Marian’s tree of life By Goya Dmytryshchak For Marian Osborn’s loved ones, it was a poetic way to honour the lifeblood of the family. For the first time in Melbourne’s west, a person’s scientifically transformed cremated remains have been infused into the root ball of a tree for planting at a cemetery. Marian’s “Living Legacy” memorial tree at Altona Memorial Park is the culmination of three years work by the Greater Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust and biotech firm Living Legacy Forest, founded in Melbourne five years ago. Marian’s husband, retired mathematician and physicist Don Osborn, said she had, in a way, been immortalised and was generating new life.

we chose the bloodwood [tree] – it’s kind of like her blood is now the blood of the tree. “It means that in some way she’s continuing to live – and that’s a pretty cool thing.” Living Legacy Forest founder Warren Roberts said the trees represented a fundamental shift. “People can connect to what life created as opposed to what was lost,” he said.
“Legacy Trees can be a bridge from grief to growth.” Ms Osborn said it had appealed to the family that the trees allowed humans to leave no environmental footprint. “From my perspective, it’s just a no brainer in the fact that you’ve got this opportunity to virtually carbon-offset your existence on the

planet, add another couple of hundred trees and be a living memorial,” she said. “In terms of conservation of space and giving something back to the planet … and creating something beautiful out of something which is not so nice – losing your mum – it was the best possible option for us. Certainly for us, it reflects the family’s ethos.”

“Our family wanted to recognise Marian’s love for the environment and gardening,” he said. “The tree will have its own ecosystem and will help sustain local fauna, all under the big open skies of the west she loved so much.” Trust chief executive Jacqui Weatherill said that unlike untreated cremated remains, which were toxic to tree roots, Living Legacy Forest’s patented technology transformed cremated remains into micro-nutrients. “The process provides sustained energy to the tree for seven years,” she said. Also important to the Osborns is that other family members will have the option of having their treated cremated remains inserted into the area around the tree base. Marian’s youngest daughter, Elaine Osborn, said the family had stumbled across the option by chance. “From my perspective, the thing that I think both dad and I enjoyed about the thought of her becoming a tree … is that law of thermodynamics – that matter can’t be created or destroyed, it just transforms,” she said. “I think about the tree and I can almost picture her cellular level being taken up by the roots and travelling up the tree. “And being an environmental scientist, understanding how trees work, actually understanding that those nutrients flow through the lifeblood of the tree as a fact. “That’s what we were driving at with the whole poetic nature of it and especially because

Council have been actively and consistently working for more than a decade to create a community in which women are able to live free from violence. Substantial investment has taken place to improve gender equity and prevent violence against women, particularly within Council as an employer, and in formal and informal partnership with other councils and partner organisations. At the Ordinary Council Meeting on Tuesday 20 November, Council endorsed a draft Gender Equity Strategy to be released for public exhibition. I encourage all residents to read the draft strategy and have your say by visiting yourcityyourvoice.com.au.

As we turn our attention to the summer months, our festival city calendar is bursting at the seams with family friendly, alcohol-free events. Public decoration installations have commenced around the City, with the new addition of thousands of fairy lights being added to 19 large trees down the centre of Victoria Street in Seddon. Also new to the program this year will be three Family Festive Fairs on Saturday mornings throughout December which will turn our busy shopping precincts into Santa’s wonderland complete with Santa, his throne and elf helper, an elf choir, face painting and a craft activity.

Maribyrnong City Council’s Councillors have been busy. 1. Mayor Cr Martin Zakharov, alongside Abiola Ajetomobi Director at the Asylum Resource Centre, with representatives from other local councils attending the Mayoral Taskforce Supporting People Seeking Asylum Launch. 2. Cr Cuc Lam congratulating participants who graduated from the 2018 Daughters of the West program.
And of course the year would not be complete without the hugely popular New Year’s Eve fireworks in Footscray Park to cap off the year in style.

The fire that ripped through the Tottenham warehouse resulted in a severely damaged Stony Creek. It undid much of the decades of hard work put into the creek by Council, Friends of Stony Creek and Friends of Cruickshank Park and devastated the local environment of residents and wildlife.
Mayor Cr Martin Zakharov
Now Council has the somewhat unenviable responsibility of managing the clean-up (with the support of Melbourne Water and the EPA). While this could be seen as an unfair burden on Council, it can also be seen as an opportunity to ensure we get Stony Creek to a healthier state than it was before the fire, perhaps even to good health over the long term, and take the measures to prevent such a catastrophe from happening again.
COUNCIL MEETINGS Dec Tuesday 11, 6.30pm – Ordinary Council Meeting Meetings are held at the Maribyrnong Council Offices, corner Hyde and Napier Streets, Footscray. Agendas are available via Council’s website the Friday before a meeting at www.maribyrnong.vic.au/meetings
Unfortunately the clean-up cannot be achieved in just a few months and Council certainly doesn’t have the funds to cover it. We all need to work together to ensure the State Government, Melbourne Water and the EPA don’t forget about us and our creek! For more information about the progress of the clean-up visit Council’s website and support the effort however you can. Cr Simon Crawford Yarraville Ward

Seddon’s $20m evolution By Benjamin Millar Developers have lodged plans for a multi-storey apartment project to house almost 1000 people on the former Transdev bus depot in Seddon. The rezoned 1.4-hectare site at 43-57 Buckley Street was sold in 2015 to a developer for a record $20.9 million after the state government reportedly sold the block to Melbourne Bus Lines in 1998 for $2.8 million. Plans lodged with Maribyrnong council seek approval for the $120 million staged construction of three buildings up to 12 storeys in height – twice the site’s maximum preferred building height of six storeys. The proposal includes 407 apartments, 15
three-bedroom townhouses and ground floor retail. The 422 dwellings are estimated to be likely to house about 970 people, increasing Seddon’s population by almost 20 per cent. The site is next to Victoria University and bounded by Buckley, Walter, Arran and Albert streets. Plans for the site include a 1700-square-metre open space with playground on the south-western corner. Earlier plans for a major supermarket on the site have been scrapped and replaced by a number of smaller retail tenancies. The proposal seeks to reduce to zero the number of carparking spaces required for
residential visitors and non-staff retail use. It does not include any affordable housing, pointing instead to the creation of additional public open space. A social impact assessment prepared by ASR Research states the development will generate revenues in excess of $1 million a year to Maribyrnong council and the local community, based on rate revenue and project development contributions. “The proposed development will create an important new public realm node and important new linkages in the north-east portion of Seddon and provide enhanced access and amenity to and from the Footscray Metropolitan Activity Centre,” it states.
A coronial investigation is under way into a massive inferno that blazed for days in Melbourne’s inner west. Coroner Darren Bracken has instructed Victoria Police to compile a brief into the suspicious fire that destroyed a factory in Tottenham on August 30. Coroners are permitted to investigate certain fires, even when the fire did not result in the death of a person. Star Weekly last week reported warnings by authorities that the fire was so fierce investigations may never be able to determine exactly what chemicals were being stored at the site. Victoria Police arson and explosive squad detectives have been investigating the fire since it was flagged as suspicious by the Metropolitan Fire Brigade. The 14,000-square-metre fire was fuelled by a range of illegally stored chemicals, spewing a toxic smoke plume across Melbourne’s western suburbs and heavily contaminating nearby Stony Creek and parkland. WorkSafe has confirmed the site was not registered for the storage of dangerous goods. A WorkSafe and EPA blitz in the fire’s aftermath on 110 industrial sites in the surrounding area identified 74 contraventions relating to the handling and storage of dangerous goods. Coroner Darren Bracken, a former barrister and police detective, confirmed on Tuesday he was investigating the fire following requests from the MFB and the United Firefighters Union. He said he had determined that it was in the public interest to investigate. The investigation will focus on determining the cause and origin of the fire and the circumstances in which it occurred. The coroner has powers to make recommendations to address systemic issues identified during the investigation. Work is continuing on the removal of contaminated silt from Stony Creek. Benjamin Millar

Burger shop knocked back
By Benjamin Millar Footscray MP Katie Hall has vowed to fight for the heritage protection of The Reverence Hotel after the Footscray live music venue’s operators announced they were pulling down the curtain. Matt and Melanie Bodiam are calling last drinks after six-and-a-half years, announcing they will shut the pub in early March after failing to secure a new lease. Mr Bodiam told Star Weekly the decision was difficult, but their hands were forced after operating on a month-to-month basis since their lease ran out six months ago.

