“Council has also requested additional measures be introduced to control truck impacts on Millers Road,” she said.

In a submission to the project’s Inquiry and Advisory Committee, tabled on Friday, VicRoads backed the project but conceded it will have an affect on residential Hyde Street properties between Francis Street and the proposed Hyde Street ramps.

“VicRoads remains amenable to considering the purchase of these properties on hardship grounds on a case-by-case basis, given the unique nature of their circumstances,” it stated.

Meanwhile three more noise walls have been announced to allay concerns about increased noise in McIvor Reserve and Stony Creek Reserve in Yarraville and Crofts Reserve in Altona North.

Shadow roads minister Ryan Smith said concerns about traffic modelling raised by two experts hired by the government show the project is “looking more like a $5.5 billion white elephant”.

Hobsons Bay residents and council have welcomed the announcement of two new truck bans in Spotswood and Altona North once the West Gate Tunnel is completed in 2022.

Residents of Hyde Street in Yarraville are also clinging to hope they may be bought out after VicRoads indicated it may be open to acquiring properties impacted by an increase in trucks flowing from the tollway project.

Roads Minister Luke Donnellan said 24/7 truck bans in Hudsons Road and Blackshaws Road were in response to modelling which identified that these streets could become rat runs.

“There would be anything between 500-600 trucks extra a day right up to many thousands extra trucks a day on these residential streets,” he said.

He said the government understood it needed to provide incentives to get freight trucks onto higher arterial roads. These would include shuttle rates, trip caps and night discounts.

Williamstown MP Wade Noonan said the bans were in response to community concerns that some trucks may avoid the tolls on the West Gate Tunnel.

“This, of course, follows bans that have already been announced in Yarraville, Seddon, which are also about improving the liveability once the West Gate Tunnel project is in fact completed,” he said.

Chris Dunlevy, a member of the Don’t Destroy Millers Road lobby group, said the community welcomed the bans but wanted them to go further.

“It’s what we have called for and great for the residents around those roads,

but I think it doesn’t go far enough,” he said.

“Millers Road is still being completely ignored and we would like to see the ban extended to include Millers Road.”

Hobsons Bay mayor Sandra Wilson said the council was keen to partner with VicRoads to complete traffic managements plans for Blackshaws Road, Millers Road and Spotswood to ensure continued flows for local traffic.

Sims crushed by debt, poor sales, management Poor management, poor sales and spiralling debts racked up by a failed venture into North Blackburn were behind the failure of the Sims IGA Plus Liquor supermarkets in Footscray and Werribee, according to a leaked report.

Investigations have also found a number of potential breaches of duties by directors William Sims, Richard Sims and David Cotter.

Creditors owed more than $10 million have voted to liquidate the companies behind the failed stores.

About 160 staff still face an uncertain future as negotiations continue to sell the

two operations. Liquidator Shane Cremin of Rodgers Reidy said the terms of the sales must still be ironed out before staff will learn their fate.

Mr Cremin earlier this month told creditors the sales won’t even cover the debt of almost $3.8 million to first ranking creditor Metcash.

Staff left chasing $1.6 million in unpaid superannuation and leave entitlements may be entitled to claim their missing leave money under the federal government’s Fair Entitlements Guarantee, however the scheme does not cover unpaid superannuation.

The Australian Tax Office is owed $860,000, the landlord of the Footscray store almost $700,000 and ANZ owed almost $450,000.

A confidential report by Rodgers Reidy, seen by Star Weekly, showed a $1.9 million decline in annual sales from $18.4 million to $16.6 million at the Footscray store over the past two years, as well as a $1.6 million drop from $18.5 million to $16.9 million at Werribee.

The companies also guaranteed loans to the Sims Blackburn store, which closed in February this year, around the same time as the sudden death of company director David Cotter.

Grim reality on roads

By Benjamin Millar A dangerous mix of vulnerable road users and heavy vehicles is creating a perfect storm on Maribyrnong roads, according to the area’s top road cop.

A motorcyclist died after crashing into a parked container truck in Yarraville on Tuesday morning. It was the fourth fatality on Maribyrnong roads in less than a fortnight and the sixth since March.

Footscray Acting Inspector Jason Templar, the Westgate highway patrol unit commander, said it was a major concern to see so many fatalities involving pedestrians, motorcycles and trucks in such a short time span.

“We can’t police every road at every minute, but there is a pattern there and we are looking at a real focus on … looking at how we stop these accidents occurring,” he said.

Acting Inspector Jason Templar said Maribyrnong was unique in Melbourne for its particular mix of heavy trucks, foot traffic and increasing number of cyclists.

He said rapid population growth in and around Footscray was only going to make the mix more volatile.

“The common contributing factor in these cases appears to be inattention or distraction.

Whether people are on foot or a motorbike or driving a truck, there needs to be the same level of alertness.”

Potential breaches of duties by the directors include insolvent trading, unfair preference payments, uncommercial transactions and numerous transactions between the companies and related parties. Creditors have been told the companies appear to have been trading insolvent since at least December 2016.

Creditors have been warned pursuing the directors through the courts would be expensive and they may not have enough assets under their names to pay out debts.

Police believe the motorcyclist killed in Tuesday’s incident struck a parked truck while travelling north on Williamstown Road near Somerville Road soon after 6am.

The Williamstown Road death follows the death of a man who walked in front of a motorcycle on Moore Street in Footscray early on Monday morning.

A woman died after being hit by a truck on Somerville Road in West Footscray on August 22 and a motorcyclist died when he crashed into a pole on Ballarat Road in Footscray on August 18. A woman was hit by a truck while crossing Geelong Road in Footscray on June 30 and a female cyclist died after colliding with a truck in Yarraville in March.

