Archer aims for the top
(Damjan Janevski)
Pint-sized archer Amelie Cheung will be showing off her bow and arrow prowess on Channel Seven’s Little Big Shots this Sunday. The nine-year-old Seaholme girl is already a Victorian champion – less than two years after joining Werribee Archery. She’s broken four state records so far. She will be strutting her stuff alongside other gifted children from across Australia with host Shane Jacobson, who Amelie likened to a big bear. “I thought, ‘Wow’ – he was so big,” she said. “He was like a big Santa Claus, but like a bear.” On the show, Amelie’s targets include balloons and a tiny apple. “Normally, I shoot at 18 metres but to be on the show I had to shoot at 10 metres because that’s how big the stage was,” she said. “I practise three times a week, each time for one and a half hours … if a tournament comes up I will shoot maybe four or five times a week. “My goal is to travel the world doing archery and represent Australia in the Olympics and win gold.” The show will air from 7pm. Death defies a samaritan By Benjamin Millar
“She took my phone number and was going to give me a call the next day. My dogs were getting agitated, so I said I would take them round the corner to home and come back.” As he returned, Anthony saw sirens flashing and feared for the worst for Janet. “She must have gone straight back on to the road after I left,” he said. “She had completed what she set out to do. I was devastated when I found out.” Anthony questions why emergency services were not on the scene sooner after his urgent call to triple-0. “The officer I spoke with said he received a call to come and pick her up, but he was dealing with a drunk person and still had a couple of other jobs,” he said. “There were three cars there
when I got back – if they could get there after the act, why couldn’t they get there earlier?” Victoria Police will not specifically comment on the matter as it remains the subject of a coronial investigation. Spokeswoman Cathy Le said that if a person came across a situation involving possible self-harm, they should contact triple-0 and provide relevant details, including the urgency of the situation. “Police work closely with other agencies, including mental health clinics and hospital emergency departments when responding to mental health and self-harm incidents to get individuals help and support when they need it most,” she said. A good samaritan who coaxed a suicidal woman off a West Footscray road an hour before she was fatally run over by a semi-trailer is questioning whether a lack of police resources my have contributed to her death. West Footscray resident Anthony was walking his two dogs along Somerville Road at 9pm on August 21 when he came across the woman deliberately lying on the road in front of a stopped car. “This car had stopped and I yelled at her to get off the road,” he said. “She was saying ‘I want the car to hit me’.” Anthony rang triple-0, then helped the woman off the road and began talking with her.
“For the next 50 minutes I was speaking with her,” he said. “She said her name was Janet. We we were just talking about how she grew up in Yarraville and had been living out west all her life. “I didn’t know why she was upset – it was just a general conversation. I had my two dogs with me and she talked about how she had a little dog as well.” While waiting for police to arrive, Anthony managed to walk Janet down to a nearby convenience store, where she seemed to make a call on her phone and told him someone was coming to pick her up. “She had been drinking,” he said. “She said she was going to go to her mother’s in Yarraville once she sobered up.

Altona Primary a buyer magnet People moving into the Altona Primary School zone are helping to drive house prices up by about $120,000, new Real Estate Institute of Victoria data shows. Homes within the zone had a median price of $945,000 in the year to June 30, compared with a median of $825,000 outside the catchment. REIV president Joseph Walton said the data showed growing demand for homes near some of Melbourne’s best primary schools. “While homes zoned for some of the city’s best public secondary schools have experienced significant price growth for a number of years, we’re now seeing this trend reflected in primary

school catchment areas,” he said. Greg Hocking Elly Partners director Wayne Elly said it was a trend being witnessed in several suburbs. “In the west, especially, we’re seeing that across the board … also in Williamstown and Yarraville,” he said. “There’s a lot more new families moving into the area now and they’re worried about getting their kids into the public
schools. Ten years ago it wasn’t really a big issue, but all of a sudden the areas are [experiencing] re-gentrification … and people are specifically buying within specific school zones in certain suburbs – and Williamstown, Altona and Yarraville are definitely seeing that.” Altona Primary School principal Kevin Enright said people were definitely moving to be within the zone so their children could be automatically enrolled. “We actually get people from overseas who find the school on the internet and move over into the area,” he said. “I know people that are coming here and want to go to the school … they look at the zone and say, well, we need to go and find somewhere to buy.”

Conviction for pet groomer
An Altona North tradie is aiming to become Australia’s answer to Channing Tatum after winning a scholarship with the world’s biggest hip-hop company in Los Angeles. Ivan Krslovic has become the first Australian male to win a scholarship with the ImmaBEAST dance company, choreographers from which have worked with some of the biggest names in music including Madonna, Rihanna and Usher. He was selected after competing at the week-long BuildaBEAST Experience (BABE) dance convention. Krslovic, aka as Ivan the Aussie, grew up in Altona North, going to St Leo the Great Primary School and Emmanuel College (St Paul’s). About three years ago, at age 24, he “fell into dancing” when his best friend needed moral support at an audition to be one of Justin Timberlake’s back-up dancers. Ivan said he had worked 16-hour days as a painter to save enough money to train in LA. “Sometimes I did 22-hour shifts,” he said. “That funded my trips to LA, my training, and then I’d waste all my money, come back and do it again.” Ivan, who has played the role of a stripper on Neighbours, said Channing Tatum was his role model. “I want to be the next Channing Tatum,” he said. “He can just do it all – awesome dancer, actor. He can do a number of genres and has that versatility.” Ivan said his journey so far showed that a boy from Melbourne’s west could do anything. “A lot of naysayers, a lot of people on the job site were telling me to give up and keep working,” he said. “But I didn’t listen to them and made it happen.”
A pet groomer has been convicted over the fatal beating of a dog with a hairdryer at a Maribyrnong salon. Paul Rogers faced the Sunshine Magistrate’s Court on Monday on multiple animal cruelty charges over an incident at the Petbarn salon at Highpoint in April last year. The court heard that the dog died soon after the incident from the injuries. Rogers, who entered a guilty plea, was sentenced to three months imprisonment and ordered to perform 200 hours community work. He appealed the severity of the sentence and has been bailed pending the hearing of the appeal in November. The court disqualified Roberts from being in charge of an animal for the maximum 10 years. The RSPCA can monitor Roberts if there is cause to believe he may not be complying with the disqualification. The operators of the Petbarn grooming salon where Rogers worked immediately reported the incident to the RSPCA and Victoria Police. RSPCA prosecutor Daniel Bode said the RSPCA was able to put a strong case before the courts because of the full co-operation of the Petbarn business during the investigation, including the provision of CCTV footage. “We are appalled at the cruelty inflicted on this dog, and the betrayal of trust experienced by the dog’s owner who had left the dog in the groomer’s care in good faith,” Mr Bode said.

