Cops bust truckies By Benjamin Millar

It’s your party

Cowboy truck drivers and rogue transport companies are on notice after a blitz found the majority of trucks on inner-west roads pose a safety risk. A recent joint Victoria Police and VicRoads operation focusing on heavy vehicles randomly intercepted 161 trucks at a site in Millers Road, Brooklyn. Of these, 85 per cent failed their inspection – 63 were detected as unroadworthy, two were unregistered and a further 47 infringement notices were issued for load restraint and other offences. Operation Aerodyne identified five companies that will be monitored by Transport Safety Services via further investigations. Westgate highway patrol unit commander Jason Templar said the four-day operation showed too many operators are taking risky decisions that could lead to tragedy. “When we mix heavy vehicles and vulnerable road users, we need to know people are doing the right thing,” he said. “We know they are under pressure to be on the road and delivering with smaller and smaller time frames, but there is still a responsibility to include safety and obey the road rules.” Mr Templar said the operation was spurred by a recent series of fatalities in the inner-west involving trucks. Further blitzes will be rolled out in various locations over coming months. Victorian Transport Association chief executive Peter Anderson said it was “totally unacceptable” for any driver to be operating a heavy vehicle that isn’t 100 per cent safe and roadworthy. “When a driver becomes aware of a potential safety or roadworthy issue with their vehicle, they need to attend to it immediately,” he said. “As an industry group, the VTA encourages every member to make safety its main priority, starting with the roadworthiness of their fleet.” Mr Anderson said the vast majority of operators do the right thing and regularly maintain their vehicles. Maribyrnong Truck Action Group secretary Martin Wurt said the blitz was well overdue given the volume of freight traffic coming through Maribyrnong and Hobsons Bay. “It’s incredibly alarming to think this many unroadworthy trucks are travelling down our residential streets, past schools and past people on bikes,” he said. “We have a bunch of cowboys running through the area and we would like to see a crackdown,” he said.

The banks of the Maribyrnong will be the picturesque backdrop for celebrations to round out 2017 when New Year’s Eve lights up Footscray Park on December 31. NYE Fireworks in Footscray Park is expected to draw thousands of revellers as triple j unearthed 2013 winner Ali Barter, seven-piece reggae and soul outfit Sol Nation and local act Footscray-Three-0Double-1 take to the stage, along with Immaculate Madonna – The Genuine Live Concert Experience, which will pay tribute to the queen of pop. Rusty Berther, of musical comedy duo The Scared Weird Little Guys, will MC the evening, which will kick off at 6.30pm ahead of a firework display at the family-friendly time of 9.30pm. Maribyrnong mayor Cuc Lam said the annual event had quickly captured a large following and become the second biggest New Year’s Eve firework event in Victoria, behind only the CBD celebration. “This year is shaping up to be an unforgettable night, with an impressive line-up of entertainment for the whole family to enjoy,” she said. “Everyone from the City of Maribyrnong and across Melbourne’s west and metro Melbourne is welcome to join in the fun.” Details: www.festivalcity.com.au LEONIE LEE AS IMMACULATE MADONNA

Response times falling “Both Hobsons Bay and Maribyrnong ambulance response times have shown steady improvement.” The average response times from fastest to slowest were Maribyrnong (10.31), Moreland (11.09), Brimbank (11.10), Hobsons Bay (11.19), Moonee Valley (12.01), Hume (12.16), Wyndham (12.29) and Melton (12.48). Ambulance Victoria chief executive Tony Walker said the period covered the peak of one of the worst flu seasons on record and showed the system coped. He said the likelihood of more major incidents and extreme weather events would continue to test the system.

An eight-year-old boy remained in a critical condition in hospital on Tuesday, a day after being found in a car in Newport as temperatures soared. Emergency services were called to Maddox Road just before 3pm on Monday. An MFB spokesman confirmed the boy had been trapped in a black Kia Carnival minivan. Police later said the boy was found unresponsive in the car by one of his parents. Maddox Street residents described frantic scenes as emergency services rushed to rescue the boy. Bill El-Hawli said that he heard sirens and looked out his window to see police cars rushing to the scene. “I turned on the news and heard it was a little boy trapped in a car,” he said. “It’s very sad, very sad.” Temperatures were more than 30 degrees throughout the city when the incident occurred. The boy was taken to the Royal Children’s Hospital in a critical condition. Kidsafe Victoria president Doctor Mark Stokes last year warned that temperatures inside a parked car during the Australian summer could be 20 to 30 degrees hotter than the outside temperature. “On a 29-degree Celsius day, a car can reach 44 degrees in just 10 minutes and a deadly 60 degrees in 20 minutes,” he said.

