Creek still in crisis By Benjamin Millar The slow road to recovery has begun for Stony Creek as the fall-out from the West Footscray fire continues to plague the inner west. Toxic chemicals and firefighting foam flooded the creek late last month as crews battled to extinguish the out-of-control warehouse fire, killing thousands of fish, eels and other marine life. Hundreds of people responding to a survey by western suburbs Greens MP Huong Truong in the wake of the fire reported health impacts including migraines, nose bleeds and sore throats. The state government last week allocated $1 million to help Melbourne Water and the EPA with clean-up and monitoring, as concerned residents rallied on the steps of Parliament calling for more urgent action.

“As adults we can forget to look at what children are going through,” she said. “It may be a long time before we see and hear pobblebonk frogs back here, but we want to be part of a concerted effort to support their return.” Maribyrnong council chief executive

Stephen Wall has promised to include the service’s input in the recovery plan for Stony Creek. The council has become the lead agency in the recovery process, exposing it to mounting recovery costs. Mr Wall said most costs have so far been

absorbed in the council budgets, but the financial hit could substantially escalate. “While it is difficult to estimate the costs going forward, we will seek funding from state government,” he said. Investigations into the cause of the fire are continuing.

After pumping out more than 70 million litres of contaminated water, Melbourne Water this week began the laborious task of pressure washing banks and rocks to remove contaminated material and affected vegetation and soil. Warnings remain in place for people and animals to avoid Stony Creek and Cruickshank Park in Yarraville, a situation that has devastated children and educators at Claire Court Children’s Service, situated near the bank of the creek. Service director Sharon Jordan said detailed information has been impossible to find and messages around health and safety have been contradictory and confusing. “Our children are in and out all day and it has been really challenging getting information about whether it is safe to be outside,” she said. Ms Jordan said the service was hit hard by the contamination as the park and creek are central to the fun and learning for the 300 children who attend the service. “Since the fire we haven’t been able to go out to the park and the creek,” she said. “The children have been saddened as they have built strong relationships with the environment.” Ms Jordan said the children were putting out fresh water for birds and wildlife impacted by the creek’s contamination and hatching their own ideas to help the creek recover.

Crime figures fall in inner west By Benjamin Millar and Goya Dmytryshchak The inner-west community is the safest it has been for close to a decade, according to new data showing the crime rate continuing to fall. Maribyrnong and Hobsons Bay’s overall crime rate dropped 4.5 per cent per cent in the 12 months to the end of June – from 8687 to 8296 offences in Maribyrnong and from 6325 to 6042 in Hobsons Bay. The results continue a two-year downward trend, marking Maribyrnong’s lowest rate of

crime in the decade of data held by the Crime Statistics Agency. Hobsons Bay’s crime rate is the lowest since 2011. Crimes against the person rose in both areas, however, from 916 to 994 in Maribyrnong and 938 to 951 in Hobsons Bay. Hobsons Bay Inspector Peter O’Connor said many of the crimes against the person were family violence related. “We do encourage the reporting of and are supportive of the reporting of family violence assaults,” he said. “People are feeling more comfortable in

coming to the police and reporting those matters, which is a good indication. “People feel more at ease and feel like they can actually come to us.” Footscray Inspector Adrian Healy said the 741 residential burglaries in Maribyrnong was the lowest number since 1993. “We are doing a lot of proactive patrolling and targeting repeat offenders,” he said. Inspector Healy said the overall reduction was welcome, but the rise in the number of assaults from 524 to 573 and robberies from 110 to 116 was worrying.

“I would always encourage people to report any suspicious activity and will increase our patrols in the area,” he said. Hobsons Bay property and deception offences dropped from 3923 to 3716, including burglaries down from 542 to 458 and theft down from 2358 to 2258. Inspector O’Connor said he encourages people to make sure they look after their own security at home and lock up their premises. “Some people by mistake leave their back doors open, there’s a lot of entry by back doors at night.”

For all creatures great and small Holy Trinity Anglican Church in Williamstown will bless dogs, cats and all other of God’s creatures at its annual St Francis of Assisi Day service. Reverend Bill Beagley said St Francis was the patron saint of creation and of all animals. “So, the church has acknowledged the value and the wonder and the beauty of animals on his particular feast day,” he said. “People bring their pets and animals to the 10 o’clock service and I move about amongst them during the service and I give each animal a blessing … a blessing of, God loves you too and thank you for giving value to our lives.” While the most commonly blessed animals are cats and dogs, Reverend Beagley has blessed a tortoise, rabbit, guinea pig and lizard The St Francis of Assisi Day service is from 10am on Sunday October 7, at 2 Pasco Street, Williamstown.

Into the swing of things Supporters came out swinging last week as the Sweeney Real Estate Charity Golf Day went to a tee. Now in its 10th year, the annual fundraiser for Ronald McDonald House brought more than 130 participants to Sunshine Golf Club for a four-person ambrose competition. Footscray Sweeney director Bianca Spagnolo said the day raised more than $2000 for Ronald McDonald House, a non-profit organisation that helps seriously ill children and their families. Williamstown Sweeney director Wayne

Sweeney said the event is a continuation of the agency’s long-running support for the charity. “It was sold out in 48 hours which is just amazing, it’s getting bigger and bigger,” he said. “We’re involved with their annual ball in the city as well, [director] Darren Dean is usually the auctioneer on the night, which raises well over $1 million.” Star Weekly real estate sales director Jack Gillespie said his team has been supporting the fundraiser for a number of years. Chee’s tale a big grinner By Goya Dmytryshchak Laverton’s Todd Perry has fostered more than 100 dogs awaiting adoption, but it was the story of how he fell in love with a rescued Doberman named Chee that propelled him to the big screen. The tale captured the attention of Altona filmmaker Rose Damon, whose short film, Chee’s Story, won the Altona Beach Film Festival’s main award and people’s choice. Chee’s previous owners took him to the vet at seven months old to be put down because he had mange, a very treatable condition. The vet took Chee to All 4 Paws Dog Rescue at Altona Meadows, where Todd volunteers. “Chee’s care just came in the form of medicated baths and treatments instead of plays and walks,” Todd said. “The only thing about Chee was that his recovery took so long and once he was ready for adoption there was no way we could physically part with each other. “I’ve fallen in love with over 50 per cent of the dogs I foster – don’t get me wrong – but with Chee, he had never had someone treat him nicely in any capacity before and he was so respondent to it and he was so emotionally reliant on me. “He’d already come through so much and overcome so much in his short life … if he had gone to another home, that would have just been another setback for him and he didn’t deserve that.” Ms Damon came across Todd and Chee while researching local dog rescues so she could become a foster carer. “I actually came across a Facebook post by Todd celebrating that he had been with Chee for about a year,” she said. “In that post, he had put a before and after photo showing just

