Ghosts and ghouls, wizards and witches and every creepy character in between will descend upon Yarraville village next week for the annual Halloween extravaganza. Trick or treating will take over the village from 4-6pm Wednesday, October 31, with prizes and lollies galore. A live band and stilt walkers in front of the Sun Theatre will add to the festival air. Village traders are expecting a bumper turnout after last year’s event attracted more than 600 costumed kids. Benjamin Millar
Property prices hold firm By Goya Dmytryshchak Williamstown’s median house price rose by nearly 16 per cent in the September quarter, bucking the trend of a levelling or correction of the market, Real Estate Institute of Victoria data shows. REIV chief executive Gil King said the Hobsons Bay and Maribyrnong markets had performed well in the past year, with suburbs including Williamstown, Maribyrnong, Laverton, Braybrook and Altona Meadows recording growth of between 5 and 15 per cent. “Looking at the quarterly increase, picturesque Williamstown was the standout performer with the median house price increasing 15.9 per cent from $1.51 million to
$1.75 million between June and September,” he said. “Williamstown seems to be bucking the trend we are seeing more broadly across Melbourne where the median house price in blue chip suburbs is stagnating or declining slightly, so this is good news for Williamstown property owners who may be considering selling.” Greg Hocking Elly Partners director Wayne Elly said an area such as Williamstown, with limited and unique properties, was largely unaffected by trends. “It’s kind of consistent with what’s happened in the past when we’ve had a downturn in the market because Williamstown’s such a small marketplace, it’s a little isolated,” he said.
“For unique properties in the Williamstown market, there’s always buyers.” Sweeney Estate Agents Williamstown director Wayne Sweeney said there had been considerably lower turnover and quite a lot of sales at the top end over $3 million in Williamstown, adding to the median. “Anyone who sold before Easter basically sold on an eight-year high,” he said. “With the banks tightening their lending, it’s really slowed it up. “If you’ve got something that was around $1 million, it’s now more so $900,00-$925,000.” In the September quarter, Laverton’s median rose 5.4 per cent from $575,000 to $606,000. The suburb’s annual growth was 10.2 per cent. Maribyrnong recorded a quarterly increase
of 6.7 per cent from $1,016,000 to $1,084,500, and 9.4 per cent annual growth. Altona recorded a quarterly drop of 8.7 per cent from $1,005,000 to $917,500, which still represented 3.3 per cent annual growth. West Footscray’s quarterly median fell 8.1 per cent from $969,000 to $890,500, while its annual growth was 4.7 per cent. Braybrook’s quarterly median went down 4.1 per cent from $780,000 to $748,000, but was up 6.3 per cent annually. Newport’s quarterly median was $1,080,000 (up 5.1 per cent), Yarraville’s $1,151,000 (up 1.8 per cent), Maidstone’s $798,500 (down 5.4 per cent), Seddon’s $1,035,000 (down 1.6 per cent) and Footscray experienced no change at $950,000.

Repair pledge for proud school By Goya Dmytryshchak A little school with a big heart has been promised nearly $4 million if the state government wins next month’s election. Altona North Primary School this week received the pre-election pledge from Labor’s Williamstown candidate, Melissa Horne, and retiring Williamstown MP Wade Noonan. “A few months ago, I visited Altona North Primary School and a number of structural issues to the school’s buildings were brought to my attention,” Ms Horne said. “Both of my parents were teachers, so public
education is really close to my heart. “Altona North Primary School is a really special school with a strong social justice ethos.” The school, which has 188 pupils, plans to use the $3.8 million for much-needed upgrades. Principal Robyn Gregson said it would be nice to be able to give the children classrooms they could be proud of. “We might be a small school, and we are often overlooked, and I think it’s time that people see us for who we are,” she said. “Our children work
hard at their academic results and we bring in as many social justice areas that we can to support kids and families, and they support us back. “The support continues outside the school’s classrooms. “We do have a community pantry here for anyone who needs it,” Ms Gregson said. “Same with our breakfast club – it’s not just for children who don’t have food at home, it’s for everybody. “We use it as a social activity so there’s no stigma in anything that we do.
Industrial art links past, present An industrial revelation will take place in Hobsons Bay on Thursday. The Art & Industry Festival program – two years in the pipeline – will be launched at a former glass factory in Spotswood. The 10-day festival held from November 16-25 celebrates the western suburbs’ industrial heritage. Highlights include the return of IF: Industrial Fashion, featuring performances and costumes inspired by local industries such as train manufacturing, shipping, petrochemical plants and the iconic Newport Power Station. A series of ‘secret bars’ will be unveiled across Hobsons Bay from Newport to Laverton, and the area’s boutique brewers have also provided fashion inspiration in the form of a bottle-top dress. Films celebrating the lives of working men and women in Hobsons Bay will be screened in shipping containers at Newport, Altona and Laverton. The West Gate Bridge will be lit up nightly from dusk to view from Douglas Parade in Spotswood. It’s history and importance will also feature in an outdoor gallery at Paine Reserve and an exhibition at The Substation in Newport. There’ll also be a photographic exhibition about night-shift workers displayed at two outdoor evening exhibitions in Newport and Altona. Festival director Donna Jackson, of Hubcap Productions, said the theme was celebrating the past and designing the future. “I’m really enjoying collaborating with local artists and industry to tell stories from our past and explore new ideas,” she said. “It promises to be 10 days of industrial-strength art.” The Art & Industry Festival program will be launched on Thursday, October 25 from 6-8pm at 1 Hudsons Road, Spotswood. The festival opens with IF: Industrial Fashion on November 16 at Williamstown Town Hall. Details: www.artandindustryfestival.com.au
“We’ve worked hard with Wade to find homes for people and he’s been extremely supportive with us there. “We’ve had people living in cars, tents, caravans, so we’ve got on to the housing and fought to get them into a home so that the children have got more stability and the parents have got less stress. “We send parcels home for those that need it. “We just support those families and check in on them, see how they’re going, without making a big scene. “We gather around together. We have a fabulous community.”
Defence site interest call A 6000-home suburb is one step closer to being built on a contaminated former defence site in Maribyrnong. The Department of Defence has opened a registrations of interest process in developing the abandoned site, a 128-hectare parcel of land adjacent to the Maribyrnong River. The federal government last year pulled out of long-running negotiations over the site with Development Victoria, the state government’s development arm, then failed to find a suitable purchaser through a tender process. The site remains heavily contaminated with a cocktail of chemicals as a result of its long history as an explosives factory. Only a small portion of the site has been decontaminated and clean-up costs are tipped to reach $500 million, raising the prospect of higher-density development to recoup costs. Defence has stipulated that interested buyers will need to have demonstrated experience undertaking large-scale urban development and site remediation projects, as well as the financial capacity to acquire, remediate and develop the site. Developers will also need to demonstrate sensitivity to heritage, given the site contains a number of historic buildings. The Victorian Planning Authority is creating a planning framework for the site, which will be subject to state planning controls. Registrations of interest close on November 19, after which a list of eligible purchasers will be invited to progress to the expression of interest stage.

