Leaping into dance fame Two dancers from Spotswood are heading to Portugal to compete for world titles after each being crowned Dancer of the Year in the Showcase Australian Dance Championships. Lexi Robertson, aged eight, and Isabelle Bitsikas, 11, won their respective categories after competing against dancers from across Australia and New Zealand. Lisa Hammer, director of The Dance Company in Spotswood, said they both started with the studio aged about three. “We were training every day leading up to the competition,” she said. “Their prize was to fly to Italy to attend the World Dance Movement and they will compete in the Dance World Cup in Portugal in June. “They have a chance to win a prestigious title overseas, which is exciting.” More than 12,000 dancers from around the world, aged four to 25, try to qualify for the Dance World Cup final, which is held annually in a different country.

MPs beg for care rethink Services for some of the west’s most vulnerable residents may not be privatised after mounting pressure on councils from Labor heavyweights. State and federal MPs are urging Hobsons Bay and Maribyrnong councils not to outsource home care for the elderly and younger people with disabilities given the likelihood of an imminent federal Labor government. As reported by Star Weekly, both councils began a tender process to sub-contract domestic assistance, personal care and in-home respite due to proposed changes in federal funding. However, Hobsons Bay council cancelled Tuesday night’s ordinary meeting, at which a decision on the tender was expected to be made,
after receiving a joint letter from Labor MPs. The letter addressed to chief executive Aaron van Egmond, dated February 4, was jointly signed by Williamstown MP Melissa Horne, Footscray MP Katie Hall and Western Metropolitan Region MP Ingrid Stitt. It urges the council not to outsource the service given an “imminent federal election”, implying that funding arrangements could change if Labor wins government. “Our constituents are concerned that the contracting out of these services will lead to poorer care outcomes for vulnerable community members,” the letter states. The letter requests an explanation from the council on why it no longer wants to provide in-home aged care services “given the high
level uncertainty in the broader environment, namely the aged care royal commission and imminent federal election”. Australian Services Union organiser Luke Cherry said an identical letter was sent to Maribyrnong council. Mr Cherry said federal Opposition Leader and Maribyrnong MP Bill Shorten and Gellibrand MP Tim Watts also opposed moves to outsource the service. “The position is, an incoming federal Labor government has got in the federal platform that they will review the models, that they will investigate ways to keep the services in-council in Victoria, and basically maintain it by councils being providers of direct home care support,” Mr Cherry said.

“There is likely to be a change of federal government who may well maintain all of the funding and, also, we’re at the commencement of a royal commission into aged care. “While all of that’s going on, and the funding is guaranteed until mid 2020 and is expected to be extended regardless, why on earth would they privatise it now?” Mr van Egmond said no decision has yet been made by the councillors. Maribyrnong community services director Clem Gillings declined to comment. Last night’s scheduled meeting of Hobsons Bay council was deferred to next Tuesday, when both Hobsons Bay and Maribyrnong are expected to make a decision on the matter.

If these walls could talk Memories and memorabilia of Williamstown Town Hall are being sought to help celebrate the 100th anniversary of Williamstown this year. Hobsons Bay council has put out a call for recollections, photos and mementos of weddings, dances, debutante balls, citizenship ceremonies, graduations and other events held at the town hall since it opened in 1927. The items will be compiled for an exhibition titled: Memories of Williamstown: 100 years a city. The exhibition will be displayed at Williamstown Library as part of the Heritage Hobsons Bay festival from April 18 to May 19. Hobsons Bay mayor Jonathon Marsden said the centenary was a chance to reflect on the history of Williamstown, which was incorporated as a borough in 1856, became a town in 1886 and was proclaimed a city on May 17, 1919. “Originally Melbourne’s first seaport, Williamstown has developed from what was a working port town into a popular and fashionable maritime village,” he said. “Our majestic town hall is the very heart of the city and has played host to a wide range of activities, social events, balls, concerts, ceremonies, festivals and even weddings. “In fact, the town hall is one of the biggest seated venues in Melbourne’s west.” Councillor Peter Hemphill said the council was hoping to borrow items for the exhibition. “Mementos can include concert tickets, or a debutante dress, a program, a menu, election material, a badge, wedding invitation or cake topper,” he said. “We are open to all items that produce fond memories of the town hall, and of course the library staff will take great care of any borrowed items.” To share your story or memorabilia, visit Williamstown library, email heritage@ hobsonsbay.vic.gov.au or call 9932 1342.

