Jay’s gift of life

Brad Clucas with a picture of his brother Jay. (Joe Mastroianni)

By Goya Dmytryshchak The family received the letter before Christmas. Newport’s Brad Clucas said he has no doubt his mother has since pored over it many times quietly with a cup of tea. Two years ago, Brad’s younger brother, Jay, died after battling depression. The 32-year-old tradie from Derrimut had been going through personal issues. Jay was on life support for four days at Footscray Hospital, where his family learnt he was an organ donor. Brad said Jay had been the life of the party and would always make sure other people were OK.

His organ donation may have helped upwards of 12 people. The letter was their first thank you received from a recipient of one of his organs. “It was one of immense gratitude,” Brad said. “We all read it before Christmas and the recipient was saying that they didn’t really know how to start writing the letter but eventually wrote two or three paragraphs. “Ultimately, it was just, the gift from Jay, they were extremely appreciative of and really grateful for the sacrifice that he made. “It meant everything to mum. “I’ve no doubt mum quietly sat here with a cup of tea and remembered a lot of things, but not only tears of sadness but tears of joy

and immense pride in Jay. We talk too much about TV celebrities or football people being heroes but when you’re really saving lives – people who are donating organs, paramedics, etcetera – they’re people that are the heroes. “We all at times go through just periods of sadness and loss and you never forget, but you celebrate those lives and the courageous thing that he’s done.” People are being encouraged to have the conversation about organ donation during DonateLife Week from July 29 to August 5. Last year, 148 Victorian families made the decision to donate their loved ones’ organs. These donors donated 465 organs to save the

lives of 389 recipients. As at the end of June, Victoria’s donation numbers for 2018 so far are up 31 per cent on the same time last year as 93 families have agreed to donate their loved ones’ organs. About 1400 Australians are on waiting lists for the call that a life-saving organ has become available. People who have previously recorded a donation decision on their driver’s licence still need to join the Australian Organ Donor Register. It takes less than a minute to register online at www.donatelife.gov.au Anyone experiencing mental health issues can call Lifeline on 13 11 14.

Units on the rise in Altona North Altona North units recorded the highest price growth in the state over the past decade, the latest Top Ten in Ten Years report by onthehouse.com.au shows. The median unit price rose from $248,314 in May 2008 to $655,491,491 last May – an increase of 164 per cent. Altona came in at No. 7 in the top 10 growth suburbs, with median unit prices rising 103.4 per cent from $315,331 to $642,750. Onthehouse.com.au, a CoreLogic business,

looked at the top 10 performing suburbs in each state in Australia over the past 10 years, analysing both houses and units, based on the median value data in May 2018. Sweeney Altona director Shawqi Ein said he believed Altona North and Altona had always been undervalued. “People started to discover those suburbs just in the last 18 months,” he said. “Altona North has very, very, close proximity to the city, bordering Newport and Williamstown. “It’s a small suburb in Hobsons Bay but it

has the major shopping centre in Hobsons Bay – you have three major shopping centres in Altona North.” He said Altona had the beach, a village lifestyle and Altona Primary School, which had been voted one of the state’s top 100 schools. Mr Ein said bigger blocks in Altona North and Altona were very expensive, so a unit was an attractive choice for first home buyers, young families and elderly people who wanted to downsize in the suburb they had lived their whole lives. Williams Williamstown sales consultant

Gemma Armstrong said many bigger blocks were being subdivided for units in Altona North and Altona. “They’re definitely growing and developing very quickly so there are lots of old blocks that were originally 600-700 square metres that have been snapped up and developed over the last 10 years,” she said. “With Melbourne rapidly growing out further, people want to be as close to the city as possible. “Altona North was once a very affordable suburb but now has become an inner-city suburb, really.”

A Yarraville chef’s dream unfolds Australia’s natural elements and the west’s industrial heritage collide in the latest venture for Yarraville chef Julian Hills, a rising star of the restaurant world. Hills cut his teeth in the kitchens of The European and the Courthouse Hotel before taking over six years ago as head chef at Paringa Estate on the Mornington Peninsula. He collected a Good Food Guide chef’s hat in his first year running the show there, retaining the hat for the next five years. But a return to the city beckoned and Hill has spent the past six months working on every last detail for Navi, his first restaurant as a chef owner. “Being a chef owner just by myself it’s pretty intense, but it’s been fantastic,” he said. “I’ve thought about every detail in here – the tables are made by a local furniture maker with recycled wood, I’ve done all the pottery. It has been a labour of love.” The fit-out of the Gamon Street restaurant includes gumleaf green paint and raw slate to evoke Australia’s natural landscape, but there are also plenty of nods to the industrial. “It’s surrounded by the West Gate Bridge and the docklands, so it’s that idea of Australian native colours with that backdrop of industry,” Hills said. Navi’s focus will be on fine dining in an intimate atmosphere. Hill will be offering five or eight-course tasting menus reflecting his creative flair and passion for showcasing local ingredients and producers. “Something I loved about the peninsula was dealing with individual farms,” he said. “I wanted to bring that here, so I’m still going to be heading down there once a week and trying to pick things up and trying to work with exactly what’s in season and good now.” Hill is excited to be bringing fine dining to his own neighbourhood, noting a trend away from top restaurants being located in the centre of the city. “We were looking for a nice neighbourhood-feel vibe to the restaurant,” he

Hospital safety gets a boost Thirteen more security cameras will be installed at Williamstown Hospital to improve the safety of patients, visitors, volunteers and staff. Williamstown MP Wade Noonan said the hospital had received nearly $60,000 in state government funding for the CCTV cameras. It is among 46 hospitals and mental health facilities to share $8 million funding for safety upgrades, including GPS tracking systems for lone workers, CCTV upgrades, swipe-card access for doors, carpark safety zones, duress systems and personal duress alarms. “This investment in Williamstown Hospital will expand their CCTV coverage and improve the safety outcomes for patients and staff,” Mr Noonan said. “The sad reality for our health care workers is that occupational violence, both verbal and physical, happens almost every day.” Western Health spokeswoman Catherine Somerville said Williamstown had fewer incidents than Footscray or Sunshine hospitals, and were usually of a different nature. “The types of incidents that occur at Williamstown tend to be more related to patient illness and factors such as delirium, rather than deliberate aggression,” she said. Latest crime statistics showed there were 32 assaults on emergency services workers in Hobsons Bay for the year to March, compared with 48 the previous year. The number of assaults on emergency services workers in Maribyrnong rose from 38 to 43 for the same period.