Tongan victory in the top league Wild scenes erupted in Altona on Monday after Tonga created Rugby League World Cup history with a 28-22 victory over New Zealand on Saturday. Fans took to the Esplanade, tooting horns with red and white flags aloft, among them was Toakase Kalu. “They’ve never won against New Zealand,” she said. “In ’95, they almost beat New Zealand, however, they [New Zealand] won by drop kick. That’s why we’re ecstatic and we’re just going crazy and so overwhelmed.” She said Sunday had been “a church day” so the community decided to celebrate on Monday. The city of Maribyrnong has recorded the quickest ambulance response time out of eight north-western municipalities, latest figures show. Figures for July 1 to September 30 show that 88.3 per cent of ambulances responded within 15 minutes in Maribyrnong, with the average time being 10 minutes and 31 seconds. Ambulance Victoria’s benchmark for life-saving code 1 responses is 85 per cent arriving within 15 minutes. The Maribyrnong average was a 48-second improvement compared to the same period last year.

In Hobsons Bay, 85.5 per cent of ambulances arrived within 15 minutes, with the average being 11 minutes and 19 seconds. This was 52 seconds quicker than the same period last year. Williamstown MP Wade Noonan said under the previous Liberal government in 2014, the average ambulance response times for code 1 emergencies was 12.29 minutes in Hobsons Bay and 11.28 minutes in Maribyrnong. “Labor’s heavy investments in our ambulance service, including employing 450 additional paramedics, are helping to turn around the former Liberal government’s ambulance crisis,” Mr Noonan said.

Lam’s long road to robes (Cathy Jackson)

By Benjamin Millar Maribyrnong has a new mayor following the uncontested election of councillor Cuc Lam to the role. Cr Lam was nominated by outgoing councillor Catherine Cumming at a special council meeting last Wednesday. “It is a great honour and privilege to be elected mayor of Maribyrnong City Council,” she told the meeting. “Thank you to outgoing mayor Catherine Cumming. I just look forward to working with my fellow councillors and making Maribyrnong City Council one of the best councils in Victoria.” Cr Lam arrived in Australia in 1978 as a refugee after fleeing from Vietnam by boat. The experience has spurred her to pursue a life helping people and supporting those in need. Cr Lam first served a stint on the council in the early 2000s and was returned as a councillor at last year’s election. Her elevation to the top civic role ends a five-year Maribyrnong mayoralty drought for the ALP, which once held a stranglehold on the role. The last ALP mayor was John Cumming, after which independents wrested control of the council from the ALP in 2012. His sister, Catherine, became the first of four independents to hold the position during the last council term. ALP councillor Sarah Carter retained her role as deputy mayor without challenge.

Three’s a charm for councillor Veteran councillor Angela Altair has become the first Hobsons Bay councillor elected to the role of mayor three times. The Strand ward councillor, now in her sixth term, said the council would be dealing with some big-ticket items in the coming term, none bigger than recruiting a new chief executive to replace Chris Eddy after May. “The West Gate Tunnel project, the planning decision will be coming in and we need to be on our toes to make sure we … fight hard for the best design for our community,” Cr Altair said. “The big housing development on the former Don site [in Altona North], that will reach a crucial planning stage. “We’ve got to make sure the level crossing removals that are planned for Ferguson Street [North Williamstown] and Laverton are planned and done right – or not at all if the downside outweighs the benefits.” Cherry Lake ward councillor Tony Briffa has been elected deputy mayor. Lofty arguments in units appeal By Goya Dmytryshchak A developer has lost his appeal for the right to build three double-storey dwellings in Altona after pigeons were dragged into the mix. The Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) upheld Hobsons Bay council’s refusal to grant a permit for 180 Blyth Street, which currently has a single-storey brick house. A neighbouring couple had objected to

the proposal, saying future residents would be too close to their pigeons. VCAT senior member Rachel Naylor agreed that the pigeon loft, currently 11 metres from the nearest house, should be taken into consideration. “This proposal will result in units 2 and 3 being a minimum of four metres from the pigeon loft,” she said in her ruling. “Whilst a development on the site is unlikely to be refused

because of the closer proximity of dwellings to the pigeon loft, it is appropriate to consider the potential for impacts given its proximity. “For example, habitable room windows in close proximity to the loft may be undesirable.” Ms Naylor also assessed the neighbours’ complaint that their roof solar panels would be overshadowed, pushing up their electricity bill. She determined there would be “no detrimental shadow impact”.

