B-doubles blunder By Benjamin Millar A blunder by VicRoads has been blamed for a surge in heavy trucks rat-running along a busy Yarraville road. Drivers of B-double trucks who want to travel on Somerville Road in Yarraville are required to obtain a permit. But an error on the B-double interactive map on the VicRoads website led to a free-for-all by incorrectly identifying the route as suitable for the trucks – measuring up to 26 metres long – to travel without permits. VicRoads heavy vehicle services director Eric Henderson said the error, in place for months, was identified late in June and fixed at the start of July. “We recently identified an error on our website where Somerville Road was listed as an approved B-double truck route, when it is not,” he said. “We’re working with industry to ensure they comply with curfew and permit requirements to travel on Somerville Road.” Mr Henderson said VicRoads’ Transport Safety Services team had increased patrols to make sure drivers were aware of the rules. The error coincided with Maribyrnong council blaming its paperwork load for the decision to offer blanket approval for B-double trucks to use Somerville Road, rather than the traditional practice of assessing each request for a National Heavy Vehicle Regulator permit on a case-by-case basis. Maribyrnong infrastructure Steve Hamilton said the council no longer provided pre-approvals for B-doubles travelling along the section of Somerville Road under council’s jurisdiction, between Geelong Road and Whitehall Street in Yarraville. “Each application to use Somerville Road is now assessed on its merits, council no longer issues 12-month pre-approvals for B-doubles,” he said. “VicRoads was advised of this and have revised relevant maps accordingly.” Maribyrnong Truck Action Group president Sam McArthur said the mix-up took months to untangle and only came to light due to pressure by residents and MTAG. Ms McArthur said the situation revealed a disturbing lack of concern and co-ordination by decision-makers in VicRoads and the council. “It’s such a sensitive issue in the City of Maribyrnong, it beggars belief that these decisions are being made without checking with people,” she said. “It’s a flabbergasting lack of thought that boils down to people making decisions based on traffic management and administration and not taking into account the effect on people”.
Bewitched by short films

Filmmakers are being encouraged to embrace their inner ghouls. This year’s Sunshine Short Film Festival, with a theme of “CarnEvil”, will run on Halloween (October 31) and entrants are being urged to turn to the strange and unusual as the focus of their five-minute films. For festival organiser Steve Pereira, the change of pace from last year’s “Beautiful Sunshine” theme is a reflection of how the festival has grown. “We first started this festival as a way of celebrating local culture … but as we’ve grown we’ve got more recognition and we can look a bit more broadly,” he said. “Horror has always been one of the most popular themes in past years, but it’s also about the carnival, the circus and the oddities of human existence … we want to say, let’s bring them out and enjoy the fact that we’ve got so many different, odd, and eccentric people.” As with previous years, there will be three age group categories – primary school, secondary school and open. The winner of each category will take home $1000, while the judges’ award for the best film overall will win $3000. “Entries can be anything from 30 seconds to five minutes, so it’s very achievable and we have a wide variety of films each year,” Pereira said. “What this festival also does is feature people from a wide variety of ethnicities, who don’t see themselves on the big screen or they are in very prescribed roles. “We get to be our heroes here, and tell our stories the way we want to tell them.” Details: sunshinefilmfestival.com.au Ewen McRae

A.H. Ford Reserve Following engagement with the local community in March, Council has developed a concept plan for A.H. Ford Reserve. Council’s plan addresses the features the community values in the park, such as the playground being in a similar location, retaining the cricket oval and goal posts, the development of an open picnic shelter seating area, the inclusion of a circuit path and access through to Belmar Avenue. In addition, Council has identified approximate locations for the development of a community garden. Council is holding a second community drop-in session at the reserve on Saturday 18 August from 10am to 12pm to talk through the concept plan and the proposed community garden. Come along and discuss your ideas and questions about the concept plan. Enjoy a coffee on us (BYO cup), meet your neighbours, and offer your suggestions. A Fairer Hobsons Bay for all Council is integrating five of its existing social policies to develop one policy that will support a range of population groups in having a stronger voice, making ‘A fairer Hobsons Bay for all’. In developing this overarching policy Council wants to hear the community’s ideas about breaking down barriers due to age, ability, cultural background, ethnicity, First Peoples status, gender or sexuality. The new policy will identify the common barriers experienced by many population groups, the group’s specific needs, and explore how we can create a community that is supportive and inclusive of all. Newport RSL shuts its doors By Goya Dmytryshchak The Newport RSL Club ceased trading at the weekend as Victorian RSL examines the sub branch’s financial position. Victorian RSL chief executive Mike Annett said the sub branch was in financial difficulty, the full extent of which was not yet known. “Newport RSL is a licensed but unincorporated sub branch so any financial difficulty they find themselves in – and they are in financial difficulty – ultimately need to
be recovered,” he said. “We have an interest in ensuring that the sub branch … can meet its obligations in terms of its debts, its creditors, and ensure that any staff entitlements are met.” Mr Annett said the state branch had assisted the Newport sub branch after the lease on its Market Street premises became overdue. He said the Victorian RSL commercial operations team met with the executive of the Newport sub branch committee on Friday. “We were pleased that the sub branch
committee recognised that the only prudent and sensible thing to do was to immediately cease commercial operations until such time as their true financial position could be ascertained,” Mr Annett said. “We did not want them to be continuing to trade commercially when there was any doubt about what that position was and we also didn’t want to put in jeopardy any staff entitlements that may or may not have been fully met to date. “Our commercial ops team, once they’ve
had an opportunity to establish that financial position, will provide a further report to our state executive, which is essentially the governing body for the RSL in Victoria.” The Newport sub branch has not been dissolved, unlike Williamstown RSL whose club closed on January 3, 2017. “We just hope we can, firstly, get an accurate picture of the [Newport] sub branch’s situation as quickly as we can, and then the state executive can make some longer-term decisions about its ongoing viability,” Mr Annett said.

Sounding out technology through art An exhibition by renowned sound designer and composer Alisdair Macindoe is urging people to question their relationship with technology. Noncompete, running at The Substation in Newport, comprises six robotic musical instruments that play an algorithmic piece of music being written by a computer over the month-long exhibition. Macindoe, who recently received a Bessie Award – the New York Dance and Performance Awards – said the exhibition was a culmination of a year-long residency at The Substation.
“The piece really is a space to engage with technology making music as a way to ask questions about our relationship with technology and what that means,” he said. “That question is: Are we thinking about the agency that we are giving technology as it develops, and by giving that technology agency what are the implications of that handover? “Anyone who’s interested in listening to new music and experiencing robotic music will find something in this show. “It’s not highbrow exclusive contemporary

The theft of two statues from Altona Pier has shocked the local community. They were part of a set of five bronze statues by sculptor Pauline Fraser depicting marine creatures that are part of the Hobsons Bay Coastal Trail. Titled Seaborn, the artwork commissioned by Hobsons Bay council, was installed at the corner of the Esplanade and Pier Street in 2005. The set had comprised a cuttlefish, weedy sea dragon, leatherjacket, crab and shell. Thieves have cut the crab and weedy sea dragon from their steel plinths. Hobsons Bay mayor Angela Altair labelled the vandalism and theft as “senseless” and said many people in the community would be upset. Altona Village Traders Association president Kim Walsh described the theft as “disgusting”. “Altona people have taken ownership of them and are very proud of them,” he said. The theft of the crab and weedy seed dragon has been reported to Altona North police. The council is in discussions with the artist about replacing the works, the cost of which is not yet known.

