By Goya Dmytryshchak Plans to build a 24-hour police station at Altona have been welcomed by residents and traders. Victoria Police has lodged a planning permit application with Hobsons Bay council to build a station in Galvin Street, at the western end of Civic Parade. Victoria Police spokeswoman Lisa Beechey said the contemporary station would replace the ageing one in Altona North. “Land has been acquired and design and planning is well under way for a new police station, which will be built on Galvin Street, Altona,” she said. “The new station is government-funded to replace the current Altona North police station on Cooper Avenue, which is old and outdated.” She said the new station was expected to be operational in 2020. The last police station in Altona, at the corner of Blyth Street and Valletta Lane, closed in 1978. Prior to that, there was a police station on the corner of Blyth and Sargood streets. Altona Village Traders Association president Kim Walsh, a former police detective, said businesses would be

pleased to have a police station closer to Altona beach and the Pier Street shopping precinct. “Our beach is becoming more and more popular with surrounding suburbs – people coming in to visit our beach,” he said. “It’s nice to know that in the event of any trouble … the police are a lot closer than what they are from Altona North. “Their response time will hopefully be a lot quicker. “The long-term Altona residents would be extremely happy that we are getting our police station back. “After all these years, it’s coming back to Altona where it belongs.” Plans for the new station show 59 on-site car spaces, one bay for a booze bus and three spots for stolen vehicles. A report prepared for Victoria Police says the new station is aimed at ensuring “a stronger police presence in the Hobsons Bay area”. “Should a significant event occur in the municipality of Hobsons Bay or immediate area, the new police station has also been designed to accommodate a higher level of serving members to ensure that the community is served appropriately,” the report states.

Move to save bilingual program By Benjamin Millar The west’s only bilingual school program may be back next year despite being scrapped by the school. Footscray Primary School last week wrote to parents announcing the school has not employed enough qualified teachers to staff the Vietnamese bilingual program for 2019. The letter, from principal Philip Fox, stated that a “number of different options” were being considered in place of the long-running practice of classes being taught in Vietnamese for up to five hours a week. The immersive language program previously

faced the axe in 2016 until being saved by a parent-led campaign and intervention by the state education minister. Star Weekly understands the co-ordinator of the program has taken up a position at another school after learning it would not be continued. But following outcry from parents and Vietnamese community leaders, the Department of Education and Training has vowed to work with Footscray Primary School to recruit bilingual teachers for 2019. “While the school is currently experiencing some difficulty staffing their Vietnamese bilingual program, the Footscray community can be assured that the department will

reinstate the program as soon as an appropriate teacher is found,” a spokeswoman said. “Language and culture are an important part of keeping schools at the heart of communities, and Footscray Primary School is a great example of this.” Hoang Tran Nguyen, a father of two at the school, said parents had been disappointed by the scrapping. “I was born in Vietnam and came to Australia as part of the Vietnamese refugee diaspora,” he said. “The program has roots in the migrant diaspora in the area, and with the recent changes to the area I think it’s even more

Sunning seal steals the show A seal was spotted making itself at home at Altona beach last week, with more expected to visit Port Phillip Bay over summer. The Australian fur seal appeared to be sunning itself in shallow water. Altona resident Gary Pisani said delighted onlookers were keeping their distance, as required by law. He said concerned passers-by notified the authorities to ensure the seal wasn’t injured. “The wildlife [authorities] basically said, ‘Look it’s all clear, it’s OK’,” he said. “Most likely, it’s just probably resting there.” The seal then swam to some rocks where another local resident George Spiteri took a photo. “I had some time to kill before doing the regular kinder drop-off and decided to take the little one for a walk to the beach directly at the end of our street,” he said. “Before you know it, there was a seal there that we’d never seen before. “We walked across to the rocks to watch it from a safe distance and it waddled back into the water and made its way over to the rocks. “It looked a little tired, but relieved to have a rock to lie on and some warm early morning sun hitting it on its back.” The Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning reminded people not to approach seals. “People must remain 30 metres away from a seal on land, and five metres from a seal on man-made structures like a jetty or boat ramp,” said senior wildlife officer Abby Smith. “Dogs are required to be kept at least 50 metres away. “We recommend that members of the community do not disturb seals on land and allow them the opportunity to rest.” If anyone sees an injured, sick or distressed seal, they should call the AGL Marine Response Unit on 1300 AGL MRU (1300 245 678). important to have something like this.” School council president Justin Mansfield said the council was taken by surprise by the decision. Mr Mansfield said the decision was especially concerning given the promise of a review of the program slated for next year. Vietnamese Community in Australia Victorian Chapter president Viv Nguyen wrote to the school, Footscray MP Katie Hall and Education Minister James Merlino seeking intervention to ensure the program can run until a review is undertaken. Star Weekly sought comment from the school and the office of Mr Merlino.

