Ethiopian nightmare By Benjamin Millar

All Daniel Tadese wants is to be with his wife and child. But as his son prepares to mark his fourth birthday next week, there is no end in sight to the bureaucratic nightmare keeping the family apart. Mr Tadese, 48, is an Australian citizen of Ethiopian descent who has been living in Australia since 2007. Australian immigration officials accept that the West Footscray man is the father of Natnael Alemayehu and have accordingly granted the child citizenship by descent. Yet they continue to refuse to grant Mr Tadese’s wife, Genet Abebe, a partner visa on the basis of DNA testing undertaken in 2012. The testing suggested the statistical likelihood of the couple being biological half siblings, compared to unrelated individuals, is 66 to 1. The then Department of Immigration struck out the visa application, arguing the results constitute “moderately strong” evidence that the pair share the same mother. Speaking through an interpreter, Mr Tadese maintains that this is impossible as their families live in different parts of Ethiopia and had never met before their marriage. “I was really shocked – there is no relation whatsoever,” he said. “We met through her aunty, who lives in Melbourne, who I met through the church. “We started talking over the phone for a few months, then I went back to Ethiopia and we met personally and really liked each other. “So we had the wedding there and I came back here and started the process for her visa.” Mr Tadese said more than 200 guests attended the wedding ceremony in Addis Ababa in 2012. The marriage is accepted under Ethiopian law and Mr Tadese also points out that the Ethiopian Orthodox church, which performed the marriage, does not allow half siblings to marry. DNA testing is not a standard requirement of partner visa applications, but may be requested if the applicant and sponsor are suspected of being siblings. The 2012 tests were carried out by a company called Genetic Technologies, which has since been taken over by Genomic Diagnostics. Genomic Diagnostics business manager Brett Kennedy said the company could not comment on testing by a company that was not part of its group at the time. Mr Tadese said he has so far racked up more than $20,000 in legal fees challenging the

department’s decision. But the Administrative Appeals Tribunal last year affirmed the refusal, prompting Mr Tadese to make a final appeal to the Federal Circuit Court, for which he has been waiting more than a year for a hearing date. He said because DNA testing couldn’t provide a higher degree of certainty, the court should consider a wider range of supporting evidence. That view is backed by Monash University senior lecturer Maria O’Sullivan, who said she was unaware of any precedent cases in Australia. “I think the authorities should be looking at matters other than just DNA, as there is a slight chance that the test is incorrect,” Dr O’Sullivan said. The saga has now stretched on for more than six years, taking a heavy toll on Mr Tadese’s finances and mental health. He has been diagnosed with depression and said his phone conversations with his wife and son, who are in Addis Ababa, inevitably ended in tears. “I haven’t seen them for more than a year – I’m worried about my son growing up without really knowing me,” Mr Tadese said. “Every single time I call he asks, ‘When are we coming?’ – it’s so heartbreaking to hear that. “I’m on my own, I feel lost and I just don’t know what to do.” A spokesperson from the Department of Home Affairs said the department did not comment on individual cases for privacy reasons. Altona’s Esplanade makeover By Goya Dmytryshchak Parts of Altona’s Esplanade will be closed to cars and turned into a piazza-style space during summer. The Esplanade will be closed between Bent and Pier streets from December 15 to March 1. The 100-metre stretch of road between Altona Life Saving Club and Weaver Reserve will have tables and chairs, with seating spaces inspired by the Brighton beach boxes. Six parking spaces on the eastern side of Pier Street, between Queen Street and Altona Pines Fish and Chips, will be used for an extension of outdoor dining and bike racks.

Parking restrictions could be implemented for 12 parking spaces opposite, on the western side of Pier Street, to encourage quicker turnover and help offset the loss of parking. The trial follows discussions between Hobsons Bay council, Altona Life Saving Club and traders. Councillor Sandra Wilson said she was excited about activating the foreshore. “It really does activate the most precious part of Altona that’s very much loved and I think that it will deliver so much benefit.” Cr Tony Briffa said the move was a long-time coming, first mooted 10 years ago. “I think the community will love what’s going

to happen there over this period. I am glad that we’ve worked very collaboratively with the local traders and the Altona Life Saving Club about what we’ve got planned there. “We’re going to be activating that area so that area’s going to look absolutely amazing. “If people love the pop-up park in Yarraville … wait until they see what’s going to happen in Altona.” The council has allocated $150,000 in this year’s budget for the Altona beach precinct. The Esplanade closure was endorsed by councillors at last week’s council meeting. Community consultation will be conducted throughout the trial.

Indian, Russian and Italian communities to showcase an even wider range of cultural food, music, song and dance. Maribyrnong mayor Cuc Lam said the festival is a new listing on the festival calendar. “Our Macedonian community continues to grow, and this festival provides an opportunity for them to share their rich history,” she said. The Macedonian Food Festival will be at Footscray Park 10am-6pm Sunday, October 28.