But she refused to grant a permit for the proposed development on grounds of neighbourhood character and visual bulk. The council’s preferred future neighbourhood character should “maintain and strengthen the well-treed ‘edge of town’ feel”, Ms Naylor said. She said that might mean a single-storey structure at the rear of the site, which might reduce the number of dwellings able to be built on the lot.

Squad plucked out of nowhere It has been dubbed the world’s most dangerous ukulele show. Ukulele Death Squad is embarking on its maiden journey to Victoria. Founding members Julian Ferguson and Benjamin Roberts started as a comedy act for February’s Adelaide Fringe Festival before morphing into a fully fledged band. Ferguson, a classically-trained violinist, said the band had a weird flamenco Mexican vibe, playing everything from film tracks to ’90s techno classics like Derude’s Sandstorm. “We were shocked at the response to it … and then all of a sudden we had all of these festival bookings interstate,” Ferguson said. “Then the next thing you know, we’re off to Edinburgh – which sold out as well.” Ukulele Death Squad plays at Newport Bowls Club on Friday, November 24 from 7.30-10.30pm. Cars for the community Four not-for-profit groups were each given a free Toyota car last week to undertake work that will benefit the Hobsons Bay community for years to come. Toyota Australia gave the cars, which are among the last Camrys made in Altona, to groups supporting homeless youth, senior citizens and people living with a disability. The car recipients were Latitude: Directions for Young People, Laverton Community Integrated Services, Gateway Community Services and LINK Community Transport. Toyota Australia president Dave Buttner said gifting the cars was the company’s way of giving back to the area it had called home since 1995. “The donation of these vehicles … will support these local organisations in providing essential services to some of the most in-need

and vulnerable groups within the community,” he said. The Latitude organisation will use the car to support homeless youth in Melbourne’s west. Laverton Community Integrated Services chief executive Michael Pernar said the car would be used for crisis intervention and for the WynBay L2P program. Gateway Community Services general manager William Kelly said the car would help transport some of the most socially and economically disadvantaged residents of Hobsons Bay, while LINK Community Transport chief executive Rick Lawford said the car would help the aged and disabled maintain their independence and stay in their homes. Festival the reel thing The largest short film festival in Melbourne’s west will return in 2018, taking the plunge into feature length screenings for the first time. The fifth annual Setting Sun Short Film Festival is calling for entries to screen at the Sun Theatre Yarraville next April, offering thousands of dollars of prizes. Last year’s festival received close to 80 short films from Melbourne’s top filmmakers and overseas, selling out all screening sessions. An expanded five-day festival in 2018 will offer awards in categories including animation, short feature, short doco, comedy, acting, direction, screenwriting and more. Festival director Anna Bourozikas said films of up to 12 minutes can be entered for the short film festival, while the event is also

seeking to premiere its first feature length film. “The festival enjoys a lot of support and it is great to see it growing and thriving every year.” Award-winning film producer Sue Maslin will sponsor the female only Rouge program for the third year and will donate $1000 to the best film directed by a female filmmaker. Festival partner Victoria University will sponsor the Best Secondary Student Film Award as well as offering the top 10 secondary school filmmakers a specialist film masterclass. VU rejects union claims Victoria University management is standing firm in its rejection of claims that key union officials are being deliberately sacked ahead of staff bargaining. A recent protest by staff and supporters called for a halt to the forced redundancy of three of VU’s four National Tertiary Education Union representatives as part of a “transformation agenda”. But deputy vice-chancellor Rhonda Hawkins, who is leading the transformation, said there had been no agenda from management to deliberately target union officials. “We have reams of data that help us to look at where the university’s focus should be,” she said. “So absolutely unequivocally, there was no targeting of anyone. Fundamentally though, it doesn’t want massive change – I don’t think VU has expressed any intention to go down the Murdoch path.”

