Ashley’s brave battle By Benjamin Millar Confined to a wheelchair and with a brain tumour he had been told was inoperable, Ashley Masocha refused to lose hope. The Kingsville student, originally hailing from Zimbabwe, had arrived in Melbourne in 2013 in fine health and ready to enjoy the bright new chapter in his life. After a happy start at Victoria University, his health problems began in 2014 when he was 20. “It didn’t happen all at once,” he said. “It took a long time to realise what was going on.” An avid tennis player, Ashley first began to feel pain in his knees while on court. Then came headaches, fatigue and weight loss. A series of tests offered no clues – until he was sent for a brain scan.

“The doctor said, ‘We’ve found something in your brain,” he said. “I was pretty scared – I cried, then I called my brother to tell him.” His brother took him to the Royal Melbourne Hospital, where he was admitted for further scans. “They came back and told me I had a pilocytic astrocytoma – a tumour located at the top of my spine, right under my brain stem,” he said. The tumour was deemed inoperable. After eight hours of brain surgery to take a biopsy, he had his first course of chemotherapy, which failed to help. Ashley was collecting brain fluid at the back of his head, forcing a second round of brain surgery. Another course of chemo also failed, at which point his parents made a mercy dash from Zimbabwe.

His condition deteriorated and a cyst was discovered, triggering a third round of brain surgery. By the start of 2016, despite a third course of chemo, Ashley’s health was going dramatically downhill. “My oncologist said the medical team had run out of options and couldn’t help me anymore,” he said “I thought maybe this is fate, this is just what will happen to me.” His father refused to concede the fight and made contact with a St Vincent’s Hospital surgeon, who said he thought he could help. “Initially, we were a bit sceptical, but I went to see him and he said, ‘I think I can remove your tumour’,” Ashley said. “I thought this is my make or break situation, so on April 17, 2016, that’s when I had my fourth brain surgery which lasted at least nine hours. surprise and everyone’s surprise, my tumour was removed. That was the best feeling in the world.” Throughout much of the ordeal, Ashley continued to study, which he credits with helping him through. “I wanted to keep my mind focused on other things and to give me a purpose,” he said. After studying online, he began to feel better and wanted to return to classes. He wasn’t strong enough, so his mother Patricia would push him to classes in a wheelchair. Ashley is out of his wheelchair, a healthy weight and on track to finish his bachelor of information technology degree. He has been offered a graduate internship with Telstra and is hoping to be back on the tennis court soon.

Costs cripple Yarraville bakery By Benjamin Millar A Yarraville bakery-cafe owner says he had no choice but to liquidate the company behind the business after racking up a $1 million debt. Matthew Forbes – former pastry chef at Shannon Bennet’s Vue de Monde – opened Cobb Lane cafe on Anderson Street in Yarraville in 2013. But heavy debts, driven by high costs, sent the business to the wall in May. Company documents show Matthew Forbes Pty Ltd was voluntarily liquidated on
May 7 with liabilities outstripping assets by about $776,000, two days before Mr Forbes announced the cafe’s sudden closure. About 35 workers were left with $160,000 in unpaid entitlements, along with a further $70,000 in superannuation. More than $60,000 is owed to suppliers and more than $150,000 to the tax office. The bulk of the debt, more than $600,000, is owed to Mr Forbes and his wife. “We had to go into liquidation because of the debts we had accrued. The shop was haemorrhaging a lot of money each week.”
government’s Fair Entitlements Guarantee for workers left in the lurch by business collapses. Unsecured suppliers have little prospect of seeing their money, including almost $5000 owed to a Yarraville cleaning company. Liquidator Bilal Haider of Hamilton Murphy said more work was needed to determine if payments would be made to unsecured creditors. “Our investigations in relation to insolvent trading are continuing and at this stage we have not formed an opinion regarding same.”
A week after the liquidation, Mr Forbes started a new company called Dale & Moors Pty Ltd. It has taken on 13 of the former staff after buying out the assets needed to continue the wholesale arm of the business. Mr Forbes said staff costs had been one of the biggest business expenses and there was nothing he could do to stop the remaining 20 or so workers losing their jobs. He said they are being assisted to recover their unpaid entitlements – running as high as $11,000 in one case – via the federal
Charge stations on the way