Williamstown Swimming and Life Saving Club is hosting a try-out day for its summer Nippers program at the end of October. Junior activities director Christine Polgar said it was a great way for children aged five to 12 to make friends and enjoy the beach in an inclusive and safe environment. She said the National Surf Life Saving Australia program was tailored to children’s ages and abilities, and taught basic lifesaving skills to be safe around water and compete in surf sports. “Everyone is invited to come to the beach to get a taste of the beach fun and education that

Tunnel work ‘nightmare’
Doctors make Nauru demand
By Benjamin Millar Year-long road closures triggered by construction of the West Gate Tunnel toll road are shifting hundreds of trucks on to residential roads, creating congestion and disrupting sleep. North-bound trucks are being redirected from Whitehall Street to Hyde Street in Yarraville as part of work to relocate a sewer to accommodate the $6.7 billion road project, scheduled to open in 2022. Hyde Street has long had curfews banning trucks from using the street, one of the reasons Nikolas Brudenell and his family moved there more than 18 months ago. Mr Brudenell said that since the detour started forcing trucks past their home, his two children are being woken by truck traffic nearly every night and struggling to get back to sleep. “I go out at 4am or 5am and find my son is up because he was woken by the trucks,” he said. “It’s happening most nights and we’re just not getting enough sleep.” Despite the impact, the government has so far refused to double glaze Mr Brudenell’s apartment windows. Mr Brudenell said other residents had been given double glazing, but told not to tell their neighbours it was happening. He said the roadworks, which are sending more than 5000 extra vehicles down his street every day, are causing long traffic snarls that can make it almost impossible to get out of his driveway in the morning. Mr Brudenell said he was not against the project, but questioned whether there had been adequate consultation regarding the impact of roadworks on the surrounding community. Don’t Destroy Millers Road spokesman Chris Dunlevy said Millers Road in Brooklyn had

A group of Footscray doctors has joined the growing chorus calling for the government to remove all children and their families from Nauru. Doctors from Footscray’s Eleanor Clinic joined hundreds of colleagues from across Australia in writing to their local federal MPs this week, demanding an end to the stalemate that has left young children, many recognised as genuine refugees, languishing on the remote Pacific island. Australian Border Force says 652 refugees and asylum seekers, including 52 children and 107 family members, are on Nauru. Eleven children have been brought to Australia in recent days for urgent medical treatment. Dr Antje Theilhaber said the Australian government must act to bring all remaining children and their families to safety. “There is no reliable medical care at all for children and adults there,” she said. Dr Antje said it was a basic human right for every child to have a safe place and appropriate healthcare. “I am a mum and every night I tuck my kids into bed and I know that they are safe,” she said. “These children are in detention because their parents were so worried about their safety that they were just trying to get to a safe place; it’s a plight they would never choose to be in.” Benjamin Millar

Fight for housing security By Benjamin Millar Catherine Deveny knows the anxiety of unstable housing. Aged just 10 when her family was thrown out of its house, the author and comedian gained an early and confronting education regarding the importance of a steady home. “We didn’t have stable housing and we didn’t have a place to call our own,” she said. “I hate the idea that people are stressing out about being able to pay their rent, I want there to be stable housing for all.”
Deveny will be in Yarraville next week as the keynote speaker at Melbourne’s first resident-led Affordable Housing Forum. The forum, organised by resident’s group HousingAIM; Affordable, Inclusive Maribyrnong, is aimed at people who want to learn more about the need to encourage more affordable housing to be built. While praising HousingAIM for putting the issue on the public agenda, Deveny warned it was also important not to let politicians and governments off the hook. “There needs to be the political will and
motivation to do something on this,” she said. “At the moment there is no vision making sure everybody has access to housing – it’s appalling and it’s shameful and we are doing their jobs for them.” HousingAIM founder Kate Breen said there has been a significant decline in affordable housing options for lower income residents in the Maribyrnong area in the past decade – from 20 per cent of all private rentals in 2007 to less than 3 per cent in 2017. “Affordable housing, particularly quality and affordable rental housing, is critical
to ensuring we continue to be a diverse community,” she said. Joining Deveny as guest speakers will be newly appointed commissioner for residential tenancies Dr Heather Holst, director of MGS Architects, Rob McGauran, and representatives from Unison Housing and the Launch Housing Lived Experience Advisory Group. The Affordable Housing Forum will be at the Yarraville Club from 6-8pm Thursday, November 1. Register via housingaim.eventbrite.com.au

Centre funding off and running By Goya Dmytryshchak The state government last week announced $3 million for the Altona Sports Centre – a third of the $9 million in co-funding that Hobsons Bay council hopes to secure. As reported by Star Weekly, the council is undertaking an $18 million redevelopment of the centre at Altona Meadows. Home to more than 30 clubs and 6400-plus registered players, the centre presently has six indoor basketball/netball courts and two outdoor netball courts.
Under the expansion, there will be four new indoor courts with grandstand seating for 1000, and two competition-standard outside courts that can be used for futsal. Altona MP Jill Hennessy said the changes would increase participation by more than 30 per cent and enable more use by schools and the local community. “This planned expansion of the Altona Sports Centre means no more frustration for local netballers and basketballers,” Ms Hennessy said. “There’ll be plenty of court space for the

whole community to play the sports they love.” The council has committed $9 million towards the centre expansion, with Altona Sports Centre Limited contributing $1.4 million. Hobsons Bay mayor Angela Altair said the centre had 70 to 80 byes a week and new teams
were being turned away due to lack of space. “While the funding has brought us a step closer, we are not yet at the stage that we need to be for building to start based on the council’s Sports Needs Analysis, which estimated the new works will total about $18 million,” she said. “Our state election advocacy campaign is asking for $9 million in government funding for the centre’s expansion. “We will continue to advocate for further contributions so we can get on with the expansion as soon as possible.”
Academy kicks off Australia’s brightest rising soccer stars are being enticed to the inner-west as Melbourne Victory unveils a new soccer academy to be built in Footscray and Maribyrnong. The champion A-League club has revealed its plans for new training and development facilities to be spread across sites at Footscray Park and Robert Barrett Reserve near Highpoint. The facilities will include five pitches for training for the club’s men’s, women’s and youth teams. By 2020, Footscray Park will have three new floodlit pitches, including a show pitch, as well as six unisex changerooms, warm-up facilities and undercover seating for 600 spectators. Two new training pitches will be created at Robert Barrett Reserve by next April, to support the Victory’s expanding women’s and youth programs.
Nearby Maribyrnong College will also partner with the academy. Victory chairman Anthony Di Pietro said the academy, the club’s single biggest investment to date, will be the best in the country. “It’s going to be what we believe is Australia’s best footballing academy, producing young boys and girls that are going to be the Matildas and Socceroos of the future,” he said. The Footscray Park location helps cement Melbourne Victory’s partnership with Victoria University’s Sports Science program. Blue Light Victoria, which works to build bridges between young people and Victoria Police, will also be at the Footscray Park site. In honour of survivors By Goya Dmytryshchak A Williamstown woman has recounted the harrowing story of her late mother for a project collecting stories of Australian Ukrainian survivors of the Holodomor genocide. Holodomor – which means death by starvation – was the forced famine imposed on the people of Ukraine by Josef Stalin in 1932-33 that killed up to 10 million Ukrainians. Survivors and their descendents in Australia are contributing their stories ahead of a photographic exhibition in Melbourne next month commemorating the 85th anniversary of the man-made famine.

