Sex crimes on the rise By Alesha Capone More than 50 sex offences have been reported on public transport across the west in the past financial year. Victoria Police statistics show there were 51 sexual offences reported on, or near, public transport in Hobsons Bay, Maribyrnong, Wyndham, Brimbank and Melton in the 2016-17 financial year. The number is almost double the 28 sexual offences reported on public transport in the west in the 2015-16 financial year. Of the 51 reported offences, 32 incidents occurred on trains, at train stations and in station carparks. The remaining offences happened on buses, at bus stops, in taxis, on trams and at tram stops, although Maribyrnong is the only municipality in the west which has trams. Three weeks ago, Victoria Police and Crime Stoppers launched a campaign aimed at raising awareness of sexual offences on public transport. In that time, Crime Stoppers released photos of 10 offenders wanted in relation to sexual offences allegedly committed on Melbourne’s train, tram and bus system. Transit safety division Inspector Karl Curran said sexual offences on public transport included people exposing or touching themselves inappropriately, people engaging in sexual acts in front of commuters and unwanted touching. “People should be able to go about their daily business without being touched inappropriately by anybody. It is a crime,” he said. Inspector Curran said police believed the incidences were under-reported, and that authorities urged all victims to report crimes they experienced. “We’ll support them, we listen to what they have to say and we’ll do everything we possibly can to resolve this crime,” he said. He said anyone experiencing, or witnessing, a sexual crime should contact triple-0. If you have been a victim contact triple-0, 1800 RESPECT or 1800respect.org.au. Report information to Crime Stoppers 1800 333 000.

An industrial revelation

(Damjan Janevski)

A cabaret fashion show inspired by Hobsons Bay’s petrochemical industrial complex is expected to wow audiences at Williamstown town hall this month. IF: Industrial Fashion will feature about 15 outfits, including a Qenos-inspired 1920s milk bottle dress by Amy Stokes and Jo Boyd and a defence ship gown by Stephanie England. Other outfits will include the Newport freezer works or “meat” dress by Edie Kurzer and a Take Five tank dress by Alexandra Zvi, inspired by the Mobil Altona refinery. The show opened last year’s Art & Industry Festival and is back by popular demand. Director Donna Jackson said the outfits – which would include firefighter uniforms – told the stories of the local area with humour and style. The ship dress, for instance, was inspired by Ms England’s experiences in Williamstown as a navy cadet in Williamstown. “She can remember learning to sail under the shadow of great hulking defence ships, which were being built a few hundred metres across the water,” Ms Jackson said. “She was impressed about being in a tiny little sailing boat in Williamstown and coming across the strength and dignity of the ships.” The full Art & Industry Festival will return over 10 days in November next year. IF: Industrial Fashion’s three shows from will run November 24, 25 and 26. Tickets cost $30/$20 and people are encouraged to BYO food. Drinks will be available at bar prices. Altona Early Years

Council’s contractors have now removed some of the large and all of the small rocks and the seaweed on the coastal side of the seawall, east of the access ramp at Flemings Pool in Altona. One line of larger boulders has been retained to prevent continued inundation to the seawall during storm events. The rocks directly in front of the access ramp will remain in place as they perform an integral structural support, having been placed there in 2014 to bolster the wall after severe storm damage. Watch this space next month for further updates on our Altona and Seaholme foreshore works and upcoming community information sessions in early 2018.

Works have begun on the new Altona Early Years Hub on the Altona P-9 College site on Grieve Parade in Altona. The hub will be an integrated early years community facility designed to offer a range of children’s and family services, including three and four year old kindergarten and long day care services for up to 187 places, Maternal and Child Health services, playgroups, allied health services and community rooms for hire. Construction is scheduled from October 2017 to October 2018, ahead of opening in early January 2019. Have your say on Digman Reserve Master Plan Following a community consultation process that included an online survey and drop-in session, Council has released the Digman Reserve Draft Master Plan for a public exhibition period of six weeks. Some of the proposed improvements include upgraded sports field surfaces to allow for sporting use in summer and winter, a renewed play space area, a new pavilion and additional car parking, as well as providing an eastwest connection for walkers from Hall Street through to Douglas Parade. Home to local cricket clubs, four ovals, a pavilion and a local playground, Digman Reserve is a 4.2 hectare site that caters to a variety of users throughout the Newport community and beyond. The future use of Digman Reserve, particularly in winter, will help Council meet the growing demand for a variety of sports in the area, and will reduce the pressure at other locations. The community can review and provide feedback to the Digman Reserve Draft Master Plan at participate.

Hatt Reserve The beach shelter at Hatt Reserve is finally complete and ready to be enjoyed by the community. The shelter suffered significant structural damage during the October 2016 storms. The historically significant structure was the last remaining feature of the Williamstown Esplanade when it was first developed 120 years ago. With guidance from heritage planners, Council carefully dismantled and rebuilt the shelter to its original form.

