Primary school’s $1m lift By Goya Dmytryshchak

School council president Michael Lynch said the leadership team had worked hard over a number of years to manage growing enrolments and was very pleased to have secured the significant investment for the new classrooms. Williamstown MP Wade Noonan said the school had also received additional classrooms in late 2016. “It’s related to the fact that their enrolment growth really has increased quite rapidly over the last five or six years,” he said. “The school also operates with a zone and therefore its enrolment catchment means that when the parents want to enrol their children at the school, if they live in the zone, the school is somewhat compelled to take that enrolment. “Victoria went through a baby boom between about 2007 and 2009, and we’re seeing the impact of that baby boom starting to increase enrolment numbers right across our schools.”

A blooming good idea Hope for a brighter, cancer-free future is blooming. The community is being urged to support Daffodil Day, the Cancer Council’s flagship fundraiser each August. Supporters and volunteers will be selling daffodils and merchandise and collecting donations to help fund the cancer fight. This year, the Cancer Council is hoping to raise $4 million for cancer research. Daffodil Day will be on Friday, August 24. One of Hobsons Bay’s fastest-growing schools has received more than $1 million in state government funding for four new classrooms. Williamstown North Primary School has been allocated $1.022 million for a double-storey relocatable building that will be open for term one next year. Principal Jim Cahill said the school had grown from 650 students six years ago to 810 today. He said the school had a “designated neighbourhood boundary” that meant it could only accept children from within that local zone, regardless of interest from families outside the area. “Our enrolments are completely limited to that area and basically there is no access to the school for anyone beyond that,” he said. He partly attributed the school’s growth to increased residential development. “The demography of Williamstown continues to change and we’ve had townhouses, flats, units and apartments come up in the area as well,” he said. “I think families are making more flexible choices in regards to accommodation compared to the past. “Certainly, the school has a very strong record of achievement … I think there’s certainly a high level of confidence from parents in their choice of Williamstown North as a government primary school.” He said the school’s NAPLAN results were “very rigorous and robust” and the school prided itself on inclusion, which was recognised with a Victorian Education Excellence Award for Outstanding Inclusive Education in 2016.

Breaking the cycle of debt abuse By Benjamin Millar Forced from the family home without a cent to her name, Diana knew she couldn’t go back. Her husband of 22 years, the father of their two children, had steadily increased his aggression and violence towards his family and it was no longer safe in her own home. At the time, Diana thought she was fleeing with nothing, but found out the situation was worse than that – her husband overdrew $13,000 from a joint bank account on the

day they separated and she was forced into crippling debt. As a New Zealand citizen, she was not entitled to welfare support. Homeless and caring for her youngest son, who was trying to complete year 12, Diana was struggling for food and shelter, let alone paying off the debt left in her name. After three years of anxiety and stress caused by the debt, a recent chance interaction led Diana to Footscray-based McAuley Community Services for Women, which had just started a new partnership with community legal service WEstjustice.

Diana explained her situation to a WEstjustice worker. Within days she received news that lifted an enormous burden from her shoulders – her debts had been wiped. Diana is one of 24 women who have experienced family violence and been relieved of more than $100,000 of debts in just four months of the partnership. WEstjustice policy director Stephanie Tonkin, who led the project, said economic abuse was present in virtually all family violence situations. “It keeps women trapped and unable to

leave because they have been denied access to their own money, and even when they do, they are saddled with their abusers’ debts, fines and other legal issues,” she said. Sonja Hood, chair of McAuley’s board, said the partnership had made a remarkable difference in the lives of the women it had helped. “You know how quickly something can spiral if you don’t deal with it when it first comes up,” she said. “I would like to see this rolled out more widely.”

A lot of older Italians and Greeks come in and say ‘your father was a saviour’, he would give them what they needed and tell them to come back when they could afford to pay.” The business remained a family affair, passing on to Trevor and his older brother Geoffrey and now involves the next generation as well. “My brother Geoffrey has been here 62 years and I started here 45 years ago,” Mr Hope said. The hardware business lasted 30 years, until a slew of other stores opened in the area. The toy side of the business fared better, surviving

60 years, until larger chain stores forced the smaller shops out of business. The bicycle side has continued, but rising taxes and rates and online retail has the family bowing to pressure from developers to sell up. “Developers could go 14 storeys, so maybe they could build up and put us underneath.” Footscray real estate agent Trimson Partners has listed 263, 265-267 and 271 for sale by public auction on Thursday, September 6. A Footscray institution is feeling the pinch of a move toward online shopping and the area’s apartment boom. Ted’s Cycles, a Barkly Street stalwart, is a family-run business dealing with rising costs and the steady move towards online shopping. Hobsons Bay council will soon live stream its meetings for people to watch online. Councillor Colleen Gates told last week’s council meeting that meetings were already podcast and live streaming was a natural next step in a digital world. “Live streaming means that for those who can’t make it on a Tuesday night, you’ll be able to live stream and watch the council meetings in real time rather than waiting for the podcast to be uploaded the following day,” she said. An officer’s report noted the risk of defamation when streaming in real time. “Meetings are an open forum of statements, questions and answers very much like state and federal Parliament, however unlike state and federal government, parliamentary privilege does not exist in local government,” it stated. “When negative statements occur during a meeting that is not recorded, the potential for damage is generally confined to the audience in attendance. “Generally, a council cannot be held liable for the defamatory comments made by a person during live streaming [not including a councillor as this will be covered by council’s insurance policy]. “However where council publishes a recording of a council meeting on its internet website which contains a defamatory statement made by a person [including a councillor], it may be liable in defamation as the publisher.” To mitigate the risk, the council will vet recordings prior to publication to ensure defamatory statements are not made within the broadcast.

Barking up the right tree By Benjamin Millar Maribyrnong residents are being urged to branch out to help protect significant trees in their neighbourhoods. Maribyrnong council is in the process of compiling a significant tree register that will list and retain the area’s most important trees. The new register has been created in response to last year’s deliberate destruction of a giant oak tree, estimated to be more than 120 years old, on a Footscray block owned by a property developer. Residents will be encouraged to nominate trees, which will then be assessed by an independent arborist. The criteria used to assess a tree’s significance will be based on the National Trust of Australia’s Significant Tree Register. The National Trust earlier this year threw its support behind the council creating its own register, but wants the council to engage an arborist to carry out a comprehensive review of trees across the municipality rather than relying solely on the community. Community nominations for the Maribyrnong significant trees register close on November 30. The National Trust is also encouraging residents to suggest significant trees for listing on its own register. The National Trust and the Footscray Historical Society will present a talk on the subject next week. National Trust community advocate for environmental heritage, Jessica Hood will speak on topics such as what makes a tree significant and the process for nominating trees. The talk will be held from 6-7pm on Wednesday, August 29, at Ercildoune, 66 Napier Street, Footscray. RSVP: Carmel 9689 3820 or foothist@bigpond.com.

