Open water, big swims Victoria’s peak open-water swimming event will be held at Williamstown beach in December. Williamstown Swimming and Life Saving Club and Swimming Victoria will host the third Victorian Open Water Championships and the Williamstown Open Water (WOW) Challenge. Swimming Victoria chief executive Jason Hellwig said more than 1000 entrants were expected, including the best open-water swimmers in the world. But he said the event had something for everyone. “With all distances open to all swimmers, it’s also unquestionably one of the most exciting and popular community open-water challenges in the country,” he said. Distances range from the 750-metre Optus Junior Dolphin “Chase the Champs” kids challenge to the 10 -kilometre marathon. This year’s event will also include a multi-class event for swimmers of all abilities. The Victorian Open Water Championships and WOW Challenge will be held at the Williamstown Swimming and Life Saving Club at Williamstown Beach on Sunday, December 17. Fight pledge on tunnel By Benjamin Millar and Goya Dmytryshchak Community groups are vowing to fight tooth and nail for improvements to the West Gate Tunnel after the $5.5 billion toll road for Melbourne’s west was given the green light. Planning Minister Richard Wynne signed off on Monday on the Environmental Effects Statement (EES), the final hurdle for the unsolicited proposal by toll road operators Transurban. The project will connect the West Gate Freeway to the Port of Melbourne, CityLink and the Melbourne CBD via twin tunnels under Yarraville, three new bridges over the Maribyrnong River and an elevated

freeway above Footscray Road. Mr Wynne is recommending the state government acquire about 10 homes on Hyde Street in Yarraville at the request of owners facing more than 1500 extra trucks past their doors each day. The toll road was opposed by Hobsons Bay and Melbourne councils and residents in Spotswood, South Kingsville, Altona North and Brooklyn, who face the prospect of thousands more trucks on their streets. Better West – Spotswood South Kingsville Residents Group spokeswoman Rosa McKenna said the community, particularly Brooklyn, had been “hung out to dry”. “We don’t feel we’ve been listened to,” she said.

Don’t Destroy Millers Road spokesman Chris Dunlevy said the increased truck traffic would be devastating for Brooklyn, already Melbourne’s most polluted suburb. “The Brooklyn community is beyond shattered,” he said. “We trusted the process and have been completely let down.” Mr Dunlevy said offering some double glazing for the residents on Millers Road would do nothing for the congestion, pollution and safety problems coming their way. “The state government should hang their heads in shame – RIP Brooklyn,” he said. Mr Wynne says the project will slash congestion, reduce travel times and create 6000 jobs.

“There will be significant impacts during construction, but we’re getting the planning right to ensure disruptions are minimised and both the community and the environment are protected,” he said. Mr Wynne has rejected calls by the Maribyrnong Truck Action Group (MTAG) for the filtration of tunnel ventilation emissions and for truck curfews to be enshrined in law. MTAG secretary Martin Wurt said the group was outraged concerns of the community and health and air quality experts had been ignored in a “flawed” project that would funnel an extra 4000 trucks a day on to Williamstown Road. Construction will start in early 2018 and is due to be completed by the end of 2022.

Parking meters back in favour By Benjamin Millar Parking meters in Footscray and Yarraville may be switched back on next year after Maribyrnong council adopted a long-awaited paid parking policy. The council has lost close to $5 million in revenue since it stopped paid parking in Yarraville and central Footscray two years ago. Councillors last week adopted a redrafted Destination Parking Management Policy, 18 months after a previous draft of the policy was voted down by the former council for being

too vague. The policy requires the preparation of “parking management precinct plans” across Maribyrnong over a number of years, prioritised according to the size and business of each precinct. Parking fees will only be considered once demand exceeds 85 per cent of capacity and time or use restrictions have already been applied. “Fee controls will be introduced only where the time and/or use restrictions have been unsuccessful in restoring occupancy to the desirable range,” the policy states.

The 2015 parking meter freeze followed a sustained campaign by Yarraville businesses against council’s plan to introduce paid parking to the area, with vandals smashing a number of the machines. The saga led to a Yarraville resident assaulting two councillors after a fiery council meeting. Councillors voted to switch off Yarraville’s parking meters and turned off central Footscray’s machines at the same time. A joint Melbourne University and Monash University study last year found takings by Yarraville traders dropped an average of

24 per cent after paid parking was introduced. The council has been losing an estimated $200,000 each month the machines are switched off. In moving a motion to adopt the policy, councillor Gina Huynh said the evidence of the need for a better strategy was causing her to back down from her election policy of making parking free across Maribyrnong. Cr Sarah Carter said her view had always been that the Yarraville meters had been rushed in without proper justification.

Choir conductor Doug Heywood is thrilled to be conducting Carols by Candlelight for another year. (Damjan Janevski)

Conductor on point for another year Williamstown resident Doug Heywood is rehearsing for his 30th year conducting Vision Australia’s Carols By Candlelight on Christmas eve. This year also marks the event’s 80th anniversary. “You always get an adrenalin rush, it doesn’t matter how many times you do it,” Mr Heywood said. “I’ve conducted the whole Messiah, countless times. It’s a fantastic piece of music; this year will be the 250th year since it was written.” Mr Heywood said the first rehearsal with 228

choristers was held on Saturday. “The first rehearsal, where some of them haven’t seen each other for 12 months since the last carols, is like a family get-together,” he said. “It is like a big 230-voice family.” Then there will be four piano rehearsals and two rehearsals at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl where the show will be held. Mr Heywood was hard-pressed to name his favourite carol, but said the The Twelve Days of Christmas was “a beauty”. “It’s a lot of fun and a great piece of writing.” This year’s event will be hosted by Today

Extra hosts Sonia Kruger and David Campbell, with a star-studded lineup including Anthony Callea, Tim Campbell, Marina Prior, Silvie Paladino, David Hobson and Denis Walter. More than 2.3 million viewers across Australia tuned in to watch the carols on Channel Nine last year. It’s Vision Australia’s biggest fundraiser with 100 per cent of profits from ticket sales going towards services for children who are blind or have low vision. Last year, more than $1.2 million was raised.

