A big day for all sorts of citizens
Sister Jeanne Dwyer, the volunteer co-ordinator of Joseph’s Corner, has been named Maribyrnong’s Citizen of the Year. Joseph’s Corner provides psychological counselling and support for family members of people with drug and alcohol addictions. Sister Dwyer took the top honour in Maribyrnong council’s annual civic awards on Friday during a ceremony at Footscray Town Hall in which 40 of Australia’s newest citizens were officially welcomed. Guests at the Australia Day ceremony were then invited to get up close and personal with some of the country’s favourite critters. Sui, 12, enjoyed making friends with a diamond python snake. Top honour for doctor By Goya Dmytryshchak Altona North doctor Mukesh Haikerwal, whose service to medicine was acknowledged on Australia Day with the country’s highest civilian honour, says without the community he is nothing. The former World Medical Association chairman and Australian Medical Association president has been made a Companion of the Order of Australia. Dr Haikerwal, who in 2008 was near-fatally beaten while walking in his home suburb of Williamstown, said the experience helped him shape the National Health and Hospitals Reform Commission draft report – work he is
particularly proud of. He and wife Dr Karyn Alexander – who had stumbled across him and saved his life after he was assaulted and robbed – have worked with “the wonderful people of Altona North” since opening their own medical centre in 1991. “First and foremost, I am a GP, a local family doctor who serves his local community – this defines me,” Dr Haikerwal said. “It is a privilege to have as a basis, my foundation, the hard working people, the salt of the earth, the everyday folk who have come from every corner of the globe to live and work in our proudly diverse and multicultural region. They give so much to this great country.” The Indian-born, UK educated and trained
doctor said receiving such an honour was only made possible with support from those around him. “I would have achieved little without my chariots of fire – my professional colleagues from within medicine and from disciplines aligned to health, health care, welfare and service planning and delivery,” Dr Haikerwal said. Williamstown’s Dr Roger Mee, who in 1988 performed the first paediatric heart transplant in Australia, was made an Officer of the Order of Australia for distinguished service to medicine as a heart surgeon. Cash boost for western sports By Benjamin Millar
A journey into the universe
Inner-west sports grounds are receiving a welcome boost following the allocation of almost $700,000 from the state government. Henry Turner Reserve and Quarry Park in Footscray and Johnson Reserve in West Footscray are all set to benefit from the latest round of the government’s Community Sports Infrastructure Fund. Henry Turner Reserve is the biggest winner with $513,000 granted towards the demolition and rebuild of the reserve’s south pavilion. The upgrade will make it the west’s first facility capable of hosting premier gridiron, rugby and cricket competitions. The Western Crusaders Gridiron Club, Footscray Rugby Club and the Footscray Edgewater Cricket Club are among those that use the reserve. A further $100,000 will go towards upgrading the nearby Quarry Park to provide downhill mountain bike trails, a skills park and a “pump track” with technical features. A $75,000 grant for Johnson Reserve will fund floodlighting to comply with football specifications for all codes via four new 20-metre light towers.

Friday nights will be out of this world with films in the Melbourne Planetarium at Scienceworks. There will be two screenings every Friday in February and March, from 7.30pm and 9pm. The early film will be astronomy-focussed and followed by an immersive guided tour called “What’s in the sky tonight?” Scienceworks’ Kate Barnard said the films were projected on to a 16-metre dome. “It will take you on a journey into some aspects of our mind-boggling universe,” she said. The later films will be of the arthouse variety. “There’s a lot of super cool films that have been made for this special immersive environment of the dome,” Ms Barnard said. “For February, we’ve got Loco Dyna Morphics. It’s a science-art fusion … it’s taking these beautiful sound compositions and exploring the nine dimensions of space, time and form.” March’s late film, Jules Verne Voyages, is inspired by the novels of the man dubbed the father of science fiction. The Friday sessions are adults only. For details, visit museumsvictoria.com.au/ scienceworks