A tough nut to crack A rare mature macadamia tree could be set for the chop despite growing on a heritage-listed Footscray property. The property at 56 Whitehall Street was built as the Junction Hotel in 1871 and is heritage listed, however the listing does not cover its trees. A planning permit to convert the property into offices was granted last month, raising alarm that the tree could be removed to make way for parking. National Trust of Australia advocacy manager Felicity Watson said the trust was aware there was a “potentially significant” tree on the property. “The National Trust encourages the retention of the tree until appropriate assessment has been undertaken,” she said. “As a rare and impressive example of a macadamia tree in Victoria, the tree is worthy of being integrated into all future plans for the site.” Ms Watson said macadamia integrifolia is a rainforest species endemic to Queensland and large mature macadamia trees were uncommon in Victoria. Maribyrnong council director of planning services Nigel Higgins said the council received a nomination to include the tree on its significant tree register and an arborist has been engaged to assess its significance. The property owner was contacted for comment.

Pokies kill funding bid

Get picky for a good cause

By Goya Dmytryshchak Hobsons Bay council has rejected a request to borrow nearly $2 million to help fund Williamstown Football Club’s $6 million redevelopment plans, saying it would contradict its problem gambling policy. The club asked the council to enter into a community bond or low-interest state government loan for $1.957 million to improve the Williamstown Cricket Ground. The club proposed that it and the council would each service half of the loan. Its plans included more changerooms, amenities, doctors’ and massage rooms, offices for the club’s and Western Jets’ staff, lighting upgrades, a commercially-operated gym, medical centre and a cafe. The council passed a resolution at last week’s meeting which stated: “the funding model does not align with council’s funding priorities and that council will not enter into a community bond to fund the proposal”. A report tabled at Tuesday’s council meeting stated the funding proposal contradicted the council’s problem gambling (electronic gaming machines) policy, which states “council will not provide funding, grants, sponsorship or other resources for any activities that promote gambling”. “The Williamstown Football Club operates Seagulls Nest which has 66 electronic gaming machines,” the report stated. “EGMs are the WFC’s primary source of revenue. “Losses in 2016-17 at the Seagulls Nest were $6.9 million, the second highest of all gaming venues in Hobsons Bay.” Cr Jonathon Marsden told last week’s council meeting that councillors were “somewhat hamstrung by their policy position”.

“Our community grants guidelines from 2017 disallow eligibility for funding for organisations that derive income from gambling,” he said. However, the council resolved to work with Williamstown Football Club and Williamstown Cricket Club to identify opportunities for additional amenities at the ground. included in this year’s council budget with works expected to start in October. The club announced on Friday it had received a commitment for $273,000 from AFL Victoria towards developing “appropriate changeroom and match day facilities befitting women participants, VFL standards and broader community users”. “We look forward to working closely with council,” it said in a statement.

People aged 16 and over can now vote for which community initiative should receive state government funding under the Pick My Project initiative. Nearly 70 project ideas across Hobsons Bay and Maribyrnong are vying for funds including community gardens, outdoor theatre, festivals, cycling infrastructure, public art, historical and environmental conservation, and initiatives to fight the war on waste. State Williamstown MP Wade Noonan praised the standard of ideas. “There have been some really fantastic ideas submitted across our community and now it’s time to pick the winners,” he said. “Picking a favourite project for funding is an exciting way to make our community an even better place to live. “I want to thank all those individuals and groups who have nominated an idea and I wish them well during the voting phase.” Voters can visit the Pick My Project website (www.pickmyproject.vic.gov.au) to register and select their community by searching for their street address or suburb or by dropping a pin on the map. The government has allocated $30 million to be divided between six metropolitan and nine regional areas, with at least $1 million in funding available for the inner metro region. Project ideas with the most votes in each area will be offered between $20,000 and $200,000. Voting closes 5pm on September 17.

Josh Lefers of Footscray, Stephen Wools of West Footscray and Benjamin Cairns of Yarraville, the owners of brewing company East 9th Brewing, are colouring more than 100,000 of their iconic Doss Blockos brown-paper bags blue to help raise funds and awareness for the Polished Man campaign. Polished Man is an organisation seeking to end violence against children. Campaign participants paint a fingernail blue to start conversations that drive awareness and fundraising for the one child who dies every five minutes because of violence.

Mr Cairns said the team was taking the blue theme one step further, distributing the Polished Man blue bags to bars, clubs, restaurants and retailers across the country. “It’s a huge job, but well worth it to help raise awareness of this important issue,” he said. Mr Lefers said East 9th Brewing is supporting the campaign as part of its ambition to have a positive impact on society. New direction for arts festival By Benjamin Millar The west’s biggest contemporary arts producer has taken the reins of the area’s newest arts festival. Maribyrnong council has awarded Footscray Community Arts Centre the tender to produce the Due West Arts Festival, a biennial event launched last year to fill the gap left by the sudden demise of the 20-year-old Big West Festival.

FCAC director Martin Paten said as the biggest presenter of contemporary and community arts in Melbourne’s west, the centre was well placed to help deliver the festival. “Our vision is to create a festival program that is inspired by the artists, community, character and spirit of the west,” he said. “We look forward to sharing our plans with the local community and residents over the coming months.” The festival will receive $85,000 in annual

funding from Maribyrnong council and a further $110,000 from the state government through Creative Victoria. Maribyrnong mayor Cuc Lam said the next Due West Arts Festival should run over 10 days in November 2019, bringing together local artists, organisations and venues. “This event further cements Maribyrnong’s reputation as a destination for world-class festivals that create great memories, inspire a sense of place and belonging, and stimulate

economic activity through cultural activity,” she said. Creative Industries Minister Martin Foley said FCAC is set to take Due West “in an exciting direction”. “FCAC has an impressive track record of creating and presenting high quality contemporary art experiences.” FCAC will appoint an executive producer for the 2019 festival. Applications close 5pm Thursday, August 23.

A celebration of place A skip bin full of cardboard bound for recycling has inspired a colourful new exhibition in Footscray by artist Frances Loriente. Loriente was volunteering at Yarraville charitable organisation Foodbank when the patterns and colours made by the discarded cardboard packing caught her eye. She began retrieving bits and pieces with the brightest colouring and most interesting patterns to collage into kaleidoscopic sculptural forms. As a daughter of immigrant parents, Loriente found the food packing a way to expressing her European heritage while exploring Australian imagery, flora, fauna and landscapes. “I’m creating a unifying imagery that both celebrates the place we are along with the heritage we carry within us,” she said. “It is representative of the multicultural melting pot that is modern Australia.” The exhibition will run at the Bluestone Church Art Space from Wednesday until Sunday.

