A contaminated waste facility 950 metres from Altona homes is expected to start operating as early as March. Enviropacific Services will operate the Solve plant on the Dow Chemical site in Kororoit Creek Road. The plant will take contaminated soil from all over Australia and have the capacity to treat “greater than 20 tonnes an hour”. Enviropacific purchased the business from Innova, which in 2013 successfully appealed to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal to overturn Hobsons Bay council’s refusal to grant a permit. At the time, about 3500 residents signed a petition against the proposal, saying it would make Hobsons Bay the “toxic waste and dust capital of Australia”. In approving the toxic soil plant, VCAT stated that residents 950 metres from the site were safe because the state government had set the safety buffer at 500 metres. “If properly managed, fugitive dust from soil storage on the Innova site is unlikely to be an issue beyond its site … and certainly not an issue 950 metres or more away,” VCAT’s ruling said at the time. Nothing has happened on the site until recently, with bulldozers currently on site clearing the land. Hobsons Bay Residents Association (HBRA) convenor Jason Price said there were concerns toxins could be released into the air. “HBRA is extremely frustrated that despite our campaign, significant community opposition and rejection
from the council, VCAT approved this dirty facility,” he said. “I have no doubt they wouldn’t build and operate this facility 950 metres from homes in Kew and Toorak. “Why should we be the dumping ground to clean and soak up dirty toxic soil from around the country?” Hobsons Bay deputy mayor Tony Briffa said it was disappointing that Altona was again being used to accommodate a site that “will adversely impact our environment and the potential health and amenity of our residents”. “I remain disappointed VCAT overturned the council’s rejection of this facility and will do my best to ensure it will be closely monitored to protect the community and our environment as much as possible,” Cr Briffa said. Enviropacific state manager Jared Roberts this week said the Solve plant was in a heavily industrialised area of Altona and would treat contaminated soil in a fully-enclosed building. “It will operate under strict state and local government guidelines using the latest high temperature clean-up technology with EPA-approved continuous emissions-monitoring systems in place,” he said. “Using internationally recognised thermal desorption technology, our facility essentially cooks the soil and destroys contaminants in the soil in a fully enclosed system. “The process breaks down contaminants into carbon dioxide and water. “Acidic gases that are formed are neutralised using a slightly alkaline solution to capture the gases in the form of common salt.”

AROUND THE BAY Hobsons Bay ward news
Cherry Lake Ward Altona/Seaholme Foreshore Council’s work on the Altona/Seaholme Foreshore is continuing with two drop-in sessions announced for the community to come along and see what is planned. Council is investing $2.3 million into the project this financial year to upgrade beach access points and protect our foreshore from the expected effects of climate change. The beach access points will offer new recreational features, such as viewing platforms and picnic areas. Some aspects of the design will be open for community feedback – so tell us what you think by 5pm on 31 January! Visit participate.hobsonsbay. vic.gov.au for more information and to lodge your feedback. Council’s two drop-in information sessions for the community to learn more about the project are on Saturday 10 and 24 February from 9.30am to 12.30pm at a venue to be confirmed. Updates will be posted on the Participate website.
Altona • Altona North • Brooklyn • Seaholme contractor was onsite to undertake sand renourishment works at Flemings Pool. Approximately 100m3 of quarried sand was spread over an area of about 1,600m2. The sand replacement will help protect the access ramp from ongoing damage and collapse, reduce wave impacts during high tides and storm events, reduce erosion, provide greater access and usable foreshore space and improve safety. Council will continue to monitor the sand and assess the coastal impacts on Flemings Pool.
PA Burns Reserve Last summer, Council conducted a survey to determine how our community uses PA Burns Reserve and the Altona Dog Beach. The survey generated more than 400 responses with feedback informing a proposed plan for the reserve. Our community can now have its say on the proposed plan, which includes: •