Todd Perry and Rose Damon with Chee. (Supplied)

how decimated and sick Chee had been and the incredible recovery that he had made to become this happy healthy dog. “I was absolutely shattered when I saw how ill and badly treated Chee was and I was just really moved by the clear love and compassion that Todd has.

“Basically, it stayed with me for a few days – I couldn’t get it out of my head.” Ms Damon, who has become an All 4 Paws volunteer herself, hopes the film would encourage others to consider fostering dogs. To see the film visit: https://www.facebook. com/All4PawsDogRescue/

Sport scores high for VU Victoria University’s Sport Science program is powering up the global rankings, jumping nine places to be ranked 12th in the world. ShanghaiRanking’s global ranking of sport science schools and departments, published last Friday, showed Victoria University was in the top dozen of more than 300 universities with sport-related units around the globe. University of Copenhagen in Denmark topped the ranking for the first time, followed by the Norwegian School of Sport Sciences. Professor Hans Westerbeek, VU pro-vice chancellor (sport strategy), said the high ranking reflects VU’s groundbreaking research and partnerships with some of the world’s top sporting clubs and organisations. Victoria University has major partnerships with clubs including Western Bulldogs, Melbourne Victory and Real Madrid, as well as bodies Sport Australia, Australian Institute of Sport, Tennis Australia and Victorian Institute of Sport. It carries out research collaborations with a range of organisations including the AFL, FIFA and national bodies in a range of sports. “Our research capability and world-leading facilities mean that professional clubs and organisations get huge value from their partnerships with us,” Professor Westerbeek said. Lucy leads the charge By Goya Dmytryshchak An 11-year-old Altona Meadows pupil has petitioned VicRoads and Hobsons Bay council to reduce the speed limit outside her school. Lucy collected 172 signatures from parents, students, teachers and local residents calling for safety improvements to two children’s crossings in Queen Street, near Victoria Street, outside Queen of Peace Parish Primary School.

New rules for hazard zoning

Because I feel unsafe, I wanted to do something - Lucy about it

’’

The petition, tabled at this month’s council meeting, raises concerns about the proximity of the crossings to a roundabout, the lack of safe pedestrian crossing opportunities across Queen Street outside school peak times, and high speeds in Queen and Victoria streets. “I had experienced a few unsafe incidents when I was walking or riding to school, and cars have often driven straight through on Victoria and Queen streets near the roundabout and crossing,” Lucy said. “Because I feel unsafe, I wanted to do something about it. And also, because I really love walking and riding, I felt I should do something about it. “Some cars can often go too fast.” Councillor Colleen Gates said signage and line-marking upgrades had been immediately programmed in response to the petition. She said the council would lobby VicRoads to reduce the speed limit to 40 km/h on Queen and Victoria streets during school peak times. The council will also call on VicRoads

to move the crossings further from the Victoria Street roundabout and investigate an additional pedestrian crossing in Queen Street, such as a zebra crossing or pedestrian-operated signals. “It is appreciated that Lucy has taken the

time and initiative to gather this petition,” Cr Gates said. “The local community has been raising this issue for many years now and we implore VicRoads to listen to the community’s concern and react with urgency.”

WorkSafe Victoria and the industry and employment minister must be consulted before land near a major hazard facility (MHF) can be rezoned for housing. Planning Minister Richard Wynne announced the new ministerial direction and planning policy on Friday. Hobsons Bay has eight of Victoria’s 38 MHFs, which include oil refineries, chemical manufacturing sites, gas processing plants and transport depots. Save Williamstown spokeswoman Charmian Gaud welcomed the regulations. “No longer will developers be able to engage and pay for safety experts to contradict WorkSafe, as happened in Port Phillip Woollen Mill zoning,” she said. The policy comes after an independent MHF advisory committee in 2016 found an inconsistent approach to rezoning near MHFs and recommended greater decision-making power for WorkSafe. City’s poor record for complaints By Benjamin Millar Maribyrnong council is one of the most complained about councils in Victoria, attracting more than one complaint to the Victorian Ombudsman’s Office for every 1000 residents. The Victorian Ombudsman’s Office annual report, released last week, shows the office received 85 complaints about Maribyrnong council in the 12 months to July. Although down from the 113 complaints lodged in the prior year, the figure made Maribyrnong the most complained about

council in Melbourne’s west and number 10 on the statewide list. The rate of recorded complaints per resident in Maribyrnong was also higher than most of the top 10 areas, including Moreland which was the most complained about council area in the state with 151 complaints recorded. There were 28 complaints against Hobsons Bay in the same period, down from 41. Maribyrnong council was the subject of a critical report by Victorian Ombudsman Deborah Glass that found its internal review practices for parking fines were too harsh. The investigation looked at five case studies,

most of them elderly, who had received an infringement for failing to display a disabled parking permit when parked in a disabled parking space. The Ombudsman noted that all of them had valid disability parking permits, however they made “a simple mistake” in failing to display the permit properly in their vehicle. The investigation found Maribyrnong council was unjust in refusing to cancel parking fines in cases where “exceptional circumstances” justified cancellation. “The internal reviews appeared to have focused on whether an offence was committed,

which was not in dispute, while failing to consider the exceptional circumstances raised by the applicant,” the Ombudsman found. “We found the council’s practices were lacking in fairness and discretion.” Maribyrnong council accepted two of the Ombudsman’s three recommendations, updating its guidelines and providing training to staff involved in internal reviews, but refused the third recommendation to pay back the individuals from the case studies. Maribyrnong council was contacted for comment but did not respond by time of publication.

