Death in Braybrook By Benjamin Millar Homicide detectives are continuing to hunt for up to six men involved in the brutal death of a Braybrook man in an incident that has shaken the suburb and left the man’s brother fighting for his life. Castley Crescent residents were left in a state of shock by the vicious attack on brothers Paul and Sean Duncanson on Saturday night. Paul Duncanson, 40, died in hospital amid reports his throat was slashed with a machete. Sean, 44, underwent surgery for head injuries on Sunday and remains at The Alfred hospital in an induced coma. The pair had been rammed by a silver hatchback as they walked along the street before suffering a sustained beating with a machete and an iron bar. Neighbours say the beating “went on for some minutes”. Cheryl Duncanson, the mother of the brothers, has already lost a son to a car accident and a daughter who took her own life. “When Sean comes out of the coma all right, I have got to break the news that Paul died,” she said. She said her heart felt like it had been “ripped out of my chest” and she hoped her sons’ attackers “rot in hell”. Friends described Paul as having a “heart of gold” in social media tributes. The brothers are understood to have left their nearby Braybrook unit some time after 8.30pm on Saturday. Witness accounts of what happened during the attack vary. One Castley Crescent resident told the media he was home with his wife and 13-month-old daughter when he heard swearing and shouting coming from the street outside and called police. Another resident, Joy, 78, said she heard arguing and then a voice saying “help me, please help me”. “I didn’t want to come out, because I didn’t know if someone else was around,” she said. “I was too scared – I was honestly too scared.” Another resident said he came outside when he heard a “massive altercation”. “I only saw three attackers and one guy that was getting pulverised,” he said. Inspector Kelly Lawson called for the public to speak out if they saw or knew anything. “We are making an appeal for witnesses, if anyone did see something that may have occurred in Castley Crescent in Braybrook we would urge them to come forward,” she said. - with The Age

highest standard in community safety. Council will undertake works on the foreshore seawall with consolidating its many gaps (access points) and fragile spots that compromise its function and can result in localised flooding. After assessing the condition of 22 of these access points, we will close many of these gaps and provide new and improved access points – including seven accessible pedestrian ramps and two vehicle ramps. The Correa Street and Cresser Street pedestrian access point works are now complete. The next project is the McBain Street vehicle access point, which will be constructed in autumn 2018. It will include a raised platform with seating, a picnic table and potentially a shade structure. A vehicle ramp will allow for routine beach maintenance and emergency services access. Flemings Pool is a natural

The sand has been continually retreating in recent years, and through changing tidal patterns and storm events, has brought and exposed more pebbles and rocks to the area. We are currently assessing sand movement at Flemings Pool. The findings will be released to the public later this month.

The State Government’s Level Crossing community heroes Removal Authority is seeking community input into design options for the removal of the level crossing at Aviation Road, Laverton. Environmental, technical and community considerations all contribute to the design options, including traffic volumes, disruption to train services and road users, surrounding residential land use and impact to retail areas, impacts to utilities and services and environment conditions. Two community drop-in sessions have been held, but there is still time to have your say. The community, as well as people travelling through the area, can share their thoughts at your.levelcrossings.vic. gov.au/aviation. New hospital anchors jobs plan By Benjamin Millar A new Footscray Hospital could be built on Victoria University’s Footscray Park campus as part of an ambitious plan to bring 25,000 new jobs to Melbourne’s west. Footscray, Sunshine and Werribee would become major employment centres under the plan, launched last week by a new alliance chaired by former Victorian premier Steve Bracks. The West of Melbourne Economic Development Alliance (WoMEDA) is calling
on the state government to boost its investment in the rapidly growing region. Mr Bracks said the alliance’s strategy builds on existing business and industry strengths while tapping into growing industries such as health and education. He told Star Weekly that hitting the same employment and participation levels in the west as the rest of Melbourne would add 25,000 workers and $3 billion to the state’s economy. “We can help do this by investing in health and education; that would help significantly in creating jobs in the area.”
He said modelling by Victoria University’s Centre of Policy Studies suggested building a new hospital alongside VU could create about 2000 new jobs. The state government allocated $50 million to develop a business case and designs for a new Footscray Hospital, with three sites being considered. WoMEDA deputy chair, VU vice-chancellor Peter Dawkins, said a new state-of-the-art Footscray Hospital on the campus could underpin a major precinct redevelopment. “It would mean creating a world-class
asset in Footscray, built around an employment and jobs cluster and the synergies between community health, private health and R&D in health, sport and active living, which Victoria University excels in.” Western Health chief executive Russell Harrison welcomed the possibility of Footscray Hospital being rebuilt alongside Victoria University as part of a new health hub. “The new hospital will be a key piece of infrastructure in the community as well as an essential health facility,” he said.