Compo pledge for tunnel houses By Benjamin Millar Hundreds of Yarraville residents living directly above the planned route of the West Gate Tunnel have been promised compensation for any damage caused by tunnel boring. The state government last week announced two giant tunnel boring machines were on their way to Melbourne to start construction on the $6.7 billion toll road project. Initial construction work will begin at the northern tunnel portal in Footscray in coming weeks, while year-long building and testing is
carried out on the $50 million boring machines, each weighing 4000 tonnes and measuring 15.6 metres tall and 90 metres long. Roads Minister Luke Donnellan said the condition of about 350 houses sitting above the tunnel’s proposed route would be assessed both before construction took place and after the project was complete. “If there is damage, we’ll repair it,” he said. “If there is compensation which needs to be paid, we’ll pay the compensation. “This is an obligation the state government has which it will meet.”
‘‘
If there is damage, we’ll repair it … this is an - Luke Donnellan obligation
’’
Boring will begin early next year and continue for nearly two years, completing about nine metres a day of the twin tunnels that will emerge at the southern portal at the West Gate Freeway. The four-kilometre outbound tunnel will take about 18 months and start before the 2.8-kilometre inbound tunnel.
Western Distributor Authority chief executive Peter Sammut said residents had already been informed about the tunnelling. “For most people this will not be noticeable to them,” he said. The tunnels will run at least 18 metres beneath the ground and be 27.2 metres below ground at their deepest point. More than 1.5 million cubic metres of rock and soil will need to be removed and trucked away. The project is due to be completed in 2022. – with The Age

Hobsons Bay ready for Australia Day Seventy Hobsons Bay residents will become Australian citizens during the Australia Day breakfast at Williamstown Town Hall officiated by former Victorian premier John Cain. Hobsons Bay mayor Angela Altair said the municipality was home to people from more than 130 countries, speaking more than 100 different languages. “Our community’s diversity is one of its greatest strengths, and we value our rich mix of people and cultures,” she said. The majority of the municipality’s newest Australian citizens hail from England,
Germany, India, Indonesia, Republic of Ireland, Israel, Myanmar, Northern Ireland, Poland, Scotland, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Thailand, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, United States and Zambia. Thousands are expected to flock to the Australia Day in Altona day-long event, which culminates with fireworks on the beach. Hosted by Altona Village Traders Association, the event is now in its 11th year. Celebrations, centred around Altona beach, Logan Reserve and Pier Street, start at 11am and end with the fireworks show about 9pm.
Highlights include a sand castle competition, horse-drawn carriages, double decker bus tours and camel rides on the beach. Traders’ president Kim Walsh said about 12,000 people attended last year’s event. “We’ll have live music, a lot of local artists on the main stage at Logan Reserve,” he said. Yarraville will host the fourth annual Stony Creek Music Festival on Australia Day from 2-7pm at McNish Reserve, with Nick Barker and Shane O’Mara headlining. Goya Dmytryshchak
Part of a children’s playground at Altona’s Logan Reserve has been destroyed in an apparent arson attack. A climbing frame was burned down about 4am on Wednesday. Firefighters were on scene within six minutes of receiving a call from the public. An MFB spokesman said the fire had been deemed suspicious. The damaged part of the playground remains fenced off but the rest is available for public use. Hobsons Bay ratepayers will foot the $20,000 bill to replace the damaged equipment. Hobsons Bay mayor Angela Altair said the council was working to replace the vandalised structure. “Altona is usually a peaceful and family-friendly community and we’re shocked that this popular play equipment has been so needlessly damaged,” she said. “We are saddened by this senseless act of vandalism and disappointed that ratepayers will ultimately foot the bill. “If anyone saw anything suspicious or knows anything about this act of vandalism we ask that they please report it to the local police.” Goya Dmytryshchak