Navi chef Julian Hills. (Ed Sloane)

said. “I was looking for something that wasn’t in a strip, something that could be a surprise once you walked in – it could be anywhere once you were inside.” Hills said tonight’s official opening of Navi was a decade-long dream. “Ten years of talking about this and it’s

coming to fruition – that’s what I’m most happy about,” he said. “I get to cook my food, run my style of service, I’ve made all the ceramics – this is me.” Details: restaurantnavi.com.au

All sports of winners A project aimed at getting young people with mental or physical disabilities involved with sports clubs across Melbourne’s west has been recognised with a Melbourne University award for excellence. The Inclusion Partnership Project, which resulted in publication of Sports for Everyone: A Guide to 360° Inclusion for Young People in Sport, is a partnership between the university and Hobsons Bay Community Fund. Eighteen students have worked over three years with Hobsons Bay and Wyndham councils, parents and representatives from more than 20 clubs to develop the guide to help empower people aged 12 to 18. The postgraduate social work students are based at the West Footscray office of Compton Green.

Newport’s future

Sarah Eicher, an international student from Michigan, said the inclusion guide – just one aspect of the three-year project – was improving lives. “The Sports for Everyone guide serves as a living document that draws from various theories of inclusion and offers actionable ways to enhance inclusive practices in sporting clubs,” she said. “The guide has acted as a catalyst for change by raising awareness of the importance of inclusion and sharing personal experiences.” The project won the University of Melbourne Award for Excellence in Engagement – Teaching. The guide is available online. Goya Dmytryshchak

Cyclist detour fear By Goya Dmytryshchak and Benjamin Millar Cyclists are describing as “dangerous” the alternative route implemented while a section of Federation Trail is closed for four years for the West Gate Tunnel project. Altona’s Jennifer Williams says the cycling detour along Millers and Blackshaws roads, while a two-kilometre stretch of the trail is closed for construction of new freeway lanes, is “horrendous”. “There are many, many trucks and the road is very busy – it’s not a great place for cyclists or people on foot,” she said. “They have diverted people down Millers Road and they have a cyclist dismount sign, which is a bit odd for a bike route. “The worst part is Blackshaws Road, because it has a huge number of trucks, no bike lane and it’s extremely busy with all sorts of traffic.” Ms Williams said she was also worried about children who used the route to go to school in Altona North. A state government spokesman said safety was the No.1 consideration for any detour route. “The Western Distributor Authority has carried out extensive planning work, looked at a number of options, consulted with the local council and Bicycle Victoria to ensure the detour being implemented is a safe option for cyclists and pedestrians,” he said. “When complete, the West Gate Tunnel project will deliver more than 14 kilometres of new and upgraded paths, making it safer and easier for more people to walk or cycle.”

Study, jobs lift for VU TAFE Victoria University TAFE students will be given a helping hand with their studies and job searches thanks to funding of almost $3 million. The state government announced a $2.9 million community service funding package on Tuesday that will assist VU with providing literacy and numeracy support, help with studies and extra assistance for people from culturally diverse backgrounds or living with disabilities. The funding will help VU provide more services to help students get ready for the workforce, including help with writing resumes and interview preparation. Footscray MP Marsha Thomson said the government had brought back funding cut by the previous government as part of its slashing of TAFE funding. “This is a fantastic boost for TAFE in Footscray – giving students the extra support they need to get a qualification and get a job,” Ms Thomson said. “The Liberals slashed this funding when they were in government – we’re rebuilding TAFE.” The funding follows an announcement earlier this year that the government is spending $172 million on offering free tuition in 30 priority TAFE courses and 18 pre-apprenticeship courses. Training and Skills Minister Gayle Tierney said the funds were aimed at giving all students the best chance of getting the training they needed. Benjamin Millar

Dogs sign up for mentoring plan By Benjamin Millar Western Bulldogs football stars will be mentoring young African-Australians as the club steps up its support of youth in the west. The mentoring program, developed by the Bulldogs’ Community Foundation, will match players including Jason Johannisen, Reuben William and Ellie Blackburn with African-Australian youth aged 14 to 18 to help them become role models for their peers. The program will be supported by a grant under an $8.6 million funding boost from the

state government in response to the 10-year African Communities Action Plan. The plan was developed by African communities in partnership with the government. The funding boost was announced in Footscray on Friday at the launch of the Western Bulldogs program. Western Bulldogs Community Foundation general manager Kashif Bouns said as well as matching young people with mentors, the program will also include a number of leadership workshops.

“It will allow us to take our work forward and help us create future role models that can inspire our next generations through our African mentoring program,” he said. “We are lucky to have role models like Jason Johannisen and Reuben William at our club who have already done some work in this area.” Mr Bouns said Blackburn would also be instrumental in developing the program, because of her experience with Ladder, an AFL-linked not-for-profit organisation helping young people break the cycle of homelessness. Multicultural affairs minister Robin Scott

said the $8.6 million funding would include $1.5 million to improve education through homework clubs and school-community liaison officers, $1 million to support more people into jobs and $500,000 to respond to drug and alcohol abuse. “Labor is supporting and empowering Victorians of African heritage, and are proud to work in partnership with communities to implement the action plan,” he said. “The … funding will go a long way to implementing many of the priorities of the action plan.”