Two years for skull bash attack By Benjamin Millar A teen offender who fractured a man’s skull during a brazen attempted robbery has been sentenced to serve two years in youth detention over an attack that has left his victim mentally and physically scarred. The County Court last month heard the man, now 19, approached the victim outside his Footscray apartment block on May 9 last year and twice struck him on the back of the
head from behind with a 25-centimetre shifter. As the victim spun around and raised his hands, the man demanded “give me your shit” and struck him again above the right eye and on his raised hands, causing him to fall to the ground. He kept striking the victim until he was able to escape into a café next door as his attacker ran from the scene. The man was arrested on May 15 and admitted the offending, saying only that he needed the cash. Police arresting the man
found he was carrying a multi-tool with an axe head. Judge Peter Wischusen told him his actions had caused lasting “physical and mental damage to the victim”. “The blow to his head caused a fracture of his skull that required plating and screwing and caused the near complete detachment of the retina of his right eye, which had to be reattached by surgery,” he said. “Unsurprisingly, his sense of security has been greatly damaged by your actions and his
cautious and anxious approach to many aspects of what he used to regard as his ordinary day-to-day activities are described in detail in the victim impact statement.” The man pleaded guilty to one charge of attempted armed robbery, one charge of intentionally causing injury and a summary charge of possessing a prohibited weapon. He was convicted and sentenced to detention in a youth justice centre for a period of two years, minus time already served on remand.
Appeal in good health Williamstown Hospital will end its $2.2 million Heart of Williamstown appeal with a major raffle competition and a summer lunch. Former Victorian premier and appeal patron Steve Bracks will MC the lunch at the Royal Victorian Motor Yacht Club on February 25. “The support for the Heart of Williamstown appeal has been outstanding,” he said. “We are so close to our $2.2 million target thanks to the generosity of our local community. “The raffle and summer lunch will ensure we reach our target and commence work on the highly anticipated upgrade of Williamstown Hospital. “The summer lunch is a great way to celebrate the conclusion of the appeal, marking a new chapter in the proud history of our local hospital.” Raffle tickets, numbering just 4000, are on sale now and will be drawn on February 25. First prize is a $25,000 Nissan Juke ST sedan donated by Werribee Automotive Group, and
second prize is a $3000 seven-night Lorne getaway courtesy of Wayne and Sandy Sweeney and Mantra Lorne. The third-prize winner will add a dozen bottles of premium wine to their collection, with a $600 vintage wine package donated by Treasury Wine Estates. Raffle tickets at $20 can be bought from Williamstown, Sunshine and Footscray hospitals, Sweeney Estate Agent offices across the west and Williamstown businesses Filigree Jewellers, Jainus, Tulle Fashion and Eye Can C. Lunch tickets are $110 or $1100 for a table of 10. Proceeds from the raffle and lunch will go towards the appeal. Millie’s magical mix Mildred “Millie” Andrew celebrated her 103rd birthday on Australia Day, making her – it is believed – Hobsons Bay’s oldest resident. Born and raised in Williamstown before moving to Benetas St George’s in Altona Meadows, Mrs Andrew said her life was wonderful. The grandmother of two, who three years ago received an OAM for service to children with disabilities, said she had two rules. “One rule is, I never take worries to bed,” Mrs Andrew said. “I’ve got a curtain that I put across my mind as soon as I get into bed. “And the other one is, I’ve been going to bed regularly around about half past seven for years and years and years, so I have a good long sleep every night.”
6 MARIBYRNONG & HOBSONS BAY STAR WEEKLY \ JANUARY 31, 2018
Mrs Andrew was a carer and manager at the former Footscray Spastic Children’s Centre from 1953 to ’72, and helped raise funds for the Scope Chislon centre in Maidstone – for people with multiple disabilities and high support needs – where she was a carer for more than 20 years. “I haven’t been lucky, I’ve been blessed,” she said. “I’ve had a good life, God has blessed me with good health. I’ve only been in hospital once in my life – just overnight.” She cites the Great Depression of the 1930s as the worst experience of her life. “I was always hungry, I never had enough food,” she said. “But I’ve had good experiences.” Goya Dmytryshchak

Childcare centre plans unveiled By Benjamin Millar Plans have been revealed for a new childcare centre to be built on the site of the demolished Church Street Children’s Centre in West Footscray. Star Weekly last year reported the overall cost of redeveloping the centre has blown out to almost $6 million – close to three times the initial $2 million project budget for a redevelopment that was halted mid-2016 when builders discovered “serious structural design issues”.
Families using the centre were relocated to Maribyrnong Community Centre in 2016 and will remain there until at least the start of 2019. The new plans, developed for Maribyrnong Council by Four18 Architecture, show a two-storey, 98-place centre providing long day care with an integrated kindergarten. A planning permit application for the 1412 square-metre site suggested that the proposal would deliver a positive planning outcome “by improving and expanding services available to the community”. The application stated that the proposed
building would provide a design that incorporates the principles for environmentally sustainable development, with “an architectural presentation that provides a visual identity, a sense of place, to serve community need”. The environmentally sustainable design elements include green walls and natural ventilation. Proceeds from the sale of the now-closed Empire Street Early Learning Centre property will go towards funding the rebuild. Feedback on the plans should be lodged by February 2.

Shooting for nationals Rising netball star Elisa Gonebale has shone brightly on the national stage, helping the Victorian Aboriginal Seven Sisters Netball Team take out the Australian Indigenous School Girls Netball Tournament. The talented West Footscray netballer and her cousin Isabella, both 11, played starring roles in the recent tournament on the Gold Coast, helping the team rocket through the tournament undefeated. Elisa backed up the win with selection in the Australian Indigenous Schoolgirls Netball Team. The Victorian squad went through the eight-team tournament undefeated, taking out the grand final in a hard-fought match against NSW. The nine-member team, coached by Natarsha Bamblett, brought home Victoria’s first ever premiership in the decade-old competition. Elisa’s mother Helena Gonebale said all
members of the team backed up with a strong showing among 80 hopefuls in the try outs for the National Indigenous Netball Team. “Most of them got all the way to the final round of try outs, including Elisa and Bella, amongst some very stiff competition,” she said. “Five of the girls on our team were selected to go on and represent the Budgies – one in the 13s and the other four in the 12A Squad – Elisa was one of those four and is excited now for the next tournament later this year.” Ms Gonebale said the girls battled heat, nerves, illness, injury, fear and doubt but gave it everything they had. “They certainly did their families and community proud, that’s for sure,” she said. Elisa is fundraising to return to the Gold Coast as part of the Budgies later this year. Details: www.gofundme.com/ElisaNational Benjamin Millar

