Long journey for a Digger

(Damjan Janevski)

The tale of World War II digger Marcus Gillespie and his beloved Spotswood Kingsville RSL is one of survival. Mr Gillespie, 94, is the oldest within the sub-branch, the membership of which numbered six, two and a half years ago. It has since grown to 218 after younger generations stepped up to help. The club rose from the ashes after being destroyed in an arson attack that Mr Gillespie recalls with precision. “In 1999, 4th of September, around 4am in the morning, the club was burnt down completely,” he said. “When we burnt down, we had to decide whether we were going to rebuild or not. “After two or three years of negotiations, getting things together and that, we rebuilt this one as you see it now.” On Remembrance Day, he and other veterans will be joined by schoolchildren and community members at 10.45am for an 11am service at the Spotswood War Memorial, on the corner of Mary Street and Williamstown Road. Mr Gillespie, who joined the army as soon as he turned 18 in 1942, closed his eyes when asked what he would reflect on at the Remembrance Day event: “There should not be any wars at all.” Goya Dmytryshchak

Girls-only class dropped Williamstown High School will not offer girls-only year 7 classes next year for the first time since 2001. Parents and guardians enrolling children into year 7 for next year were only told on Wednesday via email that the girls-only class would not run in 2019. Bayview campus principal Tamy Stubley stated in her email: “We have made this decision to best meet the needs of our community and to ensure the ratio of male to female students in each class is balanced”. Simon Woolley, whose daughter is enrolled for next year, said the decision had upset parents who felt the school had not honoured

a commitment to single-sex education. The school’s website states that as part of the 2001 amalgamation with Point Gellibrand Girls’ Secondary College, it would honour the single-sex education that had been running for 75 years. “A lot of people in Williamstown have chosen to enrol their girls into the girls-only stream,” Mr Woolley said. “I happen to be one of those, having had another daughter who went through the girls-only stream a few years ago, all the way from year 7 through to year 12, and found it thoroughly enjoyable. “The [school council], despite them knowing the gender balance from the applications received in May, decided two nights ago to

cancel them [year 7 girls’ classes] based upon gender issues with enrolment numbers. “We now do not have an opportunity to make applications to other single-sex schools because those applications are now closed.” Other parents who expressed their disappointment with the decision did not want to speak publicly. Williamstown High School principal Gino Catalano said only “a handful” of 275 families had expressed interest in the all-girls stream. “There’s still some very passionate interest by a small number of individuals but there’s reduced interest and we’re basically needing to accommodate the appropriate home groups for all 275 of our closest families,” he said.

“We’re actually very committed to continuing the all-girls program, not only within the classroom but also beyond, but it has to be based on the demand for each year. “We also have to ensure other classes are balanced because it’s a co-ed school. “It’s quite clearly stated that there’s no guarantee that just because you’ve nominated an all-girls [stream] that you’ll be in there. “Certainly, we will be creating co-ed classes that are well balanced.” Mr Catalano said although families submitted their enrolment preferences in May, schools were only notified of final student numbers in late August. “Then we look at what the families have requested and what we can provide.”

Pollies launch boats pledge Election promises by both major parties to abolish boat ramp fees and return all licensing and registration revenue to the industry, has been welcomed by the Boating Industry Association of Victoria. Annual permits can cost up to $315 at Altona and Newport boat ramps, and up to $202 at Werribee South. Daily tickets cost up to $25 a day. Association chief executive Steve Walker said Victoria had been “the last dinosaur” in charging boat ramp fees. “In every other state … you don’t pay to park and launch your boat and park your car and trailer there,” he said. “They encourage that because they know how good it is for the community for people to be out boating and they know how good it is for the economy to drive activity and visitation and tourism and all those things, whereas there’s too many barriers in Victoria.” The BIA, as part of its Ramp Rage campaign, is calling for a “super facility” in the west. “Whether that’s in the Werribee South precinct or Altona or somewhere in between, we know that there’s great demand, there’s population growth and lots of reasons why it needs to be addressed.” Hobsons Bay councillor Sandra Wilson said it was good news for boaters but important not to forget that fees existed because of “considerable lack of funding for ramp infrastructure, cleaning and maintenance from successive state governments over a long

period of time”. “We hope the intent of this is to not just make access free but to also address the growing costs of ramp maintenance, utilities, cleaning, dredging and new infrastructure that ramp fees still only partially cover. “We look forward to seeing the detail and how this commitment will help cater for the growth that free access will create and how it will help our ratepayers who today also subsidise the running of these facilities for local boaters and those who come from outside Hobsons Bay.”

Ports Minister Luke Donnellan said the government would compensate councils for lost revenue when the fees were abolished. “We’ll abolish parking and launch fees at ramps and make sure that every cent of licensing and registration fees is spent on boating safety and facilities. “We’ll establish the Better Boating Fund to get to work immediately on urgent boat ramp upgrades.” Opposition ports spokesman David Hodgett said the government had ripped off the boating and fishing community for four years by not returning all boating revenue to the community.