Dive team patrols waters By Goya Dmytryshchak Seven accused abalone poachers have been netted in a sting using covert divers by the Victorian Fisheries Authority in Hobsons Bay. Undercover and uniformed officers conducted a one-day operation between Williamstown and Altona earlier this month. Senior fisheries officer Dane Robinson said the accused came from as far as Shepparton with the largest bag containing 135 abalone – 130 more than the five abalone allowed by law. “We utilised a fisheries officer compliance dive team where they will swim out and dive on potential offenders and catch them red-handed in possession of abalone, he said. “There is a black market in abalone in Victoria. Depending on where it’s sold, it can sometimes be up to $40-$50 per kilogram. Abalone are protected in Victoria and can only be collected during a 60-day open season, predominantly from November to April, and only on weekends and public holidays. “There’s a lot of regulations to do with that, so you’ve got to dive in water deeper than two metres and you must carry an abalone measuring device, Mr Robinson said. “You must measure the abalone before you remove them from the seabed. The recent sting netted four Shepparton men aged 33, 35, 36 and 42, a 44-year-old Pakenham woman and a 23-year-old Derrimut woman. Possessing a commercial quantity of abalone is punishable by up to 10 years in prison and hefty fines. Fisheries officers are also swooping on people taking shellfish and other invertebrates from the “intertidal protection zone, which is from the high-water mark to a depth of two metres. Report illegal fishing activity to 13 FISH (13 3474).

All ready for flick off Australia’s largest table football club, founded in Altona, will this weekend compete against some of the world’s top-ranked players in the fourth Asian Cup. Western Flickers Table Football Club (WFTFC), affectionately known as the Pelicans, is co-hosting the event. More than 60 players from Australia, Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong and Malaysia are competing in what is on course to be the biggest sports table football event ever held in Australia. WFTFC president, Altona’s Benny Ng, said table football or subbuteo was a tabletop replica of a real football match. “The game has been around since the 1940s,” he said.
Do you always manage to find time for everyone else?
“It was really huge in the ’80s and ’90s and then it kind of died down a bit because of video games and kids got interested in different things. “It started out as a toy but there is a lot of skill involved – in fact it’s a combination of chess and pool. “Most of our players are first and foremost soccer fans, people who love the sport of soccer and they want to be able to play at home.” Spectators are invited to attend the Asian Cup at South Melbourne’s Lakeside Futsal stadium from January 19 to 21. Up against a brick wall
VCAT puts brakes on case
By Goya Dmytryshchak A $3 million upgrade to Newport Lakes Primary School will leave neighbouring properties staring at a high wall just metres from their balconies, a Chalmers Lane resident is claiming. Rosemary Marsham said a “massive” wall, at least two storeys high, would be built just 2.4 metres from her first-level balcony. The state government was not required to obtain Hobsons Bay council’s approval or consult residents about the wall. Ms Marsham, who was notified of the construction work by the school on December 21, said she had bought her house because it overlooked beautiful trees in the school’s playground to the rear. She said that would change when a school building was developed on her fenceline. “We’ve got a balcony right across – our balconies are going to be facing a brick wall when they build this thing,” she said. “We don’t have a view out the front, so the view out the back was lovely. “We’re going to lose all our sun, we’re going to lose everything – it’s just terrible.” She said residents did not object to the school upgrade, but did not want a building on their fencelines. “At the moment, the trees overhang and we’ve had all these birds nesting this year – we’ve had 13 babies in four different nests,” Ms Marsham said. “Looking at the plan, it looks like they’re going to take the whole lot of the trees … it’s just devastating.” The government’s school buildings website states that construction has commenced on “four new general purpose and teaching and learning spaces, student toilets, a music and

