Beats, eats for festival Reggae legend Bushman has been announced as the headline performer for Australia’s second Jamaican Music and Food Festival in Williamstown in November. Festival founder DJ Stick Mareebo said the singer, who last toured Australia eight years ago, would lead a bill of 28 acts at the day-long festival at Seaworks. He said international and interstate artists would join Melbourne bands, including local favourites Ska Vendors, playing ska, rocksteady, dancehall, dub, roots and reggae. A stage will be devoted to female DJs or “selectors”. “We’re going to have a stage dedicated to the queens of reggae music in Australia,” Stick said. “In Melbourne, they’re quite a phenomenon … there are up to 30 female DJs.” Stick said there would be more than 20 food vendors serving mostly Jamaican food, including jerk wings, curry goat and Ital Rastafarian vegan food. The festival will be on Sunday, November 12, from 11am-9pm at Seaworks, 82 Nelson Place, Williamstown. Details: jmff.com.au Goya Dmytryshchak

Warehouse bid to VCAT Residents and a developer at loggerheads over a major new warehouse proposal for West Footscray will put their cases to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal after the developer elected not to wait for Maribyrnong council’s verdict on the project. Star Weekly reported in July that CostaFox Developments had lodged plans for the redevelopment of a disused site at 25 Indwe Street to comprise 177 warehouses, offices, a childcare centre and restricted retail premises. CostaFox Developments argues that its plans for the 72,400-square-metre site conform to local and state planning policies and could “contribute positively to the Indwe and Cala street streetscapes”.

But neighbouring residents say the project will clog residential streets, increase the number of trucks in the neighbourhood and destroy parklands. Wefo Residents Group spokesman Julian Davis said a community meeting held on Saturday attracted more than 80 people opposed to the project in its current form. “This is zoned as a core employment area, but warehouses like these are not going to provide any jobs,” Mr Davis said. “They are basically glorified storage units.” The opponents are pushing for the site to be rezoned as residential rather than industrial, given it is bordered on two sides by residential properties and on a third side by Stony Creek. Mr Davis said meetings with the developer

taken the project to VCAT on the grounds of deemed refusal. Council infrastructure services director Nigel Higgins said the permit applicant had lodged an appeal to VCAT as a decision was not provided within the required 60-day timeframe. “Council is expected to make a decision … at the September 19 City Development Special Committee meeting,” he said. That decision and the reasoning behind it would then be considered by VCAT, but the tribunal would hold the ultimate say on the proposal regardless of the council’s decision. Mr Davis said residents are raising funds to join the fight against the project in VCAT. VCAT is due to hear the matter next January. CostaFox Developments did not respond by time of publication.

had so far been cordial, but had failed to substantially modify the scope of the project. Maribyrnong council officers have been preparing a report for consideration by councillors later this month, but CostaFox has

No last call for the Stags Head By Goya Dmytryshchak One of Williamstown’s oldest pubs will be serving beers for a long time to come, after a 10-year lease was recently signed. The lease on the Stags Head Hotel, built in 1887 and listed on the Hobsons Bay Heritage Study, had been due to expire in five years. New lessees Matthew Wynd and Michael Sneddon, the latter the publican at Williamstown’s Prince Albert Hotel, said the new deal would ensure the Stags Head would remain a pub until at least 2032. Mr Wynd said many hoteliers in

Williamstown were looking at development due to the value of the land involved. “The 1888 Bristol Hotel site, where 40 apartments are being built, is a prime example,” he said. “There was a lot of talk that the Stags Head Hotel was going to be developed when the current lease ran out, which was approximately five years. “The owner has agreed to extend this lease by another 10 years, meaning that an iconic hotel in Williamstown will be around for at least another 15 years, which is great for the local community.”

Mr Sneddon, who will be a publican at two hotels, said he liked to preserve old pubs. “It’s great to have a pub in the area stay a pub, and it’s really exciting to get involved in the Stags Head Hotel,” he said. “It’s a real locals’ pub, so having the opportunity to keep that going and put our own little spin on things is really exciting.” The kitchen, which has been closed since July, will re-open on Saturday, September 16. Teacher Cathy Green said children were encouraged to be superheroes to fight against bullying. “We just continually try to promote good behaviour,” she said. “Every grade has a buddy

Brooklyn plays, polluters pay By Goya Dmytryshchak

Designs on a fashion career A love of Japanese fashion and style has taken Caroline Chisholm Catholic College student Yan Ni Zhao to second place in a national design competition. The year 11 student entered the Wool for School competition where she had to design an outfit for her favourite musician using a minimum 80 per cent Australian merino wool. She came second from more than 1000 entries across Australia. Ms Zhao designed an outfit for Japanese performer Kyary Pamyu Pamyu. “She’s gone viral for her music videos and weird and strange they can be, not in a bad way, but really interesting ways,” Ms Zhao said. “I didn’t put pen to paper until about a week before the deadline, so I thought about it for a long time.” The distinctive outfit – titled Candy Candy – consists of a one-piece dress, knee-high socks, platform high heels and a variety of hair accessories, with almost the entire outfit made of wool. Ms Zhao said she was shocked when she heard how well it went in the competition. “I couldn’t believe my design was chosen so highly out of all of them, but I think I fulfilled the criteria pretty well. I’d like to keep designing after school, even if it’s just a hobby.”

Brooklyn Reserve has a new play space partly funded by a fine collected from a business prosecuted by the Environment Protection Authority (EPA). Brooklyn meat rendering company, Australian Tallow Producers was ordered to pay $1 million in fines and costs after being convicted of emitting a “rotting carcass smell” from its site three times in 2011. That included $200,000 to be paid to Hobsons Bay council for a community environmental project. The council matched the funding and created a play space in Nolan Avenue, which officially opened this month. Hobsons Bay mayor Sandra Wilson said the space, which includes a flower pod spinner and six-metre high climber, had been developed with community feedback. “As part of the project, we received feedback from over 60 members of the community about what they would like to see in the play space and the reserve in general,” she said. “The process included consultation with around 20 ‘play-space testers’ from Annunciation Primary School, who visited other play spaces in Hobsons Bay to provide feedback on what they liked or disliked.” EPA chief executive Nial Finegan said the company’s fine was one of the biggest collected under the Inspiring Environmental Solutions (IES) scheme. “Brooklyn Reserve is a great example of how the IES scheme has been used to channel nearly $5 million of funding derived from legal action against polluters into local community projects for the benefit of the community,” he said.

