Megan Bridger-Darling has been sworn in as Maribyrnong’s newest councillor following a countback of votes from the 2016 election. The countback was triggered by the election of Catherine Cumming to the Victorian upper house in November, requiring her to step down from her role as a councillor after 21 years. Ms Bridger-Darling was sworn in at Footscray Town Hall on Monday after the Victorian Electoral Commission calculated that she had received the highest preference flow from successful Stony Creek ward candidates Catherine Cumming and Cuc Lam. Ms Bridger-Darling, who has a marketing and event management background, came into prominence when she helped spearhead the campaign for the removal of paid parking in Yarraville in 2015. She will sit as an independent councillor despite recently joining the Labor Party. “It’s very exciting – I’m really looking forward to making a difference in Maribyrnong,” she said. “I stood because I wanted to represent the community, which I felt had been missing, particularly at the last election in 2016 – there was a real vacancy of community inter-action. People don’t feel like they get heard. “The most blatant example of that would be the parking meter fiasco in Yarraville. I wanted to be that ear and voice for the people of my community.” Ms Bridger-Darling said issues currently facing Stony Creek ward were safety, isolation and the fall-out from the Tottenham fire. “The management of Cruickshank

Feet first for grape fun A grape squashing competition at next month’s Yarraville festival will be a barrel of fun, organisers promise. St Nicholas Greek school will host the event, inviting people to shed their shoes and make “mousto”, or grape juice, the old-fashioned way – squashing grapes with their bare feet. The school’s principal, Father Alexandros, said the organisers were looking for participants who didn’t mind getting a little bit sticky. “Who will be crowned Yarraville’s best grape squasher? The Altona Beach vehicle closure trial, with the help of some great summer weather, has brought the crowds down to the Esplanade and Pier Street! The Men’s Shed’s colourful beach boxes are being well utilised and children and adults alike are enjoying the pop-up table tennis table, oversized jenga and giant chess. The trial aims to link the beachfront with nearby reserves, cafes, shops and the Altona Life Saving Club, while improving pedestrian safety. Works to the existing sportsfield at Bryan Martyn Oval in Newport are progressing well. The new surface has been shaped, a new cricket wicket bench has been constructed, and new drainage and irrigation installed. About 6,500 tonnes of quarried sand, which equates to about 216 truckloads, has been spread across the oval surface. The sand is being levelled across the oval ready for 16,000 square metres of instant turf to be installed. Following grassing, a new boundary fence and players shelters will be installed. Works are expected to be complete early February. The oval will remain closed until April to allow the new grass to successfully establish.

Skeleton Creek Trail upgrade The remaining upgrades of the Skeleton Creek Trail are coming soon, with the final sections complete by August 2019. Bike maintenance stations, additional tree planting, bench seats and dog waste dispensers will be included in the works over the coming months. Ferry trial for peak-hour commute By Goya Dmytryshchak A commuter ferry trial between Williamstown and Port Melbourne will start next month. As an alternative to battling peak-hour traffic, St Kilda Ferry will offer a service from February 11 to 27. The service will operate Monday to Wednesday, with the first ferry departing Gem Pier at Williamstown at 7am and the last at 5pm.

Milestone for a Guiding spirit Seabrook’s Ellice Hatfull celebrated her 100th birthday on Saturday, becoming Australia’s oldest known Girl Guide. Mrs Hatfull joined the Guides when she ws about 13 years old while growing up in Bethnal Green in London’s East End. The year she turned 21, World War II started. Mrs Hatfull led her own Guide patrol and tended to those in the bomb shelters. She was at the coalface of the Bethnall Green tube tragedy when 173 people died trying to escape what they thought was an air raid. “If we’d got our first-aid badges, we’d go to the air-raid shelters and comfort people, look after the people, make sure everything was OK,” Mrs Hatfull said. “Another job we had was, they used to collect old saucepans and tin foil and things like that, and we used to go round with a Costa barrow and collect all these bits and take it to the headquarters. They were all melted down for metal.” Mrs Hatfull said that during the bombings, the windows of her home would be often blown in or a door would fly off its hinges. “A month before the end of the war, a doodlebug fell right nearby and we got the blast of it all,” she said. “Right at the end of the war, the lot went. The amazing thing was that in the kitchen on the dresser we had an egg in an egg cup and that was still standing.” Mrs Hatfull and husband Stanley migrated to Australia in 1957. Their three daughters joined the Altona Guides in the 1960s and Mrs Hatfull became their unit leader for more than a decade. Mrs Hatfull celebrated her birthday with her close-knit family, including four grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. Girl Guides Victoria chief executive Amanda Kelly congratulated Mrs Hatfull. “Ellice’s Guiding journey shows the ways that Guides can make a difference,” Ms Kelly said. “Once a Girl Guide, always a Girl Guide.”