Uni change leads to more offers By Tate Papworth Victoria University is lauding its newly introduced first year learning model following a significant spike in the number of first round offers it was able to make. In total, the university made 3804 first round offers through the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre. The number is a 6.5 per cent increase in the number of offers made by the university last year, despite the university having the same or, in some cases, higher entry requirements for
courses in 2018 and fewer courses on offer. The rise is the largest recorded among Victoria’s nine universities. Victoria University vice chancellor Peter Dawkins attributed the rise to the new teaching model. “This is a strong endorsement for our new First Year teaching model which will be unique to Australia,” Professor Dawkins said. “The system of learning, which has been used throughout Sweden for 50 years and for more than 40 years in parts of North America, maximises the ability of students to master
each unit of study.” Rather than juggling four study units throughout a 16-week semester, first year students at the university complete one unit every four weeks, studying in smaller groups with one lecturer. “The new teaching model excited a lot of VCE students when we visited secondary colleges,” Professor Dawkins said. “It will be great for them as they transition from school to university and are able to see exactly how they are tracking every four weeks.” Nursing proved to be the most popular course among school leavers, with 458 first
round offers made for the university’s bachelor of nursing course. Bachelor of business (255), bachelor of paramedicine (229) and bachelor of education (160) rounded out the top four. While the new teaching model is designed to benefit school leavers, Professor Dawkins said mature age students will also enjoy its advantages. “Juggling work or home responsibilities with university can be a challenge but this teaching model, which we have seen first-hand, has shown us how much more helpful this learning model is.”
Altona hub on the way The first sod has been turned to mark the start of construction on the $6.9 million Altona Early Years Hub. Early Childhood Education Minister Jenny Mikakos visited the site on the Grieve Parade campus of Altona P-9 College for the occasion last week. The state government has contributed $1.6 million to the project. Ms Mikakos said the government wanted “new and improved kinders”. “The new Altona Early Years Hub at Altona College P-9 will make school drop-off times much easier for local families and help young children transition to school,” she said. Mayor Angela Altair said the centre would have 76 long day care and 99 kindergarten places, maternal and child health services, health consulting rooms, meeting spaces and a multi-purpose community space. “The hub will support children from birth
well into high school, all co-located on the site of the Altona P-9 College – providing a one-stop-shop for families,” she said. “We know from our own experience at the Newport Gardens Early Years Hub, as well as research in best practice from around the world, that the hub model with integrated services really works and we can’t wait to introduce this first-class facility to Altona.” She said enrolments were being taken now, with the hub expected to open next January. Children’s author Andy Griffiths has been named Hobsons Bay Citizen of the Year. Griffiths, who wrote Australia’s bestselling book of 2015, The 65-Storey Treehouse, moved to Williamstown from St Kilda in 2002 seeking a quieter pace of living. He never planned for the “good fortune” of having the Williamstown Literary Festival start on his doorstep the following year. Griffiths said he was thrilled to have been able to serve the community by participating in the festival every year bar one, as well presenting at last year’s inaugural Write by the Bay awards. “I love doing the festival,” he said. “That’s just been something you do because you want your community to be as good as it can and for the children in that community to benefit from what we can bring as writers.”

MY PLACE Seabrook’s Abbey Brown, who coaches the Altona Junior Football Club under-15s girls and was instrumental in starting the Laverton Magpies women’s football team, was named Hobsons Bay Young Citizen of the Year on Australia Day. What’s your connection to Hobsons Bay?
the sea. We’re just in a really good spot.
I’m 23 and I’ve been living in my house in Seabrook for 20 years. Previous to that, I was living as a young baby in Altona Meadows. I was involved in the community in what programs I could do at school. I thoroughly enjoy volunteering and giving back and helping other people. I started out coaching at Altona Junior Football Club and new opportunities came up through that. Through working with AFL Vic, I got the opportunity to work with Laverton Football Club. Through that I heard that they were trying to get a women’s team … having played football before, I really wanted to give what I could and guide them and help them.
What would you change?
What do you like about Seabrook?
I would just say if you’re passionate about something, make sure you get involved. I know, personally, women’s football has just taken off recently, but it’s been something that I’ve loved for a long time. I think life’s too short and it’s important to do the things that make you happy and to share your passion … I think most times, you’ll find that there are people out there who are the same. Start something new if it’s not out there.
What’s your favourite local cafe or eatery? I love Stella’s in Altona. That’s where we always go for dinner usually – birthdays and events like that. I love their pizza and pasta. As Hobsons Bay’s Young Citizen of the Year, would you have any advice for other young people or young women in particular?
(Marco De Luca)
We live along Skeleton Creek, so I love that it’s really open. It’s close to everything. I grew up on the corner of a court, so my childhood was fantastic – always outside, kicking a football, playing sports and games with all the kids in the street. I think now that I’m driving, that bit older, it’s still just really nice because I’m close enough to