West Footscray rings in change By Benjamin Millar Residents are being urged to have their say on the future of West Footscray and Maidstone. Maribyrnong council is developing a plan to guide future planning and investment in West Footscray that will be the first comprehensive rethink of the rapidly changing suburb since 2008. The West Footscray Neighbourhood Plan will cover the triangular area bounded by Ballarat Road, Geelong Road and Ashley Street, with submissions closing this Sunday.

Mayor Catherine Cumming said much has changed in the area since the West Footscray Urban Design Framework was created almost a decade ago. “It absolutely needs to be reviewed,” she said. “VCAT has come out and said council has been too modest in its height limits in the area, but we want the community to come out and say what they want there. “This is the community’s opportunity to come out and put your wish list together.” The new plan will aim to cover land use and new development, sustainable transport,

community infrastructure and open spaces. It will include particular emphasis on the Barkly Village shopping strip, but will also address matters across the entire neighbourhood. Preliminary consultation earlier this year has provided guiding principles including “identity and diversity”, a “thriving village”,

“easy access for all” and “a great place to live”. West Footscray residents living south of the railway lines have raised concerns about appearing to be left out, exacerbated by the inclusion of an image that cuts off the suburb south of the line on the council’s website. A drop-in session will be held at Roberts Road Maternal and Child Health Centre from 5.30-7.30pm tonight (September 13). A community workshop will be held at West Footscray Primary School from 6.30-8.30pm on Thursday night (September 14). RSVP via wfnp.eventbrite.com.au

Book in for a fine night Book lovers are being invited to enjoy a glass of wine, a meal in front of a roaring fire and an evening with a guest writer at an event in Newport dubbed Thursdays by the Fire. This month’s guest speaker will be West Footscray’s Thuy On, books editor of The Big Issue magazine, which is sold on the streets by homeless and disadvantaged people. She will talk about her career as a book reviewer and her favourite books. Ms On will also talk about The Big Issue’s current annual fiction issue and how the short stories were selected. “My co-judge and I, Jo Case, were looking for a variety of styles because we wanted an eclectic range of stories,” Ms On said. “The short fiction, chosen blindly – out of 562 submitted – explored fundamentals about birth, love, death, and everything in between. “There’s one with a fantasy bent and another about the vagaries of fame.

“Guest authors commissioned included Matthew Reilly and Elliot Perlman.” Vendor Brian Crouch, who sells The Big Issue at Williamstown Coles will be selling the fiction issue on the night. The event will be on Tuesday, September 28, from 7-9pm at Newport Scout Hall, Mason Street, Newport. Tickets costing $30 ($25 concession) include supper and a glass of wine from Goodwill Wine. A Western Bulldogs supporter is digging deep to keep Jake Stringer in the fold amid growing speculation about the star’s future at the club. Doggies die-hard David Bowers has used social media to share a letter he has written to Stringer begging him to stay. “I am riting this letter because I love the Bulldogs and you are my faveret player of ever and I don’t want you to leave becoz I will cry,” the letter states. “I have sent you my poket munny so you won’t have to go. You are the best.” The letter included a $20 note, in reference to the 20 cents in a 1996 plea from seven-year-old fan Ryan Adams for star Chris Grant to reject a tidy sum from Port Adelaide stay in the red, white and blue. History showed Grant staying loyal to the club. One difference is David Bowers is not in fact a saddened seven-year-old, but rather a 53-year-old father of three. Mr Bowers insisted the plea was no less heartfelt. “It would be ridiculous to get rid of him, he is just a once-in-a-lifetime player,” he told Star Weekly. “He is the most exciting player out there.” Mr Bowers said the silence from the club and Stringer makes it difficult to know where the situation stands, but it was promising to see Stringer at the Footscray VFL clash on Sunday. “It shows a certain amount of loyalty and means he is comfortable hanging around the group.” Mr Bowers conceded 2017 wasn’t the finest season for ‘The Package’, but argues it was a mere blip following a stellar two seasons. The letter was posted on Monday, so Mr Bowers must now wait for Australia Post to play its part in ensuring Stringer knows his fans are willing to dig deep to see him stay. Benjamin Millar

Family fights for gran By Goya Dmytryshchak The family of a Seabrook great-grandmother is crowdfunding to bring her home from hospital. Maida “Peggy” Perry, 86, remains at Footscray Hospital after her right foot required an amputation squamous cell carcinoma. Her great-granddaughter, Mellisa Price has started a GoFundMe campaign titled “Help Peggy go home” to raise $10,000 for house modifications to allow her to return home. “Her two wishes were that she wanted to be

able to walk and she wanted to be able to return home because she’s adamant that she doesn’t want to be in a nursing home,” Ms Price said. “In order for us to actually be allowed to take her home we have to have the house in a condition for someone that’s lost a limb.” This includes having equipment such as hoists, bathroom modifications and non-carpet floor surfaces. “This all needs to be done while she is in rehab and we just don’t have the funds to do so,” Ms Price said.

“She’s only on a pension and we aren’t a wealthy family, so we are asking the community to help us get her home.” The campaign is trending with $2240 raised by 42 people in nine days and 640 Facebook shares. Peggy’s daughter Diane Price posted: “I’m not gonna let you go into a home mum, I made dad a promise years ago that once he left this earth that I would take care of you and that’s what I’m going to do. I love you.”

The future of the State Trustees will be reshaped from lessons from the past, according to chief executive Craig Dent. Mr Dent, who has published a book that promises to reveal the “intriguing story of Australia’s Public Trustees”, says the process of writing The Creation of Trust provided invaluable insight into the organisation’s heritage and social role. The deeper Mr Dent delved into the history of public trustees first in Australia and then the world, the more he realised the importance of their place in history. One thing that shocked him, however, was the treatment of society’s most vulnerable and the language that used to be used. “It was pretty horrific to see the treatment of those with mental illnesses or suffering a disability,” he said. All profits from the sale of the book will go to a public charitable trust administered by State Trustees. The Creation of Trust is available online via www.scholarly.info. Benjamin Millar

West gets behind ‘yes’ By Benjamin Millar As the ABS began posting the first of 16 million forms to homes yesterday in the survey on marriage equality, inner-west campaigners have taken their support for the ‘Yes’ campaign to the streets. Students, unions and community groups have also been out in force encouraging voters to have their say in the $122 million voluntary survey. Street art has been popping up across the inner-west backing the campaign, as rainbow-coloured posters flood shopfronts and house windows. Seddon Deadly Sins co-owner Chris Gooden, who has a giant ‘Yes’ painted on the side wall of his cafe, said the vote is a significant equality issue. “We want to maybe sway those sitting on the fence, but more importantly encourage people to open that envelope and send in their vote,” he said. “We are going to ask people to make their vote, then come down and sign their name on the wall showing their support.” Victoria University Polytechnic students from the Community Development and Community Services are organising a range of social actions in the lead-up to the vote. Maribyrnong and Hobsons Bay councils have reiterated their support for the Yes campaign, a stance backed by the Victorian Local Governance Association. VLGA president Marg Attley said the postal vote was an expensive and unnecessary step. “This survey is about equal rights under the law – the rights of same sex couples to get married,” she said. “It is not about religious freedom, freedom of speech, political correctness or the upbringing of children.”