Groundbreaking programs that have been kicking goals for health in the west have been given a welcome boost. Health Minister Jill Hennessy visited Laverton Community Hub on Tuesday to announce $800,000 in funding for the Western Bulldogs Community Foundation’s flagship Sons and Daughters of the West programs. The funding lift will enable 800 men and women living across the western suburbs to take part in the popular programs during the next three years. The Sons and Daughters of the West programs offer free sessions that help people to develop good mental health, improve their nutrition and increase their physical activity while also working towards gender equality and respectful relationships to assist in preventing family violence. The eight-week program has been specifically tailored to target the social and healthcare needs of people living in Melbourne’s culturally diverse western suburbs. Ms Hennessy said the programs made a real difference by giving people the skills and the confidence they needed to tackle the challenges life throws at them. “We know that men and women can grapple with problems such as mental health, social isolation, respect and gender equality,” she said. “We’re helping navigate these difficult issues so that they can be the best they can be.” Benjamin Millar

Footscray City Primary School pupils are taking big steps towards the healthy habits of a lifetime. They are joining thousands of kids across Victoria who are this month walking, riding or scooting to and from school as part of VicHealth’s Walk to School program. Teacher Anthony Curnow said the school has been encouraging parents of pupils who may not be able to walk all the way to school to park a few blocks away so they can walk the remainder of the way. The school has also been running a “weekly Wednesday warm-up”, in which students are encouraged to walk as many laps of the school oval as they can rack up from 8.30am. “It’s been really good, we had 30 to 40

children participate last Wednesday,” he said. “The idea is to build up healthy habits for life.” The pupils are using VicHealth charts to keep track of how much walking they are doing as part of the initiative. Mr Curnow said the school’s Walk to School activities will round out with two major events. “The first event is a ‘wacky walkathon’ on the last Wednesday of the month,” he said. “Kids will be asked to dress up in wacky attire – it is a student-led initiative.” The final event will be the mass arrival of students via walking school buses on Friday, November 2, followed by a breakfast picnic. Lead petitioner, marketing director Sash Boseovski, said traders had been suffering too long from the effect of high parking fees for 13 hours a day. Parking in Nelson Place – the only shopping strip in Hobsons Bay with meters – costs $3.50 per hour and operates from 9am-10pm.

The petition also calls on the council to allocate a marketing budget for Nelson Place from parking revenue, and to hire a consultant to analyse and compare Nelson Place meter fees with similar areas. “Fitzroy Street, St Kilda, has six months of parking at $1.80 during winter months and six months of parking at $3.80,” Mr Boseovski said. “When a council can understand the climate, they understand that winter months are a struggle. “If we’re looking at Nelson Place, Williamstown, being a restaurant precinct and if we’re comparing ourselves to other precincts: Point Cook Town Centre – free parking; Docklands – free parking; Watton Street, Werribee – free parking; Pier Street – free parking.” Mr Boseovski said high parking fees were deterring people from coming to Williamstown

More than 900 football, soccer and cricket players will benefit from nearly $1 million funding for sports facilities at Altona North and Williamstown. Sport Minister John Eren on Saturday announced Fearon Reserve in Williamstown and Paisley Park in Altona North would receive nearly $474,000 state government funds, with Hobsons Bay council contributing the rest to redevelop female-friendly changerooms. The reserves are used by Williamstown CYMS Football Club, Williamstown Seagulls FIDA Football Club, Williamstown CYMS Cricket Club, Williamstown Imperials Cricket Club, Altona Magic Soccer Club and Altona East Soccer Club. Williamstown MP Wade Noonan said he was shocked to find girls and women had been using a storage room to change at Paisley Park. “In today’s age that’s no longer acceptable and it’s left to all of us – multiple levels of government and sporting clubs – to create fit-for-purpose changerooms,” he said. A further $203,163 has been granted to upgrade the pavilion at Henry Turner North Reserve in Footscray to accommodate female players and umpires. The pavilion is home to the VU Western Spurs women’s football club, the Parkside Football Club and the Footscray Cricket Club, which have a total of more than 300 players – almost two thirds female.