Williamstown’s Lisa Hughes is on a fast track to success after being invited to enter the Oaks Day Millinery Award and having two hats selected for display in Business of Design Week in Hong Kong. She is a student at Kangan Institute, which was chosen by the Victorian government to showcase pieces in the Hong Kong event’s Great Southern Style exhibition. Two of Hughes’ hats, inspired by the Great Barrier Reef, will appear in the exhibition, which will run from December 1-9. The second-year mature-age student has one more year of study to complete. “Kangan has been the best move I’ve ever made,” Hughes said. “I have had, and still continue as a freelancer to have, a great career

in advertising, but I just had that creative itch and I just had to scratch it. “So I am working freelance just as my day job and making hats every other waking hour.” Hughes has been working round the clock to complete another piece after gaining accelerated entry into the prestigious Oaks Day hat contest on Thursday. “I entered a competition this year which was run by the Millinery Association of Australia and I was lucky enough to win it,” she said. “It was a student entry, and one of the prizes was an immediate entry into the preliminary final of the millinery section at Oaks Day. “Crazy – it’s a very, very fast track.” Goya Dmytryshchak

Parking fix for Aircraft station By Goya Dmytryshchak Parking at one of Victoria’s worst train stations will be expanded from 200 spaces to 300 if Labor is re-elected, the state government announced last week. The government said it would build 100 new and upgraded carparks at Aircraft station. A government spokeswoman confirmed this would be in addition to 200 spaces currently provided. It will also install new lighting and CCTV.

Aircraft was ranked 207 out of 209 stations in the RACV’s 2017 biennial On Track survey, with commuters citing the difficulty of finding a suitable carpark as one of the main issues. It was the worst rated station in 2015. Altona MP Jill Hennessy said the carpark was often full by the morning peak, forcing commuters to park in local streets. “I have been campaigning strongly to upgrade carparking for local commuters and only Labor will deliver 100 more spaces and

upgrade lighting and CCTV to make Aircraft station safer,” she said. Hobsons Bay councillor Colleen Gates said the parking situation at Aircraft station had long been a problem. “It is pleasing to note the government has

listened to persistent requests from the council and local residents,” she said. “Upgrades to the Aircraft station carpark will provide people with improved access to the train station closest to their home and address the safety and amenity issues. “The icing on the cake for residents in the Altona electorate would be the delivery of more frequent bus services and secure bicycle facilities to accommodate the many locals who don’t rely on a vehicle as part of their daily commute.”

Best Italian, bar none Hidden inside an old theatre near the back beach, the doors of Williamstown Italian Social Club will open for this month’s Art & Industry Festival secret bar tour. The building at 30 Garden Street opened as the Empress Open-Air Pavilion in 1907 and later became a roller skating rink and table tennis centre. Two hundred families from the Italian club banded together in the 1970s to buy the building. Club president Carlo Abate, whose late father was one of the founding members, said the historic building had been saved from development. “That’s where all the Italians from Williamstown, Yarraville, Newport [went],” he said. “They all had this place, this club. “Most of these people are now in their 80s and 90s or deceased, so we’re trying to open it up to the next generation to keep it going.” It is one of six venues on the secret bar tour,

opening to the public on Friday, November 23 and Saturday, November 24 from 6pm until late. The club will also hold a free open day on Sunday, November 18 from noon to 6pm, with bocce, live music, and nonna’s homemade pasta dishes and drinks for sale. ‘Tastes of Italy’ sessions, where people can learn to cook and eat pasta from different regions, will be held at 1pm, 3pm and 5pm for $20. Bookings for the pasta tickets can be made at www.italiansocialclub.eventbrite.com Other watering holes on the tour are Favor & Grace in Laverton, Hopheads in Altona, Two Birds Brewing in Spotswood, Leroys in Newport and Pirates Tavern in Williamstown. Art of conversation Heesco’s art is hard to miss. Whether the portrait of former PM Malcolm Fraser on the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre in Footscray, or his mural Ms Citizen of the World looming large on the southern end of Victoria University’s Footscray Nicholson campus, the street artist’s work is a familiar sight in and around the inner-west. A one-on-one conversation with Heesco will be just one of the myriad events lined up for VU’s Learning on the Edge series of interactive events in Footscray from November 16-17. Encouraging people to get out of their comfort zones, the program includes one-on-one conversation with Heesco, authors Anna Krien (Night Games) and Enza Gandolfo (The Bridge) as well as Sun Theatre owner Michael Smith

and Sudanese-Australian former refugee Akuol Garang. Heesco says he is looking forward to the conversations and is curious about what people might ask. “As is usually the case with painters who are artists, I kind of hide behind my work I guess,” he said. “But as a street artist, because I paint a lot in public, passersby will stop and have a chat so it does become part of the practice.” Learning on the Edge events will take place throughout Footscray from November 16-17. Father Alexandros said the open day was also an opportunity for the community to learn about what the school has to offer. “We encourage people to get involved in the fun and excitement associated with the event, especially those who are thinking of sending their children to the school,” he said. Father Alexandros is especially excited by the ‘zorbathon’. “We are hoping to find Melbourne’s best zorba dancer, with the last person standing being crowned the ultimate winner.” Benjamin Millar

Colourful Greek traditions and delicious food delights will be tempting visitors to Yarraville when St Nicholas Greek School throws open its doors to the public for its open day. The school’s first ever ‘zorbathon’ promises to be a highlight of the November 17 celebrations, which will showcase the best of Greek culture and traditional food. Expect delicious spanakopita and Greek donuts called loukoumades, together with dancing and a sausage sizzle. School spokesman Father Alexandros said the open day was an important annual event showcasing the rich cultural history associated with the school, which currently has 140 students. On the run with mates By Goya Dmytryshchak Williamstown’s Roy Hamilton loved long-distance running until one day he became lost. His wife, Gaye, says a heartbreaking Alzheimer’s diagnosis eventually stopped him from running because it wasn’t safe – before two big-hearted men enabled him to resume. Now 69, Roy was originally a Wonthaggi boy who played football until his early 20s, before switching to umpiring. He has run 23 marathons. “It’s probably six or eight years ago now, Roy was first diagnosed with dementia,” Ms Hamilton said. “About 18 months ago, Roy was having difficulty, when he went for a run, finding his way home. He would get lost, run a lot further than he needed to.” On one occasion, Roy was running at Brimbank Park, where he had run for many years, and became lost. A passer-by found him – he was, by then, wearing an ID tag – and contacted Ms Hamilton. “It was clear then that it was just not a good idea for Roy to go for a run on his own,” she said. A year ago, Ms Hamilton contacted Hobsons Bay Running Club, affectionately known as the Hobos, to see if anyone might like to go for a run with Roy. Michael Slee replied and started running with Roy on Wednesdays. Another Hobo, Terry Pearce, joined him on Mondays. “They’re both such lovely generous people,” Ms Hamilton said. “If we can get this information out, my thought was that there might be more people like Roy who just don’t know how to get that sort of assistance.”