Call to check for diabetes When Edith James was diagnosed with diabetes in 1994, she wasn’t going to let it take over her life. She remains active and involved in her local community, but as the convenor of a diabetes support group she knows there are others who may miss the early signs. “Diabetes can lead to eye problems, heart problems, feet problems, you can have a stroke or a heart attack,” she said. “There are so many people out there who don’t know they have diabetes, it’s good to catch it at the beginning.” Almost four new diabetes cases are diagnosed every week in Maribyrnong, and one in seven people in the west are affected by diabetes, compared to the Victorian average of one in 30. Associate Professor Neale Cohen, director of clinical diabetes at the Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute, said the higher rates of diabetes in Maribyrnong were due to complex socio-economic reasons as well as higher prevalence in certain cultural groups. “You can have type two diabetes and be completely unaware,” he said. “We recommend screening on a regular basis for people in high-risk groups such as if you have a family history.” The Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute has recently shifted its Footscray clinic to Paisley Street. Assistant Professor Cohen said by co-locating with community health organisation cohealth, it will be able to expand its research. Benjamin Millar

Gun amnesty hits the bullseye By Serena Seyfort More than 260 firearms have been surrendered in Melbourne’s north-west in the first two months of a firearms amnesty. Since the National Firearms Amnesty started on July 1, Victorians have turned in 2150 rifles, shotguns and handguns, on top of a number of bladed weapons, imitation firearms and ammunition. Melbourne’s north-west, stretching from the CBD out to Whittlesea, accounts for 269 of those firearms.

‘‘

It’s pretty much just walk in … and walk out

’’

- Grant Coppinger

Sunbury Firearm Supplies licensee holder Grant Coppinger said the shop had collected “probably a dozen [firearms] a week since the amnesty started”. Mr Coppinger said he wasn’t surprised by the number of guns being turned in, with most

being “old farm guns” that had likely been inherited. “There are probably still a lot more out there,” Mr Coppinger said. Victoria Police licensing and regulation division superintendent Paul Millett said that so far, Victoria’s amnesty results were the most pleasing in a decade. “These results are very encouraging,” he said. “This is more than 2000 firearms that would otherwise be at great risk of ending up in the wrong hands.” Superintendent Millett is encouraging

people to continue to surrender unregistered firearms in the last month of the amnesty. Firearms, weapons and ammunition can be surrendered to a licensed firearms dealer without fear of prosecution until September 30. Mr Coppinger said handing in firearms was a simple process, with no questions asked. “It’s a complete amnesty,” he said. “So it’s pretty much just walk in, place a gun on the counter and walk out.” To find a nearby licensed firearms dealer, visit www.firearmsamnesty.ag.gov.au

A change for the better Adults and children with a disability will benefit from a full-sized change table and hoist, installed at Bayfit Leisure Centre in Altona North. The Changing Places accessible change and toilet facility is a first for Hobsons Bay. It complements other accessibility features at the centre, including aquatic wheelchairs, wheelchair ramps and hip floats. Hobsons Bay council will also install a fully accessible toilet in time for summer at Weaver Reserve, opposite Altona beach. Seven-year Altona North boy Brodie, who loves the water, will no longer have to be changed in dangerous or unhygienic conditions. Brodie’s father Shaun Kelly said his 20-kilogram son, who has a neurological condition, would be in the water every day if he could. Like many families, Shaun and his partner Deanne previously had to change their son in

places such as the back of a vehicle or even the floor of a public toilet. “Personally, I used the back of our van,” Mr Kelly said. “That’s not too good as you’re going on in later years.” The facilities are for the exclusive use of people with a disability and their carers. Hobsons Bay is also the first Victorian council to introduce 24-hour accessible beaches at Altona and Williamstown, with beach matting and beach wheelchairs available for free hire. Council tracks tunnel progress The West Gate Tunnel Project is being rushed through without proper scrutiny and will unfairly impact residents living along the project corridor, according to residents and Hobsons Bay council. Maribyrnong council has also argued that ramps to the port over the Maribyrnong River should be wiped from the design and permanent truck curfews must be enshrined in law. In a submission to the tollway project’s inquiry and advisory committee, tabled on Friday, Hobsons Bay council acknowledged some benefits but took issue with “the adverse environmental effects of the project on local communities within Hobsons Bay”. This included its impacts on Brooklyn, Altona North, Spotswood and South Kingsville. “It remains necessary that the impacts on communities along the project corridor itself are acceptable. In its current form, council is not convinced the project will achieve this.” A submission on behalf of Maribyrnong council argued the promise of removing trucks off local roads is “a critical aspect” in favour of the project. “The truck curfews ought be imposed under an Act of Parliament to ensure that they cannot be lifted at the whim of the relevant minister of the day.” The submission also took issue with the state government’s Western Distributor

Authority giving greater weight to the perceived needs of the Port of Melbourne than the amenity of the Maribyrnong River corridor in pushing for new ramps over the river connecting with Mackenzie Road. “The council contends that the WGT could be implemented without the ramps at Mackenzie Road, consistently with the port’s long-term vision.

‘‘

Truck curfews ought to be imposed under an Act of - Submission Parliament

’’

“Such an approach would have the added bonus of not jeopardising the implementation of the council’s plans [for the riverside precinct].” A submission and presentation by the Spotswood South Kingsville Residents Group, tabled on Monday, labelled the Environmental Effects Statement process particularly hasty “for such an important piece of infrastructure”. They are seeking “proper scrutiny and assessment” of Hyde Street ramp options and a fast-tracking of other “transport” options such as Melbourne Metro 2, arguing the impact assessments on traffic, air quality, health and social effects need to be redone. “We are the collateral damage being borne for the overall net benefit argument made by Counsel for WDA”.

