Containing the trucks By Benjamin Millar A rail project that could take thousands of container trucks off inner-west streets each day has been dusted off, years after being shelved while the state government pursued privatisation of the Port of Melbourne. In the pipeline since 2007, the $58 million Port Rail Shuttle linking Swanson Dock to inland container terminals could take an estimated 3500 trucks each day off the roads. Despite accepting $38 million funding from the federal government and allocating $20 million in its own 2014-15 budget to the project, the state government stalled the plan while privatising the port. But Victorian Roads and Ports Minister Luke Donnellan announced on Sunday that expressions of interest would soon be sought to deliver a rail freight “shuttle” based on the existing rail network by connecting the port to major freight hubs and businesses. “The Port of Melbourne will remain our primary freight hub for a generation,” he said. “With container numbers expected to double over the next two decades, we need to act now to share the load between road and rail. “Alongside the West Gate Tunnel, 24-hour truck bans in the inner-west and the port’s rail access plans, this project will help shift containers from residential streets on to dedicated routes to the port.” Western suburbs Greens MP Colleen Hartland, who has long pushed for the project to proceed, said she was happy with the commitment despite it being well overdue. “It’s not just about reducing traffic congestion on our roads – it will also improve safety and air quality in our community,” she said. “It’s crazy that we still move most of our containers out of the port one container at a time.” The Maribyrnong Truck Action Group welcomed the announcement, yet remains wary following a decade of broken promises about moving more freight to rail. Public Transport Users Association president Tony Morton said the “critical project” would mutually benefit freight operators and residents. “Right now, we have the absurd situation where bulk freight is railed in from regional Victoria – at a great saving of money, energy and emissions – but then has to be reloaded on to trucks for the last five kilometres into the dock area,” he said. The project is expected to be completed by 2019.
All hand hoy for fundraiser A pirate-themed family fundraising event inspired by a Williamstown mum with breast cancer will be held next month. The Nevertheless, She Persisted team has been formed as part of Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre’s OneDay to Conquer Cancer initiative, which is aimed at raising money for cancer research. The local team’s creation followed Williamstown mum Kellie Larsen’s early stage breast cancer diagnosis at the beginning of the year. When Ms Larsen found out about her diagnosis, her local community rallied around her with love, support and a lot of lasagne. “When I first got diagnosed, my youngest had just started prep, so as well as the changes in routine in our house, we suddenly had to contend with the enormity of the cancer treatment ahead,” Ms Larsen said. She said local parents were “absolutely amazing”, showing up with flowers, hugs, loads of food and child-minding offers for when she needed to go to appointments and even taking her out for regular walks around Williamstown. Ms Larsen and her team hope to raise $10,000 through donations and at the fundraising event at the Pirates Tavern at Seaworks, Nelson Place, in Williamstown on Sunday, September 9. Kids’ activities, silent auctions, a raffle and local band the Long and Short of It will feature in the event, which will run from 2-4pm. The team will also participate in the OneDay to Conquer Cancer walk or ride through the streets of Melbourne on October 29. Family entry to the Williamstown fundraising event will cost $10. Entry includes finger food and entertainment. Details: www.theoneday.org.au or 1300 449 255 Cath Wood, Kellie Larsen and Samantha Kellock. (Joe Mastroianni)

Tunnel ‘compo’ to fund river fix By Benjamin Millar The state government should chip in the $12.5 million needed to revitalise the Maribyrnong River to offset the impact of the proposed West Gate Tunnel Project, according to Maribyrnong council. A progress report on the Footscray River Edge Master Plan, to be considered at last night’s council meeting, noted the $5.5 million tollway project would have a negative impact on the river foreshore. The river plan was adopted in 2014 in a bid
to revitalise the waterfront, including the development of a major wharf and promenade for the section between Hopkins Street and Footscray Road. The plan includes a timber wharf and boardwalk with public moorings for small to medium vessels, an avenue of palm trees, new heritage interpretation features, improved lighting and gathering spaces with seating, picnic facilities and shelters. The progress report recommends council extending the plan south to connect with the Yarraville Gardens and pushing the state
government to provide $12.5 million in financial support “due to the impacts of the West Gate Tunnel project”. Star Weekly earlier this year reported that the council’s response to the tollway’s Environment Effects Statement highlighted “the detrimental visual and amenity impacts” the project would have on the Footscray Wharf area. The Planning Institute of Australia’s response was also critical of the “large new bridge structures” crossing the Maribyrnong River and the tollway’s impact on the riverside.

Pippy’s stardom is a very toothy tale not chew properly, so she had a lot of build up on her teeth.” Regular vet visits and prescribed dental chews breathed new life into Pippy’s dog breath. US dental expert Brook Niemiec, who is in Australia to promote Pet Dental Health Month, said dog breath was a warning sign. “It is a common misconception that bad dogs’ breath is normal, when in fact this is almost always caused by dental disease,” Dr Niemiec said. “I often treat dogs with severe dental disease because their pet owners are unaware of the symptoms.”