Brawl erupts at Newport pub Glasses and chairs were thrown in a brawl at a Newport pub on Saturday afternoon that left one man hospitalised and two in police custody. The fight broke out in the smokers area of the Seagulls Nest Club, near the intersection of Mason Street and Melbourne Road, before spilling on to the footpath. One patron, Paul, who did not wish his last name to be used, said a man was knocked unconscious on the footpath by another man who had followed him outside from the smokers area. “Then I was standing at the bar and two different men came inside,” he said. “Next thing you know they’ve started a brawl defending their [unconscious] mate outside”. Paul and other patrons in the pub tried to escort the fighting men out of the pub as glasses and chairs were thrown. “One bloke left relatively peacefully,” he said. “The other one decided to destroy the joint on his way out the door.” Another witness saw one of the men, who was eventually arrested, trying to flee the scene on foot. “He was wearing a Richmond jumper and had blood on his head … he was heading towards the Newport train station,” said passer-by Victoria Paschalidis, who came to the scene after “hearing men screaming.” Emergency services arrived soon after 3pm. A Victoria Police spokesperson confirmed a 44-year-old man had been taken to hospital on Saturday afternoon for observation and scans. Two other men, a 48-year-old from Braybrook and another man in his 40s, are in custody in relation to assault charges.

From wreck to top rod Altona’s David King will exhibit his rare Ford T-bucket drag car during the Australia Day weekend. The car is thought to be one of the survivors – if not the only six-cylinder survivor – that was raced during the 1970s and ’80s. Mr King and his mate, Doug Anderson, spent about two years rebuilding the 1927 hot rod. The car was a wreck when Mr King acquired it about eight years ago. “It might be one of the only ones left of its type in Australia,” he said. “It is possibly the only six-cylinder car of this kind that has

survived. It can reach speeds of 140 miles-plus an hour [225/kmh] and it has a parachute to augment the breaking system.” Mr King, who is a member of Australian Nostalgia Racers and the Altona North chapter of Cruzin Knights Car Club, hopes to test the car’s speed at a race meet in March. ‘Bit of good’ from tragedy By Goya Dmytryshchak The families of two childhood mates who died when their car veered off a freeway at Altona North before Christmas are raising money for a road trauma charity in a bid to make some good of the tragedy. Jason Gilham and Brad Dobney, both 27, had just been to dinner with friends in Caroline Springs and were driving on the Western Ring Road near the Geelong-bound Princes Freeway off-ramp when their vehicle became airborne and sank in a wetland on December 15. The pair couldn’t get out of the submerged car and police say they died holding each other. Their families have organised what they hope will be the first of many ‘Gillo/Nobbers Cup’ charity cricket matches at Williamstown Cricket Ground this month to raise money for Road Trauma Support Services Victoria. The two men had lived in Williamstown for most of their lives. Mr Gilham had just bought a house with his girlfriend in Hoppers Crossing, while Mr Dobney had recently moved to Sunshine. Mr Gilham played for Williamstown Cricket Club while Mr Dobney played for St John’s Cricket Club at Williamstown North and had been a coach with the Wyndham All Abilities Football and Cricket Club. Mr Gilham’s brother Brad said the match was aimed at raising awareness and to “do a little bit of good out of an unfortunate situation”. “We’re trying to get as many people as we can there to try and spread the message and obviously the more people that are there, the more money we can raise as well,” he said. Mr Gilham’s mother Leasa Gibson said the charity match to help others was in keeping with Jason’s spirit.