Renters want to shore up rights By Goya Dmytryshchak The number of households renting are growing faster than new owner occupiers in Hobsons Bay and Maribyrnong, according to the latest Census, as tenant and landlord bodies tussle over a review of Victoria’s renting laws. The state government is reviewing the Residential Tenancies Act, with possible changes to include restricting rent rises to once a year and banning no-pet clauses. Between 2006 to 2016, the number of renting households in Maribyrnong rose by 4381 to 13,542. In the same period, new owner occupiers rose by 1806 to 15,887.
In Hobsons Bay, renting households rose by 1734 to 9595, while owner occupiers increased by 497 to 21,860. Tenants Union of Victoria chief executive Mark O’Brien said protections for renters should be strengthened as Melbourne moves from a community of home owners to one where between 1-in-3 to 1-in-2 people rent. The union opposes bans on pets and tenants being evicted for repeated late rent, and supports tenants being able to make modifications without landlord consent. “The existing bond that tenants pay also covers damage caused by pets,” Mr O’Brien said.
‘‘
Legislation needs to balance the rights of both - Gil King parties
’’
“The Tenants Union of Victoria believes existing penalties for late rent are sufficient and that evicting people for being as little as one day late with payments would be unfair. “Tenants should be able to make minor non-structural changes to their homes without a landlord’s permission.” Real Estate Institute of Victoria chief executive Gil King said given the damage pets
can cause, landlords should have the right to consent to pets and charge a pet bond. He said it was imperative that property owners retain the right to terminate a lease agreement for rent in arrears and the REIV strongly opposed tenants making property modifications without consent. “More than 99 per cent of respondents in a survey of more than 3000 landlords and 200 property managers do not support tenants having the right to make modifications without landlord consent,” Mr King said. “Any future legislation needs to adequately balance the rights of both parties – not just tenants.”
A real tough mother Altona Meadows’ Allison Wooles is one tough mother. She recently won the Spartan Race in Adelaide at 20 weeks pregnant and eventually hopes to compete on Channel 9’s Australian Ninja Warrior. The 32-year-old completed an 8.6 kilometre elite sprint and more than 20 obstacles, including rope climbs, a weighted-sandbag run and barbed-wire crawls, with a time of 1:8:23. “If you fail an obstacle, you have to do 30 chest-to-floor burpees,” Ms Wooles said. It’s the second Spartan Race she has won this year. Ms Wooles will be 27 weeks pregnant when she competes in the next one, to be held in Bright in October. “I’ll race, but not in the elite race,” she said. “I’ll just have a bit of fun with that one.”

A timely reminder By Goya Dmytryshchak This month, Altona’s Alan Major will celebrate his 54th birthday. September is also Prostate Cancer Awareness Month and it marks one year since Mr Major was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer. He is urging other men to regularly get their blood checked for elevated levels of PSA or prostate-specific antigen, a protein produced by prostate gland cells. He visited a doctor because he was having difficulty going to the toilet. “Believe me, it’s worth the effort of going to the doctor and following up,” Mr Major said. “I went to the doctor for a check up and there were a number of things and amongst them was, go to the urologist, go to a throat specialist, go to another specialist. “By the time I got through the first two, I’d forgotten about the third.” Mr Major’s cancer was diagnosed late and had spread to his rib cage, spine and pelvis. He is now part of an international drug trial to test how long the return of the cancer can be paused. “You can’t be cured of prostate cancer but you can manage it, so the trial is to see how long you can postpone the reinvigoration of it,” Mr Major said. He said prostate cancer was a lot more common than people realised. “It’s like a secret society. “You start encountering not only men who have had prostate cancer and been undergoing treatment, but also a broader cross-section of society who are having chemotherapy or radiation therapy; it really is a secret society that you suddenly find yourself immersed in. “It’s in part a positive because you’re not alone, but also it’s rather startling how many people are going through similar journeys.”

Marathon pays tribute to mate Emergency services members enjoyed a warm welcome in Footscray on Friday after running from Mildura to raise money and awareness for mental health. The MFB, CFA, Victoria Police and Ambulance Victoria all joined the second annual Damien Burke Mildura to Melbourne Memorial Relay Run, a 653-kilometre fundraiser named after a decorated Footscray firefighter whose sudden death last year had a profound impact on Victorian firefighters. Leading firefighter and run co-ordinator Steve Axup said the relay was a great way to pay tribute to a colleague. “Damien was a committed firefighter, and while he was on secondment in Mildura he really blind-sided all of us and took his own life,” Mr Axup said. The event, which culminated with the Melbourne Fire Fighter Stair Climb on Sunday, aimed to raise $500,000. Lifeline: 13 11 14 Benjamin Millar

Walking into a new beginning By Benjamin Millar A group of western suburbs teens are in training for a gruelling test of mud, sweat and overcoming fears when they tackle Papua New Guinea’s famed Kokoda Track. The 19 young people will tackle the 96-kilometre challenge across rugged terrain next month alongside police from Melton, Brimbank, Wyndham and Maribyrnong. Sunshine Police Inspector Dave Byrt said the majority of the youth have faced significant challenges in their life. “A lot of them may distrust authority so the first part of this is building that trust,” he said. “If you can grab hold of a youth at the right moment when they are heading in the wrong direction, you can make a big difference.” Inspector Byrt said the program aimed to build social cohesion by re-engaging the youth with school, employment and community. The trips first began about a decade ago with police in Moonee Valley. “They were doing a leadership style program, we are focusing more on at-risk youth who may have had minor brushes with the law,” he said. “Hopefully it will give them a sense of meaning and build confidence.” Inspector Byrt said feedback from returned trekkers showed the true value of such an adventure. “They all have stated to a person that the program has had a significant impact in their lives,” he said. To help build the necessary trust and pave the way for the teamwork that will be required on the trek, Victoria Police formed a partnership with the Les Twentyman Foundation. Inspector Byrt said the foundation was already connected with the kind of youth they were looking to include in the program.
Teens in training to walk the Kokoda track next month. (Supplied)
“We brought them all in with their parents and explained what it was we are trying to achieve,” he said. “I would say 85 per cent of them are really keen and there are a few others that lack the confidence yet but they are coming around.” Training is already well under way, with weekend walks in places such as Brimbank Park already under their belt. “We are going to the MCG in a few weeks and will be marching up and down every step
there,” Inspector Byrt said. But nothing can quite prepare them for the heat, humidity, rain and cultural challenges that await. Inspector Byrt said these hurdles will all be part of what will cement the experience for those taking part. “We’ve got them out of their comfort zone, they are over there connecting with the Papua New Guinea villages, giving them a perception and understanding of how lucky they are in their lives in comparison,” he said.
As well as directly helping the 19 youths taking the journey, the idea is that the positive outcomes will flow on through families and into the community. Inspector Byrt said the police members taking part also relish the challenge. “Our members love the experience, what they love most is watching and seeing the change that can occur in the youth over there.” The team will be leaving for Kokoda at the end of next month.