Coronation Street visit lives on By Benjamin Millar When the stars of long-running British television serial Coronation Street hit Kingsville, bedlam ensued. On March 24, 1966, Arthur Leslie (Jack Walker), Doris Speed (Annie Walker) and Pat Phoenix (Elsie Tanner) arrived on the real-life Coronation Street to find 700 fans had defied inclement weather and crowded on to the cordoned-off street. Several residents had prepared welcome banners and signs and there was amusement as the actors met their namesakes, including an Annie Walker, of 90 Coronation Street, and a Jack Walker who also lived in the street. Observing that most of the crowd were women, Footscray mayor Matt Harris said it was a pity that the “menfolk” were at work and unable to greet the visitors. The details of the visit and the remainder of a 17-day Australian sojourn that took in Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide have been painstakingly detailed by St Albans researcher Adrian Schrober for an article in The La Trobe Journal, the official journal of the State Library of Victoria. Mr Schrober said he learned of the visit from his grandmother, who was living in Kingsville’s Coronation Street at the time of the 1966 visit, which coincided with the height of the serial’s popularity in Australia. “My grandmother was an important eyewitness – she described how the whole street was over-run with people,” he said. Curious to discover more, he went in search of more witnesses and news reports from the day, unearthing details about visits to Coronation streets in Kingsville and Sunshine North. Mr Schrober said he also received very useful

input from 3AW radio host Philip Brady, who had helped with the tour in his capacity as a Channel NIne personality at the time. “I have shared my article with a few elderly people who watched the television serial, and

there seems to be great nostalgic interest in the event,” he said. Mr Schrober said the reception for the actors on all their stops echoed the kind of adulation usually reserved for music stars like The Beatles.

“Coronation Street was extremely popular at the time – there was very little local competition in terms of Australian drama,” he said. Mr Schrober’s article is available online at slv. vic.gov.au.

RSL takes a punt on more pokies By Goya Dmytryshchak A bid by Altona RSL to take in 22 poker machines from the defunct Williamstown RSL Club is being opposed by Hobsons Bay council. Altona RSL has applied to the Victorian Commission for Gambling to increase the number of its electronic gaming machines (EGMs) from 58 to 80. Its application also proposes a $5.27 million renovation, including a new children’s play area and upgrading most other parts of the venue.

An officer’s report tabled at last week’s council meeting states that of the 535 machines in Hobsons Bay, nearly half (239) are in the Altona-Seaholme neighbourhood. Last financial year, punters lost $3.6 million on poker machines at Altona RSL. A report prepared by the club estimated that 22 more EGMs would lead to additional player losses of $3.45 million in the first year, bringing the total amount of money lost by punters to about $7.04 million. Councillor Tony Briffa said that while Altona

RSL’s contribution to Hobsons Bay was very much valued, its bid to increase EGMs must be opposed. “The increase alone for these additional machines – we’re talking about an increase of $3.5 million within the first 12 months, so that’s an additional $3.5 million that people will be sinking into those machines,” Cr Briffa said. “It’s actually promoting a disease, and an issue to people and it adversely impacts families.”

Councillor Peter Hemphill said while he too valued the contribution of the RSL, it was time for Anzac House to “wean its RSL clubs off poker machines just like the AFL’s trying to do”. “I think it’s time for Anzac House to really stand up and reflect what the people in the community really want and that’s these machines to be curtailed somewhat,” he said. The remaining 20 machines from the former Williamstown RSL Club are scheduled to be transferred to other RSLs outside Hobsons Bay.

Feeling sheepish Ewe wouldn’t believe it. Hobsons Bay council is trying to reunite a sheep with its owner after the animal wandered into a workplace in Altona’s Maidstone Street last week. The sheep was found wearing a red collar and appears to be a well cared-for pet, a council spokeswoman said. “Council received a report that a sheep was found unattended in Altona,” she said. “Our animal management officers immediately arrived at the location and took the sheep to a local veterinarian for a health check, which the sheep passed with flying colours. “The sheep, which is being cared for by council officers, is in excellent condition and is very friendly. “It appears to be someone’s pet and we are actively looking for its owner. “I’m sure it is looking forward to going home so, if anyone has any information that

Leading light in learning Williamstown’s Lumineer Academy has been recognised as a world leader in education by global authority, the Finnish not-for-profit HundrED. While policy makers and politicians from around the world often look to Finland for inspiration on improving their schools, the organisation has been studying what’s happening in Victorian classrooms. Last year, HundrED, which receives funding from the Finnish government, chose the “education state” as its first location for a new project that identified Lumineer among 10 leaders. The private Lumineer Academy in Williamstown, co-founded by Silicon Valley entrepreneur Susan Wu and principal Amanda Tawhai, uses the Luminaria Education Model aimed at preparing children for the future. “In education, our work is to shape human beings who go on to shape society,” Ms Tawhai said. “We can think of no greater issue or problem to work on that can universally benefit humankind. We aim to equip our children to be prepared for any version of the future world and to be highly capable and compassionate builders of that world.” HundrED partnered with the Melbourne-based Education Changemakers, which runs teacher training, to assess the state’s best initiatives. Education Changemakers programs director Louka Parry said the Lumineer Academy was a worthy inclusion. “What is really interesting about Lumineer Academy is that they are trying to do it all simultaneously,” he said. “This is a model where they have tried to