Food for Fines The Food for Fines program is back for the ninth year and will run from Monday 13 November until Sunday 10 December. Hobsons Bay Libraries are taking nonperishable foods instead of cash as payment for overdue charges. During Food for Fines one item of food will be equivalent to $10 worth of overdue fines with no limit

on how much can be paid. Community members who just want to donate food will be welcome to participate too. Food should have an expiry date of 2018 or beyond. Food donations will be accepted at all branches of Hobsons Bay Libraries. Local emergency relief and family support charities will package the donated food into hampers for distribution to local families during the festive season. Free vaccines for teens Council is offering free meningococcal vaccinations for young people aged 15-19 through local community immunisation sessions until 31 December 2017. While most young people will be offered the vaccine through their schools, we are calling on those who have either left school or missed their school’s immunisation day to protect themselves and others by getting vaccinated at any Council immunisation session. Anger as supermarket bans poppy seller why we’re not able to set up inside at this stage because obviously they’ve been great supporters in the past,” Mr Hanson said last week. “We’ve been selling in Coles since I’ve been here – I’ve been here nine years. To my knowledge, it’s always been inside.” IGA supermarket swiftly invited the RSL to sell poppies in its store, where the RSL will now have a stall until November 11. A Coles spokeswoman subsequently issued an apology. “We are pleased to welcome the RSL selling poppies inside our store,” she said. “We have also apologised to the RSL for any disappointment

we may have caused by suggesting the RSL could sell poppies at the front of our store rather than inside our store.” Traders’ president Kim Walsh said it was a victory for common sense and now people could get back to focusing on the meaning of Remembrance Day. “We just hold our RSL and the remembrance of our Diggers very close to our hearts,” he said. “We are like a big country town in the suburbs and Altona people just stick together. “It’s a victory for old-fashioned common sense.” Goya Dmytryshchak

Continuing the Legacy By Goya Dmytryshchak It was while researching a university paper that Laverton’s Kylie Erben learned that, in recent times, more Australian soldiers die by their own hand than in combat. Her research into post traumatic stress disorder, and her own family history, prompted her to volunteer with Legacy. Her paternal Polish grandfather was the only member of his family to survive World War II. “My grandpa lost all four brothers because they were shot by the German army,” Ms Erben said. “They were actually dragged out of a Polish pub and shot behind the pub in the alley way. He was the only survivor and went on to fight with Britain before coming to Australia with my grandmother. He would never talk about his experiences.” Ms Erben, 29, said that as a Legatee, she hoped to raise awareness of PTSD and to provide hands-on practical support. “A lot of our soldiers, they come back mentally strained and a lot of them commit suicide,” she said. “We’re actually losing more soldiers to suicide-related PTSD than we are losing in combat. “My mother’s close friend was also a war veteran from Vietnam and has suffered some side effects from his deployment. “I believe our brave service men and women are stronger than I could ever be, doing what they have had to do, and I feel a strong responsibility to help their families if they are experiencing tough times.” Remembrance Day (November 11), she believes, should be about people remembering how horrific war is and how many lives are lost. “The work that Legacy does is very important because there are a lot of people out there that are sad and suffering, not just from disorders like PTSD but from losing loved ones,” she said. “These are the people that have put their lives on the line for our safety and security.” For more information on Legacy, call 8626 0500. Man injured, robbed in hammer attack A 59-year-old man is recovering at home after being hit on the head with a hammer after leaving work at an Altona North shopping centre on Thursday night. The shop owner was assaulted and robbed next to his car in Beuron Road outside Altona Gate Shopping Centre about 9.30pm. His daughter, Nadia, said her father didn’t see his attackers’ faces. “It was kind of organised because the air had been taken out of one of his tyres earlier on so he couldn’t drive the car, and that’s when the two men approached him and took everything off him,” she said. “And on top of that, they actually attacked him with a hammer. He couldn’t see their faces.” Nadia said a person in the street saw what was happening and approached to help her father. An Ambulance Victoria spokeswoman said paramedics were called to a reported assault and a man with upper body injuries was taken to Footscray Hospital in a stable condition. Nadia said her father was discharged on Friday morning and was “just going through the motions”. “He’s still in a state of shock,” she said. “Luckily, the wound wasn’t deep enough to cause brain damage, but he has a massive gash in his head that will take a couple of weeks to recover from.” She said the men stole her father’s wallet, keys and cash. Anyone with information should call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

An Altona supermarket suffered a community backlash after an RSL poppy seller was banned from inside the Pier Street store. Many, including the Altona Village Traders Association, were outraged that Coles’ decision left volunteer Peter Waters, who uses a wheelchair, only able to sell poppies out in the street. Developer backs childcare plans By Benjamin Millar The developer of a childcare centre planned for one of Melbourne’s most truck-plagued intersections is confident the project will proceed even though some conditions remain unmet. Star Weekly last year revealed the state’s planning tribunal had approved plans for a 170-place childcare centre on the site of a petrol station at the corner of Williamstown Road and Francis Street in Yarraville. Maribyrnong council had rejected plans for a 206-place centre on the site, submitted

by prominent property developer Dean Giannarelli’s company Southern Capital Corporation. Mr Giannarelli successfully appealed the decision to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) with amended plans for a two-storey childcare centre with roof terrace playground. Almost 12 months after the decision, some conditions for the project remain outstanding. VCAT member Michael Nelthorpe ruled that traffic impacts on adjacent Dean Street could be overcome if parking was prohibited on the street during peak hours. He included

a condition that before development commenced, on-street parking on both sides of Dean Street must be prohibited. Maribyrnong planning services director Nigel Higgins said the condition required the applicant to contact the council to find a solution and initiate the proceedings. “Council has not received a request from the developer to address this condition and no development can commence until this condition is met,” he said. Mr Higgins said the applicant was also yet to submit amended plans, as required by VCAT’s other condition.

Demolition and clean-up works carried out in recent weeks are allowed, but no further works are permitted until the amended plans meet the satisfaction of Maribyrnong council. Mr Giannarelli said he still expected to have a centre open by January, 2019. “We are in the final throes of negotiations with operators,” he said. “Whatever we need to do we will do. We are looking forward to opening a brilliant facility.” The permit will expire if conditions are not met and works do not commence by November next year.

