, “it’s a very
challenging search with in app games to speed up finding Buzz. Secondly, it’s a search where the players can combine efforts to find the location – and thus be in for a chance to win cash, ‘The Reward’, as well as have about one-third of any win directed to their favourite animal charity.
People who play Where’s Buzz are in control of where their donations go … “The search for Buzz – the essence of the game – could take weeks, and the more people on the hunt, the greater the reward for self and charity. ary and her partner have always been dog people. They’ve had Maggie, a curly coat retriever, for eight years now. They recently made the decision to become Seeing Eye Dogs puppy carers and were matched with four-month-old labrador Wafer, who is now a seven-month old puppy. “We’d gone through the puppy process before with Maggie, but going through it again as puppy carers with Wafer is really fun,” Mary says.

It is the carer’s responsibility to teach the pup some basic skills and to nurture and socialise them. In her first foray into the puppy carer program, Mary has found it challenging and rewarding in equal measure. “There’s a time element you have to consider … feeding, toileting, walking. It’s a change to our usual schedules, but we wouldn’t miss it,” she says. Maggie took some time to get used to having another pup in the house, but she came around to the idea. “I think she just wasn’t sure what this other creature was doing in the house,”

As can be imagined, this is very well received by co-workers. “Wafer is much-loved and so popular she alternates between our two offices,” Mary explains. “My partner works for Yarra Trams, so Wafer is receiving good
groundwork for training with public transport and large crowds, which is fantastic. My colleagues love the days that she’s in my office. “We sometimes stress about whether we’re doing the right thing in regards to Wafer’s training. We do, however, have a lovely trainer who visits us frequently and is only a phone call away.” At the end of the carer program, dogs
continue their training at a world-class facility in Kensington. From there, the sky’s the limit and one day a pup may become a fully-fledged Seeing Eye Dog. Porters puts pizzazz into Nelson Place P
utting a bold new stamp on Nelson Place restaurant precinct, Porters Williamstown opened its doors last September with little fanfare but much anticipation. Nelson Place has been ready for some time for a bit more glam, and Porters owners John and Zoey have risen to the challenge. Designed by the talented duo, the restaurant’s fitout is sophisticated, with much attention paid to comfort and ambience. Anchored by polished concrete floors, it has squashy green velvet Chesterfields to sink into, and fabric bucket chairs around the well-spaced tables. Timber batons along the stylish bar and on one wall add warmth and richness, while designer lightfittings shed mellow light. John and Zoey focused on delivering a diverse but delicately curated menu, with head chef Ryan Lane heading up the kitchen. Named as a leading sommelier last year, Raul Moreno Yague has curated the Porters wine list, and the beautiful bar serves all the top tipples. Zoey says Porters is a restaurant to tap into any time of day or night. “We serve breakfast, great coffee and lunch before dimming the lights for an intimate dinner or drinks at the bar,” she says. “We have the perfect setting for business meetings over breakfast or lunch, while in the evening, our guests will enjoy a sense of occasion dining. Also hitting high notes is the organic buckwheat and black rice porridge with kaffir lime, poached pear, toasted hazelnuts and honey. Lunch and dinner menus look after vegetarians and gluten-free dining, while
carnivores are spoilt for choice. Quail, duck and spatchcock dishes come in diverse styles. The quail has Italian leanings, the spatchcock is served mod-Aus style, while the red duck curry has aromatic Asian influences. Steak, lamb and seafood dishes also feature and each has delicious sides. Dessert? Yes. Four perfect choices, but it would be hard to go past lemongrass and
ginger-infused panna cotta with pineapple, kaffir lime and lychee salsa. The bar serves stylish smaller meals and pastries, while the sophisticated all-hours ambience comes free. The venue taps into Yarraville’s past with a groovy revamp of the old Dickies Towels warehouse. The Gators have much stronger depth after last year’s transition season, but will still need time to find their groove after such a high turnover of players. “Last year was a rebuilding year and we ended up with 10 wins with a very committed group of players,” Radoslovic said. “We had a bunch of soldiers, but were missing a little bit of star power. “We’ve got three recruits from higher divisions, plus Joey returning, so it’s going to take that little bit of time to get everything gelling perfectly.” The Gators will need to find their rhythm before this weekend’s double header against Sherbrooke Suns away on Saturday night and Wallan Panthers at home on Sunday, otherwise they could be playing catch-up for a while.
in The doGhouse ■ The roller coaster ride that is the AFL season gets under way this week and the Bulldogs have a difficult first-up opponent in Sydney. The players will be wearing the ‘Thor’-inspired jumpers when they run onto Marvel Stadium, and why not? It is a marketing exercise, pure and simple. The club is not changing the colours, deleting the past or rewriting the theme song. I am a traditionalist in many ways but I don’t see the long term harm in this and if it becomes an annual occurrence, then so be it. The harsh commercial realities of running a football club do have to be factored in sometimes. ■ All football fans, regardless of the club you support, want blokes such as Dale Morris playing for as long as he can. His latest injury setback was felt by all who love the game and the warriors who beat the odds to play it. Dale plays footy because he loves it, and that love has driven him to – and through – all sorts of adversity. It has also piloted him to achieve the ultimate success – an AFL premiership. E.J Whitten’s famous on-ground speech in his last game focused on guts and determination, and that befits the man who wears the number 38 for the Bulldogs. Like all football fans, I hope he wears it again soon. ■ Werribee Cricket Club has every right to be filthy about missing out on playing a final at home, and Werribee Football Club has every right to want to host practice games on its home ground. The problem of course is it is the same ground, wanted for the same time. Shared grounds will become a thing of the past if the land becomes available for sports to go it alone. Werribee Football Club has not had a home practice game for a decade and has a multi-million dollar facility which hosted the game last Friday night in front of a good crowd. Werribee Cricket Club has enjoyed great results on its home track this year and lost that enormous advantage when forced to relocate. We all know the problem and the solution. Fix it. ■ Werribee will be happy that its third XI have made the grand final after a gutsy outright win over Brunswick last weekend. It was a low scoring game that was hanging in the balance but Werribee took control. Mixed fortunes for Hoppers Crossing with the seconds missing out, unable to get the 220 for victory, but the fourths chasing down 223 to win.

