Pint-sized stars join elite
(Damjan Janevski)
Pint-sized dancers from TDC (The Dance Company) at Spotswood have been crowned Australian champions in the prestigious Hollywood Bound National Dance Championships run by industry veteran Peter Oxford. More than 80 students from TDC travelled to Sydney to compete against some of Australia’s finest performing arts schools. The youngest dance troupe, the Mini Elites, was awarded first place for routines in four divisions. The 16 members, aged 5 to 8, went on to win the overall Battle Of the Stars championship with a performance of When She Loved Me from Disney’s Toy Story. They won a cash prize and a trip to Thailand for their teachers. Two other TDC teams were named national champions in their divisions, while two senior students were named Dancer Of The Year in their categories, winning a trip to Italy and New York respectively. TDC director Lisa Anne Hammer said she was “beyond proud” of her students. “Their love and passion for performing arts astounds me,” she said. “I see so much value in dance competitions for young kids as it helps them develop their confidence and skills in a supportive environment.” Goya Dmytryshchak

A young Footscray couple is fighting a last-ditch battle to remain in Australia to continue a desperate struggle with advanced breast cancer. Yousra Alamgir was diagnosed with stage four (metastatic) breast cancer last July and has been undergoing extensive treatment to tackle the cancer, which has also spread to her lungs. The masters student, originally from Bangladesh, has been living and studying in Melbourne since 2013. She had only one subject left to complete her degree and become eligible to apply for permanent residence, but the diagnosis halted her study and her visa is due to run out in
March, along with the spouse visa held by her husband, Shaifi Moazzem. Ms Alamgir said Melbourne felt like her home and that she was worried about her chances of survival if she was forced to return to Bangladesh. Her cancer has a less than one-in-four survival rate over five years. “I’m having a good treatment,” she said. “I trust them, I believe in them and – most importantly – I feel like things are improving so I don’t want to change it.” Mr Moazzem is attempting to secure sponsorship from his employer to remain in Australia, but Ms Alamgir’s health problems are proving a complicated hurdle. “There is a health criteria in immigration and

The keen cricketer, who represented Bangladesh as a junior, recently shared news of the pair’s struggle with teammates at the Footscray-Edgewater Cricket Club. The club immediately swung into action and has raised more than $8000 through a GoFundMe page in less than a week to go towards paying the pair’s health and legal costs. It has also organised a March for Marty fundraiser (Marty is Mr Moazzem’s nickname) at Merv G Hughes Oval in Footscray from 10.30am this Sunday, followed by a T20 game of past and present players from 1pm. Police probe unit fire
Western MP calls it a day
By Benjamin Millar A West Footscray woman remains in hospital in a serious condition with severe burns after being rescued from a house fire. MFB firefighters rescued the unconscious woman from the Barkly Street unit just after 7.15pm last Thursday. The firefighters were on the scene in less than five minutes and provided emergency medical support for the woman until Ambulance Victoria officers arrived.

We are still investigating what has actually happened - Di Dale here
’’
The woman, 52, sustained serious burns to about 40 per cent of her body and was taken to The Alfred hospital with life-threatening injuries. A man who kicked in a window in an attempt to rescue the woman sustained a severe laceration and was taken to hospital for treatment. Fire crews also rescued a dog from the single storey unit and another which had broken its leg trying to escape from the backyard. About 25 firefighters took 20 minutes to bring the blaze under control. The front room was severely damaged by fire and the remainder of the unit was affected by smoke and water damage. MFB’s specialist fire investigators and detectives from Victoria Police’s Arson and Explosives Squad are investigating the fire but it is not being treated as suspicious. Detective Senior Constable Di Dale from the Arson and Explosives Squad said the

fire broke out in a room at the front of the unit. “It is confined to one area of the premises. The investigation is ongoing,” Detective Senior Constable Dale said. “We are still investigating what has actually happened here, we don’t know the fine-grain details at this stage. “We are still analysing the scene … we are making further avenues of inquiry.”
The incident follows another fire in West Footscray about 5pm last Wednesday. Crews arrived at the fire on Geelong Road shortly after 5pm to find a brick veneer and weatherboard single storey house well alight. The fire was brought under control within five minutes of crews arrival. The fire was deemed suspicious and police are investigating.
Western suburbs MLC Colleen Hartland, who was one of the first Greens to be elected to the Victorian Parliament, has announced she will step down within weeks. She will be replaced by Huong Truong, who will become the first Vietnamese Australian woman to sit in an Australian parliament. Ms Hartland, 58, has represented the Western Metropolitan Region in the state’s upper house since 2006, when she joined Sue Pennicuik and Greg Barber as Victoria’s first Greens MPs. The former Maribyrnong councillor announced last year that she would not be standing in November’s state election, but said on Monday that she would step down early due to exhaustion and the job’s toll on her health. “Making this decision was something I have thought about over the last year,” she said. “I’m someone who gives everything 100 per cent and I have just got to that stage where the exhaustion means I can only give 90 per cent.” Ms Truong, who grew up in Maidstone and Sunshine, is the daughter of Vietnamese refugees and has vowed to raise the voice of the unheard in Parliament. The mother of two said Ms Hartland has been “working really bloody hard for 11 years” and she understood her decision to step down. Benjamin Millar