Warning over dodgy notes

Lifesavers in Oz squad By Goya Dmytryshchak Williamstown lifesavers are taking on the world. Seven Williamstown Swimming and Life Saving Club lifesavers have been selected for the eight-athlete inflatable rescue boat racing squad to represent Australia at the Lifesaving World Championships in Adelaide during November. Kate Czerny, Calum Dickson, Abby Esdale, Shaun Leith, Rachael Moloney, Rhys Treloar
and Alastair Thomas will be joined by Samantha Pownall from Barwon Heads 13th Beach Surf Life Saving Club. Esdale said the team was excited to be competing against the world’s best. “Basically, it’s us against the world,” she said. “Countries like Japan, Germany, New Zealand will all be there. “It’s pretty exciting, nerve wracking, as well. But I think Australia has a good lifesaving background, so I think it will be a good competition for the rest of the world.”
The team will be racing the boats commonly known as “red rubber duckies” over about three days. Last month, Williamstown Swimming and Life Saving Club’s racing squad took out the Australian IRB Championships, securing Victoria’s second only national IRB title by beating Queensland’s Broadbeach Surf Life Saving Club by a point. The Lifesaving World Championships are held every two years, with the previous event held in Netherlands.
A Laverton clothing retailer is warning other traders to be wary after being given six counterfeit $50 banknotes. Double C Jeanery retail assistant Ben Sydenham said a man had entered One of the fake $50 the Aviation Road notes. (Facebook/Double store on July 24 and C Jeanery Laverton) went to pay for two jackets and other clothing. “He had a roll of notes and he just used them,” he said. “When he handed them to me, you couldn’t tell. They just looked like new notes, they were fine. “But when we had all the notes together doing cash-up [counting all the money at the end of the day] we could tell that they were fake. “You’re meant to try to rip the note and this one didn’t rip, which is what the real ones don’t do.” He also said the portraits of David Unaipon and Edith Cowan looked real but felt grainy. The Reserve Bank of Australia advises people who come across a suspected counterfeit banknote to handle it as little as possible, store it in an envelope, note down any relevant information about it and report the matter to state or federal police. Woman jailed for stabbing death By Goya Dmytryshchak A Wyndham Vale woman has been sentenced to nine years’ jail for the manslaughter of a man at a Williamstown boarding house. Daniel “Danny” O’Brien, 37, was stabbed in the chest with a large kitchen knife on December 9, 2016, at the Old Royal Hotel on Nelson Place. Immediately after stabbing him, Kerry Jones, now 40, picked up their baby and walked across the road to hand herself in at Williamstown police station. In her sentencing remarks, Supreme Court Judge Lesley Taylor last week said Jones and Mr O’Brien had been in a relationship since 2013. “It was a volatile relationship, marred by illicit drug use and domestic violence,” Justice Taylor said. “You were both users of ‘ice’ and seemingly chronically short of money. “Those close to each of you observed you both engage in aggressive behaviour. There were instances of physical violence.” The court heard that in April, 2015, Jones attended Werribee police station to report that Mr O’Brien had grabbed her around the throat, as well as earlier incidents in which he had threatened to harm and kill her. Mr O’Brien was charged with assault, to which he pleaded guilty. The police obtained an intervention order on Jones’ behalf and, with the support of Anglicare and Yarra Housing, she found independent accommodation. In October, 2015, Jones again attended
Werribee police station to report that she had armed herself with a knife after being punched twice in the head by Mr O’Brien, with whom she had become pregnant. However, she later signed a statement of no complaint. The same month, police charged Mr O’Brien with breaching an intervention order. The child was born in May, 2016. The night before Mr O’Brien’s death, Jones organised for another man to drive her and her baby to Williamstown. “You were seemingly anxious to contact Mr O’Brien, sending 13 text messages and making 54 unanswered calls to him in the space of about two hours,” Justice Taylor said. “You arrived at the boarding house at approximately 8.35pm and gained access to Mr O’Brien’s room by climbing through the window and unlocking the door. Mr O’Brien returned about 15 minutes later. “Shortly after midnight, another resident of the boarding house heard a woman’s voice from Mr O’Brien’s room repeatedly shouting, ‘Where is my drugs’.” The next morning, a different resident and an outside construction worker heard sounds of arguing. Mr O’Brien had been preparing a syringe of methylamphetamine for his use or having just used that syringe when he was fatally stabbed. The court heard Jones had a prior conviction for stabbing in 2009 the father of her eldest child, which he survived. Jones must serve a minimum of seven years before being eligible for parole.

Bridging cultures A Newport art company has been awarded a $120,000 grant to create a light-box installation focusing on the West Gate Bridge as part of the Art & Industry Festival. Donna Jackson’s Hubcap Productions will use the VicArts grant for the outside gallery, to be created by Bindi Cole Chocka, and three more exhibitions over the next two years. The light-box installation will be launched in Paine Reserve to coincide with the festival’s opening in mid-November. Jackson said light-boxes containing contemporary images of the West Gate Bridge would be put on the back of Vinnies and Seagulls hotel in Newport.
She said the project stemmed from a collaboration with indigenous musician James Henry (Jimmy Little’s grandson) who recorded sounds in and around West Gate Bridge and a film shot by Chocka driving across the bridge. “It’s a bridge between indigenous/ non-indigenous culture and our story of the bridge and the bridge collapse,” Jackson said. Chocka said the West Gate Bridge encapsulated links between art and labour. The Art & Industry Festival will be held in Hobsons Bay from November 16-25. Goya Dmytryshchak

Immunisation reminder launched

Back where it all started By Benjamin Millar Rare newspaper clippings that helped pave the way for Footscray to enter the Victorian Football League almost a century ago will soon be on proud display at Whitten Oval. The historic compendium, recently donated by Maribyrnong council to the Bulldogs Museum, was compiled by then town clerk John Gent.
Maribyrnong mayor Cuc Lam recently presented the documents to Western Bulldogs chief executive Ameet Bains after they were discovered in a clean-out of the council’s records. The compilation of rare newspaper articles, event notices and program collected in 1924 were integral to the elevation of the Footscray Bulldogs into the VFL in 1925. They trace the club’s unexpected 28-point
win over the Essendon Football Club in an exhibition match known as Dame Nellie Melba’s Appeal for Limbless Soldiers. The October 4 clash featured Footscray as that season’s Victorian Football Association premiers and Essendon as the premier’s of the break-away Victorian Football League. As well as raising £2800 for the appeal, the win has gone down in history as a key factor in the Bulldogs being accepted into the VFL.
A new campaign to encourage parents to vaccinate their babies and toddlers has been launched in the west. The North Western Melbourne Primary Health Network, which covers areas including Maribyrnong, Hobsons Bay, Brimbank, Melton and Wyndham, hosted the campaign’s official launch in Newport last week. The campaign, “It’s time to immunise Melbourne”, has been designed to remind families to stay on track with immunisations for youngsters aged between 12 and 18 months. Network’s chief executive Christopher Carter, said that vaccines given at this time of life helped to protect children against diseases including meningococcal, chickenpox, flu and measles. Adjunct Associate Professor Carter said some areas of inner Melbourne had some of the lowest vaccination rates in the state and that all municipalities in the north and west fell under the 95 per cent immunisation target rate set by the state government. “Vaccinating your children is one of the most important things you can do to keep them safe and well, so it’s time to make time to immunise,” he said. Kristine Kowings and Sharon Walsh want people to go the reusable route. (Damjan Janevski)
Bag decision bagged A Hobsons Bay environmental group that makes reusable cloth bags has criticised Coles supermarket for its plastic bag stance. Hobsons Bay Boomerang Bags has moved its box filled with material bags out of the Altona Coles into Altona IGA supermarket, less than 300 metres away. Coles and Woolworths removed single-use plastic bags on July 1 but said they would hand out free reusable bags until August 1. Coles then said it would hand out its plastic 15 cent “Better Bags” for free until further notice, before doing another backflip and announcing a new cut-off date of August 29. Boomerang Bags member Sharon Walsh, who is also Altona Village Traders Association’s liaison officer, criticised Coles for its actions.
“They’ve kept the plastic bags because they’ve caved in for a minority,” she said. “They’ve now got their plastic bags … people are walking around advertising Coles.” A Coles spokesman defended the chain’s extension of time for handing out free bags. “We want to do everything we can to help all customers, and there are some who have found it difficult to get into the routine of bringing their own bags or knowing how many they need when they shop,” he said. Boomerang Bags can be found at various locations including Altona’s IGA supermarket, Hobsons Bay Civic Centre, Williamstown library and Replenish health food store. Goya Dmytryshchak

