Planetarium stars reborn Take a journey out of this world when the Melbourne Planetarium at Scienceworks in Spotswood reopens next month after a $1.2 million upgrade. A powerful new projection system will launch a new show, Moonbase ONE ONE, on March 9. Digital production designer Warik Lawrance said the six-projector system would be complemented by state-of-the-art LED lighting. “Not only will the image be three times brighter, but with 36 million pixels on the dome, it will be three times sharper,” he said. “This will look amazing and help to produce the most accurate and clear stars possible.” Moonbase ONE is a groundbreaking new production narrated by Australian geek culture enthusiast Stephanie “Hex” Bendixsen. It centres on Bendixsen’s character, a virtual reality games developer struggling to figure out what is going wrong with her new game on a full-moon night. Councils outsource care Services for some of the west’s most vulnerable residents will be outsourced following a decision by Maribyrnong and Hobsons Bay councils. The councils will sub-contract domestic assistance, personal care and in-home respite for the elderly and people with a disability, due to possible changes in federal funding. Maribyrnong councillors endorsed a decision to outsource in-home support at an in-camera meeting last Tuesday. Staff were informed of the intended new arrangements the next day. At the end of Hobsons Bay’s ordinary council meeting, also last Tuesday, chief executive Aaron van Egmond received a rescission
motion signed by two councillors to reverse a decision made in-camera. Star Weekly understands the signatures were from deputy mayor Michael Grech and councillor Tony Briffa, who had earlier voted against the home care tender being decided behind closed doors. By law, a rescission motion must be heard at the next scheduled council meeting or alternatively at a special council meeting. Hobsons Bay mayor Jonathon Marsden called a special meeting, closed to the public, for 9am last Saturday. Victory, acting for the Australian Services Union, has questioned the legality of the Saturday meeting. In a letter sent to Hobsons Bay mayor Jonathon Marsden, Mr Victory said the meeting breached the Local Government Act because seven days notice was not given. The council received legal advice that the meeting was valid. State and federal MPs earlier this month urged both councils not to outsource home care, given the likelihood of a federal Labor government which would guarantee funding. During public question time, a number of people implored Maribyrnong council to keep the services in-house but their pleas failed to sway the councillors. Maribyrnong mayor Martin Zakharov said

the council would continue to manage the funding and quality assurance processes for these services until at least 2020. “We are committed to minimising change and maintaining both quality and continuity of care,” he said. “The central objective of this process has been to appoint a high quality provider, with a comprehensive service offering, who will ensure the continuing availability of services to support people to live as independently as possible within their own home. “The decision to enter this subcontracting arrangement is based on providing the best support possible for our clients, community and employees as the aged-care and disability service systems are reformed by the federal government.”

Bill shock prompts rates review Maribyrnong council is poised to make sweeping changes to its property rating system despite fears the move could drive up already skyrocketing rates bills. Councillors last week provided in principle approval to move from the net annual value (NAV) rating system to the more common capital improved value (CIV) system. The decision follows an unprecedented number of formal objections by ratepayers to property revaluations last year – 648 review
requests dwarfing the typical objection number of less than 100. Council received more than 1500 additional inquiries about rating levels. Star Weekly has reported concerns from residents whose rates bill more than doubled despite the 2.25 per cent rate cap. A Yarraville pensioner told last week’s council meeting she would prefer to go to jail than pay her rates bill, which grew by more than $1000 last year. “We are not millionaires, we are normal everyday people,” she said.
A festival with a catch
Maribyrnong is one of only six councils using the NAV system, which reflects the net annual rental value of a property, whereas the CIV system represents the value of a property including the land and improvements. Maribyrnong mayor Martin Zakharov gave in-principle support for the change, but warned moving to the CIV system may leave residential ratepayers worse off. “This is the third time I’ve seen this council review this issue and the two previous times it was clearly better for residents to stick with NAV,” he said.
“At the moment, basically, Highpoint shopping centre is subsidising our rates.” Cr Sarah Carter said the rating system is broken and needed a refresh to get a fairer system. Cr Mia McGregor said although people were feeling rate shock, the system has “shown itself to be more equitable than other systems”. The council will consult with residential, commercial and industrial ratepayers, including online surveys and public forums. A report will then be prepared for the May ordinary council meeting.
Body found badly burnt
Slow Fish Festival is coming to Spotswood, hosted by Slow Food Melbourne. There’ll be cooking demonstrations by some of Australia’s best-loved chefs, stalls with fresh and cooked seafood, local craft beer and wine and talks by fishers, marine scientists, distributors, chefs, cooks and consumers. Festival-goers will learn about sustainable seafood, ocean health and the Australian fishing industry. Ashley Davis, from Seddon’s Copper Pot, will be among local chefs doing demonstrations. “My philosophy on food is to find the best produce I can as close as possible to where the restaurant’s situated, and to treat it with respect,” he said. “We use a lot of local farmers that deliver direct to our door, and off the back of that we try to be responsible about our part in the food chain.” Some of his fish is sourced from Williamstown’s Phil McAdam, who is the third generation of his family to work as a commercial fisher in the bay. The festival will have lessons in foraging for edible seaweed, speed dating a fisherman and oyster shucking. The headline speaker is Matthew Evans, star of SBS’s Gourmet Farmer and What’s the Catch, who will do Q-and-A sessions and cooking demonstrations, as well as sharing tips and tricks for preparing seafood at home. Food options will range from delicacies such as sea urchin and abalone to old-fashioned fish and chips. Slow Fish Festival will be on Sunday, March 3, from 10am-4pm at the Spotswood Kingsville RSL and grounds, 16 Mary Street, Spotswood. Entry costs $10 or $5 for children under-16; $25 for families. Confronting details of a Ballarat woman’s death have been heard in court as it was revealed her body was badly burnt before being discovered by police. Altona man Shaye Kotiau, 22, appeared in the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Wednesday last week charged with the murder of Tamara Farrell, 31. The court heard Ms Farrell’s remains were found dumped alongside a country road about 300 kilometres away near Sale, wrapped in a partially burnt sheet. Police applied to the court to obtain a saliva sample from Mr Kotiau and a physical examination to check for marks or injuries to his body. The court heard they’d both previously been refused or unable to be obtained. Detective Senior Constable Dustin Sheppard said “matter” had been discovered on a seized tarpaulin and car that police needed to test. Magistrate Charlie Rozencwajg granted applications for both the saliva sample and the physical examination. Footage from CCTV cameras and potential phone tracking of the accused’s movements on the day of the killing are also set to be examined as part of the investigation. Kotiau’s lawyer Lauren Cassimatis asked that her client be seen by a nurse for a second time with concerns over his mental health and vulnerability in custody. Kotiau is due to reappear in court in June. Kotiau’s 19-year-old sister Kieahn has been charged with being an accessory to murder. Last week she faced Latrobe Valley Magistrates Court where she was released on bail subject to conditions.