Together, we all achieve By Goya Dmytryshchak A parent with a child with Asperger’s recalling the moment his son scored a basketball goal is among the stories told in a new guide to inclusion in sport. “One of the most amazing moments was when a young kid on the team said to my son, ‘You are going to get a goal this game’,” Adrian recounts. “No one cared about the score, they were all just out there to help him get a goal.” Sports for Everyone: A guide to 360o Inclusion for Young People in Sport has been developed by the Hobsons Bay Community Fund with the University of Melbourne. Six postgraduate social work students from the faculty of medicine, dentistry and health sciences set up a temporary base at the Footscray office of Compton Green Real Estate. Professor Lou Harms said the students worked with Hobsons Bay and Wyndham councils, local parents and representatives from more than 20 clubs to develop the guide aimed at empowering people aged 12 to 18 years. “We discovered that just over half of primary school-aged children are involved in sport and recreation clubs, but in high school and later teen years, this rate falls,” he said. “Some young people face more barriers to participation than others – social, financial and physical – but when these are overcome, everyone benefits.”

One of the researchers, Isabella Orrells said exclusion was usually unintentional based on what was unfamiliar or misunderstood about a person’s abilities, needs and preferences. “Working with the community showed us all that we are defined by more than one identity or ability and therefore our approach to inclusion shouldn’t just focus on one characteristic.”

Fund chairman Hayden Raysmith said the guide was a living document. “It will be constantly updated and we’re inviting sporting groups to add and contribute case studies and examples of ways in which people with disabilities could be included.” The guide was launched at the Fund’s inaugural Awards for Youth Inclusion in Sport and Recreation where seven local clubs and teams were honoured: Williamstown Seagulls, Glen Orden Sports Club, Barnstoneworth United Football Club, Rainbow Club of Point Cook, Williamstown Cannons Basketball Club, BBs Pool Team/ Altona Sports Club and Williamstown Swimming and Lifesaving Club. BBs bring their A game They’ve been credited with bringing humanity to the table. The BBs are one of eight teams in the North Western Pool League. Made up of players with a range of disabilities, it’s the only team in Australia competing in a mainstream league.

a well-worn table before Wednesday night tournaments at Altona Sports Club. Some of the guys joke that playing pool gives them an opportunity to sink a beer. Alsabbagh, who has Down syndrome, is also a talented actor known for roles such as Toby in the ABC TV series Summer Heights High.

Nasser only recently joined. “When I started, I didn’t know how to hit the ball but each week I got better and better,” he said. “I enjoy this team because we have a laugh and play jokes and we’re here to have fun and be social.” Gjomakaj, who plays with one arm and is very competitive, said he also liked to help out in the demanding role of referee. Captain Nick said there was initially resistance from some in the league because “they take their pool very seriously and they felt that it might compromise the seriousness of the competition”. But they agreed to give the BBs a go. “Obviously, 10 years later, it’s been a great success,” Captain Nick said. “A lot of the people I speak to, and I’m witness to it too, have found that the participation of the BBs in the pool league has actually strengthened and increased the importance of the pool league to all the players. “There’s a sense that the BBs bring a certain humanity, if you like, to the league. “It’s been a great benefit to the league generally, not just to the BBs. “Inclusion isn’t just for the BBs and the people who support them – it’s for the community.” Goya Dmytryshchak

Tips for inclusion • Ask if assistance is needed. • Do your best to establish open communication about individual needs. Ensure an equitable and inclusive environment from policies to practices. • Create clear boundaries against discriminatory behaviour. • Establish a buddy system for new members. • Talk about mental health openly and non-judgementally. Seek the help of a professional in supporting club members’ mental health. • Have one entrance that is accessible for all rather than a special entry for people with mobility aids. • Speak clearly and adjust the rate

and volume of speech appropriately to assist with hearing impairment. Ensure signage is clear and concise. • Make sure space is well lit and use colour contrast to assist with vision impairment. • Speak in simple, short sentences to a person with an intellectual impairment/disorder. Break instructions down into simple and direct steps. • Be considerate of other peoples’ cultures and differences. Start culturally-specific programs addressing specific needs. • Be aware not everyone can afford new equipment or clothing. Allow payment to be made in instalments. ALTONA NORTH 12 Rymill Court, 3025 Sweeney Altona & Point Cook: 9398 3777 Just a short stroll to Emmanuel College, this deceptively large four-gabled house offers exciting opportunities. It is on one of the biggest blocks on the street and its neighbour has already been developed into four townhouses, so it is a property with many possibilities. a sunroom-style rumpus room with sliding doors opening out to a fabulous backyard. Update the good-sized fitted bedrooms and the main bathroom, the hardwood kitchen with ample storage and enjoy a great family life where the kids only need to cross the road and walk to one of the best schools in the area. Younger children will enjoy the two cubby houses, easily updated and enjoyed. They are surrounded by mature fruiting trees and plenty of green space.

