An investigation found the Western Institute suffered from a shortage of trainers, resources, facilities and equipment, had poor assessment procedures and used trainers without appropriate qualifications, according to Fairfax Media. Cr Khan recently spent about $50 million on land in Rockbank. The cancellation of his institute’s registration compounded a troubling week for Cr Khan, who was banned from Wyndham council affairs and duties for four weeks for breaching the councillor code of conduct. The Local Government Investigations and Compliance Inspectorate last month filed nine charges against Cr Khan relating to alleged disclosure failures and failure to submit returns. An ASQA spokesman said on Tuesday Cr Khan was yet to seek a review of the authority’s decision, leaving a cloud over the immediate future of 755 students. Should the institute not seek a review of ASQA’s decision, it will be required to transition its students to a new provider.

The operator of a Maidstone training institute says he will appeal against the forced closure of the campus. Intaj Khan, founder of the Western Institute of Technology, is seeking legal advice after the national regulator of vocational education and training stripped the institute of its registration as a provider of VET services. The Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA) last week announced it was cancelling the registration of Western Institute of Technology Pty Ltd, founded in 2008. The institute’s website claims it is one of the state’s largest education institutions, with about 50 staff and more than 750 students, mostly international across campuses in South Melbourne, Dandenong and Maidstone. It charges up to $10,000 per student for courses in business, leadership, painting and decorating, and building and construction. In 2015 it was penalised more than $10,000 and banned for three years from bringing over foreign workers after authorities uncovered multiple violations of the 457 working visa scheme. Mr Khan, a Wyndham councillor, was tight-lipped about the fate of the institute, staff and students when contacted by Star Weekly. But he confirmed he would be seeking to appeal the cancellation, due to take effect from October 12 following a long period of scrutiny by the regulator. ASQA contends that the provider has not operated consistently with the requirements of the VET Quality Framework, which is a condition of

Pier pressure for Altona units By Goya Dmytryshchak A block of three 1960s units in Altona’s Pier Street is being sold for the first time as one lot and is expected to reap a windfall for the family who owns them. The three two-bedders at 123 Pier Street, built by the late Paul Said, are being sold as one title by an expressions of interest campaign closing October 16. They are the last original units in Pier Street built by the vendor’s family. Selling agent Rick Massese of P. Di Natale at Werribee, said there had been strong interest in
the block, which has the potential to become a six-storey commercial and residential building. “They belong to a local family. The father built those units many years ago and now both sets of parents are no longer with us and the three kids have inherited the property … they are looking at placing it on the market,” he said. “The property will be sold in the current condition as it is. “It’s not being sold with plans or permits … it’s being sold as a three-unit site in the heart of Pier Street that’s got enormous residual value.” Mr Massese said the site, between Finnish Hall and Pier Street Medical Centre, could be
rezoned for higher-density development with commercial on the ground floor. “If you look at the main street now, it could be specialty, it could be consulting rooms, it could be food and beverage … obviously anything of a commercial nature would suit,” he said. “Given the location of the property and given the transformation that Altona has had in the past five to six years, just given the development in Pier Street, it’s basically an opportunity that you probably won’t find in the future anymore, maximised to take in the beach, cafe dining and you’re only 15 minutes from the Melbourne CBD.”
Mad scramble for the west’s Tigers Deep in Western Bulldogs territory, some ravenous Tigers are on the prowl. Bedecked in black and gold, they can be picked out by their confused yet joyous looks of jubilation and disbelief after 35 long years in the grand final wilderness. While they come in every stripe and from every walk of life, they are united in their longing to join the roar at the MCG as their team breaks through the grand final banner. They are among the 75,000 Richmond Tigers members who scrambled for just 17,000 tickets allocated to club fans. The long and pain-riddled march to the grand final forced Tigers die-hard Dan Bentley to cut short a stint volunteering in a village deep in the Amazon jungle. The Kingsville resident forked out $3000 for a last-minute flight back to Melbourne this week before he had even secured an elusive ticket to the game. “I have been travelling for about seven months – the Tigers weren’t doing so well last year, so I thought it would be safe to go overseas,” he said. “When I tell people over here that I’m flying home for this game, they are like, ‘Are you crazy?’ But if I tell someone I know they totally get it.” Just before boarding the flight, Mr Bentley found out he had emerged from the member ballot with a precious ticket to the game. “They’re bad seats right up the back behind the goals, but we are there and that’s what counts,” he said with glee. Tigers tragic John Carr, who lives a drop punt from Whitten Oval in Footscray, is one of the lucky few to have a ticket sewn up thanks to his priority club membership. Yet the fifth-generation supporter – who even named one of his three children Richmond – is tortured by the possibility his daughter, Molly, may miss out. Mr Carr and Molly, 10, have spent six years watching nearly every game together and deliver their own AFL-themed podcast, Dad & Mog Footy Pod.
A school trip to Vietnam meant Molly just missed seeing Saturday night’s emphatic preliminary final win over the Greater Western Sydney Giants. “She was pretty gutted not to be here,” Mr Carr said. He is seriously contemplating relinquishing his ticket so the pair can be together, watching on TV at another venue, as their beloved Tigers take the field. “I’m torn about it,” he said. “Is it more important to be there or to be with her? “It’s going to be a bit of a mad rush to see what we can do to get her there.” Benjamin Millar

