A touch of Dickensian whimsy has West Footscray abuzz as Post Industrial Design brings its popular Christmas window back for another year. Artist Jos Van Hulsen’s sculptural installation, Bah humBUG, is a tongue-in-cheek play on Ebenezer Scrooge’s immortal damning of Christmas in the Charles Dickens classic A Christmas Carol. As well as a play on words, the bugs are intended as a reminder of the environmental impact of mass consumerism. The window will be lit until 10pm every night leading up to Christmas. Benjamin Millar

“We are upset Hobsons Bay City Council decided to rescind the motion. “Hobsons Bay overwhelmingly opposes this project. It would be nice to all be on the same boat. Opposing it strongly is what Brooklyn and Altona North want.” Rosa McKenna, from the Spotswood South Kingsville Residents Group, said residents were “shocked and disappointed” by the signing of contracts by the government and “disappointed but not surprised” by what she described as the council’s lack of foresight and courage. “This is not over and an alliance of community groups is forming to make this government accountable for its lack of judgment in maintaining an alliance with and subsidising non-taxpaying company Transurban over community interests,” she said.
12330698-HM46-16
Residents opposed to the West Gate Tunnel left this week’s Hobsons Bay council meeting chanting “shame” after councillors voted to reverse official opposition to the project. Cr Peter Hemphill, who moved the reversal motion, told a packed public gallery the council was not going to stop the project despite many misgivings about it, but would continue to advocate for the community. Cr Tony Briffa, who had successfully moved a motion to oppose the project at the previous meeting, was overseas. Greens councillor Jonathon Marsden was the only one to vote against rescinding the council’s opposition. “What does it mean to oppose the West Gate Tunnel project?” he asked the meeting. “Does it mean that we’ll stop taking the ministers’ calls? No. “That we’ll down tools throughout 2018? No, of course not. “That the CEO and the mayor will chain themselves to bulldozers? Probably not. “It means we stand with our affected communities.” The meeting heard the council had received commitments from the state government that included “significant funding” for sport and open spaces, and an undertaking to do a comprehensive traffic study and air quality monitoring. Cr Sandra Wilson sought to compose herself as she said it was “a very fraught and emotional time”. “I think it’s easy to say that we support or oppose an infrastructure project, but what does that mean? We have to be at the table,” she said. “All I can say is we’ve worked damn hard and will continue to do so.
“We’re not giving up. “No one ever wanted this road but state governments will make decisions.” After the meeting, Don’t Destroy Millers Road spokesman Chris Dunlevy said residents were disappointed by the council and state government. “The signing of the contracts was rushed and completely reckless,” he said. “The Andrews government has placed Victoria in a perilous position, and have done every single thing they lambasted the Napthine government about before the last election.

VU revamp aims at keeping students on track Students entering Victoria University from next month will be taking part in one of the biggest teaching shake-ups in the university’s history. VU will be the first university in Australia to adopt a new first-year model that throws out multiple semester-long courses in favour of classes taken as discrete four-week blocks. Students will complete each unit, including assessments, before moving to the next. George Iwama, vice-chancellor of Canada’s Quest University, told Star Weekly the model has been operating with great success at Quest
for a decade. Visiting Melbourne to share his insights with VU, he said the students at Quest are the happiest of any university he has taught at and retention rates were well above 90 per cent – a stark contrast to VU’s high attrition rate. “It is capable of allowing in-depth and intensive study of a subject,” he said. “If you keep the classes small, say 15 to 20 people, students can gain a bit of confidence.” Victoria University has attracted criticism for cutting staff levels and the number of courses offered in introducing the model, but has
‘‘
Mr Iwama said the model worked best when academic staff took a close interest in the students they were leading and ensured any problems they were having were identified early on, rather than running a whole semester without being addressed. He said VU’s decision to convert its entire first year was bold but had the potential to give nervous new students a more positive experience than throwing them in the deep end without adequate support.

defended its decision as necessary for meeting the changing needs of future students. It argues the model will mean less stress for students as they focus on one unit at a time before starting the next and that smaller classes will allow students to receive more one-on-one time.