“The people who owned the dogs didn’t do anything.” Hobsons Bay corporate services acting director Roger Verwey said dog owners were “entirely responsible” for the actions of their animals and should be in control of their dogs at all times. “When there are a range of different users within or near a dog off-lead area, common sense and caution needs to be applied by all,” he said. “Owners having verbal control over their dog is especially essential to ensure their animals remain within the designated off-lead area.”
More charges in murder case A relative of a man charged with murder allegedly drove the accused from the scene of a shooting and tried to provide him with an alibi. Police allege Jason Lee Ashman, 48, fatally shot Dwayne Wright, 26, near the front door of the latter’s home in Altona between 10pm and 11pm on December 23 last year. But according to charge sheets released by Melbourne Magistrates Court on Thursday, Rosanna Ashman told police Mr Ashman arrived at her Kensington home about 9.30 that night. Ms Ashman, 66, is charged with perjury and being an accessory after murder, in that police allege she drove Mr Ashman and the gun away from the scene of the shooting. Charge sheets for Ms Ashman allege she told a police officer she was “not aware of anything happening between Jason and the guy”. “Jason and I left and took my dog, Floyd, for a walk. We were gone about half an hour,” she allegedly told police the day after the shooting. “Jason didn’t go anywhere else after he got to my place last night at 9.30pm.” Mr Ashman is charged with murder. Magistrate Donna Bakos on Thursday granted police more time to prepare their evidence against the pair, as investigators await pathology and toxicology reports, and an analysis of telecommunications between the Ashmans and other people. A woman has been hospitalised with broken bones after an incident at Altona’s dog beach, prompting a warning that pet owners must control their animals. Yarraville man Anthony Barr said he and his wife, Helen, were in the water off Burns Reserve at mid-morning on Sunday, February 3. “Three big dogs were chasing each other and they crashed into my wife … they’ve broken three bones in her foot and dislocated her foot,” he said. “She’s going to be in hospital for 10 days. We
were 150 metres offshore and then another 150 metres from the road. “We called the ambulance. They [paramedics] couldn’t wheel the big trolley over the sand so they had a little chair trolley. “We were thinking of calling the SES to help us, but the paramedics recruited half a dozen big lads on the beach who had dogs there … they put a board underneath her and carried her out to the ambulance.” Mr Barr said it was unknown who the dogs belonged to. “Owners should care for their dogs and what their dogs are doing,” he said.

Novel idea for Griffiths Best-selling children’s author and Williamstown resident Andy Griffiths recently visited Newport library to mentor children, as young people are being invited to enter the Write by the Bay youth writing competition. Griffiths, whose books have sold more than 12 million copies worldwide, worked with 20 young people on their writing. The 17th annual youth writing prize is open to school-aged entrants who live, study or have joined a library in Hobsons Bay. Entrants may submit stories, poems and songs to win more than $2000 in cash and prizes.
The top two entries in each category will be published in a compilation of finalists’ work. Schools may submit a class entry for a chance to win $500 worth of books for their library. New track plan revealed By Benjamin Millar The consortium building a new track and platform to connect West Footscray station to the $11 billion Metro Tunnel has unveiled detailed plans for the project. From 2025, high-capacity trains will connect West Footscray to five new underground stations via twin nine-kilometre rail tunnels beneath the CBD. The Rail Infrastructure Alliance (RIA) – the consortium that will deliver the new works at West Footscray – last week released a draft Western Turnback Development Plan, outlining the planned rail and platform works. The work will include construction of a third platform at West Footscray with ramp, stair and lift access, modifications to the existing concourse, realignment of existing tracks and an additional track. Existing tracks will be realigned and track turnouts will be built to allow outbound trains to change direction and return to the city, boosting the number of services able to run. The works are expected to help 12,000 extra passengers use the new stand-alone Sunburyto-Cranbourne-Pakenham line. The state government announced the West Footscray works in 2016, just three years after the station was rebuilt. Although detailed Melbourne Metro requirements at West Footscray were not known at the time of the 2013 rebuild, some future-proofing was incorporated into the design. Feedback on the draft Western Turnback Development Plan – Stage 2 (Station Works) closes on February 22. A final plan will be submitted to the Minister for Planning for approval before works begin in mid-2019.