Gangland widow Roberta Williams has stepped up to challenge Bill Shorten for the seat of Maribyrnong at the next federal election.

Ms Williams, wife of slain underworld kingpin and convicted killer Carl Williams, gained notoriety during Melbourne’s long-running gangland wars.

She has been pre-selected as a candidate for the Australian People’s Party, aiming to unseat the Opposition Leader who has held the safe Labor seat since 2007.

Ms Williams’ time in jail for drug trafficking won’t affect her candidacy as her sentence was less than 12 months.

However, a hurdle remains in her declaration of bankruptcy last year after racking up a debt of more than $300,000 to the Australian Taxation Office.

Ms Williams’ candidacy profile states the mother of five is “a charitable person” with a “great understanding” of the needs of the homeless, troubled youth and people with disabilities and mental health issues and those experiencing financial difficulties.

“She would like to focus on better facilities for troubled youth, and also helping the homeless with better strategies in finding housing,” the profile says.

Policies of the Australian People’s Party, registered earlier this year, include a “fairer” taxation system providing larger tax returns, free education, a bill of rights and “jobs for Australian citizens first”.

Roberta and Carl Williams pleaded guilty in 2004 to participating in a $450,000 drug trafficking operation that unwittingly supplied ecstasy and cocaine to undercover police.

Cycling death prompts promise

By Benjamin Millar The tragic death of mother Arzu Baglar while cycling in Yarraville earlier this year has spurred Maribyrnong MP Bill Shorten to promise to improve cycling infrastructure in Melbourne’s inner-west.

Mr Shorten last week announced his support for a velodrome and cycling education hub to be built in the area, vowing it would be a matter of “when” not “if”.

“The more we can encourage people to ride, there’s health benefits, productivity benefits,

community liveability benefits,” he said. “I want us to have our share of resources in this part of the city – the west hasn’t had its fair share.”

Mr Shorten said cycling infrastructure would be part of the Labor party’s platform at the next federal election.

He said the tragic death of Ms Baglar, who collided with a truck while cycling past Yarraville Gardens, touched his family directly as his daughter and her daughter were close friends.

“We had to explain to our daughter that Arzu

was no longer alive and her friend was going to do it very hard,” he said.

“We can do better. I am determined to clear the space in the federal budget so that we look after the west, we look after cycling infrastructure across the country.”

Mr Shorten said the proposed velodrome and cycling education hub may or may not be suitable for Hansen Reserve in West Footscray, but are clearly needed somewhere in the west.

Project advocate John Symons said there was a massive gap in infrastructure in the west.

“We did a bit of research and found one out

of three kids today don’t know how to ride a bike. From that we realised there has to be an education centre for all ages, all abilities, to get more people on bikes.”

Gellibrand MP Tim Watts said infrastructure shortages are one of the frustrations of being a cyclist in Melbourne’s west.

“We need to make cycling and active transport part of our everyday lives.”

Maribyrnong mayor Catherine Cumming said she would welcome federal funding for cycling and would like to see it spent on cycling education and infrastructure improvements.

Dad goes extra mile A West Footscray dad is facing the razor this Father’s Day to help other dads with premature babies.

Radford White is leading a team of five dads into Sunday’s shave in support of the Royal Women’s Hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Dads’ Group. The NICU Beard Club is almost halfway to its goal of raising $40,000.

Mr White will also use the shave to launch an ebook and podcast series of interviews he undertook with former NICU dads.

He said the premature birth by 10 weeks of his twins Maisie and Rupert, now four, opened his eyes to the difficulties dads face during the babies’ time in intensive care and beyond.

“There is a real sense of overwhelm. It’s a real challenge for the dads, torn between their newborns, their partners and their jobs, all their existing responsibilities.”

Mr White has spent the past 12 months interviewing nine other NICU dads, holding

informal chats in the hope other new dads can learn from their NICU experience.

“They have been super appreciative to have a conversation about it, guys don’t get speaking about their emotions much,” he said.

“My kids were there for 10 weeks and 14 weeks, so having the conversation with someone who has been through it is really helpful.”

Mr White’s new ebook will include transcripts of all the interviews, a “jargon-busters” section to help dads navigate unfamiliar medical terminology, and a “how to survive your first 72 hours in NICU” guide.

“A lot of guys I spoke to didn’t have any insight or preparation for how a NICU birth might be until it happened,” he said.

Councils stand firm on equality

By Goya Dmytryshchak and Benjamin Millar Maribyrnong and Hobsons Bay councils are standing behind the push for marriage equality in the federal government’s forthcoming postal survey.

Hobsons Bay council in 2012 made a submission to a parliamentary inquiry in support of marriage equality irrespective of sex, gender identity or any other attribute.

Councillor Tony Briffa four years ago married school teacher Manja Sommeling in New Zealand.

But because Cr Briffa was born intersex, or both male and female, their marriage is not recognised in Australia.

“I support the end of discrimination in our marriage laws and recognise it is a significant legal and human rights issue for many local residents, including me,” Cr Briffa said.

“All people should be able to marry their partner irrespective of sex or gender.”

Cr Briffa said the council resolved to support marriage equality in 2012 and the Hobsons Bay 2030 Community Vision included supporting diversity and social inclusion.

Mayor Sandra Wilson said that while the

council had not yet considered the marriage equality plebiscite, it remained committed to its 2014 gender equity statement.

This states the council is “committed to a safe and just community, where every girl, boy, women, man and gender diverse person is included and valued – where equal and respectful relationships and opportunities for meaningful participation are supported and celebrated”.