Norman’s new ranking Honour for a theatre pioneer A pioneer of touring outdoor theatre in Australia, Seaholme’s Glenn Elston was made an officer of the Order of Australia for his service to the performing arts. His productions of Shakespeare and The Wind in the Willows have been seen by more than a million people in Australia and are now performed in London’s Kew Gardens. The producer and artistic director of the Australian Shakespeare Company also established the Young Bards education program to make theatre accessible for children. Mr Elston said theatre was crucial for personal development and self reflection, citing a Warren Buffett documentary as an example. “He said the thing I’m most proud of is that I made myself go and do a speech and drama course, which I completed and it changed my life. “I can’t think of a better example of how one man who goes on to be the richest man in the world – also the biggest philanthropist in the world – gives tribute to the value of culture through theatre, through participating in communicating with other people.” Goya Dmytryshchak
By Goya Dmytryshchak Third-generation seafarer, Williamstown’s Warwick Norman has been made a Member of the Order of Australia for service to international shipping. The Australia Day honour particularly recognises his work in improving international maritime safety standards. In 2001, Mr Norman founded maritime safety organisation RightShip, vetting ships to lift safety standards and identify high-risk vessels in the dry bulk, petroleum, chemical and gas sectors. His company originally served two shareholders and now has 300 customers worldwide. In 2010, RightShip launched a greenhouse gas emissions rating for ships, which is now used as a selection tool for 20 per cent of vessels by organisations that take into account environmental sustainability in chartering decisions. Every year since 2012, Mr Norman has made Lloyd’s List of the ‘100 Most Influential People in the Shipping Industry’. In 2013, he was named Prime Minister’s Australian Exporter of the Year and the following year, Australian Export Hero. Mr Norman said he came from a maritime family, starting out as a seafarer cadet. “I was a ship’s captain at sea and then came ashore and worked in management and then came in to this role here,” he said. “My father operated in the old tugs that used to be in Williamstown so even as a child I was out around ships. “Dad was a war orphan so he ran away to sea. “His father had been in the Merchant Navy before that.” Mr Norman said one of his teachers at

Williamstown High School, Dennis Nilson had fostered a very strong maritime culture in class. “In fact, when I sat my Masters certificate at RMIT many years after, there were three guys who had come through Williamstown High School so Dennis had been part of fostering that interest as well.” Mr Norman said he felt “humbled” to be recognised in the Australia Day honours. Laverton’s white Knight By Goya Dmytryshchak Anne Knight moved to Laverton with her Air Force husband in the early 80s, but they split soon after their youngest son was born. Having nowhere to live and three children to support, Mrs Knight turned to the Altona Meadows/Laverton Uniting Church and became an advocate for low-income housing. On Australia Day, she was made an officer of the Order for Australia for service to the Laverton community. “Community housing has been a big part of my life because I was a single mum with kids so young,” she said. “My ex was still in the Air Force when my marriage broke up and I had a tiny baby. “Through necessity, I got involved with lobbying for more public housing. “That led to being involved in setting up the Common Equity Rental Housing program, which started 30 years ago as a federally funded program to set up housing co-operatives.” Now a church elder, she reads liturgy and teaches Sunday school. She has also chaired the Laverton Community Association and was also a founding member of the Laverton Community Garden. In 1992, at age 42, she went back to university and earned a nursing degree becoming a disability instructor with Mambourin Enterprises. More recently, she became involved in the Epsom Street project which aims to build social housing on the former Laverton primary school site. “I see what I do in the community as living my Christian faith,” Mrs Knight said. “The things I’ve been involved in are very much, one thing’s led to another in terms of where my life was at the time.”
Dedicated to community Everyone is looking for their tribe, says Therese McKenney, whose service to the community has been recognised with an OAM. The third-time Rotary Club of Altona president and head of the Newport Community Education Centre (Outlets) arrived in Hobsons Bay 33 years ago as a sole parent with a one-year-old son. She started tutoring at Outlets before becoming chief executive and community economic development officer in 1988. Ms McKenney has been with Rotary for 15 years and the Newport Traders Association for 12 years. She was also on the Bayside Festival committee for 14 years. “There are so many people who are alone and you don’t even know they’re alone,” she said. “But you’re not alone – there’s someone else there with a story, there’s someone else that needs that friendship. “Life is accepting community. Everyone’s looking for their tribe.” Ms McKenney said she was “shellshocked” to receive the medal. “I actually felt so unworthy of it,” she said. “I’m grateful for it and I’m extremely honoured.” Anne Knight was awarded an OAM for service to the Laverton community. FB: How would you rate your cooking skills? SV: Average at best, although I was at one point trained by a world renowned, international food establishment ... er, would you like fries with that? FB: What is your signature dish? SV: I’m really just your average meat and three veg kind of cook. I do, however, make a picture perfect round of Vegemite on toast most mornings. It’s a science in itself, you know. FB: If you could only have one more meal, what would it be? SV: It’s gotta be a large, deep dish stuffed crust pizza from Giordano’s in Chicago. Pepperoni, mushrooms, green peppers & onions. Enough calories to feed a small, starving nation in just one serve. FB: What is your favourite TV food show and who is your favourite TV food person? SV: I’ve become a bit of a fan of the Great British Bake Off. The laid back and friendly production style is great, and not having prizes at the end means it just has a really nice feel to it. My favourite TV food personality is Nigella Lawson. FB: What is your favourite food? SV: Pizza. Ask anyone who knows me. It’s an addiction, I tell ya! FB: What is your favourite drink? SV: I’m not much of a drinker really, and I enjoy the ribbing I get for the occasional light beer I might have. Favourite drink overall is chocolate milk. Also, I heard once that too much coffee is a bad thing ... I mean, seriously? FB: Which 5 people would you most like to invite to dinner? SV: My Dad Bert. He passed away in 2002. What I wouldn’t give to have one more day with him. Also Clint Eastwood, John Travolta (anyone who has their own Boeing 707 is pretty cool by my standards), Chuck Yeager and Neil Mitchell - he inspired my passion for talk radio. FB: Do you have a kitchen tip for us? SV: Yep, and this one is really handy for the blokes out there, who, like me, tend to get themselves into a little kitchen trouble at times. The best way to remove that black, baked on, burnt gunk from the bottom of that pot you accidentally let boil dry (before your wife gets home and finds it) is: 1. Fill the bottom of the pan with a layer of water. 2. Add 1 cup of vinegar. As always, if you anyadd 2 tablespoons of baking soda. 4. Remove the pan from thehave heat and 5. Empty the pantips and or scour as normal; if necessary add an extra bit of dry recipes, other baking soda. It works absolute charm … allegedly. info you’d likeliketoanshare,

