Drugs, booze battle plan A crackdown on bottleshops, stronger partnerships with health services and consideration of a supervised injecting trial are recommended in Maribyrnong council’s new alcohol and drug strategy. Maribyrnong’s Alcohol and Other Drugs (AOD) Policy 2017-2021, adopted last week, outlines the council’s overall role in managing harm caused by the misuse of alcohol and other drugs. The policy notes heroin use in Footscray remains relatively high, but that alcohol and tobacco cause the most drug-related harm. “At-risk groups include people experiencing
homelessness, unemployment, people with mental illness, young people, middle-aged and older men, indigenous people and those from other culturally diverse backgrounds,” the policy states. Alcohol consumption and alcohol-related ambulance call-out rates in Maribyrnong are on the rise and above metropolitan averages, according to the policy. Drug-related ambulance call-out rates are higher than average in Maribyrnong for most drug types, including heroin, crystal meth, cannabis and benzodiazepine. The policy builds upon the Illicit Drug Strategy developed in the early 2000s, when street-based heroin use and dealing escalated

in Footscray and other Melbourne hotspots. Feedback on a draft of the policy raised concerns about alcohol consumption and litter, drink-driving and the number of businesses selling alcohol in Braybrook. VicHealth encouraged greater monitoring of the impact of concentrated packaged liquor licensed outlets, while the Footscray Traders Association spoke of the positive role of licensed venues and the night-time economy. In response to a push for the council to take a more active role in advocating a supervised injecting facility in Footscray, the policy notes the substantial recent change in the state’s position regarding the two-year trial of a Medical Supervised Injecting Centre (MSIC) in

Despite a drop in adult smoking rates to just 16 per cent of residents, tobacco smoking is the single most preventable cause of ill health and death in Maribyrnong. Cr Martin Zakharov said the policy was about finding the right way to help people. “I remember the days when we had serious issues with drugs … I think in general we’re going in the right direction,” he said.

Police investigate hate posters By Benjamin Millar Police are examining CCTV footage of neo-Nazi stickers and posters being plastered over Victoria University’s Footscray Park campus. Homophobic material and “Nazi Youth” stickers with swastikas, all featuring the website address of neo-Nazi group Antipodean Resistance, were pasted in a seemingly co-ordinated blitz on university campuses in Melbourne, Ballarat and Bendigo on
Sunday to coincide with the start of semester. The incident closely follows an outcry over anti-Jewish flyers dropped into letter boxes in Footscray. A VU spokeswoman said the university has a zero tolerance to racism and campus security quickly removed the material. “We strongly condemn these actions and are working with police to find those responsible,” she said. “They have reviewed the available CCTV footage and handed this over to police.”
The spokeswoman said VU’s diverse community is made up of more than 90 different cultures and the university supports the national ‘Racism.It.Stops.With. Me’ campaign. “We will continue to take action against racism whenever it occurs.” Anti-Defamation Commission chairman Dr Dvir Abramovich said Antipodean Resistance is driven by racism and white supremacy. “This latest chilling incident is stark reminder that neo-Nazis are amongst us, and
are a serious threat to our safety and to our way of life,” he said. “We, as a community, and the police, must tackle this rising tide of radicalism before it spreads even further.” Dr Abramovich called on political and religious leaders to unite in calling out a “dramatic upsurge” in far-right activity. A police spokesman said Victoria Police Security Intelligence Unit is aware of the activity. “As it’s an active investigation it would be inappropriate to comment further.”

Seddon citizens embrace festival joined by Mark Ferrie of RocKwiz Orkestra and Models fame and a four-piece horn section. Seddon Community Group’s Stephen Los said the festival offered a true representation of what Melbourne’s inner-west was really about. “I’ve been lucky enough to grow up in one of the kindest, most inclusive, diverse and eclectic neighbourhoods going around,” he said. “Seddon Festival is an expression of just that. “The inner-west really is the place to be and I can’t wait to show everyone why I’m so proud of my community.”
With sunny skies predicted, up to 10,000 people are expected to turn out for the event, which will run from 11am until 5pm. “There’s something for every festival-goer, for the young and not so young,” Mr Los said. “From market stalls to dancing, arts, crafts, food and wine, the kid zone, and much more – not to mention the crowd favourite, the annual waiters race.” Further details: seddonfestival.com.au.

The Maribyrnong Defence Site will be sold on the open market after the Department of Defence failed to find a suitable buyer by tender. The federal government last year announced it would sell the contaminated 127-hectare site, scuppering years of negotiations with Development Victoria, the state government’s development arm. But more than six months later the sale is moving from open tender to a “market sounding” stage, designed to gather development industry feedback ahead of the site’s sale. Federal Minister for Defence Marise Payne, Minister for Urban Infrastructure and Cities Paul Fletcher and Assistant Minister to the Treasurer Michael Sukkar issued a joint statement on Saturday stating the “unique development opportunity” is large enough to develop up to 6000 new homes – twice the density flagged by Development Victoria. A fact sheet prepared for the sale stated the site “is heavily contaminated” as a result of its former use as an explosives factory. A cocktail of chemicals has been found at the site and decontamination – tipped to cost up to $500 million – could take five years. “The majority of the contaminants across the site comprises of more common contaminants like asbestos, fuel residue and heavy metals,” the fact sheet stated. Defence is seeking up to a dozen interested parties to take part in market sounding in March and April, then moving into an “expressions of interest” stage.

