regions of Melbourne short of living outside of the boundaries of Melbourne,” he said. “This rise in prices … has been largely as a result of very strong population growth where Melbourne has been attracting a lot of migrants. “Most migrants are keen to buy something which is affordable; migrants tend to be home buyers.” Melbourne’s south-west beat the inner east, which recorded the nation’s second highest

property price growth at 31.8 per cent. Melbourne’s north came in at No.3 with 23.3 per cent growth. “Melbourne blitzed it, it really did, for the capital cities,” Mr Christopher said. “I don’t think that’s going to be repeated again next year. We haven’t seen this ourselves in a long time.” In the year to September, the Real Estate Institute of Victoria recorded 713 house sales in Hobsons Bay and 2306 in Wyndham.

Melbourne’s south-west region – stretching from Williamstown to Wyndham Vale – has recorded Australia’s fastest property price growth, according to a new report. SQM Research’s latest Housing Boom and Bust report shows the median house price across the region soared 42 per cent in the year to September. The median unit price rose by 16 per cent.

SQM managing director Louis Christopher said the south-west included the suburbs of Altona, Altona Meadows, Altona North, Seaholme, South Kingsville, Spotswood, Williamstown and Williamstown North. His research showed the median house price rose from $600,000 to $851,000. Mr Christopher cited affordability and population growth as two of the main drawcards of the south-west. “South-west is one of the most affordable 12363036-PB35-17 10057191-21

Council complaints at new high By Benjamin Millar Complaints about Maribyrnong council have soared in the past three years, making it the fourth most complained about council in the state. The Victorian Ombudsman’s Office annual report, released last week, shows the office received 113 complaints against Maribyrnong council in the 12 months to July. The result continues an upward trend from 78 complaints two years ago and 97 last year.

The only councils to attract more complaints this year were Casey, Moreland and Whittlesea, which each have more than double the population of Maribyrnong. There were 41 complaints against Hobsons Bay in the same period, up from 29 the year prior but below the 48 reports in 2014-15. The figures do not cover complaints directly made to councils. Victorian Ombudsman Deborah Glass said complaints received about local councils ranged from issues such as parking infringements,

rates and how complaints are handled, to improper conduct and poor governance. “We encourage councils to ‘learn to love complaints’ as each complaint is free feedback about what someone thinks,” she said. “We have also issued a good practice guide for complaint handling in local government to help local councils do it better … all too often, we see complaints about how a council has handled someone’s complaint.” Maribyrnong council acting chief executive Celia Haddock said the complaints listed in the

Greek history ready to come alive

report were in line with the average for other inner city councils. “Council is committed to the delivery of excellence in customer service and our Customer Service Charter is currently undergoing review,” she said. “Council undertakes regular reviews and improvements of our processes, services and mechanisms for providing information to our community to ensure that we provide an excellent quality of service to our community, in turn reducing the number of complaints.”

City firm on speed limit cut

The rich culture and history of the west’s Greek community will be on display when a Yarraville language school opens its doors for a day of festivities. Celebrations to mark the St Nicholas Greek Orthodox language school’s inaugural open day will include traditional Greek dancing, loukoumades (Greek donuts) and a sausage sizzle. Father Alexandros said the school and church had become the epicentre for many Greek migrants within Yarraville and the western suburbs, with the Greek community now including second and third generations. “We are proud to say we have 148 children enrolled with our school program, from prep classes to VCE – and we welcome new enrolments for 2018,” he said. “Additionally, the Greek language program is offered and is inclusive of both children from Greek and non-Greek backgrounds.” Father Alexandros said the school had an accredited VCE program and had enjoyed formal recognition by the state department of education for more than 20 years. Originally established during the late 1950s, St Nicholas Greek Orthodox church was rebuilt in 2003. Father Alexandros said many older Greek Australians were happy to see their grandchildren attend Greek school and maintain their Greek language skills. “The importance of St Nicholas Greek Orthodox church and its Greek language school cannot be under-estimated, having helped many Greek Australians preserve their Greek cultural identity over the years,” he said. The church also hosts a weekly youth group and cooks free meals for the elderly on Thursdays. The open day will be held from 11am to 2pm on Saturday, November 11, at 5-9 Murray Street, Yarraville.

Maribyrnong councillors have dismissed a backlash against plans to introduce blanket 40km/h speed limits on residential streets. Councillors last Tuesday unanimously voted to support a move that will cost more than $540,000 for new signage and line-marking and up to $18 million in total. A speed limit of 30km/h could also be introduced in central Footscray and a limit as low as 10km/h is being explored for Yarraville Village. Cr Martin Zakharov said Maribyrnong was behind other inner-Melbourne councils in pursuing the 40km/h limit, which was proving successful in Yarra and Port Phillip. He said a “shared pedestrian zone” in Yarraville would be Australia’s first outside a city centre. Council infrastructure services director Sunil Bhalla said the Yarraville proposal was “an initiative of councillor Zakharov” that had some merit and council officers had been considering its possible implementation. Council will also request VicRoads cut 60km/h speed limits to 50km/h for parts of arterial roads including Gordon Street, Churchill Avenue and Williamstown, Ballarat and Whitehall roads. Mayor Catherine Cumming said every 10km/h reduction in speed greatly increases a pedestrian’s chance of survival if hit by a vehicle. She conceded council’s plan had “copped a bit of a hammering”, but said there was a mindset in which people wanted drivers to slow down in their own streets yet were angered by having to slow down elsewhere.

Funds for nun on the run A nun whose parents once fled from Syria by boat has helped a Footscray organisation assisting asylum seekers raise more than $200,000. Sister Rita and her team of ‘Nuns on the Run’ completed the 10-kilometre walk at the Melbourne Marathon last Sunday, raising $17,628 for the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre. The broader Run 4 Refugees campaign raised $220,000 for the ASRC, making it the top fundraising team. Sister Rita assembled a group of six nuns from various parishes to join her for her 10th year participating in the campaign. “My parents immigrated from Syria and were boat people,” she said. “I was born here and call Australia home. Asylum seekers seek to call Australia home as well.”