Electric vehicle charging stations will soon be installed in Hobsons Bay. The council will also trial electric cars as part of its fleet, mayor Angela Altair said. “EVs are a small but growing part of the vehicle market,” she said. “It is expected that there will be as many as 10 million EVs in Australia by 2037.” Cr Jonathon Marsden said the council would work with the community and businesses to identify possible charging sites. “The trial will consider EVCS as part of council’s Energy$mart program that provides subsidies to businesses for solar and lighting upgrades,” he said. He said Smart Poles – multifunctional poles providing technology like WiFi, lighting and cameras – could become charging stations. Williamstown’s Jeff Challis, whose Yarraville business has an EVCS, said he liked to think of it as a modern version of free WiFi. “Ideally, if Hobsons Bay City Council works with other councils around the bay and co-ordinated a network around the bay, then that would be fantastic,” he said. “One good position would be somewhere like Williamstown – Nelsons Place – or Altona near the beach, somewhere that would attract tourists on the bay trail. “The DC fast chargers would add between 100-200 kilometres/range per hour. The more cost-effective option is more of a destination charge – somewhere where people can top up whilst having lunch/dinner or watching a movie.” There are 78 EVCS in Melbourne, including at Paint Spot in West Footscray and Point Cook Town Centre.
ERIN MILLER
A haunting view of Williamstown The dark side of Williamstown will be exposed on Friday the 13th with a ghost tour of the suburb’s murky past. Lantern Ghost Tours will host the Ghosts of the Old City tour through King William’s Town, the original capital of Victoria once awash with drunken sailors, convicts and colourful ladies of the night. Part entertainment, part history lesson, previous tours have attracted the sceptics, the curious, believers and even professional ghost hunters. Ghost host Erin Miller said the tour would take in Point Gellibrand, where floating prison
hulks held more than 6000 prisoners who rowed to shore each day to work on the old quarry. “We’ve had a few weird pictures come up from guests,” she said. “One of the pictures that was really compelling was taken at the Timeball Tower and a face had popped up in the picture … it looked very, very much like John Price.” Price, the harsh overseer of the convicts, was fatally bashed by his wards in 1857. The tour will also take in Victoria’s oldest morgue, forgotten burial grounds and hidden laneways where ladies of the night plied their trade.
Tour guests will have the option of dining beforehand at The Steampacket Hotel. The popular Willamstown pub is said to be haunted by opera singer John De Haga, who shot himself with a horse pistol after losing his voice. The Ghosts of the Old City tour will depart from Hobsons Bay Visitor Information Centre in Commonwealth Reserve at 8.30pm on Friday, July 13 and Saturday, July 14. Parents at their wits end have the chance to flip the tables on their kids before they drive them up the wall – all in aid of a good cause. Local theatre troupe wit incorporated has teamed up with Funtopia Maribyrnong for a fun-filled night raising funds for Wit Kids, a popular children’s drama program. Founder Belinda Campbell said Wit Kids had set a target of $10,000 to help keep the after-school drama program afloat. Ms Campbell said drama helped children improve communication, literacy and language skills. “There’s a level of camaraderie and closeness that’s necessary in drama class that the children don’t experience in many other places,” she said.
Wit Kids classes have been running since 2016, with 80 students currently enrolled. To keep the program accessible to as many families as possible, fees are kept at $40 a term. Ms Campbell said that because the fees don’t cover costs, supporters and fundraisers help keep the classes running. The fundraiser at Funtopia Maribyrnong will be run 4-9pm Friday, July 20. For $25, kids can climb the exciting interactive walls, explore the multi-level playground and let their imaginations run wild. Ms Campbell said parents were welcome to relax at the cafe inside the centre or join in. Tickets: witinc.com.au/funtopia Benjamin Millar

Maribyrnong car chase
A woman who crashed into a police car at high speed in Maribyrnong last week remains on the run. Several attempts were made to intercept a 2002 Holden Commodore station wagon in Raleigh Street, Maribyrnong, about 11am on Wednesday, but the driver refused to stop. The woman crashed into the police car in Chifley Drive, escaping east along Maribyrnong Road before dumping the car and fleeing on foot at the corner of Edgars and Eglington streets, Moonee Ponds. Detention centre remains open The federal government has failed to meet its own deadline for closing the Maribyrnong Immigration Detention Centre. Immigration minister Peter Dutton promised in May 2016 that the centre would be permanently closed within two years, along with Sydney’s Villawood Immigration Detention Centre and the Perth Immigration Residential Housing Facility. Yet the latest available figures show the number of people being detained at the centre, in Hampstead Road, Maidstone, actually increased between March and April. The April 26 Immigration Detention and Community Statistics Summary shows 106 people remain at Maribyrnong IDC, including 97 men and nine women – an increase of five men since March. The closures promised in 2016 were due to be staged over 24 months, to allow for infrastructure upgrades across remaining centres such as the Melbourne Immigration Transit Accommodation centre in Broadmeadows. A spokeswoman for the Department of Home Affairs said despite the delay, the Maribyrnong Immigration Detention Centre will close in 2018. “Once vacated, the site at Maribyrnong will be sold,” she said. The spokeswoman said the placement of detainees is subject to a number of factors, including the overall capacity of the network.