Kill conviction overturned

The man convicted of killing his partner’s two-year-old daughter by stomping on her has been acquitted of the crime. Mussie Debresay was last year sentenced to 11 years jail for killing the toddler in his Footscray unit in May 2005. A Supreme Court jury accepted that Mr Debresay had stomped on the girl’s abdomen after she urinated on his couch. She died of internal injuries. On Thursday, three Court of Appeal judges overturned Mr Debresay’s manslaughter conviction. The little girl, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was the daughter of Mr Debresay’s partner. Evidence from the girl’s brother, who was four years old when the death occurred, was crucial in Mr Debresay’s trial. But Court of Appeal justices, Phillip Priest, David Beach and Stephen Kaye, AM, said the brother’s evidence was unreliable and the jury could not have found Mr Debresay guilty beyond reasonable doubt. They said the jury could not have concluded whether Mr Debresay or the toddler’s mother killed her, based on her son’s evidence. Mr Debresay walked free from prison last Thursday. Mr Debresay maintained his innocence throughout his trial, telling police that the toddler had fallen in his living room that night. MP retires, Labor troops jostle By Benjamin Millar Footscray will have a new member of state Parliament after the next election following Marsha Thomson’s decision to end her long run in politics. The Labor MP entered Parliament via the upper house in 1999 and has held the safe seat of Footscray since 2006. Former political adviser Katie Hall, a Footscray local, has emerged as the first nominee for Labor pre-selection in what will be a hotly contested vacancy.
Maribyrnong councillor Sarah Carter is yet to confirm whether she will run, but told Star Weekly she was seriously considering it. Ms Thomson denied suggestions factional in-fighting and Ms Hall’s decision to seek nomination were behind her decision to step down. “That absolutely has not been an influence – this decision was made long before any talk of pre-selections,” she said. “It will be 19 years … it’s a good time to go out on a high.” Premier Daniel Andrews said Ms Thomson had informed him some time ago that this
would be her last term in the Victorian Parliament. “On behalf of everyone, I want to thank Marsha for her dedicated service to our party, our Parliament, our government and all the working people across this state,” he said. Ms Thomson, Australia’s first female Jewish minister, said she was proud to assist local projects including the Sunshine Harvester Primary School redevelopment, Regional Rail Link, Footscray Hospital’s planned redevelopment and the intended rebuild of Henderson House Landing on the
Maribyrnong River. She paid tribute to her staff and called for her party to ensure a woman was drafted into the seat when she departs. “I’m hoping there will be a great raft of candidates who will run, but I would definitely support a woman being selected,” she said. Ms Hall, 35, had the backing of her former boss, former Gellibrand MP Nicola Roxon, when she unsuccessfully ran against Tim Watts in a pre-selection battle for that federal seat in 2013. Pre-selection nominations close on October 5.

