Club past president Dave Pettet said the council could have put in a case for social use and submitted a very small nominal figure, believed to be as low as $1. “Having got the many sporting codes, state government and a major landowner aligned for the good of the community, it’s frustrating to find that this project was seemingly torpedoed by the council executive,” he said. AFL Victoria chairman Ray Horsburgh said a golden opportunity had gone to waste. “We’re all disappointed,” he said. “As a group of junior sports organisations – and it was widespread between Australian football, soccer, tennis, netball, basketball – the whole junior organisations in the city were

united because this was a golden opportunity to enhance junior sport in the city. “I think it fell through because the council didn’t really put their shoulder to the wheel and the government just showed a little bit of politeness but weren’t prepared to get off their arse and put any money into it.” Councillor Peter Hemphill, who was on the working group for the proposal, said the municipality was now left struggling with a “massive shortfall” of sporting facilities. “This was a missed opportunity and we’re going to pay very, very dearly if it can’t be resurrected,” he said. “I was told by Mobil that we could have put in a bid for $1.”

Hobsons Bay council has declined an opportunity to bid $1 for a large parcel of Mobil land to build a multi-sports complex, leaving sports clubs furious. High-level negotiations to build a Hobsons Bay sports centre on 16.7 hectares at the corner of Maddox and Kororoit Creek roads have fallen through, leaving many questions unanswered. The sports proposal, developed between five codes, included 24 tennis courts, 16 netball courts, two football ovals, four basketball courts and four soccer pitches, one of which could double for lacrosse.

Mobil is currently managing a closed tender process following a public expression of interest campaign for the development of the land. Spokesman Travis Parnaby said Mobil had supported the land being used for a sports precinct and following the council’s participation in the EoI process, it had been invited to tender for the development. “We are aware that council has declined the offer to participate in the tender for this property,” Mr Parnaby said. Hobsons Bay’s chief executive Chris Eddy could not say why. “Due to confidentiality requirements I am unable to comment any further,” Mr Eddy said. House prices soar across west By Goya Dmytryshchak Altona has joined the million-dollar club, the latest house prices from the Real Estate Institute of Victoria show. The June quarter was the first time Altona recorded a median house price of $1 million or higher, surging 14.8 per cent to $1,025,000. The suburb joins the likes of Newport, Spotswood and Williamstown. Across the city of Maribyrnong, the suburb

of Maribyrnong had the strongest growth, climbing 17.9 per cent to its peak median of $1,155,000. Kingsville, which first topped $1 million in March, grew another 5.9 per cent to record the suburb’s highest median of $1,149,000. REIV acting president Richard Simpson said suburbs within Melbourne’s middle ring continued to see strong price growth. “The municipalities of Maribyrnong and Hobsons Bay are increasingly attractive to

home buyers, offering quality infrastructure and amenities within close proximity to the city,” he said. “A number of suburbs in these municipalities already have median house prices of $1 million or more. “However Laverton and Altona Meadows continue to offer affordable buying.” Suburbs yet to break the million-dollar barrier include Altona Meadows ($660,000), Altona North ($855,000), Braybrook ($745,000),

Footscray ($947,500), Laverton ($557,500), Maidstone ($793,000), South Kingsville ($995,000) and West Footscray ($930,000). However, all except Maidstone recorded their highest median growth last quarter. The suburbs of Newport ($1.2 million), Seddon (down 10.8 per cent to $917,000), Spotswood ($1,013,000) and Yarraville ($1,101,000) joined the million-dollar club last December, while Williamstown ($1,328,500) is its oldest local member after 12 quarters.

