DR ROGER BALFOUR MEE
Time for a heart to heart Valentine’s Day is also HeartKids Sweetheart Day, a fundraising event for children with congenital heart disease. Williamstown’s Dr Roger Balfour Mee, who in 1988 performed Australia’s first paediatric heart transplant, has been involved in more than 13,200 heart operations. Dr Mee said Australia had achieved such high success rates in paediatric heart procedures that at first there was disbelief from overseas’ peers. Every day in Australia, eight babies are born with heart disease and four lives are lost each week. There is no known cure. “It’s close to Highpoint, to the city, good-size blocks. When they did all these inner city subdivisions all that time ago they were very generous.” He said Braybrook was being snapped up by buyers. “That Braybrook area was so affordable and people are jumping on it left, right and centre,” Mr Sweeney said. “Some of the big development sites are $1 million-plus now so Braybrook’s gone through the roof. “I’m expecting a growth through the west of five to 10 per cent this year.” Greg Hocking Elly Partners director Wayne Elly predicted a “fairly strong market” for 2018. “Anywhere in close proximity to the city is really strong,” he said. “Yarraville/Footscray’s very strong. Altona Meadows, Maidstone … the gap has got too wide so they’ve got to move up relatively rapidly and that’s why I think you’ll see the most growth in the next couple of years.”

Bridesmaid suburbs will continue to drive property price growth in Hobsons Bay and Maribyrnong as the two municipalities recorded their highest annual growth in seven years, experts say. The top-five suburbs for annual growth in 2017 were Altona Meadows (26.7 per cent), Altona (21.4 per cent), Seabrook (19.4 per cent), Braybrook (19.1 per cent) and Brooklyn (18.5 per cent), data from the Real Estate Institute of Victoria shows. Williamstown, regarded by real estate agents as “the Toorak of the west”, had the highest median house price of $1,650,000 and annual growth last year of 15.5 per cent. The next highest medians were in Maribyrnong ($1,205,000), Newport ($1,070,000), Spotswood ($1,060,000), Seddon ($1,020,000) and Altona and Kingsville (both $1 million). Melbourne recorded an annual median house price of $821,000, according to REIV data. REIV president Richard Simpson said ‘bridesmaid’ suburbs – where the median house price was well below the inner city median of just over $1.5 million – were the areas to watch. “Suburbs which remain below the citywide median house price, such as Laverton and Seabrook, are expected to experience price growth in the coming year while the bridesmaid effect will continue to drive price growth in Melbourne’s inner west,” he said. The five lowest medians for Hobsons Bay and Maribyrnong were Laverton ($565,000), Seabrook ($605,000), Altona Meadows ($701,500), Braybrook ($825,000) and Maidstone ($862,500).
Sweeney’s Estate Agents Williamstown director Wayne Sweeney nominated Altona North – which recorded a median house price of $915,000 and annual growth of 13.7 per cent – as a top spot to buy. He described Brooklyn and Maidstone as “sleepy hollows” where people could still buy affordable housing. “Maidstone’s been on the fly for years,” Mr Sweeney said.