A daughter of Vietnamese boat people hopes to raise the voice of the unheard in Victoria’s Parliament if elected to the upper house at the next state election. Huong Truong, 33, has been pre-selected to represent The Greens in the western metropolitan region following the decision by sitting member Colleen Hartland to retire. If Ms Truong retains the seat for The Greens, she will become the first VietnameseAustralian woman elected to Parliament in Australia. The mother of two, who grew up in Maidstone and Sunshine, said her interest in politics was sparked during her first job out of university, working at Centrelink. “It was during the Howard years and I was seeing first-hand the effects on people of ‘mutual obligation’ and the horrendous reforms that were introduced,” she said. David House offers activities and courses designed to support people with disability to become more independent. Road Policing Enforcement Campaign Operation Scoreboard AFLGrand Final Holiday Weekend 2017 Operation Scoreboard (AFL Grand Final long weekend from Thursday 28th September to Sunday 31st September 2017) is identified as a period of potentially high risk to the Victorian community in terms of exposure to road trauma. Westgate Highway Patrol Acting Senior Sergeant Marty Wallace said the AFL Grand Final public holiday on Friday 29th September 2017 provides an opportunity for families to free themselves from their usual commitments and it is anticipated that large numbers of people will use Victorian roads, often driving long distances in unfamiliar driving conditions. The times of highest risk are when people are leaving for holiday destinations and returning home. Police will be targeting the main causes of fatalities and serious injuries in crashes which are: • Excessive speed • Driver distraction • Restraint non-compliance • Fatigue • Impaired driving (Alcohol and/or Drug) Motorists are requested to stay within the speed limit, don’t drink alcohol or take drugs and drive, leave your mobile phone out of reach, wear your seatbelt/child restraints and make sure you are well rested. Speed Cameras will be rostered in known high collision locations. Fatigue is one of the biggest killers on Victorian roads. Drivers are requested to plan their trip, be patient and ensure that you take at least a 15 minutes break at least every two hours and don’t drive if you are tired. Drivers planning to travel during this period can expect to see an increase in vehicles travelling on our major Freeways and Highways throughout the State. Road trauma isn’t just about the people who die – it’s about the enormous impact on the community, from the family members, to the emergency services workers who have to deal with these tragedies on a daily basis, to the police who have to deliver the devastating news to loved ones. All of the community has a responsibility and a role to play in reducing road trauma. Remember, travel safety so that you arrive at your destination safely and enjoy your Grand Final Holiday weekend. Council Chairman Mr Jim Giddings said it has been demonstrated time after time that speed is a contributing factor in most road crashes. Therefore stay within the speed limit and drive to suit the conditions you face. Speeding affects both the risk of a crash happening and the severity of injuries sustained when a crash does happen. Mr Giddings said the work of his group along with initiatives like the 2017 Operation Scoreboard Campaign for the AFL Grand Final Holiday long weekend would hopefully reduce the number of serious road crashes on our roads. Overdose figures ‘a wake-up call’ By Benjamin Millar A drug overdose death is recorded almost every month in Maribyrnong, analysis of national data has shown. Australia’s Annual Overdose Report 2017, by non-profit organisation Penington Institute, shows that Australians are dying from overdose in increasing numbers. The report stated that 42 people died from an overdose in Maribyrnong between 2011 and 2015, more than 25 per cent higher than the national average.
Penington Institute chief executive John Ryan said increased deaths as a result of ice, heroin and prescription medication are an alarming wake-up call that more needs to be done to tackle avoidable overdose deaths. “We need better community education for people who are experimenting with drug use before they become addicted,” he said. The Overdose Report stated that drug overdose deaths were twice as high as the annual road toll. Since the early 2000s, the number of
Australians aged 30-59 who overdosed has more than doubled. Mr Ryan said insecure housing, expensive treatment and scant availability of support services were compounded by a punitive approach that pushes people who use drugs further into a cycle of crime and poverty. “We need to do more to give people a chance to recover,” he said. “Reducing barriers around medical treatment will provide many people who use drugs with a way out of a cycle of criminal activity and incarceration.”
Mr Ryan said stigma and shame in relation to drug use and addiction is one of the great barriers for people who are seeking help. The report follows a study released last year showing CCTV cameras have failed to reduce the sale or use of injecting drugs on Footscray streets. The study by the Burnet Institute, based on a study of more than 680 injecting drug users, found the main effect of the cameras was to shift injecting heroin and ice use from public toilets on to streets farther from the cameras.
Young chef a cut above Footscray chef Bridget Bottcher has scored a sizzling course win in Australia’s longest-running culinary competition. Ms Bottcher, 22, took home gold for her entrée and silver for main and dessert courses at the recent 52nd Nestle Golden Chef’s Hat Award national finals. Representing Victoria, the Crown Melbourne chef teamed up with Kimberly Tang, 20, to catch the judges’ attention with an entree of black and blue ocean trout, prawns two ways, chawanmushi, nori and cous cous sand, pickled daikon, fried enoki, black sesame puree and avocado mousse. While it wasn’t Ms Bottcher’s first visit to the national finals, the high-pressure environment still brought on some nerves. “But it’s high energy and a lot of fun and we’re very proud with the result,” she said. “Gotta be happy with gold!” Nestle Professional executive chef Mark Clayton said almost 300 young chefs from

New bid on storey limits By Benjamin Millar Developers behind a project rising 24 storeys above Footscray are seeking to add more than 100 apartments and push it up as high as 28 storeys. Growland’s original Victoria Square proposal at 4-8 Hopkins Street was for 939 dwellings across six towers ranging between 12 and 25 storeys. A proposed amendment before Maribyrnong council seeks to increase the towers to between 16 and 28 storeys, pushing the number of dwellings from 930 to 1066.
In a response to Maribyrnong council’s request for further information regarding the amendment, consultants Urbis noted the building heights in the Joseph Road precinct generally exceed the preferred building heights for the area due to ministerial approvals. “Accordingly, the heights proposed have been developed to respond to the prevailing heights in the area and to provide an appropriate transition to adjoining developments,” Urbis said in a report. Amendments also include an increase in carparking from 696 to 1075 and office space from 887 square metres to 3164 square metres.
The Footscray Riverside Action Group has raised concerns about the proposal, arguing the precinct is already far too high a density with little planning for pedestrians and green space. FRAG president Elwyn Davies said the group was very concerned with the application. “The original development plans were not in line with council policy, having previously been overridden by Matthew Guy when he was planning minister,” he said. “We have not seen any plans around traffic management for the current buildings already approved.”