Grave concerns raised
New beach for Altona a shore thing
By Goya Dmytryshchak A father who lost one of his twin daughters in a car crash last year says the “disgusting condition” of Williamstown Cemetery is compounding his grief. Peter Caruana said he had resorted to carrying a shovel, bucket and whipper snipper in his car to replace top soil and maintain his daughter’s grave himself. “My every visit seems to find mud on the roads in the cemetery and whenever a burial has taken place the mud, rocks etcetera are strewn across the grounds,” he said. “They’re doing construction work and they run their machinery over the gravesites, causing large indentations in the grass and soil. “I am continuously dropping in and topping up the soil myself. I find this very disrespectful. “I’ve actually got a bucket and shovel in my car to do it on the way home from work. “Every time my wife goes there, she sits there and shakes her head.” Mr Caruana, who also has loved ones buried at Altona, Keilor and Melton cemeteries, said other memorial parks were in much better condition than Williamstown. On numerous occasions, he has contacted The Greater Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust, which manages Williamstown Cemetery, to request better maintenance. “Getting close to Christmas time, how would they feel to visit their family and loved ones and pay respect and look at it like that?” Mr Caruana said. “They’ve got no respect at all.” The Trust’s acting chief executive Deb Ganderton said staff at Williamstown were proud of their achievements and performed admirably under sometimes trying and difficult circumstances. “Occasionally, in preparation for a funeral, especially after rain, mud in machinery tyres and tracks can be dislodged,” she said. “Our staff are diligent when cleaning up and regular street sweeping also addresses the problem. “Our machinery may leave some indentations on the grass but on completion of the activity staff are quick to rectify any issues.”
Altona beach will get 32,000 tons of sand under a $1.5 million foreshore renourishment plan announced last week. Hobsons Bay council has appointed Hoare Bros to undertake sand renourishment works along a 940-metre stretch of beach between Sarros and Maidstone streets. It is the first time since 2011 that the beach will receive more sand. Councillor Sandra Wilson said the renourishment was necessary because the narrow stretch was susceptible to erosion, inundation and recession. “We have seen significant amounts of sand lost and erosion and seawall damage,” she said. “Indeed, when we have storm surge as well, the water has come up over the seawall and damaged properties. “It’s an ongoing concern and it’s a multi-faceted approach to problems that we have around managing a very complex foreshore environment, one that is much valued.” Last week’s council meeting heard sand was also expected to be added to Flemings Pool, a swimming spot at the end of Millers Road, within the next fortnight. A joint letter tabled at the meeting stated that many residents were concerned about the state of the pool following drainage works and the placement of rocks to combat erosion. There will be two community consultations in February to discuss the foreshore renourishment work. Work will start in March and is expected to be completed by June 30. Goya Dmytryshchak