A man who experienced a string of bad luck after buying a used car has lost his bid for a refund. Dylan Whitton applied to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal for $2400 damages or a refund on a 2008 Ford Mondeo he bought from Metro Motor Sales. Mr Whitton said that in 2017 after buying the Ford, defects arose and Metro told Mr Whitton to take the car to its mechanic. Metro gave Mr Whitton a loan car, which broke down. VCAT deputy president Ian Lulham said Metro replaced it with a Passat. “Mr Whitton almost struck a pedestrian whilst driving the Passat,” Mr Lulham said. “The drunken pedestrian climbed onto the bonnet of the Passat and jumped up and down damaging it.” Metro told Mr Whitton he would have to pay $900 for repairs. Mr Whitton eventually got his Ford back but it made “an unacceptable chugging noise on idle”. Metro agreed to service the car but told him repairs to the Passat were actually $1500. Mr Whitton was left alone with the Ford and drove it away without paying any money for repairs to the Passat. He took the car to a Ford dealer which made repairs totalling $1287. In his ruling, Mr Lulham said he took Metro’s damages as a set off against Mr Whitton’s damages and dismissed the proceeding. Goya Dmytryshchak

NEWS STARWEEKLY.COM.AU
Action flows on west waterways By Benjamin Millar Campaigners are stepping up their push for better protection of the Maribyrnong River and western suburbs waterways. Legal group Environmental Justice Australia is leading the call for stricter planning controls that mirror those brought in last year to protect the Yarra River from inappropriate development. The Rivers of the West campaign, bringing together environment, legal and local river groups, highlights the gap between efforts to
protect the Yarra and the Maribyrnong and Werribee Rivers. Environmental Justice Australia lawyer Bruce Lindsay, who helped fight for the Yarra’s better protection, said it was time to shift Melbourne’s rivers from being industrial drains to well-functioning waterways. He said development at the heavily contaminated Commonwealth Defence site in Maribyrnong could have potentially damaging consequences for the Maribyrnong River. The campaign is calling for an end to over-clearing of vegetation in catchments,
seeking restoration of wetlands along rivers and demanding tougher planning measures and improved management of stormwater run-off. Friends of the Maribyrnong Valley secretary Maelor Himbury said Maribyrnong, Brimbank and Moonee Valley councils had become more serious about the problem, but that the state government is lagging. Water Minister Lisa Neville said the government has passed laws to protect the Yarra and would “consider similar protections for other landmarks”.
Opposition environment spokesman Nick Wakeling offered support for action on the west’s waterways. “At a time of significant population growth, it is imperative to act to protect the Maribyrnong River,” he said. The campaign comes as Maribyrnong council continues to press the state government to spend $12.5 million to revitalise the Maribyrnong River to offset the impact of the proposed West Gate Tunnel. -with The Age

The Footscray Trugo Club is back. Almost a decade after being forced to shut up shop due to dwindling membership, the revitalised club will hold a social game day at its newly-renovated home on Buckley Street. The January 28 event will be the first social game day at the historic club site, following occasional events in 2017 at the Footscray Bowling Club. The site originally operated from 1937 to 2009. 13 MARIBYRNONG & HOBSONS BAY STAR WEEKLY \ JANUARY 17, 2018
PRESSED FOR TIME I think my hubby has developed an addiction – scouting the internet for kitchen gadgets. Several times, I’ve sprung him gleefully hunched over the Dreamfarm website, his latest purchases being the Supoon (a non-drip kitchen spoon he raves about) and the Garjet. Garlic presses can be fiddly at the best of times and really difficult to clean. The beauty of the Garjet is that it scrapes itself clean and then ejects the peel. It practically cleans itself, meaning the garlic ends up in your meal, instead of all over your fingers.
MELANIE McGRICE, LEADING MELBOURNE DIETICIAN AND NUTRITIONIST
Better still, it can crush several cloves of garlic at once and there’s no need to peel away the skin first.
FB: How would you rate your cooking skills? MM: Four out of five. I love food that tastes good and love to experiment, which means that sometimes I end up with fabulous creations and other days I end up with disasters!
Check out the Garjet and other time-saving gadgets including the Smood (potato masher), Clongs (click lock sit-up tongs) and the Chopula (a sit-up spatula that also chops) at dreamfarm.com. I hope everyone survived the festive season and all the festive food and beverages that go along with it. As we launch into another year, I hope your 2018 will be filled with great food and great times with friends and family. Cheers to you all.
FB: What is your signature dish? MM: That’s a hard one as I rarely make the same thing twice! But I do have a bit of a love for bolognese in the winter. It’s great for getting kids in the kitchen. FB: If you could only have one more meal, what would it be? MM: Al burro pasta and a green salad with a glass of rose from Café Di Stastio.
As always, if you have any recipes, tips or other info you’d like to share, email me at sarah@ howdypartnersmedia.com.au
FB: What is your favourite TV food show and who is your favourite TV food person? MM: I really don’t watch much TV so really can’t say that I’ve ever seen any TV food shows! I love foodie movies, though – The Hundred-Foot Journey with Helen Mirren is a classic! FB: What is your favourite food? MM: Cheese … goat’s fetta, blue, camembert – I love them all! FB: What is your favourite drink? MM: Bollinger. FB: Which five people would you most like to invite to dinner? MM: Elvis Presley, John Maxwell (leadership guru), King David (of Israel), Angelina Jolie and my nan (who died when I was in my teens). FB: Do you have a kitchen tip for us? As always, if you have any MM: Use your best crockery regularly – even a glass of water can feel decadent recipes, or other if it’s served intips a crystal champagne flute.