A life-long love of dance and the care of her family have paved the way for a happy 100 years for Yarraville’s Mary Lester. The sprightly centenarian, who reached the magic milestone on Monday, said she had been delighted to receive a letter from the Queen to mark the occasion. “I was very surprised, I wasn’t expecting it because I didn’t think she did that any more.” A special afternoon tea party for Mary was held with other residents at Doutta Galla Aged Services on Monday, following a tea party with family on Sunday afternoon. Mary said although it has been 40 years since her retirement, she has always remained very active. “Ever since I was eight years old when I ran in my very first inter-schools championship, I have loved to be active,” she said. “I went to my first gym when I was nine and I kept going right through until I was 91. I did a lot of ballroom dancing and would even dance here when they had entertainment.” Mary grew up in London and moved to Australia in 1983 to be closer to her only daughter. She now enjoys nothing more than seeing her family and keeping up with news about their lives. “All my interest is in seeing my daughter and two grandsons and great-grandchildren who come here to visit me,” she said. “I don’t think many great-grandparents get the chance to see their great-grandchildren in the same way.” Benjamin Millar

A cyclist left for dead in a hit-and-run in Footscray has praised the community for its outpouring of support since the incident. Cyclist Christobal Valencia, 46, was riding to work about 8.20am last Thursday when he was T-boned by a white Toyota Corolla at the intersection of Lyons and Whitehall streets. Left bruised and battered by the crash, the South Kingsville resident said only his helmet saved him from more serious injury. “The driver just pulled out on me and I hit the bonnet with my head then rolled straight onto my head,” he said. “My helmet pretty much cracked in half. My leg had no feeling at first and I was just lying there wondering if I had been paralysed.” Mr Valencia thought a man who approached him and contacted paramedics was the driver, before learning that the driver had fled the scene without stopping. Mr Valencia was rushed to hospital by ambulance and underwent extensive testing before being given the all-clear. He is calling for anyone with any information to come forward and for the driver to hand himself in. He said the community response had been overwhelming and a bright side to the otherwise traumatic experience. “It’s the spirit of Melbourne. Toxic blaze sparks local probe By Alexandra Laskie Fire risks and storage issues have been identified at a second site owned by the recycling company at the centre of a major toxic blaze burning for five days in Melbourne’s north. The Environment Protection Authority discovered a “backlog of unsorted waste” at SKM Recycling’s Laverton North plant on Friday. More than 100 households were told to evacuate on Thursday night as fire at the company’s Coolaroo plant took hold.

EPA Victoria, Wyndham council and the Metropolitan Fire Brigade inspected SKM Recycling’s Laverton North plant on Friday to “hold SKM to account” and assess fire hazards and stormwater contamination at the recycling centre in Gilbertson Road. The Friday inspection of a “backlog of unsorted waste” at the facility has led the EPA to serve SKM three notices, starting with demands for a temporary sorting line to clear the build-up of waste. The company must also provide the EPA with details of waste volumes it has accepted, processed and sold at Laverton

North, and to verify claims it has made about market demand for sorted recycling materials. The EPA has also demanded safety measures be installed to protect stormwater from runoff from unwashed rubbish. EPA chief executive Nial Finegan said: “The EPA is committed to holding SKM, and other operators of similar sites, to account”. He said EPA staff met SKM company director Robert Italiano at Laverton on Friday “to gain an understanding of waste movements”, and warned that its plants in Geelong and Hallam would also be inspected.

The fire at SKM’s recycling plant in Coolaroo continues to smoulder and is not expected to be fully extinguished for “several days”, an MFB spokeswoman said. It was declared under control on Saturday. SKM’s Coolaroo plant services 14 councils in Victoria and processes more than 500 tonnes of waste each weekday. Its Laverton North facility is one of two transfer stations used for transporting recyclables from the local area to Coolaroo for processing. – The Age

A social enterprise is running its first walking tour of “the real” Williamstown next month, where the guides are people who were once homeless. Williamstown resident Jo Jenkins started No Fixed Address City Tours about three years ago, providing jobs for those who have experienced homelessness, were unemployed or living in supported housing. Sixty five per cent of ticket sales go directly to the guides. “I wanted to bring an employment opportunity to these people as well as create a really good walking tour of inner suburban Melbourne,” Ms Jenkins said. “I wanted to work specifically with a particular cohort of people that I think are really marginalised and really find it quite a struggle to get back in to employment because of the lack of experience, the lack of education, the stigma attached to homelessness [and] some of the by-products of it.”