Feral goats on the loose By Goya Dmytryshchak A herd of feral goats believed to have originated from an abattoir is eating its way through more than $100,000 of vegetation along the banks of Kororoit Creek at Brooklyn. In 2013, about 60 feral goats were removed from the area. Friends of Lower Kororoit Creek president Geoff Mitchelmore said either some had slipped through the net or more had since escaped and bred, with a herd of about 50 now living on the old Brooklyn tip owned by Pelligra Group. He said Melbourne Water had spent more than $100,000 of people’s water rates over the past three years on planting many thousands of trees and shrubs along the creek. “All of these thousands of indigenous trees and shrubs have been eaten by a reported 50 or so feral goats that have made their home at Old Geelong Road, Brooklyn, the old landfill site previously owned by Cleanaway, now Pelligra Group,” Mr Mitchelmore said. “City Circle Demolition, Brooklyn, through its environmental program, have thousands of indigenous trees and shrubs ready to plant along Kororoit Creek but cannot because the goats will destroy them.” Mr Mitchelmore said his group and Friends of Kororoit Creek wanted Pelligra to remove the feral goats and install rabbit-proof fencing along its four property boundaries. City Circle manager Matt Skidmore said planting was due to begin in April or May. “But due to the wild goat population in the area, we’re going to plant a 20-metre trial area and then we’re going to see what effect because in the past, with Melbourne Water and with us, a lot of our planting has been destroyed by the goat population,” he said. Melbourne Water’s Ben English said since

2009 up to 10,000 native trees and bushes had been planted on the eastern banks of Kororoit Creek at Brooklyn. “Unfortunately, a significant number of these plants have been destroyed or damaged by feral goats in the area,” he said. “A collaborative effort to control the goats was successful in 2013, but a new group of goats is now roaming freely on privately-owned land
between Somerville Road and Old Geelong Road. This land directly adjoins the east bank of Kororoit Creek. “This land is not owned by Melbourne Water and it is the responsibility of the land owner to control pest animals on their property under the Catchment and Land Protection Act.” A Pelligra representative said no one was available to comment.

Rail contract rebuilds lives Disadvantaged young people will be employed to maintain the Newport Rail Academy under a three-year partnership between the state government and YMCA Rebuild. The academy was established in 2007 to train Victoria’s rail and tram workers. YMCA ReBuild manager Gary Sinclair said the contract would give many disadvantaged young people multiple training pathways. “They will have the opportunity to be rotated through this contract to provide experience in areas such as landscaping, painting, at-heights work including window and gutter cleaning, and general maintenance,” he said. “Companies can make a discernible difference to the community by engaging social enterprises like ReBuild that provide commercial services such as landscaping, painting and maintenance whilst simultaneously targeting a range of social issues such as those faced by young offenders.” Industry and Employment Minister Ben Carroll said that through the partnership, supervisors would work one-on-one with young trainees. Work would include maintaining the gardens and fences, carpentry repairs and painting. Crews will also fit-out a new classroom in the academy’s high-voltage substation where students will learn how to maintain Melbourne’s train network. Goya Dmytryshchak

An exhibition of works by art and music pioneer Genesis Breyer P-Orridge (pictured) will be displayed in an exclusive Australian exhibition at Newport for the Midsumma Festival. A planned Australian tour by P-Orridge has been cancelled due to “unexpected complications” related to an ongoing struggle with chronic leukemia. A pioneer of industrial music, P-Orridge was a founding member of bands such as Throbbing Gristle and Psychic TV. The exhibition, Loyalty does not end with death, traces the development of the Pandrogeny Project, which involved
P-Orridge and late spouse Jacqueline Breyer undergoing cosmetic surgeries and seeking to merge themselves into one being. Curator Lawrence English said he was sad P-Orridge was unable to come to Australia. “The work Genesis has undertaken, across music and art … is a critical intergenerational connection between the countercultures of the mid-20th century and emergent projects around identity, transgression and transcendence in music and art today,” he said. Loyalty does not end with death will open at The Substation on Thursday, February 1.