Maribyrnong council in 2015 unanimously passed a motion by Cr Sarah Carter calling on the federal government to allow same-sex couples to marry.

In introducing the motion, Cr Carter said the vast majority of Australians supported same-sex marriage and no longer wanted to tolerate discrimination.

“I have a sister who is gay … I can’t fathom a world in which she can’t marry a woman she loves,” Cr Carter said.

Mayor Catherine Cumming said the council was strongly in favour of equality on a number of fronts.

“Marriage is just one of those many levels,” she said.

The $122 million postal survey will be conducted from September 12.

Not a care in the world How good would it be if someone could take away your worries or cares in a simple transaction?

That someone is artist Dan Goronszy aka The Care Taker who will be plonking her chair in Spotswood and Altona North as part of Hobsons Bay’s Art in Public Places this month.

She is inviting people to pull up the chair next to her and unburden themselves of a care.

Goronszy writes down the care and provides a receipt to complete the transfer.

The masters student at RMIT said she got the idea from a chance discovery on campus.

“There’s a little old laneway as part of the campus that holds the old city morgue and just down from that is this sign painted on the wall that says, ‘Caretaker, press to ring’, and then there’s a really old red button,” she said.

“I did start thinking, ‘what if you could just press a button and your cares would be taken’.”

Goronszy said the art ritual had become “really special” with some strangers revealing cares that had burdened them for years.

“I am particularly interested in people sharing with me a care that they would like to be free from,” she said.

Some of the anonymous cares will be displayed in public in the interest of sharing and making people feeling less alone.

The Care Taker Is In will be happening in Hudsons Road, Spotswood, from 11am-1pm on September 9, 10, 15 and 17, and at Altona Gate Shopping Centre, Altona North, from 3-6pm on September 9 and 10.

A doughnut delivery driver was injured in an attempted vehicle theft in Altona North early on Monday morning. Police say three men arrived at the United service station in Pinnacle Road about 4.20am. RSPCA inquiry into cat hoarder

“Cats breed prolifically [and that’s] where large scale problems can develop quickly.

Hoarding continues to be a serious issue for councils and welfare agencies.”

The council’s corporate services director, Tammi Rose said numerous return visits had been made to the house.

“After the initial visit with the RSPCA, our animal management team has made numerous follow-up visits to collect all remaining cats in the household,” she said.

RSPCA Victoria Inspectorate team leader Tiffany Page said the investigation was ongoing.

“We urge anyone with concerns for the welfare of animals to make a report at rspcavic. org or call 9224 2222.”

Seddon’s golden girl Seddon athlete Margherita Coppolino is on top of the world after collecting gold and two silver medals at the World Dwarf Games.

Coppolino’s medal haul from powerlifting and the sport of boccia at the Games in Ontario, Canada earlier this month have been added to the gold and silver she collected for boccia in 2013.

Coppolino, 57, collected her gold record with a record-breaking 53-kilogram lift.

“I’m just feeling on top of the world, I still can’t believe I broke a record,” she said. “For a 57-year-old woman to just lift 53 kilograms out of the blue – I reckon I could have done even more but it was my fourth and final lift.”

Competing in her third Games, Coppolino also picked up silver in both the boccia team event and the boccia individual event, a ball sport similar to bocce.

She said she was urged on by an electric atmosphere and great support from Team Australia.

Coppolino, who trains at the Exercise Room in Footscray, entered the Games hoping to raise the profile of people with short stature.

She has her sights on qualifying for the 2020 Summer Paralympics and helping Australia’s push to host the World Dwarf Games in 2021.

Some of the 75 cats removed from a cat hoarder in Williamstown remain in recovery, in what an animal rescuer describes as one of the worst cases he has seen.

As reported by Star Weekly in July, 55 cats and kittens were initially removed from a house

by Western Suburbs Cat and Kitten Rescue.

Following our report, which revealed more cats remained on the property, Hobsons Bay council removed a further 20 animals.

The rescue’s founder, Nathan Miles said it was disappointing and tragic that almost half the cats had to be euthanased. However, he said it had been expected given their “horrific” condition.

The Lost Dogs Home’s Dr David Cunliffe said 36 cats were euthanased on humane grounds and because of severe behavioural issues which likely stemmed from their neglected health and poor socialisation.

Thirty-nine are either in recovery, awaiting adoption or have been adopted.

“The overall health and wellbeing of the cats was severely compromised with various complex pathways and plans required to save and rehabilitate most of them,” Dr Cunliffe said.

“Ringworm, flu and dental disease was common, needing medical intervention with some cases leading to surgery, while others [were] requiring longer fostering in a home environment.

“Animal hoarders are often secretive and fail to see the welfare problems in front of them.

Deception sentence appealed

By Alesha Capone A man who obtained property valued at more than $250,000 by deception has been granted leave to appeal his prison sentence.

Jake Matthew Friel, pleaded guilty in the County Court last November to eight charges of obtaining property by deception, 12 charges of attempting to obtain property by deception and one charge of possessing another person’s identification information.

The court heard 26-year-old Friel’s offending

was “rooted” in his use of the drug ice. Friel had obtained more than $256,158 of property by deception, mostly between November 2015 and February 2016.

His crimes included using stolen identity documents to buy jewellery valued at more than $5085 from a Pacific Werribee store.

He also used a false driver’s licence to open accounts and obtain two loans valued at $30,000 each, at banks in Werribee and Hoppers Crossing.

Police intercepted Friel after he drove a

BMW though a red light on Palmers Road, Point Cook, and produced a driver’s licence bearing someone else’s name.