Game on for sports facilities By Goya Dmytryshchak Hobsons Bay council has released two draft reports aimed at addressing the municipality’s dire shortage of sports facilities. Mayor Angela Altair said the draft Sports Facilities Needs analysis and Tennis Needs Assessment would help guide future investment and improvements. “About 20,000 people participate in formal sporting activities in Hobsons Bay venues each week, with half of these participants coming
from our neighbouring cities in the west,” she said. “Our city’s top six sports, with forecasted future growth, are netball, basketball, AFL, tennis, soccer and cricket.” An online council survey completed by 68 of Hobsons Bay’s 110 sports clubs found nearly half felt they were exceeding capacity at their primary venues and 43 per cent expected an increase in female participation. A proposal to develop sports grounds at Bayside P-12 College in Newport has been identified as a priority. The state government
has offered the council $200,000 towards its development, estimated to cost $2 million. Cr Peter Hemphill said the two reports would help the council identify demand and where it needed to prioritise building facilities. “For tennis, the demand is in the Williamstown area and we’re already about 10-12 courts short now,” he said. “For football, it’s mostly in the Strand ward [Williamstown, Williamstown North, Newport, South Kingsville and Spotswood], but that’s because nearly all the clubs either
are located there or [it’s] where their base is or where they play.” He said there was a municipal-wide need for soccer facilities. “And while we have indicated that we need to extend the basketball/netball complex in Altona Meadows, we also need to begin building and planning for training and competition facilities in the rail corridor along Williamstown, Newport and Spotswood.” For details, visit participate.hobsonsbay.vic. gov.au
Every dad has his day A new project aimed at helping dads discover the joy of parenting is rolling out across the west. Recognising there are very few programs designed for fathers, Footscray early parenting centre Tweddle is trying to change that via the One Hundred Dads project. The not-for-profit organisation is seeking 100 businesses to each donate $1000 so 100 dads across Melbourne’s west can take part in the Working Out Dads Program. The Country Women’s Association of Footscray and The Seddon Bendigo Bank have both come on board as launch donors. Bank branch manager Ashley Coles, himself a new dad to daughter Penelope, said the bank was thrilled to get behind a community project with the potential to help so many families. “As a branch manager and a dad, I see a lot of families in the west making the transition to parenting, which we all know can be tough.” Tweddle chief executive Jacquie O’Brien
said projects such as One Hundred Dads are a tax-deductible way businesses and individuals can help create real change in their community. “Conclusive research confirms dads play a significant role in the social, cognitive, emotional and physical wellbeing of their children from infancy with lasting influences into their adult life, so donations also support the future of the west.” The first program for 10 dads will roll out at RecWest in West Footscray, with hopes of enough funding to support the program in Hobsons Bay, Brimbank, Melton, Moonee Valley and Wyndham as well. The Force Will Be Out in Strength Victoria Police will be conducting Operation Roadwise during the 2017 Christmas/New Year Holiday for 24 day from Friday 15 December 2017 to Sunday 7 January 2018 to reduce road trauma over this high risk period. Sergeant Marty Wallace from Westgate Highway Patrol said “During this Road Policing Operation, Victoria Police will implement a strategically co-ordinated and tactically focused approach targeting the key contributing factors to road trauma – Speed, Alcohol and Drug Impairment, Mobile Phones, Fatigue and Seatbelts/Restraint Non Compliance.” Police will be targeting drivers who attend the end of year work functions as it has been identified that there is a risk that some drivers will take risks whilst they are impaired by alcohol and drugs. Motorists will see numerous Police units on our major arterial roads during this holiday period and speed cameras will be set up in identified speed and high collision locations throughout the State. Those planning to travel during this period can expect to see an increase in vehicles travelling on our major Freeways and Highways. Drivers should plan their trips, be patient and ensure that they have frequent breaks when driving long distances.
within the speed limit and drive to suit the conditions. Speeding increases both the risk of a crash happening and the severity of injuries sustained when a crash does happen. Mr Giddings said the work of his group along with initiatives like the Operation Roadwise during the 2017 Christmas/New Year Holiday period would hopefully reduce the number of serious road crashes on our roads.
If you plan to have a drink, then plan not to drive. The risk of drinking and driving is just not worth endangering your life or those other road users. Before embarking on any driving trips drivers should check their tyres, windscreen washers, brakes and lights.

DRIVING IS NOT A GAME! SPEED KILLS!
Holiday driving has its challenges and drivers should drive in the hours they are normally awake, take regular breaks to reduce fatigue and allow extra space between vehicles. Drivers need to adapt to the conditions of the road, the onus is always on the driver to suit the conditions they are facing, and that includes the quality of the road.
Don’t make a Grave Mistake
Speed is the largest single factor in fatal road crashes on our roads. RoadSafe Westgate and your local council support reporting speeding drivers to Crime Stoppers.

Road trauma isn’t just about the people who die – it’s about the enormous impact on the community from family members, to the emergency service workers who have to deal with these tragedies on a daily basis and to the police who deliver devastating news to loved ones.