From 5.30-8pm Saturday, Loriente will run a cardboard collage workshop for adults, with all materials provided. To coincide with the exhibition, Indigenous musical icon Bart Willoughby, of the legendary No Fixed Address, will run a musical workshop on Saturday and a public performance on Sunday. From 2.30-4.30pm Saturday, the world-renowned drummer and multiinstrumentalist is hosting a percussion workshop for people aged 12 and above. From 3-7pm Sunday, Willoughby will be joined by band members Selwyn Burns on guitar and Phil Bywater on sax, bringing a mixture of old and new reggae infused tracks from his catalogue. West rallies for farmers A group of businesses in the west, including Point Cook’s Agfab Engineering, are pooling their resources to help drought-stricken farmers in New South Wales. Agfab director John Frattin and his son Joe will donate 100 bales of hay to farmers in Broken Hill, through Rural Aid Australia’s Buy a Bale initiative. The two men were on site as the hay was harvested and baled at their family’s property in Little River on Friday, before being loaded onto semi-trailers. Mr Frattin said some employees donated their time to drive the hay to Broken Hill. Semi Skel Hire in Laverton, Green Crop Products in Hoppers Crossing and Damorange Refrigerated Transport in Werribee South have also lent vehicles to help transport the hay, while Western Industrial Plumbing Service, Selman Brothers, JDK Management and Matt Brown – some of which are based as far away as Shepparton – also helped out with transport. Joe said that since he began talking about donating the hay, the businesses of AIRR, Jamac Earthmoving and Plant Hire, Designer Look Kitchens, A1 Custom Rides, Sign Raizor and Wallington Rural and Garden Supplies had donated dog food and horse chaff to be transported to New South Wales. Werribee South’s Christou Farms, D. Berias & Sons, Fresh Select and Patsuris Premium Produce have also donated boxes of vegetables to help feed the farmers, with Kalafatis Coolstores, R. Hasan & Co and Spencer Ranch also making donations.

Workers rise against hunger By Goya Dmytryshchak A total of 50,000 meals for people in need were packed at the Kraft Heinz distribution centre at Altona on Friday. Since 2013, the company has partnered with not-for-profit philanthropic organisation Rise Against Hunger to provide micronutrient meals for communities around the world. Kraft Heinz Australia chief executive Bruno Lino said the company’s global pledge was to donate one billion nutritious meals to people in need by 2021. “Our employees are extremely proud to be able to help some of the many people currently impacted by hunger all over the world,” he said. “It shows that no matter where you are, there is always an opportunity to make a positive impact.” Micronutrient meals include rice, dried vegetables and more than 23 vitamins and minerals. One meal provides an entire day’s worth of nutrition. Rise Against Hunger, formerly Stop Hunger Now, was founded in 1998 and mobilises people to distribute food globally. Council turns down tunnel trucks By Goya Dmytryshchak Hobsons Bay council has refused to grant a state government contractor permission to block several streets for construction of the West Gate Tunnel. Hobsons Bay’s infrastructure and city services director Sanjay Manivasagasivam told last week’s council meeting that several requests had been received for construction vehicle access through local roads.

He said the council had refused some of the requests due to a resolution passed at its July 10 meeting, which stated in part that local streets and roads were not to be blocked to local traffic during construction. “I can give you one example,” Mr Manivasagasivam said. “One of them is The Avenue, the closure of The Avenue for underground powerline works. “That’s the submission we got from the contractor, so we have refused that as per the

council resolution previously. However, if it’s on the other side, because it’s a different contractor, we would have given that approval.” The council heard there were “practical difficulties” in implementing a blanket ban on road closures because of the size of the project. The council is continuing to advocate for on and off ramps at Grieve Parade and Dohertys Road to be included in the project, to mitigate truck traffic on Millers Road. It previously resolved to demand “premium

rates” from the government to compensate for “occupation” of its land to build the tunnel. The council has demanded the government immediately start the design and construction of a pavilion promised at Donald McLean Reserve. The council has also insisted that storm water harvesting for irrigation be included in open space projects such as Donald McLean Reserve, Westgate Golf Club, Brooklyn Reserve, Crofts Reserve and Hosken Reserve.

Sons back their own After suffering a stroke that nearly claimed his life, Altona Meadows’ Greg Sturrock turned to Sons of the West for support. Mr Sturrock was talking to his sister on May 21, 2017 when he put his cup of coffee down and his “face dropped”. His wife, Marlene, recalls the conversation at the hospital. “They came back and told us that we’ve got two choices,” she said. “One choice was to let him go, let him die, or [two] to have the craniotomy, because his brain had started to bleed and swell, and he’d probably end up in a nursing home. “I ended up going to him and saying ‘this is the situation, what do you want to do’. And he said, ‘go for it’.” Mr Sturrock, now 56, was undergoing rehabilitation at Williamstown when someone suggested he join the Sons of the West men’s health program run by the Western Bulldogs Community Foundation. “I said, ‘I need a buddy because I’ve lost 90

per cent of my vision’,” he said. He was introduced to Truganina resident Andrew Reader, who had become a mentor after five years in the program. “Andrew explained all the exercises to me and made sure that I didn’t bump into everybody,” Mr Sturrock said. “He’d take me to the side and work one-on-one. “I went back to the therapy at Williamstown and they were amazed at my progress.” Mr Reader, who still catches up with Mr Sturrock each week, said his role was to support men when they first started out. “It’s a bit daunting when you first roll up and there’s a room full of strangers,” he said. “But it doesn’t take long before you find out they’re all like-minded, they all like a laugh.” Details: www.sonsofthewest.org.au Goya Dmytryshchak Andrew Reader helps Greg Sturrock punch on for his rehabilitation (Damjan Janevski)

Laverton North energy plant bid By Alesha Capone Wyndham council has received a planning application for an energy recovery plant in Laverton North that would generate enough electricity to power 16,000 to 20,000 houses a day. Recovered Energy Australia director Ian Guss said the plant would be worth “in the order of around $100 million”. The plant would operate 24/7 and provide employment for between 15 and 25 people. The facility, which would be a first of its

kind in Australia, would convert up to 200,000 tonnes of general household domestic waste a year into about 10 megawatts of baseload renewable energy to be fed back into the grid. Mr Guss said the waste gasification-toenergy process was used throughout Asia and the Middle East. He said it met Victorian operational and environmental standards and was “an economically viable alternative for municipal

waste disposal”. “We believe this is going to be a community solution to a community problem,” he said. Mr Guss said the application would be made available for public consultation as part of the EPA and council processes. A public meeting will be held at the Wyndham Eco-Living Centre, 28 Ridge Drive, Wyndham Vale, on Thursday, August 23, from 7pm to give residents an update on the proposal.