Whistleblower bids for Footscray By Benjamin Millar The whistleblower who blew the lid on state Labor’s “red shirts” affair will be contesting the seat of Footscray at the state election. Jake Finnigan, a former staffer who raised the alarm about Labor’s misuse of almost $400,000 of taxpayer funds in 2014, announced the candidacy last week – just hours after being subjected to a police strip-search as part of their investigation into the matter. Finnigan said the strip-search took place before being interviewed about claims of making a false document.
“I am co-operating with police throughout this matter, I am glad to see that this rorts investigation is finally reaching a point where things are going ahead,” Finnigan said. Victoria’s Ombudsman has found hundreds of thousands of taxpayer dollars were used to pay for Labor campaigners called the “red shirts”. Labor has since referred a number of Liberal and National Party MPs to Victoria Police for investigation, claiming they inappropriately used electorate office staff for political campaigning during normal business hours. Finnigan, a Footscray resident since 2012,
said the government has gone to great lengths to avoid scrutiny over the matter, including challenges to the Victorian Ombudsman’s investigation. The Ombudsman found electorate officers for Labor MPs, who were paid by taxpayers, were inappropriately diverted to carry out work for the party’s successful 2014 election campaign. Finnigan said the criminal investigation into Labor by Victoria Police’s Fraud and Extortion Squad comes at a “desperate and critical time”. Finnigan intends to run as an independent candidate “on a strong anti-corruption
platform to shine a light on the bad things this government has done”. “With Labor, the Liberal/National coalition, and the Greens all facing allegations of misusing electorate officers for campaign purposes, we need strong independent voices in Parliament now more than ever,” Finnigan said. Incumbent Footscray MP Marsha Thomson will be retiring at the election, making Labor’s Katie Hall the favourite to win the safe seat. Angus McAlpine has won preselection to contest the seat for the Greens. – with The Age
New spin on the wizard Musical theatre lovers will follow the yellow brick road to Braybrook this weekend when a new production of The Wiz kicks off. Caroline Chisholm Catholic College’s latest musical will be performed on Friday and Saturday nights, with this year’s production featuring more student involvement than ever. The college’s head of performing arts, Donna Spillane, said more roles in production were opened up this year, with students embracing the challenge. “The kids have been amazing,” she said. “In the past, the shows have always been very staff driven. “But this year I wanted the kids to make it their own, so they’ve stepped up to costume and set design, directing, choreography, lighting. “Basically everything you need to put on a
show has had a very heavy student involvement … they’ve really embraced those roles and I’m just so proud of all of them.” The Wiz has its own spin on The Wizard of Oz story. “It’s a funky, vibrant and relatively modern musical which has a familiar storyline that people know, so it will be a fun show to come along to,” Ms Spillane said. “We’ve actually got quite a few local retirement villages coming along. “We did it last year for one local one, and word seems to have spread and more want to come, which is a fantastic thing to do. “I can’t wait to see it all come together.” The Wiz will be performed on Friday and Saturday, August 10 and 11, from 7pm. Rat baits taking deadly toll on birds of prey Hobsons Bay wildlife rescuers and vets are urging people to use alternatives to rat bait after seeing barn owls and other birds of prey become sick or die from secondary poisoning. Two birds brought into care in the past week have died after eating vermin that had consumed rat bait. Donna Dorrington said her father had found a black-shouldered kite at Altona’s Cherry Lake and her cousin found a barn owl in her Spotswood backyard within about a week. “There’s rat traps and other things that you can do rather than lay out rat bait if you’re close to areas like Cherry Lake that has lots of birds of prey around,” she said. Hobsons Bay Vet Clinic nurse and birds of prey carer Wendy Black, who could not save the two birds, said very few survived secondary poisoning. “It’s worse in winter months because I think the mice, as they get cold, they start to go into factories and into people’s homes and so people start baiting,” she said. “The mice that have eaten the bait leave the homes and then the birds of prey are picking them up and eating them and they’re dying of secondary rat poisoning.” Western Animal Rescue’s Leanne Kovach said there had been increased numbers of raptors coming in, mostly barn owls. “Half are starved and the other half are baited,,” she said. “They’re just eating multiple mice that have taken bait. “Sometimes it kills the animal instantly and other times they get a build up of toxins and it’s enough for them not to be able to feed or get off the ground for a week or two, so they come in thin as well.”

Bird Life Australia and the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning have identified rat bait as being the most likely cause of the recent deaths. The department advises swapping poisonous baits for humane traps or to dispose of poisoned rodents so birds of prey can’t find them. Injured animals can be reported to a local wildlife rescue or vet, or Wildlife Victoria on 1300 094 535. Goya Dmytryshchak

Jail term for Fitzroy rape
MAYOR CUC LAM AND MP MARSHA THOMSON
Pontoon makes a splash By Benjamin Millar Maribyrnong council hopes to reel in new visitors with the opening of a floating pontoon on the Maribyrnong River. Designed for fishing and temporary mooring of small boats, the new pontoon in Footscray will also help to safely launch water sports equipment such as kayaks. The 40-metre floating pontoon has been built about 100 metres north of the Hopkins Street Bridge near the Heavenly Queen Temple, on the edge of the Joseph Road residential
redevelopment precinct slated for almost 6000 new residents over the next decade. Maribyrnong council spent $150,500 on the pontoon while the state government chipped in $120,000 through the Boating Safety and Facilities Program. Footscray MP Marsha Thomson said the pontoon should improve safety. Maribyrnong mayor Cuc Lam said it is a great addition to the Maribyrnong River Trail. “I’m sure locals and visitors alike will enjoy using it – especially in the warmer months,” she said.
Works will also begin this month on the $800,000 rebuild of the iconic Henderson House Landing wharf behind the Footscray Community Arts Centre. Maribyrnong council and Parks Victoria have partnered to rebuild the wharf, closed for more than two years after a partial collapse in 2016. A new play and open space will also be built in the Hopkins Street bridge vicinity. The Hopkins Street Recreation Plaza will feature wider cycling paths, new lighting and a climbing wall with soft fall area. Works are due to finish by October.
A Braybrook man has been sentenced to six-and-a-half years in jail for raping a work colleague. Indra Bhandari must serve at least four years without parole after a jury found him guilty of rape and sexual assault over the incident in March last year. The County Court of Victoria heard Bhandari and the victim had both been working at a restaurant/bar in Fitzroy. Bhandari, then aged 29, met the victim, aged 23, at a nearby hotel for drinks after their shift. About 3am he offered to walk her home, then told her he would need to be up early to be in Fitzroy for a second job. The victim told Bhanderi that he could sleep on a couch, but later woke to find him sexually assaulting her before he raped her. She reported Bhandari to police later that day and he was arrested and taken to the Melbourne West police station, where he made a “no comment” record of interview. The court heard Bhandari was born in Nepal in 1987 and arrived in Australia on a student visa in 2008. He applied for a second student visa in 2010, but remained in Australia despite the visa expiring in 2015. Since his arrest in March 2017, he has been detained in immigration detention on Christmas Island and at the Maribyrnong Detention Centre. Benjamin Millar