Nelson Place plan on hold

Dome adorned with Greek grandeur The biggest Greek Orthodox church in Melbourne’s west will unveil a new painting by a world-renowned iconographer at Christmas. Athens-based George Kordis has spent 10 days painting the dome inside The Dormition of Our Lady at Altona North. He has taught and painted iconography in Russia, Sweden, South America, the US and Ukraine.
Parish priest father George Frangos said Orthodox church domes were symbolic of heaven. “In all Orthodox churches throughout the world, you’ll always see the icon of Jesus Christ at the centre as the almighty ruler,” he said. “He’s always depicted in heaven and he’s surrounded by the prophets of the Old Testament that prophesise his coming.”
Kordis said iconography was a living art form and tradition that had evolved over centuries. “Although we have certain guidelines that must be adhered to, the utilisation of light and the architectural space allows us to create unique artwork for every place we visit,” he said. Goya Dmytryshchak
Hobsons Bay council has deferred making a decision on a proposed eight-storey, 62-dwelling development at Williamstown because of concerns about its proximity to Mobil’s fuel tanks. AVJennings’ proposed development at 3-39 Nelson Place forms part of the Port Phillip Woollen Mill site. To date, permits have been issued for 218 apartments and 74 townhouses on the mill site. The council received 53 objections to the latest proposal, including submissions from Mobil and Save Williamstown. Most concerns were about heritage, traffic, parking, strain on infrastructure and the site’s proximity to a major hazard facility (MHF), Mobil’s Point Gellibrand tank farm. A review of planning regulations for neighbourhoods near MHFs has been submitted to Planning Minister Richard Wynne, but appears not to have been signed off. The MHF advisory committee review makes a number of recommendations, including giving greater decision-making power to WorkSafe Victoria. Cr Jonathon Marsden, who was on a council special planning committee reviewing AVJennings’ latest plans on Thursday, said the council was awaiting Mr Wynne’s report. “The impending release of the minister’s report meant that it would have been foolhardy and rash to make a determination,” he said. PROPOSED STREET NAME FOR RIGHT OF WAY IN WILLIAMSTOWN Hobsons Bay City Council is proposing to name the Street, President Lane, which runs parallel with Power Street and Melbourne Road, between Douch Street and Courtis Street Williamstown, as shown on the plan below. The proposal is a result of an approved planning application at 96 Power Street, Williamstown. Two residential properties will require access via the Lane. In accordance with Schedule 10, Clause 5 of the Local Government Act 1989, Council is required to ensure that properties are easily identifiable by Emergency Services, statutory authorities, utilities and the general public. Accordingly, Council proposes to name the Right of Way, President Lane Williamstown. The name has been selected from Council’s list of approved street names and has regard for historical significance in that President was a prison hulk moored off Williamstown in 1853. Council is inviting feedback prior to finalising this proposed Street name. If you have any suggestions or comments please forward them to Hobsons Bay City Council, PO Box 21, Altona, 3018 within 30 days from the date of this notice. For further information, please contact Les Mitchell, Administrator Revenue, on 9932 1027 or email lmitchell@hobsonsbay.vic.gov.au

FOOD REVIEW
CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir gets his pub on at the Victoria Hotel Like several others in Melbourne’s inner west in recent years, the Victoria Hotel has undergone a rebirth. Often a lot of the interest and conjecture surrounding such enterprises is about whether the necessary makeover can be achieved while maintaining a down-to-earth pub feel. Our visit to the Victoria Hotel leaves us with a strong belief that those behind it have achieved just that – and with elan. There is much dark wood and a central, rectangular bar surrounded by high tables and stools, with regular tables at one end. The old dining room is still in play, and adjacent to that an outdoor area has been created by leaving much of the old look that was uncovered in the makeover just as is. The place still reeks of pubbiness. Likewise, the menu entices and excites us with what seems like a very savvy mix of pub tucker combined with deft tweaks. The price range is right in the pub zone, too. As you’d expect, the garlic bread ($8) here is not your usual sloppy, foil-wrapped loaf. Here, the good bread is sinfully dripping with butter, tarragon, parsley and chervil. Nat loves his black pudding and pork scotched egg with watercress and apple chutney ($14). I am afforded a sample taste, finding it to be tasty but preposterously rich. The spring vegetable and samphire fritters ($13) are a light delight, expertly fried and served with cucumber and mint yogurt. I have to look up samphire when I get home
VICTORIA HOTEL Address: 43 Victoria Street, Footscray Phone: 8320 0315 – according to Native Tastes of Australia, it’s a “native succulent also referred to as sea asparagus, swamp grass, salicorne, glasswort, pickleweed and sea beans”. Had we known our fritters would be so similar to the bhaji we regularly eat in Indian joints, we may not have ordered them. Still, very enjoyable. Bennie is very happy with his 250-gram $30 rump, cooked medium rare and served with fine salad, anchovy butter and triple-cooked fries. Nat and I both go for the pork schnitzel with kohlrabi remoulade, the same triple-cooked fries and grilled lemon ($25). It’s both surprising and beguiling to find our meals so determinedly monotone. A splash of colour would not go amiss! The key is in the eating, however – and in that regard, Nat and I enjoy our meals very much. The pork is quite thick – i.e. not hammered into wafer thinness – and juicy with wonderful flavour. The salad – effectively a slaw – adds just the right touches of contrasting textures and tastes. CHRISTMAS HITS AND MEMORIES When it comes to Christmas traditions, one thing I figured out pretty early in the piece is that my immediate family doesn’t ‘do’ fruitcake. And that includes me. For whatever reason, I’ve long baulked at the idea of sultanas, fruit peel and cherries in a cake. So in our house, it’s become something of a tradition for me to make a plain old chocolate cake for Christmas, because that’s what everyone asks for. Whether it be in the shape of a gingerbread house or circular and decorated with a holly design, the inside is always chocolate.