In January 2016, while on bail, Friel visited Wyndham Vale bank and tried to apply for a loan using a false driver’s licence.

During the next few weeks he unsuccessfully attempted to use false identities and papers to get loans from banks in Caroline Springs, Watergardens and Altona North.

Something to crow about The West Footscray Roosters are hoping to ruffle some opposition feathers by fielding a competitive women’s team next season.

The club is on the lookout for women keen to lace up the boots and hit the field for 2018.

West Footscray Football Club vice president Shaun Hudson said the club is on the verge of setting up its first ever senior women’s team, but still needs more players to bolster its ranks.

“Our social media campaign has created a lot of excitement and we already have 12 players committed at this early stage,” he said.

“We have been keen to do it for a couple of years and our suburb has had considerable growth, so now seems the time.”

Hudson said the runaway success of the AFLW competition this year has built plenty of momentum for attracting more women to the sport.

“Some of the women involved are partners of our male players, while some had a kick around when they were younger,” he said. “Others have

never played before and have no experience … but have jumped in on the back of the AFLW.” Hudson said the team will offer members a fantastic opportunity for socialisation, fitness and enjoying a club environment.

“The only requirement is they are 18 years or older.”

The intention is to bring together enough women to field a team in the 2018 Western Region Football League competition.

This month, Friel faced the Supreme Court of Victoria, where he asked for permission to appeal his original sentence.

Supreme Court Judge Pamela Tate granted him leave to appeal on the grounds that some of the sentences imposed were “manifestly excessive”.

Australia Day shift ‘unlikely’

Fight to save kinders Parents have urged Hobsons Bay council not to sacrifice two small Altona kindergartens for a new “Bunnings-type” hub at a protest on Friday.

The council’s administration has recommended Altona Kindergarten and Somers Parade Kindergarten be closed when the $6.9 million Altona Early Years Hub is built on the site of Altona P-9 College.

Courtney Beckwith is a father of twins and himself attended Altona Kindergarten in 1979.

He said he felt a strong connection to the kinder for its role in the development of his children, particularly his son who is on the autism spectrum.

He said the new hub would be “like a Bunnings for early childhood development”.

“It’s just trying to be all things to all people, and for a lot of people that’s absolutely fine and that’s great, and for a lot of people it also isn’t,” Mr Beckwith said.

“With the kinder … it has a strong connection to the community. A new hub in that Bunnings-type thing, well it’s just straight out of the box.”

Hobsons Bay mayor Sandra Wilson said the council would consider the future provision of early years services in Altona at its September meeting. A petition containing 848 signatures and a joint letter signed by committee of management heads of both kindergartens has been submitted to the council.

Inner-west councils are unlikely to follow the lead of their counterparts in Melbourne’s north in dumping references to January 26 as Australia Day. Hobsons Bay mayor Sandra Wilson said the council had not considered joining Yarra and Darebin councils in making any changes to the date.

“There has been no consideration to date by council of any change to the long standing practice of conducting citizenship ceremonies on Australia Day, or with regard to the formal recognition of Australia Day on January 26,” she said.

Cr Tony Briffa acknowledged there were issues with the date of Australia Day, but did not support any changes to the way the day was currently celebrated in Hobsons Bay. Maribyrnong mayor Catherine Cumming said any consideration of changes would first require extensive community consultation.

“As a new council we have talked about it, but if we were to go down the path of starting the conversation we would firstly have a conversation with the broader community about it,” she said. “We know we are not in a position to change a national holiday.”

Cr Cumming said a starting point would be discussing the question with the council’s Reconciliation Action Plan Advisory Committee.

A heartfelt bequest

From 27 August, all weekday services will run direct between Altona and Flinders Street Station.

Altona’s Dr Robert Tonge, who is among the 7.5 per cent of Australians who have left a bequest to charity in their will, says he aims to help fix the tears in the fabric of humanity.

Close to 100 charities have banded together for Include a Charity Week, from September 11-17, in a bid to increase the number of people bequesting to a charity to 12 per cent – translating to an extra $440 million.

Dr Tonge, an 83-year-old retired pediatrician who worked in the public health system, has been a donator for years but in 2014 decided to make a bequest.

He has made four bequests: to Stroke Foundation, NeuRA (Neuroscience Research Australia), Royal Flying Doctor Service and Medecins Sans Frontieres or Doctors Without Borders.

A challenge worth sharing A group of 38 “Legacy youth” will walk the Kokoda Track in Papua New Guinea from August 28 to September 7 to raise funds for Legacy and to raise awareness of its work.

The walk coincides with the commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the Kokoda campaign.

Australian Defence Force members will mentor the Legacy youth chosen to be part of the challenge.

Melbourne Legacy president Graeme Plumridge says the Defence Force personnel mentoring Legacy youth reflects the true spirit of Legacy and its rich history of reaching out to families.

“In addition, the 75th anniversary of the battle of Kokoda, where so many Australian soldiers, sailors and airmen distinguished themselves, will provide a wonderful inspiration,” he says.

Regular training is a prerequisite.

A training camp was held in New South Wales in June to help the group prepare for the 96-kilometre trek through tropical rainforest, challenging mountain terrain and villages along the track.

“The fabric of humanity and the world, that’s holding each other together, has been crumbled and it’s full of holes and tears,” Dr Tonge said, seated inside his modest retirement village unit.

“I’m just aware of these big big tears in this important fabric, like environmental degradation, war and suffering, manmade diseases and natural diseases.”

Dr Tonge said he leaned towards “Cinderella” charities that received less attention.