Blindfolded audiences will be led on an intense sensory experience, able to feel, hear, smell and touch the performance, but not see the action unfold. Shaun Prendergast’s play is based on true events in the life of Julia Pastrana, a poor indigenous Mexican woman born in the 1830s who had long hair growing all over her face and body as a result of a genetic condition. She was sold into slavery as a child to be exhibited in freak shows around the world, advertised as a hybrid between an ape and a human, and as a “Bear Woman”. Peter O’Neill, Peel the Limelight artistic director and director of the show, said too many people are still exploited and abused almost two centuries later. “Our production allows us to start a conversation with our audience and raise awareness about human trafficking and modern slavery,” he said. The True History of the Tragic Life and Triumphant Death of Julia Pastrana, the Ugliest Woman in the World will be performed at Bluestone Church Arts Space, 8a Hyde Street, Footscray, September 14-23. Tickets $20-30 via melbournefringe.com.au or 9660 9666.

Leaders want new focus on west By Benjamin Millar A better deal for Melbourne’s west will be on the agenda when western suburbs mayors and council CEOs descend on Canberra today. Lobby group LeadWest is leading the delegation to the nation’s capital to meet with ministers, shadow ministers and the cross bench followed by meetings with senior federal bureaucrats on Thursday. Maribyrnong and Hobsons Bay councils are joining the push for a new agreement between federal, state and local government to fast-track
critical infrastructure development. Proposals include a Melbourne Airport Rail Link and better airport connectivity, improved housing supply in areas including the Maribyrnong Defence site and more investment in moving freight to rail. LeadWest chief executive Craig Rowley said with up to 50,000 people moving to Melbourne’s west each year, the rapid pace of change creates both opportunities and challenges. “Melbourne will soon be Australia’s largest city and the majority of that growth is occurring in the city’s west,” he said.
‘‘
Now it’s time for federal politicians to step up to the - Craig Rowley plate
’’
“Australia’s largest city cannot remain the world’s best place to live unless Melbourne’s west gets the services and infrastructure it needs to support this growth.” The delegation’s focus will be a new ‘City Deal’ – a strategic plan of investment for Melbourne’s west.
“A City Deal would create a mechanism for all levels of government to give Melbourne’s west the focus it needs,” Mr Rowley said. A policy priority document prepared for the meetings argues there is already a significant investment shortfall in one of the most disadvantaged regions in the country. “As a region we are here in Canberra with a clear set of priorities – now it’s time for federal politicians to step up to the plate,” Mr Rowley said. LeadWest is also seeking $50,000 in funding to conduct a detailed scoping study.
Centre built for unity only within Australia but internationally, the Al-Asr Society of Australia wishes to establish a centre fundamentally on the notion of unity and bringing together people of different races, religions, and creeds. “We are trying to bring all together – it doesn’t matter what race you are and what language you speak and what colour you are. Everybody is most welcome and we altogether are a family.” The Al-Asr Society is welcoming the community to its opening day ceremony on Saturday, September 9 at 12.45pm. Goya Dmytryshchak

Community leaders behind a new mosque in Altona North say they aim to foster interfaith and humanitarian unity. The Al-Asr Society of Australia will this Saturday officially open its centre at 2 Butler Road – the fruition of a dream that has been 10 years in the making. The centre has spaces for prayer, education, youth recreation and cultural events, and will also become a mobile donor centre for the Australian Red Cross blood service. Society founder Riaz Zaki said the centre would be a gathering place for the Pakistani diaspora and also the broader community. “By building the Al-Asr Centre, we hope to engage not only the Pakistani-Australian community in Melbourne but all Australians,” he said. “Under the current socio-political climate, where divisive politics, rhetoric, bigotry and prejudice are being felt more strongly, not