FB: How would you rate your cooking skills? LL: Not too bad. I much prefer cooking than doing the dishes, that’s for sure, LOL. So, from a young age I was always helping Mum doing the cooking. At home now, if I get home in time from work, I tend to take over the kitchen and help my wife cook for our two children. FB: What is your signature dish? LL: A quinoa, chicken and fresh vegetable salad. FB: If you could only have one more meal, what would it be? LL: Some fresh oysters, yabbies and salmon sashimi for entrée. A 300 gram eye fillet steak with vegies and a baked potato with sour cream for main course. Six Carlton Dry cans for dessert. FB: What is your favourite TV food show and who is your favourite TV food person? LL: It has to be Gordon Ramsay and his show Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares – no one drops an f-bomb like good old Gordon FB: What is your favourite food? LL: Seafood FB: What is your favourite drink? LL: Carlton Dry for beer and I love both water and soda water. FB: Which five people would you most like to invite to dinner? LL: My wife Lucinda, Steve Jobs, Michael Jordan, LeBron James and Bill Gates. I’d love to sit back and watch Jobs and Gates debate who has had the biggest impact on our planet re technology and society. Then I’d love to see James and Jordan go head-to-head arguing who is the greatest basketballer/sportsperson on the planet. It would be quite an interesting table to be at. FB: Do you have a kitchen tip for us? LL: Spend a bit of money on a great frypan as it will be your best friend. Also, buy a family Weber Q and cook outside in summer. Lastly, invest in a dishwasher. Let’s be honest, who really wants to be doing dishes? Happy cooking! ***Luke Livingston is the co-founder of the Love Me Love You Foundation, a non-profit organisation that strives to empower and build resilience in young adults so that they may overcome the stigma surrounding mental health and other life hardships.

My friends enjoy some less-ordinary Christmas food traditions: Jo eats pavlova for breakfast on Christmas morning; Karen’s grandmother served up trifle in the same crystal bowl every year; while Michelle’s Christmas food tradition is Boterkoek, a traditional Dutch slice: “My Oma always made it – a very rich and dense shortbread like butter cake. My family demolishes it in seconds,” she says. Lisa is the maker of “The ice cream maker comes out only at Christmas. The ice cream is always vanilla with different chocolate or lollies in it.”

Bought brand new and owned by the one young family, this easy-to-navigate townhouse in ever-evolving Maidstone is surrounded by new builds, Edwardians, townhouses and renovated houses. Wide and lined with gum trees, the street has a welcoming charm. The single garage to the left has internal access and a smaller-rear rolling door which creates a thoroughfare to the courtyard, great when entertaining on balmy summer nights.