Stroke is also close to his heart, his mother having died of a massive stroke. He said charities like Stroke Foundation had made enormous advances. He said his bequests would be about eight to 10 per cent of his estate.

“No bequest is too small,” Dr Tonge said.

Participant Ivy Tugado, 23, lost her father due to war. She and her family have been supported by Legacy since she was eight years old. Ivy likens Legacy to a family and says it was Legacy that reached out to her and her family when things were at their worst.

“Legacy means a connection to my father and to other families who have lost a loved one to service,” she says.

“I believe Legacy is the glue that holds the families of the Australian Defence Force together.”

She speaks with Goya Dmytryshchak Growing up in the western suburbs, Hobsons Bay has been an integral part of my life. I have fond memories as a child, of family picnics under the rotunda and playing at the Williamstown beach. I’ve worked locally at various companies, and met my wonderful husband during that time. I recently made a lifetime dream come true and opened an art studio and gallery on Hudsons Road. My dear friends and family live in the area and I frequent the local markets, cafes, restaurants and shops.

What do you like about Spotswood?

Spotswood is a wonderful hidden gem, which has truly evolved over the past 10-15 years.

There’s a real community spirit. I love the industrial/art/cafe mix … there’s something for everyone. Hudsons Road has a vibrant shopping precinct and one of Melbourne’s famous bakeries. It’s also conveniently located and has it’s own train station providing easy access to Melbourne CBD. What would you change?

I’d like to see more trees planted around the cafe precinct and perhaps a street library, book swap cupboard. To support the arts further, installations of street sculptures and wall murals by local artists would be very welcomed.

What’s your favourite local cafe or eatery?

It’s hard to pick a favourite with so many

wonderful choices. As I have a sweet tooth though, I can’t go past Candied Bakery and their quality pastries, friendly service and great coffee.

Can you tell me a bit about your passion for art and involvement in Hobsons Bay’s Art in Public Places program?

Like many artists, art has been a passion of mine since childhood. I was inspired by my dad, an oil painter. Fortunately, as a young child, my mum didn’t seem to mind me making paper mache, playing with paint and in general, making a mess. This allowed my creativity and passion for art to flourish, it was an important component of my childhood and who I am today.

After a long successful career in the corporate world, I decided to make a real commitment to being an artist. Last year I successfully completed a Diploma of Visual Arts and this has transformed my art practice to be more socially and environmentally aware. I’m really passionate, but not limited to, using recycled items and found objects. There’s an exciting unknown factor. I participated in Art in Public Places many moons ago … It was an amazing experience, which allowed me as an artist to meet with my community and answer any questions people may have.

LEGACY SUPPORT FOR BEREAVED FAMILIES Jacky Gavin knows all too well how important the Legacy services are to those touched by the realities of war.

The mother of three lost her husband, Luke, in 2011. He was one of three soldiers killed in the Australian base camp in Kandahar, Afghanistan.

Jacky and Luke had been together for 12 years; their children were so young at the time – Joshua, seven, Holly, five, and Olivia, who was just seven months old. They are now the faces of the Legacy campaign.

When Jacky was trying to pick up the pieces of her life, Legacy was there with what it calls a Legatee – and most often it is someone who has gone through the same sort of tragedy and donates their time to support family’s like those of Jacky, creating a community of other families so they can re-build.

“Six years later, we all still miss Luke terribly, but we now look to our future with certainty, thanks to the help of Legacy,” Jacky says. “My Legatee is in touch with me regularly to find out how we are going and if there is anything he can assist us with.

“Without Legacy, the children wouldn’t be doing any sports or after school activities and they really enjoy these.

“Legacy has been so good to us. I feel blessed. They were there when I needed them and I know I can rely on their support in the years ahead.”

HELP THOSE WHO FIGHT FOR US Legacy has cared for veterans’ families for 94 years, helping them overcome hardship and giving them confidence in the future – but it only survives due to donations and volunteer support.

BM: In footy parlance I’d be a solid half-back flanker; not going to star, rather toil away.

FB: What is your signature dish?

BM: We have a “best of” folder at home with the recipes we’ve tried that are worthy of a 10 out of 10. A lasagne recipe is in there. So, too, the fish pie from Glebe Boathouse in Sydney, and a simple but delicious chicken with rosemary.

FB: If you could only have one more meal, what would it be?

BM: Start with soup. Probably lamb and tomato with a heap of vegies. Follow up with a roast chicken … nothing fancy, perhaps with lemon and tarragon. Finish with a rhubarb crumble.

FB: What is your favourite TV food show and who is your favourite TV food person?

BM: TV show has to be MasterChef MasterChef. TV food person is Yotam Ottolenghi.

FB: What is your favourite food?

BM: Having grown up in the country, I love a hearty slow cooked piece of meat. Shoulder, leg, shanks, ribs … it doesn’t matter.

FB: What is your favourite drink?

BM: Pinot noir.

FB: Which five people would you most like to invite to dinner?

BM: My partner, Cassi, former Carlton footballer Peter Bosustow, Rick Stein, Jimmy Fallon, and Domenico DeMarco from Di Fara Pizza in Brooklyn (NY), so he can teach me the perfect pizza dough.

MUSHROOM AND PORK PINWHEELS 400g button, cup or flat mushrooms, finely chopped 3 green onions, finely chopped 1 tsp dried Italian herbs 400g pork mince 1 egg 1 cup fresh breadcrumbs 3 sheets frozen puff pastry 150g tub basil pesto, pecorino and cashew dip 1 cup grated tasty cheese

Heat 1 tablespoon of oil in a large, non-stick frying pan over high heat. Add the mushrooms and onions and cook, stirring, for eight minutes, until all the moisture has evaporated. Stir in herbs. Set aside to cool for 15 minutes. Drain any excess moisture and transfer to a bowl. Add mince, egg and breadcrumbs to the mushroom mixture and mix well.