Fears have been raised that Aircraft railway station could have no ramp access when the Aviation Road level crossing is removed, leaving some commuters stranded. Station modifications are being considered as part of the level crossing removal. Hobsons Bay councillor Colleen Gates said the Level Crossing Removal Authority seemed to be looking at stairs and lifts to get people on to platforms, but no ramps. She said people didn’t want a repeat of the “debacle” that was Laverton station, which underwent a $93 million rebuild without ramps in 2010 and had more than 100 lift breakdowns within 10 months. “The dialogue with the community has always been focused on ramp access, particularly in light of the ongoing issues with lifts at Laverton station and the inaccessability that creates for elderly, disabled, families, parents with prams and so forth, so I’m quite alarmed,” Cr Gates said. Anne Knight, a member of the council’s level crossing Community Interest Group, said the lifts at Laverton station had been “a disaster”. “They’ve already had to completely replace them because they’ve broken down all the time, but I’ve been told that they’re still regularly out of order,” said Ms Knight, who uses a walking frame. If lifts are not working at Laverton, passengers who cannot use stairs are advised to get off at the following station, which is Aircraft. “If they put lifts in at Aircraft and have the same sort of problems, will they send people down to Williams Landing?” Ms Knight said. “How far away have you got to go?” Level crossing project director Tony Hedley said a final design had not been decided.

Gellibrand light to come home By Goya Dmytryshchak An iconic Gellibrand lighthouse destroyed when hit by a ship in 1976 is returning to Williamstown. The National Trust has gifted the Gellibrand Pile Light to Seaworks – it will return to Williamstown in a community parade on August 31. The date will also mark the official opening of a $3 million upgrade to Seaworks. Built in 1906, the pile light guarded the point until it was struck by the ship Melbourne Trader in 1976 before it was set ablaze.
On the morning of June 21, the fog horn on the light wasn’t operating when it was hit by the 7000-tonne vessel and left hanging precariously. The harbourmaster of the day ordered the pile light be set on fire to reduce the risk to his men. The lantern and dome were salvaged and donated to the National Trust by the Victorian Public Works Department in 1978. For many years, the reconstructed pile light was on show at the Polly Woodside maritime museum in Port Melbourne. Seaworks and many Williamstown residents have long rallied to bring her home.
Seaworks chairman Trevor Huggard said the pile light’s return was timely given the recent upgrade to the maritime precinct. “This was no ordinary navigation light – it was Williamstown’s own Gellibrand light,” he said. “It was manned by tough men and their wives and children who were Williamstown residents. Descendants still live in Williamstown today. “Many words were written about it, including Down by the Gellibrand Light, a ditty that could be heard loudly echoing from the nearby football ground every time Williamstown had a victory.”

Old and sold is the plan More than 25 local and interstate dealers will present their wares at the 26th annual Antiques and Collectables Fair at Williamstown Town Hall. The three-day fair is a major fundraiser for community projects supported by the Rotary Club of Hoppers Crossing. Fair co-ordinator Trevor Jago said that over the 26 years of the fair, about $300,000 had been put back into the community. “Our fair is now probably the second biggest fair in Victoria,” he said. “It holds a lot of prestige among the dealers. “We try to get a whole range, from jewellery to furniture to bric-a-brac to vintage clothing.” Mr Jago said a lot ot the dealers were eager to buy – as well as sell. “We often say to people, if they want something valued, if you’re not living too far away, these dealers can quite often come along

and have a look at it and give you an idea,” he said. “If it’s too big to move, bring a photo for them to have a look at.” Funds raised will be used in the club’s local, community and international projects. The fair will run on Friday, July 13, from 5-8pm, Saturday from 10am-5pm and Sunday from 10am-4pm. Entry costs $10, free for children. Details: Trevor, 0408 486 432. Goya Dmytryshchak