Stepping up for charity A West Footscray salsa dancer is calling on people to get on their dancing shoes for a good cause. Ernesto Diaz is holding a salsa dancing fundraiser this Saturday to raise funds for the Stroke Foundation, Heart Foundation and Royal Melbourne Hospital. A stroke survivor himself, Mr Diaz suffered a stroke at the age of just 24 in 2006. He was rushed to emergency and underwent 13 hours of life-saving brain surgery to repair an aneurysm before being placed into an induced coma for 13 days. Mr Diaz then began the long journey of relearning how to move, talk and look after himself again. About three months into his recovery, he took up salsa dancing and found it an invaluable step towards getting back on his feet. “When I think of my stroke now I think of

salsa dancing,” he said. “It became a hobby and a good aid for my recovery.” His involvement in salsa helped Mr Diaz rebuild his confidence to the point where he now teaches salsa dance classes. He is using his journey to raise awareness of stroke among young people and showing that there can be plenty of light at the end of the tunnel. Mr Diaz is hoping to raise $5000 with Saturday night’s event, called #Dance4Hope. The event at Melbourne Bowls Club in Flagstaff Gardens will include dance classes, special guest performances and social dancing. Tickets will be $25 online or $30 at the door via www.gofundme.com/dance4hope-strokeawareness Benjamin Millar

Funding push ramps up By Goya Dmytryshchak Hobsons Bay council is calling on ratepayers to help lobby the state government for more money towards Altona boat ramp and the Warmies boat ramp at Newport as part of the council’s 10 state election priorities. Maintenance and infrastructure works for the ramps cost Hobsons Bay ratepayers about $450,000 annually, including $150,000 for the yearly dredging of Altona Safe Boat Harbour. A new public toilet being installed at Altona boat ramp will cost a further $270,000 this financial year. The council is calling on ratepayers to join its advocacy campaign ahead of November’s state election by asking the state government to help take the burden off the community in footing the costs of these facilities. Mayor Angela Altair said there was little funding support and ratepayers were doing most of the heavy lifting. “The fees that users are currently charged for launching contribute directly to council’s upkeep and operational expenditure on the ramps, but these facilities still cost Hobsons Bay ratepayers more than they make,” she said. “With such significant growth forecast for the west, coupled with fishing being the fastest growing recreational activity in Victoria, our boat ramp facilities are at a point where we do really need to see more funding support from the state government.” The council we will present the names of community supporters to the relevant ministers, local MPs and other relevant parties to demonstrate the level of community support for these improvements. Urgent call on hospital work Footscray’s crumbling hospital is at risk of catastrophic failure, according to the peak body representing the medical profession. Australian Medical Association Victoria president Julian Rait said the 65-year-old hospital is plagued by leaks, cracks and failing equipment and in urgent need of replacement. The state government last year announced Footscray Hospital would be rebuilt from scratch, yet allocated only $50 million towards a project estimated to likely cost more than $1 billion. The funding was flagged for a business case, design work and selecting one of three short-listed sites, but Associate Professor Rait said the lack of a clear timeline or budget commitment has staff worried the redevelopment will slip through the cracks after the state election. While welcoming the recent announcement of $562 million for an expansion of Frankston Hospital, Professor Rait said redeveloping Footscray is a far more pressing project. Western suburbs Greens MP Huong Truong has been running a ‘Fix Footscray Hospital’ campaign while Liberal MP Bernie Finn raised the matter in Parliament last week, saying the hospital was in “a disgraceful physical condition”. Health minister Jill Hennessy would not commit to a timeline for the works, saying the government is still deciding on a site for the new Footscray Hospital. Benjamin Millar

Growing young minds A Footscray childcare centre and kindergarten has been sowing the seeds of community connection with a garden planter box project. Brenbeal Children’s Centre has been working with a range of partners to help the gardens bloom from an idea to reality. The planter boxes were built by participants at the Braybrook Men’s Shed, using timber donated by Bunnings West Footscray. Newport Premix Concrete and Garden Supplies threw its support behind the project with rocks, soil and other materials. Footscray City College horticulture students helped finish off the project by bringing along seedlings they had raised in their school’s greenhouse.

The students recently joined Brenbeal kindergarten children in planting the seedlings and putting the final touches on the decoration of the garden, right down to the resident dinosaurs. Brenbeal manager Krystyna Soprun said the project was a great community partnership that would help teach the children about the value of working together. Ms Soprun said the centre has been further strengthening its community connections by partnering with neighbouring Footscray Hospital and the nearby Doutta Galla Aged Care Footscray on projects and visits.

Road Policing Enforcement Campaign Operation Scoreboard 2018 Operation Scoreboard (AFL Grand Final long weekend from Thursday 27th September to Sunday 30th September 2018) is identified as a period of potentially high risk to the Victorian community in terms of exposure to road trauma. Westgate Highway Patrol Sergeant Marty Wallace said the AFL Grand Final public holiday on Friday 28th September 2018 provides an opportunity for families to free themselves from their usual commitments and it is anticipated that large numbers of people will use Victorian roads, often driving long distances in unfamiliar driving conditions. The times of highest risk are when people are leaving for holiday destinations and returning home. Police will be targeting the main causes of fatalities and serious injuries in crashes which are: • Excessive speed • Driver distraction • Restraint non-compliance • Fatigue • Impaired driving (Alcohol and/or Drug) Motorists are requested to stay within the speed limit, don’t drink alcohol or take drugs and drive, leave your mobile phone out of reach, wear your seatbelt/child restraints and make sure you are well rested. Speed Cameras will be rostered in known high collision locations. Fatigue is one of the biggest killers on Victorian roads. Drivers are requested to plan their trip, be patient and ensure that you take at least a 15 minutes break at least every two hours and don’t drive if you are tired. Drivers planning to travel during this period can expect to see an increase in vehicles travelling on our major Freeways and Highways throughout the State. Road trauma isn’t just about the people who die – it’s about the enormous impact on the community, from the family members, to the emergency services workers who have to deal with these tragedies on a daily basis, to the police who have to deliver the devastating news to loved ones. All of the community has a responsibility and a role to play in reducing road trauma.