Golden era of design The Williamstown Town Hall refurbishment has won gold in the Melbourne Design Awards. Eight years in the making, the restoration of the 1918 building by k20 Architecture, commissioned by Hobsons Bay council, won the interior architecture – public and institutional design category. The architect’s brief began with a roof replacement in one section, but the brief expanded after it became apparent the building was “falling apart”. Director of k20 Architecture, Theodore Kerlidis, said it was vital that the history was retained in the architecture. “What’s important for the community is giving it its next 100-year life cycle,” he said. “They now have a building that is appealing visually, has cultural identity, has sustainability at its core and is flexible in its usability.” Hobsons Bay mayor Angela Altair described the hall as the jewel in Williamstown’s crown.

“For generations, the Williamstown Town Hall has been at the heart of civic, social, cultural and community life here in Hobsons Bay,” she said. “In its early days, it was where sons, brothers and fathers enlisted, while today it is home to theatre productions, graduations, galas, opera, school concerts, weddings and festivals.” The refurbishment included the restoration of the interior’s ornate ceilings, timber panelling, original floor and wall tiling, and upgrading in line with accessibility requirements. The timber structure and floorboards were replaced in the grand hall, with recycled wood chosen to match the fibre density of the original planks. When the 1970s carpet was pulled up, the architects discovered the original patterned vinyl flooring beneath and this design was incorporated into the new carpet. Goya Dmytryshchak

Council backs tennis expansion By Goya Dmytryshchak A draft master plan to be prepared for Dennis Reserve in Williamstown will be based on the inclusion of four tennis courts. The future use of the reserve has been a contentious issue since a decommissioned bowling green became available six years ago. As reported by Star Weekly Weekly, the council last month endorsed a tennis needs report that identified the construction of two new courts at Williamstown Central Tennis Club (Dennis Reserve) as a short-term priority.

Members of the Dennis Reserve Master Planning group, convened by the council, have expressed varying opinions on the potential use of the site. While seven members support the addition of two new courts, four members are in favour of conversion of the bowling green to open space. Hobsons Bay councillors last week voted 5-2 to endorse a concept plan for additional tennis courts, which will form the basis for a more detailed plan. Cr Peter Hemphill told last week’s council meeting that the council had gone through

an “exhaustive process” to come up with a plan including four courts, which is known as “Option 4”. “I think one of the misnomers that’s been floated around is that if we go with what’s being proposed here, Option 4, is that there would be a loss of open space,” he said. “Really, there is no loss of open space because that space has always been a sports facility for close on 100 years. It was used for the ladies bowls for nearly a century until they unfortunately folded, and it’s still fenced off and it hasn’t been used for open space.”

Cr Jonathon Marsden and Cr Tony Briffa voted against the plan for additional courts at Dennis Reserve. “This site is contested, every square metre,” Cr Marsden said. “Every encroachment on open space by the tennis club is a loss of open space for the community and there is a lack of open space in central and north Williamstown. It is an open space desert.” When the draft master plan is completed, it will be placed on public exhibition for comment.

The ‘inside’ story

Williamstown resident and former federal MP Richard Evans has written the first book in a political thriller trilogy that has been dubbed Australia’s House of Cards. Born and raised in Williamstown, Evans moved to Western Australia to play football – and stayed there 25 years. He served as the Liberal member for the seat of Cowan from 1993-1998, before eventually returning home to Williamstown. His first book in The Democracy Trilogy, titled Deceit, will be launched on Friday at Pelicans Landing.

The book starts with a plane crash that leads corrupt prime minister Andrew Gerrard to rush through legislation designed to line his retirement bin. Evans says his experience in Parliament gave him insight in to its operations and “many of the strange folks that come there”. “I was there when Paul Keating was prime minister and I sat behind John Howard when he was prime minister, so I’ve got a fairly good understanding of the Parliament,” he said. “When I got involved with writing, which is a calling I guess, what they always tell you to do is write what you know.” Evans specialises in depicting quirky

characters, of which he says there is no shortage in Parliament. “If you look at the Senate for instance, it’s full of quirky people,” he said. “You’ve got Hinch, Sarah Hanson-Young, the One Nation guys … Jacqui Lambi, Ricky Muir and the Family First were in there, so it’s a whole bunch of quirky people. “When I was there, they weren’t all cut-outs; they were all different people there to make a difference. “There’s a lot of history and a lot of interesting things that happened in politics and I draw upon some of that, and some of it I just read the current newspaper.”

Footscray residents are calling on Maribyrnong council to reconsider its use of weed killers in locations popular with children and young people. Emma Law has started a petition targeting the council’s use of glyphosate, a key ingredient in popular herbicide Roundup. She said her existing worries about the spraying of the weed killer were compounded when she witnessed council workers spraying Roundup at Quarry Park in recent high winds. Ms Law said the workers were not wearing adequate protective gear and were spraying with large hoses rather than smaller wands. “They were not putting any signs up about the spraying,” she said. “About an hour after they sprayed, kids from Footscray City College have gone out and sat right where they had been spraying.” Her petition quickly attracted more than 150 signatures. Maribyrnong council infrastructure services acting director Craig Medcalf said the council used the spray as part of its maintenance program in accordance with Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority recommendations on control measures in the application of the spray. “Concerns raised by the resident are being looked into, and if approved work processes have not been followed, this will be addressed,” he said.

Prison for Yarraville taxi robbery By Benjamin Millar A man has been sentenced to four years in jail after pleading guilty to his role in robbing a taxi driver in Yarraville. Asad Nur must serve at least two and a half years in prison for the 2017 incident, which occurred after he had been awake for three days on a methylamphetamine binge. The County Court of Victoria heard the taxi was called to Kent Street on the morning

of June 27. Nur and his alleged accomplice entered the taxi and travelled a short distance before Nur told the driver to pull over because he had forgotten something back at his house. When the driver stopped, the co-accused produced a large knife and demanded that the taxi driver hand over all of his belongings. Nur threatened the driver with a bottle opener, forcing him to hand over his wallet, mobile phone and house key.