Police probe hate stickers Neo-nazi hate stickers plastered around Williamstown this month are being investigated by police. Anti-Defamation Commission chairman Dvir Abramovich said members of the public had reported the disturbing stickers advertising the Antipodean Resistance. “It is chilling to think that in 2018 parents and children are forced to confront sickening Nazi posters that have invaded and violated the streets of Williamstown, placed by a white-supremacist group that proudly declares itself to be the ‘Hitlers you’ve been waiting for’,” he said. “Imagine the immense anguish a Holocaust survivor or their children would feel upon seeing such vile flyers. “We should all be alarmed that these preachers of hate are openly peddling their virulently bigoted message and are ramping up their disruptive campaign of harassment and recruitment.” Williamstown Senior Sergeant Chris Allen said the matter was under investigation and the offender could be prosecuted for a number of crimes. “It’s offensive behaviour or bill posting, which does have a maximum term of three months in prison,” he said. “It is worrying that someone is in the community putting these types of stickers on poles.” Hobsons Bay mayor Jonathon Marsden said the community would not tolerate such hate. “Any poster promoting the genocidal ideology of the Nazi regime is utterly unwelcome in Hobsons Bay.”

By Goya Dmytryshchak Fifty years after standing in solidarity with athletes giving the black power salute, Williamstown sprinter Peter Norman will have the Newport athletics track renamed in his honour. A plan to name it the Peter Norman Athletics Track has been taken up by Hobsons Bay council for community feedback. Mr Norman claimed silver at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics by running 200 metres in 20.06 seconds – still an Australian record. But he is widely remembered for his support of African American runners Tommie Smith and John Carlos, who raised their fists in silent protest on the medal dias – a moment captured in what Time magazine called the most iconic photograph of all time. Mr Norman wore an Olympic Project for Human Rights badge in support and it was his suggestion that Smith and Carlos each wear one glove after they forgot to bring two pairs. Mr Norman’s wife, Jan, who met her husband when they were both teachers at the then Williamstown Technical School, said it would be wonderful to have the Newport track named after him. He died in 2006. “It makes me feel really proud,” she said. “I’m really rapt at the fact that it’s local. “It’s all very well to see the statue going up at the running track at Albert Park, but it’s just lovely to have the running track at Newport named after Peter. “I belong to the gym there, so I feel a real connection – and, being a teacher, all those sport days that I spent supervising those kids at the running track and various other functions I’ve attended. I think it’s great that it’s going to be named after Peter.” Smith and Carlos came to Williamstown in

Traders petition for free parking By Goya Dmytryshchak A petition calling for reduced parking fees and free parking in winter in Williamstown’s Nelson Place will be considered as part of the ‘Parking in Hobsons Bay’ review being undertaken by the council. As reported by Star Weekly in October, lead petitioner Sash Boseovski said traders were suffering from the effect of $3.50 per hour parking fees operating from 9am-10pm. Last week’s council meeting heard that although a three-month free parking trial

was undertaken in 2015, there was never a commitment to make it permanent. “We accept that things can be a bit tough, particularly in the winter months, and that’s why I moved back in 2015 in fact for us to have that [free] winter trial,” Cr Angela Altair told the meeting. “As a result of that trial, we did quite a bit of research. We met with local traders and we developed a very extensive action plan, and a lot of that has been carried out in the meantime, including a number of free short-term parking spots and enhancing that precinct in many

The little club that could Williamstown lifesavers are ending the year as champions of the world. Williamstown Swimming and Life Saving Club’s inflatable rescue boat squad won gold at the Lifesaving World Championships in Adelaide. The team of 25 competed against clubs from countries around the world including Belgium, Denmark, Great Britain, Japan, New Zealand and Wales. Coach Scott Ivey said it wasn’t a bad result for a “little bay club”. “This year we’ve won absolutely everything that was on offer,” he said. “We won the Victorian premiership series, the Victorian state championships, the Australian championships. “Eight of the 10 competitors selected for the Australian national team were from Williamstown. And then we’ve won the world titles as well.

“It’s definitely the first time a Victorian club has ever done anything like this. “When we first started competing against the surf clubs, that’s what we were referred to as: ‘Oh, the little bay club’s here, watch out for the waves, don’t get scared boys.’ ‘Now, we go to the beach and show them how it’s done I suppose.” The Lifesaving World Championships are held every two years, with the next event to be held in Italy. other ways. “We never made any commitment to introduce free parking in winter on a regular basis and I think we need to make that clear to people who have signed the petition, but of course we are committed to working with those traders and to explore every opportunity to improve and enhance the business along Nelson Place.” She noted that Hobsons Bay residents were eligible to apply for a permit that gave them free parking. “We need to emphasise that because our past

research shows that the main [customers] come from local people,” Cr Altair said. The petition also requested that council allocate a marketing budget for Nelson Place from parking revenue and hire an independent consultant to analyse and compare Nelson Place meter fees with similar areas. An officer’s report stated that the council allocated annual funding directly to trader associations with the Williamstown Chamber of Commerce and Altona Village Traders Association, as the two major trader groups in Hobsons Bay, each receiving $30,000 annually.