Sister Rita has volunteered at the ASRC for more than 15 years. She spends a day each week as the day co-ordinator in the food bank and regularly visits unaccompanied minors in detention. “We can materially help asylum seekers through counselling, casework, legal aid and all the various programs, but it’s really about bringing the dignity back to the person who is seeking asylum because they are stripped of everything in the community,” she said. “The ASRC gives them dignity and respect, and treats them as a human being.” Run 4 Refugees has raised almost $1 million since 2007 to support the ASRC’s frontline programs and services. Victory for Maribyrnong reserve By Benjamin Millar Maribyrnong is set to play a central part in Melbourne Victory’s training regime under a $750,000 plan to redevelop a local playing field. Melbourne Victory Football Club (MVFC) has offered to spend $500,000 on fixing the playing surface of the cricket oval at Robert Barrett Reserve, creating two soccer training fields, in return for a proposed 10-year license agreement.

Maribyrnong council would chip in $250,000 for the upgrade works to the cricket oval, adjacent to the Maribyrnong Aquatic Centre, found by a council report to be lacking adequate drainage, irrigation or lighting. The oval is presently used for Saturday games and junior training by Barkly Street Uniting Cricket Club, one of the area’s oldest and largest cricket clubs. Melbourne Victory would use the pitches for about 15 hours of training per week, enabling

the cricket club to maintain access for training and Saturday games. Works would need to be completed by April 2018. Barkly Street Uniting Cricket Club administrator Jeffrey Law said the tight timeframe meant the council was initially going to kick the cricket club off the field barely halfway through the current cricket season. “We have made a compromise so it [work] would start in February, which means we

would only have to move one game,” Mr Law said. Maribyrnong councillors last week backed sending the plan out for consultation, noting it was an opportunity to cement ties with the popular sporting club. Melbourne Victory and the council last year entered an agreement to develop a junior football academy at Footscray Park and the club also inked a five-year strategic partnership earlier this year with Victoria University.

Game for baton duty A Braybrook schoolgirl and a young disability advocate will be among those carrying the Queen’s baton through Maribyrnong and Hobsons Bay during the 100-day countdown to the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games. Braybrook College student Linh Khong, 17, represented Australia at the Junior Taekwondo Championships in Italy in 2016, gaining a third placing, and is part of the school’s badminton team, which has twice reached the state finals. Other Maribyrnong baton bearers will include cyclist and Commonwealth Games medallist Remo Sansonetti and Susan Barton, a former Melburnian of the Year and a Victorian Senior of the Year finalist. Residents to carry the baton through Hobsons Bay will include Altona volunteer Beverly Dyall, 10-year-old Taj Fazekas, Williamstown local Carol Fox and Alex Gatt, who lives with life-threatening condition spinal muscular atrophy. The baton left Buckingham Palace on March

13 and will start its Australian journey on Christmas Day, 100 days before the Games’ opening ceremony on April 4. Baton bearers will take more than a million steps across Australia in carrying the baton to the Games. Maribyrnong mayor Catherine Cumming said Linh Khong was a great role model for other students and a wonderful ambassador for the area. Hobsons Bay mayor Sandra Wilson said several of the baton bearers were local residents recognised for their achievements and contributions to their community. Benjamin Millar

Pool work rocks the boat By Goya Dmytryshchak Altona beachgoers have slammed Hobsons Bay council for leaving popular swimming spot Flemings Pool full of rocks and without sand last week as the mercury topped 30°C. The pool at the end of Millers Road is named after the Fleming family that, in 1915, removed rocks to create a swimming hole. Earlier this year, the council built a 45-metre stormwater pipe encased in a revetment and placed rocks at the site.

Sixth-generation Altona resident Katrina Fleming (unrelated to the pool’s namesake) posted on Facebook: “It’s 30 degrees, lunchtime, the beach is packed and Fleming’s Pool is full of rocks. Not Cool #hobsonsbaycitycouncil, not cool.” She met Star Weekly at the site last Wednesday. “The Flemings were pivotal at the Baptist church,” Ms Fleming said. “They struggled to get parishioners on hot days so they decided to hold church meetings here in the water so that they could preach where everyone was cool and swimming.” Ms Fleming said the Flemings had moved all the rocks out of that way, but the council had dumped them all back again. Cheryl Gardner, granddaughter of one of the pool’s creators, Lawrence Fleming, said she had contacted the council. “I used to take my kids there … it’s a lovely spot, it’s the best part of Altona,” she said. “My

father and my grandfather moved a few big rocks … so people could go in there and swim.” Historian Peter Weaver, who grew up 100 metres from Flemings Pool, said that while the council works were needed to stop erosion, the state the pool had been left in was “disgusting”. “While nature will take its course and do something there, they need to address it for summer because everyone is up in arms,” he said.

“There’s no beach there at high tide any more.” Hobsons Bay mayor Sandra Wilson and councillor Tony Briffa said the council would remove the rocks except for a line of larger boulders to bolster the seawall. “This will clean up Flemings Pool, which is currently suffering the effects of the longer season of south-westerly winds,” Cr Wilson said.

MPs up in the air over sky rail Western suburbs Liberal MP Bernie Finn last week told State Parliament he was concerned Williamstown would be “ruined by a sky rail” as part of plans to remove the Ferguson Street level crossing. Mr Finn asked that Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allan attend a public meeting with Williamstown constituents to discuss concerns about sky rail. “It seems to me that this is an issue that does impact a huge number of people in the Williamstown area,” Mr Finn said. “The people of Williamstown are seeing what is happening on the Caulfield line and some of the areas Carnegie way … and they do not want to see that happen in Williamstown.” Williamstown MP Wade Noonan said it was premature to be discussing design options. “The Ferguson Street crossing removal is not due to be completed until 2022,” he said. “As such, detailed design work to determine a preferred crossing removal option is not expected to commence any earlier than 2019. “Community consultation will be a critical part of the project’s process for selecting a design.” Hobsons Bay council this month announced 12 people had been selected for a Ferguson Street Level Crossing Interest Group to represent the community and advise the council. Fake certificates land man in jail By Goya Dmytryshchak A man has been jailed for four months after accepting cash kickbacks for issuing certificates to drive trucks and other heavy vehicles. Former Linfox employee Michael Harrington, 65, this month pleaded guilty in the County Court to receiving secret commissions and giving false or misleading documents while employed at Laverton and Avalon. His offending happened between 2006 and 2012.