A mother and daughter are warning people to lock their car doors after escaping a potential carjacking in Altona on Saturday. The mother, who asked not to be named, was travelling west in Queen Street, just west of the Pier Street roundabout, about 10.15pm. She said a youth “with dead eyes” suddenly appeared in front of her station wagon. “He had put up his hand to stop us and I’m just thinking, he’s just being a dickhead, as kids do, playing chicken on the road or trying to be a smarty pants,” she said. “He just kept looking over to the park [Logan Reserve] where his mates were obviously and then he waved them over. “That’s when [my daughter said ‘mum, mum, lock the door, lock the door.’ “I beeped the horn and then he’s tried to get in the front door. “I just thought, ‘I’m just gonna put my foot down and drive’. “As I drove past him, he grabbed onto the antenna, the aerial. “It was 101 per cent a carjacking attempt.” Detective Senior Constable Dave Baskin of Altona North police said people shouldn’t be alarmed. “This seems like a one-off incident I believe,” he said. Police are hoping anyone with information will come forward. The offender was described as African appearance, about 183 centimetres, with short dark hair, wearing a white T-shirt, three-quarter shorts and no shoes. Call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. Making a difference Footscray film-maker Amy Marks is joining a team of people helping create solutions to problems for people living with a disability. Marks is taking part in the TOM: Melbourne Makeathon, a 72-hour event starting on Friday where technology specialists join forces to develop creative and low-cost solutions to meet a range of challenges. The Victoria University screen media student lives with cerebral palsy, which affects her balance and gross motor skills. The 21-year-old, pictured above, came to prominence last year when she was one of five winners nationwide selected to create a short piece to screen on SBS television as part of National Youth Week. Her use of crutches makes carrying hand held cameras impossible, so her team of ‘makers’ have been tasked with

To date, more than 250 prototypes have been developed through TOM Makeathons globally. TOM stands for Tikkun Olam Makers, translated from Hebrew as makers who are “repairing the world”. In all, 100 people will take part in 11 challenges from Friday to Sunday, forming teams from engineers, craftspeople, occupational therapists and programmers. Oak’s future out on a grim limb An urgent request to the state planning minister may have come too late to save a Footscray oak tree from destruction following another chainsaw attack on the tree. Star Weekly last week reported that work had started to remove a giant oak that has been growing on a Hyde Street property since the late 1800s. Maribyrnong council has written to Planning Minister Richard Wynne asking him to place an interim protection order on the tree while its significance is assessed. But the property owner who wants the tree removed, a local developer, moved to pre-empt any decision by ordering a chainsaw attack on the trunk on Saturday afternoon. Neighbouring residents are still fighting the removal, refusing to allow the arborist undertaking the works access to their properties. They have collected more than 550 signatures on a petition calling for Maribyrnong council to establish a significant tree register to help protect other trees from a similar fate. Neighbour Lesley Walker said she hoped the destruction of the tree could be a catalyst for better laws, regulations and planning in Maribyrnong. Ms Walker and neighbour Leanne Webb used question time at last Tuesday night’s council meeting to press home the need for urgent action. Council planning services director Nigel Higgins, who told the meeting the damaged

oak is “a beautiful tree”, wrote to surrounding neighbours on Thursday informing them the interim protection order request had been lodged with the minister. A spokesman for Mr Wynne said the situation was a timely reminder for local councils that they had to do the necessary work to protect heritage, including trees. “The Minister for Planning will consider any requests on its merits, but the government cannot bail out councils who haven’t done their job,” the spokesman said. Greens senator Janet Rice, a Footscray resident and former Maribyrnong mayor, joined the call for the council to put stronger regulations in place so that significant trees were protected. “It is absolute madness that a tree of this significance and age is to be chopped down to make way for development,” she said. “The west already has a low tree density – we need more, not fewer, trees.”

Clarrie’s date with fame Lort Smith chief executive David Herman said the animal hospital and adoption hub received no operational government funding. “We exclusively rely on the generosity of supporters to continue to care for sick, injured or vulnerable animals and to support the pets of people in crisis,” he said. “All profits from the sale of the calendars will go directly to supporting Lort Smith’s vitally important work in 2018.” The competition to find cats for the 2019 calendar will start in February. Calendars, at a cost of $15 plus postage, are available from the Lort Smith hospital or its website.

Clarrie, a three-legged cat from Altona Meadows, stars in the 2018 Lort Smith Backyard Heroes calendar, which raises money to help animals in need. The two-year-old domestic cat was a joint winner in the people’s choice category of the calendar competition. Marlene Prow said a friend found Clarrie as a tiny stray kitten with an injured front leg. “He was so small, he sat in my hand,” she said. Clarrie’s injured leg had to be amputated at Lort Smith animal hospital. “He’s adapted very, very well to having three legs,” Ms Prow said. “Now, he’s best friends with three labs. My other cat doesn’t really like him still, but that’s OK.”

Hopheads bids for second venue By Goya Dmytryshchak Plans for a bar in Altona’s Pier Street have been submitted to Hobsons Bay council. Alan Swindon has applied for a permit to turn a former accounting office at 78 Pier Street into a Hopheads bar selling craft beer. He said it would have the same operator as Hopheads in Point Cook. While he has applied to trade from 9am to 11pm, Mr Swindon said he actually planned

to open about 3pm early in the week and from noon at the weekend. “The idea is to sell beer on tap in the premises and also if people want to buy take-away they can buy six-packs or more if they want to,” he said. He said Hopheads was “more like a small tavern” not a hotel. “They don’t serve any food, but you can bring your own food in there,” he said. He said the venue would accommodate

Melton bands push on Melton will play host to a FReeZA Push Start Battle of the Bands event on Saturday, December 2. The Western Metropolitan Regional Final heat will be held at Melton Community Hall, 238 High Street from 6-10.15pm. Hollow December is one band which will “battle it out” on Saturday. Bassist Dylan Jepsen, 18, said the alternative rock band was excited about being selected to compete in the Melton heat. A win in the heat would mean the band scores a spot in the grand final at Australia’s largest free festival, St Kilda Festival which attracts more than 400,000 visitors every year. “To get to play in St Kilda would be really cool, Dylan said. “We’d get a fair bit more exposure, which would be great.” The band is made up of five 18-year-old Williamstown High School students who have just completed year 12 exams. Now that school’s out, Dylan and his bandmates Johnsen Cummings (vocals,

guitar), Luca Martin (drums), Oliver Voogd (synthesiser/keyboard) and Amos Gibson (violin) – all self-proclaimed “music nerds” – are busy rehearsing. With hundreds of acts competing for a place in regionals, only nine can make it to the grand final on The Push Stage at St Kilda Fesival on Sunday, February 11. Entry is $8 online, or $10 at the door. The Melton event is fully supervised and for all ages. It is also a drug, smoke and alcohol free event. No pass outs available. “This creates diversity in the liquor industry. “You don’t go to these type of places to get drunk because it’s too expensive.” No on-site parking was proposed. A parking assessment by TTM Consultants, undertaken during the September school holidays, stated there was enough parking. “The parking surveys demonstrate there are 217-253 long-stay and seven-15 short-stay parking spaces during a typical Friday and Saturday evening,” it stated.