Alert over bee parasite By Goya Dmytryshchak Beekeepers between Newport and Yarraville are on alert after a parasite that attacks honey bees was brought into the Port of Melbourne by a ship from Texas. Agriculture Victoria is asking to be notified of any unregistered or wild hives within a surveillance zone around the port following the detection of varroa mite. Acting chief plant health officer Nigel Ainsworth said they were undertaking precautionary surveillance of bee hives within a two-kilometre radius of the detection. The zone extends to Lyell Street at Yarraville
in the north, Elizabeth Street at Newport in the east, John Street at Newport in the south and Rosny Street at Port of Melbourne in the west. “The varroa mite is a pest of honey bees … the mites live on the adult honey bees and the larvae and basically suck the blood out of them,” Dr Ainsworth said. “That in itself is obviously not a good thing if you’re a honey bee, but they also carry quite serious virus diseases of bees as well. “So, the end result is that the colonies become weakened and often the whole hive will die out after infection with varroa. “The industries overseas where varroa’s established have had very big impacts – New
Zealand’s lost a lot of bees – and what industry might be left after varroa is a bit speculative but certainly they take a very big hit. “As well as the bee industry itself, there’d be a lot of damage to agricultural industries that rely on beehives being taken into the production areas to assist pollination.” No penalties will apply to anyone who comes forward with an unregistered hive. Call 9217 4166 or visit agriculture.vic.gov.au State Quarantine Response Team members will inspect beehives in the surveillance zone. (Agriculture Victoria)
A trek in caring territory Jillian Head is putting her best foot forward to support the work of Breast Cancer Network Australia. Ms Head, from Footscray, will take part in a trek along the Larapinta Trail in the Northern Territory to raise money for the network. She will start the five-day, 64-kilometre walk next week with 14 women affected by breast cancer for company. “I am really looking forward to connecting with these women and hearing their amazing stories,” she said. Ms Head, who works as a programs officer for the network, said the organisation supported, represented and connected Australians affected by breast cancer. “The focus is not so much on breast cancer as a disease, but on creating a powerful voice to enable women and men to be well informed,
and to receive the very best treatment and care after a diagnosis,” she said. Ms Head said that she had originally hoped to raise $3000, so was “very stoked” to have raised more than $4290. The women participating in the outback trek have raised a combined total of more than $68,000. To help raise money, Ms Head has held cake stalls and sausage sizzles, and organised a “dance in pink” event for her friends. “One thing that I have discovered during all my fundraising is the power of community,” Ms Head said. “When we all pull together, it is amazing what can be achieved.” To support the cause, visit donate.grassrootz. com/bcna/outback-adventure/jillian-head. Altona Meadows robber jailed By Goya Dmytryshchak An Altona Meadows man has been sentenced to five years’ jail and faces deportation to New Zealand for robbing a St Albans milk bar owner at gunpoint and other offences. Dennis Taute, 35, was handed a non-parole period of two and a half years after pleading guilty in the County Court to multiple charges including armed robbery, being a prohibited
person possessing and using a firearm, contravening bail conditions and fraudulently using a registration plate. Last September, Taute walked into a family-owned milk bar in St Albans and pointed a firearm at the chest of the Vietnamese woman behind the counter. He handed her a bag and reached over the till, taking cash from the register, before gesturing towards the cigarettes and starting to count
to three. Taute fled with goods valued at $200 on a motorbike parked out the front. Another person on a second motorbike had been waiting for him and they rode off together. Two months later, police were called to the scene of a motorbike crash in Sunshine at which Taute was recognised as being wanted over the milk bar robbery. Police executed a search warrant at his Altona Meadows home and found five stolen
registration plates, a Yamaha motorbike and a loaded sawn-off shotgun that was concealed in a wall cavity under a poster. The court heard Taute claimed the gun wasn’t his even though its outline was traced on a tool board that was up on a wall. The court heard that New Zealand-born Taute, who arrived in Australia aged two, was likely to have his visa cancelled and be deported after serving his sentence.
Many branch offers Nature lovers of all kinds are being invited to get their hands dirty for National Tree Day on Sunday, July 29. Hobsons Bay council will host a planting event at Seaholme’s Altona Coastal Park, a habitat of many endangered birds. More than 2600 indigenous trees, shrubs and grasses will be planted between 10am and 1pm. Cr Sandra Wilson stressed the importance of looking after the municipality’s green open spaces and coastal and wetland areas. “Hobsons Bay is home to a diverse range of ecosystems that provide habitat to an impressive range of flora and fauna, including many rare and threatened species,” she said. “The indigenous trees, shrubs and grasses that will be planted on National Tree Day are part of an ongoing project to create a wildlife corridor. More than 5000 plants have been planted over the last three years.” The event will also feature roving entertainment by nature-loving performers The Connies and a free barbecue lunch.
Maribyrnong council’s event will be held along the Maribyrnong River at Braybrook, with the aim of removing weeds such as Chilean needle grass and serrated tussock so native species will return to the area. The Friends of Greenwich Bay group will hold its event along the Newport foreshore a week earlier, on July 22. NAIDOC Week unites The proud achievements of Indigenous and Torres Strait Islander women are being celebrated in the west this week as part of NAIDOC Week. Under the theme “Because of her, we can!”, NAIDOC Week (July 8-15) is highlighting the positive impacts Indigenous women make within their families and across broader society. A yarn-bombing installation, created in indigenous and Torres Strait Islander flag colours, was unveiled at Braybrook Community Hub on Monday to mark the week. The festivities included music by Robert Champion, pom-pom making and morning tea. Hobsons Bay council held a flag-raising ceremony on Tuesday, while Maribyrnong council held morning teas at Braybrook,
Footscray and Maribyrnong libraries. For locals such as Western Health manager of Aboriginal health policy and planning Jacqueline Watkins, this year’s theme has a personal resonance. A descendant of Jingili and Mudburra people, Ms Watkins said her mother was taken from her family at the age of eight, so she spent the rest of her childhood at a Catholic mission on Melville Island. “She never knew her parents, grandparents, brother, sisters, uncles, aunties,” she said. “It was almost half a century before mum was reunited with her siblings and we were able to finally have our connection to our culture, language and land.” Benjamin Millar

