Challenge stacks up It’s game-on for punter versus burger. Altona Sports Club this week introduced the “Alpha and omega burger and shake challenge”. Anyone who can polish off a 20-centimetre burger and chocolate brownie shake in 20 minutes gets their $50 back. The club’s John Dawson said this was no ordinary burger. “It’s a toasted milk bun with three 150-gram beef patties – I’m choking already – 120 grams of smoked pulled pork, 150-gram mac-and-cheese disk, 120 grams grilled bacon, four slices of jack cheddar cheese, some cos lettuce, sliced tomatoes, housemade pickles and alpha omega sauce,” he said. “That is served with a bowl of onion rings with barbecue sauce, a bowl of chips, a bowl of salad and a chocolate brownie shake.” Mr Dawson said he wasn’t sure how many calories were in the meal. “I put weight on just looking at it,” he said. Footscray footpath fight By Benjamin Millar A treasured Footscray tradition could vanish following a crackdown on footpath traders. Elderly Vietnamese-Australian traders have for years spent Saturdays plying their wares on Leeds Street in Footscray’s Little Saigon, selling items including home-grown herbs, chillies and pot plants. But Maribyrnong council is warning traders they risk $500 fines and having their goods impounded for trading without a permit. The flashpoint for the footpath fight is just a stone’s throw from where the bustling Little Saigon markets burnt down almost 18 months ago.
The council’s move has sparked a backlash in a community still mourning the market’s fiery end. Footscray resident Felicity Watson said the traders should be left alone, describing them as part of the area’s social fabric, showing the suburb at its best. “The vibrant character of our area is already being eroded by generic new residential development,” she said. “We need to hang on to the traditions that bring life to our neighbourhood and provide places for communities to connect.” Long-term customer Mark Chu, who lives nearby, said the traders brought a unique colour and flair to Footscray.
“They actually bring curious outsiders to the area, which desperately needs the pedestrian traffic,” he said. “The council should be focusing resources to areas in Footscray that actually need action.” Maribyrnong planning services director Nigel Higgins said the area had become a popular spot for itinerant traders who did not have permits. He said the crackdown followed complaints from nearby businesses and breaches of local laws covering food safety and access. “It is common knowledge that food can carry contaminants or viruses that can be damaging, if not fatal, to a person’s health,” he said. “To allow itinerant trading to operate without
a permit, council carries the burden of that responsibility.” Mr Higgins said council officers, accompanied by a Vietnamese interpreter, recently advised the traders of the need for permits and erected signs in Vietnamese and English. He said the council would happily work with traders on gaining permits, which cost about $30 a day. Councillor Mia McGregor said on Facebook that decisions had been made by council staff without councillors being briefed. She said she was in discussions with chief executive Stephen Wall over the matter and encouraged people to email feedback on the crackdown to the council.

As a Council we’re committed to protecting our city’s significant trees as they are an important part of our natural and cultural heritage. A list of ‘Significance Criteria’ for the nomination of trees has been developed by Council based on the National Trust’s criteria for nomination of significant trees. To be considered for the register, nominated trees must be located on private land and meet at least one of the significance criteria - we’ll have an independent arborist inspect and make recommendations to Council as to which trees should be included on the register. We’ve also got Council’s draft Significant Tree Register Policy, which formalises Council’s position on Significant Trees, available for comment. Nominations for significant trees close 30 November 2018 and feedback on the draft Significant Tree Register Policy close on 12 July 2018.
MY VIEW We’re inviting the community to nominate for our new Active Transport Advisory Committee to help shape and improve walking and cycling in Maribyrnong. Cycling is continuing to grow in terms of both sustainable transport and leisure usage, and safety and cycling infrastructure are always priorities with us. Our proposed budget includes $2.1 million to fund footpaths and cycle ways, as well as continuing our education campaigns and skills courses. The Active Transport Advisory Committee will provide advice on the delivery of cycling and walking strategies and projects including the development of a high quality network of routes. The Committee will also inform Council of issues relating to improving conditions and safety for cycling and walking and act as a sounding board to inform the development of projects and programs that encourage a culture of walking and cycling.

Man jailed for grooming youths By Benjamin Millar A Maribyrnong man has been jailed after sending sexual messages to a 12-year-old boy on social media and arranging to meet what he thought was a 14-year-old boy, but who turned out to be an undercover police officer. David Botting, 31, pleaded guilty in the County Court to one charge of transmitting indecent communications to a person under 16 years of age and one charge of using a carriage service to procure a person believed to be under 16 years of age for sexual activity.
The court heard the events took place between January and April last year. Botting used Instagram to send indecent communications to a 12-year-old boy, later using Facebook to communicate with and arrange to meet a boy he believed to be 14 years of age for sex. The court heard Botting engaged the 12-year-old boy in a private conversation on Instagram by sending him a direct message, later making sexual comments and asking the boy about his sexual interests. He began offering gifts and asking personal
questions of an increasingly sexual nature. In March, the boy’s mother discovered the conversations and reported the matter to police. A police officer then posed as a 14-year-old boy on Facebook, sending Botting a friend request. Botting asked to Skype with the boy, but the officer instead sent two photos of a boy aged about 14 years of age. The court heard that while the conversations began as a general discussion, they soon became sexualised and escalated. Botting asked the officer to meet with him,
saying he should not tell his parents. They arranged to meet at Hawthorn McDonald’s, where Botting was arrested. When interviewed by police, Botting said he was “90 per cent sure” the Facebook account was an older person pretending to be 14 years of age. County Court Judge Sue Pullen said while Botting’s guilty pleas indicated some remorse, there remained a level of denial. Botting was last month convicted and sentenced to 24 months’ imprisonment, with a non-parole period of nine months.