“He was just an amazing young man, always out to help everybody else, always helping other people, always put other people before himself.” Money is also being raised through selling Drive With Jason wristbands, with many local businesses supporting the cause. Williamstown Cricket Ground on Sunday, January 27 at 2pm, with a barbecue and festivities from 1pm. Admission is by gold coin donation. Wristbands will be on sale for $5. Dentention site mixed use call The Maribyrnong Immigration Detention Centre site could be sold off for development following the closure of the troubled centre. It was closed at the start of this month – and remaining detainees were moved to other centres – six months after it was originally scheduled to be shut down. The Department of Home Affairs has confirmed it will no longer be using the site, but is yet to set a timeline for the sale of the 1.2-hectare property. The site is adjacent to Victoria University’s decommissioned 11-hectare student village. Maribyrnong council has slated the sites as suitable for a mix of housing and open space. Maribyrnong MP and federal Opposition Leader Bill Shorten said Labor had no intention of reopening the centre should Labor form government. “Melbourne’s west is booming and we need to make sure that when sites such as this and the Maribyrnong Defence land are being looked at for repurpose, that we keep all good options on the table,” he said. Professor Richard Constantine, VU vice-president of engagement and resources, said the university remained keen to dispose of its former student village site. He said the sale process stalled when the Victorian government shortlisted the site as a potential location for a rebuilt Footscray Hospital. Benjamin Millar

Laverton and Altona Community Bank will hold its sandcastle competitions on Saturday at Altona beach, while Western Suburbs Triathlon Club will hold its events on Monday. As reported by Star Weekly, the festival, run by the Altona Village Traders Association, was cancelled for logistical reasons. Association president Kim Walsh said the festival had grown too big for he and his wife Sharon to host and emphasised “it has nothing to do with political correctness”. In 2017, Williamstown’s Aretha Brown made international headlines when she addressed an Invasion Day rally in Melbourne calling for the Australia Day date to be changed. Hobsons Bay and Maribyrnong councils will hold citizenship ceremonies and present their annual civic awards on Australia Day. “The federal government really should lead a conversation about any change of date for Australia Day,” Hobsons Bay mayor Jonathon Marsden said. Maribyrnong mayor Martin Zakharov said personally he was in favour of changing the date, but understood there were people in the community who supported the day as it stood. “Personally I don’t support the 26th as an appropriate day, for all the historical reasons,” he said. Cr Zakharov also accused Prime Minister Scott Morrison of trying to gain political mileage from the debate by threatening local councils that chose not to hold citizenship ceremonies on Australia Day.

Time to frock up and rock up The competition will be fierce when contestants from around the country and overseas converge at Williamstown next month for the Miss Gay & Miss Transsexual Australia International beauty pageant. Event founder and Seddon resident Gayzha Davao held the first pageant 10 years ago at a St Kilda nightclub, attracting an audience of about 300. About 1000 people are expected at this year’s contest. “Miss Gay & Miss Transsexual Australia International is a celebration of drag queens and transgender women,” Ms Davao said. “We have had a wonderful 10 years of working to increase the visibility of, provide a voice for, and, promote inclusion, diversity and equality for the LGBTQIA+ community.” Themed ‘Colours of Diversity’, the event is sponsored by Hobsons Bay council as part of Midsumma Westside. Brooklyn resident airs her grievances A woman living near the Brooklyn industrial precinct has chronicled a week in the life of residents suffering dust and odour pollution on a sometimes daily basis. Carmen Largaiolli, a local government worker and member of the Brooklyn Community Representative Group, said efforts to improve air quality appeared to have regressed. “We’ve been fighting a long time and we’ve just got to a point where we’re at our wits end as residents,” she said. “Even though they’ve sealed Bunting and Jones roads, there’s still a lot of high readings [of poor air quality].” A 2011 Environment Protection Authority study found that unsealed roads, particularly Bunting and Jones roads, had caused between 50 per cent and 83 per cent of dust. Ms Largaiolli recently wrote to the EPA to describe a typical day for residents in Brooklyn. “Most days are really odorous – pungent landfill and abattoir smells sometimes combined with the smell of rendering works,” she wrote. “Other times it smells like dry cleaning fluid.” Sometimes when she opens a window the smell of “animal carcass cooking” seeps in. “We’ve had an ongoing issue with Australian Tallow Producers,” Ms Largaiolli said of the company fined $200,000 in 2015 for air pollution offences. “They keep getting second chances and breathing space to make corrections, but in my mind they should be out.” She said residents were worried they would be further exposed to fine particle pollution from the West Gate Tunnel project, a fear echoed by the Don’t Destroy Millers Road lobby group.