I love these girls.” And thanks to good dental care, the girls are surely just as happy and grinning back.
A Maribyrnong councillor has likened the federal government to Nazi Germany over proposed tightening of Australian citizenship laws. Councillors last Tuesday unanimously endorsed a motion moved by Sarah Carter opposing changes to extend residency requirements and toughening English language requirements to a university standard. The motion argued the changes, already passed by the lower house but requiring cross-bench support to move through the Senate, will “alienate sections of Australian society”. In supporting the motion, councillor Martin Zakharov said there was a long tradition by governments under threat to look for an enemy. “It’s the sort of behaviour we saw the Nazis undertake in Germany,” he said. “I think it’s something we are going to have to fight very hard over.” In moving the motion, Cr Carter labelled the flagged changes in the Australian Citizenship Legislation Amendment Bill 2017, including the requirement for “university level” English, as “elitist, discriminatory and unnecessary”. Councillor Cuc Lam, who arrived in Australia as a refugee in 1978, said she was “speaking from the heart” in condemning the changes. “I was one of the first wave of refugees to come to Australia and I’m very proud to be Australian,” she said. “I think a lot of migrants who come here want to contribute … they want to improve themselves and make this their home until they die, but English is not easy.” Benjamin Millar

Hockey upgrade moves forward By Benjamin Millar A long-awaited upgrade to the Footscray Hockey Centre has been locked in after Maribyrnong council endorsed a $1.25 million refurbishment. The 600-player Footscray Hockey Club (FHC) – the largest sporting club in Maribyrnong – has outgrown its current headquarters at McIvor Reserve in Yarraville. Plans have been drawn up to improve accessibility and storage and expand amenities for the growing number of junior and women’s teams.
The council allocated $440,000 in the 2016-17 budget for initial works and has secured $100,000 through a Sport and Recreation Victoria grant for more female change facilities. The FHC has committed a further $80,000 to the project. A surveyor report found completing the upgrade will cost an estimated $1.254 million, more than $300,000 above the most recently approved project budget of $920,000. Councillor Simon Crawford moved a motion in support of the project, seconded by councillor Martin Zakharov. “It’s important to do what we can to support

the sporting community, it’s really good to see that we have a really good representation of our community in this club,” Cr Crawford said. “The more we can be doing to improve the quality of these facilities the better.” Cr Zakharov said one of the most important aspects of sporting activity is its community value.
“Footscray Hockey Club have done a large amount over the years with limited funds,” he said. “Here’s a group that manage to do so much for the community on a voluntary basis. Our support for them is going to be great for the community.” Councillor Sarah Carter praised the club’s contribution to the community and said she was “impressed by the sophistication of this club” and its ability to fill more than 400 volunteer positions every year. Mayor Catherine Cumming said the club was long overdue for major works.
Boom time for fest city The Melbourne Fringe Festival is set to explode across the inner-west in dramatic fashion. The Kabooms will bring their chaotic and colourful show for kids to next month’s festival, joining an eclectic range of performances, talks and workshops for all ages. Other Fringe Westside program highlights will include a play by Thailand-based theatre company Peel the Limelight, in which the audience will remain blindfolded throughout the show. Footscray performer Stuart Bowden will be joining the Forest Exchange Lab in collaborating with UK-based risk-takers Forest Fringe in a series of events responding to local spaces and places. Invite Me to Play will ask young people to join artist Clare Walton on a journey that explores notions of play in public space. Tea with Chekhov is a collection of three
of Anton Chekhov’s famous short comedies while Potato Stamp Megalomaniac offers a kaleidoscopic remembering of a manic episode. On the music front, the Tim Franklin Trio uses saxophone, keyboards and drums to explore themes of modernity and isolation. Maribyrnong mayor Catherine Cumming said the festival line-up showed Maribyrnong was home to an increasingly creative community. “Through our Festival City and arts and culture programs, council is proud to support and foster the arts, which contribute to the cultural and civic richness of Maribyrnong,” she said. Fringe Westside takes place from September 14 to October 1. Details: festivalcity.com.au Benjamin Millar

Stella’s return too easy
Fine for tyre stockpile
(Joe Mastroianni)
By Benjamin Millar The wait is over for crime fiction fans hoping for the return of wisecracking social worker Stella Hardy. Footscray author J.M. Green has followed up her satirical crime debut Good Money with the second Hardy novel, Too Easy Easy. Green says the popular character has provided a way of bringing a fresh voice to the well-mined crime fiction genre. “I kind of felt like there wasn’t a great deal left to be said and thought it did need a new take,” she said. “I feel like the tone of the Stella Hardy series barely has a hold on reality, it’s kind of skewed, but is still able to explore ideas around power and who has it and who doesn’t.” Green says the character “really just arrived one day” and took on a life of her own. “I had been writing this tortured literary book and I got very frustrated; all the frustration and pent up feelings of injustice I had were put into this figure,” she said. “I have a lot of friends who work in community services or have some sort of social work background. They do this incredible work … and I really wanted to champion them.” Too Easy finds a determined Stella caught up in a police-corruption scandal, battling bike gangs, drug dealers and corrupt cops. Much of the action unfolds across western suburbs including Footscray and Sunshine, reflecting the author’s love of the area. “I have been living in Footscray for 20 years, but I still feel like I’m only living on the surface of what is here,” she said. “I also work in Brimbank in the library services, at Sunshine and St Albans and Deer Park, and I just feel a deep, irrational fondness for the area.” Too Easy is out now through Scribe Publications.

A Brooklyn company has been fined more than $7700 for posing a threat to the community by storing more than 20,000 waste tyres. The Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) slapped Somerville Road business Goodyear & Dunlop Tyres (Aust) Pty Ltd with a $7773 fine for unsafe tyre stockpiles in breach of industrial waste regulations. EPA metro manager Peter Kerr said the company is in breach of regulations limiting it to storing the equivalent of 5000 waste car tyres on the site without a license. “EPA officers found more than four times that amount stored on the site, which represents a potential fire hazard with the associated danger to people’s health and the environment,” he said. “The tyres stored at the site included a range of different types of … tyres, and were equivalent to more than 20,000 car tyres.” Tyre regulations were tightened in 2015 as a protection against the risk of tyre fires, vermin and other hazards. EPA regulations also require firefighting resources on-site as well as limits on the size of tyre piles and minimum distances between the piles. The EPA earlier this month fined a Spotswood company $7773 for stockpiling contaminated soil without a licence at its Simcock Avenue premises. CPB Contractors P/L was found stockpiling soil containing bricks, rocks, bluestone and demolition waste. Benjamin Millar