Kudos for council over Flemings Pool action Altona locals have welcomed the restoration of popular swimming spot Flemings Pool after a community outcry. Hobsons Bay council has dumped 100 cubic metres of quarried sand over an area of about 1600 square metres at the site, where Millers Road meets Altona Beach. That’s enough sand to fill four 20-foot shipping containers. The pool is named after the Fleming family that, in 1915, removed rocks to create a swimming hole. Last year, after undertaking drainage works at the site, the council placed rocks over the site and left it without sand, much to the anger of locals. Cheryl Gardner, a granddaughter of one of the pool’s creators, Lawrence Fleming, was concerned enough to contact the council. In December, former lifesaver Melissa Wiseby was injured on the rocks and emergency talks to improve beach safety were held between councillors, traders and residents. Local ward councillors Tony Briffa and Sandra Wilson said the council had responded to community concerns with sand replenishment and would closely monitor and maintain the site. “Flemings Pool is a priceless gem in our local area and has been much loved by local residents for generations,” Cr Briffa said. Historian Peter Weaver, who grew up 100 metres from Flemings Pool, praised the council for listening to residents. “The sand’s all settled down and you can walk on the beach,” he said. “For a few months there, you couldn’t walk on the beach because of all the small stones and everything else.
Peter Weaver at Flemings Pool at Altona Beach. (Marco De Luca)
For a lot of locals, it’s their little swimming hole. Everyone’s passionate about it and the way it was left after council works just wasn’t acceptable. “But full marks to the council – they listened. When they realised there was a problem, they got on to it.”

Cemetery mess distressing By Benjamin Millar Rubbish, overgrown weeds, fallen branches and smashed graves are just part of the unsightly mess blighting Footscray Cemetery, according to the son of a man buried there. Eddie Vhrovic said he had become fed up with the state of the cemetery, with little seeming to have been done since he raised his concerns with its management. “The cemetery is really littered – there is rubbish and fallen branches over many of the paths,” he said. “I went there yesterday and there is builder’s rubbish there and it looks like they’ve just smashed up an old grave a couple of metres away from where my father is.”

Mr Vhrovic said a large piece of plyboard had been resting against his father’s grave since before Christmas. He said the situation has become so bad he had been forced to take the matter into his own hands. “I am a retired landscape gardener so I took all my tools down to clean up,” he said. “It’s been going on for years and years – it’s unbelievable.” Footscray Cemetery, on Princes Highway in Yarraville, is a year shy of being 150 years old, with the first burial taking place there in 1869. The Greater Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust (GMCT) took over management and day-to-day running of the cemetery from Maribyrnong council last May. GMCT communications acting manager Leigh Funston said regular maintenance was

contributed to very strong plant growth in our gardens and surrounds.” Mr Funston said feedback on the cemetery could be lodged on 1300 022 298 or sent to enquiries@gmct.com.au.

Leakes Road work cops a fine By Charlene Macaulay A contractor has been fined for carrying out unapproved road works in Laverton North after complaints from the public. Leakes Road, near Interchange Drive, was reduced to a single lane in each direction during the work. VicRoads said it received a number of calls complaining about the road works, but was not in a position to act, with the road falling under the jurisdiction of Wyndham council. Wyndham council city economy and liveability director Kate Roffey said the council

had been made aware of the work last week. “Council was made aware of works taking place without our approval near Leakes Road and Interchange Drive in Laverton North earlier this week,” she said. “Upon visiting the site, council officers stopped the works and issued the contractor with an infringement. The contractor has since been able to meet the
requirements of council and the works will proceed.” The council would not disclose how much the contractor was fined. Leakes Road is one of eight “high-priority” roads involved in duplication and widening in a $1.8 billion state government roads package. It will be duplicated between Fitzgerald and Derrimut roads to provide two lanes each way. Sections of Dunnings, Palmers, Derrimut, Dohertys, Forsyth and Duncans roads are also in line for duplication and widening as part of the package.