The pair fled along Kent Street before turning into Stephen Street to a waiting car. Nur was arrested a week later, telling police the robbery was his co-accused’s plan and he thought the knife was fake. The court heard the driver lost his job as a result of the armed robbery because he could no longer concentrate on his job. He was left scared and had difficulty sleeping after the incident. In sentencing Nur, Judge Christopher Ryan

said his offending was committed on a soft target. “Armed robberies committed on soft targets in our community are all too prevalent,” he said. “There have been serious consequences to your victim as a result of your conduct. “By this sentence I must punish you, publicly denounce your conduct and deter you and others from committing this kind of crime.” Nur has served 249 days of pre-sentence detention.

Fresh look at Footscray Footscray’s iconic markets are the character-filled backdrop to a fresh new TV series. FRESH!, a ‘dramedy’ by Maribyrnong writer and producer Nikki Tran, is set amid the hubbub of the colourful fresh food market. The series features several familiar Footscray faces, including a cameo from Tony Cavallaro, the west’s very own “Mr Cannoli”. Filmed over recent months, FRESH! will premiere at the ‘Series Mania Festival of TV’ at ACMI this Friday, before launching online next Wednesday. Tran said Footscray Market provides fertile ground for filming the series, offering a diverse microcosm of larger society. Her upbringing involved countless trips to the market with her mother and grandmother. Tran took pains to ensure the cast and crew working on the production truly reflected the community she was trying to capture. Tran was a 2016 finalist in the BlueCat Screenplay Competition for her short film

screenplay When We Run. A member of Footscray Community Arts Centre’s West Writers group, her theatre show Sidekicked was awarded Best Words and Ideas Show at the 2017 Melbourne Fringe festival. Tran said FRESH! is an attempt to capture a slice of Footscray life under threat from the march of gentrification into the traditionally working class and multicultural suburb. Each short episode focuses on a different character, from a Chinese butcher and Iraqi-Egyptian couple starting up a Middle Eastern eatery to a sharp businesswoman from Korea and ageing nonna running a deli. Tran said she would now love to take the characters and spin the show out into a full series for television. Tickets to the premiere screening are booked out, but all episodes will be released online on July 25. Details: facebook.com/freshwebseries

Trust bid to save Masonic Hall By Goya Dmytryshchak The National Trust has lodged an objection to the proposed demolition of Newport Masonic Hall and construction of a five storey development. Trethowan Architecture has applied to Hobsons Bay council to replace the 1924-1925 neo-Grecian style building at the corner of Mason Street and Melbourne Road with a 22-dwelling apartment block including six shops at ground level.

The application states the former Freemasons Hall is suffering from severe effects of concrete cancer. The Trust’s advocacy manager Felicity Watson said the current application for demolition was similar to a previous application which was refused by the council and subsequently by the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal in 2013. “The National Trust has concerns that the condition of the current building is a case of ‘demolition by neglect’, and that no works have

been undertaken to stabilise and maintain the building following the refusal of the earlier permit application for the site,” her objection states. “We note the conclusion of Beauchamp Hogg Spano in the Structural Condition Assessment dated June 2016, which states ‘the building has received very little maintenance over the years, which is a primary contributor to the deterioration’.” The objection states that while significant structural issues had been identified, the

building could be reconstructed. “We would expect that for a place identified as having both individual heritage significance, and contributory significance to a heritage precinct, that all possible options for restoration or reconstruction should be explored and documented in any application for a development on the site,” Ms Watson stated. “The application provides no evidence that options for the retention of the building have been meaningfully investigated, or that restoration and reconstruction are not viable.”

Reaching out Student and beauty pageant veteran Acholly Arow is on a mission to make the world a better place. The Victoria University student, 24, has her sights on improving gender equality, particularly across diverse communities. Ms Arow moved from South Sudan to Australia with her family at the age of eight. She became involved in beauty pageants in her teens as a way to build her confidence, finding a platform to talk about issues she feels to be important. The political science student is now looking for further avenues to help tackle violence against women. “I’m a very shy person, so to get experience and to learn to talk to people I started getting involved in uni life and joining clubs,” she said. “Last year there was a program with [settlement agency] AMES Australia through VU concentrating on the prevention of violence against women. It changed my life. “I’m more aware of violence against women,

the types of violence women go through, so I decided I want to work more with the cultural community and the broader community to bring awareness.” Ms Arow said shortly afterwards she experienced violence first-hand, helping her understand why it’s hard for victims to come forward. She followed this with her first visit back to South Sudan since childhood. “They have a higher rate of domestic and gender-based violence, for me to see that first-hand was an eye-opener for sure,” she said. On her return to Australia she began planning a women’s empowerment seminar, held over the weekend in Footscray. “Three to five years ago men were afraid to say a word around this, but each year and each day that goes … men are not so afraid to be in a room and actually have this discussion,” she said. MY PLACE Yarraville actor Steph Evison Williams is bound for Hollywood, but not before filming another series of her Netflix hit and a few more rambles around the park with her dog Brando. She speaks with Benjamin Millar. My now husband and I moved here three years ago. We often say we wish we had moved here sooner. I feel a great sense of community living in the west. Everything is at our fingertips. I also work locally for a production studio called Kenny Productions; we are in Kindred Studios, which is a fantastic creative hub. What do you love most about the area? Community. I know my neighbours! The Sun Theatre, great coffee and food, lots of dogs, babies and great parks. Do you have a favourite local place or places to spend time? I love taking my dog, Brando, to the Yarraville Gardens and Cruickshank Park. I know nearly all the dogs in the areas by name (and the owners by face). There is a great new café that just opened by the Yarraville station called Coracle, they are my new favourite place for coffee. I also think we have the best Indian restaurant in Melbourne, Tandoor Times. How did you get into acting? I think it started as it does for many overly creative (and loud) kids, with my parents putting me into acting, singing and dance classes. I was always a kinesthetic learner. The moment I realised that perhaps I could pursue this as a career was opening night of my high school production of Cabaret. I was