Hans puts his spin on healthy living Mr Peisl became a successful property developer, building houses and flats from Williamstown to Werribee. After retiring, he was invited to join the Victoria Police Cycling Club – even though he wasn’t an officer. “I used to ride bikes – a lot,” Mr Peisl said. “My longest ride was in 1996 from Adelaide to Ayers Rock.” When his knees gave up, he substituted a road bike for spin class at BayFit Leisure Centre in Altona North, where he goes five days a week, except when Morning Melodies is on.
He also pumps iron after starting weight training in his mid-70s. “I enjoy sport, I enjoy playing with people who have got the same interests, like fitness,” Mr Peisl said. “Ten years ago, I got a knee replacement, and two years later I had the second one on the other knee, and exactly 18 months ago I had a heart valve replacement. “I think that this type of exercise is helping me with my health, plus I like to be with people who have got the same hobby.”

Altona’s Hans Peisl can still out-pedal most 20 year-olds as he spins towards his 85th birthday on December 16. Mr Peisl was born in Germany, where he was a professional motorbike racer competing at elite level, including the 1953 European Championship. He came to Australia in 1955 and moved to the Altona area five years later. A diesel mechanic by trade, he did a stint on an oil rig in New Guinea before starting a building company with his uncle, and was known as the “builder who walked with bare feet and wore khaki pants”.
Maribyrnong residents are happy with their waste collection and libraries, yet unimpressed by traffic management, parking enforcement and planning outcomes, according to the council’s latest community survey. The 14th annual community survey, conducted by Metropolis Research, found overall satisfaction with the council’s performance had climbed slightly to 6.60 out of 10 – categorised as “good”. The score marks a small rise from last year’s 6.5, but remains below the peak of 6.83 recorded in 2013. The survey was carried out in September and October with 800 randomly selected households. The issues cited as most important coincided with those leaving people the least satisfied – traffic management, carparking, building, housing, planning and development. Metropolis Research’s report found satisfaction with the council was highest in Maidstone and Braybrook, lowest in Yarraville. Renters and those who had moved to Maribyrnong in the past five years were more satisfied than ratepayers and longer-term residents. Sense of community remained strong, as did a feeling of safety in public during the day. But one in five people still felt unsafe in and around Footscray CBD at night. Almost three in five respondent households contained a bike and almost two in five regularly cycled. The majority of respondents favoured prioritising cycling infrastructure over traffic flows and on-street carparking.

Western suburbs young people and the jobless at risk of falling between the cracks are set to benefit from a $1 million training boost. The Westgate Community Initiatives Group has received more than $1 million to deliver the Skills First Reconnect program, for 200 marginalised and disengaged learners across the west. The training will be provided to early school leavers and the long-term unemployed. Training and Skills Minister Gayle Tierney, visiting WCIG in Footscray on Thursday, said 27 Learn Locals and TAFEs were sharing in $19.8 million to support almost 3000 Victorians. “Reconnect is making things fair by giving every Victorian, no matter their postcode or background, access to the training and support they need to get a job, she said. “This funding will mean people living in Melbourne’s west get the support they need to take the next step in their education or career. Program participants will receive tailored support including one-on-one sessions with Reconnect coaches and learning and achievement plans. They will be helped to enrol in accredited courses that develop their core skills in areas such as literacy, numeracy, and vocational skills training. Support will also be provided for them to undertake workplace learning and to gain paid employment.