Murder classic revisited The Hobsons Bay Refugee Network has set in train its final film fundraiser for the year. On Friday, the group will screen a remake of the classic film Murder On The Orient Express, directed by and starring Sir Kenneth Branagh. Set in the 1930s, the film features an all-star cast including Judi Dench, Michelle Pfeiffer, Derek Jacobi, Penelope Cruz and Johnny Depp. When a train is stranded after an avalanche and a passenger is murdered, everyone becomes a suspect. HBRN supports refugees in the west, providing support in finding accommodation, emergency food deliveries, families needing access to services and educational support for students in primary and high school. It recently made a donation to lawyers acting on behalf of the asylum seekers facing the closure of their detention centre on Manus Island.

Half of all proceeds from this fundraiser will go to West Welcome Wagon to help it continue its community work. The screening will be held at The Sun Theatre, Ballarat Street, Yarraville, on Friday, November 10 with a 6.15pm arrival for 6.45pm screening. Audience members are invited to dress in period costume to enhance the mood of the evening. Tickets: $25 via www.trybooking. com/323738 Benjamin Millar

Maribyrnong residents need never again wake up in a panic after forgetting to put out their bins, thanks to a new smart phone app. The council has launched an app that will let residents keep track of their bin collection via alerts and a calendar, as well as looking up different items to find out whether or not they are recyclable and how they can be disposed. The Maribyrnong Bins and Recycling App helps residents report illegally dumped material and features additional information on composting, hard waste collections and details on the Sustainable Living Maribyrnong program. The council hopes the app will help address some of the misinformation regarding waste and recycling, as part of its aim to increase

waste diversion away from landfill and cut recycling contamination by half. Maribyrnong mayor Catherine Cumming said the council is excited about the launch of the app which puts waste and recycling information at the fingertips of residents. “This free digital tool will enable Maribyrnong residents to stay up-to-date with bin collection days and learn what can and cannot be recycled in kerbside bins,” she said. The Maribyrnong Bins and Recycling App is available for free in the Apple App Store and on Google Play. The first 100 residents to download the app will receive a free keep cup and eco bag. VU sackings spark protest By Benjamin Millar Vocal protesters have called on Victoria University’s governing board to reverse the sacking of three staff who believe they were targeted for being union representatives. Victoria University management last month rejected accusations it is deliberately sacking union branch officers in a bid to cripple the voice of staff ahead of new negotiations, a matter that has also been raised in state Parliament.

National Tertiary Education Union branch president Paul Adams, vice president Stuart Martin and secretary David Garland were all sacked. A rowdy protest on Thursday outside a VU University council meeting called on the council to step in and reverse the sackings. Dr Adams told the protest that union members and students will not be bullied. “What they need to realise upstairs is that they can sack us, they can outlaw us, but we help each other,” he said.

Greens Senator Janet Rice told the protest that VU has a proud history of providing education to everyone regardless of their background, but it has shifted away from its mission. She said the university could have stood with the National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU), staff and students and said to the federal government “enough is enough” and demanded no more funding cuts. “But instead they have kowtowed to the government, have rolled over and asked the government to tickle their tummy,” she said.

NTEU national president Jeannie Rea said VU management has taken “an unprecedented antagonistic attitude” towards the union. The protest comes after western suburbs Greens MP Colleen Hartland asked Training and Skills Minister Gayle Tierney what she believes the state government can do to “stop VU’s union-busting tactics”. Ms Tierney said Ms Hartland had raised “very serious allegations” but her department was making inquiries of Victoria University management to better understand the issues.

The bad blood of mates “When we look back on it, we were always both mates,” Michael said. “When I lost the world title, when I got to Melbourne, one of the first people to ring me up was Lester … we had a meeting and let bygones be bygones. “Because they made mountains out of molehills. But no worries, there was deadset bad blood by the time we got in the ring – well and truly.” In the movie, Ellis’s role is expected to be played by his son, Lester jr, who is pursuing an acting career. Michael said he was in discussions about who would play him. “It would have to be someone short, that’s for sure,” he said. “Someone suggested Gyton Grantley. He worked with Lester jr on Underbelly – he played Carl Williams.” Goya Dmytryshchak

Thirty-two years after one of the classic fights in boxing history, a movie deal is in the pipeline for western suburbs boxing world champions Barry “Boy” Michael and Lester “Master Blaster” Ellis. Michael, from Williamtown, had reached the pinnacle by beating Ellis for the IBF super-featherweight world title in 1985. But Ellis’s “underworld management” was “filthy on me”, Michael said. He said he was with his first wife at Lazar’s when Ellis’s promoter, Alphonse Gangitano, nearly bit his face off, putting him in hospital. Ellis, from Taylors Hill, said that while he had gangster backing, Michael had support “from the wharves”. “I think we were the last Australians, and the second-last in history, who fought a 15-round fight,” Ellis said. Michael said he was indebted to Ellis for the rest of his life for the opportunity to fight him.