Cyclists are peddling an ambitious proposal to return a velodrome to a neglected West Footscray park. The centrepiece of the proposed Maribyrnong Community Cycling Hub is the return of a cycling track that existed at Hansen Reserve from the mid-1930s until being torn up by Maribyrnong council about a decade ago. The project is outlined in a submission to the council as it prepares a new Hansen Reserve Master plan, due to include a major upgrade to the playground and other park and open space improvements.

Project advocate John Symons said the plan is to reinstate the velodrome track and include an education centre for bike skills and maintenance courses for all ages and abilities. “The idea has evolved from being a cycling training and racing venue to having a more inclusive hub for teaching young kids and other people who are not feeling safe or confident on the roads,” he said. “We are trying to get the message across about the problems with the lack of activity for people and the health costs.” The project is backed by a number of key parties, including Footscray Cycling Club, Footscray City College and the Seddon Community Bank. Mr Symons, who was instrumental in a mountain biking course being incorporated into plans for the revitalisation of Footscray’s

Quarry Park, said a cycling track could be returned to Hansen Reserve for as little as $200,000, because much of the banking from the original velodrome is still in place. “Some velodromes have steep banking and a concrete structure with lots of reinforcing, but we envisage resurfacing the existing lower

A parody Facebook page for Footscray’s Sims IGA supermarket has attracted more than 7000 followers in a week. The page emerged as Star Weekly reported insolvency firm Rodgers Reidy had been appointed voluntary administrators of the troubled operation, placing the still-trading Footscray and Werribee stores on the market. It has caused some confusion, with a few people presuming it is officially affiliated with the long-running store. The page’s tongue-in-cheek posting has attracted international attention, including posts from LA-based singer-songwriter Ben Lee quashing suggestions he would be appearing at Footscray Hotel to headline a “Save Sims” barbecue benefit concert. The page administrators, who elected to remain anonymous, told Star Weekly they are regular shoppers at Sims. “Sims symbolises the positive culture of Footscray: competitive prices, friendly service and community spirit.” The first meeting of the company’s creditors was held on Tuesday. Two leadlight windows from Williamstown Swimming and Life Saving Club are featured in an exhibition about Australia’s identity at the National Gallery of Victoria. The windows, depicting the tradition of lifesaving in the 1930s, were donated by two prominent Williamstown councillors when the club opened in 1935. Vice-president Toni Burton said the club was approached by the NGV to loan the windows for an exhibition titled Brave New World: Australia 1930s. “[The exhibition] talks about those interwar years and the slightly turbulent nature of society,” she said. “You’ve got the Depression and those sorts of things happening, and it was also a point when Australian identity as we now

Heritage Victoria is working with Maribyrnong council to ensure the preservation of heritage buildings of state significance. Maribyrnong MP Marsha Thomson said there is concern the federal government will seek to maximise profit at the expense of existing and future residents. “The concern is that this decision will lead to an overdevelopment of the site; we still have grave concerns about how this progresses.” Opposition leader and Maribyrnong MP Bill Shorten said the process is “a complete and utter shambles” with “zero transparency”. “All they want to do is make a quick buck and it’s the Maribyrnong community which will suffer,” he said.

The state government has vowed to work with residents in shaping development of the former Maribyrnong Defence site, as the Federal government moves ahead with the sale of the badly contaminated land. The state’s development arm Development Victoria spent years negotiating for the 127-hectare site before being dumped by the federal government in May, in favour of an open tender process. Federal treasurer Scott Morrison described the site as suitable for 6000 new homes – double the previously flagged estimate of 3000 homes. “There will be social housing on this site. There will be housing for key workers on this site. There will be housing for private buyers, private renters, first-home buyers – all of that can be realised on an integrated development on a site like this,” Mr Morrison said. Decontamination of the site is predicted to cost up to $500 million, fuelling concerns the high clean-up cost will drive up the site’s density without adequate infrastructure to meet the growth. A $2.5-billion vision for the land has already been revealed by Chinese developer Zhongren, but the successful tenderer is yet to be announced. Visiting the site on Thursday, Premier Daniel Andrews said whoever wins the tender will need to submit a detailed planning application that conforms to planning rules. “While the federal government just