Yarraville rail safety fears Yarraville railway station’s level crossing has been revealed as one of the Melbourne network’s most dangerous, with almost 30 near misses and trespass incidents in the past seven months. There have been 14 near-miss incidents and 14 trespass incidents at Yarraville station since July, 2018, with incidents including both children and adults. Metro and Victoria Police have identified the station as one of the 10 worst sites for safety incidents involving school children, echoing a 2014 Vicroads report that found Yarraville had Victoria’s fourth highest rate of serious injuries, collisions and near misses. Yet the crossing has not been placed on the state government’s list of level crossing removals. Campaigns for the return of a pedestrian underpass, which was filled in in 1997, or creation of an overpass have also been rejected. Yarraville’s boom gates are down for up to 30 minutes each hour during peak periods, with up to 20 trains passing through hourly. Public Transport Minister Melissa Horne said Yarraville station was one of the focus stations of Operation Jet, a program educating children about safety and train awareness. Police officers, Protective Services Officers and Metro staff will visit schools, level crossings and stations in the next 11 weeks to discuss rail safety with students. Benjamin Millar

Exit safety demands ramped up By Goya Dmytryshchak Altona Meadows residents have renewed calls for action to improve safety at a notorious freeway exit after three crashes were reported within a week. VicRoads last year vowed to review the tight turn on the Newland Street off-ramp from the Princes Freeway after two cars slammed into a wall in the space of a fortnight. In recent incidents, two collisions were reported at the location within about an hour on Sunday, February 3.
Altona Meadows Community Association president Jodi Martin said she witnessed a another crash at the site on Tuesday last week. “When I came off the ramp, the cars obviously have been slowing down for the ‘Slow Down’ sign and two cars had collided at the start of the exit lane from the freeway,” she said. “One car had run into the back of another car. “It’s a very sharp corner that you really do underestimate … it’s just about a total U-turn.” VicRoads transport and planning director
David Teague said new line markings and “Reduce Speed” signs had been added. “A review has shown some promising signs with a slight overall reduction in vehicle speeds,” he said. “We’ll continue to monitor safety on the Newland Street exit and will consider making further safety improvements if necessary.” The recommended exit speed is 35km/h. Speed counts conducted over seven days in December before and after the new signs showed a slight reduction in the number of vehicles travelling at speeds of above 50km/h.