Williamstown’s Janet Ferris said her late mother, Katerina Procko (nee Siwcowa) was born in Donetsk, in Ukraine’s east, in or shortly before 1922. She arrived in Australia in late 1949. Her mother’s parents were farmers or “kulaks” who scraped out a meagre survival from the small land which they owned. “My mother could not read or write Ukrainian as under Stalin’s regime the possibilities of her education were denied,” Ms Ferris said. “I vividly recall the years of the Holodomor that my mother remembered as a young girl and the horrific stories which still haunt me to this day. “She remembered how hungry she was and how in the mornings soldiers would come and prod the land with huge poles to see if anyone had hidden food. Stories of the past and voices of the future are coming together in a popular initiative by a Footscray kindergarten. Children from Brenbeal Children’s Centre have been visiting Doutta Galla Aged Care Services every fortnight since early this year. Kindergarten educator Angela Zhang said the visits often start with playdough and activities, move on to painting, drawing, puzzles and playing with Lego, followed by a shared afternoon tea. “Many of the residents really look forward to seeing the children,” Ms Zhang said. The visits are part of Brenbeal’s focus on building relationships across the Footscray community. Ms Zhang said the children seem to enjoy the visits more and more each time and look forward to their next visit. “The children are now also not shy being around the elderly and can have good conversations with them.”

Altona-based photographer, art therapist and dog behaviourist Zoya Martin has always lived in the West where working night shift is common place for friends and family members. “When I was 15, I did the 11:00pm to 3:00am shift at McDonald’s and would go to school the next day,” she said. “Everything is so much easier when you’re a teenager!” An image of a family inside a car at night with the light on inspired her to think about what she could bring to the festival. “I live in this industrial suburb and drive by refineries and other industries every day and it’s easy to forget the people who are working while we’re all sleeping.” Zoya has spent long nights photographing night shift workers including a train driver, water police and even a shoe-maker. “They stay up all night to make sure everything
is functioning safely. It’s reassuring,” Zoya said. She hopes her work will prompt festival goers to connect more strongly to this human side of industry. It was important to Zoya that the exhibition had an authentic industrial feel. Presented as an outdoor installation, the photographs will be printed onto fabric cylinders and illuminated with industrial work lights. ‘Night Shift’ can be seen as part of ‘A Night in Newport’ at Paine Reserve on Saturday 17 November from 6:00 to 10:00pm and again as part of ‘A Night in Altona’ at Logan Reserve Saturday 24 November. Both events start at 6:00pm and conclude at 10:00pm. The Art & Industry Festival 2018 runs from 16-25 November. Response crews saved by Bell By Tate Papworth A largely unknown factory tucked away in Sunshine North is making a big impact across the state. If you’ve passed by an emergency service vehicle recently, there’s a good chance it came from Bell fire and rescue. Bell’s business development and industry engagement manager Peter Fowler said the company works with a variety of agencies. “We work very closely with agencies like the CFA, MFB, SES, Emergency Management Victoria, DELWP and we design and manufacture all the various types of vehicles for them to go out into the operating environment,” Mr Fowler said. “A major part of our business is also the building of vacuum jetting vehicles, which are designed and made here. They work on a lot of the road, rail and infrastructure projects.” The company also recently completed a series of new specialist police vehicles designed to respond to public order incidents, boosting police capacity to rapidly respond to hostile and violent crowds and riots. The four vehicles are designed to fit an entire crew of Public Order Response Team (PORT) officers – including all of their protective gear and crowd control equipment. They can carry up to eight officers and mean that a PORT crew can travel together, giving police the ability to respond to incidents faster and more effectively. Previously, PORT officers were required to travel in SUVs to jobs, with two officers in each car so they could fit in all their equipment. Police Minister Lisa Neville said the vehicles are a significant boost to police capabilities. “The Public Order Response Team has been given a major boost, with 40 new staff,

support officers, new equipment, and now new transport vehicles to help them respond to major incidents,” Ms Neville said. “These officers are on the scene first, so it’s essential they can get there quickly and have access to every tool they need to keep Victorians safe.”

With the project now complete, Mr Fowler said the team at Bell fire and rescue wants to engage with the Brimbank community. “We’re aiming to support the entire area,” Mr Fowler said. “We want to link up with education providers and give opportunities people might not
be aware of. A lot of the universities have final year students that might want to undertake a design project and this is a real life situation. “They have the ability to design an element of an emergency services vehicle, whether it be a hose reel or anything innovative.”

Net gain for future stars A new netball club is shooting for the stars in Melbourne’s inner west. Netball coaches Sue Phillips and Jude Donovan are launching the RISE Netball Club, pitching it at aspiring representative players looking to take the next steps. The two local mums saw the need for a new type of club dedicated to ensuring players had the resources, training and coaching to become the best netballers they can be. Phillips said community clubs were home to players with a wide range of abilities and commitment levels, making it challenging to give ambitious players the attention and support they might be seeking. “There’s definitely a gap – traditionally, there are community clubs and then the
representative teams,” she said. “This will be for the players looking for really intensive training sessions.” Phillips said she and Donovan had attained Netball Australia accreditation. Donovan said RISE would pull together like-minded junior athletes. “We believe strongly being a great netballer requires training in multiple aspects,” she said. RISE Netball Club will enter teams in the Parkville 2019 autumn season. Passionate players aged between nine and 15 interested in joining RISE are invited to register for the next club trial on October 30. Details: risenetballclub.com.au