Nathan working hard for his Olympic dream Williamstown’s Nathan Pellissier, who last year made a stunning return to para table tennis, has been named Victorian Disability Sport and Recreation Male Sportsperson of the Year. Pellissier told Star Weekly he felt very honoured. “I am grateful for the support given and the relationship I have with the Disability Sport and Recreation team,” he said. “At the moment I am living in Europe for the rest of the year, training hard for the upcoming Para World Championships in Slovenia in October. “Now in Munich, Germany, I will train and compete with high performance international squads and play top-level league competition throughout Europe, honing my preparation for the world championships and gaining valuable exposure to other international players. “Ultimately I aim to represent Australia at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics.” It has been a long road back for Pellissier who had two years out with injury after the 2014 World Championships in China. Pellissier, who has cerebral palsy, underwent a full hip reconstruction followed by bone grafting before he returned to competition. The procedures were needed because his bones and muscles grow at painfully different rates and impair his functioning. DSR chief executive Richard Amon said the awards were an opportunity to celebrate accessible and inclusive sport. “These awards are our opportunity to say thank you,” he said. “Thank you for showcasing the talent, tenacity and humanity that is abundant in the disability sport and recreation sector.”

Cuts raise asylum crisis fears By Benjamin Millar Asylum seekers living in Melbourne’s west will be left destitute under cuts to a vital support program, according to advocates. Melbourne’s west has the highest number of people seeking asylum in Victoria, with advocates believing they will be plunged into further disadvantage by cuts to the Status Resolution Support Services (SRSS) program. SRSS provides support to people who are living in the community on temporary visas, or who are in community detention while their
application for refugee status is assessed. It provides access to health services and a basic living allowance of $35 a day. The Department of Home Affairs has withdrawn the support from about 1500 people seeking asylum, giving them just 30 days to find work. Sherrine Clark, humanitarian services director of the Footscray-based Asylum Seeker Resource Centre (ASRC), said the cuts would push people and services to their limits. “These cuts are going to stretch services that are already stretched,” Ms Clarke said. “These
people have fled war and political persecution and are highly vulnerable.” Ms Clarke said the changes were another barrier restricting asylum seekers from becoming independent members of society. “This system is designed so that people become so broken they return home, but these people came here for a good reason and a lot would rather starve than die,” she said. The cuts come as the ASRC warns of a growing crisis in offshore processing of asylum seekers. Detention advocacy manager Natasha
Blucher said her team was dealing with an increasing number of mental health emergencies, with no real resettlement solutions on the horizon. “Our team provides support to around 200 people in offshore processing, and among those 200 people alone, we have recorded over 65 critical incidents this year,” she said. “These include self-harm, suicide attempts, physical assaults and sexual assaults. This policy has failed and it is breaking people.” About 1600 refugees and asylum seekers remain on Naura and Manus Island.
Stories of pride shared Wiradjuri woman and award-winning author Anita Heiss is coming to Newport to talk about her ground-breaking anthology, Growing up Aboriginal in Australia. Stories from footballer Adam Goodes, writer Tony Birch and opera singer Deborah Cheetham feature, along with many others. About 120 people made submissions; 52 stories were published. Ranging in age from 13 to 70, contributors are from all around the country and many Aboriginal nations; more than 50 per cent are women. “They’re full of hope and pride and it makes me think we’re going to be OK,” Heiss said. One of the book’s recurring themes is how being Indigenous came into the writers’ consciousness; Heiss’s experience is not unusual. “My parents didn’t sit me down and say ‘you’re Aboriginal’,” she said.
“When I was five, at a lovely little Catholic school … someone said, ‘You’re a really good counter for an abo’. I didn’t even know what that was. “They’d always sing out, in the days we all walked to and from school, [other kids would] sing out Abo, boong, coon, choccy drop, coco pop. Sometimes there was venom and sometimes there was fear.” Heiss will give an author talk as part of the Melbourne Writers Festival at Newport Community Hub on August 30 from 7-8pm. The event is free but registrations are required. Contributions to the Indigenous Literacy Foundation, for which Heiss is a lifetime ambassador, will be accepted on the night. First-aid training warning By Benjamin Millar
Taking pole position
(Damjan Janevski)
Clients of an Altona Meadows man who has been fined for offering unauthorised first aid training are being warned certification they received may be worthless. Paul Tempany, who was also fined $300,000 earlier this year for underpaying workers and falsifying pay records, has been fined a further $12,600 for providing “certified” first aid training without being registered. But Mr Tempany may escape paying the bulk of the outstanding fines after his company was liquidated with only $51 in the bank. Star Weekly reported in April that Mr Tempany and his company, Acute Health Pty Ltd, were fined $50,000 and $250,000 respectively after court action by the Fair Work Ombudsman over systemic underpayment of casual workers. Mr Tempany was also investigated by training authorities for offering “accredited and certified” training despite his company not being a registered training organisation. The Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA) has now slapped Acute Health Pty Ltd with a $12,600 fine for offering and providing a national Vocational Education and Training course without registration. The investigation found Acute Health Pty Ltd has not held registration as a registered training organisation (RTO) since 2008. The company enrolled students and delivered training through an ASQA-registered third-party, but this arrangement ceased in 2016. An ASQA spokeswoman said any qualification or statement of attainment issued since that time is invalid. Mr Tempany did not respond to requests for comment.
A Footscray real estate agency is proudly flying the flag for the suburb’s history of colourful characters. The late Bulldogs legend Ted Whitten and restaurateur Jimmy Wong are joined by furniture king Franco Cozzo and Turkish community leader Mehmet Balikel in being honoured by four flags flying over the Footscray office of Sweeney real estate. Sweeney Footscray director Tracey Dean said the idea was to take advantage of the prominent Barkly Street site to recognise iconic people in the western suburbs. Ms Dean said she mentioned the idea to Mr Cozzo a few months ago and he jumped at the chance to be involved. “Everyone knows Jimmy Wong in the local area,” she said.“Jimmy and my husband did a lot of charity things together, I went and saw [his wife] Maryanne and she said no problem.” Ms Dean said as a big fan of the Bulldogs there was no hesitation in choosing Teddy Whitten. Mehmet Balikel, a prominent local identity who lives near the office, rounded out the four. The flags have already attracted much attention, drawing people into the office to talk about their memories of those featured. “We are also keen for ideas for other flags going forward,” Ms Dean said. What do you like about Newport?
Can you tell me about your upcoming exhibition, Here & There, at Altona’s Joel Gallery?
What’s your favourite local cafe or eatery?
I am quite passionate about and have always been interested in birds, but more specifically, water and migratory birds. We were fortunate to have that whole underdeveloped stretch of coastline from Altona right through to Werribee South. What really caught my interest was the migration of some of these birds. These things can do 15,000 kilometres each way to their migrating areas. I grew up around the Stony Creek and the little backwash before the West Gate Bridge was built. We would catch frogs there and lizards around the railway lines. More recently, I’ve returned to painting, incorporating industrial landscape and the wildlife that you find there. I’m interested in nature in suburbia, nature in industrial landscapes.
I love places like Doyle and Sons in Spotty. Candied Bakery’s a real local asset. And a place like Two Birds Brewing, just to think you could
Rob Mancini is presenting an exhibition, Here & There, from September 1-6 at Altona’s Joel Gallery, with a launch on August 31.
Newport still has that community feel, our local shopping strip. It has a village atmosphere so it doesn’t feel that different to what it was like when I was a kid. What don’t you like? The urban sprawl, I guess. The areas of conservation value – from my point of view in terms of habitat – are shrinking because of development. The west, particularly, was like the last frontier until about 20 years ago. I understand it has to happen somewhere, however, it needs to be carefully managed to preserve enough to maintain some integrity as healthy habitat.