EPA on the hunt for polluters By Goya Dmytryshchak In less than an hour in Bunting Road on the Brooklyn industrial estate, two business sites have been detected causing dust pollution. During an inspection with the Environment Protection Authority last week, Star Weekly watched as officers were dispatched to one of the premises. It comes as the owners of a Brooklyn industrial site are fined more than $8000 for dust pollution after a nearby monitoring station detected falling air quality. EPA metro region manager Daniel Hunt said the fine was for failing to comply with an order to stop mud and dust going outside their boundary. Residents live just 400 metres from the 10-hectare industrial precinct, which has about 60 businesses. “We’ve issued 52 notices in Brooklyn in 2018 and we did 168 inspections last year,” Mr Hunt said. “Some businesses had multiple notices, for example, Western Land Reclamation as part of Sunshine Groupe. “We’ve suspended their licence; they’re no longer allowed to operate. But they also have notices for managing the landfill and reducing the amount of waste they’ve put on there in an effort to try and rehabilitate it, that is, get it covered in grass, make it look nice and pretty and reduce the dust generation from the site.” Brooklyn residents say they are continuing to suffer dust and odour pollution, particularly on hot and windy days. The EPA sends alerts to local schools and businesses when they know there is going to be a problem. “We do forecasting so we know when there’s going to be a bad day in Brooklyn,” Mr Hunt said.

“If you get a hot day and there’s a strong northerly wind, you can guarantee there’s going to be some dust in the area. “What I’d like to say to the residents is, continue to report. As soon as you notice an issue, whether it’s dust, odour or pollution in the creek or anything else of an environmental

Beach crew is a peace of work By Goya Dmytryshchak “Hey, cuz!” A beachgoer gives a friendly greeting as she passes officers from the Hobsons Bay summer policing crew. Soon after, a teenage boy stops so his dog, Zeus, can receive a friendly pat on the back from police. It’s typical of the reception they receive. Senior Sergeant Tim Jacobs said the crew, which operates at Altona and Williamstown beaches from mid-November to mid-March, had been successful in making the community feel safe. “We’re effectively identifying offences and preventing issues down here that we would not normally have seen had we not been here,” he said. About two months into the patrol period, he said police had detected about 200 offences, including more than 150 traffic infringements. “Enforcing the alcohol prohibition around the beach areas that Hobsons Bay council have implemented is probably one of our key focuses in deterring public order issues,” Senior Sergeant Jacobs said. One case, due to reach court in March, involves a 23-year-old man who allegedly assaulted an officer with a beer bottle in early January. He is accused of assaulting a further three police members during arrest and has been charged with eight offences. Police have been breathalysing drivers at different times of the day in streets around the beaches. “You’d be surprised when we do catch people – quite often it’s not when the majority of us would think that type of offending would occur,” Senior Sergeant Jacobs said. “Often it’s early morning because people have consumed alcohol overnight and think that

they’re right to drive, when in fact the alcohol hasn’t worked its way out of their system. “Also, commonly on your hot days, generally later on in the day when people have been drinking … they haven’t been vigilant enough to keep track of the quantities they’ve been drinking and quite often people will get caught then.” Police say the trial closure of part of the Esplanade at Pier Street has been beneficial in curbing hoon-related behaviour and other crimes.