Warehouse fire probe ongoing Mystery continues to surround what chemicals were being stored at the site of the massive blaze that tore through a warehouse near West Footscray in August. More than six weeks after the inferno sent a plume of smoke across the city and devastated nearby Stony Creek, authorities are yet to reveal either the cause of the fire or a precise description of what materials were on site. Victoria Police arson and explosive squad detectives have been investigating how the fire began since the MFB declared the cause as potentially suspicious. A police spokesman said there were no further updates and the investigation remained ongoing. The Environment Protection Authority Victoria is scheduling on-site sampling this week to gain a clearer idea of exactly what chemicals were being stored in the asbestos-riddled warehouse. The clean-up and recovery plan for Stony Creek is being led by Melbourne Water, with input from the EPA, Maribyrnong council, Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning and Parks Victoria. Melbourne Water general manager of waterways and land, Tim Wood, said about 70 million litres of contaminated water has been pumped from Stony Creek and 170 cubic metres of contaminated sediment removed directly downstream of the fire site. All the fun of the fair Expect a full day of fun fit for a king when one of the inner west’s biggest community events gets underway this Saturday. Kingsville Primary School’s biennial Community Fete will feature a host of carnival rides alongside face-painting, cupcake decorating and sideshow alley games. How the West Gate Bridge Changed Workplace Safety Forever An interview with Art & Industry Festival Symposium Speaker, Pat Preston A two hundred strong crowd gathered under the span of the West Gate Bridge in Douglas Parade in Spotswood last Monday 15 October, to remember the 35 workers who lost their lives on the same day in 1970. Former West Gate Bridge rigger and crane operator Pat Preston said how heartening it was to see so many young people attending the event, 48 years after Australia’s worstever workplace catastrophe, which claimed the lives of more the half the men working on that side of the bridge at the time. “Those of us who were there on the day are becoming fewer and fewer,” he said, “and it’s really important that we continue to honour their memory.” Pat was 29 years old the day the Bridge came down and was among the survivors who returned two years later to complete the now famous Melbourne icon, which opened to traffic on 15 November 1978. While Pat remains forever changed by the events of that day, it inspired a life-long commitment to workplace safety. Many of the safety initiatives now entrenched on Australia worksites, he put in place during

the final construction stage of the West Gate Bridge, years ahead of the passing of the Victorian Health and Safety Act (1985). “I wanted to make sure that, across the country, everyone who turned up for work on a building site would be able to go back home to their family at the end of the day,” he said at the service. Nearly half a century on, Pat would like to think an accident like this couldn’t happen today. “Workers are more aware of health and safety and we’ve got legislation in place, but it doesn’t take much on an unorganised job for safety to be ignored,” he said. “We need to keep fighting for safe workplaces.” Pat Preston is a guest speaker at the Art & Industry ‘How to Build Bridges’ Symposium on Friday 23 November from 10:00am to 6:00pm at the Substation in Newport. While rapid technology changes led to a boom in large-scale graphic-driven games within the multi-billion dollar industry, independent designers can still carve out a home for smaller-scale creations. Seddon video game developer Ian MacLarty has happily stepped into this space, gaining a dedicated following for a steady stream of creative new games. MacLarty said a 20-year career in IT has provided the know-how, while a life-long interest in art has inspired the creative side. “Making games brings together a lot of different disciplines; I really enjoy the creative side of the visuals and music as well,” he said. A man who arrived in Australia from Chile before he turned one has avoided deportation for family violence offences. Julio Cesar Pizarro, who was arrested at Altona North, has had the cancellation of his visa overturned by the Administrative Appeals Tribunal of Australia. The tribunal heard Mr Pizarro, 45, made full admissions to sending threatening text messages to his ex-partner in contravention of an intervention order (IVO). The tribunal heard his ex-partner, known as SP, wrote to the minister’s department in April expressing concern that Mr Pizzaro could be released from immigration detention on Christmas Island. “All I can say is that I am terrified of him being released into the public as I will demonstrate,” she wrote. “I have over 2000 text messages threatening to kill me and in breach of the restraining order. “These messages threatened to cut me up in to pieces and bury me interstate. “Others told me I would swim with the fishes.” Her letter detailed further incidents from “over a decade of torture and torment”. In revoking the cancellation of Mr Pizarro’s visa, tribunal deputy president Stephanie Forgie said she was satisfied he was “not a danger to the Australian community as a whole”. “He has behaved in the past in a way that is in breach of IVOs, but the work that he has done on his behaviour and the knowledge that another offence is likely to lead to his visa being cancelled, leads me to conclude that the risk of Mr Pizarro’s breaching an IVO is greatly reduced,” Ms Forgie said. “If he does breach an IVO, the risk of physical harm to SP is low and to the children very much lower if at all.”

