Contamination fears By Goya Dmytryshchak The Department of Defence is investigating the extent of offsite contamination from chemicals found in firefighting foam used on the RAAF Base Williams at Laverton. A preliminary site investigation finalised last September found the presence of per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) at the base, prompting an investigation of the chemicals’ “migration” off base. A survey of how the local community uses or has used bore and surface water is set to start in the next quarter. The department may conduct sampling on private property.

‘‘

I wouldn’t have bought in the area if I knew

’’

- Joel Bennett

Luke McLeod, assistant secretary of the department’s PFAS Investigation and Management Program, told a community meeting in Laverton on Thursday there were three types of PFAS of concern if they got into drinking water, recreational water and soil. “We’re particularly interested in understanding how the community around RAAF Base Williams use water, how they’re interacting with water, whether they’ve got bores, whether they’re using bores for drinking purposes, whether they might be using it for irrigation purposes, etcetera,” he said. “There’s uncertainty about the health impact so we understand that can give rise to stress and anxiety around that uncertainty.” He said federal and state health bodies had found there was currently no consistent evidence that exposure to PFAS caused adverse health impacts, but that human exposure to these chemicals should be minimised as a precaution. A Federal Department of Health fact sheet distributed at the meeting stated there was “no conclusive evidence” that PFAS caused cancer although some studies had shown a possible link. A former firefighter on the base for 18 years, Werribee’s Mal Marsland-Kelsey, told the meeting the firefighting foams had been used sometimes two or three times a day and the fire trucks were hosed down daily. “We were instructed to use this chemical in the fire trucks,” he said. “We didn’t know whether it was safe or not. We understood it was safe.”

Mr Marsland-Kelsey, 76, said he only learned PFAS were dangerous when he got out of the air force. Resident Joel Bennett told the meeting that if he had known about the use of PFAS, he wouldn’t have moved to Laverton. “I’m within a kilometre of a contaminated area,” he said. “I wouldn’t have bought in the

area if I knew I was going to be living near a contaminated RAAF base.” Federal Lalor MP Joanne Ryan told the meeting she was concerned about offsite contamination, particularly as the base used to stretch to Williams Landing. “I think there might be several hundred farmers in Werribee South that might be

interested to know that they shouldn’t be using that water,” she said. Residents wanting to participate in the water use survey should contact the investigation team on 1800 549 828 or williams.defence@ aurecongroup.com/ Details: www.defence.gov.au/environment/ pfas/williams.

Dental wait list pain By Goya Dmytryshchak People in the Altona electorate are waiting more than two years for public dental health care, figures obtained under freedom of information show. The Australian Dental Association Victorian Branch obtained data that shows IPC Health in Altona Meadows and Hoppers Crossing had one of the state’s longest average waiting times for general dental treatment. The waiting time was 27.9 months for routine care including examination, cleaning, fillings, extractions and root canals. There was an average wait of 22.1 months for routine

provision of dentures. The clinics, which provide discounted dental care for people with healthcare cards, have 9175 people on a central waiting list. The Australian Dental Association Victorian Branch (ADAVB) obtained the data through an FoI request to Health Services Victoria. Statewide, the average wait was 19.7 months for general dental care and 17.1 months for denture care. ADAVB chief executive Matt Hopcraft said people eligible for public dental care might endure pain, have difficulty speaking and eating, miss school, struggle to find jobs or develop other serious health problems.

“We know that poor oral health is one of the strongest indicators of inequality and yet the waiting time for general dental care has increased 67 per cent since 2014-15,” he said. The association is calling for additional annual funding of $40 million over five years, lifting current funding from $240 million up to about $440 million. It is also calling for private-public partnerships with a focus on growth corridors of Melbourne and high-demand areas. “At current funding levels, only 16 per cent of people who are eligible to access public dental care in Victoria were able to see a dentist in any given year,” Mr Hopcraft said.

Explosive opening for Altona President Jack Hallowell said the site included the keeper’s residence, built in 1897, and 16 hectares of salt marsh and sand dunes. The site contains remnants from the magazine, earth mounds, an explosive testing shelter and tramway lines used to transport the explosives. “The ICI [former explosives factory in Deer Park] used to manufacture it and take it down to the Laverton railway station,” Mr Hallowell said. “Then there was draft horses that used to tow it up Merton Street.

Home to rare flora and fauna untouched for decades, the Truganina Explosives Reserve at Altona is to be opened to the public for guided tours. Behind a long corrugated iron fence on Queen Street lies the undisturbed reserve, once used to store explosives for civil use such as mining and quarrying. It operated from 1901-62. The Truganina Explosives Reserve Preservation Society has nominated the crown land for listing on the state heritage register.

“It was 555 acres [224.6 hectares] originally and we’re down to 16.5 hectares now.” The site is home to the orange bellied parrot and the Altona skipper butterfly. In 2000, the community campaigned to save the site from sale to developers and Hobsons Bay council was appointed to manage it. Guided tours will take place on October 7, November 4 and December 2 from 1-4pm. Details: ranger@hobsonsbay.vic.gov.au

Plea for stolen memories The parents of a young girl with a rare genetic condition have issued a heartfelt plea for the return of a stolen hard drive containing years of their family’s precious memories. A $1000 reward is being offered for the safe return of the portable hard drive, stolen from their Maidstone home during a brazen daylight burglary. Sandy Reay said her house was broken into between 9.15am and 1.45pm last Tuesday. Thieves made off with electronic equipment and some personal items, but the most upsetting loss was a hard drive full of photos and videos of Marly. Marly, 8, has a rare genetic condition called Prader-Willi Syndrome, characterised by low muscle tone, intellectual disability and an insatiable appetite. “We have filmed and photographed all of Marly’s milestones, and there are many nights where we sit and watch the videos together,” Ms Reay said. Ms Reay said the family started the day on a high, sending Marly off to her first school camp. “We were nervous as she has only been out of our care a handful of times, but so proud and excited for her,” she said. “We had planned a special date for our younger daughter Billie in the evening. “She is a loving sister and always puts Marly’s needs first, and we were looking forward to spoiling her and giving her our undivided attention for the evening – something that never happens.” The plans were dealt a cruel blow, however, when Ms Reay’s husband Yanto returned home to discover the house had been broken into. No bed of roses for publican By Goya Dmytryshchak Plans have been lodged for a four-storey apartment block at the rear of one of Williamstown’s oldest hotels, the Rose of Australia. Pantelli Investments has applied to Hobsons Bay council to build 22 dwellings with basement parking and alterations to the Ferguson Street hotel which last year celebrated its 150th anniversary. Publican Darren Green, who took over the lease in 2014, said the applicant was retaining the liquor licence but the current version of the

Rose would be gone. “The problem is, there’s not enough people here,” he said. “There’s no money left in running a small pub. The rent is too high, everything’s too high. “Williamstown’s losing everything … you could come down here on a Saturday night and shoot a gun and you’ll hit no one. “This main street will all be four storeys, eventually … it’s only a matter of time.” The Rose was established in 1867 by John Morgan who was a member of the borough council, according to the Pubs of Williamstown guide by late local historian Bruce Tait.