Vietnamese centre’s $4.45m lift By Benjamin Millar Australia’s first Vietnamese cultural and heritage centre is on track to be built in the heart of Footscray following a $4.45 million funding pledge by the state government. The $20 million centre, to be built on a donated council carpark in Donald Street, could be open by 2025 to coincide with the 50th

anniversary of the first wave of Vietnamese refugee arrivals. The Vietnamese Community in Australia Victorian Chapter has been working on the project since 2002, but had struggled to find a suitable site. VCA president Viv Nguyen said the community was grateful to the state government for stepping in to assist the project.

“We are getting closer to the end of our design phase, so we can start to work with Maribyrnong council on the plans,” she said. The VCA is hoping to secure funding support from the federal government and is also raising funds within the Vietnamese community. Visiting Footscray to announce the state government funding, Planning Minister Richard Wynne thanked the VCA for

championing the project and Maribyrnong council for gifting the land. Premier Daniel Andrews said the investment would help build a space dedicated to celebrating the culture and contributions of Victoria’s proud Vietnamese communities. “This museum will be an Australian-first – and it’s only fitting that we build it right here in the multicultural capital of our nation,” he said.

Lunar’s colourful line-up The multicultural spirit is alive and well in Maribyrnong and will be celebrated in January when the East Meets West Lunar New Year Festival lights up Footscray. The day-long festival will welcome the Year of the Pig with a colourful street parade, cultural dances, musical performances, food stalls and carnival rides. The event will be rounded out with lion dancing and a fire cracker display. Since being launched more than 20 years ago by the local Vietnamese community, the New Year festivities have grown to showcase a broad spectrum of the west’s cultural diversity. From its Vietnamese roots the festival has expanded to embrace the Chinese, Thai, Cambodian and Philippines communities, more recently welcoming on board the wider African communities as well. The 2019 East Meets West Lunar New Year Festival event will be held in central Footscray from 10am-10pm Sunday, January 13.

Fresh look at residential zones By Goya Dmytryshchak Hobsons Bay council is redrafting residential zones enabling development of more than four storeys in some neighbourhoods after receiving 57 submissions. As reported by Star Weekly in September, the council must implement new zones, as directed by the state government, to manage residential growth. Three proposed zones are: neighbourhood residential zone with a two storey limit; general

residential zone (GRZ) capped at three storeys; and residential growth zone (RGZ) with a discretionary height of four storeys. Last week’s council meeting heard the main submission concerns were three-storey developments in Altona, four-storey developments in Newport and, conversely, underdevelopment in Altona, Altona North, South Kingsville and Altona Meadows. A report tabled at the meeting stated that submitters generally understood the reasons for concentrating residential growth in and

around Altona’s Pier Street major activity centre, but felt the three-storey zone had been too widely applied. “There is a concern that the widespread application of the GRZ will result in too many three-storey apartments and townhouses, which may impact the village feel of Altona, further exacerbate the perceived parking and traffic congestion issues, and put further strain on the drainage and sewerage infrastructure,” the report stated. Many submitters were concerned about a

proposed RGZ in Newport’s Durkin, Mirls and Derwent streets. “Submitters believe that this location is not suited to higher-density development due to the heritage properties, neighbourhood character, narrow streets, and parking issues,” the officer’s report stated. Council officers will amend the residential zones, after which people will have another chance to provide feedback. Hobsons Bay’s population is expected to grow from 95,395 to 112,462 by 2036.

Slow going for 232 bus Once a week, Brooklyn’s Toby Chan’s bus arrives about 20 minutes late. This leaves him waiting for 40 minutes for the Transdev 232 bus to arrive at his stop outside Southern Cross. Mr Chan is also often kept waiting while he’s on the bus. Two weeks ago, the 232 got caught in a traffic jam on the West Gate Bridge. The 12-kilometre bus trip from Brooklyn to the city should take about half an hour, but instead took two hours. “The trip is quite challenging most of the time,” Mr Chan said. Mr Chan takes the bus twice a day and estimates the service linking Altona North and the city is either early or late every second trip. Data obtained under freedom of information laws reveals that only 54 per cent of buses on Mr Chan’s route were on time in March this year. The 232 bus is the most delayed Transdev service. French-based multinational company Transdev operates 46 public bus services

in Melbourne. It signed up to a $1.7 billion performance-based contract with the Victorian government in 2013. Only once has it met its contractual target of 85 per cent punctuality. In the first half of this year, only 80 per cent of buses were on time. Acting managing director Nikki Allder, blamed delays on worsening traffic congestion and road works. “With the majority of our bus routes running through the city, our services have been particularly impacted by the significant infrastructure works under way in Melbourne over the last 12 months,” she said. Next year, Transdev will have the option to extend its contract for three years. A government spokeswoman said: “Our new contracts for the first time will put the passenger experience first – and we look forward to working with the contractors.”