Top cop hoses down gang crisis By Benjamin Millar Police working to tackle youth crime in the west are warning panic around an “African gang crisis” may be making their job more difficult by driving further trouble. Superintendent Therese Fitzgerald, the western suburbs’ new top cop, said addressing law and order issues among young people requires a whole-of-community strategy bringing together police, leaders, educators and other social services.
Superintendent Fitzgerald told Star Weekly that early intervention is vital, and rushing to label all youth of African origin involved in crime as “gangs” could escalate offending. “Just because the community hears ‘African gangs’, they see four African teenagers walking along a footpath behaving like a lot of Caucasian teenagers might behave and all of a sudden they’re really frightened,” she said. “I’m really conscious of labelling people. I remember going to the supermarket and seeing a young African man working, and people
were avoiding going into his lane to purchase their groceries. Now for me that’s really sad.” Superintendent Fitzgerald said there have been incidents of “networked youth offending” but police are not seeing the African-Australian community offending at a gang level. “It’s more teenage peer groups hanging out together and doing really bad things. “It’s not helpful, that MTS [Menace to Society] stuff … it gets that notoriety and then of course it encourages the behaviour.” According to Superintendent Fitzgerald,
the best way of tackling youth crime is via prevention and talking about issues impacting on children that can lead to offending. “Multi-agency models have been established … we have education around the table, juvenile justice, corrections, the justice department and the principals from the schools as well, all around the table, talking about people we see are at risk,” she said. “We know that if they’re in school that’s one preventative aspect, that’s one little piece of the puzzle that might help us.”
Working for harmony Leading sports figures including AFL stars Majak Daw, Aliir Aliir and Changkuoth Jiath and VFL player Reuben William are calling for people to not let the actions of a few “define everyone of African descent”. Other signatories to a joint statement shared on social media on Friday include Melbourne Victory’s Thomas Deng, Adelaide 36ers basketballer Majok Deng and professional kickboxer Emmanuel Chool. Reuben William has spearheaded the campaign in response to what he considers unfair attacks on all African-Australians. The 20-year-old, who arrived in Australia from South Sudan at age four, wants to shift the spotlight towards other areas in which young African-Australians have been excelling. “It has been a hot topic and we want to send a positive message against the generalisations of the population of African-Australians and how unique each and every one of us are in our own right,” he said.
“Every African-Australian kid has their own aspirations, whether in sport or law or other fields, and some of this gets lost and overlooked when something like this happens.” Using the hashtag #AfricanGangs, the statement makes clear that the sport stars don’t accept criminal behaviour, and urged the community to not allow it to define everyone of African descent. “We are hurting with you, sympathise and stand with you. But it is important that you stand with us to help tackle the issue. This is something that we can overcome together.” William said he had little difficulty convincing fellow African-Australian athletes to get on board and contribute to the joint-statement. “I thought it was important for us to speak out for the community, broadening out people’s knowledge.” Benjamin Millar

Festival back for more The Yarraville Festival returns to the heart of the village this month featuring a bigger footprint than ever before. The festival will transform Yarraville on February 18 with stalls of all descriptions and five stages for a range of entertainment. Local makers and artists, community groups and food stalls will line the streets while carnival rides and amusements will provide plenty of fun and colour for all ages. Live music and entertainment will feature performances from established musicians and some of the best young talent the area has to offer. Yarraville Festival committee’s Carla Smith said the festival footprint will expand west
along Anderson Street this year, all the way to Fehon Street. “The festival is still one of the biggest westside events, with five stages of entertainment rides and a petting zoo,” she said. “However, this year and for years to come, we want a larger focus on ‘community’ and ‘local’.” The festival pet parade is again set to be one of the event’s highlights as dogs of all shapes and sizes dress up and show off their best tricks in a bid to take out the ‘best in show’. The 2018 festival will be held 10am-7pm Sunday, February 18. Details: www.yarravillefestival.com.au Benjamin Millar