wants to make a profit, we want to see new neighbourhoods – close to the city – and with new services to match,” he said. “We will ensure people’s voices are heard when it comes to preparing plans for the Maribyrnong site.” Mr Andrews said the Victorian Planning Authority will prepare a detailed planning scheme for the site and the EPA will be involved in the decontamination process.

Police plead for bashing clues

Five years ago this week, Altona bookshop owner Jill Brookes was bashed and left for dead in the aisle of her Harrington Square store. Despite a $100,000 reward for information offered by Victoria Police, her near-fatal bashing remains unsolved. Ms Brookes, then aged 61, was discovered by a fellow trader about 5pm on July 20, 2012, in a pool of blood inside West Side Stories, now a laundrette. The attack has left her with severe brain damage and unable to properly communicate. Detective Senior Constable Matt Noonan said Ms Brookes was in a high-care facility. “Certainly, she requires 24-hour-a-day care, most likely for the rest of her life,” he said. “Her quality of life has been affected significantly.” Police were hampered by the crime scene being covered in customers’ fingerprints, contaminating it with too much DNA. Investigators are still interested in speaking to the owner of a white tray truck seen in a rear lane off Harrington Square. On May 21, 2013, a letter was dropped into Altona North police station containing news clippings from the Weekly and a “somewhat cryptic” message from cut-out letters. A second letter addressed to Altona police, again with letters cut from the Weekly Weekly, was placed in the letterbox of an Altona home on July 2, 2013. It contained a sum of money. “Clearly somebody knows something and they’re reluctant to come forward, but we’re

New west fest now due A guerrilla opera cruise, a scandalous all-girl Sherlock Holmes cabaret and performances at the Franco Cozzo furniture store will all feature as part of the west’s newest arts festival. Due West: Immersive Arts Festival, from August 10-27, will include a series of interactive performances, exhibitions and installations across a range of familiar and surprising Maribyrnong locations. The annual arts festival has been created to fill the void left by the sudden end of the Big West Festival after 20 years. Maribyrnong council has allocated $85,000 to the new festival, matched by the state government via Creative Victoria. Due West will open with a weekend triple-bill of music at Footscray Community Arts Centre.

The program includes a night of Asian- and African-tinged jazz when Seddon trumpeter and composer Peter Knight (pictured) leads the band Way Out West at Braybrook Hub. In Moore Sweet Dreams, artists The Indirect Object will transform a home to explore the link between street noise and life in Footscray. Other events include a 1930s Berlin Kabarett take on A Scandal in the Weimar by local theatre company Wit Incorporated and a series of guerrilla opera cruises by BK Opera along the Maribyrnong River. Werribee commuter crush ‘critical’ By Alesha Capone Melbourne’s train operator has predicted the Werribee train line will be “at capacity” by 2019. The warning was contained in Metro’s 2016 Strategic Operational Plan, which was leaked to Fairfax Media earlier this month. The document stated that the Werribee line would be “at capacity by 2019 once the additional paths provided by the Regional Rail Link Project have been used”. The Regional Rail Link (RRL), which runs

between the Southern Cross and Werribee train stations, opened two years ago. It separated regional trains from metropolitan trains, enabling room for extra services – known as “train paths” – to run each hour on existing railway lines, including Werribee. Public Transport Users Association spokesman Daniel Bowen said it was “critical” that Metro and the state government reformed timetables to make better use of the available fleet and track capacity. Mr Bowen said that if the Werribee line did reach capacity by 2019, the daily commute