In fact, the backyard is so generous, extending the house will not be a problem. Even with a significant extension you would still have a great backyard. The second option would be to develop (STCA). The block is about 840 squares, with a wide frontage. It’s in a quiet location in one of Altona North’s most popular pockets and is minutes away from the Altona Gate shopping centre and Bayfit Leisure Centre’s swimming and sporting facilities and has

SPORT Bulldog bats shine in big run chase Footscray has continued on its winning way in Premier Cricket, notching up its fifth straight victory with a well-paced chase against Ringwood on Sunday. Ringwood came into the round as the only unbeaten side, so the game shaped as a tough test for the Dogs. But while they struggled to take wickets, their batsmen stood up to grab the win with seven balls to spare. With Ringwood forced to play its home games at Bayswater Reserve while its ground is being redeveloped, it was a different environment for both sides, but Rams openers, Ian Holland and David King, made themselves at home at the crease. The Ringwood stars threatened to bat the Dogs out of the game with twin centuries, their 210-run stand coming to an end when Hamish

Winter-Irving (1-37) broke through Holland’s defences when he was 106. King was bowled soon after for 102. But while it took the Dogs most of the innings to get the breakthroughs, coach Steve Chapman said he wasn’t unhappy with the final Ringwood score of 2-240. “Those two lads are probably in the top half dozen players in the competition, and we probably kept them to 90 runs off the first 30 overs,” Chapman said. “It makes it hard to strangle them when you don’t get a wicket, but I think they would have liked 15 to 20 more runs, so we were reasonably happy with how we bowled and fielded.” In reply, Footscray’s openers set the tone for the innings with a run a ball 34-run stand before Greg Munro (25) departed. From there, the Dogs were able to maintain the required

run rate throughout the rest of the innings. The top six Dogs batsmen all got starts, but it was Matthew Underwood (37), Dean Russ (56) and skipper Dylan Kight (68) who did the bulk of the damage as the Dogs completed the chase in the penultimate over to finish on 6-241. With strong momentum building at the Kennel, Chapman said it was important to keep level heads ahead of a run of four T20 matches. “I don’t think we would have chased down that a year ago,” he said. “We’ve got some good sides coming up in the T20s, so we’re not looking too far ahead. I think St Kilda this week will have all their Test players in – [Bob] Quiney, [Peter] Handscomb, [Michael] Beer – so we’ll have to be right on our game.” Ewen McRae

IN THE DOGHOUSE ■ The temperatures are finally hitting the 30s just as the footballers head into pre-season training after a very active off season. There are plenty of new faces at all clubs from AFL level down. The Bulldogs have several making the Whitten Oval home for the first time, but I am sure it will be unusual for many others not to have Bobby Murphy and Matty Boyd in the change rooms. Matty has moved into coaching with Collingwood and Bobby is on safari with his family somewhere in Australia. I suspect that when Bobby does return, he will have a full-time role in the media. ■ Betty Smith passed away last week. She was the epitome of red, white and blue. Betty worked tirelessly for the club for many years in the office and in the membership area. Her dedication was inspiring and her work ethic was insatiable. Betty and the late Ingrid McDonald went above and beyond the call of duty on so many occasions it was not funny. The Smith family history is indelibly linked with football in the western suburbs, at West Footscray and the Bulldogs, through Betty and her late husband, Alan. ■ While I am not usually a statistics person, the following figures are very impressive. Yarraville Club Cricket Club’s James Damjanovski, in three VTCA senior division games this season, has bowled 39 overs 20 maidens and taken 13 wickets for 47 runs at an average of 3.62 per wicket. That is awesome. Damjanovski’s teammate, Konrad Kurta, has scored the second double century of the season, joining Seddon’s Ben Speake. Kurta had a fine match against Tullamarine, taking 2-19 to add to his 214.