playing Sally Bowles and I remember being side stage and thinking, “I never want to stop doing this, what if you could get paid to do this?” What can you tell us about your Netflix series Rostered On? It’s a comedy show based around the day-to-day struggles of working in retail, dealing with crazy customers, management, and the corporate machine. However, it’s also about the ever-delicate balance of working for a paycheck, whilst still pursuing creative dreams. My role, Sara, is the lead character’s wife; she is strong, supportive, fearless, level-headed and realistic. She simply wants the best for the people she loves. The show started as a web series on YouTube, but gained such a huge following that it’s now on Netflix around the world. Season 2 is set to begin shooting in November, with funding support from Screen Australia. It’s been a fantastic ride, which none of us saw coming; from a small independent web series with no budget or funding, to being on Netflix, it is totally unheard of. You are off to Hollywood after shooting the next series, what are your hopes there? To put myself in a position where I can be available for all the amazing opportunities that the city can provide. The amount of content that is made in the US is still far greater than in Australia. It is scary and daunting, but I am looking at it as a fantastic adventure, living in a new country and meeting new people. It is very exciting.

Just last weekend, I graduated to a caramel and apple sponge pudding. When I see the words ‘caramel’ and ‘apple’ in the same sentence, my mind harks back to the days of school fetes and toffee apples. Like lamb and rosemary, caramel and apple is a match made in heaven. And as the weather’s been so bitterly cold lately, you can understand why the words ‘hot,’ ‘sponge’ and ‘pudding’ also grabbed my attention! Thanks to Foodiful for this recipe. My family and I can attest that it’s the ultimate comfort food and the perfect company for cold nights in front of the TV.

Preheat oven to 180 degrees celcius and grease a 25cm-wide baking dish. Peel and thinly slice 4 Granny Smith apples (I cut them into quarters first) and place in the bottom of the dish. Place 1 and 2/3 cups of self raising flour, 1 cup of caster sugar, 1 tsp vanilla extract, 200mls milk, 150g melted butter and 2 eggs into the bowl of an electric mixer. Mix on low speed for 30 seconds. Increase speed to medium and mix for about 2 minutes or until the mixture is pale. Meanwhile, place 1 cup water, ½ cup of golden syrup and 1 cup brown sugar into a small saucepan. Stir over a low heat until sugar has dissolved. Turn up heat a little and let the mixture come to the boil. Cook for a further 2 minutes. Pour batter over the sliced apples. Pour about half of the sugar syrup over the top. Bake for 45 minutes or until the top is golden brown and the sponge is almost cooked through when tested with a skewer. Pour remaining syrup over the top and allow to sit for 5 minutes before serving with ice cream or custard. NEWPORT 278 Melbourne Road, 3015 Williams Real Estate: 9397 2000

Price: $1.3 million – $1.4 million

Romance is born again within this classic Tudor-style property. Walk home from Newport train station, a five-minute stroll, past cafes, the supermarket and a multitude of other specialty and convenience stores to a gorgeous property with fantastic living zones, both inside and out. This circa-1930s house is a picture of timeless style with multi-paned windows, soaring ornate ceilings and beautifully proportioned rooms. The lounge room evokes the entertaining style and sophistication of another age. Details such as timber panelling and

Auction: July 28 at 11.30am

ornate light fittings help create a more formal feel. Internal timber sliding doors open to the generous formal dining space (with a gorgeous fireplace), so parties can easily flow into the lounge area after dinner is done. A second fireplace (with a brick and timber surround) in the lounge room and hardwood floors add more appeal. Plantation shutters have been added, softening the space. Two of the three bedrooms have period-style built-in robes, while all bedrooms have hardwood floors and lovely

filtered light through period windows. High ceilings and timber picture rails are par for this course. The kitchen and meals area has had a thorough renovation. Country-modern white cabinetry is set against exposed timber benchtops. Stainless-steel appliances, great light and hardwood floors blend seamlessly into the house’s classy and distinctive features from an earlier period. Twin sash windows above the porcelain sink look out to the deep, central deck with a feature weeping mulberry tree that further adds to the romantic feel.

The land is square and generous, so an extension is entirely feasible. The fantastic dimensions of the block allow for a lawn and cubby house past the deck, along with off-street parking for multiple cars. A rare architectural offering for the area, this is a residence ideal for those who love to entertain. But let’s not forget the place is also well set up for the day-to-day living routines of a young family. Samantha Freestone 17 MARIBYRNONG & HOBSONS BAY STAR WEEKLY \ JULY 18, 2018

SPORT Magic casts a spell over North Geelong Who can stop Altona Magic from coasting to the National Premier League 2 west title? The Magic has opened up a massive eight-point gulf at the top of the ladder. The Goran Lozanovski-coached Magic made it seven wins from their past eight matches in a 3-1 victory over North Geelong Warriors at Paisley Park on Saturday night. Ben Litfin put Altona ahead in the seventh minute with his sixth goal of the campaign. Daniel Kuczynski doubled the Magic’s advantage in the 31st minute. Kuczynski is in white-hot scoring form having fired in a hat-trick the week earlier. Darius Madison breathed life into the contest for North Geelong, scoring six minutes before half-time. But Altona’s two-goal lead was restored in the second half through Jon McShane for his 13th of the season. In the state leagues, Altona City is peaking at the right time of the men’s state league 1 season with a third win in four matches. Adamson