Residents in townhouse tussle By Benjamin Millar Maidstone residents are taking their fight against a townhouse project to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal, arguing the proposal is an overdevelopment of the leafy site and threatens a mature street tree. Suffolk Street resident Corie Waddell said a number of neighbouring residents were vehemently opposed to Maribyrnong council’s approval to demolish a house on their street to be replaced by three, two-storey townhouses. “We identified a number of clauses in existing council drafted and owned policy that
contradicts this approval,” she said. “Unique to this particular property is the significant coverage of foliage that extends to the boundary of the property in terms of appreciation and contribution to overall streetscape.” A town planning submission lodged with the development application argued the development will not adversely affect the character of the area. “There are numerous nearby examples of two-storey, attached multi-dwelling developments in close proximity of the site, which justifies this particular proposal,” it stated.
“The three double-storey dwellings on the subject site will provide for housing diversity within this area, as well as representing housing that would provide a high level of amenity for future occupiers.” Neighbour Siobhan Andrews said residents had been let down by a lack of explanation from the council as to why the development was approved. She said the lack of transparency around decision making meant residents had no choice but to pursue the matter in VCAT. Going in to bat for kids Altona North Cricket Club is crowdfunding to raise $30,000 so its programs and facilities can be enjoyed by a growing population. The club, established in 1923, fields four senior men’s teams in the Victorian Turf Cricket and will establish junior programs for girls and boys later this year to cater for an influx of young families with children. Committee member and former president John Dickenson said cricket in the Altona North area was undergoing a revival. “We feel that there is a real opportunity for us to specifically focus on the establishment of boys’ and girls’ cricket,” he said. “In the next few months, in conjunction with Cricket Victoria, we’ll be undertaking programs in schools in the local area to generate some enthusiasm and some activities in relation to cricket for primary school children.
“That will lead on to events and day programs at the cricket ground.” Hobsons Bay council is preparing a master plan for the club’s ground, Crofts Reserve. The club will run junior cricket programs in November and December. As the crowdfunding is being done in conjunction with the Australian Sports Foundation, donations are tax deductable. Building spray goes astray A driver whose car was sprayed with wet concrete from a Footscray building site is calling for stricter compliance with construction regulations. Catherine McDonald was stopped at traffic lights on the corner of Hopkins and Cowper streets on August 25 when her car was sprayed with concrete from the construction site of the new Riverina apartments. Ms McDonald said a number of other vehicles at the intersection were also sprayed. The apartments are being built by AZX Group construction arm Cenvic Construction Company. “When I rang the council to complain I was first told that it was not a council responsibility … then, only after considerable insistence, was told that council would send a compliance officer to the site and hurriedly palmed off with a phone number for the property sales company,” she said. Maribyrnong council planning services director Nigel Higgins said management on site confirmed a pipe on the concrete pump had come free during a pour on the 12th floor. “No enforcement action will be undertaken by council at this point,” he said Worksafe and the AZX Group did not respond by time of publication.
Dr Julian Nguyen takes a patient through the new technology. (Damjan Janevski)
Footscray in good health By Benjamin Millar Care for seriously ill patients has stepped up a notch at Footscray Hospital via new technology, the first of its kind in Victoria. The new medical imaging suite will help with treatment of stroke and trauma patients as well as those battling with deadly liver cancer, which has a five-year survival rate of just 17 per cent. The MIYABI Angio-CT system at Footscray Hospital is the first in the state and only the second of its kind in Australia. Western Health radiologist Dr Julian
Nguyen said the imaging system from Siemens Healthineers combines CT scanning and angiography, enabling more accurate and real-time assessment of treatment results. “While CT and angio systems have been around for a long time, what’s unique is the marriage of the two, which enables our team of interventional radiologists to go back and forth without having to move their patients,” he said. “Traditionally, if we needed both systems, we had to carefully pack our patient up and transport them – with all wires and needles in place – from the CT to the angio suite.”
The new system is able to target and isolate the treatment of tumours, ensuring minimal impact on healthy tissues. It is not only faster, safer and more comfortable for the patient, but also enables the hospital to take on complicated cases that would have been deemed too risky in the past. “For our patients, this allows for outpatient treatments as opposed to the need for more invasive surgery,” Dr Nguyen said. The new system has already enabled Western Health to boost patient treatment numbers by 20 per cent.

MY PLACE
What are your favourite local places to spend time? I love Advieh, 1906, Seddon Deadly Sins, Common Galaxia and Fig and Walnut; Copper Pot and Moda are special treats. Though really there is nowhere that disappoints these days. I enjoy going for walks along the Maribyrnong, or down to Williamstown.
A stalwart of the Seddon community, Pamela Mulready loves where she lives but would like to see greater awareness of the area’s rich history. She speaks with Benjamin Millar.
What involvement do you have with your community? I am taking a back seat now with the Seddon Festival and Community Group whilst I pursue a PhD at VU. I am on the advisory committee for Australian Citizens Against Corruption (ACAC), a non-partisan group hosting events on matters of public trust, parliamentary responsibility and accountability. I also provide respite care for Anglicare, Yarraville, and I assist with Safe As houses; so I enjoy mixing things up.
(Joe Mastroianni)
Who have been your biggest inspirations and why?
What is your connection with Seddon? I have lived in Seddon for over 20 years now, after taking up a position at Deakin University. Seddon was a midpoint between Burwood and Geelong and the lovely Federation homes were affordable. I also loved its proximity to
Melbourne, Footscray, the Maribyrnong River and Williamstown. What do you love most about the area? The community, the history, the arts, our festivals, markets, and cafés. The Seddon
Uniting Church is outstanding for its support of so many community groups, and events. They are unsung local heroes that have been an important part of this community for generations. I have also seen a great deal of regeneration though some of the heritage has been lost. I would like to see return of local
My parents and grandparents for modelling strength and resilience, great thinkers in educational psychology for their inspiration, and Jane Jacobson, who I have discovered recently, who was instrumental in stopping rampant development at the expense of communities, their environment and their sustainability. What’s something people might be surprised to learn about you? I am about to take up drumming again (I was in a drum band at primary school).

Ten minutes before the final siren of the 2016 AFL grand final, Yarraville’s Rob McCarthy’s heart raced as his beloved Western Bulldogs fended off the Sydney Swans. He turned to a fellow fan sitting in the MCG Southern Stand and joked that he hoped there was an ambulance parked outside the ground, “because if the Doggies win I’m going to have a heart attack”. Two minutes later, Mr McCarthy collapsed from a cardiac arrest. He was not conscious as the Bulldogs triumphed, but is alive to savour the victory today because an off-duty paramedic saved his life. Now fit and well, after having a stent put into a clogged artery, the father of one returned to the ‘G on Sunday, Father’s Day, to launch the Heart Foundation’s Big Heart Appeal. A grateful Mr McCarthy, 65, warned men over 40 to get their heart health checked with their GPs. The Heart Foundation released a survey showing one in five people wouldn’t know how to recognise a cardiac arrest, and 40 per cent would not feel confident to administer CPR. Mr McCarthy’s cardiologist, Heart Foundation board member Dr Nick Cox, said that in an emergency someone must be prepared to act. Even untrained bystanders could “have a go” at CPR and using a defibrillator. “You can’t make things worse, and you’ll probably save a life.” For every minute of inaction, a patient’s chances of survival went down by 10 per cent, he said. At the 2016 grand final, off-duty paramedic Liam Moore, 25, was barracking for the Swans near Mr McCarthy when the call went out for help. By the time he laid Mr McCarthy on the

concrete between two rows of seats, there was no pulse. Mr Moore performed CPR for four or five minutes before the defibrillator was administered. Mr McCarthy remembers sitting up on a stretcher as the players received their medals, asking bystanders, “Have the Doggies won?” and giving the thumbs-up as he was carried
away. Although Mr McCarthy had walked regularly and wasn’t a smoker or a heavy drinker, his father had suffered three heart attacks. And 20 months previously, Rob had suffered a heart attack at home. “It doesn’t matter how fit you are, you’ve really got to get yourself checked.”