She has been with U3A Hobsons Bay-Williamstown – The University of the Third Age – since it started 25 years ago. Seniors come to pursue a wide variety of interests including computers, language, creative writing, arts, craft, jewellery-making, majong and bridge. A book club and a walking club are in the pipeline. Ms Joel mainly focuses on painting watercolours. “I think it’s a wonderful opportunity to be able to come to a place like this and mix with different people all the time and have conversations and opinions,” she said. Ms Joel, who was born on the Esplanade, sometimes regales her classmates with stories
about Williamstown’s history. “The beach has been my life, always,” she said. “We had a big house and we had a paddock beside us which had a cow, so we had our own milk. “We lived there until the Second World War started. I was 21 then and we had to leave Williamstown and go to Ascot Vale. And I said to my mother, ‘Where’s Ascot Vale, mum?’ “And she said, ‘The ends of the Earth’.” Tutor Ken Gratton said the social aspect was equally important to the learning. “We have tremendous discussions … they’re right up to date with everything.” The group meets on Fridays from 10am to noon at 83 Bayview Street, Williamstown. Program to fight pollution

Clever catch for schools By Stella Tzobanakis Emmanuel College in Altona was one of 47 schools and kindergartens in Melbourne’s west to receive part of an almost $90,000 funding pool to boost science and maths education. Altona Refinery manager Riccardo Cavallo said the contribution by Mobil’s Altona Refinery and Yarraville Terminal is part of its
annual Bright Future Grants program which aims to inspire a new generation of engineers and scientists. “Scientists and engineers are critical for addressing the challenges of 21st century life,” Mr Cavallo said. Mr Cavallo said the grants will enable kindergartens, primary and secondary schools to bolster their maths and science programs;
from buying new technology such as iPads and robotics kits, to funding science equipment, and environmental projects such as an interactive garden zone. Other recipients included Altona Primary School, Bayside College, Hyde Street Kindergarten, Kingsville Primary School, St Margaret Mary’s Primary School and Yarraville West Primary School.
City of Hobsons Bay residents can expect a closer eye on pollution problems. A new program has been developed to get Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) officers working even more closely with selected councils. The $4.8 million pilot program will involve the employment of officers for the protection of the local environment (OPLE) to be assigned to 13 councils – including Hobsons Bay – around the state. EPA metro manager Peter Kerr said OPLE and Hobsons Bay officers will respond to smaller-scale and lower risk waste and pollution complaints such as illegal dumping, litter, noise, dust and odour. “Their duties will also include responding to complaints, information and education activities to support prevention of pollution, and proactive inspections of premises to support compliance,” Mr Kerr said. “By taking a proactive, prevention-based approach, we are able to work together to improve the overall condition of Victoria’s environment.” Brimbank and Wyndham are the other councils in Melbourne’s west that joined the program. To apply for one of the OPLE positions call 1300 372 842 or visit www.epa.vic. gov.au/our-work/programs/ople-pilot Stella Tzobanakis

Grannies to the rescue
Plastic ban in the bag
By Stella Tzobanakis A group of Hobsons Bay women has banded together to help grandmothers across the globe who raise children orphaned by AIDS. The 20 Hobsons Bay residents – whose age ranges from 55 to 80 – have formed the first Grandmas Across Borders in Melbourne’s west. The group is a part of the Grandmothers to Grandmothers campaign which aims to raise money for African grandmothers to help them care for millions of children. The campaign is part of a worldwide movement – also called Grandmas Across Borders – which is under the umbrella of the Stephen Lewis Foundation. The foundation works with community organisations by providing care and support to women, orphaned children, grandmothers and people living with HIV and AIDS Stephen Lewis was a former United Nations special envoy for HIV/AIDS in Africa. In a mission statement Mr Lewis said: “We almost never think of the grandmothers, except in passing. Yet they are emerging as unheralded heroes of the continent. They’re poor, they’re old and they live with the inconsolable anguish of having buried their own children. They’re tired, they’re hungry and yet, they’re fast becoming the true, resilient, magnificent hearts of the struggle of the continent.” Hobsons Bay Grandmothers Across Borders chairperson Sandy Guest said the local group emerged following an overseas experience. “One of the group members spends a couple of months each year in Canada,” Ms Guest said. “On a trip last year, she spent time with a Canadian grandmother who is a member of a grandmother’s group.” Ms Guest said the Hobsons Bay group was motivated by the work of the foundation and

the idea of “grassroots grandmothers” making a difference. She said although the group was made up of Hobsons Bay women, men, and anyone from any suburb were welcome to join. Since their inception in July, the group has held one major fundraiser with another on the way. “The next major fundraiser will be the making of tote bags featuring African fabric that will be for sale at the local markets,” Ms Guest said.
The group also aims to raise awareness about African-Australian communities in Melbourne, and the foundation and its work. As part of this aim, a talk on the challenges and initiatives of African-Australians will be held at the Williamstown Senior Citizens Centre in Williamstown on Wednesday, August 30 at 1.15pm. For more information on the Hobsons Bay group or the talk, contact grandmasacrossborders@gmail.com.