Hobsons Bay councillors, traders and residents have met at the site where the council earlier this year placed rocks and built a 45-metre stormwater pipe encased in a revetment. Ms Wisbey, a former secretary of Altona Life Saving Club, said she was dragged over the rocks during a recent swim. “I got dragged from head to toe on the rocks left behind,â€? she said. “My bathers were torn, so imagine a small child ‌ they would have been torn to shreds.â€? Ms Wisbey said she was “absolutely thrilledâ€? to hear the council was looking at remediation of the area “to make it safe againâ€?. Cr Tony Briffa convened a meeting on- site on Thursday with fellow ward councillor Sandra Wilson, senior council officers, Altona Village Traders Association head Kim Walsh, Altona Laverton Historical Society member Peter Weaver and a number of concerned residents. “We had a look at the area, discussed the

Police pledge crackdown By Goya Dmytryshchak Police have vowed to crack down on trouble-makers around Hobsons Bay’s beaches in the wake of a holiday rental being wrecked by partygoers and an attempted car jacking at Altona. The Hobsons Bay summer policing crew is up and running from this week, mainly focused on Altona. Sergeant Adam Wojcik said there would be “zero tolerance” for antisocial behaviour.
‘‘
We won’t be tolerating antisocial behaviour
’’
- Adam Wojcik
“We’ll be working every hot day possible to ensure people who go down to the Altona and Williamstown beaches can do so safely, and we won’t be tolerating antisocial behaviour from those who choose to partake in that type of activity,” he said. He said uniformed and covert police would be targeting offences such as drinking in public, offensive behaviour, shop stealing and theft of personal belongings from the beach. “Obviously, the train line brings people from everywhere into Altona,” Sergeant Wojcik said. “When they do, we’ll be there and making our presence known.” Smoking on the beach or drinking alcohol in public are each punishable with a $200 fine. Indecent language could cost $317, while antisocial behaviour could cop a $634 fine. Inspector Michelle Young said it was up to beachgoers to know where the no-alcohol areas were. “Apart from if you’re at a licensed area, the public areas are dry zones,” she said.

She urged people to use the beach lockers to store their valuables. There are 60 lockers next to Norfolk Cafe opposite Altona beach available for hire seven days during opening hours. People can hire a locker by showing photo ID
and buying a $5 waterproof wristband from the cafe. “Police remain very committed to retaining the safe environment and we have dedicated police who work very hard to ensure that occurs,” Inspector Young said.

Brooklyn waste bust One of Australia’s largest waste transport companies has been fined for carrying hazardous industrial material with an expired permit at Brooklyn. Veolia Environmental Services was fined more than $7500 for transporting prescribed industrial waste with an expired Environment Protection Authority vehicle permit under a joint EPA and VicRoads operation targeting random trucks in McDonald Road. Veolia, a French-owned company, has operated in McDonald Road since 1997 and handles hazardous waste in various forms including sludge, liquid and soil. Tim Eaton, EPA head of assessment, said officers detected a Veolia vehicle with a permit that had expired more than 18 months before. “The vehicle had just transported over 5000 kilograms of prescribed industrial waste to a facility licensed to receive it but, disappointingly, it didn’t have the right permits and documentation and should not have been on the road with that load at all,” he said. Mr Eaton said the waste was known as sandy spent catalyst, which is leftover from processing crude oil. “This involves prescribed industrial waste which would be detrimental to the environment if it were to escape,” he said. “There’s no doubt it would also have posed a public health risk.” Veolia is likely to face more inspections of its fleet, the EPA says. State barges ahead with tunnel By Benjamin Millar The cost of building the West Gate Tunnel has blown out by more than $1 billion amid claims the state government is acting with “astounding hypocrisy” in rushing to sign contracts. Builders CPB/John Holland began moving into a compound near Whitehall Street in Footscray on Tuesday, in preparation to begin work on the northern tunnel portal in January. The West Gate Tunnel project will now cost at least $6.7 billion to build, up $1.2 billion from previous estimates. In 2015,Transurban and the state government
claimed “no state funds” would be required for the project. In 2016 the state government announced it was allocating $1.5 billion but by Tuesday it had confirmed it was spending $2.7 billion. The Greens and the state Coalition had earlier vowed to block key legislation needed to help fund the toll road after planning minister Richard Wynne gave the project the green light. Western suburbs Greens MP Colleen Hartland and Liberal MP Bernie Finn warned they would use the upper house to help block the 10-year extension of CityLink tolls – a lynchpin of the project’s funding model.
Cafe match kicks goals A team of “ageing amateurs” has beaten Bayside College’s finest in an annual charity soccer match supporting the community’s most vulnerable in the lead-up to Christmas. Led by Williamstown MP Wade Noonan, last Friday’s match at the Altona North campus raised $865.70 for Williamstown’s Helping Hand Cafe. Founded by former street kid Robert Adams, the cafe hosts a free weekly lunch program at Williamstown Church of Christ. “We usually get between 30 and 50 people every Tuesday,” he said. “There’s more people coming and even little kids – I had to get a high chair. “In the 12 years I’ve done it, we’ve served 27,000 meals and we’ve given out 25,000 bags of fruit and vegies.” Mr Noonan said this year’s match pitted a team of “ageing amateurs against Bayside
College’s deep pool of soccer talent”, with his side winning 7-4. His side had players from Victoria University, Williamstown Football Club and Qenos. “During the lead-up to Christmas, it’s a terrific opportunity for Bayside College students to play a game against members of the community whilst raising funds for this wonderful service,” Mr Noonan said. “I’m so grateful for the work of the Helping Hand Cafe in Williamstown. “I think the students went a bit easy on us this year because my team celebrated a rare victory.” Goya Dmytryshchak Bayside College students Archie and Kaemon with Wade Noonan and Helping Hand boss Robert Adams. But the state government has locked in taxpayers to pick up the bill should such a move occur, signing a contract that allows the government to pay for the road and its operation if Parliament opposes toll extension. The state government claims the new $6.7 billion price tags reflect “massive improvements” to the project’s scope, including longer tunnels, additional noise walls and the creation of open spaces. The contract signing comes just days after almost 30 of Australia’s leading transport and urban planning experts slammed the West
Gate Tunnel project as “an expensive strategic mistake” that the state government must immediately ditch. Mr Finn told Parliament that the project “is a stinker”. Transurban chief executive Scott Charlton said the first of two tunnel boring machines will be ordered in the next few weeks to begin a project that will add “an iconic addition to the city’s transport network”. The project is due to be complete in 2022. A Say No to West Gate Tunnel rally will be held from 11am on Sunday at Brooklyn Reserve.