19 MARIBYRNONG & HOBSONS BAY STAR WEEKLY \ AUGUST 8, 2018
FOOD REVIEW STARWEEKLY.COM.AU
CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir gives El Toucan a fly You won’t want to go swimming for a few hours after eating bandeja paisa at El Toucan Cafe. But should you so desire, the facilities couldn’t be closer at hand – El Toucan is in the Maribyrnong Aquatic Centre, its seating gazing out upon the various swimming pools. El Toucan boss Frank Torres keeps the likes of chicken nuggets and burgers on his menu. As he says, this IS a swimming pool operation and he DOES want to stay in business. But he’s very proud to be offering a range of true-blue Colombian dishes. It’s to these we are drawn, as are the tables surrounding us inhabited by Colombian families. Bandeja paisa is something of an informal Colombia national dish. Frank tells us its roots lie in its evolution as a hearty lunch for early-starting, hard-working coffee growers. Nat goes the full bandeja paisa – a huge meal and something of a bargain at $20. I opt for the half serve – it’s not listed anywhere, but is available on request. Even it is a substantial meal and also a bargain at $12. Everything about this is mighty … avocado and chubby tortilla, expertly fried egg and rice, superbly creamy beans and fried ripe plantain. And meat – pork belly, chorizo and pulled beef that would match it with any barbecue joint. Empanadas con yuca ($9) are also outstanding. The three empanadas are made with corn meal, the casings stuffed with beef
EL TOUCAN CAFE Address: Maribyrnong Aquatic Centre, 1 Aquatic Drive, Maribyrnong Phone: 0400 924 608 mince and deep fried. They are joined by cassava chips that are fluffy and lovely. On an earlier, reconnaissance visit, I enjoyed sobrebarriga ($22) of slow-cooked beef skirt served with rice, avocado, cassava and sofrito. This, too, is a hefty and excellent meal. Though, in contrast to our other selections, in this case the meat is very tender and the cassava – playing the roast potato role – dryish and a little too starchy for my tastes. El Toucan has specials … on the day we visit there’s a liver dish on, while a few folks around us are enjoying what look like very good pork ribs – even if, as Frank maintains, they are less specifically Colombian than the likes of bandeja paisa. For those wanting to try the El Toucan cooking without making use of the centre’s other facilities, there is no admission charge. Winter hours for El Toucan Cafe are Monday-Friday 9am-8.30pm and Saturday-Sunday 9am-6pm.

Finding the right hearing aid ...... is only half the solution Marina Opacak, an audiologist who works with Cris Ivanidis, owner of Active Audiology, says hearing loss is a difficult condition to treat as many sufferers are not ready to take action, or feel confused about what to do. “Cris and I understand how difficult it can be. We’ve counselled hundreds of people through a range of emotions associated with accepting hearing loss and doing something about it. “Finding the right hearing aid is only half the solution. The other half is finding the right professional, one who puts people at ease, as well as being technically competent with fine-tuning the aid. If tuning isn’t done correctly, a hearing aid can feel uncomfortable or, even worse, be completely useless.” Marina helps many people who have been fitted at another clinic with supposedly “the best” hearing aids, only for them to leave the aid in their bedside drawer. “Makers of hearing aids will promise the latest and greatest technology, but we often see one ‘state-of-theart’ technology works beautifully for one person and not the other. Or that same aid was simply adjusted incorrectly to the client’s hearing profile. “After a 60-minute appointment, I’m able to re-tune the settings and make the aid feel comfortable and functional. Finding the right audiologist is as important as finding the right aid,” Marina says.
OTICON OPN Recommended for hearing in noisy environments
PHONAK BOLERO Recommended for when music or TV is difficult to understand
How is Active Audiology different to the “big” clinics? Active Audiology is an independent clinic, which these days is become rarer and rarer – just one in five clinics in Victoria is now independent. This means Cris and Marina are not tied to prescribing particular brands of hearing aids – which is what happens with corporate clinics. They use their own expertise and research to select the correct brand for their clients – and can choose from every brand on the market.
SIGNIA NX Recommended for difficulty talking on the phone
Free hearing aid trial Active Audiology is offering a free, no-obligation 14-day trial of the hearing aids featured on this page. These are the latest technology from four international hearing aid brands. Take them home for two weeks and experience them in your daily social environment.
STARKEY SOUNDLENS SYNERGY IIC Recommended when something small and discreet is required

A period facade, two living areas, three carpeted bedrooms, a car spot and metres from the bay … did we miss anything? This is a great property for those who want to dive right in to Williamstown life and enjoy everything there is to love about living on the bay. Easily updated over time with great bones, it is a great home as it stands. Every room is pleasing to the eye, with beamed ceilings downstairs, a neat and contemporary central galley kitchen, and all bedrooms upstairs. Walk to the shops and enjoy close proximity to schooling and public transport. If you work in the city, consider cycling to the punt on Douglas Parade and be across the river in moments. Enjoy the lifestyle and the genuine hygge feel in the single-fronted Victorian property, sure to delight.
Period features have been retained within this weatherboard residence, with the original hardwood floors restored and polished. The inviting lounge room has a wall-set gas heater with period-style timber surround. The adjoining large and formal-style meals area is fab for entertaining. It leads on to the renovated kitchen, which has stone benches set atop country-modern cabinetry and stainless-steel appliances with a central work bench. The three bedrooms have hardwood flooring, exposed timber picture rails, built-in robes and fans. With an undercover pergola out the back, off-street parking and a finished sideway, this place offers low-maintenance family living with large house appeal.

This neat as a pin family house is directly opposite Bruce Comben Reserve, Separation Creek, sports fields and children’s play equipment. The generous and contemporary kitchen has stainless-steel appliances and stone benches. Beyond the large, tiled meals area is a step-down lounge area. All three bedrooms have built-in robes and are carpeted. The central bathroom is contemporary and timeless. The deep concreted side drive leads past a secure and good-quality gate that secures the big backyard with a lawn, huge workshop/shed and a low-maintenance leisure space with a spa and barbecue area. Four undercover car spots are a great advantage, as is a price point that will be attractive to young families.
In the keeping of a single family for more than a century and a quick walk from Williamstown North Primary School and Williamstown North train station, this great property is much larger than it seems. It has rear access via Galatea Court. There are two cosy and carpeted bedrooms on the ground floor, one with a walk-in robe. The fantastic main bedroom is upstairs, with pitched roofline and loads of room to relax. Carpeted and with a study area, it is a highlight of the house. The living areas and kitchen downstairs are well renovated. The lounge room is of a good size, carpeted and gets terrific light from a large window, below which is built-in cabinetry. The galley-style kitchen has white cabinetry, stainless-steel appliances and room for a chair and table set. There is a separate meals area as well. Outside are a carport, decked area and nice garden.