That’s a rap for laneway Shrugging off an early soak from passing showers, thousands of music fans turned out on Saturday to welcome St Jerome’s Laneway Festival to its new home at Footscray Park. Ruby Fields and G Flip weren’t fazed by their early time slots, warming up the growing crowds and earning plenty of new admirers. Yolngu rapper Baker Boy, freshly crowned as Young Australian of the Year, cranked up the energy levels. Radiant indie rockers Middle Kids more than held their own on the side stage with a bevy of bounce-along hits such as Edge of Town. Rising singer-songwriter Clairo rolled out her deceptively catchy pop hits including Pretty Girl. Those lucky enough to be wandering by the Girls Rock stage were treated to a laid-back impromptu solo set by Courtney Barnett. Scruffy Byron Bay garage surf outfit Skegss were clearly enjoying the attention, almost
drowned out by the audience sing-along to hits including New York California. Mitski changed the pace with her trademark idiosyncratic precision before fiercely independent Footscray locals Camp Cope delivered the day’s most pointedly political set. Bronx rapper A Boogie wit da Hoodie showed the melodic flow that has him topping the charts back in the US, followed by tightly-strung Brooklyn post-punk outfit Parquet Courts. The biggest roar of the day was reserved for the arrival onstage of Gang of Youths. Frontman David Le’aupepe belted out emotion-soaked epics that show why the act has grown to become one of the biggest bands in the country. Funding pledge for Viet museum By Benjamin Millar Australia’s first museum dedicated to Vietnamese culture is one step closer to being built in Footscray following a $4.45 million pledge from the Federal Labor Party. Opposition Leader Bill Shorten has promised to match the Victorian government’s $4.45 million towards construction of the nation’s first Vietnamese Cultural Centre and Museum. Mr Shorten made the pledge during a
Lunar New Year flag-raising ceremony held at Footscray Town Hall to welcome the Year of the Pig. He said the $20 million museum would become a home for the nearly 300,000-strong Vietnamese community to collect, preserve and exhibit their culture and history. “The museum has been a long-term goal for the Victorian chapter of the Vietnamese community in Australia and will contain interactive exhibits to share stories that will provide a unique insight into the ongoing
journey of the Vietnamese community in Australia,” he said. “These are stories of sacrifice to give their children a better shot at life, long hours and hard work to grow small businesses and educate the next generation.” Mr Shorten said Footscray was the ideal site for the project, as the bedrock of the Australians of Vietnamese background since settlement. The centre is likely to be built on a Donald Street site currently used as a public carpark. It is due to be open in 2025, to coincide
with the 50th anniversary of the settlement of Vietnamese refugees in Australia. Footscray resident Ken Betts criticised Mr Shorten for promising public money to the project and questioned Maribyrnong council’s decision to raise the yellow Co Vang flag of the former South Vietnam on its flag pole. However Viv Nguyen, president of the Victorian chapter of Vietnamese Community in Australia, argued the flag is an important means of celebrating the contribution of the Vietnamese diaspora in Australia.

is guaranteed to surprise and delight the senses,” he said. Other events will include an Ethiopian vegan feast in Footscray and a food trail through Sunshine exploring Asian, African and Indian dishes. A twilight market dinner will be held in St Albans. Peter Norman is the ‘forgotten man’ in one of the most powerful and influential photos of all time. Peter Norman won a silver medal at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics. In an act of solidarity, he stood on the podium wearing an Olympic Project for Human Rights badge while the two US Medallists Tommie Smith and John Carlos gave the black power salute to protest against racial inequality. Peter Norman’s time of 20.06 seconds for the 200 metre sprint still stands as an Australian record.

FB: How would you rate yourself as a cook? MW: I love cooking. It’s one of my favourite things to do in the world, and I just find it really calming. It’s like meditation. So when I’ve got a busy or really hectic schedule, what I love to do is just cook, and I’ll cook for lots of people or I’ll cook for myself. I cooked for Christmas. I love doing it. When you’re working, your mind’s in a million places and for me, when I’m cooking, I have to concentrate on cooking. You have a glass of wine and talk. I think it’s such a valuable thing to do for me, personally. FB: What is your signature dish? MW: I think it would be a slow, slow and low cooked lamb. I cook it for about seven hours. A big beautiful lamb leg. Lots of garlic. Some anchovies. Cover the whole thing up. I slow, slow cook it for hours on end. I think any meal you can share and pull apart together is just perfect. FB: What is your favourite kind of food? MW: I feel like I was born in the wrong country. I feel like Italy is where I was supposed to be. I can’t speak Italian, but I can cook Italian. Pasta is just heaven – absolute heaven – to me. Life without pasta is life not worth living. I get great joy out of making pasta (from scratch). FB: Are you a coffee drinker? MW: I am a coffee drinker, although I’ve limited it to one a day these days because, you know, I’m getting older and I don’t sleep like I used to. I’m happy to have instant. I’m all for bringing back instant coffee. I feel like we’ve moved too far the other way with our coffees. You know, there’s nothing wrong with a Nescafe Blend 43. FB: Which five people would you most like to invite to dinner? MW: David Bowie, Prince, Elvis Presley, Elton John and Madonna.