Maribyrnong council is joining the chorus of support for a statewide ban on single use plastic bags. Councillors last week backed a motion by mayor Catherine Cumming calling on the Victorian government to join South Australia, Tasmania, Northern Territory, the ACT and Queensland in passing legislation to ban or limit the distribution of the bags. Cr Cumming’s motion noted that there was a growing move to ban plastic bags in the remaining states of Victoria, Western Australia and New South Wales. “It’s a simple step and something the community is calling out for,” she said. “They are wanting to ban single use bags … there is an appetite for this.” Cr Cumming said the community was looking to all levels of government to do more to tackle problems with waste. She called on the state and federal governments to stop “squabbling” over the issue and to take action. Councillor Simon Crawford seconded the motion. “I think plastic bags are a menace for our environment,” he said. “They end up in our creeks and rivers, down in the bay and in our parks.” Australians use an estimated six billion plastic bags every year. Woolworths and Coles last month announced they would be phasing out the bags in the next 12 months, ahead of a total ban by June 30 next year. Benjamin Millar

Joint approach to family violence By Stella Tzobanakis A strategy aimed to address the problem of violence against women, and its “steady increase’ in Melbourne’s west, has been devised. Preventing Violence Together 2030: Western Region Strategy to Prevent Violence Against Women – a regional partnership made up of 19 organisations who work together to prevent violence against women across Melbourne’s west – was launched at The Substation in Newport last week.
The strategy is a co-ordinated approach to preventing violence against women across Melbourne’s west, accompanied by an annual action plan and an evaluation plan. The strategy stated men’s violence against women in Australia was a human rights violation, with 39 per cent of women having experienced physical and/or sexual violence by a male perpetrator. It also emphasised men’s violence against women had a profound impact, causing numerous poor health, social, cultural and economic outcomes for women, their children
and the community. The strategy revealed there were “high rates of violence against women in Melbourne’s west”. Victoria Police data over the five-year period of October 2011 to September 2016 demonstrated a “steady increase in reported family violence incidents across the west”. During that period, there were 12,545 family violence incidents reported by Victoria Police for the western region representing “an increase of 10.1 per cent from the previous year”. Dr Robyn Gregory, chief executive of Women’s Health West, a lead partner in the
strategy, said the strategy marked an increased commitment to the long-term work required to prevent and eliminate violence against women. “The majority of intimate partner violence, sexual assault and family violence in Australia is perpetrated by men against women,” Dr Gregory said. “It’s a problem rooted in gender-based power inequalities between women and men. We know violence against women is preventable. “By working as part of this long established partnership across the west, we can take action to end men’s violence against women.”

I WANT THE CHURCH TO CHOOSE HOW LONG I SUFFER INTOLERABLE PAIN BEFORE I DIE. YES
NO
I’D RATHER CHOOSE. YES
NO
If you believe in choice, you must make your voice heard. Despite long-term public support, the last two decades have seen 30 attempts to pass a Voluntary Assisted Dying law fail. This is mainly due to fake news and fear campaigns, like the kind the Australian Christian Lobby and Right to Life group are spreading right now in Victoria. They are activating their members to pressure MPs to vote against Voluntary Assisted Dying laws. It’s a tactic that has worked many times before. But polls show that over 75% of Victorians support this law.
The law will be for competent adults with an incurable physical illness, which two doctors expect to cause death within 12 months, and is causing suffering that cannot be relieved. This is the most conservative law of its type proposed anywhere in the world. Those who oppose the law can choose not to use it.
So why should we all suffer for their beliefs? Make it clear to your local MP that this is a law you want. To join our campaign and find the contact details of your local MP visit
StopVictoriansSuffering.org.au
Why should any church decide for all of us? You need to make your voice heard now. Victoria’s politicians will soon vote on a Voluntary Assisted Dying law. Hearing directly from the public will make a difference.
IF YOU BELIEVE IN CHOICE, WE NEED YOUR VOICE.

King’s story finally told
Animal cruelty figures released
By Goya Dmytryshchak Hobsons Bay’s “Abalone King” is writing his memoirs about cycling through 17 countries to the 1956 Melbourne Olympics. Philadelphia-born Friedrich “Fred” Glasbrenner made international headlines when he rode his bicycle from Germany to Australia. Along the way, he told people he was writing a book and as a result received hospitality from some of the most famous names in the world at the time, including King Faisal II of Iraq, the Shah of Iran and Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. Now, he is actually writing that book. In 1938, when he was two, his German parents returned to their homeland to visit relatives but missed the last ship back to the US. They became stuck in Stuttgart during WWII, and had lost everything by 1944. At 16, Mr Glasbrenner and a friend jumped on their bikes and “shot through”, cycling through Switzerland and Italy before sailing to Tunisia. “That’s when I learned to dive, in 1952,” he said. “Four months later, they found us with Interpol in Africa.” He was sent back with “a kick up the backside” but “the seed was sown”. Just before Christmas 1955, Mr Glasbrenner was off again – this time with two friends headed for Melbourne for the Olympics. “We took off from our house without telling anybody where we were going to go and we jumped on our bike and off we went with 60 marks each in our pockets,” he said. In Aleppo they decided to start a journal and let people along the way contribute to the story. The lure of a mention in a book was like a magic passport into the homes of the rich and powerful including many heads of state.
Friedrich Glasbrenner, left, and his friend Theo Guth arrive in Melbourne in 1956. (The Age)
“That was our secret,” Mr Glasbrenner said. The first lady of Indonesia Ibu Fatmawati paid the fare to Darwin for Mr Glasbrenner and his friends. After making front page of The Age and The Argus, the City of Melbourne gave Mr Glasbrenner VIP tickets to the Olympics. Famous Australian names including
NEWS
Kenneth Myer (of department store fame) and Sir Reg Ansett are included in the book. Mr Glasbrenner decided to settle in Australia and became a fanatical skindiver before helping to establish the abalone industry in 1964. Until 2010, he ran the Abalone King restaurant in Williamstown, regularly hosting visiting international cycling champions.
More than 260 cases of animal cruelty in the inner-west have been reported to the RSPCA over the past year. Figures obtained from RSPCA Victoria reveal 147 reports concerning the welfare of animals in Maribyrnong and 126 in Hobsons Bay in the 12 months to June 30. RSPCA Victoria received 10,180 cruelty reports across the state in 2016-17, about 28 per day. Chief executive Dr Liz Walker said reports about animals not receiving basic care outnumbered all other offences. “It’s disappointing to see that, for the second year in a row, too many Victorian animals were reported to us because of concerns about very basic issues: food, water, shelter and vet care when they’re sick or injured. These kinds of problems are so preventable,” she said. Dr Walker said RSPCA Victoria has been working with local councils to understand local animal welfare issues and to better protect animals and educate owners. Of 147 reports in Maribyrnong, 108 involved dogs and puppies and 38 involved cats and kittens. Of 126 reports received in Hobsons Bay, 95 involved dogs and puppies, 28 involved cats and kittens and three involved horses. Dr Walker said most cases were resolved by inspectors educating owners and reminding them of their legal obligations to care for their animals.