One of the most eccentric publicans of the hotel was New Zealander Denis Irwin, who took over in 1987 and is thought to have been the first to introduce topless barmaids to Williamstown. He had the hotel’s rose insignia tattooed on his rear, a decision that Mr Tait speculated he must have regretted: “It would always be a permanent reminder of his days at the ‘Broken Nose’, as he now called it.” ARG Planning, acting for the applicant, was contacted for comment. The application will be advertised in due course.

Dog raises fire alarm A barking dog and quick-thinking young girl have helped save a family of six from a ferocious house fire in Yarraville. A thick plume of smoke was sent billowing over Melbourne’s west on Saturday after fire broke out at the Williamstown Road house about 4.30pm. The occupants of the home had fled it before emergency services arrived. About 35 firefighters took 90 minutes to bring the fire under control. Their efforts help save at least three neighbouring properties that had been at high risk of also going up in flames. Neighbour Andrew Kinsella said he could see the flames coming through into his backyard and thought his home would be next. MFB spokesman Paul Watson said the weatherboard house where the fire had started was fully alight when firefighters arrived. “Responding MFB crews called for additional

response due to large amounts of smoke seen in the direction they were responding to,” he said. “We’ve got seven fire trucks, one aerial appliance and a rescue unit.” An advice message was issued for Kingsville, Seddon, Yarraville and West Footscray, warning of the thick toxic smoke. MFB Commander Craig Williams said the family first discovered the fire had started after hearing their pet dog barking. “A six-year-old girl went to check on the dog. She found the fire first, raised the alarm, then once the smoke came into the house the smoke alarms activated,” he told Channel Seven. Fire investigators combed through the wreckage of the home on Sunday. They believe the fire may have started with something coming into contact with a bar heater. From plastic to fantastic By Goya Dmytryshchak Recyled plastic fibres have been transformed into a section of the Skeleton Creek Trail at Seabrook. Hobsons Bay council is the first in Victoria to trial a product called Emesh produced by Fibercon, which upcycles plastic to make reinforced concrete. An 80-metre section of trail was made with concrete reinforced by 120 kilograms of recycled plastic fibres instead of steel reinforcement mesh. Mayor Angela Altair said the product cost the same as steel but delivered environmental benefits. “Installing the Emesh product on the path has saved more than 108 kilograms of waste from going to landfill and has avoided the use of 807 kilograms of steel,” she said. “The recycled plastic alternative has also reduced carbon emissions by 2500 kilograms as less energy is consumed during its production compared to the production of steel.” She said the product was ideal for salty coastal environments as it doesn’t corrode. Ward councillor Colleen Gates said it could be rolled out on more than 700 kilometres of footpath. “With the focus on the war on waste, it’s been a really good time to get projects like this off the ground and hopefully we can do a lot more of them,” she said. “If this section looks like it’s going to stand up to wear and tear, then we could be putting this out across the city and not just for shared trails. I’d like to see us doing it for footpaths.” Hume council recently used plastic bags, recycled printer cartridges and glass bottles for a stretch of Rayfield Avenue at Craigieburn in an Australian-first trial.

Budding greenfingers keen to build up gardening skills have been drafted into a response to light-fingered plant thieves. Footscray City College students have been working with Maribyrnong council gardeners on a program to help replace plants stolen from Footscray Park garden beds. The council has estimated that nearly a third of all plants go missing from the park’s garden beds very soon after they have been planted. Council gardeners have been helping students to propagate new plants, sharing tips on the best way to take a cutting, collect seeds and nurture plants.

VET horticulture students are raising the plants in the school’s horticulture centre, the students and council gardeners then take the plants to the park to replace the stolen specimens. Footscray City College teacher Jak Dunstan said the students will be involved in the program for the entire school year. “This is a great opportunity for us to offer VET horticulture students a very hands-on experience in cultivating a garden that will assist to expand their knowledge and potential pathways after school,” he said.

Tunnel detour is taking a toll By Benjamin Millar Road detours forced by West Gate Tunnel work have created a safety and traffic “nightmare”, inner-west residents say. Whitehall Street in Yarraville will be closed to northbound traffic between Leek Street and Somerville Road for the next 12 months as crews divert a section of the 100-year-old North Yarra Main Sewer to allow tunnelling on the tollway to begin next year. Western Distributor Authority chief executive Peter Sammut said relocating the

brick sewer was a “massive piece of work” that had to happen before tunnelling could begin. Northbound traffic has been detoured on to Hyde Street since last Monday, August 6, creating lengthy delays for motorists. Trucks have been seen flouting heavy vehicle bans by continuing to travel north on Hyde Street beyond the detour and also using the route overnight. Justine Battistella, who lives along the detour route, said the road closure and traffic increase had left her frightened and concerned. “That poor intersection of Hyde Street and

Somerville Road has turned into a nightmare,” she said. “I fear there’s going to be a massive accident and very soon.” The existing Hyde Street truck ban has been lifted between Somerville Road and Leek Street from 6am to 8pm to allow trucks to detour around the sewer relocation works. Northbound trucks are then required to turn back on to Whitehall Street. Overnight bans remain in place on Hyde Street from 8pm to 6am. The state government has responded to concerns by installing additional CCTV

cameras and infrared sensors to detect and photograph trucks ignoring the rules. VicRoads transport safety services manager Russell Greenland said his team would continue to monitor heavy vehicles in the area. Williamstown MP Wade Noonan said the government wanted to reduce the number of trucks using Hyde Street as much as possible and was taking trucks flouting bans seriously. “The state-of-the-art traffic monitoring technology should give local residents assurance that every effort is being made to manage traffic appropriately,” he said.