Dual career boom time By Ewen McRae Monique Conti is proving she’s a very versatile multi-sport star by adding AFLW footballer to her already impressive resume. Conti, a key member of the Melbourne Boomers in the Women’s National Basketball League, was selected by the Western Bulldogs with pick four of last month’s draft and is gearing up for one hell of a juggling act. Conti, 17, said it was a shock to be called out so early on draft day. “It was a very surreal moment,” she said. “I never expected to be drafted to an AFLW club … so to hear my name being called out at No.4 overall was definitely an exciting moment for me and my family. “I can’t explain the feeling … I was nervous all day, but it was just an amazing moment.” After playing in a mixed side at Essendon Doutta Stars, Conti moved to Melbourne University a few years ago to play in a female side before continuing at the club in the VFLW this year.

She played only a handful of VFLW games due to her commitments with the Australian under-19 basketball side at the world championships, but those games were enough for her to catch the eye of the Bulldog recruiters. Finding a balance between basketball and football is tough, she admits, but she feels the sports do complement each other and so will help her improve at both. “The Bulldogs have been very accommodating for me with my basketball, so they understand that side of things,” Conti said. “It is definitely challenging finding the balance, but I have a lot of support around … my parents have always encouraged me to play both sports. “Mum initially didn’t want me to play footy with the boys, so she just said I have to run really fast or I can’t play, so that’s what I did. “I’ve been juggling both for a while, and they both definitely help each other … the fitness and physicality from football really helps in basketball, and the agility on a basketball court translates to the footy field. It all helps.”

76 MARIBYRNONG & HOBSONS BAY STAR WEEKLY \ NOVEMBER 15, 2017

While her Bulldog teammates start pre-season next week, Conti’s current focus is on continuing a good start to the season with the Boomers, who are fourth on the WNBL ladder. “We’ve [Boomers] had a really good start to the season, and we’ve all gelled as a team on and off the court,” she said. “I’m happy with how I’m playing. Missing a week or so of training with year 12 exams was tough, but I’m back into it now so hopefully the form continues. “Once I get the chance, though, I can’t wait to get down and train with the Bulldogs.” Conti is the November nominee for the Don Deeble Rising Star award. The award, hosted by the Sunshine Western Region Sports Club and Star Weekly Weekly, recognises young athletes from the western suburbs who have achieved outstanding results at state and or national levels. Conti will receive $1000, donated by the Yarraville Club Cricket Club. She will also receive other prizes to assist her in achieving her sports goals.

■ Ziggy Kadour has taken on the job as senior coach of Newport Power for the 2018 WRFL season. The former Altona premiership player started his footy at Newport as an Auskicker, so it is fitting he is back coaching the senior side. Ziggy is a smart football person, but it is a tough assignment and there are some unique challenges at Bryan Martin Oval. Jason Cloke has moved from Parkside and will play at Jacana in 2018. I hear another Barry Priest medallist is gone, with Wayde Skipper signing off from Hoppers Crossing. There might be a former AFL big man joining a division 1 club, but it won’t be the Warriors.

Williamstown in command on home turf Williamstown is in a strong position at the mid-point of its Sub District Cricket clash with Taylors Lakes, batting to the brink of stumps to post a big total. After winning the toss and batting on their home deck, the Seagulls overcame two early wickets before a series of important partnerships helped them to 304 at stumps. Williamstown skipper Dale McDonald was pleased with the even contribution for the day, with three players passing 50. “To make 300 in a day, we’re pretty happy with that,” McDonald said. “Everyone’s in pretty good touch at the moment, and we’re sharing the load pretty well, which is nice. The form of the guys up the top has been important to our start of the year.” The day started well for the visitors, with Williamstown opener Brenton Hodges (7)

and first drop Brent McMinn (1) both falling cheaply to Yoshan Kumara. Patrick O’Malley looked solid from the start, and the early part of the day saw Shaun Jennings (31) and Mitchell Streiff (25) batting around him while the Lions’ bowlers managed to dismiss Jennings and Streiff. O’Malley fell just before tea for a well made 50, and at 5-142 at the break the match was evenly poised. Kumara had three wickets at the break, and spinner Jarrod Wakeling chipped in with two of his own, but Williamstown’s deep batting line-up came to the rescue, with McDonald and veteran Craig Sheedy combining to set up a big total. The pair put on 130 runs before McDonald (68) became Wakeling’s third victim, with Sheedy (73) dismissed by Dilan Chandima soon afterwards. The Williamstown tail pushed the target out