Modern take on classic A reworked telling of an ancient stage classic is about to make its world premiere in Footscray. Performer Deborah Leiser-Moore will deliver Medea: Kaddish for the Children, a re-imagining of the tale of one of western literature’s most iconic and tragic figures. The performance stems from Leiser-Moore’s artistic residencies at both Footscray Community Arts Centre and the Jewish Museum Australia. Leiser-Moore draws on the classic Euripides Medea text, but in a way that rejects the patriarchal view of Medea as a monstrous witch. Rather than bringing to stage a straight retelling of the ancient text, the performance also weaves in other elements including the
lyrics of Ian Dury and the Blockheads and the Kaddish – the Jewish mourning prayer. “A lot of my work I bring in my Jewishness, I don’t mean to but it comes out in it,” she said. Appearing opposite Leiser-Moore will be her life partner Richard Moore, the former director of the Melbourne International Film Festival returning to the stage after 20 years. Leiser-Moore said the work is very visual and physical, creating a strong interplay between images and the body. Medea: Kaddish for the Children will be at FCAC from February 28 to March 9. Residents hit by recycling mess By Goya Dmytryshchak Hobsons Bay residents are being urged to hold onto their recycling to stop it going to landfill during the closure of two SKM Services recycling facilities. Hobsons Bay is among 20 Victorian councils affected after the Environment Protection Authority banned SKM from accepting recyclable waste at its Coolaroo and Laverton North sites on February 15, due to fire risks. It is unknown when the recycling centres will reopen.
Maribyrnong council has confirmed that its recycling service is unaffected by the closure and that its contractor Visy will not be sending recycling to landfill. Hobsons Bay council expects to send about 175 tonnes of recycling collected last week to the Cleanaway Melbourne Regional Landfill at Ravenhall. Mayor Jonathon Marsden said the situation was being monitored day by day. “We understand that sending recyclables to landfill comes as a big disappointment to our community,” he said.
“We share this disappointment with them and we know it doesn’t sit right with many of our residents. “Last week, we actively encouraged our community to give their recycling collection a miss if their bins weren’t full and store their recyclables for the next collection so we can reduce the volume going to landfill.” The council’s recycling contract with SKM expires in February 2020. “Like other affected councils, we are working with all stakeholders, including SKM Recycling, the state and federal governments
and the Metropolitan Waste and Resource Recovery Group (a government agency that supports 31 metropolitan councils), in order to find an ongoing solution and assess our longer term options for our recycling service,” Cr Marsden said. “The Metropolitan Waste and Resource Recovery Group has proposed to collectively tender recycling contracts for councils. “The main goal of this work would be to attract more providers and we will watch this space closely to determine if it’s a viable option.” SKM did not respond.
Take two on hard rubbish Hobsons Bay residents will soon be able to pay for a second annual hard rubbish collection as the council battles illegally dumped rubbish that’s costing about $400,000 a year. The council currently offers one free hard rubbish collection per financial year. Last week’s council meeting heard the council would trial a second user-paid service next financial year. Strategic development acting director Kathleen McClusky told the meeting that residents would be charged a fee that was cheaper than taking rubbish to the closest tip. “At this point we will be working out a flat rate,” she said. “We will ensure that it’s cheaper than taking a car load to the Wyndham landfill.” An average trailer load of rubbish taken to the Wyndham landfill costs $60-$104 dollars. Ms McClusky said during the trial, the council would be monitoring whether less
rubbish was being illegally dumped. Hobsons Bay mayor Jonathon Marsden said illegally dumped rubbish was costing ratepayers about $400,000 a year for the council to clean up. “We maintain a database of dumped rubbish hot spots, which helps us with our monitoring, but ultimately it comes down to people taking responsibility for their own waste,” he said. “Most people do the right thing but a small number consider our public open spaces and their nature strip to be places where they can dump their unwanted items, often large objects that could have easily been collected through council’s hard waste service.” The council also runs annual electronic waste and household chemical collections. place for people and animals to avoid contact with the water. The EPA is continuing to investigate potential breaches of the Environment Protection Act,
but is yet to issue any fines to the site’s owner or operator despite the environmental damage. Melbourne Water has removed about 70 million litres of contaminated water and 12370889-CG45-17
Six months on from the largest industrial fire in Victoria in decades, mystery still shrouds the cause of the toxic Tottenham blaze. The August 30 warehouse inferno was deemed suspicious by the MFB, triggering an investigation by Victoria Police arson and explosive squad detectives. A coronial investigation is also under way into the fire, which sent a plume of toxic smoke over the western suburbs and badly contaminated nearby Stony Creek. The United Firefighters Union has raised “serious concerns about health risks to firefighters” exposed to dangerous chemicals and toxic smoke, as well as concerns about public health and safety. The union is asking the coroner to investigate whether the dumping of waste chemicals and other unwanted goods in rented factories and warehouses has become a “new business model” putting firefighters and the public at risk. Prior to the fire, the warehouse had been identified as “a danger to the life” of residents and occupants, according to internal Maribyrnong council documents released under Freedom of Information laws. Authorities say the 14,000-square-metre Tottenham blaze was so fierce investigations may never be able to determine exactly what chemicals were being illegally stored. Analysis of sample materials indicates the presence of hydrocarbons including benzene, toluene and xylene, along with other compounds, including industrial solvents, detergents and copper. More than 2500 dead fish and birds were collected from the lower reaches of Stony Creek in the wake of the fire and warnings remain in