Grocer goes family friendly A

new market-style grocer will open November 9 at The Circle in Altona North, focusing on supporting working families by opening late most nights of the week. Fiesta Market by the Circle is the brainchild of business owners Ameer and Abeer Poteres. They say they know how much locals in the area value fresh produce and the farm-to-plate food philosophy. “Eating fresh and buying food from operators you trust is hard when you are time-poor, as young families almost always are,” Ameer says. “With that in mind, we are buying fresh fruit and vegetables from the market every morning, as well as stocking a full continental delicatessen, a bread line and general groceries. “We’ll also stock pastas, preserves and sauce.” Ameer and Abeer saw an opportunity for a smaller operator to open in the area and look forward to helping locals eat fresh, and eat well – even if they are shopping late at night on their way home from work. “As well as the longer operating hours – until 9pm on Thursdays and Fridays – we encourage our customers to tell us directly any other specific products or brands they would like us to stock, as

Owners Abeer and Ameer Poteres. (Damjan Janevski) without the customers, we are nothing and we really want to become part of the community,” he says.

We can make changes to suit our customers overnight, unlike multi-nationals, that can often take a while to enact change.

“Please come down and say hello this Thursday, November 9. “We are going to trial the hours and see how the late nights go, and if locals want us to be open late on more days, we will be.

“We are really focused on working families who want market fresh and deli-style shopping that is of a great quality, and a competitive price, accessible at a time of the day that suits working mums and dads.

“This is the advantage of being a small business.

“Fiesta Market, by the Circle, would like to thank

agents, growers and suppliers for their support to help us provide the best quality, variety and lowest prices to our customers.” Fiesta Market by the Circle, 45-49 The Circle, Altona North. Seaplane, suburbs and skylines By Goya Dmytryshchak What do Melbourne’s western suburbs look like from a bird’s eye view? Star Weekly decided to find out by flying from Williamstown to Point Cook with Melbourne Seaplanes, established in Williamstown in 1997. The Way out West trip takes in Williamstown and Altona beaches, Jawbone Marine Sanctuary, Cheetham Wetlands, Sanctuary Lakes and Point Cook Marine Sanctuary. Cruising at 500 feet above water and more than 1000 feet over built-up areas, chief pilot Rod Gunther then flies over Wyndham and across Port Phillip Bay to St Kilda. We fly over Webb Dock and the cruise ship Celebrity Solstice which docked at Port Melbourne on Wednesday. Distance is no object when travelling at more than 200km/h, although the plane is so smooth it’s like sitting on a cloud. The seaplane passes over the West Gate Bridge where the cars look like matchboxes, and past the mouth of the Yarra River and Newport Power Station before landing among sailboats and yachts in Williamstown. Melbourne Seaplanes has been taken over by Brett and Barbara Audas. Mr Audas previously flew the Emirates A380, which is the largest commercial aircraft in the world. Ms Audas said there had been renewed interest in seaplanes since The Bachelorette Sophie Monk and winner Stu Laundy took a seaplane to their romantic date. “I’ve got a gentleman booked in and he’s going up over the Melbourne city skyline and he’s proposing to his girlfriend,” Ms Audas said. Details visit www.melbourneseaplanes.com. au or call 9397 5388.

West side stories retold By Goya Dmytryshchak If there’s one thing that unites people, it’s having grown up in Melbourne’s working-class western suburbs in the post-war migration and industrial boom years. It’s this fierce ownership of place that inspired How the West was One: Memoirs of Melbourne’s Western Suburbs – a compilation from 39 contributors to be launched on November 12. Childhood friends Karyn Howie and Sue O’Brien collected the stories from the likes of comedian Rob Sitch, cartoonist Michael Leunig, actor Kevin Harrington, Sun Theatre owner Michael Smith, Western Bulldogs’ author Kerrie Soraghan, musicians Mark Ferrie, Wendy Stapleton and Pat Wilson, and journalists Josephine Cafagna, Lina Caneva and Tony Leonard. The book tells of the tough life of migrants, local characters and the physical labor in the abattoirs, factories, kitchens and transport hubs. Howie and O’Brien state in the book that when someone who grew up in the western suburbs in the 1950s, ’60s or ’70s meets another person from the same background, there’s always a shared excitement. “It’s about the bursting pride that every westie felt when the Bulldogs won the 2016 AFL premiership,” they write. “It’s about giving something a red hot go, working hard, looking after each other, having a good laugh but never ever getting too full of yourself.” Harrington, who states in the book that it was a privilege to grow up in Footscray, recounts telling his late mum he was working with Sitch. “You be nice to the Sitch boy,” his mum had said. “Why,” he had asked. “Because he’s important?”

Above: Cartoonist Michael Leunig. (Michael Rayner) Top right: Kevin Harrington. (Eamon Gallagher/The Age) Above right: Rob Sitch. (Meredith O’Shea)

“No,” she had replied. “Because he’s local.” “People from the west may not have much but what they have, they share,” Harrington writes. “When a local has some success, we all celebrate their victory. And if one of our neighbours falls down, they will be picked up and comforted.” Leunig, who also grew up in Footscray, writes about his struggles at school but with a reminder that there are different types of

wisdom. “Our days were filled with the music of chattering machine guns, used for testing the bullets and, across the road, the largest rubbish tip in the western suburbs billowed flames, toxic smoke and giant rodents into the world, giving a spiritual, apocalyptic atmosphere to our otherwise plain little education humpy perched there beside two abandoned quarries and a working one at the rear that never

stopped exploding and sending great lumps of basalt shrapnel into orbit over the bleak windswept fields of despairing Scotch thistles around us,” he writes. All profits from the book will go to Western Chances, which supports young people in Melbourne’s west to achieve their potential. The book will be available to purchase online from November 13 at howthewestwasone.com. au

Brooklyn dogs to have their park By Goya Dmytryshchak

Footscray’s art with a heart

People are being invited to have their say on where Brooklyn’s first off-leash dog park should be located. Hobsons Bay council has proposed two options for a park within Brooklyn Reserve – the corner of Cypress and Nolan avenues or the corner of Cypress and Heather avenues. Mayor Sandra Wilson said the need for a dog park in the northern end of Hobsons Bay had come through loud and clear.