beyond 300 before Wakeling was able to wrap up the innings in the penultimate over. With an unbeaten start to the season, McDonald said confidence in the side was high as it looks to grab its fourth win. “With 304 on the board we’ll back our bowling line-up in to defend that,” he said. “They’ve [Taylors Lakes] got a couple of good batsmen, and you’ve only got to give them a sniff and anything can happen, but we made 287 a couple of weeks ago at Williamstown and defended that against a strong Kew batting line-up. “If we can’t defend 300 we are in for a long year.” Ewen McRae Williamstown’s Mitchell Streiff hits out in his innings of 25 on Saturday. Yarraville Footscray fell to a bad loss in Bowls Victoria premier division on Saturday, going down to the previously struggling Deer Park. While Anthony Briggs won his rink 25-17, the home side lost the other three rinks in a 91 (16) - 66 (2) defeat. The loss has Yarraville Footscray with three wins from the opening six rounds. Altona had a thrilling match with Mentone, with one rink tied as Mentone took the win 83 (15) - 80 (3). Nathan Wilson won his rink 21-2, but Brett Foley and Brad Peck both lost by five shots. Dane McKinnon earned a 20-20 tie in his rink. Altona also has three wins for the season.

Cricket

Yarraville Club completed its demolition job on Tullamarine on Saturday, coming away with a powerful 241-run first innings win. After posting 4-339 the previous week on the back of Konrad Kurta’s 214, the Clubbers made short work of the Tullamarine batting order, rolling through it in 54 overs for just 98 runs. While wickets were shared around, James Damjanovski got the pick of the figures with a remarkable 5-9 off 12 overs. Yarraville Club batted a second time, posting 1-106 off 26 overs, with Johnathon Blake unbeaten on 52.

Baseball

Lily Brazel in action against the US in her Hockeyroos debut in Bendigo last week. (Supplied)

New Hockeyroo shines By Ewen McRae Lily Brazel picked up a bronze medal at the weekend, but for Footscray Hockey Club she’s as good as gold. Brazel made her Hockeyroos debut last week in the International Festival of Hockey in Bendigo and Melbourne, becoming just the second Footscray player, and first female, to play senior international hockey for Australia. She was part of the side that demolished the US 5-0 in the bronze medal game on Sunday, but just getting on to the pitch in the Australian uniform was enough for Brazel. “That first game was a lot of fun – very exciting to run out there with the team,” Brazel said. “I couldn’t have asked for a better place to debut. It was awesome to have lots of friends and family there … lots of people from Footscray came along, so it was really special. “That first game, singing the national anthem, I was crying and had all these emotions, but

after that each game just felt like I was getting ready for a club game and I felt settled in the team.” She said being the first female from Footscray to play for Australia was a great feeling, especially after moving from Sydney a few years ago and being welcomed by the club. “It’s a massive honour,” she said. “It’s been overwhelming the support I’ve received from the club – I love the club and they’re so happy for me. It’s a very family-oriented club, which has really helped with me being away from family in Sydney.” While Brazel plays more of a midfield role for Footscray, the Hockeyroos have slotted her into the defender rotations. She acquitted herself well in games against US (2-0 win) , world No.1 Netherlands (0-2 loss), US (3-2 win), Japan (2-3 loss) and Sunday’s medal game. She said a recent training camp in Perth had her well prepared for the challenge, especially for her second international game – against the best in the world from Holland.

“To be honest, I felt like I was really prepared so it wasn’t as much of a shock as I thought it may have been,” she said. “I think heading over to Perth the week before to train set me up really well for the tournament, so I was ready. “I thought we played well in all games, and I was happy with how I went against Holland. We performed quite well against them – the scoreline doesn’t reflect that, maybe, but we were a bit unlucky.” With her first taste of international hockey under her belt, Brazel is turning her focus to a series against Japan in Adelaide this week, before months of training begins ahead of a potential home Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast next year. “The plan is to keep performing over the next few series and then see what happens for next year,” she said. “The Australian squad for 2018 is announced on December 1, so I think if I keep going … show some form and keep improving, I’m a good chance for the Games.”