removed 170 cubic metres of contaminated sediment from the creek. A further 500 cubic metres of sediment has been identified for removal in coming weeks.

Triple murderer jailed 30 years

Take two for university By Benjamin Millar Victoria University’s latest intake includes students giving a whole new meaning to a double degree. Twins Mia and Ava Duggan-Sorbara have both enrolled in a bachelor of music, while Melanie and Jessica Kirjakovski are both undertaking a bachelor of biomedicine on the pathway to becoming doctors.
Mia said she and her sister are no strangers to performing together, a partnership that stretches back to combining their voices in song at their grandmother’s funeral when they were aged 13. “Nonna always loved hearing us sing and it was really her who launched our singing as a profession,” she said. The talented twins have added to their singing skills by teaching themselves to play guitar and piano. The pair also write their own
pop-folk music, performing at cafes and bars as well as weddings and funerals. Melanie and Jessica Kirjakovski both have their sights set on working in the medical field, ideally as doctors. Melanie said the pair has always enjoyed the same hobbies and interests and bond over a shared love of drawing, horses and music. “It’s great to have a sister who is also a best friend,” she said.
Resentful, jealous and armed with $2 of petrol in a plastic container, Darren Clover knew his ex-girlfriend and her new partner had little prospects of escape from the small room they slept in. There was only one door to the alcove of the old Kinnears rope factory in Footscray, and Clover knew Tanya Burmeister and David Griffiths were in the habit of securing the door with a chain each night. The couple occasionally had with them Ms Burmeister’s 15-year-old daughter, Zoe, in a small space crowded with bedding and clothes. All three were inside the alcove about 11.25pm on March 1, 2017 when Clover poured the petrol outside the door, set it alight and walked away to get a train. Mr Griffiths, 39, Ms Burmeister, 32, and Zoe all died despite the attempts of passers-by to douse the fire and the quick arrival of firefighters. Clover, 54, was on Monday jailed for 30 years after pleading guilty to three counts of murder. He will be eligible for parole after 24 years. Supreme Court Justice Jane Dixon found Clover would have known those inside had little chance of getting out once the fire took hold and that there was a strong prospect they would be seriously injured. “The cruel use of fire as a weapon deserves condemnation and harsh punishment,” Justice Dixon said. – Adam Cooper/The Age

As reported by Star Weekly last year, Hobsons Bay council is proposing new residential zones that will enable development of more than four storeys in some neighbourhoods. It has flagged a multi-storey carpark on the existing carpark attached to Paine Reserve that is accessed from Derwent Street. The council must implement new zones, as directed by the state government, to manage residential growth.