The 100-metre stretch of road between Altona Life Saving Club and Weaver Reserve will be closed until March. While St Kilda beach has been hit with crime this summer, Altona and Williamstown have been largely immune. “It’s probably because we’ve been quick to jump on any issues and we’ve taken that pro-active stance in relation to having the summer policing here for the last few years,” Senior Sergeant Jacobs said. “We’ve always been on the front foot in the north-western suburbs and especially around here in Hobsons Bay. “And also with the support of the council, with their tight prohibition laws in relation to the consumption of alcohol; I think they’re some of the tightest in the state. “It’s certainly given us enough power to intervene and hold people to account … I think it creates a more friendly environment and also people know where they stand.”

On a blazing hot Melbourne day, is there any better place to be than luxuriating in the AC-cooled confines of Phi Phi? Nope. Itâ€™s been a while since weâ€™ve been here for a feed. The place has had a bit of a makeover and thereâ€™s some new faces around. But all else appears much the same â€“ including the superb food. Weâ€™re in the house to enjoy it with Brimbank councillors Duyen Anh Pham and Virginia Tachos. We play it safe when ordering â€“ nothing in the way of boundary testing for us during this lunch. But what we do order is AMAZING. Virginia originally wanted Vietnamese coleslaw, but is delighted nevertheless with the rare beef salad with lemon juice ($25). More in a Thai style than Vietnamese, itâ€™s just as tangy as expected and turbocharged with all sorts of greenery. The meat is rare, as promised, and excellent. Good thing we ordered the small version of the combination fried rice ($10), as itâ€™s very generous. Itâ€™s also momentously fluffy and studded with many plump and good-sized prawns. This lives on another planet from fried rice of meh bain marie infamy. Silky tofu done in salt and pepper style ($14) is Bennieâ€™s choice â€“ and it doesnâ€™t disappoint. The tofu chunks are profoundly plump and delicious.

SPORT A’s eye an upset victory By Lance Jenkinson It has been a tough summer to date for Altona, but it has a chance to do something special in Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association south-west first XI this Saturday. With a strong batting performance, the A’s can produce arguably the upset of the season against ladder leader Caulfield at Grant Reserve. The A’s require 189 for victory – a target that makes them favourites heading into day two. A’s captain Adam Yates appreciates the significance of the opportunity. “To get a scalp like Caulfield would be massive for us,” he said. “We’ve got two debutants and for them to be in a winning side in the first game that they’ve played would be fantastic. “Obviously, we’ve still got a fair bit of cricket to be played … but we’ll be pumped to get into it, give it everything we’ve got and hopefully chase them down.” Altona’s bowlers were not daunted by the star-studded Caulfield batting line-up. At no point did the A’s allow the visitors to settle as they took consistent wickets from start to finish. “We were really impressive and happy to keep them to 188,” Yates said. “To do that in 75 overs was a credit to the bowlers.” Jeremy Swan steamed in with purpose for Altona. The speedster had the Caulfield batsmen on the back foot with his fiery bowling en route to 6-41 off 16 overs. “He’s a really attacking bowler,” Yates said. “He actually got three of his wickets with his short balls. He bowled a really good first spell, hit the stumps and beat the bat a fair few times. “He’s bowled really well all season … he hasn’t really got a big haul, but this week the hard work he’s put in came to fruition.” Shannon Clarke built the pressure for Altona from the other end. He was tireless, bowling 17 overs straight in his first spell. He finished with 2-45 off 23 overs, including the huge scalps of Graeme Rummans and Jacob Thorne. “They’re the two premier players going around,” Yates said. The only headache for Altona was a raft of dropped catches late in the day. “They were mostly after tea time when the boys were starting to get a little bit tired. It cost us 40 or 50 runs.” Elsewhere, Williamstown posted 238 in its top six bout with Melton, led by captain Brent McMinn, who scored 96. Yarraville has the upper hand against Taylors Lakes, requiring 192 for victory.