Westgate Highway Patrol is calling on drivers to be on their royal best behaviour this long weekend as police flood the state’s freeways and major arterials. Westgate Highway Patrol unit commander Keith Kissack said police would increase their presence on Wyndham, Hobsons Bay and Maribyrnong roads during the Queen’s Birthday long weekend for the statewide Operation Regal, from June 8-11. The operation will target speeding, driver distraction, seatbelts, fatigue and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs – the top five contributing factors to road trauma. “Motorists are requested to stay within the speed limit, don’t drink alcohol or take drugs and drive, leave your mobile phone out of reach, wear your seatbelt and make sure you are well rested,” Senior Sergeant Kissack said. “Road trauma isn’t just about the people who die – it’s about the enormous impact on the community, from the family members, to the emergency services workers who have to deal with these tragedies on a daily basis, to the police who have to deliver the devastating news to loved ones.” RoadSafe Westgate Community Road Safety Council chairman Jim Giddings added: “It has been demonstrated time after time that speed is a contributing factor in most road crashes … stay within the speed limit and drive to suit the conditions you face.” Last year, 453 offences were detected across Wyndham during the Queen’s Birthday, including 136 speeding drivers, 25 unlicensed drivers, 5 drunk drivers and 13 disqualified or suspended drivers.

An organisation helping people living with multiple sclerosis has paid tribute to its tireless volunteers. Multiple Sclerosis Limited (MS) marked the recent National Volunteer Week with a function for its volunteers at Yarraville Club. For 60 years MS has provided support to people living with multiple sclerosis, a debilitating disease that affects more than 25,000 Australians. Its work depends on the generosity of volunteers such as Margaret Bateman, who has notched up three years of service for MS. Mrs Bateman is part of the MS Community Visitors Scheme which matches volunteers with older people at risk of loneliness.

Citation for ‘forgotten’ battle By Goya Dmytryshchak It is with mixed emotions that Williamstown Vietnam veteran Roger Cheal looks at the green and gold award he has received for bravery 50 years after the war’s largest and bloodiest battle for Australians. Mr Cheal recently attended the 50th anniversary and commemoration of the Battle of Coral-Balmoral at Townsville with his 1st Royal Australian Regiment infantry battalion. Australian Governor-General Sir Peter Cosgrove awarded his and eight other units a citation for “extraordinary gallantry”. English-born Mr Cheal was 20 when he was called up by the Australian Army. At 22, he was deployed with the 1RAR of the 1st Australian Task Force to fight against the North Vietnamese and Viet Cong about 40 kilometres from Saigon. The month-long battle of Coral-Balmoral in 1968 claimed the lives of 26 and 100 were wounded defending Saigon. When he returned home to Australia, Mr Cheal said veterans like him were vilified. “It’s very hard to understand, ourselves, 50 years of not being recognised,” he said. “Suddenly, in some places, we are, but it feels surreal. “Everyone knows about the battle of Long Tan, but few have heard of Coral. “When I came back from Vietnam, I was living in Flemington and I went to a local RSL and they said; ‘Go away, you’re not wanted’.” Mr Cheal said most Vietnam veterans experienced this rejection. “We felt that we were doing the right thing and the fact that people didn’t recognise it afterwards, we were worried that we’d wasted our time,” he said. “Sometimes, you think of America and other

allies, they walked out of Vietnam, left the people in there. “Some of our platoon tried to find the South Vietnamese Interpreter [Phuc, pictured] who worked with us for some months. “We had been told he was wounded but were
unable to find out any more. There’s probably hundreds of thousands of South Vietnamese who lost their lives because they supported us.” Mr Cheal said it was not his place to discuss the rights or wrongs of any battle, or even of war itself.
“But I say that people will, even must, fight a regime they judge as evil,” he said. “Comparisons … are inevitable after one battle gets more unbalanced honour than another … comparing Gallipoli and Fromelles or Long Tan and Coral is meaningless.”

Yarraville land lost to tunnel

Land beneath hundreds of Yarraville homes and businesses has been acquired to pave the way for the West Gate Tunnel toll road. It is the first time special state government acquisition laws established by Labor in 2009 have been employed. Transurban’s West Gate Tunnel will see twin three-lane tunnels built under Yarraville, from the West Gate Freeway to just before the Maribyrnong River. Roads Minister Luke Donnellan has gazetted the land acquisition underneath 260 properties – including more than 100 houses – without any compensation offer. The tunnels beneath hoouses will be about 15 metres underground, but as shallow as five metres beneath the soil under non-residential buildings. Land titles created prior to 1891 covered to the centre of the earth, while those issued after that year went to only 50 feet, or about 15 metres. Letters recently sent to homeowners, telling them the land beneath their feet was now owned by the government, said they might be entitled to compensation if they could show a financial loss from seizure of the “sub-stratum” land. Mr Donnellan has pledged that in the “highly unlikely” event any home was damaged by construction of the tunnels it would be repaired by the government. Yarraville homeowners and businesses have two years to seek compensation.