Newport’s Kate Fraser said the residents of Durkin, Mirls, Walker and Derwent streets had joined forces to oppose the moves, collecting about 100 signatures on a petition. “We moved to Newport for its quiet surrounds, appeal of its period homes and strong community bond,” she said. “The fight to save our community is just beginning.” Another resident, Lisa Coulthard, said the carpark proposal was outrageous and would be an eyesore. “It’s unprecedented in the area,” she said. “There are more appropriate sites for a multi-storey carpark that won’t adversely affect residents … as ratepayers we would like to explore these sites with council.” Mayor Jonathon Marsden said the Paine Reserve carpark had been identified in the

70 years on and going strong in the Altona community While very few local residents would remember an Altona without the Mobil Refinery, the positive contribution it has made over the past 70 years would have been felt by many. 2019 marks the 70th anniversary of operations at the Altona Refinery which commenced with the production of lubricants and bitumen in 1949. Built at an initial construction cost of £1,000,000, widely acknowledged as an enormous investment at the time, the Altona Refinery was considered the most modern of its kind in the world. A reputation which was bolstered in 1955 when the refinery undertook a £20,000,000 project to extend its product range into motor vehicle fuels and, in 1956, produce Australia’s first locally made aviation gasoline. Today, the Mobil Altona Refinery continues to thrive, contributing approximately $270 million to the Victorian economy every year. As a pillar of the Australian transportation industry, Mobil Altona also supplies approximately half of Victoria’s fuel needs. Mobil Altona Refinery General Manager Riccardo Cavallo lauded the continued growth of the refinery but noted that people need to look beyond the raw figures to truly appreciate its impact which extends far beyond fuel production. “70 years of operation in Altona represents a great deal of investment across many fields. It means decades of supporting the livelihoods of local residents through creating jobs and the continued support of small businesses in Altona. “It also means 70 years of assisting local charities as well as community and environmental groups to ensure Altona remains a friendly, clean and prosperous neighbourhood. “Furthermore, we have a proud history of investing in Altona’s most valuable resource, its children, through a range of educational initiatives such as the Mobil’s Bright Future grants program,” said Riccardo. 70th anniversary notwithstanding, 2019 is also a unique and exciting time for the Altona Refinery which is currently in the process of expanding its capacity through the construction of a new 100 million litre storage tank which will help it meet Australia’s growing demand for fuel. “As we celebrate the past, we also look forward with optimism towards a bright future for the Altona Refinery and the community as a whole,” said Riccardo.

Victoria University’s long-running enterprise agreement dispute will continue after two thirds of staff rejected the latest offer from management. Staff walked off the job for 24 hours last October in a dramatic escalation of their industrial dispute with VU management, as 77 per cent of voters rejected the offer on the table at the time. Management last week called a fresh ballot, voted down with a 66.6 per cent “No” vote. The ballot was the second to bypass the National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU). The NTEU argues that under the proposed agreement, VU would have the lowest pay increase for Victorian universities for the period 2017-2021. The union also claimed the agreement would leave VU senior lecturers with the lowest projected pay rate by 2023. But a VU spokeswoman said the new offer includes an improved salary offer “extremely competitive” with other universities. She said a 10.7 per cent increase in the ‘Yes’ vote since the first vote signals a shift closer to an agreement. “Victoria University is committed to keeping the dialogue going … to ensure that the new enterprise agreement meets the expectations and aspirations of staff as well as supporting the transformation and sustainability agenda of the university over the next four years.” Benjamin Millar

Tunnel work leaves ‘death trap’ By Goya Dmytryshchak A Brooklyn mother has labelled Millers Road “an emerging pedestrian death trap” due to West Gate Tunnel works. Alexia Boland Herrick said she feared pedestrians could be hurt or killed at “risky and unsafe” crossing points where Millers Road intersected with Paringa Road and Primula Avenue. She said tunnel works had resulted in dangerous diversions forcing pedestrians onto the road. “For anyone that’s got a walking stick, a wheelchair or a pram or anything like
that, it’s just so super dangerous,” Ms Boland Herrick said. “The only way I could get across … was by actually stepping onto the road and by drivers actually stopping … because there was no way to get across. “This major poor planning error even goes as far as to invite local pedestrians to somehow divert to other closed pathways, leaving them effectively stranded in the process.” Hobsons Bay mayor Jonathon Marsden said the council had written to the West Gate Tunnel contractors, CPB John Holland, after learning of Ms Boland Herrick’s concerns and
backed her call for urgent action. “We are hopeful that these current issues will be actioned immediately and will keep monitoring conditions,” he said. West Gate Tunnel Project spokeswoman Kim Payne urged people to contact them if they saw issues that needed to be addressed. “During construction there will be changes to how people move about and we will make sure they are safe and as easy to use as possible,” she said. “We recognise there may be times of inconvenience during construction and we thank people for their patience.”