VCAT approves Aitken Street plan By Goya Dmytryshchak Plans for a four-storey, 26-dwelling apartment block at 27 Aitken Street in Williamstown have been approved on appeal to the state’s planning tribunal. The Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal overturned Hobsons Bay council’s refusal to grant a permit to Aitken Properties to demolish the existing single-level industrial building to develop the site. The plans include 30 car and 10 bicycle spaces. Eighty-one objections had been received

by the council, with the main issues relating to neighbourhood character, heritage, height and bulk, parking, traffic, overshadowing, overlooking, noise and internal amenity concerns. VCAT member Geoffrey Rundell said he was satisfied the building would have “no adverse impacts on the nearby valued heritage dwellings, hotels and the adjoining Stevedore Club. He said the proposed building, with a recessed fourth level, would fit into the emerging character of the area.
“In this area, different buildings are to be expected and celebrated, Mr Rundell said. “I am satisfied that the proposal would not impose unacceptable amenity impacts on its residential neighbours to the west and south and is not an overdevelopment. Mr Rundell said the council had withdrawn its objections about parking and that he was satisfied four visitor spaces was enough. He was also “satisfied that the traffic volumes will be low. It was the second time the proposal had gone before VCAT.

Council pledges to make good on artwork Maribyrnong council has promised to make amends for accidentally stripping a disability pride mural off a Footscray wall. Star Weekly last week reported that Seddon artist Larissa MacFarlane was devastated when contractors tore down a commissioned artwork created by a team of than 40 people and artists living with disability. Carlie Park, one of the people who took part in the project, said the situation had distressed everyone who shared deeply personal artwork for the Disability Pride wall. Ms Park, who lives with chronic illness, said many participants were making their first public acknowledgement of living with disability and the experience of having the artwork erased was deeply upsetting. “I was really shocked and upset and dismayed about what happened,” she said. “It was kind of a big deal for me, a bit of a coming out with the artwork and saying I have a condition that will affect me for the rest of my life.” Ms Park said hundreds of hours had been spent on a project that provided a real sense of camaraderie and belonging. “It was a wonderful environment to be in, with people talking openly about disability.” She said the experience had sparked three questions – whether contract cleaners were going to be the arbitrators of street art, what the act says about respect for people with disabilities, and what the council will do to compensate people in the community who had put their hearts on display for the project. Since reporting the removal of the disability pride mural, Star Weekly has received reports of a number of other artworks being removed from private property in and around Footscray without permission.