MY PLACE Altona’s Paolo Taliana, a passionate musician, has toured with the likes of The Supremes. He speaks with Goya Dmytryshchak. Tell me about how you became interested in music? I was a little kid growing up in Tripoli (Libya) and my father was employed as a petrol delivery supervisor at the American air base located three kilometres from our house, so I had the opportunity to visit the base quite often, watching and listening to American bands playing R&B, blues and jazz. I focused on the guitar players and I decided that I wanted a guitar and that I was going to be a guitar player. You’ve toured with some of the biggest names in music such as The Supremes and John Farnham. Tell me an interesting story from those times?
(Damjan Janevski)
In the early ’80s, my band Koco got booked to support and back Helen Shapiro (a very famous English vocalist). She is best known for her 1960s UK chart toppers You Don’t Know and Walking Back to Happiness. This was the first encounter with an international star and in order to impress Helen and the Australian agency that booked the show, the band stayed up all night to rehearse and memorise the whole show. It was a good start and the band ended up getting lots of other gigs supporting and backing Australian and international artists. What are you doing nowadays musically? I’m employed by the Department of Education

Harvey Norman Flooring keeps the doors open as a new era dawns The renovations at Harvey Norman Flooring Maribyrnong are putting the business into a bit of a spin – but the doors are still open and customers are very welcome.
The secret to his success, Sam says, is customer service.
Proprietor of the flooring department, Sam Arefin, says it’s an exciting time.
“We offer a genuine retail experience. We want to help our customers find the best of what they envision for their project, in budget.”
“We started with exterior renovations and now we are re-fitting the showroom,” he says. “I know it may not look like it – but we are very much open for business.” The renovations began in January and will be completed in about two months. Sam explains that even while renovations are ongoing, new, exclusive products are in store and the business is expanding. “Novocore is a new product which is a hybrid hard floor,” Sam says. “A step up from vinyl yet with the look of a timber floor, it is waterproof, has cork backing for comfort and, interestingly, has an antibacterial finish. “Not only is it pet friendly, but due to its anti-bacterial finish, it is great to know it has this added advantage to keep your family property clean and safe.” Harvey Norman Flooring Maribyrnong is offering up to 50 per cent off rugs and up to 20 per cent off laminate and carpet during renovations.
14 MARIBYRNONG & HOBSONS BAY STAR WEEKLY \ JULY 11, 2018
“I insist my staff offer the best advice and find the right product for our customers,” he says.
Harvey Norman Flooring Maribyrnong sells carpeting, timber products and laminates as well as next-generation hybrid flooring and a great range of carpets. “I am proud to say that our Maribyrnong store is the leader in Harvey Norman rug sales for the past five years,” Sam says. “We know our rugs. We also offer free in-home quotations, which is really helpful as we can fit in with your schedule. “We’ll travel anywhere in the west.” Harvey Norman Flooring, Harvey Norman Centre, 169 Rosamond Road, Maribyrnong. 4A Bayview Street, Williamstown Sometimes, everything is contained in the street name, as this exceptional Bayview address so beautifully demonstrates. From its substantial balcony and light filled spaces, this outstanding contemporary property appreciates un-interrupted outlooks across parkland, over the bay and beyond to a horizon that delivers spectacular sunsets. A quality kitchen and sunny central deck further enhance upstairs proportions above three double bedrooms served by two fully tiled, impressively appointed bathrooms while to the rear, an inviting retreat and private courtyard precede an entirely self-contained apartment on top of a secure double garage. Polished concrete floors, heating, cooling and surround sound complement a refined residence that relates to the bay as closely as the name suggests - with schools, bike paths and the swimming beach instantly accessible.