Futcher’s future in focus Yarraville actor Josh Futcher is hoping for a repeat of his Cannes success as he knocks on the doors of Hollywood. Futcher was the star of short fim Repetez S’il-Vous-Plait (Repeat Please), which scored a silver award in the recent Straight8 competition at the Cannes Film Festival. He said the film was shot on a single super 8mm cartridge on a Super 8 camera, with no post-production allowed – the film had to be shot in sequence with no room for errors or re-takes. Futcher said his reputation for being an actor who didn’t require many takes for a scene helped him to land the part in the film, which centres on a filmmaker running late for his film’s screening at Cannes. “My character is a director, he slept through his alarm and we see him wake up late and running through the city,” he said. “I get there just in time to watch my film’s opening title, we then see shot for shot everything we have just seen.” Futcher’s character turns slowly to look

behind him, gazing into the camera as it cuts to black. He said a handful of people have guessed how the film could have been created without editing, but many are still perplexed as to how it was done. The film’s success at Cannes has helped Futcher catch the eye of talent scouts and paved the way to the next chapter of his acting career. The 33-year-old has enjoyed success to date in local short films and television, including a role in big-budget Foxtel mini-series Conspiracy 365, but is looking to move into comedy and feature film. “At that time there was only a small amount of female rowing, now our membership is about 55 per cent female.” Membership used to also dwindle once young people grew up and moved away from the area or became caught up in study and

work, but recent years have seen a resurgence of interest from older rowers. “What we call Masters rowing, for people older than 30, has now taken off as a leisurely pursuit,” Mr Bourke said. “The average age here now would be 35. We

Footscray City Rowing Club is merrily putting the finishing touches on a history of the club as it celebrates 125 years. Kevin Bourke, a former president and current vice-president, said rowing has a rich past in Footscray stretching back almost 150 years. “The Footscray Rowing Club was formed in 1873, they lasted 20 years until their demise,” he said. “That club was abandoned and a new club arose out of that and has been going ever since – so there has actually been rowing in Footscray for 145 years.” Mr Bourke has been working since last December on a history of the club. His own long-running involvement puts him in the perfect place to delve into the past. “I started off here as a coxswain when I was 12 years of age, I’ve been here ever since,” he said. “I’m 79 now, so I’ve been here for more than half the time the club has been here.” Mr Bourke said despite the changes in the area and the make-up of the club over that time, there were a number of threads that have run through the history since the beginning. “They were mainly tradespeople in those days, anyone who joined the club lived within a few kilometres of the club,” he said. “There was conflict in the early days between bona fide amateurs and people who earned their living by manual labour – in the late 1800s people didn’t want to race against people they thought had a physical advantage. “It still is a working class club, there are people who are white collar workers now, but our members still come from around here.” A big change for the better was the opening of the club to women and girls from 1980. A women’s team was briefly involved in social

Car wreckers clean up their act By Tate Papworth Western suburbs car wreckers are getting their environmental compliance into gear. The Officer for the Protection of the Local Environment (OPLE) program has yielded significant results across Brimbank and Hobsons Bay. Brimbank and Hobsons Bay OPLE Claire Sonego has been visiting car wrecking and scrap metal businesses to get them to reduce stormwater contamination caused by

oil and fuel run off. Ms Sonego, who has been visiting businesses since early this year, said many had made changes that would have positive flow-on effects on wetlands. A Williamstown North business was issued a clean up notice and a pollution abatement notice in April. This month, it passed the follow up inspection. “A joint inspection uncovered oil was leaking from skip bins full of engines and seeping into

a stormwater pit,” Ms Sonego said. “I issued a clean-up notice to remove the oil on the ground and install controls to prevent oil running into the pit. “The wreckers also backed on to a creek

that flows into a nearby marine sanctuary and wetlands conservation reserve, so it was important we got the leak fixed.” Brimbank mayor Margaret Giudice said the program had a vital role in helping the council achieve its environmental goals. “Brimbank has invested significant time and resources to ensure the OPLE officer role is effective and achieves good environmental outcomes,” she said. Earlier this month, the program was extended until July, 2019.

Project warms the soul VCAL students at the Wyndham Community and Education Centre have been cooking up a storm to raise funds for a cause close to their hearts. Teenagers from the centre’s VCAL English as an Alternative Language class have launched a project to raise money for Amnesty International’s efforts to support the 700,000 Rohingya refugees living in Bangladesh, near the Myanmar border. The Winter Warmer Comfort Food project involves the students cooking meals which are then sold for $5 to the centre’s other students, staff and organisations in Wyndham. Teacher Julie-Anne Bennett said many of the students involved in the project were refugees themselves. “We are very proud of the class because they have been so proactive about the need to help the Rohingya,” she said. The comfort food project has been well received and attracted the attention of

proprietor and head chef of Laverton’s Little Mekong Restaurant, Jensen Lam. Mr Lam last week dropped in to teach the students how to make sweet corn and chicken soup to add to their menu. Ms Bennett said the community’s response to the cause had been “great”. To order a Winter Warmer Comfort Food meal, contact Ms Bennett on julieanneb@ wyndhamcec.org.au. Alesha Capone

Flemings Pool concept plan for community feedback. (Picture: Hobsons Bay City Council)

Flemings platform plan Hobsons Bay council is calling for community feedback on a planned viewing platform at a popular Altona beach swimming spot. Flemings Pool, at the end of Millers Road, is named after the Fleming family that, in 1915, removed rocks to create a swimming hole. Last year, the council built a 45-metre stormwater pipe encased in a revetment and placed rocks at the site to stop erosion. As reported by Star Weekly, talks were held between councillors, residents and traders in response to calls to remove the rocks and restore the beach to a sandy state. Ward councillor Tony Briffa said the council is working hard to preserve the swimming spot. “Council has developed a concept design option that is based on our previous community

engagement on Flemings Pool, as well as on a recent piece of research about its very unique marine climate,” Cr Briffa said. “The … design has some great features, such as a tiered seating area that will also serve as a wave deflector to help protect the seawall.” The platform is expected to be built by summer. Information sessions will be held on Thursday, August 23, 4-6pm in Meeting Room 3 at the Hobsons Bay Civic Centre and on Saturday, August 25, 9-11am in Fraser Reserve, corner of Millers Road and Esplanade, Altona. Trainer jailed for LSD imports By Benjamin Millar A Maidstone personal trainer has been sentenced to six years in prison after pleading guilty to importing LSD into Australia via a series of mail shipments. Daniel Di Giorgio-Yates, a 41-year-old UK citizen and father of three, faces a non-parole period of three years and likely deportation following his prison term. The County Court of Victoria earlier this year heard that in January 2016, Australia Border Force officials seized a parcel from a Tottenham

post office box leased by Di Giorgio-Yates that contained 200 square paper tabs containing LSD that had been mailed from Poland. The following month the ABF seized a parcel from China addressed to Di Giorgio-Yates’ Maidstone home containing a motorcycle muffler hiding a bag containing 9.7 grams of powder that tested as 70 per cent pure LSD. Another parcel sent to the Tottenham post office box in March contained more white powder revealed to be 67 per cent pure LSD. Di Giorgio-Yates was arrested on March 30, 2016.

Police raided his home and seized two laptop computers as well as a credit card which had been used to buy equipment used to dispense liquid LSD onto sheets of blotting paper. An examination of the laptops showed Di Giorgio-Yates had visited websites about sourcing and importing LSD, advice about delivering the purchases, information on sentencing for drug offences and general advice about LSD and its use. Two further envelopes of LSD shipments were also later seized on arrival at the post

office box after the arrest. Di Giorgio-Yates was charged with importing up to 7.28 grams of pure LSD, more than 3.5 times the commercial quantity threshold. The court heard Di Giorgio-Yates was born and raised in the UK and moved to Australia in 2009. In sentencing Di Giorgio-Yates last month, judge Richard Smith noted he had a history of drug abuse in early adulthood and he began importing LSD in the hope it would treat his physical and mental health issues.