Here is a property where the neo-federation style is done well. Set half a block from the bay and Bay Trail West, Williamstown Beach is not much further. It has a working castiron fireplace with an ornate period-style timber surround. The high ceilings continue, with deep

skirting boards, ornate architraves and timber floors offering that look and feel Victorian-era architecture is known for. The kitchen creates a mood that suits this property’s modern-cum-period style perfectly. Matte black appliances are set against timber cabinetry, painted with the on-trend Purebred paint. Set against gloss black subway tiling, it looks really smart. There’s loads of room for a large dining suite, the current furniture set next to a large window with a view of the in-ground pool.
The more casual lounge area is opposite the kitchen, and has another fireplace that is in good working order. A split-system takes care of temperature control on warmer days. Timber french doors open to the paved outdoor area, which beckon in the summer months. The slate tiling has been laid in a squared pattern, adding a subtle point of difference and an element of classy texture to the space. The frameless glass safety fence divides the entertaining zone from the solar-heated

in-ground pool and generous lawn. A large, deep grey shed offers great storage and blends into the landscaping. Back inside and upstairs, find four large bedrooms with hardwood floors, fan lights and built-in robes. The main bedroom has a bay window and access to the front balcony, where sea views can be enjoyed. Both bathrooms are in excellent condition, with federation-style tiling and custom cabinetry. 39 Hannan Street, Williamstown Entirely transformed rather than merely renovated – although its period origins were upheld and respected – this is a residence that delivers what you’ve always wished for from a family home in a location that also answers every requirement for lifestyle enjoyment. From every perspective it’s a stunning success. The refinement of a formal sitting room and the flexibility of a substantial home office lead to living/dining areas accompanied by a kitchen featuring integrated fridges, coffee machine and a butler’s pantry while a second kitchen caters alfresco style to sublime outdoor spaces, with a pool and spa. A main bedroom with dressing room and fabulous ensuite sets a luxurious precedent for three upstairs bedrooms that share a sensational lounge and two additional bathrooms, one ideally, intelligently placed on the downstairs level. A fully fitted theatre room, a guest suite with its bathroom and balcony, faultless finishes, hydronic heating and a double garage are among a list of extra attractions that leave nothing more to be desired. Moments from Williamstown HS, the beach, parks, shopping and transport. This house embodies perfection.

SPORT Munro wins McKellar memorial ride locked onto their tails, and the combined scratch and second scratch bunches locked on to the bunches ahead. The middle markers caught limit and second limit attempting to drop them on the last lap, but conditions were simply too light, allowing caught riders to sit on with ease. As this combined bunch passed the You Yangs, scratch rolled on by, so the last lap saw all bunches together, a few tempers frayed with everyone scrambling for a wheel. This infighting continued all the way to the last kilometre, when riders jostled for position for the sprint, with this mass bunch lunging toward the deceptive, inclined finish-line full gas and with varying levels of success. In the end, it was 17-year-old rising star and Williamstown resident Hamish Munro who had the legs, taking a strong win from Josh Zammit and Miles DaCosta.
An ecstatic Munro was singing the praises of his fellow scratch members after the race. “Everyone was taking their turn and we never skipped a beat and rolled pretty smoothly, which I think is why we caught second scratch quickly on lap two,” Munro said. “We were really flying, but it was too easy to hang on to the back so they all got on. “It was a pretty scrappy finish, so many guys stayed with us, so it was crowded. “I made sure I stayed up the front and I was getting ready for the bunch sprint.” Travis Small and Leigh Kelly were the first to attack with 300 metres to go. Munro kept them in check and launched his own attack, doing enough to hold off all comers. “It was one of those finishes where you just put your head down and push,” he said. Mark Micallef
Blues finish the job By Lance Jenkinson One key ingredient has turned Williamstown’s fortunes around in the Football Federation Victoria men’s state league 3. The Blues finishing in front of goal has left a lot to be desired, but coach Slobode Stojcevski seems to have found a solution to their goalscoring woes on the training track. In the past two matches, Williamstown has collected a maximum six points and entertained with five goals in the process, including two in Saturday’s 2-1 win over Essendon United at J.T. Gray Reserve. The Blues have had the lion’s share of possession and chances in the previous three matches, but failed to score a single goal in a draw and two losses. “What we weren’t doing was finishing off our chances,” Stojcevski said. “So the last two-and-a-half weeks, almost every session, the whole focus has been on finishing. “What that’s done is given a bit of confidence to the players when they are in front of goal.” Williamstown was not as dominant against Essendon United as it perhaps was in the previous month. However, their new-found efficiency in front of goal paid dividends. “The last time we played against Essendon, I would say that we created at least 10 clear-cut chances and only scored one goal,” Stojcevski said. “This time I think we created four or five chances and scored two goals. “The percentage was a lot higher and that made the difference.” Alex Vlassis had the midas touch in front of goal, scoring with a double. Vlassis put into action what the team had been training for in his go-ahead goal in the first half. “It was a really good opportunistic goal that was taken out of our training session the previous Thursday, where we worked on having extra runners into the box following up our shots,” Stojcevski said. “Our captain [Alex Dimitrijevic] took a shot, the keeper saved it but dropped it, then Alex was right on cue to tap it in. “It was the sort of stuff we probably haven’t been doing well the previous games.” Essendon United found an equaliser early in the second half. It set the stage for Vlassis to step up and score the winner with a strike with 10 minutes to go. “It’s no surprise that he’s scoring goals,” Stojcevski said. “His runs have been absolutely fantastic, he’s a fast boy and the defenders just can’t read him or keep up with him.”
IN THE DOGHOUSE ■ Last week I wrote that the AFL was belittling the VFL competition by trialling its experimental rules during VFL home and away games and I stand by that. Werribee and Coburg footy clubs were approached and both agreed to be the guinea pigs in a proper game, which is their call. Both teams sit towards the bottom of the VFL ladder, both are stand-alone VFL teams and both made the most of this opportunity to promote their clubs. The live television exposure was a bonus for the clubs and sponsors and the fact the eyes of the AFL footy world were on the game does not hinder the future prospects of potential draftees such as Sam Collins, Jack Henderson, Keegan Gray or Nick Coughlan. From a spectator point of view, the new rule seemed to have minimal impact on the game but I have no doubt once coaches see it in action, it will open up several new strategies. Whether it is radical enough to make watching two bad teams better, I strongly doubt. ■ Newport Power Football Club’s annual sports lunch last Friday was another good event with a very entertaining panel of Jess Duffin, Daniel Wells, Doug Hawkins and Adam Cooney. The 2008 Brownlow Medallist certainly did not hold back on his much talked about departure from Whitten Oval. Suffice to say, he is no fan of Brendan McCarthy or Peter Gordon and the way they handled his exit from the red, white and blue. Jess Duffin is a dual sportsperson playing at the top level in both cricket and football, which is a luxury that probably won’t last much longer, even though AFLW is shrinking, or that appears to be the plan. ■ I have expressed my thoughts on the over-zealous growth of women’s football before, but to now shrink the elite competition’s time frame – while expanding the participants – makes no sense. I agree with Daisy Pearce and others that it makes the competition farcical. As for comparing it to the World Cup, that was one of the most foolish statements I have ever heard. It is too late to go back to square one, but it is not too late to be realistic about the talent pool and the logistics involved to rein in the expansion. The women’s game has a bright and lucrative future. Let it evolve naturally. Talk to the people playing the game. They know better than any corporate executive where the game is going, and what the main issues are.