Victorian crossbench MP Rachel Carling-Jenkins has spoken of her anguish at discovering her estranged husband was addicted to child pornography while they were married. In an emotional speech to Parliament on Thursday, Dr Carling-Jenkins broke her silence on the toll his crime has taken on her family. She said she was shocked to find her husband Gary had an “extensive” collection of highly disturbing material. “In this discovery I viewed deeply distressing images which have caused me immediate and then ongoing anguish,” she said. Dr Carling-Jenkins told Parliament she and her son reported the crimes to police after discovering the material in February last year. Prior to the discovery she had believed that her husband had a mental illness and had tried to get him help. But Dr Carling-Jenkins said he had consistently thwarted those attempts to help him. “I want to make one thing clear; I had no idea prior to February 2016 that my husband was addicted to child pornography. “I had believed for a long time that he was suffering from a mental illness and I had attempted on numerous occasions to get him help,” she said. “Gary does not have a mental illness, his behaviours stem from something much more sinister.” She thanked police for their work in their investigation, but said her husband’s inclusion on the sex offenders’ register and a “sentence of a few months” was inadequate punishment.

RACHEL CARLING-JENKINS

“My marriage ended instantly and I left home the day I made that discovery and I’ve not returned to the family home since except to pick up belongings.” However, Dr Carling-Jenkins said her husband still resisted signing divorce papers. “I remain vulnerable financially and physically, fearful of my ability to protect myself.” But Dr Carling-Jenkins’ greatest concern was for the children. “Those little girls would not have been abused if people like my ex-husband did not provide a market for that abuse.” Dr Carling-Jenkins was elected to the upper house for the western metropolitan region as a member of the Democratic Labour Party in the 2014 election. MY PLACE Sixth generation Williamstown resident Patrick Walsh is passionate about preserving history. He talks with Goya Dmytryshchak. What’s your connection to Hobsons Bay? My family have lived in the Williamstown area since 1854, and have always called it home. I was born at Willy Hospital, married at St Mary’s and now we are raising our family here. I could not imagine living anywhere else! What do you like about Williamstown? I like how we have almost everything at our doorstep, from parkland to shopping, restaurants and nightlife. Williamstown also has a rich history in almost every direction you look. Everything has a story to tell. What would you change? It would be great if we had an independent cinema like Sun. Williamstown used to have a few cinemas, but all have gone now.

There are so many amazing places to choose from, it would be too hard to choose just one. Aladdin Kebabs are fantastic, as is Burger Culture, but if you are after a sit-down meal, Crowded House is the winner for me. We really are spoiled for choice! Why is it important to you to preserve history? I believe that making local history accessible to all is important, as there is just so much of it hidden away, forgotten, neglected and unable to be accessed by the general public. All of it holds a wealth of information about our past. Digitising it and allowing it to be viewed by all

(Damjan Janevski)

What’s your favourite local cafe or eatery?

will preserve it, as well as solve some mysteries in local folklore and genealogy circles. What are you passionate about? I am passionate about the arts. As a designer, photographer, musician and writer, I am always doing something creative, even if its as simple

as singing my daughter to sleep at night. Using my creativity for work is such an amazing feeling, as I can bring so much happiness to people in so many ways. From restoring an old photograph, preserving historical documents to designing wedding invitations or writing a children’s book for my daughter.

What’s something people would be surprised to know about you? It might seem nerdy, but I am an avid genealogist. I can often be found delving into the local records at the library to solve a mystery or get more information on an elusive member of the family.

FOOD REVIEW

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir revists an old favourite in Deer Park Consider The Sauce is facing a very busy – but happy – few Saturday hours. Kung fu class in Carlton from 11am to noon. A 2pm appointment in Toolern Vale for a frolic at the Dingo Discovery Sanctuary and Research Centre with some dingo pups. Do we have time for a quick bite of lunch in between? Of course! We pass by – for once – our regular Deer Park favourite, Latin Food & Wines, and head for Chef Lagenda. CTS reviewed this place way back in 2012 soon after it had opened. These days there are four in the Chef Lagenda family – the most famous in Flemington, as well as Deer Park, Hawthorn and Richmond. At the time it opened in Deer Park, there was a good deal of excitement in that neighbourhood. Since then, the Deer Park strip has bloomed considerably in terms of food – is Chef Lagenda holding its own? The answer is emphatic: “Yes!” All we’re after is a quick, simple, affordable and tasty feed – and we succeed admirably. Nothing much appears to have changed since our earlier visit – the bicycle is still on the wall and the service (cash only) is fine. Chef Lagenda may be ostensibly Malaysian of food, but it roasts, Chinese-style, its own meats. But we pass by those options and opt for some Malaysian favourites. Achar ($5.80) could do with a bit more spice and vinegary tang, but is fine nonetheless. We pretty much automatically give a hearty

CHEF LAGENDA Address: Shop 9-10/835A Ballarat Road, Deer Park. Phone: 8358 5389 thumbs up to any dish that involves cauliflower. Bennie’s koay teow ($11.50) is a superb rendition – significantly less oily than some we’ve had and fully redolent of wok hai. My regular curry laksa ($9.80) is, well, regulation. But it’s also very, very good. There’s a good handful of tasty, plump prawns in there. The plentiful chicken meat is way superior to the scraggly chook sometimes found in laksa. Best of all is the eggplant. I always eagerly look forward to the eggplant portion of a curry laksa. But sometimes it can be bitter and not very attractive to eat at all. This Chef Lagenda laksa has just a single piece, but it’s long, meltingly tender and 100 per cent delicious. In recent weeks, Bennie and I have discussed how prices have risen since CTS started. The days of a meal that covers us both for $20 seem long gone. Yet, here we’ve had a grand cheap feast and the total bill – including two mains, a side dish and two cans of soft drink – is $34.10. And we reckon that’s excellent. Kenny Weir is the founder of Consider the Sauce, the definitive guide to eating in Melbourne’s western suburbs – www.considerthesauce.net

CREAMY AND DREAMY It was the Facebook photo that got me. A friend posted a picture of possibly the most decadent dessert I had ever seen – a salted caramel tart. When I discovered it contained only six ingredients, I knew then and there that I had to make it. Perfect, soft-set, salty caramel; creamy ganache; and a biscuit crust – what more could you want? As you can see from my own photos, it turned out pretty well! Thanks to the Recipe Tin Eats website for this. I’ll definitely be making it again.

JAMES ROYCE, NOVA FM DRIVE NEWSREADER FB: How would you rate your cooking skills? JR: Average to poor. FB: What is your signature dish? JR: It used to be marinated chicken breasts, served with sweet potato mash and seared mushrooms, spinach and tomatoes. However, earlier in the year I decided to go pescetarian – and since then, I’m still finding my fishy way. FB: If you could only have one more meal, what would it be? JR: I’d probably want to go for a Mexican fiesta – lots of nachos, burritos and other south-of-the-border goodness. Pre-pescetarian days, it would have been a big juicy steak and a stack of chips, all drowned in gravy with a lot of mushrooms.