Drawing on strength Victoria University staff and students have been painting their way towards a resounding message of respect. Dozens of members of the VU community worked on a new campus mural that features images in support of greater gender equality. VU deputy vice chancellor Marcia Devlin said the mural project was just one of the ways VU has been working towards fighting sexism and inequality, one year on from the release of a damning national survey of university students on sexual harassment and sexual assault. Victoria University has been implementing all nine recommendations of the Australian Human Rights Commission’s Change the Course report. Professor Devlin said the mural was based on the theme of Nobel Peace Prize laureate Malala Yousafzai’s quote ‘I’m Stronger Than Fear’. She said the mural sends a message about women having a voice and a sense of safety.

“It’s been a real collaboration, it was very moving when it was unveiled.” Professor Devlin used the mural’s official launch to announce a new $140,000 state government grant awarded to HealthWest, one of the VU’s partner organisations in violence prevention work. The grant from the Free From Violence fund will be used to help train male students from diverse backgrounds to challenge sexism in the community. “We will be working with about 20 males from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds on awareness building around gender-based violence,” Professor Devlin said. Driving force for farmers By Goya Dmytryshchak A western suburbs trucking business is aiming to raise $10,000 for drought-stricken farmers. Henry Transport Group (HTG), based in Altona North and Truganina, is donating $10 from every tow job it completes in August to Buy a Bale. Buy a Bale, run by Rural Aid, is supplying emergency hay to New South Wales and Queensland families struggling to keep cattle, sheep and horses alive through one of the worst droughts in living memory.

The rate of suicide in rural areas is through the - Tyson Beckwith roof

’’

HTG operations manager Tyson Beckwith said the company wanted to help working class people who were struggling to keep animals and crops alive. “Most people I know have been touched by suicide – I had an uncle who committed suicide … the rate of suicide in rural areas is through the roof,” he said. “Most of the guys here are in their 30s and 40s – we kind of remember an Australia where farming was the backbone of the country and farmers were respected and admired, and it seems like they’re getting a little bit forgotten.” The family business last month completed more than 900 jobs and aims to reach 10,000 jobs for August. About 80 per cent of the company’s business is machinery towing for construction and development projects.

Mr Beckwith said a donation of $10,000 to Buy a Bale would be able to provide more than 460,000 litres of water to farmers. “Ten dollars doesn’t sound like much but we do a lot of turnover so it can become quite significant,” he said.

Pensioner’s four month battle By Alesha Capone Alex Allan has been waiting more than 130 days to receive the age pension. Mr Allan said he visited the Werribee Centrelink office to apply for the pension on March 14 this year – the day after retiring from 29 years of working for Hobsons Bay council. The 65-year-old said he had asked the Centrelink office if he could apply for the pension in January, but was told he needed to wait until after he retired. Mr Allan said despite filling in all his pension

application paperwork, he is yet to see a single payment. “It’s four months now – it’s ridiculous, I still haven’t got it [the pension] and it’s now August,” he said. Mr Allan is not the only one in his family to have had trouble with Centrelink – his wife, Karen, spent more than 200 days waiting for her application to receive a disability pension to be processed. Mr Allan said Karen only began to receive her payments last month, after he asked the office of Lalor MP Joanne Ryan to look into it.

‘‘

I have noticed an increase in horror stories - Joanne Ryan from residents

’’

Ms Ryan recently spoke about the issue of long waiting times for Centrelink payments in federal Parliament. Last month, she gave a speech about a man from the west who waited 161 days for his pension application to be processed. “As the local federal member, I have noticed

an increase in horror stories from residents informing me that their wait times to access Centrelink have blown out,” Ms Ryan told Star Weekly Weekly. “On paper, the median processing time for an age pension has increased from 36 days to 49 days this financial year. “In reality, pensioners are waiting multiple months on top of the median processing time.” A spokesperson from the Department of Human Services said “a range of factors” could cause delays including failing to submit all of the required supporting documentation.

Festival aids fire victims The biggest Greek Orthodox church in Melbourne’s west is holding a community festival as it continues fundraising efforts for people affected by the wildfires in their homeland. The Dormition of Our Lady at Altona North will open its doors for all people to rejoice in Greek culture. Parish priest Father George Frangos said there would be Greek food, music and dancing, with visits from the emergency services including the fire brigade and SES. “During the day, we probably get about 2000-3000 people coming through,” he said. People of all faiths can catch a glimpse inside the unique building, whose prototype was a church in Corinth, Greece. “The building itself is of interest, and what we’re doing is opening it up to the wider community to see what we’re doing, together,” Father George said.

He said the church was continuing to accept donations for the people devastated by last month’s wildfires, which have claimed 93 lives. “We’ve raised more than $8000 over the last couple of weeks in order to help feed people affected by the wildfires over in Athens,” Father George said. “Some of the people that were involved in the design of certain elements – especially the chandeliers – of our church, some of their family members were killed as part of that.” A liturgy will be held before the festival, which is on Sunday, August 19 from noon-5pm. At 3pm, there will be a guided tour inside the church at 272 Millers Road. Goya Dmytryshchak Parish priest Father George Frangos outside the Dormition of Our Lady. (Joe Mastroianni)

Movie magic in Footscray By Benjamin Millar A dusty African streetscape suddenly arose in the heart of Footscray last week as film crews shot scenes for the state’s largest ever Australian-Chinese co-production. The Whistleblower is a feature-length thriller following the story of a Chinese expat who uncovers a conspiracy at the Australian mining company where he works. It is being filmed at Docklands Studio as well as locations across the state, including Footscray, which was transformed last week into the southeast African country of Malawi. The film is being directed by Xue Xiaolu and produced by acclaimed producer Bill Kong of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and House of Flying Daggers fame. Mr Kong, the president of Edko Films Limited, said he was honoured to be working with Perfect Village, Screen Australia and the Victorian government to bring the film to reality. “Most of all, I am thrilled to be able to work with the most talented crews from Australia and I look forward to a successful movie.” The film stars Chinese actor Jiayin Lei, best known for his roles in Guns and Roses and Brotherhood of Blades II II. Lei plays Mark Ma, a Chinese expat working in Australia for a local mining company. A fatal accident leads Ma to discover that the new technology being developed by his company may have tremendous safety risks, spurring him to investigate a tangled web of conspiracies. The production involves more than 200 local cast and crew, making it the largest in Victoria since the Steven Spielberg-produced mini series The Pacific was filmed in 2010. Filming is expected to inject more than $40

million into the local economy. Screen Australia chief executive Graeme Mason said he was thrilled to have The Whistleblower being produced in Australia. “Official co-productions are a fantastic opportunity for creative partners to come

together and collaborate on story, share skill sets and benefit from the financial screen incentives offered by both countries,” he said. Creative Industries Minister Martin Foley said the film provides a welcome boost for local jobs and businesses.