‘‘

The west is gearing up for a night to remember when the galleries, venues and spaces in-between play host to One Night in Footscray. The free event will feature an eclectic array of entertainment including roving performers, live music and DJs along with kids’ activities, gallery exhibitions, an artist market and participatory art installations. The night-long celebration on Friday, November 24 is a Footscray University Town initiative, a partnership between Victoria University (VU) and Maribyrnong council. VU’s Footscray University Town creative producer Bec Carey-Grieve said the event celebrates local talent and offers a chance to explore and discover Footscray. “We hope this event will encourage journeys through central Footscray and its creative spaces,” she said. Maribyrnong mayor Catherine Cumming said the west in general, and Footscray in particular, are home to a strong and increasingly creative community. The action will unfold from 5pm, taking over venues including the Phoenix Youth Hub, Mr West, Nicholson Street Mall, Five Walls gallery, Littlefoot and VU at MetroWest. Full program: www.onenightinfootscray. com

We have plans to meet those expectations

’’

“We have plans to meet those expectations by June, 2018,” Cr Wilson said. “Now we want to hear from our community as to whether the dog area should be in the south-east or south-west corner of Brooklyn Reserve.” The dog park is being established under the Brooklyn Neighbourhood Project, which has brought the community together through initiatives such as a pop-up dog park. Resident Richard Spiteri said he would like the new dog park to be next to the new $400,000 children’s playground in Nolan Avenue. “I just think they’ve done all of the new work with the children’s playground, so for a family that has children and a pet … to me it makes more sense that a parent may want to take the kids out for a walk and a play and let the dog run off trail as well,” he said. “I think it’s a bigger space as well for dogs to run around.” Have your say by December 1 by visiting participate.hobsonsbay.vic.gov.au

MY PLACE The Footscray melting pot offers a welcoming and engaging home for artist and emerging cultural leader Roberta Joy Rich. She speaks with Benjamin Millar. What is your connection with Footscray?

Living in Footscray has influenced my desire to engage further within my community in my arts practice and with Afro peers. Participating in the Emerging Cultural Leaders program has been a part of this, and I hope to collaborate with Footscray Community Arts Centre in future projects, as I see FCAC as a centre in Melbourne for diverse cultural and intersectional practices.

I have lived in Footscray now for about seven years. I grew up in Victoria’s south-west region, on Wathaurong land on the Bellarine Peninsula, and moved to Melbourne for university. I needed a change from the east once I finished my undergraduate studies. Considering this, I guess I’ve always been west-side oriented. I feel at home in Footscray and can’t imagine living anywhere else right now.

What drew you to FCAC’s Emerging Cultural Leaders program and what has it meant to take part?

What do you love most about the area?

I have an ambitious project in mind of a creative exchange program between South African and African diaspora artists in Australia. This mentorship program came at precisely the right time for me to further understand the work and logistics involved of my goal in a challenging and unpredictable industry. I feel privileged to have participated in a program that has introduced me to amazing creatives and producers, while absorbing so much valuable knowledge.

Do you have a favourite local place or places to spend time? That’s hard to answer, there are so many places I enjoy! I love eating at Dong Ba, Pho Tam, To’s, FAB Café, Bò De Trái, Dinknesh (Lucy), Ras Dashen, Footscray Best Kebab House and Africa Town. Shout out also to my cousin’s joint, Up in Smoke – it’s good too. I loved visiting Little Saigon Market and was very sad to see its burnt fate. How did you get into art and what can you tell us about your practice?

(Damjan Janevski)

The west has always been a home for many diaspora. I feel relaxed and extremely comfortable in Footscray. I would not change anything – except for rental increase! However, the area has been changing very quickly, especially over the last few years. I love that Footscray is a melting pot. I hope it stays this way and the local entrepreneurs thrive in the area.

I’ve always been engaged with art and have been creative from a young age. My arts practice is multi-disciplinary, working with a variety of mediums such as video, installation, textiles and screenprinting. My work explores identity and how identity is constructed and

What’s something people might be surprised to learn about you?

represented. In particular I draw from my diaspora African identity and my experiences in Australian and South African contexts. In what ways has living here influenced your creative voice and output?

Also known as DJ BOB in certain circles. Former athlete. Lonely Hearts Choir member. Zelda: Ocarina of Time fan. The 2017 Emerging Cultural Leaders showcase and celebration will be held at Footscray Community Arts Centre from 6.30-8.30pm on Thursday, November 9. Details: footscrayarts. com

TRACK SNACKS Supermarkets and charcoal chicken shops tend to do a booming trade in cooked chooks at this time of year. They’re great cut into portions for a chicken-and-champagne Spring Carnival get-together or shredded up for chicken sangers. But if you’re after a totally different take on chicken-themed “track snacks” as we near the end of the Melbourne Cup week festivities, these Thai chicken balls are worth a try. They’re simple and tasty, with no pan frying required. Who said mini-muffin pans were only for mini-muffins? Thanks to Best Recipes for this easy entertainer.

With a facade that speaks of another age, updated for commercial purposes, this property has all of the foundations of a great family residence with the hard renovations already carried out. Located close to schools, Victoria University and shops and around the corner from Seddon and Yarraville, this property is the definition of Edwardian charm meeting opportunity, all in the heart of Footscray’s business precinct. Inside, the front sitting room has a deep bay window feature with original glass that adds instant appeal. The hall has typical timber flourishes and the larger skirting boards and architraves that typify the era. Three large bedrooms are carpeted and all have sash windows and high ceilings. The lounge room has a fireplace. Laneway access opens up the opportunity for a rear garage.