Williamstown’s Kate Skene says she feels like her community wrapped its arms around her after people donated thousands towards her new wheelchair. The disability advocate was eligible for partial government funding – but to receive it, she had to raise $5500 herself. “My church, Williamstown Church of Christ – and my church is absolutely amazing, they were probably the main instigators of it – they suggested I start a GoFundMe page,” Ms Skene said. “Within a month, we had the $5500.” Ms Skene, 41, received her new wheels – dubbed “Barney the Purple Wheelchair” – last Thursday. The power had been cutting out on her former wheelchair, which was about 10-years-old and past its use-by date. Diagnosed with multiple sclerosis at 19 while in her second year of university studying to be a kindergarten teacher, Ms Skene completed her degree and went on to teach. She later went returned to university to do her masters and today volunteers twice a week at Robina Scott Kindergarten. Ms Skene said her GoFundMe page, called “Let’s Get Kate Some Wheels”, had become “a real community project”. “I still get comments from people on the street I don’t even know saying, ‘When’s it coming, when’s it coming, I put $20 in the plate for you’,” she said. “When the world’s gone nuts and is full of bad news, this was a really good news story. “It was just incredible. This is the only way I can think of to say a big genuinely heartfelt ‘thank you’ to Williamstown and the wider community for getting me some wheels.”

Ambo staff name danger spots By Alesha Capone and Charlene Macaulay More than 40 locations in Melbourne’s northern and western suburbs have been flagged as potentially dangerous for paramedics. Ambulance Victoria last week released a list of more than 230 suburbs and towns across the state which are home to locations where paramedics have encountered patients or individuals who could pose a “threat” to their safety. The list included locations where Ambulance Victoria staff have encountered aggressive
dogs, weapons, “unsafe houses”, verbal threats and assaults, between January 2016 and March 13 this year. Several areas in the north and west featured, including suburbs in the Wyndham, Melton, Brimbank, Maribyrnong, Hobsons Bay, Moonee Valley, Hume and Whittlesea municipalities. Sunbury and Yarraville each had three locations included on the list (Shepparton had the most, with five). Broadmeadows, Keilor Downs, Meadow Heights, Sunshine West, Thomastown and Werribee each had two locations on the list.

Ms Medina put her midwifery studies at Australian Catholic University on hold and began the long road to recovery. “There was a hole on my leg at one stage where I could see the bone,” she said. Ms Medina is tackling the five kilometre event at this year’s Run Melbourne to give back to the hospital that helped her. “I just want to spread the word about the work that Peter Mac does, and anything I can do to help them with this run would be fantastic,” she said. Christine Medina once feared she may never walk properly again, but soon she will tackle a very special run. The Braybrook woman is running the five kilometre event at Run Melbourne on July 29, marking almost two years since she was diagnosed with a rare cancer in her leg just months after her 20th birthday. Ms Medina said she visited her doctor when she noticed a lump on her leg and following surgery to remove the lump, tests revealed it was cancerous. “Apparently it’s literally a one in a million cancer,” Ms Medina said. “It was a shock when the doctors at Peter Mac [Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre] told me. I remember I had to go back to uni after the appointment, and I went through Fitzroy Gardens and just had to find a place to let my emotions go. To be told you have cancer at 20 is a big shock.”

Warning over dodgy parking ‘fines’ By Goya Dmytryshchak A Hobsons Bay councillor is warning people about bogus parking fines being emailed to unsuspecting recipients after receiving one herself. Cr Colleen Gates last week received a bogus infringement notice for $70.14, emailed to her work address. “City Council” cited the offence as parking “longer than indicated” without specifying a location, according to the email. “It just came into my email inbox out of
nowhere,” Cr Gates said. “I looked at it and I thought, ‘Where would I have got a parking fine?’ “And then I was like, ‘I don’t get parking fines’.” Cr Gates reminded people that councils could not link a person’s car to their email address. She urged people to delete any such emails and not click on any links in case of malware. The forgery contained a number of errors, making it easier to detect. “You could see that there’s some flaws in it
because it doesn’t name the council, and since when would you get a parking fine on May 30 and then it tells you to pay by June 5,” Cr Gates said. “Then, when they have referred to the legislation, the legislation was written with some capital letters and some small letters.” Ironically, the fake fine arrived on the back of the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission’s Scams Awareness Week. People can find out how to protect themselves and report scams via the ACCC’s Scamwatch service.