Squash bid has topspin
Tollway gets under way
Plans to make Hobsons Bay the squash capital of Melbourne’s west have been touted by the sport’s national body. Squash Australia (SA) has submitted a proposal to Hobsons Bay council to establish an indoor space in the municipality. SA community facility manager Hamish Cain said it was an opportunity for Hobsons Bay to become a major drawcard for the sport, which is forecast to have more than 191,000 players this year.
Here’s an opportunity to provide an influx of - Michael Grech tourism
(Joe Mastroianni)
’’
This month’s national championships are being held at Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre in Albert Park. “Melbourne’s west has a population of 727,629,” Mr Cain said. “It has three [squash] clubs and 13 courts. “Hobsons Bay has a population of 86,360 and has no clubs and as a result, no courts. “There is an alarming under supply in Melbourne’s west and in Hobsons Bay. “There is the opportunity to address this by engaging with squash around the H.D. Graham Reserve [Altona Meadows] or the Paisley Park [Altona North] master planning process. “Ideally, squash courts would be multi-use.” Mr Cain said the estimated building cost was about $500,000. He said SA wanted the council to provide the courts and SA would lease the facility at commercial rates. Cr Michael Grech said he believed it was “a brilliant opportunity” for Hobsons Bay.
MICHAEL GRECH
“They want to have all their international games, so a whole heap of people coming to Melbourne, and the spot in Victoria will be Hobsons Bay,” he said. “Here is an opportunity to provide an influx
of tourism, a sporting facility and also a return on investment of approximately 10 per cent. “When do we ever get a realistic commercial return on investment with any of our sporting facilities?”
Works are under way on the West Gate Tunnel tollway, despite key legislation around the project still missing and a push for alternatives to the project. Premier Daniel Andrews visited a worksite on Whitehall Street in Footscray last Wednesday to announce works had begun for two tunnel boring machines to begin their excavation in 2019. Mr Andrews said the tollway project remains the only viable way to remove “the blight” of container trucks from residential streets. “Unless you build this alternative you will never get trucks out of local roads,” he said. The works began just days ahead of Friends of the Earth Melbourne’s launch of an alternative transport strategy, Mobilise Melbourne: A Community Plan for Transport. Friends of the Earth sustainable cities spokesperson Rachel Lynskey said governments have repeatedly failed to listen to the community about planning and transport in Melbourne. “We’ll be presenting these … ideas to all state political parties, calling on them to ramp up investment in sustainable transport initiatives,” she said. The Coalition and the Greens have vowed to use their numbers in Parliament’s upper house to block the tollway project by refusing to pass the legislation needed to extend Transurban’s tolling of CityLink for a further decade. Cumming takes a tilt for Justice By Benjamin Millar
Derryn Hinch and Catherine Cumming in Footscray. (Benjamin Millar)
Maribyrnong councillor Catherine Cumming is ending her 20-year run as an independent to take a tilt at state Parliament as a candidate for Derryn Hinch’s Justice Party. The Federal Senator was in Footscray on Friday to officially declare Cr Cumming as his party’s western metropolitan candidate. Cr Cumming said she had never been interested in joining a major party, but the Justice Party was an opportunity to remain true to her beliefs and speak out as she wished. “The west deserves someone who is outspoken and a voice of the west and I’m
hoping to be that voice in state Parliament,” she said. “One of the number one priorities for the community is their safety, law and order, getting justice – but also looking at the issues that actually create people getting into the justice system, such as mental health issues, the drug problem, gaming, youth unemployment and unemployment in general.” Senator Hinch said Cr Cumming has been an independent councillor for 20 years, but supports all of his party’s major policy positions. “She knows the area, she knows the situation and she knows the problems,” he said.
“And I think she’s got a good chance, the major parties are on the nose.” Senator Hinch is recruiting candidates to run in each of the upper-house regions across the state and a handful of lower house seats. “One of the criticisms of me is that I’m a Federal Senator and a lot of these issues are state issues – the bail laws and the sentencing laws are all local issues,” he said. “I was never thrilled with minimum sentences, I thought you’ve got to let judges and magistrates do their job. But when they’re not doing their job then we’ve got to force them to do it.” The election is scheduled for November 24.
The tail of a big heart Altona Meadows’ Alanna Sutton-Jones has undergone the chop to help children who have lost their hair. The 15-year-old student at Mount St Joseph Girls’ College is donating 35.5 centimetres of hair to Variety – the Children’s Charity. As part of Variety’s Hair with Heart national hair donation initiative, Alanna’s ponytails will be made in to a wig for a child who has lost hair because of a medical condition. She is also raising money for Variety to help provide wigs and equipment to children in need. “I’ve been wanting to do it for a long time,” she said. “I looked into how much it actually costs for families to buy the wigs and the bare minimum was about $6000. “Just thinking about a young girl or a young boy that has lost their hair and then that
confidence gone – I felt like I could give back to the child. “But they’ll have to wait for more hair or other people to donate because it takes about 20 ponytails to make one wig.” To donate to Alanna’s fundraiser for Variety, go to hairwithheart.everydayhero.com/au/ alanna-sutton-jones-hair-chop-fundraiser-forhair-with-heart For more information, visit variety.org.au. Royal relay rolls in A slice of the Commonwealth Games will come to the inner-west this Saturday as the Queen’s Baton Relay arrives in style. The baton has been making a 100-day journey across Australia since Christmas Day and will pass through Maribyrnong and Hobsons Bay on February 10 as two of only seven Melbourne stops. The baton, containing a message from the Queen, left Buckingham Palace on March 13. It will enter Williamstown aboard the tall ship Enterprize and will arrive at Commonwealth Reserve at 1.15pm. There will be a community celebration at Commonwealth Reserve from 11.30am-3pm. The Altona relay leg will start at Kim Reserve in Millers Road at 2.58pm, travelling south along Millers Road to reach the Esplanade
about 3.12pm and Pier Street about 3.20pm. Celebrations will be held at Logan Reserve from 1.30-4pm. At precisely 4.41pm the baton will leave the Ted Whitten statue in front of Whitten Oval in Footscray and begin its journey to the Little Saigon Precinct, where it will arrive at 5.30pm. Australian rock band Kingswood will headline a free community celebration to be held in the precinct, rounding out the relay’s first night in Victoria. The baton relay will end at the Commonwealth Games opening ceremony on the Gold Coast on April 4. Details: gc2018.com/qbr Benjamin Millar and Goya Dmytryshchak