Newport’s poor start to the Vic Summer League division 1 baseball season continued with defeat at the hands of Fitzroy on Sunday. For Newport, going into the match with just two victories from the first six weeks of the season, this was a must-win encounter to get its season back on track. But in a tight contest it was Fitzroy that came away with a 4-3 win. The loss leaves the Rams rooted to the bottom of the table ahead of games this week against Geelong and Upwey. In division 2, Williamstown remains undefeated after emerging victorious from a shoot-out with Preston. The Wolves were made to work hard for the win, but showed their hitting power once again as they came away with an 11-8 victory. They are a win clear on top of the table. MOTOR BMW 5 Series big on luxury By Ewan Kennedy, Marque Motoring The new BMW 5 Series is a technological tour de force. It’s as sporty as ever, though there’s a slight leaning to the luxurious side as the ‘5 is almost being seen as a smaller version of the super-luxury 7 Series. New drive modes alter steering, suspension, gearshift and throttle settings to suit the driver’s mood. The previous Eco Pro, Comfort and Sport modes on offer are now joined by a new Adaptive Mode. This system uses sensor inputs and navigation data and varies the vehicle’s responses to fit. To permit new owners to come to grips with the intricacies of what’s on offer in their new car, each BMW dealer now employs a BMW Genius to run through the various systems. The stylists have worked hard to present the new 5 Series as a luxury sports sedan, with relatively restrained lines and high quality details. Radiator grilles are very much back in vogue with most car marques these days and the BMW’s latest unit is pretty imposing. BMW’s distinctive ‘Hofmeister’ kink in the C-pillar is obviously part of the package, however the side bead line has been linked for the first time to the kink. The impressibly low 0.24 drag co-efficient of Australian 5 Series models is due to an Active Air System that can close the radiator grilles to alter airflow around the vehicle. As you would expect, the 540i rides on big-diameter, 20-inch, individual light alloy wheels. The top-of-the-range BMW 540i sedan has a new-design 3.0-litre six-cylinder turbo-petrol unit that pumps out 250 kW and 450 Nm. BMW says this allows the sprint from zero to 100 km/h in just 5.1 seconds. The well-selected ratios on the sports version of the eight-speed automatic transmissions play their part. There are also four- and six-cylinder petrol engines and a lower power diesel. As is becoming increasingly common in European cars these days all engines are turbocharged. The iDrive 6 infotainment system makes the new 5 Series the most connected BMW ever. Access is via a 10.25-inch colour touchscreen and the BMW iDrive controller. The latter has been greatly improved and features a touchpad to handwrite commands, and also has console-mounted buttons. Wireless phone charging and wireless connectivity to Apple CarPlay works well and the extended Bluetooth system can connect to two smartphones at the same time. BMW 540i has a 12.3-inch multifunctional screen that adapts to the selected drive mode. Eco Pro, for example, offers blue-lit displays that focus on efficient driving, while Sport

brings in red dials and a focus on revs and speed. Safety systems include standard stability control, dynamic stability control, anti-lock braking with brake assist, cornering brake control and dynamic traction control. Fully autonomous driving is getting closer by the day. In something like the 540i you would like to think that all owners are paying full attention to their driving, but just in case there are plenty of features to save the inattentive. The Driving Assistant Plus package brings

next-generation driving assistance to today’s Bimmers. Four side-mounted radar systems work with the front one to give a continuous picture of what’s going on all around the vehicle. Steering and Lane Control assistant gives the ability to drive hands free for periods up to 30 seconds. The Active Cruise Control, with stop-go function, brakes and accelerates according to traffic flow, a relaxing way to survive major traffic jams. It works right down to zero km/h. There are also front cross-traffic warning,

lane keeping assist, evasion aid and crossroads warning. Parking Assistant Plus offers Active Park Distance Control to the rear, with Surround View and Panorama View providing virtual imaging of the vehicle’s surroundings. About 95kg has been shed over the previous equivalent models by using aluminium in the body and suspension, as well as high-strength steel to maintain rigidity. Engine performance is excellent, but it’s slower than we like for the first few metres during standing starts. The Bimmer really will get around corners at speeds that would have seemed impossible in a family sedan a couple of decades back. BMW’s latest 5 Series is a high-tech luxury-sports sedan that cries out for drivers who want to get the best from it. If that’s how you see yourself then a quick phone call to your favourite BMW dealer makes a lot of sense.