“potential to build to up to six levels”. The pub has an asking price of $3.5 to $4 million, putting it out of the reach of most hotel operators. Advanced Hospitality Brokers agent Mark Durnan said the owners were in no rush to sell, but were no longer willing to continue leasing the property without substantially increasing the rent. The property is listed on the Heritage Council database due to its archaeological significance.
NOTICE OF AN APPLICATION FOR PLANNING PERMIT
Ms Hall said she had contacted Maribyrnong council and the Footscray Historical Society to ensure the hotel had adequate heritage protection against demolition. “I’m deeply concerned about the loss of heritage fabric in Footscray,” she said. “I do have an interest in both live music and heritage. I think The Reverence has made an important cultural contribution in our community as well.” 12370889-CG45-17
Mr Bodiam, who grew up in Footscray, said pubs were a nightmare to maintain and the couple could no longer justify sinking money into the property when they could be kicked out with no more than a month’s notice. “We are not overly rapt about the whole situation,” he said. “There is no certainty – this is our home and we have a young son who needs close to 24-hour care and he starts school next year.” He said he would love to be able to take the venue’s operations and popular following to a new hotel, but set-up costs were too high. Star Weekly last year reported that the hotel’s owners had put the site on the market and were pitching it at developers. An online listing described the property, built in 1876 and formerly known as The Exchange, as a “fantastic freehold development” with
Plans to put a 24-hour burger joint next to neighbourhood houses in Seabrook have been knocked back by the state’s planning tribunal. Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal rejected Jasbe Point Cook’s appeal to build a fast food outlet at 144e-144f Point Cook Road. The proposed outlet would have traded around the clock as Carl’s Junior Burger restaurant and drive-through. In their ruling remarks, VCAT presiding member Alison Glynn and member Philip West stated the restaurant would negatively impact homes backing on to the northern and western boundaries of the site. “A number of residents of these houses oppose the proposal as does the Hobsons Bay City Council, who issued a notice of refusal to grant a planning permit for the proposal,” they stated. “We consider that the operation of the fast food outlet will increase the number of and intensity of noisy events from raised voices, car horns, music from vehicles and general disruption due to poor vehicle circulation within the site and the location of the drive through function directly adjacent to the acoustic barrier near the residential properties.” They said there were also concerns about traffic, light spill, building layout and general amenity impacts. In 2005, VCAT rejected similar plans for the site by the same applicant. Goya Dmytryshchak

MPs land cabinet roles
Cumming on target for seat
By Goya Dmytryshchak Altona MP Jill Hennessy has been appointed Labor’s first female attorney-general, while rookie Williamstown MP Melissa Horne has gone straight to the frontbench. Premier Daniel Andrews on Thursday announced his new cabinet, which will be 50 per cent women. Ms Hennessy, who has also been made Workplace Safety Minister, will oversee as attorney general the implementation of tougher bail laws.

and responsibility with great gusto, with a deep sense of responsibility and a very strong sense of humility.” Ms Hennessy paid tribute to retired Liberal MP Jan Wade, who became Victoria’s first female attorney-general in 1992.
“I hope my daughters grow up not thinking that 50 per cent cabinet female membership is a novelty or that a female attorney-general is a novelty,” Ms Hennessy said. “I hope it becomes the norm … I look forward to the day where it’s not a thing.”
Maribyrnong councillor Catherine Cumming is on track to enter state Parliament as the fifth and final upper house representative for Melbourne’s western suburbs. Star Weekly revealed in February that Cr Cumming would be ending her 20-year run as an independent to take a tilt at state Parliament as a candidate for Derryn Hinch’s Justice Party. With 50 per cent of the vote rechecked by Tuesday, Ms Cumming had picked up 7 per cent, behind Labor, the Liberal party and the Greens. Labor’s Cesar Melhem, Ingrid Stitt and Kaushaliya Vaghela have secured three seats and the Liberal party’s Bernie Finn will be safely returned. Huong Truong of the Greens is likely to lose her place as preference flows from micro-parties help Cr Cumming over the line. “I’m still so excited, I just can’t wait to represent the west and fight for the area on state issues in the Parliament,” Cr Cumming said. “I will be making [Labor] stand by their promises and not somehow do a backflip on them.” Cr Cumming will also push for drug law reform and more measures to tackle problems associated with the use of ice. Once her election is confirmed she will resign as a councillor, triggering a countback of votes from the 2016 council election to elect her replacement. Benjamin Millar

Ms Horne has been appointed Minister for Public Transport and Ports and Freight. She is only the second woman, after Joan Kirner, to be elected in the seat of Williamstown and was previously a director with the Level Crossing Removal Authority. She replaces Wade Noonan, who retired from politics after 11 years. Ms Hennessy thanked her predecessor, Martin Pakula, who she worked with to develop the voluntary assisted dying legislation. “Being an attorney-general is a great honour and it’s a particular honour to be the 54th attorney-general in this state,” she said. “Those of us who have been lawyers in our past lives, before politics, also understand how important this role is – from law reform to judicial appointments, but also to making sure our Parliament is putting through the sorts of legislative changes that our community expect. And I look forward to stepping up into the role

Man pleads guilty to fatal fire By Adam Cooper, The Age
To the moon and back A lifelike sculpture of the moon has landed at Scienceworks alongside a lunar virtual reality experience opening next week. Museum of the Moon by UK artist Luke Jerram is a seven-metre luminous spherical sculpture with each centimetre representing five kilometres of actual moon surface. It was created using high-resolution NASA imagery. It will accompany the Earthlight: Lunar Hub experience which has been described as a cross between gaming and space exploration. Melbourne-based outfit Opaque Space, which worked with NASA on astronaut-training, created the simulated space environment where six players walk on the moon. It’s the first time the 40-minute experience, which involves moving about with gaming headsets and backpack PCs, has been available to the public. Scienceworks general manager Jonathan Shearer said the experience took virtual reality to a new level. “The graphics are so realistic, I felt like I was really walking on the moon,” he said. “Visitors are going to be awestruck by this experience.” Museum of the Moon and Earthlight: Lunar Hub opened on December 1 at Scienceworks, 2 Booker Street, Spotswood.