MY PLACE Altona resident and Altona Primary School principal Kevin Enright is spending his last day at school on December 19, retiring after two decades at the helm. He speaks with Goya Dmytryshchak. What’s your connection to Hobsons Bay?

And the community. I mean the families are just brilliant in Altona and I’ve developed a connection with many, many families over the 19, 20 years that I’ve been there. I’ll still have that connection walking around Altona because I live there but it won’t be the same, I suppose.

I was born in Hobsons Bay, in Newport. My mother still lives there, in the family home. So, I went to primary school there, secondary school, and played football locally and cricket locally for Spotswood and Yarraville.

What’s your favourite place to grab a meal or a coffee?

What do you like about Altona? What I really like about Altona is obviously the beach. All the local facilities, the cafes and restaurants, and there’s a real sense of community in Hobsons Bay, which I really like.

I like Pier 71 in Pier Street, which is an Italian restaurant. I really like the food there. I like the staff – they’re very friendly, very efficient. It’s always a really good place to go and it’s authentic Italian cuisine. I love Italy and I love going there and one of the highlights is the food over there and Pier 71 replicates that here in Altona, so that’s fantastic. I also like Harmony, which is a Vietnamese restaurant right next door, which is really nice too.

What don’t you like? I really can’t think of anything I don’t like or that I want to change. It’s the end of an era for your teaching career. Can you tell me about how you came to be Altona Primary’s principal?

What does retirement hold for you? (Damjan Janevski)

I’ve taught across quite a number of schools across the western suburbs and western region. I was assistant principal at a school which was called Derrimut Heath Primary School but it’s now called Baden Powell College and from there I was lucky enough to apply for the job at Altona Primary and be successful. In those days, it was a much smaller school of just over 200 children and it’s now a very thriving larger school, which offers every single possible opportunity that kids could want, not just in terms of literacy and numeracy but all the other skills of art, music, phys ed

and an extremely amazing IT program. What will you miss most? I’ll really miss all the students. We’ve got fabulous students and every day they’ll come

up and say hello to you and smile and really engage you in conversation. I’ll really miss working with the staff there; once again, very committed, highly skilled and just terrific people to work with – inspirational people.

I have a couple of grandchildren, so it holds some babysitting. Having time to do the things that I like to do that I maybe haven’t had time to do being principal. And some travel. Just at this stage probably Spain, France, Germany, America, just to name a few. What’s something that people would be surprised to know about you? In my spare time, I like to go down to Ocean Grove and catch waves on my surf ski.

JOHN BURNS CO-HOST, 3AW BREAKFAST SHOW

SPLICE OF HEAVEN with Sarah Patterson

FB: How would you rate yourself as a cook? JB: Look, I’ve been practising for a long time and I’m sort of getting there. I can manage. My favourite signature dish is oxtail ragut. It’s a recipe I’ve adapted from a Robert Carrier cookbook. It was given to my wife when we got engaged. FB: What is your favourite food? JB: I reckon – quite seriously – the most delicious thing on the planet is a Four ‘n’ Twenty pie or a potato cake from Fish Fetish, the fish shop next door to the Continental Hotel in Sorrento. FB: Working breakfast hours, do you get through a lot of coffee? JB: Look, I’m not a mad coffee nut. The modern fashion of going out for coffee doesn’t appeal to me. It’s just coffee. I’ll have an instant coffee when I get in (to work) and when I get home I’ll have an instant coffee with a cigar, and then that’s it for the day. FB: Which five people would you most like to invite to dinner? JB: Jesus, Michael Caine, Nigella Lawson, Lady Gaga and Mr Creosote from Monty Python’s The Meaning of Life … the bloke who came in and exploded (to finish the night off with a ‘bang’.)

As always, if you have any recipes, tips or other info you’d like to share, email me at sarah@howdypartnersmedia.com.au

FB: Do you have a kitchen tip for us? JB: Absolutely. Throw out all your stainless-steel knives and get a high quality Japanese carbon steel knife. The only place to buy them is in the market in Kyoto. I’ve got five of them and they’re worth every penny. The other knives – you can’t get an edge on them. If you look after your Japanese carbon steel knives, they’re just works of art.