In her sentencing remarks, Judge Liz Gaynor said Harrington’s offending, in terms of its potential effect, had been extremely dangerous. “Because of you and other persons involved in this offending, hundreds of persons were able to drive heavy vehicles on the roads, some of the largest and potentially most lethal vehicles we see on our roads, in some cases, clearly, for many hours at a time on long haul drives, who were not properly tested,” she said. The court heard Harrington’s actions had allowed people to drive vehicles weighing up to 62.5 tonnes (62,500 kilograms).

Judge Gaynor said Harrington received $28,560 for issuing 25 certificates of competency where the applicants were not required to undergo any driver training or testing. The court heard Harrington wasn’t trying to get rich but took shortcuts due to work demands, which progressed into taking cash for looking the other way or helping to verify false documents. It was further alleged Harrington deceived VicRoads by issuing 309 certificates which falsely stated the holder had successfully

completed training by Linfox testers. VicRoads identified 784 people who had been tested by Harrington since 2005 and notified them they had to be re-tested. Judge Gaynor said 133 passed the re-test, 144 surrendered their certificate, 267 failed to make an appointment, 117 failed the re-test and 21 didn’t attend their appointment. The remainder either held an interstate licence, had a licence that wasn’t current, were tested elsewhere or had already surrendered their certificate prior to the investigation.

Billy’s seal of approval A sick and injured seal who was nursed back to health after coming ashore at Williamstown has returned, much to the delight of locals. Earlier this month, “Billy the Seal” was spotted near a running track on the Strand by Sherry Rich. “I thought it was strange to see a young seal alone so I called Western Animal Rescue,” she said. Billy was taken to Melbourne Zoo for X-rays and nursed back to health by the AGL Marine Response Unit. Keeper James Uren said Billy had a nasty cut under his chin and a tennis-ball sized abscess under his left flipper. Fortunately, the infection hadn’t gone into his bone. “He stayed with us for a few days just to get a bit of treatment on those wounds and a check-up,” Mr Uren said. “After those few days it was deemed that his injuries had healed enough and he’d had

some long-lasting antibiotic injections and we decided to release him. “Our aim is to not keep them in captivity too long because we don’t want them to habituate to humans at all.” It’s illegal to go within 30 metres of a seal on land or 50 metres on a man-made structure. Billy, who is believed to be just 10 months old, was last week spotted sunning himself back at Williamstown – about 100 kilometres from where he was released at Point Lonsdale. “He’s a pretty young seal so he’s pretty adventurous and probably just cruising out and around on his own” Mr Uren said. “Once he’s sexually mature he will end up going to a colony and looking to breed, but for the time being a young seal like that is probably just going to be cruising along the coast … enjoying catching fish and playing around.” Goya Dmytryshchak

Become an organ donor and you can save up to nine lives. My donor, my hero.” A gathering to farewell Coen will be held at Williamstown Town Hall on Saturday, October 28 at 2pm. An inspirational advocate for organ donation, Coen Ashton, has died. Coen, 20, was born with cystic fibrosis and diagnosed with insulin-dependent diabetes at eight. His family moved to Newport from Queensland to be close to The Alfred hospital as Coen awaited a kidney transplant. At 13, he became the youngest person to jet-ski the 2000-kilometre length of the Murray River to raise awareness of organ donation. His efforts, while awaiting a double lung transplant, resulted in about 1000 people signing up to the Australian organ donor register. Coen underwent a double lung transplant when he was 15. He had been awaiting a life-saving kidney transplant from either his mother Dawn or father Mark, when he died in hospital last Wednesday. In a family statement, Coen’s parents and brother Kai said he had lived life the way that everyone should, never wasting a day. “He loved sharing his zest for life and changed many people’s lives along the way. “He enjoyed having everyone along to follow his life adventure. “We will dearly miss him and the adventures he sent us on. There are no regrets, Coen never wasted a day.” Coen received the 2011 national Pride of Australia Child of Courage and People’s Choice Award. Unsung heroes saluted Footscray transgender activist Melissa Griffiths has been nominated as the 2017 Victorian LGBTI Person of the Year. The 2017 GLOBE Community Awards, to be held this Saturday, will recognise Victorian LGBTI business and industry leaders for their impact in the community. Ms Griffiths was nominated for her work in championing transgender rights, particularly in the workplace. She said she worked to raise awareness of issues in a way that would hopefully make the world a better place. “I want to make the workplace more inclusive for transgender people,” she said. “It’s like a barrier between us and them; we’ve still got a way to go.”

Ms Griffiths said that while some workplaces offered supportive environments for transgender staff, others were less welcoming. “These archaic attitudes still exist – it’s important to have appropriate training to cut out the gossip or questions that are clearly inappropriate.” The 2017 GLOBE Community Awards will bring together about 450 volunteers, sports people, researchers and community groups. GLOBE president David Micallef said that with the same-sex marriage postal survey under way, there had never been a more important time to celebrate successes and shine a light on unsung heroes. NEWS STARWEEKLY.COM.AU

MY PLACE Retiring Altona pharmacist Martin Didzys speaks with Goya Dmytryshchak about some of his strange encounters over 40-odd years.

I’ve lived in Altona nearly all my life. I came here in 1950, went to Altona Primary School, went to Willy High, and then I found work in Altona as a pharmacist and stayed here for the rest of my days. What do you like about Altona? Well, in the good old days, it had a nice beach, a nice pier – it had a diving board at the end of the pier and after school you could meet all your friends and see and be seen. Now, the beach is still there and it’s a nice place to relax on, go for a swim. What would you change? I don’t like the fact that all the houses are being pulled down and bigger buildings put up. People are losing their backyards, streets are getting too tight, too congested. The density of Altona … the days are gone when you could recognise every face in Altona. You’ve been robbed a few times in your pharmacy … Once, we were held up by two fellows with knives and one of them apprehended my shop assistant at the bank counter and the other one came around the back into the dispensary and

waved his knife around and told me to get on the floor. And I said no – I was in my best suit to go to a funeral. So, I sat on a stool. I had another hold-up more recently. A young fellow came in and he held me up with a plastic gun. I thought he was after some hard drugs but, no, he was only after some sleeping pills. So, I got some herbal pills off the shelf and he was happy with that. Then he saw the till was half ajar, so he grabbed $135 out of there and went for it. I chased him outside. Two young men came in the opposite direction and I said, ‘Hey, help me catch that fellow, he’s just robbed me’. One of these people … ran after him and caught him up and grabbed a fence post. I saw him whack him over the back and I saw the post splinter into pieces and the robber stumbled and fell. Then the mum rang the next day to say how sorry she was for me. You’ve had other unusual customers … There was a tiger snake curled up in the corner. I had a small hessian bag and I coaxed the snake into the hessian bag and I carried him over past the school into one of the paddocks and let him go. Then, we had a horse … he went plod, plod, plod into the shop and I thought, gee, we’re gonna knock things over’. But he was very calm. He obviously wanted some medicine – he was a bit depressed.