Mary Wong has made a remarkable recovery after suffering a stroke. (Supplied)

After suffering a stroke that left her unable to walk last year, Newport nurse Mary Wong has made a remarkable recovery. On Sunday, she ran 10 kilometres in the Melbourne Marathon. In January last year, Ms Wong’s life changed in an instant. The 51-year-old said she was busy at home and at work, while training for triathlons, when she had a stroke. “I then found myself in a hospital ward where I had to learn to balance and walk again,” Ms Wong said. “Most days were filled with headaches, fatigue and frustration.” She spent six months in recovery before her first attempt to return to work. “I couldn’t concentrate, so I had to give myself more time to heal,” Ms Wong said. “I

also experienced self doubt, but mindfulness, meditation and the support of a wonderful family and medical team were a huge help. “If you’d asked me 18 months ago whether I would be in this position to run 10 kilometres after my stroke, I would not have believed you, but here I am.” Her next goal is a half marathon in December. Stroke Foundation chief executive Sharon McGowan said with the right treatment many could return to a normal life after a stroke. “Recovering from a stroke can be a long and extremely difficult journey, impacting not only the survivor but their loved ones too,” she said.

VU students keen to be kind By Benjamin Millar More than 300 Victoria University staff and student volunteers rolled up their sleeves last Friday as part of VU’s annual volunteering blitz. Now in its eighth year, V4U Day drew volunteers from all VU campuses and areas of study to help out on 26 projects across Melbourne’s western suburbs. Volunteers helped to paint, clean, craft, garden and more, joining with partners including AMES, Red Cross, Amnesty International, the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre and local schools and aged care homes.

Nawaf Kandeerally spent the day helping fix up old bikes at the Footscray Community Bike Shed, a Rotary-run project repairing donated bicycles to provide for free to children and those most in need. “This is such an amazingly positive and rewarding event, it is a very good thing to give back to the community,” he said. The second year bachelor of business student enjoyed last year’s V4U Day so much he was keen to be back on board again as a team leader. “Being an international student, it’s good to get involved and get experience in the Australian environment,” he said. “Volunteering is good for learning time

management and skills and a great way to build friendships.” Meanwhile, VU Polytechnic will tonight present its inaugural Charity Dinner, a degustation menu prepared by renowned chefs Ian Curley and Todd Moses working alongside cookery and hospitality students. All profits will be donated to the anti-bullying Brodie’s Law Foundation. VU has also turned its attention to helping students cope with exams and final assignments. This week’s Stress Less Festival includes a technology-driven ‘scream booth’ and ‘therapy dogs’ visiting the Footscray Park library.

Green thumbs dig deep Volunteers tending the community vegetable garden at Altona’s Louis Joel Arts and Community Centre last week received a helping hand from Bunnings Warehouse staff. They planted herbs and vegies, mulched garden beds and installed bee “hotels” to attract the pollinators during National Gardening Week. Centre manager Kim Reilly said the garden started as a Work for the Dole project. “We still have volunteers maintain it all, but people from the community can come in and access herbs or any vegies that are going,” she said. “We have one lady from the community who always comes in and gets her rhubarb from our garden.” Volunteers also maintain a flower garden at the front of the arts centre.

“We welcome anyone else who’d like to come in because the size of the garden is just huge and the volunteers get a little bit overwhelmed with how much needs to be done,” she said. “We’re very grateful for any support from organisations like Bunnings because a community centre like this, we can’t afford to pay gardeners. “We rely on our volunteer workforce and we also rely on organisations like Bunnings coming in to give us a hand.” For information about volunteering call 9398 2511. MY PLACE Musician Michael Zammit is launching his debut CD featuring his favourite songs in support of a charity supporting families of children with autism. He speaks with Goya Dmytryshchak. What’s your connection to Hobsons Bay?

Can you tell me about your debut CD?

I was born and brought up in Altona and have lived in Altona and Altona Meadows all my life. I have owned and operated Airwaves Recording Studio for 31 years in Altona Meadows.

The recording of my debut CD, Michael Zammit @ 50, was inspired by my late father. He and mum encouraged me to follow my dream, and after being 30 years behind a mixing console I decided to get behind a microphone and record an album of songs of my favorite artists. The artists that I’ve recorded on the album are artists like Rod Stewart, Neil Diamond, Bon Jovi, Creedence Clearwater Revival and David Essex. David Essex sent me a message congratulating me for recording his song, Hold me Close, and commending me on my chosen charity for my CD launch, being Autism Advisory and Support Service. I’ve got a couple of dear friends of mine with children that have autism and I just kind of thought that would be the one for me because I’m pretty close to these guys and just watching their children grow up … obviously with autism there’s been a bit of a challenge for the families and the kids as well.