Roof scammer hits Yarraville

By Goya Dmytryshchak It will be like a scene from another century when the world’s largest wooden ship leaves Williamstown on Sunday. Tall ship Tenacious, which arrived in Williamstown last August, will depart for the voyage back to the UK. She is one of two tall ships operated by UN-accredited charity Jubilee Sailing Trust and was built for a mixed-ability crew. About half the crew of 40 have a disability and the ship has wheelchair-accessible rigging and masts, Braille signs and speaking compasses for the visually impaired, and vibrating alarms for the hearing impaired.

Inner-west residents are being warned to be alert for roof repair scam artists. An 83-year-old Yarraville man was home alone last week when he had a knock on the door from someone saying they were looking for an address in the area. “He said he was doing work in the area and he noticed that dad’s roof needed repair,” said the Yarraville man’s daughter, who asked not to be named. “Dad asked how much and the bloke said $800 and asked for $300 deposit.” Her father handed over $50, the only money he had. The woman caught wind of the situation and made sure she was at her father’s house when the man returned the next day demanding more money. An invoice he provided, seeking payment for work she said had not been done, included a name she later researched. She discovered he had been convicted in 2009 of fleecing more than $20,000 from a 78-year-old pensioner. The magistrate at the time described the man as “predatory” and “heartless”. The woman said she sent him packing, but her father was later harassed by phone to make further payments. She is warning people to remain vigilant. “There are a lot of elderly people living in the neighbourhood,” she said.

We are trying to create this microcosm on board

’’

- Peter Mitchell

Peter Mitchell, the trust’s pacific regional manager, said having a mixed-ability crew broke down barriers between people living with disability and the able-bodied. “The whole crew is sailing the ship but it’s important that people who are not familiar with disability get to change their own perception so they start to see the capability rather than the disability,” he said. “We’re trying to create this microcosm on board of what we think the world should look like, and that’s one that’s completely inclusive.” Kerrie Brindell, who has used a wheelchair since a car crash 43 years ago, has been on three voyages since February and became a watch leader. “You can live in the second-largest city in Australia and every day you roll out your front

door you know there’s going to be something that isn’t inclusive,” she said. “But you can pop on that ship and it’s just this socially-inclusive environment. “It’s freeing, and going aloft up into the crow’s nest – that’s awe-inspiring.

“The first voyage I did, I was out of the wheelchair, up on the netting at the front of the tall ship, so I was able to just lay back there and look at the empty wheelchair.” Tenacious departs from the rear of Seaworks between 10.30-11.30am on December 3.

VCAT knocks back townhouses By Goya Dmytryshchak Plans to transform an Altona street by replacing 10 single-storey villas with 14 double and triple storey townhouses have been rejected by the state’s planning tribunal. Applicant Brian Noordenne had applied to redevelop 4-22 Fresno Street, which is opposite Altona Tennis Club and several sporting ovals. The Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal on Monday upheld Hobsons Bay council’s refusal to grant a permit.

Member Megan Carew said the council’s view was that the proposal was not consistent with the neighbourhood character and was a poor response to both Fresno Street and to the neighbours to the rear. Ms Carew said she found the proposal acceptable when viewed from Fresno Street. “However, to the rear I have found that the proposal does not sufficiently respect the neighbourhood character or the amenity of adjoining properties,” she said. A resident to the rear, Alan Thompson, said

he would have lost his view of the sunset if the development had been allowed. “Higher density housing in Melbourne should not come at a huge loss of amenity to the neighbouring residents due to poor design and excessive bulk and height,” he said.

“A mix of quality two and three bedroom affordable homes would serve the district better.” Mr Noordenne said he was disappointed the tribunal refused the application instead of issuing an interim order to address the concerns. “We will amend the design in line with the tribunal’s recommendations and submit a new application to the City of Hobsons Bay,” he said. “We look forward to the amended design enhancing Fresno Street and the surrounding area.”

Setting sail into history “This was a first for Victoria.” A breakaway group of members formed the Williamstown Sailing Club in 1906. A yacht from the club, Thistle, was the first to win Australia’s oldest ocean race from Melbourne to Launceston, which started in 1907 – 45 years before the Sydney to Hobart. Mr Dawson said the club now had more than 650 members aged from one to 89 years old. “Many families can proudly boast generations of involvement,” he said. “The yacht Ericka was sailed for generations by the Erickson family, including John Erickson [the current yardmaster], his sister Margaret Erickson, his father Les Erickson [slipmaster for many years], and before that, his grandfather Charles Currie.” Anyone with information for the club can email info@hbyc.org.au or call 9397 6111. In 1951, the Hobsons Bay Yacht Club at Williamstown burned down, along with 45 yachts, 14 dinghies and all paper records in the clubhouse. Now, the club is seeking people’s stories and memorabilia to create a mural displaying some of its 129-year history. Commodore Tony Dawson said the club, fondly known as “Hobbos”, had experienced many tragedies and triumphs. “In 1925, a yacht at opening day capsized and three people passed away, including Mrs Ellen Dennis who was a past mayoress of Williamstown,” he said. “In 1899, the yacht Queenie sank and her seven crew drowned.” In 1900, as other clubs were only opening their doors to women once a year, the Hobbos began a Ladies Skippers Race. “Our first female senior member and keelboat owner was Dr Shirley Freeman, in 1974,” Mr Dawson said.

Ms Gonebale said the national tournament offered the opportunity to try out for the Australian indigenous schoolgirls’ netball team, the Budgies. “Elisa got involved last year – one of her friends played in the local club, the Footscray Shooting Stars,” Ms Gonebale said. “She was having a bit of a rough time at school with the

kids – it’s been really good for helping her build relationships and she has really refocussed at school.” Ms Gonebale said the girls only agreed to try out if they could help raise the money to cover costs such as uniforms, flights and accommodation. Since learning of their selection they have hosted fundraisers, including sausage sizzles and a garage sale. The cousins are hosting an online raffle, selling T-shirts online and doing odd jobs to raise the funds for the trip, along with seeking donations and sponsorship support. Blackshaws bid headed to VCAT Plans for a six storey, 420-dwelling development on the former Caltex site at South Kingsville are headed for the state’s planning tribunal. Newport Properties is proposing to develop the land at 38-48 Blackshaws Road and 24 Sutton Street. It lodged a Newport Village master plan with Hobsons Bay council in June, showing 273 apartments, a food and drink premises and

less parking than stipulated. It subsequently lodged an appeal to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal against the council’s failure to make a decision within the prescribed 60 days. The council states on its website that it was unable to assess the permit application because there was insufficient information. No to High Density in Newport spokesman Chris Turner said he hoped VCAT would look at the bigger picture.