Williamstown’s Heather and Michael Jobling will join thousands of others for A Walk in the Park this Sunday in support of people living with Parkinson’s. Ms Jobling, who founded the first ParkinSong Victoria singing group for people with Parkinson’s, was diagnosed with the progressive neurological disease in 2006. In 2013, she underwent brain surgery to reduce her reliance on medication, which she was taking every three hours. She now has two electrodes in her brain, which connect to a neurostimulator. Ms Jobling will participate in the walk on her motorised scooter named Freda, or in a wheelchair if it’s raining. “I’m still able to be as active as I can, with limitations. The walk is a really good opportunity for fundraising and to bring awareness to the community about Parkinson’s,” she said.

Melbourne University researchers have found that singing activities such as the ParkinSong groups – which have grown to nine statewide – help people with symptoms such as difficulty with speech and swallowing. “When you’re singing, it seems as though the brain just tunes in,” Ms Jobling said. “It’s amazing, really.” This year marks the 10th anniversary of the annual walk. Parkinson’s Victoria chief executive Emma Collin said about 22,660 people had joined the walks since their inception in 2009. “This year, we hope to bring that total to 27,000, which represents the number of Victorians living with Parkinson’s,” she said. A Walk in the Park starts at Federation Square at 11am on August 26. To register or donate, visit parkinsonswalk.org.au.

Fabian Capomolla has a hunger for gardening. The passionate gardener and author is coming to Altona North next month to talk about his best-selling book, Growing Food the Italian Way. In 2014, Capomolla took his young family to live in Italy for one year, reconnecting with his familial roots. His book celebrates eating seasonal locally-grown food and providing food for oneself, the family and the community. “My true obsession for growing edibles started when my nonno bought around some tomato seedlings when I first moved out of home,” Capomolla said.

A place made in heaven Priscilla Moca discovers the power of nature in New Zealand. New Zealand, you mountainous miracle – how did I not find you earlier? You’re so much more than Australia’s colder cousin, with your peculiar beasts and abundance of adventure. Jandals and sky-high petrol prices aside, I pity the Australian who chooses not to explore across the ditch.

Landscape

The panorama at Roys Peak summit takes in surrounding peaks and most of Lake Wanaka. (Mark Santomartino)

Mother Nature must have doted on New Zealand – with rolling hills and black sand beaches in the north, and towering glaciers in the south. After a day basking in hot springs and sulfur steam at Rotorua, we took on Tongariro Alpine Crossing. Strong winds were forecast, but we pushed on, seeing blue skies and calm conditions. We learnt our lesson as we closed in on the Red Crater at 1886-metres high. Savage gusts bowled us over and stole my hat, and we had to turn back. The five-hour return helped us reflect on our foolishness, and take in the incredible sight of New Zealand’s most active volcano, Mount Ruapehu. It is even more imposing when you learn it last erupted in 2007. We basked in the beauty of the country’s largest body of water, Lake Taupo, from kayaks. Wet cold feet weren’t enough to dampen the serenity as we marvelled at the vast blue surrounding us. Its beauty was pipped by another lake - Lake Wanaka. The town, spread along the water’s edge, is nestled between towering mountains. While it’s less touristy than Queenstown, there’s plenty to do. It’s a hikers’ paradise, with dozens of walks close by. We climbed Roys Peak

in a frantic rush to beat the sunset, and it left us breathless in more ways than one. It is a steep climb which makes you wish you made more effort at the gym, but the 16-kilometre trek is worth it. The panorama at its summit takes in surrounding peaks and most of Lake Wanaka. Wanaka also proved a great base for other day hikes, including Mount Cook, New Zealand’s tallest mountain. The treacherous Cook can only be climbed in summer, so we opted for the Hooker Valley track. It wound through alpine streams fed by the Mueller Glacier, and was a wonderful way to take in the mountain. The track ends at Hooker Lake, a stunning shade of grey-blue with floating icebergs.

Awesome animals and funky food

Sheep are a staple sight, but we noticed plenty of other wildlife across the islands. No surprise, since animals make up 95 per cent of New Zealand’s population. The Arnold Schwarzenegger of insects, the weta, took a liking to my leg in Wellington. The world’s heaviest insect is like an oblivious visitor who won’t go home, and I carried him around Mt Victoria. We encountered a more slithery sort of critter at the Waitamo Caves, where thousands of glow worms thrive. It is disturbing to learn their poo makes them glow, but doesn’t make their galaxy any less impressive. We also had the pleasure of seeing wild baby goats in Queenstown. Two weeks old and stumbling around, they were the most adorable kids I’ve ever seen. Including the human sort. All the goat gushing fuelled our appetites, and as Melburnians, we gravitated towards the lengthy line at Ferg Burger. After wondering

TRAVEL

‘how good could a burger be?’, I got my answer. Heavenly. I was brought back to earth by a distinctive fruit called the feijoa. My poor tongue grappled to comprehend a tangy mix of perfume and pineapple as it met this NZ favourite. I’m glad the kiwifruit caught on in Australia, but our neighbours can keep their green delicacy.

Thrills

It’s hard to visit Queenstown without

developing a baseless sense of bravado and deciding to jump from great height. We chose the original Kawarau Bridge Bungy, and it was with great trepidation we arrived that morning. Ignoring advice to look ahead, I maintained a solid stare at the 43-metre drop. Several false starts saw me insist my shoes weren’t tight enough, cling to the bungee operator’s pants and regret my choice. Some gentle coaxing to the edge, and before I knew it I was leaping with my hands up, in

what was described by the bungee operator as “like a meerkat”. They’re graceful, right? As our adrenaline levels returned to base, we signed on to the Shotover Canyon Swing. It’s an 109 metre drop, where you’ll hit a speed of 150 kilometres an hour before becoming a pendulum between two cliffs. A tip here – the eagle-eyed crew delight at your terror, so do not ask them to go easy on you. It spurs them on, so while you’re thinking of a comeback they will send you falling into the abyss. Also, it’s free if you do it naked. Great if you’re game, but don’t be an obnoxious tourist and try to barter a half-price swing by going topless. Not cool. Not every activity has to terrify, and we gladly indulged in other pursuits, including a wine tasting at Rippon vineyards at Lake Wanaka. The sips were that much sweeter against a backdrop of snow-capped mountains. It’s a moment that captures the land of the long white cloud, perfectly balancing the awesome power of nature with a taste of modern life.

MY PLACE Altona Meadows’ Hugh Deacon is devoted to exercise classes which he believes help keep him healthy. He speaks with Goya Dmytryshchak.

What do you like about living in Altona Meadows? There’s the Laverton Community Hub. It has activities. I do zumba three times a week. I do pilates, yoga, tai chi. It’s all subsidised. I’m on a pension. Two dollars a session. It’s not a designer gym, there’s no membership fee and it caters for all the community. There’s Muslim women there who don’t feel threatened by other people. There’s a good medical centre up at Central Square. Being a superclinic, I thought there’d be big waiting lists but it’s just excellent. We’ve got a choice of four libraries nearby: Altona Meadows, Altona, Altona North and Newport. Within walking distance of the railway station for public transport. I’ve got the beach, free parking, no crowds. I grew up in Bondi so I’ve always liked the water and Altona is just the undiscovered jewel of the west. What don’t you like? People that put rubbish out, that dump rubbish when they vacate rented properties. That’s probably my main bugbear. And people who smoke and flick cigarette butts. Just general not respecting the environment and the area.