A ruby in Altona’s crown Spotswood’s Jude Hanson, whose grandfather Thomas Miller once owned Millers Road, will help unveil a plaque on the 40th anniversary of Altona Gate Shopping Centre. From the late 1880s to 1950s, the shopping centre site was used for quarrying – Hobsons Bay’s first heavy industry. Mrs Hanson’s grandfather bought farmland at the junction of Millers and Geelong roads in about 1867 and her family lived for many years in a brick home on the corner until it was acquired to widen Millers Road. On Tuesday, Mrs Hanson – who shops at Altona Gate every Friday – will help the centre celebrate its ruby milestone by unveiling an original plaque mounted on a rock from the quarry in 1977, which will be relocated to the Millers Road entrance.
Centre manager Anna Graham said customers had the chance to win one of three rubies valued at $600 each by posting a photo on their Instagram account with #RubyBirthday @AltonaGate and a statement why they love Altona Gate. Altona Gate was the first shopping centre in the area and the first to introduce Thursday night trading in 1985. Hobsons Bay council has requested permission from Victoria’s planning minister to gain more control over where electronic gaming machines are allowed in the municipality. It comes as figures for the past financial year show there were $47 million in pokie machine losses in Hobsons Bay, equating to about $628 for every adult resident. The council is seeking government approval for greater planning control over: • Ensuring the social and economic impact of EGMs is not detrimental to community wellbeing. • Ensuring EGM venues are located, designed and operated to minimise convenience gambling. • Locating venues away from disadvantaged areas or vulnerable communities. • Ensuring gaming is not venues’ primary use. Figures for the year ending June 30 show Millers Inn Hotel was the highest-earning venue in Hobsons Bay, reaping $12,624,398 in pokies revenue. It is operated by Australian Leisure and Hospitality Group, owned by Woolworths (75 per cent share) and the Mathieson Group (25 per cent share). Cr Jonathon Marsden said pokie machines were “bleeding us dry”. “It’s important that we consider the aspects of problem gambling on our vulnerable community members because they’re designed by their nature to suck the money out of the pockets of the people who can least afford it,” he said.

New owners Emily and Mark Robylarz have thrown themselves into updating the popular centre. Emily, who was previously a finance professional, has put her attention to detail to good use. MY PLACE Seabrook family day care educator Keiko Takahashi has been named a regional winner for excellence working with children by Family Day Care Australia, the industry’s national peak body. She speaks with Goya Dmytryshchak. What’s your connection to Hobsons Bay? I live in Seabrook and I am a home-based educator with Hobsons Bay City Council. I have worked in this role for eight and half years. I am supported by the council family day care team and they help me in my day-to-day work with the children and families. What do you like about Seabrook? The street views, for example lots of trees and flowers. Also, the many nice parks, nature walking paths and, especially, river walks. What would you change? Point Cook Road traffic because it gets very busy and the parents often complain about it. At times it also affects the time of them picking up their children, and causes them to become late. What’s your favourite local cafe or eatery? Shelly’s Beach Pavilion, because it is a beautiful restaurant. During the day it has a gorgeous bay view with the water glistening and during the night it has a great view of nightlights in the distance. It also has wonderful homemade seafood pizza. I’ve had some great memories whenever I go there, with family and friends.
What do you enjoy about being with children? I enjoy being surrounded with pure and innocent children’s minds, because they are so creative, talking and playing with them is extremely enjoyable! They make me laugh throughout the day. I love that the children are not judgemental, and it makes me feel very comfortable. They are so sweet, and their natures are so lovely that they brighten up my day. What’s something people would be surprised to know about you? I love doing ‘girly things’ such as going to beauty spas, and having high tea. Why did you come to Australia from Japan, and what are some of the cultural differences and similarities? I came to Australia in 1988 as I got the opportunity and thought it would be a great adventure as it was a very different country and lifestyle. The difference that I loved was that in Australia it seemed as though I could be free to be who I want and have a good work/life balance. The biggest similarity that I see is that people in both Australia and Japan place importance on their family. I take this opportunity to say, I appreciated this CBD and inner suburbs 2017 Family Day Care Excellence Award. Thank you very much for the families who supported and believed in me.

Wyndham Lodge: a place to call home Shirley Cockerill, 82, is no stranger to gardening, having come from a family of green thumbs. “My father was a landscape gardener, so I’ve been putting plants into the ground and watching them bloom since I was a child,” she said, adding that her children and siblings are also avid gardeners. A resident of Baptcare Wyndham Lodge Community, Shirley is currently involved in a project to revamp a courtyard at the residential aged care home in order to create a shared space for residents’ enjoyment. After asking the Wyndham Lodge staff if she could add a little greenery to the previously empty space, Shirley took it upon herself to ask other residents which flowers they would like to see so she could grow them – along with a lemon tree for lemonade. Shirley moved into Wyndham Lodge last year after her husband passed away and enjoys the social atmosphere. With Tai Chi and Zumba one of many classes offered at the home, Shirley has made a number of friends through these initiatives. “I love this place. I came here voluntarily after I lost my husband 12 months ago as it was getting quite lonely at home. I had a look at some of the rooms and thought, ‘This is where I want to be’. “I’ve met some lovely people here and the staff go out of their way to help. When I told them I wanted to garden, they didn’t say, ‘ok.... later’; they immediately looked into how they could help me.” Lifestyle Coordinator, Sharon Oats said the courtyard landscaping project showcased Baptcare’s best-of-care approach in ensuring Shirley’s sense of ownership and independence continued even after she moved out of her home. For Shirley, the project has also given her an added sense of purpose. “I feel like I’m on a mission now and I enjoy it because every time I have a project I really get into it, and having the other residents involved gives us all something to do and keeps our minds occupied,” she said.