As always, if you have any recipes, tips or other info you’d like to share, email me at sarah@ howdypartnersmedia.com.au

FB: What is your favourite TV food show and who is your favourite TV food person? JR: I don’t really do cooking shows. I like how Jamie Oliver uses his profile and skill set to try to get people to kick some of their unhealthy eating habits. FB: What is your favourite food? JR: Mushrooms go with everything – but hey, if there are carbs involved, I’m usually there!

SALTED CARAMEL TART For the base, crush a 225g packet of sweet biscuits (I used Marie biscuits) and mix with 150g melted unsalted butter. Press firmly into a greased and lined 23cm tart tin with a loose base (or springform pan of a similar size). Transfer to a tray for safe handling and bake at 160C for 10 minutes. Cool slightly. To make the caramel, melt 100g unsalted butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Add 1 firmly packed cup of brown sugar and whisk to combine. Once it starts bubbling and the sugar is melted, pour in two 395g cans of condensed milk, whisking as you go. Whisk for about four minutes (until you see steam coming off the caramel) and remove from heat. Add 2 teaspoons of salt flakes and pour into tart base. Bake for 15 minutes. Cool while you make the chocolate ganache topping. For the ganache, microwave 1/3 cup of thickened cream and 150g of dark choc melts (in a microwave safe bowl) in 30 second bursts, stirring in between until smooth. Set aside to thicken slightly, then pour over the base and refrigerate for at least one and a half hours. Sprinkle with salt flakes before serving.

FB: What is your favourite drink? JR: Coffee. FB: Which five people would you most like to invite to dinner? JR: I’m tempted to invite dead people because I can eat their food. They’re hardly going to eat, right? I’m actually not interested in the idea of inviting world-shaping leaders or celebrities over for dinner. Just throw me with five good friends or family and I’m right! FB: Do As you always, have a kitchen tip for us? any if you have JR: Clean up as you go!

An innovative architect-designed extension has transformed this post-war house into a spacious family property with dynamic choices creating a great outdoor entertaining area, elevated to look down to its large backyard with established trees. All four bedrooms – three with built-in robes – have been restored with care. The main bedroom at the front of the house has a big walk-through robe leading to an en suite. The living zone is open-plan and generous in its dimensions. The kitchen is a simple design, with great storage, a glass splashback, composite stone benchtops and stainless-steel appliances. There is off-street parking for two cars. Around the corner from the popular Wemberly Primary School and near parkland and shops, this is one to check out.

The facade of this post-war bungalow is a masterclass in good taste, shared with two off-street parks and a picket fence before a concreted driveway. The main bedroom – first of three, all with built-in robes – is large, with plush charcoal carpet, four doors of wardrobes and a large period-window with plantation shutters. They have absolutely nailed the bathroom renovation that includes over-sized slate-grey tiles, loads of on-trend storage, feature tiling and a shower bath. The third bedroom/study features a restored sliding stable-style door, with cafe-style concertina windows opening to the backyard. Open-plan living, with a 2pac white kitchen set against black granite benches and a butler’s pantry, opens to large living spaces with timber floors and concertina cafe doors. There’s a large deck and a lawn for the kids.

YARRAVILLE 37 Ballarat Street, 3013 Sweeney Footscray: 9689 8388

Price: Contact agent

Nestled between period properties and literally in the heart of the inner-west’s lifestyle crown – Yarraville – this three-bedroom residence is perfectly styled and maintained, ready for those who want to be in the centre of it all. The early Federation-style facade, with its multi-gabled pavilion roofline and inviting front deck, would have most believing it was, in fact, an original Federation-era build. It is not. Built by the founder of Harkaway Homes as his city residence, no expense was spared in the fit-out. It was recently renovated to reflect a more contemporary

Auction: September 23 at 11am

style, the result being a comfortable and stylish inner-city residence with nothing left to be done. Three metre-high ceilings instantly create a sense of space. The hallway on entry has hardwood floors. Here, two archways lead to a sitting room to the right and the L-shaped living room to the left. Plush wool pile feels soft underfoot as you walk through rooms flooded with light. Dado timber panelling in the main rooms looks chic. Three carpeted bedrooms have built-in

robes, the main bedroom with a walk-in robe with sensor light plus an en suite. The main bathroom has a bath and separate shower. Walk down a small hall with multi-door storage to the living zone. Windows featuring lead light and solid, exposed timber frames are tasteful choices. There is a dedicated study space with hardwood flooring off from the main living room that looks out to restaurants across the street. The kitchen and meals area is large, bright and high-spec with hardwood floorboards. White Ceasarstone benchtops

sit atop white cabinetry and there is a 900mm Smeg oven with gas cooktop. A full butler’s pantry with sensor lighting is a great addition. Here the fridge and all appliances fit easily, keeping things neat and tidy. French doors open to the courtyard with brick paving, doubling as off-street parking for two cars. From here, it’s a two-minute stroll to the Sun Theatre and all flavours that Yarraville eateries offer. Samantha Freestone

MOTOR

CX-3 destined to remain a fave By Derek Ogden, Marque Motoring

AT A GLANCE

If cars were creatures, the Mazda CX-3 would be a lady beetle, with distinct shape and standout colouring, buzzing around lush green meadows or summer gardens in full bloom. However, forget the bucolic backdrop – this pretty little sports utility vehicle is most at home in bustling urban centres. So much so it has become a market leader since it first came to Australia in March, 2015. Following in the tracks of the Mazda2 light car, addition of i-Activsense safety technology makes the latest CX-3 update the first vehicle in the small SUV segment to offer smart city brake support forward and reverse as standard equipment across the range of Neo, Maxx, sTouring and Akari models. Further safety inclusions are blind spot monitoring and rear cross traffic alert as standard on the Maxx, while sTouring and Akari variants also get driver attention alert and traffic sign recognition. Power comes courtesy of a 2.0-litre Skyactiv-G petrol or a 1.5-litre Skyactiv-D diesel engine mated with a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission with a choice of front or all-wheel drive. Prices start at $20,490, plus on-road costs, for the petrol Neo. The test vehicle was a 2.0-litre petrol Maxx automatic AWD, which comes to market at $26,890. Based on Mazda2 hatchback underpinnings, the CX-3 holds firm to the maker’s Kodo Soul of Motion styling, with the body flowing from a sturdy front, through a sleek centre section to a robust rear end. Headlight layouts vary from model to model, with the test Maxx favouring a layout that puts the turn signals outside the main headlamp unit to create a narrow, sharp design.