Ajayi, Callum Byrne and Zac Thompson scored for City in a 3-1 win over Western Suburbs. Altona East Phoenix went down 3-2 to Corio in men’s state league 2. Williamstown was pipped 1-0 away to Moreland United in men’s state league 3. Altona North held men’s state league 4 leaders Western Eagles in a nil-all-draw. Laverton’s promotion chances suffered a blow with a 1-0 loss to North Melbourne Athletic. Melbourne Lions and Maribyrnong Greens had a day to forget in men’s state league 5. The Lions were crushed 7-0 by Gisborne, while the Greens lost 4-1 to Moonee Valley Knights. In women’s state league 3, Altona Magic had a 6-0 victory over Gisborne. Altona City went down 7-1 to runaway ladder-leader Hume City, while Maribyrnong Swifts lost 5-0 to Melbourne University. Lance Jenkinson

don’t pretend to be an expert when it comes to watching a footballer and being able to say with certainty he will or won’t make it. There are too many variables, and after talking to various recruiters over the years, there are many I don’t understand. All I will say is, if Sam Collins did not play his way back onto an AFL list last Saturday with his performance for Werribee against Essendon, I will never speak about any player’s ability again. He was so outstanding it was ridiculous. It was one of the most complete games you could ever witness from a key defender. Marks, spoils, tackles, smothers, hitting targets – he did it all. If he had run up the grandstand stairs and topped up the supporters’ beers, it would not have been the least bit surprising. While I still can talk about players’ ability, I hope the recruiters are looking at Josh Porter and Keegan Bray because they both have the X factor.

■ Bernie

Moynahan is not a household name in sport in the west yet his passing last week in Russia will be felt by many. Bernie played cricket at Hoppers Crossing Cricket Club and made the club the centre of his universe. Not surprisingly, he was a Life Member. He was also a Hall of Fame inductee at the Hoppers Crossing Sports Club. Bernie was on committees, and even when he wasn’t, was one of the people who worked tirelessly for the club. He enjoyed life and travelled the world watching sport. Bernie’s life ended in Russia on a trip to watch the Socceroos. He developed pneumonia and complications set in, which resulted in his death. A sad way for his life to end, especially for his family, who were helpless as events took place. Condolences to his family and many friends in sport in the west.

Glory pulls out a classic By Lance Jenkinson Yarraville Glory has further enhanced its Football Federation Victoria men’s state league 1 survival bid in a victory that coach Paul Donnelly described as a “classic six-pointer”. The Glory not only obtained three vital points in a 2-0 win on the road over Hoppers Crossing at Grange Reserve, but ensured the hosts did not get a share of the points, which leaves them deeper in the relegation zone. “It was a huge result for us,” Donnelly said. “We spoke about it all week, how important it was. “It was about us drawing clear of them and them getting stuck at the bottom.” Yarraville has been in red-hot form of late. In the past month, Glory picked up four wins out of five. It is a huge monumental shift considering the Glory only had one victory after 10 rounds. Having pulled off an upset against high-flying 40 MARIBYRNONG & HOBSONS BAY STAR WEEKLY \ JULY 18, 2018

North Sunshine a week earlier, there were concerns about the Hoppers Crossing game. However, forced personnel changes ensured there would be no players resting on their laurels. “It kind of worked in our favour a bit because we had two players out with yellow card accumulation and some injuries,” Donnelly said. “With seven players out, everyone was fighting for their spot at training because they knew a few places were up for grabs. “They took that fight into the game, so it didn’t seem like there was any changes, they just got on with it and it was very positive.” Diego Ortiz broke the deadlock for Yarraville just before half-time. Ortiz only had to poke the ball home after a defensive error. “It was a bit fortunate,” Donnelly said. “It was a corner that came in and their keeper slipped up and Diego was Johnny-on-the-spot. “It was a bit scrappy, but it lifted everyone.” With Hoppers Crossing pushing numbers

forward for an equaliser in the second half, Yarraville took full advantage with a number of counter attacking moves. One of those moves yielded a goal from a Musa Kamara breakaway, who found Darcey Den Ouden in the box to finish off the move. Kamara has been an important acquisition for the Glory since Keith Burch went down with a season-ending knee injury. “We put him on the bench last week and he came on when Keith got injured and did really well, so he got the start this week and did well again,” Donnelly said. Yarraville’s win was underpinned by its dominance in the midfield. Anthony Themistokleous worked hard to snuff out any Hoppers Crossing forays, while Mariano Chain was a constant threat in attack. Yarraville is five points clear of the relegation zone and eight points off second place, so there is a whole host of possibilities ahead of a date with Keilor Park on Saturday.

done to the Wyndhamvale Football Club on its first senior win of the 2018 WRFL season last weekend against Albion. The Falcons have been doing it hard and after 11 losses must have wondered whether a win was possible. Being the only senior team not to have a win in the three divisions is not a sought-after title and they have avoided that stigma. Can they avoid relegation? The next two games, away to St Albans and home to Caroline Springs, will decide their fate. Similar story for last year’s grand finalists Sunshine … if they are to make the finals, they need to step up in the next two weeks or it is an early finish for the Kangaroos.

City West Falcons face a tough run home City West Falcons have moved into the Victorian Netball League championship division top four, but the hard work is just beginning. With a tough draw in the run home, the Falcons know that any wrong move could see them miss finals. On Wednesday night, the Falcons produced a strong four quarter performance in a 71-38 win against the Ariels. Falcons coach Marg Lind said it was a strong all round performance and they made sure they kept their foot down all game. “We played well,” she said. “We got off to a blinder of a start. They reshuffled after the first half and got better, but we were still on top. “We’ve still got some things to iron out

though.” The win coincided with the Falcons having their four Australian Netball League players all back on the court together. Jane Cook enjoyed her return to the side, shooting 59 goals from 66 attempts. Lind said the connection of Cook and wing attack Maggie Lind was really strong. “Jane is a great post up player. “She had a bit of fun. She’s got some good friends in the team and she just relaxed.” Lind was full of praise for Cook’s shooting partner Tahnysha Salanoa, whose confidence is growing. The umpires gave Zoe Davies best on court, while Anger Akec was given the two votes. The win moves the Falcons into the top four

and just four points off second place, but they have a tough draw ahead of them. They face three of the top five sides in the run home. “We’re mindful that we might have to go undefeated to make the top four,” Lind said. “The other teams in the top five have an easier run. “We’ll give it a go, we have nothing to lose.” It’s the same mentality for the Falcons division 1 and under-19 sides, which both sit fifth after good wins against the Ariels too. Lind said having a full championship division team would help the other two teams. Uneeq Palavi stepped back into division 1 on Wednesday night and shot 51 goals from 54 attempts.