Searching for Sunshine By Goya Dmytryshchak An artists’ collective researching lesbian and gay pioneers from Melbourne’s west has sparked a search for a “Sunshine gay girl” who wrote a letter to the Sunshine Advocate in 1980. Wild Books Collective, comprising Stephen Louis, Susan Miller and Gennivieve Collier, found the letter while searching the Australian Lesbian and Gay Archives for an exhibition titled Other: Queer Stories, Past and Present, showing at Altona’s Joel Gallery until February 15. Among those featured are Sunshine’s Leigh Bowery, who ran a London nightclub, and Gordon Doak who, in 1973, walked to the city through the streets of Sunshine, Tottenham and Footscray with a banner proclaiming: ‘I am proud of my homosexuality. The kitchen, with stainless-steel benchtops and contemporary cabinetry, overlooks the decked entertaining area. A large lawn with mature trees and a small fruit orchard are to the side. The meals area is separate and features a period fireplace with timber panelled feature wall in keeping with the overall charm of the residence. The lounge room is generous and light-filled. A beautiful single-fronted Victorian facade is picture perfect. The front door opens to Baltic floorboards, with the ornate cornices and high ceilings creating a lovely entry. Two large bedrooms both have full-length mirrored built-in robes. The main bathroom follows and has been completely renovated. The lounge room is inviting, has good light and looks on to the kitchen with a breakfast area for three. The kitchen has slate grey over-sized tiling, stainless-steel appliances and great storage. There are hardwood floorboards throughout and the three bedrooms all have built-in robes. There are two living spaces, one with a gas fireplace and feature light, the other at the rear. The kitchen has a freestanding 900mm stainless-steel oven with matching rangehood, contemporary cabinetry and opens to the large dining area with study nook. The bathroom has been recently renovated. The propety is just moments from Yarraville shops.

and have period fireplaces, ceiling details, split-systems and built-in robes. The main bedroom has a tasteful contemporary en suite. The third bedroom is at the rear of the house and is also carpeted and has a split-system and built-in robes. The original restored windows with blockout curtains and matching pelmet add charm. The kitchen evokes the Edwardian aesthetic through soft-closing country-style cabinetry, painted to complement the houses’ exterior colour scheme.
A glass splashback and white composite stone benchtops are key elements of a large and well-designed kitchen, with twin Bosch ovens, an integrated dishwasher six-burner gas cooktop with stainless-steel rangehood part of the renovations. The main bathroom has period-style tiling, a timber corner-set vanity and a single shower. Hardwood floors continue into the open-plan downlit meals and lounge area. FOOD REVIEW
CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir gets all smokey-eyed about Texas barbecue At what passes for a dining room at Tex-Oz Smokehouse, you’ll feel gravel underfoot. You’ll sit on plastic chairs while eating at tables apparently made of something like packing case wood. You’ll eat from cardboard containers while using plastic cutlery. You’ll order from a food truck parked on an otherwise empty lot. We think all that’s absolutely grand. Tex-Oz gives Melbourne life to a great no-frills barbecue tradition that has previously gained little or no traction here. Sure, in Memphis, Virginia and Texas, barbecue of many kinds can be enjoyed in grand and/or chic and/or hipster settings – and you’ll often pay a high price for doing so. But just as important – arguably even more important – are the cheapo roadside stands and shacks found throughout the land that cater to the quick-fix needs of regular folks seeking a good feed at the right price. And, yes, Tex-Oz Smokehouse does right in the money stakes, too. Equally appropriately, the menu is compact. A CTS team of three – myself, Bennie and Nat Stockley – enjoy a very nice, post-heatwave Saturday lunch. The smoked brisket and pulled pork – sold at $6 for 100 grams and seen here in 200-gram quantities – are excellent. The brisket, in particular, shines. The meat is more tender and juicy than it photographs and almost fat-free. And it goes fine with a house-made sauce that has a bit of a spice kick.
TEX-OZ SMOKEHOUSE Address: 12 Synnot Street, Werribee The stranded pig meat is fine, too, enough to have me recanting my oft-expressed judgment that pulled pork is largely a tasteless, over-hyped con. Bennie opts for the hybrid dish that is the Tex-Oz snack pack ($16), adorned in his case with more of that pulled pork. He likes it a bunch. For sides, we get coleslaw and potato salad – big serves for $4 each. The slaw is fresh and crunchy and very rough cut, making it a little unwieldy in terms of the plastic implements we are using. The spud concoction is heavily mayo-ised and doesn’t really hit the spot with us. Nat – who also goes the pulled pork and brisket route – gets fries, which he tells me are overdone in terms of the salt. I am reminded of legendary story I was told about a very famous Texas barbecue joint at which I dined several decades ago. Apparently, when the management decided to introduce some non-meat items to the menu – white sliced bread, raw onion and pickles – the locals damn near caused a riot. So if the Tex-Oz accessories don’t quite hit the bullseye, we’re happy to say simply: So what? And in the meat sphere, this place produces the goods in an admirably no-frills manner. Tex-Oz Smokehouse is open from noon, Thursdays through to Sundays.