It just happened to be a stinking hot, 38 degree day in Melbourne when I posed the question on the Food Bytes Facebook page: Which do you prefer, a Golden Gaytime or Pine Lime Splice? Who knew ice creams could be such a polarising topic? We do a regular little weekly survey called the Friday Food Poll, and it has to be said that this one went absolutely bananas. Maybe it was the heat getting to us all! For Rob it was all about the time and place: “Splice outdoors during the day, Gaytime watching a movie on the couch.” Nadine would choose the Pine Lime Splice on a hot day, but a Golden Gaytime on the cooler ones: “Best of both worlds,” she says. For Lina, it’s “Pine Lime Splice by a street,” but Fran says there’s no contest – it’s Golden Gaytime all the way. For Mark, price equates to quality. As he remembers it from days gone by, “The Splice was in the 50 cent category, just above the lowly icy pole. The Gaytime was well above that, approaching the exorbitant one dollar level, up there on the level of the Heart and Choc Block.” What’s your go-to ice cream on a hot day?

“We all eat, and it would be a sad waste of opportunity to eat badly” Anna Thomas (author)

A STAR WEEKLY FEATURE

Furniture proprietor Segundo Granada and senior furniture sales assistant Melissa Brown; (right) Harvey Norman Maribyrnong’s computer, bedding, electrical and furniture departments. (Photos: Damjan Janevski)

New showroom steps Harvey Norman up a notch Harvey Norman Maribyrnong is the go-to store for furniture, technology, flooring, bedding and electrical. One of the first stores in the area, Harvey Norman Maribyrnong has been servicing the local community for more than 22 years, but it has now stepped up a notch as a shopping experience, becoming one of the biggest stores in the West. With its newly renovated showroom displaying a range of products, Harvey Norman Maribyrnong is your one-stop-shop for all household needs. Proprietors Segundo Granada (Furniture department) and Lorry Renda (Computer department) both started their careers at Harvey Norman as floor staff, meaning they know their businesses inside out and are super-proud of what they can offer to their customers. “Our new showroom is world class,” says Lorry. “The new layout improves our customers’ shopping experience, with customer service a top priority. We’ve gone all out and put a lot of effort into making shopping under one roof a positive event for all customers.” Segundo says the store’s staff members are experienced and friendly people willing to help customers in every way they can. “Most of our team have had years of retail and sales experience and really know their products. Whether in Computers, Furniture, Flooring, Bedding or Electrical, our staff love to help customers and put their satisfaction as a top priority,” he says. “Customers who might need a hand in choosing the right product for them couldn’t come to a better place. “Our product range is vast enough to cater for all our customers’ wants and needs. We have such a big store and stock a huge range of items, so our customers leave very happy with their finds.” FURNITURE DEPARTMENT From apartment living to large family homes, traditional styles to modern living and everything in between, Segundo says there is something to suit everyone’s tastes for every room of the house in Harvey Norman Maribyrnong’s Furniture department.

“Our wide range caters for any home,” he says. “Our displays are arranged so customers can see how how the product may look in their own home and show the potential of the piece of furniture. “Customers can just come in and say, ‘Yeah, I like that piece’ and take it away with them.” Recliners, fabric and leather lounges, dining suites and even a range of the best barbecues and outdoor furniture – they’re all at the Maribyrnong store, with many products ready for immediate pick-up or delivery. TECHNOLOGY DEPARTMENT “The HP Spectre Folio 2-in-1 laptop for $3299 – a first with 100 per cent leather exterior needs to be seen to be believed,” says Lorry. HP, Microsoft Surface range, laptops, notebooks, mobile phones, headphones, bluetooth speakers and some great Optus deals are all on offer. And advice is readily at hand. FLOORING DEPARTMENT “Novocore is a new hybrid hard floor product,” department head Sam Arefin says. “A step up from vinyl, yet with the look of a timber, it’s waterproof, has cork backing for comfort and an antibacterial finish – perfect for pets and kids.” Carpet (check out the new smartstrand selections) and timber and laminate flooring in a wide selection of shades and grains are all in stock to see and touch. Rugs are a specialty, with the Maribyrnong store selling more than any other Harvey Norman outlet for the past five years. “Our staff really know the products and can advise customers on the right one for their project, in terms of style and budget,” Sam says. “We also offer free in-home quotes.”

In a blue-chip location, within an amble of Williamstown beach, botanic gardens and train station, this distinctive house has oodles of living space and a paved courtyard for outdoor life out back. Entry, beneath a corbelled arch, is to a large living room with polished floorboards, stepped cornices and skirts and lace at windows. A door opens from here to the kitchen on one side and laundry and toilet on the other, with a tiled spacious family area beyond. The kitchen has lots of white cupboards, glossy marble-look laminate, white subway tiles on splashbacks and all the mod-cons. All four bedrooms and main bathroom are at the top of carpeted stairs. Each is under a vaulted ceiling, while the main has an en suite. Included are ducted heating, evaporative cooling, intercom and security system and a garage with access from the rear.