MY PLACE Yarraville artist Katrina Tyler creates wearable and sculptural pieces inspired by the industrial landscape in and around Melbourne’s inner west. She speaks with Benjamin Millar. What’s your connection with Yarraville?
to Mexico in 1998 where we visited Taxco, the famous silver mining town. There were little studios scattered along winding paths through a wooded hillside, upon seeing jewellers at work I had my ‘I want to do that!’ moment. I dropped out of interior design and commenced gold and silversmithing, also at RMIT. Metalsmithing and contemporary jewellery allows me to draw on a long history of making techniques and processes, and has the potential to engage with new technologies and aesthetics. I love that I can play with scale and location, from the scale of the body, to public space, and that viewers get to wear and interact with the work.
My dad worked in Yarraville for about 15 years, and I’ve lived here since a moment of serendipity in 2008. After returning to Melbourne from three years living in Darwin, a rental fell through in Seddon and the next available place was above Dual hairdressing in the village, and we haven’t looked back. After about three years of renting in the village we eventually bought our current house on Anderson Street. What do you love best about the area?
What are your favourite local places? My favourite place is Cruikshank Park. I love how it cuts through the suburb and offers a slice of open space and native plantings perfect for a meander, power walk or bit of cloud spotting. Mosey is my favorite store, another green oasis, Common Galaxia is my favourite spot for a coffee, Footscray Community Arts Centre, Trocadero Art Space and Five Walls are my favourite for a fix of local art. We’re loving Friend or Pho for chicken ribs and pancakes. How has living here inspired and shaped your creative practice?
What can people expect from Container Container, your latest exhibition?
(Joe Mastroianni)
Pre-children it was very much about proximity to the city, lots of cafes and restaurants opening, the Sun Theatre and feeling a part of the thriving and changing inner west. Now we have two children, the abundance of parks, proximity to Williamstown beach and strength of the local community have all come into their own.
Finding moments of beauty in my everyday encounters, especially within the built environment, has played a huge part in my work from the beginning. Living in our area, I’ve spent a lot of time contemplating shipping containers, factories, freight trains, trucks and oil tanks, and have been inspired by the colours, repetition, order, textures and moments of dilapidated beauty and sculptural qualities they reveal. Working in metal, I’ve felt
a material connection to the area, and wanted to emulate the colourful, ordered, dilapidated and distressed aesthetic in my work. What drew you to working with jewellery, sculpture and public art? I’ve always been a ‘maker’ and loved jewellery and sculptural forms. While studying interior design at RMIT I went on a design studio trip
Visitors can expect a vibrant and colourful array of wearable and sculptural pieces that reflect the colours, textures and forms I’m drawn to in our local industrial landscape. Stacks of shipping containers, freight trains and corrugated iron-clad factories and warehouses have directly influenced the work. I hope visitors get a sense of the moments of beauty and interest I see in our location and landscape and take away a snapshot of what contemporary jewellery and metalwork can offer. Container will be showing at Trocadero Art Space as part of Radiant Pavilion 2017, Melbourne’s contemporary jewellery and object biennial. It opens 6pm Wednesday, August 30, with artist talk and drinks 4-6pm Saturday, September 16.

FOOD REVIEW
CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir enjoys a tasty reminder of Footscray heritage It’s all very easy to take the likes of the late Jim Wong’s establishment – and the nearby Poon’s – for granted, surrounded as they are by colourful, delicious and affordable options of the more recently arrived Vietnamese, African and even Indian varieties. They can conjure up, in the minds of the world weary or cynical, mental visions of tiresomely old-school food that has passed its use-by date. But we’re not averse to an RSL or bowls club roast lunch and the like. So we’re very happy indeed to front for a mid-week dinner at Jim Wong, something that is somewhat belated in terms of the history of CTS. And a fine time we have. We love it – the menu, the decor, the furniture, just about everything. We love that there is real linen on the tables – and we even love it that we have to request chop sticks. The food? Well, mostly we love that, too. We like the possibilities evoked by the nicely priced banquet line-up that ranges in price from $25 and upwards. But the meat courses feature dishes with satay sauce, in which we are not interested. Likewise, we know – based on unsatisfactory experiences in other places and at other times – not to order dishes with a South-East Asian heritage, so we ignore the Jim Wong offerings of char kwai teow and Hokkien noodles. Short soup ($5) is, as Bennie declares, “plain but good”.
JIM WONG RESTAURANT Address: 259 Barkly Street, Footscray Phone: 9687 5971 Of the two wontons I try, one is doughy, the other is lovely, with the very austere broth being quite different from those found in the nearby Vietnamese joints. BBQ roast pork ribs ($8) are fabulous. There’s only a couple of pieces of bone and/or gristle. The meat is well-cooked, but nicely short of dry and the flavours are a kick, all abetted by a rich, dark sticky sauce. Beef with black bean sauce ($23) is just OK – we’d like quite a bit more sharp zing from the sauce and the price seems a bit steep. No such problems with the Chinese broccoli with garlic sauce ($13.50). This is the dish we have been most eagerly anticipating and we are not disappointed. We’ve eaten well and enjoyed what are, for us, unusual circumstances. And while we’ve paid a little more than we would for an equivalent spread elsewhere in Footscray, we’re happy to have done so, taking on board a tasty reminder of a still-thriving emblem of Footscray heritage.