MY PLACE West Footscray celebrant Ted Logan, a former Footscray mayor, has penned his third book of poetry. He speaks with Benjamin Millar. What has inspired your poetry?
Vietnamese people. Now it’s the turn of people from the Horn of Africa to come and make their lives here. Footscray seems to be a place of first harbour, it is a welcoming place. People seem to get on very well.
What I have been trying to do all along is to give a biography more or less of my life from the early days, using events or occasions that took place in my life. I put it into poetry verse and hope it’s of interest to other people. I was born in England and was there for the early part of my life up to 15. My father was away for much of the Second World War, I have called it a war-time childhood. We had a free and easy childhood with dad away and other dads away. My mother had a hard job with us and had a baby on the way as well. We more or less brought ourselves up.
What have been some of your highlights as a celebrant? I’ve done about 5560 weddings and over 1000 funerals. I’ve done two weddings in baskets under hot air balloons. I did another wedding on the ice when they used to freeze over the Myer Music bowl. Most of the guests were part of the skating community and they put on a display afterwards. It was quite marvellous.
What brought you to Australia?
What’s your connection with the inner-west? When I left teacher’s college, I was teaching in the country for a few years. When I came back to Melbourne some years later, real estate
(Damjan Janevski)
My father had been away for three or four years with the British admiralty as an engineer, doing ship conversions and repairs in India, until 1946 and the lead-up to Indian partitioning. We thought he was coming back to England, but we got a letter postmarked from Melbourne, Australia. That’s how we came out in 1947. For about 12 months we were living in a rented flat, then mum and dad bought a house in Beaumaris. I went to Melbourne High and teacher’s college, after that I was a primary school teacher.
What can you tell us about your latest poetry collection?
was pretty expensive where I was teaching at Middle Park. The nearest I could afford was Footscray, so I bought a house in Footscray. I became a councillor in Footscray, I was mayor three times. I was busy during that period of my life, doing weddings and council and still teaching.
What do you like about living here? I think it’s vibrant and a lot of new residents are always moving in. Footscray has always been a place of arrival, the first home for migrants from all around the world. You had the Yugoslavs after the war, then the
There are a lot of narrative poems, I tell a story. I try to give them a twist at the end. One of them is called The Six O’Clock Swill, about a hotel raid when I happened to be in there when the police raided it. Another is about when I was teaching at Lang Lang and was teaching a lot of children of the warders and staff of the McLeod Prison Farm on French Island, I was invited over to watch a football game between the Geelong Football Club and prisoners. I did a sonnet for each birthday between 83 and 86, and there’s a poem about the Bulldogs’ AFL premiership and the royal visit in 1988. Copies of Poetry Potpourri 3 can be purchased from Yarraville’s Sun Bookshop or via tedlogan@ hotkey.net.au.

Mantra’s success speaks for itself It is innovative, fresh and growing – not just the business, but the menu and reach.
M
antra Studio, Kitchen and Bar was created by local singer/songwriters Patsy Toop and David Baird, a duo known as ‘The Long and Short of It’. Its great feel is thanks to an industrial vibe and groovy renovation. It’s located in the old Dickies Towels warehouse in Yarraville. Think multi-paned steel and glass doors, concrete floors and a beautiful bar. Art deco features have been retained, adding to the atmosphere. Mantra has a fantastic restaurant space downstairs and a function space upstairs which has proved popular with local businesses thanks to Mantra’s flexible catering and urban feel. The recording studio (soon to be completed) upstairs is linked to a sound-proof small theatre and recording room downstairs, otherwise known as ‘The Guru Room’. This space is perfect for intimate ‘up close and personal’ shows, podcasts and functions. Patsy says Mantra is getting loads of inquiries for Christmas functions as word is spreading. “Chef is currently re-thinking our already successful menu and broadening the offering. We will still have our popular tapas-style dishes but we’ll be offering a high-end fine dining experience in coming months, so look out for that,” she says. “Parking is great as we have 31 visitor parks on-site. As we are in an industrial and office precinct, come 5pm there are many

more parking spots around the venue.” The much-loved state-of-the-art studio space, built with musicians in mind, is also getting plenty of bookings for podcasters and YouTubers, something Patsy said they did not even consider when they first imagined the space. “There are a lot of locals who make their livings pod casting, running YouTube channels, which I didn’t realise,” she says. “The sound-proof space is great as you can set it up as a true-to-life studio space

and do interviews and create a professional look which our regulars really love.” Fun weekly events include trivia night on Thursdays which is fast becoming a favourite with locals, and the open mic night is gearing up to run every Wednesday. “We also have regular live music in the restaurant and bar area, so it’s great for date night,” David says. Mantra has become a destination venue. It’s a melting pot of creative food and live music.
“Our venue spans two floors, with the top floor all about the studio, as well as a pool table for the ultimate in relaxed, communal vibe. The ground floor has a large bar, plus a sprawling light-filled dining area with tables spilling out on to the street.” Mantra Studio, Kitchen and Bar, 10a Campbell Street, Yarraville. he family-owned Hoppers Crossing business that supplies natural stone pavers and tiles - these days run by the team Rin, Oliver, Shaun, Mel ,Connor and Paul - has expanded rapidly and now supplies thousands of products to commercial and residential customers, Australia-wide. Shaun says the company has created inspirational showrooms for its vast range of natural stone. “Following years of gathering knowledge and expertise, fired by passion, we have created displays of beautiful natural stone and offer design concepts,” Shaun says. “We’re always up to date with all the trends and styles and, because we keep stocks at a high level, our customers will never have to wait to get the product they want. “We have a very qualified team to provide industry insight, advice and tips. Get Active for better hearing Cris Ivanidis, owner of Active Audiology in Altona, and his colleague, audiologist Marina Opacak, are offering trials of the latest invisible in-ear hearing aids from Oticon Opn.
C
ris says audiologists at his clinic have been fitting Opn technology in the behind-the-ear style for the past 12 months with very consistent results – and now the latest invisible in-ear hearing aids have arrived. “We found, with the behind-the-ear Opn hearing aids, that patients were coming back feeling more confident in conversations in group situations,” Cris explains. “Their speech understanding was greatly improved and listening strain reduced – which meant they didn’t feel exhausted at day’s end. “Just last month, the new invisible in-ear aids were released, using the same amazing technology but for wearing inside the ear. They are so tiny but pack a powerful punch in user features. “The difference with Oticon is the 360-degree sound experience. Traditional hearing devices block out surrounding noise and focus only on what is in front of the user. In contrast, the Oticon Opn hearing aids collect sounds all around, giving users a more natural and complete hearing experience.” Clinicians at Active Audiology are keen for people to know that, according to the latest studies, untreated hearing loss gives rise to a greater risk of dementia. “Hearing aids lessen the burden on the brain, helping stave off cognitive decline and leaving users less tired,” Marina says. “If you have two people with hearing
loss, both will experience a degree of mental decline, but the hearing aid user will experience less brain deterioration.” Marina believes finding the right hearing aid is only half the solution. “The other half is finding the right professional who puts people at ease and is technically competent with fine-tuning,” she says. “I see many people who have been fitted with aids from other clinics, only for them to put them in a bedside drawer because of disappointing results. “After a 60-minute appointment, I can re-tune the settings and make the aid feel comfortable and functional.” Active Audiology is one of the few remaining independent clinics in Victoria. Clinicians are free to prescribe all brands of hearing aids without any commercial restrictions. All the brands, to suit any budget, are available, giving patients the ultimate choice. Care call for Cup weekend driving On the Melbourne Cup long weekend, Victoria Police will be out in force for Operation Furlong, which will run from Friday, November 2, to Tuesday, November 6.
(Joe Mastroianni)
R
oad policing adviser Sergeant Marty Wallace says Operation Furlong will be conducted throughout Victoria using all available personnel. He says the Melbourne Cup holiday weekend provides an opportunity for families to free themselves from their usual commitments, so it is anticipated that large numbers of people will use Victorian roads, often driving long distances in unfamiliar driving conditions. “Drivers are requested to plan their trip, be patient and ensure that they take at least a 15-minute break at least every two hours and don’t drive if they are tired,” Sergeant Wallace says. The times of highest risk are when people are leaving for holiday destinations and returning home. Police will be targeting the main causes of fatalities and serious injuries in crashes which are: • Excessive speed • Driver distraction • Restraint non-compliance • Fatigue • Impaired driving (alcohol and/or drug) Speed cameras will be in use in known high-collision locations. Road trauma isn’t just about the people who die – it’s about the enormous impact on the community, from the family members and the emergency services workers who have to deal with these tragedies on a daily basis to the police who have to deliver the devastating news to