I love the community and the multicultural diversity we have. The cafes, the beach, the venues and, most of all, the people that I grew up with that are still in the area. What would you change? There is really nothing I would change. I just love it here. What’s your favourite local cafe or eatery and why? My favorite local cafe would have to be Pier 71. They have amazing food and service, and two of my dear friends own it. Can you tell me about your passion for music? I have grown up around music. My late father and uncle were in the music industry for years. I knew from a young age that this was my path in life and am lucky enough to follow that dream. I have worked in it all my life and now my two boys are heading in the same direction. It’s been an amazing journey.

What’s something people would be surprised to know about you? I love carpentry and very much look forward to new projects. CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir welcomes a new kid on the block Lucy Dinknesh is dead; long live Lucy Dinknesh. The much-loved Ethiopian stalwart of the Footscray eats scene has closed its doors. Doubtless that will leave a hole impossible to fill for its many fans. But House of Injera â€“ at the same address â€“ is giving it a good shake. Based on the mostly excellent food we eat during a mid-week visit â€“ and the happy tables around us â€“ House of Injera is destined to be a hit. But this is a rather different enterprise. Itâ€™s the first restaurant adventure for the team of Wes and Brod Jackson and Messe Berhe, with the latter (mum of Wes) doing all the cooking. The dining room is a rather chic delight, with low-fi lighting (but still bright enough to see our food), plain yet fetching wooden tables, cushions scattered around and Ethiopian art work adorning the walls. The pungent tang of incense and funky Ethiopian sounds â€“ some even familiar to Bennie and I from my slim collection of Ethio music â€“ are comfort-inducing in a swell way. The House Of Injera menu is a simple, well-written list featuring many dishes with which we are familiar. Though there are a few wrinkles along the way. One is the inclusion of kikel seg, the meat and vegetable soup we adore. My choice is soup, but I let Carnivore Boy Bennie bully me into ordering the lamb ribs. Our lamb ribs ($15) look the part and

HOUSE OF INJERA Address: 227 Barkly Street, Footscray Phone: 9687 8644 constitute a generous serve. Unfortunately, we find them to be extremely fatty. Much better are the tibbs-style lamb cubes, onion, carrot and their juices on which the ribs are presented. We order the mistro combo at $20 each â€“ and are knocked-out happy to find it includes a small bowl each of aforementioned kikel seg soup. It is excellent â€“ and thereâ€™s a heap of on-the-bone meat submerged in our bowls. We think of it as the Ethiopian take on pho or Jewish penicillin/chicken soup. The rest of our mistro line-up includes wonderful renditions of khay wat, gomen sega and the familiar, always-welcome Ethio mix of beetroot and spuds. The meat in the beef stew that is khay wat is cooked down and easy to eat. The greens of gomen sega come with another wrinkle â€“ more tender on-the-bone meat. Weâ€™re far from complaining, as thereâ€™s more food served to us than we can eat, but instead of five dishes as part of our mistro combo, we have been served four. No problem at all â€“ and our bill is adjusted accordingly. House of Injera is warmly recommended by CTS.

his love affair with the Prahran bowling attack. Russ scored a hundred in round one last season against Prahran and he backed it up with a classy 105 in Sunday’s clash. The Dogs racked up 6-246 from their 50 overs before a standout bowling performance saw the True Blues dismissed for just 134. While Prahran’s openers put on a 76-run stand to start its innings, Lucas Dredge (3-25) and Winter-Irving (3-24) took their moments as the innings rolled on to deliver the Dogs win No.1 for the summer. Nell said Russ’s innings was from the very top drawer, with the win giving the Dogs some momentum to take forward. “He’s a terrific player, very experienced, and very proud to represent Footscray for so long and always give 100 per cent, which is wonderful,” he said. “He’s putting up big numbers early in the season and looks ready for another big summer. “We’ve got four new players in our side early in the year, so it’s a different dynamic from last year … it’s a case of the boys getting used to each other and their roles in the side. “I think that’s starting to happen now and we’re ready to push on with that from here.”

It really could have gone either way and this time it went theirs. “After winning the flag last year, all the sides are going to be out to hunt you, so realistically we have to be 10 to 15 per cent better than we were last year. “Everything has to go up a cog now and we really need to lift.” Skip Dane McKinnon had a good win in his rink (22-14), while Brett Foley played out an epic match with Deer Park’s Brett Mahoney in the final rink of the night, ultimately coming up short (22-16). With scores all square with five ends to play, it came down to some experience in the conditions. Deer Park used its home rink knowledge to full effect to take crucial shots late to claim the win.