Seventh-placed Williamstown will get another chance to cause a bit of an upset when it travels to play promotion contenders FC Strathmore at Strathnaver Reserve on Saturday. In men’s state league 1, Altona City suffered a second straight loss, going down 2-1 to Banyule City, while Yarraville Glory was out-classed 3-1 by title contenders Preston Lions. Altona East Phoenix was mere fodder for Brimbank Stallions, downed 3-1 in men’s state league 2.
In men’s state league 4, Altona North stayed in the promotion hunt with a 2-1 win over Spring Hills. The women’s state league 3 promotion race was shaken up by Altona Magic’s 2-0 win over St Albans Saints. The Magic is now level on points with the second-placed Saints. In the NPL 2 west, Altona Magic is one win away from promotion after crushing Springvale White Eagles 4-0 at Paisley Park on Saturday.

In perfect racing conditions, riders set off in five bunches to contest the Footscray Cycling Club’s third annual Andrew McKellar Memorial Handicap. The handicap format required each bunch of riders to co-operate, stay intact and push themselves to the limit to keep the chasing bunches at bay and chase down the bunches ahead. The gun riders of scratch started out with a 21-minute deficit to make up over limit. With the sun shining and a light headwind, the five focused bunches set off from the Little River Reserve and headed out to complete five laps of the street circuit at the base of the You Yangs Regional Park. All five bunches managed to stay intact for the first few laps. The race heated up on lap four when limit and second limit merged, with the middle markers

Falcons maintain the pressure on ladder leaders City West Falcons finals hopes received a boost when they knocked off top side Hawks Netball in the Victorian Netball League championship division. With every match a must-win for the Falcons, the result is vital in the context of their season. The Falcons jumped out of the blocks and led by seven goals at quarter-time. They extended the lead at every break to go on to win 63-46. Falcons coach Marg Lind said it was a good performance. “We can’t afford to lose now,” she said. “We were fortunate they didn’t have Kim Commane and they had a younger attacking end. “The first few minutes were sloppy, but then
we looked good and it took the pressure off us. “We kept the foot down.” The Falcons shot at a massive 95 per cent accuracy for the match. Lind said it was an even performance from the side, with no standouts as the group worked well as a unit. She said it was good to finally have a few weeks in a row with their best line-up. For much of the season, the Falcons have been without several key players because of higher netball commitments. “It’s still a young line-up,” Lind said. “It’s a shame we haven’t had this group for a couple more weeks. “They’re getting better each week.” The result moves the Falcons back into the
top four, percentage ahead of DC North East Blaze. The Blaze faces bottom side Selkirk Sovereigns this week, while the Falcons face sixth-placed Peninsula Waves. If both Blaze and City West win, it sets up a virtual elimination final when the two sides meet in the final round. Lind said they weren’t looking any further ahead than this week. “We’re good enough, it’ll depend on the concentration level. We have to sustain it for 60 minutes of netball.” She said a loss this week could end their chances, with the Waves likely to get a percentage boost
All three Falcons sides had wins against the Hawks. The division 1 side defeated the Hawks 42-35. The Falcons sit fifth, two games outside the top four and still a mathematical chance of making finals. The under-19 side also sits fifth, but only a game outside the top four. They defeated the Hawks, 62-46. Lind said having the ANL players back was having a ripple affect across the three sides and they were seeing good results. She said the club was thrilled to have all three teams still in the finals mix at this stage of the season.

Jet’s dream gets real By Lance Jenkinson Western Jets midfielder Daly Andrews has the AFL recruiters yearning for more. Andrews has impressed as a wingman for the Jets in the TAC Cup and turned heads in his brief appearance for Vic Metro in the under-18 national championships, but the recruiters want to see even more of what he could potentially deliver if selected in the AFL draft later this year. Andrews will provide a more complete picture of his athletic abilities at the AFL Draft Combine. The 18-year-old is one of four Jets invited to the combine, along with captain Xavier O’Halloran, Buku Khamis and Zak Butters. To be selected for the combine, five clubs have to nominate the player. Andrews was humbled by the call-up. “I was pretty shocked at first, but really happy getting the invite,” he said. “To play AFL would be a dream and to get that little bit closer was great.” Andrews, who lives in Werribee and has loved football since his Auskick days at Werribee Centrals, also has a background in athletics through the Werribee Little Athletics Centre, where he was a junior hurdles champion. “Athletics has always been in the background,” he said. “The combine will be a chance to showcase my athletic ability. “A strength of mine is that I can play numerous positions. “The combine will help showcase that I can play back, forward and through the middle, with all the athletic tests they have there. “Hopefully, I can get really good numbers across all tests and come out happy with my performance.” Andrews has been a bolter from the pack in 2018. He was no sure selection for the Jets, though a growth spurt helped his cause. The Vic Metro selection came on the back of a stellar first half of the season. “This year, I grew over the pre-season and I was lucky enough to get picked for Jets,” he said. “I had a good first few games for the Jets and got selected for Vic Metro and now the combine. To get selected in that was good for me and good for my confidence as well.” Andrews continued his stellar season on Sunday, playing a significant role in the Jets’ 56-point win over Greater Western Victorian Rebels at the Williamstown Football Ground despite time off the ground with a hamstring niggle. While it has been a break-out year for Andrews, it has not all gone to plan. He was limited to just one game for Vic Metro at the national championships after suffering delayed concussion following the win over the Allies. Andrews was unluckily “falconed” by the football with the blow to the head significant enough to see him miss the remainder of the championships. “I felt fine after getting falconed, played the whole game out and sang the song after the

game, then I remember biting into a muffin after the game and feeling a bit dizzy,” he said. “It sort of progressed from there. I felt sick and went to hospital and was throwing up. I do remember the whole game.” Andrews, a VCE student at MacKillop College, was thrilled to get the opportunity

to represent Vic Metro. The Werribee Districts junior said it was a goal of his at the start of the year to pull on the Big V. “That meant the world to me,” he said. “To be in that elite environment really helped develop my footy and me as a person.”
It was a rough weekend for Altona in the Hockey Victoria men’s Premier League. The Seagulls were shut out at home by Waverley in a 1-0 loss at their home ground on Saturday. The fallout of the defeat means the Seagulls tumble from sixth to eighth on the ladder. With three rounds to go, all is not lost for Altona, as they remain clinging to a spot in the top eight. However, the Seagulls cannot afford a slip up now, otherwise some hungry teams on the outer could seize control of their finals’ spot. Altona will be looking to reload for a crucial away game against high flying Camberwell at Matlock Reserve on Saturday. It will be a good chance for the Seagulls to flash their finals’ credentials. Footscray is flying high in fourth spot after a 4-1 win over Melbourne University. Liam Braithwaite, Robert Wilson, Sam McIntosh and Kyle Gildea found the back of the net in the win for the Bulldogs. The Bulldogs will travel to ninth-placed MCC on Saturday. In the women’s Premier League, Altona had an entertaining 3-3 draw with Waverley. Danielle Schubach scored a double for the Seagulls, while Jessica Brennan added the other. Footscray hit an unexpected speed hump in a 3-1 loss to bottom-of-theladder Melbourne University. The finals-bound Bulldogs could only manage one goal for the game off the stick of Olivia Colasurdo. The Dogs will be desperate to bounce back when at Camberwell on Saturday. Lance Jenkinson