A landmark grocery store oozing period charm has been cleverly converted into a quality, fashionable four-bedroom residence. In the heart of village life, the double-brick facade has been restored; ghost advertising on the exterior wall adding to its charming character. Within, polished concrete floors, restored pressed-metal, five-metre ceilings and gorgeous wet spaces add to the allure. A generous meals area with built-in storage opens to a further space adjacent to the kitchen, that although ’50s in its style, is a contemporary fit-out and blends seamlessly into the property’s story. Two of the four bedrooms have built-in robes, one with a stained glass period sash window and cast fireplace, the fourth originally a store room that could double as a study. Inclusions are solar panels, R36 wool insulation, a backyard studio and fruit trees.
Renovated to create a spacious and stylish profile, this four-bedroom, two bathroom property is in the heart of Williamstown. Floorboards, plantation shutters, a countrymeets-contemporary fitout and great kitchen are hallmarks of the renovation. Enter to the large, downlit lounge room with hardwood floors and split-system. The kitchen features country-chic cabinetry, stainless-steel work benches and navy blue splashback tiling that matches the feature wall in the meals area adjacent. Two bedrooms with built-in robes are on this level, as is the main bathroom. The huge main bedroom with wall-length built-in robe and sky-lit en suite and fourth bedroom (with access to a large roof storage space) are upstairs. Close to Douglas Parade, The Strand, water’s edge, schools and transport, life-logistics will be a breeze living here.

This property’s federation-revivalist facade does not do the interior spaces justice. Well-designed for family living, the house has a recently updated contemporary kitchen hardwood floors and high ceilings. The floorplan includes two living areas, one with a gas fireplace in a timber surround. There are three bedrooms with hardwood floorboards (main with en suite and walk-in robe), separate studio space and a decked courtyard which is alive with greenery thanks to a resident green thumb. The backyard space continues beyond with room for kids to play. The house is set at the rear of a battle-axed block close to schools, shops, cafes, parks, and transport, and has a double carport.
A block back from the beach in one of the most desirable pockets of Altona, this unit is handily located on Queen Street. The property’s brick facade and multi-paned windows are pleasant and the front garden is neat. A well-placed carpeted return living area leads to a large and light-filled tiled meals area. The simple yet well-maintained and light-filled kitchen is, again, easy to modernise. Both bedrooms are fitted and carpeted. The front yard is on title, so is well placed for enclosure and the creation of a private courtyard. The property has a single garage and is within walking distance of all there is to love about this beach-side community. The nearby beach, dog parks, cafes, schools and a choice of two train stations make this a fine opportunity.

Property of the week
WILLIAMSTOWN 93 Thompson Street, 3016 Raine and Horne Williamstown: 9397 6167 This historically significant bluestone is a slice of Williamstown history. Enter another world with the whitewashed, original bluestone walls and beautifully historic working fireplace in the front room – now a dedicated library with floor-to-ceiling bookshelves. It sets a tone only ever created by time itself. This bluestone was built in 1863 and has been renovated twice over the past 25 years, creating modern family spaces sensitive to its heritage. The first of three bedrooms is to the left of the library and no doubt soaks up some of the warmth from the fire. Slab heating,

however, ensures everyone’s warm. Walk through a doorway where original architraves lead to the second living space – the sitting room with a second fireplace. Look through the original multi-paned sash window to the industrial-style courtyard, with plenty of hard-wearing tropicals, Castlemaine slate paving and an in-ground pool with frameless glass safety fence. The contemporary extension including a rustic-style shed, wraps around this outdoor space. Turn left to another century-old doorway, through which is the extension and heart of the home.
The polished concrete flooring, coloured in a mild earthy tone before pouring, complements the thoroughly modern spaces with soaring ceilings beyond. The kitchen has stainless-steel benchtops, drawer storage, four doors of pantry space and a small study nook. It faces the meals area and lounge room, which features the third fireplace with a Castlemaine slate surround, seat and woodstore. Picture-window style timber and glass sliding doors open along the full length of the hall, with the wall opposite comprising hidden storage.
1
The bathroom has a rustic-style vanity, toilet and a custom-made shower bath set by the concrete designer during renovations. Beyond is an internal water feature with steel installation by renowned metal artists Peter and Chelly Gray. The second bedroom also has a window overlooking this feature. The main bedroom at the end of the hall has a walk-in robe and a built-in robe. Located two blocks from the foreshore, this is a house of warmth, space and style. Sam Freestone