BEST IN SHOW It’s show time in Melbourne so it’s a real pleasure to feature Cathey Visscher in this week’s column. Cathey is now in her 11th year of competition at the Royal Melbourne Show. It was Cathey’s mum who gave her an early taste for baking: “My mother is a fantastic cook, and all our lives has done all her own baking, cooking and preserving,” Cathey says. “I first got interested in entering baking competitions during a visit to the Royal Melbourne Show 12 years ago. I was looking at some of the fabulous entries and thinking, ‘I could do that.’ ” So the following year she did – and won third prize for her rum balls. Entering shows has since become something of an addictive pastime for Cathey, one certainly never done in half measures.

Use a recipe that is fantastic as it is or easily adaptable so you can change flavours etc without compromising the recipe. FB: What is your signature dish? I’ve had most success in recent times with a range of marmalades and my banana cake, which won first prize at last year’s Royal Melbourne Show. My three fruit and whisky marmalade was selected to go to this year’s World Marmalade Competition in the UK. It won second prize. The latest Somalian eatery to grace Racecourse Road is fabulous. Husband-and-wife team Abdi Mohamed and Amran Sean have crafted a thoroughly gorgeous cafe-style restaurant, with heaps of lovely wood and exposed brick. The welcome is just as cheerful and welcoming as the surrounds. All of which would count, perhaps, for very little if the food didn’t delight as equally. It does. It’s fully soulful Somalian tucker, beautifully cooked and at very, very low prices. I quickly ascertain that two key elements of Somalian food are on offer – the bananas served with main dishes and the soup. They are; our excitement levels soar. The soup is a very fine variation on a familiar theme – almost no vegetable matter of any kind here; just tangy, awesome broth. Despite the depth of the menu, the truth is – going by what we witness during our lunch visit – about 90 per cent of #Somali Eats’ customers order the same thing. That being the standard meat ‘n’ rice plate. It is to Somalians what pho is to the Vietnamese. So that’s what Nat and I do, too, choosing the lamb option. It comes in $10 and $13 versions. Ours, of the bigger kind, are perfect in every way. Here be perfect, epic Somalian rice, seasoned with cumin, cloves, cardamom, cinnamon and nutmeg, with currants and slices of fried onion,

SPORT Cyclists battle tricky road circuit The penultimate round of the Footscray Cycling Club’s winter road racing season saw riders tackle the exposed and tricky Sandy Creek circuit near Little River. A deteriorating gravel section and steep climb made the race to be 2017 club champion all the more challenging. Dominik Dudkiewicz, 33, the current road club champion, took out the A grade race in a six man bunch-sprint to clinch his seventh club title and fifth in a row. “The weather was too nice, hardly any wind, so Miles and I did the damage on the first run through the gravel and up the climb and a few guys got dropped,” Dudkiewicz said. “On the third lap we started foxing for the finish, still all together but the odd probing attack, but everything was getting shut down,
so my focus was just to chase any gaps and leave it to a sprint. “I got a gap of a few bike lengths on the others and got the win.” Dudkiewicz took a strung out sprint from Shane Ward and Upton. The B grade race was as much about strategy as it was about trying to get away from the bunch. A few serious breakaways were attempted, most notably by Graeme Cole and David Walker, but the last lap saw most riders still together. With breakneck speed one moment and a stroll the next, it was foxing all the way until the dirt section, where 16-year-old Williamstown lad Hamish Munro threw in an attack and had the bunch strung out. As the riders approached the climb, Munro
extended his lead, with John Mogavero, Walker and Mark Micallef in the chase. A few kilometres out from the finish line, Micallef caught Walker, the pair then joining with Mogavero and eventually the four were together for the run to the line. Within sight of the line, Walker attacked, with the other three scrambling for wheels. In the end, Walker provided a fast lead-out, with Munro gritting out a win in a tight sprint, holding out Mogavero by as little as 10 centimetres and Micallef half a bike length back in third. In C grade, veteran Colin Morris took home the trophy, while Tiernan Clark won D grade and Meg Rennie toughed it out to win the women’s section. Mark Micallef

Kennedy made a triumphant return to the WRFL this season by winning the Barry Priest Medal last week. While his Altona side missed playing finals, the former Werribee VFL player and 2015 competition medal winner in the Ballarat Football League capped a fine season by winning the vote count by four from a trio of Deer Park premiership players. Saadi Ghazi, the Altona coach and former Liston medallist, made a good point about Kennedy and a group of players in his era who missed out on being VFL stars because of AFL alignments. Kennedy played 28 games in three seasons at Werribee, but could easily have played more and gone on for a few years, but he chose to return to suburban football. There is a void in the record books of VFL players reaching 50 games because their spots were taken by AFL-listed players.