Madelyn Gray and Imogen Sexton both played under-19s, with Gray named best on court. Lind said it makes a big difference having those players able to step back. The Falcons this week face Melbourne University. The last time the two teams met, it was one of the championship division side’s worst matches. Lind said it was a really big game for them. “They are really experienced,” she said. “Last time we played them, it was like rabbits in headlights. “[Now] We’ve got that enthusiasm and confidence that we’ve built the last few weeks.”

Eagles set a steady path By Lance Jenkinson Top-of-the-ladder Yarraville-Seddon will not let outside noise distract it from its game-at-a-time approach in the Western Region Football League division 2. The Eagles are finals bound, more than likely will take pole position into September and most are tipping them to go all the way. However, Eagles coach Vinnie Turcinovich is not looking beyond this Saturday’s trip to Albanvale. “I’ve been in footy for long enough to know not to take anything for granted,” he said. “We haven’t spoken about finals in house, outer house they’ve spoken about it. “It’s still early days and things can turn around pretty quickly.” What cannot be denied is Yarraville-Seddon’s commitment and desire to succeed. The Eagles flexed their muscle again on Saturday in a 62-point win over Newport Power at Yarraville Oval. It was another ruthless performance from a side that no team wants to stare down in such form. Turcinovich took over an Eagles side that went down in last year’s grand final, but with a revamped line-up featuring younger and even hungrier players there has been no hangover from last season. It has been all systems go from day one of pre-season, with Turcinovich coming in with no preconceived ideas about the make up of his best team and giving spots to players who perform on the track, and they’ve responded well. “Nothing is too hard for this group,” he said. “They are like ‘gimme, gimme, gimme’ and they’ll take it on. “That’s the mentality of the boys.” Turcinovich is impressed with the togetherness of the team. He rates the bond between the players as the key ingredient to being undefeated. “It’s a really close group and the confidence between themselves is huge,” Turcinovich said. “There’s also a belief in our game plan and every week I’ll chuck in something new to test the boys out.” Another important aspect for Yarraville-Seddon is its versatility across the board. One-position players are largely on the outer for players who can contribute in multiple areas of the ground. It’s why the Eagles have seven players who have kicked 10-plus goals. “I’ve said to the boys, if you play one spot, you may be in the side, if you play two, you’re going to get considered, if you play three different positions, you’re going to get picked,” Turcinovich said. Corey Salvador is the poster boy of the new Yarraville-Seddon. Salvador was stuck in the reserves last season, but has kicked a league-leading 46 goals in 11 matches this season. “When I first had a look at the squad, we’ve got a lot of young kids coming through,

Woodsmen left lagging

but there were players like Corey and more than a handful of others who were very good development players,” Turcinovich said. “Giving them tools to be better players, anything can happen and that’s why I didn’t go recruiting because I thought we had the players there in the development squad – I call the reserves the development squad – to step up.

“A lot of coaches don’t spend time on that, but if you’ve got your own junior players coming through, if you can improve them, you’re going to go a long way and all of a sudden you’ve got new recruits who would otherwise have played in the reserves. “With the tools and his belief, anything can happen.”

Spotswood suffered a heavy 62-point loss to reigning premiers Deer Park in the Western Region Football League division 1 at John McLeod Oval on Saturday. The Woodsmen were on the back foot from the outset, trailing by 13 points at quarter-time and the margin blew out. As a result, the Woodsmen have tumbled to fifth on the ladder. The Woodsmen face a must-win game against Hoppers Crossing on Saturday to stay in touch with the sides battling it out for the finals double chance. Altona regained its form over the past two weeks. The Vikings backed up with a 28-point win over last year’s runners-up Sunshine at Grant Reserve on Saturday. Patrick Rose, who was in hospital with tonsillitis a week ago, showed no ill effects as he kicked seven goals, taking his season tally to a league-best 54. Altona, sitting third, will travel to Albion on Saturday. In division 2, Parkside had a 12-point win over West Footscray in a cracking encounter at Henry Turner Reserve. Four goals to Jesse Fortune and three to Brent Kelly were crucial for the Parksiders in a low scoring game. At the other end, Darcy McCallum kicked six of West Footscray’s 10 goals for the day. Newport Power’s finals’ hopes took a hit with a 62-point defeat to Yarraville-Seddon and North Footscray had a second consecutive loss, going down by two points to Point Cook. In division 3, Braybrook was led by eight goals from Paul Cutajar-Milosev in a 49-point win over Glen Orden. Laverton was no match for the undefeated Wyndham Suns, going down by 68 points. Young skipper leads by example When it came to the big moments for Vic Metro at the AFL under-18 national championships, it was invariably Xavier O’Halloran who stood up and pointed the way. Whenever the Western Jets have needed an impact at a crucial stage of a game it is often O’Halloran answering the call. It’s what the 18-year-old from Altona does and it’s the reason why he was trusted with the Western Jets captaincy at the start of the TAC Cup season and then evolved into Vic Metro skipper by mid season. “I’ve embraced it since day one and loved every minute of it,” O’Halloran said of the captaincy duties. “It’s about paving the way for your teammates 100 per cent of the time. “If you’re getting the majority of them to follow the example you set, you’re doing the right job.” O’Halloran, a powerful midfielder out of St Bernard’s College, has excelled as captain from day one. Jets coach Torin Baker has described him as a “strong leader” and reiterates that almost on a weekly basis.