Specifications Mazda CX-3 Maxx 2.0-litre petrol, 6sp automatic, AWD SUV Engine

Upgrades should help the Mazda CX-3 stay at the forefront of the small SUV segment. (Supplied)

Cosy but not cramped is the best way to describe the CX-3 cabin, an opinion enforced by the limited views outside from a short ration of glass all round. Boot space, at 264 litres, is also limited, although, with rear seat backs folded, expands to a usable 1174 litres. The new steering wheel is a direct lift from big brother CX-9, with three levels of switches from the previous model being integrated into one level to match the way fingers move.

The test CX-3 Maxx took advantage of Mazda’s 2.0-litre four-cylinder Skyactiv-G petrol engine with stop/start. It was mated with a six-speed automatic transmission and had all-wheel drive. Sensors are always on the ball with road conditions, even when they switch suddenly, such as when the car drives through a puddle of water on the highway. A new forward sensing camera is designed to automatically apply the brakes in response to

someone suddenly appearing at an intersection or from behind parallel-parked vehicles while driving at speeds of approximately 10km/h or more, while rear bumper-mounted ultrasonic sensors help mitigate collision damage when reversing. Fuel consumption hovers about 6.4 litres per 100 kilometres on the combined urban/ highway cycle, according to Mazda. The test all-wheel-drive vehicle came up with figures of eight litres per 100 kilometres in town and 5.3 on the motorway. The not-so-sophisticated suspension lets the driver know when the car hits a bump … every bump. Apart from that, everything went smoothly with the Maxx, including parking in tight spots. The CX-3 has been the segment’s best seller going on for almost two years, and despite any shortcomings, without any deep insight into how buyers choose vehicles, I can’t see the upgraded version losing much ground in the near future.

SPORT Papal two for two with a medal thrown in Wind the clock back 12 months and Ben Papal would have laughed if you told him that in a year’s time he would be a Parkside senior premiership player and claim the medal for best-on-ground. Papal can recall his celebrations as a reserves premiership player in 2016 were slightly dampened after the senior team lost its grand final, but little did he know that he would be part of the redemption story. “I’m just happy both teams got the win today – that’s all that matters to me, nothing else,” Papal said. “I’m just rapt we both won and we both get to celebrate because last year was a bit different. “Tonight is all about us as a whole group.” Papal has a perfect strike rate at Parkside: two years and two premierships. The 28-year-old crossed to the Magpies from South Morang two years ago because he wanted a change of scenery. He can’t believe how well he has fitted into the club and the culture. “I’m a Parksider for life now – I’m not going

anywhere,” Papal said. “You can’t understand it unless you’re here. “It’s something else, I’ve never experienced anything like it, we’re tight-knit and the camaraderie we have with each other.” Papal was the most dominant big man on the ground. The ruckman gave first use of the ball to his onballers more often than not.

Papal was seen as the missing link for Parkside coach Nick Condos. “We didn’t really have a ruckman, so we went to him halfway through the year because we’d seen every side had a ruckman,” Condos said. “I’ve driven him really hard this year, given him a lot of instructions with the way we wanted to play and, to his credit, he’s worked on that and picked up a medal.” Papal has built a good rapport with the rest of the midfielders. The Mill Park resident has been like a sponge for information off Chris Muratore and Justin Dorward. “I’ve got good people around me that have made me a bit better,” Papal said. Papal was taken aback when his name was called out for the best-on medal. “Winning a senior premiership and getting best-on, it means a lot,” Papal said. “I’m happy for everyone, it’s not about me, it’s about everyone.” Lance Jenkinson

IN THE DOGHOUSE ■ There

were no fairytale endings in the WRFL grand finals last weekend, with Parkside winning the division 3 flag and North Footscray the victors in division 2. Parkside added yet another flag to its bulging trophy cabinet, and now sets its sights on the division two competition in 2018. Senior coach Nick Condos and an incredibly hard-working team of people behind the scenes have ensured Parkside survived to taste premiership glory again.

■ Burbank

Oval Williamstown was in perfect condition at the weekend and the weather gods were smiling. In fact, they were giggling, as the wind abated and the sun shone, giving the players no excuses for two days of much-anticipated local football finals. Sunshine made its way to its first division 1 grand final since 1987 by defeating Hoppers Crossing. The Kangaroos were well coached and very determined, and had a touch of class that Hoppers could not match. On Sunday, North Footscray dominated from the opening bounce of the division 2 grand final and won convincingly over Yarraville Seddon. The Eagles barely fired a shot as their opponents did what they pleased. It was a sour note for Dean Callaway to end his time at the club as senior coach, having lost in the big show last year as well.

Party time for Magpies By Lance Jenkinson Parkside has gone from ground zero three years ago to being Western Region Football League division 3 premier. The Magpies were on the verge of closing their doors in 2015 following a mass walkout of players after their 2014 division 2 flag. Instead of being promoted to division 1, the Magpies had to swallow their pride and ask for the WRFL to demote them to the third division. But that allowed them to re-group in times of uncertainty. Many people helped Parkside get back on its feet again and on the way to ensuring the club celebrated its 120th anniversary this year with a flag. But the public face of the rebuild was coach Nick Condos. Condos stood proudly on Saturday after guiding his club back to the premiership dais

with a 41-point win over Tarneit in the grand final at Hogans Road Reserve. “I’ve been lucky enough to coach about eight flags, but this is the sweetest,” Condos said. “It’s the club I love and played all my footy with. “I walked down that hill as a 10 year old and I’m 61 now. It’s something you dream about.” Parkside received stick for asking to be relegated to the third tier, but a club with such a rich history does not make that kind of decision unless it is a last resort. Condos took just as much satisfaction in Parkside’s reserves winning their second consecutive premiership on Saturday. “They’re a young side, so the club’s in pretty good stead,” Condos said. “We’ve worked hard off the ground to achieve this and obviously we’re still battling. You don’t take things for granted. “We know we’ve got a lot of work as a group to do and we’ve got people that are prepared to work hard.”

52 MARIBYRNONG & HOBSONS BAY STAR WEEKLY \ SEPTEMBER 13, 2017

Parkside was dominant almost from start to finish in the senior grand final. The Magpies opened up a 26-point quarter-time lead and it blew out to 55 by three-quarter time. Tarneit did have a little victory, winning the junk time last quarter, but the Magpies had the cup under lock and key by that stage. Only errant kicking for goal – the Magpies finished with 12.17 – stopped the margin from blowing out further. Experienced campaigners Justin Dorward, Chris Muratore, Luke Buttigieg and Adrian Gervasi led the way for Parkside. Brent Kelly (four goals) and Jason Cloke (three) were damaging inside the Magpies’ forward 50. “All the attention went to Jason, but ‘BK’ was nearly our best player after half-time,” Condos said. “He’s a super talent for us, his leg speed and ability in the air, he was really good for us. “It was a good team effort, every quarter, someone stood up.”