Brooklyn tip audit call
Council backs recording bid
By Goya Dmytryshchak A state government MP is calling for an investigation into a Brooklyn tip operator given a $500,000 taxpayer-funded cheque to improve its waste processing. The call comes after Western Land Reclamation, operated by Sunshine Groupe, was criticised for poor landfill management practices by the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal following proceedings initiated by the Environment Protection Authority. “WLR’s practices have not demonstrated an adequate regard to either the licence conditions or to industry accepted standard landfill management practices in Victoria,” VCAT stated in its decision to amend the tip’s licence. Speaking in state Parliament last week, Williamstown MP Wade Noonan called for an audit on $500,000 received by the Sunshine Groupe in 2012-13. Mr Noonan said the previous Liberal government had “handed a Sunshine Groupe subsidiary, Action Recovery and Recycling in Brooklyn, a taxpayer-funded cheque for $500,000 to improve their processing”. He said he would “write to the Minister for Energy, Environment and Climate Change and request that a full regulatory audit be conducted on this business and investigate whether the $500,000 was appropriately spent”. EPA chief executive Nial Finegan said WLR had routinely appealed against the environmental watchdog’s attempts to make licence amendments, enforce remedial notices and penalty infringements. The Sunshine Groupe’s Tom and Christian Buxton told Star Weekly they would not appeal the latest VCAT decision. When asked for comment, they forwarded

and, always, respecting the environment,” the letter stated. “The $500,000 we received from the state government grant you also referred to has been added to over $8,500,000 the Sunshine Groupe has invested to create a state-of-the-art facility to process and recycle commercial and industrial waste.”
Maribyrnong council meetings could be recorded and shared online as part of a drive for greater transparency. Cr Mia McGregor used last week’s council meeting to move that the council prepare a policy to govern the recording of council meetings and arrange for the audio recording of meetings to be shared via the council’s website. “This is about transparency and community engagement,” she said. “This is something I have been working on in the background for the past 18 months. “Whilst the minutes of the council meeting provide an accurate recollection of the resolution of the meetings, it doesn’t usually reflect the level of detailed discussion and debate.” Cr Gina Huynh said the move would help bring local government in line with its state and federal counterparts. “It’s important to cater to everybody’s needs, especially those who can’t come for one reason or another,” she said. Cr Martin Zakharov said the move was overdue and that the council should even consider recording video of meetings. Cr Catherine Cumming said she supported the move. “This is becoming affordable, this is becoming quite easy to do,” she said. She called for greater protections of councillors in line with the parliamentary privilege enjoyed in state and federal governments. The motion was passed unanimously. Benjamin Millar

Fine mess cleared up By Goya Dmytryshchak An Altona Meadows resident has successfully contested a $95 fine for parking within three metres of a dividing line outside the Altona Senior Citizen’s Centre. John Dawes, whose wife had parked at the time of the fine, said a ‘No Parking’ sign should be installed in that particular part of Sargood Street – between Queen Street and Esplanade. “What confuses you in this busy part of Sargood Street is the number of clearly marked parking signs indicating the restrictions – where you can legally park or not – but not where my wife was booked, as it’s missing a parking sign,” Mr Dawes said. “A ‘No Parking’ sign needs to be installed there, otherwise unsuspecting people will continue to park, as it’s a busy spot in a built-up area and drivers will continue to get booked.” Under Victoria’s road rules, unless there is a sign saying parking is permitted, drivers are not allowed to park or stop within three metres of a single continuous dividing line, a single continuous line to the left or right of a broken dividing line, or a dividing strip. “The same seems to be happening on the other side of Queen Street, in Sargood Street, directly opposite the Altona library,” Mr Dawes said. “We understand you are expected to be aware of all the road rules and adhere to them at all times. “We do not deny having committed this parking rule offence. We just want to highlight this parking anomaly in Sargood Street for the benefit of the community. “And the council needs to urgently re-evaluate the traffic management in this area.” A council spokeswoman on Monday said the fine had been withdrawn.

Police said a dog squad vehicle swerved to avoid a car being driven on the wrong side of the Western Freeway at Rockbank just before 12.30am. Police allege the car continued on the wrong side of Hopkins Road causing multiple vehicles to swerve to avoid a collision. The driver was eventually pulled over and arrested. He has been released pending summons and is expected to be charged with conduct endangering life and other traffic-related offences.