PATRINA JONES, GOLD 104.3 FM BREAKFAST NEWS PRESENTER

As always, if you have any recipes, tips or other info you’d like to share, email me at sarah@ howdypartnersmedia.com.au

FB: How would you rate your cooking skills? PJ: I get by, but if I’m truthful, my husband wears the chef’s hat in our house. FB: What is your signature dish? PJ: I love to make a batch of scones on a Sunday with my little girl. We use lemonade in the dough and once cooked, serve with my mother’s homemade raspberry jam and whipped cream and get the family around. I use all my best china, some handed down through the generations. It’s a nice way to slow down before another busy week. And the dog patiently waits to lick the beaters! FB: If you could only have one more meal, what would it be? PJ: My Nanna’s pea soup and beef stew, mopped-up with lashings of homemade bread and butter. My Pa was a shearer and she often catered for teams of hungry men. She was a basic cook, but somehow summonsed enormous flavour in her food. FB: What is your favourite TV food show and who is your favourite TV food person? PJ: Nigella Lawson. Let’s face it, she makes pigging into the fridge look sexy. But Marco Pierre White can serve me breaky in bed any day. FB: What is your favourite food? PJ: Hands down, Yum-Cha. It takes years to master. We love the ginger and scallop dumplings and the calamari goes alright as well. But forget Chinatown in the city, you have to venture out to the suburbs to find the best. Gold Leaf Sunshine is our favourite go-to. FB: What is your favourite drink? PJ: Jansz Vintage Rose’ is my indulgence. My husband and I paid $100 for a bottle at Matt Moran’s Aria in Sydney. Mind you, we could’ve ducked into the local bottle-o and paid only $20! And mojito’s always go down a treat, especially with extra mint. In my radio work, I come across all sorts of interesting people. But I was particularly excited to meet one recent studio visitor – Tom Parker Bowles: food writer, food critic and all-round food lover who just happens to be the son of Prince Charles’ wife, Camilla Parker Bowles. I just had to get a photo for the column! Tom’s back in Australia to host the latest reality show offering that’s about to start on Channel Nine, Family Food Fight Fight. It was after filming The Hotplate here a couple of years ago that Tom admitted in a Fairfax interview to being obsessed with Australia after eating his way around the country. And as you can see by this week’s food quote, Tom hates food snobbery.

Business of the Year

I congratulate you all. I would also like to thank our valued sponsors and our judges who so generously gave their time to support our business community, to visit with, assess and select the winners. There were so many outstanding businesses in this year’s awards that choosing one winner for the Mayoral Award was most difficult. I have a passion for social enterprise and there are elements of this winner’s entrepreneurial venture that are for the common good. It was with great pleasure that I had the opportunity to select the winner of the 2017 Mayoral Award, Mamma Knows West. Congratulations to our Business of the Year, Modscape, to Mamma Knows West and to all of our category winners selected from a commendable array of finalists. Through the work outlined in our Economic Development Strategy, Council is committed to supporting and driving economic growth. We welcome the input of our business operators and encourage you to keep informed and remain engaged with Council via our economic development mailing list, training and regular networking opportunities.

Modular home run Each Awards, the Business of the Year is chosen from

all category award winners, with the winner of this prestigious award collectively decided by the judges. Each category winner is assessed on a range of factors throughout the judging process, with consideration given to each winner’s business planning process and customer service and values, as well as their commitment to staff health and wellbeing, sustainability and innovation. Brooklyn-based modular design and construction company, Modscape, is the deserving winner this year. Modscape’s managing director Jan Gyrn says the business, founded in 2006, was formed by people who value design, innovation and sustainability. “The owners combine their extensive experience in the design, development and construction industries to create modular homes – or masterpieces, as we’re happy to describe them,” he says. “The span of our projects begins at tiny, off-the-grid

homes and small bars through to multi-storey residential projects and education facilities. And we oversee projects, from design right through to installation. “As a business, we try to instil a cultural attitude of passion for all our clients’ projects, and our service focus revolves around our ability to be a one-stop shop for design, construction and delivery.” Jan reports that Modscape has plans of continued diversification of product development, as well as the expansion of the Brooklyn facility. The win is one the business will undoubtedly celebrate, particularly as it meshes with Modscape’s keenness to continue their ongoing engagement with Council and their Hobsons Bay community, as it has grown and evolved in 11 years’ operation. Jan suggests a visit to the company’s website, modscape. com.au, will show the expertise, creativity and adherence to sustainability principles employed in all their projects. “The modular designs the team have worked on are truly impressive.”

High-class hearing help is here J

ust one in five audiology clinics is independent – and Marina Opacak from Active Audiology in Altona says this number will only get smaller as large corporations buy up smaller operators. A full-time audiologist, Marina finds working with an independent clinic very rewarding. “Having independence gives me the complete freedom to prescribe exactly what I believe is the most suitable technology for a client,” she explains. “And for this reason, many locals are referring their friends and family to us because our hearing solutions actually work. “We see a lot of clients who have consulted other hearing companies and, unfortunately, experienced very poor treatment – and in some cases, felt they were being ripped off. “One poor lady was very upset because she felt she was being forced to buy a hearing aid when she didn’t understand why. She came to us through a friend who’d previously received our services. “Our receptionist spent a long time with her before she went into her appointment – just to reassure her she was in good hands and wouldn’t be pushed into anything she was unsure about.

Bargain brews and party hits I

f you are under the impression that the recently opened Premix King in Williamstown is “just another bottle-o”, think again.

“This is a liquor outlet packed with surprises.”