could become uncomfortable for travellers. “It can be very unpleasant travelling in packed trains – if you can squeeze aboard, you’re crushed in with your fellow passengers, sometimes barely able to move during the journey,” he said. “In some cases there’s simply no room to board, and you’re left waiting on

the platform for another train, which may or may not arrive in time to get you to work on time.” Werribee MP Tim Pallas said that in August this year the state government would be adding 10 peak services and 20 new services to the Werribee line between 4pm and 5pm each week. He said the Melbourne Metro Tunnel project would also provide more space to run more trains, in and out of Melbourne’s CBD and create a “24 per cent more peak capacity on the Werribee line”.

Stage set for storytelling Footscray West actor Ross Daniels will take audience members back in time when he stars in a show at the Werribee Mansion this month. Daniels has joined the cast of What Was That, a theatrical production set at the heritage mansion, written by Werribee actor and businesswoman Alaine Beek. Staged by Essence Productions, the performance is set in the 19th century and tells the story of the Chirnside family, who built the mansion. Daniels plays the role of Mr Duncan, the head butler. “Alaine, the producer, was looking for a new actor to join the team and play the character of a bossy butler with a drinking problem,” Daniels said. “Apparently my name kept coming up – I won’t take that personally.” Daniels said there was “plenty of twists and turns” in What Was That. “It has a good blend

of entertainment elements,” he said. “It’s funny, there’s a nice amount of history tied into the story and it’s quite scary in parts too – watch out behind you!” Daniels, who is also a comedian, has appeared in several television shows, including City Homicide, Stingers, Blue Heelers, Something in the Air, Janus and Round the Twist. What was That is staged once a week at 8pm on either Friday or Saturday nights, at Werribee Mansion. The show is recommended for children aged 11+ due to some scary elements. On the run from poverty By Goya Dmytryshchak Three members of a Williamstown family have headed to Kenya to run a marathon raising funds for children living in poverty. Cain Speakman, his father Neil and sister Abby, left Australia on Friday for the town of Turbo where Cain has helped to establish a children’s village. Each of them aims to raise at least $10,000 for the One Heart Foundation, established by Williamstown resident Dean Landy. Cain, who is on the foundation board, said the Run from Poverty marathon event aimed to raise funds to build a high school in what has been dubbed One Heart Village. “The money that we raised goes 100 per cent towards the village that we’ve established in Kenya,” he said. “The village that we’ve established houses 75 children who were all orphaned or abandoned. “There’s three houses [with] 25 kids in each, and we employ house parents so the kids have a mum and a dad – they’re loved – and they’ve got brothers and sisters effectively. “Within our village, we’ve also built a primary school. “We also bring kids in from the local community.” Mr Speakman said the long-term aim was for the village to become self-sustainable and then a second village would be built along the same model. “Earlier this year, we bought another block of land in a town called Soy where we’re looking to start our second village. “Some of these kids are living on the streets, under trees, looking after siblings who are two, three years old.” For more information visit www.oneheart. foundation.

Prickly pick for thieves Green-fingered thieves have been caught on camera stealing an entire collection of cactus and succulent pot plants from outside an Altona Meadows home. Security footage showed two men entering a Fitzpatrick Drive townhouse complex, backing onto Skeleton Creek, just after 1am on Thursday. Undeterred by CCTV or a sensor light, they pick up as many cacti and succulent plants as they can carry, before returning for more. The theft has left victim Jessica Meddings devastated. “It’s just that fear that someone’s watching me because they clearly knew what they were coming to take,” she said. “It’s just a complete sense of violation. “It was absolutely heartbreaking when I saw that they were all gone, and that someone can just come in and steal your property like that – I was just baffled.” She believes the stolen plants, valued about $1500, may reappear at a market. I moved to Hobsons Bay after graduating from high school. Actually, my great-grandfather lived in Williamstown so it’s kind of been a full circle. I moved down from Queensland. My parents loved the area and so did I. So, I’ve been living here ever since late 2015, early 2016. What do you like about Williamstown?