Is there an old kitchen relic that brings back special memories for you? For me it’s a heart-shaped cake tin, given to my mum by her mother-in-law (Granny Pat) just after she married my dad. This tin was used for countless cakes throughout my childhood. My mum made her own birthday cake in it one year, and used a wooden skewer to scratch the number 38 in the icing. I found out years later it was actually her 40th birthday but she couldn’t bear the thought of anyone else finding out. On one occasion she forgot to grease the tin. This usually entailed smearing it with a great big wodge of Meadow Lea margarine to stop the cake from sticking (obviously baking paper wasn’t much of a thing back in the early 70s!) The cake ended up stuck to the pan – she was literally left with a broken heart! I used the same tin to bake a cake for my year 10 home eco project. Somebody knocked my elbow while I was adding the food colouring to my icing … instead of a pale lemon colour, it came out radioactive yellow. I was staying at my mum’s house this week and I stumbled across the heart-shaped tin. It must be more than 80 years old now. It seemed only fitting to make mum’s 83rd birthday cake in it. It was simple, it was pretty (thanks to the Dr Oetker sugar daisies I bought in the supermarket baking aisle) and it brought back some lovely memories.

Energy customers are seeing their bills head north more and more. But if you do your homework, it’s possible to save more than $450 a year. Energy companies are beginning to offer up to 30 per cent discounts on usage rates when bills are paid on time. One energy company, for example, is offering a “Secure Saver” option that provides a competitive pay-on-time

Smart thinking can help unplug the pain of rising energy bills discount and protects customers from increases in charges for usage and supply for two years.
when you use it. Make sure you negotiate a discount – offers of, say, 30 per cent when you pay on time can mean big savings.
Other things customers can do to avoid paying more for energy include:
2. The cheapest energy is the energy you don’t use. Turn off appliances at the wall, switch off lights when you leave a room, replace old 50W light globes with LED lights, block draughts, close off rooms you’re not using
1. Shop around and get on the right plan for you. Understand how much energy you use and
and choose energy-efficient appliances. 3. Fix your energy rates to beat price rises. Talk turkey with your energy provider – many will reward you for loyalty and maintaining timely payments for long periods. If they won’t negotiate, think about changing companies – and make sure you inform your current provider about what you’re considering.

FOOD REVIEW
CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir enjoys a new twist on Sri Lankan food THE WHITE ELEPHANT Address: 561 Barkly Street, West Foostcray Phone: 0423 515 728 But, as Bennie later opines, there is a strong element of same-same about it that suggests it would be more enjoyed as a smaller side. One of the main things Bennie enjoys about Sri Lankan food is the ability to order pork. His pork curry here is similar to those he’s enjoyed elsewhere – dry, charry, enjoyable. But beware – its is very, very fatty. My lamprais ($17) is something entirely different. I’ve enjoyed other versions of this very traditional Sri Lankan meal – cooked in a banana leaf – but never quite this hearty. The stars are a couple of fat charred, juicy and supremely delicious prawns. There’s an orb of tuna cutlet and a heap of chicken and the same pork as in Bennie’s curry. The chicken is overcooked by Western, charcoal grill standards, but that is – I strongly suspect – entirely normal for this dish. My meal is so meaty, so macho that the phrase “meat lovers comes to mind – something more usually associated with pizzas. As well, the fried egg – very good – lends the dish something of the aspect of an old-school English fry-up.