AMENITIES Australia’s first elevated 400m outdoor track Sky garden of 2,400 square metres Retail and dining laneway Mark and Lola bought their apartment on the same day they found it.
When Lola and Mark started looking for somewhere to purchase their first home, there’s one thing they were sure of – no apartments. That all changed when they visited the Victoria Square display suite on a whim. “We were definitely sceptical of buying an apartment,” Mark said. “We’d never lived in one before and we didn’t want to be cramped in to something small. “We knew, though, we wanted to live in Footscray and Victoria Square Tower 1 [VS01] caught our attention. Once we saw the design and the amenities on offer, we were sold. We bought the apartment the same day. “Far from feeling like we’d compromised, we realised this building offered much more than we had expected and really converted us to the idea of apartment living and the lifestyle it provides.” Mark, who owns a café, says he’s looking forward to enjoying the local foodie scene. Up in Smoke, across the road from Victoria Square, is already one of the couple’s favourites. “I think Footscray is really underrated – the cafes and restaurants there are some of the best in the city,” he said. When the couple want to stay in, Victoria Square is perfect for home entertaining. “We love entertaining, so having the private dining rooms available for parties or special occasions is really exciting,” Lola said. “With all the delis and stores downstairs, it’ll be so easy to pop down and get some delicious food and drinks at a moment’s notice, which is handy because I always forget something!” Mark and Lola snapped up one of the last remaining apartments in VS01, with panoramic city views. With 90 per cent of VS01 now sold, VS02 has been released to market to meet demand. The tower boasts rolling views of the city and bay on one side, the Flemington Racecourse on the other. Full-height windows form living canvases of Melbourne’s beauty and admit streams of natural light to beautifully designed interiors. And each apartment in VS02 has its own balcony, from 8 – 29 square metres. By completion, Victoria Square will boast six towers and its own laneway retail precinct. While there’s a synergy between all buildings, the material palettes at VS02 are independent of those on offer at VS01 – for example, the accented linear feature tiles that reflect the bathrooms’ geometry where everything runs in a horizontal fashion. VS02 is fantastic for young professionals, couples and first-home buyers – and there’s a large range of bigger apartments ideal for young families. This gives Victoria Square a unique position in the marketplace: it will be a fully integrated community in Footscray.

This period-style unit is set at the rear of a development and offers family-friendly spaces. The fit-out of the property is quality-driven and the decor tastefully appointed. The two bedrooms both have built-in robes and are carpeted. One has french doors that open to a decked area, the other a sash window in keeping with the period influence of the design. The generously proportioned living and dining area opens to the kitchen which features NEFF and Bosch appliances. Enjoy the morning sun on the back deck thanks to a north-facing yard. Ducted heating, solar power, a single garage and proximity to Vernon Street and Hudsons Roads shops, as well as Spotswood station, add to the appeal.
This older-style low-rise unit complex in a good pocket of Footscray offers what most apartments don’t these days – space. All rooms are larger than usual, the kitchen with retro timber cabinetry that could be restored. There is a good-sized dining area contained within this area, leading to a carpeted hall and off to both large bedrooms which offer good proportions, retro detail and built-in wardrobes. The main living room has a mid-century style gas heater with a surround true to its era and there’s still the original pelmet ready-made for floor-to-ceiling curtains to be installed. There is a single carport. It all adds interest in what will be a really fantastic first home or good flip opportunity for the right buyer. Within walking distance of parkland and Footscray’s rich, ever-growing urban community.

WILLIAMSTOWN 40 Queen Street, 3016 Raine & Horne Williamstown: 9397 6167 Auction: September 9 at 2.30pm
Reserve price: $1.25 million
These original time-capsule-esque properties are becoming rare, but here is a good example almost un-touched by the march of time. The traditional orange brick, multi-gabled facade with large windows and a good-sized front porch set the tone from the street and inside its well-proportioned rooms and high ceilings add plenty of scope for renovation. The property has three bedrooms with built-in robes and generous living spaces. A low-maintenance gated rear yard has lawn and garage/workshop. Appreciate the ’50s kitchen with futuristic motif on the flooring, picked up by the lime-green shade, the floral ’50s-style carpeting or the ceiling tiles, cutting edge in their day. Located in the heart of village life, there is also off-street parking. Despite this rich history, development opportunities abound (STCA).

This smart and generous family residence is part of a meandering streetscape lined with natives and embraced by Newport Lakes Reserve. The house has a terrific layout, with four large bedrooms, two living spaces, a contemporary kitchen and a deep entertainer’s back deck with views of the gorgeous backyard. Hardwood floors and high ceilings create instant impact. The spacious main bedroom, at the front of the house, features a well-designed walk-through robe that leads to an en suite with a double-length shower. Two other bedrooms have built-in robes. The fourth bedroom, or possible third living space, is upstairs and is perfect for teenagers needing a retreat-style space. This room could easily be a rumpus or games-style room. Back downstairs, the hall leads to the open-plan kitchen and family-meals room. The house has been architecturally
designed and it shows in the sense of space and proportion in the main living area. A gas fireplace set within a mock-traditional surround in the living room creates a sense of home. It’s a great spot to sit and get warm after a chilly commute in the winter months. Bifolds open to the aforementioned deck. The kitchen, with timber benchtops, is of a good size and has stainless-steel appliances, including a six-burner gas cooktop, oven and dishwasher. The second living room is sectioned-off and allows for formal-style dining or

zoned-living. There is also a study nook and a powder room. Other features include heating, ceiling fans, ample storage and double-glazed windows. The grounds are beautifully landscaped and there is a grey water system and large rainwater tank. FOOD REVIEW
CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir has a crack at an old watering hole’s take on an American diner. One Friday night, and long ago before Consider The Sauce started, Bennie and I SOUTHWEST CHICKEN BURGER ventured into the Rifle Club Hotel, having heard there was some Thai food going on there. That turned out to not be the case, and we fled, figuring the establishment – then – was no place for a boy and his dad. Now we’re back after learning that a crew called Bob’s Diner has set up shop. Truth be told, this pokies venue is not a good fit for us, but we’re prepared to give it a crack. The dining room has been done out in basic diner style and, as expected given the name of the place, burgers are big on the menu. CHEESE AND BACON BURGER But there are also such items as poutine, chicken wings, fish and chips – and even a grazier’s beef pie with sauce and mash. The chips ($5) come in a good-size serve and are enjoyed by us both. My SouthWest chicken burger ($12) is an enigma. Bun, coleslaw, briny pickle all good. The chicken is crumbed and crisp. But tastes of nothing. Is it re-constituted like a chicken nugget? I can’t tell, but it disappoints. Bennie does a whole lot better with his cheese and bacon burger ($12). BOB’S DINER @ RIFLE CLUB HOTEL This is a good, solid burger that is priced Address: 121 Victoria Street, Williamstown right. Phone: 9367 6073 CHIPS Given the dearth of eating options in the immediate neighourhood, Bob’s Diner is sure to be of interest. Kenny Weir is the founder of Consider the Sauce, the definitive guide to eating in Melbourne’s western suburbs –www.considerthesauce.net