Terry said some days he and Roy had a pretty good chat. “He’s still got his sense of humour,” Terry said. “He gets a bit stumbled on some words and things, but you just keep running.” Michael said he had started singing while running with Roy, formerly a music teacher.

Proud to be a Porsche Certified Collision Centre.

“One day, probably about a month ago, I rang on the doorbell,” Michael said. “He’s often waiting there or near the front door. “Almost as soon as I walked in, he just started Volare at me, so I started singing it back.”

Thousands of shipping containers could soon be moving through the inner-west via rail rather than road following the announcement of funding for a new freight rail link. Ports Minister Luke Donnellan said $9.5 million will be spent connecting the SCT Logistics facility at Altona to the Port of Melbourne via the port rail shuttle network, after expressions of interest were invited from private industry last year. A further $16.2 million is being invested at Austrak in Somerton in the city’s north. The state government expects the projects to reduce road congestion and shift containers from residential streets to rail routes to the port. Freight Victoria is also assessing a proposal by Port of Melbourne Ltd to integrate the stevedore and rail terminals at the port, paving the way for more freight to be moved by rail rather than truck. Mr Donnellan said the combined projects would create hundreds of jobs. Maribyrnong Truck Action Group has welcomed the announcement but warned skyrocketing freight volumes threaten to quickly wipe out the improvements. “Getting 3500 trucks a day off our roads is a great first step, but with the freight load expected to triple by 2050 there still needs to be much more freight moved by rail,” it said in a statement. New flow for Pipemakers Park By Benjamin Millar Maribyrnong’s long-neglected Pipemakers Park will receive a welcome facelift thanks to a $1 million state government grant. The grant will pay for a new nature-based children’s play space, restoration of the history garden and upgrades to tracks and paths. The work, part of Maribyrnong council’s vision for the site outlined in a 2015 master plan, is being paid for from the $10 million Port Phillip Bay Environs Grants program, which

has been funded by the privatisation of the Port of Melbourne. The new nature play space will use natural materials to reflect the environment of the surrounding park. The History of the Land Garden will also be restored. The garden, developed by the Living Museum of the West and maintained by volunteers, tells the story of how occupants of the region have changed the local landscape since the 1830s.

Path access will be improved through the park and bushland areas, with new cycling signs and markings to be introduced. Pipemakers Park has returned to the control of Maribyrnong council after the council argued it was left to run down during its time under the jurisdiction of Parks Victoria. Footscray MP Marsha Thomson said the funding followed community calls for Pipemakers Park to be upgraded. “As our communities increasingly live in built up areas, the Andrews Labor government

is investing $1 million to ensure that our children and young people for generations to come are able to experience and enjoy the wonder of this natural environment,” she said. Maribyrnong planning director Nigel Higgins said the funds would help enhance the park in line with the council’s 2015 master plan to encourage greater community use. “Pipemakers Park is a wonderful recreational space enjoyed for its unique heritage and riverside location,” he said.

Films of a diverse kind Melbourne’s trans and gender diverse film festival returns to Footscray this week. The tilde film festival will run at Footscray Community Arts Centre from Thursday to Sunday, bringing a packed program spanning a range of genres. Creative director Louise Malcolm, who has been involved in tilde since 2014 and took on her current role in 2016, said the festival was inspired by film festivals overseas. “There is a bit of interest in the mainstream at the moment, but there tends to be quite a narrow representation of trans and gender diversity,” she said. “It’s important to fight the stigma and stereotyping. We are interested in expanding the variety of stories that get told. These are films that add nuance and depth to the kind of depictions we usually get.” Highlights include Transblack, a local documentary series that delves into the lives of Brotherboys and Sistergirls, as well as the tilde

Youth Shorts program featuring local film First Day, which amplifies the voices of young trans Day people seeking the right to education. The festival will include opening and closing night celebrations, a free community party on Saturday night and post-film Q&As. Malcolm said the social aspect of the festival was important. “This is a safe place for trans and gender diverse people to come together and communicate with the community,” she said. “Footscray Community Arts Centre has been very supportive from the start. We have similar values … it’s a really good fit for us.” Details: tildemelbourne.com Benjamin Millar