■ The

values that sport can bring to our lives are best illustrated by two stories this week. The first is tragic and involves the loss of two young lives – Jason Gilham and Brad Dobney. The pair, both 27, died as the result of a motor vehicle accident in Altona just before Christmas. They were well known in local cricket and football circles through the Williamstown and St. Johns cricket clubs and the Willy CYMS and Wyndhamvale All Abilities football clubs. Jason’s father Scott is a life member of Williamstown Cricket Club and the Western Bulldogs. The two cricket clubs have organised a T20 match this Sunday with proceeds going to the Road Trauma Support Services. The teams are playing for the Gillo Nobbers Cup in memory of Jason and Brad. Gates open at 1pm with the game starting at 2pm. Hopefully this can become an annual event to honour the pair and to remind us all of how precious life is.

the recent announcement of new life members to the AFL, the 2018 recipient of the Jack Titus Award was also announced – Bill Hector from the Western Bulldogs. Bill marked his 50th year at the club and in that time his main job was timekeeper, a role he inherited from his father Norm who also clocked up (no pun intended) 50 years with the red, white and blue. When the AFL took the timekeeping duties away from clubs, Bill continued in that role but also filled many other roles at Whitten Oval, including property steward, senior doorman and match-day assistant. He is a life member of the Bulldogs. This latest acknowledgement is very fitting.

Bulldogs share AFLW leadership duties The Western Bulldogs have appointed co-captains for their AFL Women’s premiership defence. Katie Brennan, the club’s inaugural team leader, will be joined by onballer Ellie Blackburn in a new-look captaincy structure. They will be part of a six-player leadership group that also includes Hannah Scott, Nicole Hallinan, Isabel Huntington and Kirsty Lamb. Bulldogs coach Paul Groves said all those players had good track records of setting positive examples for their teammates. “It’s a really exciting core group that the team has voted in as their leaders,” Groves said. “There were two outstanding girls [Brennan and Blackburn] who, over the course of two years, have really evolved and been incredible leaders for this club. “The strength we will receive with both Katie and Ellie working together will allow our group to continue to evolve both on and off the field.” Brennan is looking forward to sharing the workload with Blackburn, having been a

In a memorable moment, Blackburn invited Brennan up on the dais to accept the premiership cup. “I have so much belief in this group and I can’t wait to see what we can achieve together in 2019 and beyond with an expanded leadership group,” Blackburn said. Big-time thumping leaves Bulldogs on the finals outer

Yarraville-Footscray coach Wayne Roberts could sense early into Saturday’s heavy defeat to Deer Park in Bowls Victoria premier division that his side was in trouble. The Bulldogs were jumped out of the blocks, down in all rinks after five ends and playing catch-up against a strong side with intentions of going all the way this season. “You could smell it in the air – we were in trouble after four or five ends,” Roberts said. “We did fight our way back to get within about 10 … I thought, ‘We’ve stopped the bleeding’. But then they rallied again and we were never in it from halfway onwards.” The final outcome was an emphatic 106-56 win to Deer Park, which scooped all 18 points from four winning rinks. Deer Park also quite possibly settled the top four, with Roberts conceding his fifth-placed team – 26 points out of the top four with five games to go – faces an uphill task to break into the finals positions.

“We didn’t get a point, so that really hurts,” Roberts said. “We’ve not given up on the top four, but the odds are that we’re probably not going to make it.” Roberts has been proud of YarravilleFootscray this season and counts the heavy defeat as an aberration. But like the heavy defeat to Melbourne in the first half of the season, a big loss can come back to bite. “All our players wear the shirt with pride and every week we go out and try and do our best,” Roberts said. “Some days it works, some days it doesn’t. “That’s probably been our biggest fault – we can come out and beat some top teams, but when we do come out and have a bad day, we really do have a bad day.” Yarraville-Footscray has two weeks to lick its wounds. The Bulldogs will have a thorough review and Roberts has flagged changes for their next clash against Essendon.