49 John Street, Williamstown An approach that eliminated compromise was clearly behind the creation of this landmark c2012 home, where irresistible spaces by the alluring lap pool are complemented by a superb Carrara marble kitchen and a separate alfresco barbeque bench and bar. Alternative upstairs and downstairs main bedrooms, each accompanied by a sophisticated marble ensuite, set the luxury level for three further bedrooms sharing a superb third bathroom while a light-filled office and children’s lounge/play-room add ideal family flexibility. Above the double garage, accessed from second frontage to Napier Street, the ultimate ‘man cave’ completes a spectacular residence, unequivocally in a class of its own, around the corner from Douglas Parade.

SPORT What starts well, ends well for Falcons with the ANL competition, which finished last Sunday, and that was a welcome relief for the Falcons. Having already had Tahnysha Salanoa playing some games with the side, they welcomed back Jacqui Newton for her first game of the season. Lind said that while they only had Newton for a half, they were pleased with the role she had played. “Jacqui was only able to play a half and our aim was for her to nullify Samantha Gooden,” she said. “We kept an eye on what they were doing with her and she [Newton] was able to do that.” Newton was called into the Melbourne Vixens squad in the past two weekends as an injury replacement. Lind said that while Newton might not get court time for the Vixens, being in that environment was exciting for her. Lind said they were hopeful of getting their other ANL players, Jane Cook and Molly Jovic, back this week.
The win leaves the Falcons in fifth and just percentage outside the top four. Lind said they were where they were hoping to be at this time of the year. “We’ll give it everything to try and make finals,” she said. “If not, it’s still been a good year. “We’re pretty pleased with the group and made some big gains. We’ll be in a better situation going into the next two to three years.” Lind said the club had submitted its case for a VNL licence for the next five years as part of the regular licensing process. She said that Melbourne’s western suburbs deserves to have a team in the state’s top competition. “We’re clearly ranked number one on performance the last 10 years,” she said. “We’re set up in the inner western suburbs and we are now looking at the growth areas like Tarneit, Point Cook, Hoppers Crossing.” Tara Murray
Vikings still in the hunt By Lance Jenkinson Realistically, Altona could not afford to slide any further if it was to stay in the hunt for a double chance in the Western Region Football League division 1. After a barren month, in which they lost three of their previous four games, the Vikings had a bit of convincing to do to get the football public back on board with their premiership aspirations. What better way to announce that you are back than with a 70-point win over fellow contenders Spotswood on the road at Donald McLean Reserve on Saturday? “It was obviously a great result to beat Spotswood at Spotswood who are going really strongly,” Vikings coach Saade Ghazi said. “We had to win to stay in touch with the top three. The top five are very even, so you can’t afford to drop too many games if you want to finish in that top three, let alone still make the finals.” This was Altona at its brutal best. The Vikings punched holes through the league’s best defence, finishing with 18 goals from 31 scoring shots. They were stingy defensively too, keeping Spotswood to just seven goals and their lowest score of the season. What is more impressive is the Vikings did it without star forward Patrick Rose, the competition’s leading goalkicker with 47, who was a late withdrawal with tonsillitis. Also out were key players Luke Goetz (representative football) and Elliot Cavallaro (hamstring), but it did not deter them. Every Vikings player could look in the mirror and say “job well done”. “I guess that’s what you get when you have 22 players really contributing, playing well and playing their role,” Ghazi said. Mitch Turnbull relished the chance to play deep inside forward 50. Kicking five goals, Turnbull effectively replaced the goals Altona missed through Rose’s absence. Josh Rafferty was a huge presence in the ruck, locking horns in a fierce battle with Spotswood skipper Murray Boyd. Lee Spiteri’s role on Woodsmen star onballer Tom Langlands was important, limiting the carnage the veteran has the potential to wreak. Josh MacDonald was dangerous in attack for Altona with four goals, including two crucial goals into the wind. The top five teams, including Altona and Spotswood, all have eight wins to their name. It only increases the importance of Altona’s home clash with Sunshine and Spotswood’s trip to Deer Park this Saturday.
IN THE DOGHOUSE ■ In the next few months the attention of the thoroughbred horse racing world will be on Melbourne in the lead up to the Spring Racing Carnival and much of that attention will centre on the Werribee International Horse Centre, where a big contingent of winning chances will be housed. The centre secured the future of the Werribee Racing Club, which was in a very precarious situation for a number of years. Despite the rich history of the club, it was close to shutting the doors. Thankfully, racing continues working in partnership with the international calendar and agenda. There are many success stories to come from the track. A 10-year-old Brad Spicer of Wyndham Vale used to sell papers at the Werribee track on race days to earn pocket money. Now he is one of the leading horse syndicators in Victoria. His group one success with Star Spangled Banner, Commanding Jewel and, recently, with Awesome Rock is testament to his growing stature. I will be highlighting other successes in coming weeks. ■ Concussion issues forced the early retirement from AFL football of Jack Fitzpatrick, but he remains involved as match day runner and part-time ruck coach at Werribee in the VFL. A Wyndhamvale junior, he had eight years in the AFL system and battled chronic fatigue syndrome, diabetes and the usual injuries before a head knock pulled the curtain down on his playing career. The human attrition rate in football is very high and these young men – and, soon, young women – must make big adjustments to make it. Like any job in today’s world, it does not last. But in some ways, professional athletes are better prepared as they are aware of that before they sign up to play. ■ Pat Hodgson epitomised everything you could want in a Bulldogs supporter. She was passionate, vocal, reliable, resilient, respectful and there every week. Pat attended functions, training nights – everything red, white and blue. Pat and daughter Jenny virtually became the face of the club there for a time, especially after their appearance in the Year of the Dogs documentary. Author Martin Flanagan dedicated his book on the 2016 premiership – A Wink to the Universe – to Pat. She was hugely popular at the club and will be greatly missed by all. Pat passed away last Friday; condolences to Jenny and the family.