Killers refused appeal hearing By Benjamin Millar Three men found guilty of murdering a man and dumping his severed body parts in the Maribyrnong River have failed in a bid to appeal their convictions and sentences. Con Spaliaras, Edward Lionel Hill and Matthew David Brennan were in 2016 convicted of murder over the 2015 slaying of Brennan’s housemate Brendan Bernard. All three entered not guilty pleas, despite admitting they chopped up Mr Bernard’s body and threw the pieces into the river.

The Supreme Court heard Mr Bernard, 32, was killed at a North Melbourne unit, when everyone present was drunk or affected by drugs. The jury heard Mr Bernard was confronted over an unpaid $60 drug debt. The three men were found to have bashed Mr Bernard before Spaliaras put him into a “sleeper hold” until he lost consciousness. Mr Bernard’s body was left in a bathtub for about a week before he was dismembered and dumped, the parts later surfacing and identified by a distinctive tattoo.

Spaliaras was sentenced to 24 years’ imprisonment, Brennan to 22 years and Hill to 20 years. Spaliaras this year sought leave to appeal on the grounds the verdict was “unreasonable or cannot be supported having regard to the evidence”. Brennan argued it had not been reasonable for the jury “to be satisfied that the accused was part of an agreement, arrangement or understanding” to kill or seriously injure Bernard. Hill sought leave to appeal his conviction

on the grounds that there was insufficient evidence to determine his role or to show he had any intention to commit murder. All three men claimed a “substantial miscarriage of justice” occurred because of “prejudicial and irrelevant comments” about other murder cases and the drug ‘ice’ made by the chief crown prosecutor during the prosecution opening address. But in a joint ruling handed down earlier this month, Supreme Court Justices Chris Maxwell, Phillip Priest and Peter Kidd refused leave to appeal the convictions or sentences.

A history of healing The history of Altona’s beloved former hospital has been captured in a book to be launched this month. Altona Hospital operated in Pier Street in 1932-1938, before moving to the corner of Queen and Sargood streets where it ran until 1996. Titled A Bush Hospital by the Bay - Altona Hospital 1932 to 1996, the book has been meticulously researched by Altona Laverton Historical Society members Ann Cassar, Jim Hevey, Maureen Lane and Graeme Reilly. Ms Lane said the hospital grew out of the community need. “Dr Louis Joel and Matron Ivy Weber started the hospital in Pier Street first, in a double-fronted wooden house that they rented, but the demand was so great that they had this idea that they would apply for some money and build a hospital by the people and for the people, so they did it on a subscription basis.

“It ran like a bush hospital – the nurses and the matrons ran the hospital and the doctors visited.” Ms Lane said there were many attempts to close the hospital but each time the community vigorously resisted. “The government of the time wanted it gone so they kept raising the bar all the time, trying to make the hospital close on its own,” she said. “Every time, the board rose to the occasion.” “Eventually it was just too much and they … had to close its doors. “Then the government tried to take the land that the hospital was on … and so the community fought again to keep that property … and that’s why it’s the Louis Joel centre.” A Bush Hospital by the Bay - Altona Hospital 1932 to 1996 will be launched at the Louis Joel centre, on August 21 at 7.30pm. Hear here: how to make someone’s life happier in ten easy steps Specsavers Altona North recently launched a new audiology service to its customers, revolutionising hearing care for Victorians by offering hearing aids and services at clear, low prices. One in six Australians experience hearing loss, yet only one in three does anything about it. On top of this, new Specsavers research has shown that over half of Australians (57%), 18 years and over, have experienced moments where they felt concerned about their hearing.

If you know someone who is hard of hearing, here are ten things you can do to make their life easier: 1.

EPA program to stay, for now By Tate Papworth A pilot program introduced last year as part of the EPA reforms to provide more effective regulation of environmental issues will continue. The $4.8 million Officers for the Protection of the Local Environment (OPLE) program was launched last year for an initial 15-month period. Under the program, EPA officers were assigned to 13 councils around the state. Brimbank council and Hobsons Bay currently

share an OPLE officer who responds to smaller-scale and lower-risk waste and pollution complaints, including illegal dumping, litter, noise, dust and odours from smaller business and industry. Brimbank mayor Margaret Giudice welcomed the news that the program will be extended to July 2019. “Brimbank has been advocating for the program to continue, as it’s helping to speed up the resolution of local environmental problems,” Cr Giudice said. “Earlier this year council wrote to the

Minister for Energy, Environment and Climate Change Lily D’Ambrosio to advocate for continued funding of the OPLE program, including funding for the officer at Brimbank City Council. “In the months since the OPLE program has been active for Brimbank, the OPLE officer has been making headway in investigating smaller-scale environmental issues and has issued multiple clean-up notices to businesses. “Brimbank council views the OPLE program as an important step in building stronger relationships between the EPA and councils,

and in speeding up the resolution of local environmental problems.” Cr Giudice said the council hoped the initiative would be made permanent. “Brimbank has invested significant time and resources to ensure the OPLE officer role is effective and achieves good environmental outcomes for our community. “Brimbank would certainly welcome a state government decision to permanently introduce the program,” she said. Members of the public can report pollution to the EPA’s 24-hour hotline 1300 372 842.

Every step counts A Seaholme couple has signed up for a fundraiser to help fight kidney disease. George and Maroula Said have registered separately for the Big Red Kidney Walk in a friendly competition, but they know first-hand how serious the disease is. Mr Said, who will be on his electric scooter with his wife by his side for the event, undergoes dialysis every other day. “I started having kidney failure for a long time,” the 85-year-old said. “Every so often, I would have blood tests and they would tell me you’re 60 per cent [functioning], you’re 50 per cent, until I got down to 20 per cent and they said, you shouldn’t go any further, you should have dialysis. “Every second day I devote six and a half hours to stay alive. If I don’t do that, they tell me I would last seven days. “But it’s wonderful to be at home rather than the hospital.”