In a prized locale within steps of Cruickshank Park, this California bungalow on about 510 square metres has rich period detail that’s buttressed by a contemporary makeover that cleverly salutes rather than mimics. The four bedrooms (one with fireplace, three with robes) range along a wide floorboarded hallway with deep skirts and low dado rails. Bedroom windows have beautiful leadlight arched transoms and share two bathrooms, one more heritage style with clawfoot tub, stained-glass porthole window and mosaic floor feature; the other sleek and modern with walk-in shower. The kitchen has oodles of classy joinery, black granite benches and splashbacks and all mod-cons. The floorboarded living area, under a pitched ceiling, has french doors with amazing transoms opening to a deck and pristine backyard. Yarraville Village and station are within a 10-minute walk.

Price: $690,000 – $750,000

This Edwardian cottage proves that gorgeous things can come in smaller parcels. It’s been beautifully revamped and is loaded with charm, from the leadlight front door through to a leafy deck out back. The two carpeted and fitted bedrooms along the floorboard entry hall sit each side of a chic fully tiled bathroom. This has a freestanding tub beneath sash windows, a walk-in shower and a bowl basin atop a reclaimed timber vanity; an included European laundry is discreet. The floorboarded living room incorporates a sleek kitchen with white joinery offering ample storage, an island bench with wine rack beneath, and stainless-steel appliances. Bifolds open right up to the covered deck where the fence is screened in bamboo and plantings enfold with their greenery.

With a striking street presence and bright and contemporary interior, this townhouse – one of only three in the complex – is a beauty for a young couple who will value being close to Pier Street, the beach and Westona station. Entry is directly into a spacious living domain where white wall paint, charcoal-framed multi-paned windows with vertical blinds and floating floorboards hit on-trend notes. The two carpeted bedrooms are upstairs, both with walk-in robes. One has an en suite and the other neighbours a smart bathroom with a spa. The kitchen has ample wood-grain laminate cabinetry, walk-in pantry, glossy tiled splashbacks and underbench oven, gas cooktop and dishwasher. A powder room is tucked behind the staircase and the laundry is accessed from the garage. There’s a lawned courtyard out back to set up table and chairs.

The forecast for Melbourne – falling prices followed by moderate growth After a tumultuous 12 months for Australia’s property markets, 2019 looks likely to be a year of greater stability. That’s not to say prices won’t fall further, but the pace of those falls will slow in the first half of the year before we move into another moderate growth phase, reports Trent Wiltshire, Domain economist. We expect Sydney and Melbourne will be two of the weakest markets in 2019 and forecast prices to grow at about 4 per cent in 2020. We expect the falls experienced by Sydney and Melbourne in the 2017-19 period will prove to be the largest since the late 1980s. But it’s worth remembering these falls have come on the back of an extraordinary period of rapid growth. Investor caution, tighter bank lending practices, weak sentiment and new housing supply weighed on prices in 2018 and will continue to push prices lower in the next few months. But we expect things to turn around slowly in 2019. Banks and potential borrowers should adjust to tighter lending standards, with lending growth to resume but at a more moderate pace. Also supporting house prices will be projected strong (albeit slowing) population growth, lower unemployment, faster wage growth and increasing first home-buyer activity. A number of factors could result in prices deviating from the forecasts. The major downside risks include mortgage rates rising earlier and faster than expected; banks tightening lending even further; slower population growth; forced selling by investors; and a slowdown in the Chinese economy. On the other hand, a possible slowdown in housing construction, government

intervention to support the market and a stronger economy could mean price growth is stronger than we forecast. The impact of the Labor Party’s proposed changes to negative gearing is more uncertain. The reform will likely push prices lower eventually, but may actually support prices in the next six to 18 months. We expect Melbourne house prices to decline by about one per cent in 2019 after a nine per cent fall in 2018. We forecast that Melbourne house prices will rise by

about four per cent in 2020. They are predicted to fall by about 11 per cent from a peak average of $910,000 in December, 2017, to a low point of about $800,000 in mid-2019. Melbourne unit prices are expected to fall by about one to two per cent in 2018, and then prices are expected to grow by about one per cent in 2019 and 2020. Melbourne unit prices are predicted to fall by about three per cent from their peak of $507,000 in March, 2017, to about $490,000.