Putting aside my gentle ribbing about the “Scottish ancestry of Hopkins Street’s new dumpling purveyor, it turns out there is method in their method. MC Dumpling, you see, stands for My Chinese Dumpling. But more than that, this place does embrace a fast-food look and process. And that, as in this case, can be good. What it means here is bright, clean surrounds; brisk service with a smile; and freshly prepared and very affordable food. But it is the dumplings that are definitely the go here. The steamed pork and chive numbers, for instance, are fabulous at $9 for 16. Fresh-as, not too big, kinda dainty, juicy/ succulent – even if there was little by way of discernible chive vibe. Ditto with the lamb and leek dumplings – same number, same price, same good impression. We fare slightly less impressively with the sides. These chicken ribs normally cost $3, but are being presented to customers free with any order as an opening celebration. We don’t know how long that’ll be the case! They’re well fried and ungreasy – but tasteless. Or rather, taste not of chicken. Actually, ALL the sides cost $3 – including the corn fritters. They’re a variation on the more familiar

opportunity to partake in an elite tournament setting as they represent their state against some of the best basketball talent from around the country.” Under-16 player Monique Marcetic-Vaotangi and under-18 player Kayla Salmons are headed to the East Coast Challenge. Marcetic-Vaotangi was part of a triumphant
Vic Metro team at the Southern Cross Challenge last year. “Both of these young ladies were selected through a trial process of selection camps in 2017,” Shanklin said. Cassidy Gould and Kobe King-Hawea are heading to the under-20 Australian Junior Championships. Gould, who has landed a South East Australian Basketball League (SEABL) contract with Diamond Valley for 2018, is mulling over an opportunity to play division 1 basketball in the US college system. Gould, a Deeble award rising star nominee, has represented Victoria multiple times, as well as Australia. King-Hawea is a scholarship holder at the Centre of Excellence in Canberra, where she will also plays SEABL basketball against her former teammates. Shanklin predicts that King-Hawea will also be fielding a number of US college scholarship offers after this season. Lance Jenkinson
Wolves show no mercy
■ Matt
Tudor is well known in golf circles in Melbourne and especially Werribee where he won the club championship twice and the Werribee Open once before hitting the professional tour. Matt is a leading teaching professional and has recently opened the Golf Fitting Hub at Melbourne Airport Golf Club. He added another string to his bow this week, becoming the club pro at Melbourne Airport Golf Club taking over from Tim Moore. It is a big step for Matt as Tim was head pro for more than 30 years. Matt’s experience in the industry makes him the perfect man for both these roles. He can talk to scratch golfers or the weekend hacker. What would you expect from a Werribee boy? His father Des, a premiership coach at the Werribee Football Club, is a Werribee Park member and is a constant winner in the weekly competitions. Well done to Matt, I have no doubt he will be a success.
■ Local
athletes are getting excited with the annual Maribyrnong Gift coming up on January 26 at Pennell Reserve. This is the big event on the local running calendar and there might be more reason to celebrate as a few are coming into the event in red hot form. Nathan Burfitt, who is the Deer Park Football Club team manager, is tearing up the track and won the Rye Gift race last weekend on the back of his victory at Daylesford the week before. Megan McMahon is another getting used to podium finishes.