Firstly, O’Halloran is a stand-up citizen, no job is too small for him behind the scenes. “It’s just the little things that are important as captain,” he said. “Whether that be picking up a drink bottle at training that someone might’ve left on the ground or sweeping the rooms after the game. “It’s also showing support for your teammates on and off the field.” It’s the little things that translate into O’Halloran’s game on the field too. Sure, the AFL recruiters will remember his huge pack mark and calm set shot goal from 50-metres out at a crucial point in the game against Vic Country. They will have the markings in their note pads to remind them of his big third quarter to get his team back in the match against South Australia. It’s the things that might go unnoticed observing from the grandstands that O’Halloran likes to pride himself on and endears him to his teammates. “I just try and go week-in, week-out and just give four quarters of consistent effort,” he said.

O’Halloran, who got his start in Auskick at Altona Juniors, was surprised when he got the nod to lead the Big V, but he should not have been, considering his body of work. “When I heard the news I was actually quite shocked,” he said. “I didn’t expect to get that role, but I was certainly stoked … and extremely honoured to lead such a group of boys in an elite program.” His next mission is to lead the Jets “deep into the finals”, while concentrating on maximising his grades in year 12 at St Bernard’s. O’Halloran is the July nominee for the Don Deeble Rising Star award. The award, hosted by the Sunshine Western Region Sports Club and Star Weekly Weekly, recognises young athletes from the western suburbs who have achieved outstanding results at state and/ or national levels. O’Halloran will receive $1000, donated by the Yarraville Club Cricket Club, and other prizes to assist him in achieving his sports goal. Lance Jenkinson

Footscray paid a heavy price for a rare loss in the Hockey Victoria women’s Premier League. The Dogs were dislodged from top spot after losing to Hawthorn 4-0 in the top-of-the-ladder clash at Hawthorn-Malvern Hockey Centre on Saturday. Altona went down 2-1 to Greensborough, leaving it too close to the relegation zone for comfort. In men’s Premier League, Footscray had a sensational 3-2 win over Hawthorn to keep its finals’ hopes alive. Liam Braithwaite shot three goals. Altona remains clear in fourth place, following a 4-4 draw with Greensborough. Harry Gill fired in two goals for the Seagulls and Andrew Scanlon and Harry Dolenc also found the back of the net.

Bulldogs welcome win

Williamstown had a 39-point win over Northern Blues in the Victorian Football League at Ikon Park on Saturday. The Seagulls burst out to a six-goal-to-one quarter-time lead and were never headed. Michael Gibbons racked up 37 disposals and eight tackles in a best-on-ground showing, while Nick Rodda bobbed up for five goals. Footscray, meanwhile, faded out in the second half of a 16-point loss to Casey Demons at Casey Fields on Sunday. Fergus Greene kicked four goals. In the VAFA Premier C, it’s Williamstown CYMS and then daylight. The CYs had a 101-point win over St Mary’s Salesian. Nick Ebinger snared seven goals.

It has been a long and arduous road, but Footscray is finally in the winners’ circle after 12 rounds of the Rugby Victoria Dewar Shield. The Bulldogs certainly did it the hard way, coming from nine points down at half-time to beat Endeavour Hills 43-28 at Henry Turner South Reserve. It leaves Endeavour Hills rock bottom and the only winless team in the competition. The Bulldogs and Endeavour Hills played out a draw in their first meeting earlier in the season. Bulldogs fly half Martin Naufahu admitted that it was “good just to get a win”. “It took a long time,” he said. “We didn’t want to go throughout the whole year without getting a win, so it was good to get one. “For both of our teams, it was a game to see who could fight to stay on top of each other and avoid that wooden spoon. “We didn’t want to end up on the bottom, so it was win-win for us.” 42 MARIBYRNONG & HOBSONS BAY STAR WEEKLY \ JULY 18, 2018

Footscray played a little too conservatively in the first half and struggled to penetrate. Staring a 21-12 deficit in the face at half-time, the message from coach Tia Suemai was to be more bold and expansive with their attack. The Bulldogs stuck to the call and produced a magnificent second half, piling on 31 points. “We started to spread the ball out wide and looked better,” Naufahu said. “We actually used the ball instead of trying to go through them because they’re bigger players. “It made them work a lot more by getting the ball out wide to our fast wingers.” Leading the way for Footscray was young gun Ajay Ameto who bravely attacked the line and was handsomely rewarded with two tries. “He showed the rest of us how to play rugby with a lot of confidence,” Naufahu said. “For me, he was our MVP on the day. “He’s got a big future.” Flanker Faimata Nimarota made some good carries to have Footscray on the front foot. Lock Sau Ofahengaue was often involved in plays leading up to Bulldogs’ tries.

If you think Footscray is satisfied with a single win, think again. The Bulldogs will be approaching their final two matches of the season against finals hopeful Power House away on Saturday and top-of-the-ladder Melbourne in the final round as games they can win. “We can’t make the top four or anything like that, but we still want to finish off on a good note,” Naufahu said. “It’s a good test against two really good teams and if we can play well and finish off the year with two more wins then it will be good for us to build towards next year.” Naufahu was confident the disastrous 2018 season was an aberration. He said there was a bright future for the Bulldogs’ top side and is impressed with the talent coming through. “We’re building a new core group that will stay around and hold the team together,” Naufahu said. “We’ve also got some good junior teams coming through, so our club is pretty set, our future is looking good.”

Altona picked up its third win of the Lacrosse Victoria men’s state league season. The Vikings won a thriller 11-10 over Camberwell at P.J. Lynch Reserve on Saturday. Trailing by a goal at three-quarter time, the Vikings scored five goals to three in the fourth quarter for a come-from-behind win. Lachlan McKinnon scored four goals. Third-placed Footscray had a nail-biting 12-11 loss to Brunswick. In women’s premier division, Williamstown annihilated Footscray Green 26-1. Abbey O’Mahony (six goals), Audrey Fithall and Ruby Mae Barnes (five each) were the Towners sharpshooters.