FB: Do you have a kitchen tip for us? MW: Tidy up as you go. There’s nothing worse than having just a mound of mess when you’re done. That takes the joy out of it for me.
INTERCHANGEABLE SLICE On the latest Food Bytes podcast, we discussed my favourite go-to slice recipe. It’s an interchangeable slice. By omitting just one ingredient, it can be something entirely different. Usually I’ll make the traditional chocolate version for my son, while hubby prefers the tangy lemon version. For lemon slice, simply leave out the two tablespoons of cocoa and ice with lemon frosting instead of chocolate. If you’re ever called on to ‘take a plate’ to party or function, here’s what you do … in one bowl, mix together 1 cup sifted self raising flour, 1 teaspoon baking powder, 2 tablespoons cocoa (as I said, omit if you’re making lemon slice), 1 cup caster sugar, 1 cup desiccated coconut, 150g melted butter, 1 teaspoon vanilla essence and 1 lightly beaten egg. Bake at 160 degrees celsius in a 20 x 30cm lined baking tray for 25 to 30 minutes. When cool, ice with either chocolate or lemon icing. Pictured are two versions I prepared earlier!

SPORT Seabrook takes Imperials by surprise Williamstown Imperials’ spot in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association division 3 will come under fire this weekend. The fourth-placed Imperials are staring down the barrel against lowly Seabrook, despite going into the game at Bruce Comben Reserve as hot favourites. A stop-start batting performance yielded just 156 off 74.3 overs on a disappointing day one for Williamstown Imperials. Mason Lindner was the bright spot for the Imperials with a patient 63 off 147 balls. Seabrook had a bit of swagger with the bat, smashing 0-22 off two overs before stumps. The Saints require just 135 for victory. A loss could be disastrous for Williamstown Imperials with East Keilor and West Newport hot on their heels. West Newport had a dog of a day though, losing on first innings to bottom side Footscray United, but will be hoping for an outright on day two.

United’s rare day of joy came courtesy of a seven-wicket haul from Yaditha Ushan, who finished with 7-29 off 17 overs. East Keilor has a big run chase against premiership contender Sunshine. In senior division, Yarraville Club faces a
strenuous task with the ball against Sunshine United at Selwyn Park. The Clubbers could only produce 154 off 74.2 overs, leaving not much to defend for their bowlers. Adam Contessa (36), Andrew Cullen (33) and Konrad Kurta (32) showed potential for the Clubbers, but could not go on. In division 1 west, Druids hold all the aces in their clash with Greenvale Kangaroos at Shorten Reserve. The Druids smashed 5-297 off its 80 overs with Shane Windridge (139) and Steven Nicholson (78) leading the way. Altona North, looking to preserve its spot in the top four, is in a strong position at 2-36 in reply to Tullamarine’s total of 117. In division 2, two games are finely poised. Eagles snatch vital win By Lance Jenkinson A Matthew Grose-inspired Yarraville has conquered Melton on its own soil to move into the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association south-west group top six with two rounds to play. The Eagles were victorious by 34 runs at a MacPherson Park ground that has historically been a tough hunting ground for opposition clubs. Eagles captain Nathan Allen was thrilled. “It’s always tough out there, so we’re very happy to walk away with six points,” he said. Yarraville was determined from the first ball to last. The Eagles were calm and composed with the bat on day one, batting out their 80 overs to compile 8-213. “You’ve just got to be patient when you’re at Melton,” Allen said. “If the bowler is bowling well, it’s very hard to score, so you’ve got to back yourself to bat 80 overs and if you can get past 200, you’re always in the game. We were able to do that.” Aidan Salvado was the key to Yarraville’s competitive score. The teenager carved out 91 from the top of the order in another impressive effort. “Considering he’s a 16-year-old kid, he’s batting like he’s been doing it for 20 years,” Allen said. “For him to go to probably the hardest ground in the competition to score runs – and nearly get 100 against a good bowling attack and a really slow outfield – just speaks volumes.” Lucas Nikoloski, the Eagles’ other up-and-comer, made a crucial 35 in the middle order. Matthew Harrison scored 27 and man of the match Matthew Grose added 18 not out. Yarraville’s efforts with the ball on day two – one man short after speedster Nick Parish strained a hamstring during the week – were inspiring. The Eagles bowled Melton out for 179 in 69.4 overs. Grose was the star, taking an incredible 7-70 off 28.4 overs. The quick bowled 25 overs on the trot at one stage, helping Yarraville fill the void left by the injured Parish. “To be honest, I didn’t want to take him off with the way he was bowling,” Allen said. “He was getting plenty of swing and doing all the right things. I kept chatting with him every few overs to see how he was going and if he was happy, so we just kept him going.” Spinner Allen snared 2-40 off 17 overs, including the key scalp of Melton top-scorer Ben MacRae for 64, to go with three catches.
IN THE DOGHOUSE ■ The 30th annual Jalna Big Bay Swim is on Sunday, February 24. The Rotary Club of Point Gellibrand, the event organisers, have an alternative course to avoid a repeat of the cancellation last year due to wild seas. The 3.2 kilometre race from Port Melbourne to Williamstown attracts a big and highly credentialed field. Sam Shepherd, the recent Lorne Pier to Pub winner, will be there, as will Robbe Dikissen, the Altona North teen he beat at Lorne. Lifesavers from Frankston, Mentone, Port Melbourne, Sandridge, Altona and Williamstown will be patrolling this year’s swim as well as providing paddle boarders for maximum water safety. The race finishes in Williamstown with a community festival at Commonwealth Reserve. Entries: bigbayswim.com.au ■ On that subject, water safety has never been more important as we approach the tail end of another tragic summer on Victorian beaches. One death is too many. People ignoring flags and directions from lifesavers is just reckless and should be punished accordingly. Schools are about to hold their annual swimming carnivals and I am sure the number of students who can’t swim is alarming. Not everyone can be Shane Gould, Ian Thorpe or Trevor Hendy but the old ‘can swim enough to save myself’ should be a bare minimum. I am all in favour of the school swimming certificate being compulsory. ■ The local soccer derby between Werribee City and Hoppers Crossing Soccer Club last weekend united the rivals in a common goal – to highlight the plight of jailed soccer star Hakeem Al-Araibi. A great gesture by both clubs and their supporters. Soccer in Wyndham is in a very interesting place with the Western Melbourne A League team only months away from playing. I am wondering what role all local clubs will play with the new franchise, especially in the first few years before it calls Tarneit home. I think they can all have a very healthy co existence. ■ The Melbourne Aces might be on the move from Melbourne Ballpark in Altona and that is no big surprise. The club is looking to relocate a number of its home games to Albert Park which is a more central and accessible location. There is nothing wrong with the Altona stadium unless you actually want to get there. Baseball has tried the Whitten Oval and the Showgrounds with mixed results but I hope this one works.