Off to a flying start An exhibition developed by Boeing and NASA will be launched at Scienceworks on Saturday. Above and Beyond: The Ultimate Interactive Flight Exhibition uses immersive experiences to explore flight and aerospace innovation, design and technology. It premiered at the National Air and Space Museum in Washington DC and has travelled the world from Dubai to London and Singapore. The exhibition includes a 180-degree theatre presentation, a simulated space elevator ride, a challenge to design and test a supersonic fighter jet in a virtual high-speed flying competition, and an avatar experience demonstrating bird flight. ““Above Above and Beyond allows visitors to be immersed in the wonders of flight in a hands-on way,” said Mike Bunker, managing director of Boeing Aerostructures Australia based in Fishermans Bend. “It’s an inspirational must-see for Australia’s budding engineers,
scientists, pilots and explorers and anyone else who loves aerospace.” NASA’s Jaiwon Shin said the exhibition celebrated the innovation that made flight possible during the last century. “The tenacity of the human spirit couldn’t be more evident than in its never-ending quest to understand and explore the world around it,” he said. Scienceworks general manager Jonathan Shearer said aerospace engineering was an example of how technology could change lives. “We believe people can use creativity, science and technology to solve the world’s problems,” he said. VU scales up teaching model Victoria University students will be the first in Australia to graduate with a degree earned under a radical new model. The university is moving to a Swedish teaching model that scraps multiple semester-long courses in favour of four-week intensive blocks of a single subject. The model has been trialled with first-year students this year and will roll out to all second-year subjects next year. It will run university-wide from 2020. While students have identified positives for the learning model, warnings have been sounded over the speed of the introduction and the potential impact on academic research and community links with the western suburbs. First-year biomedicine student Maddy Carrick said she was attracted to the model while tossing up where she would continue her studies. “I really like this idea of intensive learning,” she said. “I wasn’t so sure at the start, it was really full-on, but it has really grown on me and I love it now.” Ms Carrick, a scholarship student, said each class builds a foundation for the next and the format also helps avoid clashes with assignments. “Most people I have spoken with really like it, particularly the class sizes, there are no massive lectures,” she said. “I have friends who go to other unis and they just don’t show up for the lectures, here you get to really know the people you are with.”

One drawback was the changing timetable making work shifts difficult to schedule more than four weeks ahead. Victoria University introduced the model to improve pass rates and reduce the high number of students dropping out in their first year. While pass rates, scores and retention are all up, concerns have been raised about the effect of a more teaching-intensive focus on academic research. National Tertiary Education Union VU branch president Paul Adams said he was one of dozens of academic staff sacked and replaced with teaching staff. “There is a difference between having a teaching college in the west and having a university,” he said. “Having a more teaching-intensive model means a lot of these community projects and research projects that have a positive impact in the west will not happen.” Dr Adams said many staff would also have preferred a more gradual introduction of the new model.

Funding boost to fight violence By Benjamin Millar Eradicating the attitudes and behaviours that underpin violence against women in the western suburbs is the focus of a new $400,000 funding package. Prevention of Family Violence Minister Natalie Hutchins visited Victoria University’s Footscray campus last Wednesday to announce a range of grants, including $110,000 to help VU support women living on university campuses speak out against violence. The project will be led by VU academic Tim Corney, working with students, student
organisations and college administrators. VU vice-chancellor Peter Dawkins said all forms of violence against women are preventable, but not without confronting the attitudes, behaviours, structures and systems that drive it. “The university sector can play a critical role in changing attitudes and behaviours to encourage a culture of respect and equality,” he said. “Our project will lead by example and is supported by key stakeholders in the university residential sector.” A further $140,000 has gone to HealthWest Partnerships to work with male VU students
on tackling the drivers of family violence. The project will help young men from diverse backgrounds develop prevention strategies in their communities. The project is based on the Working Together With Men project already run in Brimbank. Women’s Information and Referral Exchange received $100,000 to train volunteers to carry out conversations in the community on gender equality issues. Wathaurong Aboriginal Co-Operative and IPC Health will receive $50,000 to engage Elders and ‘Elders in training’ to address the drivers of family violence in the community.
Ms Hutchins said ending family violence means addressing gender inequality. “We’re using every means necessary to stop violence before it starts,” she said. “To end family violence for good we need to not only invest in ideas that are proven to work – but also invest in new, evidence-informed approaches to primary prevention.” Footscray MP Marsha Thomson said the funded organisations fit the bill, using new approaches to tackle family violence. “This funding will build on the intensive work already under way to prevent family violence in the west.”
The father of all crimes How did a father and son from North Queensland become Australia’s most wanted men? The eight-year manhunt for convicted murderers Gino and Mark Stocco may have come to a dramatic end in 2015, but their arrest left many unanswered questions for Footscray journalist Nino Bucci. While the long arm of the law finally caught up with the pair, charging them with 34 crimes including the murder of 68-year-old Rosario Cimone, Bucci hit the road to dig out the back-story to their brazen crime-spree. “Looking at the nine days between when they shot at the cops and were arrested, I thought it was just such a really bizarre story,” Bucci said. “The more you looked at it the more questions you had, so I thought it was worth dedicating a couple of years to exploring those questions.” Criss-crossing rural Queensland, New South
Wales and Victoria to retrace the path of the restless outlaws, Bucci had plenty of time to think about the research he was collecting for what was to become a true-crime book, The Stoccos: Like Father, Like Son. Bucci spent the long drives trying to understand the mindset of the father and son, a task made difficult by their refusal to be interviewed and years spent living off the grid. Yet he did manage to piece together parts of the jigsaw by speaking with dozens of people whose lives they had touched in some way. “It’s clear they did have some belief systems we associate with bushranger ideals,” he said. Tunnel group a PR stunt: MP By Benjamin Millar Resident groups fighting flow-on effects from the West Gate Tunnel project are questioning the value of a new consultation group. Star Weekly last week revealed the state government was setting up a Corridor Study Group to discuss issues in the Millers Road and Williamstown Road corridors, where thousands more trucks will flow each day once the project is completed. Community representatives will be invited to join a working group that will make recommendations to a steering group chaired by VicRoads. Don’t Destroy Millers Road member Tammy Jones said the group welcomed the opportunity to tackle some of the issues it was facing, but had concerns about the process. “We are happy to see the government finally acknowledge the flawed Environment Effects Statement process and approval that has led to contracts signed without properly assessing the impacts on local residents and businesses across the inner west communities,” she said. “Our confidence in the process behind this project is rock bottom, however we will continue to push for projects that will help our communities.” Williamstown Crossing Group (WCG) co-ordinator Lorenzo de Falco said the group has been concerned for some time about the combined traffic impacts of the level crossing removals on Kororoit Creek Road and Ferguson Street, the West Gate Tunnel tollway and associated truck bans.