By Lance Jenkinson Williamstown Wolves have been denied a rare no-hitter in the last inning of a 20-1 mercy rule win over bottom-of-the-ladder Ballarat City Brewers in Baseball Victoria summer league division 2. The Wolves pitching staff was on song at Greenwich Reserve on Sunday until the Brewers found a seventh inning hit off relief pitcher Sean Talbot. Wolves player-coach Jarryd Rogers said even struggling teams could fire. “They always manage to get a hit here or there, so it was great for us to go through that many innings without giving up a base hit,” Rogers said. Wolves import Jonathan Mottay blew off the cobwebs from the mid-season break with four impressive innings. Daniel Chircop kept the Brewers scoreless in his two innings in middle relief before Talbot finished the game. While the Wolves were chasing a no-hitter, the most important thing for Rogers was to get innings into the arms of their pitchers. “We’ve got a fair number of pitchers who we needed to get through,” he said. “We’re glad to get through them today so we’re ready to face the top team [Berwick City] next weekend. “There was a bit of rust – there were times when we walked people unnecessarily and then pitched well to get out of the inning. “Towards the end of the game, we put ourselves in some bad situations, but then we pitched well to get out of it.” Offensively, the Wolves enjoyed a feast of runs. The highlights were towering home runs from Rogers, who had four hits, and Justin Gourlay. Gourlay’s power hitting in the four spot has been hugely important for the Wolves. “He’s been killing it this season,” Rogers said. “He’s our power guy – when he hits the ball, it’s usually a double or a home run. “It suits the team well because he bats in the line-up at four and bats behind the guys who get on base like me, Greeny [Aaron Green] and whoever bats two. When he does get a big hit, he scores a lot of runs.” Green has been superb in the lead-off spot. More often than not, the seasoned campaigner fights his way on to base for others to send him home. “I think he’s got the highest on-base percentage in our team,” Rogers said.

Road Reserve is the venue once again for the annual Hoppers Crossing Sports Club and E.J. Whitten Foundation Car Show on Sunday, April 8 from 7.30am-1pm. You can see some fine machinery in peak condition including muscle cars, antiques, and luxury cars and plenty more. The day features a live band, barbecue and special guests Ted Whitten jnr and Doug Hawkins. Proceeds from the day go to the E.J. Whitten Foundation for research into men’s health. ■ The
next few weeks will tell the real tale of who ends up where in local footy. St Albans has been dealt a big blow with Daniel Kerr, their high profile signing, now unable to don the Saints jumper due to a change in his employment. It is a pity and he would have been a valuable asset to the entire competition. Kevin Hillier
Any news, let me know on email kevin@howdypartnersmedia.com.au. Follow me on Twitter @KevinHillier, plus check out the Howdy Partners Media website as well. Justin Gourlay provided another power-packed game at bat for Williamstown Wolves. (Shawn Smits)
Now that Williamstown has secured its predictable win over the winless Ballarat City, it will be full steam ahead for a trip to take on ladder leader Berwick City. With the team that finishes on top gaining automatic promotion and the Wolves sitting in third place and within arm’s reach of City, this Sunday’s blockbuster at Cyril Molineaux Reserve has plenty riding on the outcome.
“It’s pretty tight at the moment between Berwick City, Preston and us, so this will be big,” Rogers said. “We had top spot and were undefeated for a while, but then we lost one game and lost top spot instantly, so it’s pretty competitive up there. “A win will go a long way to what we want to do and that’s finish on top.”