What’s your favourite local cafe or eatery? Probably Bezirk down in Millers Road. It’s close to the beach. I swim down there summer and winter and it’s really nice to come out and have a coffee and they do a great egg and bacon roll. Can you tell me about your journey with cancer and how the activities you do have helped? Apart from cancer, 10 years ago I had a stroke at the local shopping centre. I was getting into the car and realised something was wrong and went to the pharmacy. They rang for an ambulance, it was almost an immediate response. I had no side effects from that. I’ve got a pacemaker, a stent. I’ve got severe sleep apnoea, an irregular heartbeat. And then when they diagnosed I had cancer, they fast-tracked me into the Royal Melbourne because they probably knew I was going to survive. They removed half my lung; there was no chemo, no radiation. I was at the hub prior to that doing zumba and all these other exercises. Just the community love and care from people there and the different exercises I do help me. The zumba’s cardio, pilates gives you strength, yoga is breathing and tai chi is relaxation and mindfulness. I’ll be 80 in a couple of years – I can’t believe it. I’ve found exercise I enjoy. If I was to go and play golf, I couldn’t hit a golf ball to save my life and it would put me in a bad mood.

(Joe Mastroianni)

What’s your connection to Hobsons Bay? I’ve been here probably 30 years. I’m president of the Laverton Community Choir. I’m an active member of the Queen of Peace church; I do readings there now as well.

Do you have a particular philosophy? I count my blessings every morning.

DKO Architecture, landscape design firm Jack Merlo and Evolve Developments have collaborated to create a bespoke development of 48 stunning townhouses that evoke the mood of Footscray’s industrial past yet are future-forward with a focus on green spaces. GREAT ARCHITECTURE AND OUTDOOR SPACES

A CONNECTED SPACE TO CALL HOME

A boutique collection of red-brick terrace homes that unite past and present, John & Windsor borrows from the neighbourhood’s rich Victorian heritage then reinterprets design and detail to deliver a living experience unseen before in the West.

Connected and social, Footscray is a multicultural hub, home to Melbourne’s favourite new eateries, cafes and bars only five kilometres from the CBD.

Two, three and four bedroom residences each express their own distinct personality, inspired by the residential and industrial landscape that characterises Melbourne’s bustling inner-west precinct. Three Sixty Property group director Evan Cathcart says, “As well as standout street appeal, premium quality materials and modern interiors, the green spaces are a real asset and focus of the development.” Evan describes the development as being “enveloped in lush greenery to introduce layers of tranquil and private spaces that provide a relaxing escape from the urban environment.” He goes on to explain how the floor plans have been meticulously considered to create a connection and flow between the interiors and the layered landscaping by Jack Merlo. “John & Windsor is a community where sustainability, nature, privacy and security co-exist with open-plan design and seamless indoor-outdoor living.”

“There’s a strong sense of community in Footscray that locals love and it’s growing year-on-year as the gentrification continues to evolve in the area,” Evan says. INTERIORS From the ground up, each level has clear purpose and generous spatial design offering extra space for entertaining and family life. “Living areas flow across the second level with places to cook, dine, entertain and relax. Private retreats take in the views from the third floor which has generous bedrooms, en suite and bathroom,” Evan says. “Timber floors, stone features and metal accents bring elements of nature inside. Finished in a choice of classic or contemporary colour options, the design blends raw and refined textures with considered premium appointments.” DELIVERY The development is due for completion in 2019. Price: $3 million – $3.3 million

Price: $1.6 million

It has been utterly transformed. It is stately, it is of the most impeccable quality, it’s on-trend (and it has four bedrooms, three bathrooms, an amazing kitchen and pool). Yes, for those shopping in this bracket and looking for your ‘nothing-to-do forever home’ then this may be it. With a stunning updated Edwardian facade and a garden to match, enter to a hall where you can picture small children, then teenagers, and the young families to follow with small children of their own. There is a dedicated theatre room, two further living zones, including the open-plan kitchen, meals and lounge area. The large garden is gorgeous. Enjoy entertaining in the summer months and holding pool parties. Guest quarters above the double garage are perfect for an au pair or family accommodation.

This welcoming and well-fitted residence, surrounded by other great properties, is beautifully designed and offers a great lifestyle with city views all within a five minute stroll to The Strand. The position is fantastic, with views of Newport Park from the study on entry and from the deep balcony upstairs. The single garage has internal access and the hall, with hardwood floors, leads to the main bedroom with an en suite and two sets of built-in robes plus access to the study. Three more bedrooms are on the second level, are carpeted and have built-in robes. There are two living areas, one downstairs, one upstairs, with a smaller kitchen upstairs for when the family wants to enjoy the view. All the fittings are high-spec. It’s an easy-to-live-in house close to the local cafe and gym.

This good-looking, traditionally-influenced townhouse with a deep front deck, has all the stars you’re looking for – hardwood floors, large living areas, and three good-sized bedrooms with built-in robes. Set at the rear of the block, it is private – and gated. All fittings and fixtures are timeless yet contemporary. With a good-sized courtyard, a lock-up garage and multiple split-systems, here is a great property for those wanting everything the Spotswood lifestyle has to offer.

On a large block of about 775 square metres and with some great improvements this house has plenty of promise. Set in the heart of Altona Meadows it has a timber gate beyond the double carport, a feature brass fireplace flute, a two car shed-style garage-cum workshop and an undercover back deck. There are five carpeted bedrooms with built-in robes (the main bedroom with an en suite and a walk-in robe), two separate living areas, and a large kitchen, with hardwood timber cabinetry and good bench space, off a meals area. Close to Queen of Peace and Altona Green primary schools, bike paths and loads of parkland.

Buying a warehouse – or renting? It just depends … According to industry experts, there’s no “right” answer for when a business needs to consider the benefits of leasing or purchasing a warehouse property. Some believe leasing is cheaper, while others consider that is not always the case because lease obligations can be similar to those of purchasing. Whatever decision is taken, it’s essential that advice from a solicitor and accountant is sought.

What are the pros of purchasing?

a) Tax perks: Owners can claim tax deductions for costs associated with owning, operating and maintaining a business premises. b) Fixed costs: A long-term fixed commercial mortgage can give a business certainty. c) Access to equity: Properties may be able to be used as guarantees in business dealings with suppliers, clients or partners. d) Financing: Using a mortgage loan, monthly payments may end up similar or even lower than lease payments. a) Freeing up capital: Capital not tied up in a deposit for a property may be used for other opportunities. b) Choice of location: Leasing allows a greater choice of properties in prime locations. It may be more affordable for some businesses, such as retail. c) Faster response: Leasing can enable a business to be more responsive to needs – such as moving to larger premises. d) Business focus: The focus can be on developing a business rather than on managing a property.