“How much can our suburbs take before infrastructure is improved to cope with the number of residents that will be using the streets, schools and parking at train stations in Hobsons Bay?” he asked. “VCAT have been pretty easy on developers over the years. Let’s hope they back the council for this one.” Tract Consultants, acting for Newport Properties, did not immediately respond. In March last year, the same developer

proposed a 10-storey, 600-dwelling development for the site. The council did not make a decision on that plan within the prescribed period, but the developer’s appeal to VCAT was unsuccessful. The council later resolved that development on the site should be capped at six storeys and 420 dwellings. The Blackshaws Road VCAT hearing is scheduled for April.

Second Avenue works to take first priority Altona North’s Second Avenue shopping strip is set to have its speed reduced from 50km/h to 40km/h after a $530,000 upgrade. Hobsons Bay deputy mayor Tony Briffa said works, expected to start in late January, would include footpath and road widening and new pram ramps. “The Second Avenue shopping strip is such a hub of activity for our residents in the area, and we know plenty of people walk there from their nearby homes,” Cr Briffa said. “Traffic flow for vehicles will also be improved after we extend the kerb opposite the shops to allow for a wider roadway.” The road and carpark will be resurfaced between Cresser and Marion streets, after which the speed limit for vehicles on Second Avenue will reduce to 40 km/h. Most works are expected to be completed by Easter.

Councillor Sandra Wilson said a social gathering space with seating and landscaping would also be created. “Council engaged shoppers, traders and local residents and they gave us valuable feedback that we have incorporated into the project scope and design,” she said. “These works will breathe new life into this valuable community area and we are looking forward to our community enjoying the Second Avenue shops even more.” Goya Dmytryshchak

Schools in the money

Three schools in the Williamstown electorate will share almost $500,000 in state government funding for urgent repairs. Kingsville Primary School in Yarraville will receive $103,000 to repair the school roof and asphalt areas, re-lay concrete paving at the entrance and renew the asphalt playground. Williamstown High School will get $196,000 for maintenance works on the administration building at its Pasco Street campus. Altona North Primary School will receive $198,000 to replace and upgrade cracked and

damaged cladding on the school’s two main buildings. Williamstown MP Wade Noonan said the funding meant schools didn’t have to dip into their own budgets. “School budgets should be focused on educating students, not repairing leaky roofs,” he said. “These school buildings are well used, so from time to time they need some TLC.” Goya Dmytryshchak

Coles quiet for a cause By Goya Dmytryshchak Parents of children with autism have welcomed the weekly ‘Quiet Hour’ at Coles supermarket at Altona Meadows. Coles worked with Autism Spectrum Australia (Aspect) to roll out quiet hour at 68 stores nationwide. Every Tuesday from 10.30-11.30am, lighting will be halved, radios switched off, register and scanner volumes reduced and no trolleys will be removed from the shop floor.

PA announcements will be cut except in emergency and additional customer support staff will be available. Elizabeth Websdale, an Altona Meadows mother of two teenagers with autism, said when her children were younger they could become really upset and overwhelmed by sounds, noise and crowds when shopping. “I used to shop sometimes late at night when they were in bed and their dad could watch them instead,” she said. “Some single parent families don’t have that option.

“My son couldn’t handle all the bright fluorescent lights in some stores. I would put a cap and sunglasses on him to make the bright lighting bearable. “My daughter even now often wears headphones to cancel out some of the noise.” Angela Hickey-Sorbello, a Werribee mother of a son with autism, praised the move. “It’s great to see a big chain such as Coles leading the way,” she said. “I hope this is the start of things to come for all people on the autism spectrum.”

New plans for Edgewater hotel A multi-storey hotel and apartment complex has been recommended for approval on the site of the half-built Club Edgewater project. Star Weekly last month revealed an application had been lodged for 31 Edgewater Boulevard, for a 10-storey development containing a 68-room hotel, 123 dwellings, shops and a gym. The original Club Edgewater project was abandoned when Western Bulldogs and developer Prizac fell out in 2015. A report to Tuesday night’s City Development Special Committee stated the “high architectural quality and net community benefits” of the new development are reasons to allow a higher built form on the site, but the proposed 10-storey height was excessive. The report recommended approving the project, subject to a reduction to eight storeys and other minor conditions.

VU signs up for equality fight Victoria University is joining forces with other organisations in the west to promote The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence Against Women from November 25 to December 10. The university is taking part in the international campaign for the first time, helping to spread the word about gender equality. Vice-chancellor Peter Dawkins said the campaign tied in with the university’s growing push to promote respect and equality for women and stamp out sexual abuse and family violence. “When I took a strong stand on this subject I got a lot of positive response,” he said. “We released a Preventing Violence Against Women Ten Point Plan in 2016 … these things we are doing over the next week are a really good fit.” In August, VU appointed Marian Cronin as its respect and responsibility manager, tasking her with the university’s push to improve gender equality. Ms Cronin said the university would be offering a number of practical sessions as part of the 16 Days of Activism, including women’s financial empowerment seminars. Other events will include partnering with Women’s Health West for an online 16 Days Challenge, a talk about women’s relationship with the law and a panel on activism. MY PLACE Richard Spiteri is one of the residents involved in The Neighbourhood Project, a venture championing a summer of community action in Brooklyn. He speaks with Goya Dmytryshchak.

I moved here three years ago. I’ve only lived in Melbourne for 11 years and I moved to the inner west about five years ago and bought in Brooklyn about three years ago.

which we’re doing another one on December 9. So, that’s just a movie with Santa; there’s probably going to be some food trucks. We’re trying to get more people involved, but we usually meet once a month and then discuss what we’ve got ongoing.

What do you like about Brooklyn?

What’s your favourite local cafe or eatery?

I like the proximity to the city – I work in the CBD. It’s close to Altona beach. Relatively easy to get anywhere from here.

Brooklyn doesn’t have a cafe or a local eatery, so we’ve [The Neighbourhood Project] booked for the next 12 months – for the first Sunday of every month – for a coffee cart to come to the new Brooklyn park. Last week we did a bake sale in association with the school. One month before, about 170 people turned up. The really nice thing about the pop-up cafe is, people are not just coming to get a free coffee; they’re bringing their kids, bringing their dogs, bringing their family and they’re milling around for a couple of hours and socialising. The first one we had, there was graffiti on one of the rubbish bins – six of the residents bought cleaning equipment with them and cleaned off the graffiti.

