Prison for Yarraville taxi robbery By Benjamin Millar A man has been sentenced to four years in jail after pleading guilty to his role in robbing a taxi driver in Yarraville. Asad Nur must serve at least two and a half years in prison for the 2017 incident, which occurred after he had been awake for three days on a methylamphetamine binge. The County Court of Victoria heard the taxi was called to Kent Street on the morning
of June 27. Nur and his alleged accomplice entered the taxi and travelled a short distance before Nur told the driver to pull over because he had forgotten something back at his house. When the driver stopped, the co-accused produced a large knife and demanded that the taxi driver hand over all of his belongings. Nur threatened the driver with a bottle opener, forcing him to hand over his wallet, mobile phone and house key.
The pair fled along Kent Street before turning into Stephen Street to a waiting car. Nur was arrested a week later, telling police the robbery was his co-accused’s plan and he thought the knife was fake. The court heard the driver lost his job as a result of the armed robbery because he could no longer concentrate on his job. He was left scared and had difficulty sleeping after the incident. In sentencing Nur, Judge Christopher Ryan
said his offending was committed on a soft target. “Armed robberies committed on soft targets in our community are all too prevalent,” he said. “There have been serious consequences to your victim as a result of your conduct. “By this sentence I must punish you, publicly denounce your conduct and deter you and others from committing this kind of crime.” Nur has served 249 days of pre-sentence detention.
Fresh look at Footscray Footscray’s iconic markets are the character-filled backdrop to a fresh new TV series. FRESH!, a ‘dramedy’ by Maribyrnong writer and producer Nikki Tran, is set amid the hubbub of the colourful fresh food market. The series features several familiar Footscray faces, including a cameo from Tony Cavallaro, the west’s very own “Mr Cannoli”. Filmed over recent months, FRESH! will premiere at the ‘Series Mania Festival of TV’ at ACMI this Friday, before launching online next Wednesday. Tran said Footscray Market provides fertile ground for filming the series, offering a diverse microcosm of larger society. Her upbringing involved countless trips to the market with her mother and grandmother. Tran took pains to ensure the cast and crew working on the production truly reflected the community she was trying to capture. Tran was a 2016 finalist in the BlueCat Screenplay Competition for her short film

screenplay When We Run. A member of Footscray Community Arts Centre’s West Writers group, her theatre show Sidekicked was awarded Best Words and Ideas Show at the 2017 Melbourne Fringe festival. Tran said FRESH! is an attempt to capture a slice of Footscray life under threat from the march of gentrification into the traditionally working class and multicultural suburb. Each short episode focuses on a different character, from a Chinese butcher and Iraqi-Egyptian couple starting up a Middle Eastern eatery to a sharp businesswoman from Korea and ageing nonna running a deli. Tran said she would now love to take the characters and spin the show out into a full series for television. Tickets to the premiere screening are booked out, but all episodes will be released online on July 25. Details: facebook.com/freshwebseries