Tighter lending conditions and weak sentiment will weigh on Melbourne property prices in 2019. But Victoria’s unemployment rate is falling and Melbourne’s population growth is expected to remain very strong, with annual growth remaining above two per cent over the next few years. That will help to absorb the large pipeline of new housing supply expected to hit the market in the next couple of years. This story first appeared on domain.com.au

29 MARIBYRNONG & HOBSONS BAY STAR WEEKLY \ DECEMBER 19, 2018

SPORT Seagull star thrown an AFL lifeline

Michael Gibbons has one last chance to make it on to an AFL list next season after being invited to train with Carlton. (Damian Visentini)

The AFL door remains slightly ajar for Williamstown midfielder Michael Gibbons. There have been howls of discontent from players, coaches and supporters in the Victorian Football League after Gibbons was once again overlooked at the AFL’s national and rookie drafts, despite him being the VFL’s best-and-fairest player. There are no promises for the dual JJ Liston Trophy winner, but now Gibbons at least has hope after Carlton invited him to train with its team, along with former Dandenong Stingrays youngster Matthew Cottrell. The pair will vie for vacant spots on Carlton’s 2019 playing list. Gibbons can train with Carlton until the playing lists are finalised. The Blues will have to lodge their final squad by March 15. Gibbons was the king of the coal face in the VFL last season, averaging seven clearances a game. The 23-year-old averaged 28.6 disposals and 12 contested possessions. If Gibbons impresses and is signed by Carlton, he would become the fourth Williamstown player to be taken by an AFL club this year following the drafting of Ben Cavarra to the Western Bulldogs and Lachie Schultz and Brett Bewley to Fremantle. Should Gibbons not land on Carlton’s list, he will head back to Williamstown for the 2019 season.

Only hours before the news of the Carlton training invitation broke, Williamstown confirmed its star asset had re-signed. While Gibbons will be striving towards a spot on Carlton’s list, he will not put the cart before the horse and is excited about returning to Williamstown should an AFL spot not eventuate. “I love this club,” he said. “We are all striving for team success and hopefully we can build on what we did this year and go one step further.” In other signing news, Williamstown has brought in North Heidelberg trio Liam Hunt, Jesse Tardio and Jhye Baddeley-Kelly. Hunt, a former Northern Knights and Coburg inside midfielder, won the best-and-fairest at North Heidelberg last season. Tardio, also a midfielder, spent two seasons on the Northern Blues’ list after graduating from the Northern Knights. Baddeley-Kelly is a half-back who has risen up through community football. Williamstown general manager of football Stephen Soulsby was thrilled with the triple swoop. “Both Liam and Jesse wanted to return to VFL footy and it is great to have them come on board,” Soulsby said. “They will also add valuable support to Jhye in his first opportunity at VFL level.” Lance Jenkinson

Dogs miss by two runs By Lance Jenkinson An excruciating two-run loss has not dampened Footscray’s enthusiasm for the inaugural Super Slam Twenty20 tournament. The Bulldogs needed 12 runs to win off the last over against Essendon but just fell short in a thriller at Merv Hughes Oval. Bulldogs coach Stan Nell praised both sets of players for the show they put on. “It was a really good game of cricket,” he said. “Two very competitive sides. “We just fell short by a couple of runs, so we’re disappointed, but life goes on.” The T20 competition has extra significance for Premier Cricket clubs this summer. The top two sides in the competition will go on to play in a T20 tournament in Adelaide next year. Footscray’s hopes are still alive, but the loss to the Bombers means it cannot put a foot wrong in its remaining matches. While the Bulldogs have the one win, two of their matches were washed out and re-scheduled, so they can make up ground on the back of those results. “We’re behind two games, so if we win those two games we’re a chance to play in the final in our conference,” Nell said. “It’s become a case of having to win every game.” While the carrot of playing in the Super Slam finals in Adelaide is enticing, Footscray is not approaching the competition as cut-throat. The Bulldogs have opted to blood their youngsters in the competition and have not brought in a marquee player, which is allowed in this competition. “We’re playing all our club players,” Nell said. “We don’t have any imports and we’re not trying to be something that we’re not. “It’s a good opportunity for us to give some of the younger players an opportunity to play senior cricket and for us to have a look at them in action. “It gives them a chance to get a feel for what it’s like to play at that level.” One youngster who impressed for Footscray in the defeat to Essendon was opening batsman Nathan Caulfield. Set 159 for victory, Caulfield got the Bulldogs