loved ones. RoadSafe Westgate Community Road Safety Council chairman Jim Giddings says the entire community has a responsibility and a role to play in reducing road trauma. “It has been demonstrated time after time that speed is a contributing factor in most road crashes,” he says. “Speeding affects both the risk of a
crash happening and the severity of injuries sustained when a crash does happen. “Holiday driving has its challenges and drivers should drive in the hours they are normally awake, take regular breaks to reduce fatigue and allow extra space between vehicles. “Drivers need to adapt to the conditions of the road – the onus is always on the
driver to suit the conditions they are facing, and that includes the quality of the road. “Before embarking on any driving trips, drivers should check their tyres, windscreen washers, brakes and lights.” The community is being asked to report speeding drivers to Crime stoppers on 1800 333 000.
DRIVING IS NOT A GAME! SPEED KILLS!
Don’t make a Grave Mistake
Speed is the largest single factor in fatal road crashes on our roads. RoadSafe Westgate and your local council support reporting speeding drivers to Crime Stoppers.

A club for the whole community It started 60 years ago as a working men’s club, but these days not-for-profit Altona Sports Club is kicking goals in many areas: dining, entertainment, sports and functions, as well as generous community sponsorships.
C
lub manager Gavin Comport says what hasn’t changed in six decades is the friendliness and inclusion of everyone in the community. “It was true all those years ago that people needed a place to socialise and engage in activities together and it’s still the same today,” Gavin says. “Because we have a reputation for welcoming everyone, we know some of our customers would be at a loss without being able to pop in for a drink, a game of pool or darts or be part of the cricket and lawn bowls teams.” The club has three function rooms, perfect for any occasion, weddings, engagements, birthdays or that special event. The Main Hall caters for up to 250 guests, the Waterfront Reception Room and Seaview Lounge both cater for up to 120 guests – they have all needs covered. At this time of year, the club turns its attention to Christmas functions and staff break-ups. The Main Hall, the scene for Saturday night ballroom dancing, bingo and tribute shows; Waterfront Reception Room, for up to 120 guests; and the more intimate Seaview Lounge, with outstanding ocean views and perfect for corporate meetings. Now warm weather is here, the outdoor area is the spot for enjoying a sea breeze while having a drink with the family or even a meal from the bistro. The Seaview Lounge is the place to enjoy live entertainment every Saturday night – or get into free karaoke on Friday nights.
Performer Brendon Scott entertains the crowd and, bottom right, Janene Harg and Ron Williame hit the dance floor. (Pictures: Damjan Janevski)
And, of course, the Sports Bar has its own feel, with three pool tables and plenty of after-work chat. “This coming Saturday (October 27), we again welcome Five and a Half Men to the club. They kick off at 9pm and guarantee a great night with their hits from the ‘70s to today. They’ll have everyone up on the dance floor,” says Gavin. “Then on November 30, it’s “Back to the
’70s & ’80s” in the Main Hall, bringing hits from Abba through to Guns ‘n’ Roses. “Then on December 7 it’s Wendy Stapleton with The Swinging 60s Show.” The recently revamped Bayview Bistro has a great menu, with something for everyone, including the kids. The chef offers a modern-Aussie take on steaks, burgers, pasta and seafood and has retained some classic dishes such as
lambs fry and bacon, roasts, chicken parma and even bangers and mash. And with sticky date and gooey chocolate puddings on the dessert menu … no more needs to be said. Altona Sports Club, 11 Altona Road, Altona. Inquiries: 9398 2283 or visitaltonasportsclub.com.au

Commemorating the Great War To mark the 100th anniversary of the signing of the World War 1 Armistice, the Air Force Association will hold a public torchlight commemoration on November 4 at RAAF Base Point Cook to honour the memory of those who served and paid the ultimate sacrifice.
O
ne hundred years ago… at 11am on the 11th day of the 11th month … the guns on the Western Front fell silent and World War 1 came to an end with the signing of the Armistice in France, ending four years of brutal and destructive conflict known as the Great War. “100 years is a little more than an average life time, so it’s very likely many of us know a family member who served in the Great War,” says Carl Schiller, OAM CSM, president of the Air Force Association. “Many of those who went to war came home as very different men. So widespread was the loss that almost every family in every community was touched in some way by this conflict.” They include 209 men from the Australian Flying Corps (the forerunner of the Royal Australian Air Force) who lost their lives in World War 1. The names of those 209 men rest in a sealed copper canister that was placed inside the Australian Flying Corps Memorial at RAAF Base Point Cook at the memorial’s inauguration in 1938. In 2016, a second copper canister was interred in the AFC Memorial to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the deployment of the Australian Flying Corps in the Great War, containing the names of 11,401 Australian Flying Corps and Royal Australian Air Force airmen and airwomen who have lost their lives on operational service to that date.
When: Sunday, November 4 7-8.30pm BYO: Small torch, rug/chair Where: RAAF Base Point Cook – open to public (follow directions to AFC Memorial) Entry: From Hoppers Crossing, Werribee: enter/exit via the ‘West’ gate; From Point Cook, Altona: enter/ exit via the ‘North’ gate).

The Air Force Association was established in 1919 to foster the spirit of friendship formed in service, to perpetuate the honour and ideals of the Royal Australian Air Force and to provide support to members in need.
Today the association continues to support the welfare and wellbeing of veterans through advocacy, social networking and commemorative events. “Members of the community are invited to join our serving members past and
present at RAAF Base Point Cook, the birthplace of Australian military aviation to participate in this historic and memorable centenary event,” Mr Schiller says. The Armistice Commemoration will include an historical aircraft flypast followed by a Commemoration and Remembrance Ceremony, with music from Werribee Concert Band. A wall of red poppies created by the 5000 Poppies organisation – that has created stunning poppy displays for commemorative events all over the world, including the Australian War Memorial – will provide a stunning backdrop to the memorial itself. For further information, visit raafavic.org.au or call 9813 4600.
Join us for a torchlight ceremony to commemorate the centenary of the Armistice that ended the First World War. Experience an historical aircraft fly-past, the Commemoration Service and a Poppy tribute.