Trio face armed robbery charges By Goya Dmytryshchak Two men and a woman have been charged with armed robberies at Altona North and Williamstown late last year. Detectives from the Altona North Embona Armed Robbery Taskforce swooped on a Newport house early last Wednesday morning, arresting two men and a woman in relation to a robbery at a McDonald’s restaurant last November and a bottle shop in Douglas Parade in December.
It is alleged two bandits wielding a gun and a knife entered the McDonald’s restaurant at the corner of Blackshaws and Millers roads in Altona North at 1.50am on Sunday, November 26. Two men brandishing firearms allegedly entered a bottle shop in Douglas Parade, Williamstown, shortly after 10pm on Saturday, December 23, pointing them at the attendant. Cash was stolen in both robberies. A white Toyota Corolla believed to have been used in connection with the armed robberies
was seized from the Newport property on Wednesday. Police could be seen carrying bags of evidence from the house. A 26-year-old man has been charged with two counts of armed robbery and remanded. A second man, 22, has been charged with armed robbery and theft and was bailed. A woman, 25, was charged with two counts of armed robbery and was also bailed. All three, from Newport, will appear at Melbourne Magistrates Court on August 22.

Cop trades uniforms When the whistle blows, Amber Rawson will be in hot pursuit of her target – but this time it won’t be a crook on the run. The Footscray senior constable will trade her police boots for football boots this month as she laces up for the Australian Police rugby union team. Consisting of the cream of rugby-playing police women from across Australia, the side will travel to Canberra to tackle a team from the Australian Defence Force. Senior Constable Rawson said she was one of four Victorian members chosen for the squad. “The defence team has invited us up there,” she said. Senior Constable Rawson, who plays hooker, spent 14 years playing soccer before being poached by a rugby team. She is currently in her third season playing with Power House, one of the oldest rugby union clubs in Victoria, after four years of playing the game in Townsville.
“Rugby is a very technical game and a very physical game,” she said. “I love both the physical and strategic side … I’m still learning stuff. Our Power House team is quite a small team and we play against teams that are much bigger, so you have to stay focused mentally and physically.” Senior Constable Rawson said her rugby and policing fed into each other and that the game was a great way to stay fit. She said recognition of women in previously male-dominated sport had come a long way since she was younger, particularly in light of the success of the AFLW competition. “I wish it was like that when I was a bit younger,” she said. “They’ve got so many opportunities and so much support and different pathways.” The match will be held at the ADF’s Duntroon base in Canberra on June 22. MY PLACE Acclaimed author Jane Rawson, recently longlisted for the 2018 Miles Franklin Literary Award, loves her market shopping, Ethiopian coffee and other Footscray rituals. She speaks with Benjamin Millar. What’s your connection with Footscray? I moved to Footscray in 2011. I used to live in Yarraville, but the Victorian government was going to build a road through my house, so I had to leave. I came to Footscray because it was heaps more interesting, there were so many different things to do here. What do you love about living there? I can’t think of any other places in Melbourne or anywhere that are like Footscray. Footscray is really special. There are all kinds of different people who live here, and all kinds of different things to do. Everyone’s a little bit confused all the time and I really like that because I’m frequently confused.
My favourite thing in Footscray is Footscray Library. It has pretty much every book I ever want to read and it’s all for free. My other favourite things in Footscray are Littlefoot bar, they make good cocktails, and Konjo is my favourite African restaurant. The people who own Konjo are really nice, really friendly and they make extremely delicious food. That’s where I go and get my coffee after doing my shopping at Footscray market on Saturday mornings, because Abdul makes really good coffee. I like the little park down by Footscray station. That park is really nice in summer, it’s just a kind of little oasis of greenness in Footscray, which is otherwise not so green.

What are your favourite local places?
Mostly they like to build apartment buildings on any green space in Footscray, but that bit somehow escaped. You can take a thermos of margaritas down there in the park and drink it and nobody knows. I also like the Night Heron, they have really good experimental music
shows and sometimes poetry readings. What can you tell us about your published books? The first one I wrote was Formaldehyde. I wrote
it while I was living in San Francisco because my friend was just starting this thing called National Novel Writing Month where you try to write 50,000 words in one month, which I thought was a crazy idea and I wanted to do it. So I wrote the first draft of Formaldehyde, which got published in 2015. A Wrong Turn at the Office of Unmade Lists is set in the western suburbs of Melbourne and is about a post-apocalyptic dystopian scenario. It made me want to write a non-fiction book about climate change, so I’ve also done that, The Handbook, on how to adapt your own life to extreme weather, droughts, flood and depression. My most recent book is From the Wreck, which is based on my family history but also has an alien. It’s set in 19th century South Australia. The alien looks like an octopus but it also changes shape all the time. She’s lost, her planet got destroyed and she needs a new planet to live in. People have been shortlisting it for awards, it was longlisted for a Miles Franklin and it won an Aurealis Award for science fiction. What’s something people may be surprised to learn about you? When I go out into the countryside and I see a lot of stars it kind of freaks me out, there’s too many of them. I once helped resuscitate a guy who was almost dead from a heroin overdose. I won second place for my Anzac biscuits at the Melbourne Show – I’ve never made Anzac biscuits as good as that again.