The Big Red Kidney Walk is a 3.8-kilometre walk around the Royal Botanic Gardens to help Kidney Health Australia deliver life-saving support services to people with kidney disease. The disease kills more Australians than breast cancer, prostate cancer and road trauma combined. Mrs Said, 84, is walking to support her husband and all the children and adults living with kidney disease. “I said to George, I’ve got to start walking because I’ve got to walk for two hours,” she said. “So, I’m in training.” The walk is on September 9 from 10am-noon. MY PLACE Fresh from launching a new book celebrating Australian craft brewers and beer, Luke Robertson finds plenty to love about life in Footscray. He speaks with Benjamin Millar. What is your connection with the inner-west? I first moved to Yarraville from New Zealand in 2005 and fell in love with the west. I found a place in Kensington for a few years, then moved to Footscray about four or five years ago. What brought me here? The people! What do you love most about the area? There is a real sense of community in Footscray. People are proud that they live and work in the area. Even with such rapid change happening around the suburb in the last couple of years, the community is so strong and so proud. What are your favourite local places? I miss Little Saigon! For lunch I love Tan Thanh Loi for pork chop; Nhu Ngoc for tiger roll banh mi; or Roti Road for Nasi Lemak. Hey Zeus and Rudimentary for coffee; and Hop Nation, Littlefoot, the Reverence, Bar Josephine and Mr West for drinks. You’ll probably find me sneaking into 8 Bit for a burger every now and then too. Plus so many others. What can you tell us about your new book, Keg Bottle Beer? It’s a book celebrating beer in Australia, and for me that means celebrating small business. It’s designed to highlight all the wonderful beers you can buy around the country and the breweries who are making them. Every chapter is about a different occasion, be it a dinner party, a barbecue, or enjoying by the fire; and the 15 Australian beers I think suit those times best. There’s also advice on food matching, beer ageing, glassware and more.

How did you end up with a career writing about beer? I fell into it while doing part-time study. I had to start a blog and I figured beer was a fun subject. That was in 2010 and beer was about to take off, so I ended up in the right place at the right time. I had studied journalism back in New Zealand, so when the blog got more traction I began looking for more paid writing work, and as a result beer is pretty much full time. The best thing? It’s a lovely industry full of lovely people, and I don’t have to sit in an office wearing a suit everyday. What is your all-time favourite beer? Stille Nacht Reserva (2010) from De Dolle in Belgium. Not exactly a beer you’ll find on shelves, but it’s such a memorable beer and I was lucky enough to visit the brewery a few years back to meet the husband and wife team behind it. A lovely little brewery in a small town in Belgium, making some of the best beers. Locally, it’s hard to beat Hop Nation’s The Chop or Two Birds’ Trail Blazer Lager. What’s something people might be surprised to learn about you? While I do a beer podcast (Ale of a Time), I also do one about another topic I absolutely love: conspiracy theories. It’s called the Hypothetical Institute and it’s a light-hearted look at some out-there theories and the people behind them. It’s also recorded here in Footscray. Keg Bottle Beer is out now via Hardie Grant Books.

FB: How would you rate your cooking skills? EM: I have the perfect marriage. I have a wife who loves to cook and is very good at it and I like to eat. This is embarrassing, but I have rarely cooked anything in my life. I walk through the kitchen, I sniff, I poke and prod and I taste – and then I get told to get out. There is a latent cook in me somewhere. FB: What don’t or won’t you eat? EM: I can’t eat the white of an egg, but I can eat scrambled eggs. I cut a poached egg like a surgeon. (Also) cooked cabbage, which – coming from an Irish background – was a problem because I could not physically eat it. FB: If you could only have one more meal, what would it be? EM: A plate with foie gras. Risotto with white truffles. A beef dish – medium rare with fresh greens and potatoes … boiled, Heston’s three-times cooked, scalloped … in fact, every potato type known to mankind. Tiramasu for dessert. FB: What is your favourite food? EM: Hard question because we are so spoiled with choice. If I had to choose, it would be Italian/French with Asian right in there as well. FB: What is your favourite drink? EM: The change in my palate in recent times has seen me pairing wines with different meals. Matching different food types with wines is wonderful fun. FB: Which five people would you most like to invite to dinner? EM: Jesus, John F Kennedy, Jock McHale (first coach of Collingwood), William Shakespeare and Thomas Jefferson. Recently, I’ve developed a bit of a fascination with pies. Not the Collingwood variety – thanks, Eddie! Not the boxed-up supermarket variety you fish out of the freezer for a quick feed. No, the pies that inspire me are the ones people happen to be churning out in their pie-makers at home. Lately, social media has been serving me up pictures of everything from pie-making appliances to piping hot apple turnovers and hand-made cherry pies. There are entire Facebook threads devoted to popular pie fillings. I’m not sure there’s room in our kitchen for a portable pie-maker (obviously it would have to find room alongside The Starship Enterprise, as we call Kev’s portable pizza oven). But I think I want one. My mum used to have one, and I seem to remember leftover spag bol made an excellent pie filling! For smaller home-made pies that make delicious snacks on the run, the Sunbeam 4210 pie-maker is getting some great reviews. It makes two deep dish pies from one sheet of ready rolled pastry and is a great way to serve up leftover casseroles (think butter chicken or beef strog) or vegies. The non-stick surface gives a crispy, professionally sealed finish and it comes with its own pastry cutter. It’ll set you back about $50. It’s a townhouse that defies any implied size limitations. One of two built on a wide block, its spaces are larger and wider than expected. And with Cherry Lake Reserve and the beach close at hand, adventures with little people at the weekends beckon. Within this high-spec property are, downstairs, open-plan living and a guest room with en suite and walk-in robe. Upstairs are the main bedroom with walk-in robe and en suite and two further bedrooms, both with built-in robes. Wide timber floorboards are among many finishes that offer an on-trend, next-level feel. Floating timber vanities with stone benches in the bathrooms, a gorgeous kitchen, built-in storage and, beyond a back deck, a great backyard with your own patch of turf, help create a feeling of home. This brand-new family residence is turn-key ready.

Land ahoy! This large plot of land located opposite Laverton train station is waiting a smart developer to grab it and transform it into a fantastic new development (STCA). With about 631 square metres to play with and just 150 metres from the local shopping precinct, this property presents as a top opportunity. The current property has seen better days, but has three bedrooms, separate kitchen and a laundry, as well as a central lounge room. There is a single lock-up garage on title.