Developed with heart and soul Incore Developments was launched earlier this year to focus on end-to-end management of property projects across all sectors. Behind the new venture are seven experts, self-described as “lean and mean” and who come from a diverse background within the property and construction industry.
I
ncore’s first project was the development of 12 factories in Altona, for which the business received high praise from purchasers. Senior development manager Tas Christodoulou says that because of Incore’s quality approach and attention to detail, some of those purchasers are keen to come on board the upcoming Fort Altona, a business estate with 28 warehouses, 41 flexi-spaces, four offices and a cafe. Tas explains the Incore process, which is driven by well-honed values based around culture, agility, social responsibility, legacy, relationships and innovation. “Our first step is conducting exhaustive market research to ensure a project will add value to the area, through meeting a demonstrated shortfall in business needs and activating local employment,” he says. “Once we have acquired a greenfield or infill site, we take our proposition to councils to gain permits for planned usage. “Our own research and ability to successfully pull a project together with the guaranteed support of Civilex and Conset’s expertise in the civil and commercial construction fields means councils and communities are very supportive to our innovative ideas. “We take care of all the marketing, including naming of developments and branding in the marketplace, and set up
pre-sales through real estate agents. We then move to construction, engaging a third-party builder we know to be reputable and with a demonstrated history of success.” Tas and the rest of the team believe they set a benchmark in the property development sector, ensuring they offer a genuine point of difference. “The facilities we design incorporate a degree of flair in terms of architecture and the way buildings relate to each other, as well as responding to needs expressed by the community,” he says. “We ensure spaces are really functional, with a look and feel that surpasses what competitors may offer. “We are on board from the beginning to the end, whether we are developing a large industrial estate, a commercial precinct or medium to high-density townhouse development. “Our aim is to create a lasting legacy of quality developments for the generations of today and tomorrow.” Construction of Fort Altona will begin soon, while concept plans for a 30-lot subdivision in Truganina are in the pipeline. Incore Developments, 208-210 Hall Street, Spotswood. Opens 8am-6pm weekdays. Inquiries: 9391 8800 or visit incoredevelopments.com.au. For details on Fort Altona, visit fortaltona.com.au

An invitation to fantastic sleep Forty Winks in Highpoint’s Homemaker Centre is once again hosting its annual VIP night – with all mattresses half price and 30 per cent off the entire furniture range.
S
tore owners Helen and Tony are excited about the event – to be held on Tuesday, October 30, from 5-8pm – and the opportunities it provides to offer customers such huge discounts. “While customers are browsing for exactly the right mattress or piece of bedroom furniture they might have been waiting for, they can enjoy some canapes with a beverage – what a nice way to shop,” Helen says. “We’ll also have our sleep specialists in attendance to assist with purchases and offer guidance in choosing the right mattress. And a major prize will be drawn at 8pm.” Helen understands that with so many mattresses available, choosing the right one can be a challenge. “That’s why we now have the new Bed Match technology to take out the guess work,” she says. “Backed by the largest sleep study, Bed Match uses technology to profile a customer and identify the mattress best suited to their personal postural support and pressure relief needs. “Customers won’t have to navigate this technology alone – our well-trained sleep specialists will guide them through the process.” Following Forty Winks’ partnership with Qantas frequent flyer program, store members can earn points on all their shopping and, on the VIP night, points will be doubled.
The store stocks a large range of products and high-quality mattress brands. “We also now have a Prestige Room, which displays a selection of luxury mattresses from Silent Partner, featuring Versailles, Chateau and Provence,” Helen says. “The hand-stitched luxury range from King Koil is also on the floor.” All sizes, comfort levels and price points are represented in-store, with each mattress from leading brands backed by solid warranties and guarantees. Store manager Michelle and sales consultants Phil and Nicholas have a load of knowledge about mattresses and bedroom furniture and will happily offer their expertise. The entire team is passionate about sleep science and knows what it takes to deliver a good night’s sleep. “Dr David Hillman, the director of the Sleep Health Foundation, says just like smoking, obesity or over-drinking can cause real harm, so, too, does lack of good sleep,” Helen says. “We encourage anyone wanting to improve their sleep to come in and discover what relief there can be in having the right mattress.” Forty Winks, 4/179 Rosamond Road, Maribyrnong. Opens 9am-5.30pm Monday-Thursday; 9am-8pm Friday; 9am-5pm Saturday; and 10am-5pm Sunday. Inquiries: 9317 9222

anager David Hanson says the club is always busy, staging events for the community and providing a place that people can call their own. The next event planned is around the Melbourne Cup. “We’re putting on a chicken and champagne lunch in Gunners Bistro on the big racing day,” he says. “We’re expecting lots of people to come in and get among the buzz, moving from the lunch to watch the big race on one of our big screens. It will be a great social day for our regulars and visitors. “Then on Sunday, December 2, we’re running our annual members’ Gala Day. “This is always a big one, where raffles and other draws mark the day with more than $5000 in prizes and $2500 in member’s draws up for grabs. We invite all our members to come in and be a part of the excitement.” Christmas is another busy time for the club. A function space able to cater for up to 200 has a multi-media set-up and a bar and is perfect for work break-ups – different menus can be viewed on facebook.com/ altona.rsl/. And a courtesy bus operating Thursday to Sunday makes organising a work do even easier – and safer. Gunners Bistro, under the helm of head chef Chris Cox, is a great spot for lunch and dinner every day except Mondays. people for $70. As Chris says, it’s probably the swankiest food to be found at any club. Most nights have a special theme, along with the a la carte menu and regular blackboard specials. Tuesday nights offer up great parmas; Wednesdays it’s Steak ‘n’ Pot’; Thursdays it’s a $17 seafood platter; and on Sundays
there’s a three-course carvery. Every Friday night and Sunday afternoon there’s live music. Jason Singh, former frontman of Taxiride, brings his own style on relaxed Sunday arvos in the main bar. Every Monday and Thursday night, yoga classes are offered free for veterans, their immediate families and first responders.
Memberships are available for $30 a year, providing benefits such as food and beverage discounts, a $20 birthday voucher and RSL Rewards Program which links with all Victorian licensed RSL clubs. Altona RSL, 31 Sargood Street, Altona. Inquiries: 9398 2817 or altonarsl.com