Survivor says thanks to rescuers By Goya Dmytryshchak Spotswood firefighter Damian Christy was this month reunited with a plumber he rescued after a trench wall collapsed last November. Whittlesea’s Brandon Grech, who has since become a father again, said he feared for his life during the painstaking 90-minute rescue when he was buried in mud up to his neck. Mr Christy, a former emergency trauma nurse, said space was so tight the pair had to perform a “slow and arduous” extraction. “Myself and him, we filled up a smaller bucket with just handfuls of dirt because there
wasn’t enough room for us to get a shovel or anything in,” Mr Christy said. “We needed to do it very delicately, so we actually put handfuls of dirt into a small bucket, which I then tipped over my shoulder into a bigger bucket. “We spoke about his kids and shared stories about my dogs. I tried to keep the mood as light as possible because if he started to panic, the rescue would have become much more difficult. “It was an overwhelming feeling when we first got him out. “And to see him down the track and see that he’s had a baby … it was really good to see
him in good spirits about the whole thing and getting back to work, so a good outcome. “Even though he was obviously pretty terrified at the time … he really stepped up and was really brave in that time, so he needs to be commended on how he acted.” Mr Grech said he wanted to visit Mr Christy and the crew to thank them for saving his life. “They are the reason why I’m still here today and I’m very thankful to them for what they did,” Mr Grech said. Altona Meadows’ Sam Young has been living with a secret he is finally sharing. “I never opened up about this to my friends and people close to me until a year ago,” the 31-year-old said. “It was a big thing for me growing up, and mum and I didn’t have many conversations – we had spoken about it two months ago, but the last time we had spoken about it I was 10.” It was then he learnt the man who had raised him wasn’t his biological father. The revelation came when his birth father was incarcerated. Young, who records under the name Samuelson, has made a documentary, Turn To, revealing the struggles associated with having never known his father. “He split up with my mum when she was three months pregnant,” said Young, who will release a single coinciding with the documentary’s premiere in April.
“I thought I’d start a documentary because I think there’s a lot of people in my situation who haven’t met their dad and I think it’s something we don’t really talk about. “I think this subject is like – I call it a hidden cancer – where not many people talk about it, but I think it’s massive worldwide. “The documentary is about reaching out to people. I want people who are in my position to be able to talk about it and to just say that it’s OK if you don’t know your mum or your dad.” Turn To will be screened at Yarraville’s Sun Theatre on April 6 at 7pm. Duty calls in quake city’s rubble By Goya Dmytryshchak Seven years after the devastation of the Christchurch earthquake, Sergeant Victor Velthuis can still vividly recall the “massive extent of the damage. Sergeant Velthuis, from Search and Rescue at Williamstown, was among about 130 Victorian officers sent to New Zealand in what was the state’s first and, to date, only major international police deployment. Victoria Police last week marked the seventh anniversary of the Christchurch earthquake that killed 185 people on February 22, 2011, after hitting a city already weakened by an earlier quake in September, 2010.

When Sergeant Velthuis arrived, less than half of the 172 bodies eventually recovered had been found. He was sworn in as a special constable to have temporary jurisdiction in New Zealand. “I went over with three others two days beforehand as a pre-deployment group, he said. “The whole city was in lockdown – obviously the whole city was crumbling, very dangerous and they were trying to keep people out. “The New Zealand police were working massive hours, so by the time we got there, they were very, very fatigued and they needed the support. “When we came, we were able to relieve their command elements and troops on the ground to give them a couple of days’ rest because their homes and the like were also in disarray.

Lessons for the future By Goya Dmytryshchak An independent co-educational school in Williamstown is doing away with traditional concepts such as mandated homework. The Lumineer Academy was launched this month at its Nelson Place pilot location at Customs House after securing a 10-year lease. The school has no public playground, with pupils using Commonwealth Reserve across the road and other public parks. There are 130 students from prep to year 7 enrolled at the school, formerly Sandridge School. Annual tuition fees start at $9600. The Luminaria Group’s co-founders include principal Sophie Fenton and Susan Wu. “The reality is that our current school systems are still iterating off a model that’s nearly 200 years old, designed for the first industrial age, where rote learning and compliance were standard,” said Ms Wu, whose four-year-old eldest son is enrolled at the academy. “We’re now living in a world where 65 per cent of primary aged students will work in jobs that haven’t even been invented.” Ms Fenton said the school’s homework-free, child co-created system had attracted interest from New Zealand, Canada, US, Great Britain and Singapore. “When children have a genuine connection to what they’re learning and understand the purpose and meaning of their work, you don’t have to mandate homework,” she said. “We’re grateful to, and love being part of the Williamstown community. We use public facilities instead of containing our children behind walled gardens because it’s important to equip children with agency, resilience and an understanding of what it means to be a productive, contributing citizen from the earliest years.”
Students at Lumineer Academy worked with Wildlife Victoria to make pouches for orphaned joeys. (Supplied)
The students work with local organisations including the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre, Eat Up, Wildlife Victoria, Green Cross Vets Williamstown and Dog Town Pet Store Williamstown. Another co-founder, former Melbourne Girls Grammar and Frankston High lead STEM
educator Shane Hunt, said the former Sam’s Boatshed restaurant had been transformed into a “makerspace” for primary-aged children. “The makerspace hosts a variety of workshop areas for projects in woodworking, textile crafts, agriculture, robotics, engineering and computing,” he said.

VCAT knocks back electronic signage A company’s bid to erect an 18-metre-high sign at Altona North has been rejected on appeal to the state’s planning tribunal. Twenty Four Outdoor Australia had unsuccessfully applied to Hobsons Bay council to erect an electronic “major promotion sign” at 4 Gordon Luck Avenue, about 26 metres from the Princes Freeway where about 145,000 vehicles pass by daily. The council refused to grant a permit based on fears of driver distraction and causing a danger to road users. Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal member Tracey Bilston-McGillen refused the sign on different grounds, saying it would be “too prominent and overbearing”. The planned sign had two electronic faces measuring six by nine metres. It would have been on a nine-metre high pole with LED lighting in hues of white, grey, purple and blue, with images changing every 40 seconds. Ms Bilston-McGillen said she had concerns with the proportions of the sign. “I find that the proposed sign will stand as a dominant element that will be visually imposing in its context … the sign panel is 54 square metres (each panel) and will be dominating,” she said. Digman earmarked for refresh By Goya Dmytryshchak
Stan celebrates his century A Footscray boy who went on to enjoy a stellar career at the Williamstown shipyards has celebrated his 100th birthday. Born in Albert Street on January 24, 1918, Stan Fox was the third of James and Myrtle Fox’s six children. Stan excelled in all forms of athletics, swimming, diving and cricket, also playing footy for Williamstown Football Club until his career was ended by an ACL injury. During World War II Stan joined the 6th Heavy Artillery Brigade, training as a gunner before being posted to Singapore in 1941-42. He was recalled home for his welding skills, vital for building ships, and was posted to the Williamstown Dockyard. Stan said he was forever grateful for the recall as his whole contingent was captured or killed by the Japanese in Singapore. Stan married Nancy Daw on December 16, 1944, moving to Newport. They had two children – Sandra and Darryl – and Stan now has six grandchildren and seven greatgrandchildren. After 59 years of marriage and a long illness, Nancy died in 2003. Stan moved to Bupa in Woodend in 2010 and wondered whether he would live long enough to see his beloved Bulldogs win a Premiership – a dream that came true in 2016.