Charleston from Williamstown Football Club achieved a VFL milestone in the preliminary final, playing his 100th senior game for the Seagulls. The popular No.17, now a life member of the Seagulls, had a stellar junior career in the WRFL. Jack won league best-and-fairest awards four years in a row in three different age groups. Jack is a fierce competitor and at 25 has plenty of good VFL football ahead of him before he returns to McLean Reserve to join his Spotswood mates. Crusaders on a mission By Lance Jenkinson Western Crusaders have gone a perfect 10-0 during the Grid Iron Victoria division 1 regular season and will head into the playoffs as the raging hot favourites to take out Vic Bowl XXXIII. The Crusaders made it 10-from-10 with a gritty 14-0 win over Monash Warriors in the final round at Monash University on Sunday, setting up a semi-final showdown with the fourth-ranked Croydon Rangers on home soil at Henry Turner Reserve on October 8. Crusaders head coach Craig Wilson said the foundations for the minor premiership were planted last season, which ended in Vic Bowl heartbreak with a nail-biting 16-12 loss to the Warriors. “We’ve really consolidated all the work we did last year,” Wilson said. “All of our guys from last year are back with another year of experience under their belt with these systems, so it’s made a big difference. “Last year, we were trying to put the football knowledge into them, this year their football IQ is really high.
“They know what they’re doing … they know how to diagnose their problems and know how to read the other team.” Western Crusaders have not lost a game since last year’s Vic Bowl. The Crusaders have shown a real appetite to complete their unfinished business and secure a first title since 2007. Rather than being overwhelmed with disappointment stemming from last year’s Vic Bowl defeat, the Crusaders have looked back on it as a learning experience. “I thought we performed really well and came quite close,” Wilson said. “We shut them out on the second half and only lost by four points. “What it came down to was showing the guys that you only get a small amount of chances to make a difference in the game and if you don’t make the most of them, you run out of time. “I think the guys have seen how close we got and just said what can I do to put me over the top for next year, if I do a little bit extra, will it make the difference and that’s why I think the guys have been so good this year.” Western Crusaders have been strengthened

Clampitt has shown tremendous leadership qualities in his first season with the Crusaders. It’s no surprise when you consider he was a team captain at Idaho State University. “The guys respect him and he really adds some knowledge on the offensive line,” Wilson said. “He’s just got that American work ethic, turns up every training session, real quiet and unassuming and just gets on with it. “He’s a great role model for those boys.” Bennett has added muscle to the Crusaders defensive game. “He’s very big, very strong and he’s another guy who it doesn’t matter what you ask him to do, he just does it,” Wilson said. “He’s got no ego and just gets on with his job.”