Open your motorised front gate when you arrive at 61 Home Road and relax – there’s nothing left to do. Surrounded by the period-rich properties that make up this pocket of Newport, the location has an old-school community vibe. The house’s contemporary facade tips its hat to that heritage, so blends seamlessly with the streetscape. With a kindergarten a block away and a park at the end of the street, this neighbourhood is also serviced by Hall Street shops and Newport train station. This new build has been designed to

tick every box for families. There are four bedrooms, three bathrooms, two living rooms, a two-car garage and ample outdoor space. With open-style living downstairs, the feel is contemporary and bright. Hardwood American oak floorboards will last a lifetime. High ceilings with downlights feel timeless, too, and accentuate the sense of space. The kitchen is all white high gloss and 2pac, with a composite stone waterfall breakfast bench and loads of storage. The kitchen overlooks the dining area,

with the lounge room beyond. There’s loads of room for the whole family to relax in front of the gas fireplace after dinner. Ducted vacuum, ducted heating and cooling, video intercom, perimeter alarm are inclusions that add appeal and value. Upstairs find three fitted bedrooms – two with walk-in robes, the main with an en suite. Another bathroom is up here, too. The bathrooms all have a designer feel, with ceramic tiling and over-sized frameless showers. There is a curved, free-standing plunge bath in the main bathroom. Outdoor entertaining is taken care of

thanks to a decked undercover area and a lawn area for the kids to play or for relaxing with friends in the sun. The property has easy access to many of the attractions offered by the inner west, including beaches, walking and biking tracks and eateries, while the West Gate Bridge to the city is just a few minutes drive away. There’s a a great fourth bedroom at the front of the house that’s ready to go if visitors are invited to stay. Samantha Freestone

SPORT Hitters set the tone as Wolves win easily Williamstown continued its winning ways in Vic Summer League baseball at the weekend, smashing Mulgrave to remain unbeaten. With the two sides sitting at opposite ends of the division 2 ladder, Williamstown was always expected to take the win, but it did it in style as almost every member of the roster got a hit in the 13-0 rout. Wolves pitcher Daniel Chircop said the hitting on the day was something to behold. “Our hitting was incredible to be honest,” he said. “I think we got 14 hits, and eight of our nine guys got a hit, so that’s a solid day out. It was good to come out of the bye week strong, and with Preston and Springvale in the next two weeks it’s nice to get some form.” Chircop led the day off on the mound for Williamstown, pitching six scoreless innings

before handing over to relief pitcher Ryan Camov to close out the game. The batters made two runs in the first and only posted one scoreless inning as the runs flowed steadily. Chircop said despite the lopsided result it was pleasing to see his side remain focused and get something out of the game. “I think a good line-up takes something away from a game like that,” he said. “What I really liked was even though the opposition wasn’t necessarily pushing us, we remained focused and kept working on different parts of our game. “We didn’t have to use our American import, so Ryan (Camov) got to close it out … he will be a valuable part of our bullpen going forward. Jacob Stirrat got to catch at the end, so that gives us some options.”

With matches against stronger opposition to come, Chircop said the hitting display on Sunday gave him confidence they could produce some good results. “As a pitcher, it gives me great confidence when I walk onto the mound to know that we have scoring potential in the team and the ability to put good runs on the board.” Elsewhere, Newport had one shocking innings against Cheltenham which cost it a vital win. Cheltenham scored five runs in the fifth inning on its way to a 6-1 win, with Newport scoring its solitary run in the fifth also. The loss was Newport’s fourth from the opening six games. Ewen McRae

IN THE DOGHOUSE ■ By the time you read this another Melbourne Cup will have been run and won and Werribee will have played its part once again. We should be pleased with our contribution, as the international flavour of the cup continues to grow, Werribee becomes more and more synonymous as the home of the international horses. However, I think we fail to capitailse on that exposure as a city. We need to let travellers to Melbourne know we are the home of the International Horse Centre, it is a good thing and well worth promoting and marketing. It is certainly worth spending money on when you compare it to an art exhibition about the Werribee tip. ■ Barry Priest medallist Steve Kennedy’s return to Ballarat Football League club Darley for the 2018 football season is a blow to the WRFL and in particular Altona, but the Vikings need more than him to top the competition next year. The annual exodus of players for overseas holidays always seems to derail the club from higher honours. Altona senior coach Saade Ghazi has said that won’t be happening in 2018, and from all reports an edict has been laid down to players. The clearance window is open during November and there has been some action already especially by the league’s newest senior club Point Cook. Parkside also looks to have beefed up its list now it is in division 2. The signing of Max Rampling and Keelan Privitera will be important, especially if Jason Cloke does move on as expected.

New coach aims for finals By Ewen McRae Williamstown’s first foray into women’s football now has a new leader, with Amy Catterall announced as the inaugural coach of the new VFLW side. Williamstown will enter a side in the expanded women’s state league in 2018, marking the club’s first female side in the 153 year history of the club. The prospect of crafting a side and a culture from the very beginning was one of Catterall’s primary attractions to the position. “I love the fact that I get to go into a brand new team and help create really good foundations for club culture,” Catterall said. “Setting the foundations for a big support network to carry on into the future was also very exciting. “This is right near the top of my achievements, because it allows me to help other people develop and become better footballers and hopefully better people through the support the club can provide.”