Author’s new chapter Altona North’s Rick Kiembe Mwamba, a refugee from Democratic Republic of Congo, has written his first book – about what brings happiness. After fleeing his homeland, Mwamba spent six years as a refugee in neighbouring Republic of Congo before coming to Australia in 2007. “My dad was a politician and was working for a political party that was against the dictatorial regime of the president, so that led him to troubles … he had to flee for the family’s safety,” he said. The former community worker with Darebin Ethnic Communities Council said he was pursuing his passion for writing short stories and poetry. He has just finished writing his first book, titled Bilengi, under the name Prince Rick Boss. “It means whatever gives you happiness or joy in my mother language, Lingala,” Mwamba
said. “It’s about a girl making a person the happiest, so it’s a romantic short story. “Most African people, including myself, one of the reasons that we came to other countries is to make a good happy life.” The 26-year-old, who was named Hobsons Bay’s Young Citizen of the Year in 2010, received mentoring from award-winning author Arnold Zable, whose own work is underpinned by refugee and asylum seeker experiences. The book is available online and Mwamba is developing an app to market it. For more details, visit princerickboss.com. Goya Dmytryshchak

Second go at first sight By Goya Dmytryshchak Married at First Sight favourite John Robertson is back for another shot at love in the 2018 series of the show. The 55-year-old from Altona Meadows was badly mismatched in season four after being wed to Debbie from Queensland who was upset he wasn’t Polynesian. Mr Robertson, a retail business owner with two adult daughters, was born and bred in Altona, and played football with local club The Vikings for about 20 years. He said after the last series ended, Channel Nine called to see if he was still single. “I was single at the time and the producers rang me up and they asked me what’s my status. I told them and they said, ‘Look, do you wanna come back?’ Mr Robertson said. Mr Robertson became one of the show’s favourites last season because of his down-to-earth manner. He said while he had learnt a lot from being on the show, it was hard to handle emotions. “It feels like when you’re in that experiment your emotions are amplified and I don’t think you can control that,” Mr Robertson said. “Even though you know what’s coming, you have a little inside information about the show, your emotions are still as real when it comes to love and all that sort of stuff.” He said this year’s show was full of controversy and characters. “Honestly, I think last year’s hasn’t got a patch on this series. “And I spruik Altona on there a bit, I’m telling you. I always say how wonderful Altona is – nobody believes me.” The show premieres on Monday, January 29 and Mr Robertson’s wedding airs on Sunday, February 4.
Homeless help urgent A new report has called for a youth refuge to be funded in the western suburbs “as a matter of urgency” to help young homeless who are “falling through the gaps”. The WEstJustice report – which included input from councils, police, schools, government departments and support services – said family violence and conflict, migration challenges, poverty, unemployment and inadequate social security provisions often led to young people couch surfing (staying in temporary situations for a short time before moving on). The report’s researchers spoke to 62 youths, including single mothers and refugees, who came into contact with the WEstJustice Couch Surfing Clinic, which provides support to couch surfers under 25 in the west. Those interviewed for the report were aged 14 to 24, with some finding their “couch provider” at train stations, shopping centres and on the street. The report stated that sexual abuse of couch surfers was common. The report called on the state government to fund a youth refuge in Wyndham to assist young people in crisis with supported housing or independent living and for the number of homelessness workers in the west to be increased. The state government was contacted for comment.
John Robertson is back on Married at First Sight.

MY PLACE Singer-songwriter Rebecca Barnard’s musical career has taken her far and wide, yet she always enjoys returning to her beloved Yarraville. She speaks with Benjamin Millar. What is your connection with Yarraville? We bought a house here in 1992. Friends had moved here and we fell in love with Yarraville. Thank God we bought when we did! What do you love most about the area? I love the community. My son was born and bred here. He went to Kingsville Primary School. We started to build a village, so to speak. I’d love to see fewer cars and trucks on our streets. Anderson Street is a nightmare! It’s great that Yarraville is so popular, but we really need to address parking, as well as keeping franchised retail to a minimum.
At the moment I’m obsessed with Pizza d’Asporto’s tomato and buffalo mozzarella salad. They use nice olive oil, too. All their food is delicious. I love Plump, Cornershop, Barkley Johnson, Terroni and Bopha Devi. What have been your musical career highlights? I’ve had so many highlights. The Rebecca’s Empire era in the ’90s was such a great time. Knowing people were going to be at your gigs, touring, writing and recording. I recorded my second solo album, Everlasting, in New York in 2009, which was an incredible growth period for me. I’ve performed with everyone you can imagine. More often than not they are artists I listened to as a young girl … surreal moments!