A $5.7 million master plan for Newport’s Digman Reserve has been approved by Hobsons Bay council, opening the reserve up to evening and winter sport. The sporting ground is mainly used for cricket, Gellibrand Cricket Club being its primary tenant. Newport Digman Cricket Club and Williamstown Colts also use the 4.2-hectare reserve, which has four ovals, a pavilion and playground. The site is also popular among dog-walkers. Under the master plan, floodlighting will be installed to open up the reserve at night. Two full-size soccer pitches will be overlaid onto the cricket ovals in winter and Barnstoneworth United (senior) Soccer Club will be a new winter tenant. Hobsons Bay councillor Peter Hemphill said upgrades to the reserve would help address some of the demand for sport and recreation facilities in the municipality. “Some of the proposed improvements include upgraded sports field surfaces to allow for cricket in summer and soccer in winter, a renewed play-space area, new pavilion and additional car parking,” he said. “The master plan also provides more formal car parking a short distance away from the reserve to help minimise the impact on local residents. “If we move quickly on renewing the playing surfaces to allow the Barnstoneworth United Football Club to relocate to Digman Reserve, it will free up some use at J.T. Gray Reserve for football and soccer.”

The head of Gymnastics Victoria has leapt back to his roots during a visit to RecWest in Braybrook. Jamie Parsons, who grew up just around the corner from RecWest and went on to become an Australian football best and fairest winner at Braybrook Sporting Club, was back on home turf last week as he learnt more about RecWest’s newly launched YMCA Gymnastics program. The program includes PreGym, KinderFun and GymFun classes aimed at children of all abilities from ages one to nine years old. Classes are determined by age, with each program involving drills and skills appropriate for each age and experience level. RecWest YMCA general manager Gerald
Dixon said several of the classes are already nearing capacity, reflecting the quality of YMCA programs and the popularity of gymnastics as an active pursuit for young people. “Gymnastics is particularly positive as it promotes co-ordination, strength and agility, which are now widely recognised by parents as important foundation skills for children that promote lifelong involvement in sport and physical activity,” he said. Mr Dixon said the programs were supervised by fully trained and experienced instructors. Details: www.recwestbraybrook.ymca.org. au or 9311 3400. Benjamin Millar

Trafficker to appeal jail sentence By Benjamin Millar
A new chapter for African tales
(Nic Walker)
A convicted ice trafficker from Footscray has been granted leave to appeal his prison sentence. Ban Joo Teoh was sentenced in December 2016 to nine years’ imprisonment with a seven year non-parole period. The Court of Appeal heard that on August 30, 2015, co-accused Hon Pan Yip had landed at Perth Airport and was detected importing methamphetamine into Australia via Cognac bottles. A telephone intercept revealed a number of phone calls with Teoh, in which arrangements were made for Yip to deliver one of the Cognac bottles to Teoh. On September 11, 2015, Yip was arrested outside Teoh’s Footscray home in possession of a bottle, found to contain 673.5 grams of pure methamphetamine. A search of Teoh’s home located multiple clip-seal bags containing 865 grams of a crystalline substance, $15,000 in cash and other drug paraphernalia. Teoh initially denied the offending, eventually pleading guilty after Yip agreed to give evidence against Teoh. Teoh sought to appeal his sentence on the grounds it was “manifestly excessive” and the judge gave insufficient weight to his personal circumstances and rehabilitation prospects. He argued he had an otherwise unblemished record, a strong work ethic and history, family support and had demonstrated significant remorse. Court of Appeal Justice Pamela Tate this month granted Teoh leave to appeal against his sentence after prosecutors agreed it was appropriate.
What does it mean to grow up African in Australia? In 2016, Yarraville writer Maxine Beneba Clarke had a social media conversation with fellow writer Ahmed Yussuf, suggesting that it was time for a “Growing Up African in Australia” book. The idea was that it would be a work along the lines of the Growing Up Asian in Australia anthology released by publisher Black Inc in 2008. Discussions continued behind the scenes with the upshot being Monday’s announcement that Clarke will be the editor of just such an anthology, to be published by Black Inc. Clarke, of Afro-Caribbean descent, will edit the collection, along with input from Yussuf and writer Magan Magan. Clarke said people of African descent had been in Australia for at least 200 years, yet their stories were largely missing from Australian writing. “There are so many misconceptions and political investment in talking about African migrants as a recent phenomenon,” she said. “I think we don’t really understand much about diaspora in Australia.” Submissions should be between 1000 and 3000 words and must be received by June 1. Cops seek fire suspect By Benjamin Millar Police have released an image of man wanted in relation to a fire that severely damaged a house in West Footscray last month. Police and emergency services were called to the Geelong Road fire about 5.15pm on Wednesday, January 10. The MFB received multiple calls for the blaze and firefighters arrived to find a brick veneer and weatherboard single-storey house well alight.
Crews brought the fire under control within five minutes of their arrival, but substantial damage was caused to the abandoned house. The fire was deemed suspicious and police were notified. Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed any suspicious behaviour in the area at the time to come forward. They are hoping to speak with a man seen in the area at the time of the incident. He was wearing red pants and carrying a backpack. Maribyrnong Crime Investigation Unit
detectives have released a facial composite image of a man who they believe may be able to assist with their inquiries. Anyone with any information is being urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report at crimestoppersvic.com.au