Stephen Street goes collective By Benjamin Millar A ‘collective’ housing style development is planned for a Yarraville site currently occupied by an aged care home. Developer Excelon Group plans to build 55 apartments and townhouses at 42-54 Stephen Street in a mix of two and three-storey buildings over a 54-space basement carpark. A planning report submitted to Maribyrnong council in support of the project stated the proposal was modelled on developments such
as Berlin’s ‘Big Yard’ and the Heller Street project in Brunswick, with “emphasis on environmental performance, architectural quality and community integration facilitated through a centralised, landscaped ‘spine’.” Jointly designed by architectural firms 6 Degrees Architects and Kennedy Nolan Architects, the proposal includes five blocks that “incorporate best practice sustainable principles and integrate the idea of sharing and social connections”. The 4230 square-metre site is currently
occupied by the 60-place Japara Yarra West Aged Care Home, which would be demolished. A Japara spokesman said the aged care residents are being offered places at a new facility they hope to have built in Newport by mid-2020.

Misconceptions about Islam will be challenged when the Australian Islamic Centre at Newport welcomes the public for Victorian Mosque Open Day. Designed by world-renowned Sydney architect Glenn Murcutt in collaboration with local architect Hakan Elevli, the prayer centre in Blenheim Road has attracted world acclaim. Part of the reason for international interest is the involvement of Mr Murcutt, the only Australian to have won the Pritzker Architecture Prize, the ‘Nobel Prize’ for architecture. MY PLACE Matt Bodiam and his wife Melanie have been the driving force behind Footscray’s beloved music venue The Reverence, which is calling last drinks this Saturday. He speaks with Benjamin Millar. What’s your connection with Footscray? I was a Bacchus Marsh kid, but actually went to school at Footscray City secondary from year 10 onwards. My mum worked in mental health in Footscray plaza for years and years, so I spent a fair bit of time in Footscray from early on. I rented a house in Footscray after school finished and really only moved out of Footscray to help my wife run a city band venue. What are your favourite local places? To’s Bakery, Happy River Cafe (RIP) and the man at Footscray post office – I’m going to miss him! Why did you open The Reverence and what will you miss most?
What have been your most memorable musical moments there? Too many to really mention! Some internationals were amazing to host – Jeff Rosenstock, Gorilla Biscuits, Samiam, the list goes on. Probably the most rewarding thing is watching Australian bands that start off playing to no one at the Rev go on to huge things all over the world. It makes you proud, kind of like a dad, hahaha.

We really just loved being involved in live music and the arts, and after our last venue finished up we couldn’t wait to sink our teeth into another one. We will definitely miss the community that has gathered around us since opening in Footscray in 2012. How did you become the drummer for The Smith Street Band?
What is something people may be surprised to learn about you?
The rest of the band are all super close long-term friends of mine. Many years ago I recorded their first record in my little recording studio above the Arthouse. They were needing a drummer for the 2017/18 Falls Festival tour and they asked me, to which I obliged.
I was two belts away from a black belt in karate when I was 10.

What’s next? Mel and I are both planning on a bit of a rest as we haven’t really had any time off in the last seven years.
Our little one Ollie has just started school, so that’s been a bit of a challenge. Trying to run a pub and be up in the morning for school is definitely tough. Give us your best pitch Maribyrnong community groups and clubs are being urged to hone their ‘pitch’ to score valuable funding. The annual Seddon Community Bank “Community Pitch” invites Maribyrnong groups to pitch a project for a chance to share in a pool of funding donated by businesses based in the area. The initiative has delivered about $85,000 to the community since launching in 2015. Last year’s event distributed almost $30,000 and organisers have set an ambitious $40,000 target to make this year’s the biggest yet. Bank branch owner Inner West Community Enterprises is looking for 18 community groups, sporting clubs, schools and organisations to present a three minute ‘pitch’,
as well as Community Pitch Partners to donate the funding. IWCE spokeswoman Suzanne Saunders said while the funds are important, the event is about more than just money. “The event brings people together, instilling a sense of pride in who they are and what they do,” she said. “Sharing real stories from real people and building strong community partnerships is half the fun.” Community groups will need to complete an application form and provide a short pitch video by April 1. FB: How would you rate yourself as a cook? RQ: I’d say I can hold my own without being an expert. I went through a stage, I think, when my wife went back to work after our first kid and I was in the kitchen quite a bit, so through necessity I sort of learned to cook a little bit. It’s been good. I like playing around with some foods. FB: Is the kitchen somewhere you feel comfortable? RQ: Yeah, yeah, definitely. Something like a big, heavy roast I’m probably not great at. (When) I had my wife over before we were married, I attempted to make dinner. I cooked a roast chook. I was wondering why it was taking so long to cook. I took it out and thought ‘Look, stuff it. It’s been in long enough’ and realised I’d cooked it upside down. It was actually really juicy - obviously the fillets are at the bottom instead of the top. I turned it over and it was moist and tasty, so it worked out OK. I might be onto something, because I’ve accidentally done it since as well. FB: What is your signature dish? RQ: It’s something that my dad used to cook. It’s called Crispy Chicken Casserole. It’s not the greatest for you, but like all things that aren’t great for you, it tastes bloody great. You get a roast chook, you pull it apart, you add mayo, slivered almonds, cheese, celery and spring onion, put it in a baking dish and cover it with Smith’s potato chips, all crushed up. You put it in the oven and away you go. It comes out and you serve it with chips or potato gems, depending on how healthy you’re feeling. You probably need to throw some veggies in there as well, but we never did. FB: What do you like to drink? RQ: With it? In summer, a glass of Pino Grigio whilst I’m cooking and then another one with dinner. Through the winter stages, you marry it up with red meat … you start with a Pino, and if there’s only half a bottle of Pino left, you have that and then you go onto a Shiraz. FB: Which five people would you most like to invite to dinner? RQ: Andy Lee and his brother Cam, Matthew Richardson, Scott Pippin and my dad, who passed away 10 years ago. FB: Do you have a kitchen tip for us? RQ: Yes, it was one I got from my dad. When you’re cooking, if you’ve got time to at least rinse some things, if you can, wash them before you sit down and eat. Do as much as the cleaning up as possible if you can juggle it while cooking and/or serving. My other tip – which my sister does – is that she cooks and her husband does the dishes.
ROB’S CRISPY CHICKEN CASSEROLE Rob’s kindly provided us with his dad’s special recipe if you’d like to give it a crack. Let us know how you go! INGREDIENTS: 1 whole roast chook (torn apart) A few celery sticks, chopped A few spring onions, chopped 2/3 to a whole jar of mayonnaise 2 and a half cups slivered almonds (slightly browned) 2 to 3 handfuls grated cheese METHOD: Gather contents in a big bowl. Mix together with clean hands until it’s consistently mixed. Put in baking dish. Crunch up one large packet full of Smith’s Original chips and sprinkle chips over the top. Bake at 180 degrees for around 35 to 45 minutes. Serve with chips or potato gems.