What would you change? I think the past footprint of Brooklyn – it’s been seen as probably the poorer cousin in Hobsons Bay to Williamstown and Altona beach. It’d be nice to ramp up that footprint, that it’s not just an industrial area. Can you tell me about The Neighbourhood Project? The Neighbourhood Project is just a group of people that live in the Brooklyn community and at the moment, with help from council, we’re trying to do things to either beautify the suburb or just get more community involvement happening. We received a $30,000 funding grant from CoDesign Studio and then the council matched that $30,000, so we’ve been using that to put on a whole bunch of different community events. Last year, we did a Christmas movie night,

What’s something people would be surprised to know about you?

(Goya Dmytryshchak)

What’s your connection to Brooklyn?

I’m a bit of an amateur photographer. I don’t know if that’s a surprise though – I’m a pretty open book, really, so no one’s really surprised about anything.

F E A T U R E

Take the stress out of the packing process When a couple makes the decision to move into a retirement village, they’re faced with the daunting prospect of packing up their lives and making stuff fit into a new, usually much smaller, environment. The packing process needs to be tackled with a clear plan in mind to avoid a stressful nightmare. Here’s some handy questions – and answers. Who will get items that just won’t fit in the next home? Make a list as you go through your house, then make piles of items for different destinations – to a friend, relative, charity or even as part of a garage sale. Will existing furniture fit in the new place? Get a blueprint of the layout of the new home to find out the exact room dimensions. Knowing what will fit helps make the decision-making process more straightforward. Which rooms in your house should you pack up first? If you have attic storage, start there. Items stored in the roof space are likely to be the least used in normal life and most discardable. Or it could be the spare room or laundry cupboards that hide the most clutter. Ask yourself questions about each item, such as: • When was the last time I used this? • Does it serve a purpose in my new life? • Does it have irreplaceable sentimental value? • Will it last long or is repairing worth it? • Can I get by without it? • How often do I use it and for what purpose? • Do I know someone else who will benefit from it more than me? Am I being kind to myself during the process? Moving house is a significant change, one that can be physically exhausting and emotionally overwhelming. Factor in that moving from a beloved home to a retirement place can trigger deeper emotions, such as fear, grief or even resentment. Remind yourself that you don’t have to get rid of everything you treasure – that a cull will, in fact, simplify your life. If you can’t make up your mind about particular items, buy time and place them in storage until you better understand how you feel. Belongings are repositories of memories, so take time to reflect. It’s an important step in ultimately letting go.

Packing up and moving on can be both stressful and liberating.

And when the job’s finally done, celebrate the occasion with someone – you deserve it.

on entry. Both are carpeted and have built-in robes. The main bathroom is freshly renovated with marble tiling and a new made-to-measure glass shower door. Black tapware completes the look. A temperaturecontrolled gas water service has been installed. The open-plan kitchen, meals and lounge area features a huge Rinnai gas fireplace that heats the whole house with ease thanks to a void ceiling feature. The kitchen has floor-to-ceiling 2pac white soft-closing cabinetry, a porcelain sink, art deco-inspired green subway tiling

and Caesarstone benches including an island bench. Sliding doors lead to the undercover deck with timber ceiling detail, looking out to a synthetic lawn. A return deck feature doubles as a bench for outdoor alfresco dining, and there’s room for a trampoline. Upstairs, the rumpus has hardwood floorboards, a split-system and plumbed bar looking out to a balcony which has also been freshly tiled and waterproofed. A walk-in storage room with a light sensor is yet another new addition. The powder room here is handy for guests.

The main bedroom has a split-system, is carpeted and has a generous en suite renovated to tie-in with the main bathroom style below. The private balcony, waterproofed and re-paved, looks out to the park opposite. The double garage has a new timber-look door and door motor and has been rendered. Within walking distance of Williamstown North Primary School, Westbourne Grammar School and with cafes just across Melbourne Road, this one has it all. Samantha Freestone

55 MARIBYRNONG & HOBSONS BAY STAR WEEKLY \ NOVEMBER 29, 2017

FOOD REVIEW STARWEEKLY.COM.AU

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir gets on board the hot pot train This interesting new addition to the Footscray scene is at the parking lot right at the end of Hopkins Street, facing Franco Cozzo and Centrelink. It’s an unlovely location; a couple of previous businesses here made little impression. The new owners/proprietors are trying very hard to make it otherwise, with a substantial makeover finding the space much brighter and livelier. As for food, well they’re keeping their bases covered there, too. Yes, as the name implies, there’s hot pot and Viet-style BBQ. But for lunch there’s a $15 line-up of pho and hi tieu soup noodles. And there’s a short list of Viet-meets-west steak, chips and salad, mostly also priced at $15. We – CTS, Bennie and our good pal Justin – leave the BBQ option for another time and go instead for the hot pot buffet. This costs $32 per head for dinner, $35 for Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights – and $25 for lunch. We figure, or hope, this will be a tasty bargain. So it proves to be – though we have a few quibbles. The way this works here is new for me. They use a conveyor belt to deliver the hot pot items. Each diner has their own adjustable hot plate, on which is placed their soup of choice. I go for the spicy. It has the same deep and mysterious seasoning I am familiar with from other hot pot joints, but is only mildly spicy. Justin and Bennie enjoy the laksa. We are also provided our own individual

VIET HOT POT AND BBQ Address: 6/68 Hopkins Street, Footscray Phone: 8578 1763 bowls of seafood – a couple of good-sized prawns, a won ton, a scallop and a big chunk of blue swimmer crab. The crab and prawns are pre-cooked, but still good. From there, it’s on to the very many conveyor belt goodies. There’s green veg of various kinds, as well the likes of corn; straight-ahead meat is down to sliced beef and pork; there’s fungus of several varieties; there’s surimi of various shapes and sizes; there’s noodles; there’s more seafood – I find the mussels nicely tender; and the small pipis are good, too. There are many things that appear to be starchy and carby. And there is offal. We think. Because when it comes to many of the offerings we are very much left wondering. We ask for help, but not even the staff member who appears to be the floor manager offers much by way of enlightenment. This is a bit disheartening. But we do eat well and very affordably. And I have more than enough confidence in the adaptability of Vietnamese cooking to be looking forward to trying one of this place’s steak ‘n’ chips meals. SPORT Opener keeps Eagles in the points hunt Yarraville has opening batsmen David Morgan to thank for still being alive in its battle with Hoppers Crossing in Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association north-west 1st XI at Hogans Road Reserve. Morgan carved out 12 fours en route to 90, while the 10 other Eagles batsmen combined for just 63 runs, with five extras rounding out a tough innings of 158 off 59.1 overs. Morgan featured in nine partnerships, the biggest coming with No.10 batsman Josh Torr, who provided 21 in a 42-run partnership. It could turn out to be a vital stand with Yarraville fighting back late on day one. The Eagles snared three quick wickets to have Hoppers Crossing in a spot of bother on 3-20 off 12 overs. Alex Hewet was on fire with the ball late in the day, taking 2-12 off six overs. With Yarraville and Hoppers Crossing only having one win each so far, this Saturday’s play will be hugely important for both sides. Williamstown will face a tough run chase

David Morgan kept Yarraville alive with 90 from the top of the order. (Shawn Smits)

when play resumes against Brunswick at Gillon Oval on Saturday. The Seagulls are 0-6 in reply to the Wicks’ 249. Bryce Preston (3-58) and Patrick O’Malley (3-57) were the pick of the Seagull bowlers. Altona has the upper hand against Coburg after day one at the Coburg City Oval.