Remember, travel safety so that you arrive at your destination safely and enjoy your Grand Final Holiday weekend. RoadSafe Westgate Community Road Safety Council Chairman Mr Jim Giddings said it has been demonstrated time after time that speed is a contributing factor in most road crashes. Therefore stay within the speed limit and drive to suit the conditions you face. Speeding affects both the risk of a crash happening and the severity of injuries sustained when a crash does happen. Mr Giddings said the work of his group along with initiatives like the 2018 Operation Scoreboard Campaign for the AFL Grand Final Holiday long weekend would hopefully reduce the number of serious road crashes on our roads. He asked the community to report speeding drivers to Crime stoppers number 1800 333 000 Holiday driving has its challenges and drivers should drive in the hours they are normally awake, take regular breaks to reduce fatigue and allow extra space between vehicles. Drivers need to adapt to the conditions of the road, the onus is always on the driver to suit the conditions they are facing, and that includes the quality of the road. If you plan to have a drink then plan not to drive, taking a big risk like drink and driving is just not worth endangering your live or other road users. Before embarking on any driving trips drivers should check their tyres, windscreen washers, brakes and lights.

Second time around A paste-up mural celebrating Melbourne’s community of people living with disability has taken pride of place in Footscray. The Disability Pride mural, pasted up as part of the Melbourne Fringe Festival, replaces a similar mural mistakenly torn down by Maribyrnong council late last year. Seddon artist Larissa MacFarlane co-ordinated the new work by disability artists and activists on the Telstra Exchange building on Nicholson Street. The collaborative artwork challenges stereotypes of disability, joining the Melbourne community with the international Disability Pride movement. MacFarlane, who has an acquired brain

injury, said the new mural had been months in the making. The artist said it was “incredibly unfortunate” that council’s graffiti removal contractors had torn down the original mural, which had been created by more than 40 people. The work had been installed to help celebrate International Day of People with Disability. Maribyrnong chief executive Stephen Wall apologised at the time for the “unfortunate mistake”. The council contributed funding towards the re-installation of the new mural, pasted up last week by people with disabilities. Benjamin Millar

NEWS STARWEEKLY.COM.AU

Dad’s words guided MP By Goya Dmytryshchak “I would like to think I have extracted every last ounce of my ability to serve as the member for Williamstown,” retiring MP Wade Noonan told Parliament last Thursday in his valedictory statement. Mr Noonan, who was elected in 2007 and served as minister for industry and employment, resources, and police and corrections, last year announced he would not contest next month’s election. Addressing Parliament last week, Mr Noonan said the ambulance crisis had gripped his life for two years while he was opposition parliamentary secretary for health and mental health. He recalled meeting parents who had lost their children while waiting for an ambulance. “Their trauma and loss have never left me,” Mr Noonan said. “Their determination and relentless pursuit of change is something I will never forget, and in my view it helped change the government in 2014.” It was as police and corrections minister that he met Edith and George McKeon, the parents of murder victim Jill Meagher. He described the McKeons as “a source of support” to him during his brief absence from the Parliament. “My break from Parliament in early 2016 is part of my story, but it does not define me. “Poor mental health does not discriminate – in fact it is everywhere. Reading the signs and getting help is the key.” The father of two recounted to Parliament the words his own father had told him. “When I walked into this place my father said, ‘You bring with you your integrity, and the challenge is to keep it to the last day when you walk out’, and I have never forgotten that advice.”

Footscray MP Marsha Thomson made her last appearance in Victoria’s Parliament, bringing almost 20 years in state politics towards a close. The Labor stalwart first entered Parliament in 1999 via the upper house, moving into the safe seat of Footscray in 2006 to replace the retiring Bruce Mildenhall. In her valedictory statement to state Parliament last Thursday, Ms Thomson said the major issue that first drove her to be politically active was education. “I believed then, and I do now, that the government has a responsibility to provide the best possible education to our children,” she said. Ms Thomson also spoke of the importance of trade unions, as a “proud, card-carrying member of the Australian Workers Union”. Ms Thomson said she was proud to have helped introduce legislation that strengthened rights for the LGBQI community, as well as abortion law reform, voluntary assisted dying and fighting family violence. Locally, she highlighted the plans for a new Footscray Learning Precinct, funding for Dinjerra Primary School, the West Gate Tunnel and a promise to rebuild Footscray Hospital. Benjamin Millar

Alison Chan was nervous about leaving the community she knew and moving to Amarco Apartments at Kingsville in June, 2017.

Since embarking on her “new chapter”, Alison has immersed herself in the local community and making friends.

But she says moving to the independent retirement living complex was the right decision.

“I can now do all the things that I never had the time or opportunity to do in the past,” she says.

A serious fall at her home of 34 years was the catalyst for Alison’s life-changing move.

Learn about the services available to help you live well with peace of mind at the Amarco Apartments and Uniting AgeWell free Seniors Wellbeing Expo between 11am and 1pm on Friday, October 12.

“I fell down a step and I lay down on the ground outside my front door for 10 hours with multiple hip fractures,” she says.

“It was not the first time I had fallen. In fact, I’d fallen so many times that my son said I was not to continue living by myself.”

MY PLACE Newport’s Joan Mibus is 81 and more active than ever. She speaks with Goya Dmytryshchak. What’s your connection to Hobsons Bay? I’ve been living in Newport for more than 70 years. I was four and a half when I came here and I’ve lived in the same street since then. I left it when I got married, my marriage broke up so I had to come home again because in those days you couldn’t get rent or anything. Then I looked after my parents and reared my kids. What do you like about Newport? It’s comfortable and I know everybody there. It is home. Everybody seems to know one another, or they used to, but I seem to get on with everybody.