Rams take the next step with new training facility Newport Rams are immensely proud of their new indoor training facility at KC White Reserve. The Rams invested time and effort into getting the project off the ground, not merely putting their hand out to the council for the keys to the building. “It’s really exciting and we know we’ve got a really great asset there,” Rams president Ben Portelli said. “It’s probably the best training facility for a club in Victoria. “We’ve already had a few clubs contact us to get some ideas of how we built it, how we designed it and what it took into account. “It’s a real credit to the guys that built it.” Newport would not have got the project off the ground without the expertise of the Hobsons Bay City Council. However, the selfless efforts of Rams members, donating time and labour, has given the training facility that personal touch. “We all have a real emotional attachment to it,” Portelli said. “The level of engagement from our people,
the level of respect people show it, it’s because we built it, we didn’t just show up and it was done for us. “We obviously got tradesmen in when we’ve needed to, but a lot of our club members are tradies, so they’ve basically done it with no labour costs, just a labour of love really. “We’ve built it jointly through the council, but all of our guys who are qualified have been on the job for a month and a bit and a couple of guys have taken two or three weeks off work to be there every day and get it built.” The new training facility means Newport can train year round and in all weather. There are batting cages and a pitching machine, while a gymnasium is being set up. And the new facility has been a drawcard for new players and an enticement for player retention as it prepares for the Baseball Victoria summer league division 1 season under new coach David Asp. “It’s certainly helped us recruit a couple of guys that we targeted and we have no doubt that it’s helped us with retention as well,” Portelli said.
“Even in our discussions with them [new recruits], in the early stages of construction, we had the footprints of the slab there, we had all the drawings, so we took them through what we were building, so we’ve taken the new guys on a journey, right from the start.” Newport has signed new import Riley Barr for the 2017-18 season. Barr, a right handed pitcher, comes recommended to the Rams by last season’s import Jimmy Jensen, who took out the division 1 MVP. “Only a month ago, he [Barr] was selected for the All Star game in the league in Germany,” Portelli said. “We have no doubt he’s going to bring not only talent, but work ethic and a personality around the place that will really compliment our club really well.” Barr will be entrusted with the starting pitching duties. Unfortunately for Marcon, he was delisted by the Tigers at the end of 2016 and moved back to Williamstown, while Lambert has continued to impress in his forward line role for the Tigers. “He’s probably had the biggest influence on my footy career,” Lambert said. “It was disappointing that he missed out, but I’m sure he’s living his dream through me now. “He’s got his life sorted outside of footy.” Former Spotswood junior Bachar Houli will also run out for Richmond. Falcons mix it up in the off season
By Lance Jenkinson Richmond forward Kane Lambert is preparing for the biggest game of his AFL career, but has not forgotten the impact so many people have had on his football career to guide him to this point. Lambert will live out his boyhood dream on Saturday, running out for the Tigers in front of 100,000 people at the MCG on AFL grand final day against the Adelaide Crows. “It’s pretty awesome at the moment,” Lambert told Star Weekly. “It’s taking a bit of time to sink in really. “It’s a little bit surreal.” Even amid the euphoria of Saturday’s preliminary final win over GWS Giants, Lambert was thankful to so many people who have made a positive impact on his career, in particular the coaches and teammates at the Preston Bullants, Northern Blues and Williamstown. Having missed out on draft selection following his top age TAC Cup season with the Northern Knights, Lambert made the move to the Victorian Football League, spending three seasons with the Northern Blues. In his third season with the Blues, Lambert started to blossom into the player he knew that he could be, winning the Fothergill-Round Medal for most promising young player in the league and coming fourth in the JJ Liston Trophy count. Lambert crossed to Williamstown in 2014 and took his game up to another level. In late 2015, at the age of 23, Lambert finally got his call-up to the AFL, earning a rookie list spot at Richmond. Lambert looks back on his time at Williamstown as being crucial in that process. “I can’t credit enough people who have invested time into me, all the way back to the Preston Bullants, Northern Blues and obviously Williamstown,” he said. “I’ve got some really close friends at Williamstown, but Andy Collins is a real mentor of mine. “I’m real fortunate to have had people like him and the Williamstown Football Club in my life to help me get to where I am.” It is another Williamstown person who Lambert credits with having the most significant impact on his football career. Seagulls midfielder Adam Marcon is Lambert’s best mate and the pair had parallel careers until 2017. Both 25 now, they played football and cricket together growing up in Preston, under 18s with the Northern Knights, were teammates at the Northern Blues and Williamstown and both made their way on to Richmond’s list as rookies.

There’s a new City West Falcons team taking to the court. With the Victorian Netball League season over for the year, a group of Falcons coaches and players has formed a mixed team, which is competing in the Victorian Men’s and Mixed Netball League. Coaches Josh Smith and Matthew Blomeley came up with the idea to put a team into the state’s top mixed competition, and it quickly gained support from the Falcons’ players. Smith is part of the Victorian men’s under-23 team, while Blomeley coaches the men’s under-23 state team. Smith said the girls were excited by the opportunity to play mixed netball at a high level. “It’s a premier competition for mixed netball and it’s great exposure at this environment for the girls, the game is much faster and you need to have good reaction times and it teaches the girls to move the ball faster,” he said. “We identified it was a strong competition which is why we put a team in.” Smith said the men, who all play in the men’s premier competition as well, would also benefit from playing a different sort of netball, with several Australian Netball League players part of the competition. The Falcons team has a mixture of Falcons players from the club’s championship and under-19 divisions. Smith said they wanted to give some of the younger players, such as Maddie Gray, Anger Akec and Majar Hikuroa-Betham, the opportunity to play against older players. “It’s good exposure for them, as a lot are older under-19 players and will be looking to go up grades,” he said. Other Falcons players in the team include Jane Cook, Kath Knott, Maggie Lind, Maddy Balson, Emily Post and Victoria Honner. The Falcons claimed their first win of the season on Wednesday, defeating Bayside Braves 50-48 in a thriller. Top results set up a rosy future for Western Athletics