The role that they want Three dancers from Altona’s Elenya Performing Arts Center will be dancing like greased lightnin’. Altona’s James Evans, 11, and Swaye Draper, 14, and Werribee’s Shae Roether, 13, have been selected as part of the chorus for Grease – The Arena Experience. The world’s largest production of Grease, featuring some of Australia’s biggest stars, will be performed at Melbourne’s Hisense Arena in April. The young local trio were put through a training boot camp prior to rehearsals, dancing to hits from the most popular movie musical of all time. Elenya principal Donna De Paoli said the three were selected from about 2000 who auditioned. “I just think it is wonderful because I think kids need to realise they’ve got to work hard, and these kids do work hard,” she said. “To actually go into a big audition and realise that
they can do it and achieve things through hard work, I think is wonderful.” Another student from Elenya, 12-year-old Crystal Brooking of Werribee South, was recently cast in the Melbourne City Youth Ballet production of Alice in Wonderland. She played multiple roles, including that of a card soldier guarding the Queen of Hearts. Goya Dmytryshchak

MY PLACE Yarraville’s Penelope “Poppy” Papadoupoulos is a proud gardener and renowned cook who has lived in the inner west for more than five decades. She speaks with Benjamin Millar. What’s your connection with Yarraville? I moved to Yarraville with my husband in 1963 after growing up in Sunshine. I’m been living in Seddon, Footscray and Yarraville for 55 years. There has been a big Greek community in the area all this time. I love very much this area, that’s why I’ve stayed here. I love the area, I love Australia. I have a very good time, I have my children here – I have a son and a daughter and a grandson and granddaughter. What do you like best about living in Yarraville? It’s a very friendly area. It doesn’t matter if it’s people with other languages or from another country, I’m friends with everyone. The Vietnamese are very good people. The young Australian people, we all share our food that we grow. I love the people on my street and in the neighbourhood. I’m very, very happy here.
I’ve nearly finished the garden now. I planted tomatoes, capsicum, zucchini, leeks, parsley, mint, celery, onions, corn, everything. No secrets – in autumn I prepare the soil with sheep manure, but nothing else. I like to make traditional food – spanakopita, dolmades and loukoumades. Where else do you like to spend your time? I like to go to Olive Oil & Butter, Alfa Bakehouse
(Joe Mastroianni)
What can you tell us about your garden and cooking?
and Barkley Johnson. The Greek church, my family and my garden are the most important things. I have walked every morning in Cruikshank Park for more than 15 years. I used to walk
on my own, but then I met some other Greek ladies who lived in my street and another who lived around the corner. Now there are six of us. I make coffee and breakfast for them.
What changes have you noticed at the park? There are more people new, more trees – it’s a beautiful park. Plenty of people and good people. A lot of young people and babies.

FOOD REVIEW
CONSIDER THE SAUCE There’s a new obsession for Kenny Weir at Parotta Station At Parotta Station, you’ll be served south Indian food. So anyone even passingly familiar with the west’s many dosa joints – or even its Sri Lankan places – will feel right at home. There’s string hoppers, a simple dosa offering, the chopped bread dish that is kothu – along with things of broader Indian outlook such as lamb korma and biryanis. But the proprietor has some twists going on here very much down to his home state of Tamil Nadu. Most emphatically, they come in the form of the eponymous parotta, a version of the eternal flatbread. In this case, the bread is lovingly moulded into a scroll before being fried, the result being a marvellous, magical and flaky experience. Parotta Station serves them in a variety of ways, including egg-stuffed ($3.50), two of which we take away for Bennie’s next-day school lunch. But the big hit for us is the combo named parotta with saalna ($6.50). Two standard, fresh and sublime parotta, a fried egg and a generous tub of coconut/ tomato curry gravy. We’re told this is meat-based to the extent it uses a mutton stock as part of the base. How good is this? Right up there. We’d rate this as good a cheap eat as can be found and rank it right alongside the very best to be had at banh mi or dosa establishments anywhere.
PAROTTA STATION Address: 28a Millers Road, Brooklyn Phone: 9314 9934 Shamiyan ($11.50) are patties made of lentils and lamb mince that taste and feel of neither. They have a very mild spice kick and are very dry; we happily dip them in the curry gravy served with our parotta. They’re an interesting experience, but not one that completely bowls us over. Aatu kaal paya ($12.50) is a stew of lamb trotters. Forget any ideas of similarity to pork hocks or even lamb shanks. The most precise comparison here is with chicken feet – there’s no meat whatsoever, just various shards and lumps of random glutinous material. So not everyone’s cup of tea, but if you are hip to Chinese-style chicken feet, go right ahead. But at Parotta Station, parotta are the main go. We reckon we’ll be inhaling that “parotta with saalna” combo many times in the coming year. Parotta Station is on Uber for those in appropriate postcodes and is closed on Tuesdays.