Price: $720,000 - $780,000 Auction: February 3 at 11am
This modernised 1950s-era build is a well-presented house nestled in a quiet pocket of thriving Seddon. Beginning with a contemporary electric sliding gate opening to off-street parking for two cars and a welcoming front porch, the overall mood is classic, contemporary and cosy. The whole property is as neat as a pin. The porch has a timber deck and ceiling detail that continues under the gabling to the side of the house.
Through the front door, a cute alcove is perfect for a bench and coat hooks – or it could become a study nook. The en suite and main bathroom have floor-to-ceiling stone tiling, porcelain hardware and quality tapware.
The second bedroom is also carpeted and has a built-in robe. In the main living area, hardwood flooring has been used to great affect, creating a sense of space. A split-system keeps things cool and there’s room for a small dining table opposite the generous kitchen. Here, white cabinetry, stainless-steel appliances and stone benchtops create a classic look. Building your own home, what to do before the first sod is turned Building a home will likely be the single biggest investment you ever make. To protect yourself from rogue building or plumbing practitioners, here are a few important steps the Victorian Building Authority (VBA) recommends you take before and during construction.
Top seven warning signs of an unregistered builder: • Your builder is not a member of an industry body. • They do not ask you to enter into a contract before the project starts. • They ask for too much money up front or at each set payment stage. By law in

Before your project starts: • Confirm your building practitioners are registered and that plumbing work is carried out by, or under the supervision of, a licensed plumber. Ask to see their VBA ID card – which all practitioners should carry. • Ask to see physical examples of their work and to speak with previous clients. • It is essential to select a building surveyor who is independent of your builder. • Appoint either your council’s building surveyor or a private building surveyor of your choice. If you ask for quotes from multiple private building surveyors, ensure they know this so they don’t wrongly assume you have engaged them. • Read the information on the Consumer Affairs Victoria website before signing a contract to ensure it meets legal requirements. • Ensure your builder gives you a domestic building insurance policy or a certificate of currency covering your property before construction starts. The builder’s name on the contract should match the name on the insurance policy.
Victoria, a deposit can be no more than 5 per cent of the total project cost (projects over $20,000). • They aren’t prepared to show you what homes they have recently built or to provide

FOOD REVIEW
CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir gets his Greek on at Eleni’s There’s a lot of family history tied up in Yarraville’s new Greek eatery. Locals who know just how long the fit-out of the former Anderson Street boutique took will be gratified to know that a fine space has been carved out here. The place is being managed by Eleftheria (“Thierry”) Amanatidis. At her side around the place is her uncle, Tony. The restaurant is named after Tony’s mother, Eleni Amanatidis. Eleni’s husband is Dimitrios Amanatidis, the father of whom was Antonios Amanatidis, one of the first Greek Orthodox priests to arrive in Australia. So, yes, a lot of family vibes and inner-west Greek traditions going on here. Unsurprisingly, and very happily from our perspective, the food being delivered is old-school, straight-up Greek tucker. We wouldn’t have it any other way. Still, we find some nice ‘n’ lovely twists and tweaks when we partake of a fine dinner as guests of Thierry and her crew. In the serve of super fresh dips ($14), for instance, the melitzanosalata eggplant number tastes not in the least of the garlic and smokiness we are expecting, but instead of zingy mint. Just as good is the tirokafteri of feta, capsicum and the tiniest tingle of chilli. These two are finely abetted by a tzatziki with dill and a very mild-flavoured tarama. The dips are served with very good house-made bread, though we resort to grilled pita to mop up the remainders.

ELENI’S KITCHEN + BAR Address: 28 Anderson Street, Yarraville Phone: 9943 4233 Bennie and I split two mains between the more ritzy grill line-up and the “Eleni’s home favourites” list that includes moussaka and pastitisio. The cabbage rolls ($24) are every bit the home-style classics for which we’ve been hoping. The meat in our lamb gyros plate ($25) is very fine indeed – salty and herby and heaps of it. This meat is also available in pita-wrapped takeaway form for $12. In some ways, though, the top test of both our mains – and a handy gauge of the freshness and general excellence of the food at Eleni’s – comes in the form of the salads. Differing slightly, they are superb – dressed well, juicy and delicious in every way, and displaying no sign at all of even a single tired or brown-edged leaf. The baklava ($8.50) – made by Thierry herself – is a tender take on another Greek classic. Even better is the rizogalo (rice pudding, $8.50). This is some kind of fancy trick – that something so homespun and plain can simultaneously be so suave, smooth and sexy. There’s no doubt in our minds that Eleni’s will be widely regarded as a very welcome arrival to the inner west. (Consider The Sauce dined at Eleni’s as guests of management.)