Maribyrnong council chief executive Stephen Wall said the council is in discussion with the artists who created the original installation to determine their preference for reinstalling the work. “We will then work with them to achieve this,” he said. Benjamin Millar 12375123-CG50-17 10061990-01

Braybrook tops burglary count By Goya Dmytryshchak Braybrook is the most burgled suburb in Maribyrnong and Hobsons Bay, the RACV’s yearly analysis of burglary hot spots in greater Melbourne shows. One in 44 Braybrook homes was burgled last financial year, giving the suburb a “riskier than average” rating. The city of Maribyrnong average was one in 67 households burgled, while the state average
was one in 69. Postcode 3032, which includes the suburb of Maribyrnong, had the lowest burglary rate in the municipality, with one in 79 homes broken into. One in 62 homes was burgled in postcode 3012, covering Brooklyn, Maidstone, Kingsville and West Footscray. Footscray and Seddon households had a one in 68 chance of being broken into, with this number dropping to one in 77 in Yarraville. The RACV’s Bryce Prosser said 17 per cent of
all burglaries happened through unlocked or open doors or windows. “We encourage all Victorians to put in place measures to protect their homes, including installing good-quality locks on doors and windows and installing curtains and blinds to remove valuable items from plain sight,” he said. Every Hobsons Bay suburb received a “safer than average” rating, with an overall average of one in 117 homes burgled.
Williamstown and Williamstown North recorded the lowest number at one in 149, closely followed by Altona and Seaholme at one in 147. The highest chance of being burgled in Hobsons Bay was in Altona Meadows and Laverton, where one in 102 homes was burgled. One in 104 homes in Altona North were burgled and one in 112 in Newport. The RACV said its data was compiled using data from bodies such as the Australian Bureau of Statistics and the Crime Statistics Agency.
Learn from the masters Inner-west arts organisations have marked a five-year partnership milestone by gifting their insight to others. Arts West, an alliance of nine Maribyrnong and Hobsons Bay arts organisations, has launched a guide to collaboration in the arts and culture sector. The alliance hopes the guide will help other arts organisations get the most out of working together. Arts West: Collaboration in Practice explores the formation of Arts West, the alliance’s structure and processes, and how collaboration is sustained. The guide reveals insights taken from the five-year formal collaboration between 100 Story Building, cohealth Arts Generator, Footscray Community Arts Centre, Snuff Puppets, Western Edge Youth Arts, Women’s Circus and The Substation. Women’s Circus executive director Devon Taylor said the Footscray-based arts organisation has gained a number of benefits from being part of the alliance.
“It does require time and effort, but it has provided tangible things like professional development and things we wouldn’t otherwise have the opportunity to have,” she said. “The intangibles are a sense of community connection with other arts organisations – it has helped develop a really vibrant and rich cultural base here in the west.” Ms Devon said the member groups share not only a common geography in being based in and around Footscray, but also a strong focus on community engagement. She said the guide contained lessons and valuable insights for other organisations wishing to undertake a similar project, sharing the highs and lows of the journey to date. The partnership was supported by Creative Victoria and Gandel Philanthropy. Arts West: Collaboration in Practice is available for download via artswest.com.au/ resources

MY PLACE Williamstown teenager Holly Glavich is working hard to help others. She speaks with Goya Dmytryshchak. What’s your connection to Hobsons Bay? I have lived in Williamstown my whole life. I went to the local kinder, Williamstown Primary and have just started year 11 at Williamstown High. I met my best friends as a baby and we all still live here. Last year, I volunteered at Williamstown Hospital for six weeks through a school program. What do you like about Williamstown? I love living by the beach in Williamstown. I spend my whole summer at the beach so it’s extremely convenient to have it a stone’s throw away. I love the old architecture of Williamstown. My house is over 100 years old. What would you change? I would change the newer architecture. I really don’t like it, the old buildings and houses in Williamstown are beautiful. What’s your favourite local cafe or eatery? (Marco De Luca)
Definitely Hellenic Republic. I love Greek food and culture. Can you tell me about your World Challenge trip? Towards the end of 2018, World Challenge will be taking approximately 50 students from Williamstown High School to Swaziland and Mozambique in southern Africa for four weeks. I will be volunteering in a medical centre aimed to help people suffering with AIDS. We fly into Johannesburg, South Africa, and head straight to Swaziland. After three
weeks of work, we trek over the mountains into Mozambique, rest a little and then head back to Australia. I must raise $8650 for this adventure so every donation counts. I have organised Bunnings barbecues, a massive garage sale and mini fete, movie nights and other fundraisers. Here is the link to my GoFundMe page:
gofundme.com/ezm4h8-world-challenge-trip What are you passionate about and why? I am passionate about helping people less advantaged than myself. I aspire to work as a nurse in developing countries or in the army. World Challenge has provided me with the
perfect opportunity to begin my work and make a difference in the world. What’s something people would be surprised to know about you? At the moment I am working five jobs to save for World Challenge.