The A’s rolled the Burgers for 166, with Mitchell Cullen leading the way with 3-35. A slow start saw the A’s go to stumps on 2-26, requiring a further 141 for victory. In Premier Cricket, Footscray finished the white ball strand of the season with a tie and a loss at the weekend. On Saturday, Footscray split the Twenty20 points with Dandenong in the top of the ladder showdown at Merv Hughes Oval. The Bulldogs finished their 20 overs with 5-139, led by captain Dylan Kight with 45 not out. Dandenong made 8-139 from its 20 overs with Bulldogs paceman Hamish Winter-Irving the biggest hindrance to their chase with 4-17. On Sunday, Footscray travelled to Geelong and was soundly beaten in its final T20 game for the season. The Bulldogs hit 5-116 with Dean Russ leading the way with 26. Geelong cruised past the target with 14 balls to spare. Lance Jenkinson

IN THE DOGHOUSE ■ It

is not every day a Hollywood superstar stops in Werribee for some recreation, but Russell Crowe did just that recently. Under the watchful eye of Commonwealth Games gold medallist Lauryn Mark, the Gladiator star fired a few rounds at the Werribee Victorian Clay Target Club. I’m not sure if it was for a forthcoming movie role or just to pass the time of day, but I think we may be seeing more of Russ in the future as he had a great time and learned a bit from the Marks. I believe he shouted the Hoppers Crossing couple dinner with a few well known friends in the city.

■ Sports

clubs have become much better at recognising the value and contribution of volunteers over the years – unsung heroes are rare these days, thankfully. One who did slip through the cracks until recently was Billy Preston. For the past 23 years, Billy has been cleaning the toilets at the rear of the 11th tee at the Werribee Park Golf Club. Billy bought all the cleaning products and even supplied toilet paper on a weekly basis. He was never asked to do the job – he just did it. Last week, the club acknowledged his great work with a much-deserved honorary membership.

■ Caroline

Springs teenager Tristan Xerri has enjoyed a meteoric rise up the football ladder. The emerging ruckman is a product of Lakeview Secondary College’s elite sports program run by Scott Korczynski, who also coached the youngster in the Caroline Springs seniors. Xerri’s progression has included the Jets, a flag for Caroline Springs in WRFL division 2 and Vic under-18 metro selection. Three games as a 23rd player for Werribee last season in the VFL put him under the gaze of North Melbourne recruiters and his selection in the draft with pick 72 is reward for his talent and hard work.

■ The

(Damjan Janevski)

United in top fun chase By Lance Jenkinson For more than 90 years, Barkly Street Uniting has put an emphasis on the fun side of cricket. The Streeters – whose motto is “The Family Club” – have an open door policy for whoever wants to play cricket in a fun environment. Times are changing and the Streeters, among others, are slowly being left behind. The unthinkable has happened for the Maribyrnong-based club this season. It’s been forced to forfeit second XI matches on more than one occasion due to dwindling numbers in the senior ranks, while the quality of the first XI has suffered as a result of the lack of depth. Streeters administrator Jeffrey Law said the issue was not confined to his club. “I know, from speaking to people … we’re not the only ones, but I’m only worried about one particular club,” he said. “We’ve been really hit hard this year. We’re even struggling with our ones. The quality of

our players in the ones is basically seconds and thirds players playing ones because of the unavailability of people.” Interestingly, the Barkly Street junior numbers are relatively strong. But the Streeters worry about how to convert those juniors into senior members for long-term sustainability. Law believes the appetite for two-day cricket is beginning to dwindle as attention spans shorten and interest in Twenty20 cricket grows. “Two-day cricket is really struggling, it’s a dying game,” he said. “Our junior numbers are OK, but the transition from juniors to seniors these days is not great and a lot of clubs will tell you that. “Cricket Victoria tells us that something like 80 per cent of the kids who do the Milo [junior] program never play cricket again … those stats are ridiculous.” Barkly Street’s first XI plays in Victorian Turf Cricket Association north A1, about four rungs down from the top tier senior division.

The Streeters still have potential recruits demanding pay for play – something that is not always possible at this level. “When you’re playing at our level, it’s more for enjoyment, a bit of fun, but some blokes want money to play,” Law said. All Barkly Street can do is implore any cricketers in Maribyrnong and surrounding areas to contact with the club if they want to play cricket. The Streeters continue to emphasise the club’s strengths, of which there are many. “We just want to get people involved,” Law said. “We’re a good club, we’re a family club, so from that point of view, people will get along well. “We’re multi-cultural, we’ve got multiple nationalities and no one will have any issues mixing within the club.” To join Barkly Street, contact Jeffrey Law on 0411 058 689 or through the club’s Facebook page.

Barkly Street’s Adam McMahon, Matthew Firth, Anthony Koesasi and Jeffrey Law have put the call out for players to the join the club.

Hoppers Crossing Sports Club celebrated its 25th anniversary with the annual awards night last weekend. Members of the original eight-man committee were given lifetime achievement awards. Many of them went out on a financial limb in the early days, some even using their homes as collateral for the club’s finances and some not telling their spouses about that commitment. Fortunately, their vision was rewarded with a successful and solvent club that continues to flourish at Hogans Road.

Big hitting Clubbers give Seddon a cricket lesson Yarraville Club is setting a cracking pace in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association senior division. The Clubbers, defending champions, have opened up a nine-point gap over the rest of the competition just four rounds in. They gave newly promoted Seddon a top-flight lesson in a 146-run first innings drubbing at Hanmer Reserve on Saturday. Yarraville Club had the upper hand after blasting 6-288 off 63 overs. Konrad Kurta maintained the rage on the west’s bowlers with 101 – a game after his double ton against Tullamarine. Clubbers captain Andrew Cullen is in similar form. He made 51 to take his aggregate to 281 at an average of 93.7. After a top order collapse, the Dockers could only muster 142 in 31.2 overs. The Dockers were 5-11 before Tim Moses (26), Raja Sandhu (47), Hayden Dryiski (25) and Mark Webb (20) added some respectability.