27 MARIBYRNONG & HOBSONS BAY STAR WEEKLY \ JANUARY 24, 2018
SPORT Bulldogs’ future in their own hands Two thirds of the way into the season, Yarraville-Footscray is still none the wiser about its destination in the Bowls Victoria premier division. The Bulldogs have all three outcomes on offer: they can reach the finals, finish in mid-table or even be relegated. The eighth-placed Dogs are just nine points out of the top four, but they are also only 14 points above the relegation zone. That is why Yarraville-Footscray’s tense 81-75 win over second-last MCC at Francis Street on Saturday was so important. It afforded the Bulldogs some breathing space from the relegation places. The Bulldogs claimed three of the four rinks to pick up 16 of a possible 18 points. It was an arm wrestle in all rinks with Bulldogs skips Wayne Roberts (24-18), Chris Ball (20-16) and James Pearce (17-16) leaving it late to wrap up rink wins. The only Bulldogs rink on the losing side was
Ray Coulter, who went down 25-20 to MCC’s Michael Wilson. Yarraville-Footscray will travel to powerhouse Melbourne looking to cause an upset on Saturday. Meanwhile, Altona remains in the driver’s seat at the top of the ladder – and comfortably so. The A’s opened up a 22-point lead in first place with a commanding 84-71 win over Essendon at Civic Parade on Saturday. Dane McKinnon’s rink had a day out for Altona, winning 28-12. There were also wins for A’s skips Brad Peck (23-14) and Brett Foley (22-17). Nathan Wilson was the only A’s skip to drop points, going down heavily 28-11 to Essendon’s Jay Bye-Norris. Altona will be out to keep the good times rolling when it travels to newly promoted Deer Park on Saturday.
IN THE DOGHOUSE It’s summer sport, which means it is played in the heat ... deal with it. Thank goodness we have moved on from that, or have we? Every year at the tennis, football club pre-season training and the cricket we see images of elite athletes struggling with temperatures more suited to frying eggs. Last week the 40-plus days had one tennis player claiming he was dying on court. Local sport errs on the conservative side in this area and rightly so, especially for juniors. Calls for heat policies to be reviewed and dropped back a few degrees make sense to me. Sport is supposed to be fun.

The amount of people required to get a team on the park is getting out of hand at local level. Football is the worst offender but other sports are quickly catching up, especially for coaching. The days of the captain-coach are gone and even a playing coach is a rare beast these days. We are used to seeing former AFL players having a kick or coaching in the suburban competitions but are we seeing the next step? Former senior AFL coaches have rarely come back to grassroots football, but this year Rodney Eade will be coaching Balwyn in the EFL while Guy McKenna is at the helm at Beaumaris in the ammos. Football clubs tend to follow each other in most aspects so I expect this to be a new trend in the next few years.

Travis Dean keeps his eye on the ball for Footscray on Saturday. (Damjan Janevski)
The Williamstown Superules team has had its fair share of superstars during its history including Tony Liberatore, Saade Ghazi and Tony Pastore, to name a few. The club will be fielding five sides in 2018 from over 35s to infinity. Training starts February 1 and every Thursday from then on with the season starting on April 8. The club has a big year planned to celebrate the 25th anniversary of its first premiership in 1993. Contact details are available on the website www.williamstownsuperules.com.au