It’s carpeted in a hard-wearing grey pile, has a built-in robe and receives good light from the large front window. A small closeted laundry saves on space. Dear Community of Maribyrnong
2017 was also a great year for Richmond fans, with the long overdue Premiership win showing that when you have a great team, anything is possible. For all you Richmond supporters out there we hope you enjoyed the win as much as we did.
As 2017 draws to a close, the hockingstuart Yarraville team and I would like to extend our very best wishes for a safe and happy festive season. As we move into the Christmas season, our office will be closed for a short break between December 23rd 2017 and January 3rd. 2018. We will be back to business as usual on January 4th.
Looking forward, 2018 is shaping up to be another excellent year for real estate. We already have 20 auctions scheduled in, with more to come. It goes without saying that at hockingstuart Yarraville we pride ourselves on our ability to sell your property, but don’t let that stop you from coming in and having a chat about anything to do with real estate. Even if you’re just after some simple advice, we’re more than happy to help.
It’s been a great year for sales in Melbourne’s inner western suburbs, with record prices being consistently recorded throughout the area. The Yarraville median house price rose from $926,000, to $1,044,000. This represents a whopping growth of 13% and is certainly enough to put a smile on your face if you are thinking of selling. Results like this go to show that things move fast in real estate. We hope you will stay in contact with us next year to ensure that you are informed and up to date with important news and industry trends.
On behalf of the whole team, I wish you and your loved ones a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Property prices in Melbourne’s Inner West are certainly impressive and show that we are clearly leading the charge in Melbourne’s property price growth. A real standout for us this year was the sale of 79 Ovens Street, which received over 10,000 views online and went on to sell for a record price of $1,800,000, a staggering $310,000 above the previous record for a single fronted property. This is a great example of the dedication we show in meeting the needs of our clients, and the passion we have in helping others when it comes to real estate. We plan to continue this as we move into 2018 and beyond. Outside of real estate, 2017 was also the year that my partner and I finally tied the knot, and I thank everyone who sent us their congratulations. Needless to say, this year has been fantastic in both a professional and personal sense, and I sincerely hope the year has brought you the same happiness it has brought me.

Fight power bills with some simple money-saving home improvements While rising energy costs are getting everyone down, it is possible to tackle extremes of cold or heat at low cost. Sustainability Victoria’s Business and Built Environment director Warren Overton says a little time and a few dollars spent making energy saving improvements can save up to $1000 a year. Homes built before 2005 with a 1.8-star energy rating, he says, are pushing hard against comfort. But Sustainability Victoria provides very helpful tips to remain comfortable and save some money. Here are four of the best: 1. Set your thermostat to between 18-20°. Every extra degree of heating adds 10 per cent to your heating bill. 2. Trap the air – close doors between areas that are being heated and cooled if you don’t have central heating. 3. Draught-proof your home. A lot of energy leaks out through gaps around windows, under doors and skirting boards, gaps/holes in exposed floor boards, vents and open manholes. Your local hardware shop can provide sealant, weather stripping and door snakes, which are inexpensive, easily used and help you to save up to $150 a year. 4. When buying new gas and electric appliances use the star rating system to find the most efficient models. The price difference between a three and five-star fridge, for example, is not necessarily great and can save nearly $200 a year. Some retailers’ websites let you search for appliances by their star-ratings, and the Smarter Choice Retail Program can help you get a better price for a range of products.

SPORT Falcons net a winning mixed bag It’s the first season the Falcons have fielded a mixed team, but they have been one of the dominant teams in the Victorian Netball League. Mixed goaler and Falcons under-19 VNL coach Josh Smith said all those involved were ecstatic to get the win. “We played the team who had won the last two years,” he said. “To beat them in the grand final is phenomenal. “We trailed for three minutes in the last quarter before our goal defence [Cam Martin] and wing defence [Anger Akec] took some crucial intercepts. It’s been really good to work with such a young group.” Goal attack Maddie Gray was named best on court. She shot 29 goals from 31 shots and went at 100 per cent in the final quarter. Smith said it was pleasing to see Gray, who
was one of the youngest on court, stand up in a big way. Both Gray and Akec are part of the Falcons’ under-19 team. Maggie Lind, who had been flying in and out all season from Adelaide, was a calming influence on the side, especially in the finals. Smith said the result was a true team effort, with everyone who got court time contributing. He said the Falcons would look at continuing the mixed team next year because it benefitted the VNL girls, and the male team members who are in Victorian men’s state teams. “It’s a different style of game and teaches the girls a lot of different skills,” Smith said. “The men’s game is played in the air and it’s good for the girls to have the experience of the ball coming in a different way.” Tara Murray