SPORT Bragging rights up for grabs A newly formed Twenty20 tournament aims to find out who is the best team between the bridge and the beach in Hobsons Bay in cricket’s shortest format. In the inaugural year of the competition, six teams have entered to battle it out for the Squires Loft Cup, with $2500 to go to the winners. There will be two groups of three this season, including Altona Roosters, Gellibrand and Williamstown Colts in group one and Altona North, Newport-Digman and Williamstown Congs in group two. Williamstown Colts first XI player Hanni Harb is confident a successful first year will result in more teams participating in the future. “I would’ve loved to have got 10 teams in it to see who can stand up to the challenge, but a couple of teams couldn’t make it,” Harb said. “We got six teams to enter and I think it’s going to generate a lot of excitement. “When you’ve got so many teams locally, there’s always talks in pubs and there’s always
chat about this side and that side. “We’re all local cricketers, whether you’re playing Subbies ones or the bottom grade of the VTCA, so anything can happen on the day.” Altona North is the top seeded team in the competition, coming from the Victorian Turf Cricket Association’s second tier north west division. But Harb reckons the shortest format of cricket lends itself to upsets and that favourites can be toppled. “Twenty20 is one of those games where no matter how good your team is, upsets can happen,” he said. The group games will be played this Sunday with matches starting at 10am, 1pm and 4pm. Group one matches will be at Greenwich Reserve in Williamstown. Group two games will be at Bryan Martyn Oval in Newport. Group winners will advance to Tuesday’s grand final at Greenwich Reserve at 5.30pm.

IN THE DOGHOUSE ■ Footy
at the Western (Whitten) Oval is back for 2018 and that is good news, even if it is still February. I am not a big fan of the way footy has eaten into the calendar at the expense of other sports. Footy to me is a winter game and that means a late March start at best. I have no problem with footy being the No.1 sport – but I’d prefer that not be at the expense of every other sport. The AFLW will continue to grow and will eventually be played at the same time as the AFL. That will be a very interesting time for the game’s hierarchy.
■ The
Burton boys have been making news in the past few weeks, both on and off the field. Matthew Burton has moved into the role of football operations manager with the Calder Cannons after a few years with the Werribee Football Club. Matt’s older brother, Jono, has been making his mark on field for the Werribee Cricket Club with both bat and ball. After an injury interrupted start to the season, he weighed in with the bat last week against Kew in VSDCA north-west, scoring 55 after coming in as a nightwatchman, and then claiming a hat-trick in the last over of the day to finish with 3-1 from two overs.