CHOCAHOLICS What is your all-time favourite chocolate bar? What is your least favourite chocolate bar? Until I posted these two questions on the Food Bytes Facebook page, I hadn’t realised it was such a polarising topic. When I was a child, my dad used to buy me a White Knight bar every Sunday when he popped into the local milk bar to grab his copy of the Sunday Observer Observer. When I opened up the kids’ section in the middle of the paper, there was the chocolate bar staring back at me. The joy of working my little jaw around that chewy slab of peppermint coated in milk chocolate, while poring over the kiddie crosswords, is one of my favourite childhood memories.

FB: How would you rate yourself as a cook? AP: I think my cooking skills are fair, however my boys, Andrew and Woody, would say my skills were poor! Haha … so I would rate myself as a four out of 10, they wouldn’t give me a score. FB: What is your signature dish? AP: Eskimo pies, Golden Gaytimes and Bubble-O Bill ice creams – a fantastic and quite individual dessert. FB: If you could only have one more meal, what would it be? AP: If I could have one last meal it would be roast lamb, roast potato, pumpkin, parsnip, fresh peas, broccoli and beans … and lots of very, very thick Gravox to complete and washed down with a glass or two or three of pinot noir. FB: What is your favourite TV food show and who is your favourite TV food person? AP: I don’t watch food TV shows therefore I don’t have a favourite food person. FB: What is your favourite food? AP: My favourite food is roast lamb or roast beef with thick Gravox. I also like the supermarket brand of spaghetti bolognese. I have a Cup of Soup every morning. I am allergic to shellfish but the baked crab shell at Silks restaurant at Crown is brilliant and I could have a couple of them (though I haven’t). I also love a really hot Thai red or green vegetable curry (though no tofu). I don’t have this often as I hate the after effects of garlic – yuk! FB: What is your favourite drink? AP: My favourite drink is Diet Coke and Rose – not mixed together! I did once try Diet Coke and red wine. It happened by accident. I was drinking Diet Coke from a red wine glass and the waiter filled it up with red wine, my mistake. So I took the challenge and tasted the new drink and it wasn’t that bad actually! FB: Which five people would most like to invite to dinner? AP: I would love to invite Princess Grace or Diana, Benazir Bhutto, Kate Langbroek, Jane Kennedy and my sister, Jane. However, the White Knight does not seem to attract the controversy its much-maligned cousin, the Turkish Delight, does. While many people share my dislike for this kind of chocolate, dozens more will jump to its defence, telling me I don’t know what I’m missing out on. Cherry Ripes, Violet Crumbles, Bounty, Boost, Kit Kats, Flakes, Aeros and the old Scorched Peanut Bar all rated a mention among people’s favourites in my little straw poll. But what was most interesting to me was seeing how many still miss and yearn for the old Pollywaffle. No wonder Cadbury came up with the Favourites box. There’s no pleasing everyone!

Any decision by political parties to remove negative gearing will put an economic blowtorch on the design and project management of renovation projects, Robert Caulfield, architect and director of Archicentre believes. “The existing negative gearing arrangements have historically provided a safety net for investor-renovators,” he said, “Protecting them from budget blowouts, due to buying a property with unknown faults or failing to plan, budget and manage their renovation projects.” He said when renovating, a substantial amount of money, time and energy is invested into what’s invariably a complex project. “This can lead to a waste of funds, budget blowouts or major building faults.” Mr Caulfield said common traps for renovators without a plan of action include: • Purchasing a ‘renovator’s delight’ with hidden major structural problems • Having plans drawn up before deciding on a final design, leading to costly variations • Failing to check builder’s registration and indemnity insurance • Undertaking work that does not conform to local council planning controls • Placing themselves at risk with an unsafe renovation site • Failing to recognise the dangerous presence of asbestos • Paying up front only to find that work is left half finished • Having difficulty co-ordinating trades and materials, which leads to cost blowouts. Mr Caulfield said dealing with common traps, combined with tight budgets, will become increasingly important if negative gearing is removed and leaves renovators without the traditional financial buffer. SPORT Magic pulls something out of the box Altona Magic has clawed its way back to the National Premier League 2 west summit. The Magic was back to their menacing best in a 4-1 mauling of Melbourne City at Paisley Park on Saturday evening. Goran Lozanovski’s team returned to top spot after ladder leader Moreland Zebras suffered a shock loss to neighbours Moreland City in a local derby. Altona had no such trouble, powering to a commanding win on the back of a second half goal blitz. The Magic took the lead through Jon McShane in the 21st minute, but Yasin Nur found an equaliser nine minutes later. It was all Altona in the second half as it piled on three unanswered goals through Ben Litfin, Melvin Becket and David Trajanoski. The Magic celebrated their second consecutive
win and third in the past four games. It went some way to erasing the disappointment of their FFA Cup exit mid-week. The Magic missed out on the national round of 32 after losing 2-0 to Northcote City at Paisley Park on Wednesday night. Skipper Danny Dixon scored both of Northcote’s goals. Altona’s sole focus will turn to the NPL 2 west, where they will be striving for promotion. The Magic will square off with Werribee City in a western suburbs derby at Galvin Park Reserve on Sunday. IN THE DOGHOUSE The sight of the Western Bulldogs CEO Ameet Bains plunging head first into the podium at the Past Players’ luncheon last Saturday was not on the agenda but it certainly got everyone’s attention. Thankfully no injuries were incurred, just some slightly dented pride, but nothing else. Ameet gathered his thoughts and told the group of the exciting developments coming for the club at the Whitten Oval in the future. Unfortunately, the on-field performance was not as inspiring, but that’s football. The new facilities and changes at the club’s home won’t be built in a day or a week, and neither will the team. I criticised the football media last week for its vulture mentality, but clubs must also look within and weed out the negative element constantly referred to as ‘insiders’ in article after article. These people do not deserve to be employed, as their loyalty is clearly up for sale.