It was supposed to be a safe place. The chain on the door of an alcove on the old Kinnears rope factory in Footscray meant the door could only be opened from the inside. For David Griffiths and Tanya Burmeister, who secured the chain nightly, the alcove meant they didn’t have to spend nights in Melbourne’s CBD, where they begged during their days. But Darren Patrick Clover also knew the chain meant the door couldn’t be opened from outside, and driven by a jealous rage towards his former partner and new boyfriend and $2 of petrol, lit a fire outside about 11.25pm on March 1 last year. Mr Griffiths, 39, Ms Burmeister, 32, and her 15-year-old daughter Zoe were trapped by the fire and died despite the efforts of passers-by. Clover, 53, regularly threatened and abused Ms Burmeister and Mr Griffiths in the months before the fire and, the Supreme Court heard last Wednesday, told an associate: “I am going to set the squats on fire”. Clover, who lived in Delahey, had an on-off relationshipwith Ms Burmeister, prosecutor Ray Gibson said, but claimed he loved her. But his animosity increased from about two weeks before the fire, when it became clear the relationship was over for good, Mr Gibson said. Clover initially claimed to police he left the petrol outside the door for a barbecue and dismissed the allegation he knew people were inside. He later pleaded guilty to three counts of murder. On Wednesday his lawyer said Clover didn’t know Zoe was inside. Defence counsel Daniel Gurvich, QC, argued his client lit the fire without the intention to kill. Justice Jane Dixon will sentence Clover at a later date.

Drug driver to stay in jail By Adam Cooper/The Age An Altona Meadows learner driver who used the drug ice hours before he hit a man in a wheelchair at 50km/h, and didn’t stop, has failed in an attempt at an early release from prison. Jake Pedersen, 23, was driving in a rented car on October 30 when at 1.15pm he collided with Judeland Antony, who was crossing Bourke Street in the Docklands in his wheelchair. Mr Pedersen slowed momentarily but did not stop and drove to La Trobe Street, where he parked the car and fled after being confronted by a witness who had followed him, Melbourne Magistrates Court heard on Thursday. Mr Pedersen handed himself in to police six days later and admitted using ice in the days before the crash, including 12 hours prior, Senior Constable Kylie Dowling told the court. He told police he panicked because he knew he should not have been driving and had fraudulently hired the car in another man’s name, Senior Constable Dowling said. Mr Antony, 33, suffered fractures to his spine, pelvis and left hand. He crossed the road at a spot where pedestrians were obliged to give way to the traffic, the police prosecutor said. Mr Pedersen appeared before the court via video link and asked through his lawyer for a sentence indication if he pleaded guilty, having served more than three weeks in jail since his arrest. Defence counsel Mihal Greener asked that time served plus a community corrections order be imposed if her client pleaded guilty to failing to stop, failing to render assistance, using a false document and other charges. But magistrate Letizia Torres ruled the offending was too serious and said she would jail Mr Pedersen for two months and impose

a community corrections order if he pleaded guilty. Ms Greener said she wouldn’t accept the indication and asked that Mr Pedersen’s case be adjourned, though he is expected to apply for bail next week. He is yet to enter a plea.

The Altona Meadows man had never been in custody before, his lawyer said, and used drugs to cope with a “troubled past” including the deaths of both parents by the time he was 16. He was remorseful for hitting Mr Antony, the court heard, and told police he hadn’t known what he collided with and fled in panic.
Police are hunting for a man they believe has held up at least four stores at gunpoint in Maribyrnong and Braybrook. In the latest incident, a man entered a service station on Williamsons Road, Maribyrnong, about 10.15pm on November 27, pulling out a gun and demanding cash before escaping on a bicycle. Investigators believe the same man robbed a restaurant on Ashley Street, Braybrook, about 8.40pm on November 24, drawing a gun and threatening staff before stealing cash and fleeing on a bicycle. Acting Sergeant Alistair Parsons said police suspected the two incidents were related to two earlier armed robberies in Maribyrnong. Detectives have released CCTV images of a man they believe can assist with their inquiries. The man is described as Caucasian, between 20 and 30 years old, and about 170-180 centimetres tall. West safe as houses By Benjamin Millar Maribyrnong properties have been defying Melbourne’s downward real estate trend, racking up record results at auction. A four-bedroom house achieved the city’s third highest auction result recently, the hammer coming down on the riverfront home Grandview for $4.14 million. On 1890 square metres at 96 The Esplanade, Grandview had been listed with a price guide of $3.6 million to $3.95 million. The sale shattered the strip’s previous record result of $3.4 million. It was one of 1137 auctions held that weekend, with a clearance rate of 44 per cent – well below the 66 per cent rate from 1736 auctions on the same weekend last year. The result came a week after a “renovator’s delight” was sold in Footscray for $1.5 million – $438,000 above the property’s reserve price. The three-bedroom house is on a 560 square metre corner property at 35 Nicholson Street. The results buck the sluggish trend in Melbourne, where house prices are tipped to fall next year, before rising again in 2020. Domain’s Property Price Forecasts report, released last week, projects house prices to reset to late 2016 levels by the middle of next year, with a median of just above $800,000. Prices are then expected to climb again. Domain economist Trent Wiltshire said the softening in the Melbourne property market can be attributed to a regulatory crackdown on bank lending, a downturn in foreign investment and a nosedive in buyer sentiment. Mr Wiltshire said a market recovery remains likely, with strong property fundamentals still in place such as low interest rates, low unemployment and migration.

Rare Newport block up for grabs By Goya Dmytryshchak A “dream” block of land in Newport is expected to be listed for sale in January. The 467 square metre lot at 99 Woods Street has price expectations of nearly $1 million. The $920,000-$980,000 price guide isn’t far off last quarter’s $1.08 million median house price for the suburb, according to Real Estate Institute of Victoria figures. The block was last week listed for sale by Sweeney Estate Agents who advertised it as
“the rarest of the rare”. However, Sweeney Williamstown director Dean Stanley said the owner of the 467 square metre block had decided to delay the auction until February. The vacant lot is owned by the adjoining New Leaf Cafe, which no longer needs it for a car park. “To have something that’s ready to go where you don’t have to demolish and you can just get in there and start, it is definitely something that’s not au fait with Newport,” Mr Stanley said.
‘‘
It’s rare to have something you can just buy - Dean Stanley and start
’’
“Usually, you have to get in, do demolition and do all that, so it is very rare to have something that you can just buy and start straight away.” Sweeney’s advertisement stated the land presented a “major opportunity to reap
ongoing investment returns” or “a unique stake in Newport’s outstanding family future”. “The rarest of rare opportunities, this vacant allotment of some 467m2 represents a superb strategic stake in the future of Newport’s most appealing, family focused pocket close to early childhood services, schools, parks and Challis Street shops,” it stated. “Discovering a block that delivers dimensions of such breadth, depth and potential anywhere in Newport would be a dream.”
Gut instinct pays off They may have had a gut feeling they would win. Two brothers behind Soulfresh’s Lo Bros kombucha cola have been recognised in the Australian Organic Awards for Excellence. Didi and Hsiao Lo’s fermented cola, packed with probiotic bacteria good for gut health, was named best new certified organic product at the awards in Canberra last week. The brothers started out in Footscray and now export around the world from their Laverton North plant. Didi said their cola was based on an 1878 recipe and was naturally low in sugar. It uses tea from the Yarra Valley brewed with springwater from Daylesford. Then they add scoby – a living culture that is a symbiotic colony of bacteria and yeast. “When we started growing kombucha, what we soon realised is there’s just this wonderful chemistry that occurs,” Didi said. “At the end of about 30 days’ worth of fermentation, you
end up with a product which is naturally low in sugar and has these wonderful flavours with a beautiful tanginess and is obviously very beneficial because it has all the probiotics in there. “You get all these wonderful things that aid digestion; it really helps to promote gut health … so many health issues are now being linked to poor diet and poor gut. “A healthy gut is a key to happiness – five times more seretonin is produced in your stomach than is produced in your brain.” The awards were hosted by not-for-profit peak industry group Australian Organic. Push to boost tourism in the west By Charlene Macaulay Enhancing parks and gardens, activating the bay and supporting the development of key visitor attractions are the hallmarks of a Western Melbourne Tourism plan to boost tourism in the west by 21 per cent over the next decade. The regional tourism board, which launched its Melbourne’s West Destination Management
Visitor plan, aims to attract 4.3 million visitors to the west by the 2026-27 financial year and boost overnight stays by 90 per cent to 12.4 million stays. Brimbank, Hobsons Bay, Melton, Wyndham and Moonee Valley attracted 3.6 million visitors over 2017-18, with 76 per cent making day trips and 20 per cent staying overnight. The west’s tourism economy currently brings in $1.45 billion.
Visiting parks and gardens was the top must-do attraction (45 per cent) as identified in a visitor survey, followed by shopping (24 per cent), art, museums and cultural attractions (23 per cent) and restaurants and cafes (22 per cent). Western Melbourne Tourism executive officer Richard Ponsford said enhancing the west’s natural assets – including parks, gardens, the bay coastline and industrial precincts like
the Newport rail yards – was a key part of the plan. Mr Ponsford said it was also important to boost accommodation options in the region, with the west having above-average rates of visitors coming in for day trips and not staying overnight. He said the new Airport rail link and international flights in and out of Avalon Airport would be game changers for tourism in the west.