I live really close to the beach so that’s a beautiful part. I love seeing the beauty of Williamstown, I love seeing all the nature surrounding me. That’s probably my favourite part, just walking across the jetty and seeing the beautiful city skyline. What would you change? I think Williamstown is pretty darn good. I think maybe one of the things I’d change inside Williamstown is making those opportunities for youth a little bit more accessible. But in terms of how Williamstown is, I’m pretty happy with the place. I think it’s a beautiful place to live. Do you have a favourite cafe or place to eat?

What are you passionate about? I think what I’m most passionate about right now is making the youth voice heard and that’s what I try to do in everything I do. At the moment, I’m working in government so I’m the youngest person by a decade. I think young

people have a lot to give and a lot to say and I really want to make sure that that is truly heard and respected. I think we have a lot to contribute and I’m really excited to hear from other young people. Every day I’m just so driven to create positive change and to help Australia for the better. That’s what I will always strive to do. What’s something people would be surprised to know about you?

When I was eight years old I started learning guitar and I found out my school needed some recording equipment so I decided to busk and raise the money for it. I ended up busking up until the age of 12 and I raised thousands of dollars for the Red Cross and things like that. FB: What is your favourite TV food show and who is your favourite TV food person? MB: Honestly, I’m not a fan of cooking shows as I can’t stand all the drama. Also, being vegetarian and having food intolerances, I can’t actually eat and enjoy what’s on screen. I used to like Ainsley Harriott and the Two Fat Ladies, but more so for their personalities and banter.

I must admit, I’ve never been a huge fan of putting vegetables into cakes. I couldn’t quite wrap my head around the idea of having a chocolate cake with beetroot or sweet potato in it. But that all changed when I discovered this lemon and zucchini cake. I had a bucketful of lemons from my mum’s tree that I was keen to use and the little flecks of green through this cake looked really appealing. The addition of zucchini gives this cake a wonderful, moist texture and it’s very easy to throw together. A friend dropped around just after I’d made it, and she gave it a double thumbs up! Thanks to the Mom On Timeout website for this recipe.

LEMON AND ZUCCHINI CAKE 1¼ cups caster sugar 6 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil 2 eggs One third of a cup of milk 2 tbs lemon juice 1 tsp vanilla essence 2 cups plain flour 1¼ tsp baking powder ½ tsp salt 1½ cups grated zucchini 2 tbs lemon zest Preheat oven to 180C. Combine flour, baking powder and salt in a medium bowl and stir together. In another bowl, whisk together the sugar and olive oil. Whisk in the milk, then add the lemon juice and vanilla and stir to combine. Add flour mixture and stir until just combined. Fold through the zucchini and lemon zest, pour into a lined loaf pan and bake for 45 to 55 minutes or until a toothpick comes out with moist crumbs. For the glaze, mix together 1 cup of icing sugar with about 2 tablespoons of lemon juice and drizzle over the top.

CONSIDER THE SAUCE Kenny Weir finds a jewel in an unlikely place Riviera, located in the enormous restaurant room at Edgewater’s Lakehouse, is delivering traditional Lebanese food with a full menu set-up. Word is already out across Melbourne’s Lebanese community, if the hijabs and hookahs witnessed by CTS on an exploratory visit are any gauge. But surely westie food fans in general will also come to embrace the place, so good is the food. A tableful of Team CTS finds the Sunday night welcome and service are fine. For simplicity’s sake, we quickly come to a collective decision to go with banquet option No.1 at a cost of $35 a head for the six adults in our group. It turns out to be a most memorable Lebanese feast. It is all good, very good or outstanding. Here’s what we had: Crisp, moreish pita chips. Also wonderfully crisp – the commercial but delightful pickled cucumbers and turshi. Excellent dips – hummus, labneh, baba ghannouj. Fattoush and glorious chicken wings – perhaps the hit of the night. Chips – perfectly acceptable, but a little shy of the perfection I expect in such a setting. Makanek – Lebanese-style lamb sausages. Others enjoy these more than I – for me they’re a little too sweet and rich. Kibbaybat – deep-fried pastries with a