“We’ll review it like we review all results, good and bad,” he said. “We’ll sit down and have a look and try and tweak it and make it better. “We’ll make some changes – a couple of sideways moves and we might drop a couple of players. “We’ve got good players, good people, we’ll move on and give it our best shot in a fortnight’s time.” Meanwhile, Altona will need a miracle to play finals after a nail-biting 82-80 loss to Bundoora RSL away on Saturday. The A’s are a massive 46 points outside the top four with five rounds to go. A’s stars Dane McKinnon, Nathan Wilson (men’s team) and Blaine Edwards (women’s team) will be in action this week for Victoria in a Test series against New South Wales on the Central Coast. Russ finds sweet spot By Lance Jenkinson Footscray coach Stan Nell is staggered that batsman Dean Russ has barely had a look-in for Victoria in first-class cricket. After admiring Russ from afar, Nell has had a front-row view of his brilliance since taking over as coach of the Bulldogs this season. Russ, Nell believes, may have become a victim of the modern day trend of selectors trying to find the next big thing instead of picking players on form. Another season, another summer of dominance from Russ – but still no indication of an imminent call-up. “My view about ‘Russy’ is that he’s a first-class cricketer playing club cricket – that’s my assessment,” Nell said. “Selection now is not as clear-cut as it used to be. For 150 years that cricket has been played, selection was based on performance, but we seem to have gone away from that a little bit. “I can understand the philosophy of identifying players young and exposing them. “But when you get a player like ‘Russy’ going the way he is – and the way he’s been going for the last three years – you’ve really got to scratch your head and ask how come he’s not playing first-class cricket.” With Victoria sitting on top of the Sheffield Shield ladder, Russ provided a little reminder to state selectors of his ability with 85 off 116 balls in Footscray’s four-wicket Premier Cricket loss to Essendon in a one-day game at Windy Hill on Saturday. It was a knock produced in tough conditions, on a rain-affected track and against a top-shelf bowling unit. It came a week after Russ had smashed 107 against Kingston Hawthorn. That was Russ’ third century of the summer following tons against Prahran and Ringwood before Christmas. Oh, he also scored 91 against Carlton back in round one. Russ is also a handy part-time bowler with nine wickets at 28. Nell believes Russ is still in his sweet spot as a batsman and will be for some time. “Those results are not surprising to me,” Nell said. “He’s probably in the middle of his best batting years now. “The next two years, he’ll be able to produce some really amazing results as a batsman in Premier Cricket. “How could you not talk him up and like his cricket?” Footscray did well to push towards 6-193 off its 42 overs after play was delayed due to a wet pitch. Bulldogs captain Dylan Kight added 33 and his brother, Jordan, made 28, but Russ was the anchor of the innings. “The batting was excellent under the conditions, which were really difficult,” Nell said. “And Essendon have got a fairly mature

bowling side. They batted really well to put up that total.” Footscray’s use of the new ball was unsightly. Essendon raced to 50 in no time and never looked back. The only speed bump came in the form of Bulldog left-arm orthodox spinner Siddesh Dixit, who continued his stellar form with 2-31 off nine overs. “Unfortunately, when it came to the fielding side of it, the bowlers didn’t open up too well,” Nell said.

“It was a disappointing start with the ball and we never really recovered from that. “We’ve got a good pace bowling unit, they’re a mature unit and I would’ve expected better of them on the day. “I know Dylan has spoken with the boys and I’ll certainly have a chat with them, but we’ll move on to the next game now.” If Footscray is to keep its slim finals hopes alive, it must beat ninth-placed Camberwell Magpies in a two-day game at Merv Hughes Oval that starts on Saturday.

Yarraville Club has breathed life into its finals push with a five-wicket mauling of Seddon in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association senior division. Entering the round at the bottom of the ladder, the Clubbers made sure it was a short stint in the cellar and dismantled the Dockers at Hanmer Reserve. The Clubbers were on song with the ball, rolling Seddon for just 66. New ball users Will Sheridan (5-23) and Emmett Bronca (3-23) were on top of their game for the Clubbers. However, the Clubbers lost five wickets en route to the target with Justin Baker top scoring with 18. Spotswood entered the top four with a hard-fought 10-run win over Strathmore at Lebanon Reserve. The Woodsmen posted 9-137 off their 40 overs, thanks largely to Gene Maurice (54) and Declan O’Brien (49). In division 1, Altona North got the better of Druids by four wickets, while Laverton went down to Airport West St Christophers by 10 runs. In division 2, Newport-Digman beat Pascoe Vale Hadfield by 44 runs, but it was a disappointing weekend for Kingsville, losing to Altona Roosters by four wickets, and Williamstown CYMS, downed by Glenroy by 22 runs.