Strong first and last quarters set up a solid win for the City West Falcons against the Boroondara Express in the Victorian Netball League championship division. The Falcons made a flying start, before some sloppy play and lapses in concentration in the middle two quarters allowed the Express to stay in the game. A stunning final quarter, including 18 goals from young goal shooter Uneeq Palavi, sealed a 61-47 win for the Falcons. Falcons coach Marg Lind said her side had played good netball in patches. “In between wasn’t great … we were ahead all night,” she said. “They had a few Australian Netball League players back, which presented a few challenges. Our girls were able to hold their own.” Palavi, who was awarded the three votes by the umpires, finished with 44 goals from 56 attempts. The round was the first that hadn’t clashed

Jets make their mark at national championships All Australian honours for key defender Buku Khamis was the highlight for the Western Jets’ star six representing Vic Metro at the AFL under 18 national championships. It was overall a mixed bag for the Jets players, with some producing football to savour and others being struck down with injuries. The talk of the Jets was undoubtedly Khamis, who was named in the backline in the team of the championships. The St Albans product, who was born in South Sudan, would have caught the eyes of the recruiters for his athleticism, intercept marking, reading of the play and kicking efficiency. “I think his first three games were excellent,” Jets coach Torin Baker said. “He showed what he is really good at: his aerial work was excellent, his kicking was one of the most efficient over the championships and he took his good TAC Cup form into the championships and showed what he can do.” Xavier O’Halloran is known as a work horse
and a leader in the midfield at the Jets. The Werribee Districts youngster showed both of those qualities and more as captain of a Vic Metro side that fell one game short of a title. O’Halloran was never too far away when Vic Metro needed a lift at a crucial part of a game. “The reports on him were that they were really pleased with the way that he led the team and his commitment,” Baker said. “They had some close games and Xavier really stood up at some important times.” Zak Butters would be delighted with his decision to postpone a shoulder operation until after the championships. It was a slight gamble for the Darley teenager, knowing a subluxation of his shoulder could occur at any time, but he pulled through most of the championships and showed his qualities in the midfield for Vic Metro. Butters did have his championships ended prematurely when his shoulder did become dislocated in the final game, but he surely did enough to impress the recruiters.
“Considering his shoulder did pop out first in November, to get through to this stage, he’s got to be happy,” Baker said. “Medically he was cleared … To do what he’s done this year has been a credit to him.” Stefan Radovanovic was used in a deep defensive role for Vic Metro. Radovanovic, from Keilor, stuck to his task and was a driving force out of the backline. “Stef played three out of the four [games]and he played his role in all three,” Baker said. “He was really good in the one-on-one contests.” Daly Andrews, who hails from Werribee Districts, and bottom-ager Emerson Jeka, from Altona, were the hard luck stories. Andrews produced an eye-catching performance against the Allies, but suffered a blow to the head and had delayed concussion, which ruled him out of the championships, while Jeka was due to make his Vic Metro debut, only to be sidelined with hip soreness. Altona Gators will be hosting its Pink Sports Day, in support of Breast Cancer Network Australia, on Saturday. The Gators will be aiming to raise funds and awareness of breast cancer, which strikes thousands of Australian people each year. Gators director of coaching Randy Shanklin is looking forward to a big turnout at the ‘The Swamp’ for the community event. “We hope that everyone will come together, pink up and get behind the teams as they play for a good cause.” In Big V basketball men’s division 2, Altona’s finals hopes took a hit with a 73-65 loss to Southern Peninsula. This Saturday marks the final regular season games for Altona’s youth league men’s and women’s teams. The youth league women can secure their spot in the finals with a win over Knox when they tip-off Pink Sports Day from 5pm.