World cup nod ends years of woe By Lance Jenkinson It was the phone call that brought tears of joy to Footscray baseballer Abbey McLellan. Seven years after joining the Australian squad, McLellan would finally realise her dream of representing her country at the Women’s Baseball World Cup. In one conversation, the pain of missing out on three world cups had eased, knowing she will be on the flight to the US for the nine-day event in Florida starting on August 22. “When I got the phone call from the coach, it was pretty much tears straight away,” McLellan said. “I was at home with mum when I got the call, she was actually asleep on the couch, so I ran over and woke her up. “She saw me with tears running down my face and was like ‘oh my God, what’s happened’, not knowing if it was a positive or a negative. “I started smiling and she knew, so we jumped up and we started hugging and screaming. “It was very funny.” McLellan has been the untimely baseballer. Each time she has been on the verge of a world cup appearance, she has endured a bump in the road. Ankle, elbow and knee injuries have hampered her progress at the worst possible times. Thankfully, this campaign is going to plan, though McLellan will play it safe and “cross my fingers” for good health. “It’s been a long road,” the Spotswood resident said. “It’s been a fair few years that I’ve been plugging away at getting into this team. “To finally get the reward was incredible.” McLellan is the first home-grown Footscray
Abbey McLellan has been selected for Australia because of her power hitting, but she will also be the team’s back up catcher. (Shawn Smits)
player to represent Australia at a Women’s Baseball World Cup. However, she is not the first Bulldog to don the green and gold on the biggest stage. That honour went to WA recruit Morgan Doty, who was playing for Footscray at the time of her world cup appearance. “She’s technically our first Australian rep,
but I’m our first home-grown rep,” McLellan said proudly. “She was living over here studying, so she had moved to Melbourne and started playing with us at Footscray.” McLellan treats the Footscray Baseball Club like a second home, well maybe even on par with her first home.
She is a favourite at the kennel and has been inundated with congratulations since her world cup selection. “It’s like a big family there,” she said. “I’ve been at the club since I was nine, so I’ve grown up there, played all my junior baseball and all my senior women’s baseball there. “It’s my home and I’d almost put it above my first home because I spend more time there than I do at my actual home. “They were all ecstatic for me.” McLellan wants her selection in the team to be a catalyst for more girls and women in the western suburbs to take up the sport. The 23-year-old envisages a future where she does not have to play in men’s competitions, like she did this year with the Williamstown Wolves, to face a more challenging standard of pitching. “I wasn’t cruising through the women’s competition, but it wasn’t super challenging, so I went to Williamstown and asked if I could play with them under permit … just so I could get some more game time,” McLellan said. “In the western suburbs, it’s really just us and Essendon that have division 1 women’s teams. “The more publicity and the more people who know about it and see it being a successful and popular sport is only going to be good obviously.” McLellan will play at first base and be the back-up catcher for Australia. The power hitter took part in a training camp in Japan to prepare for the world cup, but it will do little to settle the nerves come the big show. “Being my first world cup, I’m a bit nervous for it, but I’m definitely excited to finally get over there and just get going with the baseball,” she said.
The battle is on for prime positions in the WRFL finals
With the Western Region Football League division 1 finalists locked in at the weekend, Lance Jenkinson predicts which teams will advance to the finals with all-important double chances and which teams will be sudden death all way Deer Park
First, 48 points, 216 per cent Story so far Deer Park is still the team to beat. The five-time defending premier made a slow start to the season, dropping two of its opening three matches, but has since won 11 of its past 12, including a runaway 62-point victory over St Albans on Saturday. The run home: Caroline Springs (home), Werribee Districts (away), Wyndhamvale (home) A tough away trip to Werribee Districts would be the only concern for Deer Park. Should it slip up, there’s no way the Lions will concede to Caroline Springs or Wyndhamvale at home soil, so a double chance is a sure thing.
Altona
Second, 48 points, 164.2 per cent Story so far The general consensus after 15 rounds is that Altona is, just, the second best team in the race. Its has an identical win-loss record to Deer Park at 12-3. A concern could be its fluctuating scores for, but its defence is arguably the best in the league. The Vikings beat Caroline Springs by 47 points on Saturday. It was the sixth time this season Altona had won a match while not putting triple figures on the scoreboard. The run home: Werribee Districts (home), Wyndhamvale (away), Hoppers Crossing (home) In a tricky run home, the Vikings have only one “gimme” game with two even money bets. The good news is the 50-50 games, against Werribee Districts and Hoppers Crossing, will be played at JK Grant Reserve, which increases their odds of victory. Expect the Vikings to hold on for a double chance.
Werribee Districts
Third, 48 points, 127.85 per cent Story so far Werribee Districts coach Chris Gilham has playfully bemoaned the fact his side had only lost two games for the season, yet was back in third place. In any other season, the Tigers could well be premiership favourites, but not in 2018. What has hurt the Tigers is their two draws. A bounce of the ball here or there and the Tigers could be on top. Instead, they will enter the run home in third and with a whole lot of work to do to claim a double chance. The run home: Altona (away), Deer Park (home), Spotswood (away) Ouch. This is the toughest run home of the five clubs fighting for a double chance. Earlier in the season, this three-week block of matches yielded just one win and two losses for the Tigers. Even with their great recent form, which sees them undefeated in six, it’s hard to see the Tigers scrapping enough wins out of this draw to secure a double chance. With their percentage the worst in the top five, they will probably need an extra win over two other sides in the five, so they face an uphill battle.
Hoppers Crossing
Fourth, 46 points, 130.7 per cent% Story so far Hoppers Crossing was a bit of an unknown quantity in the off season. The Warriors had lost a lot of experience due to injury and defections, so the jury was out as to whether they would keep pace with the leading teams. Coach Steve Kretiuk trusted the youngsters and never let the side bottom out. It was 3-3 after six rounds as the players found their feet. Since then, all Hoppers Crossing has done is win plenty of matches, eight out of their past nine to be exact, with a draw in the mix as well.
Can Altona and Spotswood snare one of the precious finals double chances? (Damjan Janevski)
The run home: Wyndhamvale (away), Albion (home), Altona (away) It’s good news if you are a Hoppers Crossing fan. You play the bottom two sides in the next two weeks and then have a pre-finals tune-up against Altona. With red hot form and a relatively easy draw, expect to see the Warriors pounce on a double chance at the expense of Werribee Districts.
Spotswood
Fifth, 40 points, 137.8 per cent Story so far Spotswood coach Anthony Eames has conceded that his young side may not yet be at the same level as Deer Park and, possibly, Altona. That’s not to say that Eames wouldn’t back his side on
its day to beat them. But Spotswood has beaten Deer Park, thrashed Werribee Districts and got to within one point of Altona, so will present a serious threat no team will want to meet in September. The run home: St Albans (home), Caroline Springs (away), Werribee Districts (home) On form, you would tip Spotswood to win the first two games. If other results fall their way, the Woodsmen could find themselves playing for a double chance in a tantalising final round battle with Werribee Districts. We believe the horse may have already bolted, though, given how far back they are in the race for a double chance. They should put all their energy into preparing for an elimination final.