IN THE DOGHOUSE ■ The successful bid by the Western Melbourne Group for an A-League team to be based in Tarneit is massive for sport in the west on so many levels. The purpose-built stadium and the associated facilities that will be part of the precinct won’t cost locals a cent and will bring not only an international sporting organisation to the west but much more. It was a bold bid and in the end I think that was what got them over the line. The ignorance of some of the comments from alleged experts regarding the Western Melbourne Group bid was incredible. The way some described it you would have thought the new stadium was being built in a remote, desolate enclave rarely seen by any civilised beings as opposed to Tarneit, a vibrant suburb with a growing population and facilities. Wyndham council backed the bid by gifting the land in-principal, a bold move and one they should feel good about. We all know there are needs and demands for money and support in other areas but the economic benefit of this to the City of Wyndham in particular will be enormous. ■ David Hayes knows horse flesh, as proven by his incredible training feats over decades in the racing industry. He obviously knows a bit about footy as well as he talked his son Will into not hanging up his boots at the end of 2017 and giving his dream one more shot. It paid off as Will won the Footscray VFL best and fairest, went on to be drafted to the Bulldogs in November and now is a professional footballer. Will and the other future stars of the club have been introduced to members and supporters at recent end of year functions. Will is a football stayer, having spent five years in the VFL system waiting for his chance. Williamstown coach Andy Collins spoke last week about the number of AFL-ready players in the VFL, citing Jack Charleston at the Seagulls as another who should get a chance. ■ I would like to wish all readers a very merry Christmas and a happy and safe new year. My thanks to those individuals and clubs who have contacted me during the year with news and stories. This column is all about the people who play, follow and are engaged in sports in the western suburbs. Thanks again to Westpoint Ford for their ongoing support which started on day one with Chris Byrne and continues with Daniel McKenzie, the new dealer principal into 2019.

off to a cracking start with 48 off 32, combining for a 76-run opening stand with veteran Dean Russ, who made 28 off 24. The duo of Dylan Kight (32 not out off 23) and Hamish Winter-Irving (26 off 16) got Footscray within touching distance, but the

run rate just became too much to maintain grip in the end. Nell was not too perturbed by the result. “You can over-analyse it sometimes, but we played a good game and so did Essendon, but they came out on top,” he said.

SPORT

Rising stars take on the world By Lance Jenkinson Ten elite young western suburbs athletes will be vying for the prestigious 2018 Don Deeble Sports Star award next month. The Deeble committee will reveal the name of this year’s champion athlete at an awards dinner on the last Wednesday in January. The first nominee was squash player Dylan Molinaro. Molinaro ended the year with selection in the Australian under-19 team after strong performances on the national and Oceania stage. Undaunted by the quality of opposition at the Oceania or Australian championships, he finished on the podium at both major events. While it was a tough year for Australian cricket, the sport is booming in the west. Local star Travis Dean was named Victorian captain and his young Footscray teammate, Dylan Brasher, was the March Deeble nominee after turning heads on the national stage. Brasher, 16, went from breaking records for Western Spirit at the under-18 state titles to

breaking SA bowlers’ hearts with a century at the nationals. Our first female nominee of the year came in April in the form of hammer thrower Louise Mendes. Mendes stamped herself as one of the most promising young throwing prospects in Australia when she took the state and national titles by storm.

The 19-year-old then got the chance to compete on the international stage in Finland, gaining priceless experience in her quest to one day represent Australia at open age level. Cycling sensation Luke Plapp was the May monthly winner. Plapp had a remarkable year on the bike, winning two World Junior Track Cycling Championship events and a silver in the World Time Trial Championships. Martial artist Bailey Lewis was the June nominee. Lewis clocked up the frequent flyer points to compete in the best taekwondo events in the world. The Werribee resident won state and national titles, as well as competitions in Oceania and Europe. Footballer Xavier O’Halloran started the year as the Western Jets’ captain and ended it as a first-round AFL draft pick for the GWS Giants. In between, O’Halloran was the July Deeble nominee and captain of Vic Metro. Hockey rising star Carly James has always been modest about her hockey career. Good thing the experts know a talented player when they see one because James is now part of the emerging Hockeyroos squad and was the Deeble nominee for August. Celeste Mucci achieved a lifelong dream by

representing Australia at the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast. The national heptathlon champion’s nomination for the September Deeble award was a given considering the heights she reached this year. Later in the year, Mucci captained the Australian under-20 team at the world championships. Baseballer Nikau Pouaka-Grego was the Deeble monthly winner for October. If Pouaka-Grego gets his way, he will one day be gracing the fields of the MLB or the ABL. If that eventuates, 2018 will be remembered as a stepping stone for the Newport Rams infielder. Pouaka-Grego got to strut his stuff for Australia at the Junior Baseball World Cup in Panama and finished the year achieving one of his goals – selection in the Victorian under 16 team for the national championships. The final nominee of the year was versatile track and field athlete Frank Mazza. Mazza could get a stiff neck holding up all the gold medals he won at the Victorian schools track and field championships. He proved to be a true all-rounder, winning gold in the javelin, long jump, triple jump and hurdles.