PUTTING THE ‘V’ IN CAKE
A few years ago, I did a favour for a vegan friend of mine. To say thank you, she presented me with a box of pretty, pastel vegan cupcakes. I was both delighted and dubious. How tasty could a cupcake be, I wondered, if it’s devoid of butter and eggs? My question was answered on the very first bite. They were deliciously rich, decadent, moist and crumbly, all the things a proper cupcake should be. I’ve since discovered avocado can be a wonderful substitute for eggs and butter. You can even make frosting out of it. I only had to look at a picture of this particular chocolate cake and I was a goner. The beauty of this vegan cake recipe from www. mysticalraven.com is that you don’t have to go scouting around health food shops and the like for the ingredients … most are probably already in your pantry.

Grand and welcoming and moments from the ocean, this Edwardian property is so close to the beach you see the water clearly at the end of the street. The deep triple-pitched roofline is part of an extension that combined two smaller Edwardian properties at least more than 20 years ago but you wouldn’t spot it. It is a perfectly integrated design. The result, together with more recent high-quality renovations, combine to create a large family residence that harnesses light and space. The established gardens, wide frontage and deep side paths on either side of the

property create a perfectly-proportioned first impression. Enter through a leadlight door to chestnut hardwood flooring and a stately carpeted front sitting room with a refurbished fireplace including its Edwardian timber surround. Soaring ceilings, plantation shutters and high skirting boards set a mood replicated throughout. The main bedroom opposite the hall has similar period features. Its en suite has floor-to-ceiling matte marble tiling and a walk-in robe to the side. The subtle deep matte plum cabinetry matches the bespoke vanity with twin bowl-style basins.
Pass the two-flight stairwell to the main living areas. A generous formal dining with an original restored fireplace opens to a sprawling open-plan kitchen, meals and living area, with no-less than 16 sash windows, flooding the area with light. The kitchen has all the usual high-end specifications such as Caesarstone benches, walk-in pantry, high-end appliances and plenty of Blum soft-closing cabinetry. The casual meals area is set within a large bay window and looks out to the deep undercover deck and lawn.

From March 2018 – April 2018, Melbourne Water is undertaking a control program at Kororoit Creek and Skeleton Creek to reduce the number of rabbits. This is part of our commitment to responsible land management, biodiversity conservation and continued good amenity for our neighbours. Visitors are reminded that these areas are conservation zones and the following precautions should be observed: 4 % "& '& +, $"+! 55 MARIBYRNONG & HOBSONS BAY STAR WEEKLY \ FEBRUARY 28, 2018
SPORT Footscray scrambles to find form for finals Footscray has hit a flat spot at the wrong end of the Victorian Premier Cricket season. The Bulldogs have suffered consecutive losses in games where they could have locked in a finals’ berth. While the fifth-placed Bulldogs should still reach the finals, there are form concerns in the finals run-in after Saturday’s 29-run loss to Kingston Hawthorn at Walter Galt Reserve. Kingston Hawthorn could only muster 176 off 76.3 overs, but it was more than enough to beat the Bulldogs. The Hawks were held back by the Bulldogs’ bowling, which saw four individuals – Hamish Winter-Irving, Lucas Dredge, Jack Sheppard and Tim Buszard – take two wickets apiece. The letdown for Footscray came with the bat. The Bulldogs crumbled to be all out for 147 in 55.5 overs.
They appeared to be coasting to victory at 2-92 after a strong start from top order batsmen Matthew Underwood (30), Greg Munro (24) and Hayden Butterworth (39), but their last nine wickets fell for just 55. Footscray can secure its finals’ spot with a win over Melbourne in a final round at the Merv Hughes Oval. In the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association, Yarraville is back in the top six after a commanding 97-run victory over St Bernard’s Old Collegians at the Yarraville Oval. After making 380 on day one courtesy of centuries to captain Matthew Love (114) and Joe Billings (119), the Eagles were always going to be hard to topple, but St Bernard’s fought it out until the bitter end with Chris Spinella leading the charge with 114. Yarraville’s reward for their victory was
reclaiming sixth place on the ladder, following Werribee’s draw with Taylors Lakes. If Yarraville can beat Taylors Lakes in a final round one-day game this Saturday, they will be in the finals. Williamstown moved into top spot with a hard-fought six-wicket win over Altona at J.K. Grant Reserve. Patrick O’Malley scored 77 and Brenton Hodges contributed 69 as the Seagulls successfully chased down the A’s total of 239. In the Victorian Turf Cricket Association senior division, Spotswood made its last-ditch attempt to break into the top four, posting 207 off 65.2 overs against Yarraville Club. The Clubbers will start day two on Saturday with 2-36 on the board. Lance Jenkinson

Murphy, the former Western Bulldog, is back in local footy as coach of the St Albans seniors in the WRFL – but he is making his mark in other areas as well. Brad has become an ambassador and public voice of Adopt Change and Ladder. Both organisations are working for change in adoption laws and awareness in Australia, where adoption numbers are very low. Brad was put into foster care at 16 months after his father was jailed and his mother did a runner. Both were drug addicts. Brad considers himself one of the lucky ones, as he stayed with the same family, which eventually adopted him when they legally could at age 18. The organisations are always looking for financial help. adoptchange.org.au
■I
don’t think I have ever seen a funnier guest speaker than Greg Ritchie, who told some hilarious stories at the long lunch run by the Williamstown CYMS Cricket Club last Friday. The former Test batsman – universally known as Fat Cat – had the crowd begging for more, even after more than an hour of stories. Controversy has followed the popular Queenslander in recent years as the PC police analyse and dissect his every word. In all honesty, he is not offensive – he is funny and not the least bit degrading to anyone. There are people who find the most beige comments worthy of a national campaign. There is nothing you can do about that. I had not seen him live before, but like everyone in the room, I am a big fan now.