One of the state’s leading supporters of women experiencing family violence has chalked up 30 years of service. Women’s Health West launched in Footscray in 1988 to provide clinical healthcare and information to women. It has since evolved into one of Victoria’s only organisations providing services and programs targeting every level of family violence, from prevention to early intervention and response, with support at every step. Past and present staff and supporters gathered at Footscray Community Arts Centre last Wednesday to celebrate the 30th anniversary. Dr Robyn Gregory, chief executive of Women’s Health West since 2005, said the organisation had grown from a committee of 11 women to one that employs more than 100 people. Dr Gregory said the service was more important than ever, experiencing one of its busiest years in the past 12 months. “We received over 10,000 police family

Bulldogs kick on to a big profit By Benjamin Millar The financial future of the Western Bulldogs is looking rosy after the club posted a record profit of more than $18 million. The club’s 2018 financial report, released last week, shows public land gifted to the club and grants for the upgrade of Whitten Oval facilities have taken the club’s net assets to almost $46 million, putting the Western Bulldogs among the wealthiest clubs in the AFL. Almost $16 million profit was recorded from one-off “redevelopment activities”, but a further $2.2 million profit was recorded through other
channels. The report confirmed the club’s commitment to selling off its remaining pokies entitlements, despite its machines taking $1.6 million in profit in the year to October 31. The Western Bulldogs 2017 profit was $1.6 million. “The club’s strategy is to leverage the redevelopment of the Western Oval precinct to create commercial opportunities which complement the healthy and community oriented use of our home ground,” the report states. Western Bulldogs chief executive Ameet Bains said the healthy result was achieved

’’
despite a reduction in competitive balance funding from the AFL. “It also came after an unprecedented increase in revenue from the commercial partnerships arm of the organisation, which achieved revenue in excess of $12 million for the first time,” he said. “While we saw an overall loss in membership numbers last season, we are
encouraged by significant increases in AFLW and Ballarat membership categories … which helped drive overall membership revenue to $7.59 million.” Mr Bains said the club was proud to continue investing in community programs such as Sons of the West and Daughters of the West. He said the Bulldogs’ board and executive were planning the club’s exit from gaming machine ownership and hatching ambitious plans for the redevelopment of Whitten Oval and the broader Whitten Oval precinct, what he described as “one of the most exciting projects in the club’s history”.
River wall bridges a gap A Footscray project has residents of all ages climbing the walls. A four-metre climbing wall and exercise equipment are part of a new plaza that has been installed beneath the Hopkins Street Bridge, alongside the Maribyrnong River. The climbing wall, designed in collaboration with the Victorian Climbing Club, includes a number of coloured routes that provide varying degrees of difficulty, making it suitable for beginners and experienced climbers alike. The idea for the place emerged from community consultation undertaken as part of the Footscray River Edge Masterplan, a series of projects aimed to encourage people to make more use of areas alongside Maribyrnong River. Maribyrnong mayor Martin Zakharov, who tried his hand at climbing the new wall last
week, said the initiative was a great example of the community having a positive planning impact. “The new recreational plaza will be a staple this summer for people of all ages utilising the Maribyrnong River Trail,” he said. Benjamin Millar

Worker wins 890k payout for fall By Alesha Capone A man who was injured after falling down stairs at a Laverton North factory has been awarded $890,000 in damages by the Supreme Court. In November 2011, the man, who was in his mid-30s, was working as a labourer at a concrete pipe manufacturing plant operated by Holcim (Australia), when he slipped three steps from a landing and fell onto the concrete factory floor.
At the time, the man was employed through the labour hire firm Ready Workforce. The court heard the man had brought legal action alleging negligence by Holcim and Ready Workforce, and a breach of duty by Holcim. Supreme Court Judge Andrew Keogh said that the man’s evidence described the landing’s surface as being wet and covered in debris from the factory’s manufacturing process, when he fell and landed mainly on his right lower back, leg and shoulder. The court hard that the injured man was
afterwards diagnosed with a partial tear to his right Achilles tendon, chronic low back pain caused by aggravation of pre-existing degenerative changes, a right shoulder injury, a soft tissue injury to his right hip and chronic pain syndrome. Justice Keogh said this had caused ongoing pain and difficulty when trying to lift heavy weights or reach high cupboards. The court heard the man also suffered nightmares and flashbacks of his fall, and he felt “embarrassment and shame” for not working
and had been diagnosed with depression. Justice Keogh said it was likely that the worker would continue to suffer symptoms from each of his conditions “indefinitely” into the future. “The injuries have caused incapacity for employment and a substantial inference to … enjoyment of life,” Justice Keogh said. He awarded the worker damages of $220,000 for pain and suffering, $315,000 for past loss of earnings and $355,000 for future loss of earning capacity, adding up to $890,000 in total.
Film night in the frame Melbourne’s longest-running short-film night is hosting a 10-year reunion and inviting directors previously featured to a special screening in Williamstown. West Side Shorts, presented by Angry Productions, is a film night held at Customs House Hotel on the second Tuesday of the month. Founder and award-winning Newport filmmaker Tom Vogel said many of the directors featured had gone on to achieve major success. Of the thousands of short films he has watched, Vogel plans to show seven of the best on the night. “I’m trying to get in touch with Matthew Saville at the moment because I want to play his short film, Sweetheart, which played there years ago,” he said. “Matthew directed The King, which is the television biography of Graham Kennedy. “We’ll be screening Nash Edgerton’s film
called Bear – his brother is Joel Edgerton who’s in a lot of Hollywood movies at the moment. “The film stars Teresa Palmer who was in Hacksaw Ridge and Wolf Creek; Warwick Thornton, the director of Samson and Delilah and Sweet Country, also stars. “On top of that, James Di Martino is going to be hosting the night and he’s just completed his first feature film, which is called The Faceless Man. We’ll be showing a trailer of that at the end of the night and doing a Q and A with him and the DOP [director of photography].” Members of the public are invited to come along. West Side Shorts celebrates 10 years on December 11 from 8pm. Entry is free for previously screened directors and $7 for others. Goya Dmytryshchak West Side Shorts founder and filmmaker Tom Vogel. MY PLACE Williamstown’s Ralph Coghill is passionate about restoring historic buildings at the Truganina Explosives Reserve in Altona. He speaks with Goya Dmytryshchak. What’s your connection to Hobsons Bay? I live in Williamstown. I’ve lived here for 17 years, moved here from country New South Wales – Albury. What do you like about Williamstown? Well, in fact, the thing I like most about Williamstown, apart from being such a great suburb so close to the centre of the city, is its relative isolation from the suburban sprawl. Being on a peninsula, there are no through roads to anywhere and, more importantly, it actually reminds me a lot of Albury – the beautiful tree-lined streets and the old heritage houses. I enjoy walking around the foreshore … I particularly enjoy that. What don’t you like?
What’s your favourite restaurant or cafe? I tend to eat at home most times and if I go out for a meal or a coffee, I tend to spread it around the local businesses; I don’t have a favourite. Can you tell me about your volunteering? I do volunteering work at the Truganina
(Damjan Janevski)
I don’t think there’s a lot to be improved, I think it’s a great suburb. I just think it’s a suburb that works particularly well. I’m a little bit concerned about the increased residential density. There’s a tendency towards increased high-rise that’s only going to put increased pressure on roads and services. Explosives Reserve, part of a group of volunteers doing restoration work on the historic buildings. That’s done jointly with the Truganina Explosives Reserve Preservation Society, of which I am the treasurer, and the Hobsons Bay Men’s Shed. So, I’m also a men’s shed member and I do a bit of work there from time to time as well.