Catterall has an impressive CV in the game, including premierships as a player at St Albans and Deer Park, state representative from 2007-12, and playing for Melbourne in the inaugural AFL Women’s match in 2013. In recent seasons she has focused on coaching, with positions as a youth girls coach at St Albans (2009-12), development coach at Deer Park (2016), and an assistant coach at St Kilda Sharks in the VFLW (2017). Tryouts for the Seagulls 2018 side will begin in the coming weeks, with more than 150 players already putting their hands up to try out for a spot on the Williamstown list. “It’s great to have so many interested in playing for us,” Catterall said. “It makes my job tough, but it’s also really exciting to see that there are so many players wanting to be involved with the club. “I’ve also spoken to VFL players who I think will bring great leadership skills and diversity to the club and the team.” Catterall said her side would provide

an opportunity to develop and create opportunities to be drafted to the AFLW next year and beyond. “I already have a group of girls in mind for the side that I believe should be playing AFLW already, so we want to get players ready for that next step,” she said. “I’m hoping that we can be a pathway for girls to get to the top. Having a standalone club without affiliations to AFL club’s can be a benefit for our players. “For example if you are at Collingwood’s VFLW side, Collingwood are going to be very protective of those players, but with us you can talk to any AFLW club and open up your options for drafting.” As with any new side, the expectations in the first year are going to be manageable, but Catterall said there is no reason they can’t shake up the league in 2018. “We want to be realistic, but obviously we’d love to make it to the finals and I think that’s a good aim at the start.”

■ I wanted to pass on my condolences to the Wolany family on the recent passing of Rick. His generosity and support for local sports teams will not be forgotten, nor will his larger-than-life persona. RIP.

■ Werribee Cricket club welcomed Shaun Dean back from his honeymoon but he could not get the side home against Williamstown last Saturday. The Tigers came up short chasing 142 and no doubt will be looking for opening bowler Jono Burton to get back from injury to get their season going after three losses. Hoppers Crossing was bundled out cheaply against Ivanhoe. Werribee is hosting the fourth Movember T20 charity game at Soldier’s Reserve on Sunday, November 26 against Hoppers Crossing. The day includes an under-21 game and the Mo game plus a barbecue and fundraising activities.

Altona takes its chances to move up the ladder Altona has jumped up to second on the Premier Bowls ladder following its comprehensive win over Lilydale on Saturday. With Melbourne slipping to its first loss of the season, Altona took the chance to creep up the table with a solid 95 (18) - 56 (0) victory at Lilydale. While it took out all four rinks, it was far from easy going for the visitors as the home side pushed them all the way in three of the rinks. Brett Foley scored a huge 34-5 shot win in

his rink, but Dane McKinnon (20-15), Bradley Peck (19-17) and Nathan Wilson (22-19) were pushed all the way. Wilson, Peck and Foley now hold three of the top four positions on the league skip ladder early in the year. The win lifted Altona to 3-2 after five games, trailing just Mentone on the table. In pennant division one, Altona endured an agonising one-shot loss to Werribee as it went down 73 (16) – 72 (2) on home greens. While the loss leaves Altona’s seconds with just one win for the season, it has a score

difference of just -12 after five rounds to show how close it has been in many games to date. Elsewhere, Yarraville Footscray’s Premier Division side came away from its trip to Essendon with a strong victory to grab its third win of the year. The 87 (16) – 60 (2) win was built on the back of Christopher Ball’s big 15-shot win in his rink, while Raymond Coulter and James Pearce also scored comfortable victories. Wayne Roberts toiled hard but eventually slipped to a six shot defeat.

The win for Yarraville Footscray lifts it into the top four ahead of this week’s clash with ninth-placed Deer Park. In pennant division two, Yarraville Footscray managed one rink win in a close six-shot loss to Altona Sports. The 70 (2) – 76 (16) defeat puts Yarraville Footscray in sixth place on the table, with a trip to winless Melton to come this weekend. Ewen McRae

Bulldogs off to a flyer By Ewen McRae A coming of age knock from Matthew Underwood and a disciplined team bowling performance delivered Footscray its fourth win of the Premier Cricket season at the weekend, comfortably accounting for Camberwell. Underwood negotiated a damp wicket early in the day before flourishing late to score 81 off 115 balls as the Dogs posted 5-238, before rolling last season’s minor premiers for just 134. Footscray coach Steve Chapman said Underwood’s knock was one of his best. “He’s in a different class now, he’s turned himself into a fine young batsman,” Chapman said. “He’s always had the talent, but his shot selection is much better now, and the number of shots he has available has grown. “I think he’s just turned 20 and has probably 40 Premier First XI games under his belt so he’s got a good base to grow from.

“He’s in the Victorian Futures League squad so he is getting noticed at a higher level.” After losing Hayden Butterworth for just two early in their innings, the Dogs consolidated well and built healthy partnerships through the rest of the innings. Greg Munro posted 40 before he was stumped, and Dean Russ (51 off 66 balls) upped the scoring rate when he joined Underwood. With the ball it was a solid team performance, with the top order of the Magpies struggling to capitalise on starts. Camberwell number 11 Will Walker was the top scorer with a late 23, but by then the game had passed the visitors by. Wickets were evenly spread, with Timothy Buszard (3-38), Hamish Winter-Irving (2-26), Lucas Dredge (2-27) and Jack Sheppard (2-18) all playing their part. “We thought 230-odd was a good score on that deck, and when we kept it tight early with

the ball it forced Camberwell to come at us,” Chapman said. “We’re at our best when that happens and oppositions have to force the pace, so that played into our hands a bit.” Footscray will now travel to play unbeaten ladder leaders Ringwood this Sunday, with Chapman excited about the possibilities and challenges ahead. “I said to the lads after the game that we’ve almost got a free swing at Ringwood this week,” he said. “You look at the teams that you think will be in the eight, and we’ve already got a few wins against those teams so we can go to Ringwood with a bit of momentum and really go hard at them. “We’re a good team in our own right, and we gave them [Ringwood] a good shake last year so we go over there with some confidence and belief this week.”