This is a liquor outlet packed with surprises. It is, as owner-director Simon Alessi describes it, “an experience” for locals to discover. They do things differently at Premix Kings (PMK). “For a start,” Simon says, “we don’t just do six-packs of beer and pre-mixes. We do a range of sizes and seven-packs often work out cheaper than the sixes. For example, we stock imported beers literally picked up at the dock. Our Italian, German or other European brews are the real-deal, but we sell them cheaper than all the ‘big boys’ do. “We’re exclusive stockists of Dam, a German beer, which we sell at the moment for $1.50 a can, or 10 for $15. We also have a huge range of ciders, again at seriously lower than normal prices.” The store’s specialty is premixes, with a quirky, fun and affordable range to get any party going. The service team of Rachel, Nico and Agron have advice and know-how at their fingertips, so can be a big help when designing the alcohol list for any type of gathering. “Our 500ml flasks of Trivoski – a triple-filtered 22 per cent liqueur – which come with two litres of orange juice or soda, are just $7.99, or $4.99 flask only,” Simon says. “Compare that with anywhere! And we have vodka test tubes, paired with a soft drink, which are very popular. “Another interesting one is our Little Fat Lamb premix pack, with great flavours such as

Rachel O’Rafferty and Maria Spuna, top right, the store (Pictures: Damjan Janevski) and mascots Lady Guava and King Rock. (Supplied) passionfruit. These are popular for hen’s parties, 21sts and the like, as are our premix shots in six favourite flavours starting at $4 a pack. And we sell shot games for parties.” While the store’s dedicated wine room has a “penny-pinchers” section – where you can pick up a good red, white or bubbly for as little as three for $10 – there are also plenty of premium wines

on the shelves – again, seriously discounted. So why did Simon and partner Maria Spuria launch their new venture? Maria tells: “Premix Kings has 20-odd stores in regional Victoria and we just knew the concept was ready to be taken to Melbourne. We also knew we had huge buying power through our affiliations, which means we can always offer great discounts. Who

doesn’t love a genuine bargain? Especially when some of our products are exclusive … and we have a store that revolves around customer enjoyment. “We don’t just talk it up, we back it up!” Premix King, Shop 6, 79 Douglas Parade, Williamstown. Opens 10am-9pm weekdays, 10am-11pm weekends. Inquiries: 0433 811 156

The generous open-plan dining and lounge room with gas fireplace leads to the sumptuous outdoor undercover entertaining zone.

Step into this perfect family residence that appears to get bigger and bigger as you venture within. Open the front door and be wowed by space and style with four bedrooms, two with built-in robes. The main bedroom has an en suite and walk-in robe. The kitchen is thoroughly modern with floor-to-ceiling cabinetry, stone benchtops and high-end appliances. With a separate lounge room, the open-plan dining-living area has made-to-measure timber concertina doors that open to a downlit deck with heating. The bespoke central staircase adds to the wow factor. Upstairs there are two further bedrooms, a retreat and a stylish bathroom. There is a paved barbecue area and lawn for children to play. In the heart of Williamstown, this house has multiple extras including CBUS remote lighting and a fireplace.

timber fretwork. Currently configured as three bedrooms, two living areas, the luxury of space provides the flexibility to create four bedrooms. All but one of the front four rooms has a fireplace with period-style mantel, with the three bedrooms fitted with stylish built-in robes. The main bedroom has a contemporary en suite. It has been tastefully renovated, within a property that has found the ideal balance between old and new. The kitchen, part of the extension, has stone benchtops, a twin-drawer dishwasher,

breakfast bench and plenty of storage. The large walk-in pantry, a fantastic addition. The kitchen overlooks the generous meals area and lounge room where sliding doors open to a great deck, beyond which is the sunny north-facing backyard. With a wide side-drive, carport and single car garage beyond, here is a property that ticks all the boxes for family living. Currently leased at $1000 per week, this could be a fantastic high-end investment prospect. Elphin Street is a picturesque, period-rich street that runs from Hall Street (right by

Newport train station), through to Douglas Parade with Newport Park and its skate park, playground and running track across the road. With the water’s edge and gym five minutes’ walk further down North Road, it is understandably a popular location. Together with popular cafe The Pint of Milk just down the street, you’ll enjoy living in this fantastic family residence, close to private and public schools and Douglas Parade shopping. FOOD REVIEW

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir discovers an Indian restaurant that raises the bar Curry Cafe Canteen is a new arrival that adds much colour and wonder to the already diverse offerings of one of our favourite food strips. The place – done out in wood and stools, and very chic in a comfy way – has been open just a few days when we visit. And – as we discover to our ecstatic delight – it is raising the bar for all Indian food offerings in the western suburbs. It’s not so much that the menu offers anything unusual, spectacular or innovative. It’s just that everything we try has the stamp of Indian cooking expertise all over it. Even better, there is a level of freshness and an exuberance of flavour that leaves most Indian places for dead. And they do it all at prices that fit, with room to move, into the cheap eats category. And there’s craft beer and organic wine on the way. Take Bennie’s pav cholle ($8), for example. All too often, when we order an Indian snack dish that involves a chick pea curry, the curry is dull and appears and tastes tired. No such problem here – the chick pea brew is fresh and alive with vim. The buttered brioche rolls and kachumba salad are similarly fine. My thali ($12) comes with vibrant lamb madras that puts the meat curries served in most Indian places to shame. The pickles vividly illustrate, again, the freshness of the Curry Cafe Canteen food and the care put into it.

CURRY CAFE CANTEEN Address: 334 Racecourse Road, Flemington Phone: 0498 003 970 Here the pickles are made in-house using lemon, lime, pepper, mango, lotus stem and garlic – and they’re soft. Another point of difference is the dal makhani. In most Indian eateries, this dish is overloaded with cream. Not so here – it’s a way more austere and plain pulse offering, and all the better for it. While we’re about our Sunday lunch, we get some extras from the lunch menu. Garlic naan ($2.50) and roti ($2) are very good. Onion bhajji ($3) are excellent Indian onion rings. A serve of two smallish samosas ($3) affirm the high quality of the food here. These are a bit more delicate than we’re mostly familiar with, expertly fried, have peas on board, are wonderful and are served with more of that salad and a nice tamarind chutney. I’m told that the pav dishes and the thali set-up are available for lunch only. But even going a la carte with the evening menu will surely be a winner. After all, all curries are in the $10 to $13 range. Kenny Weir is the founder of Consider the Sauce, the definitive guide to eating in Melbourne’s western suburbs – www.considerthesauce.net