Saturday Deer Park will write another chapter in its history, and also for the league, if it wins its fifth flag in a row. Sunshine will give it everything it has, but there are no Hollywood scriptwriters here. I sense this may be the end of the Deer Park era, as the major players have little left to achieve and probably feel it is time to move on. That remains to be seen, but another flag seems a foregone conclusion. Kevin Hillier

Footscray coach Shaun Borlase is also stepping down, but he takes a premiership medal with him. Jason Butty picked up the Rex Swann medal for his seven-goal haul, but teammate Reece Duffield would also have been a worthy winner. There will be a changing of the playing guard at the Devils, with several players expected to put their boots in the cupboard beside their premiership medal. David Clonan, Kieran Murphy, Jason Butty and the Montebruno brothers (Tyren and Brayden) are not expected to go around again.

Devils race away with the flag By Lance Jenkinson North Footscray blew Yarraville-Seddon Eagles out of the water in an emphatic 58-point win in the Western Region Football League division 2 grand final at Burbank Oval on a sun-drenched Saturday. The Devils were in total control from go to whoa as they secured their first senior premiership since 2010. Devils captain Sam Kater has lived every minute of those seven years between flags, experiencing some exhilarating highs and devastating lows, but this will go down as a career-defining day for the tough-as-nails onballer and his teammates. “In my first year [in 2010], we won a flag, which was pretty awesome and I’ve been at the club ever since,” Kater said. “We went up to division 1 and [have] been through some pretty tough years. “One year, we didn’t even win a game, so to finally get back to where we are now is an awesome feeling.” North Footscray had to navigate the long road through the finals. The Devils finished the season as minor premiers, but slipped up against Yarraville-Seddon in the second semi-final. Playing an extra game might have been a blessing in disguise for the Devils, as they regained some momentum with a preliminary final victory over a competitive Manor Lakes. “We had to do it the hard way … but I think a good game against Manor Lakes last week gave us good momentum coming into today and it showed in the end, I guess,” Kater said. North Footscray was switched on from the outset. The Devils’ pressure at the coal face was turned up to maximum and their skill level was far superior on the day. Conversely, an uncharacteristic Eagles performance left a lot to be desired. They appeared sluggish and the only aggression they showed was when the margin had become unmanageable. “It was our pressure around the footy, keeping it in tight and not allowing them outside run or any easy forward 50 entries,” Kater said. North Footscray full-forward Jason Butty set the grand final alight in the first quarter. Butty would maintain the rage to finish with seven goals and the Rex Swann Medal for best on field. Tyren Montebruno was just as dangerous in the Devils’ attack, finishing with four goals, including three consecutively in the second

term. Montebruno had the fans in the main grandstand chuckling when he took a set shot from 50 metres out with one boot. He hit the post on that occasion, but it was a minor blemish in a superb performance. Butty and Montebruno were the beneficiaries of a totally dominant midfield, led by Kater, Jordan Lampi, Brayden Montebruno and Jono Miller. It was all about every link in the chain working for North Footscray and the first link was ruckman Reece Duffield. Duffield battled Yarraville-Seddon’s athletic bigs Jesse Varsamakis and Mason Angove and won. “He’s an absolute giant, Duffy,” Kater said. “Without him, we’d be screwed.” North Footscray is yet to officially announce whether it will ask for promotion to division 1 or remain in division 2 next season. “The committee will get together in the next few weeks and sort that out for us,” Kater said. Macauley Goring was best for Yarraville-Seddon when the contest was at its hottest, while Varsamakis and Chris Topalidis never stopped trying against the tide.

Butty’s best turns out to be a winner

North Footscray full-forward Jason Butty would have been content to walk away with a premiership medal following Sunday’s 58-point grand final win over Yarraville-Seddon. However, with seven goals to his name, Butty was widely acknowledged as the match-winner for the Devils, so he got the added bonus of the Rex Swann Medal for best-on-ground. That second medal could be good for a bit of harmony around the Butty household in the coming weeks. “It’s good for the kids at home,” Butty said with a laugh. “We’ve got two little girls, so now they don’t have to fight over one medal, it’s one each.” Butty ignited North Footscray in the first quarter and maintained the rage throughout. Butty and his brother-in-law Tyren Montebruno, who kicked four, were unstoppable, combining for 11 goals. “We’ve played a fair bit of footy together now, so we’ve got that chemistry where we know where each other is going and we try and keep each other isolated one-on-one,” Butty said. “I back him to out-mark his opponent and he’ll do the same for me.” In week one of the finals, Yarraville-Seddon strangled the life out of North Footscray, restricting them to under 30 inside 50s.

The Devils more than doubled their tally in the grand final and the quality of delivery was first class, giving Butty and Montebruno the best chance to wreak havoc. “The first week in the semi-final, we had about 26 inside 50s and we highlighted that we needed to give the forwards more supply,” Butty said. “We just really wanted to get the ball in long and strong today, back our forwards in like we’ve done all year and the midfielders did a power of work to nullify their midfielders, and once we started pumping the ball in, we had about 60 inside 50s, it’s really hard to stop when we’re getting that sort of supply.” Butty finished the season with the most goals with 57. Montebruno was close behind with 52. On grand final day, it took a collective effort from all 22 North Footscray players to overcome a Yarraville-Seddon side that entered the game as slight favourites. “It was just a good consistent effort,” Butty said. “We had winners on every line and when you do that as a team, when you have more winners than losers in each position, it goes a long way to winning the game like we did.”

Bulldogs out, Seagulls still in Footscray’s premiership defence in the Victorian Football League is over. The Bulldogs put up a spirited fight against Port Melbourne in the semi-final at Fortburn Stadium on Sunday before going down by 20 points. Bailey Williams, Lukas Webb and Patrick Lipinski were prolific ball winners for the Bulldogs on the day, but finding a regular avenue to goal proved more troublesome. Williamstown is the last remaining western suburbs side alive in the finals. The Seagulls will face traditional rivals Port Melbourne in a preliminary final at Fortburn Stadium on Sunday at 2.40pm. On a historic day, Williamstown will also play-off in the last ever AFL Victoria Development League grand final, when they face Casey Demons in the curtain-raiser at 11.30am. Lance Jenkinson

Footscray caps undefeated season in the best way A dream season is complete for Footscray in the Lacrosse Victoria women’s state league. The Bulldogs have gone through undefeated en route to their first top-tier premiership since 2013. A hard-fought 7-5 win over arch rivals Newport in the grand final at Treyvaud Memorial Park was the perfect ending to an impeccable season. “To go undefeated is amazing,” Bulldogs captain Sarah Mollison said. “I’m very excited, very proud of the whole team.” What makes the Footscray feat all the more impressive is that it came in world cup year. The stop-start season was split into two segments, but the Bulldogs never let their guard down. They went 12-0 in the regular season and made it lucky number 13 in the season decider. Mollison was impressed with the Bulldogs players’ commitment in the weeks following the world cup break. “It was an interrupted year for all teams in state league because of the players that went to the world cup,” Mollison said.