Barry Round breezed back into town last week and spoke at the Bulldogs function about his life in the sun on the Gold Coast. The 1981 Brownlow medallist has been on the coast for a decade and enjoys a swim and walk every morning. Roundy’s era played hard on and off the ground and enjoyed themselves. Teen earns state cap By Lance Jenkinson When Paris Vasta launches into the pool in Singapore later this month, she will do so safe in the knowledge that she could not have done any more in her preparation for her first overseas competition. According to her dad and coach Alex, Vasta is a workaholic inside and outside the pool, dedicating countless hours to her swimming training, including nine pool sessions and two gym sessions a week, and just as many hours outside the pool completing her year 12 studies. Vasta, a member of the Laverton Swimming Club, has been selected to represent Victoria at the Singapore National Championships from June 21-23 and she can’t wait for the experience of her first overseas trip, not only as a competitor, but also as a traveller. “I’m really looking forward to it,” Vasta said. “It will be my first ever overseas flight, let alone competition, and I’m really excited to gain some international racing experience that will definitely help me carry forward with my swimming career.”
Vasta has been in the water for as long as she can remember. She starting swimming before even blowing out her first birthday candle, at just eight months, and by the time she was seven she began competitive swimming. By the age of eight, Vasta started dreaming of representing Australia at an Olympic Games, a dream she still holds 10 years later. Vasta’s year has already turned heads in the swimming fraternity. In February, she competed in the Commonwealth Games trials on the Gold Coast, featuring on national television. She made the final in her best event, the 200-metre breaststroke, while coming 10th in the 100-metre breaststroke and 13th in the 50-metre breaststroke. “It was an amazing experience and really built up my motivation and determination to reach my goals,” Vasta said. Vasta took the Australian Age Swimming Championships by storm in Sydney. She won gold in the 200-metre breaststroke and silver in the 100-metre breaststroke. Her success in Sydney saw her get a call-up
for Victoria’s trip to Singapore. Alex Vasta is understandably proud of his daughters – his other daughter Cartier is also a swimming star, coming 11th in the 100-metre breaststroke and 14th in the 200-metre breaststroke, both with PB times, at the Australian Age Swimming Championships – but he also sees the bigger picture. Through his coaching with Laverton Swimming Club, he wants to help build up the west’s reputation for the development of swimming stars and wants to see less talent drain to the clubs across town. “We’re trying to keep these kids engaged with the sport they love and represent our community moving forward,” Alex said. “Most of the talented kids from our community end up leaving and going across the Yarra as they are perceived to be better clubs. “We’ve made a commitment that we will support each and every family that come through and to keep them engaged and to stay in the west. “My dream is to have an Olympian come out of here one day.”