City’s streak continues By Lance Jenkinson A hat-trick from striker Marcus Sherif has continued Altona City’s resurgence in the Football Federation Victoria men’s state league 1. City extended their unbeaten run to six games in a memorable 3-0 win over Sydenham Park at Keilor Lodge Reserve on Friday night. A rare Friday night appearance for City made it a challenge for their preparation, but the experience of coach Andy O’Dell proved crucial in the lead-up to the match. “As you can see from the result, the preparation was spot on,” City president Joe Tanti said. “We had a light week, hit the pools on Tuesday night and a light night on Thursday night. “Andy had them up and ready to go.” Sherif’s big night got started early. The youngster scored two of his three goals in the opening 20 minutes to give Altona City the foundations for victory. A third goal was merely the cherry on the top for a player who is developing before our eyes. 42 MARIBYRNONG & HOBSONS BAY STAR WEEKLY \ JULY 11, 2018
“Slowly, under the guidance of Andy, he’s improving every year,” Tanti said. “This year he’s putting in a lot more goals and starting after last year coming on off the bench. “With every year he’s getting stronger and learning to take the knocks from the better defenders in state league 1. “He’s definitely improving with every match.” Altona City has picked up 12 points from its past six matches. City has gone from a cellar dweller to mid-table in that time. It was some shrewd recruiting from City that turned the season around – and some of it by luck. City added steel to its defence with the signings of Nathan Cook, who returned to the club from Green Gully and immediately took over the captain’s armband from the departed Steve Thomson, James Neighbour, who returned from Mazenod Victory and Dean Faithfull, who hails from England but was playing interstate. The returns of Cook and Neighbour, two players who understand the culture of City, was massive. “The main reason they wanted to come
back is because over the years they’ve seen the amount of work that supporters put in, players, coaches and they didn’t want to see that all come undone by relegation,” Tanti said. “With them there, I think the team has improved five-fold compared to what it was.” Altona City will be eager to keep their charge up the ladder going when it hosts Western Suburbs on Saturday night. Meanwhile, Yarraville Glory has moved out of the state league 1 relegation zone with a 1-0 win over North Sunshine Eagles at McIvor Reserve. Altona East Phoenix enjoyed a resounding 4-1 win over Geelong Rangers to steer further clear of the men’s state league 2 relegation zone. Williamstown had a disappointing nil-all draw with bottom-of-the-ladder La Trobe University in men’s state league 3. In the women’s state league 3 catch-up round, Altona City recorded a 3-1 win over Greenvale United, while Altona Magic won 2-0 over Point Cook. In the men’s NPL 2 west, Altona Magic was merciless in its 7-1 demolition of Melbourne Victory at Epping Stadium.
Western Jets, minus a number of their Vic Metro stars, had their worst performance of the TAC Cup season in a 56-point loss to the Calder Cannons at RAMS Arena in Craigieburn on Saturday. Not once has coach Torin Baker had to give the Jets players a spray this season for desire-related issues, but he was close to it after the defeat to the Cannons. “We just didn’t have the hunger, the desire, the grit that you need,” he said. “I actually said to the players that it’s the first time I’ve had to question them in those areas this year.” The Jets still remain in the top four ahead of their July 22 meeting with second-placed Gippsland Power at the Morwell Football Ground.
Athletics
Western Athletics star Jack Rayner took out the half marathon at the recent Gold Coast Marathon event. Rayner, from Altona, completed the 21.1 kilometre course in a personal best time of 1:03.12 and secured the IAAF Oceania Half Marathon Championships in the process. Maribyrnong’s Madeline Hills won the 10-kilometre race with the second fastest time ever recorded at the 40-year event. Hills crossed in 32:35 – just 18 seconds off the previous race record set by Lisa Jane Weightman in 2012.