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir gets a flavour kick out of all things Malaysian On the Panjali menu, there’s dosas, vadai, dal and curries. But you’ll also find roti canai, mee goreng and nasi lemak. I cannot recall – in what is now many decades of trawling funky eats places all over Melbourne – any other eatery that so thoroughly, wonderfully expresses a particular school of transnational cooking, in this case Indian/Malaysian. Panjali has been open about three months and is popular – as I discover on a CTS reconnaissance trip for Sunday lunch. The service is warm and the prices are extremely cheap. It’s closed on Mondays, but other than that it keeps long opening hours. House-made curry puffs ($5 for two) are ungreasy and have a thick casing that is nevertheless good; the spud-based vegetable filling does the job. On my initial solo visit, I go for the eponymous banana leaf meal. When Nat Stockly and I return for a more in-depth exploration of the menu, he does the same. The basic banana leaf meal costs $9.90 and consists of a generous rice pile anointed with vegetable-studded dal, with various vegetable dishes arranged alongside, along with rasam, yoghurt, pickle and pappadams. For an extra $6, I top my meal up with a truly excellent and big fried chicken piece. For $8, Nat gets a serve of lamb curry. It’s quite good, but could’ve been a bit hotter. Nat opines that often the state of pappadams

I could eat them all day. Perhaps it could be said this kind of food is not for everyone – the vegetables (cabbage, beans, pumpkin, okra, broccoli) are cooked down to quite an extent. But the food and the place that serves it most certainly hit the spot with us, and will do likewise for dedicated CTS readers. From the noodle line-up, mamak mee goreng ($10.90) is simple, lovely and surprisingly dry – in a good way. No meat or seafood here, the dish getting its flavour kicks mostly from just cabbage and egg. The many tempting roti variations will have to wait for another visit. Instead we order chicken murtabak ($10.90). It’s tremendous in every way – hot and fresh; and delicate and hearty at the same. The stuffing is a great mix of onion, egg and shredded chicken. And I love the lightly pickled fresh onion served on the side for extra crunch. SPORT Williamstown rolls over Elsternwick Williamstown has secured its place in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association south-west group finals after a 106-run mauling of Elsternwick at the Williamstown Cricket Ground on Saturday. The Seagulls had no trouble defending their total of 239, rolling the Wicks for just 133 in 56.5 overs. Seagulls spinner Patrick O’Malley continued his fine form with the ball, taking 4-38 off 13.5 overs. It was a big week for O’Malley, who was influential in the Gulls T20 grand final triumph over Brighton. However, it was far from a one-man band for Williamstown with all its key bowlers having an impact one way or another. Matthew Twentyman was the other big wicket taker with 3-15, while Mitchell Ferrie (1-18), Jarrod Flood-Bauce (1-16), Fraser Hay (0-14) and Nathan Bratby (0-12) built pressure. Williamstown’s victory was built on the back of strong day one batting displays from James Cook (66), Twentyman (45) and O’Malley (40).