Passionate About Pumps An interview with Art & Industry Festival Open Day Hosts John and Annie Link John Link has had a love affair with pumps for as long as he can remember and feels very fortunate to have spent a lifetime working in an industry he loves. “What you see out here in the yard is really just a hobby that got out of control,” he said. John and his wife Annie started their business, Link Pumps, in 1959 and have been operating in Williamstown North for over 40 years. “The first pump we were asked to design was a breast pump and the next job was to repair an embalming pump,” John said. “We’ve been providing a womb to tomb service ever since. We’ve buried pipelines in swamps in Indonesia, we’ve put out fires on ships in Papua New Guinea. We’ve pumped liquorice, honey and even spaghetti.” At their peak, Link Pumps employed 35 people but their current staffing profile is about 14, most of whom have been there 10

years or more. “One of our employees is a bit of a disappointment,” John quips. “He retired after 40 years at the age of 75, but we’ve got him back now doing part time work.” John and Annie are hosting an Open Day at Link Pumps on Sat 17 November as part of the Art & Industry Festival, and will run three tours at 10am, Noon and 2pm. Each tour will last about an hour. John has a few party tricks in mind, including demonstrating how you can boil water at room temperature. “We’re part of this community and participating in this way is very important to us,” Annie said. “I think lot of people will be amazed at some of the things pumps can do.” The Link Pumps Open Day is free but you will need to register online at www.linkpumps. eventbrite.com. College graduates to year 12 By Goya Dmytryshchak Altona P-9 College will receive $4.7 million to fund its expansion to year 12 by 2021, the state government announced on Friday. As reported by Star Weekly in May, the school will be able to accommodate students enrolled in year 10 from next year, year 11 students from 2020 and year 12 students from 2021. It will be known as Altona College next year. Altona MP Jill Hennessy said the money

would be used for new classrooms and administration facilities. “We were proud to respond to the community’s calls to expand Altona College to a P-12,” she said. “Only Labor can be trusted to deliver the facilities that students and staff need as the college expands.” Principal Julie Krause welcomed the funding. “The school community would welcome any investment … to fulfil our vision for our prep to 12 school,” she said.

“Of course, you’re aware that there was an announcement made earlier this year that we were moving to year 10 next year and then moving on to become a prep to year 12 college, so any investment would certainly be welcome and would be used for new facilities to fulfil our vision.” The extra school years will be accommodated on the current school site. Altona P-9 College was formed from an amalgamation between Altona West Primary School and Altona High School (later Altona

Secondary School) about 10 years ago. The college currently has 320 students. The school site is also home to the new Altona Early Years Hub, partly funded by the government. The government contributed $1.6 million while Hobsons Bay council put $5.6 million towards the hub opening next January. More than 198 places will be available at the hub, which will offer childcare for children up to six years, three and four-year-old kindergarten and maternal child health services.

Celebrations all add up

A lot may have changed in 60 years at Wembley Primary School, but much has stayed the same. As celebrations to mark the 60th anniversary hit full swing, two teaching stalwarts have fondly recalled their time with the Yarraville school. Both Linda Turner and Gramatiki Alexiou joined the school in 1989, meaning they have been with the school for 30 years – exactly half of its existence. Ms Turner said her long connection with the school means that many of the pupils she first taught have grown up and she is starting to meet their children. “Our principal now, I actually taught in primary school as well,” she said. Ms Turner even met her husband Craig while both were teaching at the school. “I feel a very strong connection to the students and to the parents here,” she said. Ms Alexiou said she came to Wembley after teaching at another school and instantly

knew that she had found the school for her. “I couldn’t believe how nicely the students were all playing together at lunchtime,” she said. “I was very impressed by the curriculum as well.” In those days the school’s catchment was a real working class area, Ms Turner said, with most parents doing shift work in surrounding factories. “That has really changed over my time.” While the sense of harmony has carried through, Ms Alexiou noted the massive changes in terms of how teaching takes place. “There were no computers whatsoever, you were lucky to even have a TV in your school,” she said. The 60th anniversary celebrations culminated recently with a cutting of a celebratory cake, tours for past pupils, rides, games and a senior student art show. Benjamin Millar

Can you tell me about your volunteering at Williamstown Hospital Opportunity Shop?

What’s your connection to Hobsons Bay? I am a resident. I was born at Altona Hospital in 1950. I lived in Williamstown until 1969 and then I came back to live in Williamstown in 1987. Had my children in Altona. Worked in Williamstown for years in Coles and Bourkes. Bourkes was a drapery store; it’s been an icon. It was there – I think, just off the bat I’d say –

I was in here shopping and one of my neighbours was working and she said, ‘Oh, what are you doing now’, and I said, ‘Nothing at the moment’.” She said, ‘Why don’t you come and volunteer here?’ The guy that was running [the shop] said, ‘You can start on Thursday if you like’ and that was it. I think it’s either eight years now, or nine. Some of the characters you meet in here, it’s incredible. And the people on the whole are really, really friendly. I’ve always been in retail and I just find this has got a different approach. It’s more relaxed. I enjoy it. What’s something people would be surprised to know about you?

SIMON HILL FOX SPORTS A LEAGUE COMMENTATOR

with Sarah Patterson

FB: How would you rate yourself as a cook? SH: I’m going to be brutally honest. I’m a pretty ordinary cook. I am very fortunate in that my wife is a very good cook. I tend to be the wingman that does all the other stuff … the cleaning up, the washing up, the putting away. FB: What is your signature dish? SH: I can stick cutlets into the oven. I can probably make a spaghetti bolognese. I’m probably one step above boiling an egg. FB: What is your favourite food? SH: I’m not massive on seafood but I do love prawns (as a starter). I love a good steak. I like good breads with dips. And cheeses! I’m mad on cheeses … a good creamy brie with quince paste to slather on top of it. Beautiful.

As always, if you have any recipes, tips or other info you’d like to share, email me at sarah@ howdypartnersmedia.com.au

FB: Do you have a sweet tooth? SH: I do, yes, unfortunately! I’m a sucker for chocolate. A terrible binger on chocolate. In fact, so much so, that I’ve now moved onto eating low-carb chocolate. I love good chocolate gateaus. I’m a binger on the dairy milk bars. You give me a big block of that and it’ll last two minutes.