Bulldogs rue a season of despair
By Lance Jenkinson Newport Rams have closed out their three-game series against plucky bottom-ofthe-ladder outfit Springvale Lions with an emphatic shut-out victory. After pipping the Lions by a single run in each of the first two Baseball Victoria summer league division 2 games, the Rams claimed the series sweep with a resounding 9-0 victory on the road at KH Wearne Reserve in Dingley Village on Sunday. Rams playing coach David Asp was relieved to have a more comfortable result after a tough series. “A nine-zip win is always a good feeling,” he said. Newport used the penultimate series of the regular season to rest some big-name players and promote youth. With a finals spot already wrapped up, the series provided an opportunity for the Rams of the future to get a taste of senior baseball while allowing some of the veterans a chance to freshen up. “It wasn’t the usual outfit that we’d put out there,” Asp said. “It’s good to get a few of the younger kids in. It got them a few at-bats and a few innings.” That is not to say the veterans did not have a big say in the nine-run thrashing. Asp filed six innings for no runs, while David Land got four hits. “It’s not just the young blokes doing stuff,” Asp said with a chuckle. “Him and I have played together since under 12s, so that’s over 30 years and that’s one of the good things about baseball. The kids keep us honest, though.” The future was on show, with Nathan Smith, an under-16 Victorian representative, pitching two innings and James Walshe closing. Neither conceded a run. Calling the game from behind the plate was young catcher Mason Wray, an under-18 Victorian representative, while Connor Schibeci had two hits on debut. Asp is excited by the young talent coming through. “There’s a few old blokes just hanging on and a couple of young blokes pushing through,” he said. “It’s a good mix of old and young, which is great.” Currently third, Newport cannot finish the regular season any lower. The Rams will head into the final three-game series, against Port Melbourne Mariners, with a chance of snatching second. “We’ll use the last series to work out a few kinks, give some of the older guys a rest and then it’s full steam into finals,” Asp said. Meanwhile, Williamstown Wolves had a comprehensive 14-1 win over Mulgrave Rebels on Sunday. The Wolves swept the three-game series.