The fourth-placed Seagulls will host Moorabbin in a final round one-day game at the Williamstown Cricket Ground on Saturday. One side that will be nervous heading into the final round will be Yarraville. The Eagles were towelled by Ormond in an eight-wicket defeat on Saturday, leaving them
one spot outside the top six with a game to play. Ormond raced past Yarraville’s total of 159 in 51.5 overs. Yarraville will need to beat Elsternwick and hope that either fifth-placed Ormond or sixth-placed Hoppers Crossing slip up to reach the finals. A gutsy Altona had a one-wicket loss to Melton. The A’s only managed 122 with the bat, but Shannon Clarke’s stellar bowling of 6-46 gave them a sniff. In the Victorian Turf Cricket Association, Yarraville Club’s top flight future will be determined this Saturday. The Clubbers need to defend their total of 7-295 against Strathmore and hope that either Spotswood or Sunshine United lose to avoid relegation. Captain Andrew Cullen (100) and Konrad Kurta (94) were the standouts with the bat. Last ball seals the game By Lance Jenkinson Druids have taken out the Victorian Turf Cricket Association Twenty20 title with a thrilling last-ball victory over Strathmore in the final at Hanmer Reserve on Sunday. Needing one to win off the last two balls, the first chance for Druids batsman Steve Nicholson was a swing and miss, but he made contact a second time, dropping the ball at his feet and giving non-striker Sam Thurston a chance to scamper through for the match-winning run. It sparked wild celebrations from the Druids, ecstatic after chasing down Strathmore’s total of 7-122 to win the final by four wickets. “Everyone just ran on to the ground and Sam just kept running,” Druids captain Leigh Wilson said. “It was a pretty good feeling to win, especially against a quality side.” Druids had the upper hand at the mid-point of the game. Wilson saw Strathmore’s total of 122 as slightly below par and gettable. Nicholson was the standout with the ball for Druids with 3-25. The left arm spinner locked down the runs in the middle of the innings and claimed vital wickets. Thurston did the trick earlier on, taking 2-14 off four. Druids faced a required run rate of 6.1 runs per over – certainly achievable under normal circumstances, but the pressure of chasing in a final made it that little bit tougher. When the run rate needed crept up towards eight an over, there was a bit of panic in the Druids camp. “We were a bit slow out of the blocks and were only about 45 after 10 overs,” Wilson said. “It got pretty tense there.” Michael Hay (26) and Shane Windridge (19) built the platform for Druids, but it was man-of-the-match Nicholson (43 not out) and Sam Handley (23) who steered the side home. Nicholson and Handley combined for a match-winning 66-run fourth wicket partnership. The Druids players dedicated the win to the volunteers who have helped keep the club alive. There have been uncertain times at Druids, but their relocation to West Footscray in the summer of 2011-12 seems to have worked wonders. “The players did a good job to win, but those guys who put in the work week in week out to raise money for the club to keep it ticking along, this is for them,” Wilson said.
IN THE DOGHOUSE ■ The Footscray Edgewater Cricket Club is justifiably proud of the top-line players it has produced over the years – Travis Dean captaining the state side the latest milestone to add to the club history. A club that has produced the likes of Eastwood, Joslin, Miller, Gaunt, Hughes, Dodemaide, Hurst and Bright has a lot to be proud of. Last weekend club stalwarts Rainer Reber, Graeme Joslin and Geoff Collinson joined the Bulldogs Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame boasts some of the previous names mentioned plus Barry Watson, Michael O’Keefe and Vid Richardson. Congratulations to three great servants of the club. Well deserved. ■ Rhys Contessa is a relatively new face around the Whitten Oval as a part of the membership services team. But the Contessa name is not new, with brother Adam a former Bulldogs player – 45 games in the late ’90s – and current committee member of the past players and officials association. Rhys kept a family tradition going by being awarded Life Membership to the Royal Park-Brunswick Cricket Club last week, joining six other family members sharing that prestigious honour. ■ The final weekend of the home and away cricket season is coming up, and there is still a lot riding on the results, not only for finals aspirants but those in the relegation zone. In the subbies, Werribee is in, but Hoppers Crossing could fall out if it loses to ladder-leaders Caulfield, which might allow Yarraville to sneak into sixth. In the VTCA, Yarraville Club Cricket Club needs its bowlers to fire Strathmore out to avoid relegation but other results will factor in as well. The club is missing first XI finals for the first time in almost two decades and that stings. ■ Avalon Airport Oval hosts two big games this weekend as the real footy returns. Saturday, North Melbourne plays St Kilda in the opening round of the JLT Community series from 1.10pm. On Sunday, it’s round 5 of the AFLW with North Melbourne playing the Adelaide Crows. Neither game is a Werribee Football Club event but it is hosting a pre game function on the Sunday from 2.30pm featuring AFLW chief executive Nicole Livingstone, Collingwood star Sharni Layton and Wyndham mayor Mia Shaw. Dogs no match for Dandenong By Lance Jenkinson Footscray had a front row seat to a batting master class from Dandenong opener Brett Forsyth in the Victorian Premier Cricket at Shepley Oval on Saturday. It would appear that no score is safe if Forsyth is playing at his best. The Bulldogs started the day confidently after posting 9-350 declared on day one, but with every slash of the bat from Forsyth, their odds of winning dwindled. Footscray coach Stan Nell could only tip his cap to Forsyth after his match-winning innings of 168 not out off 279 balls, which led Dandenong to 5-354. “He batted the whole day to really set it up for Dandenong,” Nell said. “When you get a guy like that who has been in the form that he’s been in, it’s hard to stop them.” It was another steep learning curve for Footscray. The Bulldogs were content with their total at stumps on day one, but Nell thinks the side has squeezed a few more runs out of its innings.
He believes a tough defeat like that though will stand Bulldogs pups in good stead. “You don’t lose too many games when you make 350, but when you come across a team like Dandenong, who are the reigning premiers and won the white ball this year again and they’re sitting up there in the top part of the table, it’s a pretty awesome side you’re up against,” Nell said. “The young side, instead of making those 30s and 40s, a couple of guys might go on and make 100 and a couple of 50s, so it might be a score of 400 rather than 350. “We’ll learn from that.” Footscray captain Dylan Kight and seasoned campaigner Dean Russ were superb on day one. Kight posted a top-score of 98, while Russ continued his brilliant summer with 91. Following defeat in the previous round, Kight put it on the experienced players to step up and point the way for the youngsters, and they did just that. “They’ve been outstanding this season,” Nell said. “Russy is nearing 800 runs with one game to go and Kighty is on about 500 runs.
“They’re absolute professionals in terms of how they go about it and I can’t fault them. “The young guys playing with them will learn a lot from them.” The young Footscray batsmen again showed some promising signs. Matthew Underwood (41), Dylan Brasher (40), Jordan Kight (39) and Ashley Armstrong (28) have stamped themselves as players to watch for the future. Nell wants to see some rewards though and what better way than to get a win over Greenvale Kangaroos in the last round. “When sides win, it means the younger players have stood up and done the business when it counts on match day,” Nell said. “It means that we’re making progress. “I’m looking forward to the young blokes doing that.” Lucas Dredge was the shining light out of Footscray’s bowlers. Dredge took four of the Bulldogs five wickets to finish with 4-76 off 18.1. A top-10 wicket taker in the competition, Dredge has an impressive 28 wickets at an average of 19.46.