Newport was not like it is now – it’s built up. When I went to school, that and a Catholic school was all there was in Newport. There was hardly any houses. We used to have bonfires. Guy Fawkes Night, our parents used to watch us kids doing their bonfire. They used to help us to get the bonfire going. We had a great time and ate our potatoes. Our parents used to stand out on the footpath and that was their meeting, too. The mothers used to put a clean apron on, or a pinny as they call them now, and it was a lovely evening for them as well. It was really lovely. What don’t you like about Newport? I do not like those units. They are horrible. And they’re pulling these beautiful homes down to do those units. The streets are narrow and the people are coming in now – they don’t like walking very much these days – and they’re

putting their cars in the street and when the other ones come from work they can’t put their cars there and that’s frustrating everybody, too. How did you become a regular at Laverton Community Hub’s exercise classes? I was going to a gym at Maidstone. I was over

100 kilos and I was unfit. They asked me, would I like to join a gym for 13 weeks for $13 and I started at Genesis. That lasted nearly six years. Then I read in the local paper that Laverton had zumba and I thought, I’d like to do that. Then I started here (at Laverton) twice a week. Then I started tai chi. So, I do tai chi Friday mornings and then three days a week I do zumba here. I

also go to Curves at Borrack Square two nights a week. Not bad for an old girl. What’s your local favourite cafe or eatery and why? I like Favor & Grace. That is beautiful and they are beautiful, beautiful people.

JANE BUNN CHANNEL SEVEN WEATHER PRESENTER FB: How would you rate yourself as a cook? JB: I like food. I’m an OK cook. I love to entertain. I don’t want to say yes, I’m an amazing, amazing cook, but I do love my food and I do love my wine.

Cheese please It’s quite remarkable the number of Food Bytes guests who (just like Jane Bunn) list cheese as one of their all time favourite foods, and would much prefer to pick at a good cheese platter than order a dessert. But have you ever thought of making your own? There’s nothing quite as satisfying as handing around a mouth-watering selection of blue vein, havarti, feta or mozzarella and being able to say “I made that!”

FB: What is your signature dish? JB: Caramelised carrot soup. I know that sounds a bit weird off the bat. It’s done in a pressure cooker and the carrots get all caramelised and it makes this most amazing soup. with Sarah Patterson

FB: What is your favourite food? JB: If I had to narrow it down … I love seafood, I love meat, I love desserts … I love everything. But cheese … it’s the thing where I go “I absolutely have to eat that right now.” Oysters as well! FB: What is your favourite drink? JB: I have been known to say that I only drink water or wine. I think my favourite would have to be champagne. I don’t have tea. I don’t have coffee. I don’t have any hot drinks. I don’t have soft drinks. I don’t have cordial.

Cheeselinks at Lara offers all the equipment you need to create delicious cheese and yoghurt in your own home. Or if you’re after a fun family activity, Cheeselinks also hosts workshops, providing expert advice and guidance on how to make your own cheese. Get in touch with Janet at www.cheeselinks.com.au

FB: If you could only have one more meal, what would it be? JB: If I had to pick my last meal on the planet, it would be really hard to just say one food. My favourite way of eating is a planned degustation that has matching wines as well.

As always, if you have any recipes, tips or other info you’d like to share, email me at sarah@ howdypartnersmedia.com.au

FB: Which five people would you most like to invite to dinner? JB: If I’m cooking, then just close friends, because then there’s no pressure. If I don’t have to worry about being under pressure … Rene Redzepi (Danish chef), Morgan Freeman (just for the voice alone – how would you not want to have that at your dinner table?), Anthony Bourdain (for what values he could bring to the table), Nigella Lawson (because she’s awesome) and Reese Witherspoon (because I love her!) FB: What is your favourite TV food show and who is your favourite TV food person? JB: I’m a massive fan of Top Chef Chef. And I love Curtis Stone. At the races last year, I met him and thought “This is really, really cool.”

As always, if you have any recipes, tips or other info you’d like to share, email me at sarah@howdypartnersmedia.com.au

FB: Do you have a kitchen tip for us? JB: Slow cooked egg in the sous vide machine. The traditional recipe for that takes an hour. Quite frankly, who has an hour to wait in the morning? There is a faster way. You set your (water temperature) to 75 degrees. You put the egg in whole for fourteen minutes. Run it under cold water and crack it open. It is the yummiest egg you could possibly imagine.

In Melbourne, the sale of a house during a campaign rises from 63 per cent to 84 per cent when it is advertised in a newspaper. Data has been collated to create an industry service called Media Maximiser, which tags almost every property that comes on to the market with its original price, where it was advertised, when it went on the market and was finally sold, and the difference between the asking price and the final deal. This research is the first from a non-newspaper publisher that provides statistical evidence of the value of print. The amazing results have given publishers further evidence that print is still a powerful tool. 2

This lovely old dame has kept her period facade, as well as high strapped ceilings, deep skirting boards and leadlight bay windows, but mostly it’s about bright, light and contemporary. The floorboarded entry hall is flanked by three carpeted and fitted bedrooms, the main with walk-in robe and en suite. The fresh main bathroom incorporates a European laundry. Rich floorboards continue into the living domain which has large windows admitting streams of light – bounced around by white paintwork. Two sets of glass double sliding doors reveal a deck and the fenced solar-heated pool. A paved parking area for two cars is behind a right-of-way roller door.