“I think the last three or four weeks we’ve been really focused, everyone’s been at training, we’ve had some Saturday sessions as well, more time together, more touches on our stick and just sharpening up. That was the difference for us. “That’s what helped us play the way we did today, the time we had together the past four weeks, just working hard and being really committed.” Footscray raced to a 5-0 lead at half-time. The Bulldogs even managed to keep Newport off the scoresheet with a player down for 10 minutes after a card was issued. Bulldogs goalkeeper Eliza Morgan played the half of her life. “She made some amazing saves, all through the game, but particularly in the first half,” Mollison said. “They tried to throw everything against her, she had quite a lot of shots against her, but she had a shut-out first half which is absolutely amazing.” Newport was never going to surrender.

With a fourth consecutive premiership in its sights, the Porters made a comeback in the second half, cutting the deficit to just one goal. Then came Footscray’s match-winning play, signed, sealed and delivered by three-goal grand final MVP Sarah Smith. Danelle Mollison will get credited for the goal that sealed the title in the last minute for the

Bulldogs, but it was Smith’s defensive ground ball win and exquisite pass that kick-started the play. “She won the ground ball with four players around her, looked up and passed it, we hit an outlet and then Nelly’s scored at the other end, which put us two goals ahead,” Mollison said of Smith. “She played a great game, scoring three goals and her hustle through the midfield.” It was Footscray’s 12th state league grand final in a row, but only its third premiership in that time. Mollison said grand final day has been “dispiriting” at times, but believes this win could be a springboard for sustained premiership success. “Hopefully this is the start of our journey of being a little bit more successful on grand final day,” she said. “We’ve got a lot of awesome juniors coming up, so we hope to get back at it the next year and the year after, that’s our aim.” Lance Jenkinson

Fearons hits peak form

City rewards loyal fans By Lance Jenkinson Only on the final day was Altona City afforded any breathing space en route to the Football Federation Victoria men’s state league 2 north-west title. City was a mere whisker in front of second-placed Hoppers Crossing for most of the season, needing to win just about every game they played to stave off the rival threat. For 21 weeks, City supporters were on edge, but a calmness descended over them in week 22, the day they clinched the league. Altona City was able to put the title in the history books early on in a comfortable 3-0 win over Diamond Valley United at Kim Reserve on Saturday, then just lap up the adulation coming from their fans. Across town, Hoppers Crossing never fired a shot on the final day, losing 2-0 to Fitzroy City, making it even more certain that City was bound for the title. It was the first time all season that City

could play their football with barely a care in the world. It was a fitting finale for a side that had been the most dominant and worthy champions in the competition. “You could tell the pressure was off,” City president Joe Tanti said. “The boys had been under the pump all year, we lost one game for the whole season and only won the league by three points, so it was tight all along. “But the boys didn’t feel the pressure as much today. They expressed themselves a bit more out on the ground.” Max Wright found the back of the net to put Altona City in the lead. Further goals to Ayodeji Omoboye and Marcus Sherif kicked off the championship party for City. David Taylor filed a best-afield game in his playmaking role from the midfield, but picked up a fifth yellow card that will rule him out for the state league 1 final against Eltham Redbacks.

54 MARIBYRNONG & HOBSONS BAY STAR WEEKLY \ SEPTEMBER 13, 2017

James Neighbour was again rock solid in defence, leaving goalkeeper Jack Dovey with little to do on the day. This was the time to fully appreciate the creator of Altona City’s joy, coach Andy O’Dell. O’Dell has totally shifted the way people look at City in under two years since he has been with the club. “Andy’s turned the club around,” Tanti said. “He’s come in and we’ve only had two losses since he’s been at the club in nearly two years. “We’ve been pretty spoilt with him. “He knows how to get the boys up each week.” In state league 1, James McGarry scored a double as Altona Magic ended the season in fine style with a 4-1 win over Essendon Royals that saw them finish eight points clear on top from second-placed Geelong. The Magic will square off with the south-east champions Langwarrin on Saturday at J.L. Murphy Reserve to determine which team is the best in state league for 2017.

Finals specialist Williamstown has advanced to the Lacrosse Victoria men’s state league grand final from third place for the second year running. The Fearons were the underdogs going into the preliminary final against minor premiers Footscray on neutral territory at Lower Eltham Park on Saturday, but came from three goals down at quarter-time for a 14-7 upset win. It keeps the Fearons bid for a premiership three-peat well and truly alive. Williamstown is preparing to face Camberwell in the decider at Angliss Reserve in Footscray on Saturday. The Chiefs have been the surprise packet of the finals, moving through for their first men’s state league grand final appearance since 1939. Fearons captain Matthew Price is wary of the emotion that will surround the Chiefs in Saturday’s final. “We can’t take them lightly,” Price said. “All we’ve got is a ticket into the grand final, so all the work is ahead of us.” Williamstown is peaking at the right time of the season. The two-time defending champions seem to be able to flick a September switch. Williamstown’s season was teetering on the brink at quarter-time on Saturday. Trailing by three goals, the Fearons chipped away at the deficit, trimming it back to one goal at half-time and then taking an unlikely two-goal lead by three-quarter time before a furious six-goal-to-nil final quarter. “We believed in what we were doing and ‘Damo’ [Damien Orr], our coach, just sort of said stick to it and we’ll get them back one at a time and that’s kind of the way it played out,” Price said. Williamstown’s win was built on the back of its rock solid defence. Fearons goalkeeper Evan Willis only conceded two goals in the final three quarters, while defenders Huw Wilson and Chris Welsh were impenetrable. Brendon McGuire led the way up front for the Fearons with four goals, while there were three each to Callan Gibson and Liam Clarke. Price also praised the efforts of homegrown youngsters Gil Cordell-Radford and Sean Clarke. “The reason why we’ve come good is on the back of all the young blokes,” Price said. Lance Jenkinson