The White Elephant brings a real point of difference to Indian-dominated West Footscray, and is doing so with style. We found the service very attentive and the wait times perfectly appropriate for the food at hand. Our first glances at the menu are quite bracing in terms of price, based on our long enjoyment of extremely affordable Sri Lankan food at a variety of places. But closer perusal of the food list reveals some outright cheaper gems. Three rotis, one veg curry and one meat curry for $12, for instance. Or a rice-and-curry combo of two veg curries and one meat curry for $15. Justin is delighted with his curry combo deal. The curry deals can be customised according to customer wishes – rather than being a mix of whatever the staff choose out in the kitchen. The mild beef curry is some way short of tender, but not tough, either – perfectly normal and acceptable for this kind of food. The eggplant moju disappears at pace. But it is the potato curry that is the star – so simple and tasty! It is a vegetable selection that shines brightest in Bennie’s line-up, as well. The okra dish is as good as we’ve enjoyed. The vegetable holds its vibrant greenness, is not in the least cooked down and shows not the slightest sign of sliminess. We’re all taken with the cashew curry, which is way more creamy and moist than the photograph suggests.

SPORT Riders kick off early to beat the heat got and I don’t care if we win or not, as long as everyone has given it all.” Lackmann and Matt Arthur did the lion’s share of the work, with Steve Moses probably the next best contributor. Nonetheless, all seven riders emptied their tanks and left nothing in reserve to hold off the bunch. “As long as I have given it everything I will go home happy,” Lackmann said. Yarraville resident Toby Newton took out D-grade, taking a strong bunch sprint win. “The race seemed to string out pretty quickly,” Newton said. “There were a few of us really putting the pressure on at the front and I was busy following the wheel and trying not to lose concentration. “It feels awesome to get my first win and I will definitely be back.” Gina McVicar claimed the D-grade women’s race from Jill Stevenson. Being the last bunches to race, A and
C-grades had to contend with the hottest of the conditions. In C-grade, Kensington resident and Brunswick rider Daniel Morgan took out a strong win after a perfect last-lap leadout from his fellow Brunswick rider Shaun Scource. “Shaun took all the wind for me on the last lap and I took advantage of that and pulled out ahead at the end,” Morgan said. Morgan finished ahead of Raphael Hammond, with Scource holding on to third place. A-grade saw a heap of riders shelled in the hardest and hottest race of the day. Eventual winner Dom Dudkiewicz ruled once again. Even Dudkiewicz was feeling the heat and struggling in the extreme conditions. “That headwind just kept getting stronger and hotter every lap and it had a compounding effect on riders,” he said. Rams rock to super win By Lance Jenkinson Newport Rams have put their full potential on display in a shock 14-0 mercy rule win over Melbourne Demons in the Baseball Victoria summer league division 1. The Rams are rock bottom in the west conference and the Demons are top ranked in the east, but it was almost a reversal of roles as the Rams toyed with one of the premiership contenders throughout the game at KC White Reserve on Sunday. Nobody in their wildest dreams would have predicted such a scoreline before play – nobody except Rams catcher Dean Malthouse. “I have some pretty wild dreams, so I think we should be winning like that every week,” Malthouse said. “It’s a reminder to us that when we put all that hard work in and you get to the weekend and have a couple of things go your way, we can put up some big numbers.” Newport’s pitching numbers have stacked up favourably against most teams in the competition this season. Six shut-out innings from import Riley Barr certainly helped their cause in keeping the Demons scoreless. Simon Fitzmaurice threw the final inning before the umpires called the mercy rule to end the game after the seventh. What the Rams have lacked on occasions is sufficient run support, but they got that in spades against the Demons. “I think we put on seven runs in the third inning,” Malthouse said. “Once that happens, you give yourself a bit of a buffer and you can kind of relax a little … just play your game, rather than pressing on every single game.” The Rams got hits up and down the line-up, their batters executing their plans to perfection. “There were great at-bats,” Malthouse said. “Even the first two innings – we didn’t score in them, but we weren’t leaving good pitches or swinging and letting the pitcher off the hook. “We were putting good, hard contact on the ball and eventually it broke apart and we scored a bunch of runs in the third. “We put down bunts, we had timely hitting with runners in scoring positions – something we hadn’t done at all this year. It just built from there.” Newport remains on the bottom of its conference, but still has plenty of games to make up ground on the top four teams in the competition. The Rams could still finish as high as second, such is the closeness of the competition.
IN THE DOGHOUSE ■ Kevin Atkinson and Wayne Connor are not names that many Bulldogs supporters of the last few decades would be aware of, but last week both were very rightly made Life Members of the Western Bulldogs. Both men have given years of service to the club in the stats area of the football department. I still see them both at the past players and officials function at home games. The debate about premiership players receiving instant Life Membership is interesting, with Brian Lake the classic example of someone who won three premierships with Hawthorn but wants to be remembered as a Bulldogs Life Member and a Hawks premiership player. That seems right to me. Does Joel Hambling deserve to be a Bulldogs Life member (23 games, 1 premiership)? I think not. Well done to Kevin and Wayne and also Gary Kent, Easton Wood and Simon Dalrymple who were also honoured. ■ The Werribee Park Golf Club won’t be hosting the Legends Pro Am this year, having decided to channel the funds into the new members’ lounge extension. Last year the club underwrote the event and while it was a success, the board thought the funds best suited to something all members could enjoy. It will be interesting to see how golfers adapt to the proposed rule changes that are being trialled between now and next year. Most are aimed at speeding up the game and making some very convoluted rules more practical and easier to interpret (AFL football please note). It looks very sensible to me. ■ Yarraville Cricket Club sits just outside the six in the senior subbies competition at the moment after a stirring win over Plenty Valley last weekend. Their final three games of the season give them a real chance of playing finals as they play sides below them on the ladder. On Friday February 23rd they will be holding the annual President’s luncheon at Peckish @ Yarraville Club in Stephen Street from 12.30. Comedian Dave O’Neil will be holding court with guest speaker Wayne B Phillips. This is the Wayne Phillips from South Australia who played 27 tests and 48 ODI’s for Australia, not the Victorian opener. Wayne is a very entertaining speaker with some hilarious stories. Bookings are available through Rod Wood on 0407357 121 or rod.wood@toyota. com.au
Kevin Hillier Any news, let me know on email kevin@howdypartnersmedia.com.au. Follow me on Twitter @KevinHillier, plus check out the Howdy Partners Media website as well. Newport Rams starting pitcher Riley Barr kept the visitors scoreless for six innings. (Mark Wilson)
“You win a couple in a row or lose a couple in a row and you can either be fighting for play-offs or fighting to avoid relegation,” Malthouse said. “We’re down in the bottom part of the ladder, but if we win two or three games we’ll be right back up to potentially finishing in the top two in our division. “I think we’re a chance in every game, so we have a good shot of stringing a few wins