With his side sitting 0-2 to start the summer, Loughlin said the players needed to find the missing ingredients soon if they were going to push for success later in the season. “We head to Essendon now, which has been a bit of a graveyard for us in recent years, so our backs are firmly against the wall,” he said. “We’ve got to work out a way to go 1-2 instead of 0-3, because it’s a long way back if you drop the first three games. “We’ve had a couple of players out the first couple of weeks and you only need to be five per cent off in this competition and you get found out … I think that’s all we are off by. “I’m quietly confident we can turn things around.” Ewen McRae

could not think of a better match than Adam Contessa and the Sunshine Kangaroos. There is a buzz around Kinder Smith Reserve and rightly so as they have landed a good one. They needed to as Barney Hallinan left big shoes to fill. Adam has great credentials as a coach but more important is what he brings to the club as a successful person. He has plenty of football and cricket flags to boast of but he won’t because that is not what he is about. Sunshine went within a kick in 2017 of the ultimate and dropped out of calculations in 2018, but I expect the Kangaroos will bounce back in a big way in 2019.

By Ewen McRae A century opening stand has guided St Albans to a huge win in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association senior division opener, knocking off reigning premier Yarraville Club on Saturday. Chasing down the Clubbers 7-223 from last week, St Albans could not have asked for a better start as openers Brenton Cook and Simon Lambert laid the perfect platform with a 123-run partnership to start the day, allowing the middle order the freedom to chase down the target with plenty of time to spare, though not without some nervous moments. The Saints eventually reached the target in the 72nd over, finishing on 8-223. Cook and Lambert took up the challenge with aplomb, with Cook the aggressor while Lambert was more patient. Will Sheridan was his usual tidy self with the new ball for the visitors, however Joseph Blake took some early punishment at the other end, with his four overs costing 26-runs and getting St Albans off to a good start. Cook hit eight boundaries and two big sixes in his knock of 71 off just 104 balls, but when he was trapped in front by Adam Contessa (1-22) the visitors started to get back into the contest. From 0-123, St Albans slipped to 5-161, with Chathura Darshana (4-85 off 26 overs) doing some damage. Lambert was the third man out for a vital 60. While the Clubbers had a sniff of a comeback win, a pair of 20s from Pawandeep Singh and captain Tom Langley-Dunn were enough to guide the Saints home and give them their first win in the top tier. Elsewhere, a pair of 80s to Seddon batsmen Duleeka Thisakuttige and John Taylor was not enough to deliver them a win over local rivals Spotswood as the runs flowed on both days at Donald McLean Reserve. Chasing Spotswood’s 5-311 from week one, Seddon were on the back foot early as Ben Speake (5) departed cheaply. Damith Priyadarshana (40) got the innings going with some quick early runs, and when he was dismissed it was Arkii Van Wills (27) who gave support to Thisakuttige. However, a couple of quick wickets to Spotswood turned the game in its favour. Thisakuttige was eventually dismissed for 84 with more than 100 runs still needed for the win, and when Taylor was run out for 80 the task proved too great for the tail. Spotswood was well served with the ball by Allan Wise, Gene Maurice and Matthew Sazenis, who picked up two wickets each. Seddon will host Strathmore and Spotswood will travel to Keilor for this week’s first one-dayer of the season.

coaching ranks of the VFL in the west are certainly impressive with the announcement of Daniel Giansiracusa as the new Footscray VFL coach, joining Mark Williams (Werribee), Andy Collins (Williamstown) and Gary Ayres (Port Melbourne). That is a select club where you need a minimum of 200 AFL games to be a part of it. Add numerous premierships as both player and coach, best and fairest awards and other achievements like Norm Smith medals and you have an amazing knowledge and experience base for young players to be developed.

Altona’s stuttering start to its premiership defence continued at the weekend as it went down to Deer Park. Taking on Deer Park at its indoor home under lights on Friday night, Altona fought hard all game, but was unable to come up with the shots when it counted late. Tough win seals squash star’s rising reputation

Dylan Molinaro won his first national squash championship in straight games, but he said it was far harder than the scoreline indicated. The Williamstown 16 year-old was last month crowned the Australian-under 17 champion following a gruelling tournament in Darwin, and while the final’s 11-3, 11-5, 11-8 scoreline against top seed Sam Sergo pointed to a one-sided match, Molinaro said that was not the case. “I certainly didn’t expect to win like that,” Molinaro said. “I’d done a lot of work with my coaches on getting faster and stronger, and that definitely helped when the match got tough. “This is a tournament I looked at at the start of the year and wanted to win, so to do that was a great feeling. I came through a lot of tough competitors and a very talented draw, so it was

tough just to get to the final: I was very relieved to win the title.” While Sergo breezed his way through the preliminary games, Molinaro endured back-to-back five-game matches in the quarterand semi-finals, which prepared him for the biggest match of his career. “It was tough all the way,” he said. “I was seeded second so there were some tough games throughout. “But it also meant I got more court time than my opponent in the final, so I feel like I was a bit more experienced and understood the court conditions a bit better. “In Melbourne, the ball dies a lot on the court. But in Darwin, it bounces more and keeps going, so you’ve got to be prepared for the longer rallies and have the endurance to keep going.”