SPORT Altona lets finals hope slip away Altona suffered a 2-0 loss to finals-bound MCC in the Hockey Victoria women’s premier league at the Altona Hockey Centre on Saturday. Consecutive losses to top-four teams has shown the Seagulls are just a class below the teams that will be fighting it out for the premiership in September. One team that is well and truly in the mix is Footscray. The Bulldogs consolidated their spot in the top eight with a 9-0 shellacking of Waverley away at Hedley Hull Field. It was a goal feast for the Bulldogs players with five individuals getting on the scoresheet, including a hat-trick to Olivia Colasurdo and doubles to Esther Fithall and Monica Singh. Footscray will travel to MCC for a blockbuster
on Saturday, while Altona makes the short trip to Essendon. In men’s premier league, Altona has jumped up to fourth after a 6-3 hammering of MCC at home. The Seagulls spread the goals around with Pat Phillips the only multiple goalscorer with two. Altona will take plenty of momentum on the road to Essendon on Sunday. Footscray secured a finals berth with a narrow 2-1 win over Waverley. Rufus McNaught-Barrington and Liam Braithwaite found the back of the net for the Bulldogs. The Bulldogs play MCC on Saturday. Lance Jenkinson
IN THE DOGHOUSE ■ The
final round of WRFL senior home and away matches provided many memorable highs and lows. In division 3, North Sunshine pulled off a remarkable win over flag favourite Parkside, but with Sunshine Heights beating Wyndham Suns, North Sunshine’s quest for a finals spot was thwarted, the Roadrunners missing out by half a game. Albanvale clinched a final four spot ahead of Newport Power in division 2 by defeating Manor Lakes, and will face the same team this week in an elimination final. The drama was even greater in division 1. Sunshine inflicted only the second defeat of the season on reigning premier Deer Park and in the process secured third spot and a double chance. Hoppers Crossing was in the mix to finish third, but – despite winning handsomely against Wyndhamvale – missed the double chance by a mere 2.9 per cent, the Warriors ruing their final quarter fade-out against the Falcons. Werribee Districts went into the final game with little expectation of extending its season, and this looked even less likely when Albion led by 10 points at three-quarter time. Werribee needed to win and also needed eighth-placed St Albans to defeat fifth-placed Altona to snatch fifth spot. Werribee triumphed by 18 points but its finals fate was hanging in the balance. St Albans won by a point, meaning Werribee will face Hoppers Crossing in an elimination final this Sunday.

■ Congratulations
Vikings fail to capitalise By Lance Jenkinson Altona’s harrowing one-point final round loss to St Albans that cost it a spot in the Western Region Football League division 1 finals was symptomatic of a season-long problem for the team. The Vikings only had to beat the lowly Saints on the road at Kings Park Reserve on Saturday to reach the finals, but were upset in the most dramatic fashion, failing to find the late goal they needed to defend fifth spot, despite pressing hard in the last quarter. Vikings coach Saade Ghazi reckons the performance against the Saints was a microcosm of what his team had produced for most of an up and down season when it came to their appetite to win. “It wasn’t just about this week,” Ghazi said. “We haven’t been as desperate or as hungry as we were last year and that’s the best way to sum up the whole season. “When you lose a lot of close games, it comes down to having the desire to want to win.” Altona began the weekend odds-on to reach the finals. When they could not get the job done against St Albans, they had to rely on Werribee Districts losing.
WRFL finals – week one Division 1 Qualifying final: Spotswood v Sunshine Elimination final: Hoppers Crossing v Werribee Districts Division 2 Qualifying final: North Footscray v Yarraville Seddon Elimination final: Manor Lakes v Albanvale Division 3 Qualifying final: Parkside v Wyndham Suns Elimination final: Tarneit v Sunshine Heights Unfortunately for the Vikings, Werribee came back from 33 points down at half-time to beat Albion and eliminate them from the finals race. “Not playing finals this year has definitely been a disappointment,” Ghazi said. “Our reserves and under-19s finished with a double chance and our under-17s won a flag today, so the actual club is going well, but at the top end, the senior team was definitely a failure.
Altona wasted a bevy of goal scoring chances to beat St Albans. The Vikings kicked an inaccurate 11.21, including 3.8 in the last term. The defeat has left everyone with purple and gold coursing through their veins devastated. “Everyone was gutted, not just the players, you’ve got to think of all the committee and the hard work they do, the volunteers,” Ghazi said. “This year has been a complete waste of a year of footy.” Ghazi will undertake a total review of the football operations and the playing roster. Too many players for his liking did not show the same kind of hunger they displayed in his first year in charge. “We’ve got to get that hunger back, blokes who are hungry for success,” Ghazi said. In other final round matches, Spotswood kicked nine last-quarter goals to record a blow-out 67-point win over Caroline Springs at Town Centre Oval. In division 2, minor premiers North Footscray predictably downed wooden spooners West Footscray by 81 points in the local derby, while Yarraville Seddon knocked Newport Power out of the finals with a 68-point win. In division 3, top-placed Parkside suffered a shock 26-point loss to North Sunshine, while Laverton went down by 117 points to Tarneit.
■ I’m
sad to report the passing of John Hibbs, a member of the inaugural senior team of the Albion Football Club in the old FDFL. John was a passionate Bulldogs member and a keen and talented golfer. His son, Anthony, was a senior player at Werribee Cricket Club for many years and John a regular member on the Hill. To his wife Deane and the family, my sincere condolences. Kevin Hillier