Blessed are the cheesemakers

My hubby Kevin and I recently headed to Lara where we spent the most wonderful afternoon learning how to make cheese. Janet Clayton from Cheeselinks runs regular cheese making workshops, where participants can turn out several different types of cheese in the space of a few hours. Kevin and I were in charge of making the halloumi, which turned out beautifully. I pan fried it that night and served it for dinner on a bed of spinach with a drizzle of lemon infused olive oil and a balsamic glaze. We also made fetta, Romano, a soft goats cheese and ricotta, and were treated to a lovely lunch from Janet. Learning the whole process from scratch was a real eye opener. We came away with a whole new skill set, and the very tempting option of making our own cheese at home. Get together a group of friends and have a crack. There’s nothing quite like saying you’ve made your own cheese! Details, head to www.cheeselinks.com.au or call Janet a buzz on 5282 2439.

FB: What is your favourite drink? SH: I’m a coffee man. I love my coffee. Or tea as well. I love English breakfast tea. I like a beer but I’ve never drunk spirits. I never, ever drink wine. I’m not keen on wine at all.

As always, if you have any recipes, tips or other info you’d like to share, email me at sarah@howdypartnersmedia.com.au

FB: Which five people would you most like to invite to dinner? SH: My wife. Adolf Hitler (I am a fan of political history. I would sit around the table and ask … why?). A selection of world famous footballers. FB: Do you have a kitchen tip for us? SH: For me to stay out of it? If you can’t cook, make sure you can clean.

Within a two-minute amble of Gem Pier and Nelson Place eateries, this striking residence is also within easy reach of Esplanade’s swimming beach, a regular farmers market, elite schools and the station. Entry is to the living domain, with the sitting zone first, the kitchen and bathroom/European laundry at the centre, and the dining zone at the back. Oak floor planks are laid all through, wall paint is creamy white and ceilings soar. The streamlined kitchen has excellent storage, a brekkie bar and a quality cooker. Three fitted bedrooms up top include the main with angled ceiling and contemporary dormer window. They share a spacious bathroom. A brick-paved patio looks out to a good wedge of lawn and dense plantings down one side. Included are ducted heating, evaporative cooling and rear laneway access to a remote-controlled double garage.

Ready to entice all types of buyers, this well-maintained residence is within a five-minute bike ride of Newport Lakes Reserve and a kilometre or less of four schools. Entry under a porch is to a hallway with honey-toned floorboards which head through a doorway (clever separation) to the living domain. On the way, they pass the main bedroom with walk-in robe and smart fully tiled spa en suite; two more fitted bedrooms; and the laundry and fully tiled main bathroom. The expansive living hub incorporates a galley kitchen, an appealing streamlined space with a stack of storage, stone benches, white glass splashback and Omega dishwasher and 900mm cooker. Glass sliders from both sitting and dining zones open to a north-east-facing timber deck. Included are ducted heating and cooling, three-metre ceilings, a garage and off-street parking for two cars.

Williams Real Estate: 9397 2000 Auction: November 17 at 1.30pm

Still virtually in its original condition and pining for a revamp, this circa ’60s house is nevertheless fine to live in as is. A good layout and ornate cornices on high ceilings are a good start to a renovation, while patterned carpets, the floor tiles and cabinetry styles point to the era. Two fitted bedrooms face the street, while the third is at the back and across the way from laundry and toilet. The bathroom has the original avocado-coloured tub. The lounge room adjoins a dining room that has very handy built-in cabinetry. The kitchen, with lots of old-school woodgrain laminate cupboards, has abundant bench space and a wall oven and 900mm gas cooktop. The mostly concrete backyard has a side gate to a lock-up garage/shed. Harris Reserve playground and well-regarded eateries are two-minute strolls away.

On a tree-lined street in an up-and-coming suburb, this two-year-old townhouse offers a young couple a good start in the market, as well as having appeal for a downsizer looking for minimal upkeep. Entry under a porch is to a light-filled living room and kitchen, anchored by honey-toned floorboards. Wall paint is crisp white and large windows provide garden views. Next door to the laundry, the kitchen, with charcoal cabinetry and stone-topped brekkie bench, has a dishwasher and 900mm cooker. The two good-sized grey-carpeted bedrooms have mirrored robes. They share a bright bathroom with a raised basin atop stone. Ducted heating and a split-system provide climate control, while an alarm adds to peace of mind. A timber deck out back is flanked by synthetic turf and there’s a water tank and a remote-controlled garage with internal access.

Named for the first owner’s migration ship, Abeone is a magnificent c1890s residence in a fab pocket of town. It’s directly opposite Robinsons Reserve with Williamstown Primary School just beyond, a three-minute amble from Commonwealth Reserve and Nelson Place eateries, and 10 from Esplanade beach. Aesthetically stunning right from the front gate, Abeone well and truly lives up to its enviable locale. Period detail is rich, with plasterwork on soaring ceilings particularly gorgeous. Original Baltic floorboards – which continue in reclaimed form in the contemporary zone – along with fretwork,

beautiful leadlight and three magnificent fireplaces capture history – although the house is also a contemporary delight. Along the entry hall are sitting and dining rooms, with a two-way fireplace set in an island wall, and a pair of dramatic lightfittings. Windows, one with leadlight transom, are stylishly dressed – interior decor is classy all through. Also along the hall are two delightful bedrooms, one with a fireplace set in exposed bricks, the other with french doors to deck and pool. Each has en suite access to a spacious bathroom with a clawfoot tub. Defined by a step down, the

contemporary living domain is next. Banks of tall windows draw in the light and frame pool views, while a wood heater is under an antique surround. A dropped ceiling above the sitting zone underscores other clever architectural elements. Adjoining a walk-through butler’s pantry (with Miele dishwasher) and storage-rich laundry, the kitchen has granite benches and splashback, cabinetry with lots of drawers, Neff dual ovens and a Smeg 900mm induction cooktop. Three more fitted and grey-carpeted bedrooms are up top, each with a diamond-shaped porthole window and

sharing a bathroom. The floorboarded living room here has a vaulted ceiling and a picture window. The solar-heated self-cleaning salt pool offers a retreat from the sun under a verandah, while a timber deck catches the rays. A recently revamped carpeted office/ studio with pergola neighbours the pool area, and a double carport with workshop space is accessed from the side street. Those first owners would love how their Abeone looks now…and so will today’s families. Carole Levy