Hussain Hanif produced his best spell of the season with 4-16 off eight, while Will Sheridan was busy in the field with three catches. Sheridan (54) and Johnathon Blake (52 not out) were the stand-outs in Yarraville Club’s

second innings, which finished on 3-143. Spotswood is riding high after cruising to a 120-run first innings win over Tullamarine at Leo Dineen Reserve. Ross Horkings was superb for the Woodsmen with a patient 101 not out. In north-west division, Laverton has broken through for its first win, poleaxing Airport West-St Christophers by 106 runs at Etzel Street Reserve. Dallas Treherne had a game to remember with 109 in the Magpies’ 4-246. Airport West-St Christophers was bowled out for 140 with Skand Vohra snaring 4-27 and Edward Bird taking 3-36. Laverton was 6-50 in the second innings at the close of play. Altona North is the only unbeaten team in the division after beating Sunshine United by 73 runs at Selwyn Park. North posted 9-219, led by 80 from Matthew Frydas and a late 46 from captain Haydn Wilkinson. United was bowled out for 146 with Domenic Di Guglielmo (3-21) and Buddhi Samarawickrama (3-30) the executioners.

In north-west A1, Tharanga Indika was the match-winner with 108 not out for Altona Roosters in a hard-fought 19-run win over Westmeadows at Willowbrook Reserve. In west A1, Gellibrand romped to a 106-run win over Williamstown Colts at Greenwich Reserve, thanks largely to 137 from Parambir Singh and 4-37 from Brayden Macdonald. Williamstown Congs had an even team performance in a 67-run victory over Melton Centrals at Blackwood Reserve. In north west B1, Newport-Digman beat West Newport in fine style by 58 runs at Bryan Martyn Oval, Matthew Mason leading the charge with 7-21 and 46 not out. Williamstown Imperials eclipsed Sunshine Heights by 13 runs in a low-scoring game, while Ben Gorton scored 94 not out for Williamstown CYMS in a 178-run thrashing of Maribyrnong Park-St Marys. Import pitcher Riley Barr sends one down for the Newport Rams. (Damian Visentini)

Barr on import duties By Lance Jenkinson Baseball is a two-way street for Newport Rams import Riley Barr. As much as Barr takes from the game, he likes to put back in. Barr knows how good the game has been to him, allowing him to travel from the US, meet new people and learn a few new things. But Barr is just as important to his adopted baseball clubs, of which he has already played and starred in Canada, Germany and two stints in Australia, all before the age of 26. “Travelling gives you a different perspective,” Barr said. “The game is so big in the states, there’s always new stuff coming out, new ways to look at things, new ideas and it’s really great to be able to share that, but it’s also good to pick other people’s minds. “There’s stuff I’ve learned being abroad that I wasn’t being taught in the states as well.” Barr is more than willing to impart his knowledge on the young Newport players. The Denver-born pitcher is also aware of letting the Rams coaches do their jobs.

“Being an import, you’re kind of the new guy and you don’t want to come in and act like your word is bond,” Barr said. “You want to lead by example and once you have that respect established, start coaching up the kids and seeking out the ones that are curious.” Barr has only been at Newport for a short time, but it already feels like its a second home. He has settled in the Altona home of Rams member Paul Walshe, a fine example of a person who gives back to his community. Walshe was named Baseball Victoria volunteer of the year this year and hosting import players is just one of his tasks. While Barr has played for clubs in Toronto, Mainz and Perth, he reckons there is something special about being part of the Rams. “The family aspect of the club is so amazing, it’s a huge community and they’re all just really helpful and eager to make the experience as good as it can be for me and the rest of the guys that play,” he said. On the field, it has been a disappointing season so far for Newport in the Baseball Victoria summer league division 1.

The Rams are just 3-8 and coming off a 4-0 shut out loss to Geelong Baycats on Saturday. Barr remains optimistic. “It’s frustrating, but I’ve played on some really good ball clubs that have started off hot, you peak a little early and in the second half of the season you start dealing with a little bit of adversity and you might have injuries, and the season doesn’t end up as it looked like it might have been,” he said. “The same can be said going the other way, I think it’s good that we’ve been able to deal with as much adversity in all these close games, we’ve never had a game where we’re absolutely defeated, but we’re starting to get our ducks in a row now.” Newport will face Upwey Tigers in Thursday night baseball tomorrow night at the Melbourne Ballpark before turning its attention to Essendon away on Sunday. In women’s division 1, Footscray went down 6-1 to Essendon in a second-versus-third showdown at the Footscray Baseball Club. In men’s division 2, Williamstown Wolves cruised to a 10-0 win over Port Melbourne Mariners to maintain its spot atop the ladder.

A big off season for Jordan Kight has paid off, with the Footscray cricketer selected for the Victoria Metro under-19 team for the National Championships. Kight, who has been playing for the Bulldogs second XI, decided that it was either now or never to take his cricket to the next level. A talented batsman, he knew that there was a lot more that he could show. With that in mind, he set two targets for the 2017-18 cricket season. The first was to make the Victoria Metro team this year. The hard work paid off with the Melton resident named for the championships which starts next week. “I’ve done a few extra little sessions by myself and I’ve worked hard at training,” he said. “I’ve done a bit of extra work and it’s pretty overwhelming. “It’s good to see all the hard work pay off.” It’s the first time the 19-year-old has earned selection in a Victoria under-age representative team. He said he would sit down and set a goal for the national championships. “I want to come out with a decent average,” he said. “I’ll set a goal soon of how many runs I want to make.” Kight is the second member of his family to play for Victoria at the national championships. Older brother Dylan, who is Footscray’s wicketkeeper, also played at under-19 level and Victoria’s future XI team. Jordan got into the sport because of his older brothers. “When I was five I started playing under-12s,” he said. “Both my brothers were playing and they needed fill-ins.” Having achieved one of his pre-season goals, Kight is now focused on achieving his second, a Victoria Premier Cricket first IX debut. Heading into last weekend’s matches, Kight was averaging just over 31 with the bat in the one-dayers and T20s. “I want to play first XI cricket in the two-dayers,” he said. Kight’s Footscray teammate Thomas Ewing has been selected in the Victoria Country side for the same championships. Former Bacchus Marsh star Jack Lalor is also part of the Victoria Country team for the second straight year. Tara Murray