Now ranked No.2 in Australia for his age group, Molinaro has been steadily building a reputation as one of the rising stars of the sport, and will now set his sights on two upcoming junior tournaments and a potential berth in national colours. “My coaches have been working with me on not focusing on the end result, but just getting the process right,” he said. “I’m hoping to do well in the Oceania Junior Championships and the Australian Junior Open early next year, and then hopefully play in the Trans Tasman team – a Test match against New Zealand. “Representing my country would be awesome – I really hope I can make that squad and experience that.” Ewen McRae

After being sent in by Laverton, the Druids’ top five all made solid starts to guide their side to 6-207 from their 40 overs, with Shane Windridge (51) and Michael Hay (44) the standout performers. Their efforts with the ball were led by Indika Gallage (4-24) and Steven Nicholson (3-7) as Laverton was rolled for 69 in 25 overs.

The Footscray women’s side grabbed its first win of the division 1 summer season at the weekend, proving too strong for Springvale in a high-scoring and entertaining match. After scoring 10 runs in a losing cause in round one, Footscray again showed off its hitting power, running in 12 runs in Saturday’s match for a 12-8 win. The two sides will face off again this weekend.

Altona looks long-term By Ewen McRae Altona may have kicked off its Victorian Sub District Cricket season with a loss at the weekend, but the club is viewing it as the first of many steps towards competing at the top end again. While Altona’s new look and youthful side struggled to contain Elsternwick’s batters in a one-dayer on Saturday, coach Craig Swan said this year was seen by the club as a rebuilding year and it would have to deal with some fluctuations in performance. “I personally see this team as a 16 to 17-game plan to bed down what we want, which is obviously more than a season but it’s about understanding this young playing group,” Swan said. “We didn’t execute our bowling plans too well, and our fielding lacked a bit of intensity,

so we were probably chasing 35 to 40 runs more than we would have liked. And with a young side that always makes it tough. “On the whole there’s lots of things to take away and learn from, finding ways to resurrect our game as it starts to slip away, but I think there were some positive signs for the season.” After winning the toss and sending the Wicks in to bat, Altona struggled to find the right lines and lengths with the ball as the visitors made full use of a short boundary to one side of the pitch. Jeremy Swan (2-38) grabbed the first wicket, but the next four Elsternwick batsmen all got healthy runs at a good strike rate to keep the pressure on the home bowlers. Stefan Sidari was the only other bowler to take a wicket for Altona picking up 2-44, as Elsternwick posted 5-211 from its 45 overs. In reply, Altona got off to a steady start

through experienced pair Greg Sheehan and David Kinsella, but struggled to keep up with the required run rate as the Wicks bowlers held to strong lines and cut off every run in the field. Altona would go on to lose wickets in clumps throughout the afternoon, and despite a gutsy 38 not out from Daniel Mackenzie it was eventually dismissed for 129 with five overs to spare. Swan said while it is never good to drop the opening game, he was confident of some better results in coming games. “We know we’ve got the talent there, it’s about harnessing that and getting the best out of it,” he said. “We’ve lost about 700 runs from our batting order from last year, so a lot of this year is getting games into people and working on the mental side of the game to implement structures that will bring success down the track.”

In men’s division 2 action, Newport was made to work hard against Doncaster but eventually prevailed in another high-scoring contest. Newport’s batters were on song throughout the match, bringing home 13 runners, but Doncaster kept pace for much of the day to keep things interesting. The Rams eventually triumphed 13-9 to keep their unbeaten season rolling. Williamstown let a lead slip late in its clash with Port Melbourne, going down 5-4. Williamstown led 3-2 entering the eighth inning, but three runs to the visitors proved enough to secure the win. The Wolves are sixth, with one win from the first three rounds.

Bowls

Williamstown has grabbed its first win of the division 2 pennant bowls season, securing a tense victory over Maribyrnong Park on Saturday. While the two sides split the rinks evenly, Williamstown’s wins gave it the shots advantage it needed to take the match 87 (14)-71 (4). Elsewhere, Altona Sports seconds had a good day against Port Melbourne ones, taking a 92 (16)-76 (2) win to maintain an unbeaten start to the summer. Altona’s twos secured a narrow win over Melton, splitting the rinks but taking the win by five shots.