Nine the Magic number By Lance Jenkinson The text messages coming in to the phone of Altona Magic coach Goran Lozanovski after Saturday’s game were creating their own little symphony. Friends were posing questions such as: Is that score legitimate? Is there a mix up in the online scoring system? Were 11 goals really scored? There was no glitch in the system. The Magic simply ran riot in a 9-2 annihilation of Sunshine George Cross at Knights Stadium on Saturday. “I was saying on the bench that I don’t think I’ve been involved in a game where there’s been 11 goals scored,” Lozanovski said. “That was a little bit surprising. “It is rare, but it’s nice when it happens.” For the first 45 minutes, Altona was the better team, but it did not show on the scoreboard which was locked at two apiece. The Magic had the lion’s share of attack, resulting in goals to Marino Gasparis and Jon McShane, but goals to David Younan and Branden Petrevski gave the Georgies parity. Just before the half-time break the game
erupted. Sunshine’s first goalscorer Younan was judged to have committed two yellow card-worthy fouls, leaving his side down to 10 men. A ruthless Altona took full advantage, scoring not once, but twice through Ben Clarke and Mark Pistininzi to go into half-time with a 4-2 advantage. Lozanovski agreed it can be frustrating for a team to lose a player through line-ball yellow cards, but said it was important to remain level-headed, which he felt the Georgies failed to do from that point in the game. “Once you start losing your discipline and your shape, it can become quite messy and it did for them unfortunately,” Lozanovski said. Altona was a tad wasteful in the first half, but they had the killer touch in the final 45 minutes. Magic goals to Jordan Wilkes and Ben Litfin came before the second red card, awarded to Su-Beom An, leaving the hosts down to nine men. The Magic did as they pleased in the final 21 minutes, posting three more goals through McShane – who finished with a
56 MARIBYRNONG & HOBSONS BAY STAR WEEKLY \ FEBRUARY 28, 2018
double – substitute James McGarry and man-of-the-match Melvin Becket. After so many missed chances to bury teams last year, Lozanovski was pleased to see his side keep its foot on the pedal for the full 90. “You don’t get these opportunities every week where you get one or two send-offs, so you need to punish and hurt teams in those situations,” Lozanovski said. “It was very rewarding to get eight different scorers on the score sheet.” Becket was outstanding in his first start for the season. “The whole group was great, but Melvin was our standout today,” Lozanovski said. “He’s got a bit of X-factor about him and he can cause havoc for most defences.” Altona will host Melbourne Victory in the third round at Paisley Park on Saturday. In the FFA Cup, Laverton had a comfortable 4-0 win over Noble Park at Laverton Park Reserve on Saturday, but it was bad news for Altona North, who was upended 1-0 by Monash University at D.N. Duane Reserve, and Maribyrnong Greens, who were trounced 6-2 by Tatura at John McEwen Reserve.

CYs look to have unearthed a find in Chris Jackson, who made the Victorian under-15 side for the schoolboy carnival recently and showed some skill as a leg-spinner of the future. He has already played some senior cricket. The VTCA final round is this weekend, with finals spots up for grabs. In the top division, all top four positions could change, especially if Spotswood defeats Yarraville Club. In the subbies, Werribee won’t decide its own fate after a draw last week saw it fall out of the six. Hoppers Crossing will rely on a fairytale finish to go any further than this weekend.