Extensive contemporary built-in cabinetry keeps the lines clean and offers a place for everything. Four large bedrooms are carpeted with built-in robes, the main bedroom has a large en suite and walk-in robe. The kitchen is modernist with white 2pac soft-closing cabinetry and high-end appliances. MAIDSTONE 29 Yardley Street, 3012 Sweeney Inner West: 9689 8388

Price: $695,000

In Maidstone, south of Ballarat Road, older housing styles reflecting the suburb’s working class roots can barely be seen today. Townhouses dot the streets and the neighbourhood’s redux is no more evident than at this address, where the streets which face Dobson’s Reserve are awash with new builds, including this brand new townhouse. One of six, this two-bedroom property has all the finishes expected of an ultra-modern townhouse. Enter to the hall with hardwood flooring,

set against white walls. There are two carpeted bedrooms on entry. They have individual split-systems. The main bedroom has a contemporary en suite with stone benches, a floating vanity and a frameless shower. The second bedroom has mirrored sliding-style built-in robes. The windows in both bedrooms incorporate frameless corner-set window features, opening up clear views of the park opposite. There is a small laundry cleverly concealed under the staircase, saving on

space. At the rear of the residence, there is a study space, the main bathroom with tiling and a separate bath and shower. The courtyard has gate access to one off-street park, which is on title. Up the staircase, open-plan living includes hardwood flooring, ducted heating, a stylish corner-set kitchen with a smoke-mirrored splashback set against hardwood cabinetry, stainless-steel appliances, stone benches and a good-sized meals area. The lounge area is of a great size. Here, concertina aluminium doors open to the

right, offering a large area for entertaining on the balcony during warmer months. At about nine square metres, it is generously proportioned to create a maximum of living space. With a powder room for guests, here is a good entertainer’s package for a young professional couple looking for their first home, one close to the CBD. With its own street frontage and at an affordable price point, this is a great property to add to your inspection list. Samantha Freestone 21 MARIBYRNONG & HOBSONS BAY STAR WEEKLY \ AUGUST 15, 2018

41 MARIBYRNONG & HOBSONS BAY STAR WEEKLY \ AUGUST 15, 2018

SPORT Morris honoured for milestone match Revered veteran defender Dale Morris was the toast of the west after notching his 250th AFL game on Sunday. Morris produced a typically selfless performance in the Bulldogs’ come-from-behind seven-point win over North Melbourne at Etihad Stadium. The Bulldogs returned from 28 points down at half-time to overrun the Kangaroos, largely on the back of a stunning eight-goal-to-two third term. The victory was a fitting salute to Morris on his milestone day. Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge enjoyed the build-up to Morris’s big day, in particular the positive media coverage the 35-year-old premiership player received. “There was obviously a lot of commentary and some great articles and interviews surrounding Moz’s 250th game,” he said. “It was magnificent just to sit there and read some of them and see some of the words that were spoken about him.”

Morris’s significant impact on the game did not show up on the stats sheet. He finished with three kicks, five handballs and four tackles, but it was the way he impacted in pack situations that pleased Beveridge. “It was a pretty good eight-possession game today from Moz, when you consider how hard he hit contests, how many spoils he made, how many North Melbourne transitions that he foiled,” Beveridge said. “It epitomise that team-based spirit and that selflessness that he brings to his team.” Morris took the long road to the AFL, starting out with the Doutta Stars in the Essendon District Football League and getting his grounding in elite football with Werribee in the Victorian Football League.

IN THE DOGHOUSE ■ Could you imagine a highly-prized AFL country or interstate teenage recruit landing at his new place of employment, being introduced to his host family and then spending the next two years living in a caravan in the family’s front yard, and loving it? Way back in 1974 that is exactly what Warburton recruit Terry Wheeler did. ‘Wheels’ recounted his early days at Whitten Oval to the crowd at the East West Young Guns and Legends dinner last week. Conversely, 2018 recruits Ed Richard and Aaron Naughton spent the first month of their AFL life sharing digs with Marcus Bontempeli and Mitch Wallis respectively. Wheeler runs the Williamstown past players group and is a regular attendee at Bulldogs past player event. He was joined on the panel by Nigel Kellett and Adrian Campbell - two players he coached.

■ Kellett played 101 games in the red, white and blue and his son Josh is on the club’s father-son radar. Young Kellett was very impressed to receive a jumper with the number 4 on the back, but not because his father played nearly all his games in that number, it was more to do with the current incumbent Marcus Bontempeli. Campbell was highly rated by the club but supporters never got to see his full power because of injuries. ■ Simon Madden was a great player and is a very entertaining storyteller and character. You can see him in action this week at the Hoppers Club. The legendary Essendon ruckman and premiership player has joined with former teammate Mark Eustice to present a night of inspirational, enlightening and entertaining stories about their lives, on and off the field. Eustice, universally known as ‘Wally,’ has come back from mental illness, drug and alcohol addiction, and has a remarkable story to tell. Bookings through reception@hoppersclub.com. au. Close call for Woodsmen By Lance Jenkinson Spotswood was given an intense pre-finals workout by St Albans in the Western Region Football League division 1. The Woodsmen managed to get up by four points in a game that could have gone either way at Donald McLean Reserve on Saturday. Woodsmen coach Anthony Eames was full of praise for both teams who did not give an inch in a game that was played in extremely varying weather conditions from sun to hail. “It was a hard-fought game,” Eames said. “They had a fair old crack at us today. “It would’ve been a good one to view for supporters either way.” Spotswood was forced to dig deep in the second half to record its third straight win. The Woodsmen stared a two-goal deficit in the face during the third quarter, but they found a way to get their nose in front by three-quarter time.

A fourth quarter goal for Jordan Boyd was all the Woodsmen needed to hold on for victory. “We were under the pump a few times,” Eames said. “The second half, in particular, the conditions closed in a bit and it made it a hard old slog. “We showed a bit of character, there’s no doubt about that.” Harley Walshe continued his good form for Spotswood at centre half-back. Walshe was one of the most effective players aerially on the ground. “He’s reading the game well and competing particularly well in the air,” Eames said. “His use of the footy is pretty solid too. “He played on a good player in [St Albans forward Lachlan] Baddeley, so that was a good test for Harley.” Woodsmen big man Murray Boyd had an enthralling battle with David Kovacevic. The honours were even in a key battle, though Boyd bobbed up for two important goals.

42 MARIBYRNONG & HOBSONS BAY STAR WEEKLY \ AUGUST 15, 2018

David Iaccarino was influential in the midfield for Spotswood, while Ciaran Lynch and Josh Drage were the other standouts. It was a big day for Spotswood with 1958, 1968 and 2008 premiership reunions capping off a memorable game. “It was a great vibe in the clubrooms,” Eames said. “They’ve got a few [premierships] at Spotswood, so most home games are some sort of reunion.” The finals-bound Spotswood will face Caroline Springs in a danger game at Town Centre Oval on Saturday. Meanwhile, second-placed Altona moved closer to a double chance with a 13-point win over Werribee Districts at J.K. Grant Reserve. The Vikings led by a massive 37 points at three-quarter time on the back of goal hauls from Patrick Rose (four) and Travis Lunardi (three), but Werribee Districts made it a nervous last quarter by banging on five goals to one.