Jets back with a shot at TAC Cup finals Consecutive wins for the first time this TAC Cup season have the Western Jets back in the finals picture. The Jets finished strongly to beat the Northern Knights by 16 points in a low-scoring affair at Rams Arena in Craigieburn on Saturday. Suddenly, the Jets are in with a sniff of finals, with two wins in the remaining two rounds likely to be enough to have them in the top eight come September. But Jets coach Torin Baker was playing down any talk of finals, preferring to focus on the process, rather than a potential end result. “From our mid-year review, we set a couple of areas we thought we could get better and we’ve really honed in on them and made it the key focus,” Baker said. “If we can tick off those off by the end of the year, regardless of wins and losses, we’ll be happy with that.” Western Jets have enjoyed a more settled line-up in recent weeks. The presence of star players Cameron Rayner and Lachlan Fogarty has been a huge bonus. Not only are they prolific ball winners for
the Jets, they are shining as team leaders and their appetite for success is rubbing off on teammates. Rayner and Fogarty both snared two goals to go with their high possession count. “I think both Fogs and Cam are just super passionate about playing for the Jets and doing their absolute best,” Baker said. “They’re really invested in the program, which is terrific. “It’s a reflection of the way they go about their footy and they’ll do that at whatever footy club they play for.” While the Western Jets have strengthened their top end, it was a rookie who stole the show in the win over the Knights. Darcy Cassar, an under-16 Vic Metro representative, produced four first half goals in an electric display. Cassar was able to find avenues to goal in a variety of ways, including two crumbing goals, one from a set shot after a strong body on body mark and one on the run. “He’s a pacy boy with good physicality as well,” Baker said.
“He’s got good speed and endurance and a bit of forward craft.” Luke Hitch set the scene with his physicality on the man and aggression at the ball, while Zak Butters and Nick Stuhldreier rounded out the Jets best players. Connor Thar bobbed up for a vital fourth term goal. All the Jets can do is win if they want to play in the finals. Their clash with eighth-placed Gippsland Power at Morwell Recreation Reserve on Saturday is one of two do-or-die encounters to come for the Jets. The trip to Morwell will be a special one for Jack Papachatzakis, who is likely to return from an ACL injury. Papachatzakis, who played for the Jets in his bottom-age year, is the only player on the list to not play a game this season because of his injury. “Jack’s a ripping kid who’s been totally dedicated towards his rehab and committed to the Jets in every way he goes about it,” Baker said. “It will be good to give him an opportunity next week.” Lance Jenkinson
World beckons for teen By Lance Jenkinson Teagan Newman has made extraordinarily fast progress as a weightlifter. A year ago, Newman was using the sport as an extra training strand to bolster her athletics career, in which she excelled at the discus and hammer throw. After a chat with track and field coach Brent Vallance about her potential as a weightlifter, Newman decided to change course and take up weightlifting full-time. Since then, the personal best lifts and the honours have been stacking up for Newman, confirming to her that weightlifting is where her future lies. Newman’s first major competition was last year’s national championships, in which she delivered an eye-opening fourth-place finish. That was achieved on one day a week training and without the expert guidance of the coaches at the Hawthorn Weightlifting Club. At that stage, Newman was lifting about 112 kilograms, but that has improved exponentially in the months since. “Now my PB is 137 kilograms,” Newman said. “To see my improvement over the nine months or so before I got the PB, it showed me that I can progress in leaps and bounds over the next few years. If I can improve that quickly, it will be good to see how I can improve over the next few years.” Newman represented Victoria for a second time on the national stage this year. Her lift of 137 kilograms was enough to take out the 69-75 kilogram class. The 19-year-old is now rated one of the rising stars of Australian weightlifting. “It was great to see my improvement over the months because I didn’t expect to go to nationals and win,” Newman said. “I actually won by 16 kilograms. “They have a rankings system on the Australian Weightlifting Federation site and I’m ranked sixth in Australia for most improved.” Newman, a postwoman from Hoppers Crossing, has qualified to represent Australia at the Commonwealth Oceania Junior Championships on the Gold Coast next month. “That’s my first big step,” said Newman, who is coached by Anthony Dove. “I’m quietly nervous, but I’m determined to do the best that I can. I’m hoping to go out there and get another PB because I’ve been training hard for it.” Newman is targeting Australian representation for next year’s World Junior Championships. She thinks the 2018 Commonwealth Games is out of reach, but is determined to make it to the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.

Newman is the August nominee of the Deeble Rising Star Award. The award, hosted by the Sunshine Western Region Sports Club and Star Weekly Weekly, recognises young athletes from the western suburbs who

have achieved outstanding results at state and/ or national levels. Newman will receive $1000, donated by the Yarraville Club Cricket Club, and other prizes to assist her in achieving her sports goals.
Altona Magic’s Ben Clarke rises to win the header. (Damjan Janevski)
Magic sweats on results It was a Saturday of wildly contrasting emotions for Altona Magic, but ultimately nothing changed from the start of the day until the end. The Magic maintained its five-point gap over second-placed Geelong, who have a game in hand, in the Football Federation Victoria men’s state league 1 standings. All the Magic could wish for at day’s end was to have their title and promotion destiny in their own hands. That scenario was looking a tad bleak at 5pm, having been left frustrated in a nil-all draw with Keilor Park on the road at Keilor Park Recreation Reserve. The Magic huffed and they puffed, but could not find a way past Keilor Park goalkeeper Chris Tsonis. For 30 minutes at least, the Magic ceded control of their own destiny, having to wait for what damage may come when second-placed Geelong squared off with Sydenham Park in the 5.30pm kick-off. It wasn’t as bad as advertised for the Magic, with Sydenham Park doing them a favour and drawing 2-2 with Geelong. It could be a significant result in the title race. It means that should Altona win its last two games, it will get its hands on the title, and, more importantly, be promoted to the National Premier League. Geelong will play its catch-up game against Altona East Phoenix at Paisley Park on Saturday. It’s a last chance saloon for the Phoenix, who could be relegated if they don’t snare all three points. The Phoenix went down 2-0 to third-last Yarraville Glory at home on Saturday. The Glory are likely safe, but can put their survival beyond doubt with a draw in one of their last two games. In men’s state league 2, Altona City defended its spot at the top of the ladder with a 4-1 win over Westvale at Kim Reserve. Ayodeji Omoboye scored a double for City, taking his tally to 14 for the campaign. In men’s state league 3, Williamstown produced one of the most outrageous scorelines of the season, beating Melbourne City 19-0 in the local derby. Bobby Lojanica scored 10 goals in an incredible display, there was a hat-trick for Craig Moss and doubles for Aleksandar Dimitrijevic and Alex Vlassis. In men’s state league 4, Altona North had its best win of the season, sending Sebastopol Vikings hurtling from the top of the ladder in a 3-2 win at Duane Reserve, while in state league 5, Laverton Park, sparked by four goals from former NSL striker Juan Nilo, secured promotion with a 5-0 blitz over Melbourne Lions.