SPORT Thumping win a good sign for Seagulls Williamstown has kick-started its Victorian Football League finals campaign with a runaway 45-point win over Casey Demons at Burbank Oval on Saturday. The Seagulls were challenged in the third quarter, but the minor premiers responded to boot eight of the last nine goals of the match. The Seagulls set the game up with a seven-goal-to-two second-quarter blitz. Their lead at half-time was a chunky 36 points, but with the wind favouring one end, the Demons were always going to give the hosts something to think about with a big third quarter. Holding a slender one-point advantage at the last change, Williamstown made full use of the wind in the final term to register a comfortable win and move directly to the preliminary final. Arryn Siposs (five goals) and San Dunell (four) have struck a rich vein of form in attack for the Seagulls. Siposs was named best-on-ground. Lachlan Schultz, Nick Meese and Billy Myers were the other standout Seagulls. Meese
had 58 hit-outs – all in a day’s work for the competition’s premier ruckman not AFL-listed. Willie Wheeler had a team-high 28 disposals to go with eight tackles and eight inside-50s for the Seagulls. Williamstown will await the winner of the Port Melbourne and Footscray semi-final. Footscray survived a scare in the elimination final, beating Essendon by five points in a classic at Fortburn Stadium on Sunday. Key forward Tom Boyd was outstanding for the Bulldogs with four goals, including a stunning set shot goal kicking into the breeze from 50 metres out. Clay Smith played like a man possessed in the midfield with 19 disposals, including seven inside-50s and two goals. Footscray will return to Fortburn Stadium on Sunday to face Port Melbourne.
IN THE DOGHOUSE ■ Deer Park continues to dominate WRFL division 1. It is expected that in two weeks the club will hoist its fifth premiership cup in a row into the stratosphere at Whitten Oval. It would be one of footballs biggest upsets ever if the Lions didn’t win, such is their dominance. They have outstripped the achievements of any other team in the history of the league, including Bazza’s Braybrook team (Barry Priest) of the ’70s, the much-loved Colts of the late ’90s and the Spotswood sides of the 2000s. This Deer Park side has no peers. Coach Marc Bullen and former captain Chris Stewart are the foundation of the side. Both deserve the highest accolades for their longevity and ability to perform at a level previously not seen in this competition.

■ Tarneit Titans will contest the division 3 grand final this Saturday after knocking over Wyndham Suns last Sunday in the preliminary final. The Titans have worked hard since coming into the competition in 2013. In the grand final, they will face the oldest club in the competition, Parkside. ■ The division 2 grand final this Sunday at Burbank Oval will be between North Footscray and Yarraville Seddon, the two best teams in that competition all year. Both senior coaches are stepping down after the game. Yarraville’s Dean “Nippa” Calloway and North Footscray’s Shaun “Bazza” Borlase have been great representatives for their respective clubs. I believe whoever wins won’t go up to division 1 next year – and that is probably sensible. The jump from one level to the next is enormous in so many areas, but most notably in terms of on-field talent and off-field fundraising. The salary cap doubles, but even if clubs spend it all, it certainly doesn’t guarantee they will be competitive.
Hollow end to campaign By Lance Jenkinson Footscray players were left “gutted” after a 3-2 elimination final defeat to Greensborough in the Hockey Victoria women’s premier league at the State Netball Hockey Centre on Saturday. The Bulldogs first tilt at top-flight finals was going well until a decision late in the game went against them and the Burra capitalised with the decisive goal with three minutes left. “It was goal for goal, they got one, we got one,” Bulldogs women’s team manager Greg Hopkins said of the tight contest. “They got the goal with about three minutes to go, but there was a free that should’ve been awarded to us deep in our defence, which was seen by everybody, unfortunately except for the two umpires. “Our players all stopped because it was so obvious, but the play kept on going and in a couple of passes it was a goal. “They stopped the game after that, the umpires convened, but neither of them saw any infringement.
“It wasn’t a very nice way to lose.” By no means is Footscray isolating that decision as the reason for its exit. Sometimes the rub of the green goes your way, other times it doesn’t, which Hopkins pointed out, saying: “That’s sport, isn’t it?” Footscray had enough attacking penetration to put a winning score on the board. The Bulldogs lacked that knock-out punch. “The decision we were frustrated with, but the reality was that we had chances late in the game that we probably just didn’t take,” Hopkins said. “When you don’t take them, particularly in a final, they can come back to hurt you.” Footscray will have a sour taste for the ending, but eventually it will be looked upon as a memorable campaign. It was a largely youth-driven squad who took the Bulldogs to their first finals’ appearance in the big league. Taking a finals-hardened Greensborough team down to the wire in a final is no mean feat. “As the coach [Lachlan Anderson] said after
52 MARIBYRNONG & HOBSONS BAY STAR WEEKLY \ SEPTEMBER 6, 2017
the game, he couldn’t be more proud of the girls,” Hopkins said. “It’s the first year the club has made finals in the top grade, so there’s certainly plenty to get excited about in the future. “We have got youth on our side, but we’d die for a couple more experienced players, which is what the opposition had. “We played a side in Greensborough that have probably been in the finals for the past 10 years and that experience counts for a lot.” In men’s premier league, Footscray was eliminated from the title race, going down 4-1 to a more advanced Power House/St Kilda at the SNHC on Saturday evening. “They just had a bit more polish and a bit more class around the ground,” Hopkins said. Meanwhile, Altona was beaten 4-1 in a shoot-out by Camberwell after the game at SNHC ended 3-3. Pat Phillips was the Seagulls only scorer in the shoot-out, while Camberwell managed to find the back of the net on all four attempts. The Seagulls will live to fight another day after earning a double chance.
■ Williamstown moved a step closer to another VFL flag last weekend by beating the Casey Demons and is now just one win away from another grand final appearance. The Seagulls, as good teams do, save their best for September. Footscray kept its premiership defence alive with a stirring win over Essendon. The Bulldogs will face Port Melbourne in another make or break effort this weekend.