Can you tell me about the Truganina Explosives Reserve? It’s a truly unique place. It was the state government site for the storage and distribution of explosives for commercial use between 1901 and 1962. The explosives weren’t made there – they were made at Deer Park and they were
brought to the reserve at Altona for storage and distribution. Because the explosives were made exclusively in Victoria, the Victorian government had the responsibility of distributing these materials all around Australia to all states and across the Tasman to New Zealand and to the Pacific Islands. So, it wasn’t just a statewide activity – it was more than that, but the Victorian government had control of it. There are a number of historic buildings – a manager’s house and some outbuildings – and since 2015 a group of volunteers have been involved in restoring the manager’s house and some of the outbuildings. My involvement came about as a result of National Trust membership. The National Trust has an involvement with the council’s committee of management for the explosives reserve and my wife and I were invited to go onto that committee of management as representatives of the National Trust. It was actually my wife, Virginia, who set up the team of volunteers and got them started, and jointly we now co-ordinate that activity. What’s something people would be surprised to know about you? The skills I bring to the restoration work are self-taught. My professional background was in industrial chemistry and then later management. So, I don’t have manual or trade skills, I didn’t work in that industry. I’ve learnt on the job and I’m having a lot of fun doing it because it’s a whole new career path for me. Even though I’m retired, I still regard what I do now as part of my career.

FOOD REVIEW STARWEEKLY.COM.AU
CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir finds a restaurant staking its claim in Sunshine DaLat Hill Sunshine has a Vietnamese name, but there’s no rice paper rolls or pho here. Instead, they are going their own sweet way, developing a niche based around steak, along with regular cafe fare. Here you can get T-bone, ribeye, scotch fillet and the like at fair prices. But the place’s big drawcard, one designed to get new customers through the door yet also remain an always available “special”, is the Special Rump Steak for $10. We are a little surprised to be asked how we want our meat cooked, as we figure the $10 steak will be of the ultra-thin variety sometimes served as part of Vietnamese steak-and-eggs and for which precise cooking instructions are pretty much irrelevant. So … medium rare for us both. How good can a $10 steak be? The answer, at DaLat Hill Sunshine, is … just fine. Sure, you’ll not be chowing down here on prime, big-bucks beef, but our steaks are enjoyable nonetheless. And they’re nicely sized for our Saturday lunch, steak not normally being something we would otherwise ever consider ordering for anything other than an evening meal. And then, only very rarely. But what makes our meals more than just adequately satisfying – and propels them into realms of bargain pleasure – is the care taken with the accompaniments and the presentation. The mashed potato is very, very good.
DALAT HILL SUNSHINE Address: Sunshine Plaza, 324 Hampshire Road, Sunshine Phone: 9042 5338 The asparagus spears are both cooked through and crisp. The thin gravy is fine for meat dipping. And even the rosemary garnish does its part by imbuing all with just the right amount of perfume. The service is fine and smiling – as are the Vietnamese iced coffees with which we depart. PETER HITCHENER CHANNEL NINE NEWS PRESENTER
with Sarah Patterson
FB: How would you rate yourself as a cook? PH: Here’s the thing. I’m no great foodie. I’m not a collector of fine restaurants and fine wines and fine dining experiences. My last regular cooking I suppose happened many decades ago. I seemed to have more time them. I used to cook – we’re talking here back in the late ’60s and ’70s when food was different. You could add dollops of cream and this and that and the other and somehow it didn’t go to the waist. I don’t know how that was! I’m thinking back to a time when sweet wines were the go. Switzerland’s little gift to the world was of course the fondue … did you ever have those strands of hot cheese going down the chin while everyone’s digging in with their forks? That’s when I stopped cooking actually. FB: What is your favourite food? PH: I like Japanese food. It seems very simple and fresh. FB: What do you like to drink? PH: These days I rarely will have an (alcoholic) drink. Very rarely indeed because – I don’t know – I’m too busy.
As always, if you have any recipes, tips or other info you’d like to share, email me at sarah@ howdypartnersmedia.com.au
FB: Are you a coffee drinker? PH: Oh yes! Once upon a time there was Bushell’s coffee with chicory essence. We’re talking the ’50s here. We’re talking about when Arnott’s SAO biscuits came in big tins! These days of course, you can have soyacino, moccacino, skinny cinos, latte … chai … something chai … you’ve got to have chai every now and again. Remember the thermos? I’d take a thermos of instant coffee with me into the studio every night and sip at it during the news. Wherever it comes from, I’m happy with that. I also like a cup of tea, too. Without sugar. Without milk. Russian Caravan Tea is my favourite. FB: Have you got a sweet tooth? PH: Yes. I keep getting lectures at the gym and from the doctor (about sugar). Give me one of those ice creams at the McDrive Thru will you? And hurry up about it!
As always, if you have any recipes, tips or other info you’d like to share, email me at sarah@howdypartnersmedia.com.au
FB: Which five people would you most like to invite to dinner? PH: Tony Jones (Channel Nine colleague), Denis Walter and their wives (both named Annette), Livvo (Livinia Nixon), Brett McLeod, Alicia Loxley … people I work with. We all feel like family anyway, so that would actually be a nice extended family meal.
BURIED TREASURE
I’m sure many of us – as children – remember the excitement of being on the receiving end of a birthday cake from the Women’s Weekly Cookbook. Back in the ’70s, I remember the Dolly Varden cake being a regular staple of birthday celebrations for little girls … a Barbie or Cindy doll speared feet-first into a pudding-shaped cake which – with a bit of icing, silver cacous and a pinch of imagination – then became the doll’s skirt. My personal favourite, though, was the treasure chest – a rectangular box-shaped cake slathered in chocolate frosting (swirled with a fork to give it the look and texture of wood) and overflowing with lollies and coins. All my life I have wanted an excuse to make one, and the other day I did, for a dear friend of mine who loves the childhood memories these kinds of cakes evoke. Who knew Curly Wurly chocolate bars could double so well as leather straps? It was so much fun to do, and gratefully received. Have you made any cakes from the Women’s Weekly Birthday Cake Cookbook? I’d love to see them. You can now also follow Food Bytes With Sarah Patterson on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