■ I could easily write a dozen columns about Dale Morris and John Lamont, two exceptional football men. Morris became the oldest player to reach 250 games last week, while Lamont announced he would not be continuing as senior coach of the Werribee Football Club past this season. Morris played 36 games at Werribee before the Bulldogs drafted him. Lamont came from a development role with North Melbourne to Avalon Airport Oval where he has been senior coach for five years.

Quiet achiever makes the cut Carly James is not one to put forecasts on her hockey career. The modest potential future Hockeyroo prefers to live in the now and make the most of every moment she gets on the hockey field. You have to go to outside sources to get a picture of James’ potential in the game. The ultimate endorsement of her talent comes in the form of selection in the Australian national junior women’s squad, which identifies athletes capable of progressing to the senior program as future Hockeyroos. The appraisal does not get much bigger for a 20-year-old Footscray Hockey Club defender. “It was pretty humbling to be put into this squad,” James said. “I never expected to be named or identified for it. “It’s going to really help develop me as a player. “I’ll get to learn what the best players at this age in the country do, how they train, how they prepare and even just learning different skills off other defenders and add it into my game.” While Hockey Australia plans the make up of its squads years before the players make the grade, James is more concerned about the here

and now and doing the one-per centers to keep on improving. The full-back simply wants to better herself every day, whether it be on the defensive line for Footscray in the premier league, the Victorian Vipers in the Australian Hockey League or the Australian under-age team, or even in her physical education and sports science studies at Victoria University. “I’ve always been someone who has always gone week by week,” James said. “My thing has always been to just enjoy my hockey. “Since being selected in the futures, I might have to start thinking longer term!” The other glowing endorsement of James’ game was her selection to the Victorian Vipers squad last week. It will be James’ first open age state representative gig, though donning the Big V is certainly not foreign territory for her, having been involved in most under age Victorian teams growing up. “It was nice to be named in the Vipers squad of 22,” she said. “I’ll get to work with some of the girls who have been in the Hockeyroos squad.”

James, who lives in Point Cook, has been influential at state and local level this season. She has marshalled a young Footscray defence with aplomb in the premier league and is one of the keys to their premiership chances. Her performances for the bronze medal-winning Victorian under-21s at the nationals put her on the radar of the Australian junior national women’s squad. “It’s been a pretty big year for me this year,” James said. James is the August nominee for the Don Deeble Rising Star award. The award, hosted by the Sunshine Western Region Sports Club and Star Weekly, recognises young athletes from the western suburbs who have achieved outstanding results at state and/ or national levels. James will receive $1000, donated by the Yarraville Club Cricket Club, and other prizes to assist her in achieving her sporting goals. Lance Jenkinson

Calling all AFL recruiters By Lance Jenkinson Williamstown coach Andrew Collins is staggered that his phone is not ringing off the hook with AFL recruiters wanting to make inquiries about the impressive young talent on his club’s list. In his five years as senior coach of the Seagulls, there are certain AFL clubs that have not even contacted Collins with a question once, which disappoints him mainly because of the rich array of talent he feels privileged to work with on a daily basis that could miss out on their AFL dream. “It’s embarrassing that some club’s recruiters won’t even give VFL the time of day,” Collins said. “There’s some recruiters and some clubs that have never spoken to anyone at Williamstown in my five years there. “If I was the CEO of an AFL footy club and I found out that my recruiters weren’t talking to VFL clubs, I’d be pretty annoyed.” Williamstown’s runaway 44-point win over Richmond in the Victorian Football League at the Swinburne Centre on Saturday should serve as an incentive for recruiters of all 18 AFL clubs to touch base with Collins to dissect which players could potentially step up to the big league. Some AFL club recruiters will no doubt be on the line to Collins, but some will not be bothered and their club might miss out on a future star. Collins is more than willing to take calls from any recruiter interested in one of the Seagulls players because he knows how much ready-made talent there is on the list. The next Kane Lambert, who went on to play in a premiership with Richmond after rejuvenating his career with Williamstown, could be in the Seagulls nest this year. “I have no vested interest in any one club, I just want to see what’s best for these boys to get an opportunity to play AFL,” Collins said. “There’s some terrific clubs in the AFL that do their due diligence and then there’s other clubs I’ve never heard from and neither has the footy club.” Saturday’s game was an arm wrestle for three and a half quarters, but the Seagulls tore it apart in 15 minutes of fury in the last quarter. Leading by 10 points, the Seagulls banged on six unanswered goals to romp to victory. “No team really got the ascendancy over the other until the last probably 15 minutes of play,” Collins said. Williamstown captain Adam Marcon had a day out against his former club. Marcon capped a best-on-ground display in the midfield with three goals.

Star onballer Michael Gibbons showed why he is in the mix for a second Liston Trophy. Lachie Schultz jagged four goals, while Nick Rodda and Ben Cavarra added three each. In general, it was an even team performance from Williamstown, who made it two consecutive wins. “We were really fortunate that we had good players right over the field,” Collins said. Williamstown will be out to defend fourth spot when it hosts traditional rivals Port

Melbourne at the Williamstown Football Ground on Sunday. Meanwhile, Footscray is only just clinging to a spot in the VFL top eight after a 20-point loss to North Melbourne at Avalon Airport Oval. Mitch Honeychurch and Angus Monfries kicked three goals for the Bulldogs, while Tim English (49 hit outs) and Tom Campbell (43 hit outs) dominated aerially. The Bulldogs travel to Windy Hill to play Essendon on Saturday.

Taipan Barnett is one of Tsar Fight Club’s most promising young students. The martial arts academy, based in North Sunshine, is like a second home for Barnett. For him and his fellow students, it’s effectively an extended family. Barnett was recognised by the Tsar Fight Club during last month’s NAIDOC Week, which celebrates the history, culture and achievements of Indigenous and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The 16-year-old from Altona is exceptionally talented at karate, a sport in which he is a two-time Victorian full contact champion. He is also proudly of Indigenous and Torres Straight Islander heritage. Barnett’s indigenous background comes from his father and grandmother’s bloodlines, which stem back to the Wuthathi in far North Queensland and Torres Strait Island. Barnett is adept in activities passed on by his father and grandmother such as artwork and playing the didgeridoo. The martial art that Barnett practises is a traditional Okinawan karate called Shorin Ryu Sui-Di. Barnett has an impressive undefeated record in his past three years of full-contact karate competition. Tsar Fight Club sensei Dusko Trifunovic described Barnett as an “amazing young athlete”. Barnett’s next goal is to become an Australian full-contact champion. He has dreams of travelling to Japan to train with Grandmaster Hanshi Koichi Nakasone in Okinawa.