Beautifully appointed and awash with luxe, this residence will have discerning families paying attention. American oak floorboards anchor the ground floor living domain. The 6x5-metre living area, with floating cabinetry and leafiness seen through big windows, incorporates a fab designer kitchen. Both upstairs bathrooms, fully tiled and designer-level indulgent, accompany a powder room and three fitted and wool-carpeted bedrooms, the main with lavish walk-in robe. ALTONA 27 Bell Avenue, 3018 Barlow McEwan Tribe: 9391 1888

Price: Contact agent

The bell miner, a beautiful south eastern native bird with green, black and yellow markings, is the namesake of Bell Avenue – in fact this development is colloquially known as ‘the birdcage’ as all the streets are named after birdlife. This property has been transformed by an eclectic couple with a penchant for fun and their style is perhaps almost as full of colour as the bell miner itself. Their stamp on this German engineer-built late 1970s property cannot be denied and will suit a creative couple who love to entertain. Parquetry flooring on entry is set

against heavy-set raw silk curtains – also found in the second bedroom – together with timber-lined exposed beam ceilings with colonial-style light fittings. It’s all reminiscent of a grand dining hall. Renovations include a library area, timber feature walls and a games room-cum-study with all of the tech-inspired colour and light display you could imagine. Walk through this property and experience what can only be described as a kaleidoscope of themes, referencing movies such as Harry Potter (the powder room in the garage has a ‘platform 3/4’ motif and fit-out) and Alice In Wonderland in the

kitchen where the hot pink, high gloss cabinetry has to be seen to be believed. Chequerboard flooring and splashbacks make a striking contrast. Inclusions are a Belling three-door cast iron hot pink oven with induction cooktop, an integrated Smeg dishwasher and a two-door Smeg fridge. Bedrooms two and three have been transformed into a generous main bedroom with a huge walk-in robe and en suite. Every addition is high-quality and full of life. From the wallpaper, to the tiling, the curtains and the appliances, everything is the very best.

The main bathroom features a stunning copper freestanding bath with matching twin hand basins, intricate Moroccan-style tiling and a large shower. There is a 19th century birdcage set in the second bedroom, a possible nod to the development’s nickname. This room also has a wall mural depicting dragons and a forest scene. Outside, find two separate courtyard areas, one accessed from bedroom two. The second paved area has a tiki bar and spa area. Samantha Freestone

Window is open for that first home The task of buying a first home is still monumental – but a window of opportunity has cracked open as prices soften and market dynamics shift, according to UBS economist Carlos Cacho.

This is an edited version of a story from Chris Kohler, domain.com.au (iStock)

“For first-home buyers who have got their finances in order and have strong credit, it’s certainly a good opportunity,” Mr Cacho says. “But I’d say it’s probably going to get better.” Melbourne house prices have dropped 1.8 per cent to July 31 but still managed a thin annual gain – expected to turn negative soon – while units posted a fall in the quarter. So, first-home buyers may find some wind in their sails but buying in a falling market presents its own challenges. “If you overpaid 24 or 36 months ago it wasn’t too much of a problem, because within a couple of months, you’d already made that capital back in appreciation,” the economist says. “If you overpay now it could be years before you retrieve that extra payment.” The best approach for first-time buyers keen to wade into one of the most-talked about property markets in the world is to keep an eye out for areas of distress in the market, which should be presenting themselves soon.

“There are going to be good opportunities that come up,” Mr Cacho says. “And that may be a seller who has an interest-only mortgage and is switching to principal and interest and can’t afford the repayments and so has to sell by a certain date. “A case like that could provide an opportunity [for first-home buyers].” Data shows first-home buyers are bolstering their position in the market, in particular filling a hole left by falling demand from foreign buyers. “First-home buyer demand continues to offset a reduction in demand from owner-occupiers and foreign buyers, with state government incentives and moderating prices also likely playing a role in helping first-home buyers move onto the property ladder,” NAB chief economist Alan Oster says. So, with market dynamics finally giving first-home buyers something to work with, the question is when should they make the move? Most economists, UBS included, expect capital city prices to weaken further before hitting bottom.

Cassar’s grand season By Lance Jenkinson A sumptuous reward awaits Darcy Cassar for an impressive bottom-age season with the Western Jets in the TAC Cup. The medium forward/midfielder will get the chance to take on the best under 17s in the nation in the AFL All Stars Futures match at the MCG on Saturday, which will be a curtain-raiser to the 2018 AFL grand final between Collingwood and the West Coast Eagles. Cassar is excited to be running out on to the hallowed turf before the superstars battle it out for the AFL premiership. “I was rapt when I found out I was picked, he said. “It will be great to be a part of the best kids around the country. “It’s really good to be able to play on the ‘G, especially before the AFL boys run on to the ground. “All the recruiters will be out there, so hopefully I can show them what I’ve got. Cassar has turned heads with his play this season. Jets coach Torin Baker loves the versatility in the 17-year-old’s game, deploying him as a high half-forward, wingman and even at times on the ball. A Keilor product, Cassar first came on the radar of the talent scouts playing for Vic Metro at the under 16 national championships. While Cassar is taking massive steps in the right direction, he is grounded and just wants to improve every time he pulls on a football jumper in a match or training situation.

He closely monitored how more experienced Jets teammates such as Xavier O’Halloran or Connor Thar went about their business and is like a sponge when Baker is giving him advice. That will be no different when he turns out for Team Bartel alongside Jets teammate Emerson Jeka in the futures game on Saturday. “It’s been a really good season for me – I played all 18 games, Cassar said. “It’s also been a bit up and down, a few off games and a few good games. “Everything can be worked on. Cassar, an Essendon Keilor College student, got his start at Taylors Lakes Auskick. It was with his fellow Auskickers as an eight-year-old that he got his first chance to play on the MCG at half-time of an AFL game. Cassar went on to play for Hillside in the juniors before moving to Keilor. His biggest supporters are his dad Mark, who drives him to all his training and games, and mum Josie, who critiques his game. They are “rapt their son is getting the chance to play on the ‘G on grand final day, but whether they will be there in the crowd or watching on television is to be determined.