The Western Region Football League has announced its competition structure for the 2018 season, with an expanded second division and two additional clubs the highlights. No team was relegated from the top division, with the same 10 teams from 2017 to contest for the 2018 title, while division two will expand to an eight-team division. Parkside, which earned promotion with its division 3 premiership this year, and Point Cook has been added to the second division as part of the expansion, with Point Cook joining the league’s senior ranks for the first time after crossing from the Victorian Amateur Football Association (VAFA). Point Cook has fielded junior sides in the league for many years, but decided at a special general meeting mid-season to transfer its senior sides to the WRFL as well for 2018 and beyond. Despite claiming the 2017 division 2 flag comprehensively, West Footscray will remain in the second tier. Glen Orden returns as a senior entity in 2018, after sitting out this season and concentrating on juniors, and will play in an eight-team division 3. The WRFL said it hoped the new structures would provide a more balanced competition, and hoped to return to its traditional promotion and relegation system for future seasons. “The 2018 divisional structures seek to re-establish balance and consolidate the respective divisions, whilst providing clubs with their optimum environment for sustainability,” the league said. “In determining the divisional make-up, consideration was given to the feedback and requests from all clubs as well as analysis on a number of fronts. “The league will re-examine the consolidated competition structures in 2018 with the view to returning to a standardised promotion and relegation ahead of the 2019 season.” The structure announcement comes as the November transfer window opened last week, with several players already moving clubs before starting pre-season. Paul Cutajar-Milosev has requested a move back to Braybrook (from Albion), after kicking 24 goals from 14 division 1 games this season, while Braybrook has also secured Nicholas Gregson from Tasmanian club Turners Beach, where he kicked 68 majors in 2017. Three-time Braybrook best and fairest winner Nathan Calleja has also re-signed with the club. Transfers are open throughout November, and will re-open again on February 1. Ewen McRae

Altona’s bats dominate

Star smacks a double century

By Ewen McRae Altona put in a dominant batting performance to overpower local rival Yarraville in Saturday’s sub district cricket T20 round. On a tough day for bowlers, Altona recovered from Yarraville’s strong start with the bat to eventually prevail with 13 balls to spare as it chased down the target of 129 with just one wicket lost along the way. Yarraville won the toss and batted first, and openers Matthew Love and Matthew Harrison built a strong foundation for the innings with an 82-run opening stand. Love was particularly damaging as he smashed 53, but when both fell in quick succession the remaining Yarraville batters struggled to go on with the job. Harrison finished with 27, and wicketkeeper Joe Billings hit a tidy 25, but no other player reached double figures as the visitors posted 5-129 off their 20 overs. In reply, Altona’s David Kinsella relaxed the dressing room with a stylish and at times brutal 69 not out, and his partnership with Sean Hollins (44) was the difference between the two sides. Hollins was run out with victory in sight, but Charlie Best (12 not out) joined Kinsella to ensure the points would go Altona’s way. The win lifted Altona to 2-1 after the first three rounds, and it hangs onto sixth place. Yarraville now has two losses for the year and will look to bounce back in a two-dayer against Preston starting this week. Elsewhere, Williamstown’s unbeaten start to the summer continued with an 18-run win over Werribee. After being sent in on Werribee’s home deck, Williamstown lost steady wickets throughout its innings but was held together by Mitchell Streiff, who posted 65.

James Cook was important for the visitors with 38 quick runs, but regular wickets cost Williamstown a bigger score as it posted 8-142. In reply, Werribee got off to a good start with a 56-run opening stand between Matthew Dean (41) and Adam Alifraco (26), but could

not capitalise on that momentum late in the innings. Werribee closed its 20 overs on 6-124. The win leaves Williamstown, Brunswick and Melton as the only unbeaten sides in the north west division, with the competition returning to two-day cricket from this weekend.

Konrad Kurta has been a star for Yarraville Club for some time, but he has never shone brighter than he did on Saturday. The all-rounder struck a career-best 214 as the Clubbers feasted on Tullamarine’s bowling to finish the day on 4-339, the highest score of the VTCA senior division season so far and the side’s second straight score above 300. After winning the toss and batting, the Clubbers were straight on to the back foot when Johnathon Blake departed for one in the early stages. That brought Kurta to the crease early to join Daniel Janka, with the pair steadying the ship with a 50-run partnership before Janka fell for 15. From there it was all the Clubbers, with Kurta and skipper Andrew Cullen posting a 251-run stand to take control. While the Tullamarine bowlers toiled hard, Kurta and Cullen were in a league of their own, with Kurta hitting 25 boundaries and five sixes, and Cullen playing more than a support role before being unluckily run out for 92 soon after the team 300 came up. Kurta went at nearly a run a ball in his 236-ball innings, which was his highest score and continues the dominance that has seen him post more than 600 runs in two of the past three seasons. The Clubbers are in the box seat to grab their third straight win of the season. Ewen McRae