(iStock)

What are the pros of leasing?

Other points

1. If a business is well established and planning on staying for longer than 10 years, buying a warehouse can be a real estate investment. If a business

is specialised with unique fit-out and machinery, improvements to the premises may need to be undertaken. 2. If a warehouse is being used as a general or distribution facility, with easily replaced

fit-out, leasing may be more cost effective. Leasing is usually preferred for businesses that don’t want to use their capital on real estate investment and for those not sure how much space they will eventually need.

Showcasing the year’s best political cartoons, The Three-Ring Circus captures a world where fact and fiction collide and ringmasters, jugglers and acrobats have all stepped into the political Big Top. This year provided a cavalcade of political characters and plenty of sensational events to capture the imagination of cartoonists and the public alike. There was citizenship chaos, calls for constitutional reform and a postal plebiscite. The federal Budget caught attention with its invitation to consider both ‘good debt’ and ‘bad debt’ and Donald Trump dominated front pages with his compelling Twitter habit and outspoken responses. With its many tumultuous events, 2017 was another rich year for our nation’s political cartoonists who continue look behind the lines of the daily political sideshows to capture the spirit of our democracy in all its passion, scepticism and humour. ‘Behind the Lines’ is a travelling exhibition developed by Museum of Australian Democracy at Old Parliament House, proudly supported by the National Collection Institutions Touring and Outreach program, an Australian Government program aiming to improve access to the national collections for all Australians. SPORT Falcons hold on for elimination showdown quarter, we were letting the ball go a bit quicker and we got a run on. “They made a lot of changes and we had a bit more confidence to get out to a six goal buffer. “They came back at us … The last three to four minutes we were able to steady.” Lind said while they were a young side, several players had played together for a number of years and that counted late in the game. Lind praised the efforts of goal attack Tahnysha Salanoa “T is a young goaler and she was able to hold her own under a lot of pressure,” Lind said. “She was able to keep her head up. They threw everything at her.” While finals are normally a pass mark for the Falcons, this year is different according to Lind.

The Falcons only got their best line-up on court six weeks ago and have been able to rise up the ladder to finish third. “It is definitely an over achievement,” Lind said. “We’re just happy to get there. “We’re really happy to get a team in finals with the year that we’ve had. “Anything else is a bonus. “It will be tough. There’s four to five quality sides in the league.” The Falcons play the Hawks in an elimination final on Wednesday night. The winner will play in a preliminary final on Sunday. When the two sides played each other in round 16 the Falcons came out on top, but the Hawks were without star shooter Kim Commane. Tara Murray

CYMS rises to challenge By Lance Jenkinson It was a proud weekend for Williamstown CYMS, deservedly sewing up the Victorian Amateur Football Association Premier C minor premiership. CYs coach Mathew Montebello said it was an honour that his club could “hang its hat on,” though one the players and coaches will have to move on quickly from. The CYs have been the most dominant team in the competition, winning 10 straight games and mostly with blowout margins. Their victory ensured that Fitzroy, who CYs beat by 22 points in the top of the table clash at Fearon Reserve on Saturday, would not take a psychological edge into September. Fitzroy was the last team to beat CYs way back in May. “They put their best foot forward to come and beat us,” Montebello said. “They wanted that psychological thing over us going into finals, that we hadn’t beaten them. “Credit to them, they brought it and they brought it hard, but it was really good for the boys to get that win for a bit of belief. “We know that we can beat them and we know how we can beat them, so it’s about replicating it in the finals now.” Most importantly for Williamstown CYMS, it was another competitive game. The past two weeks, CYs have been made to earn their points, which is in stark contrast to most of their games this season. Montebello was concerned by how easily his team had cruised past the bulk of their opponents during this winning streak. “Of the 17 games that we’ve played, only five of them have been decided by five goals or under, every other game has been 10 goals or over,” he said. “We need these sort of games going into finals. It’s good that two weeks in a row the boys have been challenged that they’ve responded and responded well.” Montebello’s dampened enthusiasm for the minor premiership is borne out of recent history. The CYs players were quickly reminded of the hard work still ahead for them to reach the grand final. “I keep reminding the boys, the previous three years, twice we’ve seen the team that finished on top get knocked out in straight sets,” Montebello said. What Montebello was not playing down was CYs big win over Fitzroy. This was a significant hurdle for the CYs players to overcome. “It was a great team effort,” he said. “There was contributors across the board.” None were bigger than Tom Johnstone. Johnstone, one of the form players in the competition, refused to yield to the extra attention put on him by the Fitzroy midfielders.

IN THE DOGHOUSE ■ I have always believed that the Coach of the Year title should go to the bloke who holds the cup up on grand final day, but that is not always the case as the announcement precedes that one day in September and, like the team of the year, is based on performances in the home and away season. Last year there was a very strong case for Brendan Hallinan of Sunshine to get the gong, especially with his team going within a whisker of premiership glory. Marc Bullen from Deer Park was named, and deserved it, with his team losing only two games during the regular season. This year I am glad not to be part of the panel making the choice because it is a very close call. With one game to go, the top four teams are separated by one loss: Altona (14-3),Hoppers Crossing (13-3-1), Werribee Districts (12-3-2) and Deer Park (13-4). Any one of the four coaches –Saade Ghazi, Steve Kretiuk, Chris Gilham and Marc Bullen – would be a deserving winner. ■ Sunshine’s Brendan Hallinan has announced he is standing down after this weekend. I wish him well and compliment him on a great job with the Kangaroos. This season has not gone according to plan after going so close in 2017. ‘Barney’ might be walking away without a cup, but he has left a mark at the club, which now knows it can win that elusive flag. If it can keep the core of its playing group and maintain that hard edge to its game, a bit of glory might not be far away. ■ Andre ‘The Giant” Meunier is not a household name in Australia but the four-time world kickboxing champion is big news in Asia, where he is one of the star performers on the One Championship circuit. His next bout is October 6 as part of an event billed as the Kingdom of Heroes at Impact Stadium in Bangkok. While he hardly warrants a sideways glance walking through Pacific Werribee, where he first met James Roesler his manager and trainer, it is a different story in Asia where fans line up for selfies and autographs. Andre is in full training at the Ultimate Kickboxing Gym in Hoppers Crossing for his upcoming bout. Famous for being the man Barry Hall didn’t fight in the ring when the former AFL star was contemplating a boxing career, Andre hopes to make his mark overseas, which might give his sport some positive attention closer to home.

What Williamstown CYMS ruckman Sam Callard gave away in centimetres, he made up for with his spring-heeled leap. (Damjan Janevski)

“Second week in a row, he was by far the best on ground,” Montebello said. “He’s gone to another level over the past month. “He was heavily targeted, but he just bounces up and keeps going. I think Fitzroy threw multiple blokes at him, they had blokes hanging off him, but he just takes them into the contest and next minute it’s another clearance.”

Other keys to the CYs victory were ruckman Sam Callard, stepping up admirably in the absence of the injured Dylan Jones, Yuma Hemphill and Russell Ackerly, dominant in the middle, and Jack Noonan, dangerous up forward. Williamstown CYMS will travel to Old Geelong in the last round before finals.