■ From the outside, the life of a professional sportsperson looks very glamorous, but the harsh reality is it is a job. Many refer to AFL football as “the grind”. For a group of young men, that began a few weeks ago when they were drafted. The Inside the Kennel show last week introduced a couple of the new boys to supporters. Ed Richards and Aaron Naughton are fresh-faced 18 year-olds, while Hayden Crozier comes from a few years at Fremantle. Ed and “Naughty” are on a steep, physically demanding learning curve, though Aaron is yet to join main training with groin issues. Combining the excitement of a new job with school results, getting a drivers’ licence and the normal teenage stuff makes for an interesting life for the boys. ■ New players into the system always talk about the step up in physical demands from under-age football, but for rookie Callum Porter it was more than a wake-up call. The young man from Officer was a few teeth lighter after a mishap in a boxing session. Bulldogs veteran Liam Picken accidentally dislodged some of Callum’s pearly whites when his glove slipped off the punching bag and connected with the rookie’s jaw. Hardly just another day at the office.
By Lance Jenkinson The pursuit of excellence is driven from within for Yarraville Club in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association senior division. The Clubbers are well placed going into the Christmas break to make it back-to-back premierships and collect a fourth flag in five seasons. Clubbers player-coach Justin Baker only seldom has to deliver a motivational speech because of the competitiveness that exists among the group to strive to get better and keep their place as the powerhouse team of the competition. “Our guys in the nets, they don’t go through the motions, there’s always a contest and that drive comes from each player,” Baker said. “They approach things professionally, they know what they do when they get in the nets and the bowlers are in the same frame of mind. “We’ve played together for so long, we all know each other’s weaknesses and strengths, it’s always good for training. “I suppose, me as a coach, it’s more or less poking and prodding them every now and then and saying maybe improve there or do that, but they’re all in charge of their own game at this stage of their careers, the majority of the players.” The key to Yarraville Club’s hot start so far has been its batting strength. Before last weekend’s play, after the Star Weekly deadline, the Clubbers had scored more than 300 more runs than any other side in the competition. It helps when you have Konrad Kurta (404) bludgeoning the ball to all parts with more than 400 runs in the bank and new skipper Andrew Cullen (293) is nearing 300 runs. Dig a little bit deeper and you will find some tidy numbers for Will Sheridan (193), Joey Blake (170) and John Blake (166). Kurta’s mindset and approach is a microcosm of the Clubbers organisation on the whole. Yes, Kurta’s run-making has been mesmerising, but he is not content with his lot at Christmas. “He is one of the better hitters of the ball, but he’s got one of the better defences I’ve seen,” Cullen said. “He’s at an age where he knows his own game, knows what he can and can’t do and I’ve always said the majority of cricket is played above the shoulders and he’s got that in check. “He’s rather chuffed to have this start, but he knows himself that doesn’t mean squat if he can’t continue that on through the season, so he’s working as hard as anyone in the nets to try and keep that form.” Even the bowling side of the operation stacks up for Yarraville Club on a division-wide basis. The Clubbers have conceded more than 200
IN THE DOGHOUSE
■ There are big changes at the Williamstown Football Club with president Fred Hall stepping down last week for family and business reasons. Vice-president Michael Howlett has been appointed president, while former player Clint Rippon joins the board. Grant Dooley has stepped down due to an overseas business posting. The requirements of VFL football are exactly the same as those for AFL, but with a fraction of the staff. Board members give their time and that is a difficult balance with business and family. Both Fred and Grant have been on the board for five years and will no doubt remain key Seagull members. Football clubs are a bit like Hotel California – you can check out, but you can never leave. ■ As the year comes to a close, I want to thank my long-time sponsor Westpoint Ford. Chris Byrne has been a friend for decades and a sponsor since day one. Thanks to those that send me news and information about local clubs and sport in the west – your contribution is a big help. Have a happy and safe Christmas and I look forward to seeing you In the Doghouse in 2018.