Preheat oven to 220/200°C. Line two baking trays with baking paper. Spread dip evenly over three pastry sheets, leaving a 2cm border at the ends furthest away from you.

Divide mince mixture over dip. Sprinkle with cheese. Roll up as tightly as you can.

Chill for 10 minutes then slice each roll into 12 pieces. Plays on trays, cut side down, then bake for 15-20 minutes until golden and mince is cooked through.

SPORT Parkside’s form snares grand final berth

Star forward Jason Cloke had a game-high five goals for Parkside.

Cloke has kicked 115 goals in 19 games for the Magpies this season.

Thomas Deutschbein, Brent Kelly and Joshua Shaw were named best for Parkside.

It will be Parkside’s sixth grand final in a row, spanning two divisions.

The Magpies were on the losing side of the ledger in 2012 and 2013 in division 2, before winning in that division in 2014.

They backed up with grand final losses in 2015 and 2016 in division 3, but will get their chance for redemption in a fortnight.

I wrote recently of the father-son rule in AFL footy and how much fans love it. I am happy to report the family connection in local footy is as strong as ever. Three great grandsons of the late great Charlie Sutton played in winning grand final sides for the Altona Football Club recently. Liam Curran in the under-11s, his brother James in the under-13s and cousin Zayne Wallace in the under 17s. The boys’ history with the club goes back to their great, great, great grandfather James Duke, who was one of the men who established the club in a Pier Street cafe in 1919.

James’ son George was the first soldier from Altona to return home for WWI and his battalion’s colours were purple and gold, colours which the club adopted and still wear today.

was an equally proud day for the Penaluna clan when Kyle became the third generation of the family to proudly wear the Port Melbourne Colts jumper.

Kyle made his senior debut for the Colts a few weeks ago, as proud dad Mark and grandfather Jim watched on.

Jim – who turns 80 soon – has been at the Colts since its inception in 1957 and Mark played in excess of 350 junior and senior games for the club.

By Lance Jenkinson Williamstown has sealed the Victorian Football League minor premiership after a dominant 43-point win over defending premiers Footscray at the Victoria University Whitten Oval on Saturday.

It is the first time since 2010 the Seagulls have finished the home-and-away campaign on top, with their 2015 premiership coming after they qualified for the finals in third place.

“It’s a real accolade for the playing group,” Seagulls coach Andrew Collins said.

“We spoke after the game [about] what a great group of young men they are and how hard working they are.

“They compete against professional teams and to produce such professional performances to finish on top is awesome.”

Williamstown will play a home final at Morris Street for the first time in eight years.

The Seagulls will roll out the welcome mat for the fourth-ranked Casey Demons for a qualifying final at Burbank Oval on Saturday.

“It gives us a great advantage,” Collins said.

“The percentage of wins at home over my four years would run into 80 per cent.”

With no AFL games this weekend, Williamstown is confident the crowds will flock to Burbank Oval to see them in action.

The Seagulls have enjoyed strong crowds all season with their fan engagement up there with the best that any VFL club has to offer.

“It’s become a real community day out, particularly for families,” Collins said.

“The club has done a really good job in getting a family corner with an animal farm, rides, jumping castles and barbecues.

“We’ve just gone from strength to strength on our home games and we’re hoping for a few thousand to come out on the weekend.”

It will be another milestone game for Williamstown veteran Ben Jolley who will play his 200th game for the Seagulls.

The strength of Williamstown’s season has been its ability to mesh the young and the old.

The Seagulls have some of the most exciting youngsters in the league and some of the most reliable experienced campaigners.

The plaudits have come for Collins, who is at the forefront of the Seagulls’ coaching staff, for putting it all together, but he quickly pointed out that it was a team effort across the board.

“I appreciate the accolades, but we’ve got a terrific coaching team in place,” Collins said.

“Michael Osborne, Robbie Campbell, Clay Illman and Matty Pearce, they allow me on game day to coach from the ground because I have that trust in these guys.”

Wyndhamvale junior Jack Fitzpatrick drew the curtain on his AFL career last week, another victim of concussion issues. Doctors advised the ruckman to give the game away or face serious health problems. At the age of 26, Jack made the obvious choice.

Unfortunately his career was dogged by injuries and illness right from the start but in the end he managed 26 games with Melbourne and Hawthorn, including the memorable Hawks win over the Pies in the final round of the 2016 season. Jack’s ball bursting kick for the match-winning goal sealed the Hawks’ final four spot and will be number one on his highlights reel forever.

Parkside has flexed its muscle at the right time to be the first team to advance to the Western Region Football League division 3 grand final.

The Magpies lost to the second-placed Wyndham Suns in the middle of the season, but have belted them twice in the past three weeks, including Saturday’s 54-point second semi-final win at Dempster Park.

The Nick Condos-coached Magpies will get a week’s rest, while they await the winner of the preliminary final between local rivals Wyndham and Tarneit, who advanced with a three-point win over Sunshine Heights.

Parkside blew Wyndham out of the water in the second half on Saturday.

Leading by just six points at half-time, the Magpies went on to kick 11 goals to four in the second half for a convincing win. Had it not been for the Magpies’ errant kicking for goal – they kicked 16.20 from 36 scoring shots – the margin would have blown out even further.