Magic reward for Altona coach By Lance Jenkinson Goran Lozanovski had planned and envisaged the day he would lead his beloved Altona Magic back to the top flight. The coach was not so sure that day would come as soon as last Saturday. Only 12 months after guiding the Magic out of the state leagues and into NPL 2, the 44-year-old has achieved consecutive promotions to pave the way for the club’s return back to the Victorian soccer’s top flight for the first time since 2010. Lozanovski, who grew up supporting the Magic, can look forward to taking his team on the road to places such as Melbourne Knights, Bentleigh Greens, Heidelberg United and even one of his former clubs South Melbourne in 2019. “We probably achieved it a little bit quicker than we thought we’d achieve it,” Lozanovski said. “It’s been an amazing ride. I’m over the moon at the moment, it almost feels surreal. “I’m just letting it sink in.” Altona Magic is one of the proudest and

most respected soccer clubs in the state. In 1967, a group of Macedonian immigrants with a passion for soccer got together to discuss the possibility of starting a club. A year later, the club was born, and in 2018, the Magic is celebrating its 50th anniversary season in style. “Next weekend we’re having our 50th birthday party,” Lozanovski said. “We couldn’t have planned it like this, that we’ve already completed our assignment. “We’ll get to celebrate not just the club’s birthday party, but promotion and getting back into the top flight.” Taking Altona Magic back to the top means a lot to Lozanovski. His passion for the Magic was passed down by his dad Bill, who was a foundation member of the club. Before Lozanovski took over as coach, the Magic had some rough times and made the tough decision not to join the NPL for its inaugural season. “I grew up watching Altona Magic in the top flight for decades,” Lozanovski said. “For them to be missing as a club in the top flight for the last six of seven years has been

disheartening. That was part of my challenge to build a team and get ourselves promoted.” Altona Magic secured the title with a 2-0 win over Brunswick City at Dunstan Reserve on Saturday. Mid-season signings Daniel Kuczynski and Robert Stambolziev scored the goals to seal the win. The full-time whistle did not signify the title however. The Magic had a little wait until they could pop the champagne. “We had to wait until the other game between North Geelong and Moreland Zebras finished because the promotion was not official yet,” Lozanovski said. “Everyone was watching their phones and hoping full-time in that game would hurry up. “Once it happened, it was an amazing feeling. “Players went crazy, the supporters went nuts and we celebrated with some champagne and sang the song with our supporters and went to the changerooms and sang it again. “It was just a sigh of relief with all the hard work the players and the club has done in the last two or three years to get itself back to where it is.”

Spotswood notched up its fifth straight win in the Western Region Football League senior women’s competition. The Woodswomen made light work of North Sunshine in a 102-point win at Donald McLean Reserve on Sunday. Lauren Dundon was the star of the show for the Woodswomen with seven goals. Dundon brought up her 50th goal of the season in the process. The Woodswomen will have a tough pre-finals test against Caroline Springs at Town Centre Oval on Saturday.

Joe Tanti has stepped down as president of Altona City following Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Yarraville Glory in the Football Federation Victoria men’s state league 1. Tanti informed club members before the game it would be his last night in charge as president, leaving after four years in the position. “Over the past four years, the club has gone from strength to strength and it has been an absolute pleasure to call myself the leader of such a fantastic club,” he said on the club’s Facebook page. “Together we have come and formed a foundation that can now see the club be financially stable as well as successful for many years to come.” Altona City will 100 per cent remain in state league 1 next season, while Yarraville is just one point away from safety.

Bulldogs bring trophy home Point Cook executed close to a perfect grand final performance in a 47-13 win over Braybrook in the inaugural WRFL Netball season. The Bulldogs hardly had a weak link as they dismantled the Bombers in a one-sided season decider at the VU Community Sports Stadium on Friday night to secure the premiership. Elated Bulldogs netball co-ordinator and team manager Sam Pruscino said her charges had enjoyed “a pearler” of a game. “We had everything working at both ends and our mid-court has been a strength all year,” she said. Everything went so smoothly for Point Cook that coach Nicole Case and her assistant, Karlie Simons, did not call for reinforcement off the bench. The Bulldogs had 10 players named, but only seven saw any action. Pruscino was pleased with the reaction of the unused players. “They were all players that helped get the

girls to the grand final,” Pruscino said. “The three that didn’t get court time took it really well and were really supportive. They cheered, they supported.” Best-on-court honours went to Point Cook goal shooter Jenna Goricanec. Goricanec was the leading goal shooter in the grand final – and the most potent in the competition all season. “She’s really tall, quite agile and pops them in from anywhere,” Pruscino said. Goricanec has nice synergy with her goal attack, Holly Ellul. Ellul is constantly moving in the front third and putting Goricanec in good positions to score. “She feeds the ball in, does a lot of hard work on the outside of the circle to get it to Jenna for a good shot,” Pruscino said. The mid-court players were inspired by centre Jacqui McClurg, who wore the brunt of Braybrook’s physicality and was not fazed.

44 MARIBYRNONG & HOBSONS BAY STAR WEEKLY \ AUGUST 15, 2018

Lacrosse “She was against one of Braybrook’s more physical players,” Pruscino said. “She held her own against her and was a good option throughout the mid-court.” Also busy in the Point Cook mid-court were wing attack Bec Gass and wing defence Caitlin Brennan. The Bulldogs were led defensively by goal keeper Jo Crozier and goal defence Jane Goodier. Point Cook celebrated its premiership long and hard on Friday night. “It was a well-deserved celebration because it was a good season and the girls trained really hard and brought it home in the end,” Pruscino said. Pruscino praised the WRFL for its running of the inaugural netball competition and said she expected it to grow. Lance Jenkinson

‘The Fearon’ will be the place to be for western suburbs lacrosse fans this Saturday when Williamstown hosts Footscray in a top-of-the-table Lacrosse Victoria men’s state league clash at Fearon Reserve. The two sides could be on a collision course in the finals, so they will be eager to gain a psychological edge with a win in the penultimate round of the season. Both sides will take winning form into the match after Williamstown pipped Eltham 8-7 and Footscray beat Malvern 14-10 last Saturday. The game will begin at 2.45pm.