City West Falcons timed their run for Victorian Netball League championship division finals to perfection. With a win in their final match of the season enough to guarantee a finals spot, the Falcons had everything on the line against the DC North East Blaze on Wednesday night. The Blaze faced the same scenario, making the match a virtual elimination final. Although the Falcons led at every break they couldn’t break the game open, with the result decided in the final few minutes. The Falcons held their composure to win 60-57. Falcons coach Marg Lind said it was a period in the third quarter that proved to be the difference. “It was a quality game and finals worthy,” she said. “It was a five minute period in the third

Top four spot on the line for young Bulldogs Footscray will head to the Hockey Victoria women’s premier league finals asking the question, ‘why not us?’. Entrenched in the top eight with one round to go, the young Bulldogs team is an impatient one that wants to deliver a premiership now. Bulldogs defender Carly James said the team is pushing towards one goal this season. “Everyone is there trying to get our club a premiership,” she said. “The club has been waiting a long time for it, so hopefully we can bring one home.” Footscray has been on the upper rungs of the ladder for most of the season. Recently, the Bulldogs have hit a flat patch, but they will get a huge boost with Hockeyroo Lily Brazel returning for the finals. James is excited by the growth that has taken place in a Bulldogs team that is still raw and would be considered before its time if it does go

on to win the premiership. “I think there’s a lot of potential because there’s so much improvement that can happen each week from each player,” she said. “We’re all working hard each week to keep improving and we’re only getting better.” Demonstrating how young Footscray’s line-up is, you only need to look at the fresh faces on the backline. James is the oldest player in the defence at 20 with the rest being teenagers. “There’s a couple of players pushing up around 23 or 24 in the midfield, but I’m the oldest at 20 in our backline,” she said. “We have an 18-year-old, two 17-year-olds and a 16-year-old, so it’s a young backline, but we all work together to improve each other.” The Bulldogs are giving themselves a chance of September success by following the instructions of coach Lachie Anderson to a tee.

Anderson has been a stable figure for the young Bulldogs to learn from. “His message is getting across because we’ve had a very consistent team for the past couple of years,” James said. “We’re playing the way Lachie wants us to play and it’s really helping us step up the ladder. “We’re wanting to be in the top four and giving it a good push in the finals.” To give themselves the best shot, Footscray will need to finish in the top four, which comes with the benefit of a double chance. The Bulldogs will face KBH Brumbies away at Elgar Park in the final home-and-away game on Saturday with a top four spot on the line. Winner-takes-all in final

By Lance Jenkinson Altona holds all the aces going into the last round of the Western Region Football League division 1. If the Vikings can beat Hoppers Crossing, they will secure the minor premiership and earn a free pass through to the second week of the finals. The Vikings will also hold an all-important double chance from that point on. But Altona will need to bring its A-game. If it loses on home soil to Hoppers Crossing this Saturday, it will be Hoppers that takes all the benefits into September. Altona and Hoppers Crossing set up their winner-takes-all final round showdown after leap-frogging defending premiers Deer Park in the penultimate round on Saturday. “It’s completely changed [the scenario] for both Hoppers and Altona,” Vikings coach Saade Ghazi said. “Finishing on top of the ladder is definitely an advantage and now we’ve got that chance.” Altona was made to work hard for its 27-point win over bottom-of-the-ladder Wyndhamvale in tough conditions at Wyndhamvale South Oval on Saturday. The Vikings had a small buffer on the scoreboard for most of the day, but only broke the game open in the last quarter, albeit with an inaccurate 1.9 to 1.0 for the quarter. “They made us earn it,” Ghazi said. “It was tough, a good hit-out, which is what you need coming up to finals. “We were good enough at the end to win, which is the main thing, and got through with no injuries.” Mitch Turnbull was the game breaker for Altona. Turnbull set up the victory with strong first half play and finished with four goals. Turnbull is valuable for the Vikings because of his versatility. “We’ll start him most games forward, but we know we can also play him back and through the midfield,” Ghazi said. “We think Mitch is a really key player for us because he can play multiple positions.” Brett Shiels and Trent Rafferty were willing to put their heads over the ball, while Jack Marlais racked up plenty of touches through the midfield. Tom Szanyi produced a good negating role in the backline. Altona’s rise back up to the upper rungs of the ladder can be traced back to a bit of “soul searching” after last season. After making the preliminary final in 2016, the Vikings were tipped to contend last season, but failed to reach the finals in one of the disappointments of the season. “A lot of questions were asked from the coaching point of view and player point of view,” Ghazi said. “We knuckled down and did what we had to do. We brought a couple of new players into the club, not too many, we kept promoting our kids.

Lacrosse

Footscray has returned fire in its battle with Williamstown in the Lacrosse Victoria men’s state league. The Bulldogs got payback for their loss to the Fearons earlier in the season with a comfortable 12-7 victory at Fearon Reserve on Saturday. Kane Mollison and Chris Plumb proved hard to stop for the Bulldogs with four goals apiece. With one round to go, Williamstown and Footscray are secure in the top two and will face off in the semi-finals.

Grid Iron

Western Crusaders premiership defence is off to a flyer in the Grid Iron Victoria men’s division 1. The Crusaders have opened the season with two blow-out wins. On Saturday, the Crusaders recorded a 40-6 win over Ballarat at Brens Oval, backing up from their season opening 64-0 thumping of Monash Barbarians. The Crusaders next game will be a blockbuster on September 2 against Monash Warriors at Monash University.

Football

I know there’s a lot of footy still to be played, but we’ve got three sides sitting on top of the ladder, so the footy club is in a good position.” Meanwhile, Spotswood came away from its pre-finals tune-up with a 33-point win over Caroline Springs at Town Centre Oval. In a game with only six goals kicked due to the conditions, the Woodsmen defence held the Lakers to just one goal for the afternoon. The fifth-placed Woodsmen will host Werribee Districts at McLean Reserve on Saturday. Depending on results in the last

round, the two sides could meet in the elimination final a week later. In division 2, Parkside will meet Manor Lakes in the final round at Howqua Reserve on Saturday with the winner to advance to the finals. Both teams hold an 8-9 record after Parkside lost to North Footscray by 30 and Manor Lakes beat Newport Power by 20 in the penultimate round. In division 3, Braybrook sealed its finals berth with a 65-point win over Laverton.

Williamstown gave itself a chance of a top four finish in the Victorian Football League after an 18-point win over Port Melbourne at the Williamstown Football Ground on Sunday. Captain Adam Marcon capped a best-on-ground display for the Seagulls with three goals, while Lachie George and Sam Dunell kicked two apiece. With Collingwood and Box Hill breathing down their neck, the Seagulls will probably need to beat ladder leader Casey Demons in the final round at Casey Fields on Saturday to hold on to fourth. For Footscray to make the finals, they will need a win over Port Melbourne at the Whitten Oval on Saturday and keep their fingers crossed that eighth-placed Essendon is upset by the Northern Blues.