SPORT Altona draws a tough start to season Spotswood will open the 2018 Western Region Football League division 1 season on home soil against Wyndhamvale at McLean Reserve on April 14. The Woodsmen will face both of last year’s grand finalists, Deer Park and Sunshine, along with trips to Altona and Hoppers Crossing in a tough opening five rounds. Altona has drawn the short straw, facing reigning premiers Deer Park on the day it will unfurl its fifth flag of its ongoing dynasty. The Vikings have the most daunting early season draw of any team with games against last year’s grand finalists, both on the road, in the opening three rounds. There is going to be no respite for the Vikings at home either with a rivalry game against Spotswood wedged in between for their home opener in round two. If nothing else, Altona will get a chance to
gauge where it is at early in the season. In a bulked up division 2, which now has eight teams with the addition of Point Cook and the elimination of the bye, North Footscray will begin its premiership defence at home in a grand final re-match with Yarraville-Seddon. Yarraville-Seddon’s first home game will be against newly promoted Parkside in the second week. Parkside, last year’s division 3 premiers, will host Albanvale in its first game back in the second tier, while West Footscray has a home game against Newport Power. The Power’s home opener will come in round two when it entertains newcomer Point Cook, which transferred its senior teams from the Victorian Amateur Football Association to the WRFL in the off season. Lance Jenkinson

■ Merv
Hughes admitted his year 8 English teacher probably never imagined in his wildest dreams Merv would one day have the word “author’ after his name. Merv may have been no Rhodes Scholar, yet he has just brought out his latest book (his fifth), BBQ, Beer and B.S. Merv’s life motto is: Find something you like doing then try to make a living out of it. These days he works in the media, has a national television fishing show, hosts cricket tours all over the world, does numerous speaking engagements and writes the odd book. He is still a passionate western suburbs boy and is currently the face of the membership campaign for the Werribee Football Club, where he played 95 senior games. Merv has a three-word description for his latest writing exploit: “Ideal Christmas Gift.”
■ Western
Bulldogs president Peter Gordon announced at the members’ Christmas party last week that the club had not only turned another trading profit (third in a row above $1 million) for the year, but also that the Bulldogs are net debt free. No one I know can remember the Bulldogs being so financially strong. Well done to all concerned. Last week, Barkers Cafe hosted the past players and officials Christmas lunch, at which Ian Foreman stood down from the committee after a 42-year term. Ian, an unsung hero of the red, white and blue, played two senior games back in 1952.

Rams, Eagles split points By Lance Jenkinson It was the battle of the conference’s top and bottom sides, but the conclusion to draw from the two-game series between last-placed Newport Rams and front-running Sunshine Eagles is that it might be an even tighter division than we first thought. The sides went hammer and tong for 18 innings over two games in the past week for an aggregate score of 6-6. Newport fumbled a two-run lead in the mid-week game to lose 4-3, but it was probably lucky to come away with a 3-2 win at KC White Reserve on Saturday. After the series split, the evidence suggests Newport is well and truly in the finals picture and the gulf between first and last is closing fast. The Rams are actually just two and a half games out of first place after 15 rounds and could have been ranked a lot higher if not for a string of close losses. That’s what makes Saturday’s gutsy one run
win so important for the Rams as it showed they can win a close one. “We’ve lost four or five games by one run, some of them we’ve been leading for most of the game, but we’re just struggling to close them out, which was the case on Tuesday when we were 3-1 up and ended up losing 4-3,” Rams player-coach David Asp said. “It was a tough loss against them on Tuesday, so it was good to come back and pinch one off them. “It was good to play nine innings of baseball. “If you string a couple of wins together you can sort of go from bottom to being in the mix pretty quickly.” Newport’s victory was sealed with a hit from 14-year-old Keenan Spence. An infielder, Spence is one of the most exciting young prospects at the Rams. “He stepped up and drove in the winning run, which was impressive,” Asp said. “You’ve got to keep reminding yourself that he’s 14 years old because you wouldn’t think it with the look of him, he’s taller than me. “He’s getting one or two hits a game, so he’s