Darcy Cassar has had an impressive bottom-age season with the Western Jets. (Shawn Smits)

SPORT Werribee’s premier coaching coup Williams said. “I’ve seen how terrifically Williamstown and Port Melbourne have done as stand-alone clubs, and I thought this was a great opportunity with Werribee being the only stand-alone team in the outer western suburbs. “For any kid who misses the draft, I’m really looking forward to trying to help them to get into the AFL. I encourage them to come down to Werribee and show us what they can do.” Werribee football operations manager Stuart Balloch hailed the signing as a huge coup for the club. “It’s not every day you get an AFL premiership coach join your club,” he said. “It’s a massive appointment for our club, and I trust that Mark’s experience, profile, and drive for success will carry our club to new and exciting levels.” Tara Murray

■ The

AFL career of Ryan Griffen is over, announcing his retirement after 257 games, 202 of those as a Bulldog. The dual Charles Sutton medal winner, All Australian and former Bulldogs captain played his last game for GWS in its loss to Collingwood. Griffen’s exit from the Whitten Oval was one of the most unpleasant departures I have seen in my time at the club. I don’t know any more about the circumstances than anyone else who reads the papers, but it was not good for club or player. I always liked Griffen and found him to be good fun and a decent person. I hope Bulldogs supporters welcome him back in time, as his contribution during a difficult time should not be forgotten.

■ The

trophy cabinet at John McLeod Reserve just got a little more crowded with Deer Park adding yet another cup to the collection, defeating a brave Hoppers Crossing on Saturday at Avalon Airport Oval. Deer Park proved to be as unstoppable as ever, taking the club into new territory in suburban footy history. Kwame McHarg and Chris Stewart chalked up their sixth individual premiership medals and Stewart further enhanced his stature with a Herb Pascarl medal. A Barry Priest medal is all that is missing from his collection, and probably likely in a week’s time. Other clubs are bridging the gap but it is fair to say there is no reason to see this dynasty declining. Check out the Deer Park story on the icon series on the WRFL website.

By Lance Jenkinson The record button had been pressed and the interview with western suburbs-raised Collingwood forward Will Hoskin-Elliott was about to begin – until a familiar voice piped in before the first question could even be asked. The man with that distinctive voice was none other than Collingwood president Eddie McGuire, who enthusiastically congratulated Hoskin-Elliott on a fine game in the Magpies stunning preliminary final win over Richmond at the MCG on Friday night. It was a dream night for Hoskin-Elliott. The 25-year-old had played a big part in getting his boyhood club Collingwood into the 2018 AFL grand final. Having McGuire come in to pat him on the back after a job well done, it does not get any better. Hoskin-Elliott was smiling from ear to ear. His family, a lot of whom bleed the black and white of Collingwood, would have been immensely proud. “I’m over the moon, absolutely over the moon,” Hoskin-Elliott said. “I was a Pies fan growing up, so it’s been even better for me. “Mum and my two older sisters were pretty full-on Collingwood supporters growing up and I got passed down the jerseys, so I stuck with them and I’m glad I did.” Hoskin-Elliott will play his 100th AFL game in the grand final. A wiry medium forward with incredible game sense, a leap that takes you aback and an eye for goal, Hoskin-Elliott has carved out a fine niche for himself in the big league. Drafted by the GWS Giants in 2011, Hoskin-Elliott played 52 games over five seasons before crossing to Collingwood. The move to the Magpies has been great for club and player. Hoskin-Elliott has been a mainstay of the team, playing 22 games in his first year and is already up to 25 this season. This week, when he takes to the field in the season decider against the West Coast Eagles, it will be special. “I was there in 2010 for the draw [when Collingwood drew with St Kilda in the grand final] and I went to the grand final parade and that sort of stuff,” he said. “It’s just going to be amazing to be on the opposite side of it this time.” Hoskin-Elliott’s game was refined at the Western Jets in the TAC Cup. The Jets turned him from a talented junior into a top four draft selection. “I got picked up in the under 15s through the Brad Johnson Squad,” he said.

IN THE DOGHOUSE

■ Hoppers

Crossing veteran Matt Ryan has announced his retirement after 420 games with the Warriors. ‘Dimma’ has given his all as a player and leader at Hogans Road and was the benchmark for those who played with and against him. He had all the skills, an attitude that inspired and an ability to make those around him better.

■ Suburban

football is in pretty good shape but the ongoing viability of clubs is a continuing issue. Inner suburban clubs are again feeling the pinch as the areas around them deal with a shift in population. There were many reasons behind the model Deer Park instigated. It had no juniors so it improvised and was fortunate to have the fiscal know-how to make it work. Yarraville has reinvented itself in recent years with a strong junior base. That same challenge faces Albion and others for the future. Kevin Hillier

“I was lucky enough to get drafted at the end of the 18s carnival.” Home is where the heart is for Hoskin-Elliott. Getting to represent North Sunshine, a club that has struggled for the most part since his junior days, on the big stage will be a proud moment for him. Who would have thought a Roadrunners junior, who only got the chance to square off with division 1 juniors when he moved to the Jets, would be gracing the hallowed turf of the MCG on that last Saturday in September?

“I only played for North Sunshine as a junior and we were always down in the C-grade and had one or two good players in our team,” Hoskin-Elliott said. “I got picked up very early by the Jets and sort of spent most of my time there and didn’t get much of a chance to play North Sunshine footy after that. “I still get back down to North Sunshine now and watch all the boys. “They’re struggling a little bit, but they’ve been unreal for me.”

AFL premiership coach Mark Williams has been appointed Werribee Football Club’s new coach. Werribee has signed the former Port Adelaide coach for the next three seasons. He replaces John Lamont, who stepped down after five seasons in charge. Williams said the combination of the newly redeveloped Avalon Airport Oval, along with the opportunities presented by Werribee’s move to a stand-alone club, made the senior coaching role an exciting prospect. Since leaving Port Adelaide in 2010, Williams has had roles at Essendon and Richmond. He’s coached Victorian Amateur Football Association side Ajax the past two seasons. “The truth is, I love coaching and with Werribee taking such a professional approach by inviting me down and showing me what I can only describe as a top-class training facility and oval, I thought this is as good as it gets,”

Stewart cranks out another showstopper

The joy of a sixth consecutive premiership starts to sink in for Deer Park ruckman Chris Stewart and his teammates. Below: Deer Park forward James Wong gets a nice ride at the back of the pack. (Pictures: Damjan Janevski)