By Lance Jenkinson Footscray star Travis Dean made a pitch described as “a bit tacky and two-paced” appear like a road en route to a match-winning century. Dean compiled 111 runs off 138 balls to lead the Bulldogs to a 55-run win over Greenvale Kangaroos in a Premier Cricket one-day game at Merv Hughes Oval on Saturday. “He looked like he batted on another wicket to the rest of us,” Bulldogs captain Dylan Kight said. “That’s what we’ve sort of come to expect from him now.” Dean consistently hit runs without a high volume of boundaries. He only hit seven fours and one six, but he meticulously picked the gaps and made it a tough task for opposition captain Kyle Adams to set fields to him. Dean’s knock was the cornerstone to Footscray’s 5-248 off 50 overs.
“We lost an early wicket before he went in, so he knew that he had to bat the innings and he did that,” Kight said. “The good thing about his game is that he’s got about three or four tiers, where, if we’re being honest, most Premier cricketers have got the one or two. “He can shift up gears when he needs to and shift back down.” Kight provided the most support for Dean. With Footscray struggling on 3-46, the pair produced a 120-run fourth wicket partnership with Kight adding 61 off 80 balls. Kight has been one of the Bulldogs’ most consistent batsmen this summer with 539 runs at an average of 67.4. “It’s been a good season personally,” he said. “Our batting order is pretty strong and it’s pretty deep, so coming in at five there hasn’t been the pressure there has been of previous years. “The top order has been looking after me a lot, so that’s allowed me to be more consistent.”
28 MARIBYRNONG & HOBSONS BAY STAR WEEKLY \ JANUARY 24, 2018
Even with the Dean and Kight partnership, Footscray needed a little bit extra to hold the upper hand at the midway point in the game. Enter Hamish Winter-Irving, who showed his power with 37 off 21, including three sixes in the last over. “It’s not really a surprise to the playing group that he did that, but it probably was to Greenvale,” Kight said. Greenvale fell well short of the target, finishing on 9-193 off its 50 overs. Zaheer Hussain did his utmost with a free-wheeling 74 off 92, but when he was dismissed, his side’s chances dwindled. Hayden Butterworth claimed Hussain, finishing with 2-32. Footscray is fifth on the ladder, but level on points with third-placed Carlton. The Bulldogs will have a prime opportunity to break into the top four when they travel to bottom-of-the-ladder Casey-South Melbourne for a two-day game starting on Saturday.

more than a decade I have enjoyed presenting sport on 1116 SEN in various timeslots, but mostly weekends from when the footy finishes to when it starts again. However, my time at SEN is over as the station goes through an ownership and programming change. That’s the nature of the beast and after 45 years in radio I accept that and move on. This column remains dedicated to local sport so let me know any news.