Make sure your first impression counts In a world of increasingly sophisticated technology, there is still absolutely no substitute for attending an open house. Buyers need to physically experience the space, layout and feel of a home, and wise vendors work hard to turn that brief encounter into a lasting love affair. “The best video listing can still never take the place of seeing the reality, which can then start to build into an emotional connection,” co-founder of the The Agency, Ben Collier says. “It’s that moment you step through the door at an open home that you can truly begin to imagine what it might be like to live there.” It’s critical for sellers to work out the important elements for their open house. The main aim is to make a house look as spacious as possible, Distinct Sydney interior designer Batya Basson says. “How you show off that space with the placing of your furniture is the single most important thing. “Use your existing furniture – or take some out, or rent new furniture – to make the rooms look as big and as open as possible. Then create a homey, cosy feel with accessories, like plants, flowers, artwork and cushions.” Another vital element in making a home alluring is to ensure it is sparkling clean with a pleasant scent. Laing Real Estate managing director Vicki Laing has lost count of the number of openings where she’s had to take out insects, wipe surfaces and unlock windows to let in fresh air. “It’s amazing how many vendors have a film of grime over windows blocking out light, tidelines in the bath and a layer of fat on kitchen surfaces showing the exhaust system isn’t good,” she says. Decluttering is vital so visitors see how much room there is and can imagine their

own possessions in the home, Luki Scully, chief decluttering officer of Get Sorted, says. Vendors can hide their gear, store it somewhere else or hire a professional helper, like Scully, to do it for them.

“Lots of family pictures, books and personal possessions inhibit people from seeing themselves in the space,” she says. “If you see a well-organised home, a potential buyer feels they can, if they buy that home, be like that too.

“It’s all about aspirations.” This is an edited version of a story by Sue Williams on domain.com.au

FOOD REVIEW

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir tries an old favourite in a new location The Lost Footscray FB page recently sported a photograph of the Middle Footscray portion of Buckley Street – taken before the houses there were demolished. And there it was – the original Pandu’s. When I showed the pic to Bennie, he proclaimed: “That place was cool!” Pandu’s, since then, has moved on to swisher, more roomy premises on Barkly Street – and we remain sporadic customers. Truth is, though, the spicy buzz we used to get from Indo-Chinese food has faded. Instead of the dry, crunchy, zingy stuff we firstly loved, our experiences of recent years seem to have been more of sodden and gloop. But the expanded Pandu’s spreads its menu far wider – there’s biryanis, dosas and much, much more. Including a bargain-priced weekend breakfast/brunch vegetarian buffet we are keen to try. It’s beaut – and at $10.99 a super deal. And it’s a hit, too, with the Indian community – closing in on 1pm on the Saturday we visit, Pandu’s is doing brisk trade. The food is arrayed in a row of cookers and other containers. There is – this is a buffet, after all – heaps and heaps of it. Some of it is familiar, some not so. The staff are working hard so the run-through explanation we are given passes in a bit of a blur and I struggle to take it all in. Certainly, the three of us go nowhere near trying all that is on offer. Partly that is because

PANDU’S Address: 351 Barkly Street, Footscray Phone: 8307 0789 we’re old and wise enough to discard the ever-present buffet temptation of going hog wild and loading up our plates, though we all make second visits to the line-up. Being a huge fan of both pooris and papads, I revel in a bottomless supply of both. And the smooth, pale yellow vegetable curry that teams with the pooris is a treasure. Plain, unstuffed dosas are part of the Pandu’s buffet set-up, but they are brought around separately by the staff – thus avoiding sogginess!

73 MARIBYRNONG & HOBSONS BAY STAR WEEKLY \ NOVEMBER 7, 2018

SPORT Williamstown’s demolition job though, with O’Malley (78), skipper Brent McMinn (36) and Matthew Dervan (47 off 32 balls) all forming good partnerships and pushing the visitors up to 6-263. When its chance came with the ball, Williamstown was equally damaging, with an early run-out followed soon after by a Daniel Popa wicket to have the hosts reeling. Wickets fell steadily throughout the afternoon, with Brighton all out for 127. Nathan Bratby, Matthew Twentyman and Fraser Hay grabbed two wickets each in the win, which keeps Williamstown on top. Elsewhere, Yarraville earned its second win in a row claiming a thriller over local rivals Altona. Altona batted first on its home deck, and had Adam Yates (54) and Greg Sheehan (84 not out) to thank for getting it to 5-212. The pair shared a vital 97-run partnership after two early

wickets, laying the platform for some late order hitting from Shannon Clarke (19 off nine balls). Yarraville’s reply got off to a shaky start when Matthew Harrison was out for a duck, but it found stability in the form of 50s to Jack Potticary and Josh Turner. Potticary was particularly good early as he raced to 56 off just 51 balls before being dismissed, leaving Turner (96 not out) to anchor the rest of the innings with Lucas Nikoloski (19) and Mohan D’Souza (24 not out). It came down to the final over, but Yarraville held its nerve to get over the line, finishing 4-213, with Clarke (2-34) doing the job with the ball after making runs earlier. The win lifted Yarraville to eighth on the table, while Altona is still searching for that breakthrough win and remains in last place.