Depth tested, but Jets uncover a new set of stars The question for the Western Jets was who would rise in the absence of their X-factor. With captain and star onballer Xavier O’Halloran being “managed” on the back of a heavy load due to school football and Jets’ commitments this season and a view of keeping him fresh for his Vic Metro representation at the under-18 national championships, there was a chance for other players to step up and play starring roles. In the Jets’ seven-point win over Bendigo Pioneers at the Williamstown Cricket Ground on Saturday, it was one player from each area of the ground – half-forward/wingman Darcy Cassar, midfielder Connor Thar and defender Buku Khamis – who rose to the occasion. Expect more Jets players to thrust their names into the spotlight in the coming weeks
as the Jets will be without up to six of their Vic Metro representatives, including O’Halloran, Khamis, Emerson Jeka, Stefan Radovanovic, Daly Andrews and Zak Butters. “We decided to manage Xavier’s load because he has played a number of games for school as well,” Jets coach Torin Baker said. “Fact is, we’re going to lose Xavier and a number of other players over the national championships period, so we’re going to have to have players step up.” It was a much tougher assignment than most would have envisaged for the Western Jets against one-win Bendigo. The Jets led most of the way, but it was always by uncomfortable margins. Baker lauded the Pioneers for making it hard on his team and was disappointed by some
of his own side’s execution and discipline at times. “We probably struggled with the style of play they had,” Baker said. “We got out to a lead a couple of times but they were able to drag us back.” Cassar had a huge influence over the result. The bottom-age player from Keilor spent most of his day across half-forward, recording 25 disposals due to his high work rate. “I thought that was probably the best TAC Cup game that he’s played,” Baker said. “He was very good the whole day, one of the players who was really clean and good with his skill execution across the four quarters. Khamis has hit a purple patch just ahead of his Vic Metro commitments. The AFL Academy graduate has been a star across
half-back the past two games and saved the Jets on countless occasions with his intercept marking. “His best game for the year was probably last week, but again he was someone who, down back, intercepted the ball really well and provided us with a lot of drive,” Baker said. “We had him down for about nine marks, but he took five of those in the first quarter off opposition kicks, so he stood up when Bendigo were really pushing.” Thar did as Thar does, only this week, he thrived with the added responsibility of the captaincy. Big Jets crew for Metro By Lance Jenkinson A six-pack of Western Jets stars have been selected in the final Vic Metro squad to take part in the 2018 NAB AFL under-18 national championships. The competition will begin on Saturday with the Big V crossing the Nullarbor to face Western Australia in the opener at the new Optus Stadium in Perth. The high representation of Jets in the squad is a reflection of long-term dedication to the development of this talented crop of players and the TAC Cup form of the side, which is sitting third with six wins from eight matches. Understandably, Jets coach Torin Baker is a happy man. “It’s a reflection that the region is developing good talent,” he said. “It’s hotly contested [getting into the Vic Metro squad], so now it’s over to those players to produce their best. “We’d expect there will be a bit of rotation across those four games, but some of our boys may play all four.” Daly Andrews is the bolter out of the Jets’ pack. Andrews, a Werribee Districts product with an athletics background, worked his way on to the radar of the Jets in the second half of his bottom-age season, but it didn’t take long for the wingman to impress. “We saw him play a bit of local footy in the middle of last year and invited him to a July game,” Baker said. “From that we just thought we’ve got to get him in straight away. “He had an excellent pre-season … and his first few games on the wing, in particular, caught the eyes of the selectors.” Xavier O’Halloran, out of St Bernard’s, is held in the highest regard at the Jets and has taken his game to another level since taking on the captaincy this season. “He provides a lot for us and is our best-performed player to date,” Baker said. “Hopefully, he gets multiple opportunities at the championships because I think his form is equal to other inside mids in the competition.” Stefan Radovanovic, another gun youngster out of the Keilor football factory, has produced the most standout games for the Jets this season and is the reigning club best-and-fairest. The midfielder enters the championships under an injury cloud though after hurting a shoulder on Saturday. “When he has played with us, he’s been very good,” Baker said. Zak Butters played what could be his last game for the Jets on Saturday. The boy from Darley will play for Vic Metro and immediately go in for shoulder surgery in order to be ready for an AFL pre-season should he be drafted. “He’s someone that has just given himself every opportunity to make the Vic Metro team for a start and hopefully from there an AFL career,” Baker said. “His shoulder popped out in November, but it was deemed that he could play this season 46 MARIBYRNONG & HOBSONS BAY STAR WEEKLY \ JUNE 6, 2018

with some rehab. He’s done that and he’s got through quite well, but in order to be right for an AFL pre-season, he should have surgery in July and that allows him some recovery time.” Buku Khamis, a St Albans product, takes on Vic Metro duty in the midst of the best form of his TAC Cup career. Khamis has been a dominant force aerially down in defence for the Jets and an efficient user of the ball. “He can play as that key defender or even third tall defender,” Baker said. “His marking is his strength and he’s a really nice kick of the footy.”
Emerson Jeka is the only bottom-ager of the six Jets chosen. The talented key position player from Altona Juniors has long been earmarked as a player to watch. “Anyone who stands 198 centimetres and has his athleticism is something people are going to take note of,” Baker said. “He had an excellent under-16s championships last year, but most bottom-agers only play a game [with Vic Metro under-18] to get a taste of it. So I think for Emerson, if he got one game out of the championships, that would be a good result for him.”
Altona suffered its first setback of the Western Region Football League division 1 campaign, losing to Werribee Districts by 49 points in the top-of-the-table clash at Soldiers Reserve on Saturday. The Vikings were competitive in the first half, but Werribee Districts pulled away with 10 goals to four after half-time. Patrick Rose kicked four for Altona, taking his season tally to 30 in seven games. Rose is leading the competition’s goalkicking, one clear of Deer Park full-forward Jase Perkins. Trent Rafferty, Thomas Szanyi and Luke Goetz were the other standouts for the Vikings. Altona has now ceded top spot to Werribee Districts. The Vikings will be looking to strike back when they play bottom side Wyndhamvale after the break. Spotswood has strung together three consecutive victories. The Woodsmen powered to a 52-point win over St Albans at Kings Park Reserve on Saturday. Brandon Walshe was named best on ground, while Dylan Callard hit the scoreboard with three goals. The win has consolidated Spotswood’s fourth spot. In division 2, Newport Power got the better of Parkside by 26 points at Bryan Martyn Oval. Munir El Houli sparked the Power with five goals, while Youssef El Hawli kicked four. Yarraville-Seddon has top spot going into the break after squeezing the life out of Manor Lakes in a 53-point win. The Eagles kept the Storm to just three goals in an impressive defensive display. Corey Salvador kicked three goals for Yarraville-Seddon to take his season tally to a league-best 29 goals. North Footscray enjoyed a 48-point win over Albanvale, while West Footscray lost by 71 points to Point Cook.