SPORT City stays the course

IN THE DOGHOUSE

By Lance Jenkinson

■ The Jake Stringer saga, if you can call it that, is over for the Bulldogs’ faithful. It only highlights that for the players this is their profession not their passion, the total opposite to the mindset of supporters. I hope the red, white and blue army keep that in mind when the Doggies play the Bombers next year. I cringe when I hear Cal Ward booed because unfortunately good-natured booing is a thing of the past. I well remember the day Doug Hawkins, in a Fitzroy jumper, played the Dogs at Whitten Oval. We booed him, yelled at him, tormented him and then had beers with him after. I can’t see that happening with Jake. Good luck to him at his new place of employment but mostly I hope he gets his life back on track. ■ The three Bulldog players picked up in the trade period will have an impact but the big move really was Ameet Bains being appointed chief executive. The former St Kilda football manager has an interesting few months ahead. Many believe the club has lost the momentum from the premiership win and membership will drop off after missing the finals this year. I think Bulldogs fans are made of sterner stuff and while disappointed, they will not drop off. We all may have basked in the premiership glow for a bit longer than probably needed but after 62 years that is not a crime. I look forward to hosting the final Inside the Kennel show for 2017 with all the recruits on December 7. More details soon. ■ Always lots of football news about with players and coaches but the umpires have also been busy with a changing of the guard on the committee of the Western Region Umpires Association. Steve Sutton was voted in as new president at the recent AGM with Adrian O’Donnell his vice president. Vaughan Garner is treasurer and Terry O’Donnell the secretary. After many years of dedicated service Henry McFerran, Alan Shutt, Paul Battaglia and Richard Watt stepped down from their positions.

Footscray bowlers rise to the challenge

Footscray middle order batsman Matthew Underwood has started the season in positive fashion. (Shawn Smits)

Footscray has produced a devastating performance with the ball to come away with a resounding 67-run win over two-time Victorian Premier Cricket defending champions Fitzroy Doncaster in a one-day game at Merv Hughes Oval on Saturday. Considering the previous four innings at the venue this season yielded 200-plus scores, the Bulldogs must have felt slightly uncomfortable after making 186 off 49 overs. Many Bulldogs batsmen got starts, but none went on to make an eye-catching score. Opener Greg Munro was the Dogs’ top scorer with 42 off 58 balls. Munro featured in a 70-run second wicket partnership with Travis Dean, who made 37 off 47. It was tough going for the Bulldogs thereafter with Matthew Underwood the pick of the rest with 33 off 58 and tail-ender Jack Sheppard carving out a valuable 20 not out off 27. If Footscray was to claim victory, it needed a

66 MARIBYRNONG & HOBSONS BAY STAR WEEKLY \ OCTOBER 25, 2017

top shelf bowling effort, and that’s what it got. Jonah Koch got the ball rolling for the Bulldogs with 2-24 off six, including the important scalp of Glenn Maxwell cheaply for six. Sheppard took 3-25 off six with all three wickets being recognised batsmen. Tim Buszard cleaned up the Fitzroy Doncaster tail to finish with 4-14 off 7.3 and leave the Lions all out for 119. Buszard is the equal leading wicket-taker in the competition with eight wickets, level with four other players from opposition clubs. Consecutive wins has seen Footscray leap up to sixth on the ladder. The in-form Bulldogs will hit the road for the first time this season on Saturday when they face Monash Tigers at Central Reserve. Both teams are 2-1 and looking to break into the top four. Lance Jenkinson

■ The Spotswood women’s team coaching position I mentioned recently has been filled by Theo Theodorou. Matt Walsh will co-coach reigning premiers North Footscray with Jono Miller and Yarraville Seddon Eagles will be in the capable hands of Vinnie Turcinovich. Former Eagles coach Dean ‘Nippa’ Callaway will be at Altona coaching the under 19s.

Altona City was in shock when this season’s title-winning coach Andy O’Dell handed in his resignation, but the transition in the post-O’Dell era has run smoother than expected. City has found an experienced new coach in Paul Donnelly to steer the club’s promotion to the Football Federation Victoria men’s state league 1 next season. Donnelly’s appointment was met with positivity among the existing City players, with the club extending the contracts of key players, including goalkeeper Jack Dovey and strikers Ayodeji Omoboye and Marcus Sherif. City has also announced the signing of midfielder James Playford, a former England C under-21 player who has played with English lower league clubs Grimsby Town and Doncaster Rovers, and brought across proven state league 1 striker Adamson Ajayi from Altona Magic. It is his belief in Donnelly that allows City president Joe Tanti to sleep easy at night, knowing the team is in good hands. “With Andy leaving, it was a bit of a shock, the club had no idea he was going to leave,” Tanti said. “Andy was huge for us, a massive influence and he’s directed us in the way we wanted to go. “We knew something was up towards the end of the season and he told the club he couldn’t handle doing it next year, he’s got a few personal issues going on, so he thought he’d pass it on to someone else and Paul’s lucky enough to take the keys to the Ferrari. “We’re rapt to get Paul.” Donnelly has playing and coaching experience at most levels of Victoria soccer. He has coached at City’s neighbours Altona East Phoenix, Western Suburbs and Melbourne Knights, and won the league with North Sunshine Eagles. His experience in an NPL set-up at Richmond is seen as invaluable because that is where City envisage themselves down the track and that is where the B licence coach wants to take his new club. “He’s got the ambitions to coach in the NPL and that’s what we want,” Tanti said. “We want someone with the drive … to reach higher and hopefully they can influence the club and push us forward. “He’s a similar mould to Andy as far as what we wanted and we feel as though he’ll get along with the boys well and connect with the group. “Once we appointed Paul, the response from the boys was great. Most of the players have re-committed, he’s well known and the boys are very happy with the appointment.”