Abbey on the upswing Williamstown Women’s Lacrosse Club rising star Abbey O’Mahony will be the pulse of Australia’s midfield at the under-19 Women’s Lacrosse World Championships in Canada later this year. O’Mahony impressed the national selectors with her starring role in Victoria’s title-winning run at the under-18 Australian Lacrosse Association National Championships last year. The 18-year-old was elated to receive a call-up to her first national team. “Getting to wear Australia across your chest, it’s unbelievable,” O’Mahony said. “Representing your country is not something a lot of people get to do, so it’s exciting and I’m really looking forward to it.” O’Mahony’s performances for Victoria earnt All Star honours at the nationals. The Williamstown resident had to do it all for the Vics in the midfield, taking the draws, being alert on defence and providing an attacking option. She used her height to win the aerial balls and speed and endurance to work up and back.
As the captain of the Victorian team, she set a fine example for her teammates to follow. O’Mahony capped off an incredible tournament individually with a title and that is what she wanted above all. “Being able to captain the winning team, the national championship team, it was an even better feeling,” she said. “It’s just a great honour.” O’Mahony got her start in lacrosse at the age of 12. She was introduced to the game at Williamstown Women’s – the club she plays for in state league. Colleen Hunter has had a big influence over her in her early years in lacrosse. Impressing from a young age, O’Mahony went on to represent Victoria’s under-15 team at numerous tournaments. After showing tremendous leadership on tours, she was appointed skipper of the state under-18 side, which she led to victory. O’Mahony never changed the way she approached the game or how she presented herself on game day.

“I was myself the whole time,” she said. “I thought, if I’ve been selected [as captain], I’m doing that already [demonstrating leadership qualities], so I just kept doing what I was doing and it all came naturally.