keeping his spot and he’s not there just to fill up the numbers.” Import Riley Barr threw a gem of a game on the mound. Barr has been loosely restricted to a 60-70 pitch count as he recovers from his European season, but still managed to negotiate seven innings for the Rams. “Riley’s been fantastic for us,” Asp said. “He does the job week in week out.” Newport has a crucial final home game against Sandringham on Sunday before the mid-season break. In women’s division 2, Footscray stunned ladder leader Springvale in an 8-3 victory at Benbow Street on Saturday. The third-placed Bulldogs became the first team to inflict defeat on the Vales this season. The Bulldogs host winless Melbourne on Sunday. In men’s division 2, Williamstown kept hold of first place with a 4-3 win over Ballarat City at Greenwich Reserve on Sunday. The Wolves will meet Port Melbourne in a mid-week game tonight at Murphy Reserve before a trip to Werribee on Sunday.

all smiles at the Braybrook-based running stables of Terry McGarity after two of his runners quinella-ed the Terang Gift recently. Megan McMahon just edged out clubmate Jody Richards to take the prestigious 120-metre event. The major athletic events on the horizon locally are the St Albans Gift on January 20 and the Maribyrnong Gift at Pennell Reserve on Australia Day (January 26). McMahon won the St Albans race last year. Another McGarity product, Nathan Burfitt, followed his third in the mile at Terang with a runner-up placing at Northcote last Sunday. McGarity, who turned 71 recently, is one of the fittest men you will ever meet and his coaching record in a variety of sports is remarkable.