Gunn&Co Estate Agents: 9397 5555 Auction: December 22 at 12.30pm
This stunning landmark residence with beach frontage is replete with art deco features, foremost among them the grand timber-panelled foyer, ornate plasterwork and an exquisite stained-glass window on the way upstairs. As well as one bedroom with a fireplace downstairs, there are three bedrooms up top, as well as a chic dual-basin bathroom and separate toilet. The large main up here has an en suite and there’s a terrace taking in sea views. Living areas include gracious and gorgeous sitting and family rooms, each with fireplace. A study has french doors to a courtyard. The sleek kitchen has loads of storage, stone benches, glass splashbacks, walk-in pantry and all mod-cons. Included amid the luxe are hydronic heating and remote-controlled double garage. Private schools, train station, shopping precinct, marina and botanical gardens are all within easy reach.
This modern townhouse combines a well-designed, flowing floor plan with contemporary stylings and the results are impressive. Polished timber floorboards are complemented by a timber staircase that contrasts nicely with smart black railings and partial walls. Large windows throughout allow in plenty of light. Living space includes a lounge room on entry and an open meals and living zone near the kitchen. The kitchen has stone benchtops, a Smeg oven and a walk-in pantry. One bedroom with built-in robes and an en suite is on the ground floor. Upstairs are two further bedrooms with built-in robes and the main with walk-in robe and en suite. An alfresco area provides a great space for entertaining and a studio (with bathroom) is a handy addition above the double garage. Other inclusions are heating, refrigerated cooling, intercom and double-glazed windows.

Beautifully presented both inside and out, this fully rebuilt Edwardian gem offers ideal family living. Polished floorboards look great in the main areas, nicely complemented by the timber features and high ceilings found throughout. The house has four bedrooms with built-in robes, the main with walk-in robe and en suite. Two bedrooms are upstairs, along with a study area and one of the three bathrooms. The kitchen is striking, its dark granite benchtops contrasting with timber cabinetry and stainless-steel appliances. It overlooks the large open-plan living hub that incorporates dining and living zones. Further back, the large lounge room features a wood fire; bi-fold doors open to the neat backyard, where there’s a garage and workshop. Close to the bay, shops, parks and cafes, this is worth a look.
On about 420 square metres and in a prime location within an amble of The Strand waterfront, train station, shops, cafes and schools, this residence is a shell on the inside – rosettes and gorgeous leadlight window transoms remain. The once-lovely old dame presents a fine challenge for renovators looking to create a dream home, while the block will attract developer attention. The layout includes three bedrooms, a bathroom, a laundry with toilet and open-plan kitchen, dining and living areas. With its sought-after location and period façade, the house richly deserves a new life and pride of place in Newport. There’s a secure garage and off-street parking for two more vehicles.

NEWPORT 38 North Road, 3015 Williams Real Estate: 9397 2000
Price: $1.9 million – $1.95 million
This house, built in the year the First World War began, was crafted by the original owner – a cabinet-maker by trade. It’s remained in the same family for all that time – 104 years. The wonderful abode oozes history and a passion for craftsmanship; even the quirky outbuildings on the block of 1000-plus square metres tell a rich story. The square-set cornices on high ceilings all through speak of the no-nonsense approach of that earlier generation, yet beauty abounds in the leadlight front door and window transoms, the ceiling roses and fretwork. Doors have a rich walnut burl and

decorative handles, while deep skirts and architraves are dark-stained. That eye for beauty is again seen in the spacious lounge room, where picture rails are ornately carved, and in one of the three bedrooms (along the wide entry hall) where a hand-crafted surround frames a cast-iron fireplace. Also along the hallway is the bathroom, with a large modern shower and the look of a late 1950s revamp. That’s the same era a tapestry-brick surround was added in the lounge room; it now frames an old-school gas heater. Adjoining a spacious vestibule/lobby with
built-in cabinetry and original stained-glass window, the kitchen evokes chats with grandma over scones and cuppa. It has a gas cooktop set in the original chimney breast, a wall oven and plenty of storage. A dining room, with built-in cabinetry, neighbours the lobby and could serve as a fourth bedroom. Those aforementioned outbuildings, made by a man with a practical turn of mind and the ability to create lots from little, include a laundry, toilet and two-room powered workshop. Equally sturdily made are a chook house and a potting shed/greenhouse.

A side gate provides access past pretty gardens to a steel shed. The gardens include a bed of hollyhocks, roses, lilacs and numerous cottage plantings, with brick pathways meandering among them. An apple tree with gnarly trunk provides summer shade near the house, and apricot, plum and citrus trees are dotted around. Down the back is a vegie garden with numerous planting boxes. The Strand waterfront is just down the road and shops, cafes and schools are all within easy reach. Carole Levy

Looking to buy a new home? Start saving now Young Melburnians looking to buy their first home in the city’s cheapest suburbs will likely spend at least five years saving for a deposit, a new report shows. Domain Group analysed entry-level house prices in the city’s most affordable areas, and estimated the amount of time required to save a 20 per cent deposit, using average wage data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics. A dual-income couple aged between 25 and 34, who were each saving one-fifth of their post-tax income, would need to save for six years to come up with a $116,500 deposit for a property priced at $582,500, the report found. The city’s cheapest local government area to buy a house was Melton, which takes in Caroline Springs, Toolern Vale and new suburb estates such as Rockbank and Fraser Rise. An entry-level house costs about $424,000, and the report estimated a couple would spend four years and three months saving the $84,800 required for a deposit. Couples looking to buy in the western growth corridor of Wyndham, where affordable houses cost about $490,000, would need to put away money for five years. And in Casey, Frankston, Whittlesea, Brimbank and Greater Dandenong, it would take closer to six years. Entry-level property prices were calculated based on the 25th percentile of recent sales data. The most affordable place within 10 kilometres of the city was Maribyrnong,

where property hunters face 7½ years of saving to buy a $752,000 house, or 3½ years to buy a $360,000 apartment. At the other end of the scale, it would take the average couple 16 years to save a deposit for a $1.6 million house in
Boroondara. Domain data scientist Nicola Powell said the time required to save a deposit for the average entry-level property in Melbourne had ballooned by eight months in the past year.
From July 1, buyers will be able to access funds from their superannuation to put towards a deposit on a first home. This is an edited version of a story by Allison Worrall from Domain.com.au