SPORT
Yarraville declares itself up for the chase at home Yarraville will not shy away from the challenge of a huge run chase. The Eagles will have to reach nearly 300 to trump Plenty Valley’s 8-296 in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association at the Yarraville Oval this Saturday, but they are up for the fight. “We’ve got to take confidence out of our run chase in the Preston game,” Eagles captain-coach Matthew Love said. “We were chasing over 300 and before the rain hit, we were 1-200 and going along well. “We’ve got to back our ability and get a couple of big partnerships going. “It’s pretty hard to stop the run flow at Yarraville at the moment, so we’ve got to bat all day and bat strong.” Plenty Valley recovered from a precarious position to post its imposing total. The Bats were staring down the barrel at 5-96 before Daniel Heatley turned up the heat with 110 and Sean Ayres added 70.
While Love assessed the pitch as a 300-run par score, he knows his side could have been in a better position at stumps. “To be honest, it was probably a 300-run pitch and outfield, so at tea we were really happy,” he said. “We just didn’t bowl to a plan and gave them enough loose balls for them to play. “We let ourselves down a bit in the field and had a couple of dropped catches. “It just got away from us.” What Love was most disappointed about was Yarraville letting down opening bowlers Alex Hewet and Cameron Rycroft. Hewet and Rycroft churned out 40 overs between them to have the Eagles in a strong position only for it all to go pear-shaped late in the day. Hewet bowled a marathon 24 overs for a return of 2-59, while Rycroft managed 16 overs for a team best 3-41. “It was one of the better opening spells of bowling partnership-wise for a long time,”
Opening bowler Cameron Rycroft sends another one down for Yarraville. (Damjan Janevski)
Love said. “It could’ve been a lot uglier if they weren’t able to bowl well at the top. “Their opening spells were fantastic and made it hard for them to score early. “They were pretty cooked after their spells.”
Sitting in seventh, Yarraville will be desperate to achieve a successful run chase to re-connect with the top six. Meanwhile, Altona holds all the aces in its clash with Preston after amassing 9-336 on day one at JK Grant Reserve. In-form Englishman Charlie Best blasted 134 off 187 balls, including 16 fours, and middle order batsman Shane Jones went close to a run a ball for 113 off 117. The pair combined for a 185-run fourth wicket partnership and put their team in a commanding position. Williamstown secured first innings points over St Bernard’s on a day when 18 wickets tumbled at Murphy Oval. St Bernard’s were bowled out for just 100 with Seagulls change bowlers Patrick O’Malley (5-33) and Craig Sheedy (4-20) doing most of the damage. The Seagulls were 8-134 at stumps, thanks largely to 49 from O’Malley, for a lead of 34. Lance Jenkinson
Tullamarine trips up Spotswood
French import Jonathan Mottay is dominating on the mound for Williamstown Wolves. (Shawn Smits)
Mottay’s sweet revenge By Lance Jenkinson French import Jonathan Mottay is playing with a chip on his shoulder to the benefit of the Williamstown Wolves in the Baseball Victoria summer league division 2. Mottay, the Wolves’ dominant starting pitcher, was implored by his girlfriend, Betty, to take his baseball talents overseas. Knowing how much he loves the sport and how good he is at playing it, Betty wanted Mottay to challenge himself in competitions around the world and the couple could use it as an avenue to travel and break up the monotony of a nine-to-five job and weekly bills. Mottay was drawn to Australia, a nation that is developing in baseball, much like his own country, so it seemed a good fit. What Mottay did not expect was to find Australian clubs pushing back on the idea of him joining their club, not because of his skills, but because he was travelling with Betty. For Mottay, it was non-negotiable that he came as a package deal with Betty. “I found that so many clubs in Australia from Perth to Brisbane and even out here [in
Melbourne], they were like, ‘you shouldn’t come with your girlfriend because she’ll be a distraction’,” Mottay said. “That was except for Williamstown, who said, ‘oh, you’re coming with your girlfriend, what can we do for her?’ ’’ Mottay’s arrival at Williamstown has been a win-win for club and player. Mottay is relishing the chance to check out Melbourne and its surrounds, while the Wolves have found a star pitcher who has the potential to lead them to promotion. “We’ve settled in perfectly since the first day,” Mottay said. “I met with [coach] Jarryd [Rogers] in Paris and I knew [president] Daniel [Chircop] through chat from May all the way to October when I got here. “They’ve been more than welcoming and as far as going out to eat, going out for drinks, going out to the beach and showing me and my girlfriend around town. “They’re taking both of us into consideration, which makes it easier.” More importantly, Mottay is delivering on the field, perhaps making some of the other
clubs regret their decision not to take the package deal. Mottay recently sported a 1.40 ERA to go with nine wins. The 23-year-old from Paris has even come face to face with clubs who opted not to take him on. “I have that chip on my shoulder when we face these other clubs, like, ‘hey, this is what you’re missing out on’,” Mottay said. “We get to winning a bit more and they have that bitter taste in their mouths.” Mottay was born in the US, living there until the age of 15. But he sees his future in France. He wants to be a permanent fixture in the French national team. “It’s a country developing baseball, whereas America is baseball, so I’m not looking to be another American out here, I’m looking to be the Frenchman out here,” he said. Mottay likes Williamstown’s prospects of promotion this summer. “We’ve got that goal to make it up to division 1 next year and we’d like to make it as easy as we can and finish on top of the ladder,” Mottay said. “I like our chances as far as pitching and hitting goes.”
Spotswood hit a snag on Saturday with an unexpected 21-run loss to the previously winless Tullamarine in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association senior division at McLean Reserve. The Woodsmen seemed to be coasting to victory when they restricted the Demons to a gettable 9-127 off their maximum 40 overs. Allan Wise was the main weapon for the Woodsmen attack with an economical 3-12 off eight overs, while Upal Singankutti-Achchige claimed 3-30 off eight. But Spotswood’s run chase turned out to be a fizzer. The Woodsmen were routed for just 106 in 37.4 miserable overs. The defeat leaves the Woodsmen outside the top four and in desperate need of a win against Doutta Stars in a two-day game back at McLean Reserve starting on Saturday. Seddon had a boilover nine-run win over top side Yarraville Club at the Walker Street Oval. The Dockers made a positive 9-184 off their 40 overs and then restricted the Clubbers to 8-175. In north west division, it was a clean sweep of losses for local sides Altona North, Druids and Laverton. Altona North tumbled to third on the ladder after a nine-run loss to PEGS at the PEGS Sports Fields. Murray Ring took 4-46 as North contained PEGS to 9-173. It proved to be too much for the North batsmen, who were all out for 164, despite the best efforts of Luke Rainone, who scored 63. Druids was uprooted from the top four after a disappointing 17-run loss on home soil to Craigieburn at Shorten Reserve. Druids could only muster 127 with Ben Coddington (42) and Sam Thurston (35) the shining lights. Indike Gallage, the Druids new ball operator, made it a difficult run chase for Craigieburn, taking 4-13 off 7.3 overs, but the visitors went on to make 144. Laverton lost a thriller to Sunshine United by eight runs at Selwyn Park. The Magpies posted 9-146 off 51 overs with Kaine Hallinan leading the way with 34. United eventually reached the target and finished on 6-154. Lance Jenkinson