Bulldogs break records in a big win over the Blues It was a night of firsts for the Western Bulldogs in the AFL Women’s on Friday night. The Bulldogs hosted the AFLW’s first ever pride game. They broke records on the field with the highest score registered and the biggest winning margin in a 12.14 (86) to 2.1 (13) demolition job on Carlton at the Victoria University Whitten Oval. The icing on the cake was small forward Brooke Lochland, who kicked the highest individual goals tally in an AFLW game with seven majors. Bulldogs coach Paul Groves rated the performance as “clearly the best” from his team in their two-year history of the competition. “I didn’t see it coming,” he said of the blowout result. “I was particularly nervous today. “We really rate Carlton, we rate their list and the players they’ve got there, so to be able to have 26 scoring shots and score 86, we were rapt.” It was all one way traffic from the first bounce to the final siren. The Bulldogs barely put a foot wrong as they
executed to perfection in all facets of play. Their skills were once again superior, they hunted in packs defensively, they were brave with their ball movement and they turned inside 50s into scores. The pro-Bulldogs crowd of 8987 would have gone home with smiles as their team showed what level of football they can produce in the absence of injured stars Katie Brennan, Isabel Huntington, Daria Bannister and Elyse Gamble as they rocketed to the top of the ladder with a sky high percentage. Lochland was the talk of the town on Saturday morning. The 26-year-old electrified the Whitten Oval with her crumbing play and dazzling finishing. Her fifth goal of the night was an AFLW record, but she was not stopping there, finishing up with seven on the night. “It’s a little bit unreal,” she said. “It doesn’t happen unless everyone up the ground is playing their part. “I was just lucky enough that I happened to be on the end of them, so credit to the girls tonight, they played amazing, everyone played their role, went in hard, did what they needed to
do and it was nice to come away with the win.” Lochland is a former ice skater. She had success on the international stage in that sport, but retired when she missed out on the 2014 Winter Olympics. Football was not on the radar until one night when she was working in a pub. “Footy happened to fall in my hands,” Lochland said. “I was actually working in a pub and there was a footy team who were having a little function there, so they told me to come and play a couple of games and it just went from there.” Emma Kearney was outstanding in the midfield for the Bulldogs with 26 possessions, six marks and five tackles. Ellie Blackburn was dangerous with 18 possessions and a goal, while youngsters Aisling Utri, with 18 disposals, and Monique Conti, with 16, continue to impress. The Bulldogs will be out to preserve their spot on top of the ladder when they face Collingwood in the fifth round at Ted Summerton Reserve in Moe on Sunday. Lance Jenkinson
Veteran back for Games By Lance Jenkinson The comeback story is complete for western suburbs badminton star Renuga Veeran. The Altona North resident came out of retirement last year in the hope of landing a spot on the Australian badminton team for the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast and she was excited to receive a call-up to the national team last week. “That’s mainly the reason why I took the opportunity to make a comeback,” Veeran said. “I was really thinking twice, but I haven’t played a big event on home ground before, so when they asked me I said ‘for sure’. “Lucky enough my work was really flexible and my boss was really supportive, so I’m working part-time at the moment while I’m training for the Commonwealth Games.” The Malaysian-born Veeran has been one of Australia’s finest badminton players for more than a decade. This will be the 31-year-old’s third Commonwealth Games, having represented Australia at Delhi 2010 and Glasgow 2014. She reached a career peak in London 2012 as a member of Australia’s Olympic Games team. It’s not all fun and games for a national representative in a minority sport. Just like most of the other badminton players who will grace our screens during the Commonwealth Games, Veeran has to work full-time to make ends meet and does most of her training in her own time. Being part of the Australian team, having all the memories of playing in the world-renowned events and all the personal achievements along the way make it all worthwhile for Veeran. “Everyone does it part-time in badminton, no one is really a full-time athlete unless they get enough sponsorship and funding from the government,” she said. “I’ve lost income and some of the tournaments I’ve had to pay for myself to play, but the thing is, there’s no regrets. “The money, you can earn that later on, but the opportunity to compete in these big events, they don’t come around that much.” Veeran is a badminton lifer. The game has provided her so many highlights that she would never totally step away from it, nor miss out on a chance to spruik about the sport. She always knew she would return to competition in some form, but never thought that it would be back on the international stage. “I thought I might come back for nationals or some local events, but I never thought I’d make a comeback for Australia,” she said. “It was a good opportunity for me to come back and be able to qualify to go to Gold Coast.”
Renuga Veeran has made a surprise comeback to represent Australia in badminton at the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast. (Damjan Janevski)
Veeran is still highly visible in the badminton community. She coaches at the Altona Badminton Centre and is still involved with Badminton Victoria. The sport was ingrained into her from a young age. “My dad was a coach, so we started off being dragged to the court pretty much, but later on I really liked the sport, I had a bit of talent and, with a bit of hard work, I felt like I had the
technique and the skill to progress,” Veeran said. Veeran will pair up with long-time doubles partner Leanne Choo for the Commonwealth Games. “When I made the comeback, she said she wanted to play with me again, so we decided to give it a shot,” Veeran said. Veeran is still on the look-out for sponsors for the Commonwealth Games.
Monique Conti has enjoyed a stellar rookie season across half-forward for the Western Bulldogs. (Shawn Smits)
Smith wins but Dudkiewicz takes series Sydneysider Morgan Smith has won the final outing of the Footscray Cycling Club’s summer series. While the St George Cycling Team rider won the day, it was the familiar name of Footscray club champion Dom Dudkiewicz who took out the overall series win. Impressed with the assembled field of riders, Smith had to work hard to secure victory on the last stage at Drake Boulevard in Altona on Saturday. “This was the biggest and strongest Footscray field I’ve come across, so it was harder than normal,” Smith said. “What I really wanted was to let a break go for most of the race and bring it back towards the end, but the bunch closed everything down too quickly. “With three laps to go, I thought it was time to say goodbye, so I went. “Dom was on my wheel, but he was more focused on the series win, so I whacked it out of the corner and I was happy to take the win and Dom was happy to take the series.” Smith claimed victory from Dudkiewicz, with Paul Kenny securing third. Dudkiewicz won the series overall from Henry Dietze and Kenny. In B grade, it was a fairytale finish to the series for Mark Micallef. The 53-year-old from Werribee not only took out the final stage in a thrilling sprint finish, but also jumped from fourth to first in the overall points. “What a great day,” Micallef said. “You have a lot of poor days on a bike so today was a real joy. Every move I made stuck and every time I rolled the dice I came up sevens. “When it came to the sprint, I knew I didn’t have much of a chance, so I took the initiative of hitting the front just before the last corner, jammed it in the gutter, made more noise than Puffing Billy and never looked behind.” Micallef took the race ahead of Matt Arthur and Adrian Ward. Micallef leap-frogged Timm Weitzel and Matt Nelson to take the B-grade series win. The other series winners were John Ross (C grade), Sarah Dam (D grade women), Sam Tammaro (D grade men) and Emma Andrews (E grade).