Young hoops star dares to dream big The good news keeps coming for young basketballer Amy Kurkowski. Kurkowski, a pupil at Lumen Christi Catholic Primary School in Point Cook, was already ecstatic to be representing Victoria at the School Sport Australia Pacific School Games Basketball Championships in December, then she was informed of her selection for Vic Metro at the Southern Cross Challenge in January. “It’s a huge honour,” Kurkowski said. “I love Victoria, it’s amazing to play for them and represent my state and my school. It’s going to be a lot of fun and an amazing experience.” Kurkowski began playing basketball at the age of eight with the Altona Gators. It was not long before the Point Cook resident started to impress and make the leap into the Gators’ representative teams. A move to the Melbourne Tigers, working under coaches Ray Tomlinson and Nick

Abdicevic, saw her skills, work rate and discipline improve. Kurkowski has been moulded into a player with massive potential and that was noticed by the Victorian selectors. If there is one attribute that Kurkowski displays above all else, it is a high work ethic. “I train every day for roughly two hours,” she said. “I play games on Saturday and on Friday.” Asked if she suffered from basketball overload sometimes, Kurkowski replied: “Nah – I love it!” Kurkowski dares to dream big. The 12-year-old wants to represent the Australian Opals and play in America’s WNBA. She took inspiration from ‘that’ Liz Cambage dunk in the Olympic Games and watched on in awe as the Minnesota Lynx took out this season’s WNBA title. Kurkowski loves to watch the Melbourne

Boomers play locally and is keeping a close watch on the progress of western suburbs up-and-comer Monique Conti. But if there is one player above all that Kurkowski looks up to, it is a Golden State Warrior. “My role model is Steph Curry,” she said. “He just motivates me to keep going.” Kurkowski plays in the same position on the court as Curry and they have similar attributes. Kurkowski mixes her speed, shooting, ball handling and defensive skills to good effect and hopes to unleash her best when she represents the Big V. “I like to lead the team as the point guard,” she said. “You’ve got to tell everyone what you’re doing, where you want them to go and just set up the plays.” Lance Jenkinson

Bulldogs’ dynamic duo

Openers fire as Williamstown piles on runs

By Lance Jenkinson Western Bulldogs have landed the best prospect in the nation and the best prospect from their own backyard in an AFL Women’s Draft double swoop. The Bulldogs used their top selection in the draft to secure star utility Isabel Huntington, who is known for racking up the possessions in the midfield and her work in the air and at ground leval as a forward. Huntington rose to prominence at the 2016 AFL Youth Girls National Championships, where she caught the eye with a stunning 30-possession, five goal performance in one game. Selection of the 18-year-old Huntington does not come without its risks, considering she was forced to miss a full season of football after tearing her ACL. She is so highly rated at the Bulldogs, they decided to surrender their golden ticket to get the Melbourne University player on their list. “We’re really excited to have Isabel on board for next year,” Bulldogs AFLW coach Paul Groves said. “She’s an incredibly versatile player, so we’re looking forward to seeing what she can bring to our forward line, while assisting our already strong group of midfielders.” With the fourth overall selection, Western Bulldogs chose multi-sport star Monique Conti, a product of the Maribyrnong Sports Academy. Despite standing at 175 centimetres, Conti is rated highly for her marking ability and competitiveness. Conti is a speed machine and has quick hands out of a pack. The 17-year-old from Maidstone played a vital role for the Calder Cannons in the TAC Cup this season. She has successfully combined elite football with basketball, where she plays for the Melbourne Boomers in the WNBL. Bulldogs list manager Michael Sandry described Conti as a “really exciting player”. “Her speed in traffic and competitiveness around the ball are skills that we value really highly,” Sandry said. The Bulldogs had five selections in the draft, securing midfielder and St Kilda Sharks best-and-fairest winner Jenna Bruton with pick 11, AFLW U18 All Australian midfielder-forward Daria Bannister from Tasmania with pick 19 and Box Hill midfielder and best-and-fairest Emma Mackie with pick 27. The Bulldogs made two selections in the AFLW rookie draft, claiming Wyndhamvale and VU Western Spurs product Naomi Ferres with pick three and Mornington’s Bonnie Toogood with pick 11. Meanwhile, the Western Bulldogs had a busy AFL trade and free agency period. Key defender Jackson Trengove, from Port Adelaide, and half-back flanker Hayden Crozier, from Fremantle, arrived early in

proceedings with relatively little fanfare. But a frantic final day of trading saw the Bulldogs trade out forward Jake Stringer to Essendon for two second round picks, which were on-traded to Carlton for pick 16 and a future second rounder. The trade significantly bolstered the Bulldogs ability at this year’s draft as they now boast two picks inside the top 16. That was not the end of the Bulldogs involvement in trade week, as they made a late

play for young Brisbane Lions full forward Josh Schache and got their man. Schache was the second overall pick in the 2015 AFL draft, but was reportedly homesick and requested a fresh start in Victoria. The Bulldogs sent picks 25 and 40 to the Lions and got a key forward back who is brimming with potential. Meanwhile, Western Bulldogs have appointed Ameet Bains to the role of chief executive officer.

A 153-run opening stand put Williamstown in the box seat against Kew in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association at the Williamstown Cricket Ground on Saturday. Brenton Hodges (83) and Patrick O’Malley (84) gave the Seagulls a perfect start en route to the side’s commanding 286 off 75.5 overs. It was not all plain sailing for Williamstown, which lost its last eight wickets for 88 runs. Brent McMinn made a handy 27 and Dale McDonald (17), Mitchell Streiff (13) and Craig Sheedy (14) were all out in the teens, but the Seagulls crumbled thereafter to keep Kew in the contest. Kew showed that it has runs in its bats, posting 6-231 off just 45 overs a week earlier, so Williamstown will need to be on its game if it is to improve to 2-0 on this young season. It was a hellish day for Yarraville in the field as it chased the red ball all over the park against Brunswick at Gillon Oval. The Wicks made a nigh on unassailable 7-354 with in-form Charles Aitken leading the way with 121. The pick of the Yarraville bowlers was Josh Turner with 3-62, while Joshua Raymer took 2-81, including the major scalp of Aitken. Altona is well on top in its clash with Ivanhoe at Grant Reserve. The A’s are 2-61 in reply to Ivanhoe’s 172 and should be able to execute a successful run chase when play resumes on Saturday. In the Victorian Turf Cricket Association, Spotswood could not have asked for a better start to its battle with Greenvale Kangaroos at McLean Reserve. Not only did the Woodsmen post an impressive 6-270 declared, but their plan to bowl four overs late in the day yielded an early wicket. Gene Maurice was a standout for Spotswood with the bat, making 91, while Sam Dishon contributed 50. Seddon has already lost on first innings to Keilor, while Yarraville Club is 1-44 in its chase for Strathmore’s 189. In north west division, St Albans has set Laverton a massive task, posting 9-259 declared. Laverton lost two late wickets to be 2-7 at stumps. Altona North struggled with the bat to make just 141, but remains a fighting chance after Keilor Park limped to stumps on 4-41. Lance Jenkinson