Western rivals face off for final berth It is a scenario that was totally unexpected, but you will not find one lacrosse fan across the west complaining. An all-west Lacrosse Victoria men’s state league preliminary final will be contested by Footscray and Williamstown for the right to the last spot in this year’s grand final. You would have bet your bottom dollar on undefeated Footscray earning a direct passage to the grand final, but it succumbed to finals pressure in a 14-11 loss to Camberwell at PJ Lynch Reserve on Saturday. The Bulldogs went through the home-and-away rounds with an 18-0 record, but it meant little as Camberwell raced to a four-goal quarter-time lead and never looked back. James Lawerson fired in four goals for Footscray, while Anthony Biscardi and Jordan Germershausen added three each, but their second half comeback attempt was thwarted. The positive for Footscray is that its wake-up call did not come in a grand final and it will

get a chance to re-group ahead of a tricky encounter with Williamstown. The defending champion Fearons will be licking their lips at the prospect of a free shot at Footscray in a cut-throat final.
Williamstown moved on in the finals with a 13-6 win over Surrey Park at PJ Lynch Reserve. The Fearons were red hot in the last quarter, piling on six goals to one. Alex Pike finished with a game-high three goals, while two goals each for Troy Butson, Sean Clarke and Kade Robinson sealed a comfortable win. Remember when Williamstown came from third spot to beat minor premiers Footscray in the grand final 12 months ago? The Fearons, who also finished third this season, will be hoping history kind of repeats a week earlier than last season, while Footscray will just be hoping to regain the form that made it an unstoppable force during the home-and-away rounds. In women’s state league, Newport cruised to a 10-1 win over Caulfield in a one-sided preliminary final at PJ Lynch Reserve. The Porters will face off with undefeated Footscray in the grand final. Lions turn up the heat By Lance Jenkinson Deer Park continues to rule September with an iron fist. The Lions know there are nine other Western Region Football League division 1 clubs that want to see the end of their dynasty, so they are not about to let their guard down as they strive to create league history with a never-before-seen fifth consecutive top-flight premiership in their sights. Lions coach Marc Bullen warned the opposition his players came into their own at finals time. “If you want to step up in September, you’ve got to bring your A-game,” Bullen warned the other finalists. The biggest challenges for the four-time defending premier naturally come in the finals when it is pitted against the best of the rest. But those challenges seem to bring out the best in the Lions as they click into first gear when spring arrives. The finals invincibles did it again on Saturday, crushing credible contenders, the Sunshine Kangaroos, by 77 points in their semi-final at Hogans Road Reserve. “I’m proud of the guys, the way they’ve applied themselves and turned a 52-point loss in round 18 to a 77-point win in the semi-final,” Bullen said. Save for the opening 10 minutes, it was all one-way traffic in this one. Deer Park had 90 per cent of the match on its own terms in general play and on the scoreboard. “An underlying trait of all of our players is they’re just competitors – they just hate losing,” Bullen said. “From the outset today, the mindset of the players and the coaching staff was driven and we made sure we left no stone unturned. “That’s why we’ve got ourselves into another grand final and we’re trying to create some history.” Deer Park kicked with the aid of the wind in the first quarter, but did not take full advantage. The Lions led by 30 points at the first break after missing many opportunities. It was their work into the breeze in the early part of the second quarter that confirmed to all that Sunshine would not be getting back into the contest. The Lions bullied the Kangaroos in the key area of the ground, the battle in the centre. When Deer Park wins the midfield battle – led by ruckman Chris Stewart and onballers Jack Purton-Smith, David Gallagher and Rodney Van Riet, along with a host of pinch hitters – they are nigh on unstoppable. Quick transition to forwards Jase Perkins and James Condos made it hard to keep the Lions off the scoreboard. Perkins kicked six goals from 11 scoring

shots, while Condos contributed four. Former AFL players Shannon Byrnes and Ryan Houlihan were superb leaders for the Lions. Deer Park will get a week’s rest before the grand final, while Sunshine will square off with Hoppers Crossing in the preliminary final at
Burbank Oval on Saturday. In division 2, top two sides Yarraville-Seddon and North Footscray will contest the grand final at Burbank Oval on Sunday, while the division 3 decider will be contested by Parkside and Tarneit at Hogans Road Reserve on Saturday.

Jets lay the foundations for a strong start Western Jets have ended the TAC Cup season on a high note, winning three of their past four games. The Jets will particularly savour their 21-point victory over Calder Cannons in the final round at Rams Arena on Saturday, which saw them complete the double over their main rivals this campaign. “It’s a healthy rivalry that we’ve got,” Jets coach Torin Baker said. “There’s plenty of good off-field relationships that exist between the two groups and a lot of boys play footy against one another or go to school with one another. “We were really pleased with the way the boys competed in both games against them.” The most pleasing aspect for the Western Jets was the youth who drove the side to victory. Of the 22 players who sung the song, 15 were still eligible to play for the Jets next season. It was important for the Jets to send off their departing top-age players in style, but Baker made no secret that he put a line-up out with a view to next season. The team included promising 16-year-olds Darcy Cassar, Ethan Bentley and Lachlan Rzanovski, the latter pair on debut. “That was exciting for the club,” Baker said. “We’ve had an eye to the future in the second half of the year.” It was Lachlan Fogarty who had the biggest impact for the Western Jets in his farewell game. Fogarty, a Vic Metro representative this year and a hot tip to be selected at this year’s AFL national draft, kicked three goals in a dominant display. “I thought it was a great way for Lachie to finish off his TAC Cup career,” Baker said. Tristan Xerri, a draft smokey, produced arguably his best performance of the season with two goals in a ruck-forward role. Xerri has played some standout football for Vic Metro at the nationals and for Werribee Tigers as the 23rd man in the Victorian Football League, but he saved his best till last for the Jets. “I thought this was his best TAC Cup game for the year,” Baker said. “With some of the talls, they just get better and better with more footy, and his second half of the year has been very good.” In other news, Western Jets key forward Emerson Jeka was last week named in the elite NAB AFL Academy for 2017-18. Two Jets made the TAC Cup team of the year – Fogarty on the wing and Cameron Rayner at full-forward. Oakleigh Chargers star Jack Higgins took out the 2017 Morrish Medal for league best-and-fairest with 22 votes, two votes ahead of Brad Bernacki. Lance Jenkinson