Jets big on effort but lack execution Western Jets was delivered the knockout blow to its TAC Cup finals hopes.

The Jets needed to beat Gippsland Power to stay alive in the race for the top eight, but came up short by 16 points at Morwell Recreation Reserve on Saturday.

“We just couldn’t get the job done today,” Jets coach Torin Baker said.

“I know the players are disappointed, I know they were keen on it [making a late run to the finals].”

It was the Western Jets’ game to lose at three-quarter time.

The Jets had controlled most of the first half and still held a 12-point lead entering the last change.

Gippsland turned it on when it counted, piling on five goals to nil in the last term, leaving the Jets to rue a host of missed opportunities when they had the game on their own terms.

“We put ourselves in a good position,” Baker

said. “We certainly dominated the first quarter and a half, but we wasted some forward entries and didn’t put the score on the board at times.

“Gippsland were fantastic in the last quarter, really had a crack and dominated the contested ball and clearances and just willed their way to win.”

When the Western Jets had the ascendancy, it was coming mainly through its midfield dominance.

Lachlan Fogarty led from the front, displaying the form that has the experts talking up his chances of being a potential first round choice at this year’s draft.

Jaden Rice and Nick Stuhldreier had a big impact at the coal face.

Josh Mould, Buku Khamis and Stefan Radovanovic were also influential with their defensive work and rebound out of the back half. Khamis took four intercept marks in the first quarter alone.

But the Western Jets could not sustain their effort across four quarters.

For all their efforts, they could only manage 6.15, with Zak Butters the only multiple goalkicker with two.

“There’s effort and execution, we had really solid effort, we had good pressure around the ball and were good with some of our method, but just our execution probably in that first half meant we didn’t have enough score on the board,” Baker said.

Western Jets will face arch rivals Calder Cannons at Rams Arena in Craigieburn on Saturday morning.

Eames ready for a fight

By Lance Jenkinson Spotswood is seeking a swift response after losing its qualifying final to Sunshine Kangaroos by 14 points at Wyndham Vale South Oval on Saturday.

The Woodsmen have the benefit of a double chance after an impressive first home-and-away season under new coach Anthony Eames, but they will have to surrender it much earlier than they would have liked after being out-played by an in-form Kangaroos side that has upset the first and second ranked finalists in consecutive weeks.

“You fight for it so you can put it aside for situations like this,” Eames said.

“The unfortunate thing now is every week’s an elimination.

“That’s all right, sometimes you find out about players when their backs are against the wall.

“We have to find something this week at training and produce that on Saturday.”

Spotswood came to play, opening up a 13-point quarter-time lead.

The second quarter would be their undoing though, with Sunshine putting its foot on the accelerator with a 5.7 to 0.1 term The Woodsmen could not get a handle on a Kangaroos midfield that was running like clockwork.

“I thought their run and carry through the middle in the second quarter hurt us and they got a bit of a gap on the scoreboard because of that,” Eames said.

“Sunshine’s bigger bodies gave us a good old work out, which they always do, they’re always hard at it.

“All things being fair, where the game was at at half-time was where it should’ve been.”

Sunshine’s 23-point, half-time lead was by no means safe. Spotswood found something when

the going got tough and managed to peg the deficit to within seven points in the last term.

“We weren’t all that far off, but if they had’ve kicked straight, it probably puts us a bit deeper obviously,” Eames said, “I thought we fought it out and kept having a crack.

“Our skill level probably hurt us in the third and fourth quarters.”

Skipper Murray Boyd sparked the Spotswood fightback from the ruck. Swingman Gareth Newton worked hard at both ends of the ground, while Sam Davis and Nayef Hamad rose to the challenge of playing in the finals.

Spotswood will face Hoppers Crossing in a do-or-die semi-final at Burbank Oval on Sunday.

Hoppers Crossing advanced after surviving a scare to beat Werribee Districts by seven points in the elimination final on Sunday.

The back and forth between Yarraville-Seddon and North Footscray continued in week one of the Western Region Football League division 2 finals on Saturday.

The two sides have been the clear standouts in the division, playing a game of musical chairs between first and second place.

North Footscray fired the first shot during the home-and-away rounds, taking out the minor premiership.

Yarraville-Seddon hit back in the semi-final on Saturday, downing North Footscray by 12 points to be the first side to advance to the grand final.

In a low scoring tussle at Hogans Road Reserve, Yarraville-Seddon only needed seven goals to trump North Footscray’s six.

The Eagles managed to hold a lead at every change and kept the Devils at bay in the last stanza.

It will be Yarraville-Seddon’s second grand final in as many seasons.

The Eagles have unfinished business after losing to Caroline Springs by 14 points in last season’s decider.

Eagles coach Dean Callaway announced during the week he will be stepping down from the role.

Callaway has been senior coach for the past three seasons and was reserves coach for the two years prior.

North Footscray will face Manor Lakes in the preliminary final at Wyndham Vale South Oval on Saturday. The Storm advanced to the second week of the finals with a 48-point win over Albanvale.

Newport Rams make a pitch for new players Pathways, not premierships, is the top priority for the Newport Rams Baseball Club’s junior section.

The Rams are focused on player retention, first and foremost, and if they get that element right, the individual and team success will follow.

“We don’t care how many junior premierships we win, we’re not focused on how many junior state representatives or if superstars come out of it, our real aim is growth and retention,” Rams president Ben Portelli said.

“If everyone who played last year comes back this year and half of them bring a friend, we’re going to grow exponentially and then the results will come, the premierships will happen and the cream will rise to the top.”

The pathways open to baseballers is a major drawcard.