Recently on the Food Bytes podcast we covered a very controversial topic: Does anybody actually like the orange cream biscuits in the Arnott’s Assorted Creams pack? My experience – on opening up a pack at home or at work – is that people tend to leave the orange ones behind. A lively discussion ensued on the merits of the humble orange cream biscuit (apparently lots of people like them!), not to mention the Kingston, Monte Carlo, Shortbread Cream and Delta varieties. With biscuits still on my mind, I decided to do something equally controversial with my husband’s favourite biscuit, the humble Mint Slice … I turned it into a cheesecake. Well, a choc mint picnic pie, to be fair. Creamy, peppermint-spiked cheesecake on a layer of Mint Slice biscuits, on a layer of creamy chocolate ganache, on a layer of chocolate pastry. This is a fun – albeit a tad fiddly – dessert to put together but well worth the results. You can see the Mint Slice biscuits in every piece you cut. Just don’t get too heavy handed with the green food colouring or your choc mint picnic pie might end up looking slightly radioactive, as mine did (see photos!) You’ll find the recipe for Choc Mint Picnic Pie at www.taste.com.au

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir finds plenty to explore at Karlaylisi KARLAYLISI RESTAURANT Address: 4/203 Ballarat Road, Footscray. (Don’t let the Ballarat Road address mislead – Karlaylisi is on Gordon Street.) Phone: 0413 955 515 and nicely plain mix of lamb and vegetables on a mound of noodles. You could pitch this to picky kids as a spag bol variant, no problems. From the dumpling/pastry list come tugra ($13), lamb dumplings. Once again rather plain, they nevertheless go fine. Aqqik korulgan chop ($14.50) is a much sexier (ie. oilier and with some chilli heat) noodle dish with lamb, garlic chives and sesame oil. Kala til kormisi ($14) is stir-fried beef tongue. I expected this to have a more pronounced chargrill or wok hei aspect. Instead, the meat is quite silky and very tender. The overtly meaty vibe of our menu choices is ameliorated by the complementary salad presented to us. Laohusai ($13) is a delight, zingy and fresh with loud voices of garlic and vinegar coming through. We will return to Karlaylisi – there’s so much to explore!

Don’t let the Ballarat Road address mislead – Karlaylisi is on Gordon Street. In fact, it occupies the exact same premises as the sadly short-lived Spice Klub and its Indonesian offerings. Karlaylisi delivers Uyghur cuisine – the food of the Uyghurs, who live mostly in China’s Xinjiang province. There’s oodles to like about Karlaylisi. Indeed, it could be tossed up as the perfect template for the perfect CTS eating house. The menu is long, stuffed with dumplings, hand-made noodles, soups, cold dishes and kebabs. And lots and lots of lamb dishes. Some items are certainly for larger and planned groups – the roasted whole lamb ($350, $180), for instance. Or even the lamb casserole with steamed wrap bread ($60). Yet despite the ambitious menu and that this appears to be a one-man show, we found our food to be fresh, hot and delivered to our table with admirable speed and wide smiles. An early highlight – actually, THE highlight – are the lamb skewers ($2 each, minimum of five). These feature bigger chunks of meat than we’ve had elsewhere. They’re more tender, too, and a little less seasoned with salt and cumin. There’s some fat, but it all tastes way more than good. Siyi qanalgan lagman ($14.50) is a homely

SPORT Club, players welcome Wise counsel the club, you just can’t put a price on that. He’s just a star, and myself and all the guys at the club are just trying to learn as much as we can off him. “He’s a genuine asset to have around.” Wise called time on his Premier Cricket career at the end of the 2016-17 season, taking with him a club record 541 First XI wickets in his 286 games at the level. The left-armer said it had been a smooth transition to the VTCA, and after taking on the captaincy this season he hoped to guide his side into finals and beyond. “I think it takes a year to get used to the level, and it’s certainly a bit more relaxed than Premier Cricket, but I’ve really enjoyed the change,” Wise said.
“Getting used to longer sessions here, just the one break, all that stuff takes some getting used to, but the players are just as passionate and the club has been great to me since I walked in the door. “It’s always different when you spend 20 years at one club and then you go to a new one, but the appetite to win has been really pleasing and the club is really well run so I couldn’t be happier. “I think every side will be aiming for finals this year, but we certainly feel like we’ve got a better balance to the team this year and after just missing finals I think we’re well placed to take the next step.” Ewen McRae
Good signs for Spotswood By Ewen McRae Spotswood is hoping an increased focus on its batting over the off season will reap big benefits this season, and the early signs are good. After just missing finals in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association’s senior division last season, new coach Dan Schuppan said he was looking for greater output from top orders across the club this year. “We talked about some home truths and a few statistics about our batting from last year which don’t lie, and my job as a first year coach is to challenge the guys,” Schuppan said. “The way they’ve responded after a pre-season that really couldn’t have been better has been very pleasing, albeit still early days. “We put a high emphasis on batting this pre-season, especially batting for long times and that’s been the big take away that we’ve brought into games now. “We got four wins from four in round one as a club, so there’s a good feeling around the club and everyone’s really positive.” While round two was washed out at the weekend, Spotswood’s First XI started the season in style in the opening round, with the top order showing the way on day one to post 5-311 against Seddon on the back of an unbeaten 108 from Gene Maurice. After bowling Seddon out for 289 on week two, Schuppan said the signs early in the season were good for his side. “You can only go on the one game, but we only lost the five wickets in 80 overs of cricket so that was a huge positive,” he said. “We didn’t want to lose back-to-back wickets, which we were able to avoid and constantly build partnerships which in recent years has been something we’ve struggled with.” Spotswood has added former junior player Mac Short to its line-up, after his time playing premier cricket for powerhouse Melbourne, and top order batsman Thilina Masmulla from overseas. “I’ve said from day one our top end talent is really good, but if we’re going to go anywhere it’s got to be the young guys like Mac Short and Declan O’Brien that really come up to speed,” Schuppan said. “Rather than having guys from a higher level coming down to us, these guys now have to step up and take their games to the next level, and I couldn’t be more impressed with the way they’ve gone about doing that.” While they finished agonisingly close to finals last year in fifth spot, Schuppan is more interested in getting the processes right rather than making finals this summer as the big goal for the club. “My big thing is to tick off a lot of boxes and get improvement in several areas,” he said. “Whether it’s not losing wickets in clumps, or having a guy win your batting average with something in the 40s instead of 25, if you tick
IN THE DOGHOUSE ■ We are all drawn to sport for a variety of reasons. Through time the reasons we stay involved change, but the passion is as real for an eight-year-old as it is for an 80-year-old. That is why sporting clubs are so important to the fibre of our local communities and why they should be helped financially and allowed to get on with what they do best, not bogged down in a sea of bureaucracy. I am sure this has been one of the reasons many people shy away from getting involved. Fortunately clubs do have hearty souls such as Igor and Eleanor Vivoda, of the Altona Vikings, who were rewarded for their tireless efforts with life membership last weekend. You would be hard-pressed to find a more deserving duo anywhere in local sport. As is usual with this calibre of person, each has performed many roles with the club over the years. Well done to both and to Altona for recognising them. ■ Albion Football Club is, contrary to popular belief, alive and well and heading into the 2019 season with a new coach and a plan to be competitive in division one. The club addressed the rumours regarding a request to be relegated to division two in 2019, stating it is committed and ready for the challenges of 2019. Some players have moved on, which happens every year, at every club. The Cats’ new coach Steve Lowerson will deal with that, with help from the committee and support personnel. Jono O’Brien, Todd Finco and James Thompson have signed with Springbank, where my old mate Steve Thom is newly appointed director of coaching. Good to see long-time Albion man Stephen Gibbs recently awarded life membership. He might lay claim to a special place in the WRFL with life membership at West Footscray as well. Any other dual lifers that you know of, let me know. ■ Not a very exciting weekend for local cricket but Caulfield Cup day is often one that attracts its share of washouts, as it has for many, many years. Gellibrand Cricket Club, in the Williamstown one-day competition, got off to a slow start in round one, losing to Werribee Centrals. Deer Park stalwarts Balshaw and Setterfield have kept the scorers busy with bat and ball. Spotswood welcomed Dan Christian to its T20 side earlier this week when it clashed with Laverton. Will let you know if he knocked one over the Laverton roof as he did at the Gabba a few years back in the next column.