Six of the best for Lions By Lance Jenkinson This was a premiership with six appeal for Deer Park. The Lions broke new ground in becoming the first non-amateur top flight team in AFL Victorian metropolitan leagues to register an astonishing sixth consecutive premiership with a runaway 48-point win over Hoppers Crossing in the Western Region Football League division 1 grand final at Avalon Airport Oval on Saturday. Lions coach Marc Bullen is rarely lost for words, but on the day his club set a new record, he was taken aback. “I don’t know what to say to be honest,” he said. “It’s pretty raw at the moment. “It’s hard to explain.” The eight-goal margin would suggest that Deer Park had the game all on its own terms. That is half right, as the Lions did totally dominate the second half, but it was so far from the truth if you take into account a super competitive first half. Bullen was seething at quarter-time and rightly so. The Lions had the aid of a strong breeze and an extra man for 15 minutes after Hoppers Crossing’s Harley Armstrong-Weston was shown a yellow card, but they could not capitalise in the first quarter, finishing with 2.5 and a flimsy five-point lead. Hoppers Crossing had a chance to stamp its authority on the game in the second term, but they too did not make the most of the strong wind at their back. Ryan Kitchen ran into an open goal to give the Warriors a lead, but Herb Pascarl Medal winner for best-on-ground Chris Stewart replied with a stupendous goal to wrench the lead back. Instead of taking the ball out of the ruck, Stewart kicked the ball in mid-air from about 25 metres out and it fortuitously sailed straight over the goal umpires hat. Hoppers Crossing took the lead again through Ashlin Brown, a sensational snap goal

Six pack Deer Park’s record run of division 1 grand final victories 2018: Deer Park 12.17 (89) d Hoppers Crossing 6.5 (41) 2017: Deer Park 9.12 (66) d Sunshine 9.9 (63) 2016: Deer Park 25.21 (171) d Hoppers Crossing 8.9 (57) 2015: Deer Park 23.17 (155) d Werribee Districts 2.7 (19) 2014: Deer Park 22.26 (158) d Spotswood 12.9 (81) 2013: Deer Park 15.10 (100) d Spotswood 14.15 (99)

from hard up on the boundary that would have been goal of the day in most other games had it not been for Stewart’s pearler. That would be the Warriors last lead of the game. James Wong and Stewart rounded out the quarter with goals to give Deer Park a 12-point lead at the main break. It was a crucial buffer because up until

46 MARIBYRNONG & HOBSONS BAY STAR WEEKLY \ SEPTEMBER 26, 2018

that point Bullen was unusually tense on the sidelines. “I didn’t think it was going to happen for us in the first half of footy,” he said. “I thought it wasn’t going to be our day.” Never fear, Deer Park would find its very best form of the season in the second half. The Lions piled on 7.8 to 2.2 in the second half – only their wayward kicking for goal stopping it from being a total blow out. Once Mark Galea’s beautiful snap goal for Deer Park to start the third quarter was followed up by a long goal from teammate Wong, it seemed only a matter of time before the Lions would break the game open. Daniel Strnak, who had a stellar game as a small forward for Hoppers Crossing, got one against the run of play, but his team had to wait until time-on of the last quarter to get the goal umpires’ two flags waving again when Kitchen got a consolation goal. In between, it was all Deer Park. There were dominant Lions players on every line. Wong, after a slow start, became the most dangerous forward in the match, though Galea could have some claims too. Jason Kennedy was rock solid at full-back in his last game before going into retirement, while Rodney Van Riet’s experience shone through, Kwame McHarg got stronger as the game wore on and Trent Williams played a negating role. Jake McKenzie and Paul Bower, both superb ball users off half-back and through the midfield, were stiff to be second-best in the race for the best-on-ground medal. However, the honour simply had to go to Stewart. Bullen was tremendously proud to lead Deer Park to a record-breaking sixth straight flag. “It’s just a great feeling from a personal point of view and more importantly for the club to succeed six years in a row,” he said. “We could’ve lost two of the grand finals out of the last six by an inch and the challenge came at us today in Hoppers, who were sensationally coached and had a great game plan, but we managed to overcome them.”

So often during Deer Park’s record-breaking run of six Western Region Football League division 1 premierships, big man Chris Stewart has been involved in a key moment to change the course of a grand final. It should be no surprise Stewart was once again involved in all the big moments of the Lions 48-point grand final victory over Hoppers Crossing at Avalon Airport Oval on Saturday, earning the Herb Pascarl Medal for best-on-ground in the process. Stewart was tireless, roaming from the defensive 50 metre arc to his own team’s goal square and every blade of grass in between. He dominated in the ruck and was an imposing presence in the air when either drifting forward or backing back in defence. You hear the saying, we wish we had two of him, but Stewart covers so much ground that coach Marc Bullen would not be greedy enough to ask the football gods to deliver another Stewart. The best thing about Stewart, if you talk to his teammates, is he is all about the team. Stewart backs that up when securing the medal for best-afield in the grand final. “The Herb Pascarl was never on my mind,” he said. “There was only one medal [a premiership medal] that I wanted. “I did take a couple of good contested marks and played my role, but I thought Jake McKenzie was outstanding today, Trent Williams’ role on Ashlin Brown was sensational, and Paul Bower was an absolute star, he sold that much candy he could open his own store. “I’m obviously humbled and honoured to be recognised as the best player in the grand final.” Stewart provided three game-changing moments in the second quarter on Saturday. With the game in the balance, Stewart kicked the ball from the ruck contest from mid-air without taking possession and it struck his boot so sweetly it sailed between the big sticks from about 25 metres out. Moments later, when Hoppers Crossing was in the attack, Stewart drifted across for what could have been a goal-saving mark. The most underrated act by Stewart that quarter was his strong mark at the edge of the goal square and instead of going back with a goal he would kick 10 out of 10 times, he brought his teammate Jase Perkins into play for an easy goal. Stewart is one of only two players to play in all six flags, along with Kwame McHarg. Bullen has either been coach or player-coach in all six. By no means is it a ho hum experience for Stewart. “You feed off the players who haven’t played in one,” he said. “The boys we brought in this year, Dyson Stevens, Will Krithararis and Paul Bower, just seeing their excitement in the build-up to grand final week and the nerves on them, it’s what you play footy for.” Lance Jenkinson