Williamstown is getting back into the swing of things ahead of a new Victorian Football League season. The Seagulls faced North Melbourne in a practice match at Canning Reserve in Avondale Heights on Saturday, showcasing a number of recruits. The signs were good for the Andrew Collins-coached Seagulls, winning the match by five points. Nick Ebinger kicked four for the Seagulls in a low scoring game, while Sam McLarty was a standout in defence. Williamstown’s next pre-season test will be away to Sandringham at Trevor Barker Beach Oval on Saturday 11.30am. Meanwhile, long-time rivals Williamstown and Port Melbourne have announced they will be competing for the Johnson-Callahan Cup, named in honour of club legends Frank Johnson (Port Melbourne) and Gerry Callahan (Williamstown).
By Lance Jenkinson Altona Roosters have transformed from the underdogs to what punters would call a good thing at the halfway mark of the four-day Victorian Turf Cricket Association division 2 grand final. The Roosters have been the hunters for most of the summer, sneaking into the finals in fourth spot and having to hit the road for their semi-final and grand final battles, but they now have the target on their back for the most important weekend in the season. After bowling hot favourites Glenroy out for just 65, the Roosters piled on the runs to post 205 for a first innings lead of 140. Glenroy’s outlook was not looking much brighter as it went to stumps on day two on 2-23, still 117 runs in arrears. Roosters’ captain Ash Peters could not have envisaged a better start to the big dance. “Glenroy have been the benchmark,” he said. “We knew we had to bowl and field well yesterday, so it was an awesome effort from the team. “We just backed each other in whatever the scenario. “If any chances came, we’d take them, all our bowlers got us off to a good start early and kept the ball rolling.” It truly was a team effort with the ball for Altona Roosters as every one of the Roosters six bowlers made a meaningful contribution. Off spinner Sanjaya Fernando was the pick of the bunch though, finishing with incredible figures of 4-5 off 8.2 overs. “He turned the game into our favour a little bit more,” Peters said. “He always bowls to a plan, gives a bit of flight and then he’ll throw in a quicker one. “He’s very reliable for us.” Paceman Leigh Lewis set up the day for Altona with 2-12 off 10 overs. Peters was similarly effective for the Roosters with his medium pace, taking 2-16 off 11. Chris Dine chipped in to take 2-11 off six. Small run chases can be tricky in cut-throat finals, but Altona passed the target with confidence. The Roosters were three down when they began to amass a first innings lead. Fernando was the Rooster who rubbed the most salt into the Glenroy wounds with a dashing 71 off 122 balls. If the Roosters go on to win the flag, he will be the most valuable player in the grand final. “To take 4-5 and make 71 was incredible,” Peters said. “He steadied the ship when we lost a few wickets. “He just played to his strength and hit the bad balls and respected the good ones.” Glenroy faced 20 overs late on day two to finish on 2-23.
“I wanted to be there for everyone and make it as enjoyable as I could.” O’Mahony is looking forward to her first overseas competition. She is eager to get to Canada to take on the world’s best players in her age group, though she knows there is plenty of toil to be undertaken by the squad in the lead up. “I am counting down the days, but we still have a lot of work to do before then,” O’Mahony said. O’Mahony is the March nominee for the Don Deeble Rising Star award. The award, hosted by the Sunshine Western Region Sports Club and Star Weekly, recognises young athletes from the western suburbs who have achieved outstanding results at state and or national levels. O’Mahony will receive $1000 and other prizes, donated by the Yarraville Club Cricket Club, to assist her in achieving her sports goals.

Back-to-back wins has seen Altona Magic move up to mid-table in the National Premier League. The Magic defended their home turf in Saturday evening in a 2-1 win over Oakleigh Cannons at Paisley Park Soccer Complex. Michiel Hemmen and Sam Mitchinson scored for the Magic before Joe Guest found a consolation for the Cannons in the second half. A confident Altona will trek to Kingston City for a rare Monday night game in round six. Meanwhile, the Football Victoria state league season will open this weekend. In state league 1, Altona City will play host to Essendon Royals at H.C. Kim Reserve on Saturday evening, while earlier in the day Yarraville Glory will travel to play Brimbank Stallions.

Malith Cooray, the quickest bowler for Altona, did some late damage with 2-13 off six. While the Roosters are in the box seat to win the grand final, Peters knows the threat that Glenroy still poses, particularly with the ball. The Roys star spinner Steve Goodwin, who has taken 61 wickets this summer, still looms
as a match-winner if his side can get any sort of lead. “He had 55 wickets coming into the game and took another six-for this game,” Peters said. “He’s an incredible spinner, so it would be nice to bowl them out without batting again, but we’ll still back ourselves to get the runs if we have to bat again.”
Western Bulldogs finished rock bottom of AFL Women’s conference A after winning just two of their seven matches in the premiership defence. The Bulldogs lost their final round game to Carlton in a thriller by three points at the Whitten Oval on Sunday. Attention at the kennel will now turn to the AFL season, which begins this weekend. Western Bulldogs will be in action in a cracker on Saturday night against the Sydney Swans at Marvel Stadium.