Distressing incident ends game early It was a premature and shocking end to the Newport Rams dead rubber final round clash with Port Melbourne Mariners in the Baseball Victoria summer league division 2 at J.L. Murphy Reserve on Saturday. The game had to be called off after four innings after the umpire collapsed due to dehydration. An ambulance was called and the umpire was admitted to hospital. “We had a paramedic on our side and the ambulance came pretty quickly,” Rams player-coach David Asp said. “It wasn’t as serious as it could’ve been, which is good. “The game didn’t mean much for both teams, so we decided to call it early.” It was a final dress rehearsal for Newport before the finals. The Rams have been in finals preparation mode for about two weeks now, approaching
each game with caution and using them to blood some of the keen youngsters. “We’ve kind of known we were going to play finals for a while,” Asp said. “To finally have it come around is good. “We’ve just used the past few games to get people right and rest a few bodies.” Even though it was restricted to a four-inning game, it was still a meaningful outing for some of the Rams. Asp got three valuable innings of pitching under his belt before the finals, while youngster James Walshe threw the fourth. “We were hoping to give some more of the younger ones some innings, but that’s unfortunately the only thing we missed out on,” Asp said. The big development out of the day was a home run to Justin Gill. It was Gill’s first homer of the season and it

was more evidence of his improving form in recent weeks. “It was hit to dead centre field and it was well hit,” Asp said. “He’s been hot and cold this season, but the last four or five weeks he’s been really good with the bat.” Newport will face Werribee Giants in an all-western suburbs best-of-three semi-final series starting on Thursday. Riley Barr is scheduled to start on the mound for the Rams in the series opener. Asp is expecting a fierce contest after the sides played three competitive games during the season. “They won two out of the three games during the season, but we’re a better team than we were when we played them,” he said. Newly promoted Altona Magic is yet to find the right potion for a breakthrough win in the National Premier League. The Magic was disappointed to walk away empty-handed from a 4-3 loss to Melbourne Knights at Knights Stadium on Friday night. Magic coach Goran Lozanovski is adamant his side deserved at least something after their performance. “We scored three and missed five sitters, so the game could’ve got messy for the Knights,” he said. “We probably kept them in the game because we missed those opportunities.” While Altona’s finishing left a little to be desired, the build-up play for most of the night was spot on. Where the Magic lacked was in defensive concentration. The Knights pounced on any lapses from the Magic’s defence. “If you don’t concentrate for 90-plus minutes, you can get punished quite easily,” Lozanovski said. “Unfortunately we did at the set pieces. “I think we’re better than that defensively.” Melbourne Knights were down to 10 men when they scored the winner through AJ Inia. Inia rose unmarked at the corner to power in the header with only seconds left on the referee’s watch. “To lose it in the last 30 seconds was shattering,” Lozanvski said. Michiel Hemmen showed why Altona Magic was keen to get him on board. The Dutchman worked his way into the game to become a key forward line and even found the back of the net for his first goal for the club. Lozanovski was also thrilled with the performances of Altona wingers Robert Stambolziev and Sami Nour. Stambolziev capped a best-on-ground showing with a goal. Dusan Bosnjak put his round one penalty miss behind him with the Magic’s opening goal. Troy Ruthven was a commanding presence in the middle of the park.