all those little boxes along the way then the wins will generally take care of themselves. “If you’re winning you can reassess goals, but at the moment I’m not even worried about the
end result because it’s just too far away. “All I’m looking at now is Yarraville Club this week, what better way to test ourselves early in the year.”

Allan Wise has only been at Spotswood for a little over a year, but he’s already having a big impact. Aside from his stellar on-field contribution – collecting 33 wickets at 10.61 last year – the former first class cricketer, and Premier Cricket legend has been a huge boost for Spotswood’s campaign. Coach Dan Schuppan said his value went beyond wickets. “He’s been unbelievable,” Schuppan said. “You’re talking about a guy that’s played first class cricket for two states, Victoria and South Australia, taken over 500 premier first XI wickets, captained a couple of flags at Richmond/Monash Tigers. “To have that sort of experience come into

Seagulls ready to fly By Ewen McRae Newly re-appointed Williamstown VFLW coach Amy Catterall is already looking forward to 2019, after a positive finish to the club’s inaugural season. While the Seagulls struggled early in the season, they closed it out with three wins in a row to leave the group optimistic of a brighter season to come. Catterall, who was recently announced by the Seagulls as the continuing coach for next year, said there were lots of positives out of the season. “It was a good experience,” she said. “I was really proud of how the group stuck together throughout the season, and to win those three at the end was good reward and great to see everything that we’d been working towards come together. “We went through that journey together from the start of the year and you could really see that progression that they ended up achieving. “We started off as any new team would in their first year, and from there the bonus was that we got better as the season rolled on and we finished really strong, so it’s an exciting time for the side.” Williamstown knocked off Richmond in round 4 to get its first win in the competition, but then had to wait until round 14 to add to its tally, finishing with its best run of games for the year. While the Seagulls struggled at times, Jess Duffin was a standout player throughout the season and collected the league’s best and fairest award. She got great support throughout from Megan Williamson, Jacinta Reid and Sophie Van De Heuvel who were always among the best. Catterall identified the need for improved fitness if they wanted to take the next step in 2019. “I definitely need to get the group fitter next year, that will be a big focus when we get to pre-season,” she said. “The strength and conditioning side is becoming more important so we have to be better at that earlier in the season.” With the difficult first year out of the way, Catterall said expectations on the group would be lifted next year. “We’ll definitely be stepping things up now that they’ve proven they can play at the level,” she said. “The goals that we set at the start of the season were achieved by the end, so now we’ve got to step it up another level to keep up with everyone else and set some new goals and standards. “A lot of that will come down to our fitness and just natural improvement in our skills.”
Sports shorts NPL
The National Premier League Victoria will introduce a new structure for the 2020 season, with the current two-tier NPL system changed to a three-tier system, followed by the state leagues. From 2020, the top NPL grade will contain 14 sides, followed by two, 12-team grades. The second tier will be made up of the top six clubs from the previous years NPL2 east and west divisions, while the third tier competition will contain the bottom four from the current NPL2 east and west division, plus the top two from both State 1 east and west divisions.
Bowls
Altona lost to Essendon to remain winless after three rounds of the Premier Bowls season. Essendon walked away with a 91 (18) - 71 (0) victory. Altona has the chance to get on the winners’ list this week against fellow winless club Bundoora RSL. YarravilleFootscray split the points in their match with Whittlesea due to poor conditions. In division two pennant bowls, Williamstown pulled off a miraculous win over Rosamond despite winning just one rink for the day. Williamstown took the overall win by a single shot, 84 (12) - 83 (6) in a thriller. They will play Altona this week, with the chance to jump into the top four.
Baseball
Newport proved too strong for Malvern at the weekend. The Rams held the Braves to just two runs for 6-2. In division one women’s baseball, Footscray again had a good day with the bat, but was unable to contain Doncaster as the Dogs went down 12-8.
Cricket
Weekend rain played havoc with cricket across the west, with all Victorian Turf Cricket Association matches cancelled, along with most sub district and premier cricket matches. VTCA games have been rescheduled for later in the summer, while subbies and premier games will be played as one-dayers this weekend.
Jess Duffin was a standout player all year for Williamstown as she collected the league best and fairest medal. (Supplied)

Hammered Wolves maintain a winning outlook Williamstown fell to an uncommonly large defeat in Baseball Victoria summer league division 2 action at the weekend, but the side is confident of hitting back in coming weeks. Taking on Cheltenham, which was relegated from division 1 last season, the Wolves struggled to get their game going at any point as they were comprehensively outplayed in a 10-0 defeat. Williamstown pitcher Daniel Chircop said it was a rare thing for his side to go down in such a fashion, but he was hopeful it would prove a minor blip. “As long as I’ve been at the club we’ve been a winning side, so this was something different,” Chircop said. “Credit to Cheltenham – they’re a good outfit and their import pitched really well for them and didn’t let any of our hitters get comfortable. We just never got into a groove all day. “I think we’ll get some players back from now and have a really strong back half of the season. We should start firing pretty soon.” Chircop started on the mound for the Wolves. He was far from terrible, but his mistakes were
punished by the home side as it scored a run in the first inning and by the end of the third inning Cheltenham had stretched out to a sizeable lead When the Wolves’ turn came with the bat, they never found a rhythm, with no player making it to third base all match. The Wolves are 1-3 through the first four rounds, but Chircop said the return of key players in coming weeks would give his side the boost it needed for the rest of the summer. “Our import is back at home for a family wedding, and a couple of our better hitters are still making their way back from the off season,” he said. “So we’re disappointed, but we’re not 100 per cent shocked that we’re in the position that we’re in – and we’re not worried at the moment. “The goal for the last few years has been to get promotion to division 1. “Going into this year, we felt like we’d improved our playing list, so we’re still confident that we have it in us.”