together and maybe sneaking into the play-offs and causing a bit of damage.” Newport will hit the road on Sunday to face another east conference power, Blackburn Orioles, at Billabong Park on Sunday. In women’s division 1, Footscray went down 3-1 to Essendon in a tight game at KC White Reserve on Saturday. The Bulldogs remain third on the ladder, one win back from the Bombers.

In an effort to avoid the worst of the day’s heat, riders in the 22nd round of Footscray Cycling Club’s summer criterium season made their way to Drake Boulevard in Altona for an early start on Sunday. The E-graders were first on the circuit with Charlotte Morison taking the win from John Moses and Abby McGrath taking a well-earned third place. The B and D-grade races were up next in the heat with St Kilda rider Broder Lackmann taking the B-Grade win, having put in a massive workload to establish a breakaway at the 25 minute mark. “I have never raced this course before but it has a few good sections where you can get out of sight pretty quickly, so I thought today would be a good day to get a few blokes and go up the road and everyone was quite willing to roll a turn,” Lackmann said. “My favourite thing is to be in a breakaway where everyone is just giving it what they’ve

Bulldogs fired up for maximum effort A high five from Lucas Dredge has Footscray primed for an assault on an outright result against a dismal Casey-South Melbourne in the Victorian Premier Cricket. Dredge was back to his devastating best for the Bulldogs, taking 5-17 off seven overs at Casey Fields to destroy the Swans’ middle and lower orders and leave the hosts all out for 61. Bulldogs captain Dylan Kight was full of praise for the bowler. “He was just bowling fast and getting it in the right areas,” Kight said. “He came back from an injury this year. He’s been taking it slowly but surely to get it right, but he’s making up for lost ground now.” The early damage was inflicted by Footscray’s new-ball operators Hamish Winter-Irving and Jonah Koch. Winter-Irving took 2-23 off nine overs, including four maidens, while Koch went one better with 3-20 off seven overs.
So damaging was Footscray’s bowling attack, it sent down only 23 overs in a nice freshen-up for the team. The main beneficiary of the impressive bowling was wicketkeeper Kight, who took five catches and none of the acrobatic kind. “They put it in the right areas, made them play and – lucky enough – they nicked a lot of balls,” Kight said. “They were all pretty straightforward catches.” Footscray was never going to miss out on first-innings points, but the rest of the day was about positioning itself for a run at an outright. The Bulldogs were a bit scratchy early in their innings, passing the target three down, but once first innings points were under lock and key they hit the launch button. Greg Munro’s 38 off 51 got the Bulldogs past the target before Kight (85 off 76) and Hayden Butterworth (54 off 79) accelerated the scoring.
Kight is one of the form batsmen in the competition with 624 runs at an average of 69.3. He admits that he missed out on a “golden chance” to get his first century since round two, but he can’t complain as his knock alone out-scored the whole Swans team. Footscray declared at 7-231, a lead of 170 with a massive 24 overs to bowl late on day one. “We were able to declare a lot earlier than we planned on,” Kight said. “We wanted to give ourselves at least 20 overs to bowl at them.” Batting for a second time, Casey-South Melbourne finished the day on 4-62, still trailing by 108 runs. Lance Jenkinson Footscray fast bowler Lucas Dredge took five wickets. (Shawn Smits)
Clubbers strike early By Lance Jenkinson Yarraville Club came out breathing fire against Keilor in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association senior division at Keilor Recreation Reserve on Saturday. The top-of-the-ladder Clubbers were eager to atone for a rare loss the week prior and hit back to pave the way for what should be a comfortable win on the second day. The Clubbers rolled Keilor for just 152 in 54 overs and responded with 1-64 to require just 89 runs for a first innings victory. “The boys were pretty spot on from the get go,” Clubbers player-coach Justin Baker said. “To come out with that sort of result after day one, we’re reasonably happy, the boys did well.” Emmett Bronca led the way for Yarraville Club with 3-30 off 14 overs. Bronca and new ball partner Hussain Hanif, who took 1-16 off eight overs, set the