Dogs close in on win By Ewen McRae Footscray is confident it can claim a much-needed Premier Cricket win when its clash with Ringwood resumes this week. Despite a David King century, and just six wickets for the day, Footscray finds itself in a strong position after sending in the visitors to bat and toiling away for 96 overs. The Rams got to stumps on 6-249, but Dogs coach Stan Nell said his side was in the box seat. “I thought our guys bowled and fielded really well, I mean to keep a side to 240-odd in 96 overs of Premier Cricket is an awesome effort,” Nell said. “When you see one guy make 130 of those, it shows how well we bowled all day. It was a batting deck, very flat, so full credit has to go to our guys. “We thought sending them in was a good move as Ringwood haven’t been going that well with the bat, so on our home deck that we know well and how to bowl on it gave us an opportunity to set the game up.” Despite good batting conditions, the Dogs sent the struggling Ringwood in to bat and kept things tight early as both Hamish Winter-Irving and Tallan Wright strangled the Rams’ openers. It would be a feature of the day, with all the visiting batsmen registering low strike rates as the Dogs hunted as a pack. Jackson Freeman (7) was the first to go, after struggling for 56 balls to get his innings going, and even former Ryder medallist Ian Holland (33 off 90 balls) struggled for fluency. While the new ball pair bowled well without picking up a wicket, it was the change bowlers who did the damage as the day wore on, with Jack Sheppard (2-46) and Lucas Dredge (2-32) the best. David King showed his class at the top of the order to register another Premier Cricket century, with Sheppard getting the prized wicket just before stumps when he accepted a return catch. King had anchored the day to post 131 off 287 balls. With new rules on compulsory closure coming in this season, Ringwood would need to declare on its overnight score to deny Footscray the chance to bat out a draw this weekend. The Rams can bat a maximum of 10 overs on the second day before the Dogs have the chance to chase. Nell said his side would be confident whatever the case was. “We’ll be backing ourselves with 86 overs, or anywhere near 90 overs to chase these runs,” he said. “We’ve had some close losses so we always felt like our best form was coming.”

IN THE DOGHOUSE ■ Williamstown Football Club is pleased with the announcement last week of a $1.5 million investment into facilities at the club. The money will be used to improve the changerooms for the women’s team and also to upgrade lighting at the ground. In other Seagulls news, it was sad to see Brent Szalay stepping down from the board after five years. A young family and increased business responsibilities means the former Spotswood premiership player can’t give the time and dedication he demands of himself in the role. The club is seeking nominations for the vacancy now via its website. ■ Western Jets coach of the last six years Torin Baker has made a significant career move, heading to Hawthorn as a development coach from next season. Baker has impressed many in his time in the TAC cup competition after his own playing days from suburban footy as a Spotswood premiership player and VFL at Werribee under Alastair Clarkson in 2000. Baker’s knowledge of the under-18 competition and the type of players it is developing will be invaluable in his new role. The Jets job will be keenly sought and is an ideal starting point for coaches with higher aspirations. The future of this competition and the VFL may change dramatically in the next few years as the control of the AFL and clubs is probably going to increase. ■ Yarraville, Hoppers Crossing, Werribee and Williamstown all recorded wins in sub district at the weekend but the big story was in VTCA, where Justin Baker scored his 20th century for the Yarraville Club Cricket Club as his team piled on a massive score (364) with Andrew Cullen also topping triple figures. At Hanmer Reserve the runs were flowing as well. Damith Priyadarshana dominated with 186 as Seddon set St Albans just on 350 to win. The bowlers have some work to do. ■ The November transfer window is open for local footy and there is already one big signing, with Brenton Quinn heading back to his junior club West Footscray as a playing assistant coach. Quinny is a great get for the Roosters and will be one of the driving forces for the club on and off the field. While it is great to see Josh Hill naming St Albans as his grassroots club when VFL duties allow, I would not expect to see the former Eagle and Bulldog too many times during the 2019 season.

Williamstown again showed why it is one of the favourites in sub district cricket this year, blowing away Brighton to keep its winning start to the summer rolling. After taking on western rivals in the opening two games of the first XI west/south division, Williamstown travelled to the other side of the bay for this week’s clash and put in another powerhouse batting performance to set up a percentage-boosting win. After Brighton won the toss and sent the visitors in to bat, Patrick O’Malley and James Cook continued their strong individual form to post a century opening stand and lay the platform for a big Seagulls total. While O’Malley was more watchful, Cook was damaging against anything loose as he powered to 76 off just 72 balls before his dismissal ended the partnership at 125. The pain didn’t end there for the home side