55 MARIBYRNONG & HOBSONS BAY STAR WEEKLY \ DECEMBER 5, 2018
SPORT Redpath joins the Lions’ den The Lions will undoubtedly urge Redpath to move forth cautiously, however Bullen will trust him to manage his training schedule. “Jack knows his body,” Bullen said. “He was in the Bulldogs’ leadership team, so knows what to do and when to do it.” Redpath will be the focal point of a starstudded forward line. If Redpath can click with mainstay Jase Perkins, who kicked 68 goals last campaign, and James Wong, another proven goalkicker, it will be a nightmare for opposition defenders. “They will form a pretty formidable combination,” Bullen said. “Hopefully they can share the goalscoring load between them. “There will be an abundance of marking power down there.” Even though Redpath has proven himself at the top level with the Bulldogs and dominated locally with Kyneton in the Bendigo Football League, going to the six-time reigning premiers Deer Park will have a new set of pressures.
“If anything, he’s a bit nervous coming into the football because he knows how successful we’ve been,” Bullen said. “He wants to make sure that he impacts, which I’m sure he will.” Redpath is not the only big name to arrive at Deer Park. Daniel Harris, who played 160 AFL games with North Melbourne and Gold Coast Suns, and Damien Cavka, once on the West Coast Eagles’ list, have also joined for the premiership defence. Harris has played mainly as a half-forward since returning to local football, while Cavka will bolster the Lions’ midfield. Rumours of Redpath’s former Bulldogs teammate Shane Biggs joining Deer Park have been quashed. “Our recruitment books are well and truly closed,” Bullen said. “We won’t be signing any more players.”
Lance Jenkinson
Wolves hit turning point By Lance Jenkinson Sunday’s shut-out victory could be a turning point in the season for Williamstown Wolves in the Baseball Victoria Summer League division 2. The Wolves blanked Malvern Braves 7-0 in a dominant performance at Greenwich Reserve to claim their first series win of the season. While the Wolves are still a long way out of the top four, they will go in as favourites in a three-game series against one-win Bonbeach St Chads Bluejays before the Christmas break and it could be the impetus for them to charge up the ladder. “We really feel it could be a bit of a turning point,” Wolves playing president Daniel Chircop said. “Our team is starting to shore up. “We have a lot of guys back from holiday and injury, so they’re definitely helping the line-up. “We were confident coming into today.” Williamstown’s first shut-out of the season came courtesy of a masterpiece from import pitcher Dennis Neal. Neal, an Oakland native and former college and independent professional baseballer from the US, was impassable for eight superb innings. “He played an incredible game today,” Chircop said. “He didn’t give our opponents a chance to settle in the box, really kept them off balance well and was really dominant.” Williamstown’s defence was at its best to have Neal’s back. Jason McDonald called a strong game from behind the plate as catcher. New recruit Jayde Thorne, a South African international player, was impressive at shortstop. “We only acquired him [from Newport Rams] this week,” Chircop said. “He played shortstop and made some incredible plays that we’ve been missing defensively.” It was a day to remember for Chircop too. He produced three hits and a first home run at the level. “That was really cool,” he said before deflecting attention to a teammate. That teammate, Justin Gourlay, also hit a home run. But Chircop praised the line-up one through nine for their selflessness. “The bats were well and truly firing from top to bottom,” he said. “We really manufactured runs as a team. “Our hitting fundamentals were really good:
IN THE DOGHOUSE ■ The big name recruits continue to make John McLeod Reserve home after their AFL careers are over. Jack Redpath follows Ryan Houlihan, Brendan Fevola, Ryan Hargrave, Shannon Byrne and Brent Guerra to don the Lions’ colours during the club’s most successful era. Rumour had Jack’s Bulldog teammate Shane Biggs joining him, but he has signed with North Heidelberg. Big Red will be awesome if his knee stands up to the vagaries of local footy grounds. He showed in his limited appearances for the Bulldogs what a dominant presence he is in attack. The Lions have added other quality players and will again start raging favourites for their seventh successive division one flag. ■ Redpath is the biggest name on the clearance page but not the most surprising. I was intrigued to see Nayef Hamad move to Werribee Districts, from Spotswood, and Daniel Bunworth leaving Wyndhamvale. Hamad is a listed Footscray VFL player and if that continues he will have divided commitments. Bunworth moves to Point Cook after coaching the Falcons for the past couple of years. He is the sort of player that will be very beneficial to the WRFL Bulldogs in their adjustment to division one. ■ The Werribee and Hoppers Crossing cricketers can be well pleased with the results of their recent Movember charity game, which raised $4500. The Tigers took home the shield, giving them a 3-2 lead in the meetings. The Tigers are feasting on the back of some great batting from Matt Dean, who followed up his 113 with a match-winning 97 at the weekend. Brother Sean chimed in with 53 to make it a big weekend for the family and Travis starred for Footscray with an 80. On a sad note, former president and life member Lou Tardrew passed away last week following a short illness. Lou’s efforts and passion for both the Werribee Cricket and Football clubs will be long remembered. Condolences to his wife Margaret, family and friends. ■ Apologies for naming Greg Kennedy in the Hoppers Crossing Sports Club Hall of Fame in last week’s column when it was, in fact, Greg Mitchell. Kennedy might get there one day but for now, as senior playing coach of the Hoppers Crossing first XI, he has more pressing matters. Wasn’t a watershed weekend for local clubs with Werribee winning, but Altona, Hoppers, Williamstown and Yarraville were all defeated.

getting runners on, moving them over, scoring on a sac fly or a ground ball, sacrificing the out in the box to get a runner over the line little by little was how to put up all the runs today.” Meanwhile, Newport Rams suffered their first series loss of the season, going down 6-3 to

Boom recruit Jack Redpath will be ready to hit the ground running for reigning premier Deer Park in the Western Region Football League division 1. The former Western Bulldogs spearhead was forced to retire from AFL football at the end last season due to a knee injury. After 36 games and 57 goals in the AFL, Redpath felt his knee was not up to the rigours of AFL football, prematurely retiring at the age of 27. The good news for Deer Park fans is that his rehabilitation from knee surgery is complete and he is ready to begin training again. “From my discussions with him, he had his MRI cleared last week and has been given the green light to start training,” Lions’ coach Marc Bullen said. “He’s told me he wants to rip into it from the commencement of pre-season.” One of Deer Park’s strengths in its record-breaking run of six consecutive premierships has been its ability to manage the workloads of players.