Excellent meat on sticks – shish tawouk and shish kafta as advertised on the menu, and shish kebab as a surprise. A big serve of a simple dish of lamb chops on rice is an unannounced addition to our banquet line-up. With its fragrant rice studded with currants, peas, cashews and more serving as a bed for beautifully cooked meat, this reminds me very much of the sort of Somalian meat ‘n’ rice dishes. Finally, our fabulous meal winds down with super slices of chilled watermelon. That Riviera is serving top-notch Lebanese food – at Edgewater’s Lakehouse, of all places – fills me with profound happiness. There is nothing cutting-edge, hipster or fusionesque about the fare here – and nor would I want there to be. We all vow to return – and soonish.

Maribyrnong Swifts have moved to within a point of top spot in the Football Federation Victoria women’s state league 2. The Swifts edged out La Trobe University 1-0 in a tightly contested game at Johnson Reserve on Sunday. Matilda Myers scored the game’s only goal for the Swifts after nine minutes. The Swifts are equal on points with second-placed Melbourne University and just one point behind leaders South Melbourne. While it was a good weekend for the Swifts, it was one that Yarraville Glory and Maidstone United would rather forget. The Glory was toppled 4-2 away to Fitzroy City, while Maidstone suffered a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Templestowe United. In men’s state league 1, runaway ladder leader Altona Magic suffered a rare loss, going down 3-2 to Preston Lions at BT Connor Reserve. Four goals were evenly shared in the first half with Jon McShane and Adamson Ajayi hitting the target for the Magic, but it was the Lions who roared in the second half.

Altona East Phoenix sunk back to the bottom of the ladder after a 1-0 loss to Essendon Royals at Ormond Park, while late goals to Kazuki Okada and Keith Burch ensured a 2-1 home win for Yarraville Glory over Keilor Park. Altona City saw its two-point lead at the top of the men’s state league 2 evaporated after a 1-1 draw with Sporting Whittlesea at RGC Cook Reserve. City is still on top of the ladder on goal difference from Hoppers Crossing. Williamstown had to settle for a 1-1 draw with Epping City at Duffy Street Reserve, leaving them five points off top spot in men’s state league 3. Altona North could not spoil the 1500th game celebrations of the Western Eagles in men’s state league 4, losing 2-1 at the Polish Sports and Recreation Complex. anyone in power at any junior sports competition in the west is thinking of capping scores and not recording personal achievements, let me be clear – this writer is totally against it. Kids know the scores, even when they are having a muck around at Auskick, let alone in a proper game. What are we protecting them from? Participation is very important, but sport is about winning and losing. You learn a lot from both in sport and life in general. I see too many kids who love winning but go to pieces when they get beaten. That is a product of bad coaching and bad parenting. Shielding kids from the pain of losing is a bad thing and a false world. If you keep sport in its true perspective for kids, then losing a football, soccer or netball game is not the end of the world. Maybe parents need to re-assess their expectations and just let the kids play.