■I
will not roll out the line about money ruining local football again, but Albion Football Club hosted a debt demolition day last Saturday. The club posted on social media that it was up against the wall and called on supporters to get behind it for the coming season. I hope the day went well and money was raised through the raffles, auction items and appearance by former Collingwood star Nick Maxwell. But why is the club against the wall again? Will this be the last time this kind of event is needed? Both questions deserve to be answered – not to me, but to the club faithful. And not just by Albion, but by every suburban club in financial trouble. There are a few.
■ Former
Dogs simply too good By Lance Jenkinson The Western Bulldogs opened their AFL Women’s season with a resounding 26-point win over Fremantle Dockers at Victoria University Whitten Oval on Sunday. The Bulldogs produced a more direct playing style, were much harder at the ball and displayed superior skills, more than doubling the Dockers on the scoreboard and leaping to the top of the AFLW ladder on percentage after one round. Bulldogs coach Paul Groves admits he and the coaching staff “over-coached” the team last season and wanted to see more of the players’ natural talent shine through in season two. “I think I’ve heard every coach say that we over-coached them last year,” Groves said. “Yes, you have structures, you have set-ups, but that’s a starting point and you play from there. We’ve got some girls with freakish ability.”
That freakish ability was on show for the 8500 crowd on Sunday. Bursting the game open early was captain and key forward Katie Brennan. Brennan was hampered by injury in season one and the Bulldog fans did not get to see the best of their marquee player. She made up for it with a three-goal first half against the Dockers, leading the Bulldogs to a 34-0 half-time lead. Brennan converted a long-range set shot into the breeze at the Geelong Road end, then used the wind to her advantage when hemmed up on the boundary for a set shot, getting some nice right to left swing to put the ball over the goal umpire’s hat. Brennan was not finished there, goaling with a snap shot on the run in the second quarter. “She presents really well and she’s strong,” Groves said. “She’s just a class human being, on the field and off field, as well. Her two goals into the breeze were phenomenal.”
42 MARIBYRNONG & HOBSONS BAY STAR WEEKLY \ FEBRUARY 7, 2018
Fremantle lifted a cog in the third quarter, kicking three goals to nil with the aid of the wind to trim to deficit to 15 points at three-quarter time. But the Bulldogs steadied in the last quarter through goals to Bonnie Toogood and Aasta O’Connor. The Bulldogs unveiled a new-look forward line, including the additions of first-round draft picks Isabel Huntington and Monique Conti. Huntington, the No.1 draft pick, showed a clean pair of hands in the air and at ground level, while Conti’s courage, speed and elusiveness made her a hard match-up for the Dockers. The smooth moving Ellie Blackburn was the Bulldogs’ leading possession getter with 23 disposals, while Emma Kearney had 18, Conti had 14 on debut and Brooke Lochland had 13. The Bulldogs will play the Brisbane Lions at South Pine Sports Complex on Sunday.

SPORT
Armstrong’s feat of clay Shooting sensation Thomas Armstrong has put the icing on the cake of a stellar sporting year, being adjudged the 2017 Don Deeble Rising Star winner. Armstrong was taken aback when his name was read out as the recipient of the prestigious award, named in honour of the late Don Deeble, one of Australia’s greatest baseballers, a pioneer of his sport and a product of Sunshine. The award recognises sporting talent under the age of 21 from Melbourne’s west, including five council areas, Brimbank, Hobsons Bay, Maribyrnong, Melton and Wyndham. Armstrong, from Plumpton, described it as a huge honour to join a list of recipients that includes internationally renowned sports people such as athlete Morgan Mitchell and basketballers Dante Exum and Rachel Jarry. Armstrong was quick to realise the sporting talent in his company when he arrived at the Allegra Function Venue in St Albans on Wednesday night. “There was such a big range of athletes and sports represented,” Armstrong said. “There was AFL top draft picks, girls that have represented high levels at a number of
disciplines, so it was a real honour just to be amongst those kind of people.” Armstrong had success on both the national and international stage last year. The 17-year-old was part of a Victorian team that won at the Australian National Trap Championships with a perfect score of 250 out of 250. Individually, Armstrong won his first national title in the points score competition, beating 500 other competitors with a combined score of 298 of 300 targets hit. Armstrong, a Werribee Victorian Clay Target Shooting Club member, took his talents to Europe later in the year, where he triumphed in the Italian Cup trap competition – an Olympic discipline – then took out a junior world title at the World Universal Trench shooting championships in France by a narrow two targets. “Every shot counts,” Armstrong said. “It all comes down to the practice we put in, we work on specific targets. It’s also a real credit to mum and dad for taking me everywhere and giving me the opportunity to train on all these different grounds and in different scenarios.” Armstrong is already hard at work in

anticipation of a huge 2018 season, starting with a world championship tilt in March. Armstrong received $5000 for the 2017 Don Deeble Rising Star award, while Monique Conti (basketball/AFL football) and Nathan Pelissier (para table tennis) each pocketed $2500,