tone with some sharp bowling. It was Bronca’s consistency that put a smile on the face of his teammates. “To see ‘Broncs’ bounce back to way that he did was great,” Baker said. “He bowled very tight and found his length.” Adam Contessa picked up a handy 2-2 off four overs for Yarraville Club, while there was a wicket apiece for Will Sheridan, Joey Blake and Konrad Kurta. The Clubbers lost Jonathon Blake for one with the score on 1-4, before James Damjanovski (25 not out) and Kurta (24 not out) combined for 60 to take the score to 1-64 at stumps. “Credit to Keilor’s bowlers, they really put us under the pump for those 26 overs late in the day,” Baker said. There was a bit of drama when Damjanovski was given out caught by the central umpire. With Damjanovski on his way to the pavilion, the umpires convened and recalled him back. “The decision got overturned and that’s something I’ve never seen in all my years of playing cricket,” Baker said. “He copped a short one, he went to pull it and it hit him on the forearm and was caught by the fielder. The bowling end umpire gave it out, but the square leg umpire said it clearly hit him on the forearm and called him back.” Elsewhere, Spotswood has made a strong start against Doutta Stars at McLean Reserve. The Woodsmen bowled the Stars out for 183 and made 1-36 before stumps. Seddon faces an interesting clash with Strathmore at Hanmer Reserve. The Dockers are 5-69 in response to the Mores’ 124. In north west division, Druids and Laverton are locked in a tussle at Laverton Park. Druids could only manage 178, but hit back with two late wickets to leave Laverton at 2-10. Altona North has plenty of work to do after posting just 153 against West Coburg at Morris McDonald Reserve. The Burgers are 0-18 in their run chase. In the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association, Altona had a massive 179-run
Katie Brennan in action with the Darebin Falcons last season. (Wayne Ludbey/Fairfax)

win over Preston at Frank Kirk Oval to keep its finals flame flickering. The A’s posted 9-336 on the back of twins tons from import Charlie Best (134) and Shane Jones (113). Shannon Clarke took 4-18 off 14.3 to leave Preston in ruins, all out for 157. Williamstown moved up to second with an win over St Bernard’s at the Murphy Oval. Holding a 35-run lead on first innings, the
Seagulls bowled out St Bernard’s for 156, leaving themselves 122 for victory. The Seagulls passed the target in the 29th over with three wickets in hand. Yarraville had a monster run chase, passing Plenty Valley’s 8-296 in the last over of the day. Eagles captain Matthew Love made 115, while Joe Billings (50) and Bradley Shaw (51) made half centuries.
Katie Brennan spent most of her inaugural AFL Women’s campaign as a leadership voice on the sidelines for the Western Bulldogs. The 25-year-old was restricted to just two matches after an ankle injury wiped out nearly all of her AFLW campaign. In spite of the obvious disappointment of missing most of the season, Brennan was able to have a positive influence on the Bulldogs in an off-field capacity and has been rewarded with a second year as captain. After Bulldogs coach Paul Groves announced the leadership group to the rest of the team last week, including the appointment of Ellie Blackburn as vice-captain and Nicole Callinan and Hannah Scott as the other members of the four-player group, Brennan told her teammates that she was “very humbled” to be able to lead the team again. “Thank you for trusting me for a second year,” she said. Brennan is desperate to get back out on to the field and lead by example. The Darebin Falcons recruit has the potential to be one of the premier key forwards in the competition, but needs a clear run from a health standpoint. Ups and downs are part and parcel of the competition, as Brennan knows all too well. While she experienced more downs because of her injury, it was still one hell of a ride for her and the team. “There’s downs, there’s challenges, there’s hardships, there’s triumphs – you feel so many emotions within the small eight-week block and it’s an incredible ride,” she said. “This year I’m going to do everything in my power to stay out there with you and give it my all, lead by example and do everything that I think a leader should be.” The AFL Women’s season will open on Friday night. The Bulldogs will play their season opener against the Fremantle Dockers at the Victoria University Whitten Oval this Sunday from 4.35pm. Lance Jenkinson