Nardine Bainbridge is the talk of Western Athletics after a brilliant showing at the Blackmores Sydney Running Festival. Competing in the Sydney Marathon, Bainbridge finished the 42-kilometre race in a club record and personal best time of 2:50.28. The Point Cook resident came 39th out of 3567 entrants in last week’s event, seventh of all females and second in the women’s 25-29 age group. She was competing as part of the Victorian state team that secured a team gold medal. Only days later, Bainbridge’s club marathon record would tumble in stunning fashion. Brianna Bunworth bettered her record time with a run of 2:49.08 in the Berlin Marathon. Bunworth’s run was good for a 34th placing among all female entrants.
Closer to home, Western Athletics has completed a successful cross-country season. The club won four premierships, including the under-20 men, under-16 and under-18 girls and division 2 men. Cody Shanahan was an integral part of the under-20 men’s team, winning all six individual rounds to become the state champion in each cross-country and road-racing event, then securing the Athletics Victoria under-20 overall champion award. Alan Hammond took out this honour in the 60-plus age group. Western Athletics was well represented at the Australian Cross Country Championships. Shanahan placed fourth in the under-20 eight-kilometres, Ebony Dodemaide secured third in the under-16 four kilometres and Jack
Rayner placed ninth in the open men and third in the under-23 championships. Western Athletics team manager Phil Dunstone said the results bode well for the future. “Growing the open age group has been a key priority, with the view to being a premier division club in both the men and women’s competition,” he said. “Last year, we were runners-up to the mighty Athletics Essendon, but this year we had the team – through a mixture of young guns, division 2 stalwarts and some recruiting – to win the men’s division 2 premiership, which means we will join our open women in the ranks of the premier division.” Lance Jenkinson

Top Jet in rare company By Lance Jenkinson Stefan Radovanovic has defied the odds by winning the 2017 Barry Round Medal for the Western Jets’ best-and-fairest. Such a scenario would have been unthinkable for Radovanovic when he entered the TAC Cup season as a bottom-age player with a troubling recent injury history. But he made his own luck through sheer persistence and hard work, taking out the top honour with 204 votes, seven clear of Lachlan Fogarty (197) and co-captain Nick Stuhldreier (180) came in third. Jets coach Torin Baker said the win was an exciting one for the player. “It’s rare that you see a bottom-ager win a TAC Cup club best-and-fairest,” Baker said. “I think it’s only happened a couple of times at the Western Jets, so he’s in rare company.” Radovanovic was on a modified training program leading up to the season. Despite a limited pre-season, the 17-year-old managed to play 13 of the Jets’ 18 games with confidence, improving with every outing.
“He’s had a couple of years where he’d had not a lot of continuity with his football,” Baker said. “One of the things with Stef that a lot of people don’t see – he’s had to be really diligent with his rehab and the amount of stretching that needs to be done to make sure that injuries don’t come back at him. “From the moment he resumed playing footy this season, he hasn’t really missed a beat. “He just got better and better through the middle part of the season.” Radovanovic started the season as rebounding defender, but has evolved into one of the Western Jets’ best utilities. The Keilor product impressed with his ability to play on talls and smalls in the defensive 50 and was damaging with his defensive exits. “He’s around the 190-centimetre mark, but his ability to play on a variety of players makes him very valuable,” Baker said. “He played on players that were almost 200 centimetres and then he’d play on players who were 175 centimetres. “You look at a Ben Stratton at Hawthorn,

who plays on talls and smalls – he’s in that sort of mould.” As the season wore on, Radovanovic moved into the midfield. His run, carry and tenacity were a feature, complemented by his tidy ball use. “He’s got great run and carry and that comes through his speed,” Baker said. “He’s really hard to tackle – he’s just a strong body and a neat kick. “He’s got some really good offensive elements.” With another year of under-18 football to come, Radovanovic will undoubtedly be closely monitored by the AFL scouts. He will get one more chance to impress the recruiters this season when he takes to the field on Friday in the under-17 future stars game at Simonds Stadium. Radovanovic will take on the nation’s best under-17 boys along with promising Jets teammates Buku Khamis and Zak Butters. Jets top-ager Lachlan Fogarty will play in the under-18 all-star game at the MCG on grand final day.
The leadership qualities of Luke Hitch and Nick Stuhldreier have shone through for the Western Jets this season. The co-captains, voted into the positions by the playing group and endorsed by the coaches in the pre-season, did not put a foot wrong this campaign. Hitch took out the most courageous award at the club’s best-and-fairest, while Stuhldreier collected the trophy for most consistent. Jets coach Torin Baker said the pair had been superb. “For those boys, it’s good to share the job because there’s a lot going on for them when they’re trying to get drafted, doing year 12 and still growing as young men,” he said. “We thought sharing the captaincy worked well.” Another player to show good leadership for the Western Jets was Joshua Mould. The defender earned the ultimate praise from his coach by winning the coaches’ award. “He makes his teammates better and he’s a real competitor,” Baker said. “I decided on that award, but I certainly know all the other coaches really enjoyed working with Josh as well.” Mould had a spectacular bounce-back season after a year out with a lower leg injury. The Wyndham Vale product played in all 18 games and proved a headache for opposition forwards. Zak Butters was named best first-year player. The boy from Darley will be one of the Jets to watch next season. “He’s popular with the way he approaches his footy,” Baker said. “He’s a small but he competes well overhead. He can do some things on the footy field that few can.” Harrison White is one for the future, claiming the under-15 player of the year award, while Emerson Jeka claimed the under 16 player of the year award.