runs less than the next best bowling attack. But Baker says numbers can be deceiving and that his bowlers will need to lift in the new year. “The stats are probably flattering for a few of the blokes at the moment,” he said.
“They’d say themselves that they probably haven’t been up to scratch and there’s been some pretty soft outs by some opposition batsmen so far to be honest. “It’s only up for our bowlers, which is a positive sign for us.”

City West Falcons have pulled off an upset to claim the Victorian Mens and Mixed Netball League’s premier division mixed premiership. Having finished fourth after the regular season, the Falcons scraped into the grand final and went in as underdogs against reigning premiers Parkville Panthers, who were undefeated for the season. The grand final was a close affair with no more than six goals separating the teams all night. The Falcons got the jump early, but the Panthers hit back, levelling the scores at three-quarter time. The Panthers grabbed ascendancy early in the last quarter but couldn’t pull away and the Falcons again levelled the scores. Falcons grabbed the lead and kept it, eventually winning 49-46.

West’s star power shines through By Lance Jenkinson A special group of western suburbs athletes took to the stage to accept Don Deeble Sports Star monthly awards in 2017. There was a vast array of sports represented, be it indoors or outdoors, on the table, court or field. It showed that west is the best when it came to rising sporting talent. In February, we found the first of our 10 finalists, with para table tennis star Nathan Pellissier claiming the first monthly award. Pellissier is an inspirational athlete, not allowing cerebral palsy to hinder his progress in his chosen sport. A super determined person, Pellissier overcame a number of injury setbacks to bring down Rio Paralympian Barak Mizrachi and claim a national title. It is just one step in Pellissier’s quest to reach the 2020 Paralympics. Softballer Sam Reale was next cab off the rank in March. Incredibly, Reale was the only Victorian selected to represent the Aussie Steelers at the International Friendship Games, returning home with a gold medal. Also a talented baseballer, Reale has earned a sports scholarship for university in the US. April nominee Julia Bourke is another one of this Deeble class to earn a sports scholarship to

a US university in athletics for her excellence in the throwing events. Bourke did just about everything she could in her age group in Australia, thus wanting the challenge of overseas competition, where she will be tested to the maximum against talented throwers in the NCAA athletics system. It was a big year for soccer star Caitlin Greiser. She was a big part of South Melbourne’s all-conquering WNPL side. Our May winner represented Team Victoria and will be heading
to the US to take up a sports scholarship in Miami. The youngest of all monthly winners came in June in 14-year-old basketballer Paul Tsapatolis. The 205-centimetre starting centre of under-16 Vic Metro team is already fielding contract offers from Europe. The finalist with the steadiest hand has to go to shooter Thomas Armstrong. The July winner is one of Australia’s top shooting prospects. Teagan Newman is undoubtedly the top

lifter of this crop of finalists. The August winner rocketed up the state, national, Oceania and Commonwealth rankings in weightlifting this year. The most high profile finalist was our September winner Cameron Rayner. He was a deserving No. 1 pick in the AFL National Draft and is seen as crucial to the Brisbane Lions rebuild in the AFL. The penultimate monthly winner in October was taekwondo star Tayla Eckley. Eckley is used to the fanfare having claimed more than 50 gold medals in the sport but it was her ability to translate her success from the local stage to national and Oceania competitions that earned her a Deeble nomination. The November entrant was the most versatile of sports stars in Monique Conti. Conti was not satisfied with being a star in just one sport, so she has ambitious plans to conquer two. She has landed contracts with the Melbourne Boomers in the WNBL and Western Bulldogs in the AFLW. The 2017 Don Deeble Sports Star will be announced at the annual awards at Allegra Function Venue in St Albans on January 31. The winner will take home $5000 and the runners up will receive $2500, all donated by the Yarraville Club Cricket Club. Bendigo Bank Strathmore has also donated a $1000 encouragement award.