Altona to regroup after a difficult start to season Altona has made a stuttering start to the Bowls Victoria premier division season, but co-captain Ben Loughlin feels it’s too early to hit the panic button. The A’s went into the season widely tipped to be a contender, but with just one win from three games, the pressure is starting to mount. Loughlin conceded the mid-table A’s are not where they want to be at this point of time. “Certainly not [happy],” he said. “The two sides we’ve lost to are two of the best top four sides in the comp. “Essendon won a flag two years ago, Melbourne won a flag last year, so they’re the two losses we’ve had and both have been under double figures. “We’ve lost to quality opposition, but we’re also not quite putting it all together at the moment.” Altona’s loss to Essendon was a heartbreaker. The A’s won two rinks and split another, but still went down 85-78 overall after one rink was beaten heavily. “We’ve been in winning positions the past two weeks at 60 ends and we’ve lost those last 20 ends,” Loughlin said. “We’ve only got ourselves to blame. We’re not playing the game out 100 per cent, we’re

playing three quarters of the game and letting ourselves down at the finish.” It continues Altona’s poor record at Essendon’s home green at Windy Hill. Historically it has been a venue where the A’s have struggled and the hoodoo lives on. “They’ve definitely got the wood on us, especially on their home ground at Windy Hill,” Loughlin said. “It’s always a tough place to play and they’ve touched us up over there the last four or five years.” While the overall result was a bitter pill to swallow, there were plenty of positives for Altona to take away from the game. New recruit Dion Warnecke has made a strong early impression. “He’s been really good for us since he came across from Werribee this year,” Loughlin said. “He had a really solid game for us.” Reed Chanter has evolved into a leader at Altona, even though he does not have the tag. “He’s not a skip, but he leads up front and gives his skip a good start every week,” Loughlin said. “He’s got a really good attitude, he’s a good team player and has plenty of voice. “He’s always getting around everyone and it’s all positive.” It will be two desperate 1-2 sides when

Len Callus sends one down for Altona. (Damjan Janevski)

Altona hosts newly promoted Deer Park at Civic Parade on Saturday. “It’s going to be a bit of a local rivalry now,” Loughlin said. “We need to go 2-2 because we certainly don’t want to go 1-3.” Meanwhile, Yarraville-Footscray suffered

its first loss of the season, taken down 110-83 by MCC away. The Bulldogs will be involved in a top-of-the-ladder clash with top side Melbourne at Francis Street on Saturday. Lance Jenkinson

Rams to raise the bar By Lance Jenkinson With two similarly matched teams entering the day with an identical 2-1 record, it was quite possible the team that made the least amount of errors would come away with victory. Disappointingly for the Newport Rams, it was their mistakes that went punished by the Sunshine Eagles in a 7-4 loss in the Baseball Victoria summer league division 1 at Barclay Reserve on Saturday. “Both teams were playing good baseball, so it was a good chance to see where they’re at and where we’re at this year,” Rams coach David Asp said. “We just had a couple of sloppy plays in the third inning where they scored a couple of unearned runs and that changed the game.” Newport supporters got a first look at new import Riley Barr. The American arrived in Melbourne on Wednesday and was immediately inserted as the starting pitcher. Barr threw four strong innings before Asp worked in relief and teenager Kyle Morrison closed the game. “He’s still finding his feet here, so we only gave him a brief outing,” Asp said. “Our import last year, Jimmy Jensen, played against him in Europe and suggested he was a good bloke who would fit in with the culture of the club and can throw pretty hard when he gets fit and up and running. “He’s fitted in well, he’s got a good sense of humour, so the guys will get around him pretty easily.” Asp was pleased to see Morrison take to the mound. Morrison comes out of the Rams junior system. “He’s an up and coming under 17 pitcher,” Asp said. “He’s shot up in the last couple of years, so we just need to give him a bit of confidence throwing in senior baseball. “He’s got the goods, but he’s just got to start believing in himself.” The highlight of Newport’s batting was a home run to Jake Sinclair. It was Sinclair’s first hit of the campaign and it was one to remember. Catcher Dean Malthouse was the most consistent in the batters box and did a good job behind the plate. All in all, Asp was pleased with the performance, with the exception of missed plays in the field. “We’re hitting well, we’re taking good at-bats, but we’ve just got to tighten up the defence and we’ll be alright,” he said. Newport (2-2) will hit the road to face

Sandringham – another 2-2 team – on Sunday. In division 2, Williamstown continued its flawless start to beat Mulgrave 4-0 at Greenwich Reserve on Sunday. The Wolves are 4-0 leading into a bye round.

68 MARIBYRNONG & HOBSONS BAY STAR WEEKLY \ OCTOBER 25, 2017

In women’s division 3, Footscray copped its first defeat of the season, going down 8-5 to Essendon at Boeing Reserve. The Bulldogs will re-load to face Doncaster at home on Saturday.

Footscray Hockey Club women’s co-captain Lily Brazel has been named in the Hockeyroos team for next month’s International Festival of Hockey. Brazel will be in the squad for IHF games against the USA, Netherlands and Japan, and possibly finals, at venues in Bendigo and Melbourne. She will also be part of the Hockeyroos squad for a three-match test series against Japan in Adelaide following the IHF. Brazel was earmarked as a potential Hockeyroo when she was selected for an Australian development squad that toured Japan. Her strong performances for Victoria in the Australian Hockey League drew even more attention to her ability. “Lily has impressed during the camp at the start of the year,” Hockeyroos coach Paul Gaudoin said. “She had a very strong Development Tour of Japan and backed up with her performances with the winning Victorian team at the AHL in Perth.” If Brazel does run on for the national team at the IHF, she will become only the second Footscray player in history to feature in an open age international match for Australia. You have to go back to the 1950s for the last Bulldogs player to represent Australia when Bob Acton had a five year Kookaburras career. Lance Jenkinson