Three of Newport’s rising young stars – Holly Howard, Tyler Comben and Zac Gorman

– have all enjoyed different life experiences through baseball.

Howard, an infielder showing a lot of promise, was part of a Victorian development squad that travelled to Japan as part of an exchange program.

Comben, a pitcher/utility, is in the process of securing a visa to the United States to play college baseball in North Dakota.

Gorman, a catcher, travelled to the US as part of a Victorian under-age team that played baseball at what Portelli called “the Mecca of baseball”.

“We just want to give everyone the best baseball experience,” Portelli said.

“For some kids, that will be hitting a curve ball for the first time, for other kids it will be signing with a college or signing professionally.

“What we want to display is that there’s a pathway to get overseas, to study and travel and experience other parts of the world.”

Newport will hold its second come and

try baseball day at K.C. White Reserve in Williamstown North on September 10 from 9.30am, which is open to all ages.

The Rams will hold a clinic for the kids, a free barbecue and a tour of the facilities, including their new indoor training centre.

More than 80 juniors turned up to the first come and try day on Sunday.

“It’s not a tryout as such where people don’t make the team, it’s come down, have a hit and see how you go,” Portelli said.

“If we can tip as many kids into the bottom ages of the junior program and show them a good time while they’re there, we’ll be in pretty good hands going forward.”

It has been a winter of perfection for Footscray in the Lacrosse Victoria senior competitions. Both of its men’s and women’s teams went through the home-and-away rounds undefeated. The state league men’s side improved to 18-0 with a hard-fought 16-12 win over Surrey Park, while the state league women’s team finished a world cup-shortened season 12-0 with a 12-3 victory over Caulfield. In men’s finals, Footscray will face Camberwell for the right to advance to the grand final, while the elimination final will be contested between Williamstown and Surrey Park. In women’s finals, Newport and Caulfield will square off in the preliminary final for the right to face Footscray in the decider.

Phoenix protests result

By Lance Jenkinson Hold your tickets on Altona East Phoenix being relegated from the Football Federation Victoria men’s state league 1.

The Phoenix went down 1-0 to title contenders Geelong in the catch-up round at Paisley Park Soccer Complex on Saturday, a result that should have confirmed their demotion to the second tier.

But the Phoenix has lodged a protest over the result to the FFV, believing that Geelong played an ineligible player in Saturday’s game.

The Phoenix has written to the FFV suggesting that Slave Bozinovski should not have played for Geelong after accumulating a fifth yellow card the previous week.

The Phoenix had two players – Joel Bistricki and Emilio Benjamin – ineligible because of yellow card accumulation.

“We’re still a chance to get the game reversed in our favour,” Phoenix president Jim Dimitriou said.

“We’ve put in a complaint tonight that they played a player that shouldn’t have been

playing because he was on five yellow cards. He got his fifth yellow card last week, which means he should automatically miss the next week.”

The yellow card register is available for all clubs to use on the FFV’s official website.

Altona East used it to notify Bistricki and Benjamin of their ineligibility to play against Geelong.

“What some clubs do is say unless we get notified by the federation [over e-mail], we play them,” Dimitriou said.

“They try to say they got no official notification.

“We got an e-mail on Wednesday saying two of our players got five yellows, but we knew that anyway because we keep a tab on our yellow card register and tell guys to be careful when they have a certain amount of cards.

“That’s what clubs should be doing, otherwise why waste your time doing it every week if teams aren’t going to look at it?”

A single goal from Antonio Sanchez Campos was enough to sink Altona East.

But the Phoenix made the second-placed Geelong sweat for the full 90 minutes.

“We put up a good fight,” Dimitriou said.

“We had a chance to go one-nil up but we hit the post in the first half, while they got a goal in the second half and held on to it.

“Our players were disappointed, more so because they put up a really good fight undermanned and that one goal killed us.”

If the result is not overturned and Altona East is relegated, the Phoenix has vowed to fight tooth and nail in the remaining two games in a bid to get off the bottom of the ladder.

The Phoenix will play second-last Westgate in their last home game of the season at Paisley Park on Saturday, followed by another meeting with Geelong.

The protest will be closely followed by Altona East’s co-tenants Altona Magic, who is involved in a two-horse race with Geelong for the title.

Meanwhile, Alan Davidson has indicated to Altona East he would like to continue on as coach next season. The former Socceroo took over the position in the latter stages of this season and has warmed to the task.

“I’ve spoken to Alan and he’s keen to help us again next year,” Dimitriou said.

Footscray has warmed up for the Hockey Victoria men’s premier league finals with a 2-1 win away to MCC. Scott Shaw and Rufus McNaught-Barrington were the goalscorers for the Bulldogs. Altona, who has also qualified for the finals, had an entertaining 4-4 draw with Essendon on the road. Both sides hit in two goals in each half, with Altona’s coming off the sticks of Jyah Johnson, Matthew Huf, Andrew Scanlon and Patrick Phillips. In women’s premier league, Footscray went down 3-1 to MCC on the eve of the finals. India Kuhnemann was the Bulldogs only scorer on the day. Altona, already out of the finals race, was sent packing in an 8-0 thrashing at the hands of Essendon.

Football

Williamstown CYMS is clinging to fourth spot in the Victorian Amateur Football Association Premier C, despite a heavy 46-point loss to Old Haileyburians at Princes Park on Saturday. The CYs are one of five teams with an identical 8-9 record with one round to go in the regular season.

CYs will need to beat Ivanhoe Grammarians at Crofts Reserve on Saturday to lock away a finals berth, otherwise they will be relying on other teams to lose.