Wise injury no obstacle By Ewen McRae A calf injury to captain Allan Wise was the only sour note on another strong day for Spotswood as it moved to the brink of its third win of the season. Taking on Sunshine United in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association’s senior division, Spotswood was clinical with the ball as it dismissed the hosts for just 136 on the traditionally high-scoring ground, before getting to stumps in a strong position. Spotswood coach Dan Schuppan did much of the damage with the ball, and said it was good to see his side rally after the loss of Wise. “We were pretty happy with how we bowled as a group,” Schuppan said. “When you’re a bowler down you’ve got to find a little bit and I thought everyone did their bit to fill the void. “It was a grinding sort of day, but we were very happy with how it all panned out.” Sunshine United won the toss and took first use of the pitch, but was soon on the back foot as Scott Dalrymple (5), Ladd John (8) and Leigh Sheridan (0) all fell cheaply to have the hosts reeling at 3-17. Schuppan was doing the early damage for Spotswood as he collected all three wickets as well as keeping the run rate in check. Wise was injured in his fourth over of the day, but the United batsmen were unable to make the most of his absence as Sangaran Nandhalal (4) also returned to the sheds at the hands of Gene Maurice (2-18). Neeten Chouhan looked solid at the other end as the wickets fell, and he built a stabilising partnership with Tom Duxson (14) before he became Maurice’s second victim. Adam Duxson made 13, while Roshan Anuruddha hit a quick 10, but neither was able to hang around long enough to help Chouhan. Chouhan’s 61 was the clear standout innings, while Schuppan bowled his heart out to finish with 5-31 off 18 overs. With a small total, early wickets were crucial for United and Roshan Anuruddha duly delivered as he dismissed Leigh Forbes (6) cheaply. That was as good as it got for the home side, with just one more wicket falling as Spotswood closed the day on 2-70. Ross Horkings (39 not out) looked strong with the willow and will be the key wicket when play resumes this week. Schuppan said there was an opportunity this week to give his batsmen valuable time in the middle. “The way I see it we’ve got 80 overs to make 66 runs, so we’ve got to be patient,” he said. “It’d be really nice to see Ross and Mac [Short] get the job done. They’ve batted together quite a bit before so this is a good opportunity for those two to put their hand up and say ‘we’ll get the job done’.”

Sports shorts VTCA

Reigning senior division premier Yarraville Club is well poised to claim its first win of the season, following a pair of centuries to Andrew Cullen and Justin Baker in the match-up with Keilor. While Aaron Cheesley (25) and Konrad Kurta (53) made valuable contributions early in the day, it was Cullen and Baker who dominated, putting on a 189-run partnership to break the game open. Cullen was eventually dismissed for 100, while Baker was run out late in the day for 122 as the Clubbers got to stumps at 5-364 from their 90 overs. Seddon is well placed to grab its second win after a memorable performance from Damith Priyadarshana. He was a constant presence at the crease all day, opening the batting and dominating the St Albans’ bowling attack to register 186, his highest score. Ben Speake and captain Liam Braithwaite both made 37 in the middle order. Seddon closed the day at 8-348.

Bowls

Altona’s disastrous start to its premier premiership defence continued on Saturday as it went down to Clayton by three shots. After the previous week’s heartbreaking one-shot loss, Altona was again cruelly denied, winning one rink and drawing another in the 75 (15)-72 (3) defeat. It is the only team in premier division yet to register a win. Yarraville Footscray went down fighting against top-of-the-table Essendon. While it claimed only one rink win, the margins in two other rinks were tight enough to keep the game interesting until the end. But Essendon eventually grabbed its fifth straight win 84 (16)-77 (2). Despite the loss, Yarraville Footscray is just outside the top four after five rounds.

Baseball

Gene Maurice picked up two important wickets in Saturday’s game. (Damjan Janevski)

Rams roll on with ninth-inning blast Newport has continued is perfect start to the summer baseball season, but not without a slight scare against Malvern on Sunday. Despite the final scoreline of the division 2 firsts game indicating a 13-3 win to the Rams, Malvern trailed by just one run going into the final inning. But the Newport batters found their range and put the game to bed. While it was tight on the scoreboard, Newport coach David Asp said he never thought his side would drop the game. “We were a bit slow out of the blocks, but I always thought we had them at arm’s length,” Asp said. “We held them pretty well throughout the day. They got a few cheap runs to stay in it, but it just took the one good innings at the plate for us and that was that.” Asp started himself on the mound for the first three innings, with Riley Barr taking over midway through the day as Malvern struggled to penetrate the Rams’ defense.

SPORT

Newport also struggled at times, but was able to open up a 3-1 lead after three innings, with the sides then trading blows to move to 4-3 at the top of the ninth. A powerhouse hitting display from Newport sealed the game from there, with Dean Malthouse and Justin Gil both landing powerful blows. Asp said the 6-0 start to the summer was pleasing and his side was aiming high. “We’ve really gelled together well, so it’s been a fun start to the season,” Asp said. “It’s early on, but our expectation is obviously to play finals and then see how we go from there. We think that’s a very achievable goal. “With the way our pitching roster and defensive work is going, we think it will be a strong season.” Ewen McRae Newport coach David Asp had another strong day. (Mark Wilson)

Williamstown’s struggles in Baseball Victoria summer league division 2 firsts continued on Sunday, with the Wolves falling to their third straight loss – this time to Cheltenham. Still missing some of its pitching depth, Williamstown struggled to contain the Rustlers, who are on a six-game winning streak to start the season. The Wolves managed just one run for the day as they went down 6-1. They will look to regroup against Doncaster this weekend in their bid to climb upwards from eighth on the ladder. Footscray’s women enjoyed their second win of the division 1 season on Saturday, outlasting a determined Doncaster side. While Doncaster was able to cross the plate 11 times, Footscray kept pace with it to claim a much-needed 14-11 win. The win lifted the Dogs to third on the ladder ahead of this week’s clash with fourth-placed Essendon.

VTCA

A five-wicket haul to Patrick McArdle helped Altona North contain Aberfeldie to 9-250 in Saturday’s division 1 west action. McArdle was tireless from the time he took the new ball, sending down 13 maidens in his 32 overs to finish with 5-53, while George Dimitriou played an important role by picking up two scalps. Both Altona North and Aberfeldie are aiming for their third straight win to start the season.