women’s footy is the fastest growing part of the game, it is good to see that participation of blokes above the age of 35 is healthy as well. Super Rules, lovingly known to many as Super Fools, gives the old blokes a chance to have a kick with their mates knowing that their opponent is probably feeling as creaky and ancient as they are. Werribee Masters play at Wyndhamvale Oval and have a reputation as a good club on and off the ground. The Vikings have gained a second wind in their quest for a Western Region Football League division 1 finals berth after an eye-catching display in a 55-point win on the road at Soldiers Reserve on Saturday. “I thought it was probably our best performance for the year, considering we had no bench in the last quarter and only one guy up and going after half-time,” Vikings coach Saade Ghazi said. “The boys were very tough, had a great attitude and were able to grind it out to get on top of Werribee.” Altona played with the urgency and enthusiasm required in a do-or-die situation. The Vikings season could have been done and dusted if they came away empty-handed. Ghazi is not buying into the finals talk just yet. “It’s irrelevant who we play the next five weeks, it’s just about making sure that we bring that style and intensity to the way we want to play,” he said. Meanwhile, Mitchell McLean provided the magic with six goals in Spotswood’s 69-point win over Albion at McLean Reserve. sad to report of the passing last week of two life members of the Western Bulldogs. Robbie Leitch, trainer during the ’80s and ’90s, and David McTaggart, one of the founders of the East West Coterie Club, both succumbed to their battles with illness. Robbie was old school and part of a memorable crew that included Ben Bradley, Bruce Wilkinson and Jack McGovern (all deceased) who were the very fabric of the club at that time. David and his late wife, Maree, were passionate Bulldog supporters who lived in the east and welcomed players and officials into their house over the years when the East West Club held functions in that part of town. Young gun on target Thomas Armstrong is on a fast track to success in the sport of shooting. The 17-year-old’s first competition was less than three years ago, but he has already represented Victoria at the national championships and Australia on the international stage and is one of Werribee Victorian Clay Target Shooting Club’s most promising youngsters. “I seem to have progressed in the sport pretty quickly,” Armstrong said. “I owe that initially to my parents – they’ve taken me to a lot of competitions, which I think has improved my scores.” Armstrong was in Wagga Wagga last week as part of a development program. Among the most promising shooters in the land, the Plumpton resident received instructions from Suzie Balogh, a gold medal-winning Australian Olympian, and a number of other high-ranking shooters. “We’re learning all about techniques that might help us and the mental side of it as well,” he said. “The mental side is more than half of it. You make too many mistakes when you get nervous, so it’s good to learn that side of it, too.” Armstrong has already proven to have

a steady hand and sharp eye in major competitions. Selected in the Australian junior down the line team after impressing at the national championships for Victoria, he won a team gold with two other shooters at the World DTL Championships in Ireland last year. This year, Armstrong has done well for Victoria at the Australian National Trap Championships, which the Big V won with a perfect score of 250 out of 250. Armstrong placed third at the Junior National Champion of Champions after one measly point cost him. There were no such worries at the National Single Barrel event as he became the youngest ever to win the title. In the National Points Score competition, Armstrong finished with a combined score of 298/300. It was the highest junior score and second highest overall. Armstrong’s greatest honour so far is being named captain of the Australian junior team for the World DTL Championships, which will take place in Wagga Wagga next year. In the meantime, Armstrong will focus on his second Australian team call-up when he competes at the World Universal Trench World Championships in France next month.

The multi-sport star from Maribyrnong College will take to the floor for the Australian Gems at the FIBA under-19 Women’s Basketball World Cup, starting Saturday. Conti travelled with the Gems to a pre-tournament event in France before flying to Udine, Italy, for the world cup. “It’s always a great honour to be selected to represent your country and wear the green and gold,” Conti said. “It’s something that I’ve been striving for since the under-17 campaign. “Now I’ve made it to that stage, I’ve got to perform well at worlds and just own [my] spot really.” Conti was a key part of Australia’s title-winning run at the under-17 world championships. While Conti has experienced basketball on the world stage, she envisages the under-19 level to be a considerable step up. “This is one step higher because the age group has gone up a couple of years,” she said. “It is going to be quite challenging, but I am prepared for it because I know what’s ahead of us and what the focus is. “There are going to be some really good athletes, so I’m looking forward to seeing where I stand.” Conti will know more about her specific role within the team after the lead-up matches are completed. The Maidstone resident has vowed to be ready when called upon, be it as a starter or an impact player off the bench. “I’m not too concerned about starting as such, but I hope to be one of the main point guards,” she said. “I’ve just got to be ready.” Conti has played with two quality organisations in the Melbourne Tigers and Melbourne Boomers. The coaches at the Tigers had a massive impact on her early years in

basketball before she crossed to the Boomers as a development player.