Magic’s NPL dreams realised By Lance Jenkinson All the delays in the world could not stop Altona Magic from securing a long-awaited promotion to the National Premier League. The Magic’s quest to become an NPL club has hit plenty of snags over the past 12 months, but it finally became a reality after a 3-1 win over Western Suburbs in the penultimate round of the Football Federation Victoria men’s state league 1 season at Ralph Reserve on Sunday. “All the emotion came out today, which was expected because we’ve been planning this for 11 months,” Magic coach Goran Lozanovski said of the post-game reaction. Last season, Altona Magic did its part, winning the state league 1 title. The Magic’s NPL bid was met with a dead end after the FFV decided to delay promotion between the state leagues and the NPL for another season. It was a frustrating development for the Magic, who were ready to take their place in the NPL, only to have to re-load for another tilt in state league 1. But Altona did not sit on its hands and continued to evolve, installing the well
credentialled, but home grown, Lozanovski as coach, who took them to back-to-back titles. Lozanovski dropped down two levels to coach the Magic. It was seen as a risky move for Lozanovski but it was also a labour of love. “People keep asking me the question why I stepped down two levels to go and coach Altona Magic, but one half of the reason was that it was my boyhood club” he said. “My father [Bill] had a big part of that, he was part of the journey that the club evolved. “The other half was having an ambitious committee that wanted to get the club back in the limelight where they belong.” It was a timely move for Lozanovski. The 43-year-old made a promise to his father that he would get the Magic promoted. Bill attended games early in the season, just like he did ever since the club’s foundation year in 1968. Sadly, Bill passed away mid-season, and did not get the chance to see his son fulfil his promise. It was fitting that Lozanovski and the Magic locked away promotion on Father’s Day. “I had a quiet chat with the players after the game, after the celebrations and thanked them because today was like the stars aligned, it was
Father’s Day and it was my first one without my father and we achieved what we wanted to achieve,” Lozanovski said. Altona appeared to be cruising towards the title at the halfway mark of the season, but the back end of the campaign was littered with inconsistent form. The Magic steadied with two wins and a draw from the past three games to lock away top spot. Even the Western Suburbs game was uncomfortable. Coasting at half-time with a 2-0 lead, the Magic went down to 10 men when goalkeeper Sebastien Bechaud was red carded. The Magic found a much-needed third goal when Adamson Ajayi cut the ball back to Marino Gasparis for the goal that would take the team to promotion. “It was a little bit terrifying with having a keeper sent off and conceding a goal,” Lozanovski said. “We were living on edge, but the third goal made life a bit easier in the last couple of minutes.” Altona will host Essendon Royals in the last round at Paisley Park on Saturday, which will kick-start its promotion party.

CY’s easy win makes history Williamstown CYMS is ready and raring to go for the Victorian Amateur Football Association Premier C finals. The Matt Montebello-coached CYs are primed to hit the ground running after a 96-point win over Old Ivanhoe Grammarians in the final round at Crofts Reserve on Saturday. It will be a history-making day when CYs play the elimination final against Marcellin at Sportcover Arena on Sunday as they have never been part of a senior Premier division finals series before. The CYs left nothing to chance, powering to a huge victory on the back of a 13-goal-to-one second half. There were 10 CYs goalkickers. Mitch Parkinson led the way with four, while William Ostrowski, Jake Slee, Ben Deller and Ben Gray booted three apiece. Russell Ackerly was named best-on-ground for the second time this season against Old Ivanhoe. Lance Jenkinson

Altona City in box seat for elusive title Altona City is going up to the top tier of the Football Federation Victoria state leagues for only the third time in club history. City secured a top two finish in men’s state league 2 on Saturday with a 3-1 win on the road over Hume United at Laura Douglas Reserve. An ecstatic City president Joe Tanti said promotion to state league 1 came a year ahead of schedule. “When our committee took over, it was a goal for us to get there in five years, we’ve done it in four,” he said. “We’re rapt, it’s an unbelievable relief, the feeling around the club is great.” There are few tougher away venues to clinch the three points needed for promotion than Hume United. City knew a draw would be enough for it to jump up a division, but a win would keep them in the box seat for the title. Securing all three points was the best possible outcome for City.
“At the start of the game, we were all thinking to ourselves that we’ll be happy with a point, which would take us three points clear of third going into the last game,” Tanti said. “The boys just dug deep to get the win, it was a fantastic effort all round.” Altona City can clinch the title with a win over Diamond Valley United at Kim Reserve this Saturday. City will go up as champions if it achieves a better result than western rivals Hoppers Crossing, which has a tougher match-up against fourth-placed Fitzroy City. It will be a golden opportunity for Altona City to win a title. City has enjoyed many promotions over its 52-year history, but titles have been rare for them. “We’ve finished runners-up a fair bit and have only won, I think two titles, in our whole existence,” Tanti said. “We’re committed to winning the league.” It was the Marcus Sherif show in Altona

City’s promotion-clinching win over Hume United. Sherif came off the bench and ran riot in attack, finishing with two goals. Altona City will hold its annual beyondblue charity day when it faces Diamond Valley on Saturday. City has ditched the traditional colours for a predominantly blue kit in the name of raising awareness for mental health. “It’s something that we get behind and we want to give something back,” Tanti said. “While the club is going well and everything is going well, it just puts a positive spin on the end of the year, keeps everyone smiling and involved, and helps us talk about things if we’re not feeling the best.” Meanwhile, Laverton Park was crowned champions of men’s state league 5. The Reds secured the title with a 9-0 annihilation of Maidstone United at Scovell Reserve on Saturday. Lance Jenkinson
Hard going at Sandy Creek The Footscray Cycling Club’s winter road racing season’s round 13 put riders around the notoriously exposed and tricky Sandy Creek circuit near Little River. Strong north-westerly winds, a gravel section and a steep climb made the day’s racing not one for the faint-hearted. Geelong guest rider Trent Clifford won the A-grade race. Clifford, 31, and gun rider Tom Paton dominated the end game on lap three. “It just got harder and harder every time we got to the gravel,” Clifford said. In a show of great form, 16-year-old future star Hamish Munro took an amazing third place, well clear of Miles DaCosta in fourth. The other winners were: Daniel Standen (B grade), David Bertovic (C grade) and Tiernan Clark (D grade). Mark Micallef