Fogarty thrilled to be off to the Cattery Western Jets draftee Lachlan Fogarty will get to call AFL superstars Patrick Dangerfield, Gary Ablett jnr and Joel Selwood his teammates next season. Suffice to say, the star young midfielder is still pinching himself after landing at the Geelong Cats with pick 22 in the AFL National Draft on Friday night. “To be honest, I still can’t believe it, it hasn’t really sunk in yet,” Fogarty told Star Weekly. “It’s crazy to think I’ll be learning off those guys and playing with them. “Probably the first few weeks, I’ll just be staring at them at training. “It’s not just those guys, it’s the whole team, they’ve been so successful over such a long period of time, so I’m really excited to be a part of that.” Fogarty was considered a draft night steal for Geelong. The Spotswood product was talked up as a mid-to-late first round fancy, but he slipped to the Cats early in the second round. ‘Fogs’, as he is known, could not have enjoyed

a more complete junior career, making every post a winner, be it with the Jets, Vic Metro, NAB AFL Academy or St Kevin’s College. There was still a bit of draft night tension for Fogarty though, when he saw some clubs that were linked to him overlook him in the back end of the first round. “I was getting a bit worried, but with pick 22, Geelong said my name and I’m just really excited for the next chapter,” he said. “I’ve been wanting to do this for so long, it’s been my dream, so I guess it’s just a bonus that I get to stay close to home.” Fogarty said his ability to work in tight confines on a football field might have been strengthened with his basketball background. The 18-year-old was a star player for Altona Gators in the juniors, winning four most valuable player awards, a state championship and representing Vic Metro at the nationals. “I was heavily into my basketball,” Fogarty said. “The basketball has helped my footy in a

number of ways, just the awareness [in the contested ball] and the ability to use both sides of my body has been really helpful.” Fogarty settled on a football career and it’s a good thing too with the talent at his disposal. He comes from a football-loving family, including brothers Michael, who played in Footscray’s VFL premiership, and Matthew, who played in a Spotswood WRFL flag winner. Fogarty is proud to call Spotswood his home club. He is a third generation Woodsman player, as his grandfather Don Smith and dad Terry also played for the club. Fogarty made his name for the Jets as an inside midfielder, but his fastest route to senior football could be in a small forward role. He does, however, envisage a future in the midfield at the top level. “Down the track, I see myself becoming a full-time midfielder, so to get to that I’ll need to improve my endurance and strength as well.” Lance Jenkinson

Perfect home for a Roo fan

Cameron Rayner shows off his new colours in the Harbour City on Saturday. (lions.com.au)

Teen Jet makes history By Lance Jenkinson Cameron Rayner has become the first Western Jets player to be taken No.1 overall in an AFL National Draft. Rayner became hot property after a stellar top-age season with the Jets in the TAC Cup and with Vic Metro at the under-18 national championships, with the Brisbane Lions using their first selection in the draft to secure his services. The Hillside Sharks/Essendon Doutta Stars product was the centre of much speculation in the lead-up to the draft, with cameras capturing his every move on draft day. But when the moment arrived, even Rayner was none the wiser about where he would land until a text message came through from his manager. “My manager sent me a little lion emoji on my phone and that’s when I knew,” he told Star Weekly Weekly. Rayner rose to the top of recruiter wish lists in a remarkable 2017 season, with his play for Vic Metro at the nationals sealing his place at the top of a talented pile of star young players.

The 18-year-old turned heads with his bull-at-a-gate style of play and his ability to rise in the big moments of matches. Rayner has admitted his endurance running needs to improve for him to become a full-time midfielder at the next level, but from the moment his name was called out, he was keen to get into the elite training environment at the Lions and waste no time in his bid to become the best player he can. “I switched straight into game mode,” he said. “I’m just looking forward to getting up there, really excited to start training.” Rayner, a cornerstone of Vic Metro’s run to the under-18 national title, did allow himself the chance to reflect on a successful junior career and enjoy the draft outcome with his family. He particularly enjoyed sharing the moment with his grandparents, who made the trip to Sydney for the draft with the rest of his family. “I think it’s important that we enjoyed the moment that we’ve had and I got to spend it with my family and friends, so I just loved it,” he said. “Everyone was pretty calm, but I think my sister cried a little bit.”

Rayner quickly realised the enormity of his achievement when he spoke to Western Jets coach Torin Baker, who informed him that he was the first Jets player taken with first pick. “It’s huge to think of some of the players that have come out of the Jets,” he said. “That’s just a huge honour as well.” Rayner was already getting to know his Brisbane Lions teammates at the weekend. His phone was buzzing with phone calls and text messages welcoming him to the club. One of three Jets taken in the draft – along with midfielder Lachlan Fogarty, who landed at Geelong with pick 22, and ruck-forward Tristan Xerri, who went to North Melbourne with pick 72 – Rayner is not daunted by being the only Jets player moving interstate. “I had a couple of FaceTime calls and they’re super excited to have me up there and I’m excited to be up there,” Rayner said. “I’m pretty much going on my own, but I’ve got Toby Wooller from the Oakleigh Chargers, who I’m pretty good mates with, we’re going up there. “I’m pretty happy – it’s a fresh start and I’ll try to earn my spot.”

Western Jets ruck-forward Tristan Xerri endured a long wait to hear his name called out on draft night, but the result could not have been any better. Xerri got called out with pick 72 by North Melbourne – the team he grew up supporting. “I’ve followed North all my life, along with dad,” he told Star Weekly. “Just waking up this morning and getting messages last night from Todd [Goldstein], Ben [Brown], Jack Ziebell and Shaun Higgins – it’s surreal, I can’t believe it. “I’m heading down to Arden Street on Monday and I can’t wait to meet all the boys and get stuck into some training.” Xerri bolted into draft contention after an impressive top-age season for the Jets in the TAC Cup. He will be a two-dimensional player for North Melbourne. He can play as a strong marking forward and an athletic ruckman, as demonstrated by his performances for Vic Metro at the under-18 national championships. Xerri was guaranteed a spot on the Werribee Tigers’ list for 2018 if he was not drafted, but it was Werribee that bolstered his prospects when he played three games as a 23rd man for the VFL club this season. “They’ve been great looking after me and giving me the opportunity last year,” he said. “It gave me confidence being able to perform at VFL level and showed the recruiters what I can do. “It’s maybe what got me over the line, so that was great.” Xerri’s already been fast-tracked by the coaching of Torin Baker at the Jets and Scott Korzcynski at Caroline Springs College. He played under Korzcynski for Caroline Springs Lakers in the club’s 2016 WRFL division 2 premiership. “Scott’s been huge for me,” Xerri said. “In year 10, there wasn’t much of me – just a relatively tall kid who couldn’t kick a footy, but had some height. “He stuck with me, taught me the fundamentals and I had a good year in year 10. “He had a connection with the Western Jets, so he spoke to me, spoke to the Jets as well, so he was probably the reason why I ended up getting my first game.” Xerri is the first Caroline Springs player to make it to the AFL.