Footscray is experiencing some growing pains in Victorian Premier Cricket. The Bulldogs are a younger side compared to the four seasons post their premiership glory of 2013-14. Where the Bulldogs would find a way to win from any position in the past four years, it is not the case this summer. The so-close-yet-so-far tale has been trotted out too many times for captain Dylan Kight’s liking. Kight knows some of his squad is learning on the job, but that is no consolation. So, another tight loss at the weekend, this one by 16 runs to Frankston Peninsula at A.H. Butler Oval, was met with disappointment. “It’s very frustrating,” Kight said. “It’s been the same story about three or four times that we’ve walked away [with a loss] and it could’ve quite easily gone the other way.” It was a two-man show for Frankston Peninsula with the bat on Saturday. The home side posted 9-259 declared off 95 overs on the back of sensational batting from Tom Wood (102 not out) and Chris Dew (72). “They were willing to do what we weren’t with the bat today and just stick through the hard periods and they came through the other side of it,” Kight said. Footscray’s response was up and down like a roller coaster. Each time the Bulldogs looked to be on the right track, they would lose a wicket. The Dogs got plenty of starts from their top order – openers Ash Armstrong (30) and Matt Underwood (25) featured in a 50-run opening stand, Travis Dean (23), Kight (17) and Russ (14) started promisingly – but none could go on. Tallan Wright did his utmost to keep Footscray in the game with 64 off 100 balls, while Jack Sheppard (25) and Lucas Dredge (14 not out) provided assistance. Wright’s knock provided hope when all looked lost. Footscray remains second-last on the ladder, nine points clear of bottom side Kingston Hawthorn. While finals are well and truly off the radar, the Bulldogs are treating their match against Dandenong as their own personal grand final. “They currently hold every title in the Premier Cricket first XI, so it’s a good challenge,” Kight said. The Western Bulldogs have enjoyed a perfect home opener in the AFLW season. The night started with the unfurling of the Bulldogs’ 2018 premiership flag and ended with an 18-point win over expansion side Geelong at Whitten Oval on Saturday. Bulldogs coach Paul Groves said the Cats were a tough nut to crack, but commended his players for finding a way to win without reaching optimum performance levels. “Really pleased – you walk away with the four points,” he said. “They were really good at their structures and their set-ups and we couldn’t get our game sort of flowing. “We found a way – we defended pretty strong when they had the momentum.” Trailing by two points at quarter-time, the Western Bulldogs caught fire in the second quarter, banging on three goals to nil with the breeze at their backs.
A sensational snap from Bonnie Toogood sparked the Bulldogs’ run, with Deanna Berry following up with a running goal and Ellie Blackburn slotting a set shot from long range. Monique Conti was everywhere in the first half, throwing her body around fearlessly, while Lauren Spark continued her brilliant start to the season with stellar defensive work. It was effort at the coal face by Ellie Blackburn and Kirsty Lamb that steered the Bulldogs across the four quarters. Blackburn has to play a slightly different role in the Bulldog midfield, though is no less effective than in the premiership year. “Ellie, if anything, has had to go inside a little bit more and do a bit more of the grunt work,” Groves said. Lamb has gone up another level this season. That is saying something when you consider the onballer was top three in the team’s best-and-fairest last season.
“Kirsty probably doesn’t get the recognition she deserves,” Groves said. “I was a bit surprised she wasn’t in All Australian contention last year. She’s backed that up again.” Kim Rennie and Celine Moody battled well in the ruck for the Bulldogs, while Aisling McCarthy, an Irishwoman with a Gaelic football background, capped an impressive debut with a goal. Aisling Utri was among the better players, drawing praise from her coach. Utri had 14 disposals, six marks and four tackles after kicking the game’s opening goal. “I thought it was her best game of footy, probably,” Groves said. The Bulldogs will need to go up a notch when they face top-of-the-ladder North Melbourne in Tasmania on Friday night. Lance Jenkinson