Title race tightens after Seagulls slip up Despite its first slip-up of the season, Williamstown remains the leader in the clubhouse in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association south-west group. The Seagulls went down by three wickets to second-placed Caulfield at Williamstown Cricket Ground on Saturday. The damage was not enough to see them fall off their perch at the top of the ladder but the defending champions’ six-point gap has disappeared, with Caulfield and Oakleigh joining them on 30 points. The Seagulls will travel to Oakleigh for a two-day game prior to the Christmas break to determine which of those sides will be on top going into the new year. Williamstown could not post a big enough total to trouble Caulfield and its potent batting line-up. The Seagulls hit 9-179 off their allotted 45 overs. Patrick O’Malley, a spinning all-rounder who will represent the VSDCA against the
Victorian Country Cricket League this Sunday, made 30. His opening partner, James Cook, posted 33, while there were handy contributions from Mitchell Streiff (32) and wicketkeeper Brenton Hodges (21) in the middle order. Caulfield reached the target with 17 balls to spare, even though Matthew Twentyman and O’Malley made life difficult for it. Twentyman snared a Williamstown best 3-17 off seven, while O’Malley backed up his strong batting display with 2-37 off nine. Yarraville will spend at least the next fortnight sitting outside the top six after a 16-run loss to Oakleigh at Yarraville Oval on Saturday. Given the Eagles potency with the bat, they would have been disappointed not to chase down the target of 211. They fell agonisingly short, finishing on 8-194 off their 45 overs. Earlier in the day, Yarraville spread the workload with the ball with three bowlers – Jack Noble, Nathan Allen and Joshua Raymer – taking two wickets apiece.
The Eagles needed one player to go on and register a big score, but the best they got came from Aidan Salvado, who scored 45. Yarraville will travel to Werribee for a two-day game, hopeful of securing a victory that will see it return to the top six before Christmas. Altona found the going tough against Werribee at Grant Reserve, losing by 55 runs. The A’s struggled to contain the Werribee batsmen, who posted 3-241, thanks largely to a 148-run partnership between the Dean brothers, Matt (97) and Shaun (53). Altona was restricted to 6-186, with captain Adam Yates top-scoring with 48. Yates will represent the VSDCA in the representative game this Sunday. Lance Jenkinson Williamstown all-rounder Patrick O’Malley will play in the VSDCA representative team on Sunday. (Damjan Janevski)
Teen’s star on the rise By Lance Jenkinson Luke Plapp has stamped himself as one of the most exciting young prospects in Australian cycling this year. The 17-year-old’s incredible season has been acknowledged in the Cycling Australia awards, with the scooping of junior track cyclist of the year, junior road cyclist of the year and overall junior cyclist of the year awards. “That was a really special night,” Plapp said. “I guess for me it was nice recognition for everything that happened this year and the hard work that I put in.” Plapp showed his full potential by taking on the world’s best junior cyclists at major events this year. The wunderkind from Maribyrnong earned two gold medals and a bronze at the Junior World Track Cycling Championships in Switzerland. He came first in the men’s points race and combined with Queensland’s Blake Quick for first in the gruelling men’s madison. As part of the team’s pursuit with Quick, Canberra’s Matthew Rice and South Australia’s Luke Wright, he won bronze. “As a country, Australia doesn’t really go overseas and race any of the pre-races,” Plapp said. “We sort of just get thrown into the deep end straight away, so it was really amazing to be able to race everyone from the other countries because they race each other throughout the season. “So for Australia to go over there and mix it up with them is pretty awesome.” Plapp’s gold medal win in the madison was bittersweet. It was a massive achievement for him and Quick, but as a late inclusion in the team, Plapp felt for teammate James Moriarty, who broke his collarbone in a training crash two days before the event. “One of the golds I received, my teammate was meant to be racing in that race instead of me,” Plapp said. “He unfortunately broke his collarbone two days before the event, so I got thrown into it at the last minute. “To be able to win it for him – that’s what it felt like because it was his race – was really special.” Plapp, who trains in Adelaide as part of an elite cycling squad, was thrilled to be able to share the gold medal experience with his coach, Matt Gilmore. Gilmore was a superstar on the bike in the madison, winning a silver medal at the 2000 Olympics, and is proving to be a superstar coach. “To have him in our corner was really helpful,” Plapp said. Plapp fell just short of what he would have considered a perfect season. Having worked

so hard towards the Junior World Time Trial Championships in Austria, nothing short of a gold medal would suffice. But Plapp had to settle for silver, which, on reflection, was a fine effort given the calibre of riders he was up against. “I guess you can’t win them all,” he said. “It was pretty amazing competition and the bloke [Remco Evenepoel] that won it is the best junior cyclist to ever come through the ranks.
“It was bittersweet. I was sort of disappointed initially and it took me a while to reflect on it. But once I did I was pretty stoked with the result, knowing just how good he actually is.” Plapp, who is targeting the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, has earned a nomination for the Australian Institute of Sport emerging athlete of the year. He is also in the running for the 2018 Don Deeble Rising Star award.
Liston Tennis Club has claimed a three-peat of titles in Tennis Victoria women’s premier division. The Williamstown-based team, which is the lone western suburbs representative in the competition, climbed to the top of the mountain once again after a three rubbers to one upset of minor premier MCC Glen Iris Valley in the final hosted by MCC on Saturday. The winning score was 3-7-51 to 1-2-35. The first rubber of the match set Liston on its way to victory. In a hard-fought doubles encounter, Liston’s Destanee Aiava and Alison Bai pipped Jaimee Fourlis and Zoe Hives 7-5, 7-6. As you would expect from the favourite, MCC Glen Iris Valley fought back in the second doubles rubber. Liston’s Isabelle Wallace and Alexandra Bozovic overcame a slow start to take the encounter with MCC’s Astra Sharma and Jessica Moore to a tiebreaker. Sharma-Moore took out the match in an epic tiebreaker 11-9. At one rubber apiece, it was time for Aiava to show why Liston was so excited to add her to the team. Aiava turned the tie in her side’s favour with a commanding 6-2, 6-1 win over Moore in the singles. It was then over to Wallace to secure the title for Liston. Wallace had to fight every step of the way to overcome a gallant Sharma, eventually taking the singles rubber 10-8 in a tiebreaker. It was not Liston’s only victory on the day – Tennis Victoria presented the club with a community engagement award. Lance Jenkinson

Bulldogs put it all together By Lance Jenkinson Footscray has struggled in the opening two months of the season because of its inability to put all parts of its game together on the one day. The Bulldogs rectified that on Saturday with their most complete performance so far in a 59-run win over Melbourne in a Premier Cricket one-dayer at Merv Hughes Oval. “There’s just been a couple of things in each game that for some reason hasn’t come together,” Bulldogs captain Dylan Kight said. “A couple of losses have been through batting collapses, then we corrected our batting and haven’t been as potent with the ball. “It did all come together today, so it was a very good day for us.” Footscray’s strong total of 7-249 off its maximum 50 overs was underpinned by returning state player Travis Dean. Dean was rock solid en route to 80 off 91 balls, including six fours and one six. “If we didn’t have Trav, it could’ve been a different story,” Kight said. “He controlled our innings and set it up. “He went out with about six overs to go and from there the hitters took over.” After Dean Russ (22) and Matthew Underwood (10) took a bit of shine off the ball with a 30-run opening stand, it was over to Dean and Kight to make life hell for the Melbourne bowlers. They combined for a 109-run stand, of which Kight contributed 46 off 79 before getting run out. For the Bulldogs to post a defendable total on a good day for batting, it needed contributions from further down the order. Debutant Nathan Caulfield, who received his Bulldogs cap from Merv Hughes during the week, provided a boost with a quick-fire 30 off 23, including two sixes.
Travis Dean executes a sweep shot during his big innings of 80 for Footscray on Saturday. (Damjan Janevski)
Tallan Wright also showed his power with an entertaining 33 off 17, including three sixes. “When I got run out, all we looked like getting to was 220,” Kight said. “Nathan was in his first game today, but he didn’t let the situation get to him, he just backed himself and it paid off. “He got us going again and then Tallan finished it off with his clean hitting.”
Footscray could never relax in the field until Melbourne’s No. 3 Will Pucovski went back to the pavilion. Pucovski made 76 before he became one of Dean Russ’ three victims for the day. Russ’ 3-34 off 7.2 was huge in restricting Melbourne to 190. Paceman Lucas Dredge was damaging for Footscray with 3-29 off seven, while Wright,
Hamish Winter-Irving and Jack Sheppard snared a wicket apiece. It was a much-needed second win for Footscray, which is riding a wave of confidence from its 26-run victory over Greenvale Kangaroos in the Super Slam T20 competition. Footscray will meet Geelong in a two-day game at the Geelong Cricket Ground starting on Saturday.