Spotswood kept its finals hopes alive in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association senior division with a 58-run win over Keilor in a one-day game at McLean Reserve on Sunday. The Woodsmen posted 8-161 off their 40 overs, led by Trent McCormick (71) and Declan O’Brien (46). A superb team bowling performance from the Woodsmen restricted Keilor to just 103. The fifth-placed Woodsmen will host third-placed Seddon in a blockbuster at McLean Reserve on Saturday. Seddon will enter the match on the back of a hard-fought eight-run win over Greenvale Kangaroos at Hanmer Reserve last Sunday. Yarraville Club maintained its grip onr top spot with a 157-run mauling of Tullamarine at the Walker Oval. The Clubbers rolled Tulla for 58 with pacemen Emmett Bronca (4-15) and Hussain Hanif (4-12) snaring four wickets apiece. Johnathon Blake was the leading scorer with 56 in the Clubbers total of 4-215.

Hat-trick grounds Eagles By Lance Jenkinson Yarraville was feeling good about life 68 overs into the first day of a two-day contest with Werribee in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association at Chirnside Park on Saturday – but it only takes one bad over to wreck an otherwise positive day. The Eagles would have taken a run chase of 233 and would have been content to last to stumps on 0-2 with 232 to get the win, but the 69th over of the day spoiled that plan. Enter Werribee opening bowler Jonathan Burton. Burton took not one, not two, but three wickets in the last over to leave the Eagles reeling at 3-2 off three overs. Not only that, Burton did so with the first three balls of the last over, picking up a rare hat-trick by sending regular opener David Morgan and lower order batsmen Alex Hewet and Ben Kettlewell back to the pavilion. Eagles captain-coach Matthew Love admits
those three late wickets slightly changed the momentum of the game, but not so far as to say that Werribee should be favourites in the game. “It was going to end up an OK day, but unfortunately they jagged a wicket, it gave them a bit of momentum and they ripped through a few of our lower order batters that we sent out there as night watchmen to try and keep them out but unfortunately weren’t able to,” he said. “It’s not ideal losing three wickets, but two of them would have been batting in the last three, so in a way the momentum is with them starting off next week. We’ve just got to be confident and back ourselves in that we’ve got the batsmen to come that can do the job.” Yarraville’s bowlers had to be patient on a frustrating day. On countless times, the Eagles produced ripping deliveries that went unrewarded, particularly Hewet, who finished with 5-96 off 30 overs, but could well have had more wickets with a bit of luck.
“They played and missed a lot, so we didn’t have a lot of luck go our way early,” Love said. “Once we got into their middle order, we were able to get through them..” Talor Williams impressed with 3-31 off 7.3 overs, while wicketkeeper Joe Billings snared four catches. With Yarraville sitting in seventh spot and Werribee in ninth, this Saturday’s play will be the most important to date for both sides as they strive to reach the finals. “If we win, we go two games clear of them, if we lose, we draw level,” Love said. “Both clubs will be doing everything they can to get the six points.” In other games, Williamstown posted 8-324 on day one against Ivanhoe at the Williamstown Cricket Ground, with Mitchell Streiff (86 not out), Brent McMinn (62) and Dale McDonald (48) leading from the front. Altona, currently eighth, will be chasing 233 for victory against Melton at MacPherson Park.
Yarraville-Footscray has stayed in the hunt for a Bowls Victoria premier division finals berth with a 90-82 win over Essendon at Francis Street on Saturday. The Bulldogs closed to within 11 points of fourth-placed Deer Park after picking up 14 of a possible 18 points against Essendon with two rink wins and the overall result. Yarraville-Footscay and Deer Park will meet at Ballarat Road this weekend, so the stakes will undoubtedly be high for both clubs. Altona maintained its advantage at the top of the ladder with an 85-67 win over Lilydale.
Baseball
Newport Rams notched up a 4-1 win over Blackburn Orioles to keep their finals dream alive in the Baseball Victoria summer league division 1. In the middle of a hectic schedule, the Rams did battle with Melbourne, the team with the best record in the league, last night, and will back up with a home game against Moorabbin this Saturday.