Altona takes charge over local rivals Top-of-the-ladder Altona showed local rivals Yarraville-Footscray who’s the boss in a 85-70 western derby win in Bowls Victoria premier division at Civic Parade on Saturday. The A’s went from zero to 100 in the blink of an eye, while the Bulldogs barely found a way out of first gear all game. It was the kind of performance that screamed to the rest of the competition that the A’s are the real deal. “I’m not surprised to be honest because we’ve got that capability in us, we’re a really solid team,” A’s co-coach Ben Loughlin said. “This one was a big one for us because Yarraville are a good side.” Altona burst out of the blocks to create a nice lead of 20 shots at the halfway mark. The A’s were superbly led by the Dane McKinnon and Brad Peck rinks, which started on fire. Yarraville-Footscray mounted a comeback about three quarters of a way through the game, closing the gap to within 12 shots, but
that would be its only chance to gloat as it was otherwise all smiles for the A’s. “We got off to a really good start through Dane and Brad – both rinks were about 12-1 out of the gates,” Loughlin said. “They just gave us a good buffer early and we went on with it. “They had a bit of a run, but then Brad Peck got a five to kick us out a bit again and we went on with it from there.” There is usually a lot of chatter on the greens when these two rivals lock horns, but it was an unusually subdued atmosphere this time around – well, at least on one side of the green. “There was a bit of chat before the game,” Loughlin said. “We got off to such a good start, up 25 to 10 early and that took a bit of the fight out of them. “They didn’t have a lot of enthusiasm after that.” Peck’s rink was the biggest winner on the day for the A’s, thrashing Jamie Pearce 29-15. Brett Foley had a nail-biting 14-12 win over Ray
Coulter and McKinnon made it a lions share for the A’s with a 24-19 win over Chris Ball. Yarraville-Footscray’s only winning rink came through Wayne Roberts, who beat Nathan Wilson 24-18 in a powerhouse match-up. “It was a cracker of a game,” Loughlin said. “Nathan was on top of the skips table before today, he’s probably second or third now, but Wayne Roberts is as good as any player who has played the game in Victoria. “We don’t need every rink to win – we’ve got to win as a 16 and Nathan kept him pretty quiet and only lost by about five in the end.” Altona can head into the break on top of the table with a win over MCC on Saturday, and Yarraville-Footscray will be looking to close the gap on the top four when it travels to Clayton. Bulldogs rapt with win By Lance Jenkinson Footscray’s belief is growing by the week in Victorian Premier Cricket. The Bulldogs had no right to think 122 would be enough to beat Frankston Peninsula at the Merv Hughes Oval on Saturday, yet they were confident of being able to defend the total. It turned out to be the second lowest score of any first XI game at the weekend, but the Bulldogs turned it into a winning one by bowling Frankston Peninsula out for 112. Bulldogs captain Dylan Kight could only marvel. “It is a crazy game, it definitely is after days like today,” he said. “It’s easy saying it now, but we did genuinely think 122 was going to be competitive enough, but obviously we were well under par. “There was plenty in the wicket and it never dried out during the day, so we knew if we bowled well, we could build some pretty good pressure on them and we did.” Footscray’s innings was littered with failures, but it also told a story of some gallant
performances against the tide. There were four ducks and four single-figure scores, but the Bulldogs found enough in the success stories to secure what turned out to be a winning score. Hayden Butterworth was a pillar of the top order, maintaining a level of composure while the wickets tumbled around him. He made 33 off 80 and proved a steadying influence. “He just stuck at it,” Kight said. “He played a lot of classy shots.” Kight played a magnificent captain’s knock of 39 off 67 balls, including three fours and a six. He was on his way to a big score until left stranded mid-pitch by a Hamish Winter-Irving call for a run that ended in disaster. At least Winter-Irving made amends, producing a match-winning 25 not out to go with his 1-16 off 10 overs late in the day. Winter-Irving was, however, out of pocket for a beer after running out his skipper. “Hamish hit one to mid-wicket and decided to take off, I trusted him and I was out by a good half a pitch – he bought me a beer, so he’s trying to make up for it,” Kight said with a laugh.
“Hamish has been awesome this season. He’s found the form he had for the last two years leading up to the end of last year when he got injured.” While Winter-Irving built tremendous pressure with his bowling, it was far from a one-man show. Lucas Dredge bowled with ferocity to take 3-19 off eight, including the key wicket of Frankston Peninsula top scorer Brodie Symons, bowled for 39. Jonah Koch had the youthful enthusiasm to take 2-20 off five, while Dean Russ hammered the final nail in the visitors’ coffin with 2-18 off 10 overs. Footscray’s memorable win solidifies its spot in the top three ahead of a blockbuster against ladder leader Carlton in the final two-day game before Christmas at Princes Park starting on Saturday. “It’s a huge game,” Kight said. “It’s always a good contest with Carlton and they’re the benchmark this year so far. “If we can get stuck in, do what we do and get away with a win, we can be top two by Christmas.”
Spotswood has made a flying start to its Cricket Victoria Women’s Community Cricket Competition north west shield Twenty20 campaign with a 21-run win over Edinburgh at McLean Reserve on Saturday. The Woodswomen scored at better than five runs an over to reach 3-107 off 20 overs, with Kareena Jacobsen-Logan leading the way with 39 not out, including seven fours in an entertaining innings. There were also contributions for the Woodswomen from Tracey Gleeson (24), Kim Borg (18) and Tara Crisp (10). The required run rate was too much to handle for Edinburgh, which finished 5-86. Borg was the star of the show for the Woodswomen with 2-2 off four overs. Jacobsen-Logan was the other multiple wicket taker with 2-22 off four. Top-of-the-ladder Spotswood will travel to Gillon Oval on Sunday to face Carlton-Brunswick in the third T20 of the season. In the west division, Altona Roosters won a thriller over Melton Centrals by three runs at Blackwood Drive Reserve. Harmony Nally was the standout with the bat for the Roosters with 25 not out in her team’s 6-106 off 20 overs. Melton Centrals just fell short of the target, finishing with 6-103. Rebeca Cooke led the way with the ball for the Roosters with 2-20, while Katelin Nolton produced 1-8 off four. In the Victorian Turf Cricket Association senior division, Yarraville Club has maintained its lead with a nine-run win over Spotswood at McLean Reserve. Set 177 for victory, the Clubbers reached the target four down on the back of some brilliant batting from opener Will Sheridan (65) and second drop Joey Blake (84 not out). Seddon has leapt up to third after a 47-run victory over Tullamarine at Hanmer Reserve. The Dockers skittled Tulla for just 117 and cruised past the target to finish on 8-164. In north west division, Skand Vohra took 5-43 to help guide Laverton to a 23-run win over Keilor Park, while Leigh Wilson (74) and Shane Windridge (62) were key to Druids win over PEGS. Altona North lost for the first time this summer by 58 runs to Aberfeldie, but managed to keep a grip on top spot. Lance Jenkinson
